Welcome to Gothenburg in Sweden, a city with a sporting past to be

:00:13.:00:18.

proud of. In 1950 it was host for the Football World Cup and 40 euros

:00:19.:00:28.
:00:29.:00:29.

in 1992. John Curry and Robin Cousins have won gold medals here.

:00:29.:00:34.

The story continues this weekend, the 32nd European Athletics Indoor

:00:34.:00:37.

Championships. An event which has always been a happy hunting ground

:00:38.:00:47.
:00:48.:01:14.

Gothenburg looking resplendent in the sunshine. We are ready for the

:01:14.:01:24.
:01:24.:01:26.

next chapter in the European Athletics Indoor Championships. A

:01:26.:01:34.

reputation for hosting major European events. The Scandinavian

:01:34.:01:43.

arena is where we off. -- Scandinavium Arena. This hosted the

:01:43.:01:50.

eurovision song contest back in 1985.

:01:50.:02:00.
:02:00.:02:33.

This is what is coming up this Some of the highlights of this

:02:33.:02:43.
:02:43.:02:57.

Good morning to Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson alongside me. First

:02:57.:03:02.

of all, a busy morning, the first championships since the Olympic

:03:02.:03:12.

Games, and a new man in charge, Peter Eriksson takes up the baton.

:03:12.:03:17.

Here you are, head coach, in your home country of Sweden, your first

:03:17.:03:23.

major championships in this role. It is great. I haven't been home

:03:23.:03:29.

for many years, it is great to be the first championships, this is

:03:29.:03:34.

what you are waiting for. The bigger event. We have a great team

:03:34.:03:39.

to do well. When you come back to Sweden, to

:03:39.:03:42.

memories of that time come flooding back?

:03:42.:03:48.

Not really. It is more, when I come home, this is always home to me, is

:03:49.:03:52.

that you see the city, you recognise anything, anything looks

:03:52.:03:57.

the same but nothing is really the same. I have changed, everything

:03:57.:04:03.

else has changed, in the 27 years I have gone. It is tough, you feel

:04:03.:04:09.

like a stranger in your own town. I must bring you to the present day

:04:09.:04:13.

and this weekend in Gothenburg. You talk about the team, having high

:04:13.:04:19.

hopes. You have gone for a team which has people in there with top

:04:19.:04:26.

six potential across the board. That is what UK sport and lottery

:04:26.:04:30.

funding is investing in, in performance, when it comes to major

:04:30.:04:38.

events. As you can see, we have a very young team. And, it is a good

:04:38.:04:45.

team. A good coaching and support staff, I am really positive. Will

:04:45.:04:51.

you set medal targets corrupt? All will it be something you will be

:04:51.:04:56.

looking at and, in terms of the overall picture? This is a new

:04:56.:05:05.

coaching staff. Are we doing better than before? Did everybody perform

:05:05.:05:15.
:05:15.:05:16.

at their best? This is important to start the year. Just do better.

:05:16.:05:20.

Better than Paris two years ago, eight medals? To do better than

:05:20.:05:28.

that. In this air of optimism, after the Olympics? We have a young

:05:28.:05:32.

team, we have to be optimistic, it is a lot of pressure on the team

:05:32.:05:37.

with so many youngsters. I do not see that is a stumbling stone for

:05:37.:05:47.
:05:47.:05:47.

doing well. You can hope for medals. But, I just want the best from them.

:05:47.:05:52.

That is how we are going to evaluate it on. You have had a

:05:52.:05:56.

fantastic success with the Great Britain Paralympics team, London

:05:56.:06:03.

2012. A quote here, he is our friend as well as our coach, but he

:06:03.:06:08.

knows when to be scary as well, at a winning formula! I do not know

:06:08.:06:16.

what to say about that! Scary. I can tough -- be tough when I need

:06:16.:06:22.

to be tough. I have to be. Otherwise... You would be

:06:22.:06:31.

steamrollered all of the time. Really nice for Peter Eriksson

:06:31.:06:36.

coming back to his home country for his first championships as UK head

:06:36.:06:41.

coach. What a different personality he is

:06:41.:06:47.

from Charles. A isn't he just. Mild mannered in nature, very warm,

:06:47.:06:53.

very generous, on the occasions I have spoken to him. He has to

:06:53.:06:59.

establish himself, a new change of management, new team. He has to

:06:59.:07:04.

stamp his authority for the success of the team.

:07:04.:07:09.

It will certainly be a different approach for the athlete to get

:07:09.:07:14.

used to. Charles was uncompromising, not afraid of calling a spade a

:07:14.:07:19.

spade or even worse. Peter, a different approach.

:07:19.:07:25.

He has a more lovely approach which some of the athletes will find

:07:25.:07:32.

strange. He is breaking down the barriers of a them and us scenario.

:07:32.:07:36.

He wants a genuine feeling of being a team to help athletes perform to

:07:36.:07:40.

the best of their ability. So Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe

:07:40.:07:43.

are in the commentary box, good morning.

:07:43.:07:47.

We are loving it up here. A good vantage point.

:07:47.:07:52.

We were talking about that change in culture. It will be very

:07:52.:07:57.

different with Peter. A very different character.

:07:57.:08:02.

Obviously, it's not just the athletes. We talk about the

:08:02.:08:07.

athletes a lot. Peter has to work with the coaches, there has been a

:08:07.:08:12.

lot of turmoil, people put into new positions, people have lost

:08:12.:08:17.

positions. So, Peter has a job to keep everybody feeling part of the

:08:17.:08:23.

team still, feeling as if they are contributing. Often, where

:08:23.:08:31.

communication stops. You have to include the coaches as well.

:08:31.:08:38.

It is the way you motivate athletes as well. Charles would show people

:08:38.:08:46.

what they needed to do, being forthright. Peter it is going for

:08:46.:08:50.

that father figure. That approach, where the athlete can prove

:08:50.:08:54.

themselves. The interesting thing is, no murder

:08:54.:08:58.

of targets. He talks about getting the best from the athletes which

:08:58.:09:04.

already seems to be a contrast to Charles. He set the number of

:09:04.:09:08.

medals. I think the problem with that, as

:09:08.:09:14.

we all know, sports are judged by their output. They receive lottery

:09:14.:09:18.

funding to win medals. You cannot keep saying, we will do as well as

:09:18.:09:24.

we can. They will at some point tell UK Sport what they are aiming

:09:24.:09:29.

for. Not just here, but in World Championships and Olympic Games.

:09:29.:09:35.

The individual athletes will know what their targets are. We hope the

:09:35.:09:40.

team wins lots of medals. But it is really down to the individual. What

:09:40.:09:44.

they have to engender is British athletes can win medals at the

:09:44.:09:49.

Olympic Games, World Championships, particularly here. It is a small

:09:49.:09:53.

team. They have said from the outset, it is about getting into

:09:53.:09:57.

the top six and winning medals. This British team going forward

:09:58.:10:01.

from the Olympics has to be one which is led from the top who is

:10:01.:10:05.

saying, we expect you to do well and when medals.

:10:05.:10:10.

Peter Eriksson talked about the team, average age of 22 years old.

:10:10.:10:20.
:10:20.:10:23.

Let us have a look at it and see It is a good, strong team, even

:10:23.:10:28.

though it is small, there is a lot of potential. Looking at the 400m,

:10:28.:10:35.

we could easily get two medals. 800 metres as well. The relay, a gold

:10:35.:10:41.

medal. Robbie Grabarz can go higher, he could possibly win it. It is a

:10:41.:10:46.

good, solid team. If you want medals, this is the type of team

:10:46.:10:51.

you have to pick, I think. Paula Radcliffe, there is a big gap

:10:51.:10:57.

between the 800 metres and 4x400 metres worthy 1,500m might have

:10:57.:11:01.

been. You have been vociferous about who should or should not have

:11:01.:11:05.

been selected. Coming into these championships, it

:11:05.:11:10.

is very much a stepping-stone to the World Championships. It is all

:11:10.:11:15.

very well to pick people horrid top eight possibility. There are young

:11:15.:11:21.

athlete who could have come here and used it as a stepping stone. In

:11:21.:11:25.

middle distance, they could have been in there. That expense could

:11:25.:11:29.

have been invaluable. A I would like to chip in a little

:11:29.:11:34.

bit. It is about winning medals here. Any programme is about

:11:34.:11:42.

development going forward. A medallist going forward. You have

:11:42.:11:47.

to learned this game, come to major jab bishops in the senior ranks.

:11:47.:11:54.

Not everyone can come here and win medals. You can wind the back --

:11:54.:12:04.
:12:04.:12:05.

the clock back to 1994, when we saw youngsters winning medals.

:12:05.:12:14.

Event Andrew Osagie, two years ago, was lucky to be selected. Taking a

:12:14.:12:20.

chance on these kinds of people. Denise Lewis, you are nodding

:12:20.:12:26.

vigorously. What do you make about this new talent?

:12:26.:12:33.

As you say, this is a stepping stone for a lot of the athletes.

:12:33.:12:38.

You have to use it. It would be nice to know that British Athletics

:12:38.:12:42.

had set their stall out from the beginning of the year to say, we

:12:42.:12:47.

need to rebuild after 2012, the pressure was on us as a team, we

:12:47.:12:53.

have delivered really well. Now, it is about the next generation, the

:12:53.:12:58.

rising stars, the build up to Rio, and it starts with competitions

:12:59.:13:05.

like this. We would like to see athletes. More athletes here, that

:13:05.:13:09.

was my first impression. If let us take a look at the

:13:09.:13:14.

women's team now. Denise Lewis, your reaction to these elections?

:13:14.:13:20.

For again, a very strong women's team, I think. Looking at the

:13:20.:13:27.

women's 400m, maybe two Murdoch chances. Holly Bleasdale and Shara

:13:27.:13:31.

Proctor, they really should be fighting for those hurdles.

:13:31.:13:36.

Generally, a very solid team. Nice to see Jenny Meadows taking the

:13:36.:13:42.

opportunity to race. The 4x400m relay, if we don't get a medal, I

:13:43.:13:52.

will be very surprised. That is a very strong team,

:13:52.:13:55.

especially with Perri Shakes- Drayton of running so strongly, and

:13:55.:13:58.

Christine Ohuruogu. That is a formidable quartet.

:13:58.:14:03.

We know the Russians will be strong but outing should be aiming for his

:14:03.:14:07.

gold medal. I am keen to take a look at how

:14:07.:14:12.

Britain has done in the past decade in these championships, to give a

:14:12.:14:21.

context for the indoor chances for the team. Immediately post Olympic

:14:21.:14:31.

Games. Four medals, 2009. Should we bring

:14:31.:14:39.

our expectations of lower? This team is hungry. They have the

:14:39.:14:42.

ability of winning medals, they will deliver what we expect of them.

:14:42.:14:47.

Just because they are not vocalising how many medals they are

:14:47.:14:52.

expecting, they will be disappointed if the team do not

:14:52.:15:02.
:15:02.:15:11.

come home with seven medals. It is team has been very different.

:15:11.:15:15.

They've been encouraged to expect more from themselves in terms of

:15:15.:15:19.

performance. Definitely on the European stage. I'd expect them to

:15:19.:15:23.

do really well. Peter Eriksson talked about doing at least as well

:15:23.:15:31.

as Paris. What we've asked is the expert pundit to give their

:15:31.:15:41.
:15:41.:15:43.

predictions. We will see what they was feeling optimistic! I think we

:15:43.:15:50.

should be looking for medals from Holly, Perri Shakes-Drayton, the

:15:50.:15:58.

two 4 x4 relays. Let's think Helen Clitheroe a couple of years ago,

:15:58.:16:02.

how she shocked everyone in that 3000m. There's got to be another

:16:02.:16:12.
:16:12.:16:18.

Are you regretting that now? No, I think honestly I've gone a little

:16:18.:16:22.

bit with what I'd like to see happen as well. I've gone for Jenny

:16:22.:16:27.

in the 800m because I'd love to see her return and winning medal, after

:16:27.:16:32.

the year she went through last year. In the men's 800m, I definitely

:16:32.:16:38.

think a medal is possible there. I think the women's 400m, too, and

:16:38.:16:45.

then gold shots in both relays. They've been doing this TV thing

:16:45.:16:53.

for a long time, Steve Cram and CJ, they've gone conservative. Because

:16:54.:16:57.

we've been doing this for a long time, we are not stupid enough to

:16:57.:17:02.

stick our necks out and be shown up at the end of the weekend. That's

:17:02.:17:05.

pretty much what it is. Denise has gone out there really positive,

:17:05.:17:12.

Paul is new to the game. We are wise old men. Predictions, it we

:17:12.:17:17.

were that clever we'd all be down the bookies, I'd be predicting

:17:17.:17:20.

sporting outcomes for the whole of this weekend and elsewhere as well.

:17:20.:17:25.

It's a bit of fun. It's a bit of a stab at what we hope might happen.

:17:26.:17:32.

What we made the expect to happen. It does reflect. It will be a good

:17:32.:17:34.

Championships for Great Britain. Not because we have a brilliant

:17:34.:17:38.

team, it's a good team, but this is post-Olympic year. There are a lot

:17:38.:17:44.

of other nations like Great Britain who haven't sent their big stars.

:17:44.:17:48.

There will be some new names coming through, that will be great to see

:17:48.:17:53.

them develop over the next few years. We are going to be sitting

:17:54.:17:57.

quite well here. You get measured on the table by gold medals. It

:17:57.:18:00.

Denise is right, we'll probably be top of the table. Two or three gold

:18:00.:18:03.

medals would be a good result. will keep track of those

:18:03.:18:07.

predictions during the course of the weekend and see who was right

:18:07.:18:15.

We can hear from Jenny Meadows now. It's great to have her back on the

:18:15.:18:21.

team after an injury ravaged 2012. It's great to see you because when

:18:21.:18:27.

we spoke in Birmingham, you ran well, you said you had to talk to

:18:28.:18:31.

your coat, but whether you would compete - what was the discussion

:18:31.:18:36.

after? After Wright crossed the line I felt really tired. I thought,

:18:36.:18:40.

I don't want to do that any time soon. Then I thought, you know,

:18:40.:18:43.

it's probably exactly what I do need to do. It's completely

:18:43.:18:48.

different training and racing, you have to be race-fit. We decided we

:18:48.:18:52.

didn't want to leave the three months until the start of the

:18:52.:18:55.

outdoor season. It would will reveal another couple of weeks

:18:55.:18:58.

until the championships. It shows the kind of esteem you are held

:18:58.:19:02.

within in UK Athletics that you've been made the captain as well. If

:19:02.:19:07.

the fantastic honour. When Peter asked me, I accepted straightaway.

:19:07.:19:11.

Two weeks ago I never believed I was in this championship and as a

:19:11.:19:16.

captain, so what really positive. How about going in there as

:19:16.:19:20.

defending champion? Yes. I've never gone into a Championships as

:19:20.:19:24.

defending champion before. I'm not sure realistically what my chances

:19:25.:19:30.

are. But certainly I take it very seriously. I am the defending

:19:30.:19:36.

champion. I definitely won't let that title slip easily. Boy you,

:19:36.:19:41.

this championship, how would you put into perspective what success

:19:41.:19:45.

would be for you? Having had that long road back from injury to get

:19:45.:19:50.

to this point. The cut will say the reason for you doing it is to

:19:50.:19:54.

practise your mental skills, really go through the whole scenario. A

:19:54.:19:58.

lot of people see as giving the race on television but it's all the

:19:58.:20:03.

build-up. You get a lot of nerves beforehand. The warm-up area can be

:20:03.:20:06.

quite daunting sometimes. Just to go through the whole routine is

:20:06.:20:14.

really important for me. I am a competitor. I will be trying my

:20:14.:20:21.

best, trying to defend my title. A lot of people wouldn't at -- expect

:20:21.:20:25.

it, I'm only ranked 7th or eighth going into the race, but I'd be

:20:25.:20:30.

really disappointed if I wasn't on the podium. Certainly a turnaround

:20:30.:20:37.

for Jenny Meadows. When she turned out at Birmingham, almost get a run

:20:37.:20:41.

in her legs, she ran better than anticipated, and here she is

:20:41.:20:45.

talking about the podium. I don't think Jenny would put herself on

:20:45.:20:48.

the line if she didn't really believe in her heart that a podium

:20:48.:20:52.

finish is possible. She ran well, she ran confidently, the way we are

:20:52.:20:57.

used to seeing her run. I do think, looking at the list, if she can get

:20:57.:21:01.

herself close to that two minute mark, it's not going to be easy,

:21:01.:21:05.

Benji is in with a good shot. great to have her back. A horrible

:21:05.:21:11.

year for her last year. She'd been building up, she was always in the

:21:11.:21:17.

mix for medals. Then a horrible time with her Achille -- her

:21:17.:21:20.

Achilles problem. It's an absolute nightmare. Every athlete hates

:21:20.:21:24.

getting injured. But when you lose a whole season and you dream of

:21:24.:21:28.

being an Olympian on your home turf, absolutely shattering. It was

:21:28.:21:32.

lovely to see her return and return in such a positive way. She wasn't

:21:32.:21:36.

frightened, she went up there and has competed well. I'm looking

:21:36.:21:39.

forward to her going through all of these grounds and in each race we

:21:39.:21:43.

will see an improvement from Jenny Meadows. I'm pretty sure she won't

:21:43.:21:47.

be far off that podium. She is the defending Chaplin, we can look back

:21:47.:21:50.

defending Chaplin, we can look back to that race in 2011. Defending

:21:50.:21:55.

champion, although she finished in second place. The Russian who beat

:21:55.:21:58.

her was banned for a doping violation, as was the Russian who

:21:58.:22:03.

finished in third place. So Marion Okoro had been upgraded to a bronze

:22:03.:22:10.

medal. Interestingly enough, in a Radio 5 Live interview, Peter

:22:10.:22:16.

Eriksson did talk about the issue with Russians and drug-taking. 33

:22:16.:22:25.

athletes at the moment currently A lot of people do speculate, they

:22:25.:22:29.

do point the finger to the Russians. But it's very surprising that Peter

:22:29.:22:32.

Eriksson would be so bold to make that statement ahead of these

:22:32.:22:36.

championships. He will really put the Russians under the Spotlight

:22:36.:22:41.

here. If you look at the 800m, of the European rankings this year

:22:41.:22:46.

we've got 10 Russians filling those spots, yet they only sent one of

:22:46.:22:52.

their girls here. It's interesting. Let's go to the commentary box and

:22:52.:22:57.

speak to Paul and Steve on this. Oh, they are not here. I'll come to you,

:22:57.:23:01.

Colin. The Russians do have to get their act together. What is

:23:01.:23:07.

surprising for me, you'd think you would learn by a mistake. When you

:23:07.:23:08.

think one, two, three members of your team are getting caught,

:23:09.:23:13.

perhaps you'd think, you know what, perhaps I'd better Steer clear of

:23:13.:23:16.

this nonsense now because we are tested and people are getting

:23:16.:23:20.

caught. That surprises me. They haven't really thought about it.

:23:20.:23:24.

Let's be honest, we hope it doesn't become an epidemic in Russia now,

:23:24.:23:30.

where drug-taking becomes the norm to get on a team. Let's hope

:23:30.:23:33.

they've learnt their lesson now and can get out there and compete as

:23:33.:23:39.

clean athletes. Shara Proctor is going in the women's long jump

:23:39.:23:43.

qualification. Before we catch up with her, let's go back to 1984. We

:23:43.:23:53.
:23:53.:23:59.

would Kieran Goss -- Gothenburg, at six metres 70. That's another

:23:59.:24:09.
:24:09.:24:13.

one that surely must challenge the and girl at six metres 55. She

:24:13.:24:23.
:24:23.:24:25.

falls back a little bit at the end qualified for the final with a 6.70.

:24:25.:24:30.

Shara Proctor getting ready for her attempt to get into the final.

:24:30.:24:39.

Initially, I didn't have the Europeans in my plans. I just

:24:39.:24:43.

wanted to go out there and get a couple of competitions, get the

:24:43.:24:49.

rhythm down and get back to training for Moscow, because that's

:24:49.:24:56.

the big plan. I just so happened... It's another opportunity for me to

:24:56.:25:02.

get my name in the books and do a good job. I saw you perform so

:25:02.:25:05.

wonderfully well in Berlin, that place is obviously special in your

:25:05.:25:10.

heart now because you set a British record there. What does that kind

:25:10.:25:19.

of meeting and jumped to for your confidence? In practice, I see that

:25:19.:25:24.

I can go far. But doing it in competition is just special. I just

:25:24.:25:28.

love competing in the Birmingham arena. It's amazing. The crowd is

:25:28.:25:34.

amazing. They give me that extra energy to go further. It wasn't the

:25:34.:25:39.

British record but it was good enough to qualify for the Europeans.

:25:39.:25:43.

Now you are here in Gothenburg, do you have a feeling there's nothing

:25:43.:25:47.

to lose, this is a bonus, something you cannot plant, whatever comes

:25:47.:25:55.

comes? It is a bonus. Hopefully I will get a gold medal. I will come

:25:55.:26:03.

Before she can think about a medal, she has to follow -- qualified for

:26:03.:26:07.

the final. Paul Dickinson can bring us up to date with the early stages

:26:07.:26:17.
:26:17.:26:21.

that's allowed in the qualifying competition. 6.65 is what is

:26:21.:26:25.

required to make it automatically through to the final. Not a bad

:26:25.:26:30.

take-off. The yellow line that superimposed is the automatic

:26:30.:26:34.

qualifying. It looks a little bit short of that. Having said that, I

:26:34.:26:41.

can't imagine eight women jumping 6.65 for further, judging from the

:26:41.:26:47.

entry list. Shara Proctor won a bronze medal in the world indoor

:26:47.:26:52.

championships last year. She smashed the British record.

:26:52.:26:59.

Subsequently finished 9th in the Olympic final. 6.61, the longest

:26:59.:27:09.
:27:09.:27:22.

jump so far. Looking in good shape Looks about the same sort of

:27:22.:27:28.

distance that Shara Proctor achieved a few moments ago. Nobody

:27:28.:27:32.

has achieved the automatic qualifying distance so far. We had

:27:32.:27:37.

a long succession of false. Shara Proctor remains the longest jumper

:27:37.:27:47.
:27:47.:28:02.

Europe this season indoors. Made massive improvements to win a world

:28:02.:28:06.

championship silver medal a few years ago. She, too, falls shy of

:28:06.:28:16.
:28:16.:28:24.

She gets the white flag, that's place at the moment. 6.38. She, too,

:28:24.:28:30.

will have to jump again. The automatic qualifying distance is

:28:30.:28:40.
:28:40.:28:59.

has jumped 7.05 outdoors, 6.80 indoors this season. Still not

:28:59.:29:09.
:29:09.:29:13.

very close to the automatic qualifying distance. By the time

:29:13.:29:15.

the final comes tomorrow, I'm sure a lot of people will be jumping

:29:15.:29:25.
:29:25.:29:31.

take-off again there. It's not bad, it's 6.62. That is the longest

:29:31.:29:41.
:29:41.:29:54.

jumps so far, one centimetre ahead last year. A wild style. 24 years

:29:54.:30:04.
:30:04.:30:10.

I think. Very smooth. But, the jump was off-balance, I am sure there is

:30:10.:30:20.
:30:20.:30:51.

tall Frenchman closest to the camera, the fastest in the field. A

:30:51.:30:57.

little bit inconsistent. World indoor bronze last year. He needs

:30:57.:31:07.
:31:07.:31:20.

win back on, it really good performance. He looked really good

:31:20.:31:25.

there. He had a great run at the French championships with a

:31:25.:31:32.

personal best. That is one of the best he has managed away from those

:31:32.:31:35.

French Indoor Championships. He looked fairly comfortable as well.

:31:35.:31:43.

Lopez got away very well as well. They go through to the next round.

:31:43.:31:47.

Just watch the Frenchman. He is not always the best out of the blocks

:31:47.:31:57.
:31:57.:32:12.

event, the first time since 1996, a long time ago. Maybe Colin Jackson

:32:12.:32:17.

was one of his many holidays spent! Do you see much of this young

:32:17.:32:24.

French man? COLIN JACKSON: I have been looking

:32:24.:32:28.

forward to seeing him perform. He is not very aggressive out of the

:32:28.:32:38.
:32:38.:32:52.

blocks. He is clean and smooth once performance firmly in the morning.

:32:52.:32:55.

No mistakes. A quick question. His first race,

:32:55.:33:05.

he ran 7.98. When you were running, did you get quicker?

:33:05.:33:10.

When I broke the world record, I got faster at the end of the season.

:33:10.:33:19.

Sometimes, you have to get into your group. Now, when it matters,

:33:19.:33:25.

he is delivering. That is going to be pretty close

:33:25.:33:32.

events, the best Europeans this year. Sergei Shubenkov is many

:33:32.:33:35.

people's favourite but the sky is not far away.

:33:36.:33:45.
:33:46.:33:57.

The semi-finals are tonight at Very smooth and rangy. The French

:33:57.:34:03.

have a great addition with men's and women's hurdles. This looks

:34:03.:34:06.

like another one to joined that long list.

:34:06.:34:10.

He was very slowed but not as smooth as fouled Colin Jackson,

:34:10.:34:20.
:34:20.:34:33.

He wasn't as fast as his semi-final. He says, I made hard work of that!

:34:33.:34:39.

The Jackson got away very well. Under pressure but he takes it, a

:34:39.:34:49.
:34:49.:34:57.

blocks brilliantly, storming down in a semi-final qualification but

:34:57.:35:02.

Colin Jackson is the European indoor hurdles champion for a

:35:02.:35:09.

second time. You were very good, weren't you?

:35:09.:35:14.

By I got lucky at a couple of Championships, that's all! It was

:35:14.:35:19.

always very competitive for me, in the sprint and hurdles. The

:35:19.:35:23.

European indoors, it was a good grounding for me to learn under

:35:23.:35:26.

pressure. You would probably say that world

:35:26.:35:30.

record you had, indoors, the 60m hurdles, was much stronger than

:35:30.:35:39.

your outdoor record? I would always agree, 7.30, that was a tough call.

:35:39.:35:45.

I took six hundredths of a second from the world record. It was

:35:45.:35:55.
:35:55.:35:57.

better than my others. It is a different day into line-up against

:35:57.:36:03.

sprinters. If yes, 6.4 denied was my best, when I won in Paris. I was

:36:03.:36:08.

always competitive. Alight ruffling the feathers of the sprinters, I

:36:08.:36:18.
:36:18.:36:20.

knew I was half decent. I loved that. The second heat of the 60m

:36:20.:36:30.
:36:30.:37:10.

Pascal Martinot Lagarde in the first heat, 7.58. The first three,

:37:10.:37:20.
:37:20.:37:44.

and four fastest losers. The final Indoor Championships. This is a

:37:44.:37:54.
:37:54.:37:59.

Not the height of some hurdlers, but most likely the man to catch

:37:59.:38:09.
:38:09.:38:29.

here. 7.59, this season. His running in this heat, this season.

:38:29.:38:35.

The Spaniard there, who once competed for Ecuador. Buhler, a

:38:35.:38:45.
:38:45.:38:45.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:38:45.:39:39.

men's 60m hurdles. The first three cleanly. Going according to form

:39:39.:39:49.
:39:49.:39:50.

pretty much. Baiazs Baji looked as if he came through to take it.

:39:50.:39:56.

COLIN JACKSON: Always very close. Veggie macro, I think, just took it

:39:56.:40:06.
:40:06.:40:07.

past the Russian -- Baji. Once you get into your groove, it makes a

:40:07.:40:17.
:40:17.:40:30.

morning for the hurdlers, they haven't quite got into their group.

:40:30.:40:40.
:40:40.:40:54.

You have to get used to the track losers will also go through,

:40:54.:41:04.
:41:04.:41:18.

in second place, behind Darya Klishina. Just one centimetre

:41:18.:41:22.

separating them. A foul in the first round, that looks a little

:41:22.:41:26.

better and she gets the white flag. She won't have the added pressure

:41:26.:41:36.
:41:36.:41:38.

coming into the third round. That looks much better. Good height.

:41:38.:41:43.

Just short of the qualifying distance. But, ahead of what would

:41:43.:41:47.

constitute 8th place, and it is eight ladies who will make it

:41:47.:41:57.
:41:57.:42:11.

through to the final tomorrow. Centre for in the first round --

:42:11.:42:19.

Denyaeva. She looks as if she is in the top eight, she gets the white

:42:19.:42:28.

flag. Shara Proctor it is still lying in second place. Nobody has

:42:28.:42:34.

surpassed her. That was produced in the first round. Apart from the

:42:34.:42:44.
:42:44.:42:58.

Done further outdoors than she has indoors. That looks good actually,

:42:58.:43:04.

very close to the sort of distance that Shara Proctor achieved. It has

:43:04.:43:09.

just come up on the scoreboard that actually Shara Proctor has passed

:43:09.:43:16.

her second round jump. I think she is of the opinion has 6.6 to one is

:43:16.:43:22.

going to be enough to put her through to the final. Jarder is

:43:22.:43:27.

delighted with her jump. A big lifetime best for her, in the

:43:27.:43:37.
:43:37.:43:43.

second heat in the 60m hurdles. Not as quick as the first heat. We

:43:43.:43:48.

shall see who goes through as the fastest loser.

:43:48.:43:52.

Wouldn't have a chance to show you the final result from that first

:43:52.:44:02.
:44:02.:44:23.

heat, let us remind ourselves, it close as the first two. Going in

:44:23.:44:33.

lane seven, the man, as I said, very much the favourite for the

:44:33.:44:43.
:44:43.:44:43.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:44:43.:45:27.

We've lost that Ukrainian. 7.52. That's pretty shop for the first

:45:27.:45:37.
:45:37.:45:38.

runs on a couple of occasions, but that is pretty sharp. Talk about

:45:38.:45:48.
:45:48.:45:52.

his style, really low. Wheelie could, make him more aggressive in

:45:52.:46:02.
:46:02.:46:12.

to bat first hurdle, set himself up better. At 752 - match but 7.52 is

:46:12.:46:22.
:46:22.:46:23.

time, you can sometimes take some risks. When you do take those risks

:46:23.:46:28.

you end up a bit cleaner. For me, he's not under pressure, he can put

:46:28.:46:32.

a nice, decent performance out. You can't ask for much more at this

:46:32.:46:38.

time of the day. He is Europe's number one. He's round at 7.50.

:46:38.:46:42.

He's confident. But he also would have seen that first heat and said

:46:42.:46:52.
:46:52.:47:06.

to himself, hang on, I am the main from the young Russian. We were

:47:06.:47:09.

talking about the Russians earlier, about the sort of Championships

:47:09.:47:13.

they may have. They've got a slightly weakened team here. They

:47:13.:47:23.
:47:23.:47:55.

will be looking to the likes of qualifying distance of 6.65 yet. I

:47:55.:47:58.

just wonder if that's an improvement. It does look as though

:47:58.:48:08.
:48:08.:48:08.

it is. -- it doesn't look as though it is. Kucherenko, 6.48 in the

:48:08.:48:13.

first round. She's way behind the board. She's lost 20 centimetres

:48:13.:48:21.

plus. That is quite decisive. She needs to put it all into a third

:48:21.:48:31.
:48:31.:48:37.

round jump to make sure she gets a indoor champion. 6.62 in the first

:48:37.:48:41.

round. Backstays as the longest jump we've seen so far this morning.

:48:41.:48:47.

Didn't really get the take-off spot on there. It looked a little bit

:48:47.:48:52.

flat. Judging by her reaction when she came out of the pit, she knew

:48:52.:48:59.

that wasn't terribly good. A couple of jumpers behind her in the

:48:59.:49:03.

standings at the moment, including Shara Proctor, decided to pass on

:49:03.:49:13.
:49:13.:49:21.

their second jumps. Klishina still she's sitting comfortably in the

:49:21.:49:25.

top eight, that will get her through to the final tomorrow.

:49:25.:49:29.

She's just waiting to see whether a few of the athletes go further.

:49:29.:49:32.

Let's talk about the context of this competition for work. She had

:49:32.:49:36.

a great year last year, world indoor bronze medal. Then the real

:49:36.:49:41.

disappointment of London. Yes, she jumped so well in the

:49:41.:49:44.

qualifications in London. I think she got a bit overawed by the

:49:44.:49:49.

occasion. I think she was thinking about the outcome before the final.

:49:49.:49:53.

So she then did and jumped well in the final, finished fifth. She

:49:53.:49:58.

could have meddled there. But she's such a good run on the runway.

:49:58.:50:04.

Noticing some of the girls have similar inaccuracies on the runway,

:50:04.:50:09.

she is spot on the board. She's having no problems with her one up

:50:09.:50:19.
:50:19.:50:23.

6.61, that was automatic qualification, 6.65. No athletes so

:50:23.:50:31.

This is an important competition for her, after what happened in

:50:31.:50:35.

London, she will really want to come here and make an impact.

:50:35.:50:41.

at it. She knows she can jump big distances, but what is missing is

:50:41.:50:44.

the medals. I think this could really set her up nicely for the

:50:44.:50:54.
:50:54.:51:30.

rest of the season, should she make fastest losers. Around about 7.76

:51:30.:51:40.
:51:40.:51:50.

will get you in at the moment if the Italians have coming through at

:51:50.:52:00.
:52:00.:52:24.

first three heats and the form of Martinot-Lagarde and Shubenkov.

:52:24.:52:34.
:52:34.:52:47.

heats. You want to qualify, you want to save a little bit of energy,

:52:47.:52:51.

you want to look impressive to the other competitors have gone so far.

:52:51.:52:58.

But also, technique needs to be spot on. Any little slippy and you

:52:58.:53:08.
:53:08.:53:08.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:53:08.:53:50.

start of the day. Bascou seemed to get out there pretty sharpish.

:53:50.:53:58.

Bascou is the main form guy from France. He's the one we'd all look

:53:58.:54:02.

forward to being the number one from that country. It's the Italian

:54:02.:54:12.
:54:12.:54:23.

what they're going to do with that. I think everybody is waiting to see

:54:23.:54:32.

what the marksman decides. Bascou is trying to look as small as

:54:32.:54:36.

possible here, hiding behind some of the other athletes. For on the

:54:36.:54:40.

computer it's not coming up as a false start, but we could see him

:54:40.:54:49.

twitch. Bascou wants the finger but the grim Reaper has come for him.

:54:49.:54:54.

It's not coming up as a false start and he's trying to plead his case,

:54:54.:55:00.

but we know that this is a lost cause. The rule is you've got to be

:55:00.:55:04.

stationary in the blocks when the starter it puts you in that set

:55:04.:55:07.

position. There's not supposed to be any movement whatsoever. We saw

:55:07.:55:15.

clearly that he moved. Let's see if he can argue or negotiate himself

:55:15.:55:25.
:55:25.:55:37.

like his negotiation powers have allowed him back in. He will be

:55:37.:55:41.

relieved. Let's hope that he can just focus now one what he needs to

:55:42.:55:48.

do and qualifies. The next time I'm up in court, I want him to be my

:55:48.:55:58.
:55:58.:56:23.

John Drummond when he was trying his little heart out, just sat

:56:23.:56:33.
:56:33.:56:33.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:56:33.:57:17.

there on the track eventually and for the minor places, but no doubt

:57:17.:57:27.
:57:27.:57:32.

about the winner. Paolo Audel great start by the Italian. Put

:57:32.:57:35.

pressure on everybody straightaway. He's clattering barriers on his way

:57:35.:57:45.
:57:45.:57:46.

down. Incredible. A Askou is going to have to wait because his

:57:46.:57:53.

opponents just seemed to sneak through ahead of him. -- Bascou.

:57:53.:57:58.

7.59 for the winner. Look at the Italian here. Untidy trail leg,

:57:58.:58:02.

he's dragging those barriers down with that trail leg, but it doesn't

:58:02.:58:08.

matter, he gets to the line first. An equal personal best of 7.59. A

:58:08.:58:16.

strong performance. We had confirmation of the times. I think

:58:16.:58:19.

Bath School survived his false start, he survived here as well as

:58:19.:58:29.
:58:29.:58:40.

one of the fastest losers, 7.72 his the full results as and when we get

:58:40.:58:50.
:58:50.:58:58.

for this qualification in the eliminated. But with that jump, I

:58:58.:59:02.

think she could have put herself in quite a strong position. The best

:59:02.:59:10.

so far, 6.46. Needs something close to 6.60 to guarantee she goes

:59:10.:59:14.

through to the final. She might well have done it with that. Shara

:59:14.:59:17.

Proctor, it remains to be seen whether she's going to take a third

:59:17.:59:27.
:59:27.:59:45.

and final jump. She passed on round final, at the moment. That was a

:59:45.:59:53.

tremendous take-off. She gets the white flag. Danny macro. She is

:59:53.:00:03.
:00:03.:00:16.

into a qualifying position now -- She is in 7th place, but there are

:00:16.:00:23.

still a lot of jumpers to come in this third and final round.

:00:23.:00:31.

The let us tidier things for you, this is how they finished. -- tidy

:00:31.:00:41.
:00:41.:01:14.

looking very good. As his Pascal participants in the men's 60m

:01:14.:01:24.
:01:24.:01:36.

It has been a great indoor season for you so far, word you pitch your

:01:36.:01:45.

is nice coming into the European Athletics Indoor Championships. At

:01:45.:01:50.

the end of the day, it counts what you do on the day, no matter what

:01:50.:01:54.

fast time someone may have been running. Someone may come out of

:01:54.:02:04.
:02:04.:02:11.

nowhere. I have to do what I usually do, not become complacent.

:02:11.:02:19.

You have shot up the list of the best UK times, up of all time. Have

:02:19.:02:29.
:02:29.:02:32.

I work hard, I trained hard with my coach, he wants the best for me.

:02:32.:02:38.

The times, be surprised me, maybe. I am running pretty quick. You

:02:38.:02:48.
:02:48.:02:50.

always seem to want more, as an faster. I accept I am happy with

:02:50.:02:56.

lot to prove after the disappointment of last summer,

:02:56.:03:06.
:03:06.:03:10.

this heat. A newly-laid track, more of that in a moment. Not too

:03:10.:03:15.

difficult qualification for Perri Shakes-Drayton. She is on the

:03:15.:03:25.
:03:25.:03:34.

outside. The first two will go be something which might even help

:03:34.:03:44.
:03:44.:03:44.

Perri Shakes-Drayton. Hjelmer recently running a personal

:03:44.:03:54.
:03:54.:04:05.

YouTube, 400m indoors is two laps - - is new to you. You have to make a

:04:05.:04:10.

choice, you either get in front and control it from there, or sit

:04:10.:04:17.

behind. Hjelmer is not close enough. This is pretty quick through the

first 200, given this is a qualification round. She can relax

a bit but not too much. In great form this winter. She set her stall

out to do well individually on the flat, not just wanted to be part of

:04:33.:04:37.

the relay squad. A really strong performance from her in the first

round. That is not a bad start at all. She could have sauntered

:04:59.:05:21.

Eilidh Child is going in heat three. metres. A good rehearsal. When she

:05:21.:05:25.

goes through the rounds, she will come up against better competition.

:05:25.:05:30.

She will want to take how she goes through the first 200 metres. Does

she want to go in front was it behind.

:05:34.:05:40.

That was about staying away, trying to control the race. She didn't

look to be fading too much in the final 50 either.

enough, the coach was talking to me through a window because he never

to your rivals. I didn't expect to go out that fast in my first round.

Exactly. You are looking good again. How did it feel for you? It was a

little rough. It's 10am, it's 9am back in the UK. I was a little

:26:34.:26:36.

Shara Proctor safely through in the long jump. All three women through

:26:36.:26:41.

in the 400m. Hurdles, because it's all the hurdlers doing it on the

:26:41.:26:45.

Flat. What can I say? Sally Gunnell was always successful as well. It's

:26:45.:26:50.

not too much of a surprise that the hurdlers are doing it with great

:26:50.:27:00.
:27:00.:27:02.

form. What a wonderful performance most comfortable of the qualifiers.

:27:02.:27:07.

I think she surprised herself. what I loved about this is she is

:27:07.:27:10.

in the outside lane, so what she decides to do is run her own race.

:27:10.:27:15.

This is what I'm here to do, I'm not going to mix up with anybody.

:27:15.:27:19.

She ran a committed race. She didn't try to play any games. Just

:27:19.:27:22.

a really controlled run. Even when you look at her face, she was

:27:22.:27:27.

focused on what was necessary, she went round all the corners well,

:27:27.:27:31.

there's no way obstructions. She just needed to do this. When she

:27:31.:27:36.

looked at the time she said, oh, I'm surprised at the time. But when

:27:36.:27:39.

you are in great shape, as she is demonstrating, it's not really a

:27:39.:27:45.

surprise. It's probably as easy to run like that as it is to maybe say,

:27:46.:27:53.

I'm going to run out at playing it at conserving energy. I always say,

:27:53.:27:58.

don't mess about. Just do what you can do. If you are capable of

:27:58.:28:02.

running 51 seconds, run 51 seconds. It's not going to take anything out

:28:02.:28:07.

of her because she is a well trained athlete, she's in great

:28:07.:28:11.

shape and good condition. looked good, as did Eilidh Child.

:28:11.:28:15.

Not quite as quick but again, she was in the right place at the right

:28:15.:28:18.

time. What I loved about this performance was a sense of

:28:18.:28:22.

awareness of what was happening around her. There were lots of

:28:22.:28:26.

women inside her who were quick and were pushing this early stage of

:28:26.:28:31.

the event. She didn't panic, she just gently accelerated. She didn't

:28:31.:28:35.

kick, because they kick can cause you some fatigue a little too early.

:28:35.:28:40.

She took control at the bell and now she can Brive. She's got clear

:28:40.:28:43.

heir to run through. Nothing to worry about. She will have a couple

:28:43.:28:47.

of glances at the screen to see where everybody is bad again, a

:28:47.:28:52.

really competent performance. I was watching her coach, Malcolm Arnold,

:28:52.:28:57.

on his stopwatch, taking all these times. No doubt he will feed that

:28:57.:29:00.

back to her shortly. Denise, you must have been particularly

:29:01.:29:06.

impressed with both Eilidh Child and Perri Shakes-Drayton.

:29:06.:29:11.

delighted with seeing the girls run. I expected both of them to qualify

:29:11.:29:16.

comfortably. They've been showing great form recently. Getting the

:29:16.:29:21.

balance right indoors without affecting your outdoor performance

:29:21.:29:25.

is a fine art. Should you do a bit more speed, should you still keep

:29:25.:29:29.

working on your speed and endurance? It's clear both those

:29:29.:29:32.

girls have still got more to do, but they are running well, they are

:29:32.:29:36.

into the semi-finals and it's great. Looking across the rest of those

:29:36.:29:40.

heats and the other runners who won, perhaps Perri, well, she did look

:29:40.:29:44.

the strongest not just on times but in terms of the rate she ran the

:29:44.:29:54.
:29:54.:29:59.

It was a good demonstration of what great shape I'm in, what I can do,

:29:59.:30:02.

what I can deliver and I'm just going to do that. It's brilliant to

:30:02.:30:08.

Yulia Kondakova began to fade a little bit. Instead, coming through

watching the pentathlon with a keen eye. You actually never did one of

these, what was your reasoning behind that? Usually, I was focused

:42:35.:42:39.

on my outdoor performance and I never felt I had enough speed in

:42:39.:42:43.

the winter months to justify being at the championships. It was a

:42:43.:42:49.

decision, I and maybe do if you events, but no pentathlon for me.

:42:49.:42:54.

Athletes have to make this decision, do they want to do seriously

:42:54.:42:59.

competitively indoors? Jessica and this does take the indoors very

:42:59.:43:05.

seriously. Silver medal at the world indoors last year, she chose

:43:05.:43:11.

to give it a miss this season. did, there has been a lot going on,

:43:11.:43:16.

be a busy few months for her. Really, I don't think she should do

:43:16.:43:20.

the indoors, and glad she is focusing solely on those World

:43:20.:43:25.

Championships in Moscow. Which leaves the pentathlon wide open

:43:25.:43:30.

here. Ekaterina Bolshova had the leading performers of the year. But,

:43:31.:43:38.

after that, the performances, it is very competitive.

:43:38.:43:43.

We will keep you updated with the pad triathlon. Heat three of the

field, but it will be tight again. In that lane three. The first four

:44:07.:44:17.
:44:17.:44:23.

through. In the middle, Svetlana Topilina. I think Veronica Borsi

:44:23.:44:30.

will go well. Alina Talay, the under 23 champion. She made the

:44:30.:44:36.

semi-finals at the Olympic Games. A very good indoor runner. Silver

:44:36.:44:43.

medal at the world indoors last year. Silver medal outdoors at the

:44:43.:44:53.
:44:53.:45:08.

European Championships last year as talking about the fact that this is

:45:08.:45:12.

probably one of the most competitive events at these

:45:12.:45:16.

European Indoor Championships. The first four only through to the

:45:16.:45:26.
:45:26.:45:51.

She beat Yvette Lewis recently in her last race before coming to

:45:51.:45:56.

these championships. Coming through nicely towards the end. Topilina

:45:56.:46:00.

just fading towards the end. The Italian, who's been having such a

:46:00.:46:10.
:46:10.:46:26.

good season, those three will go championships with a much stronger

:46:26.:46:30.

team, particularly in the women's events. I'm not sure they have too

:46:30.:46:33.

many medal chances but she is certainly the best one they have

:46:33.:46:43.

One of our Olympic champions here, Mo Farah is training and getting

:46:43.:46:47.

ready for the marathon in America. For Jess and Greg Rutherford, a

:46:47.:46:54.

slightly different excuse. You can see just there with the Beefeaters.

:46:54.:47:03.

She got a CBE. For Greg Rutherford, looking resplendent in his tales,

:47:03.:47:09.

he got an MBE. Nicola Adams got a gold medal in the boxing, she was

:47:09.:47:13.

alongside them. Together at the Palace, they were also together the

:47:13.:47:23.
:47:23.:47:31.

night they won that gold medal. It shoulders of Jessica Ennis. When I

:47:31.:47:39.

look back, I do feel there was so much pressure. My goodness, the

:47:39.:47:46.

fastest time ever by a heptathlete! Jess Ennis is flying. The whole of

:47:46.:47:50.

the heptathlon was nerve-racking, every event was nerve-racking in a

:47:50.:47:56.

different way. But the 800, it was that feeling of you've got so far,

:47:56.:48:06.
:48:06.:48:11.

you are practically there, you can be the Olympic champion. Everybody

:48:11.:48:16.

is on their feet. The pride of Sheffield, the pride of Great

:48:16.:48:26.
:48:26.:48:57.

the moment. Can he feed off this atmosphere? It's big! Can you

:48:57.:49:02.

believe what is happening in this stadium at the moment? 8.31. That

:49:02.:49:12.
:49:12.:49:20.

try and forget that, just think about how hard you work too.

:49:20.:49:30.
:49:30.:49:37.

can deny Greg Rutherford from Olympic gold. That is a fowl. Greg

:49:37.:49:45.

Rutherford is the Olympic champion. I don't think he can quite believe

:49:45.:49:55.
:49:55.:50:13.

The crowd are lifting him, they are cheering him on. Just 100m to go.

:50:13.:50:19.

Has he got enough? Mo Farah is going for it. It's going to be a

:50:19.:50:29.
:50:29.:50:43.

glorious win. Mo Farah for Great yourself? Of course it happened.

:50:43.:50:53.
:50:53.:50:58.

Three gold medals for Great Britain. We are sitting here asking, did

:50:58.:51:04.

that really happen? I mean... Colin and I was sitting next to each

:51:04.:51:08.

other in Singapore for the decision when Jack Roxette London rather

:51:08.:51:11.

than Paris. If you'd have told us then that we'd get a night like

:51:11.:51:17.

that we'd have said, no. Yes. It was breathtaking. I thoroughly

:51:17.:51:21.

enjoyed it. I went back to an athletics fan that evening. Forget

:51:22.:51:26.

the fact I was working with the BBC, I was absorbed with everybody else,

:51:26.:51:32.

with the excitement, the euphoric feeling. And the expectation. When

:51:32.:51:37.

the athletes still a good time and time... In, what, 45 minutes? It

:51:37.:51:44.

was remarkable. I'm glad I was there. And very different victories

:51:44.:51:48.

in their own weight. Let's start with Greg. We thought he was in

:51:48.:51:52.

with a chance but that was unexpected. Yes. I think he would

:51:52.:51:56.

have said that himself. He was thinking, right, I'm going to

:51:56.:52:02.

qualify well. Nobody was jumping very far. He just thought, right,

:52:02.:52:06.

he is my opportunity. He raised his game, launched himself and he had a

:52:06.:52:11.

just victory. It was tremendous. It was a long build-up. Remember way

:52:11.:52:15.

back when he was a 21-year-old and won his first silver medal in the

:52:15.:52:19.

championships, we all said, watch this man. But then he got injury

:52:19.:52:22.

upon injury. But to come to London and nail the performance when it

:52:23.:52:28.

matters, the Olympic Games, had to offer. And that was here in

:52:28.:52:33.

Gothenburg, the silver medal. For Jessica Ennis, she'd lost the world

:52:33.:52:37.

indoors in the Olympic year, and yet she was the face of the Games.

:52:37.:52:44.

Huge pressures. The weight of the world, or at least of Britain, on

:52:44.:52:50.

them. She started off with a new British record in the 100m hurdles.

:52:50.:52:53.

From thereon in we knew what we could expect. We were biting our

:52:53.:52:58.

nails when it came to that javelin. Was she going to be able to launch

:52:59.:53:02.

it successfully? She did that, everybody breathed a sigh of relief

:53:02.:53:07.

and then she took the 800m. What a great way to finish. She threw her

:53:07.:53:10.

hands up in the air. Relief, excitement, every single emotion in

:53:10.:53:14.

the world went through her body at that time. I remember the

:53:14.:53:18.

conversations that you and I have about chess. I said, maybe she's

:53:18.:53:23.

just a little bit small. No, she's full of spring. She demonstrated

:53:23.:53:31.

that. A really great asset to us in Great Britain. As Steve Cram said

:53:31.:53:37.

in commentary, it's over to you, Mo. Mo Farah has been coming for a very

:53:37.:53:41.

long time. We were wondering if he could really turn the magic on

:53:41.:53:45.

against the East Africans, Kenyans and Ethiopians. He took a bold

:53:45.:53:50.

decision after being the double European champion. We all went,

:53:50.:53:53.

you've just one two gold medals in major championships and you are

:53:53.:53:57.

leaving this set up to go to the US? We were anxious for him. But he

:53:57.:54:01.

proved us wrong and came back with a world championship gold medal and

:54:01.:54:05.

a silver medal and arrived in London in great shape. Again, a lot

:54:05.:54:09.

of expectation. We wanted him to go out there. We knew he could put the

:54:09.:54:15.

question was, was he going to? When he kicked in that final with 100m

:54:15.:54:20.

to go, everybody was... We lost our boys as, Breathless, it was

:54:20.:54:26.

fantastic. I felt I'd won it with him! And we did it a week later in

:54:26.:54:34.

the 5000m. Do you think Mo has got the credit he deserves for being a

:54:34.:54:40.

double Olympic... The 5000m and the 10,000 metres are dominated by the

:54:40.:54:46.

African nations. To come in and do that is beyond belief. We've had

:54:46.:54:51.

some great athletes, from Steve cram himself to Sebastian Coe and

:54:51.:54:54.

Steve Ovett. None have them have done doubles. He's done it in

:54:55.:54:58.

distance running against Supreme opposition. It goes to prove that

:54:58.:55:01.

the real quality of this man is there. But you don't know what

:55:01.:55:08.

you've lost until it's gone. When retiring and going to the marathon,

:55:08.:55:12.

then we will perhaps realise how great he is. We do appreciate what

:55:12.:55:17.

he's doing now but do we recognise his greatness? Perhaps not. Perhaps

:55:17.:55:22.

he just needs to break a world record. We hope that. It would be

:55:22.:55:25.

great if he did it in the Olympic Stadium. We are back there but two

:55:25.:55:31.

days of the London Diamond League. The legacy of the stadium rumbles

:55:31.:55:34.

on, West Ham are the preferred bidder and maybe they'll be playing

:55:34.:55:38.

football there but not in the near future. To have the London Grand

:55:38.:55:43.

Prix in the Olympic stadium is very special. I'm excited about it. A

:55:43.:55:46.

lot of people wanted to come to the Olympic Games and couldn't get

:55:46.:55:50.

tickets to go and see the stadium. Now this iconic venue, where people

:55:50.:55:55.

like Usain Bolt ran tremendously well, Jess Ennis won a gold medal,

:55:55.:55:58.

I think now people have the opportunity to come and see that

:55:58.:56:02.

Stadium. I'm hoping the athletes will have a full house to go and

:56:02.:56:06.

perform in. It's a great thing for the stadium, great thing for London

:56:06.:56:10.

and superb for British athletics. In terms of the pressure on those

:56:10.:56:16.

three athletes, and particularly on Greg, he took advantage of perhaps

:56:16.:56:21.

what was not the strongest long jump competition. He has got the

:56:21.:56:24.

Olympic champion against his name but he is perhaps not the best in

:56:24.:56:30.

the world. It's interesting. When you get the responsibility of being

:56:30.:56:33.

a major champion, then you've really got to take that on your

:56:33.:56:37.

shoulders. I think Greg will work certainly hard. Every single

:56:37.:56:41.

Championships that he's healthy, I'm seeing that he's going to get a

:56:41.:56:46.

medal. I'm saying, yes, stick with Greg, I think he can produce the

:56:46.:56:55.

goods. And he's still got an 8.50 jump in him. Let's get back to the

:56:55.:57:05.
:57:05.:57:06.

they all are. Talay winning that last heat. A pretty good

:57:06.:57:15.

performance from her. Topilina did go through. Pedersen with a new

:57:15.:57:24.

personal best. She will be one of the fastest losers. Yanit is

:57:24.:57:33.

definitely the best in terms of how she looked. O'Rourke may have an

:57:33.:57:43.
:57:43.:57:45.

outside chance of taking a medal is going to be close. It's going to

:57:45.:57:55.
:57:55.:57:58.

normally qualified and have their final on the same day. But

:57:58.:58:02.

yesterday evening was the scene for the qualifying competition for the

:58:02.:58:12.
:58:12.:58:12.

men's shot but final this evening. One of only three putters to go

:58:12.:58:22.
:58:22.:58:25.

over 20 metres. His best throw came in the third round. This was the

:58:25.:58:30.

second place athlete. A spinner who almost fell out of the circle. It

:58:30.:58:40.
:58:40.:58:48.

was a fine effort by him. A sitting very perilously close to

:58:48.:58:54.

where those shot put were landing. It was a great atmosphere in what

:58:54.:59:04.
:59:04.:59:05.

was called the market square European bronze medallist last

:59:05.:59:14.

season. 20.31. He actually sat out the second and third rounds,

:59:14.:59:19.

confident in the knowledge that he had qualified for the final. The

:59:19.:59:27.

organisers were after 20.15 in order to qualify for the final.

:59:27.:59:32.

Only the leader achieved that distance. The defending champion,

:59:32.:59:37.

Ralf Bartels, looked a little bit out of sorts. He finished in fifth

:59:37.:59:47.
:59:47.:59:58.

the men's triple jump qualifying. A favourite event in Sweden, in the

:59:58.:00:04.

field, because of the exploits of Olsson, and Jonathan Edwards, way

:00:04.:00:10.

back in 1995, which seems an age ago. The distance required... Sorry

:00:10.:00:18.

about that, Jonathan! The distance required for the final, 16.90. It

:00:18.:00:26.

was a long time ago! Marian Oprea, one of the best jumpers in the

:00:26.:00:33.

world. Olympics so well -- silver- medallist. He starts as one of the

:00:33.:00:43.
:00:43.:00:50.

medallist. Not quite as far as the distance which has been set, the

:00:50.:00:54.

qualifying distance. I can't honestly imagine eight jumpers will

:00:54.:01:04.
:01:04.:01:24.

far. Ruslan Samitov of Russia. 2013

:01:24.:01:30.

Russian indoor champion. He is a 17-metre jumper when he is that his

:01:30.:01:38.

best. Just 21 years old. 4th in the European junior championships some

:01:38.:01:47.

years ago. Not a very tall jumper, but very powerful. That yellow line

:01:47.:01:51.

will have another mine added to it in a while once the competition

:01:51.:01:56.

gets going, to show us how far the top eight have achieved in terms of

:01:56.:02:06.
:02:06.:02:16.

required but good enough for second place for the time being.

:02:16.:02:26.

STEVE CRAM: Moving to the first heat of the 400m men. This is how

:02:26.:02:36.
:02:36.:02:52.

be one to watch out for. The Irish are hoping Brian Gregan can bring

:02:52.:02:58.

home the gold in these championships. A good lane draw,

:02:58.:03:01.

not particularly fast out of the blocks. He has been running

:03:01.:03:09.

superbly well. A great new indoor facility in Ireland. A small team,

:03:09.:03:16.

only 11 here. This is the man they hope will do well, look how

:03:16.:03:21.

aggressively he has gone through the first 200 metres. That is quick.

:03:21.:03:29.

Nice and controlled. Right at the back, the Croatian is off the pace.

:03:29.:03:34.

A real scrap going on behind Brian Gregan, he has done well to keep

:03:34.:03:44.
:03:44.:03:48.

himself out of this. Hanne trying to finish quickly. He is OK. Hanne

:03:48.:03:55.

thought he was not going to be able to. A not very good first 200

:03:55.:04:02.

metres. Ruzic, too late to get into the race for him. A hint of what is

:04:02.:04:11.

to come from Brian Cregan. It will be interesting when they all come

:04:11.:04:21.
:04:21.:04:24.

together in the semis. COLIN JACKSON: These corners come

:04:24.:04:29.

up very quickly. Hit the front, just run your own

:04:29.:04:34.

steady pace. You can control the race. Brian Gregan is looking

:04:34.:04:40.

around. A bit of acceleration when necessary. A really good, solid

:04:40.:04:48.

performance, the first time I have seen him in the flesh run. A little

:04:48.:04:53.

disappointed, David McCarthy not here. Brian Gregan has been running

:04:53.:05:03.
:05:03.:05:05.

superbly well. Heading the European rankings this year. We will see

:05:05.:05:12.

Pavel Trenikhin shortly. Richard Strachan and Nigel Levine in the

:05:12.:05:22.
:05:22.:05:30.

next heat. That is how the first finals tomorrow. They have a chance

:05:31.:05:35.

to rest and recover if they don't get it quite right today.

:05:35.:05:45.

I can see below me the winner of A fine performance to start, of

:05:45.:05:49.

what is it like coming into these chamipionships, people looking at

:05:49.:05:54.

you as a strong medal contender? Any time I race in Ireland, there

:05:54.:06:01.

is a lot of pressure on me to win. It is another race for me. Once I

:06:01.:06:05.

give it my all, that is the main thing for me. Are you pleased with

:06:05.:06:12.

the way you did this? The main thing was to win. I stumbled once

:06:12.:06:22.
:06:22.:06:26.

or twice, the track is a little bit bubbly. -- bobbly. The first round

:06:26.:06:36.
:06:36.:06:48.

is hard, you have to get it right, first of three drums to qualify for

:06:49.:06:55.

tomorrow's final. The automatic qualifying line is plain to see at

:06:55.:07:05.

16.90 metres. Federov had promised a lot since he won a world youth of

:07:05.:07:11.

a medal in 2007. He became European junior champion a few years ago. He

:07:11.:07:17.

has all the credentials to become a five triple jumper and do well at

:07:17.:07:27.
:07:27.:07:31.

senior level. The second longest we anticipate a very strong event for

:07:31.:07:38.

Britain. Yes, it really should be. A false

:07:38.:07:46.

line-up, three guys running, Michael go benumbed, -- Michael

:07:46.:07:51.

Bingham, we need to see him successfully go through here today.

:07:52.:07:57.

Of the three British athletes, Nigel Levine is looking strongest.

:07:57.:08:02.

I would really like to see Nigel take it that one step further and

:08:02.:08:06.

come through in a strong way. Really interesting to see how

:08:06.:08:12.

Michael Bingham gets on hit in lane five. He has a good lane draw,

:08:12.:08:17.

hopefully not getting into any trouble. He hasn't run much but

:08:17.:08:21.

hopefully with his expense he should know what it is about,

:08:21.:08:25.

getting to the 200 metres, controlling it, put himself in

:08:25.:08:31.

position. Not having to get through it as a fastest loser. I agree with

:08:31.:08:37.

Paul Dickenson, it was a long time ago, 1995! Andrew, this is all

:08:37.:08:47.
:08:47.:08:52.

lane, he will see the back of Pavel Trenikhin, that Russian, very tall,

:08:52.:09:01.

in lane six, the form horse, four times he has won. He wouldn't think,

:09:01.:09:11.

Just the first two go through automatically, the four fastest.

:09:54.:09:58.

Michael Bingham is up very quickly, already alongside Pavel Trenikhin,

:09:58.:10:03.

they have different game plans. Michael Bingham is flying out.

being. Because it is instant at the bell, Denise Lewis, it shows how

:10:53.:10:56.

important it is to beat in the right place at the right time, as

:10:56.:11:01.

Michael Bingham was. Incidences happen, in the men's

:11:01.:11:05.

race, they are fighting. Michael Bingham made sure he was out of

:11:05.:11:13.

danger. The lead was changing a lot. It was really a good, solid run

:11:13.:11:20.

from him. Pavel Trenikhin was on the outside. He saw Michael Bingham

:11:20.:11:26.

go past but he took the view, he knew he was in good shape. Hears

:11:26.:11:31.

the man in form. He has put down the times this season, is strong,

:11:31.:11:38.

tall athlete. Michael Bingham was out fast, he chased the Russian

:11:39.:11:43.

down within the first bend. His plan was very clear. There's no way

:11:43.:11:48.

I am not going to be leading when we get to the 200. Her Michael, we

:11:48.:11:52.

expected him to go out quickly. He needed to command this race. He

:11:52.:11:59.

took charge there. Just making sure he was out of that incident. But,

:11:59.:12:03.

the Russian wasn't having any of it, he decided he would use the

:12:03.:12:08.

momentum created from the turn, into the straight, and took over

:12:08.:12:18.
:12:18.:12:19.

from Michael Bingham. Chen me kin macro showing he is a force to be

:12:19.:12:29.
:12:29.:12:31.

Watching yourself on the monitor, what is your verdict? I slowed down

:12:31.:12:35.

a little too much in the middle of the race, try to pace myself. But

:12:35.:12:43.

you cannot do that indoors. No excuses. Chipping up, and let the

:12:43.:12:53.
:12:53.:12:54.

pack catch me. -- Tripping. You saw all the bumping and barging going

:12:54.:12:59.

on behind you. I am trying to work on this indoors, it is very

:12:59.:13:06.

different. You don't have to switch pace so much. It is really just a

:13:06.:13:10.

progression from outdoors. I am happy to be here representing the

:13:10.:13:18.

team and hopefully you'll see me, and Team GB more often. Brian

:13:18.:13:23.

Gregan said he felt the track was bumpy. Did you find anything

:13:23.:13:30.

similar? No, just running a little bit different. When you come out of

:13:30.:13:34.

the turn, you have to make sure your stride is not so long because

:13:34.:13:44.
:13:44.:13:47.

you will abruptly hit the straight. the Russian looking very

:13:47.:13:51.

comfortable. Michael Bingham, very comfortably through to the semi-

:13:51.:14:01.
:14:01.:14:07.

lane five, the same as Michael Bingham, isn't Richard Strachan. A

:14:07.:14:11.

personal best he has run indoors this year. He perhaps didn't look

:14:11.:14:16.

quite as strong as we hoped he would in the Birmingham Grand Prix.

:14:16.:14:25.

Nigel Levine took that race. Maybe it was the big occasion.

:14:25.:14:31.

DENISE LEWIS: He knows he is in shape. Sometimes, you are unsure

:14:31.:14:35.

whether you can step up to the plate. He has a great opportunity

:14:35.:14:39.

at these championships. There is a medal up for grabs for one of these

:14:39.:14:46.

three. He has to be confident, he has to commit. The key is

:14:46.:14:52.

qualification here. He should, hopefully, if he stays out of

:14:52.:15:00.

danger, be in the mix. The recent athletes like this, a medal in a

:15:00.:15:05.

chair bishops can change your mind set. That first medal can elevate

:15:05.:15:10.

you. It confirms in your mind that you are progressing. The worst

:15:10.:15:20.
:15:20.:15:33.

thing is stagnation. That first ground can meet you very quickly,

:15:33.:15:37.

so you have to make sure your strides are shorter. That

:15:37.:15:41.

frequently takes you into the home straight. These early runs are

:15:41.:15:44.

about getting used to that, reminding the body what you need to

:15:44.:15:51.

do. He needs to work,. What we will probably see again is that he will

:15:51.:15:56.

go out and try to make sure he misses any of that hurly burly that

:15:56.:16:00.

happens when they all converge at the bell. It seems to be the

:16:00.:16:04.

strategy for everybody. It's a sure way of making sure that you are out

:16:04.:16:08.

of danger. The worst thing at this stage is to get tripped up and be

:16:08.:16:13.

out of the competition. We have restored communications to the

:16:13.:16:23.
:16:23.:16:31.

commentary box, so it's all yours, Richard Strachan is next to go,

:16:31.:16:35.

Michael Bingham safely through. Picking up on what Denise was

:16:35.:16:39.

saying, I was watching Richard last night practising coming off the

:16:39.:16:43.

bend and coming off from lanes 5 and 6. He's obviously intending

:16:43.:16:47.

doing what we all think he should do, which is to get out there and

:16:47.:16:57.
:16:57.:17:26.

Richard Strachan might be one to watch out for. He was leading and

:17:26.:17:31.

let the guy week saw run not particularly well in the first heat

:17:31.:17:37.

run on the inside. Maybe he will want to take Strachan on in this

:17:37.:17:47.
:17:47.:18:19.

of the blacks already. Going well in the middle is the Italian.

:18:19.:18:22.

Strachan has got to turn on the burners if he wants to take this

:18:22.:18:28.

lead. Strachan forces his way to the front. A little bit of a nudge

:18:28.:18:34.

their. Strachan is safely out in front. He's got to hold that

:18:34.:18:44.

position. There's a big surge from the Ukrainian. He was pushed. He

:18:44.:18:50.

goes off into lane six. No problem for Strachan, the first two will go

:18:50.:18:55.

through. But the young Frenchman, he's trying to make up some ground

:18:55.:19:02.

by dipping. A solid performance. It was all going on behind him. The

:19:02.:19:06.

young Frenchman was in a terrible position, trying to go through on

:19:06.:19:10.

the inside of the Italian. Decided to give him a bit of a shove, can't

:19:10.:19:14.

really do that. Even if he is good enough to be a fastest loser, I

:19:14.:19:21.

suspect we might see him being disqualified. Gounod's, the

:19:21.:19:29.

Italian... -- who knows, the Italian... It depends what they

:19:29.:19:37.

protest for. The most important thing for us is that Strachan is

:19:37.:19:41.

very successful and dominant in that race. He's always strong and

:19:41.:19:45.

quick, very committed to the early part of the race. He got out

:19:45.:19:50.

quickly on to the Ukrainian athlete's shoulders. You can kind

:19:50.:19:55.

but you are settled. Not being disrespectful to you, Steve, but

:20:16.:20:24.

lot of energy. He's checking his have distress himself. He will have

here because you are getting a chance to see how you performed.

:20:39.:20:45.

What's your perspective? Hello, mum. To get to the front to control the

:20:45.:20:55.

race. So important over the 200. I backed off a bit around the bend.

:20:55.:21:01.

The Ukrainian was just doing enough. Just about getting to the front and

:21:01.:21:05.

controlling the race. Steve Cram said he'd watch to practising

yesterday, getting used to this track. Obviously practice makes

:21:08.:21:18.

perfect. I was down here with Linford and by two training

:21:18.:21:23.

partners. We were all going round trying out different parts of the

:21:23.:21:28.

track. I like it. How much does it help you to be a part of that team,

:21:28.:21:31.

especially with Nigel in the same event as you are here? It helps a

:21:31.:21:37.

lot. Nigel had a lot of questions - are we friends, are we rivals? We

:21:37.:21:40.

are sharing a room out here today. Were having a good time, it's great

:21:40.:21:44.

that so many of us are here. And Conrad Williams, who would have

:21:44.:21:50.

been here in the relay team that had a slight niggle, that's a shame,

:21:50.:22:00.
:22:00.:22:01.

but the rest of the group is going surprise when Greco finished fourth

:22:01.:22:05.

in the Olympic final last year. He really is a young man with a lot of

:22:05.:22:15.
:22:15.:22:22.

first round. But limping out, that's a worry. He jumped over 70

:22:22.:22:25.

metres this year for one of the best jumps not only in Europe but

:22:25.:22:31.

the rest of the world as well. I wonder if that's just a touch of

:22:31.:22:41.
:22:41.:22:59.

too severe. I must admit that limp is a big worry for the Italian.

:22:59.:23:09.
:23:09.:23:14.

been disqualified. The silly thing there is the Italian, who, if he'd

:23:14.:23:17.

finished, could have been advanced through but he didn't actually

:23:17.:23:21.

finish the race. There was no reason why he shouldn't. He did

:23:21.:23:25.

look like a Premiership footballer going down in the penalty area, but

:23:25.:23:29.

he just stopped. Had he kept going round, his team could have

:23:29.:23:39.
:23:39.:23:42.

protested that he could have been never serves you well. Nigel Levine

:23:42.:23:52.
:23:52.:24:05.

is just about ready to go in the outside him. A good marker for him.

:24:05.:24:09.

We were talking about the strength of the women in this team and how

:24:09.:24:14.

that might come together for the relay, but the men's... The teams

:24:14.:24:18.

in some events, the great British team doesn't have any competitors

:24:18.:24:24.

and in some it is reasonably weak. But in the 400 in the men's and

:24:24.:24:34.
:24:34.:25:10.

the trend will continue, because the tactic seems to be from the

:25:10.:25:13.

British athletes in the 400 is to just get out there and avoid any

:25:13.:25:18.

trouble, but Maslak will be a hard man to get past. He made great

:25:18.:25:28.
:25:28.:25:35.

progress last year. He still just a indoors and it really does make a

:25:35.:25:45.
:25:45.:25:45.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

difference, on the indoor track it Maslak is out in front. Easy style

followed closely by Levine. Maslak having a look around. The been

:26:53.:27:03.
:27:03.:27:13.

behind the two athletes to come through to take the first and

:27:13.:27:16.

second spot. Everybody keeps checking their positions, wondering

:27:16.:27:25.

where they are. Nigel de be in deep to see if he could -- Nigel Duckett

:27:25.:27:32.

in deep to see if he could check on where he was. Lane five, good,

:27:33.:27:36.

strong lane draw. It allows him to focus on the main man in front of

:27:36.:27:46.
:27:46.:28:00.

happens inside. He has to cut a keep the timing. Don't want to use

:28:00.:28:03.

too much energy in these early rounds unless you really have to.

:28:03.:28:07.

You can see as it comes of this term, he thinks, should I have a

:28:07.:28:12.

bit of a goat to see if he's got a response? He digs in, Maslak sees

:28:12.:28:17.

him do that and put us on a bit more to maintain his position.

:28:17.:28:23.

done so far for the three British athletes. Maslak looking very

:28:23.:28:30.

comfortable there. The man in Up against one of your likely

:28:30.:28:36.

rivals this weekend for the Overall title, how was that? It was all

:28:36.:28:44.

right. I tried to win my heat but he's quite a strong guy. I've got

:28:44.:28:49.

to pick him up, respect to him. It's the European Championships,

:28:49.:28:53.

it's not going to be easy, we've got to work for it. The first round

:28:53.:28:57.

is out of the way. The next round, go back and talk to my coach and

:28:57.:29:02.

then go on from there for tomorrow. We spoke to Brian Gregan earlier on

:29:02.:29:05.

and he said the first round is always the hardest one to get your

:29:05.:29:10.

head around, it's a relief to get it out of the way - is that how you

:29:10.:29:19.

feel? Yes. If you can't run good in the first round, you are in trouble

:29:19.:29:22.

in the second. The been running well all season and have brought a

:29:22.:29:28.

great deal of confidence in. I've got a bit of confidence but that

:29:28.:29:38.
:29:38.:29:51.

got knocked a little. Let's bring Maslak. All three British athletes

:29:51.:29:57.

are safely through. Just to confirm the final line up

:29:57.:30:07.
:30:07.:30:31.

British athletes. -- two big in the pentathlon, now. Nadine

:30:31.:30:41.
:30:41.:30:43.

Broersen, 1.78. That is worth 953 points. Not the most accomplished

:30:43.:30:48.

high jump but in terms of technique. But, certainly, a very solid

:30:48.:30:58.
:30:58.:31:10.

performer. First-time clearances clearance, again. Hannah

:31:10.:31:15.

Melnychenko looking very solid indeed. She has had first time to

:31:15.:31:25.
:31:25.:31:29.

ounces ever since 1.69 metres. -- first-time clearances.

:31:29.:31:34.

Sofia Linde, a favourite here in Gothenburg. She did very well in

:31:34.:31:41.

the hurdles earlier today. That, I think, equals her lifetime best

:31:41.:31:51.
:31:51.:32:01.

the hurdles. In a little bit of trouble here. That is unusual. That

:32:01.:32:06.

she should be suffering at this height in the high jump. She has

:32:06.:32:11.

not got it. That could put his huge dent in her respirations to lift

:32:11.:32:21.

his gold medal and defend her title successfully. -- aspirations. She

:32:21.:32:24.

looked great in the hurdles, and earlier in the high jump, but it

:32:24.:32:31.

has all gone wrong. A relatively modest height.

:32:31.:32:36.

Let us look back at those 400m heats. Relatively comfortable for

:32:36.:32:46.

These early mornings are not easy. They clearly or had a strategy, and

:32:46.:32:50.

they executed it really well. It is nice to see that they are getting

:32:50.:32:53.

used to being in this arena, delivering on the expectations we

:32:53.:33:02.

have of them. Nigel Levine, do you think he was tried to make a point,

:33:02.:33:11.

in the home straight. -- trying. has seen how his mother team mates

:33:11.:33:16.

have run, he wanted to lead, but Pavel Maslak was strong, he looked

:33:16.:33:22.

really good. Nigel Levine had to concede and change his strategy and

:33:22.:33:26.

Coast and make sure he qualified comfortably. The scale of the

:33:26.:33:30.

challenge should not be underestimated. Brian Gregan is

:33:30.:33:35.

ranked number one in Europe. Pavel Maslak as well. It is tough to get

:33:35.:33:40.

onto the podium. It is. We talked about the opportunity to come away

:33:40.:33:46.

with a medal. No championships are easy. They have got the speed in

:33:46.:33:50.

their legs, they have to find another gear. We have a couple more

:33:50.:33:55.

races coming up, the men's 3,000 metres qualification. We are back

:33:55.:34:05.
:34:05.:34:21.

A lot of questions, I think, with Dwain Chambers. He struggled in

:34:21.:34:27.

Birmingham. He had run well earlier in Glasgow. He has injuries. He has

:34:27.:34:32.

got injured. His indoor performance should speak volumes. He has been

:34:32.:34:37.

very successful at wild and European indoors. Therefore, you

:34:37.:34:43.

cannot rule him out. He will have to come here and prove it tonight.

:34:43.:34:53.
:34:53.:34:56.

We also have Holly Bleasdale, men's 3,000 metres heats.

:34:56.:35:06.
:35:06.:35:21.

It is round one. The final takes this heat, Ingebrigtsen, the 1,500m

:35:21.:35:31.
:35:31.:35:34.

champion. And Arikan, he now races for Turkey, he used to race for

:35:34.:35:44.
:35:44.:35:57.

the European Championships last year, in the 1,500m. A glimpse,

:35:57.:36:07.
:36:07.:36:10.

Ingebrigtsen. We are ready for 15 fastest losers go through to the

:36:10.:36:19.

final. Arikan, easing his way through on the outside. Florian

:36:19.:36:27.

Carvalho takes them out. Pace is important in this. If it is a bit

:36:27.:36:32.

slow, others who are concerned they might be a fastest loser might pick

:36:32.:36:40.

things up. At the moment, dawdling around.

:36:41.:36:50.
:36:51.:36:55.

Paul lump capitals macro -- PAULA RADCLIFFE: they need to keep up the

:36:55.:37:05.
:37:05.:37:17.

Stephen Scullion. Also, boiling macro. Olionaird, in 4th place at

:37:17.:37:27.
:37:27.:37:49.

a training, then moved down to train with Mark Rowland.

:37:49.:37:59.
:37:59.:38:00.

Arikan is in front. Ingebrigtsen. Just in front of Olionaird. The

:38:00.:38:06.

pace at the moment, it has picked up a little bit. By no means the

:38:06.:38:10.

quickest 3,000 metres race. I do not think we are going to see

:38:10.:38:14.

super quick times here. Will probably see them dawdle around,

:38:14.:38:19.

then decide to do something over the closing laps. Maybe a bit

:38:20.:38:24.

quicker in the second heat if somebody decides to make the pace

:38:24.:38:32.

more decent from the start. A lot of people will be put in all their

:38:33.:38:42.
:38:43.:39:03.

position to make it through to tomorrow's final. He certainly is a

:39:03.:39:10.

very competent jump her. And, that looks much better. You can see the

:39:10.:39:16.

line there, where the top eight jumpers have jumped further than.

:39:16.:39:21.

An orange qualifying line and a green in 8th place line. He has

:39:21.:39:26.

suddenly gone in excess of that. It is still Daniele Greco, the young

:39:26.:39:31.

Italian, who is way ahead of everybody here. But, that is good,

:39:31.:39:37.

nice rhythm, good speed as well. He still may need a little bit more,

:39:37.:39:43.

depending on how everybody else goes in this qualifier. It is an

:39:43.:39:53.
:39:53.:40:00.

Rocking and rolling, just a little, on the runway. A slightly different

:40:00.:40:10.
:40:10.:40:10.

style but the result is good. A very powerful jumper, and

:40:10.:40:18.

incredibly strong man end of the weights room. A good take-off. He

:40:18.:40:21.

pounds down the runway, that is very close to the automatic

:40:21.:40:31.
:40:31.:40:38.

qualifier. Second longest we have man do much here today. Harold

:40:38.:40:47.

Correa, 15. 71 in the first round. That is better, much, much better

:40:47.:40:53.

by Harold Correa. He certainly has jumped into contention with that

:40:53.:41:00.

second round jump. An abortive attempt in the first round, where

:41:00.:41:03.

he almost bailed out of the job halfway down, he knew it wasn't

:41:03.:41:08.

quite right. Losing a bit on the board which I am sure he will

:41:08.:41:14.

correct as the final progress has tomorrow. But, that is a super jump.

:41:14.:41:21.

Still waiting for the distance, we have seen it. 16. 76. A good effort,

:41:21.:41:31.
:41:31.:41:46.

macro. Four will go through automatically. And the four fastest

:41:46.:41:56.
:41:56.:42:03.

close attendance, Ingebrigtsen. Florian Carvalho is there as well.

:42:03.:42:10.

Again, the pace is quickening, as it has to. You can see a bunch,

:42:10.:42:16.

with three and a half laps remaining. Stephen Scullion, the

:42:16.:42:20.

Northern Irish champion, looking to make sure of his place here in the

:42:20.:42:25.

final. Stephen Scullion is not the fastest

there. If you want to run close to eight minutes, about 64 second laps.

:50:10.:50:20.
:50:20.:50:22.

If you are outside... It looks to me as if it has slowed somewhat.

:50:22.:50:26.

It's something you've got to be aware of. You run a three or four

:50:26.:50:31.

laps and it's hard to get back. Some of these guys, they are not in

the Mo Farah League where they can pick up five seconds easily over

the last 800m. You want to keep it a steady, even pace. Maybe for that

reason, traverse of Ireland sensing it has slowed and just moving it on

University's 1500m champion. Higuero chose this event and ran 26

:51:30.:51:34.

seconds for the last 200m to win. That's the sort of race he would

:51:34.:51:41.

like. A slow run race. He's the second of the Spaniards in this.

:51:42.:51:47.

Roberto Alaiz is in third place at the moment. But he still got lots

:51:47.:51:52.

of pace to burn. He will be hoping that it only be heats but the final

are more tactical race. John Travers has picked up the pace a

:52:08.:52:27.

and then have a huge injection of pace. Maybe he wants to run out to

:54:34.:54:43.

test himself a little bit ahead of the final. Kowal doesn't seem to

:54:43.:54:47.

want to go out on his own to close that gap. He's really concentrating

:54:47.:54:53.

on keeping his position in that top four. He's thrown in a couple of

:54:53.:54:57.

fast laps. The danger you have if you are Kowal and you are at the

:54:57.:55:01.

back, you make the big move, you've got to make even more effort to go

:55:01.:55:05.

with this. He's obviously decided he doesn't want to make that effort.

:55:05.:55:14.

He's got enough pace that he'd hope... Now he's got to contend

with Halil Akkas. That little group, the other ones will contend second,

place. Looking threatening. No doubt about the leader. I'm

:55:49.:55:52.

surprised he's going quite so hard as this. I think this will be a

:55:52.:55:59.

dress rehearsal for the final. I think Ibrahimov will be trying to

:55:59.:56:03.

run the legs of the men in this. Eakin eased through the last lap,

:56:03.:56:09.

he will hear the bell this time. Ibrahimov has won more glance over

looking over his shoulder. A fairly swift 7.50 for qualification. Kowal

:56:39.:56:44.

is checking behind him. It will be the two Spaniards who will join

:56:54.:56:54.

Kowal. Higuero doing enough. Ibrahimov shaking his legs. I

:56:54.:56:59.

suspect he is in the sort of shape where he will think, I can run

close to 7.40, I might get away from every point -- everyone come

deficit. I think he will recover From a British point of view, it's

She qualified comfortably with 6.61. She was very composed, her

well in the final, but she played a really cool and that bodes well.

Then we saw that two 400 because qualifications, men's and women's.

All six got through. So times we have a few surprises. One we have a
