Welcome to Gothenburg in Sweden, a city with a sporting past to be

:00:12.:00:18.

proud of. Back in 1958, it was up one of the host venues for the

:00:18.:00:22.

football World Cup and the European Championships in 1992. Figure-

:00:22.:00:29.

skating gold medals have been won here and stays but the world and

:00:29.:00:31.

the European Athletics Championships and we are back again,

:00:31.:00:35.

this time of the 32nd European Indoor Championships, an event

:00:35.:00:37.

which has always gone well for the British teams.

:00:37.:00:43.

COMMENTATOR: Coming away and looking full of fight. Linford

:00:43.:00:48.

Christie takes the gold! Another 20 metres throw for Geoff

:00:48.:00:55.

Capes. John Regis will get gold. And it is a new world indoor

:00:55.:01:00.

record! Helen Clitheroe against the gold! De Jason Gardener is the

:01:00.:01:09.

champion. It is called for Mo Farah. -- gold 4 Mo Farah.

:01:09.:01:12.

So we are all set for the next chapter in these championships.

:01:12.:01:18.

Gothenburg looking great in the sunshine but already chilly,

:01:18.:01:23.

hosting the European Indoor Championships in 1984 and 1954,

:01:23.:01:27.

with Christian also and the triple jumper hailing from the City, this

:01:27.:01:34.

is a place with athletics in its blood. So welcome back to the

:01:34.:01:41.

Scandinavium Arena. Robin Cousins won his medal here, the ice rink is

:01:41.:01:46.

another track. The British team has been on song.

:01:46.:01:52.

The quickest we have seen from join chambers for I don't know how long

:01:52.:01:59.

-- Dwain Chambers. Holly Bleasdale sales over this time. Jenny Meadows

:01:59.:02:07.

will win this one. It is bronze for Britain and Robbie Grabarz. It will

:02:07.:02:16.

be a fight to the line here. Lots of big British names out this

:02:16.:02:20.

afternoon, none more so than Dwain Chambers who goes in the heat of

:02:20.:02:24.

the men's 60m, Jenny Meadows captaining the team, she is in the

:02:24.:02:32.

women's 800m heats, semi-finals of the men's and women's 60m with

:02:32.:02:37.

strong British representation. Laura Muir and then the finals of

:02:37.:02:44.

the 60m hurdles towards the end of the programme. In the field, Holly

:02:44.:02:47.

Bleasdale, Robbie Grabarz, the Olympic bronze medallist and Yamile

:02:47.:02:51.

Aldama goes in the triple jump qualification. A couple of

:02:51.:02:57.

superstars in the studio as well. Denise and Paula. Les hear from

:02:57.:03:06.

deke mind at the new -- let's hear from the man at the top, Peter

:03:06.:03:10.

Eriksson, taking over from Charles van Commenee.

:03:10.:03:14.

Peter, it seems fitting, the head coach of UK Athletics in your home

:03:14.:03:18.

country of Sweden for your first maiden championship. How does it

:03:18.:03:24.

feel? It is great. I have not been home for many years. It is great to

:03:24.:03:28.

come home and be the first championship, this is what to look

:03:28.:03:33.

forward to, to be at the big event. I think we have a great team to do

:03:33.:03:37.

well. You have gone for a team which has got people in their, top

:03:37.:03:41.

six potential right across the board. Is that fair to say? Your

:03:41.:03:51.
:03:51.:03:52.

eyes, UK Sport and the lottery funding is investing in sport. A

:03:52.:03:59.

young team, average age of 22 years. A good team and good coaching staff

:03:59.:04:04.

and support staff so I am really positive. A lot of pressure coming

:04:04.:04:08.

on to the team and we have so many youngsters but I do not see that as

:04:08.:04:12.

a stumbling Stone for doing well. You can hope for a certain amount

:04:12.:04:18.

of medals but I don't even go that way, by just try to get the best

:04:18.:04:24.

out of the Bartlett. And that is what we will value. You had

:04:24.:04:29.

fantastic success with the Great Britain Paralympics team, and a

:04:29.:04:34.

Cockcroft says he is our friend as well as our coach but he knows when

:04:34.:04:39.

to be scary as well! That sounds like a winning formula. I can be

:04:39.:04:47.

tough when it needs to be tough. Otherwise you would be

:04:47.:04:51.

steamrollered all the time. And too scared!

:04:52.:04:59.

New head coach and new glasses, different from his other classes.

:04:59.:05:04.

He is very different in demeanour from Charles van Commenee. Yes, a

:05:04.:05:11.

very warm and friendly man. They have had quite a strict regime

:05:11.:05:14.

under Charles van Commenee. Both men have very different approaches

:05:14.:05:18.

but very different pressures. Charles was focused on the Olympic

:05:18.:05:25.

success, the team had to do well so he had to be tough from the outset

:05:25.:05:28.

so Eriksson, it is about making unity and addressing some of the

:05:29.:05:34.

issues that were underlying, behind the scenes, behind the scenes with

:05:34.:05:38.

the coaches and management and he had stride to Smith that as well as

:05:38.:05:43.

bring up the best in the athlete. And the Paralympic athletes, they

:05:43.:05:46.

had a very bad athletics competition in Beijing but he

:05:46.:05:54.

turned it around for London. He s and made it one big family -- yes,

:05:54.:06:01.

and made one big family. I think he is bringing people to have more

:06:01.:06:06.

unity here and at the end of the day, an athlete wants to go out and

:06:06.:06:09.

perform, they do not need to be bullied, they know what they need

:06:09.:06:14.

to do. I would liked you have seen him give a few more people a chance

:06:14.:06:19.

here, to go out and learn and grow. Although he is a new head coach, he

:06:19.:06:23.

is still part of a system which is very much focused on the top end.

:06:23.:06:27.

Not so much on letting athletes come and learn from the experience

:06:27.:06:31.

of getting to a championships. is what we are witnessing here. It

:06:31.:06:35.

would have been nice to fill some of the gaps. Not just let athletes

:06:35.:06:39.

come for the sake of it but athletes and athletics are learning

:06:39.:06:45.

processes. It is something you learn, you have to craft. It is a

:06:45.:06:49.

daunting place out there for a youngster and unless you have the

:06:49.:06:52.

opportunity to manage yourself in that environment, you will never

:06:52.:06:57.

learn. You were particular critical, Paula, perhaps slightly indiscreet

:06:57.:07:05.

tweets! "completely ridiculous", the selection? A little bit

:07:05.:07:09.

ridiculous! I just felt this was the perfect opportunity to give

:07:09.:07:13.

young guys like Chris Robertson, the chance to come here and see

:07:13.:07:17.

what they could do but you talk about during people at the deep end.

:07:17.:07:25.

Hands and -- and sometimes you have to take that chance. In the

:07:25.:07:29.

distance events, David Sharpe winning, look at that. He may have

:07:29.:07:33.

not been on that team today but he was able to capitalise on things

:07:33.:07:38.

like that. Especially events like the women's 800, you have got the

:07:38.:07:42.

top 10 in the world and only one is here. I am hoping that Steve Cram

:07:42.:07:48.

and Colin Jackson in the commentary box, we have got the camera

:07:48.:07:52.

pointing at them. A bit of context for this championship. Straight

:07:52.:07:56.

after the Olympic Games, what should we be expecting? We were

:07:56.:08:01.

discussing earlier on today, a bit of a mixed bag today. Post Olympics,

:08:01.:08:05.

lots of big names. A fair share of our big names who are not here,

:08:05.:08:11.

they are taking time to recover and they want to ease himself back in.

:08:11.:08:18.

It is not only the Brit doing that a. -- not only the Brits doing that.

:08:18.:08:26.

You get some new faces and some stars and the youngsters as Paula

:08:26.:08:32.

was talking about, top level of competition experience. It is a

:08:33.:08:36.

good competition where, if you think back to Paris, Helen

:08:36.:08:44.

Clitheroe winning and Jodie Williams winning. I agree, but also

:08:44.:08:46.

you need to come to the championships with that the real

:08:46.:08:51.

reasons to come. If you want to perform well, you have to do so.

:08:51.:08:55.

When the athletes set themselves a target to perform, they still have

:08:55.:09:00.

to deliver. He has gone by, they did not have world juniors, under

:09:00.:09:06.

23 championships, lot of athletes would come to these events -- in in

:09:06.:09:11.

years gone by. It is not needed as much now. I think expectations

:09:11.:09:17.

should be quite strong on them. Steve and Colin, your thoughts of

:09:17.:09:21.

Peter Eriksson as the new head coach. Probably quite a different

:09:21.:09:26.

approach to what Charles created. Yes, while you were talking about

:09:26.:09:32.

it, Colin and I were chatting. I am not sure, but I think we overplay

:09:32.:09:36.

this. Peter is the head coach because his job is to ensure -

:09:36.:09:40.

particularly the coaches below him and working in a world-class

:09:40.:09:47.

programme and working with the coaches - that everybody is doing

:09:47.:09:51.

their job well when they come here. If they are doing their job well,

:09:51.:09:54.

that creates a great environment for the athlete. Peter Cook will

:09:54.:09:59.

only meet the athletes every now and then. He does not night --

:09:59.:10:09.
:10:09.:10:11.

Peter will only meet. Charles had his way of doing things and Peter

:10:11.:10:14.

will have his own worth. He can't always affect how an athlete will

:10:14.:10:18.

perform, that is how well they have trained, they must work with their

:10:18.:10:21.

coaches and hopefully they arrive in good shape and ready to do well

:10:21.:10:26.

and Peter's job is to create the right environment. His language is

:10:26.:10:30.

a bit different, talking about them doing their best and Charles might

:10:30.:10:39.

have said that he would not accept second best, a different tone

:10:39.:10:44.

almost. I do not think any athlete comes to a championship to please a

:10:44.:10:49.

head coach. I don't think any athlete to be coming to an event to

:10:49.:10:52.

please Peter Eriksson or Charles van Commenee, they should becoming

:10:52.:10:57.

here to do the best they can. They will have their own expectations.

:10:57.:11:01.

We must recognise that. A collective environment, it is

:11:01.:11:07.

important to set the framework to allow athletes to compete at their

:11:07.:11:12.

best. Of course there will have targets, no sport comes to this and

:11:12.:11:16.

does not think it will matter to win medals, that would be nonsense

:11:16.:11:20.

but he is correct to say that he wants people to come to perform to

:11:20.:11:24.

the best of their ability. You do not what people going home thinking

:11:24.:11:26.

they could not perform well because of something the team had done, he

:11:26.:11:34.

must make sure that is the case. You are spot on there, Steve. I

:11:34.:11:37.

think he wants to create a warm atmosphere where athletes may be

:11:38.:11:40.

struggling and they would like to talk to him about something.

:11:40.:11:44.

Sometimes you can feel that. Sometimes people could feel they

:11:44.:11:49.

would not be able to dare to talk to Charles. Yes, a different

:11:49.:11:52.

environment but his job is to look after the coaching side and the

:11:52.:11:57.

medical side and everything else. Let me bring you in, Denise. You

:11:57.:12:01.

reacted to what Steve Cram said, people reacting to what Charles

:12:02.:12:07.

wanted. I think it is taking responsibility and ownership of how

:12:07.:12:11.

you go about your business so I think from what I can gather from

:12:11.:12:15.

what I have seen and heard about Charles, it was about what you did

:12:15.:12:21.

in the everyday and preparation to the championships. Not necessarily

:12:21.:12:24.

about what you did here, although that was important, but the

:12:24.:12:29.

decisions you make a bad way you train, the you train with and your

:12:29.:12:35.

training programme. -- the decisions about the way you train.

:12:35.:12:39.

Some people needed more guidance in that than others. The bits Charles

:12:39.:12:45.

perhaps become too big a personality -- did Charles?

:12:45.:12:48.

they are very different people but like Denise says, athletes are

:12:48.:12:53.

different people. Some athletes do not need any pushing in training

:12:53.:12:56.

and build up and preparation and certainly in racing, there are

:12:56.:13:01.

always trying to get the best out of themselves. Others may be less

:13:01.:13:04.

professional in that built up and need the guidance. Sometimes it is

:13:04.:13:09.

not always the younger athletes, sometimes it is the athletes who do

:13:09.:13:15.

not have that innate perspective and focus and a thick Charles did

:13:15.:13:18.

something to put people into that a bit more than somebody who needs

:13:19.:13:23.

that guidance may struggle a bit more under Peter but somebody who

:13:23.:13:27.

is well able to push themselves and focus themselves will flourish and

:13:27.:13:33.

perform well. No medal predictions from year but our pundits, Where

:13:33.:13:40.

Angels fear to tread! This is what they think will happen. A divide

:13:40.:13:45.

studio and it, too, Steve Cram and Colin Jackson are going

:13:45.:13:51.

conservatively but four at the front from Denise and Paula with 12

:13:51.:13:55.

and nine medals. Five gold medals, for Denise. Name them. I am a

:13:56.:14:01.

feeling optimistic. Looking at the men's and the women's 4x400. If we

:14:01.:14:07.

do not get golds. Then you add Robbie Grabarz and the high jump, I

:14:07.:14:11.

am hoping that Holly Bleasdale can do the business in the pole vault

:14:11.:14:15.

and then we have got Helen Clitheroe moment where an

:14:15.:14:21.

unexpected person who goes beyond what we think is possible. The is

:14:21.:14:26.

that five? That is five! And what is your prediction for gold

:14:26.:14:36.
:14:36.:14:39.

Plummer? We hope that Holly Bleasdale is OK, she sprayed hair

:14:39.:14:45.

spray on her I it and she was using hair straighteners, I do not know

:14:45.:14:50.

why she needed then. You have gone for 12. Let's go to the commentary

:14:50.:14:56.

box and the wise heads not going for too many medals. I have got no

:14:56.:15:01.

hair spray on, unlike Holly! But I did injure my finger.

:15:01.:15:09.

I feel like I am tight compared to everybody, I am right at the bottom

:15:09.:15:14.

of the list but I am playing it safe but I think there's a lot of

:15:14.:15:18.

athletes who can raise their Games. From all parts of the world. We

:15:18.:15:23.

must be realistic. I still give us three gold medals which is not bad.

:15:23.:15:27.

Only fools make predictions about something they cannot influence. We

:15:27.:15:31.

have been asked to do that! Like everybody else, we do not know, and

:15:31.:15:36.

we are hoping that we do very well. I think we will, I have gone for

:15:36.:15:41.

night like Colin, I think the 400 individual metres and the 4x400 are

:15:41.:15:44.

our best chances but the French came here with high hopes and they

:15:44.:15:48.

have had two people go out with false starts and all sorts of

:15:48.:15:52.

things can happen. I think 8, 9, 10 would be a good return. We will

:15:53.:15:57.

keep track of those predictions with great interest and told the

:15:57.:16:02.

guys to them. The men's 60m heat coming up. We have not failed to

:16:02.:16:12.
:16:12.:16:31.

brilliant run. Linford Christie is storming through. He takes the gold.

:16:31.:16:35.

He takes it from a standing start. It was an appalling start and he

:16:35.:16:45.
:16:45.:16:49.

still won. It is Livingston. It is very, very close. He is the

:16:49.:16:57.

European a number one. Jackson Quinonez got away very well indeed.

:16:57.:17:07.
:17:07.:17:08.

A brilliant run. Stumbled a bit at the moment. He is going well.

:17:08.:17:18.
:17:18.:17:20.

Through the middle. Jason Gardener is the European champion. Jason

:17:20.:17:30.
:17:30.:17:30.

Gardener got away well. He is the champion again. Absolutely superb.

:17:30.:17:37.

6.56. That was a terrific run. Chambers gets his very good start

:17:37.:17:47.
:17:47.:17:54.

as usual. He will win. He has got Dwain Chambers was very quick in

:17:54.:18:00.

2009. Let us hear from him. I know you have had so many successes

:18:00.:18:04.

indoors before. When it comes to the Championship like this, how

:18:04.:18:09.

much do you tap into those memories to inspire you? I have noticed it

:18:09.:18:14.

is getting harder and harder. Young men are getting faster and faster.

:18:14.:18:20.

I have started to realise I have got to rely on my experience. I

:18:20.:18:24.

still have the ability but experience pays a lot. I have to

:18:24.:18:29.

use it in the Championships. You are the man. Everybody is trying to

:18:29.:18:37.

beat you. You have the record that is answer past. It is a question of

:18:37.:18:44.

how long you can keep it going. Physically, I still have the

:18:44.:18:50.

ability to go out and perform. I try and remember -- I try and stay

:18:50.:18:54.

one step ahead of everybody. I still love what I do. That is the

:18:54.:18:59.

main thing. Whatever you do in life, do it with love and care. You can

:18:59.:19:05.

go as long as you want. If you look at Hollywood, Bruce Willis and so

:19:05.:19:10.

on, they are still making movies in their 60s. It shows, age is nothing

:19:10.:19:20.
:19:20.:19:24.

but a number. If you still enjoy what you do, anything is possible.

:19:24.:19:29.

After Birmingham, a bit surprised when he did not make the final. I

:19:29.:19:35.

am surprised to see him here. are talking about European indoors,

:19:35.:19:41.

if anyone can mix it up it is Dwane. He has a great track record. It is

:19:42.:19:46.

about how fit he is. If he is putting himself on the line, I

:19:46.:19:54.

expected to do well. He seems a more relaxed athlete after 2012. He

:19:54.:19:59.

has some sense of personal redemption. He has. He has got

:19:59.:20:03.

perspective as well. At the end of the day, he is doing something he

:20:03.:20:08.

enjoys. He thinks he can still perform at it. He would not be here

:20:08.:20:13.

if he did not think he could go out to perform. Dwain Chambers goes in

:20:13.:20:23.
:20:23.:20:35.

heat two. It is the two wise men in Harry Aikines-Aryeetey first. Only

:20:35.:20:45.
:20:45.:20:49.

three heats in this round. The first format will go through. --

:20:49.:20:52.

format. Although it for a map fastest losers will join them.

:20:52.:21:00.

There will be 16 in the final. -- the four fastest losers will join

:21:00.:21:10.
:21:10.:21:16.

them. This young man has been in great form. European junior

:21:16.:21:26.
:21:26.:21:27.

champion. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey has been through the World Junior

:21:27.:21:30.

Championships. Not quite able to convert all of that talent as a

:21:30.:21:39.

senior. He is the same age as Julian Reus. Harry needs to be

:21:39.:21:46.

careful. He is capable of finishing in the top four. Anything slightly

:21:46.:21:56.
:21:56.:22:05.

off, as happens in the 60m, you can be disappointed. To put it mildly.

:22:05.:22:15.
:22:15.:22:54.

This young man has been making all kinds of headlines at home. They

:22:54.:22:58.

are getting excited about his prospects. He twitched a bit in the

:22:58.:23:03.

blocks before he went away. Harry was not so quick. He ran a good

:23:03.:23:13.
:23:13.:23:13.

second half. The surprise, was the Romanian. It was quite an even race.

:23:13.:23:16.

You would expect that. No-one is outstanding this season. The German

:23:16.:23:22.

is very smooth and fluid. This is something we have to look out for,

:23:22.:23:32.
:23:32.:23:33.

the surprises. There is the German. He has done well. 6.56. As a

:23:33.:23:37.

sprinter, he has everything you want. He is not under stress,

:23:37.:23:41.

working his way to the line. He knows everyone is around him. He

:23:41.:23:45.

looks calm and comfortable. A good performance. Let us have a look at

:23:45.:23:51.

Harry out of the Brooks. -- the blocks. He can be aggressive. He

:23:51.:23:55.

suffers from injuries a lot. He cannot fulfil the potential he

:23:55.:24:04.

could expose him to. He has qualified here. Qualified nicely.

:24:04.:24:12.

There is a bit of a surprise. Catalin Cimpeanu. We have not

:24:12.:24:20.

really seen him race. A good win really seen him race. A good win

:24:20.:24:23.

for him. Paris safely through. -- Harry. How are you looking at the

:24:23.:24:32.

event? It is an opportunity for us to work on a few new things and try

:24:32.:24:37.

to implement them. I had a bit of a stumble. Lots of things to work on.

:24:37.:24:41.

It was a better run than I have been doing the majority of the

:24:41.:24:46.

season. I am lucky to be here. I will make the most of it. What

:24:46.:24:56.
:24:56.:24:56.

other trickiest things and the best things of changing coach? Hope and

:24:56.:25:01.

confidence. I beat Yohan Blake and look at where he is now. So a new

:25:01.:25:07.

coach is a new start. I want to go out there and say -- and do what I

:25:07.:25:12.

can do. Can I say hello to Dave Royal? Good to see you back. All

:25:12.:25:22.
:25:22.:25:25.

the best. Dwain Chambers is ready for the second heat. We have heard

:25:25.:25:31.

from him, we have seen him, we wonder how his back is. That did

:25:31.:25:38.

seem to be troubling him in Glasgow. He did not get through the heats.

:25:38.:25:46.

He is 34 years old. Still with a passion for it. He has got one or

:25:46.:25:53.

two new names. He needs to look out two new names. He needs to look out

:25:53.:26:03.
:26:03.:26:06.

for Jimmy Vicaut. The Romanian threw his hat into this -- into the

:26:06.:26:10.

ring. He thought that was his best of the year. Emmanuel Biron got

:26:10.:26:18.

fourth place. That was the automatic qualification spot. This

:26:18.:26:24.

is how they line up for the second. Jimmy Vicaut is a very promising

:26:24.:26:29.

French man. He has just turned 21. European junior champion a couple

:26:29.:26:39.
:26:39.:26:53.

trying to run through his injury but you saw in Glasgow, there was

:26:53.:26:59.

not the same spring in his step. was not the strong at Dwain

:26:59.:27:03.

Chambers we expect to see. He did attempt to raise but it was

:27:03.:27:09.

gingerly. He is here. -- to race. When he is on the track had a major

:27:09.:27:19.

Championship, he gives it his heart and soul. 6.58 this season. He did

:27:19.:27:25.

not get close to that in Birmingham. There is Jimmy Vicaut. He has been

:27:25.:27:30.

working with a dance teacher to working with a dance teacher to

:27:30.:27:38.

help him run with more relaxation. Any thoughts? Won the French indoor

:27:38.:27:44.

title recently. Very, very good French sprinters coming through.

:27:44.:27:54.
:27:54.:28:02.

Italy a strong as well. There is Jaysuma Saidy Ndure of Gambia. If

:28:02.:28:08.

Dwain Chambers is near his best, he is not at his best, but if he is at

:28:08.:28:14.

10% of it, he should have a chance here. He should go through all

:28:15.:28:20.

things being equal. It is a small field for this race. Four go

:28:20.:28:30.
:28:30.:28:38.

through from each heat plus the false start of. There is a done

:28:38.:28:45.

rose. -- Odain Rose. He is the Swedish champion. Jimmy Vicaut is

:28:45.:28:51.

the man who comes in on the hottest form. He does like to look at his

:28:51.:28:59.

watch before he sets into the blocks, Dwain Chambers. He is not

:28:59.:29:09.
:29:09.:29:37.

doing that today unless he has his best form. This is not going to

:29:37.:29:40.

be his Championship unless something dramatic happens. It is

:29:40.:29:45.

all laid out beside Jimmy Vicaut. He was very impressive. The-4 run

:29:45.:29:52.

by him. Absolutely wonderful. Flawless. -- a beautiful run. So

:29:52.:29:59.

relaxed at the end. The final time was 655. A lot more to come from

:29:59.:30:09.
:30:09.:30:12.

that young man. -- 6.55. A bit of a gap there. A tenth of a second. He

:30:12.:30:18.

is saying, this is what I have got. Here is Dwain Chambers. A less he

:30:18.:30:23.

explodes out of the blocks, you can know he is struggling. He has no

:30:23.:30:28.

good contact on the floor, there is no drive, he does not get into is a

:30:28.:30:36.

bright spring tide running. You can see by his head he is thinking,

:30:36.:30:40.

just pain. He is really suffering. He is an athlete who has not had

:30:40.:30:45.

many injuries. He is finding out how damaging it can be. A very,

:30:45.:30:52.

very frustrated figure, Dwain Chambers. He may well go through to

:30:52.:30:57.

the semi-finals which take place tomorrow. His time is 6.78. It is

:30:57.:31:02.

tomorrow. His time is 6.78. It is some way off his best. Dwain

:31:02.:31:12.
:31:12.:31:28.

Chambers, we will see if he gets he is frustrated. I sent a bit of

:31:28.:31:32.

anger. Phil Jones tried to get hold of him that he decided that it was

:31:32.:31:39.

not the time, throws his top down with real disgust. You can see the

:31:39.:31:43.

anger of Dwain Chambers there because we wondered what form he

:31:43.:31:47.

would be in in terms of his injury and he wandered as well and there's

:31:47.:31:54.

the answer. A very annoyed Dwain Chambers, he may be back as one of

:31:54.:32:01.

JONATHAN EDWARDS: Quite a strong reaction from Dwain Chambers. I am

:32:01.:32:06.

surprised to see that. Are you? Dwain Chambers does not like to

:32:06.:32:10.

perform like that, especially on the European stage but clearly he

:32:10.:32:15.

is not in shape. He looked very laboured out of the blocks. His

:32:15.:32:22.

contacts seem to be so long on the floor and that is not the person we

:32:22.:32:26.

know. He has had a back injury and sometimes that means the signals

:32:26.:32:29.

are not getting from your brain down to your muscles and it looked

:32:29.:32:33.

like he was struggling to get the turnover and cadence and an

:32:33.:32:38.

unbalanced way of running. Let's see if we can pick up anything from

:32:38.:32:48.
:32:48.:32:50.

No better here. You would expect him to be high in his feet but he

:32:50.:32:55.

was fighting every step of the way. Nothing majestic about that.

:32:55.:32:58.

Nothing that looked like this printing we have come to expect

:32:58.:33:03.

from him. It was hard work. -- from the sprinting. We also must

:33:03.:33:08.

remember that if you go back to Glasgow at the end of January, up

:33:08.:33:13.

in the Commonwealth Games arena, he was 6.58 out of the blocks first

:33:13.:33:17.

and looks great so something has happened and that is what I am

:33:17.:33:22.

surprised four, he has not a valid reason for not running well. He has,

:33:22.:33:26.

but if it is something like trapping in his back, that can come

:33:26.:33:31.

and go. As easily as the bed not being comfortable here. If it is

:33:31.:33:35.

just not firing as well as yesterday. It looks like he was

:33:35.:33:41.

hoping and knew the shape was there, but it looked like he was sinking

:33:41.:33:44.

on his left side. He has usually been very willing to give answers

:33:45.:33:49.

to why things have gone wrong and I am sure he will come back and speak

:33:49.:33:53.

to Phil Jones later but we will get a reaction from Dwain Chambers but

:33:53.:33:58.

we saw those pictures of him winning in 2009, running six but 42,

:33:58.:34:08.
:34:08.:34:10.

the second-fastest time of all time. -- running 6.42. He usually does

:34:10.:34:13.

communicate what is going on so clearly he is disappointed more

:34:13.:34:19.

than anything else. A quick word on the French athlete. He looked

:34:19.:34:23.

amazing. I think there's more to come but he is definitely favourite

:34:23.:34:28.

moving forward. Let's get back to the track and James Dasaolu goes

:34:28.:34:34.

first in this, equal top ranked Brit so far and back to the

:34:34.:34:44.
:34:44.:34:45.

earlier in the season and we have not seen him race since the UK

:34:45.:34:51.

trials and they argue whether or not he has been 100%, but he is

:34:51.:34:56.

certainly capable of doing well here. A decent season outdoors last

:34:56.:35:04.

year and somebody who has already shown that once you are running

:35:04.:35:08.

under 6.6 indoors, certainly at the moment, you will be in with a good

:35:08.:35:15.

shout. It will be close, we will say Michael Tumi alongside him, a

:35:15.:35:19.

bit of a revelation, breaking the Italian record on a couple of

:35:19.:35:29.
:35:29.:35:31.

the French athlete, was. James Dasaolu, has surely got a better

:35:31.:35:41.
:35:41.:35:59.

Michael Tumi. A very good Russian is currently in the fastest loser

:35:59.:36:03.

spot so if he does go through, he will have to find his number, and

:36:03.:36:07.

he shared, both of which he threw off and then be back for the semi-

:36:07.:36:12.

finals tomorrow hopefully. I am not sure that lots of people will run

:36:12.:36:16.

quicker than that here but we will see. Two people outside the top

:36:16.:36:26.
:36:26.:36:28.

Arena tonight. A better crowd than this morning although we expected

:36:28.:36:38.
:36:38.:36:39.

bigger crowds of the weekend as you would expect. Field event

:36:39.:36:49.
:36:49.:36:50.

the pole vault. James hopefully waiting for his chance to go

:36:50.:37:00.
:37:00.:37:03.

year, Michael Tierney, everybody thought he is in goods shape, and

:37:03.:37:10.

this plan has run a personal best down to 6.51 on three occasions.

:37:10.:37:18.

For now, this is where the focus is. Michael Tierney, I was watching a

:37:18.:37:23.

video of him winning in the Italian championships when he ran that 6.51,

:37:23.:37:27.

he has only run on two occasions this year but, but he really did

:37:27.:37:31.

explode out of the blocks and the middle part of the race really

:37:31.:37:36.

impressive. Let's see what he does. The Frenchman James is different,

:37:36.:37:42.

he has improved his start, but he is best at the end. He knows to get

:37:42.:37:46.

to the final and you will get your first view of Michael Tierney here.

:37:46.:37:56.
:37:56.:38:13.

He is in the blue of Italy. James pleased to see that when you have

:38:13.:38:17.

not raced for a while, you come into your heat and comment, you may

:38:17.:38:23.

pick up on the start. And how James Dasaolu, how he got out. A bit of a

:38:23.:38:29.

weird right arm from Michael Tumi, but James Dasaolu and looked very

:38:29.:38:36.

relaxed in the last 20 minutes. no stress at all from James. He

:38:36.:38:39.

drove through the first 20 metres and was looking at Michael Tierney

:38:39.:38:44.

from about 40 metres so that tells me that he feels good, he is in

:38:44.:38:48.

great shape and he is looking at his opponents and saying he is

:38:48.:38:56.

there with him. An excellent performance from James. Let's see

:38:56.:39:02.

exactly what happened. You have to drive this bit, react well and

:39:02.:39:06.

drive but he slyly stumbled a bit. Lost a bit of balance but he got

:39:06.:39:12.

back into his running -- slightly stumbled. I wish he would start

:39:12.:39:16.

doing that nice bounce down the track, it makes a huge difference

:39:16.:39:19.

to your sprinting. And what a great way of demonstrating that

:39:19.:39:24.

relaxation. Well done, James. news for him but not for Dwain

:39:24.:39:31.

Chambers because behind him, quite a few people went well. An

:39:31.:39:37.

impressive performers but at the bottom, but 6.74 and 6.76

:39:37.:39:40.

qualification means they go through as the fastest and Dwain Chambers

:39:40.:39:47.

does not go through. Two men through, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and

:39:47.:39:54.

James Dasaolu, there's qualification. Very impressive from

:39:54.:39:59.

James Dasaolu and Harry safely through as well. A real opportunity

:39:59.:40:06.

for James Dasaolu but he will have to be going... As quick as he has

:40:06.:40:16.
:40:16.:40:21.

ever been. No Dwain Chambers in the looked relaxed out there. I had a

:40:21.:40:25.

plan to make it to the qualifiers as easily as possible. I thought I

:40:25.:40:29.

would drive out and qualify so I was in a good position. I knew I

:40:29.:40:35.

did not have to push or try, just to try to conserve energy. You have

:40:36.:40:42.

not run that money raised is indoors but you have been putting

:40:42.:40:47.

the work in. My coach has belief in me, he knows I do not need to

:40:47.:40:54.

compete, compete, compete. He can even afford a look sideways, that

:40:54.:41:00.

is how comfortable new look. Yeah, when I looked round I was just

:41:00.:41:06.

checking my position. More to come? Or of course. I would like to think

:41:06.:41:16.
:41:16.:41:22.

so. Good luck. Cut to do double. -- the chairman of UK Athletics a

:41:22.:41:28.

moment ago. You can see Sebastian Coe there and his wife. Middle-

:41:29.:41:32.

distance runners, Sebastian Coe used to love running indoors with

:41:32.:41:42.
:41:42.:41:45.

when he won the European indoor title. He has got that many titles

:41:45.:41:50.

these days. Confirmation that Dwain Chambers did not make the semi-

:41:50.:41:55.

finals. The petulant reaction that we saw and I think what surprised

:41:55.:42:00.

us both about that was that he was always the figure that people love

:42:00.:42:10.
:42:10.:42:13.

After his suspension and coming back, he was looking like he wanted

:42:13.:42:17.

to please. I think it was important for him to feel that he was

:42:17.:42:21.

accepted by the public and his peers. And for him to be annoyed,

:42:22.:42:26.

you can understand that. Not speaking to Phil Jones and that is

:42:27.:42:31.

unusual because like I said before, he normally speaks when running has

:42:31.:42:39.

gone well. Even if it has not gone well, he has usually got a smile on

:42:39.:42:45.

his face. But there was frustration on his face which is unlike him.

:42:45.:42:49.

were taught about this sense of redemption that he got through 2012,

:42:49.:42:54.

he stood in the Olympic Stadium, he was allowed to compete first of all

:42:54.:42:58.

four Team GB and got a great cheer and performed relatively well. But

:42:58.:43:04.

it was almost like that he has got the freedom to be angry and he can

:43:04.:43:08.

be annoyed if it doesn't go well. He is an athlete and at the end of

:43:08.:43:13.

the day, these things hurt. These things kick in. He is free to be

:43:13.:43:17.

himself and he is expressing what any athlete would do if they are

:43:17.:43:20.

coming to the championships and not performing well. He knew he did not

:43:21.:43:25.

do enough and it would be wrong to be smiling, that is not be Dwain I

:43:25.:43:31.

know anyway. By a very bright future at the end of the career of

:43:31.:43:35.

the next person though, Holly Bleasdale is getting ready pull the

:43:35.:43:40.

women's pole vault as the qualification, she should do this

:43:40.:43:48.

comfortably. But hear her thought. -- let hear. I have had a great

:43:48.:43:52.

indoor season and I am feeling confident, training has been going

:43:52.:43:56.

so well and I think I am in the best place I could be with

:43:56.:44:00.

confidence. I am hopefully able to add to what I have achieved on

:44:00.:44:07.

nastier and happily get a medal. Was it the indoor season last year

:44:07.:44:11.

and the height of things you were able to achieve that catapulted you

:44:11.:44:17.

to greater things at doors and also sent your confidence soaring.

:44:17.:44:24.

that was a great big break through and struggling a bit outdoors, I

:44:24.:44:27.

hit some competition with bad weather conditions but this year I

:44:27.:44:31.

have come back out and buy have jumped more consistency than ever

:44:31.:44:35.

and I feel so much more confident than I ever have done in a season.

:44:35.:44:40.

I feel like I him in the best place I can be. With the change of

:44:40.:44:44.

coaching strategies, that has helped me mentally and more

:44:45.:44:51.

confidence. Dan said he could name 14 things I could change right now

:44:51.:44:56.

and it was really daunting having all those things to changed and I

:44:56.:45:02.

have changed some of those. I have made my run-up so it is more

:45:02.:45:12.
:45:12.:45:13.

controlled. If I would have carried a pole, and like in the Olympics, I

:45:13.:45:18.

can do so much better, I can cope with different conditions. There

:45:18.:45:25.

are not many times when you get good conditions. Aside from all the

:45:25.:45:31.

pressures of the sport, you have got things to look forward to.

:45:31.:45:34.

would with some friends in Cardiff and I have been so nervous for

:45:34.:45:38.

these competitions because lot of pressure to come and win a medal,

:45:38.:45:43.

particularly being the favourite and there is lots of pressure but

:45:43.:45:50.

going in and trying wedding dresses, it has really chilled me out and I

:45:50.:46:00.

I guess she wants to enjoy herself and she wants to win. I would say

:46:00.:46:05.

so! She has learned a lot from last year. The height of expectation

:46:05.:46:09.

going into London and then not quite hitting what I am sure she

:46:09.:46:14.

would have hoped for herself, no medal and she must now realise that

:46:14.:46:19.

big hides are not just the game, it is about converting those into

:46:19.:46:23.

medals. She has a great opportunity to do that. The coverage we saw of

:46:23.:46:29.

her when she jumped her four metres and 87 centimetres, it was a

:46:29.:46:39.
:46:39.:46:47.

It is about finding consistency. She talked about her run-up. A

:46:47.:46:52.

larger pole. She feels more comfortable. When she improves the

:46:52.:46:57.

run up, she can hit the heights. She is capable of hitting the 4.80

:46:57.:47:03.

mark again. Column, she will be one of your predictions for a gold.

:47:03.:47:10.

People will be waiting for her to deliver. What Holly Bleasdale is

:47:10.:47:16.

happy about doing is doing what she has to do to get consistent. She

:47:16.:47:19.

has not been involved in the excitement about herself. In

:47:20.:47:26.

interviews, she is quite straight. She says, this is what I am doing,

:47:26.:47:32.

give me time and I will deliver big performances. I have no doubt.

:47:32.:47:36.

There will be a time when she will be hitting marks consistently. When

:47:36.:47:42.

you do that, that is when we will start seeing her get big medals.

:47:42.:47:46.

her last competition, it was in Stockholm, she jumped, 4.45. She

:47:46.:47:53.

was disappointed and a confidence took a knock. This is section two.

:47:53.:48:00.

Lots of good action, not least in the women's 400m. Perri Shakes-

:48:00.:48:03.

Drayton is in great form. She Drayton is in great form. She

:48:03.:48:08.

looked superb. She really did. She has all this indoor season. Every

:48:08.:48:16.

time we see her, she has been demanding, executed her race really

:48:16.:48:22.

well. We know how important it is to get to that 200m mark first. She

:48:22.:48:28.

is in the outside lane, she went off like a train. She was

:48:28.:48:34.

commanding. She did a great job. The most important thing is, when

:48:34.:48:39.

you are in that type of form, it is to not make any trivial mistakes.

:48:39.:48:46.

You have to keep yourself focused. We know she can go in at 52 seconds.

:48:46.:48:56.
:48:56.:49:00.

So Mike -- so why not run it like that? You have got to do it.

:49:00.:49:05.

was comfortably the fastest qualifier. In the interview with

:49:05.:49:08.

Phil, she said she did not expect Phil, she said she did not expect

:49:08.:49:18.
:49:18.:49:22.

to run that fast. That bodes well. Again, she looks good. When it

:49:22.:49:25.

Eilidh Child was under pressure, she had this beautiful way of

:49:25.:49:30.

exhilarating, just to take herself clear. They showed someone who was

:49:30.:49:38.

full of confidence who knows what they can achieve. Her time was 5205.

:49:38.:49:44.

-- 52.05. It was a great performance. She was the one who

:49:44.:49:48.

did not win, unfortunately. She had a pretty solid race. She has not

:49:49.:49:54.

got the same speed in her legs. She has raced but not too much. She

:49:54.:49:59.

needs this confidence, she needs a run. She was comfortably through.

:49:59.:50:07.

It doesn't bode well, especially when we look ahead. There really is

:50:07.:50:16.

a gold medal banker. The men's 400m happened this morning. There is

:50:16.:50:26.
:50:26.:50:29.

works on the back straight to make sure he goes into the second corner.

:50:29.:50:33.

You can see what is happening, he knows he is going on the outside.

:50:33.:50:38.

There is some acceleration to take him to the head of the pact and

:50:38.:50:43.

then he can just relax and control the race. All the British runners

:50:43.:50:50.

have a clear plan, go out fast. it worked. It was a great tactic.

:50:50.:50:55.

It is a tactic they will have to adopt when we move into the semi-

:50:55.:51:00.

finals. It was great to see Richard running well. He has been at this a

:51:00.:51:04.

long time. They would be nice to see him progress through to the

:51:04.:51:08.

final. A great run from him. Richard Strachan made it through.

:51:08.:51:15.

From a British point of view, our best chance is Nigel Levine. He

:51:15.:51:20.

beat Richard Strachan. We can see the closing stages of his race.

:51:20.:51:25.

competent performer. We expect the man in front of him to be the

:51:25.:51:30.

leader. He has had a great rise in this indoor season. He has run 45

:51:30.:51:37.

seconds outdoors. Nigel Levine would know what was going on. What

:51:37.:51:41.

I loved was he tested his opponent. Coming off the final bend, he put

:51:41.:51:46.

his foot down to see if he would respond. He did respond. He was

:51:46.:51:52.

like, OK, I know what you have left in a tank. He could sense Nigel

:51:52.:51:59.

Levine and the kept him back. would not let him past. Today, not

:51:59.:52:03.

tomorrow -- not so they, not tomorrow. It will be an exciting

:52:03.:52:07.

race. There are three athletes in this. All three got through.

:52:07.:52:13.

Michael Bingham. He took it out strong. One of the contenders, the

:52:13.:52:22.

Russian looked good. The Russian is strong. Indoors, we are not so sure

:52:23.:52:31.

of him. People bought -- performed really well. He went comfortably

:52:31.:52:41.

under 47 seconds. He has got a bit left in the tank. All six of our

:52:41.:52:46.

men and women through to the semi- finals tomorrow. Good news for the

:52:46.:52:51.

woman was a long jump. High hopes with Shara Proctor. She got bronze

:52:51.:52:57.

last year. Disappointed in London. She did not make automatic

:52:57.:53:04.

qualification. She did not. She qualified well enough. It is tough

:53:04.:53:08.

for the girls to come out and made sure their accuracy on the wrong

:53:08.:53:12.

way is there. She was beautiful on the board, running well. Qualified

:53:13.:53:18.

with 6.61. Safely through. It only to cut one jump. She was assessed

:53:18.:53:24.

in the competition, making it sure she could respond. -- it only took

:53:24.:53:32.

one a jumper. Post London, she have the point to prove. That is why she

:53:32.:53:35.

is here. She has made that clear. She was disappointed in the

:53:36.:53:42.

Olympics. She will be competitive. It will be one of the athletes I

:53:42.:53:48.

expect to find in the line-up. Jenny Meadows is in the 800m. She

:53:48.:53:52.

is the champion. She finished in is the champion. She finished in

:53:53.:53:55.

silver-medal position at three years ago. She was upgraded after

:53:55.:54:00.

the doping violation. She is team captain. It is great to see you

:54:01.:54:10.
:54:11.:54:11.

because when we spoke in Birmingham you ran well. What was the

:54:11.:54:17.

discussion? When I crossed the line, I felt really tired and I thought,

:54:17.:54:22.

I do not want to do that again soon. I thought, it is probably what they

:54:22.:54:27.

need to do. It is a different training. You have to be quite

:54:27.:54:31.

race-fit. We decided we did not want to leave it three months until

:54:31.:54:35.

the start of the outdoor season. It would only be a couple of weeks

:54:35.:54:39.

into the Championship. Thrown in the deep end. It shows the kind of

:54:39.:54:46.

esteem you are held in, you have been made the captain as well. It

:54:46.:54:50.

is a fantastic honour. When Peter asked me, I accepted straight away.

:54:50.:54:55.

To a weeks ago, I would not have thought I would be in the

:54:55.:55:02.

Championship and a captain. -- two weeks. What about champion? I have

:55:02.:55:05.

never gone in as defending champion before. I am not sure realistically

:55:06.:55:14.

what my chances are. Certainly, I take it very seriously. I will not

:55:14.:55:20.

let the title slip easily. For you, this Championship, hive would you

:55:20.:55:28.

put it into perspective? What success -- what would success

:55:28.:55:38.
:55:38.:55:40.

before you? The coach would say it is to practise your mental skills.

:55:40.:55:45.

It is all the build up, you get a lot of nerves, the warm-up area can

:55:46.:55:49.

be daunting. To go through the whole routine is really important

:55:49.:55:55.

for me. That is ticking a box of the summer. I am a competitor. It

:55:55.:56:02.

will be trying my best, trying to defend my title. A lot of people

:56:02.:56:07.

would not expected. By Emily ranked 7th or 8th going into the race. But

:56:07.:56:12.

I would be disappointed if I am not I would be disappointed if I am not

:56:12.:56:15.

on the podium. -- I am only ranked. Her coach will be watching with

:56:15.:56:24.

eagle eyes. We can see Jenny getting ready.

:56:25.:56:31.

What we your final words? Just to enjoy herself. We struggled in

:56:31.:56:39.

Birmingham. She was a bit race rusty. She asked a practice that so

:56:39.:56:43.

when she is 100% fit and summer, she is ready to go. Was this some

:56:44.:56:48.

debate in Birmingham as to whether she would come here? Not really. We

:56:48.:56:51.

thought about it and analyse the race and thought the weakest part

:56:51.:56:56.

of the day was what was going on in her head. So we thought we would

:56:56.:57:05.

put that right. She got a gold medal in Paris after the Russian

:57:05.:57:10.

was disqualified a couple of years ago. She got there was -- she was

:57:10.:57:15.

devastated she came second that day, though. What did you think? It is

:57:15.:57:19.

difficult. If you dwell on it too much, you get frustrated. You have

:57:19.:57:24.

got to go in with the mine said, if I am doing the best they can do,

:57:24.:57:28.

you cannot complain about what other people do on the day. -- mind

:57:28.:57:33.

set. You hope people doing their job behind the scenes are doing

:57:33.:57:38.

their job. Was there anything that made you change the way you

:57:38.:57:42.

approach things in light of that result? We looked at a few things

:57:43.:57:48.

and tweaked a few things and she missed the final later that summer

:57:48.:57:58.
:57:58.:58:00.

in day do up by a fraction. We went back to the drawing board. You

:58:00.:58:04.

could argue that was the reason for the injury but we will never know.

:58:04.:58:09.

It is one of those things. We may be did not need to change things.

:58:09.:58:15.

The Russians were doping. What are you hoping for this week? She had

:58:15.:58:20.

had a long road back after last year. Just that she is enjoying the

:58:20.:58:25.

races and getting used to the whole build-up of the day and the media

:58:25.:58:30.

attention and things like that. Knowing her, she will be eyeing a

:58:30.:58:34.

medal. She definitely had a twinkle in her eye when she was talking

:58:35.:58:40.

about, it is great to be here, but the Bodiam -- the podium is what

:58:40.:58:44.

she wants. Three years ago, we would be looking at the field and

:58:44.:58:50.

saying, let us take it on and dominated. But she is a bit race

:58:50.:58:55.

rusty and she has not done all the training we would have liked to

:58:55.:59:05.
:59:05.:59:12.

have done. Whatever happens is a where the hard work is done. It has

:59:12.:59:17.

been a hard slog for Jenny to get back. We are delighted to see her

:59:17.:59:21.

back. She is one of the most popular athlete the team. It is

:59:21.:59:25.

great she is the team captain. As the code was saying, if she had

:59:25.:59:30.

looked at the field two years ago, only 16 athletes in it, only thing

:59:30.:59:35.

that will be eliminated in this round, the three fastest from the

:59:35.:59:45.
:59:45.:00:10.

She knows how to bring -- to win big races. Jenny is happy she has

:00:10.:00:15.

got three races. She can be steady across three. Do not be surprised

:00:15.:00:25.

as we see her making sure the pace does not slip. Great to see her

:00:25.:00:30.

back. I have expectations and hopes. I hope she can come back and take

:00:30.:00:38.

the middle. I think she is capable but they are not 100% prepared. One

:00:38.:00:43.

thing that is not lacking is a fight. She will go out and attack

:00:43.:00:48.

like she is doing now. It is hard being in the first heat because you

:00:48.:00:51.

do not know the time to shoot for. She is controlling everything.

:00:51.:00:57.

Elena Kotulskaia goes into the lead. Bit of a stumble there. She is in

:00:57.:01:04.

control. She is happy. Happy to be racing. When you have time out from

:01:04.:01:13.

injury, that can give you an extra boost to full stop she is doing

:01:14.:01:23.
:01:24.:01:24.

everything right. Now she is wanted to move wide. She is using her

:01:24.:01:34.
:01:34.:01:35.

experience. Wide down the back straight. Top three to go through.

:01:35.:01:40.

Nataliya Lupu own is there. Jenny has just got to keep working. The

:01:40.:01:45.

lack of training by come into play here. You cannot switch through the

:01:45.:01:48.

gears in the same way. That determination that she has always

:01:48.:01:55.

had is still there. Elena Kotulskaia is first, Jenny is

:01:55.:02:05.
:02:05.:02:16.

safely through in third. A few more are training, a long time out with

:02:16.:02:20.

injury and the fitness coming back but it is the race fitness which

:02:20.:02:24.

takes a little longer to arrive. absolutely, blowing the cobwebs

:02:24.:02:27.

away and you see and she is coming down the home straight, she has not

:02:28.:02:34.

got the change of pace that she normally has when she is 100% ready.

:02:34.:02:39.

But she made it and fought hard and I think she will come back stronger

:02:39.:02:49.
:02:49.:02:58.

with other athletes becoming married and now called Elena

:02:58.:03:02.

Kotulskaia. Jenny held the position behind the Russian. She would have

:03:02.:03:06.

been able to raise the pace there and go through as Nataliia Lupu

:03:07.:03:13.

went by her. She is reaching for it to her but she is not liking as

:03:13.:03:20.

much so it she is coming away and claims that third spot. I can say

:03:20.:03:24.

that journey is just about approaching Phil Jones so she will

:03:24.:03:34.
:03:34.:03:34.

be able to speak to him about how How did that go from your

:03:34.:03:43.

perspective? Pretty good, 16 goals in the championship and three of

:03:43.:03:48.

them have run under the certain target. I always feel quite strange

:03:48.:03:52.

in the heats when you are not quite running at your fastest pace so I

:03:52.:03:55.

tried to make sure I was in the top three the whole time and I think I

:03:55.:04:01.

am better with a faster pace so I really look forward to the

:04:01.:04:05.

increased pace. It is about getting back in the ring and getting rid of

:04:05.:04:11.

the rustiness. Exactly, I have been training on my own and you have no

:04:11.:04:16.

one ever on the track coming to barge you. You have to learn how to

:04:16.:04:20.

respond and people to bump and barge, that is the 800m,

:04:20.:04:26.

particularly indoors so I learnt a few things there, trying this time

:04:26.:04:29.

in the next round, hopefully that will wake me up ready for the next

:04:29.:04:33.

round. Do you feel there is anything missing that you will not

:04:33.:04:40.

be able to work on in such a short space of time? Yeah, hoping none of

:04:40.:04:44.

the opponents are listening to this! Better if there is a fast

:04:44.:04:49.

pace so if I do not go off in the first 200m with the fast pace, I

:04:49.:04:53.

lose the best bit of May. So that his discussions about how the next

:04:53.:04:58.

race goes, who I draw, had to play it. It might have been better to

:04:58.:05:06.

make sure it was a fast race, it may play into my hands better. I

:05:06.:05:13.

need to work out who I will get in the next round. Thanks for talking

:05:13.:05:21.

to us. It is a pleasure, fell. -- pleasure, Phil. No places to hide

:05:21.:05:25.

in the championships. Not at all, not at this level and when you have

:05:25.:05:32.

been so far away from competing and as Jenny always gives an honest

:05:32.:05:37.

account. It is knowing when to kick, do you trust you can maintain that

:05:37.:05:40.

form when the other girls are still accelerating? She will have learnt

:05:40.:05:44.

a lot from that race and she will go and analyse, like she said, what

:05:45.:05:48.

to do next and that is important to get back into the flow and it was

:05:48.:05:53.

good to see her out there. A good start for Jenny so we will see her

:05:53.:05:57.

tomorrow. And a few legs cobwebs but let's get back out now to the

:05:57.:06:02.

second heat with Andrew Cotter. Second of three heats, a reminder

:06:02.:06:05.

it is three automatically in and any three fastest losers through to

:06:05.:06:15.
:06:15.:06:27.

like there was with Elena Kotulskaia. Marta Milani comes

:06:27.:06:37.
:06:37.:06:37.

through from Italy. Ciara Everard settling in nicely. It is a limited

:06:37.:06:40.

field and the three fastest losers going through but they know the

:06:40.:06:50.
:06:50.:06:51.

time they have to target. And the pace they have to set. And the

:06:51.:07:01.

Belorussian athlete is setting the pace, this place is a bit weaker

:07:01.:07:04.

than the last heat. You want to ensure that they have a chance of

:07:04.:07:11.

going through as the fastest loser. 2.03 was the fastest in the first

:07:11.:07:14.

hit and that is what they are aiming to do, aiming to go through

:07:14.:07:20.

in a bit quicker than that but they went through that in 63. There's

:07:20.:07:30.
:07:30.:07:30.

the Irish champion, Kieran Everard -- Ciara Everard. The Czech for the

:07:31.:07:37.

bit in the Champion there as well and Ciara Everard deciding to ease

:07:37.:07:45.

her way around her opponent. She is the Irish Universities indoor

:07:45.:07:55.

champion and that has improved her personal best to under 2.02. And

:07:55.:08:01.

stretching away and opening a gap. Yes, and opening the gap between

:08:01.:08:08.

her and Lenka Masna. She is showing some real form and class here, Kira

:08:08.:08:12.

Everard and she will win this one comfortably, a battle behind her

:08:12.:08:19.

for the automatic qualification between Lenka Masna and Marta

:08:19.:08:29.

Milani. A great race from Ciara Everard. This is well within her

:08:29.:08:35.

capabilities. She had plenty here. Looking very, very impressive, she

:08:35.:08:42.

is still coming away down the home straight. Marina Arzamasova

:08:42.:08:47.

fighting back but we were talking before about giving youngsters the

:08:47.:08:57.
:08:57.:08:59.

chance to build and gain experiences and it to gain the

:08:59.:09:03.

conference. Ciara Everard looking impressive there, timing it well

:09:03.:09:10.

and she knew she was probably the class athlete and she made it tell.

:09:10.:09:13.

She was sensing that as Marina Arzamasova was putting the pace

:09:13.:09:20.

slowed a bit, she moved smoothly past and continued to go away. She

:09:20.:09:24.

is in control and winding up the pace, Lenka Masna tried to get back.

:09:24.:09:31.

A bit more to come in the next round by the looks of it. She was

:09:31.:09:37.

looking strong here. Perhaps testing herself a bit, 29.5 in the

:09:37.:09:41.

last lap which was very impressive and just see what she had in the

:09:41.:09:47.

tank. Not a very quick time overall but it was a quick last lap so she

:09:47.:09:55.

has made their way none too wearily A big smile on her face and

:09:55.:10:02.

deservedly so. It was good. I kicked out at 200m and I felt

:10:02.:10:07.

pretty strong. I had it all the way to the finish line, so it is about

:10:07.:10:11.

focusing on the semi-final. It has been a great day for Ireland, we

:10:11.:10:15.

were talking to your colleagues, a small tin that a great deal of

:10:15.:10:18.

camaraderie and real potential for success. Definitely. One of the

:10:18.:10:23.

strongest teams we have ever had coming to these championships. It

:10:23.:10:29.

raises the atmosphere among the camp. It is great to have the

:10:29.:10:33.

senior people and the juniors as well. It is really good. What are

:10:33.:10:39.

your own expectations as you move forward? My plan is to take it

:10:39.:10:43.

round by round, this is my first major championships. I want to get

:10:43.:10:46.

back and recover and see how the semi-finals go back. An impressive

:10:46.:10:54.

Earlier on during the lunchtime Earlier on during the lunchtime

:10:54.:10:58.

break we had the pentathlon it shot put taken place. This was the first

:10:58.:11:04.

of five disciplines today the young it 18-year-old Belgian who already

:11:04.:11:09.

holds the world junior indoor record. She threw 13.88 but the

:11:09.:11:16.

longest one of the day comb from the defending pentathlon champion.

:11:16.:11:21.

Well over 50m, the longest shot put we had seen and put her up from

:11:21.:11:30.

sixth into second place. But the lead still being held by Yana

:11:30.:11:40.
:11:40.:11:46.

Maksimava. She threw 14.65 to keep the women's 800m. This could be a

:11:46.:11:53.

young star of the picture, this is Anta Hinriksdottir, she only turned

:11:53.:11:58.

19 last month, 4th in the world juniors, the silver medal race

:11:58.:12:03.

leader in that but she really did attack that race. And I think she

:12:03.:12:10.

will be a star of the future. She has just run just as quick as she

:12:10.:12:20.
:12:20.:12:24.

did last year, and just 17 years of first heat, Elena Kotulskaia coming

:12:24.:12:30.

through there and looking pretty impressive. Kira Everard winning

:12:30.:12:37.

the second heat. And Marta Milani disqualified for Italy, we do not

:12:37.:12:42.

know why she was disqualified. means that all six women could go

:12:42.:12:52.
:12:52.:13:12.

times areas champion. A great new indoor facility in Ireland. Many of

:13:12.:13:22.
:13:22.:13:25.

the athletes have run close to Albanian athlete, she is having a

:13:25.:13:29.

cracking season as well. She is reasonably experienced, whether she

:13:29.:13:33.

had begun, luckily or not the starter has brought them back. --

:13:33.:13:37.

whether she heard the gun. I am not sure it was the starter's fall,

:13:37.:13:43.

everybody else started fine. You do not often see a false start in the

:13:43.:13:47.

800m. Not very often at all! I am not sure any of them know what

:13:47.:13:52.

happened. Some of them found their way round the first bend before the

:13:52.:13:57.

recall. The starter has got his arm up to say everything was clear, she

:13:57.:14:04.

just did not hear them and for whatever reason, they have been

:14:04.:14:12.

recalled, luckily for her. She will receive... She will not be

:14:12.:14:19.

disqualified, I will be amazed if she is. What is the problem now?

:14:19.:14:25.

They are worried about her number for some reason. Oh, she folded it

:14:25.:14:31.

over with the sponsor. It's as Gothenburg and that, it is just so

:14:31.:14:35.

everybody knows where we are. She either did not here or did not know

:14:35.:14:42.

whether there with the starter's gun. Paula Habovstiakova then

:14:42.:14:49.

paused and then meet marksmen decided they would bring them back.

:14:49.:14:53.

Shall we have a crop top conversation?! If they would like

:14:53.:14:58.

to make the babes at have something softer that does not rub the things

:14:58.:15:03.

out of your abdomen, I am not sure it is so important out of the plot,

:15:03.:15:07.

but she did does seem to have it folded under her she did it as she

:15:07.:15:12.

was walking back for the restart. Indignation in the cross-country

:15:12.:15:14.

world in the Sunderland International's, some women wearing

:15:14.:15:22.

crop tops. It was in Newcastle, what can you expect? To has done it

:15:22.:15:28.

again! I cannot believe that. The reason, you do not see too many

:15:28.:15:32.

Albanian athletes, she runs on the circuit, running well this year,

:15:32.:15:41.

she has then to us -- then had to storm through and she is lucky to

:15:41.:15:46.

get through. We see a youngster at the front who loves to get out

:15:46.:15:51.

there with a slightly odd action. But she has stormed through the

:15:51.:15:58.

first 200m, 28.79. A fast start and Luiza Gega getting herself into the

:15:58.:16:03.

race. Yes, but impressive that Anta Hinriksdottir is just going for it.

:16:03.:16:09.

She has got a slightly lower lean and an effective stance in moving

:16:09.:16:13.

away. She is relishing being on the stage and having this opportunity

:16:13.:16:21.

and she is turning this into two races. A bit of inexperience on the

:16:21.:16:25.

17-year-old, she does not need to go this fast. She likes to front

:16:25.:16:29.

run, she did it in the world junior championships and as Paula was

:16:29.:16:33.

saying, she has got that action and I am sure she will get more upright

:16:33.:16:39.

and stronger, a great, long, languid stride on her. And now

:16:39.:16:47.

Luiza Gega is struggling to get involved now. They are taking much

:16:47.:16:57.
:16:57.:17:15.

going past. Then followed by the Ukrainian, who is the second round.

:17:15.:17:22.

She is taking -- trying to take control of the race. Rose-Anne

:17:22.:17:29.

Galligan wins. The refrain in second place. A very tired

:17:29.:17:35.

youngster in third place. It is inexperience. She has loads of

:17:35.:17:41.

ability and talent. Galligan has the experience. There is the start.

:17:41.:17:48.

If you have done it once, you should be forewarned. She had to

:17:48.:17:53.

work so hard to get back involved. By the final stage, she is really

:17:53.:17:57.

tired. The more tired, the more the forward lean comes into play. She

:17:58.:18:01.

has done enough. She cannot run like that against the senior

:18:01.:18:05.

athletes when she gets into the semi-finals. She will have to hope

:18:05.:18:10.

she gets pulled round and runs with a bit more common sense. She went

:18:10.:18:17.

very fast through the first 200 metres. Gallacher looked good. --

:18:17.:18:27.
:18:27.:18:37.

Have you ever seen that? The first time that you could maybe excuse

:18:37.:18:45.

someone from a -- or not hearing it. But not twice. The second time,

:18:45.:18:51.

they cannot start the race again. She is looking at them have run

:18:51.:18:56.

away from her and then she is on the back foot. She is working

:18:56.:19:00.

really hard. She has the stress of knowing it is her error that has

:19:00.:19:07.

put her in a position. No problems for Rose-Anne Galligan. Ireland are

:19:07.:19:13.

having a good day. She is full of smiles.

:19:13.:19:15.

smiles. Another excellent performance. It

:19:16.:19:23.

must be catching. Seeing my team- mates compete well, I wanted to as

:19:23.:19:28.

well. A rather bizarre start with the Albanian athlete not hearing

:19:28.:19:34.

begun? What did you see? I got a fright. I thought I had done

:19:34.:19:39.

something. I think it was her numb but that she was not showing. I do

:19:39.:19:43.

not know what was going on. -- her number. You took care of business.

:19:43.:19:48.

What are you hoping to do from here on in? The first thing is to make

:19:48.:19:57.

the semi-finals. It is my first time. I will speak to my coach and

:19:57.:20:02.

see what the plan is for tomorrow. see what the plan is for tomorrow.

:20:02.:20:12.
:20:12.:20:25.

fastest qualifiers, it did not take much to get through. Luiza Gega has

:20:25.:20:35.
:20:35.:20:38.

been disqualified. We hope Jenny Meadows will go well. That is a

:20:38.:20:46.

wide-open race. Gear Everard was very impressive. Two Irish women

:20:46.:20:51.

are through. -- a Ciara Everard. Jenny Meadows will not be too far

:20:51.:20:57.

away if she can find her old form. Still to come: We have got the

:20:57.:21:03.

heats of the men's 800m. Michael Rimmer is going well this season.

:21:03.:21:09.

He will be in with a church -- with a chance. Mukhtar Mohammed is

:21:09.:21:15.

ranked number two. They ran well in Birmingham. Do not forget Joe

:21:15.:21:25.
:21:25.:21:28.

Thomas. He makes up our trio in the men's 800m. Then the triple jump

:21:28.:21:35.

champion, Emile Aldama will be looking to qualify. We also have

:21:35.:21:45.
:21:45.:21:51.

Robbie Grabarz as well. Robbie Grabarz finishes the first attempt.

:21:51.:21:58.

Very, very good indeed. It is a bronze for Britain and bronze for

:21:58.:22:08.
:22:08.:22:12.

How much has the success kept you inspired? The success breeds

:22:12.:22:19.

success? A looking at last season, it would be easy to drop my

:22:19.:22:24.

personal best and say I was happy. But it is enjoyable. When it is

:22:24.:22:29.

going right, it is even more fun. You want more and more of that. It

:22:29.:22:37.

is what you do it for. That keeps you motivated. How would you assess

:22:37.:22:44.

how the indoor season is going for you? Quite well. I missed a bar but

:22:44.:22:50.

I wanted. But I have trained really hard and the things I have done

:22:50.:22:54.

have created positive problems. A bit faster, but more powerful and

:22:54.:22:59.

they are hard things to deal with we were used to jumping a certain

:22:59.:23:04.

way. It is putting a lid on it and controlling it. I have prepared

:23:04.:23:12.

well for this. That is interesting. You are fired up for the winter

:23:12.:23:17.

season, it is hard to incorporate into technique. Be it is. He will

:23:17.:23:21.

have to make adjustments with his run-up. His take-off position as

:23:22.:23:26.

well. They are positive problems because he is looking at jumping

:23:26.:23:33.

2.40. That is where he is heading. He is a fantastic athlete. He is

:23:33.:23:37.

rising through the ranks and featuring at European Championships.

:23:37.:23:42.

I cannot wait to see him jump. He will probably... There has not been

:23:42.:23:52.
:23:52.:23:53.

a victory for Britain since 1984. - - 1994. How high did he jump? It

:23:53.:24:01.

was 2.37. That is five. -- high. We will see Robbie Grabarz later.

:24:01.:24:06.

Holly Bleasdale is coming in at 4.46. Now we will concentrate on

:24:06.:24:16.
:24:16.:24:29.

the hurdles. This is the men's Lagarde Martinot is perhaps the man

:24:29.:24:39.
:24:39.:25:08.

final. He just squeeze through. A loud roar from the crowd of Philip

:25:08.:25:18.
:25:18.:25:18.

Nossmy. We were talking about him being soft out of the blocks. He

:25:18.:25:28.
:25:28.:25:30.

does get going. He has done 7.53 this year. This was a personal best

:25:30.:25:40.
:25:40.:25:45.

for Paolo Dal Molin. He is the Portuguese record holder indoors.

:25:45.:25:55.
:25:55.:25:57.

He lowered it to 7.68. He is very strong. Perhaps not quite at Sergei

:25:57.:26:07.
:26:07.:26:15.

Shubenkov's level. But strong in his heat. A Greek record holder.

:26:15.:26:23.

Spain came through in 7.75 in the heats. It will be interesting to

:26:24.:26:33.
:26:34.:26:57.

see who Pascal Lagarde Martinot the final. It takes place later

:26:57.:27:07.
:27:07.:27:44.

him. He is slow out of the blocks, Pascal Lagarde Martinot. You cannot

:27:44.:27:49.

at any stage be resting in your blocks. You have got to be shot out

:27:49.:27:53.

of them and put pressure on your opponent and dictate the race.

:27:53.:27:58.

Paolo Dal Molin from Italy. They are excited about this man. He set

:27:58.:28:03.

a personal best in the eaves. He has gone a bit quicker here. Good,

:28:03.:28:06.

strong performance from him. A couple of mistakes earlier on but

:28:06.:28:15.

he managed to take the victory in 7.58. Konstantin Shabanov got third

:28:15.:28:25.
:28:25.:28:26.

place. Greece take fourth place. Paolo Dal Molin was being hunted

:28:26.:28:30.

down by a Pascal Lagarde Martinot. Look at the start. You have got to

:28:30.:28:40.
:28:40.:28:43.

be aggressive. Paolo Dal Molin shows that. But his trail leg is

:28:43.:28:48.

terrible. He will be a real threat in world hurdling if he can control

:28:48.:28:52.

that. We will get word to him as soon as we can. Paolo Dal Molin

:28:52.:29:02.

winning that one. Pascal Lagarde Martinot will want a sharper start

:29:02.:29:12.
:29:12.:29:15.

in the final. People believe he can take this one.

:29:15.:29:20.

Holly Bleasdale getting ready to take her first vault in his

:29:20.:29:25.

qualifying competition for the final tomorrow. Nobody has cleared

:29:25.:29:31.

this height of 4.36 so far. 10 athletes have tried. It will give

:29:31.:29:35.

us a clear indication as to what sort of shape Holly Bleasdale is in.

:29:36.:29:40.

She is wearing the blue number as the leader in terms of the height

:29:40.:29:50.
:29:50.:30:00.

have to go again. We were indicating earlier on her last

:30:00.:30:04.

appearance in Sweden was just a couple of weeks ago when she

:30:04.:30:11.

cleared 4.40. She has cleared over 4.70 this year. Two more attempts

:30:11.:30:15.

to stay in the competition and they will be important for Holly

:30:15.:30:25.
:30:25.:30:38.

has had one attempt in the competition at the moment, this is

:30:39.:30:48.
:30:49.:30:57.

her first attempt. The last athlete chat with her coach. Not looking

:30:57.:31:04.

particularly happy. She looked OK in warm-up. Here's the Russian. And

:31:04.:31:14.
:31:14.:31:18.

the first athlete to go clear. A would hope that is what Holly

:31:18.:31:25.

Bleasdale would to achieve that the first attempt. Holly has two more

:31:25.:31:34.

attempts to get this height and JONATHAN EDWARDS: A slightly nerve-

:31:34.:31:39.

racking start to her indoor campaign, for Holly. Yes, I have to

:31:39.:31:47.

say. I have got sweaty palms. The first attempt for an athlete of

:31:47.:31:51.

Holly's calibre, she can clear that at her first attempt. She seemed to

:31:51.:31:55.

struggle. Sometimes when you're waiting around, you can get a bit

:31:55.:32:00.

tired. But she has been in these long, drawn-out competitions before.

:32:00.:32:05.

She looks like she has not got much turnover at this moment in time and

:32:05.:32:10.

you look at the contacts on the floor, she does not look sharp. She

:32:10.:32:15.

was not even tight over the bar. So I am a bit nervous. I am a bit

:32:15.:32:19.

concerned. But I expect her to do better in the next attempt. One

:32:20.:32:23.

thing she did say in her interview was quite alarming, when her coach

:32:23.:32:32.

tells you that there are 13 things that she can work on. There a shot

:32:32.:32:35.

of adrenalin for her. Let's get back out on the track for the

:32:35.:32:45.
:32:45.:32:53.

second final of the men's 60m the final at 6:45pm UK time to. The

:32:53.:33:03.
:33:03.:33:17.

favourite from Russia, Sergey the Russian has only been beaten

:33:17.:33:25.

twice, once in Birmingham, we saw him beaten by his team-mate and

:33:25.:33:33.

also the American. A bit of a glitch. He looked really good in

:33:33.:33:38.

qualification. 7.52. And given the fact that seven put 50 is the equal

:33:38.:33:43.

fastest in the year so far, gives you some indication of the shape he

:33:43.:33:51.

is in. The person alongside him has been going well as well as the

:33:51.:33:54.

French athlete. The French athlete was rather fortunate to come

:33:54.:33:59.

through this morning after having done a false start to all of our

:33:59.:34:09.
:34:09.:34:21.

eyes. But he managed to argue his goes into the start into the set

:34:21.:34:31.
:34:31.:34:50.

again. Very close for the 4th spot, the Hungarian did well as well. I

:34:50.:34:55.

cannot see him getting beat. Not quite as good a start as I expected.

:34:55.:34:59.

Colin, he is so good and technically good as well. He is

:34:59.:35:03.

good outdoors but assuring out of the blocks, maybe not as good as

:35:03.:35:07.

some of the others but he finishes his race well. And ultimately, it

:35:07.:35:12.

is to crosses the line first. It is as simple as that. This man does it

:35:12.:35:16.

with ease. No stressed or strain, calls himself through the field. He

:35:16.:35:21.

knows he is the main man and let everybody else wonder what he can

:35:21.:35:28.

do. If he wants to get down to the fast times and get into the 30s, he

:35:28.:35:34.

needs to nail the start. He does not work very effectively into the

:35:34.:35:37.

first hurdle and that costs him. The head goes very low, it looks

:35:37.:35:41.

like he will overbalance. Sometimes when you start, you start comes

:35:41.:35:45.

from what you used to do as a kid and it has not been developed so

:35:45.:35:49.

what he needs to do is to that the videos, look at where he can

:35:49.:35:53.

improve, feel he is strong and then push his start a bit. Takings of a

:35:53.:35:57.

bit off the line. Do not crowd himself too much and that will make

:35:57.:36:00.

him more aggressive in to the first hurdle and he can really compete

:36:00.:36:09.

against the top of the world. as clean, you saw him smashed

:36:09.:36:13.

through the third hurdle or 4th hurdle, he was much cleaner this

:36:13.:36:18.

morning, that was more a strength, but still could nonetheless. Yes, a

:36:18.:36:23.

but still could nonetheless. Yes, a strong performance by hand. You got

:36:23.:36:27.

there before I even knew! But Sergey Shubenkov looked very good

:36:27.:36:37.
:36:37.:36:40.

there. He is no Colin Jackson, is leading now and Jackson is holding

:36:40.:36:48.

him. Jackson wins it. Not as fast as his semi-final and he says, my

:36:48.:36:52.

goodness me, I made hard work of that but he is the new European

:36:52.:36:57.

indoor champion. Jackson got away very well and it is Jackson under

:36:57.:37:04.

pressure but he takes it. A brilliant run. Colin got away from

:37:04.:37:08.

the blocks brilliantly. Jackson is storming down the track. He will

:37:08.:37:16.

win this, it looked like... 7.422. Not quite as quick as he achieved

:37:16.:37:20.

in semi-final qualification but Colin Jackson is the European

:37:20.:37:30.
:37:30.:37:30.

indoor hurdles champion for the I have to say on that seven -- 7.42

:37:30.:37:35.

I thought your trail leg looked a little slow! I was exhausted from a

:37:35.:37:42.

60m. What was the idea behind the 60m? It was obviously your

:37:42.:37:45.

speciality, annoyed by sprinters for beating them? I am a bit

:37:45.:37:49.

playful when it comes to the workload and I was training very

:37:49.:37:52.

well with Linford Christie in Australia and it was he suggesting

:37:52.:37:56.

I should concentrate on the 60m at the European indoors so I did that

:37:56.:38:00.

and I ended up winning both titles. So it was a good not from Linford

:38:00.:38:04.

Christie. You talk about some athletes talking about some indoors

:38:04.:38:09.

and you always loved it. And yes, it broke up the monotony of the

:38:09.:38:12.

preparations for the summer and I could still work on being very

:38:12.:38:17.

competitive and luckily not have to break in too much of my

:38:17.:38:20.

preparations in the summer. I spent a bit more time in the gym, getting

:38:20.:38:24.

a bit more physically stronger for the indoor season so only a bit of

:38:24.:38:34.
:38:34.:38:35.

a tweet for my training rather than a real hunger focus. A 10 bet on

:38:35.:38:42.

60 on the final, who is it on? Sergey Shubenkov, it will take a

:38:42.:38:45.

lot to beat him. I and the women's hurdles coming up now, the semi-

:38:45.:38:50.

finals, who should we look out for? Probably the Turkish European

:38:51.:38:55.

champion. She has an explosive start outdoors. At the first

:38:55.:38:59.

qualifying round we did not see her exploding out of the box but she

:39:00.:39:03.

hauled herself through. He has come under eight seconds this year so I

:39:03.:39:08.

would look to see what she can do. Thank you, Colin, with a head back

:39:08.:39:18.
:39:18.:39:24.

times in the heat. This is how they finished in the first semi-final.

:39:25.:39:29.

Martinot-Lagarde looking very impressive. The result of the

:39:29.:39:38.

second heat as well, Sergey Shubenkov, with the German,

:39:38.:39:48.
:39:48.:39:50.

Hungarian and Max, the Belorussian going through as well. A hard man

:39:50.:39:58.

to beat, Sergey Shubenkov the fastest there. It is his much to

:39:58.:40:05.

lose. -- his match. On to the women's 60m hurdles, the first

:40:05.:40:12.

semi-final. And very close because 11 athletes in the heats separated

:40:12.:40:22.
:40:22.:40:29.

only by eight one hundredth of a to the final which takes place just

:40:29.:40:37.

before 8 o'clock Swedish time, just before 7 o'clock UK time. The

:40:37.:40:44.

Finnish athlete going in 7th, the record-holder indoors and out. And

:40:44.:40:54.
:40:54.:40:54.

looking at the last couple of athletes, the women to beat, 3, 4,

:40:54.:41:04.
:41:04.:41:05.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds

:41:05.:41:45.

5, the Russian, you can see her in as well as Alina Talay. Kondokova

:41:45.:41:51.

get there, she is through in the time of eight seconds flat for

:41:51.:41:57.

Kondokova. We thought it would be flat, closer than the heats and not

:41:57.:42:00.

a Hu Jintao between them in the semi-final either. It was very

:42:00.:42:04.

close, the same two athletes were in the same heat this morning and

:42:04.:42:12.

the result will be the same, I think. Kondokova just sneak in.

:42:12.:42:17.

Nothing special happening in the women's hurdling so the performance

:42:17.:42:23.

of eight seconds is always going to be a feature. It produced a very

:42:23.:42:31.

even eight seconds. Thrust and counter flights from Kondokova

:42:32.:42:38.

responding well to the threat of Alina Talay. Taking the gold in the

:42:38.:42:43.

final later on this evening possibly, she has taken victory in

:42:43.:42:48.

the first semi-final. Eight seconds dead and confirmation of the other

:42:48.:42:55.

qualifiers coming through. Alina Talay and it was between these two.

:42:55.:43:00.

They are used to battling between each other. Running off the

:43:00.:43:10.
:43:10.:43:13.

barriers well, it will be another Robbie Grabarz waiting to come in

:43:13.:43:16.

in the qualifications of the men's high jump, still waiting for the

:43:16.:43:19.

second attempt for Holly Bleasdale on the pole vault. But women now

:43:20.:43:29.
:43:30.:43:34.

catch up with the women's 800m and Yana Maksimava still

:43:34.:43:38.

hanging on to a medal position at the moment. She is under pressure

:43:38.:43:47.

in this long jump. She is not a great long jumper. That is around

:43:47.:43:53.

about the six-metre mark. We would expect the better jumpers to be

:43:53.:44:03.
:44:03.:44:06.

class malty event athlete. But Yana Maksimava came through strongly

:44:06.:44:16.
:44:16.:44:17.

earlier today. 1.90 in the high jump. Not bad at all. 5.94, 831

:44:17.:44:24.

points and already down in second place. This lady is in pole

:44:24.:44:29.

position but needs a lot longer in order to put herself some distance

:44:29.:44:33.

between herself and the rest when it comes to the 800m and that looks

:44:33.:44:41.

a little better. She is the defending champion. The French No.

:44:41.:44:48.

1 so she would love to defend this title successfully. Good judgement

:44:48.:44:51.

on the take off board. She always gets tremendous hype when she takes

:44:51.:44:59.

off. -- height. Right through the take-off., although she needs to

:44:59.:45:04.

tidy it up a bit in terms of the direction on take off but 6.25 is

:45:04.:45:09.

good, it extend her lead over everybody. This young athlete is a

:45:09.:45:16.

fantastic talent. She broke the world junior record for pentathlon

:45:16.:45:25.

recently. Over six feet tall and just 18 years old. Reminiscent of

:45:25.:45:31.

Great Britain's very own Morgan lake, a precocious 15-year-old

:45:31.:45:35.

heptathletes. Recently came second in the senior national

:45:35.:45:41.

championships in high jump. She is that good. She moves up into second

:45:41.:45:51.

over the rest. That looks a little longer. She gets the white flag. At

:46:08.:46:15.

the moment, the gap between her and second places around about five

:46:15.:46:23.

seconds. If she has increased a distance... She could have moved

:46:23.:46:31.

even further ahead. Looks very strong. It is 6.32. That means the

:46:31.:46:35.

gap going into the last event is seven seconds. A good achievement

:46:35.:46:45.

best. She has been in as good a shipper she has been for a while.

Yanit has not raced that much. She has looked in good form in

:48:16.:48:45.

qualification. She is the two-time the quickest we have seen. That is

:48:45.:48:51.

almost as quick as we have seen in Europe all year. That was close. I

:48:51.:48:56.

thought this semi-final would have a better quality in it. The Italian

:48:56.:49:03.

came in late in the end. Nevin Yanit just gets it. Ba will be a

:49:03.:49:08.

good final. It will be very exciting. The women's final always

:49:08.:49:12.

tends to be. They are all technically good. If any of them

:49:12.:49:18.

make a mistake... It will be a really tight final. Nevin Yanit,

:49:18.:49:23.

she has gone under eight seconds. She did not have the best start. We

:49:23.:49:28.

have more to come from her, I think. Alleyne Barings and a stronger

:49:28.:49:33.

start. She is the European outdoor champion, Nevin Yanit. She will

:49:33.:49:39.

want to add this title to that. Let us look at the box. Ireland have a

:49:39.:49:46.

personal best of 7.84. She would be clearly leading this field if she

:49:46.:49:52.

was at her best. She is working her way back from injury. She has heard

:49:52.:49:57.

her hamstring, back. This will be a tight race. -- hurt her hamstring.

I am looking forward to it. That final is coming up later. The

from the field at the moment with one lap to go. Really leaving a

:50:53.:51:03.
:51:03.:51:07.

long trail behind him. They cannot close the gap. He is taking it on

:51:07.:51:13.

and he has done it. Looking full of fight. Britain will have two

remarkable wins. They have a remarkable record. Just outside the

:52:11.:52:15.

is performing magnificently. He is on the shoulder of the West German.

Steve heard is ahead of the West German. He is going for the silver.

He is running the race of his life. The Spaniard has fallen. He is

:52:41.:52:44.

Britain's win. The greatest run of his life.

:52:44.:52:50.

In 1990, it was the term of Scottish run at, Keane. He took the

:52:50.:52:57.

European indoor title. He had sharp elbows. He did not need them there.

P was away and clear. It was a magical moment. He then won the

world indoors at Toronto. Next it is Mukhtar Mohammed.

:53:21.:53:26.

A few last moments for him. A real opportunity for him. He ran well in

:53:26.:53:30.

Birmingham. He was under the weather last week. He went to

:53:30.:53:37.

Stockholm. He ran up her 1,000m race. It did not go as well as he

:53:37.:53:42.

hoped. He is feeling better now. He a very good week preparing for this.

:53:42.:53:52.
:53:52.:53:53.

Let us hope it goes well for him here. Look at that 60m hurdles.

:56:36.:56:43.

keeps. The Swede is controlling the race at the moment. The crowd will

:56:43.:56:48.

be excited to see him progress. When you run at a pace, it is

:56:48.:56:55.

giving everyone a chance. Muck up - - Mukhtar Mohammed is doing a good

:56:55.:57:03.

job. He has not able to pass. Andreas Ihle re pacts hold them

:57:03.:57:13.
:57:13.:57:13.

back. But of two go through. Mukhtar Mohammed his second. That

:57:13.:57:18.

is a better move. He keeps getting pushed back each time. He is using

:57:18.:57:28.
:57:28.:57:29.

up valuable energy. He will have to attack hard round the top bend.

:57:29.:57:34.

Mukhtar Mohammed is any good place. He has got to be strong. It looks

:57:34.:57:44.

as though he will be. He had to be strong. Pushing, shoving, that is

:57:44.:57:48.

what you get indoors. It is not nice or pretty. You have got to

:57:48.:57:53.

look after yourself. He did it reasonably well. He did not panic.

:57:53.:57:58.

The exactly. A bit of inexperience showing. He did not impose himself

:57:58.:58:07.

enough on the race. Fighting hard down there and salvaging the winner.

:58:07.:58:16.

-- the wind. Johan Rogestedt, look at his gritted teeth. He looks more

:58:16.:58:20.

controlled and relax from the other angle. He will blow-outs and

:58:20.:58:25.

cobwebs and go into the next round more confident. What you would say,

:58:25.:58:31.

he has won and that is good but the last lap was the best lap. There

:58:31.:58:36.

were for that laps and the best was the last one. When you have got

:58:36.:58:42.

that ability, you do not panic. -- there were four Labs. We might have

:58:42.:58:48.

expected him to move through. The main thing was he did not try and

:58:48.:58:52.

make up the ground. He did not panic. He got another shot as he

:58:52.:58:57.

came round the last bend. He knows where he needs to go. He is looking

:58:57.:59:01.

forward and maintaining his start. He does not look like he is

:59:01.:59:05.

panicking. He is just showing his inexperience a bit. The other men

:59:05.:59:12.

are bigger. He is new at this level. He spent a lot of last year trying

:59:12.:59:17.

to qualify and did not make it. He has burst through. He comes isn the

:59:17.:59:22.

fastest time. It came through at the end, his talent, and he was

:59:22.:59:26.

able to control it and get what he needed. It will have done him good

:59:26.:59:33.

to have that run. He will run a more constantly in the next round.

:59:33.:59:38.

more constantly in the next round. -- more confidently. There was a

:59:38.:59:44.

lot of bumping and battling their. It is not pretty sometimes. It is

:59:44.:59:53.

not what I wanted. Today, I ran his race, the Swedish man. He had a

:59:53.:59:58.

good crowd behind him. I said to myself in the race, do not panic,

:59:58.:00:03.

have a good finish. Today I was disappointed in my race. But I am

:00:03.:00:08.

glad I got through. It is all part of the learning curve. This is all

:00:08.:00:13.

new to you. It is getting used to the atmosphere and the race. You

:00:13.:00:17.

might have to impose yourself on the race more. Indoors is very

:00:17.:00:20.

difficult. There is a lot of pushing and shoving. You cannot

:00:20.:00:27.

waste energy. A key is to come through with a victory which is

:00:27.:00:31.

what you did. What confidence does that give you? Before, my

:00:31.:00:37.

confidence was high, because I know I can get into the final. Hopefully,

:00:37.:00:43.

I can get in the final night. We wish you well for tomorrow. Thank

that. A good high risk strategy that Joe plays. He makes it slow.

:05:40.:05:45.

That was really impressive. Confirmation of it. Not the

quickest time, but he looked very composed and controlled. Kevin

:05:53.:05:56.

Lopez, very experienced, could not quite get to him and had to sit

too slow possibly. Phil Jones is a patient man, he is calling him in

first hit with Mukhtar Mohammed. Yes, I tried to control the race,

:06:33.:06:36.

everybody wants to be at the front and when you are there, you need to

:06:36.:06:44.

hold your line. The Norwegian tried to squeeze through but no room on

:07:25.:07:29.

over at the second attempt. You can take your finger off the panic

:07:29.:07:36.

button, Denise! Yes, nervous times but good expectations that we were

:07:36.:07:40.

thinking. She had to rectify some problems and in the first attempt,

:07:40.:07:45.

she looked a bit laboured but this second attempt, a bit more positive

:07:45.:07:50.

and a bit more committed. That is the result. A great clearance from

:07:50.:07:54.

her. Settled the nerves and let's see her progress through this

:07:54.:08:00.

qualification. We did not think she looked super sharp but we will come

:08:00.:08:10.
:08:10.:08:14.

back to that. Robbie is about to go the arena, and his will be his

:08:14.:08:18.

first jump of the competition, let's hope he does not repeat

:08:18.:08:23.

Holly's performers were the first jump. The European outdoor champion

:08:23.:08:27.

nastier, that was where he burst on the scene. Before he got his

:08:27.:08:37.
:08:37.:08:37.

Olympic bronze medal. To become amazing. Probably has had a red can

:08:37.:08:47.

put out in front of the high jump but because the high -- the 800m is

:08:47.:08:57.
:08:57.:09:02.

about to start. The third round. One young man I am interested in

:09:02.:09:10.

watching his Zan Rudolf. Getting clipped from behind, lots of

:09:10.:09:16.

pushing, Renars Stepins is running on the inside, and then Rudolph

:09:16.:09:21.

pushing, the man at the front is not getting pushed. Zan Rudolf

:09:21.:09:29.

could really perform here. In a bad position though, Paula. Yes, he

:09:29.:09:33.

started off. He looked as if he was getting into the right position

:09:33.:09:37.

with no fear and then proceeded to get ready shoved around in the next

:09:37.:09:44.

couple of 100m. I think the experience is showing with Luis

:09:44.:09:49.

Alberto Marco. He is controlling the race. 55.3 and they know they

:09:49.:09:54.

have gone a bit quicker. And also Renars Stepins has stepped off, but

:09:54.:09:59.

on the outside, young Zan Rudolf, fighting for a position. They are

:09:59.:10:06.

like Spitfires attacking out of this guy. And now Thijmen Kupers is

:10:06.:10:12.

fighting. They take the bell and a Dutch man in the lead. Only the top

:10:12.:10:20.

two to go through. It may be that the fastest loser goes through.

:10:20.:10:25.

Look at Zan Rudolf. In 19-year-old showing that he has got pace but

:10:25.:10:29.

Luis Alberto Marco has got experience. It will be a real

:10:29.:10:34.

sprint to the line here. He has got the strength? Thijmen Kupers is

:10:34.:10:40.

still holding him. It could be Zan Rudolf losing out. Luis Alberto

:10:40.:10:45.

Marco and Thijmen Kupers, the two. It will be close with two more heat

:10:45.:10:50.

to come up. Messy again and you would think, Paula, if you were the

:10:50.:10:55.

coach for that young lad, this 19- year-old is good. Where he was in

:10:55.:11:00.

the first two laps, he got pushed around a bit but you want to get a

:11:00.:11:04.

smooth run in the early rounds and he did not get that. Exactly, you

:11:04.:11:07.

could see his number was half hanging off and he spent a lot of

:11:07.:11:12.

time running in lane three there. Bethan that they wasted a lot of

:11:12.:11:15.

energy and it just meant that he was on the back foot and not able

:11:15.:11:25.
:11:25.:11:30.

last lap, he is putting himself in the right position to be able to

:11:30.:11:34.

attack but he has used other bit of energy and he is running wide as he

:11:35.:11:42.

comes round this band. Thijmen Kupers is holding out the youngster

:11:42.:11:47.

wide. You can see how he is leaning in and not able to finish in the

:11:47.:11:51.

straight to close it. It was a slow heat and tough qualifying

:11:51.:12:01.
:12:01.:12:03.

conditions with only two elbows and experience to good

:12:03.:12:11.

effect. As well as Thijmen Kupers. Zan Rudolf would be the fastest

:12:11.:12:14.

loser at the moment but with two more heat, the chances might be

:12:14.:12:24.
:12:24.:12:32.

at Robbie Grabarz, 2.18 metres. He took off a long way from the bar

:12:32.:12:40.

but soared over. Just the third athlete to go clear. This is the

:12:40.:12:43.

second ball of qualification for the high jump. These guys have got

:12:43.:12:47.

the distinct advantage and they know exactly how high they need to

:12:47.:12:51.

achieve and it will not be the automatic qualifying height of 2.31,

:12:51.:13:01.
:13:01.:13:03.

Denise, a nice, comfortable Clements from Robbie Grabarz there.

:13:03.:13:08.

No guarantee it will happen easily. No, and he will not want to take

:13:08.:13:11.

any chances with this. He is looking good and he knows he is in

:13:11.:13:15.

good shape. All he has to do is to be sensible and he knows he can get

:13:15.:13:21.

through. Lots of people that can jump around 2.30, some big guys in

:13:21.:13:25.

Europe have got over that height and he is right up there in the

:13:25.:13:34.

next. -- in the next. He is so confident and he took off miles

:13:34.:13:41.

away -- in the mix. This is about making sure that he gets the

:13:41.:13:45.

clearance and he said in his interview, he is further out. He is

:13:45.:13:49.

stronger, carrying much more speed and he had to make that allowance.

:13:49.:13:53.

He will have to play with his run up but he is looking good.

:13:53.:13:59.

Automatic qualification at 2.31, we doubt it will take that to get

:13:59.:14:04.

through to the final. Micheal Rimmer looking for a good

:14:04.:14:14.
:14:14.:14:19.

performance, a great performance in this, he raced in the 600 metres in

:14:19.:14:25.

Birmingham, that was his first ever indoor race. He had a bit of a

:14:25.:14:32.

collision with Abubaker Kaki but the result was allowed to stand.

:14:32.:14:38.

His main rival here, Andreas Bube and Giordano Benedetti. The first

:14:39.:14:45.

two will go through automatically. It will be tense for those waiting

:14:45.:14:51.

for the fastest losers and Micheal Rimmer's tactic at the moment, to

:14:51.:14:59.

hang back alongside Andreas Bube and let the others have a go. A bit

:14:59.:15:04.

of a bar-room brawl in the previous heat. Micheal Rimmer not

:15:04.:15:08.

experienced in the indoor races. Yes, he is very new to indoor

:15:08.:15:12.

racing as his first ending in Birmingham ended in a collision

:15:12.:15:18.

where he showed his inexperience. He also does not sit easily, he

:15:18.:15:28.

does not want to add too much pressure on his shoulders. He is

:15:28.:15:38.
:15:38.:15:54.

racing in his lucky T-shirt someone to take it quicker. They

:15:54.:16:02.

have not got to run much faster to guarantee themselves a spot.

:16:02.:16:06.

earnest manner in the race is out in front at the moment. Michael

:16:06.:16:13.

Rimmer as having a look around at the moment. Andreas Bube is that

:16:13.:16:18.

the bat. He will have to make a move now. The paced lifts once more.

:16:18.:16:25.

-- the pace. Michael Rimmer will put the squeeze on and try and ease

:16:25.:16:33.

around the outside. Andreas Bube is holding him off. Michael Rimmer

:16:33.:16:43.
:16:43.:16:43.

will have to rely on fastest loser. The time is 1.5 go. Anis Ananenka

:16:43.:16:51.

is the winner. -- 1.50. By my reckoning, Michael Rimmer has not

:16:51.:16:59.

made it through as fastest loser. And there is another he to go. He

:16:59.:17:04.

will not be happy with that. He will have learned some lessons.

:17:04.:17:10.

What did he go wrong? There was too much to do. He did not have their

:17:10.:17:19.

guests to get past Andreas Bube beef -- Andreas Bube. Michael

:17:19.:17:24.

Rimmer strained by was not able to do it. You see him coming round

:17:24.:17:33.

here, he looked like he was in control. He is covering everything

:17:33.:17:38.

there. It looks like he is following the leader, he may be

:17:38.:17:44.

gets thrown off his stride as Andreas Bube comes past. I did not

:17:44.:17:48.

see any connection there. He is trying to go around but cannot do

:17:49.:17:55.

it. Then the tension comes in and he is getting tired. He is a man

:17:55.:18:05.
:18:05.:18:06.

that has one 1.46 this season so You ran impressively in Birmingham.

:18:06.:18:12.

You will one of the favourites but he did not work today. Why? I got

:18:12.:18:19.

caught out with a slow first lap. I have not done anything this the

:18:19.:18:28.

Civic. It felt good. I think maybe I should have 100% committed. He

:18:28.:18:34.

held me off. -- anything this specific. You are relatively new to

:18:35.:18:38.

this. You seemed like you were controlling it pretty well. You

:18:38.:18:43.

were doing the right things when you need to do. I think so. It is

:18:43.:18:51.

getting used to it. You cannot take over easily. It is a steep learning

:18:51.:18:59.

curve. More from here for you now? A different day, I will come back.

:18:59.:19:04.

A different day, I will come back. Not easy to take for Michael Rimmer.

:19:04.:19:12.

He was a bit too slow in the first half. Anis Ananenka wins it.

:19:12.:19:22.
:19:22.:19:22.

Michael Rimmer is not fast enough as the fastest loser. Brimmer is

:19:22.:19:32.
:19:32.:19:33.

out. -- Michael Rimmer is out. Now to the final heat. I am sure Adam

:19:33.:19:43.
:19:43.:19:45.

Kszczot will be surprised not to see Michael River Coe go through. -

:19:45.:19:55.
:19:55.:19:59.

- Michael Rimmer. First two to go through. It just shows, the fastest

:19:59.:20:04.

times do not come into this. It is not about who has got the fastest

:20:04.:20:08.

time. Michael Rimmer is top of the rankings but he is not true. Joe

:20:08.:20:12.

Thomas got through easily. He was in the right places at the right

:20:12.:20:16.

time. What will happen here? The defending champion is right at the

:20:16.:20:26.
:20:26.:20:27.

back. He does not mind being there at all. He is in great shape. We

:20:27.:20:32.

expected to dominate qualifications and the final. Absolutely. He is

:20:32.:20:42.
:20:42.:20:42.

the man on form. He is realising he beasts -- he needs to move up. Goes

:20:42.:20:46.

around. Gets himself into a bit more of a contention slot. He is in

:20:46.:20:54.

fourth place. For he has the fast finishers. He knows how to wind it

:20:54.:21:01.

up. He will have gained confidence from seeing Michael Rimmer go out.

:21:01.:21:10.

Nikolaus Franzmair is at the front. He is doing a good job. Spain

:21:10.:21:14.

already have two in the next round. He is attacking the last 200 metres.

:21:14.:21:23.

He is getting a nudge. This is a man in good form. He knows how to

:21:23.:21:31.

run indoors. He is looking for danger, there is none. We have no

:21:31.:21:34.

doubt about our winner, he is just gliding through, the defending

:21:34.:21:40.

champion from Poland, Adam Kszczot. He is just checking behind. The

:21:40.:21:47.

Jozef Repcik is through as well. That is the quickest of the first-

:21:47.:21:52.

round heats. It looks as if he is blowing a bit but he has got the

:21:52.:21:57.

pace. When he is in bother, he can turn on the burners and get out of

:21:57.:22:02.

trouble. He is dangers on the last lap. I think he has got the pace,

:22:02.:22:07.

the experience. -- are dangerous. He can use that to control the race.

:22:07.:22:14.

It is about that, coming in and imposing yourself on the race. He

:22:14.:22:18.

wants to move to the next round with confidence and show the others

:22:18.:22:25.

what he has got. It is the first round of qualification for the

:22:26.:22:33.

women's triple jump. There is the British number one Emile Aldama. --

:22:33.:22:43.
:22:43.:22:47.

Yamile Aldama. That looks pretty useful. She has not been in great

:22:47.:22:52.

form but she has been recovering from a bad shoulder. Certainly

:22:52.:22:58.

getting better and better as the season progresses. She was looking

:22:58.:23:05.

anxiously for a coach. But I think she can be pleased with that. There

:23:05.:23:12.

is the automatic qualifying line. That will be 14 metres. Only two

:23:12.:23:22.
:23:22.:23:25.

have done it so far. Yamile Aldama is in third place.

:23:25.:23:30.

She is a lovely jumper to watch. Just lacking a bit of sharpness

:23:30.:23:35.

after injury. She is a beautiful athlete. Strong, everything you

:23:35.:23:41.

would look for in a triple jumper. She has good speed, good phases. It

:23:41.:23:46.

will not take much, if she could get up to something like... Not

:23:46.:23:52.

even her best but around the 14 mark, she could be in with a shot.

:23:52.:24:01.

High hopes for a. Next up, it is that 1,500m for the women. We have

:24:01.:24:05.

Laura Muir of Scotland in the first Laura Muir of Scotland in the first

:24:05.:24:09.

heat. She is making her senior Championship debut. Tell me the

:24:09.:24:15.

feelings as you head into a senior Championship. I did not plan to be

:24:15.:24:21.

here. I wanted to see how things went. I am pleased to be here. I

:24:21.:24:26.

want to get a personal best. What was the reaction when it you got

:24:26.:24:33.

through? A I was delighted. It is the first senior international, I

:24:33.:24:41.

am so happy. It preps me for the outdoor season to come. This will

:24:41.:24:50.

carry forward? There are so many experienced runners so it will

:24:50.:24:55.

depend on the process. Meeting all the team managers and getting

:24:55.:25:02.

settled into the team structure and racing experience should be really

:25:02.:25:10.

good. It seems like you are a fast learner. You are pushed around last

:25:10.:25:19.

year. This is not the case now. Last year, I was still a junior,

:25:19.:25:24.

the 1,500 is really tactical. I lost concentration sometimes. I

:25:24.:25:29.

missed the break when people went. So this time, I thought I would be

:25:29.:25:39.
:25:39.:25:41.

ready. You never know what will great opportunity for Laura Muir.

:25:41.:25:47.

Pick out a few names. You might reckon -- you might recognise the

:25:47.:25:53.

Russian. She is the world record holder. Natalia Rodriguez is an

:25:53.:25:59.

experienced athlete. She has won medals at the highest level. The

:25:59.:26:09.
:26:09.:26:12.

Russians have already -- have always been able to won medals.

:26:13.:26:20.

Britannia Rodrigues victory that bronze in 2011. -- Natalia

:26:20.:26:30.
:26:30.:26:48.

controversy, the Spaniard. Laura Muir's task is a task -- is a tough

:26:48.:26:53.

one. She must finish in the fastest loser spots. A bit of a

:26:53.:26:57.

disadvantage to be in the first race. She would have liked to have

:26:57.:27:01.

been in the third one. We will break off for Holly Bleasdale.

:27:01.:27:07.

First attempt at 4.46. Oh, it looked a bit laboured but she gets

:27:07.:27:14.

a. She crawled over there. The 5th athlete to clear this height. That

:27:14.:27:18.

will be good enough to take her through to the final. This

:27:18.:27:26.

qualifying competition that still continues. Well done.

:27:26.:27:36.

No mistakes for Holly Bleasdale. In this 1,500m, you can see a mish-

:27:36.:27:41.

mash. The Russia was tripped and fell, she lost about 15 metres but

:27:41.:27:51.
:27:51.:27:52.

got back in the race. Laura Muir will beat looking for a personal

:27:52.:27:58.

best. She has not been having a great indoor season and a slow race

:27:58.:28:02.

would not have suited her. At least they are running at a decent pace

:28:02.:28:07.

in the early stages. The way that Laura needs to look at this is this

:28:07.:28:12.

race is her final, she needs to go out and run it as hard as she can,

:28:12.:28:16.

go for a personal best. There is no point in running outside of a

:28:17.:28:21.

personal best and saying, could I have made the final? She needs to

:28:21.:28:25.

go out and put everything on the line. She has to give everything

:28:25.:28:30.

she can. She asked a walkaway knowing she has given everything. -

:28:30.:28:36.

- she has to walk away. The Russian is controlling the race at the

:28:36.:28:46.

moment. She is slowing a little. Danuta Urbanik has a lot of

:28:46.:28:50.

experience, keeping close to the back. Anna Shchagina is drifting

:28:50.:28:56.

back down the field. Laura Muir is between two world-class 1,500m

:28:56.:29:00.

runners. She is in excellent company. She is running really well.

:29:00.:29:06.

She is not intimidated. She needs to watch Natalia Rodriguez as it

:29:06.:29:13.

gets into the closing stages. She does have a fast finish. She is not

:29:13.:29:17.

afraid to push through. But Laura Muir is keeping herself where she

:29:17.:29:27.
:29:27.:29:31.

wants to be. She is able to cover anything that happens. Despite Anna

:29:31.:29:37.

Shchagina's greatness -- despite the Russian's greatness, we have

:29:37.:29:41.

been talking about the issues around Russian athletics,

:29:41.:29:45.

particularly over two years, it is good the pressure is on now. The

:29:45.:29:50.

attention has been turned towards the Russian Federation. It is good

:29:50.:30:00.
:30:00.:30:06.

to see so many positive cases coming through. The pace has not

:30:06.:30:11.

been that good. She is struggling to put on. Look at Natalia

:30:11.:30:16.

Rodriguez. She is cruising through. Laura Muir is still in there

:30:16.:30:22.

fighting. Natalia Rodriguez will be feeling confident. She has expended

:30:22.:30:32.
:30:32.:30:34.

a lot more energy. Natalia Rodriguez should be easing back.

:30:34.:30:40.

Laura Muir doing her best. That is the world record holder she is

:30:40.:30:47.

trying to get past. Laura Muir is just 19. She is with two world

:30:47.:30:52.

athletes. Look at Laura Muir. An attack. She has got to get in the

:30:52.:30:57.

top two. If she does that, she will be through. What a great run by the

:30:57.:31:02.

youngster. Natalia Rodriguez wins and Laura Muir, the race of her

:31:02.:31:06.

life, it will be close to her best. Probably inside it. Goodness me,

:31:07.:31:14.

that is a massive achievement she has taken. Look at the first lap.

:31:14.:31:18.

That is where the fall happened. Laura Muir was well clear. She ran

:31:18.:31:23.

a perfect race, got involved early on. Ran a good pace. It was the

:31:23.:31:29.

perfect pace of a. A bit of speed, a real gutsy finish. -- perfect

:31:29.:31:34.

pace for her. All of her supporters will be jumping up and down. That

:31:34.:31:44.
:31:44.:31:59.

is a good target for her. What a never give up fighting and that the

:31:59.:32:03.

leisure are struggling to get past, and even though there are closing

:32:03.:32:07.

on Natalia Rodriguez, but Natalia Rodriguez have the extra gear which

:32:07.:32:11.

she stepped into. Laura is fighting hard and digging in deep and it

:32:11.:32:16.

just showed that she did not have the base that she had in previous

:32:16.:32:26.
:32:26.:32:27.

her life, personal best and it is not just about people coming and

:32:27.:32:32.

winning medals, right at the start of these championships Laura Muir

:32:32.:32:36.

on paper has not got a chance of coming in the top six but she has

:32:36.:32:39.

thrown the paper out of the window and put in a great performance to

:32:39.:32:49.
:32:49.:32:56.

her winning time here, and a personal best for Laura Muir of

:32:56.:33:01.

Scotland and Great Britain. With two more races to come, the others

:33:01.:33:11.
:33:11.:33:18.

will have to hope they can go 2.23 metres,. He accelerates and

:33:18.:33:27.

flew over there. Fine jumping for Robbie. European outdoor champion

:33:27.:33:32.

and by the time we get to the final, we are sure he will be wanting to

:33:32.:33:37.

become the European indoor champion as well. Two jumps and 100% success

:33:37.:33:47.
:33:47.:33:55.

above the rest in this heat and perhaps in this event, Abeba

:33:55.:34:04.

Aregawi, now of Sweden. Erstwhile Ethiopian athlete, only started

:34:04.:34:09.

competing for Sweden in December. And she has a season's best which

:34:09.:34:15.

is a good few seconds quicker than anybody else. Elina Sujew, one of

:34:15.:34:21.

the Sujew twins, her sister goes in the next race. In this field of

:34:21.:34:24.

seven, the first two through and the fastest losers to go through to

:34:24.:34:34.

the final tomorrow. Here it is all about Eilidh -- it is all about

:34:34.:34:44.

Abeba Aregawi. She settled in her new Swedish should. She gets

:34:44.:34:53.

clipped at first but the crowd will lift her all the way round. Some

:34:53.:35:03.
:35:03.:35:15.

decides to take it out and control things. Stay out of danger in the

:35:15.:35:19.

heats, that is all that matters. You do not want to have all the

:35:19.:35:27.

form in the world and get knocked out, like Marusa Mismas in the last

:35:27.:35:32.

round. Abeba Aregawi running in front of her new home crowd now.

:35:32.:35:38.

The first time was in the race in Stockholm earlier where she ran the

:35:38.:35:41.

3.58 to top the rankings coming into this and to show that she is

:35:42.:35:48.

the person to beat. And for her, she does not want to say a

:35:48.:35:56.

particular place, the pace though she has not trained at, and the

:35:56.:36:01.

others sitting in behind her, letting her control the pace and

:36:01.:36:11.
:36:11.:36:17.

winning the race that she wants to. Svetlana the second place at her

:36:17.:36:24.

heels. You get the chance to watch for the previous race in the second

:36:24.:36:29.

heat, three fastest losers to go through to the final. At the moment,

:36:29.:36:32.

Abeba Aregawi is entirely Inc control. She represented Ethiopia

:36:32.:36:42.
:36:42.:36:43.

at the Olympics in London it can be reduced to just four months with no

:36:43.:36:48.

real protest by Ethiopia so here she is. She is married to a Swede

:36:48.:36:57.

and competing for Sweden. It could be a gold medal for her tomorrow.

:36:57.:37:01.

In front of this new home crowd, she still spends a fair amount of

:37:01.:37:06.

time in Ethiopia training and not so much time here in Sweden but

:37:06.:37:16.
:37:16.:37:22.

understandable in the winter here in Sweden. Second place is Natallia

:37:22.:37:28.

Kareiva, and a season's best for other athletes. She is seconds

:37:28.:37:32.

Claire of anybody else, Abeba Aregawi. A different class to a lot

:37:32.:37:37.

of these athletes -- seconds clear. She is nine seconds faster than the

:37:37.:37:42.

next person in this race. I don't think that will really show, she is

:37:42.:37:49.

moving away now and she is trying to take the field a bit back. Sujew

:37:49.:37:54.

also trying to do with the move in third place but they are not making

:37:54.:38:00.

much impact on Abeba Aregawi. are trying to eat away a bit of the

:38:00.:38:10.
:38:10.:38:11.

gap but a resolute five metres and there is the Russian and Elina

:38:11.:38:21.
:38:21.:38:21.

Sujew, they are battling for the third place. Abeba Aregawi entirely

:38:22.:38:31.

in not troubled. The battle continues full second and third. As

:38:31.:38:36.

we look at the leader, Abeba Aregawi entirely comfortable. She

:38:36.:38:46.
:38:46.:38:49.

is comfortable holding them at this distance. And there looks like the

:38:49.:38:56.

Belorussian athlete will have to go for the third. It looks like it was

:38:56.:39:00.

a dozen over who still may go through as the fastest loser. The

:39:00.:39:06.

automatic place, the second automatic place and hard by Natalia

:39:06.:39:08.

but little doubt about the winner. Entirely in control throughout that

:39:08.:39:17.

race. It was Abeba Aregawi. Berry, very easy and impressive and

:39:17.:39:24.

Natallia Kareiva showing that you need to fight to the line. The is

:39:24.:39:29.

going to the photo finish but it looked like she took it but no

:39:29.:39:39.
:39:39.:39:39.

doubt about the actual winner, Muir in the first heat, qualifying

:39:39.:39:49.
:39:49.:39:51.

by right for the semi-final. She is PHIL JONES: Congratulations on a

:39:51.:39:54.

terrific performance. Lots of people jumping off the sofa with a

:39:54.:40:04.

run like that back at home! I knew it would be close and I have so

:40:04.:40:08.

happy. And to do that against two world-class athletes like that, the

:40:09.:40:17.

world indoor record holder, you beat her! It was really club close

:40:17.:40:22.

to my personal best. The tremendous performance and lots of talk about

:40:22.:40:27.

some of the 1500m guys who could have been picked and they were not

:40:27.:40:30.

and here you are as a 19-year-old who shows what can happen if you

:40:30.:40:36.

give people a chance. So good for this opportunity and that 19, it

:40:36.:40:42.

gives me so much help for the future in races won by a learning

:40:42.:40:52.
:40:52.:40:58.

so much. Keep it going, great to 1500m, it was Natallia Kareiva

:40:58.:41:03.

winning it on the photo finish. Abeba Aregawi well clear and

:41:03.:41:09.

looking very comfortable in did. I think step Linea will go through as

:41:09.:41:19.
:41:19.:41:29.

one of the first fastest losers -- not the prettiest rotational style

:41:29.:41:39.
:41:39.:41:44.

I have ever seen but it is over 20 Out to the letter inside but

:41:44.:41:50.

manages to retain his balance. 20.15, a season's best, he is in

:41:50.:42:00.
:42:00.:42:08.

Way beyond 20 metres. He led the way in qualifying yesterday so

:42:08.:42:12.

Serbia was going to be one of the favourites here. Good balance and

:42:12.:42:21.

tremendous acceleration across the circle that is a long way. A nod of

:42:21.:42:31.
:42:31.:42:38.

in the 1500m third heat, the start list. The other twin of Germany,

:42:38.:42:48.
:42:48.:42:59.

can the Irish athlete ran as well as Laura Muir did? Look at the

:42:59.:43:03.

qualification times, Claire likes running in Sweden, she ran her

:43:03.:43:08.

personal best of 4.13 and she would have to knock another few tenths of

:43:08.:43:13.

a second off that. The fastest loser spot is about four point well.

:43:13.:43:23.
:43:23.:43:23.

They have set off for a bit of a good pace. She has run quicker

:43:23.:43:31.

indoors then she ran out doors last year. Some new runners and there. -

:43:31.:43:37.

- in there. It is slow. And Sujew has just seen her twin sister

:43:37.:43:40.

eliminated in one of the previous heat and knows what she is shooting

:43:40.:43:48.

for. They have the advantage of knowing the two fastest loser times.

:43:48.:43:58.
:43:58.:44:04.

I am surprised they are letting it Irish athlete still at the back, he

:44:04.:44:09.

has dual citizenship, she had the choice of running for Britain but

:44:09.:44:15.

she chose to run for Ireland. Clare is based in the Midlands and just

:44:15.:44:19.

watching what is going on her head. Not a bad place to be, you are

:44:19.:44:26.

getting a clean run through. Sujew really tried to push things on. You

:44:26.:44:29.

could have five women going through if they were quick enough, I am

:44:29.:44:32.

just not sure what she is doing enough yet. She has gone to the

:44:32.:44:39.

front but she did not change the pace. They were still running a

:44:39.:44:49.
:44:49.:44:50.

72nd -- a 70 second place. They need to have a chance of getting

:44:50.:45:00.
:45:00.:45:14.

this race faster. Sujew leads from It will be interesting to see if

:45:14.:45:18.

the Russian has the pace over the last lap. She is letting herself

:45:18.:45:22.

been guided back into fourth place but she wants a better position.

:45:22.:45:28.

would expect the Spanish to have a decent finishing place. Claire

:45:28.:45:34.

Tarplee as well. She wants to be up behind the leading -- the leading

:45:34.:45:38.

four so she does not have much to do in the closing stages. She

:45:38.:45:48.
:45:48.:45:49.

cannot make her mind up. There she does now. Anna Shchagina does not

:45:50.:45:56.

want to go at the front yet. She will attract -- attack just before

:45:56.:46:00.

the bell. Claire Tarplee still has an opportunity. The Russian is in

:46:00.:46:08.

first place. Poland is looking good. Claire Tarplee is in 5th at the

:46:08.:46:12.

moment. She needs a big last lap. The Irish runner is going to move

:46:12.:46:17.

into fourth place but issue close enough to attack? I am not sure.

:46:17.:46:22.

Anna Shchagina is still holding -- holding up the inside. Isabel

:46:23.:46:31.

Macias asked is looking to attack. The Russian is not going to hold on

:46:31.:46:40.

to this. Isabel Macias is going to get it. Only the top two will go

:46:40.:46:45.

through. The first four laps put paid to anybody's chance as going

:46:45.:46:52.

through as the fastest loser. The Spaniards, they teach them young.

:46:52.:47:01.

They are very good. Claire Tarplee was not close enough, the 300

:47:01.:47:11.
:47:11.:47:47.

metres to go, to get herself close the world champion, the Olympic

:47:48.:47:57.
:47:58.:48:18.

You're very welcome. You are retired. What is it like looking

:48:18.:48:23.

back? A I love to see the pictures. It is nice to look back. It feels

:48:23.:48:29.

like it is from a different time. I have great memories. It is nice to

:48:29.:48:36.

see them. World titles, a Olympic titles. The Olympics must stand out

:48:36.:48:39.

titles. The Olympics must stand out as the greatest? When I look back,

:48:39.:48:44.

I am pretty proud of the young girl did so much in the beginning of my

:48:44.:48:49.

career. I had a lot of pressure from home as well. I am from a

:48:49.:48:53.

small country. We had a lot of success in Sweden. I feel happy

:48:53.:48:57.

with being able to manage the pressure and still keep myself and

:48:57.:49:04.

my focus. It was nice. You talk about coming from a small country.

:49:04.:49:10.

You have had incredible success as a country in athletics. Yes. There

:49:10.:49:19.

were amazing years in the beginning of 2,000. It has been hard on the

:49:19.:49:24.

others coming after us. You cannot think and try to compare with that

:49:24.:49:29.

time because it was unique. We were so good at the same time, so many

:49:29.:49:34.

of us. The question everyone asks, and I know Denise asks it as well,

:49:34.:49:39.

you retired from pentathlon relatively early. What we all

:49:39.:49:46.

reasons? I had many reasons. -- what were your reasons. I was

:49:46.:49:50.

satisfied with my career and I wanted a new challenge. It was a

:49:50.:49:54.

joy and happiness and inspiration for the sport that has been my

:49:54.:50:00.

number one priority. After a won gold in Osaka, I was very happy and

:50:00.:50:05.

I wanted to move on and find new challenges. I do not just do it for

:50:05.:50:12.

winning medals, I do it to learn something new and new challenges. I

:50:12.:50:19.

had good lessons after that. I feel happy. You are a legend. We all

:50:19.:50:25.

loved you. Did that anticipation of may be going on to become what

:50:25.:50:30.

could have been a double Olympic champion, that is so rare, and

:50:30.:50:36.

Beijing, I felt, you could have done it? A I could have done it if

:50:36.:50:41.

I had the motivation that it takes to do the event. You need to be

:50:41.:50:46.

motivated to train every day. But I lost the motivation. For me, I am

:50:46.:50:52.

very proud of one gold medal and I will never think, I could have had

:50:52.:50:57.

two. I am proud of the one I have. I am happy for the new challenges

:50:57.:51:01.

and new experiences I have got. By eight would not have made their

:51:01.:51:05.

decision if I thought I would regret it. For me, it has been...

:51:05.:51:10.

It was a good decision and I could not do any different. Another gold

:51:10.:51:14.

medal you would be proud of was here in Gothenburg. That was in

:51:14.:51:21.

2006. It was a privilege to compete in front of the home crowd. That is

:51:21.:51:31.

so special. For you in London, it was amazing. People in the city are

:51:31.:51:37.

cheering for applets. -- athletes. To be in the home crowd is amazing.

:51:37.:51:42.

You were in London. He did not compete. What did you make of

:51:42.:51:47.

Jessica Ennis? She is amazing. I am so happy I have competed against

:51:47.:51:52.

her. I thought she really would break my record and she will do in

:51:52.:51:58.

the future, I think. She is a great athlete and a lovely girl. I was so

:51:58.:52:02.

happy. I was watching her at the end of the competition, the

:52:02.:52:08.

heptathlon, it was amazing. You are retired. It is always a difficult

:52:08.:52:13.

transition, I think, for athletes. How would you find it? It has been

:52:13.:52:17.

quite easy, actually! I was so excited about the other things in

:52:17.:52:22.

my life to open doors that have been closed for some time. I am

:52:22.:52:26.

studying, I am doing other stuff. It is really exciting to do new

:52:26.:52:30.

things and see what is out their. You have been in the bubble of

:52:31.:52:36.

sport for some time so I am happy to be out of it and see what life

:52:36.:52:40.

has to give me. Injuries, were they the ones that forced to out already

:52:40.:52:45.

just had enough? I would have beaten by injuries, I think, they

:52:45.:52:49.

were not too bad. I could have rested and come back. In the end, I

:52:49.:52:54.

am curious about the new life. Sport for me as always been great

:52:54.:52:59.

and fun but it has not been everything. I am looking forward to

:52:59.:53:03.

doing new things. I am quite happy with just being here and doing

:53:03.:53:09.

other things and during the other athletes on. I feel good. Going

:53:09.:53:17.

back to the competitive time, how many occasions did you two compete?

:53:17.:53:22.

Two. When someone says, there is a hurricane coming... It was like,

:53:22.:53:31.

get out the way! There is this girl coming. Everyone knew about this

:53:31.:53:37.

force that was coming. We did European Cup together once. We did

:53:37.:53:44.

Paris as well. It was incredible watching her. To be so technically

:53:44.:53:49.

proficient as so many events is what we all aspire to do. There was

:53:49.:53:53.

no visible weaknesses. You that such an incredible technique. How

:53:53.:54:00.

do you do that? I trained for a long time. I was a kid trying

:54:00.:54:04.

everything out. I love to do different events. I think I played

:54:04.:54:08.

sports for such a long time and tried to figure it out myself. That

:54:08.:54:15.

was maybe a part of it. You can hear the cheering behind us. That

:54:15.:54:24.

is the second race of the 800m. How much did you enjoy competing

:54:24.:54:29.

indoors? How much did you? It's is definitely different. Outdoors is

:54:29.:54:33.

the biggest season but indoors is a bit closer with the crowd and

:54:34.:54:39.

everything. The atmosphere is very nice. I liked to do indoors. Also,

:54:39.:54:44.

it is one day. That is easy. are involved with the organisation

:54:44.:54:47.

of this Championships. How important is it for Swedish

:54:47.:54:51.

athletics? You have had a strong time. Things are not quite so good

:54:51.:54:55.

at the moment. Be is getting better and better. I think it is because

:54:55.:55:00.

they have been comparing -- been compared to us before. It is a lot

:55:00.:55:05.

of pressure. But now there is a lot of new and good talent coming up

:55:05.:55:09.

with young people. Hopefully, the future looks good. It is unfair to

:55:09.:55:14.

compare because we might not have that kind of unique years in many

:55:14.:55:19.

years in Sweden. It was crazy, wasn't it? The whole world was

:55:19.:55:23.

looking as Sweden and saying, what is this system that is producing

:55:23.:55:28.

superstars? A it was crazy. I do not think anyone has a good answer

:55:29.:55:34.

for that. We inspired each other we were free from injury in a team

:55:34.:55:40.

that when you get a good atmosphere going, it just happens. I am happy

:55:40.:55:45.

and proud I was part of it. Coming back to what you will do now, you

:55:45.:55:55.
:55:55.:55:55.

mention studying. Was it art? -- no. I am studying peace and

:55:55.:56:01.

called it right now. It is one of the things I have been doing beside

:56:01.:56:05.

sport that I am really interested in. Where will that take you?

:56:05.:56:09.

will see. I am involved in different organisations and working

:56:09.:56:16.

with different things. I think I should study now before I get too

:56:16.:56:22.

old. I will not go back to school later. I am doing it now so I get a

:56:22.:56:25.

degree. We will then see what happens. And keep involved with

:56:25.:56:31.

sport? A little bit but not in official way. I am supporting my

:56:31.:56:36.

friends. I will do some things in the future as well for sport but

:56:36.:56:40.

more... I am not working very much with sport right now. It is like

:56:40.:56:44.

you want to close a chapter completely and do something utterly

:56:44.:56:49.

different? Maybe that is how I work. Let us get rid of that and do other

:56:49.:56:54.

things. Maybe that is how I work. I like to focus on one thing and move

:56:54.:57:04.

on. Thank you. Thank you for the memories you gave us. We will head

:57:04.:57:14.
:57:14.:57:17.

back out and catch up with Robbie clearance so far in the competition.

:57:17.:57:25.

He just tried it off. A 90% of the way over. It was his calf muscles

:57:25.:57:33.

supple but one. Watch again. -- that pulled that one off. He is so

:57:33.:57:43.
:57:43.:57:57.

quick over the bar. Two more have seen some rotators. When it is

:57:57.:58:02.

done correctly, it is an effective technique for shot put. He does not

:58:02.:58:11.

look very impressed! He launches it over the 20-metre line. He could be

:58:11.:58:21.
:58:21.:58:24.

challenging for the silver-medal position. Indeed it is. Robbie

:58:24.:58:28.

Grabarz had a little trouble at the first attempt. Let us see if he can

:58:28.:58:34.

do it. He has knocked it off again. This is going to be interesting.

:58:34.:58:38.

Only two athletes from the first full of high jumper managed to

:58:38.:58:44.

clear 2.28. We only have a couple of guys from this pool who have

:58:44.:58:51.

cleared it. -- the first pole of high jump. Luckily, Robbie Grabarz

:58:51.:59:00.

got a first-time clearance at the other one. We have been talking

:59:00.:59:05.

about the one-day pentathlon. This is the situation going into the

:59:05.:59:12.

last event, BA andm. The French athlete who won a year ago has a

:59:12.:59:20.

commanding lead. -- 800m. Then you have the 18-year-old from Belgium.

:59:20.:59:30.
:59:30.:59:48.

She is in third place. It is game is one of the stars to go -- one of

:59:48.:59:53.

the stars of the event. She is in second place. There is the gold,

:59:53.:00:01.

the number one, the French athlete. Interestingly, two years ago, she

:00:01.:00:11.
:00:11.:00:14.

was A303 points down -- she was 83 points down. That was about seven

:00:14.:00:20.

seconds. She's great them back and became the champion. She has the

:00:20.:00:30.
:00:30.:00:47.

advantage of being ahead this time. group of athletes. There is the

:00:47.:00:57.
:00:57.:01:04.

stopwatch is, at the moment, the French athlete has seven seconds on

:01:04.:01:11.

that the athlete in second place. She has two seconds on the athlete

:01:11.:01:17.

in third place. But the Belgian is only one point ahead of fourth-

:01:17.:01:27.
:01:27.:01:29.

placed. She is lying in third place. She is one of the slowest 800m

:01:29.:01:34.

runners in the field. She could lose bronze. If she did get close

:01:34.:01:41.

to her best, she could be in with a chance of breaking or equalling her

:01:41.:01:51.
:01:51.:02:06.

record. At the moment, it is seconds on the lead applet. --

:02:06.:02:16.
:02:16.:02:18.

athlete. The champion is being overtaken. No sign of the Belgian

:02:18.:02:23.

making her way back in the field at the moment. It looks as if the

:02:23.:02:28.

Belgian will lose out on a medal. It was a different situation we had

:02:28.:02:38.
:02:38.:02:48.

it. She needs to pull as much distance away from Nana Djimou and

:02:48.:02:54.

Nana Djimou has spotted it. She saw the red and green of bowler Bruce

:02:54.:03:00.

getting away down the back straight, she has responded a bit. But a

:03:00.:03:06.

tremendous, but a performer in Yana Maksimava. She will win the silver

:03:06.:03:16.
:03:16.:03:21.

medal. It looks like Nana Djimou crossing the line,. Will have to

:03:21.:03:25.

wait until the times have been converted into points but it looks

:03:25.:03:33.

like Nana Djimou has retained her title I have just been handed a

:03:33.:03:38.

note to say the gap was about 5.9 seconds. It was not quite enough.

:03:38.:03:43.

Nana Djimou leaving it until very late before she did put on a bit of

:03:43.:03:48.

a sprint. There she is, she will not know she has retained her title

:03:48.:03:53.

yet. It has not come up on the scoreboard but Yana Maksimava's

:03:53.:04:01.

time has, and officially Nana Djimou is in a position to do the

:04:02.:04:11.
:04:12.:04:12.

arithmetic. There we are, there is the winner of the 800m but not the

:04:12.:04:21.

pentathlon overall champion. We will clear that up a bit later on.

:04:21.:04:26.

Still pole vault qualifying is going on, Holly Bleasdale has an

:04:26.:04:32.

opportunity to nail on her place in the final. 4.56 and it looked very

:04:32.:04:38.

easy. I have to say, that looked easier than her for 0.46 that she

:04:38.:04:42.

got at the second attempt a little earlier on. But not good. -- than

:04:42.:04:50.

her for 0.46. That will boost their confidence for the final. -- 4.46.

:04:50.:05:00.
:05:00.:05:00.

Holly in the final tomorrow. Yamile Aldama in 6th place in the third

:05:00.:05:08.

round, her season's best, 13.92, then a foul. A couple of extra

:05:08.:05:13.

centimetres would not go amiss. And that is very tight indeed. I could

:05:13.:05:18.

not quite see where the mark was. It might be bang on the qualifying

:05:18.:05:23.

line. If it is, she has gone over 40 metres for the first time this

:05:23.:05:32.

season. -- 14 metres. It was a foul. A big foul as well. But in La

:05:32.:05:36.

Aldama still in 6th place, a chance of making it through to the final -

:05:36.:05:44.

- but he merely Aldama -- Yamile Aldama. This is it for Robbie

:05:44.:05:52.

Grabarz. If they have to go back to 2.23 to decide who makes it through

:05:52.:05:56.

to the final, will end up with more than eight athlete, but Robbie

:05:56.:06:02.

could do with this one. Oh, No. He looked so, so confident that

:06:02.:06:09.

earlier heights. He must have thought everything was on song. He

:06:09.:06:16.

did not look comfortable. Mind you, only three athletes have cleared

:06:16.:06:20.

that height in this pool which means that five in total have

:06:20.:06:24.

cleared it. We will see the calculators out to see who will

:06:24.:06:33.

make it through to the final, let's hope Robbie is one of them. We saw

:06:33.:06:36.

Holly Bleasdale comfortably over that height and then she spoke to

:06:36.:06:39.

Phil Jones. PHIL JONES: That was a tremendous

:06:39.:06:45.

clearance to get through with consummate ease which is what we

:06:45.:06:50.

expect of you. Always tricky to negotiate. Berry nervous coming

:06:50.:06:55.

into it, lot at stake and with 20 goals out there, lots of waiting

:06:55.:07:01.

around and Indian warm-up as well. I handled it pretty well -- and in

:07:01.:07:05.

the warm-up as well. I am really happy that it went very well, I

:07:06.:07:10.

could not have asked for much more. You have not unclear over your

:07:10.:07:16.

first height, and then the long wait, is that difficult difficult -

:07:16.:07:20.

- you had not gone clear. So many girls in it and I needed to move up

:07:20.:07:26.

a pole. The pole was soft and I tried to wait 45 minutes, it was

:07:26.:07:31.

hard for me to stay focused and I was worrying about clearing my bath.

:07:31.:07:38.

I manage it well and I felt good at there -- clearing my bath. --

:07:38.:07:43.

clearing my bar. It Britishers were hard and with the last clearance,

:07:43.:07:47.

it does not take away these expectations -- it looks like it

:07:47.:07:52.

was really hard. I really want to come out and prove that I can be

:07:52.:07:55.

consistent and start winning medal at major championships and that is

:07:55.:08:01.

what I am in for tomorrow. It is another stepping stone. We wish you

:08:01.:08:11.
:08:11.:08:14.

another champion in the pentathlon, the same we had a few years ago,

:08:14.:08:18.

Nana Djimou has retained her title. I think everybody in the field and

:08:18.:08:21.

the crowd knew that because of the gap she had going into that last

:08:21.:08:28.

event. So Nana Djimou once again the multi- events champion, great

:08:28.:08:38.
:08:38.:08:39.

these championships, going to France. Where will the next two go

:08:39.:08:44.

to? We have got two 60m hurdles races. This is the line-up for the

:08:44.:08:54.
:08:54.:09:12.

bronze medallist last year, he can be very good but can be awful. Not

:09:12.:09:20.

very good out of the blocks. The Italian, a real surprise package,

:09:20.:09:24.

only 4th but won a big race in France last week and has shown form

:09:24.:09:31.

here. The German athlete, their champion, has a chance here of

:09:32.:09:38.

winning a medal. At the favourite though for the gold, the fastest

:09:38.:09:43.

man in Europe, joint fastest in the world this year, Sergey Shubenkov,

:09:43.:09:48.

the European outdoor champion now attempted to become the European

:09:48.:09:52.

indoor champion. Former world junior champion, actually beaten

:09:52.:09:57.

his team-mate earlier this year but most of the time, he plays second

:09:57.:10:03.

fiddle, and Konstantin Shabanov. Silver medal at the European Under

:10:03.:10:10.

23 championships, the Hungarian athlete, he is in the form of his

:10:10.:10:14.

life and in lane eight, out of the action in the middle lanes, he may

:10:14.:10:21.

well be the type of athlete who could sneak through and take a

:10:21.:10:31.
:10:31.:10:42.

medal. It will be a surprise if dominated for so many years and it

:10:42.:10:47.

is a geisha Bank of who is head and shoulders above the rest in terms

:10:47.:10:52.

of European -- European hurdling, and it is Sergey Shubenkov who is

:10:53.:11:02.
:11:03.:11:12.

left it late, very, very late and for the first time in his life goes

:11:12.:11:20.

under 7.5, 7.49, the winning time. Goodness me... Until the last few

:11:20.:11:27.

the last hurdle, just as enough. I think Martinot-Lagarde will get the

:11:46.:11:48.

bronze medal. But should -- Sergey Shubenkov has indeed added the

:11:48.:11:53.

indoor title to his repertoire. But it was close, Colin. Closer than we

:11:53.:11:58.

all would have thought. Especially when it is the Italian who comes

:11:58.:12:05.

through for the silver medal. Perhaps we were looking through to

:12:05.:12:13.

Martinot-Lagarde to push Sir Alicia Bragg of off. The important thing

:12:13.:12:17.

is to know what you're capable of, you very quickly know that he can

:12:17.:12:22.

still afford to push on, rely on a sprinting speed to get close to

those barriers and then say that he demonstrated that very well. A new

world League, 7.49. We said in the semi-final that nobody was in this

:12:36.:12:41.

race could go underneath 7.50, so we did not think he could be beaten

:12:41.:12:47.

and he had to work hard for this victory. But it is always about

:12:47.:12:55.

winning and he has done it. Well done. He said earlier on, Colin,

:12:55.:12:59.

when you ran that 7.52, it was easy. Nobody around him and that is

:13:00.:13:03.

almost better to come back when you did not get a good start, he knows

:13:04.:13:13.

he is down. The Italian is running the time of his life but he still

:13:13.:13:17.

concentrated and concentrated on his ability. He knows he has beaten

:13:17.:13:21.

everybody virtually in the world so when you light up in the final, you

:13:21.:13:24.

need to have that reels of confidence, it does not matter if

:13:24.:13:29.

you had a bad or great start. You still have the capabilities of

winning and taking victory when it matters and he has delivered well

they have claimed. What a performance by Nevin Yanit. She had

:17:25.:17:30.

a steady indoor season. Quiet early on. She has come into form at

:17:30.:17:34.

exactly the right time. She looked comfortable in the heats. She

:17:34.:17:38.

pushed herself into the semi-final, bringing a new personal best. In

:17:38.:17:48.
:17:48.:17:49.

this final, look at that, taking the gold medal. It may be cruel for

Ireland. The confirmation we are getting is she may have been run

out of things for the medals. would be a shame. She had a

:17:58.:18:02.

positive first part of the race. She does faded at the end when it

:18:02.:18:05.

really mattered. We have always said, the women's hurdles, you

:18:05.:18:09.

could throw a blanket over them. When you look at the results, you

:18:09.:18:15.

can say that. 7.89, a new national record. I just heard some screaming

:18:15.:18:21.

in the background. Screams of celebration from a run up a bossy

:18:31.:18:36.

and Alina Talay. We will get confirmation later. Rule for

Ireland. She has run a season's best. This is how she ran it.

Fourth-placed is the worst place to be. It is a very, very positive

top tier of hurdling. She just misses out. There is nothing to be

are in the cruellest position. Let us hear her thoughts. My sentiments

:19:29.:19:36.

exactly. The cruellest place. It was hundredth of a second. You said

:19:36.:19:41.

you were not going to do an indoor season and came so close. I have

:19:41.:19:46.

never been in a major final and not come in the top four. It is a bit

:19:46.:19:51.

cruel but it has happened before. This season I have had, it is good

:19:51.:19:55.

going. It is the quickest I have run indoors since I won indoors. I

:19:55.:20:01.

have to take the positive. By now, I am gutted. It is hard to talk to

:20:01.:20:05.

you at a time like this. You started so well in the race.

:20:05.:20:10.

started well. I felt like I fought hard the whole way. I have to take

:20:10.:20:14.

it, I will be said tonight but hopefully tomorrow will be better.

:20:14.:20:18.

If you're looking forward to the season to come, this is the best

:20:18.:20:22.

time you have done since to those and six. It bodes well. Yes. I

:20:23.:20:27.

wanted to give myself a chance to run really well. So I had to come

:20:27.:20:32.

here and do this. The preparation was tough but I did my best. I wish

:20:32.:20:36.

the figures had been -- I wish the other girls had been slower.

:20:36.:20:46.
:20:46.:20:59.

can be proud of yourself. Well done. That looks good. He has been

:20:59.:21:03.

knocking on the door for medals for some time now. Never managed to

secure one. World Championship finalist. A new personal best for

:21:13.:21:23.
:21:23.:21:28.

him. Second place. He has responded. He is going to be in the lead. He

:21:28.:21:35.

may well have extended that. Bosnia up against Serbia at the moment.

:21:35.:21:45.

Absolutely powers that shot put way beyond 20 metres. Good technician.

:21:45.:21:55.
:21:55.:21:55.

Very, very powerful. The best he has achieved this year. No more

:21:56.:22:02.

changes in it that shot put final. There is the result. A one of his

:22:02.:22:12.
:22:12.:22:15.

best performances ever, the leader. The Czech Republic got the bronze.

:22:15.:22:22.

Absolutely delighted. Serbia do not win it too many major medals.

:22:22.:22:25.

Especially not at international level. In this man, they have a

:22:25.:22:35.

real star. He won a bronze medal last year. This time it is gold. I

:22:35.:22:41.

am not sure he will be able to do a lap of honour, he is a big lad. He

:22:41.:22:45.

will be over the front pages of the newspapers in Serbia tomorrow. A

:22:45.:22:49.

bit -- a little replay of what happened. That was his winning

:22:49.:22:54.

growth. It was perfect as far as he was concerned. -- winning throw.

:22:54.:23:03.

That is the end of day two. Let us rub of the British performances.

:23:03.:23:10.

This was his clearance at 2.28 metres. It looked good early on.

:23:10.:23:18.

This clearance was also very good. This clearance was also very good.

:23:18.:23:23.

He will be disappointed. He spoke to Phil Jones afterwards.

:23:23.:23:33.

Tell me how that went. I have made the final, I just find out. I am

:23:33.:23:38.

surprised. It is a great track to jump on. I run to first. I have got

:23:38.:23:46.

to control a tomorrow in the final. It is all good, I just run too fast

:23:46.:23:51.

and ran out of room. I know what I have to do tomorrow. That is good

:23:51.:23:57.

to hear. You have to that clear in the first pool. A I realised the

:23:57.:24:02.

track was really quick coming in. The first bar is always hard. That

:24:02.:24:07.

is what made the final. I managed to keep on top of it. I got too

:24:07.:24:11.

excited coming into the next bar. I need to realise I don't need to try

:24:11.:24:16.

hard to clear hides like that. It is easy for me. I have learnt how

:24:16.:24:20.

to hide embedded is easy. -- Heights like that. I tried too hard

:24:20.:24:30.
:24:30.:24:30.

ms it up. Holly Bleasdale did the same. As long as you get it right

:24:30.:24:35.

ended up in the final, you can take care of it then. A I am really

:24:35.:24:40.

believed. I do not know what I would have done if I had not made

:24:40.:24:45.

the final. You can read those things. Good luck. Robbie Grabarz

:24:45.:24:50.

safely through to the final. It was also good news from the women's

:24:50.:24:58.

triple jump. This jump was measured at 13 metres. That was good enough

:24:58.:25:06.

to get her through to the final. We are getting towards the end of her

:25:06.:25:16.
:25:16.:25:16.

career. She has the pedigree. She career. She has the pedigree. She

:25:16.:25:26.
:25:26.:25:32.

has got a lovely languid style. is looking amazing at 40. She might

:25:32.:25:37.

find it hard jumping back-to-back. I am hoping she gets a good rest

:25:37.:25:43.

and comes out positively tomorrow. Let us talk about Robbie Grabarz.

:25:43.:25:51.

He was scared he would not make the final. He did. It did not work with

:25:51.:25:56.

his technique. Is about timing. Everything is. People suffer in the

:25:56.:26:01.

hurdles. You get extra strength and speed and you have got to learn to

:26:01.:26:05.

deal with it. What Robbie said to me, he said, clearly, I am learning

:26:05.:26:10.

about the event. He said, I do not have to tried so hard. He is

:26:10.:26:15.

recognising what his strength and weaknesses are. He will deal with

:26:15.:26:18.

them. A Holly Bleasdale made it them. A Holly Bleasdale made it

:26:18.:26:21.

through. She was the opposite from Robbie. She started badly and then

:26:21.:26:27.

found form. She said in her interview she started on a sock the

:26:27.:26:33.

pole. When she made the change, it helped. She got into her grave. --

:26:33.:26:40.

on a softer pole. She is safely through. -- she got into her grew.

:26:40.:26:45.

This medal is playing on her mind. She has jumped tide but she has to

:26:45.:26:49.

nail it tomorrow. The big shock of the day, Dwain Chambers did not

:26:49.:26:54.

make it through. He was disappointed in his does the book -

:26:54.:26:58.

- in his performance. I will be interested to find out the reason.

:26:58.:27:03.

Let us look at my map coverage for tomorrow. We will be back for a day

:27:03.:27:06.
