What a performance from Katarina Johnson Thompson. She wins the Gold

:00:50.:00:58.

Medal. Determined and fast. It is a new world indoor record! Christy

:00:59.:01:03.

storming through, and he gets the gold. On his way to gold, surely. He

:01:04.:01:13.

has won it all the way. A new world indoor record. She should have the

:01:14.:01:18.

class to bring this home for Great Britain. Sebastian Coe will have a

:01:19.:01:29.

remarkable record. Well done, Jason Gardner, four European indoor

:01:30.:01:36.

titles. She has done it. Bleasdale is the champion. Jackson wins it.

:01:37.:01:42.

The new European in. Sally Gunnell coming through for a brilliant

:01:43.:01:49.

victory. Richard Kilty is already moving away. Gold for Britain.

:01:50.:01:55.

Bringing it home, Great Britain get the gold. Running towards his first

:01:56.:02:00.

title, it is gold for Mo Farah of Great Britain. Hello, good afternoon

:02:01.:02:09.

and welcome to the European Indoor Championships from the Serbian

:02:10.:02:13.

capital, Belgrade. The 14th running of these championships, and we got

:02:14.:02:17.

underway this morning. Three packed days of action from a place which

:02:18.:02:21.

knows its athletics pretty well and as you have just seen, a

:02:22.:02:25.

Championships in which Great Britain has a wonderful history of winning

:02:26.:02:30.

medals. It is a beautiful almost summer day, I hesitate to say is

:02:31.:02:35.

spring. It is edging towards 19 degrees. We are sitting warm inside.

:02:36.:02:41.

This is our home for the next three days. It is a little bit busy down

:02:42.:02:46.

there already. It holds 20,000, apparently. There were not 20,000

:02:47.:02:50.

this morning but we're hoping it will fill up. The big hero here is

:02:51.:02:56.

in the long jump on Sunday. Maybe if she wins a Gold Medal we will hear

:02:57.:03:00.

the roof raised by what we hope will be a big crowd. As I said, we were

:03:01.:03:07.

on air this morning and you may have seen some of the action. Now on, we

:03:08.:03:13.

are on BBC Two this afternoon. Coverage of the main action starting

:03:14.:03:18.

at 3:30pm. This morning, we should have had the 60 metres hurdles for

:03:19.:03:23.

men. The first round was taken up so we will be catching up with that

:03:24.:03:27.

just after 4:30pm. That is what we are doing this afternoon. Tomorrow

:03:28.:03:36.

it is an early start. 8:30am. Another full day, with two sessions,

:03:37.:03:42.

live coverage through the weekend. We had plenty of talking points this

:03:43.:03:46.

morning. The usual way to get in touch if you want to join in. We had

:03:47.:03:50.

one or two interesting talking points and our team are with us

:03:51.:03:55.

again. Denise Lewis and Tony and Paula. We have 30 minutes, so we

:03:56.:04:00.

thought we would look back on the best action from this morning,

:04:01.:04:04.

starting with the 400 metres. Lina Nielsen was not here, but her twin

:04:05.:04:09.

and a leashed oil were representing us in the first round.

:04:10.:04:30.

Nielsen will want to attack hard here. We have talked about the track

:04:31.:04:38.

that she will have to content with. Out in lane six, every opportunity

:04:39.:04:45.

to do so. Nielsen, as she goes around the bend will need to pick it

:04:46.:04:51.

up. She has every chance of leading this. Nielsen comes across, a good

:04:52.:05:00.

piece of mature running. Much slower than in Birmingham. Look at her

:05:01.:05:03.

stretching down the back straight, putting pressure on the others. The

:05:04.:05:09.

Spanish athlete trying to move into second, but it is Nielsen, 20 years

:05:10.:05:13.

old from Great Britain, stretching away from the field. The top two

:05:14.:05:18.

will qualify. She is looking good and strong, with daylight between

:05:19.:05:22.

her and the rest. There is a good scrap for second. That was a good

:05:23.:05:29.

piece of mature running from the youngster. She got out nice and

:05:30.:05:33.

steady, didn't panic on the first lap. She had a good lane draw and

:05:34.:05:38.

could watch everybody else. She moved across nicely and put the

:05:39.:05:42.

pressure on down the back straight. She got out in front and was able to

:05:43.:05:47.

cruise over the last 30 or 40 metres. Well done. At this event is

:05:48.:05:54.

tinged with disappointment because your twin sister had to pull out.

:05:55.:05:59.

How is she and how has it affected you? We were both gutted. There were

:06:00.:06:06.

tears on Wednesday. She realised she might have to pull out. We had hope

:06:07.:06:10.

until last night and last night she decided to pull out because the rest

:06:11.:06:14.

of the year is really important. She is gutted but I am flying the flag

:06:15.:06:20.

for both of us. You did well there. We wish you well for the semifinals

:06:21.:06:22.

later. A real shame for her sister, but

:06:23.:06:35.

that was a wonderful performance and winning your heat guarantees a good

:06:36.:06:37.

lane in the semifinals later today. Away this time, and Doyle on the far

:06:38.:07:08.

outside with the Polish athlete in lane five. Pretty even at the

:07:09.:07:13.

moment. Who will get the lead at the break, often so important? The

:07:14.:07:20.

Polish athlete with a little advantage as the bend unravels.

:07:21.:07:25.

Doyle accelerates a little and takes the lead. Doyle is out in front. Two

:07:26.:07:35.

go through automatically and six fastest losers. Doyle is in pole

:07:36.:07:44.

position at the moment. She is not able to break away at the moment,

:07:45.:07:48.

but in control. She knows where she is. She opens up just a couple of

:07:49.:07:53.

metres, and she will take the victory and go through. She

:07:54.:08:04.

looked comfortable enough, Doyle, in going through. Yes, it is

:08:05.:08:15.

interesting. It looked like a good controlled run, and then you see the

:08:16.:08:20.

clock stops at 53.2 eight. Maybe the track is a little slow and bouncy.

:08:21.:08:27.

Colin has something to say. The inside lane seems very tight so a

:08:28.:08:30.

lot of the time cannot generate enough speed so they are checking

:08:31.:08:35.

their stride more than normal. That is causing problems with the time.

:08:36.:08:40.

You can imagine when you are fatigued, the stride length really

:08:41.:08:45.

shortens. It is more staccato. That is why the times could be a little

:08:46.:08:51.

slow. Not every indoor track is the same, not only in terms of surface,

:08:52.:08:56.

but in terms of how tight it is. That inside lane is particularly

:08:57.:09:01.

tight, so the times are down. But she looked good. It is controlled.

:09:02.:09:07.

No one really likes the heats, and you have to run hard, but that

:09:08.:09:14.

looked a comfortable run. What are the preparations between now and the

:09:15.:09:19.

semifinal? Recover, get some food, a mass side, hopefully some sleep, and

:09:20.:09:24.

come back later. Let me ask you about coming in third on the

:09:25.:09:28.

European list. Does it have any bearing at an event like this? Not

:09:29.:09:35.

really. In doors, it is so tactical, sometimes times don't matter, it is

:09:36.:09:38.

about running the right race at the right time. I have been used to the

:09:39.:09:44.

pressure, so it feels a bit nicer coming in ranked number three. Well

:09:45.:09:46.

done this morning. Those two safely through. Just to

:09:47.:10:08.

say, in the arena behind us, the opening ceremony is getting

:10:09.:10:14.

underway. The President of the European athletics Association is up

:10:15.:10:18.

on the podium and the speeches are underway. We will be respectful but

:10:19.:10:21.

we will carry on talking about this morning. Denise, first of all, she

:10:22.:10:27.

is a great talent but sometimes youngsters when they come, first

:10:28.:10:31.

time in the spotlight they can not necessarily freeze but they can

:10:32.:10:35.

struggle. She ran so sure Ridley this morning. Didn't she just? I

:10:36.:10:41.

loved particularly coming off the first bend, we have seen a lot of

:10:42.:10:46.

hustle and bustle, but she was in control, knew exactly what she

:10:47.:10:49.

needed to do, be out in front at the bell. That is crucial to a good 400

:10:50.:10:55.

metres. She has done really well. She has come off two personal bests,

:10:56.:10:59.

socially is losing in confidence and that was demonstrated today. Doyle,

:11:00.:11:05.

other end of the scale in terms of experience. I thought she looked

:11:06.:11:11.

good. She looked as if she ran the first 150 metres controlled and then

:11:12.:11:14.

had a look inside and accelerated down the hill and into the break and

:11:15.:11:18.

got to the bell first, as you should do. It looked like a simple tick box

:11:19.:11:25.

exercise, win the heat, get through and get the lane draw for the semis.

:11:26.:11:31.

By contrast, in the middle there was another heat which was the opposite.

:11:32.:11:36.

The drawers, as ever in the first round, there was one tough heat and

:11:37.:11:40.

a little bit of argy-bargy. That is a look. It involved the French

:11:41.:11:48.

athlete and the athlete from the Czech Republic. At the end of the

:11:49.:11:53.

first lap they were breaking. I thought she gave her a shoulder

:11:54.:11:57.

charge. She stood on the curb and went crashing down. She was

:11:58.:12:04.

originally disqualified. We can't really see from that angle.

:12:05.:12:09.

Beginning with you, Denise, she has been reinstated. Comment on that. It

:12:10.:12:15.

was tough. It was almost a concertina effect. One into the

:12:16.:12:22.

other, into the other. I thought she came in quite hard, quite severely.

:12:23.:12:25.

We know there can be a lot of pushing at that point but I think it

:12:26.:12:30.

was right that she was disqualified. To be reinstated is a big call.

:12:31.:12:39.

At that point, she should have eased back because there was no room. She

:12:40.:12:54.

pushed out of the way. The French appealed and she has been

:12:55.:12:58.

reinstated. We know that the French do like to appeal. I know she is one

:12:59.:13:02.

of the favourites, let's put it that way. They know there is a strong

:13:03.:13:08.

medal case for her. It is tough, but she is in. What can we do? She is in

:13:09.:13:15.

the same semifinal as Nielsen, and she has been given a good lane,

:13:16.:13:18.

socially is very lucky, if you ask me. We look forward to the

:13:19.:13:24.

semifinals. Paula, we are going to look at our only representative in

:13:25.:13:26.

the women's 800 metres this morning. The Ukrainian in lane five will be

:13:27.:13:58.

the big threat. The top two go through so it is not easy but she

:13:59.:14:03.

should be OK, Paula. She is wanting to control this, which is not bad.

:14:04.:14:07.

She talked about wanting a good rhythm. Yes, even if it was slowly

:14:08.:14:12.

she wanted to be at the front, out of trouble and able to respond as

:14:13.:14:16.

the danger comes round. The danger is sitting right on her shoulder

:14:17.:14:23.

now. As we said earlier, that time in Birmingham did put her confidence

:14:24.:14:26.

where it should have been from the training. Frustration was starting

:14:27.:14:31.

to come in because she was not seeing the training translate into

:14:32.:14:34.

racing. Hopefully she will move on with that here. A nice, steady pace,

:14:35.:14:40.

just under 30 seconds or the first 200 metres. It looks to have settled

:14:41.:14:47.

down a bit slower than that. At 400, probably around 61. A bit slower

:14:48.:14:52.

than that. She is where she wants to be. She is in control. What she now

:14:53.:14:58.

needs to do is to start to stretch them a little bit, not get surprised

:14:59.:15:04.

by anybody. Exactly. She needs to be ready because the danger will

:15:05.:15:07.

Cumbrae fast and she needs to be able to respond. Sometimes when you

:15:08.:15:12.

go out and the pace slows, you can settle into the river man find it

:15:13.:15:17.

hard to raise the pace and react as the girls come past. She left the

:15:18.:15:22.

gap on the inside. One or two of these are 400 specialists. She needs

:15:23.:15:28.

to be careful. She is just stretching out at the front. The

:15:29.:15:33.

attack comes on the outside and she has to respond and hold the inside,

:15:34.:15:35.

and she does it well. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke has got to

:15:36.:15:46.

work to the line. Lyakhova might be run out of this here. One of the big

:15:47.:15:54.

favourites will not go through by rights. Velvere a surprise package

:15:55.:16:01.

there. She goes through with a very, very confident performance from

:16:02.:16:02.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke. It was one of those races where had

:16:03.:16:14.

it gone wrong, it was very slow, but she ran it perfectly well. She did.

:16:15.:16:18.

She looked nervous on the start line. I think that was a little bit

:16:19.:16:22.

reflected. She looked a bit heavy legged, as if she was burdened by

:16:23.:16:26.

that desire to make it through to the next round that. Will have done

:16:27.:16:29.

her a lot of good, how she controlled the race. The way she was

:16:30.:16:33.

almost expecting Lyakhova to challenge her. Lyakhova didn't look

:16:34.:16:37.

good at all and went out. Velvere was the close toast her. It was --

:16:38.:16:42.

closest to her. Even though slow, she was able to hold off the

:16:43.:16:45.

challenges. She's looking more confident. Without getting too far

:16:46.:16:52.

ahead of ourselves. Lyakhova is out, the number one ranked European

:16:53.:16:55.

athlete didn't turn up. She's got a great chance. She has. She looked

:16:56.:17:05.

stunny. -- stunning. She looked good. In terms of one to watch, Kyle

:17:06.:17:15.

Langford is one of our most talented youngsters. He gave us a fright in

:17:16.:17:18.

his qualifying round. This is Kyle before the race. Paula, we can talk

:17:19.:17:24.

through this here. He sometimes, you know, he's such a talent. He's got

:17:25.:17:28.

pace and so much ability, but he has to learn even in the heats of the

:17:29.:17:31.

European indoors, you've got to be on the case. He has to learn that he

:17:32.:17:36.

has to be able to think and process more than one thing happening around

:17:37.:17:41.

him and react to it quickly. Here he got himself into trouble so many

:17:42.:17:47.

times in this race. At the end, he was sprinting the last 100 metres.

:17:48.:17:53.

He just needs to be able to not rely on his talent. It's OK at European,

:17:54.:17:58.

first round he can rely on the talent to get him out of trouble. If

:17:59.:18:01.

he makes mistakes like this on a major championships, through the

:18:02.:18:04.

rounds, he's going to struggle to make it farther. He should push on

:18:05.:18:08.

here. This is where he loses his position. He's looking around, but

:18:09.:18:12.

they're all in front of him. Why look around. He should be looking to

:18:13.:18:16.

get into the right position to react. This is why the championships

:18:17.:18:20.

are so important for someone of his age to learn how to deal with this.

:18:21.:18:25.

This is a great finish, but the danger was already before, he should

:18:26.:18:28.

have been more in contention. Yeah, it's all about learning. I think

:18:29.:18:32.

that's why people around Kyle were so keen that he come to the

:18:33.:18:36.

championships, even though it wasn't in his original plan in. This

:18:37.:18:39.

situation, you learn that it's not just about time trials. It's not

:18:40.:18:42.

just going out and running UK records for 600 m, running well in

:18:43.:18:46.

Birmingham. It's about negotiating the rounds and being in the right

:18:47.:18:49.

places and making those decisions. He's just learning. It's probably

:18:50.:18:54.

the first championships he's come to indoors. He's stepped from juniors

:18:55.:19:01.

and miss aid year last year. It's a valid point. I hope he does learn.

:19:02.:19:05.

I've heard that, even in his interview afterwards, it was as

:19:06.:19:09.

though, what's wrong? What's the problem, I got through. But

:19:10.:19:13.

sometimes he needs to realise he needs to be better than that.

:19:14.:19:17.

Somebody who has learned from her experiences at the Indoor

:19:18.:19:19.

Championships going back to the Europeans and the worlds was Laura

:19:20.:19:24.

Muir. Laura this morning was on the beginning of a long journey this

:19:25.:19:29.

weekend. 45 laps of the track. Heats of the 3,000, heats of the 1500

:19:30.:19:33.

today. All she wanted to do was qualify this morning. She did that

:19:34.:19:38.

easily. She did. What she wanted to do was qualify as easily as

:19:39.:19:43.

possible, expend as little energy as possible. She was in the tougher

:19:44.:19:48.

heats. They were running quicker than maybe she could have got away

:19:49.:19:52.

with in the first heat. I don't think she looked like she expended a

:19:53.:19:56.

lot of energy out there. She looked controls and displayed, I think,

:19:57.:19:59.

she's learned a lot from those previous championships that we

:20:00.:20:02.

talked about, the ip doors and disappointments -- indoors and

:20:03.:20:12.

disappointments. She went out before and was in floods of tears but she's

:20:13.:20:17.

learned. The race today, she didn't enter into trying to qualify

:20:18.:20:21.

outright in one of those. She calculated even as closing the last

:20:22.:20:25.

100 metres that she didn't need to fight for fourth position. She was

:20:26.:20:28.

just looking at the clock and knew what she had to do. Hopefully she's

:20:29.:20:33.

gone away, rested, recovered, eaten something and comes back ready to

:20:34.:20:37.

get through the 1500 metres with the ease as she did in the rounds today.

:20:38.:20:41.

You and I were walking in this afternoon and one of the British

:20:42.:20:46.

fans said, is Laura Muir OK, she was fifth. Yeah, she's fine. She knew

:20:47.:20:53.

what she was doing. This is the battle for second, third, fourth and

:20:54.:20:58.

fifth. Top four through by rights. Laura going through as a fastest

:20:59.:21:02.

loser, but that was calculated that. Was two Scottish athletes through to

:21:03.:21:10.

the final on Sunday. The third of the Scottish athletes, Eilish

:21:11.:21:14.

McColgan, she was going in the first of the two heats. She's been in good

:21:15.:21:18.

shape. She's been suffering, we were told, with a cold coming into this.

:21:19.:21:21.

I thought she looked good. She looked really good. She has been in

:21:22.:21:26.

very good shape out year. She went to Doha at the beginning of the

:21:27.:21:30.

year, then in Kenya. Raced person pests on the roads, 10,000 metres.

:21:31.:21:34.

Then on shorter distances as well. Here I think she looked really good.

:21:35.:21:41.

Koster took the opportunity to stretch it out a bit. When Eilish

:21:42.:21:47.

McColgan needed to she wound up the finish and she reeled them in with

:21:48.:21:51.

ease. I think she didn't really show any ill effects of that cold. It was

:21:52.:21:56.

more adjusting, as she says, what did she call herself, a rather tall

:21:57.:22:00.

creature or something like that. That's exactly what she said. It's

:22:01.:22:05.

difficult when you have as long legs as she did and the stride, she has a

:22:06.:22:09.

wide arm carriage, and it reaches a long way. She takes up a lot of

:22:10.:22:15.

space. It's an adjustment getting used to running on the smaller 200m

:22:16.:22:20.

oval. She's not experienced by her own admission indoors. That race is

:22:21.:22:25.

a great prospect, Laura Muir, that final comes on Sunday. Three of them

:22:26.:22:31.

in it. In between Laura's got heats in about an hour or so for the 1500

:22:32.:22:37.

metres and then the 1500 metre final before she comes back for the 3,000

:22:38.:22:43.

final on Sunday. It's a big ask. That's reflected in the fact there

:22:44.:22:46.

were eight people originally declared in the 3,000 metres and

:22:47.:22:50.

1500. Only Laura has taken the decision to actually try that. The

:22:51.:22:54.

moment they announced there were heats for the 3,000 and 1500, that

:22:55.:22:59.

increases the demand on the athletes so much. With only being a three-day

:23:00.:23:03.

championships it makes it tough. That's what the other girls will be

:23:04.:23:06.

hoping for, the only way really I can see them being able to challenge

:23:07.:23:10.

Laura is if she's bitten off more than she can chew and she can't

:23:11.:23:16.

handle that. Eilish McColgan has a strong chance of neecking in with a

:23:17.:23:20.

medal. Steph as well. Can I ask a question, is it wise that she's gone

:23:21.:23:24.

for this double? She says she's going to do it in the summer, with

:23:25.:23:29.

the 15 and 5,000. She's in the shape of her life. I think she's setting

:23:30.:23:33.

challenges, I'm answering for her here. I think herself and her coach

:23:34.:23:37.

Andy Young think she's capable. She wouldn't do it if she didn't think

:23:38.:23:41.

she was going to win two gold medals. Doesn't that make this the

:23:42.:23:47.

dry run. Yes, it is a bit of a dry run. It's not the same, Paula would

:23:48.:23:53.

say. It's much easier in the summer to double up. Easier! She's a busy

:23:54.:24:00.

athlete. You two would argue it's the multieventers who are the

:24:01.:24:04.

busiest. Pentathlon takes place in day one. We have the Olympic

:24:05.:24:18.

heptathlon here. She brings through the trail legs and runs off it. You

:24:19.:24:22.

see some of the other girls put it down and balance off it. She's been

:24:23.:24:33.

really active. She opened up really with a 22 point improvements here.

:24:34.:24:39.

That's a great start. In the high jump, her coach was saying that he

:24:40.:24:43.

hadn't done a lot of high jump. It looked rusty. She's rotating on the

:24:44.:24:49.

floor, shoulder goes in. Her clearance was a bit ragged, still

:24:50.:24:54.

196, fantastic. A bit shaky in the shot. The first round want

:24:55.:24:58.

particularly brilliant. Then she responded with a throw over 15

:24:59.:25:02.

metres. I think overall, based on her personal best, she's probably

:25:03.:25:06.

about 120 points ahead of schedule than before. That means she's into

:25:07.:25:15.

4,900, 4,960, if she goes a bit better in the long jump and the 800,

:25:16.:25:18.

the world record is on. Absolutely, she's very good. She's a tall girl.

:25:19.:25:29.

Great high jumper. It's wise that she doesn't do too much jumping in

:25:30.:25:34.

training. She doesn't need to. On the day, she's a two metre jumper if

:25:35.:25:40.

she can nail it. She's clearly got stronger. What's interesting, being

:25:41.:25:45.

fortunate enough to be in the infield, she walks around, she knows

:25:46.:25:48.

the business and everybody realises who the top dog is in the field now.

:25:49.:25:52.

I think the other thing is because she's so much better, you're out in

:25:53.:25:56.

front, you get to relax and you just do your thing, whereas everybody

:25:57.:25:59.

else is tuftling for silver and bronze behind you. It will be

:26:00.:26:02.

interesting to see. Talking of which, I'm not sure who top dog is

:26:03.:26:07.

here, I'm going to award gold, silver and bronze already... No I'm

:26:08.:26:12.

not! These are the meldals. They're quite chunky. They are. Serious

:26:13.:26:17.

piece of hardware. Very nice. Five of them on offer today, including

:26:18.:26:22.

that pentathlon. Thiam favourite for that. What we did before we came on

:26:23.:26:28.

air, we asked the guys, I joined in, let's have a prediction contest

:26:29.:26:32.

across the weekend. Here's what they've gone for: I like that you've

:26:33.:26:40.

gone five. Ambitious. I'm a Sunderland supporter. I've been

:26:41.:26:44.

miserable all year. I'm being positive here. Yeah, you know, seven

:26:45.:26:53.

bronzes Toni. Yeah. Yeah? Yeah. I wanted to go 13 in total. Can you

:26:54.:26:59.

not add up then! No, I thought be conservative. I remember Paula and I

:27:00.:27:04.

did a prediction once and we were so ambitious. Things do happen, it's

:27:05.:27:09.

sport. Three, we could actually squeeze four golds. Toni is right.

:27:10.:27:15.

Can I pressure you into, I'm giving Laura Muir two gold medals, I think

:27:16.:27:24.

she with win two. I'd like to see Andy come away with something in the

:27:25.:27:28.

60 hurdles. He's world lead. Into a lovely run of form at the moment.

:27:29.:27:32.

He's going to have serious competition with the French

:27:33.:27:36.

hurdlers. But he's looking good. Toni's gone for volume. Denise and

:27:37.:27:41.

Paula for quality. I've hit the middle of the road. This is the

:27:42.:27:45.

Europeans. We have a lot of people ranked highly. It's time toe just do

:27:46.:27:50.

what the -- to do what you do on the ranking list, you have a right to

:27:51.:27:54.

win medals, so take them. If we are going to win the meldals, there's a

:27:55.:27:58.

lot of work to be done. Here's what's on offer tonight:

:27:59.:28:32.

Straight out there now with Andrew Cotter and Colin Jackson.

:28:33.:28:40.

First semifinal of the women's 60 metres hurdles. They are lining up.

:28:41.:28:55.

Harala of Finland. Loncarek is the 15-times Croatian champion, eight

:28:56.:29:16.

times indoors. Yeni N'Gbakoto of the Netherlands. Has run 8. 03 this

:29:17.:29:25.

season. Four go through to straight semifinals.

:29:26.:29:30.

Good Dutch team here for these championships. Plotitsyna, the

:29:31.:29:35.

Ukrainian athlete, eight seconds dead in the heat. Ukrainian indoor

:29:36.:29:40.

champion this year. Finished strongly in her heat. The defending

:29:41.:29:48.

European champion, Talay. Took the title in Prague a couple of years

:29:49.:29:51.

ago. Bronze at the worlds as well, indoors and out. This is perhaps the

:29:52.:30:02.

third of the Germans, Lobe, she was third at the German indoors. Hope it

:30:03.:30:13.

doesn't end here for Kallur, this is her final competition. She retires

:30:14.:30:17.

after this. You want her to make it to the final for all she's given to

:30:18.:30:20.

the sport. It's a rough time she's had with injuries throughout the

:30:21.:30:24.

years as well. She's 36 now. Still the world indoor record holder. Er,

:30:25.:30:28.

said -- holder, set in 2008. European junior silver-medallist

:30:29.:30:44.

couple of years ago, the Hungarian athlete.

:30:45.:31:31.

Plotitsyna, alongside Susanna Kallur.

:31:32.:31:42.

Susanna Kallur will have her final to say farewell. Alina Talay, again,

:31:43.:31:49.

looking strong. And the Germans to come. With Pedersen as well. They

:31:50.:32:01.

will be taking note of Alina Talay and her efforts because she looked

:32:02.:32:05.

impressive. It was very good running. Different to the heats,

:32:06.:32:10.

where I felt she was under control and ran very sprightly to qualify

:32:11.:32:14.

well. Now she has gone over one metre faster in this first

:32:15.:32:19.

semifinal. You can see she is pleased with that performance as

:32:20.:32:24.

well. Not out of the blocks as sharp. But she keeps her form and

:32:25.:32:31.

runs off the barriers well, strong. And I think that's comfortable. I

:32:32.:32:35.

think she has half a yard left in her. That was a good time looking

:32:36.:32:41.

fairly comfortable. She had good starters alongside her. Perhaps that

:32:42.:32:46.

would have shocked her, how fast the Ukrainian got out in front

:32:47.:32:49.

straightaway. But she kept cool and worked hard of each of the barriers.

:32:50.:32:54.

There was no letup in between, exactly what you want to do. If you

:32:55.:32:58.

are going to cruise, cruise when there is nothing in the way.

:32:59.:33:04.

Plotitsyna was on a personal best, so a good run by her. It is going to

:33:05.:33:12.

be a good scrap with the Germans in full flight. Susanna Kallur, and not

:33:13.:33:25.

sure she made it. Four qualify, socially does go through. -- so she

:33:26.:33:38.

does go through. The final is 7pm in the UK.

:33:39.:33:40.

This is something you do not often see, the pole vault warming up and

:33:41.:33:48.

that happened. Not nice for him. The poll was at full bend and snapped

:33:49.:33:54.

into four or five pieces. I think he was relatively unhurt. He did seek

:33:55.:33:58.

medical attention. More of a shock to the system. You could not help

:33:59.:34:02.

noticing that the event favourite and his team-mate, the Polish

:34:03.:34:08.

athletes, were laughing. I think some of that is out of nerves. It is

:34:09.:34:11.

something that all pole vault 's dread. Look at that, at its full

:34:12.:34:20.

tension. Real questions for the German. He will have to gather

:34:21.:34:25.

himself. It is a nasty gash to his knee and his hand. He will have

:34:26.:34:30.

other polls in his bag, but he will have to muster some optimism for his

:34:31.:34:42.

opening attempts. The Olympic champion from Rio, as expected, out

:34:43.:34:46.

in front, some 257 points ahead of the best of the rest in Europe.

:34:47.:34:56.

Ivona Dadic from Austria, a personal best. Murmurs of world records for

:34:57.:35:03.

the Olympic champion. There she is, getting ready for the long jump, the

:35:04.:35:11.

penultimate event in the five. As expected, she is dominant,

:35:12.:35:14.

unchallenged on a bit of a procession for gold, it would seem.

:35:15.:35:26.

The long jump is about to start. As we wait for the second semifinal of

:35:27.:35:30.

the women's 60 metres hurdles, to confirm the results of the first. A

:35:31.:35:33.

personal best for Plotitsyna. Well, these semifinals really are

:35:34.:35:53.

putting them to the test, because this one has the two quickest up

:35:54.:35:57.

until we came to these championships, the two Germans,

:35:58.:36:00.

drawn with each other in lanes three and five. Isabelle Pedersen, who won

:36:01.:36:11.

this morning, is between them. Lots to watch out for, but the middle

:36:12.:36:17.

lanes... Four will go through, so you would probably think those four

:36:18.:36:23.

should. No fastest losers. Pedersen was not so good out of the blocks

:36:24.:36:26.

this morning but looked smooth after that. .Gov itch, she is having such

:36:27.:36:30.

a great season. I would not expect either of the

:36:31.:37:23.

inside lanes, unless we have more false starts, as in the first round

:37:24.:37:31.

this morning. I am tempting fate. And now, some real challengers from

:37:32.:37:35.

her own country for Cindy Roleder. She is in lane three. Then the

:37:36.:37:41.

Norwegian, Isabelle Pedersen, former world junior champion. He called her

:37:42.:37:45.

personal best outdoors last year with 12.8 six. 7.98 already this

:37:46.:37:52.

year. She was eight seconds exactly in qualifying this morning. Pamela

:37:53.:38:02.

Dutkiewicz, this is an ideal event for her. She is a good starter. Who

:38:03.:38:09.

knows, come the final, that could be important. A really good

:38:10.:38:19.

heptathlete, the Dutch athlete. And a new personal best in qualifying.

:38:20.:38:26.

We talked about false starts and Herman went through because there

:38:27.:38:29.

were four people disqualified in her heat. World junior champion. 19

:38:30.:38:33.

years old. Those four lanes in the middle. They

:38:34.:38:57.

will be the ones who will think, no problems here. Just get through, get

:38:58.:39:00.

this semifinal out of the way. The final, right at the end of the

:39:01.:39:17.

evening, just before 8pm here. Pamela Dutkiewicz got a good start

:39:18.:39:38.

again. Cindy Roleder has work to do. But these four are pulling away and

:39:39.:39:44.

it is Cindy Roleder who wins. I am not sure Pamela Dutkiewicz was

:39:45.:39:49.

really going flat out all the way. She got a decent start and Cindy

:39:50.:39:57.

Roleder was also out well. That went with the script pretty much, didn't

:39:58.:40:02.

it? I was studying hard, watching how these women would approach the

:40:03.:40:08.

race. I reckon probably four of the top five in the final word in this

:40:09.:40:13.

semifinal. When you talk about imbalance in the semifinals, that is

:40:14.:40:16.

the luck of the draw and that is what happens at major championships.

:40:17.:40:20.

Those German athletes will be there or thereabouts. Cindy Roleder did

:40:21.:40:27.

not get the sharpest start but she stayed cool, a good, clear head. I

:40:28.:40:32.

is in front, focused well on every barrier to make sure there were no

:40:33.:40:38.

respect -- no mistakes. She did that very well. Watch her in the final.

:40:39.:40:44.

Do not write her off from running a world's best. It was a really weak

:40:45.:40:49.

first stride. She nearly just stepped out of the block, the

:40:50.:40:52.

German. Once she got into the groove, she is a real danger. That

:40:53.:40:57.

final will be exciting. It could be a blanket finish. Are you going to

:40:58.:41:04.

call a one, two for Germany? I can tell you are looking forward to it

:41:05.:41:07.

and I am pretty sure you are looking forward to the men as well. They are

:41:08.:41:14.

effectively semifinals. Round one is coming up but they did not have a

:41:15.:41:17.

round this morning, so it moved straight through. We will speak to

:41:18.:41:21.

Andy Pozzi in a moment. He is running so consistently well,

:41:22.:41:33.

so consistently quickly, time and time again, and he destroyed the

:41:34.:41:41.

field. It has gone from strength to strength. I started with my quickest

:41:42.:41:45.

ever season opener, close to my personal best, and I was expecting

:41:46.:41:50.

it to build slowly. In the next race, it took one tenth of my PB. It

:41:51.:41:55.

took on another level and other -- I had some good wins against good

:41:56.:42:01.

competition. Describe what it is like when you were not able to put

:42:02.:42:04.

in the hurdling work last year, and this year you have. It is just

:42:05.:42:11.

consistency, being healthy for a long time and coming from a better

:42:12.:42:18.

base. Pozzi was all over the place. The race was there for him, he had

:42:19.:42:22.

the speed but did not clear the barriers. I was disappointed with

:42:23.:42:28.

the way that the Olympics went. I came away in the weeks and months

:42:29.:42:33.

later with more context and I felt, if that is where we are with limited

:42:34.:42:37.

preparation, it bodes well for the future. 60 metres hurdles is very

:42:38.:42:43.

strong in Europe, so I am going into it knowing that you need to be the

:42:44.:42:47.

best in the world to be the best in Europe at the moment. There are a

:42:48.:42:52.

couple of non-Europeans running well, but typically the Europeans

:42:53.:42:56.

are great at hurdles. At the Olympics, two of three medals were

:42:57.:43:00.

from Europe. That brings the event on an means I am striving because

:43:01.:43:07.

the competition demands it. I have been senior and at a high level for

:43:08.:43:11.

five years and I have very few medals for it, with the amount of

:43:12.:43:15.

injury. Hopefully now is the time that will change and you will see me

:43:16.:43:20.

on the podium more. You are still only 24, we should remind ourselves,

:43:21.:43:28.

not past it. Yeah, I flew onto the scene at 19. With the interruptions,

:43:29.:43:32.

it feels like I am about 40 at times but I still have a long time ahead

:43:33.:43:40.

of me, so that is good. Andrew Pozzi sounding confident,

:43:41.:43:42.

just replacing the first barrier head of the first heat. Just two

:43:43.:43:47.

races required for whoever should take this title, because there are

:43:48.:43:55.

exactly 24 men declared. One more and they would have required a round

:43:56.:43:59.

this morning. But looking to go straight through to the final. The

:44:00.:44:03.

first of three semifinals, if you can have such things. Andrew Pozzi

:44:04.:44:07.

is in great shape, and Colin, we are starting to see him approaching his

:44:08.:44:12.

best because he has been clear of injuries. Yes, one of the most

:44:13.:44:18.

important things without letting X -- with athletics, if you can get a

:44:19.:44:22.

couple of years injury free and put in the work, you can learn your

:44:23.:44:26.

trade. The only time you can learn that is when you stay injury free,

:44:27.:44:30.

and Andrew has managed that so well this year. What a difference it has

:44:31.:44:34.

made with his performance, from someone who just makes finals, to a

:44:35.:44:40.

world leader. A long way clear of the rest at the moment in time is,

:44:41.:44:51.

certainly in Europe. 7.40 three. He comes in as the man to beat. That

:44:52.:44:53.

brings its own pressure, of course. Second at the French indoor

:44:54.:45:31.

Championships. Second behind his compatriot who goes in the third of

:45:32.:45:37.

these heats. 7.53 this season. In recent seasons, they have produced

:45:38.:45:47.

such strong hurdlers in France. From the Czech Republic, a former

:45:48.:45:52.

European champion. Alongside Andy Pozzi, twice forth at world indoor

:45:53.:45:55.

Championships, despite his injuries and problems. You saw what happened

:45:56.:46:04.

to him in Rio at the Olympics. All sorts of foot surgery. Six in five

:46:05.:46:10.

years. Clear of those problems now I'm running well. -- and running

:46:11.:46:19.

well. A better crowd this evening than in the morning and it will

:46:20.:46:23.

perhaps grow over the weekend. The venue holds 20,000.

:46:24.:46:51.

A good start by Andrew Pozzi, was it beyond a good start? He looked

:46:52.:46:59.

sharply out of the blocks, it was a late call back. We've had a few of

:47:00.:47:04.

those in these championships. Starts that have looked good but have come

:47:05.:47:10.

back. We're looking anxiously on Pozzi's behalf at the reaction times

:47:11.:47:14.

on the board. Anything below a tenth of a second. Colin Jackson holding

:47:15.:47:25.

his breath. It looked to be a good start for Andy Pozzi. It's difficult

:47:26.:47:29.

to see from here exactly who's moving. I'm waiting for the

:47:30.:47:33.

statistics. Pozzi was certainly first to rise. Who pushed on the

:47:34.:47:38.

blocks first. That's what the starter will be looking at. Still no

:47:39.:47:44.

times yet come up for us, for the reaction. Maybe we can get them now.

:47:45.:47:54.

Lane eight has been given the shepherds crook. Parakhonka. I'd

:47:55.:48:01.

like to see the replay again. It's pressure on the pads, though. So

:48:02.:48:08.

Parakhonka farewell. Adds to the tension. He knows he's

:48:09.:48:27.

good enough to win this title. But barriers literal and fig aTiff to

:48:28.:48:28.

overcome. -- figureative. First of three heats for a place in

:48:29.:48:50.

the final of the men's 60 m hurdles. Well that time... I was looking at

:48:51.:48:58.

Shamatryn alongside Pozzi. It certainly wasn't Pozzi that time.

:48:59.:49:02.

It's been a theme of this opening day, the number of false starts,

:49:03.:49:07.

Colin. We've had many, which is really unusual. We usually see more

:49:08.:49:12.

false starts when there's a long gun hold between the set position and

:49:13.:49:16.

the actual bang of the gun. Here it seems to be quite quick. I don't see

:49:17.:49:22.

why they're so undisciplined. That's the only thing I can put it down to

:49:23.:49:28.

- lack of dis-Palestinian. I'm going tick -- discipline. I'm going to

:49:29.:49:36.

stick my hand in the air, here I am. It looked like Shamatryn alongside

:49:37.:49:41.

Pozzi. Again, can't find reaction times, let's look at the replay.

:49:42.:49:51.

Just a little rise from Shamatryn. Farewell Shamatryn. Right two gone.

:49:52.:50:00.

Reluctant to leave, but again, even on such a small margin, I think he

:50:01.:50:05.

probably knew. Yeah, you know, the key thing is once they put you in

:50:06.:50:09.

the set position, you've got to hold still. You cannot be moving your

:50:10.:50:13.

feet in the blocks. We saw then on our really slow motion there, that

:50:14.:50:16.

his feet were continuously moving on the block. He's being shown the

:50:17.:50:24.

reaction times. So back to the start we go. We've lost Parakhonka and

:50:25.:50:42.

Shamatryn. Down to Manga, Reynolds, Fofana, Bayer, Pozzi and Svoboda.

:50:43.:50:48.

Away they go now. A good start by Pozzi after all that. Moving along

:50:49.:50:58.

well. So too Manga. Pozzi takes it. Quick enough after all that, after

:50:59.:51:01.

the false starts and the pressure that will bring. That was a very

:51:02.:51:07.

impressive run from Andy Pozzi. Manga and Svoboda were battling for

:51:08.:51:11.

that second automatic qualification. No doubt about the winner, Andy

:51:12.:51:15.

Pozzi moves through. Most important thing is that you qualify and

:51:16.:51:19.

qualify well. He's done all the fast running this year. He's already put

:51:20.:51:23.

himself in the position of being world leader. Now he only has to

:51:24.:51:27.

focus on trying to take this title on. You've got to play a little bit

:51:28.:51:33.

safe. When you're as fast as Andy is, he can afford to have a little

:51:34.:51:37.

bit more caution in his performance. So it was good, it was nices, with

:51:38.:51:43.

all the things that were going on around him. He eased his way

:51:44.:51:48.

through. He could have caught that final barrier with his trail leg.

:51:49.:51:51.

Most important thing is that you get through well. Out of the blocks,

:51:52.:51:56.

nice, sound. Clattered that barrier there. Moving through the field.

:51:57.:52:02.

Clips that. No worries, he's through. Right now he's with Phil.

:52:03.:52:09.

Thanks a lot. Andrew, a nervious start there, two false starts, how

:52:10.:52:13.

do you keep your concentration that n those situations? It's not the

:52:14.:52:17.

first time we've had that this season. It's about focussing on what

:52:18.:52:23.

you're doing. I'm happy to callify after a couple of false starts. You

:52:24.:52:28.

come straight into the semis hows that for the mind set? It was a

:52:29.:52:31.

messy race but halfway through I knew I was coming clear and should

:52:32.:52:35.

have finished stronger. I will be ready for the final. The business

:52:36.:52:39.

end now, high hopes for you. But you have high hopes of yourself. You put

:52:40.:52:44.

no more pressure on yourself than the rest of us do. I'm here for the

:52:45.:52:47.

best performance of the season. I go for that later. We wish you well for

:52:48.:52:53.

the final. Cheers. Svoboda alongside Pozzi will have to

:52:54.:52:57.

see if he goes through as one of the two fastest loser. 7. 52 for Andy

:52:58.:53:06.

Pozzi. Only Legarde and Ortega have run more quickly than that this

:53:07.:53:10.

season. Pozzi has run 7. 43. That clip of the final barrier and still

:53:11.:53:16.

with the 7. 52, it augers well for Andy Pozzi in the final, which takes

:53:17.:53:30.

place #. -- at 7. 10 UK time. Nafissatou Thiam takes the runway in

:53:31.:53:34.

the long jump. This is the fourth event. Way out in front as we've

:53:35.:53:37.

been saying. Has been brilliant so far. Three events this morning.

:53:38.:53:43.

Would have taken some lunch, a bit a rest and this first event of this

:53:44.:53:47.

afternoon. Looks as though she's gone beyond six metres for sure. Has

:53:48.:53:53.

a best in excess of 6. 50. If she can get out there, we are talking

:53:54.:53:58.

world record is in range. Behind the board somewhat. Wherever this is

:53:59.:54:05.

measured lots to add. It's 6. 23. A good start for Thiam. Two more jumps

:54:06.:54:07.

to go. This is Krizsan, in fourth place

:54:08.:54:19.

after three attempts. Looking to wake the legs up and get

:54:20.:54:30.

back into the competition after a couple of hours of rest. A busy

:54:31.:54:34.

morning, a unique day in having all five events within the space of one

:54:35.:54:45.

day. Krizsan looks athough she's around the six-metre mark. Sideways

:54:46.:54:49.

at the end there. They all know that Thiam's kind of got this in the bag.

:54:50.:54:55.

Every other athlete is battling for the minor medals, including Krizsan.

:54:56.:55:09.

Here's the Hungarian team-mate of Krizsan.

:55:10.:55:18.

Looked laboured, slightly on the approach there. Third overall after

:55:19.:55:25.

three events, as we come into this penultimate event, the long jump.

:55:26.:55:32.

Thinking of the pocket of a medal for sure -- possibility. A lot of

:55:33.:55:37.

the athletes look as though they're getting a safe jumping here,

:55:38.:55:41.

including Thiam. That looked fairly comfortable for her.

:55:42.:55:47.

Zsivoczky-Farkas around the six-metre mark. She's a 6. 30 jumper

:55:48.:55:55.

at her best. 6. 6.06, in third place.

:55:56.:56:01.

STUDIO: The next semifinal, well effectively a semifinal shortly. But

:56:02.:56:04.

these are the qualifiers for the final later tonight. This final, the

:56:05.:56:08.

women's hurdles final, before the men's. As Colin was saying, we had

:56:09.:56:13.

four of them in the same semi. That's shaping up to be a great

:56:14.:56:19.

contest. Kallur has made it, great to see that. In her retirement race,

:56:20.:56:27.

that will be. So David King has a tough one here, in lane three.

:56:28.:56:34.

Having a good season. New best of 7. 63. That puts him in Europe's top

:56:35.:56:44.

ten, including his team-mate, late withdrawal last week, leaving the

:56:45.:56:45.

way open a bit for Darien. At the Olympic Games, talking about

:56:46.:57:19.

Ortega, took the Silver Medal in Rio. Already in very good form this

:57:20.:57:25.

winter, 7. 48, only himself as Pozzi under 7. 5.

:57:26.:57:54.

Just to remind you, only the top two guaranteed. There are two fastest

:57:55.:57:59.

lieuers spots. -- losers spots. Ah, Baji. There hasn't been a long

:58:00.:58:16.

hold from the set. What on earth is he doing there? He's an experienced

:58:17.:58:20.

athlete. I don't have any sympathy for anybody who has a false start,

:58:21.:58:24.

you know that from me. Because it's all about just sitting there. You

:58:25.:58:28.

know what you need to do. You just react to the gun and that's it.

:58:29.:58:32.

There's not much else you need to focus on at that time. Doesn't

:58:33.:58:36.

matter how nervous you are, you've been here time and again. It should

:58:37.:58:40.

not happen to experienced athletes. He's in the form of his life. You

:58:41.:58:45.

can understand somebody thinking, if I don't get a good start, I have no

:58:46.:58:49.

chance. He's in great form. This is a packed semi, and that can add to

:58:50.:58:53.

the nerves. But not when you're experienced. Just sit in the blocks,

:58:54.:58:57.

you know the release of the gun and wait for it, look at that.

:58:58.:59:08.

So here we go again then. We had two disqualifications before getting

:59:09.:59:13.

under way in the first of the semifinals, well, it's the semifinal

:59:14.:59:17.

round, there are three heats technically. David King, coached by

:59:18.:59:27.

James Hillier, 22-year-old, 7. 63, second in the Birmingham Grand Prix.

:59:28.:59:34.

Ortega, Olympic Silver Medallist closest to the cam ra.

:59:35.:59:41.

-- camera. Cleanly away. The Pole got away. But look at this, Czykier

:59:42.:59:48.

leading. Trajkovic, what a race from him. That was a surprise. Ortega not

:59:49.:59:54.

the best out of the blocks. But, well, Baji must be looking at this

:59:55.:59:58.

and thinking goodness me. If you said, who's going to win this race,

:59:59.:00:01.

you wouldn't have picked hip. #7 -- him. An improving athlete, improving

:00:02.:00:06.

this season. But a new national record. He's just knocked a chunk

:00:07.:00:15.

off his personal best. Something, well, he's a Cypriot, but I have a

:00:16.:00:18.

funny feeling maybe he lives around here. There's some odd flags waving

:00:19.:00:22.

there. This is the way to qualify. Put

:00:23.:00:28.

everything behind you, come into a championships with everybody at

:00:29.:00:32.

zero. You just do what you can do. He produced another personal best

:00:33.:00:35.

and another national record. Lots of talent around him, but he produced.

:00:36.:00:44.

I am thankful to Andrew Cotter for pointing out that he was born in

:00:45.:00:50.

Serbia and his family moved to Cyprus when he was nine. That is his

:00:51.:00:54.

extended family to see him here today. He was hitting hurdles, too.

:00:55.:01:02.

Really good start, driving out. The two of them started well, he and the

:01:03.:01:15.

athlete next him, but he did. Ortega has that smooth Cuban style,

:01:16.:01:22.

literally flawless. Those two are through, and there is David. Let's

:01:23.:01:28.

see how he did. Lots of pressure around. He knows this is a

:01:29.:01:32.

high-quality race. He would have to be close to his best to qualify. No

:01:33.:01:41.

real mistakes. Just rattled a couple of barriers and the last one really

:01:42.:01:45.

through him, not allowing him to get into a strong sprinting posture. He

:01:46.:01:51.

can see why he is frustrated. He came to a major championships and

:01:52.:01:53.

wanted to do well. No fastest loser spot for David

:01:54.:02:13.

King, unfortunately. Straight into a semifinal round and

:02:14.:02:18.

that was a hot one. Yes, I drew the short straw. I felt all right, quite

:02:19.:02:24.

good. But everyone around me was better than me on the day. I am

:02:25.:02:29.

fairly happy with how I handled myself but obviously I would have

:02:30.:02:33.

liked to have made the final. I am quite happy with my season. How big

:02:34.:02:39.

a part of the learning curve is this kind of event? It is massive. My

:02:40.:02:45.

second ever senior championship. It is really good prep for outdoors. I

:02:46.:02:51.

am grateful to be here. I am glad to be running personal bests this

:02:52.:02:59.

season. Is there anything that has surprised you? You can't ever take

:03:00.:03:02.

for granted that you will get through. I came into the competition

:03:03.:03:07.

thinking I could have made the final, probably should have made the

:03:08.:03:10.

final, and you can't have that mindset. I guess respect the big

:03:11.:03:17.

names and just try to beat them next time. Thanks for talking to us. All

:03:18.:03:22.

the best going forward. Thanks very much.

:03:23.:03:31.

The pole vault Matt is out. We saw that accident earlier. The world

:03:32.:03:40.

champion from Germany at the centre of the screen. Eurovision style

:03:41.:03:51.

introductions for the pole vault. They are enjoying this, a bit of the

:03:52.:03:57.

spotlight. The Croatian athlete, 26 years old. He is in shape. He is in

:03:58.:04:06.

form. Stanley Joseph of France. 25 years of age. Other athletes of

:04:07.:04:25.

moat, the two Polish athletes. -- other athletes of moat.

:04:26.:04:35.

While those athletes are being introduced, back to the pentathlon,

:04:36.:04:44.

a fascinating pentathlon, turning into a bit of a one-woman show.

:04:45.:04:58.

That looks better. She gave herself a good chance of letting loose. 6.23

:04:59.:05:19.

in the first round. Gave her the opportunity to open up a little bit.

:05:20.:05:27.

6.37, it is an improvement. Let's have a look at this. Well, that is

:05:28.:05:33.

an improvement. World record possibly in sight, and one jump

:05:34.:05:34.

remaining. We saw this athlete from Hungary,

:05:35.:05:49.

the older of two Hungarian athletes competing. Sixth in the World

:05:50.:06:01.

Championships two years ago, eighth in the Olympics last year, so has

:06:02.:06:08.

been a bit part player in the past. 6.06, her opener but she has

:06:09.:06:17.

improved with 6.1 two. That is a season's best for her. The women's

:06:18.:06:21.

pentathlon is really hotting up, with just the 800 metres remaining.

:06:22.:06:31.

There is a possibility of a medal for her.

:06:32.:06:38.

It is a busy evening in Belgrade, it is all happening. The hurdlers have

:06:39.:06:44.

had to wait some time while the introduction to the pole vault was

:06:45.:06:48.

going on. David, ready opens up in this one.

:06:49.:07:04.

7.63 this season is a new personal best for David Omoregie. The Spanish

:07:05.:07:16.

athlete was once from Cuba but realised that support in Spain was

:07:17.:07:19.

better so transferred his allegiance.

:07:20.:07:29.

France could have three in the final.

:07:30.:07:53.

There is a lot happening this evening. The pole vault is to one

:07:54.:08:03.

side. It is crowded on the infield. David Omoregie in lane one. This is

:08:04.:08:08.

the third of three heats to go through to the final of the men's 60

:08:09.:08:12.

metres hurdles. David King has missed out. Andy Pozzi is proved.

:08:13.:08:19.

Two go through only automatically. Fastest losers at the moment start

:08:20.:08:24.

at 7.5 nine. David Omoregie might have been run

:08:25.:08:47.

out of that. We look for the time. If he was run out of it, I don't

:08:48.:08:52.

think it was fast enough for David Omoregie. He was just about there in

:08:53.:08:55.

second place but Martinson was finishing so strongly. It is going

:08:56.:09:05.

to be close but I think David Omoregie is not going to go through.

:09:06.:09:10.

I think you are right. Looking at that time. You are right. He has

:09:11.:09:19.

probably just missed out. He crashed into the first barrier. Did not set

:09:20.:09:23.

himself up well enough. It is crucial that you do not clatter the

:09:24.:09:28.

first hurdle because that is where you are just accelerating, and you

:09:29.:09:32.

want to be literally perfect, flawless. There was a stumble from

:09:33.:09:37.

Contreras on his first stride and that was his race over. Yes, it does

:09:38.:09:47.

not take much. It feels like the field is flying away from you after

:09:48.:09:51.

that. There is nothing you can do to get back into your rhythm and put

:09:52.:09:56.

yourself in a competitive position. David was out of the blocks, driving

:09:57.:10:01.

hard. He was a bit close, which was why he clattered the first hurdle.

:10:02.:10:11.

He drifted outside his lane. That is kind of normal in the hurdles. They

:10:12.:10:15.

will not worry too much about it. They will battle with you.

:10:16.:10:19.

Sometimes, when it can cause a clash of arms, but he was so far in front

:10:20.:10:25.

that he had no problems. Let's hear from him with Phil. Frustration must

:10:26.:10:32.

be the keyword. Clattering the first hurdle. It is a case of what might

:10:33.:10:40.

have been. I was disappointed. I have come through since trials and I

:10:41.:10:44.

felt I could make the final today. I am not sure what happened in the

:10:45.:10:50.

heats before. I will have to see, but not the best race.

:10:51.:10:55.

Unfortunately, there are two times quicker, so you will not make it

:10:56.:10:58.

through. What will you take from this experience, particularly the

:10:59.:11:02.

start of the race which Colin was talking about, hitting the first

:11:03.:11:10.

hurdle, losing momentum? Hitting the first hurdle can definitely give you

:11:11.:11:14.

a disadvantage. You need to accelerate and hitting that gave me

:11:15.:11:19.

a disadvantage. Disappointing, but overall indoors I have been running

:11:20.:11:25.

personal bests, so I can take that and prepare for the outdoor season.

:11:26.:11:28.

With -- we wish you well. Well, it is so busy. We have the

:11:29.:11:42.

hurdles being tidied up, shot put down there, long jump qualifying,

:11:43.:11:46.

pole vault, and now on the track, the 1500 metres. I am hoping that

:11:47.:11:52.

photographers have moved. You cannot sit in lane one! It is not the

:11:53.:11:58.

hurdles. Important, another race for Laura Muir, just 4.5 hours after her

:11:59.:12:02.

3000 metres heat this morning. This has plenty for her to think

:12:03.:12:16.

about. Very talented German athlete, a big name of the future. 20 years

:12:17.:12:22.

of age. She is a front runner, full of heart and ability. She can run

:12:23.:12:30.

800 as well. She ran a relay recently indoors. She is not slow

:12:31.:12:34.

either. Cross-country champion, and a real talent. She is up against

:12:35.:12:41.

Laura Muir. There is the local favourite, very popular on the

:12:42.:12:45.

circuit. Two time European under 23 champion at 1500 metres.

:12:46.:13:01.

Laura Muir has had a bit of time to recover. She is in such good shape.

:13:02.:13:07.

There has been a change of draw, which I am checking, from what we

:13:08.:13:15.

initially had. Because that lady was not meant to be in this heat. They

:13:16.:13:20.

have definitely redrawn this. Laura Muir is still in there. I will bring

:13:21.:13:32.

in Paula in the second, once they get underway. The team-mate of the

:13:33.:13:39.

Polish athlete here was meant to be in this. Very different athletes. I

:13:40.:13:44.

wonder... I would not be surprised if they try to make this pretty

:13:45.:13:48.

quick, because they have nothing to lose. They know Laura Muir's ability

:13:49.:13:54.

and how quick she can be, and there are only two who qualify by right. A

:13:55.:14:01.

bit of a change in for. They have set off reasonably quickly.

:14:02.:14:04.

Klosterhalfen, not surprisingly, near the front. They have switched

:14:05.:14:15.

around quite a bit. Bob Asir is in there as well, and I think she has

:14:16.:14:17.

been swapped. Hopefully Laura was aware of this

:14:18.:14:27.

and it was not sprung on her on the track. It should not affect her

:14:28.:14:32.

tactics. She is running at the back, conserving energy and staying within

:14:33.:14:36.

striking distance. She will probably be happy if they move it along

:14:37.:14:42.

quickly and do not leave it down to the last 400, for her to raise the

:14:43.:14:47.

pace of a decent pace is easier than for the other girls, socially should

:14:48.:14:52.

handle that fairly well. As soon as she moved up on the outside there

:14:53.:14:53.

was pushing and shoving. Klosterhalfen, I always enjoy

:14:54.:15:09.

watching her run. She is a bit like Laura Muir, not as developed, but

:15:10.:15:15.

she is exciting to watch. I know the Germans are full of expectation for

:15:16.:15:19.

what the future holds for her. Who knows, maybe longer distances, but

:15:20.:15:24.

she is no slouch at 1500 metres and is now just on the inside in the

:15:25.:15:29.

lead. She is dangerous and also very brave. I remember watching her take

:15:30.:15:35.

it out hard in a junior event, not afraid. Very much as Laura Muir

:15:36.:15:39.

would often run. She is an exciting talent with a huge range.

:15:40.:15:52.

Klosterhalfen leading. Kaya in second. Laura pure taking -- Laura

:15:53.:16:00.

Muir taking closer order. Very, very slow. That's almost 5000m pace,

:16:01.:16:05.

certainly 3,000 m pace. Laura won't mind that. She's in exactly the

:16:06.:16:10.

right spot. She won't mind that. I'm not sure Klosterhalfen will really

:16:11.:16:13.

mind it. She's pushed on a bit. She's seen that and decided to race

:16:14.:16:19.

the pace a bit. Wait for the cheer when Terzic puts herself in

:16:20.:16:22.

contention to qualify here. The arena will wake up a bit and get

:16:23.:16:27.

behind her attempt to qualify. I think that the seeding judges or

:16:28.:16:33.

seeding panel have not done a great job with some of these races. They

:16:34.:16:38.

need to look more at outdoor performances, when athletes haven't

:16:39.:16:41.

raced indoors. They've taken just her split en route to longer

:16:42.:16:47.

distances. 400 metres to go. It's all beginning to stretch out a

:16:48.:16:53.

little bit. Terzic is still there. Kaya has gone out the back door.

:16:54.:16:59.

Terzic has given the crowd something to cheer about here. The top two

:17:00.:17:03.

guaranteed of course. Out of those three, I would expect Terzic to be

:17:04.:17:07.

the one who might miss out. She's gone very early here. Klosterhalfen

:17:08.:17:11.

will try to hang onto her. She's not blessed with great acceleration, the

:17:12.:17:15.

German. Laura Muir is. She moves into second place. 200 metres to go.

:17:16.:17:20.

Three of them, only two qualify. It's very slow, so whoever finishes

:17:21.:17:25.

third here may well lose out. Terzic striking hard down the back

:17:26.:17:27.

straight, Laura Muir looking comfortable. Klosterhalfen will not

:17:28.:17:32.

give this up, though. The German is still there. Laura Muir is looking a

:17:33.:17:36.

little bit tired. I think she's going to be OK. Klosterhalfen will

:17:37.:17:40.

try to attack again. Laura Muir looking comfortable. Just checking,

:17:41.:17:43.

there's a bit of danger there. It will be tight on the line. Laura

:17:44.:17:46.

Muir makes sure. Terzic goes through. And Klosterhalfen well,

:17:47.:17:55.

third place. Three fastest loser spots, so many Laura Muirs in here,

:17:56.:17:59.

it's hard to pick out who was winning that. Her fan club up there

:18:00.:18:03.

will be delighted. That was a bit of hard work in the end for Laura. Not

:18:04.:18:15.

surprisingly she ran an 8. 8.55 3,000 metres four hours ago. One

:18:16.:18:19.

thing Klosterhalfen doesn't have is track acceleration. She's strong.

:18:20.:18:23.

But too much of a gap to make up. She will have an anxious wait now.

:18:24.:18:29.

Klosterhalfen there a bit like McColgan, takes her a bit of time to

:18:30.:18:35.

get up to top speed. Terzic knew that in a flat-out 400 metres last,

:18:36.:18:40.

hard push, Muir and Klosterhalfen would probably get her. That's why

:18:41.:18:43.

she took it so early. She was tying up. Looking frantically at the

:18:44.:18:48.

screen there down the home straight. Just enough to hold on. But only

:18:49.:18:53.

just. There was a chance that Klosterhalfen had caught her on the

:18:54.:18:56.

line. I think Laura had to work hard there, but not too hard. She left it

:18:57.:19:01.

a little bit tight in the final 50 metres for my liking any way. Well,

:19:02.:19:10.

they were certainly happy. I wonder if Laura saw that, she's with Phil

:19:11.:19:15.

now. We rarely see that, that's quite a

:19:16.:19:19.

fan club you've got. I take it you know some of them, do you? I don't

:19:20.:19:27.

know! I can't see their faces. A big section of British fans over there

:19:28.:19:32.

as well. What's it like to have that support behind you when you're going

:19:33.:19:37.

for the double out here? It's great. I was with the Serbian girl there,

:19:38.:19:41.

you saw the crowd's reaction to her. It's great to have support. It

:19:42.:19:44.

really helps when it gets tough. You've had to be in two mind sets

:19:45.:19:48.

today, this morning trying to get through and conserve energy. You

:19:49.:19:50.

knew you had to race tonight. You had to cover every move there as

:19:51.:19:54.

well. What's it been like to negotiate that journey today? I had

:19:55.:19:57.

to, this morning, it was difficult. Obviously you want to qualify,

:19:58.:20:01.

there's no point in wasting energy. I looked at the times and knew I was

:20:02.:20:04.

safe. Just came through enough to qualify. Then today I didn't want to

:20:05.:20:08.

leave it outside top two, because you don't know what the heats were

:20:09.:20:11.

going to do. I did enough to qualify. Hopefully legs will be all

:20:12.:20:15.

right tomorrow. I know Paula Radcliffe talked about the heats

:20:16.:20:18.

today, the most stressful in a way, now you have the finals, you can go

:20:19.:20:22.

for it and do what you came here to do. Yeah, you want to get to the

:20:23.:20:26.

final first. I'm glad that's out of the way and looking forward to

:20:27.:20:30.

finals tomorrow. Well done on getting through both rounds today.

:20:31.:20:33.

We wish you well for the first final tomorrow and look forward to

:20:34.:20:37.

speaking after that. All the best. Thanks very much, cheers. I think

:20:38.:20:45.

looking at that slow motion, she looked more comfortable than maybe

:20:46.:20:48.

during the race. Just we were concerned a little bit. But she

:20:49.:20:51.

looked very comfortable indeed. Terzic with a new indeer national

:20:52.:20:56.

record. Well done to her. Klosterhalfen, two more races to

:20:57.:20:58.

come, she's got a chance with that time.

:20:59.:21:07.

Dadic bronze medal last year outdoors. Having a fantastic day so

:21:08.:21:12.

far, three personal bets from three, the long jump, first round 5. 98. A

:21:13.:21:18.

bit down on what she's capable of. This is the second-round attempt.

:21:19.:21:23.

Oh, that's better. It's well over six metres. In fact, it's 6. 6.41,

:21:24.:21:35.

wow, that's another personal best. That's four out of five. Dadic

:21:36.:21:40.

stamping her authority for possibly the Silver Medal. Thiam of Belgium

:21:41.:21:48.

still way out in front. Surely can't be caught. But Dadic absolutely in

:21:49.:21:52.

great form here in Belgrade. The next heat in the women's 1500

:21:53.:22:11.

metres. Sarah McDonald goes here. They are rattling through the races.

:22:12.:22:15.

They lost a bit of ground earlier today with the false starts, a few

:22:16.:22:18.

this evening as well. Look out for the yellow vest of

:22:19.:22:35.

Sweden and Bahta, two go through automatically only. Mageean will

:22:36.:22:43.

have her work cut out. Sarah McDonald has a strong chance here,

:22:44.:22:46.

if she puts herself in the right position and she's able to use the

:22:47.:22:50.

speed she has in the closing stages. It will be about what they decide to

:22:51.:22:53.

do early on, have they looked at the first heat and are they moving at a

:22:54.:23:00.

quicker pace? She ran so well in the UK championship, Sarah McDonald to

:23:01.:23:03.

take the title. Just holding off Eilish McColgan there. Say this for

:23:04.:23:11.

Steve's benefit, she's now a Birchfield Harrier and pretty well

:23:12.:23:14.

positioned at the moment. A slight benefit of knowing the pace of the

:23:15.:23:17.

first heat. There's one to come after this. That time of Konstanze

:23:18.:23:24.

Klosterhalfen 4. 10. 37. Three fastest loser go through. McDonald

:23:25.:23:30.

just sitting alongside Sidorska of Ukraine. Mageean was happy to see

:23:31.:23:41.

Bobocea put into the first heat, I'm sure. Looking better today. Sarah

:23:42.:23:51.

McDonald is placed well, tracking Bahta. Difficulty with Bahta is that

:23:52.:23:56.

she does have the quick change of pace if she chooses to use it and if

:23:57.:24:02.

in shape, she can fluctuate a lot if she comes in great shape to the

:24:03.:24:07.

championships. She looks composed. She's starting to labour though. A

:24:08.:24:12.

slight figure Sarah McDonald. Moving into a good position behind Akdag

:24:13.:24:18.

and Mageean. Two go through automatically. Sarah McDonald doing

:24:19.:24:21.

things properly at the moment, getting herself in the right

:24:22.:24:31.

position. Akdag takes the them through. Mageean is running strongly

:24:32.:24:35.

at the moment. We mention that she took the bronze medal at the

:24:36.:24:40.

European 00ships last year in Amsterdam, in second, behind Akdag,

:24:41.:24:42.

with Sarah McDonald well placed at the moment. Three laps to go. Get

:24:43.:24:46.

the feeling that Akdag is starting to slow a bit. You can see them

:24:47.:24:52.

bunching up behind her. Mageean chomping at the bit wondering

:24:53.:24:55.

whether she should go past her and take it on. Then that means she's

:24:56.:25:02.

towing the others around. The decisions of a middle distance race.

:25:03.:25:07.

Akdag beginning to look a little bit uneasy, not quite as strong. Mageean

:25:08.:25:16.

is well placed. So good McDonald. Mageean looks to her outside. Two

:25:17.:25:20.

going through automatically with 400 metres to go. Sarah McDonald in a

:25:21.:25:25.

good position. Has to come wide around Bahta at the moment. She's in

:25:26.:25:29.

a reasonably good position. Bahta will move wide as she tries to go

:25:30.:25:32.

around. That means Sarah McDonald will have to run a bit further.

:25:33.:25:39.

Bahta is quite a wide arm swing and that's dangerous for Sarah McDonald

:25:40.:25:42.

who's trying to get past her and use as little energy as possible. Going

:25:43.:25:47.

to have to wait and make her move on the straight here. Stepping out

:25:48.:25:49.

there, that takes something out of the legs. Bahta jotles her way out

:25:50.:25:53.

in front. Now McDonald is struggling. Two to go through

:25:54.:25:56.

automatically. Three in front of her. Akdag is spent. Instead Bahta

:25:57.:26:06.

in front. McDonald working hard to get on the back of Mageean. These

:26:07.:26:10.

two are strong contenders for the first two places. Mageean holding

:26:11.:26:13.

on. McDonald making a kick now. Bahta in front. Mageean, McDonald,

:26:14.:26:18.

gritting her teeth and driving on. Trying to get in the top two.

:26:19.:26:24.

McDonald has her on the line, just. Bahta takes it, McDonald goes

:26:25.:26:28.

through as the second-placed qualifier. That was, at times, she

:26:29.:26:33.

was a little bit unsettled and out of position. That was a brave run.

:26:34.:26:37.

McDonald will go through to tomorrow's final. You have to say, a

:26:38.:26:42.

tremendous achievement by Sarah McDonald. She had it all to do with

:26:43.:26:46.

50 metres to go. That was a very gutsy run and a big step up for

:26:47.:26:49.

Sarah McDonald. She did what she came here to do. She wanted to come

:26:50.:26:53.

and learn at a major stage about progressing through the rounds.

:26:54.:26:55.

There were a couple of times in the race where she looked very uneasy.

:26:56.:26:59.

She was getting shoved around. She wasn't where she wanted to be. She

:27:00.:27:04.

was able to react and come through. Let's have another look at it. She's

:27:05.:27:08.

seen the result on the big screen. This is where she was. She had so

:27:09.:27:12.

much still to do. She did. Even at this point, where us, Bahta moved

:27:13.:27:20.

around. Barysevich pushed her back again. You could see the concern on

:27:21.:27:25.

her face. She composed herself. She was closing on them a bit. She

:27:26.:27:30.

pooled every ounce of energy she could find. Down the home straight,

:27:31.:27:34.

she didn't panic. She just moved wide and she could sense that

:27:35.:27:38.

Barysevich was tying up. She ran through to the line, no looking

:27:39.:27:42.

around, no looking for clear qualification, she worked hard

:27:43.:27:44.

through to the line and she's rewarded with a place in the

:27:45.:27:55.

finalment Almost -- final. This was a great finish to the line. Watch

:27:56.:27:59.

her entrance stage left. Barysevich thinks she's got it. And there she

:28:00.:28:03.

is, the Birchfield Harrier through to the final with that effort on the

:28:04.:28:08.

line. Now she's talking to Phil. I think there's one delighted woman in

:28:09.:28:12.

front of me. That was a tremendous burst of speed to take you through

:28:13.:28:16.

to the final. Yeah, I knew I had good closing speed. I needed to use

:28:17.:28:21.

that. I t was pushy, I got elbowed a lot. I had to rely on my instinct to

:28:22.:28:25.

get round and swing down the finish line. I didn't know if I'd done it.

:28:26.:28:29.

A relief when it came on the board. Now you have, the realisation that

:28:30.:28:32.

you've made the final. What does that mean to you? Now I've made the

:28:33.:28:36.

final, I didn't think it would happen, go away and recover and get

:28:37.:28:40.

ready for tomorrow. At the start of the day, did you believe this was

:28:41.:28:45.

within you and this would be the target today? Yeah I knew I was in

:28:46.:28:49.

great shape. Coming here and doing that was perfect. You always have to

:28:50.:28:52.

have that idea in your head that's possible. When you're seeing what

:28:53.:28:57.

Laura Muir is able to do on the world stage right now, must be great

:28:58.:29:00.

inspiration to people like you coming through? Yeah it's really

:29:01.:29:05.

inspiring, seeing how great she is over 3 K as well. It makes me

:29:06.:29:08.

believe British people can do that kind of thing. It's great.

:29:09.:29:11.

Congratulations to you. See you in the final. Thank you, see you

:29:12.:29:15.

tomorrow. Well done Sarah McDonald. She's

:29:16.:29:17.

through to the final. Not much time to pause for breath

:29:18.:29:36.

literally. Because this third heat already, they're running again a bit

:29:37.:29:40.

behind schedule. The false starts at the beginning of the evening. So

:29:41.:29:44.

Ennaoui should have been in Laura Muir's is in this one. Ennaoui, the

:29:45.:29:56.

diminutive Pole there a well known kind of front runner. She's got her

:29:57.:30:01.

elbows out already. Look at her, wanting to give herself a bit of

:30:02.:30:11.

room. Gega now steeplechaser. She's moved up to steeplechase with decent

:30:12.:30:21.

effect. Gega, the Albanian. One thing, Paula, two pretty good

:30:22.:30:26.

runners, who know what's required in terms of time. Sarah was just

:30:27.:30:32.

outside 4. 12, 4. 13 will get you through. It is, but the other girls

:30:33.:30:36.

need to wake up here. I think it's going to be Gega or Ennaoui pushing

:30:37.:30:42.

to the pace. On paper, Ennaoui has came out of these switch-arounds

:30:43.:30:47.

with a much easier heat than she would have been in the first heat

:30:48.:30:50.

against Laura Muir. This is definitely an easier run for her.

:30:51.:30:57.

She's been in good shape so far. She's been training well. She really

:30:58.:31:04.

feels that should Laura show any chink of weakness, she can jump on

:31:05.:31:07.

that and take the title from her this weekend. She's trying to run

:31:08.:31:11.

this race and conserve as much energy as possible and Gega front

:31:12.:31:15.

running, as we often see her. Maybe that suits her more in the

:31:16.:31:19.

steeplechase, but certainly indoors it's no harm in being out front

:31:20.:31:22.

running. You won't have any wind or anything like that to contend with.

:31:23.:31:28.

Yes, she is leading, but as you said, she's not running very

:31:29.:31:37.

quickly. Kerry O'Flaherty is 30 years of age, the Irish athlete, and

:31:38.:31:41.

she went thanked me for telling you that. Kerry just closing the whole

:31:42.:31:46.

group up there, getting closer behind Gega. Ennaoui on the curve.

:31:47.:31:53.

The one other thing though, the likes of Gega and Ennaoui, Ennaoui

:31:54.:31:56.

is quite quick but you give the others a chance if you go to slowly

:31:57.:32:01.

because their ability isn't as fast but they can kick. You have to be

:32:02.:32:06.

careful about. Absolutely, somebody with a slow personal best on paper

:32:07.:32:10.

might be able to quick much, much faster and if they've never been in

:32:11.:32:13.

a slow race against them, they wait know that. I think that's like Gega

:32:14.:32:18.

has taken this opportunity to get it moving a bit. It's not a really slow

:32:19.:32:22.

pace here. They are moving along pretty well. Yes, just through,

:32:23.:32:32.

passing 1000 metres this time round. Was Lallana ran a personal best of

:32:33.:32:36.

410, quicker than her outdoor best, so she is obviously in good form

:32:37.:32:41.

this winter, so looking comfortable in second place. Ennaoui then tucked

:32:42.:32:46.

in behind her and the Swede, Nilsson in fourth. Kerry O'Flaherty is

:32:47.:32:53.

tailing off. The first two places and the three fastest losers spot.

:32:54.:32:58.

Klosterhalfen is looking like she may get one of those. The pace is

:32:59.:33:04.

starting to pick up. If Ennaoui starting to rock a bit or is it just

:33:05.:33:09.

her ponytail swishing behind her? No, she is still very composed and

:33:10.:33:13.

it is Nilsson who has moved a little bit wide to launch her attack

:33:14.:33:17.

earlier so that she can get herself at least up contending with these

:33:18.:33:21.

two over the final lap. Yes, this will be interesting because they are

:33:22.:33:26.

getting within that range there. So, Gega, Ennaoui now starting to move

:33:27.:33:30.

to the front with 200 metres to go. The top two only go three. Gega

:33:31.:33:36.

could be under pressure as the poll picks away, have a look behind, see

:33:37.:33:41.

that she has got space, open act, but Gega has not totally got rid of

:33:42.:33:47.

the Czech athlete. Ennaoui is constantly looking behind but she

:33:48.:33:51.

needs to concentrate the route ahead. She has got one in this bag.

:33:52.:33:59.

Ennaoui looks again. Gega looks like she is going to take second. That

:34:00.:34:05.

time, I think that is going to mean that for the athlete in third, I

:34:06.:34:08.

think she will be out of there, because there were two people close

:34:09.:34:13.

to Sarah McDonald and Klosterhalfen from the first heat, I think they

:34:14.:34:17.

will both read as fastest losers. We will tidy that up for you shortly.

:34:18.:34:23.

But Ennaoui looked pretty good. A good strong finish for you there and

:34:24.:34:26.

those two I think are worthy to we expected to go through. -- were the

:34:27.:34:38.

two we expected to go through. Yes, they worthy to expected to go free.

:34:39.:34:42.

Ennaoui looks very good, doesn't she? She's a very good confident

:34:43.:34:48.

runner, isn't she? She knows she is in very good shape and she would

:34:49.:34:52.

like to really perform hair, take it to Laura Muir and I think she thinks

:34:53.:34:58.

her strength is amplified by the fact Laura has chosen to double up.

:34:59.:35:03.

Ennaoui looked around a few times in that last lap, didn't she, showing a

:35:04.:35:13.

bit of weakness there. The athlete in third was unable to make up the

:35:14.:35:19.

ground on Ennaoui -- on Gega, despite her showing a bit of

:35:20.:35:24.

weakness. This confirms who goes through. None of the others in that

:35:25.:35:29.

heat will go through as fastest qualifiers. Two from the second heat

:35:30.:35:32.

and Klosterhalfen will go three instead. Thiam approved in the

:35:33.:35:47.

second round that she had the length and this is the final round. She

:35:48.:35:52.

just strength -- stretched into that and decelerate it just a tad, maybe.

:35:53.:36:01.

Yes, she knows. That 6.37 looks like it will be her best. I was hoping

:36:02.:36:05.

full ball because a view more centimetres would put her in touch

:36:06.:36:12.

with the world indoor record. What a talent in the Olympic champion we

:36:13.:36:17.

saw come of age last summer in Rio. Taking control of this European

:36:18.:36:24.

Indoor Championships. 6.23, the best in the second round.

:36:25.:36:51.

While, she is fighting for a place on the rostrum as well. At the age

:36:52.:37:02.

of 34, she might be destined for the rostrum. Her lifetime best in the

:37:03.:37:09.

heptathlon was in Rio last summer. 6.12 in round two. It is 6.38 in

:37:10.:37:19.

round three four Farkas. An improvement. Those through into

:37:20.:37:30.

second. Really close between Farkas and Thiam but Tadic the best of all.

:37:31.:37:38.

The world record possibly incite though. We will have to wait and

:37:39.:37:45.

see. The 800 metres still to come. Here are your overall scores. 4106

:37:46.:37:52.

for Thiam. She will have to run the 800 metres of her life, somewhere in

:37:53.:37:58.

the region of two point 14 if she wants to make an assault on that

:37:59.:38:07.

indoor world record. Possibly an interested spectator of that would

:38:08.:38:10.

be Morgan Lake, who will be going in the high jump. Qualification about

:38:11.:38:16.

to get under way, despite her relaxed approach there. She spoke to

:38:17.:38:22.

Steve yesterday. Morgan Lake, competing here in the high jump.

:38:23.:38:26.

Obviously there is a pentathlon here as well. Our whereabouts are you?

:38:27.:38:31.

Really aware of it. I will be jumping and qualifying at the same

:38:32.:38:34.

time as the pentathlon is on, so I'll have a little bit of an eye on

:38:35.:38:41.

it and focusing on the high jump. Of course, you are world junior

:38:42.:38:43.

champion in both. But the Jouvenaar mindset that you would just focus on

:38:44.:38:50.

the high jump here? I have had a bit of a -- what put you in the mindset

:38:51.:38:55.

that you would just focus on the high jump here? I have had a bit of

:38:56.:39:01.

a change in mindset and with focus on my training, so I am focusing

:39:02.:39:05.

just on high jump here. I have moved up to Loughborough for university

:39:06.:39:12.

and changed coaches, so there has been a lot of change there. But I am

:39:13.:39:17.

really enjoying it so far. Coming back to your aspirations for this

:39:18.:39:23.

weekend, what can you do? What can you achieve? I don't know, really.

:39:24.:39:29.

Obviously I am hoping to jump high. I jumped my personal best, 1.94, I

:39:30.:39:40.

haven't done that since 2014 and I'm hoping to get rid of that now. In

:39:41.:39:46.

terms of the ranking in the competition, I want to do well

:39:47.:39:51.

personally as well and make the final. That is a big game for me. We

:39:52.:39:57.

will see what can come out of that. Looking forward to the summer and

:39:58.:40:00.

widening the chat out to the multiple events, to the heptathlon

:40:01.:40:05.

outdoors and the retirement of Jess Ennis-Hill. Hal where'er you of the

:40:06.:40:13.

scrutiny you were under and the scrutiny of your performances so

:40:14.:40:19.

far? -- hal where are you? I haven't really given it much thought, to be

:40:20.:40:23.

honest. Obviously Jess being out of the picture will be weird, going to

:40:24.:40:27.

heptathlon and her not being there. But I think it's quite nice how me

:40:28.:40:32.

and cat are now going to be a bit more there and we still have her

:40:33.:40:37.

legacy as well. What is the dream for the London world Championships?

:40:38.:40:41.

I would love to do both the heptathlon and the high jump there.

:40:42.:40:46.

Is the timetable friendly enough for that? It just about works. Not that

:40:47.:40:51.

much space but hopefully I can do it. Well, there is Morgan. Denise,

:40:52.:40:59.

she is still only 19 and it feels like we have been speaking about

:41:00.:41:03.

Morgan Lake for such a long time already. What about her decision to

:41:04.:41:08.

just do high jump indoors and do the full heptathlon outdoors? Is that a

:41:09.:41:12.

good thing? I think it's absolutely a good thing. Morgan has got to put

:41:13.:41:17.

to bed all the negative experiences that she is experienced in

:41:18.:41:21.

heptathlon. I think competing in Beijing last year for the high jump

:41:22.:41:26.

gave her such a boost, such a lift, the continuing that positive vibe,

:41:27.:41:30.

going on to the indoors is really important. She talked about

:41:31.:41:34.

transition between moving from working with her father in Slough

:41:35.:41:42.

and that area, moving to Loughborough working with her new

:41:43.:41:46.

coaches. It seems to be working and fundamentally she needs to be happy

:41:47.:41:51.

again and take on some new instruction, which she's embracing.

:41:52.:41:53.

Studying is still really important to her as well and cheat managing to

:41:54.:41:57.

dovetail back in Loughborough. She's in a good place right now. We know

:41:58.:42:03.

that she's good at the high jump. Hopefully she will have a good

:42:04.:42:07.

competition here. But in terms of the summer, Steve asked her, is she

:42:08.:42:11.

aware of the attention? What would be a good summer for her? London

:42:12.:42:15.

world Championships, lots of will have expectations. Expectations, I

:42:16.:42:23.

think that's been part of the problem by people -- why she has not

:42:24.:42:28.

been able to relax and enjoy her hat Aplon. She is so young with so much

:42:29.:42:37.

to learn -- enjoy her heptathlon. Her long jump is very good when she

:42:38.:42:40.

hits the board, she has got speed to work on and there is much more to

:42:41.:42:46.

improve on. First and foremost for Morgan, it's the mental freeness

:42:47.:42:49.

that she needs to get the best out of herself for heptathlon. Well, a

:42:50.:42:56.

good high jump here in Belgrade will help that. She's about to get under

:42:57.:43:00.

way and out on the track, about to get under way, the women's 400 metre

:43:01.:43:09.

semifinals. Yes, and the athlete in lane one has withdrawn, making

:43:10.:43:15.

things slightly easier for Eilidh Doyle. Two will go through

:43:16.:43:21.

automatically. Doyle and Hejnova would be the

:43:22.:43:36.

favourites to take those two qualifying places, having had some

:43:37.:43:44.

epic battles. There is Hejnova. She had injuries after Beijing,

:43:45.:43:48.

scuppering her fitness ahead of Rio. She finished fourth there. Eilidh

:43:49.:43:55.

Doyle, former European champion in generic. A finalist in Rio. Her time

:43:56.:44:05.

not too impressive but there is more to come, I am sure. Holub was second

:44:06.:44:18.

in the Polish Championships, so they will have a strong four by 400

:44:19.:44:20.

metres. Putalova has been a finalist at both

:44:21.:44:42.

the Europeans and the worlds. She is on the inside now, with the athlete

:44:43.:44:51.

withdrawal. So, just two to go through to the final, this is the

:44:52.:44:56.

first of three semifinals. The final is tomorrow. Doyle starts as one of

:44:57.:45:10.

the favourites for this, alongside Hejnova, and Doyle has the advantage

:45:11.:45:16.

of being able to work on the outside.

:45:17.:45:27.

The first of three semifinals in the women's 400 metres. The way they go.

:45:28.:45:39.

Eilidh toil away fairly smartly. There is a break towards the end of

:45:40.:45:46.

the first lap. There is often quite a battle, a tussle at the break.

:45:47.:45:51.

Harder to pass on tighter, indoor tracks. Zuzana Hejnova trying to get

:45:52.:45:58.

a squeeze on Eilidh Doyle. They are a long way clear of the rest. These

:45:59.:46:08.

will be the two to go through. Eilidh Doyle and Zuzana Hejnova so

:46:09.:46:15.

experienced and so strong. The gap is closing a little bit and Zuzana

:46:16.:46:23.

Hejnova starting to rock. Eilidh Doyle looking for it. I think Holub

:46:24.:46:37.

might have got there. She timed her run and it might have been timed to

:46:38.:46:39.

perfection and Eilidh Doyle might be out. Just two to go through. I think

:46:40.:46:47.

she knows as well. It is our high risk strategy that if you decide you

:46:48.:46:52.

are going to take on Zuzana Hejnova in the first 200 metres, they are

:46:53.:46:58.

both quick. That is as quick as I have seen Eilidh Doyle attack. She

:46:59.:47:00.

has been running very well, so she has every right to do that. Where it

:47:01.:47:05.

went wrong was the last 40, 50 metres. Zuzana Hejnova chose not to

:47:06.:47:10.

fight Eilidh Doyle and relaxed in behind her. The of them were being

:47:11.:47:22.

attacked by Holub. Zuzana Hejnova perhaps sensed there was pressure

:47:23.:47:29.

from behind but Templeman croquette driving. Holub had the momentum to

:47:30.:47:34.

take her over the line in second place. -- Eilidh Doyle. I wonder if

:47:35.:47:44.

she had slotted behind Zuzana Hejnova, whether the two of them

:47:45.:47:50.

would have stayed in front. Eilidh Doyle might have been trying to lay

:47:51.:47:55.

down a marker for the final. Sadly she will not be in the final. In

:47:56.:48:03.

slow motion, you can see Holub coming through just as Eilidh Doyle

:48:04.:48:07.

starts to tie up. She was crying out for the line to come. Holub timed it

:48:08.:48:15.

so well for the hugely disappointing for Eilidh Doyle. Zuzana Hejnova

:48:16.:48:20.

goes through and Holub goes through and Eilidh Doyle does not. She will

:48:21.:48:24.

throw everything into the relay. There was a bit of a margin in the

:48:25.:48:30.

yen will get her thoughts. You saw how close it was. Were you aware she

:48:31.:48:39.

was chasing you down? I do not know what was going on. I was just trying

:48:40.:48:44.

to get to the line as quickly as I could. I am gutted. As Andrew said

:48:45.:48:50.

on commentary, the least you would have expected was to make the final

:48:51.:48:57.

and hope to content for a medal. I knew I had to go out hard. I knew I

:48:58.:49:02.

had to try to win the race and make it difficult for the girls. I wanted

:49:03.:49:07.

to try to win so I could get into the final. Tim not make the final is

:49:08.:49:14.

heartbreaking. -- to not make. You will have to come back now for the

:49:15.:49:18.

relay. Will be something to look forward to? It would be my chance to

:49:19.:49:24.

try and get a medal with the team. So, yes. I have tomorrow to look

:49:25.:49:28.

back and have a look at this race and forget about it and move on to

:49:29.:49:34.

the relay. Thank you for talking to us. A deeply frustrating result. She

:49:35.:49:46.

was not drawn into the confrontation, Holub. Just two going

:49:47.:49:53.

through and six in the final. Eilidh Doyle goes out. I said that was a

:49:54.:50:04.

high risk strategy. We're going to see Nielsen in the third race.

:50:05.:50:07.

Eilidh Doyle made the point that your chances in the final can be won

:50:08.:50:13.

and lost in the semifinal because of the lane draw. Eilidh Doyle went for

:50:14.:50:18.

it, Chi absolutely did and just ran out of legs at the end. Not in the

:50:19.:50:25.

finals. We had three coming into these championships. Sadly, Nielsen

:50:26.:50:31.

had to pull out with injury before and that might affect the 4x400 team

:50:32.:50:38.

but her twin sister is in the third of these semifinals but none of them

:50:39.:50:47.

are easy. Lea Sprunger is definitely the fastest and the favourite. Sara

:50:48.:50:53.

Slott Petersen, the Olympic silver-medallist at 400-metre

:50:54.:51:00.

hurdles. Tamara Salaski will get a big cheer from the home country.

:51:01.:51:08.

This is the Ukrainian, Olha Bibik. She ran very well in qualification.

:51:09.:51:17.

Sara Slott Petersen was involved in the racing. The three of them came

:51:18.:51:26.

and the Frenchwoman was reinstated after initially being disqualified.

:51:27.:51:30.

Sara Slott Petersen finds herself in lane three with Debra Sinan is in

:51:31.:51:38.

lane two. The Mediterranean under 23 champion from last year. -- Sananes.

:51:39.:51:49.

A big cheer for Tamara Lasalle -- Tamara Salaski. There are plenty

:51:50.:51:56.

400-metre hurdlers, including a Lee Childs. -- Childs.

:51:57.:52:10.

Justyna Swiety in lane five. She was fourth in 2014. At the Europeans two

:52:11.:52:20.

years ago, she won the bronze medal. This year, she has run quicker than

:52:21.:52:25.

ever. She might have to go at least that quickly to make sure of a place

:52:26.:52:31.

in the finals. Lea Sprunger leads the European rankings with the

:52:32.:52:42.

quickest time. Lea Sprunger started very quickly. Justyna Swiety from

:52:43.:52:46.

Poland watching had disappeared down the back straight for the now

:52:47.:52:50.

beginning to get into her running and moving away from Olha Bibik.

:52:51.:52:54.

Sara Slott Petersen wanting to get into the race or quickly as she

:52:55.:52:57.

cancelled that you can see the intent of the Swiss Ashley on the

:52:58.:53:01.

outside. She is well ahead here. Remember what happened in the first

:53:02.:53:06.

semifinal. Peterson again grappling for second and again in a scrap with

:53:07.:53:15.

the French athletes. Debra Sinan is -- Sananes having to give way. The

:53:16.:53:21.

battle between Peterson and Justyna Swiety for second place. These two

:53:22.:53:26.

closing slightly on Lea Sprunger. You do not often see that in the

:53:27.:53:30.

400, looking comfortable. Justyna Swiety comes through to take the

:53:31.:53:40.

second spot. They were the two, in terms of form and outside lanes and

:53:41.:53:42.

they were expecting to come through. I think it was a little bit easy for

:53:43.:53:52.

Lea Sprunger. To be able to look round, as she did, in the home

:53:53.:53:56.

straight, she will be happy to have made it through. A sigh of relief.

:53:57.:54:01.

She is through to the final. No doubt she was the favourite. I was

:54:02.:54:05.

impressed with how Justyna Swiety ran. She did not panic. She waited

:54:06.:54:13.

and waited and knew that Sara Slott Petersen would be coming back to her

:54:14.:54:18.

just slowing more than Justyna Swiety was slowing. Justyna Swiety

:54:19.:54:26.

maintained almost an even pace. Justyna Swiety with a masterclass in

:54:27.:54:30.

measuring and judging the 400 metres. Sara Slott Petersen is the

:54:31.:54:35.

athlete who pays the price. Lea Sprunger very strong. She had a big

:54:36.:54:41.

lead for the she did not fade as Zuzana Hejnova and a Lee Doyle --

:54:42.:54:50.

Doyle in the first heat. I would not want to get into an

:54:51.:55:03.

elbowing competition. Sara Slott Petersen does not make the final but

:55:04.:55:11.

does get a season's best. Now for the last of these semifinals. Lavlai

:55:12.:55:20.

Nielsen is now the last Briton standing because her twin had to

:55:21.:55:36.

withdraw. The race was redrawn and she has lane six, which makes a big

:55:37.:55:43.

difference on the indoor track. She is a huge talent. We can have

:55:44.:55:49.

another look at her this morning. What I liked about this morning, if

:55:50.:55:54.

you think of Birmingham, she had 24.1 and attacked it hard. This time

:55:55.:56:01.

more than a second slower but it looked comfortable and control. Then

:56:02.:56:08.

she stayed strong. Against better athletes, to get to the front in the

:56:09.:56:13.

first 200, you must go quicker. She is learning all the time and running

:56:14.:56:19.

with real maturity. Just watch the action coming into the home

:56:20.:56:23.

straight. Looking very good. Keep driving forward. That is pretty

:56:24.:56:28.

impressive. More of that tonight and she will make it through. You

:56:29.:56:34.

mentioned the endurance she has. When she and her sister used to run

:56:35.:56:40.

distances, that was the initial choice. Someone spotted that might

:56:41.:56:46.

be useful at this distance. Lavlai Nielsen has the quicker leg turnover

:56:47.:56:52.

and she is more suited to this race. She goes in lane six. It is ruthless

:56:53.:56:58.

at this stage and only two go through to the final tomorrow.

:56:59.:57:09.

Floria Guei was reinstated after initially being disqualified. On the

:57:10.:57:19.

outside, you get an idea of the banking on the track. Not as severe

:57:20.:57:26.

as some of the indoor tracks, which can throw you a bit. Inside is

:57:27.:57:32.

Floria Guei. She was disqualified after a little nudge. No news on

:57:33.:57:40.

that incident. It looked a nasty fall that she was taken off to

:57:41.:57:49.

hospital. Baumgartner certainly has a chance. -- Baumgart.

:57:50.:58:10.

Lara Hoffman is inside her. Took the German indoor title for the second

:58:11.:58:18.

time last month. We have already seen the strength of the German

:58:19.:58:22.

team, particularly in the 60 hurdles.

:58:23.:58:33.

I mentioned the line-up with two going through automatically. Floria

:58:34.:58:43.

Guei is a great relay runner. For those who may have seen how race

:58:44.:58:51.

this morning, they were -- would consider her quite fortunate to be

:58:52.:59:05.

here. She was reinstated. On the outside is Baumgart, looking to make

:59:06.:59:09.

it a hat-trick of Polish women in the final, which is tomorrow.

:59:10.:59:16.

So, running blind on the outside is Laviai Nielsen. Trying to go so fast

:59:17.:59:27.

and trying to get to the break first. How will Laviai Nielsen run

:59:28.:59:34.

the race? A strong start by Baumgart. The three outside, Floria

:59:35.:59:43.

Guei, Baumgart and Laviai Nielsen leading them out. Laviai Nielsen has

:59:44.:59:48.

gone out strongly. A bit of a stumble. You can see the effort that

:59:49.:59:56.

Baumgart is putting in. A huge gap for the rest to try to close. Laviai

:59:57.:00:00.

Nielsen looks to be fairly comfortable. Floria Guei has judged

:00:01.:00:06.

it well and put in the finish to take the victory. Tempo map are

:00:07.:00:09.

trying to get the victory for the better lane in the final but she

:00:10.:00:14.

will be a true as a qualifier. -- Laviai Nielsen trying to get. They

:00:15.:00:18.

qualified a long way clear of the rest. Not as tough a semifinal as

:00:19.:00:21.

the previous one macro. Elko yes, well done. The youngster

:00:22.:00:35.

is three. Just a pity she didn't win that, because with the winning time,

:00:36.:00:40.

she would have got one of the best planes. Just not quite holding on

:00:41.:00:45.

here. Guei, well, she's a very good athlete and is definitely a

:00:46.:00:48.

contender foreign athlete, so Vlaar via Nielsen is as close to Guei as

:00:49.:00:54.

she is here, of course, the problem is she will be in traffic come the

:00:55.:00:59.

final. -- is Laviai Nielsen is as close to Guei as she is here. If she

:01:00.:01:05.

goes in to a deal with the others, as she will do, it's a bit of a

:01:06.:01:10.

lottery as to which lane she gets, which means she can't attack too

:01:11.:01:15.

hard come the final. That's tomorrow. Tonight was about getting

:01:16.:01:19.

to be final. You can see how she tried to react at the end but it was

:01:20.:01:24.

too late in the race. Just wasn't able to hold her off. 8.5 out of

:01:25.:01:30.

ten? Am I being harsh. Nine out of ten. She has done brilliantly to get

:01:31.:01:36.

to the final. You can see the result there. She has just about got her

:01:37.:01:41.

breath back and she is with Phil. Yes, she is just about getting her

:01:42.:01:45.

breath back, Steve, but breathless or not, I'm sure you're delighted to

:01:46.:01:50.

speak to us after reaching a final on a like this. I can't believe I'm

:01:51.:01:57.

European finalist. I wanted to try to win that semi and I voted all the

:01:58.:02:01.

way. I'm so pleased I'm European finalist! We saw what happened, with

:02:02.:02:07.

Eilidh not making the final, from a regime where expected to come

:02:08.:02:11.

through. You, with your lack of experience, relatively, took that in

:02:12.:02:14.

your stride. It was just a consummate performance. Yes, I mean,

:02:15.:02:19.

I spoke to my coach about this and I was really nervous coming into this

:02:20.:02:22.

and he said, don't make it any be bigger than it is. At the end of the

:02:23.:02:29.

day, it's just a 400 and that's what I trained for. I try to stay as calm

:02:30.:02:33.

and relaxed as I could. I'm over the mean that I have a final tomorrow.

:02:34.:02:36.

And in that final, the likelihood is you might be one of the indoor --

:02:37.:02:45.

inside lanes, possibly in traffic. How will you address that with your

:02:46.:02:48.

coach? I'm going to fight it. I'm absolutely going to find it. I'm

:02:49.:02:50.

gaining my confidence slowly but surely. I will die on the line

:02:51.:02:56.

trying. One thing you have underlined is that you belong on

:02:57.:03:00.

this stage. Thank you. Thank you so much. There wasn't much easing up

:03:01.:03:05.

from any of the semifinalist winners there and if you look at them,

:03:06.:03:10.

Laviai Nielsen has the fourth fastest time so she has a chance of

:03:11.:03:13.

a medal. But as she says, delighted to make the final. Really busy on

:03:14.:03:21.

the infield here this afternoon. You can see the athletes out for this

:03:22.:03:25.

high jump qualification. Morgan Lake, Britain's only athlete in this

:03:26.:03:31.

qualification process. 21 athletes, the bar, 1.8 one. A good start for

:03:32.:03:36.

Morgan Lake. That is her opening height. 1.93 as automatic qualifying

:03:37.:03:47.

or top eight. -- automatic qualifying. All top eight go

:03:48.:03:53.

through. I've got to tell you, Morgan Lake should not be afraid of

:03:54.:03:56.

any of the other athletes in the field, and she is one of the most

:03:57.:03:58.

experienced in the field at only 19. It is tiring me out, this. They are

:03:59.:04:13.

catching up. This is vast athletics, this is what we like. The crowd has

:04:14.:04:17.

been building all evening and that bodes well for the weekend. A big

:04:18.:04:22.

football match in Belgrade over the weekend but hopefully it will be

:04:23.:04:26.

pretty poor in here as well. Garcia is in the outside here. To

:04:27.:04:33.

semifinals for the guys. This guy was really impressive in the

:04:34.:04:37.

qualifying, Vedel, just 19 years of age. He has the pleasure of leading

:04:38.:04:47.

out Maslak, who finds himself in lane for him. He decides -- the

:04:48.:04:53.

defending European champion. The man from the Czech Republic, very

:04:54.:04:57.

popular. And Maslak will be hoping to qualify here. Rather different to

:04:58.:05:05.

the women's qualifying. Top four from these two races. No fastest

:05:06.:05:09.

losers. Jordier of France in lane three. And then the imposing figure

:05:10.:05:21.

of Brian Gregan in lane two. Incidentally, Ireland won this title

:05:22.:05:27.

in the shape of David Gillick, no less imposing in 2005 and 2007. He

:05:28.:05:33.

is here with Irish television. On the inside, Altintas of Turkey, who

:05:34.:05:39.

actually was quite impressive in qualification. He will be

:05:40.:05:43.

disappointed to be in lane one. So, Garcia, Vedel, Maslak, it is hard

:05:44.:05:50.

really to make out which of these two semifinals is the more

:05:51.:05:53.

difficult. There are three Spaniards and they will be very tough to beat

:05:54.:05:59.

calm the four by 400 metres. France may well have something to say about

:06:00.:06:03.

that as well, but I think Spain, the guys have all looked good. Only one

:06:04.:06:08.

of them, Samuel Garcia, is in this heat in lane six.

:06:09.:06:17.

A crowded arena here. We are just waiting for a little bit of quiet.

:06:18.:06:24.

The starter is having a conversation with his team, wanting to make sure

:06:25.:06:29.

that the track is clear, the most important thing, the speed these

:06:30.:06:33.

guys hurtle around these 200 metres. Maslak recently ran a quick 20.52,

:06:34.:06:38.

just outside his national record for the 200 metres at the Czech indoor

:06:39.:06:42.

Championships. He has got plenty of pace. The problem is with the

:06:43.:06:49.

starting mechanism down to my left. I can see them about 15 metres from

:06:50.:06:54.

me. I think someone has pulled the plug out. This team, bless them,

:06:55.:07:01.

have had a tough day. A long day and a bit of a tough day. Electronic

:07:02.:07:14.

guns, of course. Has anyone got any coins for the meter? When I say go,

:07:15.:07:29.

go. That'll do, went it? We could go back to a whistle. Bless him, the

:07:30.:07:37.

late lamented Stan Long, the first-ever fun run in Gateshead,

:07:38.:07:43.

that is what he said. When I say go, go. Everyone just stood still.

:07:44.:07:46.

Didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Does anyone have a

:07:47.:07:54.

whistle? I have. It's not helping the athletes either. Well, we have

:07:55.:08:05.

been talking about Maslak and his prowess indoors. So while we are

:08:06.:08:10.

waiting for the starters to get themselves sorted out, let's have a

:08:11.:08:16.

look at how good this man is. A little bit of a shaven head on this

:08:17.:08:22.

occasion. Those sleeves of his have become a familiar figure, of course.

:08:23.:08:27.

At the world indoor ins pot, that was another great performance. This

:08:28.:08:31.

is the year rose in Prague and he was so dominant. And then in Poland

:08:32.:08:38.

again winning. That was a big win for him. I don't think we thought he

:08:39.:08:42.

was going to win again last year but, a big performance. Well, that

:08:43.:08:50.

shows how dominant this man has been. He's top of the rankings here.

:08:51.:08:58.

44th -- 45.8 this year and is definitely the favourite. Not in the

:08:59.:09:02.

final yet, though. As to negotiate his way through this semi. Really

:09:03.:09:08.

interested to watch this young Danish runner, Vedel, in five. Away

:09:09.:09:14.

they go. Maslak, I am sure, will try to get out quickly. He had got past

:09:15.:09:19.

Vedel. Garcia have attracted down the back straight, the Spaniard in

:09:20.:09:23.

lane six, but it is Maslak quickest through the first 120 metres. He

:09:24.:09:28.

will take the break and he will be in the read. So Maslak controlling

:09:29.:09:34.

it, then Garcia, then Vedel. For go through and they are well spread

:09:35.:09:39.

out. Sorry, three go free. Geordie eight is in fourth place. There is a

:09:40.:09:43.

big gap at the moment between him and beat three airhead. Vedel is

:09:44.:09:51.

going to try to attack Garcia and Maslak looks very comfortable.

:09:52.:09:55.

Ehrlich 's Vedel. Will he get Garcia? Yes, he does. It didn't

:09:56.:10:01.

matter anyway. Three of them are going through. But, it's important

:10:02.:10:07.

in terms of positions. Certainly Maslak going through without any

:10:08.:10:11.

problems and you cannot see anybody beating him, really. Again, for the

:10:12.:10:17.

youngster, the 19-year-old, we look for new names and talents and

:10:18.:10:19.

Denmark might have a pretty good runner on their handset. Yes, two

:10:20.:10:26.

things we saw there, the obvious ability of Maslak but the talent

:10:27.:10:30.

also of Vedel taking the giant Garcia on the line. He judged that

:10:31.:10:37.

very, very well. Garcia will go well -- go through, but the line draw in

:10:38.:10:43.

the final to be confirmed. Maslak goes out so strong and then likes to

:10:44.:10:48.

hold on. He didn't really have to hold on there. He eased up over the

:10:49.:10:53.

line. Vedel getting in there ahead of Garcia on the line. A very good

:10:54.:10:59.

run by Vedel and to make it through to the final act 19 is a very big

:11:00.:11:02.

achievement. Something for Denmark to be proud of and look forward to

:11:03.:11:09.

the years to come. And a personal best for him. 46.6. Just two

:11:10.:11:15.

hundredths ahead of Garcia. Those three three to the final. Of course

:11:16.:11:19.

there can only be three. There are only six lanes in the final. The

:11:20.:11:28.

men's pole vault final is under way and this man, Lisek, the most recent

:11:29.:11:41.

person to join the six metre club. He broke a poll in his last

:11:42.:11:45.

competition. It will be interesting to see what he can clear here. 5.17

:11:46.:11:53.

made to look very easy, of course, for a man who is a six metre jumper.

:11:54.:11:58.

He has improved this season, it would seem. European bronze two

:11:59.:12:02.

years ago. Equal fourth in the Olympics last year. Let's have a

:12:03.:12:07.

look at this. Good, clean effort. Great shots there from the side of

:12:08.:12:11.

the uprights of the bar. Lisek, a great start from him.

:12:12.:12:28.

Holzdeppe has quite some pedigree and is a man to watch. Very

:12:29.:12:39.

comfortable also. It will be a tough match for the medals here at the

:12:40.:12:42.

European indoors. He would have to say this has one of the strongest

:12:43.:12:52.

fields of all events. Holzdeppe, 5.70, very comfortable. Drifting off

:12:53.:12:56.

slightly. Made some slight adjustments in order to go straight

:12:57.:12:58.

up and down. Clearance at 5.70. And this is Kudlicka, a bronze

:12:59.:13:17.

medallist before, and he also goes clear. Close to Kudlicka's seasons

:13:18.:13:29.

best of 5.7 three. He will have to improve on that to get close to the

:13:30.:13:35.

medals, it would seem. The two poles, we have to keep an eye on. We

:13:36.:13:44.

have seen one of them, Lisek. Men's pole vault is heating up. This is

:13:45.:13:52.

what happened earlier. In the warm up. No fault of his own, possibly a

:13:53.:13:57.

damaged pole. It did look as though he scratched his knee and his hand

:13:58.:14:03.

and unfortunately for him, those injuries were too much. He hasn't

:14:04.:14:10.

been able to start here. So, disappointment for the 25-year-old

:14:11.:14:15.

German. Have a look at this, at the biggest point of pressure, that poll

:14:16.:14:20.

just gives way. The shock to him, horrendous. He landed safely, but

:14:21.:14:26.

the cut to his knee, clearly too much for him to continue here at the

:14:27.:14:37.

European indoors. So, ready for the second semifinal of the men's 400

:14:38.:14:38.

metres and this is the line-up: three go through automatically. We

:14:39.:15:00.

have just seen the first semifinal. Alcoa was pretty impressive in his

:15:01.:15:10.

first round. Holzdeppe has been called some very flattering things.

:15:11.:15:18.

I think he got his tactics -- Husillos has been called some very

:15:19.:15:23.

flattering things though I think he got his tactics are little wrong.

:15:24.:15:30.

There is Tesar, took a relay bronze at the European Indoor Championships

:15:31.:15:33.

a couple of years ago in Prague, with a big helping hand from Maslak.

:15:34.:15:39.

And there is Decimus. 29 now, Decimus. Has run 46.89 this season.

:15:40.:15:45.

From the difficult first lane. We did not see Liemarvin Bonevacia.

:15:46.:16:03.

He will be a tough man to beat. Another Spaniard on the outside,

:16:04.:16:15.

Lucas Bua. A Dane, a Spaniard and a cheque athlete going through from

:16:16.:16:22.

the first semifinal. Two Spaniards here. Liemarvin Bonevacia from the

:16:23.:16:23.

Netherlands. A bit of a wait. I can see the

:16:24.:16:44.

starting gun in front of me, firing blanks. I think we are ready now. Or

:16:45.:17:01.

are we? She is looking up at him in disappointed fashion. Nobody is

:17:02.:17:09.

working on it. I think the gun is OK. There might be waiting for the

:17:10.:17:14.

shot put on the far side. They don't want to be put off by anything. A

:17:15.:17:19.

poll vault attempting the pole vault.

:17:20.:17:25.

Someone is playing the piano. This is a long wait. I am not entirely

:17:26.:17:38.

sure for what for the athletes. Diligent raking going on in the pit.

:17:39.:17:47.

Dragging it across. Let me give you a reminder of the line-up. Banish

:17:48.:17:59.

indoor champion Husillos, goes in lane three. Liemarvin Bonevacia in

:18:00.:18:12.

five and Lucas Bua in lane six. Ready. Three to go through to the

:18:13.:18:17.

final tomorrow. The semifinal of the men's 400

:18:18.:18:27.

metres. Finally they go. The build-up to

:18:28.:18:50.

this race is quite something. Lucas Bua went out very strongly in his

:18:51.:18:55.

heat. Now Liemarvin Bonevacia beginning to make a move before they

:18:56.:19:01.

break in the home straight. Desolate of France going very strongly. You

:19:02.:19:07.

can see the effort from Liemarvin Bonevacia. Three to go through.

:19:08.:19:15.

Three to go through only. Lucas Bua in a good position. Tesar is having

:19:16.:19:27.

a tussle with Liemarvin Bonevacia. Liemarvin Bonevacia in front. Lucas

:19:28.:19:30.

Bua comes through. Omelko is through. Three eventually

:19:31.:19:44.

separated themselves. There was a good race up till that point. No

:19:45.:19:49.

dancing from Liemarvin Bonevacia after this one. It was hard work and

:19:50.:19:54.

his heat. I am going to say, I am really disappointed there are no

:19:55.:20:01.

British 400-metre runners in this. The point is, it would have been

:20:02.:20:10.

great to have had somebody here. This is 47 seconds. Omelko tried to

:20:11.:20:18.

get to the front but he could not do it. Lucas Bua sat and cake. You do

:20:19.:20:22.

not often see that in a 400 metres. You should not be able to do that.

:20:23.:20:32.

-- sat and kicked. Tesar went past him. These guys are running 47.2 to

:20:33.:20:41.

get through to the final. These are the three qualifiers from the second

:20:42.:20:46.

semifinal. They go through to the final tomorrow.

:20:47.:20:53.

We are having a cracking time here in Belgrade. Maybe getting going.

:20:54.:21:02.

Throughout the weekend be having a look back at all hour yesterday. How

:21:03.:21:07.

about going back to Birmingham 2007. Albie the venue next year for the

:21:08.:21:12.

world indoors. -- that will be the venue.

:21:13.:21:24.

The men's 60 final. He got a good start. He goes away. Jason Donovan.

:21:25.:21:43.

Absolutely phenomenal! Gold and silver for Great Britain. Really

:21:44.:21:52.

kicking long. He is hanging on. A wonderful show by both these

:21:53.:21:56.

athletes. Kelly is giving it absolutely everything. The world

:21:57.:22:04.

Olympic and European champion. What radiant performance by Kelly but

:22:05.:22:12.

once again Kelly said that in finishes with another silver medal.

:22:13.:22:25.

What does Idowu have today? That is massive. Gold and silver for great

:22:26.:22:31.

written. The women's 400-metre final. -- Great Britain. Sanders, if

:22:32.:22:43.

she maintains this, it would be something special. 23.30 one.

:22:44.:22:49.

Leading on the back straight. They are coming round the top band.

:22:50.:22:54.

Looking strong, looking superb. She will come home with a gold medal for

:22:55.:23:00.

Great Britain. They'll be really close. 50.03. The European champion

:23:01.:23:09.

and a new British record for Nicola Sanders. Great Britain seven and

:23:10.:23:19.

Germany third. The tall, powerful figure goes past Steve Green. He is

:23:20.:23:23.

coming under pressure. Bronze medal position. Russia trying to hold on.

:23:24.:23:30.

The Russian has completely gone. The German will win and Great Britain

:23:31.:23:34.

will take the silver medal. The Russians made, they may, protest.

:23:35.:23:40.

There was contact. No doubt about that. Absolutely no doubt. Great

:23:41.:23:47.

Britain with their biggest medal tally at the European Championships.

:23:48.:23:57.

Some great memories. Nicola Sanders. Still remembering that performance.

:23:58.:24:01.

That is one of the best performances, certainly indoors,

:24:02.:24:04.

from a British athlete. Very impressive indeed. We saw Kelly

:24:05.:24:10.

Somerton. In the background, Jessica Ellis Hill was there. I use this

:24:11.:24:18.

thing? Good. I am definitely listening. -- are you listening? OK.

:24:19.:24:27.

On we go. Two heats of the 3000 metres for men. We did have two

:24:28.:24:41.

athletes. Some of these men had entered the 1500 initially as well

:24:42.:24:46.

and they had to declare. Not as many as the women. Ingebrigtsen, Henrik,

:24:47.:24:59.

is the oldest of the brothers, and he is starting in this one. There

:25:00.:25:15.

are two Kayas as well. We will sort it all out for you. Ali ker in this

:25:16.:25:23.

heat. The final is on Sunday. -- Kaya. Ingebrigtsen in this. Ozdemir

:25:24.:25:37.

of Turkey. I would be interested to see how Ingebrigtsen goes. Running

:25:38.:25:41.

towards us with the shades on, as ever. What a talented family! The

:25:42.:25:54.

youngster is really good as well. They say that Yacoub is the most

:25:55.:26:03.

talented. A lot of distance for the 3,000-metre guys. The two brothers,

:26:04.:26:11.

Henrik and Philip, who will be seeing in Belgrade. They were in

:26:12.:26:15.

South Africa training and popped back home. Neither have raced at all

:26:16.:26:22.

coming in. Henrik has had surgery recently on his foot and has been

:26:23.:26:30.

recovering from that, apparently. That sees some footage of him

:26:31.:26:34.

training. At altitude he looked as if he was going well, going strong.

:26:35.:26:44.

He was carrying a little bit. It is hard. We joke about distance runners

:26:45.:26:50.

it sometimes noticeable that he looks in shape he looks good. Like I

:26:51.:26:57.

said, he does train very high volume for what you would class as a middle

:26:58.:27:01.

distance athlete. If he picks up an injury and is not able to do

:27:02.:27:07.

anything, it is a big change in terms of his calorific expenditure

:27:08.:27:11.

in his training routine. I'm kind of glad to see he was eating healthily

:27:12.:27:15.

to get overly injury and then concentrating on getting back into

:27:16.:27:19.

shape afterwards. I really do not know why they have not got these

:27:20.:27:25.

guys... They got them on the start line and have apologised for the

:27:26.:27:28.

delay. They are running late. They asked them to go off and job a

:27:29.:27:33.

little bit. If you are just joining us, we still have the commendation

:27:34.:27:37.

of the women's pentathlon to come after these 3,000-metre heats.

:27:38.:27:43.

800-metre, the gruelling event after a tough five events for them today.

:27:44.:27:50.

The first two track finals of these championships. The men's and the

:27:51.:28:00.

women's 60 metres hurdles. A pretty good crowd in now. The upper stands

:28:01.:28:07.

are probably two thirds full. The lower stands, a lot of the teams get

:28:08.:28:11.

the chance to come and fill those. Lots of fans coming and following

:28:12.:28:16.

their own country. A fair few British fans here. While we are

:28:17.:28:33.

waiting... Great Britain's Morgan Lake has fouled once at 86 -- 1.8

:28:34.:28:40.

six. She will have to clear this and more to progress to the final

:28:41.:28:47.

tomorrow. Second attempt is better. Better indeed but a failure at the

:28:48.:28:51.

first attempt is not what she would have wanted. 1.93 is the auto

:28:52.:29:03.

qualifier. She is going to need 1.903I would suspect. Carrying a

:29:04.:29:08.

failure but still in the competition. -- 1.93, I would

:29:09.:29:21.

suspect. I think they are ready. We are. I am really not sure what the

:29:22.:29:28.

delay is yet again. I think the athletes are ready, the cameramen

:29:29.:29:33.

are ready. Henrik is having a little look behind. He celebrated his 26th

:29:34.:29:38.

birthday recently. Trademark glasses and moustache. If he ever brings out

:29:39.:29:47.

a T-shirt or something... He would put glasses and a moustache on it.

:29:48.:29:54.

He likes to hide his emotions away from all the competitors. Either

:29:55.:29:56.

that or he just likes to look cool. OK, please, I think we are ready.

:29:57.:30:18.

Just to give you a view stats around this, there are plenty people who

:30:19.:30:22.

could have come here and performed well. Not everyone decides to

:30:23.:30:33.

contest these championships, and a lot of those in the top ten

:30:34.:30:52.

are not here. The Russian athlete is not allowed to compete. The times

:30:53.:30:55.

are not that important though. This 3000m, I think it will be a good

:30:56.:31:00.

race. Qualification will not be easy. You get the good mix of 1500m

:31:01.:31:08.

talent, like fingerprints and, succeeded by his brother in that

:31:09.:31:22.

event. We will see him later. , then you have got youngsters, and the

:31:23.:31:25.

cross-country talent of people like this man here, Ali Kaya. He is the

:31:26.:31:35.

holder of this at the moment. He chose not to contest the

:31:36.:31:38.

cross-country this year, leaving that to his brother. Should be due

:31:39.:31:44.

the transferring thing? No, we have done it plenty of times. A former

:31:45.:31:51.

Kenyan running for Turkey. That rule is currently suspended, whilst they

:31:52.:31:57.

sort it out at last. So, how did is Henrik Ingebrigtsen going to be? We

:31:58.:32:06.

will find out. 3000m, heat one. Indoors, it is 15 laps of the track.

:32:07.:32:13.

It wouldn't always be an event in which the distance runners want to

:32:14.:32:19.

take it on right from the beginning, so they might hold back. Although

:32:20.:32:24.

Ali Kaya moves out straightaway, because Ingebrigtsen doesn't want to

:32:25.:32:28.

take it out too fast. He has got bored hanging around, I think. He

:32:29.:32:34.

probably got a bit frustrated. You see them pushing and shoving on the

:32:35.:32:37.

start line and then they'll start jogging down the back straight and

:32:38.:32:42.

lose the position they had gained. I think I decided he had had enough of

:32:43.:32:47.

this, I will run at a decent pace, string it out a bit and see who

:32:48.:32:52.

would come with him. The answer at the moment is, nobody. He is happy

:32:53.:32:58.

to run his race and they are happy to see if he will drift back towards

:32:59.:33:06.

them or will they just way to content for the three automatic

:33:07.:33:11.

qualifying positions and let Ali Kaya wear himself out of it for the

:33:12.:33:16.

final? He is on European record pace, but this is interesting,

:33:17.:33:23.

because the other Spaniards, again, a cross-country exponent, 23 years

:33:24.:33:27.

of age, probably wants a good pace, but he is now leading the pack.

:33:28.:33:33.

Eventually -- essentially two races. If they let Ali Kaya go, he could

:33:34.:33:40.

slow down, win the race, and that is one place gone. Then the others are

:33:41.:33:43.

running for second, third and fourth. So effectively two races at

:33:44.:33:49.

the moment. This man is leading. Ali Kaya will not slow down. Well, he is

:33:50.:33:54.

already slowing down a little bit. He seemed to gain that both very,

:33:55.:34:02.

very quickly. He doesn't look as if he is moving as quickly as he was in

:34:03.:34:08.

the beginning when he was at 62 second 400. He has not slowed off

:34:09.:34:12.

much though, only two seconds, to give the other guys a chance to

:34:13.:34:16.

start working back towards him. He has slowed down, they have slow down

:34:17.:34:21.

even more. Although it looks strung out behind him, they are letting him

:34:22.:34:26.

get away here and he has now, as you say, after the first 400 that was

:34:27.:34:33.

fast, he has definitely slowed down to kind of 62, something like that.

:34:34.:34:40.

Yes, two minutes 30 43 1000 metres. So now Mayo leading Ingebrigtsen

:34:41.:34:46.

behind him and the Swedish athlete in third place. They are all now in

:34:47.:34:53.

a nice line. It is better than jogging and jostling, so most of

:34:54.:35:00.

them will be enjoying this, but it is a big risk for the Spaniard at

:35:01.:35:04.

the front of that group. The more laps he spends out there and the

:35:05.:35:10.

less he can drop people, the more he put himself under pressure. Yes, and

:35:11.:35:16.

he will be aware of that Felix at the screen. He will be pleased if

:35:17.:35:22.

more people drop off. Not too much damage do it at the moment though,

:35:23.:35:27.

particularly as he has Ingebrigtsen sitting on his shoulder. He is

:35:28.:35:31.

probably very happy with this, comfortable with a pace which is

:35:32.:35:34.

moving along enough to string people out but he doesn't have to expend

:35:35.:35:39.

much energy, saving that for the final when he can use his speed to

:35:40.:35:46.

qualify for the three automatic qualifying spaces. The gap is not

:35:47.:35:53.

getting any bigger now and Ali Kaya is having a little look around. He

:35:54.:35:57.

might be feeling that 62nd first lap. The others are gathering

:35:58.:36:04.

themselves. Isn't it funny, Powell Mayo is saying, give me a bit of

:36:05.:36:10.

help here and they are saying, no, you set yourself up. You did it. I

:36:11.:36:16.

think the gap is actually closing. It has definitely closed from 400

:36:17.:36:20.

metres ago. As you said, Mayo did look like he was saying to the other

:36:21.:36:26.

guys, somebody, come through, but nobody is interested at all. They

:36:27.:36:31.

are very happy for him to be the unofficial pacemaker. Pulling them

:36:32.:36:34.

back towards Ali Kaya. I'm not sure what he thought he was going to

:36:35.:36:39.

achieve that. If he wanted to create a buffer, he needs to maintain it,

:36:40.:36:44.

otherwise he has wasted all of the energy he used setting himself up

:36:45.:36:58.

with a 62nd 400. Well, if the gap of about four seconds. It was a bit

:36:59.:37:02.

more than that. He is getting a bit anxious out there. Once they come

:37:03.:37:09.

three 2000, then with 1000 metres left, that is a big gap. But they

:37:10.:37:14.

could go just one second lap quicker and close that gap quite quickly.

:37:15.:37:20.

Ali Kaya is going to pass through 2000 metres in five minutes 17

:37:21.:37:28.

seconds. That is much slower than the first 1000 metres. The others

:37:29.:37:33.

have slowed as well. But, they have just got sign of him and they might

:37:34.:37:37.

-- him and they might start to reel in. We now see the Italian athlete

:37:38.:37:47.

come round and finally take over from Mayo, drifting off the pace

:37:48.:37:50.

that they wanted him to maintain to get back towards Ali Kaya. Ali Kaya

:37:51.:37:57.

now, as he sees four laps to go, two laps of an outdoor track, he knows

:37:58.:38:02.

that he came maintain and cruise for this next lap and then start winding

:38:03.:38:06.

it up with 600 to go and he should be safe. So, it is the first four

:38:07.:38:14.

and the four fastest losers. Razine is leading the chase. Then Mayo.

:38:15.:38:20.

Then Ingebrigtsen. Then the Austrian, tall figure behind them.

:38:21.:38:23.

Ali Kaya now with a lead of only about two seconds as they come round

:38:24.:38:28.

with 600 metres to go and they are going to reel him in. Does he have

:38:29.:38:34.

anything left here? They have got to get closer and closer. Ingebrigtsen

:38:35.:38:38.

getting ready to launch his big effort. Ozdemir is that the back of

:38:39.:38:42.

that group as well. They have all got a chance here. They are

:38:43.:38:46.

definitely going to reel him in and he has to react. The group that are

:38:47.:38:51.

reeling him in, there are six guys in that group, so they will have to

:38:52.:38:57.

hope they will be the fastest losers, whatever happens to Ali Kaya

:38:58.:39:01.

as they reel him in. Ingebrigtsen starting to get himself into a

:39:02.:39:04.

position where he can react and cover any moves made. They haven't

:39:05.:39:09.

really launched a big kick in this group but there are four of them and

:39:10.:39:13.

there are only for who can go through, so if all four of them were

:39:14.:39:18.

too real Ali Kaya in, he would have to wait and see if he was a fastest

:39:19.:39:23.

loser, because his legs look heavy. There are only five metres between

:39:24.:39:27.

him and the chasing group. It is Ali Kaya leading, then Razine,

:39:28.:39:38.

Ingebrigtsen, Ali Kaya tries to react but one, two, three go past.

:39:39.:39:45.

Ingebrigtsen is not going away here. Just controlling it. Leanderson is

:39:46.:39:50.

on his shoulder, Razine looking. Mayo- up here and Ali Kaya cannot

:39:51.:39:55.

respond. Ingebrigtsen have a look over his shoulder, sees everything

:39:56.:40:05.

is fine, and, well, Ali Kaya, if you run a 62nd -- a 60 second first lap,

:40:06.:40:16.

he is a very good runner, of course he is, he is the defending champion,

:40:17.:40:21.

but he is going to have an anxious wait to see whether he has a chance

:40:22.:40:29.

for one of the fastest four paces. There is no reason why five or six

:40:30.:40:35.

people couldn't go faster in the second heat though. They absolutely

:40:36.:40:38.

cleared and that is the advantage of being in the second heat. I wonder

:40:39.:40:42.

whether Ali Kaya didn't come into this in the shape he has previously

:40:43.:40:46.

been in. I wonder if he thought if he did get outkicked, he would have

:40:47.:40:54.

a better chance of qualifying at the fastest qualifier. He got knocked

:40:55.:40:57.

and that the changes momentum but I don't think he was ever going to be

:40:58.:41:04.

able to keep up with them. Mayo was particularly happy because he was

:41:05.:41:08.

the guy who was pacesetting and looked like he was feeling the

:41:09.:41:12.

strain. This is a big step up for him, into senior races, and to make

:41:13.:41:24.

a final at 3000m as well. Well, going in the next heat is Nick

:41:25.:41:28.

Goolab, some of you watching in Birmingham may remember him. Running

:41:29.:41:35.

in the 5000 that, the race run by -- won by Mo Farah, but he chose to run

:41:36.:41:40.

the 3000 within that. He was trying to impress the qualifiers, get the

:41:41.:41:45.

standard. The selectors that he had done enough, they Goolab here to

:41:46.:41:50.

take his chance. As Steve and Paula were saying, they know the time is

:41:51.:41:54.

required now. Nick Goolab knows he is capable of running that. We shall

:41:55.:42:01.

see how he goes. Some very strong runners in this one as well. Ebrahim

:42:02.:42:12.

as well. So, work cut out for Goolab. Looking at the time is

:42:13.:42:20.

coming in from that first heat. What will they require to go through?

:42:21.:42:24.

Eight minutes four seconds at the moment. There is the result at the

:42:25.:42:32.

moment. Ali Kaya's time is the important one at the moment.

:42:33.:42:36.

Essentially, eight men could go faster than seven minutes 56 and go

:42:37.:42:42.

through. They just need some good steady pace early on and job done. I

:42:43.:42:51.

am not confident that this race is runny -- this race is ready to go.

:42:52.:42:55.

The runners look ready but we have seen of late that races have a habit

:42:56.:43:00.

of being held. I think we are just about ready. We can see the Spanish

:43:01.:43:08.

athlete, a former Moroccan, who will be very strong as well. Serbian

:43:09.:43:19.

involvement for Makevic. And Thomas Carter, the Irish athlete, who ran

:43:20.:43:29.

lower than the qualifying time in Cambridge, Massachusetts a few weeks

:43:30.:43:34.

ago. He will be hoping for qualification. Four will go through

:43:35.:43:39.

automatically and for fastest losers. My father is called Tom

:43:40.:43:46.

Carter but I'm pretty sure that's not him. It would be huge surprise

:43:47.:43:51.

to see a 74-year-old in lane two, but don't rule it out. He is hugely

:43:52.:44:04.

competitive. Richard Ringer, the German, he will certainly be

:44:05.:44:05.

competitive. There is Mechaal, and a legion

:44:06.:44:20.

strand ree, although he has been living in Spain since 1995. --

:44:21.:44:31.

another allegiance trance very. And there is Ibrahimov, formerly of

:44:32.:44:37.

Ethiopia. Someone else who has transferred. And there will be

:44:38.:44:41.

slightly more noise for Makevic. Here we go. Serbian indoor

:44:42.:44:51.

record-holder over 5000 metres. Studying at the University of

:44:52.:44:56.

Louisiana. That's a much better crowd in this evening.

:44:57.:45:04.

So, Nick Goolab, the Belgrave Harrier is there in the second rank

:45:05.:45:13.

of athletes alongside the youngster, Crippa, who you might recognise him.

:45:14.:45:18.

He has a very good cross-country record, Crippa. Twice European

:45:19.:45:21.

junior cross country champion. And going here in this men's 3000m, the

:45:22.:45:29.

second of the first-round heats, effectively semi-finals, for

:45:30.:45:33.

Sunday's final. Four to go through automatically and the four fastest

:45:34.:45:35.

losers. Paula Radcliffe will be keeping a very keen eye on the pace

:45:36.:45:39.

as well, because that was a brave, crazy effort in the first race, but

:45:40.:45:44.

it did spin it along at a decent lick for some of them, but certainly

:45:45.:45:48.

an opportunity for some to go through here at a fastest loser.

:45:49.:45:53.

Yes, there is a huge opportunity as we see Arras Kaya go through to the

:45:54.:45:57.

fund but at a much more sensible pace. He is trying to get it moving,

:45:58.:46:01.

which is really what Ali Kaya should have done. These guys have the

:46:02.:46:04.

advantage of knowing the time they have do run. They are well capable

:46:05.:46:08.

of working together, taking turns that the band and keeping it ticking

:46:09.:46:15.

over and moving along about 753, 754 pace, being able to come to be

:46:16.:46:16.

qualified. Nine in this field have gone below

:46:17.:46:28.

eight minutes. Kaya leading them out. Gulag sitting back. They are --

:46:29.:46:39.

Nick Goolab sitting back. He is in about ninth position at the moment.

:46:40.:46:46.

Not blisteringly quick. They know exactly what they have to do. They

:46:47.:46:51.

know the pace they have to go to run under eight minutes and take their

:46:52.:46:56.

chances. There are a few guys in that pack hoping someone's nerve

:46:57.:47:00.

will crack before theirs to get the pace moving a bit. Aras Kaya is

:47:01.:47:06.

sitting there, moving enough to react little bit of making it

:47:07.:47:11.

difficult for anyone to come round and start to wind up the pace. You

:47:12.:47:20.

may have seen the high jumpers on the infield. The hugely impressive

:47:21.:47:32.

Olympic champion from Rio. The bar now 1.90. Oh, yes. 2017 looks it

:47:33.:47:41.

will go in the same way as 16 did for the Spanish impressive athlete

:47:42.:47:52.

indeed. Fourth attempt at the Olympics she won gold. A perfect

:47:53.:47:56.

clean sheet so far. The only athlete so far to be clear at 1.90 into

:47:57.:48:03.

first place. Some treatment on her shoulder. Morgan Lake to match the

:48:04.:48:10.

same height. Morgan Lake goes clear. I said questions were being asked.

:48:11.:48:15.

It looks as though she has the answers. Morgan Lake, world junior

:48:16.:48:20.

champion in this event. Clear at 1.90.

:48:21.:48:30.

Simic from Croatia, also clear. The automatic qualification is 1.93 for

:48:31.:48:50.

the final. At the moment Morgan Lake is in it along with Simic and Ruth

:48:51.:49:04.

Beita. Morgan Lake currently in third place. While that was going on

:49:05.:49:12.

Nick Delap made move. The Kenyon is out in front. Nick Goolab made quite

:49:13.:49:24.

a big move to lift the pace. He went to the front. Mechaal had gone to

:49:25.:49:31.

the front before that but did not pick it up enough. Nick Goolab was

:49:32.:49:39.

conscious of the time. They went through a lot quicker in the first

:49:40.:49:43.

heat. Still quicker than 2.45 of that they do need to get moving and

:49:44.:49:47.

keep moving. Now it seems that three, four will help a little bit

:49:48.:49:54.

to keep the pace moving. Mechaal just steadying himself. Six and a

:49:55.:50:02.

half laps remaining. Nick Goolab in a decent position. Four will go

:50:03.:50:07.

through automatically goes back is the ideal scenario for the Belgrave

:50:08.:50:11.

Harrier was that just about at the qualifying standard. He was given

:50:12.:50:15.

the nod after his effort in the 5000 metres race. Mechaal in second

:50:16.:50:22.

place. A high-quality athlete running for Spain now. Aris Caer, I

:50:23.:50:32.

do not know if he is trying to do with team-mate a favour by keeping

:50:33.:50:36.

it slow but he gets at the front and slows it down again. I think we will

:50:37.:50:42.

see them come up to the 2,000-metre mark. They are definitely slower

:50:43.:50:49.

than the pack. They need to be in with a chance for fastest losers got

:50:50.:50:53.

a bit silly that these guys to let themselves be dictated to. Kaya will

:50:54.:51:00.

be able to kick. They could have a much better chance by moving past

:51:01.:51:06.

him making it a long run for home. The pack had started to stretch out.

:51:07.:51:13.

Someone down. Is it the Swede who has gone down? That was the danger.

:51:14.:51:19.

Icahn is a teen to close together as the pace dropped and Ek has paid the

:51:20.:51:28.

price. Nick Goolab is still in fifth place. At the moment, Ibrahimov is

:51:29.:51:45.

in the front. Cruel fortune for Ek. He will try to complete the race

:51:46.:51:48.

anyway. They will be looking at that as the race goes on. Mechaal starts

:51:49.:51:58.

to lift the pace again. Nick Goolab came out of the fall OK and was

:51:59.:52:01.

ahead of it. He was not affected like other runners. Tomas Cotter had

:52:02.:52:06.

to hurdle in front of him and did well to stay on his speed. I think

:52:07.:52:11.

he has been affected by it because he is drifting backwards. That bunch

:52:12.:52:16.

had got away from it as a bunch of six in which four can automatically

:52:17.:52:20.

qualify. The other two need to run faster. It was roundabout 8.04 for

:52:21.:52:31.

the slower of the fastest losers. Four now pulling away from Nick

:52:32.:52:37.

Goolab. Four going through automatically, four fastest losers.

:52:38.:52:41.

The four fastest losers from the first heat, 7.56, 7.59 and 8.0 four.

:52:42.:52:55.

The Swede went down. These four have separated themselves. Mechaal is

:52:56.:53:00.

able to look around. They are reasonably comfortable. It is

:53:01.:53:06.

Ibrahimov, Kaya, Mechaal and Richard ringer. They are clear. What does

:53:07.:53:15.

Nick Goolab have? Nick Goolab is in sixth place at the moment. The

:53:16.:53:22.

victory goes to Ibrahimov. Crippa finishes quickly in fifth. Nick

:53:23.:53:32.

gulag comes across in 8.0 to. I think he is out. Unfortunately, he

:53:33.:53:38.

just could not respond. Crippa saw the clock and kicked as far as he

:53:39.:53:42.

could. I think he has sneaked comfortably in. I do not think that

:53:43.:53:50.

Nick Goolab will be quick enough. He gave it everything he had but did

:53:51.:53:54.

not have enough left on the last lap to build to hang on to the

:53:55.:53:57.

coat-tails of Crippa ahead of him and keep fighting right to the line

:53:58.:54:01.

for the fastest loser qualifying position. The four outright

:54:02.:54:11.

qualifiers are comfortable. Richard Ringer looking good. They were quite

:54:12.:54:16.

happy to let Kaya run hard for the line. He is given the unfortunate

:54:17.:54:23.

position of fifth fastest loser. -- Ibrahimov run hard for the line.

:54:24.:54:28.

They might make it a 13 man final if the Swede makes a complaint. It will

:54:29.:54:32.

have a look that incident again when the Swede went down. Nick Goolab

:54:33.:54:37.

just missing out in the men's 3000 metres. That was unfortunate for

:54:38.:54:46.

Nick Goolab. He gave it his very best shot. He has had the time of

:54:47.:54:55.

7.53 in Birmingham and was unable to reproduce that here was missing out

:54:56.:55:03.

on the final in the 3000 metres. So, not to be for Nick Goolab full study

:55:04.:55:07.

is not going through to the final tomorrow. -- Nick Goolab. Let's hear

:55:08.:55:16.

from him now. Thank you. I suppose a sense of disappointment. You had the

:55:17.:55:20.

final within your grasp and it was taken at the last. I did not have

:55:21.:55:26.

the change of gears. I tried to go with it but did not have the gears.

:55:27.:55:29.

I could not react as quickly as them. Disappointing but it was good

:55:30.:55:37.

to make the team anyway. Tell me what it was like for you being on

:55:38.:55:41.

the team and being on the stage for the first time. Coming in knowing

:55:42.:55:45.

what you had to do in second heat. When I went to the lead, I tried to

:55:46.:55:51.

kick out but my legs were not going anywhere. I was running as far as I

:55:52.:56:00.

could. I tried everything and ran to my absolute best. Unfortunately it

:56:01.:56:03.

was not good enough. I suppose you want more. Definitely. Sunday will

:56:04.:56:11.

not happen but I will have to go away and train hard and try to be

:56:12.:56:17.

better. All the best going forward. Thank you. Take care. The result of

:56:18.:56:24.

the second semifinal in the men's 3000 metres, through to the final

:56:25.:56:32.

automatically go Ibrahimov, Kaya and Mechaal. Nick Goolab just misses out

:56:33.:56:45.

on the final. I am delighted to say I am more relaxed. Too much

:56:46.:56:49.

sprinting between the studio and the commentary box. I am too old for

:56:50.:56:53.

that sort of thing was that I am delighted to say joining me here is

:56:54.:56:59.

Gabby Logan. Where have you been? Obviously we are in the middle of

:57:00.:57:02.

the Six Nations. I got on the plane to Edinburgh and it's not a Six

:57:03.:57:07.

Nations weekend. I made it here eventually. Only joking. I wanted to

:57:08.:57:12.

watch from home and see how it was all going. I am delighted to be here

:57:13.:57:20.

and be part of the team. I did watch a bit this morning and was following

:57:21.:57:24.

on social media this afternoon. The things I want to pick up on, a

:57:25.:57:29.

slightly slow start in terms of the technical gremlins in the works. A

:57:30.:57:36.

few gremlins. A lot of false starts from the morning session. Some

:57:37.:57:41.

faulty starts as well. Things were rough and rugged. Finally, good

:57:42.:57:45.

performances have started to take shape. The pentathlon is coming up

:57:46.:57:52.

to its denouement shortly. The Olympic champion has been smashing

:57:53.:57:56.

everything all day and performing like that champion. She is walking

:57:57.:58:00.

around like the Olympic champion and everyone knows it. Some good

:58:01.:58:06.

performances from her. 1.96 and indoor personal best. She is really

:58:07.:58:11.

excelling. In terms of schools, she is not that far away from being a

:58:12.:58:17.

5000 points score. It'll be interesting to see how she

:58:18.:58:20.

approaches the 800 metres. She will have to run a to score 5000 points.

:58:21.:58:29.

That will make her the best ever, or maybe second best ever. Will she

:58:30.:58:32.

settled for a medal or push herself for the score? It is the second heat

:58:33.:58:39.

when the medallists will appear. Plenty more coming up for you this

:58:40.:58:44.

evening was we could see the first medal of the Chapel chips for Great

:58:45.:58:47.

Britain. It is the men's hurdles final. -- the championships. Loads

:58:48.:58:59.

to look forward to. Andy Pozzi running three of the fastest times

:59:00.:59:03.

this year. He has absolutely found his form. He has been beset with

:59:04.:59:08.

injuries are never been able to get the consistency. Is this where it

:59:09.:59:14.

starts? We have Tom Lancashire going in the 1500 metre race just after

:59:15.:59:20.

6:15 p.m.. Then it is the women's 60-metre hurdles final. Medals on

:59:21.:59:26.

offer this evening here in Belgrade. We're indoors, so it makes no

:59:27.:59:29.

difference. One thing that struck me when I got off the plane, apparently

:59:30.:59:35.

it is summer here. I have been looking all week, what is the

:59:36.:59:41.

attempt to like? It has been 22, 19 degrees that this is the place to

:59:42.:59:51.

be. Inside, it is absolutely clear that Thiam is the top athlete to

:59:52.:00:00.

watch. We were looking at athletes and she was the interloper, who came

:00:01.:00:06.

in and performed with such poise and such maturity through the whole

:00:07.:00:11.

Olympic Games. With high PB is we knew she had this talent, this war

:00:12.:00:15.

damage was now bringing to the big stage. We have seen the change.

:00:16.:00:24.

Horribly a year early. -- probably a year early. If she had stayed here

:00:25.:00:29.

probably just would have got the goal. Much better hurdling. This was

:00:30.:00:35.

one of her weaker events. Running much better with her trail leg. That

:00:36.:00:41.

kind of thing. Hopefully if she continues that then you will start

:00:42.:00:45.

to see her pick up more points. Let's not forget, she is a 6800

:00:46.:00:51.

point Getafe. 7000 points is the magic figure. In the high jump she

:00:52.:00:57.

has not been doing a regular high jump. She has been rotating. Once

:00:58.:01:02.

you know how to high jump, it you high jump. This is her strength, in

:01:03.:01:06.

the throwing, a phenomenal athlete that this is the second round throat

:01:07.:01:10.

and she throws it out way beyond 15 metres. -- throat. The first round

:01:11.:01:19.

just opened up. The third round she got anxious, which is the youth in

:01:20.:01:20.

her. guard and she's got fantastic

:01:21.:01:28.

technique. She has long levers. It works for her. Where she has been

:01:29.:01:35.

improving as her running. She looked lacklustre on the running, for some

:01:36.:01:39.

way. Maybe it's moving from one event to be next on the day, I don't

:01:40.:01:44.

know. She was behind the board on the first. That would have been a

:01:45.:01:47.

much better jump than the one she ended up with. Which was, what,

:01:48.:01:57.

6.36? 6.37? And of course, Katarina Johnson-Thompson wasn't going to be

:01:58.:02:03.

appearing hair as multi-event, as she's injured, which is

:02:04.:02:07.

disappointing for her as the defending champion. I think it was

:02:08.:02:12.

sensible for her not to come because she has banks drink problem, so to

:02:13.:02:19.

come here and maybe stressed that just for the high jump, that would

:02:20.:02:28.

be. But Morgan Lake is here and not performing in the Hat Aplon. Again,

:02:29.:02:32.

focusing on the high jump qualification at the moment. Is that

:02:33.:02:38.

a surprising decision for you? I think there is some scar tissue in

:02:39.:02:42.

there for her mentally. We have seen have allowed a couple of times

:02:43.:02:48.

through injury. She has changed her training setup. She is working in

:02:49.:02:51.

Loughborough. I am sure she is taking lots of new instruction and

:02:52.:02:55.

that sometimes takes a little while to embed. I think it's a sensible

:02:56.:02:59.

decision, coming here just to long jump. She long jumped out in Rio

:03:00.:03:04.

last year. It's an event she was unique -- world junior champion in

:03:05.:03:08.

and she is comfortable in this arena. Going forward, yes I would

:03:09.:03:18.

like to see her do more heptathlon, she has some serious unfinished

:03:19.:03:23.

business there. I was reading that she is doing psychology at

:03:24.:03:26.

Loughborough and not only do that she is enjoying something to

:03:27.:03:30.

distract them mentally, but psychology is helping her understand

:03:31.:03:33.

herself better as well. I think she put a lot of pressure on her own

:03:34.:03:38.

shoulders with the expectation, being part of the heptathlon

:03:39.:03:41.

dynasty, thinking that she had to go out there and can -- perform, and

:03:42.:03:47.

yes she did, but it was high expectations too soon. She is still

:03:48.:03:51.

only 19 and when she starts feeling good about herself, I think shall be

:03:52.:03:58.

great in the heptathlon. She jumped 1.90 in qualifying today, so she

:03:59.:04:03.

will get a huge amount of confidence from that. Pushing herself towards a

:04:04.:04:09.

medal, maybe? A medal here would be a tall order but getting through to

:04:10.:04:13.

the final, being confident and having confidence will be an

:04:14.:04:21.

important thing. We don't want to push her to far. 1.93 would be the

:04:22.:04:29.

automatic qualification and that's close to her personal best. The

:04:30.:04:33.

thing with youth, a she's been doing a lot of sport in terms of

:04:34.:04:37.

heptathlon for a long time, so she's probably much more mature than we

:04:38.:04:43.

give her credit for. I know she is 19, a chronological figure, but

:04:44.:04:45.

she's been in the senior team quite a bit, though she knows her way

:04:46.:04:50.

around. Both the athletes, Katarina and Morgan have got new coaching

:04:51.:04:56.

regimes and I think Denise is right. It takes a couple of winters for

:04:57.:05:00.

that to bed in. Then let's give them a chance. Let's not ask too much of

:05:01.:05:06.

them too soon. I understand Katarina is enjoying her new setup? Yes, I

:05:07.:05:14.

think she is in a happier place now. The new setup, as Tony said, it will

:05:15.:05:18.

take time. There's a lot for her to work on, even though she is coming

:05:19.:05:23.

into the season knowing what she would like to achieve, what she know

:05:24.:05:27.

she can achieve, and it's about marrying BT. Her physical state and

:05:28.:05:32.

her mental state of bringing that to the fore. She will be watching

:05:33.:05:36.

what's going on here in pentathlon and will be chomping at the big

:05:37.:05:41.

thing, I want to be out there. What can we expect from Heard this year?

:05:42.:05:50.

-- can we expect from her this year? London is an amazing stage from her

:05:51.:06:05.

-- for her. I think we haven't seen enough from her. She is in a good

:06:06.:06:11.

place with the scoring she has been doing. Going to the Olympic Games as

:06:12.:06:16.

young as she did and now she has been to two. What I have seen

:06:17.:06:21.

indoors in terms of long jump, she would come out with very tired legs,

:06:22.:06:27.

so a little bit fresher, yes, she has long jumped further, but it is

:06:28.:06:31.

difficult to make any assumptions with whatever else is going on with

:06:32.:06:35.

the growing, with everything else, but she knows what she is doing. She

:06:36.:06:40.

has been in the event long enough. Now is the time to step up. The

:06:41.:06:45.

event is wide open for her to get in there and make medals and podium. Of

:06:46.:06:50.

course, Nafi Thiam will be going in the final event of that heptathlon

:06:51.:06:57.

very shortly. There is a great pole vault competition going on. Bring us

:06:58.:07:04.

up to speed. It has been pretty spectacular so far. We have seen

:07:05.:07:11.

breaking pals in the warm up. This man, from Greece, has been

:07:12.:07:15.

spectacular as well. This was 5.85 metres, a national record for him.

:07:16.:07:24.

He is in second place at the moment. We have got champions indoors and

:07:25.:07:31.

outdoors competing. Peter Lisette, a six meter man from this winter, the

:07:32.:07:39.

poll as we see the Greek go clear with that new national record. What

:07:40.:07:44.

a time to do that. That is likely to get him onto the podium, I would

:07:45.:07:54.

think, looking down at the failures. The German and French athletes are

:07:55.:07:57.

both out with three failures at this height. And here is Lisek, looking

:07:58.:08:11.

very determined indeed. Got a big back support on, I noticed. 5.8

:08:12.:08:18.

five. Oh, yes. He is the man in form. I think he's quite pleased

:08:19.:08:25.

with that. That's his first-time clearance at 5.85 and because of the

:08:26.:08:28.

count back, that takes him into the lead. Let's have a look at this.

:08:29.:08:35.

Very tall. That back support, you can see that black band around his

:08:36.:08:40.

waist. He is a very tall man, with the kind of forces going through his

:08:41.:08:45.

body. As a tall pole vault, he carries a long pole, strongman, very

:08:46.:08:50.

athletic. He knows he is six metres at best. 5.85 might be enough for

:08:51.:08:55.

gold here though. Maybe a change of polls of that as he gets ready for

:08:56.:08:58.

the next height of 5.90. So, the shot putt was concluded

:08:59.:09:21.

earlier. A big shout from her. A silver medallist two years ago.

:09:22.:09:34.

And the bronze medallist from two years ago. A switch of places. She

:09:35.:09:44.

upgraded with a lifetime best. That was 18.36 metres for the Bulgarian

:09:45.:09:54.

athlete. So, bronze switches to Silver, a slight upgrade, but behind

:09:55.:10:05.

this athlete, dominant from the start, Marton. The final throw of

:10:06.:10:12.

the competition for hire and way beyond 19 metres. A world lead for

:10:13.:10:17.

the Hungarian. A successful defence of her Indo-European title. --

:10:18.:10:27.

indoor European title. Well, a successful defence is always a

:10:28.:10:33.

pleasure and Marton of Hungary has done just that with a world lead to

:10:34.:10:43.

beat. What a great day for her. Right then. We saw Lisek go clear at

:10:44.:10:53.

5.8 five. This is his team-mate. He is going for the same height, with

:10:54.:10:59.

two fouls. Third attempt, goes clear. Well, we said the two Polish

:11:00.:11:06.

athletes would be contenders for the title

:11:07.:11:12.

and the European silver medallist, a surprise admittedly, have got some

:11:13.:11:24.

championship pedigree, showing us what he is made of in the past and

:11:25.:11:31.

he has shown it again. His last chance to deliver and he did. 5.78

:11:32.:11:35.

what is this pars-mac best but he has improved that with his 5.85

:11:36.:11:43.

clearance. Five athletes remain. The medals, still to be decided. The

:11:44.:11:53.

final of the Habitat: is upon us and Nafi Thiam has just ran out into the

:11:54.:12:03.

arena -- the final of the heptathlon is upon us. The question is, will

:12:04.:12:11.

she go for broke and try to smash records, or will Ivona Dadic just

:12:12.:12:19.

trot round and take the plaudits. You know what, I say to my athletes,

:12:20.:12:26.

you seldom stand on the brink of opportunity. Going over 5000 points

:12:27.:12:34.

is not easy. For years, Carolyn applied didn't manage it. Would it

:12:35.:12:39.

tell us something about her at the competitor, whether she does go for

:12:40.:12:42.

the 5000 points and goes hell for leather? I think you are right. I

:12:43.:12:47.

think she should go for it. If you have the opportunity, you are in the

:12:48.:12:52.

mix, that close proximity that you can't just sniffed that 5000, you

:12:53.:12:58.

have got to go for it. OK, well let's head to our commentary box.

:12:59.:13:07.

Andrew Cotter is calling this one. There is far cat. She is in third

:13:08.:13:12.

place at the moment. She is in a battle with Dadic. They are

:13:13.:13:17.

separated by just 20 points, about 1.5 seconds. This woman, Nafi Thiam

:13:18.:13:21.

is a long way clear and it is all about her chasing down the 5000

:13:22.:13:26.

points. This is not her strongest event by any stretch of the

:13:27.:13:31.

imagination but if she runs two minutes 15, she will get close to

:13:32.:13:36.

5000 points. That is a big ask of Nafi Thiam. She is not a quick 800

:13:37.:13:44.

metre runner. She is not but she has been nothing short of brilliant

:13:45.:13:47.

today, right from the get go in the hurdles. Shot put, long jump, but

:13:48.:13:53.

this, not her best event, as you say. She knows the gold medal is

:13:54.:14:00.

hers. 2.14, a world record, way beyond her lifetime best. The battle

:14:01.:14:05.

really is for silver and bronze and the athlete that the front there. We

:14:06.:14:11.

have got far cast in bronze medal position at the moment, being

:14:12.:14:15.

tracked by Dadic who has also been brilliant, with personal bests in

:14:16.:14:22.

each event. Yes, far cat leading them out at the moment and we saw

:14:23.:14:28.

briefly Dadic, who they would try to keep up with. We can look at Thiam

:14:29.:14:33.

and the someone who looks like they are ambling around. She is a big,

:14:34.:14:37.

powerful athlete. Her strength comes in the other events. You saw how

:14:38.:14:41.

strong she is, how incredibly impressive she is in the high jump

:14:42.:14:45.

and she had a very good shot put as well. She was off to a flyer in the

:14:46.:14:50.

60m hurdles as well. The 800 is the one eventually could improve but

:14:51.:14:54.

then she has that power and strength, so perhaps it will never

:14:55.:14:58.

be harassment. She does have a 400 metre lifetime best of 68.9, so that

:14:59.:15:06.

is some sprint finish. But to be wildly optimistic. As they hear the

:15:07.:15:10.

bell, Thiam, one hand of the gold medal. It will be interesting to see

:15:11.:15:18.

how silver and bronze go. Dadic has got silver medal at the moment and

:15:19.:15:22.

I'm not sure that far cat can overhaul her. I think the silver

:15:23.:15:28.

medal will go to Dadic and the gold is certainly going to this woman,

:15:29.:15:32.

who is being left a long, long way behind the rest. The 800 metres is

:15:33.:15:39.

not her speciality and the 800 metres will be taken by Ivona Dadic,

:15:40.:15:43.

feeling had the silver medal. Gyorgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas has got the

:15:44.:15:50.

bronze. And leave the stage clear for this woman, not a great time,

:15:51.:15:56.

not 5000 points, but a gold medal for Nafi Thiam, adding to the

:15:57.:16:00.

Olympic title, European in daughter title. She is the outstanding multi

:16:01.:16:04.

event in the world right now and as we talked about earlier, Katarina

:16:05.:16:08.

Johnson-Thompson will be looking forward to trying to challenge her

:16:09.:16:10.

at the world Championships in London. But for now, Nafi Thiam is

:16:11.:16:14.

untouchable. A fantastic performance for me. We

:16:15.:16:23.

wondered what the Olympic champion mantle was going to do to her. Dadic

:16:24.:16:30.

has had a great day. Katarina Johnson Thomson watching on full

:16:31.:16:35.

stop she was champion here two years ago with 5000 points, more than

:16:36.:16:42.

Thiam has accumulated today. That is the biggest ever winning margin,

:16:43.:16:46.

more than Thiam has been able to produce here. Being interviewed flat

:16:47.:16:55.

on her back. Jessica Ennis-Hill has retired and sport needs good

:16:56.:17:01.

rivalries. You can see Thiam and Katarina Johnson Thomson with that

:17:02.:17:12.

rivalry. They are multi-events and we have a great tradition, of

:17:13.:17:17.

course, across the years. Shame we have no one representing us here but

:17:18.:17:23.

Thiam is the rising new staff. Last year in Rio, the unofficial score of

:17:24.:17:36.

4870. That goes into fourth on the world all-time list as far as I can

:17:37.:17:43.

see behind the world record-holder, Katarina Johnson Thomson from two

:17:44.:17:50.

years ago and the ration. Just ahead of Jessica Ennis-Hill. The time does

:17:51.:17:57.

not really matter. It does stress again, particularly in doors, that

:17:58.:18:06.

she is not a great 800-metre runner. Zsivocky-Farkas in third place and

:18:07.:18:14.

Thiam is still only 22. She is the European indoor champion in the

:18:15.:18:15.

Pentax lan. -- pentathlon. Thiam, as we were discussing

:18:16.:18:34.

beforehand but will she go for it or jog it round? A slight difference of

:18:35.:18:39.

opinion in the studio. You thought her performance was very

:18:40.:18:42.

interesting, a chink in her armour. They were your words. I think so but

:18:43.:18:48.

if you look at the events that have improved by this one has not. If she

:18:49.:18:54.

has gone away and work on her weaknesses, she can make herself

:18:55.:18:58.

pretty much invincible and she would have embraced the 800 metres more. I

:18:59.:19:02.

have not seen and she went straight to ground. It was a great score. You

:19:03.:19:10.

do not read as much into it? I really do not. What she did in Rio

:19:11.:19:15.

says she is able to take it up a notch and set a personal best. She

:19:16.:19:21.

is not happy in the 800 metres back has made great improvements. It is a

:19:22.:19:26.

chink because if she comes up against the likes of Kat, who will

:19:27.:19:32.

run health leather when she needs to, that becomes a problem. I do not

:19:33.:19:40.

read too much into that. She got her gold, together with her Olympic gold

:19:41.:19:46.

medal. A good job. It is that balance is always in the heptathlon.

:19:47.:19:51.

You do not see an improvement in the 800. There has been improvements

:19:52.:19:55.

across other events. You need the power but you also need to keep the

:19:56.:20:00.

endurance events as well and you need to be going up. For me, if you

:20:01.:20:08.

have improved in those areas, as she has got stronger cut she looks

:20:09.:20:12.

physically more robust. Has that added weight she cannot carry round

:20:13.:20:17.

the 800 metres? That is the thing is that if you look at someone might

:20:18.:20:23.

Katarina, who can easily run 2.11, regardless of what you do, you may

:20:24.:20:29.

have ten, 11 seconds, and that is a lot of points to be able to take out

:20:30.:20:33.

of somebody in the last event. It means if you can stay close or put

:20:34.:20:39.

her under pressure, you are in. Katarina will be looking at that and

:20:40.:20:42.

thinking that is interesting, especially when you're trying to win

:20:43.:20:46.

a World Championship. I don't know. I hear you but I really think... I

:20:47.:20:53.

know. This is where the bat. Is. It is OK. You are wrong. Kat knows what

:20:54.:21:02.

she has to do. When it comes down to it, she knows it is the throes she

:21:03.:21:10.

needs to work on. She has 200 points in one event alone as personal bests

:21:11.:21:16.

stand. So, I think it is always a balancing act. I still think that

:21:17.:21:21.

Kat needs to make sure she has no weaknesses. This girl, let's say, a

:21:22.:21:31.

weakness in the 800. Kat is a 13.4 hurdler. She is close to 6.19, 17

:21:32.:21:41.

long jumper. They are huge points. That is what I mean for that you can

:21:42.:21:45.

put her under pressure with those sprints. We will leave it there for

:21:46.:21:50.

now. A fascinating debate and we will get back onto the track for the

:21:51.:21:58.

start of the men's 1500 heats. In the first heat is Tom Lancashire, of

:21:59.:22:08.

protege of Steve Cram. Tom is in this first heat. There are three of

:22:09.:22:12.

them. All athletes think they have drawn the tough ones. Tom thinks out

:22:13.:22:18.

of the three this may be that tough first. And it is the first heat.

:22:19.:22:24.

That may be an advantage but with fastest loser spot available there

:22:25.:22:28.

is a decision to be made for all of these athletes. This is Selmouni who

:22:29.:22:39.

beat Lancashire on the line. He will be one to watch. Probably the most

:22:40.:22:43.

interesting one will be Filip Ingebrigtsen. He is

:22:44.:22:58.

the middle brother of the three full stop the German champion on the

:22:59.:23:04.

inside as well. One or two others to look out for. Plenty for Tom

:23:05.:23:10.

Lancashire to think about here. He won't be too happy that they have

:23:11.:23:19.

gone off at a pedestrian jog. This is the first heat. This pace is

:23:20.:23:26.

moving along quicker now and giving the guys chance to give themselves

:23:27.:23:31.

every chance and not set themselves up to be shot at and shot out of the

:23:32.:23:38.

qualifying positions. Thankfully, the pace has picked up. Tom has

:23:39.:23:48.

slaughtered in behind him. The French athlete is also a danger to

:23:49.:23:49.

Tom. He is probably thinking he has come

:23:50.:24:03.

to the European Championships and does not want to jog for seven and a

:24:04.:24:10.

half laps. Tom Mangan sheet in second place. It will turn into a

:24:11.:24:16.

bit of a kick. It'll be interesting to see what shape Filip Ingebrigtsen

:24:17.:24:20.

is in full cannot think he will be here if he did not think he had a

:24:21.:24:24.

chance of getting to the final and getting a medal. With it being as

:24:25.:24:29.

slow as it is, fastest loser spot with two more races to come might be

:24:30.:24:34.

difficult. They are not going at a quick pace at all. It is slow for

:24:35.:24:39.

guys of this calibre. Tom Lancashire as they come round now with four

:24:40.:24:46.

laps to go. He is in second place. Filip Ingebrigtsen just moving up.

:24:47.:24:50.

He will have done a fair amount of his training with his older brother,

:24:51.:24:56.

Henrik. I think he has come here in decent shape and he has certainly

:24:57.:25:00.

taken his time at the back of this field. He seems very confident as

:25:01.:25:05.

Tom Lancashire moves to the front. He quickly reacts to try to cover

:25:06.:25:09.

that. We'll Tom wind up from here on in? Not a bad thing to do. He is

:25:10.:25:22.

there to be shot at. Paniagua from Spain has moved up. A bit of

:25:23.:25:28.

pressure on the front. Plenty of them in with a good chance. Only two

:25:29.:25:34.

to qualify. Tom Lancashire, as they come and this time two laps to go.

:25:35.:25:38.

That is 400 metres he will want to keep the pressure on. They are quite

:25:39.:25:45.

well strung out. Lancashire leading from Selmouni. The German also may

:25:46.:25:49.

be quickly to latch itself onto the back of the group. They are trying

:25:50.:25:54.

to break away. Tom is definitely trying to pull them away he needs to

:25:55.:25:58.

see some more daylight opening up behind him to give him some

:25:59.:26:03.

confidence. He is doing a good job. They are well stretched out behind.

:26:04.:26:08.

Tom Lancashire with 200 metres to go. Selmouni and then a bit of a

:26:09.:26:13.

gap. Filip Ingebrigtsen looks like he is struggling a little bit.

:26:14.:26:18.

Lancashire needs to stay strong. He has done the right thing by

:26:19.:26:23.

attacking from the front. Tom Lancashire, with 100 metres to go,

:26:24.:26:28.

in a qualifying position will stop he took this by the scruff of the

:26:29.:26:36.

neck. A really impressive run. Selmouni will chase him in. Filip

:26:37.:26:43.

Ingebrigtsen nowhere. That is an interesting one. He came in here not

:26:44.:26:48.

having raced. Well done, Tom. A sigh of relief from the coach and into

:26:49.:26:55.

the final. Britain's only representative in the 1500 but he

:26:56.:26:58.

did that perfectly well. Well executed by Tom. He is in good

:26:59.:27:04.

shape. We will now break off for the pole vault. Immediately on the

:27:05.:27:09.

infield, as they cross the finish line, Pawel Wojciechowski of Poland.

:27:10.:27:22.

His team-mate is in the silver medal position, Holizdeppe. Last attempt.

:27:23.:27:31.

5.90. No. Too much for him. It is enough for bronze. So, it is gold

:27:32.:27:43.

for Lisek. Gold and bronze for Poland and silver for the Greek

:27:44.:27:48.

athlete. All three medallists, 5.85 was the best. But it Pawel

:27:49.:27:59.

Wojciechowski had a chance, didn't he, to beat his team-mate, but the

:28:00.:28:07.

medals have been decided. Poland have two of them. Gold to Lisek.

:28:08.:28:17.

There are congratulations. Confirmation of the final failure at

:28:18.:28:24.

5.94 Pawel Wojciechowski. Smiling away and pleased with his bronze.

:28:25.:28:29.

Maybe that is his downfall. Congratulations all round. Gold and

:28:30.:28:31.

bronze for Poland. There is your gold-medallist. He was

:28:32.:28:44.

the man to beat, the favourite. He has won with 5.80 five. Gold and

:28:45.:28:53.

bronze therefore Poland. Tom Lancashire going through very

:28:54.:28:59.

impressively indeed in the end and Selmouni going through with him. I'm

:29:00.:29:07.

sure a very happy Tom is with Phil. That was a most impressive

:29:08.:29:11.

qualification. You must be thrilled. I am really happy. On paper it

:29:12.:29:16.

looked like a tough heat. Always being in the first heat is never an

:29:17.:29:19.

advantage really. So, to come through it with comfort and not

:29:20.:29:26.

extend myself too much, I'm really happy with it and it is just a

:29:27.:29:30.

relief more than anything to get the heats out of the way. I have really

:29:31.:29:32.

been looking forward to the Championships. I can look forward to

:29:33.:29:39.

tomorrow now. Was your idea always to take the race by the scruff of

:29:40.:29:44.

the neck, as Steve put it? I think so. I think I had to do that as one

:29:45.:29:49.

of the fastest guys on paper. I have a lot of confidence coming into

:29:50.:29:53.

this. Also, obviously, it depends on what kind of race it is. The guy

:29:54.:29:57.

that took it out in the middle got things moving a little bit which

:29:58.:30:02.

helped me. I was able to work off him and Steve always talks about

:30:03.:30:07.

using my instincts. I am not a spring chicken anymore. One thing

:30:08.:30:12.

I've gained is a lot of experience. Yes, I just sniffed when it felt

:30:13.:30:17.

right to go and eased away. Fortunately I was able to ease away

:30:18.:30:20.

quite comfortably. I was really happy with that. Congratulations.

:30:21.:30:23.

Thank you. registered I am just sitting down

:30:24.:30:37.

though. Tom is through and Sweden have a good prospect here. Cali

:30:38.:30:45.

Birdland. Yes, only butcher has run quicker this year. Not a bad

:30:46.:30:50.

line-up, either. There is Birdland. Finished fourth in Birmingham. We

:30:51.:31:02.

have talked about how butcher was quickest over 1500m and 3000, but he

:31:03.:31:05.

chose not to run here. Look out for a car of Spain. He

:31:06.:31:18.

hasn't lost a race this season. I view of the runners thought there

:31:19.:31:21.

was a false start there. There was a bang from somewhere. One of them has

:31:22.:31:27.

stopped. Two of them has stopped. Travers is one of them. Paula, there

:31:28.:31:36.

is huge confusion there and two of them have effectively stopped and

:31:37.:31:41.

almost taken themselves out of this. Travers and a colour have got a lot

:31:42.:31:46.

to do just to get back into this. There is a lot of confusion around

:31:47.:31:50.

the starting area. They don't seem to realise what has happened. They

:31:51.:31:55.

should have called them back. These two guys now are at a big

:31:56.:32:00.

disadvantage. Alcala is still in no man's land will not be able to get

:32:01.:32:05.

back into this now and that is his race over. That is a real shame.

:32:06.:32:08.

Alcala has not lost a race this season. Six races in Spain, six

:32:09.:32:13.

wins. And the Irish indoor champion made the final at the last European

:32:14.:32:18.

indoors and he is still adrift. That was all very unfortunate and the

:32:19.:32:22.

starters here, there have been a few things going on today but somebody

:32:23.:32:25.

should have been aware of the noise that happened there, very like a

:32:26.:32:36.

gunshot, and they should have stepped in to call them back. They

:32:37.:32:38.

were all looking round. They were all looking around for a while. For

:32:39.:32:41.

a wreath -- for a while, Berglund even slowed the pace down. I don't

:32:42.:32:46.

know if he realised what was going on behind him. You can see that

:32:47.:32:49.

Alcala is still trying to catch up with that group in front. Travers

:32:50.:32:53.

has realised he's not going to be able to get in touch and has grown

:32:54.:32:58.

in the towel. It's a mental tarp -- test as much as anything else. They

:32:59.:33:03.

have to give it absolutely everything that they were 20 metres

:33:04.:33:07.

adrift of the rest. To do go through automatically, three fastest losers,

:33:08.:33:13.

and it is Cali Sasinek. He was as surprised as the rest at the start

:33:14.:33:19.

but he kept going. And there is the man with the second quickest pace in

:33:20.:33:23.

Europe this year. This group of five has separated itself at the moment.

:33:24.:33:28.

Also in their looking powerful, Rollin, the Portuguese athlete. Yes,

:33:29.:33:43.

he is looking very comfortable. Kazi, once the confusion had settled

:33:44.:33:50.

down, set out to work this group and he has set out what he has achieved

:33:51.:33:57.

to do -- he has achieved what he set out today. Trying to get the pace

:33:58.:34:00.

moving now and I think it is quicker than in the previous heat. Just a

:34:01.:34:07.

group of now. Perhaps even three. Working very hard to maintain

:34:08.:34:11.

contact but it is Sasinek and Berglund able to look around and

:34:12.:34:19.

still hanging in, Emanuel Rolim. Two automatic qualifiers and certainly

:34:20.:34:26.

Sasinek. Two of them fading as they hit the bell. These two are clearly

:34:27.:34:32.

away now. Berglund will be very aware of the fact that group has --

:34:33.:34:40.

that gap has opened up. You either up a bit but not too much because he

:34:41.:34:43.

doesn't want to be rundown unawares in that final straight. So, the

:34:44.:34:50.

victory will go to Sasinek. Berglund has let him have it. He will do the

:34:51.:34:54.

bare minimum now. Just keep himself ahead of Rollin who is finishing

:34:55.:35:00.

strongly. Those are the two automatic qualifiers and Emanuel

:35:01.:35:09.

Rolim and staff are hoping for a fastest runner-up place. So the end

:35:10.:35:15.

of the race was normal but the start was anything but. The race was

:35:16.:35:21.

ruined for Travers and Alcala. A smile from Travers but a complaint

:35:22.:35:29.

will be lodged, I am sure. It was odd. This is the finish of the race,

:35:30.:35:34.

which is the less interesting part. Sasinek taking a victory ahead of

:35:35.:35:37.

Berglund but we will have another look at the start in a moment. Have

:35:38.:35:41.

you been involved in situations similar to that, Paula? Have you

:35:42.:35:46.

been called back when there was a noise at the start and the starter

:35:47.:35:51.

should have stepped in? Listen to this. There we go. Obviously the

:35:52.:36:03.

sound of the gun is very different from the electronic gun, which is

:36:04.:36:08.

the first clue, but you hear a gun in a race and you are automatically

:36:09.:36:13.

looking around. There was a very clear crack of what sounded like a

:36:14.:36:18.

gunshot. A definite crack and a definite gunshot. Two of them

:36:19.:36:21.

decided to job and I guess that's one lesson learned their Alcala. You

:36:22.:36:26.

can't do that until somebody runs in front of you and tells you to stop.

:36:27.:36:30.

In answer to your question, it happened to me once in that other

:36:31.:36:34.

women's league many moons ago. The timekeepers forgot to start their

:36:35.:36:40.

watch, fair of the 400 metres, they asked me to go back. Paula is

:36:41.:36:44.

absolutely right. That gun went off by accident, obviously, but you do

:36:45.:36:48.

not stop until you are stopped. That will be his problem. He will

:36:49.:36:53.

complain, I am sure, but they will say everybody else kept running, you

:36:54.:36:58.

should have done as well. Yes, so John Travers and Alcala, who is not

:36:59.:37:03.

on that page, will pay the price. Looking at the times for Rolim and

:37:04.:37:10.

Kazi. At the moment, they are going through to the final as to what the

:37:11.:37:12.

fastest losers. Well, that was a pretty good, well,

:37:13.:37:31.

easy, I guess, poor Sasinek and Berglund to be able to jogging,

:37:32.:37:35.

particularly for Berglund, that is everybody's dream in the heat and

:37:36.:37:40.

now the guys in this last one have a decision to make. They have got

:37:41.:37:44.

every opportunity of going through as fastest losers because anything

:37:45.:37:51.

in the low three point 40 or 348, but I will break off, because Phil

:37:52.:37:57.

has Travers with him. Thank you, Steve, and thank you for coming to

:37:58.:38:02.

talk to us. Explain what happened. About 40 metres into the race, a

:38:03.:38:07.

second gun went and we thought they were calling us back. Myself and the

:38:08.:38:12.

Spanish lad pulled up and we kept looking over, I do know what the

:38:13.:38:23.

crack was, but I tried to keep the race up. My legs were gone at 600

:38:24.:38:26.

metres though and there was no coming back. I will find out if

:38:27.:38:30.

there is anything we can do, but to be honest, I underperformed anyway,

:38:31.:38:33.

so I doubt a performance -- an appeal would go through. Very

:38:34.:38:38.

strange. I've never had that before. I just wonder whether an appeal

:38:39.:38:41.

would go through as well because there were only two of you that

:38:42.:38:45.

stopped and the rest carried on. Yes, if Moore had had stopped, that

:38:46.:38:50.

would have been the case. I don't understand where second gun --

:38:51.:38:54.

second gun would have gone if they weren't stopping us. We will put a

:38:55.:38:59.

-- an appeal in because it would be crazy not to but I am not sure about

:39:00.:39:05.

whether it will come to anything. Stranger things have happened. Well,

:39:06.:39:10.

I am a lot clearer now, not. I think both teams will put an appealing. I

:39:11.:39:15.

think he hit the nail on the head down when he said we shouldn't have

:39:16.:39:19.

stopped. I think that is what the judge will say. And of course, to

:39:20.:39:23.

put an appeal in, your team have to spend a couple of hundred dollars.

:39:24.:39:28.

Something like that. That will rumble on a little bit, so Spain and

:39:29.:39:33.

Ireland may well be lodging a complaint. We shall see. So, now I

:39:34.:39:44.

hear. We all know this guy well. -- Nava here. He has taken off here, a

:39:45.:39:52.

Serbian, and he knows that if he can run 3.4 3.48, he can get three as a

:39:53.:39:58.

fastest loser. He is trying to get them to run with him. Urging them

:39:59.:40:03.

on. He is saying, I will guarantee you the support of the stadium

:40:04.:40:07.

tonight to get us through if you help me here. Well, five of them

:40:08.:40:12.

could go through if they run faster than three minutes, 47 seconds. They

:40:13.:40:19.

are more than capable of that. With the exception of Harvey Dixon, they

:40:20.:40:26.

have all run faster than that this year. So, Harvey Dixon is that the

:40:27.:40:30.

back and the pace is OK. I love this. The Italian verb, I have done

:40:31.:40:35.

my lot and the big tall Swede is advocating a little bit but it is

:40:36.:40:43.

his term, surely? -- his term, surely? It is his turn but he

:40:44.:40:48.

unwillingly goes to the brand but doesn't maintain the pace that has

:40:49.:40:50.

been sacked and that's allowed the whole field to bunch back up again

:40:51.:40:55.

and at the back there is Martin Lewandowski. He moved up to the

:40:56.:41:01.

1500m from the 800 metres and he would certainly have himself down as

:41:02.:41:06.

one of the fastest finishes here. He is quite happy for it to move along

:41:07.:41:11.

slowly and rely on that pace. He needs to take it a little bit closer

:41:12.:41:15.

though because he has now created a small gap. I think they are going

:41:16.:41:20.

well here through 800 metres and much quicker than the first two

:41:21.:41:24.

heats. It has been set up nicely here because five of them could

:41:25.:41:29.

definitely qualify here. 346.96, they are the fastest losers but that

:41:30.:41:36.

the moment. Lewandowski get the little bit closer. Definitely one of

:41:37.:41:39.

the medal favourites, the Polish athlete, along with Tom Lancashire

:41:40.:41:46.

and Berglund. He will want to make sure that he makes no mistakes from

:41:47.:41:49.

this point. The Swedish athletes still has a five metre lead. Yes, he

:41:50.:41:56.

is giving himself every chance that if his legs tire over the final

:41:57.:42:00.

couple of laps, anyway to be in too much danger, but he is in danger

:42:01.:42:03.

because he is getting close down quite quickly by Lewandowski who is

:42:04.:42:08.

pulling the others close to him. Lewandowski N second place, Benitz

:42:09.:42:14.

of Germany on his shoulder, a little look behind from the Swede. He knows

:42:15.:42:18.

this is the important part of the race, but they have got three 1200

:42:19.:42:22.

in a quick three minutes so they just need to maintain here and the

:42:23.:42:28.

Spaniard is looking at little tired. Nava could be under threat here

:42:29.:42:32.

because with a lap to go, he has got a chance of the top five. I think

:42:33.:42:36.

I've could go through. He needs to work hard here though. You can see a

:42:37.:42:40.

little bit of panic that. Lewandowski is starting to launches

:42:41.:42:44.

fight. He needs to look at the time if he can. Benitz slides through on

:42:45.:42:52.

the inside out. The German slip through on the inside and these two

:42:53.:42:56.

are pulling away. Benitz, Lewandowski, registered and Bouih of

:42:57.:43:02.

Italy and sadly it will be Nava who will miss out, because in the first

:43:03.:43:11.

to heats, if you were at the top two, not that it's your own fault,

:43:12.:43:16.

but you have the chance to make it a quick race. These guys got together

:43:17.:43:19.

a little bit, worked together, not that Benitz did much of the work,

:43:20.:43:24.

neither did Lewandowski, they led the others do the work, but

:43:25.:43:29.

Rogestedt been rewarded, Bouih is being rewarded, because they took

:43:30.:43:37.

some of the early pace. So it has been rewarded and he did nothing.

:43:38.:43:43.

The pace was definitely affected in the second heat because of that

:43:44.:43:47.

second gun, but Rogestedt worked really hard in the middle of the

:43:48.:43:50.

race, hanging on in third place and he knows he has got to keep running

:43:51.:43:54.

hard through the line and he has done enough to go through as a

:43:55.:43:57.

fastest loser and do pretty much guaranteed that the three fastest

:43:58.:43:59.

losers come from that final heat. Well, that's it for the men's 1500m.

:44:00.:44:12.

Their final, like the women's, is tomorrow night as well. Tom

:44:13.:44:17.

Lancashire three. And we were just tidy up that last one there. Benitz,

:44:18.:44:21.

Lewandowski, and you can see the small queue signs meaning that the

:44:22.:44:26.

three fastest runner ups will be Rogestedt, Bouih and Sales from

:44:27.:44:28.

Spain. A little bit earlier, it was the

:44:29.:44:41.

women's high jump qualification, with Britain pars-mac Morgan Lake

:44:42.:44:46.

covering -- Britain pars-mac Morgan Lake covering 1.90 and we caught up

:44:47.:44:53.

with her afterwards. Morgan, it seems you grow with confidence with

:44:54.:44:57.

every competition you take part in. How much did The Olympic Club know

:44:58.:44:59.

and what you experienced last year do for this event? It really helped

:45:00.:45:06.

knowing that I had an Olympic final last year, knowing that I could do

:45:07.:45:10.

it up against almost the exact same people. I knew I could get there. I

:45:11.:45:14.

had to stay confident and jump high. How did you feel in body and mind

:45:15.:45:19.

coming in this morning? I felt quite healthy, quite happy. We trained on

:45:20.:45:24.

the track yesterday, so I got a good feel of it yesterday, so I felt

:45:25.:45:28.

quite confident. It's one thing to feel that way, another way to

:45:29.:45:31.

translate it into competition but it seems you do that with aplomb these

:45:32.:45:37.

days? I'm trying to. It gets better each competition. I'm used to

:45:38.:45:40.

competing against these girls now on the circuit, so that helps. Had he

:45:41.:45:45.

been given an added boost in the way from the new coaching regime? Has it

:45:46.:45:54.

giving you a new impetus. Yes, definitely a fresh outlook and great

:45:55.:45:59.

people to train with, so definitely helping. Another final to look

:46:00.:46:00.

forward to. Thank you. As much as I think a lot of fans

:46:01.:46:11.

would like to see how competing across five events, do you think

:46:12.:46:14.

that the more you get the experience of these big events, these

:46:15.:46:21.

multisport events, if you like, and all the athletes here together under

:46:22.:46:26.

one roof, being part of the great Britain team, it is actually a good

:46:27.:46:35.

experience? Morgan has been at the Olympics and made World

:46:36.:46:39.

Championships. She is experienced enough to handle herself on

:46:40.:46:42.

occasions like this. I think she is happy. She has been on the circuit a

:46:43.:46:47.

bit and done some high jumping. Sheen and she is able to jump as

:46:48.:46:53.

well as some of the girls. 1.96 is well within her reach. She needs to

:46:54.:47:03.

push herself a little bit. Behind me you can here we are getting ready

:47:04.:47:09.

for a medal ceremony. It is the women's shot put. Hungary are the

:47:10.:47:15.

winners. We will tell you all about this athlete. Martin takes her

:47:16.:47:26.

celebrations. She received this two years ago. One by some margin in the

:47:27.:47:34.

and. 19.28 metres. The best in the world this year and nearly eased

:47:35.:47:39.

ahead of the best of the rest of the field. The Belarussian in bird. Bog

:47:40.:47:50.

area in silver medal position. Anita Martin takes her national anthem.

:47:51.:48:57.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE . A first look at the shape of the

:48:58.:49:06.

medals. Gold for Hungary. Any to tempt one with 19.28 to take gold in

:49:07.:49:21.

the shot put. Gold for Hungary and gold for Belgium as well. Nafi Thiam

:49:22.:49:31.

one. Another gold medal and a wonderful performance. You set the

:49:32.:49:34.

tone for the day with a personal best in the first event. I must've

:49:35.:49:41.

been a great really good. To go so good, from the first event, the

:49:42.:49:48.

hurdles, I felt pretty good. That is 20 better than my personal best. I

:49:49.:49:56.

am disappointed by the 800 but I wasn't prepared for in doors, so I

:49:57.:50:00.

know I shouldn't be but I am really happy. Really? You did not think you

:50:01.:50:04.

should be hip and you are concentrating on the outdoor season,

:50:05.:50:09.

were you? It is always the goal for me, the outdoor season. During the

:50:10.:50:13.

winter you have to train outside. I do not have any indoor facilities.

:50:14.:50:18.

In Belgium it has been really cold and snowing. I could not do

:50:19.:50:24.

anything. I know I will not be as good as I should be for

:50:25.:50:28.

international championships. But, yes, this year when pretty good. I

:50:29.:50:34.

am really happy. That just shows you how good you are put you are the

:50:35.:50:40.

person to be nowadays. We saw it in the Olympic Games. Brilliant

:50:41.:50:42.

performance after brilliant performance. I wonder what it is

:50:43.:50:47.

like being Olympic champion and going out there believing more in

:50:48.:50:51.

yourself and knowing you are the one to beat. Before going here, there

:50:52.:51:00.

was a hesitation to come here. I was afraid not being as good as people

:51:01.:51:05.

expect from me here. That is why I hesitated. But I love it so much. I

:51:06.:51:14.

did not want to miss it. I am pretty happy I made the decision to come

:51:15.:51:22.

here. This summer hopefully will be good too but you never know. We look

:51:23.:51:26.

forward to you coming here in the summer. We had Jessica Ennis-Hill

:51:27.:51:34.

who has retired but also Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who you know well.

:51:35.:51:38.

I looking forward to the competition? Of course. I think it

:51:39.:51:45.

will be really, really good. I cannot wait, to be honest. I hope I

:51:46.:51:52.

will be in good shape. To be able to compete with the best. As I said,

:51:53.:51:57.

we'll see. Congratulations on a wonderful performance. Another gold

:51:58.:52:02.

medal. Well done. Thank you. The great and the good are here. Lord

:52:03.:52:09.

Sebastien Corchia with surrogate broker. -- Bubka. He was telling me

:52:10.:52:24.

about his plans. He thought Nitro was a fantastic event for the he

:52:25.:52:27.

talked about that over the weekend was doing was a pretty good runner

:52:28.:52:31.

in his day and so was Colin Jackson. We have the finals of the hurdles

:52:32.:52:36.

coming up later on, in the next half an hour. It thought it would be good

:52:37.:52:43.

to remind you of all of this. -- we thought.

:52:44.:52:48.

Britain's Lynn Jackson in lane five in the 60 metres hurdles final. So

:52:49.:52:57.

talented. -- Colin Jackson. They are a way this time put up Jackson got

:52:58.:53:03.

away well. Jackson ready maybe now. Jackson is holding him put a Jackson

:53:04.:53:07.

WinZip. He said, my goodness me, I made hard work of that! Colin

:53:08.:53:14.

Jackson, supremely confident and dominant in each of the round so

:53:15.:53:21.

far. Jackson storming down the track. Jackson will win. Colin

:53:22.:53:27.

Jackson is the European indoor hurdles champion for the second

:53:28.:53:35.

time. He really looks cool and calm. Away this time. Colin Jackson. He is

:53:36.:53:47.

once again big European champion. He has won titles in the 80s, the 90s,

:53:48.:53:52.

and now the millennium. He really is brilliant. It felt like boy to man,

:53:53.:54:02.

Colin Jackson. You are right on time every time, won't that you loved

:54:03.:54:07.

indoors, didn't you? I really did. There was a great experience for the

:54:08.:54:12.

I love practising indoors over the 60s that as well as well as the

:54:13.:54:15.

60-metre hurdles themselves. A great time but always that little

:54:16.:54:24.

challenge. The hurdles came out really quickly. I see those wet days

:54:25.:54:28.

in Wales indoors helped their attractions. Always good to take a

:54:29.:54:33.

trip down memory lane. The women's hurdles final is coming up soon and

:54:34.:54:38.

the men's after that with Andy Pozzi of Great Britain going in that one.

:54:39.:54:45.

Hoping for a medal, and gold, day we say. He is head and shoulders above

:54:46.:54:51.

the rest so far the sheer. Let's get out there. The light show is taking

:54:52.:54:58.

place. The noise is ramping up. Now the women's race. They bring the

:54:59.:55:04.

athletes out and they have a little bit of a warm up and then they are

:55:05.:55:15.

introduced. There is the German, Dutkiewicz, who is one of the

:55:16.:55:22.

favourites. Sauntering out is the Ukrainian, Plotitsyna. A new

:55:23.:55:28.

personal best of 7.90 to. She got out very quickly in the semifinal.

:55:29.:55:33.

She has a lane right in the middle. The defending indoor European

:55:34.:55:39.

champion, Talay, won her heat, her semifinal. More to come, judging by

:55:40.:55:45.

the way she won those races. Talay, perhaps the favourite. The European

:55:46.:55:54.

champion, Roleder, has a chance as well. She finished behind Danielle

:55:55.:56:09.

Williams. The heptathlete, Visser is here as well. A very fine hurdler,

:56:10.:56:15.

through to the final here. And there are three Germans in the final. The

:56:16.:56:21.

third one being Ricarda Lobe. The third German here not quite of the

:56:22.:56:28.

calibre of the others but still a good prospect. Two of the three

:56:29.:56:32.

European finalists from Rio are not here. That is a shame because this

:56:33.:56:36.

is one of the highest standard events of these championships. A

:56:37.:56:40.

great final in prospect Andy would have been fascinating to see how

:56:41.:56:50.

they would have fared against the likes of Talay and Dutkiewicz. The

:56:51.:56:57.

Swede is still the world indoor record holder. This is the final

:56:58.:57:01.

race of the grand career full she is delighted to make it through to the

:57:02.:57:04.

final, to have her farewell in front of a decent crowd at a major

:57:05.:57:12.

championship. Isabel Pedersen of Norway, on the inside, a former

:57:13.:57:18.

junior championship, -- champion, runs very competitively.

:57:19.:57:32.

The penultimate race of this first day of the European indoor

:57:33.:57:38.

Championships in Belgrade. The final of the women's 60 hurdles. They are

:57:39.:57:46.

called back. Let it not be a false start in her final race, pleased

:57:47.:57:57.

that she was out so quickly, Kallur, and to fear for her. It may well

:57:58.:58:02.

have been a false start for Kallur, in her last ever race. We're all

:58:03.:58:11.

looking up to the big screen to see reaction times. They have not been

:58:12.:58:17.

so good at giving them to us later on in the day. Colin watching that

:58:18.:58:22.

one as well. It would be so sad if were Kallur. It would not be the

:58:23.:58:30.

right way to end such an illustrious career. Let's keep our fingers

:58:31.:58:36.

crossed. As always, you never know who it can possibly be. Even though

:58:37.:58:42.

she exploded out of the blocks, it could have been someone else to set

:58:43.:58:50.

off the signal will stop it is not Kallur. We will look at the replay.

:58:51.:58:58.

Pedersen is giving her explanation to the starter. This seldom works.

:58:59.:59:06.

You can see already. Pedersen in lane one alongside Kallur.

:59:07.:59:15.

Again, she was pretty much alongside Kallur. We are not being given the

:59:16.:59:23.

reaction times. They must be quicker than a tenth of a second. Isabel

:59:24.:59:32.

Pedersen is disqualified instead. It is on the pressure leaving the pad.

:59:33.:59:37.

It is done on the timings and efficiently, electronic key. Little

:59:38.:59:42.

arguing can be done. But a real shame for Isabel Pedersen. She had a

:59:43.:59:50.

real chance. They are all running so closely together in times but only

:59:51.:59:55.

seven main now. Pedersen is gone and Kallur is there.

:59:56.:00:02.

Oscar well, she's been reinstated. The cheer from the crowd. Odd things

:00:03.:00:20.

are happening today in Belgrade. Issue being reinstated? She is. Now,

:00:21.:00:27.

this is great news for her but how do you gather yourself and settle

:00:28.:00:32.

yourself now? This is a big problem for the athletes because of course

:00:33.:00:37.

they expected everything to become. This is only just adds a bit more

:00:38.:00:42.

frustration when it comes to a final, because now you are worrying,

:00:43.:00:46.

our officials getting it right? If I react a little bit quickly, is it

:00:47.:00:50.

true? All these things will be going through your mind and you really

:00:51.:00:53.

just want to focus on the race and the competition. The starters have

:00:54.:00:58.

not been medal winners today. Isabel Pedersen have to gather herself and

:00:59.:01:02.

so, so difficult to go from deep despair to regather herself. Do a

:01:03.:01:11.

bit of that. She is back alongside Kallur and all the others. We are

:01:12.:01:20.

ready once again for a highly charged final of the women's 60m

:01:21.:01:28.

hurdles. And she waited and waited, Pedersen, and they are called back

:01:29.:01:32.

again. It certainly wasn't Pedersen this time. She made sure of it but

:01:33.:01:38.

they are called back and be crowd in Belgrade give way to their feelings.

:01:39.:01:43.

You know, Andrew, right now the starter has to be really strong and

:01:44.:01:48.

not feel intimidated by the crowd. They are whistling, booing, but he

:01:49.:01:53.

must take control of his discipline as well. It is a tough call. Does he

:01:54.:01:58.

override what the machine is telling him? Visually, I am struggling to

:01:59.:02:01.

see what was wrong with that stopped. I am wondering why they

:02:02.:02:06.

stopped giving us their reaction times. You and I were just noticing,

:02:07.:02:11.

they stopped putting the reaction times are now computer about halfway

:02:12.:02:17.

through the afternoon. Possibly lane five, Talay, got away well, but

:02:18.:02:21.

she's a good starter. There's nothing there which would suggest a

:02:22.:02:24.

false start, is there? I think they have got a problem. They have.

:02:25.:02:30.

Again, I say, we are not getting Biela Tronic real -- the electronic

:02:31.:02:44.

relation --... The green card is a technical fault. Hugely unsettling.

:02:45.:02:49.

She who wins here may be the one who can steady her nerves and keep her

:02:50.:02:55.

composure more than anyone else. And for Susanna Kallur, this is her

:02:56.:02:58.

final race. She is getting the most out of it. So, ready again. This is

:02:59.:03:05.

actually quite good for Isabel Pedersen. It's giving her more time.

:03:06.:03:10.

Everybody is unsettled now. Isabel Pedersen, Susanna Kallur, dude can

:03:11.:03:22.

pitch, Racine of the UK in, this and Lobe. And the starter seems

:03:23.:03:29.

unsettled, too, so we are going to stand up. I mean, they are trying

:03:30.:03:37.

their best is all you can say of the starters, but it's not really been

:03:38.:03:40.

at times good enough today. You know, this is going to be really

:03:41.:03:44.

frustrating for the athletes now, because I feel the starter will be a

:03:45.:03:48.

very quick gun, so the athletes have got to be ready because he wants to

:03:49.:03:52.

get this rate is done and dusted, so it will be a quick set position and

:03:53.:04:01.

a fire, faster probably than we have seen for most of the day. He is

:04:02.:04:05.

struggling, isn't he? I know they are hoping to hold the world indoor

:04:06.:04:09.

Championships here in Belgrade. If few adjustments might have to be

:04:10.:04:14.

made to get those games. -- eight view adjustments. Ready once again.

:04:15.:04:19.

As Colin said that, he might just get them out more sharply between

:04:20.:04:29.

the hold and the bank of the gun. The finalists of the women's 60m

:04:30.:04:35.

hurdles. This time, they are away, and it ties up quickly. Trying to

:04:36.:04:40.

get back towards that is Talay. But she fades, and Roger takes it. It

:04:41.:04:50.

was therefore Talay but rallied is -- Roleder is celebrating. She came

:04:51.:04:56.

through in the final ten metres to take it at the calm European indoor

:04:57.:05:00.

to the. Talay will say, how did I let that slip away? Roleder is a

:05:01.:05:09.

big-time athlete. As we saw earlier on in the day, in her qualifier, she

:05:10.:05:14.

qualified very competently. Now she becomes the champion. Always does

:05:15.:05:18.

well when the pressure is on. She kept a cool head. No panicking.

:05:19.:05:23.

There was pressure left, pressure right, but she kept her head,

:05:24.:05:26.

knowing she is good technically, knows her strong part of the race is

:05:27.:05:33.

the backend. Talay, explosive out of the blocks, but Wallader just edged

:05:34.:05:36.

her. She comes up that final barrier and says, you know what, go for it,

:05:37.:05:43.

lean, do it, and she has. A great performance. Strong and bold.

:05:44.:05:47.

Looking at the finish there as we look once more at the start, Vukovic

:05:48.:05:54.

just came through to take the bronze medal, so Germany has gold and

:05:55.:05:57.

bronze, but at this point, Talay would have thought she had it. She

:05:58.:06:02.

would have thought she had this race nailed. At the final barrier, Talay

:06:03.:06:08.

was probably still ahead, but Wallader is stronger and taller --

:06:09.:06:15.

Roleder is stronger and taller and dipped at that crucial moment,

:06:16.:06:21.

taking the victory in a very swift time also, 7.8 eight. There is the

:06:22.:06:31.

gold-medal winner taking backstage for a moment there, but she is the

:06:32.:06:38.

woman centre stage, European Indoor Championships as well as outdoor

:06:39.:06:44.

champion. And Talay can now celebrate her bronze -- has over

:06:45.:06:48.

medal, but she was quicker in her qualifier than in the final. Roleder

:06:49.:06:54.

brought it out when it mattered. We talk about the strength that the

:06:55.:06:59.

Germans have their in Dutkiewicz and Roleder.

:07:00.:07:10.

The men's 60m hurdles final, which we are hoping will go off more

:07:11.:07:16.

smoothly than the women's race. Hopefully they have got rid of the

:07:17.:07:22.

gremlins in the works. Andy Pozzi, the fastest man in the world this

:07:23.:07:26.

year, the favourite for gold this year and Phil Specter him before he

:07:27.:07:34.

came out. -- Phil spoke to him before he came out. Andrew Pozzi is

:07:35.:07:40.

flying once again. He is running so consistently well, so consistently

:07:41.:07:44.

quickly, time and time again and he destroyed the field, Andrew Pozzi.

:07:45.:07:50.

To go from strength to strength, I started off the season with my

:07:51.:07:53.

quickest ever season opener and that wasn't too far from my PB. I was

:07:54.:07:57.

expecting it to build slowly but then I took a tenth of my personal

:07:58.:08:02.

bends in the next race, so it went to another level. It's as good as I

:08:03.:08:07.

could hope for. Describe what it's like when you've not been able to

:08:08.:08:10.

put in the hurdling work like last year, that he would have liked, and

:08:11.:08:14.

then this year, and contrast, you have. It's just consistency. The

:08:15.:08:19.

fact I've been healthy for a long period of time, I'm coming from a

:08:20.:08:26.

much better base. He is going backwards. The race was therefore

:08:27.:08:29.

Andrew Pozzi and he was all over the place. He had the speed but he

:08:30.:08:32.

didn't write the barriers well enough. Whilst I was very

:08:33.:08:36.

disappointed with the way that Rio went and the Olympics went, I came

:08:37.:08:40.

away from that in the weeks and months later with a bit more context

:08:41.:08:43.

and felt that actually, if that's where we are now, with limited

:08:44.:08:47.

preparation, then that bodes well for the future. The 60m hurdles is a

:08:48.:08:56.

really strong event in Europe so I am going into it knowing that really

:08:57.:08:59.

you need to be the best in the world if you want to be the best in Europe

:09:00.:09:04.

at the moment. There are a couple of non-Europeans that are running well

:09:05.:09:07.

at the moment but the Europeans are great at hurdles. Two of the medals

:09:08.:09:09.

from three at the Olympics were Europeans. That's great because it

:09:10.:09:12.

means I'm struggling to be the best I can be because the competition

:09:13.:09:16.

demands it. I have been a senior at the higher level for about five

:09:17.:09:19.

years and have very few medals to show for it, so hopefully now is the

:09:20.:09:24.

time when that will start to change and you'll start seeing me on the

:09:25.:09:29.

podium a lot more. You are still only 24, we should remind ourselves.

:09:30.:09:34.

Yes, I am quite young. I think I flew one to scene about 19 and, like

:09:35.:09:39.

I say, with all the interruptions, it feels like I am about 40 times

:09:40.:09:45.

but I have a long time ahead of me. So that's good. We will talk more

:09:46.:09:50.

about Andy Pozzi's final in just a moment but there is Nafi Thiam, who

:09:51.:09:55.

of course won the pentathlon a little bit earlier this evening. The

:09:56.:09:59.

Olympic champion is now the European Indoor Championships stop she got to

:10:00.:10:02.

hear the Belgian anthem one more time.

:10:03.:10:13.

Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of Belgium.

:10:14.:11:09.

Well, it's a packed agenda here. In between those two finals, we have a

:11:10.:11:30.

medal ceremony. Who knows how the starters gun will work for the men's

:11:31.:11:34.

final? Let's hope it is smoother because Great Britain have great

:11:35.:11:41.

hopes for Andy Pozzi. He qualified very comfortably. He is, this year,

:11:42.:11:45.

the fastest man in the world and this would be a fantastic

:11:46.:11:48.

opportunity for him to put to bed so many near starts that he has had in

:11:49.:11:54.

championships where unfortunate things have happened. Cramp and

:11:55.:11:57.

injuries at the very last moment. At the anniversary games last year, we

:11:58.:12:02.

have seen a lot of bad luck. He has been through the mill, he really

:12:03.:12:05.

has, but you've got to put back to bed. He is in the now. He is in a

:12:06.:12:12.

fine, rich vein of form. He knows it's his time. I think he is hungry

:12:13.:12:17.

to take those opportunities. Very modest in nature but hungry, hungry

:12:18.:12:21.

to start running and making up for lost time. He said that he has done

:12:22.:12:25.

more sessions this year over the hurdles than he thinks he managed in

:12:26.:12:30.

two seasons with his injuries and you know as a body who has coached a

:12:31.:12:34.

hurdler how important that is, for him to go technically competent.

:12:35.:12:39.

It's the only way forward in athletics, is to have consistency,

:12:40.:12:43.

to be able to put those races together, to be able to lay down

:12:44.:12:46.

year-on-year those performances. They will be very careful with him

:12:47.:12:50.

at Loughborough, gentle to make sure he doesn't put spikes on a lot, but

:12:51.:12:56.

he is getting work done and that is tremendous background work. Let's

:12:57.:13:02.

not forget that. Let's get out there then and Steve Cram is your

:13:03.:13:04.

commentator for the final race of the evening on the track.

:13:05.:13:10.

Thanks, Gabby, as we introduce the defending champion,

:13:11.:13:18.

Martinot-Lagarde, as it was a French 123 last year. -- last time round.

:13:19.:13:24.

Thankfully, no injury problems for Andy Pozzi, the man from

:13:25.:13:30.

Stratford-upon-Avon club. Eight out of eight wins this year, including

:13:31.:13:36.

one over perhaps one of his major rivals here, that you will see in a

:13:37.:13:41.

second. This is manga, the French athlete. There are three Frenchmen

:13:42.:13:47.

in this. He was a good starter. A little bit of a surprise he has made

:13:48.:13:53.

it three. And then this man. This is the Olympic silver medallist

:13:54.:13:56.

outdoors. He has only had one defeat this year, as I was then, to Andy

:13:57.:14:03.

Pozzi. So, can that be repeated here in this final? Then our eighth

:14:04.:14:07.

contender, Andreas Martinson of Denmark. We saw the Czech athlete

:14:08.:14:18.

introduced, so everywhere you look, there are threats, theoretically for

:14:19.:14:24.

policy, but he has been in such good form, the world leader, as we go

:14:25.:14:31.

along the line. The surprise package was judged a pitch -- Trajkovic. The

:14:32.:14:49.

last five championships, you have needed to run so quickly Andy Pozzi

:14:50.:14:55.

has done that -- Andy Pozzi has done that so many times this year. So,

:14:56.:15:08.

Andy Pozzi and Ortega, Lane five and seven, the defending champion in

:15:09.:15:13.

Lane four. The men's 60m hurdles final. The last event of the first

:15:14.:15:17.

day of this European Indoor Championships.

:15:18.:15:32.

Pozzi does not get a good start. Pozzi gets it. Pozzi just got there

:15:33.:15:48.

in the end. The winning time, I said you had to go under 7.5. It might

:15:49.:15:53.

get rounded down. The man sitting next to me knows what it takes to

:15:54.:15:57.

win then. He won that the hardware. That might have been his worst race

:15:58.:16:02.

of the seasonal one of them but he got it. He has won the gold medal.

:16:03.:16:06.

Well done. All of that hard work, all of those injuries can be

:16:07.:16:10.

forgotten now. He is rewarded with the title of European indoor

:16:11.:16:11.

champion. He joins Colin Jackson, who won it

:16:12.:16:26.

three times. And Colin will have a little look at this. But, that was

:16:27.:16:29.

not one of his best. He found a way to win an is what is important. That

:16:30.:16:32.

will always be crucial. Forget that time. The most important thing is

:16:33.:16:34.

that he has this title. He has run fast all season. We know he has the

:16:35.:16:38.

performances behind him. He was a little bit left of the blocks. That

:16:39.:16:42.

was the vital thing is that you want to get to the first hurdle as

:16:43.:16:45.

quickly as you can he fought his way through foot at this is where he has

:16:46.:16:51.

shown he is a true champion. In circumstances and situations like

:16:52.:16:54.

this, he can deliver a performance was that will always be the most

:16:55.:16:58.

important thing. That will fill him with more confidence than anything

:16:59.:17:01.

else than running fast times even. The fact he knows he can call

:17:02.:17:05.

himself through and clattering the hurdles. This is not fast at all he

:17:06.:17:15.

will be relieved and happy. I think you are absolutely right. I said it

:17:16.:17:20.

was his worst race. I meant it was the best race of the season and his

:17:21.:17:24.

first one. He has got what he wanted. In terms of execution, to

:17:25.:17:28.

not get out of the blocks and hitting hurdles straight on but

:17:29.:17:32.

fighting for the gold medal. This is the quayside as champions does he

:17:33.:17:36.

did keep his cool. He knew there was pressure to the left and right of

:17:37.:17:41.

him. He knew what was going on. It is really good that he has pulled

:17:42.:17:44.

himself through, managed to get this title. Have a look at that

:17:45.:17:49.

expression takes the victory by one 100th. We know he is the champion.

:17:50.:17:54.

He is Britain boss Mac first gold-medallist. Well done, Andrew

:17:55.:18:02.

Pozzi. -- Britain's first gold-medallist. It has been well

:18:03.:18:06.

documented, all of the problems he had. In that interview, he is still

:18:07.:18:12.

the young man and still getting better as he himself knows. There is

:18:13.:18:15.

still a lot of exploring to do in terms of what he can do outdoors in

:18:16.:18:21.

the 110 hurdles as well. At the moment, Colin, outdoors, there is

:18:22.:18:25.

nobody completely dominated like we have had in the past. He has had a

:18:26.:18:30.

real chance in the summer. We have had back, session. We have talked

:18:31.:18:36.

about his potential in the summer. People sometimes must embody is not

:18:37.:18:41.

just a good hurdler, he must sprint well as well. I'm looking forward to

:18:42.:18:44.

hearing challenging the sprinters and showing people what he is

:18:45.:18:47.

capable of. Very quick between the hurdles. We had to be at the end we

:18:48.:18:51.

came up the last hurdle and fought for the gold medal. He has been

:18:52.:18:56.

awarded with European chart -- title. Right over on the far side in

:18:57.:19:02.

lane one, another former champion somehow got himself in for the

:19:03.:19:06.

bronze medal. A close race. No medal for the Olympic silver-medallist

:19:07.:19:10.

down in seventh. Gold for Great Britain. What it really in way to

:19:11.:19:18.

end day one. It must be so satisfying for an athlete when you

:19:19.:19:22.

have shown that form all season and posted those times. The moment it

:19:23.:19:26.

counts and medals that will be there for ever to seal the deal, if you

:19:27.:19:30.

like. Absolutely. That is what it is all about. When he had performed as

:19:31.:19:34.

he has done so far this season, it is coming through the championship.

:19:35.:19:39.

It does not matter about the timing. Given all the stress beforehand and

:19:40.:19:43.

a hanging around watching the women's final finally getting under

:19:44.:19:47.

way. How much do think that played on all of their minds in the men's

:19:48.:19:52.

race, particularly Andy? We saw him in the studio. He stayed sat on the

:19:53.:19:56.

chair, not knowing perhaps how long the fiasco ahead of the women's race

:19:57.:20:00.

would go on for. That is a sign of a champion. Someone who can deal with

:20:01.:20:04.

that pressure, closing off his mind and think about what he needs to do.

:20:05.:20:09.

For us it is very distracting. Let's not have too many. But what Andy has

:20:10.:20:15.

done, it is simply sublime. It was a scrappy race. It was not the best

:20:16.:20:19.

technical race but he shows his mindset was so strong. He is

:20:20.:20:22.

determined and you accept you what he came here to do. How much on the

:20:23.:20:29.

start line would have been going through their heads about those

:20:30.:20:32.

false starts question up with that have contributed to what was not his

:20:33.:20:38.

greatest art? I think nothing. What would that start be down to? You get

:20:39.:20:43.

caught. You get caught little bit and do not react in the way you do.

:20:44.:20:47.

You are a little bit tight. He will have thought about his first

:20:48.:20:50.

movement, or whatever his cue was going in. He has done what he is

:20:51.:20:54.

supposed to do. He is the world number one full study is supposed to

:20:55.:20:57.

win the European title and that is a massive boost for the team. When

:20:58.:21:00.

somebody does what they are supposed to do and wins a medal... That will

:21:01.:21:09.

be a great plus. That will ripple through the team, dizziness, the

:21:10.:21:13.

positivity. Also, the whole taking that race on from a Falstaff and not

:21:14.:21:17.

perhaps being as technically brilliant as he has been all season.

:21:18.:21:21.

Sometimes you are not always in the best condition. It is about that

:21:22.:21:24.

winning meant a la tea and knowing what to do when it counts. He had to

:21:25.:21:30.

be scrappy. He had to be more aggressive than he would have hoped

:21:31.:21:34.

to have been in the hurdles race. We are so used him being silky smooth

:21:35.:21:39.

over the hurdles. Was grit and determination and wanting that medal

:21:40.:21:43.

more than anything in the world. -- that was grit and determination. The

:21:44.:21:47.

ripple effect has on the team is massive. He did not know until the

:21:48.:21:51.

big smile came to his opponents are shaking his hand as if to conceive

:21:52.:21:55.

of the Great Britain fans are holding up that flags nervously, not

:21:56.:21:59.

sure if they were doing the right thing. He has got the goal. Thanks a

:22:00.:22:07.

lot. Gaby arrives in town and we get a gold medal. A gold medal from

:22:08.:22:10.

Andrew Pozzi and all of the hard work you have put in over the years

:22:11.:22:14.

and the injury setbacks they can all be thrown away now, can't they

:22:15.:22:17.

question the goal all is yours and you can build from here. We are

:22:18.:22:21.

starting to get there. A slow start. I sat in the box to be safe. I

:22:22.:22:26.

thought I thought I am not going to lose this one I gave everything for

:22:27.:22:38.

a dip on the line. I was not sure. I was over the moon. It was a scrappy

:22:39.:22:42.

race. We had to work hard to get it back after a slow start. I am really

:22:43.:22:47.

happy. It was not a clean race. You hit a few hurdles at the end. The

:22:48.:22:51.

determination and entered with the form and confidence you have got, it

:22:52.:22:55.

brought you through to victory. Even after a slow start, once was into my

:22:56.:22:59.

running, I felt like I could work back through the field and have the

:23:00.:23:01.

speed was a little bit scrappy and a bit closer than we

:23:02.:23:15.

would have liked. I got there in the end. You join exalted company the

:23:16.:23:18.

likes of Colin Jackson who has won it three times. What does it mean

:23:19.:23:21.

for you to get your first senior medal, and a gold medal? It has been

:23:22.:23:24.

a long road. With good determination I am over the moon and it is great.

:23:25.:23:31.

We have always known what a great and talented athlete you are. The

:23:32.:23:38.

dark days he must have seen -- this must have seemed a million years

:23:39.:23:44.

ago. I felt really confident. I had the opportunity to do the training.

:23:45.:23:47.

I have always been half prepare because I have not been able to do

:23:48.:23:51.

the work. To feel like I am starting to get there is everything it is

:23:52.:23:56.

worth it. Congratulations. Enjoy the moment. Seems like a good time to

:23:57.:24:06.

have a look at the medal table. The one goal that from Andrew Pozzi.

:24:07.:24:10.

Germany leading the way. Hungry getting shot put gold and the bronze

:24:11.:24:15.

in the pentathlon as well. Plenty more to come tomorrow at ten golds

:24:16.:24:20.

up for grabs on day to macrocosm we have it all covered for you. On air

:24:21.:24:27.

at 8:30am. -- De two. Onto the red button at 10am for the later on a

:24:28.:24:33.

big session starting at 4:15 p.m.. That is where you can see Andy Pozzi

:24:34.:24:37.

get onto the rostrum and pick up his gold medal. Hopefully there'll be

:24:38.:24:41.

some more a solid day today from those people who we have earmarked

:24:42.:24:46.

as people to watch. Laura Muir has come here with incredible form and

:24:47.:24:51.

smashing records all the way through this winter season. Yes, she has

:24:52.:24:54.

come here in incredible form but come here and set us up a pretty

:24:55.:24:59.

huge task. It was her toughest day today to get through the cultivation

:25:00.:25:03.

is of the 3000 metres this morning and come back four and a half hours

:25:04.:25:07.

later and qualify and look very good in the 1500 metres. Sorry to trouble

:25:08.:25:11.

you. Those lovely shots of Colin giving Andy, presumably

:25:12.:25:16.

congratulations. Looks like he is giving him more advice as well. You

:25:17.:25:22.

know what, in the dark days, having a sounding board sometimes with the

:25:23.:25:26.

athletes, fellow athlete, can help. I think it is great. Colin is a big

:25:27.:25:30.

supporter of Andy does appear piercing his potential and all of

:25:31.:25:35.

that is coming together. It is so lovely when summary with a wealth of

:25:36.:25:39.

experience at Colin has got and if Andy would go on and achieve the

:25:40.:25:43.

kind of things Colin did he would be a great athlete for years to come,

:25:44.:25:53.

wouldn't he. We do not use those athletes in mental ring support

:25:54.:25:56.

roles. We'll was assumed they would be a good coach. The more valuable

:25:57.:26:02.

in terms of insight and understanding. As the sport in

:26:03.:26:10.

Britain. He is just getting himself a microphone under his nose. The

:26:11.:26:14.

disappointment of learning the Nielsen twins would only be one. He

:26:15.:26:20.

has qualified for the 400-metre final. Would you say at this stage

:26:21.:26:25.

that she would be disappointed not to get off the rostrum. She has had

:26:26.:26:35.

two personal bests. Understanding what it takes, she has run so

:26:36.:26:39.

maturely, competently and put herself in the right position. You

:26:40.:26:42.

can never discount anybody but it would be a big ask. Why matter she

:26:43.:26:50.

does have incredible maturity. She is also having fun with it. She is

:26:51.:26:55.

in the final now. Anything can happen. When you go in with the

:26:56.:26:58.

attitude is not like having the weight that Andy posing would have.

:26:59.:27:05.

A minute left. If we do not look at your predictions, it will look like

:27:06.:27:11.

these are your predictions and they are ahead of the championships.

:27:12.:27:17.

Denise reckons two goals, three silvers and two bronze. You're

:27:18.:27:20.

keeping it quite lean. Tony is very excited. He is gone for 12 in total.

:27:21.:27:27.

I still happen? There are another couple I should probably put in now.

:27:28.:27:34.

Steve Cram going five golds. Paul, two less. I came in late. I was four

:27:35.:27:40.

I put so much time into this and analyse it, I'm just going to go

:27:41.:27:45.

three, three, three. Only five golds up for grabs today but ten tomorrow.

:27:46.:27:48.

Will Great Britain get their hands on some of those was that it has

:27:49.:27:54.

been a brilliant way to end day one with Andy Pozzi winning the 60-metre

:27:55.:27:59.

hurdles. Tomorrow all eyes will be on Laura Muir as she tries to take

:28:00.:28:01.

home the gold from Belgrade. One of the greatest races in

:28:02.:28:18.

history. He is going to get there. The managers to run is under way. --

:28:19.:28:25.

the Manchester Run is under way.
