Welcome to the European indoor Championships from the Serbian

:00:50.:01:01.

capital Belgrade. It's a really impressive run by Tom Lancashire. He

:01:02.:01:08.

got it absolutely right. A gold medal for Thiam. Nielsen looks to be

:01:09.:01:11.

fairly comfortable. Pozzi gets it! He's got it, he's won

:01:12.:01:35.

the gold medal! A very good morning from Belgrade. This horror story

:01:36.:01:41.

city in Serbia hosting the European indoor Championships -- the historic

:01:42.:01:45.

city in Serbia. There were five golds on offer yesterday, plenty

:01:46.:01:50.

more today. A packed afternoon we have in store, dominated with

:01:51.:01:53.

qualifiers for the athletes. We'll be talking through those and looking

:01:54.:01:58.

ahead to this afternoon and learning more about Serbia. Last night I had

:01:59.:02:05.

my tea in the Novak Djokovic restaurant. Let's say a very good

:02:06.:02:12.

morning to our commentary team in the box, Steve Cram and Andrew

:02:13.:02:16.

Cotter and Steve Backley. Colin and Denise are in the studio. I think

:02:17.:02:22.

we'll get straight on with the action, it's the 60 hurdles for the

:02:23.:02:27.

men's heptathlon. Ashley Bryant going in the first. COMMENTATOR:

:02:28.:02:33.

Ashley Bryant involved in this first heat in the men's 60 metres which

:02:34.:02:37.

will get us under way. A sparse crowd which will build. There is

:02:38.:02:42.

Serbian involvement but Ashley Bryant is in lane three. There is

:02:43.:02:49.

Ashley Bryant. Just missed the Olympic qualifying standard last

:02:50.:02:53.

year which was rather cruel. An airline lost his poles. He's going

:02:54.:03:06.

well this season, he is GB team captain hair. Starting his campaign

:03:07.:03:13.

on 60. That's nothing to do with technical problems. That's Pesic.

:03:14.:03:26.

That was a clear false start. A quick reminder that in multi-events

:03:27.:03:31.

it is not a straight disqualification. While they do this

:03:32.:03:36.

I think Pesic has his warning against the field. Here we one of

:03:37.:03:43.

the first things I was going to chat about was how yesterday was marred

:03:44.:03:46.

by a sequence of falls starts. Ordered to do with speakers being

:03:47.:03:50.

too close, where the athletes hearing the gun quicker than the

:03:51.:03:55.

starter had anticipated? It turns out potentially there was a

:03:56.:03:58.

technical problem in that the starter could hear the beep and he

:03:59.:04:03.

was firing again to declare a falls start. The reaction times would say

:04:04.:04:14.

they weren't false starts. Sometimes you can use your own eyes but it's

:04:15.:04:18.

up to the starter to make those decisions. He would be chastised if

:04:19.:04:23.

the signals were going into his ear and he made a couple of mistakes.

:04:24.:04:29.

Sometimes it was really clear when there were faulty starts. For me it

:04:30.:04:32.

was important that the starter used his initiative and said, do you know

:04:33.:04:37.

what, comeback guys and we'll do this again properly. They would have

:04:38.:04:41.

a general feel that this is really unusual. We don't have so many false

:04:42.:04:47.

starts at major championships. This was probably the most we saw

:04:48.:04:50.

throughout the whole of the Olympic Games in just a couple of hours

:04:51.:04:54.

yesterday. I thought it was really bad and unsettling for the athletes.

:04:55.:04:58.

Let's hope today is a better day. That was a clear falls start. The

:04:59.:05:08.

final of the women's 60 hurdles there and Pedersen in -- from

:05:09.:05:12.

Denmark was eventually disqualified. There was some con club, they

:05:13.:05:21.

thought maybe the mic was too close to the blocks. This morning this is

:05:22.:05:26.

what we've just seen in Ashley Bryant's heat. This was a clear

:05:27.:05:30.

falls start. No arguments about that. Yesterday I think we saw

:05:31.:05:36.

faulty starts by the official, the starter should have been a bit

:05:37.:05:39.

clearer. Hopefully second time lucky. Again, it was a technical

:05:40.:05:45.

problem. All technical problems yesterday which we have been assured

:05:46.:05:48.

have been sorted out. The starter is doing their best but it was a hard

:05:49.:05:58.

day. The Estonian in lane one twitched and set off Darko Pesic.

:05:59.:06:02.

Fingers crossed everyone. 60 to stop the heptathlon. Ashley Bryant got a

:06:03.:06:12.

good start... Bryant trying to get back, it's all about the time. 7.05

:06:13.:06:24.

the Dudas. Anything close to Bryant's personal-best would be a

:06:25.:06:28.

very good start but Ashley Bryant. All about the winner, the local boy,

:06:29.:06:34.

Dudas. He's on the post is all around the stadium and he has

:06:35.:06:37.

delivered to the small crowd here this morning. The first of two time

:06:38.:06:45.

trials. Ashley Bryant, British team captain with a decent run. Dragged

:06:46.:06:48.

along by the Serbian just his left. Worked hard to squeeze out every

:06:49.:07:01.

hunter -- every hundredth. A possibility of medals have been

:07:02.:07:05.

mentioned over the next two macro days. Ashley Bryant has actually got

:07:06.:07:11.

a diminutive figure for a multi-events. He's quite short. Able

:07:12.:07:16.

to get up quickly. He's not quite at the top end speed of some of the

:07:17.:07:20.

others but he has just run a personal best, 7.0 six. -- 7.06. A

:07:21.:07:36.

very good start for Ashley Bryant as Dudas takes the victory. It's all

:07:37.:07:40.

about the times and Ashley Bryant with a great start. A reminder of

:07:41.:07:44.

the other events to come. There is confirmation of the result.

:07:45.:07:51.

A good start for Ashley Bryant. STUDIO: A great way for the captain

:07:52.:08:10.

to start with a personal best. Here is how the morning pans out.

:08:11.:08:26.

Great Britain has a good trio in the 60 men's 60 metres. Liam Ramsey is

:08:27.:08:41.

coming up in the second heat on a season 's best of seven seconds.

:08:42.:08:46.

Will be hoping to get himself a good clutch of points in this second heat

:08:47.:08:50.

which hopefully will go off without too many problems! A very good start

:08:51.:08:55.

for Ashley Bryant, wasn't it Denise? Yes, a great way to start combined

:08:56.:09:00.

events with a personal best. He's got high aspirations. He's had a

:09:01.:09:07.

really good winter as well. A bit disappointed not to have made the

:09:08.:09:10.

Olympics last year but he so close to that British record that if -- if

:09:11.:09:16.

he has a good day today he could see a new personal best and a new

:09:17.:09:20.

record. Help take inspiration from the final race of yesterday evening,

:09:21.:09:27.

we saw that wonderful final from Pozzi which for you seem to be even

:09:28.:09:31.

more nostalgic. We saw you having a chat with him afterwards, tell us

:09:32.:09:35.

what you were talking about. It was to remind him how good he is. Now

:09:36.:09:38.

that he can truly believe in himself. Not that he ever ultimately

:09:39.:09:44.

doubted himself but you have to prove it to yourself. You must have

:09:45.:09:48.

doubt setting in when you have had injuries like that. Winning the

:09:49.:09:53.

championship 's nails it for you to say, I can do that. Andrew knows he

:09:54.:09:58.

ran a particularly good race, smack in the middle of the field. He goes

:09:59.:10:03.

into this competition as the favourite. He was really laboured in

:10:04.:10:08.

his blocks. What was really crucial was he made no mistakes in the

:10:09.:10:11.

acceleration phase of the race. Even though he's slow out the box, no

:10:12.:10:16.

mistakes over hurdle one or hurdle two. He clattered them, three and

:10:17.:10:23.

four, slightly off-balance, but the fact he already had its impetus and

:10:24.:10:27.

rhythm in place meant he could get through and win the title. How hard

:10:28.:10:32.

is that, when you've had a poor start and you are the favourite, the

:10:33.:10:38.

temptation to try and overcompensate which is where you would clattered

:10:39.:10:41.

the first hurdle is what we see go wrong time and again. What you do

:10:42.:10:48.

automatically is to chase. He didn't do that. He just kept calm and he

:10:49.:10:52.

did what he was supposed to do all the way through that race. It was

:10:53.:10:56.

scrappy but we don't care. Just take the title. And to back up the

:10:57.:11:01.

fantastic season he's had so far, the fact he's been able to get this

:11:02.:11:06.

bank of training, he's gone into championships not really fully

:11:07.:11:09.

cooked and having to compensate for a lack of training. It will give him

:11:10.:11:14.

so much confidence going to the worlds. Completely. Getting

:11:15.:11:19.

back-to-back sessions, knowing what you are capable of. His speed, Colin

:11:20.:11:27.

you said he's a very quick on the flat and that's made a difference to

:11:28.:11:30.

him and his confidence, that he can trust his body. But the training is

:11:31.:11:34.

there, the back-up is there, and that bodes well for an entire

:11:35.:11:38.

season. Of course, when you bring in the rest of the world, there are

:11:39.:11:42.

some fantastic hurdlers from the Americas and he's going to have

:11:43.:11:47.

tough competition. We over egging his opportunity this year, is he

:11:48.:11:51.

going to be up there with those guys challenging the medals in London?

:11:52.:11:55.

Last year everything was haphazard because he didn't have the

:11:56.:11:58.

consistency of training. Headline of thinking, what am I going to produce

:11:59.:12:03.

this year? Now he has that bank of training behind him and the belief

:12:04.:12:07.

he win fast and it will have a completely different changing his

:12:08.:12:10.

mind set. Now I think it'll be really positive and not afraid of

:12:11.:12:15.

taking on the rest of the world. Watch him in London. We are looking

:12:16.:12:18.

forward to seeing how he goes through the net vulnerable rest of

:12:19.:12:26.

season. His ceremony is at 4:40pm. They are coming out now for the

:12:27.:12:32.

second 60 metres, Liam Ramsey is in this one in lane eight. Andrew

:12:33.:12:35.

Cotter would like to commentate this rather fabulous X Factor build-up

:12:36.:12:41.

here. A great track. COMMENTATOR: You would think so but you would be

:12:42.:12:51.

wrong! Anyway, here is Kristjan Rosenberg from Estonia. His season

:12:52.:13:03.

's best time is 7.01. This is the outstanding multi-events, hyped

:13:04.:13:06.

athlete for this weekend, Kevin Mayer. He is a big star, a big star

:13:07.:13:15.

in France and the man to beat this weekend. Simone Cairoli of Italy.

:13:16.:13:28.

These are the quick as printers. -- quicker sprinters. The quickest

:13:29.:13:39.

actually Dominik Distelberger. A threat to Kevin Mayer might come

:13:40.:13:51.

from the next man to be Jorge Urena. Anything over 6000 points is pretty

:13:52.:13:52.

useful. The European Championship

:13:53.:14:12.

silver-medallist, Adam Helcelet. There are a couple of Czech athletes

:14:13.:14:30.

in this line-up. Jiri Sykora. And the second British athlete, Liam

:14:31.:14:38.

Ramsey from the city of Sheffield. He had dreams of going to Rio and

:14:39.:14:46.

didn't quite make it. From Edlington near Doncaster. He has a season 's

:14:47.:14:51.

best time of seven seconds flat. He'll have seen what Ashley Bryant

:14:52.:14:54.

did and that's all he's looking for as well. Kevin Mayer goes in lane

:14:55.:15:05.

two. It is the 60 and then the long jump

:15:06.:15:26.

and the shot put. The high jump, pole vault and finishing with the

:15:27.:15:29.

1000 metres in heptathlon for the men.

:15:30.:15:37.

It is all about those times. We already have a personal best for

:15:38.:15:43.

Ashley Bryant in the first heat. What can Liam Ramsey do and how can

:15:44.:15:45.

Kevin Maher start. Stand down, keep calm. Rosenberg and

:15:46.:16:06.

again a reminder in multi-eventing that you're allowed one false start.

:16:07.:16:11.

Effectively that is given against the field and the next would be

:16:12.:16:19.

disqualification. You can just see him twitching. A

:16:20.:16:29.

three-metre twitch. A lot of criticism yesterday of the starters

:16:30.:16:34.

but the fourth start we had this morning, very much down to the

:16:35.:16:38.

athletes with a bit of nerves on the second day here in Belgrade. The

:16:39.:16:44.

Estonian Rosenberg, a good history of multi-events. Olympic champion in

:16:45.:16:51.

2004 Estonia. Here comes the shepherds crook again. It cannot be.

:16:52.:17:00.

That is the first. Effectively forced start now against the field

:17:01.:17:09.

courtesy of Rosenberg. They all said thank you, Christian.

:17:10.:17:23.

Liam Ramsey settled in again. So Rosenberg, Kevin Maher into.

:17:24.:17:33.

Distelberger in number four. Helcelet in six. And another

:17:34.:17:50.

athlete, Sykora in layman 's number eight. That looked to be

:17:51.:17:55.

Distelberger, who is a great sprinter in heptathlete terms. To

:17:56.:18:00.

the naked eye again that will be a disqualification. I feel for these

:18:01.:18:07.

starters. They all had technical problems yesterday and now they have

:18:08.:18:12.

had three actual falls starts today. Two of them very clear and bent one,

:18:13.:18:19.

looking at Distelberger, and there is some movement alongside him but I

:18:20.:18:24.

do not know. It looks like Distelberger after a little bit of

:18:25.:18:29.

the twitch from his neighbour. The guys will have watched the races

:18:30.:18:33.

yesterday and they will have known that there were issues with the

:18:34.:18:38.

start. Athletes are nervous anyway coming out into the arena and that

:18:39.:18:44.

is just compounding it. But very much athlete error it would seem so

:18:45.:18:47.

far and a disqualification potentially afoot. So he has those

:18:48.:18:52.

reaction times written on that piece of paper. We do not get to see them

:18:53.:18:58.

any more because of the technical problems yesterday, that is

:18:59.:19:00.

understandable. Let's listen in. That is a conduct warning, that

:19:01.:19:16.

card. Not a disqualification. He has not done anything wrong.

:19:17.:19:42.

Exactly what he rams they would not have wanted. Just having senior

:19:43.:19:48.

team-mate running a personal best, Ashley Bryant. He wants to get the

:19:49.:19:52.

race away and sub seven seconds would be ideal and now I think get

:19:53.:19:57.

it over as quickly as possible. It would help if the technical problems

:19:58.:20:01.

had been sorted out and we could see the reaction times. Again there are

:20:02.:20:08.

not furnishing us with that information. Ramsay settles in

:20:09.:20:24.

again. The second heat of this 60 metres to start the men's

:20:25.:20:29.

heptathlon. Wakely this time. Distelberger going

:20:30.:20:44.

strongly. Not blisteringly quick but below seven seconds. Pretty sharp

:20:45.:20:51.

for those multi-eventers. Ramsay, his personal best, he will be down

:20:52.:20:54.

on that. That will be a little bit frustrating. Because he is quicker

:20:55.:21:02.

than that. But these athletes just happy I think to move through and

:21:03.:21:06.

still be in the competition after a couple of false starts. Urena

:21:07.:21:19.

they're one of the medal contenders, getting his nose in front and he

:21:20.:21:28.

keeps it there. A decent start from Ramsay but a little bit outclassed

:21:29.:21:38.

by the speed of the Spaniard. Urena comfortably sub seven man on a

:21:39.:21:47.

basis. Ramsay just lost some ground in the middle. Just outside of seven

:21:48.:21:52.

seconds. And OK start, not setting the world alight but OK for Ramsay.

:21:53.:21:57.

Just looking for confirmation of his time. Urena winning it alongside

:21:58.:22:07.

Distelberger. And for Ramsay his time is 7.12. A

:22:08.:22:25.

little bit down on his personal best. But finally everyone up and

:22:26.:22:33.

running in the men's heptathlon. Thank you, Andrew. That has put is

:22:34.:22:37.

about 13 minutes behind schedule, those races. We now have a total of

:22:38.:22:44.

eight 60 keeps with the men and women. We're going to be well into

:22:45.:22:52.

the afternoon now. Quite a bad start after a bad day yesterday. The

:22:53.:22:56.

officials did the right thing for you, issuing conduct warning instead

:22:57.:23:05.

of penalising anyone? That is a -- that is exactly what Denise said,

:23:06.:23:09.

just issuing that conduct warning and keeping the discipline. It can

:23:10.:23:15.

escalate time and again. What we witnessed I thought they were clear

:23:16.:23:19.

for starts by the athletes. So it was just like calm down, relax and

:23:20.:23:23.

let's get this thing in order. That will give the women more confidence

:23:24.:23:27.

now because they will have watched that again and thought, that was a

:23:28.:23:33.

false start. So hopefully that will let the discipline followed through

:23:34.:23:38.

those events. At the start of the day for a multi-eventer with a long

:23:39.:23:44.

day ahead, have you ever experienced anything like that? Nothing like

:23:45.:23:48.

this. Falls starts, there is the potential of going out. But what

:23:49.:23:56.

we've seen at these so far is record-breaking in terms of the

:23:57.:24:00.

faulty starts. And it puts a dampener not only on the crowd but

:24:01.:24:04.

on the hosts as well. It is a proud thing to host a championships and it

:24:05.:24:09.

is a great city with some really good athletes to showcase. It just

:24:10.:24:13.

needs to be sorted out. I think they're being more cautious today.

:24:14.:24:20.

Issuing bad conduct warning, it is a good sign. Well let's hope the

:24:21.:24:24.

gremlins are out of the works now. Steve Cram, take it away. We do not

:24:25.:24:33.

like those gremlins! First thing on a Saturday morning. It is not good

:24:34.:24:37.

for the athletes but to be fair to be officials, I think that was the

:24:38.:24:41.

fault of the athletes and hopefully all the equipment is working

:24:42.:24:47.

properly. Into the 60 metres, fairly straightforward qualification. The

:24:48.:24:50.

first four to go through the fourth fastest losers. This first heat has

:24:51.:25:06.

this young lady, Svoboda of Poland. Next to her is Burghardt. But this

:25:07.:25:22.

is a wide open event. Asha Philip going for Great Britain. No clear

:25:23.:25:27.

favourite heading into this 60 metres. These heats might give us

:25:28.:25:33.

some indication as to who has brought their best form to these

:25:34.:25:34.

championships. The full line-up. So the top four. Swoboda really a

:25:35.:26:03.

perfect example of a good 60-metre runner in terms of stature.

:26:04.:26:07.

Powerfully built, and really starter. 7.07 last year. 7.15 this

:26:08.:26:30.

year. Clearly away, Swoboda. Swoboda just get the nod. 7.22. Just

:26:31.:26:39.

double-checking as they clattered into those crash mats at the end. So

:26:40.:26:43.

Swoboda and Burghardt are well clear. For athletes to go through

:26:44.:26:53.

but easy qualification, semifinals. Tomorrow, actually. The men have

:26:54.:27:00.

their final today but not for the women.

:27:01.:27:06.

Not a huge amount to pick over, fairly comfortable qualifying for

:27:07.:27:14.

Swoboda and Burghardt, along Wakely. Force them to go through. But the

:27:15.:27:23.

calibre of Swoboda and Burghardt, it was never going to be an issue. But

:27:24.:27:29.

as you say Swoboda built like a 60 metres sprinter, short and powerful.

:27:30.:27:34.

This will always be her strength rather than the 100th. She takes it

:27:35.:27:41.

comfortably enough. Burghardt has a much longer stride and she can relax

:27:42.:27:46.

towards the end. Swoboda keeping the pressure on a little bit. It was

:27:47.:27:54.

very tight. The Portuguese and Spanish athletes taking the other

:27:55.:28:05.

qualification spots. The rest into the 7.5s. The overall standard

:28:06.:28:11.

really not that high. Others not really running back quickly to get

:28:12.:28:21.

to the semis. The winning time in the end, 7.21.

:28:22.:28:34.

We have seen already Swoboda and Burghardt, certainly in the 60

:28:35.:28:41.

metres for the men, a raft of British contenders. And five of the

:28:42.:28:45.

top six times in Europe this year has been achieved by British

:28:46.:28:50.

athletes. For the women it is Asha Philip who is the obvious one. She

:28:51.:28:54.

is not going here but she has got to be a contender for the gold medal. I

:28:55.:29:01.

think so, she is in good shape. She has run a couple of races on the

:29:02.:29:04.

European circuit, Birmingham perhaps not her best. Colin joining us in

:29:05.:29:11.

the commentary box. European sprinting at the minute, when you

:29:12.:29:15.

look at the overall quality on the women's and men's side, Great

:29:16.:29:19.

Britain is right up there but overall, there is a question mark.

:29:20.:29:29.

We have lost a bit of sprinting power, Frist not really producing

:29:30.:29:34.

the best that they are capable of. Some of their key names missing. And

:29:35.:29:40.

Germany, for the men, very good indoor sprinters. So we are lacking

:29:41.:29:44.

a little bit I guess of quality all the way through. But the British

:29:45.:29:49.

athletes are at the top and for us that is only a good thing. Well

:29:50.:29:55.

there is a British athlete in this, Charlotte Wingfield who competes now

:29:56.:30:05.

for water. One of the contenders there, Povh. But the calibre is not

:30:06.:30:20.

of the highest at the moment. For the women.

:30:21.:30:30.

The Belarussian champion there, Timanouskaya.

:30:31.:30:44.

There is Charlotte Wingfield, Cardiff athletics club, who now runs

:30:45.:30:53.

for Malta. She has a Maltese father. Welsh indoor champion. So you've got

:30:54.:31:03.

four to go through automatically and the four fastest losers to

:31:04.:31:08.

tomorrow's semifinals. This is the second five first-round heats.

:31:09.:31:19.

A very, very good start by Povh who is dominating this race. She takes

:31:20.:31:34.

it with a comfortable win. Povh a long way clear. Should run 7.14 in

:31:35.:31:42.

Berlin last month. She didn't leave too much out there. 7.24 to win it.

:31:43.:31:51.

Four going through automatically. Povh lays down her marker. Povh is

:31:52.:32:01.

an indoor specialist. She dominates the field very early and keeps

:32:02.:32:05.

moving away comfortably. She worked hard for this, really hard. You have

:32:06.:32:14.

your warm up, it's early morning, the body isn't that could be the

:32:15.:32:22.

reason why. She knows when she read this start that she would be the

:32:23.:32:29.

dominant factor in this race. This time in the morning that is not too

:32:30.:32:31.

bad. Povh goes through. STUDIO: I am disappointed not to see

:32:32.:32:56.

Daphne Shippers. There was a while ago one Dutch woman who loved to fly

:32:57.:32:57.

indoors. COMMENTATOR: Away they go. Cooman is

:32:58.:33:20.

going to win this one. That was a remarkable turnout for Cooman of

:33:21.:33:35.

Holland. Cooman wins it! A new world record. Cooman has retained her

:33:36.:33:46.

60-metre title, a new world record. Cooman flying. She got away

:33:47.:33:52.

brilliantly. Cooman is clear... Nelli Cooman wins the title and

:33:53.:33:56.

defends it so well. Away they go. In the middle it's very close... Its

:33:57.:34:13.

Cooman. That is quite remarkable. Cooman away well. Cooman gets it! A

:34:14.:34:22.

marvellous performance. Nelli Cooman, five times winner of this

:34:23.:34:29.

title for Holland in lane number six. Cooman with a blistering start.

:34:30.:34:36.

Cooman in the photograph with the German. Cooman gets it, six times

:34:37.:34:46.

the winner of this European title. STUDIO: There weren't too many

:34:47.:34:52.

better than Nelli Cooman indoors. A real indoor specialist although she

:34:53.:34:56.

never really transferred any of those performances to anything

:34:57.:35:12.

significant outdoors. A typical so, heat number three decent

:35:13.:35:13.

performances I guess so far. There is Akakpo, getting close to

:35:14.:35:36.

her personal best. Keep making the point that because there is no

:35:37.:35:41.

outstanding favourite, somebody could nick a surprise medal and get

:35:42.:35:51.

into the start. I said congratulations to Andy yesterday,

:35:52.:35:54.

has anyone said anything about the track? Nobody really came back to me

:35:55.:35:58.

and said the track feels really fast or anything like that. I think they

:35:59.:36:03.

are engrossed in the competition because they know everything is so

:36:04.:36:10.

close and so tight. OK. Full line-up from the far side.

:36:11.:36:34.

Kieran Neville in lane three, just 17. -- Ciara Neville. Kambundji

:36:35.:36:45.

coming through the middle with Akakpo. We'll have to have a look at

:36:46.:36:58.

that. Kambundji came to the fore in terms of recognition during those

:36:59.:37:02.

European Championships. One of the big names, she lives in zero I

:37:03.:37:10.

think. One of the big names of Swiss athletics. Didn't need to be too

:37:11.:37:11.

quick there. I haven't seen anything too the only

:37:12.:37:34.

thing we have seen is consistent 7.20s.. Which is fine, its first

:37:35.:37:41.

thing in the morning. The people who are expected to deliver those are

:37:42.:37:49.

delivering them. They are waking themselves up, putting themselves

:37:50.:37:52.

through well. I think the semifinals are going to be very interesting.

:37:53.:38:03.

STUDIO: Heat four in a moment and in heat five Great Britain's

:38:04.:38:08.

representative Asha Philip goes. She arrived in Belgrade and we caught up

:38:09.:38:12.

with her. How much are you looking forward to the weekend? I'm really

:38:13.:38:16.

looking forward to it. I didn't get to compete two years ago so I'm

:38:17.:38:20.

looking forward to it. Are you hungry for it? Most definitely, most

:38:21.:38:26.

definitely hungry for it. What would be a success? I'd like to get a

:38:27.:38:30.

medal, hopefully the shiniest of them all. But, you know, these girls

:38:31.:38:36.

are running quite fast. I'm hoping to pull it out of the bike this

:38:37.:38:42.

weekend and perform at my best. And, home with a shiny medal. What would

:38:43.:38:48.

pulling it out of the bag mean? Definitely a personal best. I'm

:38:49.:38:53.

going to have to run that to get a medal at this Championships.

:38:54.:38:58.

Executing my races. How much do the nerves and the fact it's the

:38:59.:39:01.

European Indoor Championships, how much does that change you

:39:02.:39:07.

physically? I think I work off of that. The more scared I am

:39:08.:39:11.

internally, I feel I perform my best. I probably wouldn't show it as

:39:12.:39:17.

much. You'd know because I'd be quieter than usual! I know it works

:39:18.:39:22.

well for me. Thinking back to last year, the relay quartet. How does

:39:23.:39:29.

that taste of success change your confidence as an individual? It was

:39:30.:39:32.

breathtaking, it makes you more hungry and makes you want to perform

:39:33.:39:36.

at your best so you can have your own individual medal. I'm not saying

:39:37.:39:43.

I'm going to disregard a relay medal because it's a beautiful feeling,

:39:44.:39:46.

especially as we did it as a team. Now I've touched it, I feel like one

:39:47.:39:53.

to myself! How much do you believe you can achieve that this weekend? I

:39:54.:39:56.

can most definitely believe in myself this weekend. STUDIO: She's

:39:57.:40:02.

always got a great smile and should like to put a smile on the fans

:40:03.:40:07.

faces who have come here to cheer on the British athletes. Denise, should

:40:08.:40:10.

like to pull it out the bag and get into the final, and actually it's

:40:11.:40:16.

been said by Steve and Andrew it's a really open field, there's nobody

:40:17.:40:19.

really dominating the indoor 60 sprints for the women said it would

:40:20.:40:24.

be a shock gold but could she get amongst the medals? Should have to

:40:25.:40:27.

execute the perfect place at the moment. She's a great starter, one

:40:28.:40:35.

of the lead-off for by one. Everything has got to go right for

:40:36.:40:38.

her this weekend. She's in a good place mentally. I spoke to her in

:40:39.:40:42.

Birmingham, she was happy and looking forward to the season. It's

:40:43.:40:47.

about making sure she now is the first 30 metres and anything can

:40:48.:40:55.

happen. This is the start list the heat four. COMMENTATOR: I'm not sure

:40:56.:41:05.

listening to Asha Philip talking about needing a personal best to win

:41:06.:41:14.

the gold, she's run 7.09 before, I'm not sure that is required to win the

:41:15.:41:16.

gold here. By Rebeka Haase. She has been

:41:17.:42:12.

running well this season. We've talked about that. Equalling her

:42:13.:42:17.

season's best, her personal best. A very impressive opener from the

:42:18.:42:21.

German. Yes, German athletics hopefully is under a resurgence in

:42:22.:42:27.

women's sprinting. Let's have a look. Out of the blocks. Everything

:42:28.:42:32.

very controlled. Not really explosive but it's effective.

:42:33.:42:41.

Hitting the ground quickly. Very well. That propels her forward. You

:42:42.:42:46.

can see her moving away from the field. There's not a huge try a

:42:47.:42:52.

phrase there. It's effective and it's far it's the fastest of the

:42:53.:43:10.

morning. But was a controlled race there. That is a quick time, no

:43:11.:43:15.

doubt about that. So the automatic qualifiers.

:43:16.:43:28.

There is Asha Philip. She ran the first leg of Great Britain when they

:43:29.:43:34.

won a bronze for Great Britain. She was an Olympic medallist. She had

:43:35.:43:38.

that terrible injury, she was a trampoline -ist. She's only 26,

:43:39.:43:42.

feels like she's been around a while. She still has a great passion

:43:43.:43:49.

for trampolining and coaches kids. She was relaxed in Birmingham and

:43:50.:43:53.

always has that smile on her face. She's a great advert for the sport.

:43:54.:44:05.

She's the only female in the group now and I wondered how that would

:44:06.:44:10.

affect but she said I'm loving it, she's in a good place. Which is

:44:11.:44:19.

important for athletes. A lot of people will be surprised, good

:44:20.:44:25.

morning Toni Minichiello, a lot of people would be surprised Britain

:44:26.:44:30.

gets a bronze medal and has a rich crop coming through and we only have

:44:31.:44:35.

one female in the 60 metres. What is the thinking behind people's

:44:36.:44:38.

seasons? There's a couple of things here. I think Dina Asher-Smith would

:44:39.:44:46.

be here if she wasn't injured. This is the year after the Olympics, when

:44:47.:44:50.

you work so hard to get to the Olympics and perform it of a fallow

:44:51.:44:56.

year. You take a six months sabbatical and get yourself ready to

:44:57.:44:59.

run the Championships and everyone is looking at London and the World

:45:00.:45:03.

Championships there. Absolutely. She will be looking to that if she can

:45:04.:45:07.

get herself into the kind of shape to help Britain get going in the

:45:08.:45:09.

relay. There will be an incredible

:45:10.:45:20.

atmosphere and we look forward to them later in the year.

:45:21.:45:30.

So the fifth heat and Asha Philip -- Asha Philip in lane before.

:45:31.:45:44.

Mayer of Germany will be her main rival. Only third in the German

:45:45.:45:57.

challenge but Germany are doing well with their hurdles events as well.

:45:58.:46:11.

We had Healey running yesterday and another athletes who competed in the

:46:12.:46:22.

same event had a terrible fall in that 400 heat. But thankfully she is

:46:23.:46:31.

OK. So Asha Philip, 2014 was a big year for her. She ran that on a

:46:32.:46:43.

couple of occasions. The world indoors in Poland. She would love to

:46:44.:46:50.

rediscover that kind of form. Next to her it may well have been

:46:51.:46:56.

the Greek athlete. We will wait and see. Hopefully that is a

:46:57.:47:10.

straightforward fall start. Asha Philip, so far Haase was the one who

:47:11.:47:21.

was looking best. But she has run a couple of events at 7.09. I think

:47:22.:47:28.

that would be enough to take the gold medal. I think she could get

:47:29.:47:35.

close to that time. It is going to be all about the start. The person

:47:36.:47:41.

who runs the first 20 metres the most aggressively but also the most

:47:42.:47:45.

controlled will put a lot of pressure on everyone else. Because

:47:46.:47:48.

they know there is no clear favourite. Who can come past them.

:47:49.:47:56.

So with that in mind I think Asha Philip will know that she needs to

:47:57.:48:00.

nail a very good start. There is the red card. Her reaction time coming

:48:01.:48:05.

up on the screen. They have confidence in their system again and

:48:06.:48:09.

they have gone public. It was I think fairly obvious. I'm going to

:48:10.:48:27.

call her Rafaela. That is her first name. Not obvious from that angle

:48:28.:48:33.

but when it happened then it was fairly obvious. So in the middle

:48:34.:48:45.

lanes we have Mayer and Asha Philip. You do not think about times in the

:48:46.:48:50.

final, you get used to the starting system and get familiar with it and

:48:51.:48:55.

the track. You can use these rounds, you have got to qualify, but this

:48:56.:49:00.

all helps in terms of when the final comes.

:49:01.:49:07.

Asha Philip gets a pretty good start, away from Mayer. Mayer comes

:49:08.:49:20.

back. Not a great first time at 7.26 but got pretty well away from the

:49:21.:49:28.

blocks. Good reactions. Good pick-up and then when she's into the running

:49:29.:49:35.

then it is all over. No week to run superfast but a good start. -- no

:49:36.:49:41.

need. A very good start. The most important thing, when you put your

:49:42.:49:46.

foot down on the floor of that is when the power it can get through

:49:47.:49:49.

you and you get into that beautiful running action. Which Asha actually

:49:50.:50:01.

has. And then she can just wind down. As soon as she puts her foot

:50:02.:50:06.

down she starts to eat up the ground very quickly. She stabs her

:50:07.:50:10.

authority on the field. Everyone else is chasing. She looks far more

:50:11.:50:14.

relaxed than everyone else and moving very smoothly indeed. She

:50:15.:50:17.

glances up and says that is enough, thank you very much. It was this bit

:50:18.:50:26.

of the race, ten, 20 metres, really impressive and then she can relax

:50:27.:50:31.

through. A very good qualification. Mayer also clear and the Irish

:50:32.:50:37.

athlete taking the fourth spot, Healy. We have the semifinals and

:50:38.:50:45.

final tomorrow. So just to clear up the result and then we can speak to

:50:46.:50:52.

Asha. A personal best for the Swiss athlete in third place. And I think

:50:53.:51:00.

Asha is with us now. Great smile on your face, a fantastic start to your

:51:01.:51:06.

competition. Top four to qualify, you want to qualify in a good lane

:51:07.:51:10.

and that really did help me to win that. You have been able to ease

:51:11.:51:14.

into the competition knowing you have the rest of the day to think

:51:15.:51:20.

about the business then tomorrow? Well I'm going to go and sleep after

:51:21.:51:25.

that early start. And have enough time to recover for the next day.

:51:26.:51:31.

Not a morning person! There is a big difference! I was struggling past

:51:32.:51:36.

morning. That time difference. So I'm just going to push forward and

:51:37.:51:41.

work with the conditions. What do you think will be key to your

:51:42.:51:44.

success tomorrow, you looked so accomplished today. I do not want to

:51:45.:51:50.

just kill myself, three rounds is harder. The boys had to do it in one

:51:51.:51:55.

day but we have an extra day to recover and I'm grateful for that.

:51:56.:51:59.

But definitely good recovery and be able to compete tomorrow. The good

:52:00.:52:06.

news for Asha, only an afternoon session tomorrow so she does not

:52:07.:52:11.

have to get up to early! It makes me laugh when athletes and especially

:52:12.:52:15.

sprinters, actually, that is not fair. No athletes like mornings. But

:52:16.:52:22.

in the world of combined events, 6:30am is a lie in! At times I had

:52:23.:52:31.

to wake up at four o'clock. On our way and getting on the bus at

:52:32.:52:34.

6:30am! I was lucky enough to be involved in

:52:35.:52:39.

the London Marathon and getting a lift at five o'clock in the morning,

:52:40.:52:42.

and these athletes are getting themselves ready, they off in a

:52:43.:52:47.

couple of hours. She will be all right! But she looks good, it was a

:52:48.:52:53.

good start and she was also able to ease up. Had she managed to get,

:52:54.:52:58.

that was the false start and I think she would have gone out much better.

:52:59.:53:03.

This was OK, not the best, she can do much better. But what I love

:53:04.:53:08.

about Asha is that pick-up, it is so dynamic. She can move away from the

:53:09.:53:14.

field very quickly. But she is relaxed, doing just enough to

:53:15.:53:17.

qualify and secure the first place spot. That will give her a good lane

:53:18.:53:22.

for tomorrow, job done. Excellent work. Were you impressed? It is a

:53:23.:53:32.

confident run in the field. The 7.26 is quicker but the rest of the field

:53:33.:53:42.

did not break through 7.30 so it was a pretty soft heat. My only concern

:53:43.:53:46.

is the second part of the race. She gets out and reacts but she never

:53:47.:53:53.

gets those hips under. Her fight position is quite low so she's not

:53:54.:53:57.

apply as much force as the German girl beside her. Not hitting the

:53:58.:54:03.

floor with that same force in the second part of the race. And that is

:54:04.:54:09.

where big business and will be. She will react and put people under

:54:10.:54:14.

pressure but then others may come through if she cannot get that

:54:15.:54:19.

force. Job done here but if you want to step up you will have two address

:54:20.:54:24.

that second part of the race. Well of course it is the man in just a

:54:25.:54:28.

moment and Great Britain have three men going in the 60 metres heats.

:54:29.:54:33.

Coming in just a few moments time. But a certain British athlete who

:54:34.:54:38.

did not just dominate outside but he liked it indoors as well.

:54:39.:54:49.

Linford Christie getting ready for the final. The fastest qualifier.

:54:50.:55:00.

The start is so important, it is his weakest spot. If he gets a good one

:55:01.:55:05.

he could win. Away first time, he is away badly! Linford Christie

:55:06.:55:12.

storming through and he takes the gold medal from a standing start.

:55:13.:55:19.

The final of the European 60 metres indoor Championships. Linford

:55:20.:55:23.

Christie got away reasonably well. He comes storming through! Linford

:55:24.:55:29.

Christie wins and takes the European title.

:55:30.:55:38.

So ready for the first heat. Linford Christie, absolutely fantastic. In

:55:39.:55:49.

1994 we had Colin Jackson, he's blushing now! Look out for the young

:55:50.:56:04.

Danish talent, Hari. And it is a good start from Hari. Clutching the

:56:05.:56:14.

hamstring. That is such a shame for Hari. He is a big talent. Mancini

:56:15.:56:24.

was one of those to take advantage. It is a shame. He was the winner of

:56:25.:56:33.

the Danish indoor title, Hari. 19 years old, the world at his feet but

:56:34.:56:39.

there he has suffered, clutching his hamstring. Mancini on hand to come

:56:40.:56:41.

through. Three go through automatically. Let's take a look at

:56:42.:56:48.

the replay. Out of the blocks really well, aggressive. Worked hard for

:56:49.:56:54.

the first 20, 30 metres. Then bang, the hamstring goes. And from there

:56:55.:57:00.

on he is just frustrated. Nothing that you can do. When you hamstring

:57:01.:57:07.

goes, nothing whatsoever. A flying start as well and he was looking

:57:08.:57:14.

good. Almost 20 metres out, he was hanging on from there and almost

:57:15.:57:18.

held on for third place as well. That third place would be pointless

:57:19.:57:21.

because you know there is no way that he could come back and start

:57:22.:57:25.

again. Such a shame for the young man. So there we go, Mancini going

:57:26.:57:32.

through automatically after that misfortune for Hari.

:57:33.:57:36.

The defending European indoor champion is next, Richard Kilty. Not

:57:37.:57:42.

all plain sailing to get here, he was disqualified in the British

:57:43.:57:49.

Championships at the trial. And he might have that on his mind with

:57:50.:57:54.

these false starts here. The job of an athlete is to focus and with all

:57:55.:57:58.

the distractions going around it is not ideal but he has got a job to do

:57:59.:58:03.

and he will be mindful of that. This is a wide-open competition. There is

:58:04.:58:09.

a real opportunity for the UK to do well in this event. He is defending

:58:10.:58:15.

European champion. We have another Brit, they are very strong in

:58:16.:58:19.

Europe. And this is his moment. And he is well suited to the 60 metres

:58:20.:58:23.

indoors. He has been world champion as well and it suits his style of

:58:24.:58:29.

sprinting, but explosive style. I agree. And looking at how strong we

:58:30.:58:33.

are in Europe, eight British athletes in the top ten. And you

:58:34.:58:41.

would say definitely three in the final. I think there is a chance of

:58:42.:58:46.

one, two, three. We are about dominate in sprinting Europe. Some

:58:47.:58:50.

of the Italians could sneak a medal place but we are in the driving seat

:58:51.:58:56.

in this event. Richard Kilty, who of course reminded us in Birmingham

:58:57.:59:01.

that he became a dad last year as well, he has a new motivation. He

:59:02.:59:07.

has also changed his coaching setup, life has moved on for him in the

:59:08.:59:11.

past year. He has changed his coaching setup quite a bit over the

:59:12.:59:15.

years which is a bit unsettling. As an athlete he has grown and he is

:59:16.:59:21.

maturing and he knows what he needs. And he is well suited to the 60, he

:59:22.:59:25.

knows it is about getting out. This will set up his season very well if

:59:26.:59:29.

he can maintain his form and not think about the winning before he

:59:30.:59:35.

has actually done the running. Good advice. Steve Cram, let's see if he

:59:36.:59:41.

can get off to a good start. It is an interesting point with Richard

:59:42.:59:45.

and his starting. I was in Sheffield and there was a bit of deja vu about

:59:46.:59:50.

that little scenario at the UK Championships. He did not seem to be

:59:51.:59:57.

that bothered at the time. But here it is a different matter. World

:59:58.:00:01.

indoor champion back in 2014, do not forget that. And a great exponent of

:00:02.:00:07.

the skill of 60 metre running indoors. Andy Robinson won the UK

:00:08.:00:17.

trial and ran very well on the day. And Andy has picked his races

:00:18.:00:21.

carefully. He will be going in the fourth heat and then we have Theo

:00:22.:00:27.

Etienne. Great Britain have never had that one, two, three. Close to

:00:28.:00:31.

it a couple of times. Jason Gardner and Mark Lewis Francis

:00:32.:00:47.

12 back in 2002. -- won two back in 2002. I'll bring Colin in on this.

:00:48.:01:01.

Noted for not doing false starts! Obviously when that false start rule

:01:02.:01:08.

came in we got used to not having any false starts. The discipline of

:01:09.:01:15.

athletes changed. It is a skill, isn't it? Yes. I think the way you

:01:16.:01:22.

articulated that is correct. It's a discipline you've got to learn and

:01:23.:01:25.

you've got to practice in training as well. Even when you're doing your

:01:26.:01:30.

practice starts you should think about holding your position in the

:01:31.:01:33.

set position. Your gun is the release, that is it. You don't need

:01:34.:01:41.

to think about anything else. The only thing experience can tell, the

:01:42.:01:48.

only variable is the time from set to the gun. Every start is slightly

:01:49.:01:55.

different. Even a couple of thousands of a second is the only

:01:56.:01:58.

variable. That can be quite frustrating. In mainland Europe they

:01:59.:02:03.

seem to release you very quickly from the set position to the offer.

:02:04.:02:07.

In Britain there is more of a habit of holding you in the blocks. When

:02:08.:02:11.

you travel the globe the more races you do, the more experience you

:02:12.:02:21.

game. Menga is 29, he is only running new personal best this year.

:02:22.:02:34.

Kilty right in the middle wearing the different coloured number,

:02:35.:02:47.

deflating to -- denoting the defending champion. Kilty hasn't

:02:48.:03:01.

gone that quick this year. Let's see how he gets his campaign underway.

:03:02.:03:05.

There are three races for these men today, semifinals and then final

:03:06.:03:13.

later. Kilty gets away reasonably well with Menga alongside him. Kilty

:03:14.:03:21.

ease away. I think Volko and Menga will get the other two spots. Not

:03:22.:03:33.

his best start, it was OK and save, gives him a chance to get familiar

:03:34.:03:37.

with the starter. Moved nicely in the middle of the race. 6.61, a good

:03:38.:03:47.

start first thing in the morning. The important thing is to get it

:03:48.:03:52.

under your belt. Get on the track and perform. Richard has won this

:03:53.:03:56.

title before, he's won the world indoors title. This is his

:03:57.:04:02.

territory. He feels confident running the 60 metres. When he

:04:03.:04:06.

starts to move away he looks relaxed and controlled which has got to be

:04:07.:04:10.

the most important thing. Doesn't need to put his foot down heavily on

:04:11.:04:15.

the gas because he knows he's probably the best in the field. Once

:04:16.:04:18.

he starts moving away nobody is coming back to him. The semifinal

:04:19.:04:24.

and final will be very different. You'll have pressure all around him.

:04:25.:04:28.

But he's done it before and I'm sure he's capable of doing again. Surely

:04:29.:04:35.

he's thinking, I'm just cruising this, the last bit. I don't know why

:04:36.:04:40.

he's so stressed about the crop. We're always looking to see how fast

:04:41.:04:44.

we are going -- clock. Richard, a job well done. You've

:04:45.:05:08.

been had time and again and won the big medal. Ahead of a race like that

:05:09.:05:12.

do you feel there is an aura around you? Definitely, coming into the

:05:13.:05:18.

European champion, there's a bit of an aura that comes with it. Tell me

:05:19.:05:25.

about the starts. You've probably seen and heard what was happening

:05:26.:05:28.

here yesterday with the problematic starts, did that play on your mind

:05:29.:05:34.

ahead of the race? I was warned of it, I sat in the blocks and was

:05:35.:05:39.

probably the last one out. I've got the confidence that I can come

:05:40.:05:44.

through. I pulled through nice and comfortable. It was job done, no

:05:45.:05:48.

issues for me today. More to come for you later but you've got three

:05:49.:05:53.

races in a day. How tough can that be? Really tricky, the last two

:05:54.:05:58.

Championships I've been to, there's been a heat on the first day then

:05:59.:06:03.

semifinals the next day. It's a bit tricky, I'll go back, watch a movie,

:06:04.:06:08.

have a nap, get some food, speak to the family and comeback nice and

:06:09.:06:12.

relaxed. Looking forward to getting back here this evening. You are a

:06:13.:06:17.

dad, how has that changed life? It's amazing, I'm engaged to my fiancee

:06:18.:06:25.

now. Got a little baby, hello to those guys back home. I love you

:06:26.:06:30.

both. My family, my mum, my dad, my brothers and sisters, my nieces and

:06:31.:06:34.

nephews, everyone cheering at home, it gives me extra motivation to make

:06:35.:06:41.

them all proud, especially carrying the same name as my little boy, he's

:06:42.:06:50.

my motivation now. His fiancee is a Lithuanian triple jumper. Richard

:06:51.:06:55.

Junior has got some good sporting jeans. He's very confident when his

:06:56.:06:59.

indoors, Richard, and he feels like keys to the manner born. He did a

:07:00.:07:05.

little number one signed to the camera and you like that. I like

:07:06.:07:10.

that. Richard is a very passionate individual and that's a great

:07:11.:07:15.

strength in this environment. He can be -- it can be a weakness, at the

:07:16.:07:20.

British championships you saw how distracted he can be buy something.

:07:21.:07:24.

I think you'll be focused. He's got to be the favourite to win this.

:07:25.:07:35.

He's in good shape. His big opposition will come from the Brits,

:07:36.:07:40.

Robertson and Etienne. This is like a national Championships. Let's have

:07:41.:07:45.

a look at Theo Etienne. He burst onto the scene last year, he's was

:07:46.:07:50.

reserved for the World Indoors, he's five foot one of the shortest

:07:51.:07:55.

sprinters in world sprinting. -- he is five foot four. I don't know much

:07:56.:08:01.

about him either. Diminutive figure. That's a great time, his personal

:08:02.:08:08.

best. He's right up there. He could, if he keeps his head, this is a big

:08:09.:08:13.

deal for him. Don't underestimate how it impacts a young athlete.

:08:14.:08:19.

He'll never have been in the situation before. If he can manage

:08:20.:08:23.

all that, the smile suggests he's quite nervous as well. He should be

:08:24.:08:28.

fine. Just get this heat out of the way and let's have a look at his

:08:29.:08:32.

technique. He's adding a bit of height with his hairdo! It reminds

:08:33.:08:36.

me of the footballer Jason Roberts. He looks relaxed but it's all very

:08:37.:08:42.

new for him. If you come to a championships like that, don't over

:08:43.:08:47.

respect the opposition. You are one of the fastest in Europe and you

:08:48.:08:50.

deserve to be held. He just needs to get out there. He's coached by Ryan

:08:51.:08:58.

Freckleton who is one of the leading sprint coaches now. He'll understand

:08:59.:09:02.

it. The thing is, get out there and run. Let's get out there with Andrew

:09:03.:09:09.

Cotter and Colin. COMMENTATOR: There is the start list. Theo Etienne in

:09:10.:09:15.

lane four. He'll have good competition from Rodriguez and Rene

:09:16.:09:25.

on either side. Most of the sprinters tower over him but he is a

:09:26.:09:37.

flyer. Austin Hamilton, the 19-year-old from Sweden is in six.

:09:38.:09:44.

Clear a good start by Etienne. Etienne is

:09:45.:09:55.

flying down the track, takes the victory. Good run also from

:09:56.:10:03.

Hamilton. Etienne, there is a determined look on his face.

:10:04.:10:09.

Etienne, 6.64, and there is talk of a possible British one, two, three.

:10:10.:10:14.

We talked about him being a youngster and perhaps the thing he

:10:15.:10:17.

will have to deal with is going through the rounds and dealing with

:10:18.:10:22.

three races in one day. He's shown himself to be pretty composed and

:10:23.:10:27.

strong in the first of those races. Yes, the strength of British

:10:28.:10:33.

sprinting means that when you are qualifying you are under a lot of

:10:34.:10:37.

pressure. You've got to qualify for our team. Dealing with pressure and

:10:38.:10:44.

handling it all, by now he's used this. He's really sharp out of the

:10:45.:10:49.

blocks. Aggressive, good cadence, which is ultimately what you need

:10:50.:10:57.

over the 60 metres. Pushing on. You can achieve that by getting a good

:10:58.:11:03.

left both in front and extension at the back. That will increase your

:11:04.:11:07.

range. Ultimately eat up as much ground as you possibly can. When

:11:08.:11:12.

you're reasonably short, you need to maximise that stride length. He's

:11:13.:11:16.

good, he's powerful and he's been rewarded with that 6.62 and Victor

:11:17.:11:26.

E. Good performance. Well done. Tell me the nerves that the start on this

:11:27.:11:30.

kind of occasion for you. I was quite nervous at first, but you've

:11:31.:11:35.

got to treat it like any other race, to be honest. I was happy to get it

:11:36.:11:39.

over and done with. Go back, recover and get ready for the semi. We were

:11:40.:11:44.

talking to Richard about three races in a day potentially, how does that

:11:45.:11:48.

affect your preparations? You need to learn how to recover properly.

:11:49.:11:53.

You've got to make sure you don't mess about, you get back, keep your

:11:54.:11:56.

head down and keep focused really. You were a reserve for the team in

:11:57.:12:01.

the World Indoors last year, how much has that helped you coming

:12:02.:12:06.

here, to have the taste of what the environment is like? I'm really

:12:07.:12:09.

happy to be hair. I was disappointed not to go to Portland but everything

:12:10.:12:14.

happens for a reason. I'm here now and hopefully I can perform for

:12:15.:12:18.

everyone out. Tell me about the support you're getting from Richard,

:12:19.:12:22.

and the general team and how they've been helping you. They've been

:12:23.:12:28.

giving me advice, don't play with any of these mind games, do your

:12:29.:12:31.

thing and you'll be fine at the end of the day. All the best. STUDIO:

:12:32.:12:40.

Keeps it simple and job done, his time has been rounded down to 6.62.

:12:41.:12:51.

How exciting to be a young athlete and experiencing this for the first

:12:52.:12:57.

time, performing where it matters, not having any regrets. Making

:12:58.:13:05.

something of a name of himself. I loved his interviewing. It showed a

:13:06.:13:09.

bit about his personality. Very relaxed, knows what he's got to do.

:13:10.:13:14.

Very mature attitude. Don't mess about, he said. Also knowing how to

:13:15.:13:20.

manage yourself in between these rounds is very important, especially

:13:21.:13:22.

when you're not used to it. Excellent interviewing. He's got

:13:23.:13:28.

swagger which is nice. His running style, he's leaving his foot on the

:13:29.:13:34.

floor a bit too long. He's running completely through the tie which

:13:35.:13:38.

means he's over striding up front. Because of that big open stride it's

:13:39.:13:41.

got a bit of a braking effect before you get your hips over the top. If

:13:42.:13:50.

he tidies that up... Toni said earlier that British men's sprinting

:13:51.:14:00.

is really strong at the moment. His swaggering a bit there, it's

:14:01.:14:04.

contagious! Rightly so. They are good. They know what is at stake

:14:05.:14:09.

here. He's been running really well indoors this season. If he doesn't

:14:10.:14:12.

believe he can raise his game then he's no business being here. I think

:14:13.:14:18.

he could surprise a few people here at this Championships. Some of these

:14:19.:14:22.

guys have something to prove with not going to the Olympics. This is

:14:23.:14:27.

their time. His first sport was rugby but he's very much a sprinter

:14:28.:14:32.

now. British indoor champion, Andrew Robertson. Let's get over to Steve

:14:33.:14:38.

Cram. COMMENTATOR: Interesting competition to Andrew Robertson.

:14:39.:14:42.

He's in great shape, he's got to convert those really good runs he

:14:43.:14:46.

does in Sheffield. He set his personal best there last year before

:14:47.:14:50.

going to the World Indoors where he didn't run as quickly. He doesn't

:14:51.:14:55.

want that to be the case this year. He's coached by his dad Sam and he's

:14:56.:15:01.

in great shape. Very confident. A good starter, you have to be to run

:15:02.:15:07.

the 60. You want him to come into the big race arena and convert that

:15:08.:15:13.

potential that he shows up Sheffield into a championship performance. He

:15:14.:15:17.

doesn't want to leave his fastest time of the year at home, as it

:15:18.:15:22.

were. Every opportunity for Andy Robertson, come the final. First

:15:23.:15:24.

he's got to get through here. There is the top three. We thought

:15:25.:15:44.

of years ago that Tumi was going to be a cracking runner. Molinari from

:15:45.:15:51.

San Marino. So probably Tumi, again another typical 60 metre runner.

:15:52.:15:56.

Rose in lane three comic equalled his personal best this year.

:15:57.:16:01.

Robertson has not been beaten this year on all of his races. He did not

:16:02.:16:09.

go to the Birmingham Grand Prix, did not need to, he had guaranteed

:16:10.:16:13.

selection of the British Championships. Not such a good

:16:14.:16:18.

start. Rose gets away really well. He's just going to stick this one

:16:19.:16:26.

ahead of Tumi. Some names you can explode out of the box. I'm hoping

:16:27.:16:36.

that was safe for Andrew Robertson. The safe thing to do is to stay in

:16:37.:16:49.

the blocks. He came out, got into his running nicely and got past the

:16:50.:17:01.

fast starting Rose. So we have three through. You need to brush off the

:17:02.:17:06.

cobwebs. Your British champion, under a bit of pressure in that

:17:07.:17:11.

sense. And he got caught sleeping a little bit on the blocks. But when

:17:12.:17:15.

you're a good enough, you will qualify and he certainly is. The man

:17:16.:17:19.

everyone is looking at anti-qualified very comfortably. Out

:17:20.:17:25.

of the blocks, even though you take up the reaction and look at what he

:17:26.:17:30.

does when he hit the floor. That is important, that is when you generate

:17:31.:17:34.

power. You're going through all those bases in 60 metres running and

:17:35.:17:39.

he seems to do that very well. He is British champion, this is his big

:17:40.:17:46.

opportunity. He is coming into this competition knowing that he is

:17:47.:17:51.

capable. We are keeping our fingers crossed because this is the

:17:52.:17:59.

semifinals. Well done, Andrew, we were talking

:18:00.:18:02.

about the start and the Finnish combine. I think I missed about ten

:18:03.:18:10.

in the start with the reaction. But I am in really good shape and

:18:11.:18:14.

confident for the events today, really happy. We know you are an

:18:15.:18:20.

explosive start, with the shenanigans going on yesterday at

:18:21.:18:24.

the warnings you had, did that affect you today? Not really. I was

:18:25.:18:30.

watching the TV and I thought what was going on but it gives you the

:18:31.:18:34.

mindset to concentrate on yourself. And winning yesterday was motivation

:18:35.:18:39.

as well. It was in the back of my mind but not distracting. And you

:18:40.:18:43.

have three guys here, all representing Great Britain so

:18:44.:18:47.

proudly, all pushing each other, you all want those medals and it could

:18:48.:18:52.

be potential one, two, three. It is definitely not a given but I have

:18:53.:18:59.

been racing Richard Kilty since I was in use. It is going to be a race

:19:00.:19:04.

to watch, that is for sure. Looking forward to it. Thank you.

:19:05.:19:13.

It is going to be interesting. The British rivalry starting to come

:19:14.:19:16.

through. They will be back this evening but he's safely through. His

:19:17.:19:25.

reaction time 0.71 but that is understandable. They will have to be

:19:26.:19:30.

sharper in the semifinals. So we have semifinals and then the final

:19:31.:19:35.

right at the end this evening. So it is Richard Kilty, Andrew Robertson

:19:36.:19:42.

and feel Essien. The times are relevant, it was three wins and

:19:43.:19:46.

looking very impressive. So those are the 16 men through to the

:19:47.:19:54.

semifinals. The multi-inventors have moved from

:19:55.:19:58.

the 60 metres across to the second event of this heptathlon. The long

:19:59.:20:09.

jump. Samuelsson of Sweden, the first attempt. They get three each.

:20:10.:20:19.

Over seven metres for Samuelsson. A decent start for him. 22 years of

:20:20.:20:30.

age. He is in the form and certainly one to watch. A good discipline as

:20:31.:20:37.

well. Very clean. Showing good composure. 7.40 his season best,

:20:38.:20:58.

Samuelsson. Urena takes his first attempt in the long jump. He hit the

:20:59.:21:05.

ball hard, you could hear that. Really attacked it well. Urena

:21:06.:21:14.

trying to convert that speed, he does not look impressive. Look at

:21:15.:21:24.

that, that has cost him. He did not get the lift that he would have

:21:25.:21:28.

expected. But wait for the measurement.

:21:29.:21:38.

It is 7.37 for Urena. A decent first attempt despite the distance behind

:21:39.:21:49.

the board. Ashley Bryant has been jiggling around, doing his drills,

:21:50.:21:52.

looking to get support from the crowd. He ran a lifetime best in the

:21:53.:22:05.

60s. Just to remind you. 7.06. Faster than he ran at the end of

:22:06.:22:11.

January in the Czech Republic when he put together a really healthy

:22:12.:22:18.

heptathlon. Anything in excess of 7.50 would be great. Is it a white

:22:19.:22:27.

flag? It is. Right, then. This is a really good start for Ashley Bryant.

:22:28.:22:33.

Just made a slight adjustment but continued with the momentum, the

:22:34.:22:37.

speed. Space to spare. Wherever this is measured, it is worth a bit more.

:22:38.:22:45.

Tim topped were we should mention, a British record-holder. A very good

:22:46.:22:56.

start at 7.60, taking the into the lead overall.

:22:57.:22:59.

And that is a Captain Charisma performance, in the second place

:23:00.:23:04.

overall after two events at a great start to the day. A really good

:23:05.:23:07.

start. It is about keeping that positive mental frame. He is in good

:23:08.:23:13.

form and contrast his body, but just go through the motions but really

:23:14.:23:17.

trying to get the maximum out of himself. And second so far is really

:23:18.:23:22.

good. We will be leaving BBC Two in about eight minutes and going onto

:23:23.:23:25.

the red Button, with qualifying for the men's high jump and women's long

:23:26.:23:31.

jump amongst other things. Jazmin Sawyers going in the long jump

:23:32.:23:42.

qualification along with Lorraine Ugen. She's very much in amongst it

:23:43.:23:48.

in Belgrade. Really looking forward to seeing you compete, Jazmin. Do

:23:49.:23:53.

you love it as much as it appears? I really do, competing is my favourite

:23:54.:23:57.

thing to do. Training is great but it is not competing at

:23:58.:24:03.

Championships, that is what I'm here for. I love to compete. When I get

:24:04.:24:09.

out in the full stadium and you have expectation, people watching, I love

:24:10.:24:13.

it. I feel it is the performance and I can have fun with it. It is a

:24:14.:24:17.

chance finally to show how the training has been going and show

:24:18.:24:21.

everyone what we have been working on. You absolutely thrive when

:24:22.:24:24.

pressure is on, when the spotlight is on. Where did it come from? I

:24:25.:24:34.

think my love for competing under pressure probably comes from

:24:35.:24:38.

performing on stage as a kid and kind of having that spotlight on.

:24:39.:24:42.

And going right now you need to perform and put together everything

:24:43.:24:46.

you have worked for, remember all your lines. I think that is

:24:47.:24:50.

transferred over. Either that or I am just that kind of person, but

:24:51.:24:55.

competing on bigger stages with more pressure is where I feel I come

:24:56.:25:03.

alive. Ivana Spanovic is coming in as a Brit of course and her posters

:25:04.:25:08.

are everywhere. Her face is everywhere, you cannot get away from

:25:09.:25:12.

her in Belgrade! How do you feel thing that? It is nice, she's a

:25:13.:25:16.

friend, and one of the friendliest people on the circuit. Seeing how

:25:17.:25:19.

popular she's here it is nice to see that nice to see there is a place

:25:20.:25:24.

that celebrates long jump so much and is so excited by that. It is

:25:25.:25:28.

hard for the country not to get excited about that with someone so

:25:29.:25:34.

famous. So when I see Ivana Spanovic everywhere I think this is going to

:25:35.:25:38.

be a great competition because everyone is looking forward to it.

:25:39.:25:43.

So she is a friend, but you want to win? Of course. A lot of girls in

:25:44.:25:46.

the competition are friends but it does not mean you do not want to

:25:47.:25:53.

beat them. The friendship is there but competition is more important. I

:25:54.:25:55.

come to every championship, to win. I do not think you should set your

:25:56.:25:59.

sights any lower. I want a personal best and I would like to think I

:26:00.:26:07.

could really push it. We will see. Bobsleigh competitor, singer, long

:26:08.:26:13.

jumper, a really talented woman. Welcome to Steve Cram. It is a rich

:26:14.:26:23.

time for British women past night long jumping. It is a good time, and

:26:24.:26:36.

it is tough to get into the team. That I think generates about high

:26:37.:26:39.

level of performance. It will be interesting, it is a bouncy runway

:26:40.:26:44.

and they helped athletes struggled in the first round. But also that

:26:45.:26:49.

three metre which changes the most visually as you are running in.

:26:50.:26:53.

Basanta bit further away than it normally is. They need to get used

:26:54.:26:59.

to that and then it should be fine. And also pushing for the medals will

:27:00.:27:06.

be Lorraine Ugen. I think she overly said she sometimes things she does

:27:07.:27:09.

not get the attention but she deserves. She is a very good,

:27:10.:27:14.

world-class long jumper. Jazmin gets all the attention because of the

:27:15.:27:19.

other things that she is doing. Shara Proctor is a different

:27:20.:27:23.

character again. But I think Lorraine has a good chance. Ivana

:27:24.:27:29.

Spanovic is the one to beat. It will be a cracking atmosphere on Sunday

:27:30.:27:32.

with their local hero, Ivana Spanovic. Let's talk about Laura

:27:33.:27:37.

Muir, we are coming up to a really brilliant afternoon of athletics.

:27:38.:27:43.

Ten gold medals up for grabs. She is going to win. That will be one to

:27:44.:27:48.

watch. Going to win. That is the build-up to that Don! Laura is in

:27:49.:27:53.

the shape of her life. There is some decent people in there but she will

:27:54.:27:58.

win. I do not know what else you want me to say! Well be there at

:27:59.:28:09.

6:45pm. A really exciting race to watch. Absolutely. Nielsen is gutsy

:28:10.:28:19.

and she will be prepared to take it on. She's got to be brave and bold.

:28:20.:28:24.

Thank you very much. We are going onto the Red Button. Steve Cram is

:28:25.:28:30.

going to get a copy for everyone! The athletes preparing for the

:28:31.:28:35.

qualifiers, mainly in the jobs. See you shortly on the Red Button.

:28:36.:28:49.

# Jump! Great to see Robbie Grabarz back in

:28:50.:28:57.

action. Absolutely superb performance for

:28:58.:28:58.

Ivana Spanovic. Oh, the dragon.

:28:59.:29:00.

Dylan Thomas. Richard Burton.

:29:01.:29:02.

Barry Island.
