Hello and welcome to the World Indoor Athletics Championships from

:00:46.:01:05.

Portland, Oregon. After the controversies of the past few

:01:06.:01:08.

months, the athletes will have their say. Lots of great action in store

:01:09.:01:14.

in the specially built track. It has been converted to a 7000 seat

:01:15.:01:22.

capacity indoor arena. Hopefully the striking track will cut to

:01:23.:01:27.

everyone's attention. Hopefully some medals for Great Britain. One medal

:01:28.:01:32.

hope in the first event we will see, the 60 metre hurdles. We will be

:01:33.:01:38.

giving you a timetable for the remainder of the evening very

:01:39.:01:42.

shortly. So far, the crowds have been excellent. They have plenty to

:01:43.:01:54.

cheer about. Alina Talay is certainly a medal contender. Tiffany

:01:55.:02:13.

Porter is in it as well. Rhianna -- Brianna Rollins is number one in the

:02:14.:02:17.

world, a number of women will be hoping to place in this event.

:02:18.:02:23.

Solomon has to get in the top two if she is to make it through. The two

:02:24.:02:30.

fastest from the three races will make the finals. Watch out for Alina

:02:31.:02:41.

Talay closest to camera. Alina Talay has some work to do, Solomon is

:02:42.:02:53.

right in it. Brianna Rollins as expected got away well, such good

:02:54.:03:03.

form. Didn't have to be as quick as she usually is. Welcome and good

:03:04.:03:19.

evening to 20 minute -- Tony Minicello. I think if you can get a

:03:20.:03:26.

low eight seconds, it might be good enough to make the final. Sometimes

:03:27.:03:34.

you come out to the first event of the evening, the atmosphere has been

:03:35.:03:41.

good here. Certainly this event has been of very high quality this

:03:42.:03:42.

year. I think Rollins is certainly capable

:03:43.:04:13.

of the gold-medal. Two Ukrainians here tonight. This is the

:04:14.:04:18.

penultimate event of the Penthouse Forum for the women. -- the

:04:19.:04:47.

pentathlon for women. Morgan Lake, the junior champion of the high

:04:48.:04:53.

jump. The first jump was over six metres. The best so far this year.

:04:54.:05:04.

We have seen a similar reaction to everything she has done today. This

:05:05.:05:19.

man's event is being dominated by the American -- men's.

:05:20.:05:30.

Confirmation of the result of the first of the heats of the 60 metre

:05:31.:05:49.

hurdles. It is run from Solomon, she has to hope that is quick enough --

:05:50.:05:56.

a decent run. Quite a busy start already. Lots more to come.

:05:57.:06:28.

Lots to look forward to. Now we can move on to seeing Tiffany Porter in

:06:29.:06:42.

action in the second heat. We also have the surprise world champion of

:06:43.:06:50.

last year, it Danny Williams -- Danielle Williams. America will have

:06:51.:07:08.

three contestants in this important event.

:07:09.:07:26.

It look like it could have been a great outdoor season for her, but it

:07:27.:07:35.

did not really materialise. We have seen Rollins qualify, this track

:07:36.:07:46.

seems to be pretty quick. It is not putting the athletes off. No room

:07:47.:08:00.

for error. 60 hurdles. Try and be clean over the hurdles. Tiffany

:08:01.:08:02.

Porter should be able to go through. Tiffany Porter had a very bad start.

:08:03.:08:24.

Williams has gone out, the world champion has gone out. A bit of a

:08:25.:08:36.

ropey start, I said Daniel Williams might struggle -- Danielle. I think

:08:37.:08:49.

Tiffany Porter put her arm up to the air and went vertical straight away.

:08:50.:09:05.

Williams had some problems, too. I think she would have expected to be

:09:06.:09:11.

a Jamaican, but she would have been panicking a bit more. -- eat the

:09:12.:09:31.

Jamaican. A good day for her so far, in third place.

:09:32.:09:42.

6.37 in the first round. 6.42 is the season's best. She is still in third

:09:43.:10:05.

place might be -- third place behind the two Ukrainians. This is her

:10:06.:10:14.

husband. He has not had a great shot put so far. 13.39 in the second

:10:15.:10:41.

round. A bit of pressure here. He will expect to go over 14 metres if

:10:42.:10:47.

he gets it right. That is probably closer to 15 done 14. Just what he

:10:48.:11:02.

would have wanted at this stage. -- than. He also had a huge long jump,

:11:03.:11:16.

even by his own high standards. Kendal Williams, had a pretty solid

:11:17.:11:41.

days -- Kendell. Jessica Ennis Hill is out. We do have Morgan Lake. Look

:11:42.:11:55.

at that, way behind the board. No improvement for her. The Hungarian

:11:56.:12:10.

had a marginal foul in the second attempt. Her third and final jump in

:12:11.:12:35.

the pentathlon. The longest jump we have seen so far has been from the

:12:36.:12:37.

Ukrainian. I can tell you at the minute that

:12:38.:13:06.

things are looking good for Solomon in the women's 60 metre hurdles. She

:13:07.:13:11.

is the fastest of the fastest losers in the only two spots them

:13:12.:13:15.

available. Not looking too bad for her. Next her we have the Canadian

:13:16.:13:28.

representative. Still going very, very quick. Has produced a season's

:13:29.:13:42.

best in her heyday. When after the American Championships and got it by

:13:43.:14:01.

Rollins. That event last year was decimated with people doing false

:14:02.:14:05.

starts and not getting through the rounds they were expected to. But

:14:06.:14:13.

here in doors, Olympic year. A great opportunity for Harrison. And again

:14:14.:14:21.

just watch the Times because despite such a good start in the previous

:14:22.:14:25.

semifinals, Solomon ran well in the first one. Let's hope we can get two

:14:26.:14:38.

into the final. Another cracking start from Harrison away and look at

:14:39.:14:43.

this. Just putting a bit of a gap between herself and others. 7.8,

:14:44.:14:49.

matching her teammate. Her teammate Rollins. Just watching, we will wait

:14:50.:14:59.

for the results to come through, but it may well be that the placed

:15:00.:15:05.

athlete, I don't think anyone will race quicker than Solomon. Then this

:15:06.:15:15.

track from last week, I think. The time in between the hurdles will be

:15:16.:15:21.

a bit quicker. If you look at them, they are running exceptionally well.

:15:22.:15:24.

This is an event that women are getting so much better at. We have

:15:25.:15:32.

not got Sally Pearson here, wait for her to come back to full fitness.

:15:33.:15:38.

You are right when you look at it. The competitiveness of the event,

:15:39.:15:46.

both in and outdoors. Last year was a surprise podium. It didn't have

:15:47.:15:51.

many of the top names getting through for the medals. That

:15:52.:15:54.

certainly here, the Americans might be hoping for the one, the Americans

:15:55.:15:57.

might be hoping for the one, two, three. Confirmation of that. The new

:15:58.:16:05.

international record for the Croatian. Not sure that all be good

:16:06.:16:10.

enough for her to go through. It might well be a tight, we'll see who

:16:11.:16:13.

goes through the two fastest losers. Certainly Solomon will be

:16:14.:16:47.

one of them. You do your training on your normal track, slip at home and

:16:48.:16:51.

head down the road. There are the standings during the shot put in the

:16:52.:17:02.

Hat South London -- epitaph on -- heptathlon. Might have just lost his

:17:03.:17:09.

chance among the medals on home soil. No bricks involved in that

:17:10.:17:16.

event that will conclude to borrow a group -- tomorrow evening. She

:17:17.:17:54.

missed out unfortunately. The 6.03 has made a difference. Previously,

:17:55.:18:01.

she would jump 5.89. ), great written's Morgan Lake. -- ), -- all

:18:02.:18:12.

right then, Great Britain's Morgan Lake. It feels like and nearly day,

:18:13.:18:19.

if I can call it that. 8.7 she started her day. Good lift on that,

:18:20.:18:27.

decent leg shoot. Maybe get Tony to give his technical analysis of that.

:18:28.:18:34.

What do you make of that long jump? Really slowed down and the broad --

:18:35.:18:41.

into the board. Think of breaking and the speed and what you see as a

:18:42.:18:46.

result of that is why she popped up in the air. No improvement for

:18:47.:18:53.

Morgan Lake. The Ukrainian even leader with a huge effort, that

:18:54.:18:59.

6.66, a lifetime best, what a time to do it. Might she be on her way to

:19:00.:19:05.

taking her first ever global title? Just 25 years of age. Has really

:19:06.:19:13.

attacked this pentathlon. She made great grounds in the shot put.

:19:14.:19:17.

He/she goes, last round. Another good effort. Smack in between the

:19:18.:19:24.

six on the seven metre marks. You can see behind her there. We will

:19:25.:19:27.

wait for that to be measured. -- smack bang in between. A few of the

:19:28.:19:35.

athletes are already out hitting ready for the semi-final of the

:19:36.:19:40.

men's 60 metres. What a mouthwatering prospect we have in

:19:41.:19:52.

the races coming up. Watch out for the former world youth champion from

:19:53.:19:56.

Japan who ran very well in qualification. Rana from Barbados as

:19:57.:20:05.

well. The competitive field with no room for error here. First two in

:20:06.:20:08.

each of these semifinals and the two fastest losers to go through to the

:20:09.:20:15.

semi-final. And one Adams from Saint Kitts and Nevis. -- Antoine. He is

:20:16.:20:28.

27 years of age and has set a new personal best. He has had quite a

:20:29.:20:33.

few races in door already this year, coming at the top form at the right

:20:34.:20:37.

time. Haven't seen too much of him, really. 22 years of age. Huge

:20:38.:20:45.

opportunity for him. He seems to have been around for ages now. Very

:20:46.:20:50.

close to his personal best in qualification. Got off to a really

:20:51.:21:00.

good start, if you does that again and he will do well. Had a great

:21:01.:21:06.

World Championships last year, the American, won the bronze outdoors.

:21:07.:21:17.

He has looked pretty Gerd so far in Dawson says he is getting back to

:21:18.:21:22.

his best. This man ran a personal best in qualification, still just 20

:21:23.:21:26.

years of age. Great Japanese talent. Next to him the race from Trinidad

:21:27.:21:36.

Tobago. And outside him will be our man from the Ivory Coast. Lots to

:21:37.:21:50.

come. The 60 metre final will be the last event tonight if you can hang

:21:51.:21:57.

with us for long. Will James be able to deal with the challenge of the

:21:58.:22:07.

American alongside him. And Kiryu, this great Japanese talent on the

:22:08.:22:13.

right of James. Just a top two to go through.

:22:14.:22:19.

Needs a really good start. Oh, James, is that a false start? Well

:22:20.:22:35.

known to British viewers. That looked pretty clear to me. Watch

:22:36.:22:47.

this, Tony. I don't think so. There is a new start rule now, this idea

:22:48.:22:51.

that you can twitch on the set of vision but if you come back to still

:22:52.:22:56.

before the gun, then it can be seen as just a warning. I had this

:22:57.:23:01.

explained to me at the British trials, where the British athlete

:23:02.:23:09.

who would have been here to defend his title was disqualified and

:23:10.:23:15.

didn't make the British team and now, James, his World Championship

:23:16.:23:18.

hopes disappear in a split second. A false start and he knows what an

:23:19.:23:26.

opportunity goes down the drain there for him. He came do these

:23:27.:23:30.

World Championships to set up his Olympic year, hoping in a real

:23:31.:23:37.

positive manner and it has ended in failure. He is out, it is pretty

:23:38.:23:46.

clear. I said he had to get a good start, he is always aware of that.

:23:47.:23:51.

And there is that forward movement as the gun goes. If he held himself

:23:52.:23:58.

a split-2nd before him I have been all right but he is gone. The

:23:59.:24:09.

American way it nice and clean. Kiryu run out of it. What are run by

:24:10.:24:15.

the man from Barbados. He gets the second spotlight the American and

:24:16.:24:18.

Kiryu will have to try and wait and see what sort of time he gets

:24:19.:24:22.

given. But would the talent to come in the next two semifinals, it might

:24:23.:24:26.

not be quick enough. You can almost see a little twitch from the

:24:27.:24:36.

American. The young Japanese athlete, a cooking himself very well

:24:37.:24:44.

-- equipping. Just behind the other two. Drama in the first heat, not

:24:45.:24:52.

the sort of drama the British fans would have hoped for. His coach will

:24:53.:25:01.

be annoyed. As any coach would be. It was a photo finish. Let's have

:25:02.:25:05.

another look at this, just to reiterate that point. He was on the

:25:06.:25:09.

way, you could see him trying to hold his cell back that it was too

:25:10.:25:15.

late. -- himself. He didn't have time to come back and settle. The

:25:16.:25:21.

blocks, they have this measurement device on it that it can see it

:25:22.:25:25.

gives them a trace. A bit like a heart trace and therefore they can

:25:26.:25:31.

see when the person is moving. The Canadian in the last round of the

:25:32.:25:35.

long jump. Looking to wrestle back into the lead that she held earlier

:25:36.:25:43.

today. She watched her husband romped to what looks like a certain

:25:44.:25:49.

victory in the men's version of the multi- events. Look at that, a big

:25:50.:25:56.

foul for her. She is a silver-medallist in the indoors and

:25:57.:26:02.

out. The Ukrainian looks like quite a handful. That is the confirmation

:26:03.:26:05.

of the men's version of the multi- events. Ashton eaten way out in

:26:06.:26:20.

front. -- Eaton. It is the American, Ashton Eaton a class above the rest.

:26:21.:26:44.

That is a national record for Gittens. Watch out for the ratio

:26:45.:27:06.

from -- racer from China. The Spanish athlete was not too sluggish

:27:07.:27:16.

either. Another to have run a new personal best this year, although he

:27:17.:27:20.

was a fair way off that in qualification. This track seems to

:27:21.:27:23.

be pretty quick, a lot of personal bests and a few national records

:27:24.:27:37.

kicking around already. Kemar from the Cayman Islands. Figures in

:27:38.:27:41.

three. -- he goes. 6.47 last year and 6.51 this year,

:27:42.:28:15.

he is pretty quick. Personal best to make it through to this stage.

:28:16.:28:25.

Impressed with the Chinese athletes, this guy is just 22 years of age.

:28:26.:28:34.

And from Zimbabwe, the former African junior champion. Kim Collins

:28:35.:28:48.

never seems to be getting any slower, not losing any enthusiasm.

:28:49.:28:53.

Collins has been pretty good out off the blocks this winter. If you are

:28:54.:29:03.

watching in Glasgow, you might remember that he pulled a hamstring.

:29:04.:29:11.

He has obviously recovered well, he is quite sharp this morning. The top

:29:12.:29:28.

two will qualify for the final. Collins is coming through, takes it

:29:29.:29:39.

from Rogers. 6.49. That is very close to his personal best. We had a

:29:40.:29:47.

6-point fall for this morning, that was in the top times. Collins has

:29:48.:30:11.

got a lovely action, he never changes it. Rogers glancing across,

:30:12.:30:24.

it was not a glance of, oh, I'm letting you win this. Even running

:30:25.:30:32.

at 6.49, he seems to be running within himself, it looks so smooth.

:30:33.:30:42.

Here are the standings after four of them is of the pentathlon.

:30:43.:30:51.

It looks like Ukraine versus kind of all the top spot. Just the 800

:30:52.:31:07.

metres to come -- Ukraine versus Canada. Five events in one day, it's

:31:08.:31:22.

a tough day, isn't it? Tiredness comes into it. They might have had a

:31:23.:31:40.

little bit of a break now, maybe about an hour. They should have

:31:41.:31:46.

about 45 minutes to warm up for the long jump. Just confirming the

:31:47.:32:19.

result. He needed to get a good start, he has been in good form. I

:32:20.:32:23.

think even with an average start, he might have done just as well. He

:32:24.:32:32.

knew what he had done. There was no coming back from that. Our best

:32:33.:32:45.

chance of a medal in the 60 metres, not able to get one because of the

:32:46.:32:57.

false start. Of the keen or too nervous? -- over? For whatever

:32:58.:33:08.

reason, he seems to slip off the back block a little bit. He hasn't

:33:09.:33:13.

got enough time to resettle himself. There are a bit of nerves, but it

:33:14.:33:18.

looks as though he slips of that back foot. You will probably see it

:33:19.:33:30.

from the front view. If he was doing that... He is trying to settle and

:33:31.:33:56.

sell. -- settle himself. A bit more reflects like a rubber band to try

:33:57.:34:02.

and get off the blocks even faster. This is the start list for the third

:34:03.:34:29.

semi-final. There's Andy Robertson. A good start this morning, he will

:34:30.:34:35.

have to finish off well if he can maintain it. It is a very difficult

:34:36.:34:46.

semi-final. 6-point for in qualification, didn't even get a

:34:47.:34:52.

great start. When he flows, there is nobody better. Nobody flows as well

:34:53.:35:16.

as Powell does. He received a personal best this year, 6.58. Andy

:35:17.:35:31.

Robertson will have to run the race of his life here if he is going to

:35:32.:35:45.

make it through. Robertson could run something like that, he could give

:35:46.:36:08.

himself time to go through. A clean start. Powell gets off to a good

:36:09.:36:20.

start. 6.43 this time! Getting quicker. He makes it look so easy.

:36:21.:36:36.

Martin Bracey never really got going, he could not react to the

:36:37.:36:42.

speed of Powell. Going backwards there. Trying to come back, but not

:36:43.:36:55.

catching Su. Look how relaxed Powell looks. He does flows. Is confident,

:36:56.:37:06.

he has his head in the right position. Hitting the positions

:37:07.:37:11.

properly. He maintains the frequency of his stride. Not only is his

:37:12.:37:16.

stride getting longer, he is still hitting the ground so quickly. Two

:37:17.:37:30.

scintillating performances from Powell. 6-point for in the

:37:31.:37:51.

semi-final. Brilliant performance. I think Martin Bracey will go through

:37:52.:37:58.

as the fastest loser, not a good performance from him. Kim Collins

:37:59.:38:02.

might be the only one to challenge Powell. He was the only one who

:38:03.:38:09.

looked as relaxed. It will be interesting if someone can put

:38:10.:38:12.

Powell under pressure. That will affect him. We've seen how he

:38:13.:38:17.

doesn't quite get into the transition, doesn't get that flow.

:38:18.:38:22.

If you could put him under pressure, and do it early, that is the best.

:38:23.:38:44.

Su setting a new Asian indoor record, -- Marvin Bracy. He may well

:38:45.:38:51.

go through as the fastest loser. Powell, I always go back to Osaka in

:38:52.:38:56.

1997. He's never won a world title or a global title, outdoors or

:38:57.:39:01.

indoors. When he is not under pressure, you make a very valid

:39:02.:39:05.

point that it looks fantastic. When he is under pressure, he just

:39:06.:39:13.

tightens up. He is now saying, I am as good as I've ever been. He may

:39:14.:39:18.

well be right after what we've seen today. It's whether he's got the

:39:19.:39:23.

confidence and that self assurance to take care of business. There

:39:24.:39:34.

wasn't much self from James Dasaolu. The starting technique that

:39:35.:39:45.

you are pointing out, he obviously hasn't started doing this now. He

:39:46.:39:50.

has been working on this. But you get to a point where you think, OK,

:39:51.:40:03.

the semi-final is not a time for risk-taking. I think he's got to be

:40:04.:40:11.

confident in himself, and he has to understand that he is one of the

:40:12.:40:15.

fastest people in this heat. If he can do stride out, hit his positions

:40:16.:40:19.

and flow-through, it can be confident of finishing in the top

:40:20.:40:20.

two. Here are the qualifiers. They will

:40:21.:40:55.

be led by Asafa Powell. The women's 60 metre hurdles was tight.

:40:56.:41:17.

Tiffany Porter will need to start better than she did in the first

:41:18.:41:32.

race. Angela White took a little while to sort it out. Another chance

:41:33.:41:57.

to have a look at Morgan Lake in the long jump. Her first-round jump.

:41:58.:42:17.

6.03. That keeps the potential of a world indoor junior record alive.

:42:18.:42:32.

Tony, you did some maths. 2.18 is the best? It's been a really good

:42:33.:42:37.

day for Morgan Lake, you just sense there is more there. The backdrops

:42:38.:42:44.

and is a little bit, reduces her speed into the final. If she doesn't

get across and take it into the pit, she drives out well. A good upright

:42:52.:42:57.

position. Watch the head, leans back that little bit before the board. It

:42:58.:43:01.

is normal, you think it will give you a bit more height. It is very

:43:02.:43:06.

instinctive. But it just takes the speed of a little bit. That stops

:43:07.:43:13.

are getting across-the-board. She was a junior last year, she is on

:43:14.:43:23.

the verge. If she can run 2.17, she is a very young girl stopped that

:43:24.:43:26.

would be incredible. He lives in Portland. Obviously

:43:27.:43:46.

popping down to watch an event coming up shortly. He is going to

:43:47.:43:52.

swap seats with Paul Radcliffe. -- Paula Radcliffe. You can see the

:43:53.:44:03.

event he will take place in in Cardiff again live on the BBC. He

:44:04.:44:13.

has only had one indoor race that Tom Lucas year which was in Glasgow.

:44:14.:44:19.

His preparations for Rio for him, he wanted to have a good last out on

:44:20.:44:24.

the roads next week and Paula Radcliffe is now joined me. -- has

:44:25.:44:36.

now. It will be a tough race but I think it is one that he has spent a

:44:37.:44:41.

lot of time getting prepared for. Really working towards this winter

:44:42.:44:45.

and he wants to go out and try and run fast as well is trying to win in

:44:46.:44:48.

Cardiff will stop if you want to come and take part, there is a mass

:44:49.:44:59.

race there has well. You get a chance to run on the same course as

:45:00.:45:05.

the athletes. That is next week and as I said the 1500 metre heats, I

:45:06.:45:10.

should have said a bigger welcome to Paula, she has been sitting

:45:11.:45:16.

patiently waiting to get started. These are two cracking heats and two

:45:17.:45:22.

tough races, really. Britain represented. Charlie, he has been

:45:23.:45:31.

training with Mo Farah in Ethiopia from January into February. They

:45:32.:45:37.

will both have the run really, really well to make it through in

:45:38.:45:40.

one of the highest quality events at these World Championships. Despite

:45:41.:45:48.

the quality being high, there is only 15 entrants. Seven in this

:45:49.:45:53.

race, hate in the next one. The seven men the lineup in the first

:45:54.:45:54.

the two racers... -- eight. Of the two races, I would say this

:45:55.:46:18.

one is probably the slightly easier one. But I suppose, they are only

:46:19.:46:23.

getting rid of six people. The quality is high but they are only

:46:24.:46:27.

getting rid of six people. They could have just gone around the back

:46:28.:46:30.

and had a quick run around the car park and sorted it out then. In this

:46:31.:46:43.

kind of event, you really have to run your heat as if it is the final

:46:44.:46:47.

and just judge it and not by looking around until the last lap. The

:46:48.:47:01.

British racer will be trying to get as much information as he can about

:47:02.:47:04.

this first heat so he knows her to give himself the best chance of

:47:05.:47:09.

coming through as a fastest loser as they should arise. He had a bit of a

:47:10.:47:16.

tough time winning the US championships here last weekend. The

:47:17.:47:20.

only just held off Robbie and Roos who will be going in the next heat.

:47:21.:47:25.

Charlie Grice had a bit of a tough time at the British Championships as

:47:26.:47:32.

well. He has been training well, preparing for these World

:47:33.:47:40.

Championships. He is going to have his work cut out. I am pretty sure

:47:41.:48:01.

that Charlie will be OK. The canyon is certainly someone you wouldn't

:48:02.:48:08.

fear too much. -- Kenyan. I think if I were Charlie, his coach might well

:48:09.:48:13.

have said just follow the American. Whatever he does, you will be pretty

:48:14.:48:19.

close, certainly if you are there were two or three laps to go you

:48:20.:48:24.

will be in a good spot. He has proven time and time again that,

:48:25.:48:29.

championship, he can really time to perfection and run really well but I

:48:30.:48:32.

think this year especially he is a lot further on in the indoor season

:48:33.:48:36.

and he has been in previous years and seems to be racing very, very

:48:37.:48:41.

well. He is an extremely good shape and is going to tactically run

:48:42.:48:47.

really well. Charlie has cut himself in a good position. Monitor but stay

:48:48.:48:56.

out of the bumping and barging. The danger always is that you are in a

:48:57.:49:00.

small field, people have been invited to these World Championships

:49:01.:49:04.

so there is a mixture of high quality. These guys wouldn't be here

:49:05.:49:10.

as they couldn't finish fast. They have won the national championships

:49:11.:49:20.

or run a qualifying time all but the -- or both. As I said, I think

:49:21.:49:31.

Charlie can kick the Kenyan. He is taking some initiative as he moves

:49:32.:49:38.

up. The Spaniard has gone, so that makes Charlie's your little easier.

:49:39.:49:43.

He still leads to concentrate on the task at hand and the good thing for

:49:44.:49:47.

him is that given the chance to go away with Mo Farah and get that

:49:48.:49:51.

extra dangerous and strengthen them will have done his confidence a lot

:49:52.:49:54.

of good but also mean that his insurance is strong and can give

:49:55.:50:00.

them different ways of running the race and maybe taking it on earlier.

:50:01.:50:09.

200 metre laps indoors. It is slow throughout first 800. That won't

:50:10.:50:14.

bother the American is up on the outside. Charlie got pushed into the

:50:15.:50:20.

hole and got his elbows out that got himself out of the box. A bitter

:50:21.:50:24.

rough-and-tumble as you often get indoors. The American finds himself

:50:25.:50:32.

at the back again after all of that. Charlie Grice did a lot to get

:50:33.:50:37.

himself out of trouble but didn't do the American any favours. Two laps

:50:38.:50:47.

to go. The American lurking right on the outside. He will be superfast

:50:48.:50:52.

into the last 300 metres and Charlie has good to stay on top of this

:50:53.:50:59.

year. The Ethiopian trying to hold off the American who looks

:51:00.:51:02.

comfortable. Charlie has some work to do on this last lap. They are all

:51:03.:51:07.

still there. Every single one of them has a chance. Just the top

:51:08.:51:13.

three don't forget to go through. Looks like he is tying up a little

:51:14.:51:17.

bit and I don't think he has much left to give now. Charlie Grice is

:51:18.:51:25.

having a real struggle here. At the front, the American. Pulling well

:51:26.:51:31.

clear of the others. It will be a good finish, the American will hold

:51:32.:51:38.

on for the win has expected. I think that is going to be a very

:51:39.:51:41.

disappointed Charlie Grice, because he couldn't even get the fourth

:51:42.:51:53.

spot. I didn't think he looked great in the trials. May be that food

:51:54.:52:23.

poisoning or whatever he picked up overseas took a little too much out

:52:24.:52:27.

of his system. That is not a true reflection of the talent that

:52:28.:52:30.

Charlie Grice has but he will be able to go away from me and build on

:52:31.:52:33.

it and hopefully come back much better ready for the summer. Big

:52:34.:52:39.

year ahead, it will be tough to make the British team. At the centre of

:52:40.:52:46.

it, the American knows what is like to global metals indoors and

:52:47.:53:03.

outdoors. He ran a good session of four times 800 metres. They all

:53:04.:53:19.

qualified very comfortably. Charlie Grice, he can only cross his fingers

:53:20.:53:23.

and hope that for some reason in the second semi-final they crawl around

:53:24.:53:28.

but that doesn't look good enough to make the final. It is a massive

:53:29.:53:48.

convention centre that is just a blank space. Watching the indoor

:53:49.:53:55.

warmup area, everything has had to be created for the specially if you

:53:56.:54:00.

like. Kim: is just trying to relax as his agent walks with him. --: is

:54:01.:54:27.

-- Collins. He has not managed to convert. There is the man from

:54:28.:54:36.

Barbados. There has been some surprises. Particularly the Chinese

:54:37.:54:41.

sprinters for me. The young Japanese athlete as well. Asian sprinting

:54:42.:54:50.

going through indeed. Obviously the Olympics are such an important year

:54:51.:55:00.

has ever. -- has ever -- has ever -- as ever.

:55:01.:55:08.

For many athletes, indoors does not figure at all. Once I got pulled in

:55:09.:55:19.

to run the Birmingham indoors because someone was attempting the

:55:20.:55:23.

world record in the 5000 metres and they needed a enough people to be on

:55:24.:55:26.

the start line for the qualifiers a world record. It drafted for a quick

:55:27.:55:35.

speed trial indoors. The second semi-final. Nick Willis of New

:55:36.:55:48.

Zealand, one of the big names. All taking on Chris O'Hare of great

:55:49.:56:05.

Great Britain. Chris O'Hare knows that the season he has had sofa, and

:56:06.:56:16.

has been a great season. Based in America, the Spanish sprinter. He

:56:17.:56:32.

has watched this race from Djibouti this year. What about Willis finally

:56:33.:56:41.

in up, after watching the American trials on television he said, was in

:56:42.:56:46.

Robbie Andrews good? I hope he isn't in my heat in the world

:56:47.:56:49.

championships. He is, standing right next to them. That was Robbie

:56:50.:56:54.

Andrews. The reason he is worried about him is that he is a very quick

:56:55.:57:02.

finish. Again, the Kenyan is not sending their best 1500 metre

:57:03.:57:21.

runners here. Chris O'Hare and those that top three definitely go through

:57:22.:57:24.

but all of these men know that the first heat was not particularly fast

:57:25.:57:29.

and if they just run a fairly steady pace and pick it up through the last

:57:30.:57:34.

406 men could go through from this race. That is what they should know

:57:35.:57:47.

and that is what we hope they know. We will get an idea through the

:57:48.:57:50.

first couple of laps and neither pace they are on. Hopefully they

:57:51.:57:54.

will have ticked up on that because the quality in this field is such

:57:55.:57:57.

that you do need to take advantage of that. You can't just rely on a

:57:58.:58:01.

fast finish because all of these guys can finish fast. Robbie Andrews

:58:02.:58:07.

is a huge danger if you let it go too slow.

:58:08.:58:40.

Setting them up at a good pace. Andrews of the USA in third place.

:58:41.:58:55.

Six of the top seven no bat at this pace they only have to get ahead of

:58:56.:59:06.

one person. -- know that at this pace. Sitting in a good position,

:59:07.:59:16.

you will be able to see who is getting in trouble as it continues.

:59:17.:59:22.

Maybe they will decide to take turns at the front. You hate that it's not

:59:23.:59:29.

all going to lose the work that they've done and people will be

:59:30.:59:47.

reluctant to take first place. You don't win titles if you haven't got

:59:48.:59:52.

some pace. Slowing a little bit here. Taking a wider track and an

:59:53.:00:14.

invitation to go around. The pace picks up again. Was it an invitation

:00:15.:00:20.

or some encouragement from Chris O'Hare to have somebody else go to

:00:21.:00:30.

the front? Andrews gets a little Nougues. Chris O'Hare in a great

:00:31.:01:07.

position -- a little nudge. Chris O'Hare running a very well judged

:01:08.:01:14.

race. Got into a good position, held it well. I think he runs so well in

:01:15.:01:21.

championship races, he knows where to put himself and he has that

:01:22.:01:27.

little bit of speed to be able to ease himself out of any trouble. He

:01:28.:01:32.

does, he has very good tactical decisions. He was frustrated in the

:01:33.:01:42.

summer when he went to Beijing. He got into the training this winter

:01:43.:01:53.

with a bit more fire. He controlled the race well. Chris O'Hare

:01:54.:02:01.

definitely has the tougher heat of the two. He would as though he

:02:02.:02:07.

belonged in one of the first three qualifying spots rather than just

:02:08.:02:16.

scraping through. None of the man who got through, I think that they

:02:17.:02:28.

knew they just had to get ahead -- men. A mouthwatering final, some

:02:29.:02:52.

amazing finalist. Confirmation of the winning time.

:02:53.:03:19.

What do you reckon? Has anything surprised you? I think Chris O'Hare

:03:20.:03:52.

will be surprised that he finished ahead of Andrews, he knows he can go

:03:53.:03:56.

away and raster to recover as quickly as possible for the final.

:03:57.:04:26.

Qualifiers for the 1500 metre final. No fastest losers from the first

:04:27.:04:32.

event, so sadly, Charlie Grace misses out on the final. This is

:04:33.:04:45.

actually the second day of these championships. Quite a few new

:04:46.:05:00.

innovations here. No medal ceremonies here at it in the venue.

:05:01.:05:12.

The whole arena was given over to the pole vault. All eyes were on the

:05:13.:05:21.

Olympic champion. However, the expectant fans would have to wait to

:05:22.:05:24.

see him in action as he sat out of several early rounds. 5.75 at the

:05:25.:05:35.

first attempt. The big surprise was Shaughnessy Barber. He only had one

:05:36.:05:46.

chance at this, but it wasn't to be this evening. The first problem on

:05:47.:06:05.

the otherwise flawless CV of Shawn Barber. Sam Hendrix was left to put

:06:06.:06:20.

the pressure on. He has the confidence and belief. Now, the

:06:21.:06:30.

Frenchman wants to underline his status as the world's number-1

:06:31.:06:38.

falter. A huge sense of expectation. Oh yes! Oh my goodness! -- vaulter.

:06:39.:06:54.

Kendricks claimed a commendable silver. The Frenchman continued to

:06:55.:07:06.

push himself to the limit. Oh yes! Retaining the world indoor title,

:07:07.:07:13.

and it's a championship record. He is in a class of his own. He raised

:07:14.:07:21.

the bar again to a potential 6.17 metres. No! Has he hurt himself?

:07:22.:07:39.

He's OK! It's good to try to jump really high. My first goal was to

:07:40.:07:48.

get the six metre jump, to secure the championship record means a

:07:49.:07:55.

lot. For the first time ever in a women's pole vaulting competition,

:07:56.:08:08.

for competitors cleared 4.80 metres -- four competitors. This successful

:08:09.:08:17.

clearance saw her go on to win bronze. The US pair battled it out

:08:18.:08:30.

for the title. Can she get over 4.85? Yes! But could the US go one

:08:31.:08:45.

better free championship record of 4.9? Called for the American, but

:08:46.:08:53.

there wasn't to be another record attempt. To win on home soil means a

:08:54.:09:01.

lot. To win it, I think it's a good builder for outdoor.

:09:02.:09:12.

A good start to the women's championships for the USA. We saw

:09:13.:09:29.

the Frenchman with a world record of six point 03. -- 6.03. He will be

:09:30.:09:47.

looking to take the gold in Rio in less than five months time.

:09:48.:09:54.

Everybody seemed to enjoy the pole vault, the whole stadium really

:09:55.:10:04.

liked it. Yes, they did, but they have other events running

:10:05.:10:10.

simultaneously. That is something in itself. It was entertaining and it

:10:11.:10:18.

was high quality. I think that the sport has to try things. You can see

:10:19.:10:31.

the introduction down the far end, you can see some of the shot put.

:10:32.:10:39.

The women are jumping towards the pit, you can see three Brits

:10:40.:10:48.

involved. In Beijing in the relays, there were a few good poses that

:10:49.:10:57.

people had been practised. It would be nice to see them. This was one of

:10:58.:11:06.

the big innovations of these championships, introducing that

:11:07.:11:12.

through the finals and semifinals. The big-name end the shot put... --

:11:13.:11:50.

in the shot put. Jacko Gill, a fantastic young star. Tom Walsh is a

:11:51.:12:06.

brilliant competitor. It is sort of Europe versus the states. The final

:12:07.:12:32.

athlete running across, Kurt Roberts. He might be the favourite

:12:33.:12:37.

and might he be the man who keeps the title with the Americans on home

:12:38.:12:42.

soil? A bit of extra pressure for him. The second best in the world, a

:12:43.:12:51.

big man. 1.91 metres, 127 kilos. The men's shotput final. It is the

:12:52.:13:24.

man from Congo to open the competition. Bang on 19 metres, or

:13:25.:13:33.

just shy of it. Here's a 20 metre plaster. -- plus throw. It was a

:13:34.:13:50.

foul for the opening throw. Are we going to see a bit of shot. You see

:13:51.:13:58.

his personal best and his season best. Both over the 20 metre mark.

:13:59.:14:06.

The big rotator. A massive shout. It is not a massive throw. You have got

:14:07.:14:17.

the time it right. I was talking with you earlier Tony, the rotation

:14:18.:14:23.

versus the glide. You have got to get it right. 18.50. A decent start

:14:24.:14:34.

for the Brazilian who will take the lead. Rotation versus linear,

:14:35.:14:40.

thoughts? It is one of those. I think when you are coaching the

:14:41.:14:46.

multi- events, consistency and performance is what you are after.

:14:47.:14:51.

The glide gives you that, but the rotation can give you more speed.

:14:52.:14:56.

But you have to control that speed. You see the guys here finishing very

:14:57.:15:00.

differently. It is being able to control that speed and catcher and

:15:01.:15:09.

Dravid that little bit higher. Not able to control that speed as you

:15:10.:15:17.

say. More things going on. The pressure is on the nerves are

:15:18.:15:22.

flying. It just is possibly an unwanted extra bit of jeopardy that

:15:23.:15:32.

can creep in. Adam Nelson, World champion in the past, a great

:15:33.:15:38.

exponent of the rotation. As we watch the Argentinian. Possibly the

:15:39.:15:44.

best grow so far. Was it a valid throw? I think it was. Finally we

:15:45.:15:52.

see that throw that puts a marker out as a lead. Something of a 20

:15:53.:15:58.

metres, you would expect. Just shy. I think the thing with the rotation

:15:59.:16:06.

is that these are very big guys and it is only a seven Foot Circle. You

:16:07.:16:11.

have got to rotate and get around. They cover the circle so quickly

:16:12.:16:15.

that it is difficult to stay in if you miss time it. They are big men,

:16:16.:16:22.

two metres tall is pretty typical. He is quick. Another throw, possibly

:16:23.:16:26.

just shy of 20 metres for the 20-year-old Egyptian. Season's

:16:27.:16:48.

best. Well, just shy. Second place so far. The big men yet to throw. It

:16:49.:16:52.

seems like ascending order in terms of your ability. The best growers

:16:53.:16:58.

will go last. In the final round, the top four only what's in the

:16:59.:17:04.

sixth round. Huge shout. Just over 19 metres. 28-year-old German,

:17:05.:17:11.

season's best at 20 point six. So, no one yet been over 20 metres.

:17:12.:17:32.

There are some nerves, some jangling. You have some men who have

:17:33.:17:37.

thrown over 21 metres, we will expect that. It is the heptathlon.

:17:38.:17:55.

Curtis Beach goes clear. His opening height of 1.87. Early days. Just

:17:56.:18:06.

looking to settle into this. Beach considered to be someone who might

:18:07.:18:13.

give Ashton something to think about. Very short of the enormous

:18:14.:18:16.

tally that he is accumulating on this first day. Back to the

:18:17.:18:35.

shotput, the Luxembourg Thrower. Just down that right-hand sector. We

:18:36.:18:44.

saw a wild shot earlier in the heptathlon. A photographer was hit

:18:45.:18:47.

down the left-hand sector from a throw that one wild outside of that

:18:48.:18:50.

cagey conceit protecting it from going out into the arena.

:18:51.:18:55.

Thankfully, no must too badly hurt by the looks of it. There was a

:18:56.:19:00.

little sympathy I felt for him at the time from anyone. He smiled it

:19:01.:19:12.

off and walked away. As we see the Croatian, 21 years of age. Looks

:19:13.:19:19.

pleased with that. But his feet underneath him, crucial when you are

:19:20.:19:23.

rotating to wait for your feet to get down before you drive up. He

:19:24.:19:32.

does like it. Is it me as fastest shotput competition? They are

:19:33.:19:36.

getting them in and out of the circle so quickly. Very little time.

:19:37.:19:41.

I totally agree. The oldest man in the competition takes to the circle.

:19:42.:19:51.

31 years of age. Quick measurements, is that new technology. --

:19:52.:20:03.

technology? This American system that comes from the NCAA, the next

:20:04.:20:09.

two throwers are ready to go. You are on deck and in the hold. As if

:20:10.:20:15.

you are on the deck of a ship and then you are in the circle. They are

:20:16.:20:19.

really getting them moving, which might be interesting later on

:20:20.:20:22.

because if you are rushing these guys through, they do get tired. Big

:20:23.:20:32.

throw for the Romanian. That was under a gag. Big throw from him. The

:20:33.:20:46.

lead so far 20.64 from the Croatian. But a big season's best takes the

:20:47.:20:50.

lead as we get towards the end of the first round. Jonathan Jones then

:20:51.:21:01.

with a season's vest that could threaten. Weigh down on that. 19

:21:02.:21:16.

athletes, a big field, maybe thou rattling them through to get this

:21:17.:21:24.

competition over. Is it also to highlight the last round when only

:21:25.:21:29.

so many are going to get to throw? They are working against the clock

:21:30.:21:38.

to get these rounds through. We watched Jacco Gill, such

:21:39.:21:44.

anticipation of this man coming of age. He is 21 now. Brilliant as a

:21:45.:21:51.

junior. Became the youngest ever world junior champion at the age of

:21:52.:22:01.

15. In the under 20 competition. Looking nervous, I would have to

:22:02.:22:07.

say. Just shrunk in terms of a little bit. Didn't make the most of

:22:08.:22:13.

his big levers. 189 centimetres tall. The top eight after three

:22:14.:22:22.

rounds only will take further part in the competition. That is the

:22:23.:22:26.

importance of these early marks that you have to get into the top eight

:22:27.:22:32.

to remain in the competition. Then only the top four and the final

:22:33.:22:37.

round, the sixth round. That is the innovation we referred to that we

:22:38.:22:40.

will see unfolding not too long if they carry on at this pace will stop

:22:41.:22:59.

the Nigerian. Well, a season's best of 21.11 and he needs all of that.

:23:00.:23:08.

19.84 for the Nigerian. He gets a mark on the board in fourth place so

:23:09.:23:15.

far. Right, Tom Walsh as we get towards the business end. Five left

:23:16.:23:24.

the throw. Possibly the better of the two New Zealand throwers. The

:23:25.:23:35.

surprise medal in Beijing. Throw short 21 metres. Around 20.5 or

:23:36.:23:42.

something like that. It is a decent first Thrower. We flick across to

:23:43.:23:56.

the long jump. No markers in the background there to give us any idea

:23:57.:24:01.

of how far that is but that is the opening jump from the Swedish

:24:02.:24:08.

jumper. Has the honour of starting the final of the women's long jump.

:24:09.:24:24.

Look at that, way behind the board. It is back to the shot. Crikey, what

:24:25.:24:33.

has he hit there? He has set something. I think that hit the

:24:34.:24:38.

upright that holds the netting. That is wild. Thank goodness it was

:24:39.:24:43.

there, could have ended up in the crowd. Field action, thick and fast.

:24:44.:24:54.

Certainly a contender in the heptathlon. Goes clear. Shotput. We

:24:55.:25:04.

are going to flip between these three field events, it would seem as

:25:05.:25:07.

we get towards the end of the first round. The big Canadian.

:25:08.:25:20.

25-year-old, fourth best in 2016. We will wait for that to be measured.

:25:21.:25:26.

By the way, that was a no jump in the first round as we see the

:25:27.:25:32.

Japanese jumper. Already composing herself. It is going to be jumps we

:25:33.:25:42.

expect in the late sixes, possibly in the seven metres plus to get on

:25:43.:25:46.

the roster in this women's long jump final. Well, that must be a foul for

:25:47.:25:56.

sure otherwise is a huge jump. We will come back to that, it looked

:25:57.:26:01.

enormous. Hopefully we will make some sense of that for you. Well,

:26:02.:26:15.

gives you an idea of what is going on in the arena here as we jump

:26:16.:26:20.

around these three field events will stop it is busy, it is hectic, but

:26:21.:26:25.

you have got the focus as we watch macro Beach of the USA make light

:26:26.:26:40.

work of his second height -- Beach. Final throw in the first round of

:26:41.:26:44.

the men's shotput final. Kurt Roberts, chasing that lead. Another

:26:45.:26:55.

while throw, that is out of the sector. I don't think I have seen so

:26:56.:27:03.

many shot put Smith's -- shotput throws Miss. That was definitely no

:27:04.:27:19.

jump. We watch the Romanian. There are 16 athletes, three Brit -- three

:27:20.:27:29.

are Brits. The top four will take part in this showcase last round

:27:30.:27:32.

where the rest of the arena will stop and jump in reverse order. Only

:27:33.:27:37.

a right to be in that last round and see what you can do. -- burn your

:27:38.:27:53.

right -- earn. They are coming thick and fast. We have only had one clean

:27:54.:28:15.

jump. The lead of 6.8 metres. If it is a quick surface, you only get to

:28:16.:28:19.

map warmup jumps see it to run your runway just twice. Maybe they are

:28:20.:28:25.

struggling a little bit. We have seen three no jumps in a row so far.

:28:26.:28:36.

Well, that is not even up to 6.5. Not a great start for her either.

:28:37.:28:42.

The much vaunted women's long jump yet to really get going. It will be

:28:43.:28:52.

tough to win a medal. Her German counterpart as well will have a say.

:28:53.:28:58.

In the second round of the shotput. The Polish throw likes it. That

:28:59.:29:05.

looks like an improvement for him, but it will be an improvement

:29:06.:29:08.

because of no throw in the first round. He has got one in. 20.89 the

:29:09.:29:13.

lead from the Romanian. In third place. Martins from

:29:14.:29:54.

Brazil, can she continued her lead? Doing well here. Looked as though

:29:55.:29:59.

she was well over on the board. No jump for her. Everybody may have to

:30:00.:30:07.

make some adjustments. There we talked about the track and the

:30:08.:30:12.

impact it has on the horizontal jumps. There was a marginal foul.

:30:13.:30:24.

You said it was really hard to see, when you're down there in the heat

:30:25.:30:29.

of the moment, but it's so obvious on the screen. It's just different

:30:30.:30:37.

when you're down there, in the moment. It is just about making

:30:38.:30:42.

those adjustments. For me when you work with an athlete, you set up the

:30:43.:30:48.

runway. When they take up the tracks and the adrenaline starts to go, my

:30:49.:30:54.

perspective is to move back in the shoe length because of that

:30:55.:31:19.

adrenaline. Not sure that's going to challenge the lead. One of the

:31:20.:31:32.

biggest man in the final here. -- men. An Olympic ROMs medallist in

:31:33.:31:49.

the past. That's what I do, I'd slow it down -- bronze medallist. I would

:31:50.:32:01.

take some time. First round looks like a foul. A big jump, around

:32:02.:32:12.

seven metres. A marginal foul. Possibly alluding to the fact that

:32:13.:32:22.

she has brought some form here. To a certain extent, it's mental game.

:32:23.:32:26.

The ability not to let the environment affect you, slow

:32:27.:32:30.

yourself down, do what you came to do and get the process right. The

:32:31.:32:57.

long jump, the Australian. 30 years of age. Has a season's best of 6.76.

:32:58.:33:10.

European indoor champion. Hit the board had. That is measured, going

:33:11.:33:38.

to take the lead. Here we have the habitats on. 1.93, goes clear --

:33:39.:33:58.

heptathlon. Round one of the long jump. Ugen has jumped brilliantly in

:33:59.:34:14.

doors on the circuit this year. Very consistent. First round of the long

:34:15.:34:21.

jump. That right foot just shot back on her. You see it so many times, it

:34:22.:34:32.

is quite literally her Achilles heel. She reaches out with the right

:34:33.:34:47.

and the left leg goes a little bit further ahead. We watched the event

:34:48.:34:57.

leader Thoreau what won't be an improvement in his lead on that shot

:34:58.:35:17.

-- throw. Back to Ugen, she takes the lead. Everyone will be watching

:35:18.:35:37.

that closely. So, Ugen is kind of the benchmark. Jonathan Jones at the

:35:38.:36:02.

shot put. One of two Americans. They are chasing the medals. Is it all

:36:03.:36:10.

wrapped up. You would think so, but that shot put earlier was about one

:36:11.:36:17.

metre down. He has lost some points, but he is the leader at the moment.

:36:18.:36:29.

You would hope he continues. This is athletics, you never know what might

:36:30.:36:42.

happen. Women's long jump. That's a good effort. No sight of a flag

:36:43.:36:58.

yet. That has got to be close. You could see the two judges to the

:36:59.:37:12.

right of the runway. Seven metres on the button, what an enormous lead

:37:13.:37:23.

that is. But there is some talent queueing up behind her. Reese jumped

:37:24.:37:53.

very well in the last few weeks. She will have seen that seven metre

:37:54.:38:00.

jump, it should give her some inspiration. She is very capable. An

:38:01.:38:16.

Olympic champion in 2012. A lifetime best of 7.23. It is her own

:38:17.:38:27.

championship record. Reese, chasing the seven metre lead. What does that

:38:28.:38:43.

mean? Two sugars? Maybe it means she is stirring it up. It is difficult,

:38:44.:38:52.

she looks slightly ungainly when she is running. She doesn't look as if

:38:53.:38:58.

she is in a great position. But the strength she elevates and gets out

:38:59.:39:16.

for a bit of it, she does very well. Just three centimetres shy for

:39:17.:39:32.

Reese. We can expect jumps well into the two metre mark from Eaton. A

:39:33.:39:43.

world record? It's awkward, he was a metre down earlier. 1.93 should come

:39:44.:39:56.

easy to him. This looked like it might have been crunched on the

:39:57.:40:10.

plasticine. Did she crowd the board? A huge throw in the shot put. An

:40:11.:40:26.

enormous Thoreau from Tom Walsh. Didn't really get a chance to set it

:40:27.:40:35.

up. 21.6, an area indoor record for the New Zealander. 21.6, how about

:40:36.:40:44.

that? It might be enough to take the gold. Back to be women's long jump

:40:45.:41:01.

-- the. Fireworks have already been let in on this first round, seven

:41:02.:41:09.

metres on the board. Sprinting as she approaches the takeoff board.

:41:10.:41:21.

You get a sense that she mistimed that vary slightly. Looking down the

:41:22.:41:41.

list, nearly a metre and a half ahead of the rest. Just shy of 20

:41:42.:41:58.

metres. The last jumper. Stratton, she has only jumped outdoors in the

:41:59.:42:08.

sunshine of Australia. 22 years of age. Good speed on the runway. She

:42:09.:42:25.

didn't get her hands above her head, and her head tipped forward. You see

:42:26.:42:34.

how quickly the arms come through and forward. If she can keep them

:42:35.:42:38.

above her head, it will slow that forward rotation down. Let's see how

:42:39.:42:54.

the Americans respond to, how they respond to Roberts. This is a much

:42:55.:43:05.

stronger surface than they are used to. They are developing faster and

:43:06.:43:08.

faster services. He is getting used to the indoor speed. It is a much

:43:09.:43:18.

harder for many would have outside. Watching the competitor from Spain,

:43:19.:43:21.

the last event of day one. Followed by a clearance that takes

:43:22.:43:46.

him onto the next height, more work on legs, you don't need that is a

:43:47.:43:52.

multi event performer. He will have two more chances to go clear of that

:43:53.:44:08.

new height. The Brazilian, 18.50 in the first round. Eighth place at the

:44:09.:44:18.

moment, if you want to get involved in the second half of the

:44:19.:44:30.

competition, it is 19.92. Round one of the long jump, Jazmine Sawyers of

:44:31.:44:42.

Great Britain. The season's rest of 6.67. Well, that is beyond six

:44:43.:44:47.

metres. Sawyers, maybe just looking a little tight. That was

:44:48.:44:54.

uncharacteristic for her. I think it was a very un- smooth start.

:44:55.:44:58.

Gathering a bit of nerves, wanting to jump in. Apologies for really

:44:59.:45:04.

jumping around here in terms of the performances that we are showing.

:45:05.:45:12.

The youngster from Poland, a wild one down the right handset. That is

:45:13.:45:23.

the danger of rotation. Getting it slyly mistimed, he knew it, didn't

:45:24.:45:31.

he? -- slightly. We saw that massive jump, well, it looked like a massive

:45:32.:45:35.

jump, it was a foul on the first round. Second attempt. Looking to

:45:36.:45:47.

get a valid jump measured. To take the pressure off. She has done it

:45:48.:45:51.

again. That has got to be way over the board. There looks around 7.5

:45:52.:46:06.

metres. As we watch Curtis Beach. The bar 1.96. Beach joins the group.

:46:07.:46:19.

Much to the pleasure of the Portland crowd. A clean sheet so far for

:46:20.:46:28.

Curtis Beach. Together a fairly solid first day. As we wait for the

:46:29.:46:42.

Romanian. The foul in the first round. It is always tricky, this. Do

:46:43.:46:50.

you try and just what a safe one end or are you wasting an effort? Would

:46:51.:46:55.

you tell her? I think you have to go for it. You have to be in the top

:46:56.:47:04.

eight. We had seen to athletes, one go-to seven metres and 6.97. You

:47:05.:47:08.

need a jump of at least 6.31 to stay the top eight now. So do you put a

:47:09.:47:13.

safe one in? You don't have enough time. It is a gamble, you flip a

:47:14.:47:21.

coin. Tony says go for it, what has run many and done here? I don't

:47:22.:47:37.

suppose you have got much choice. 20.22 in sixth place. Will not

:47:38.:47:43.

improve on that. That is going to be touch and go whether he makes the

:47:44.:47:54.

top eight. Well, the cluttering of the bar for the Portuguese athlete.

:47:55.:47:59.

His second failure at 1.96. He has shown he likes the pressure of the

:48:00.:48:06.

last round. He could do it again. The German. 6.34. In eighth place so

:48:07.:48:23.

far. So, right on the cusp. That cut is so important, the top rate only

:48:24.:48:29.

will impress -- the top eight only will progress. She will need some

:48:30.:48:37.

valuable centimetres to add to that 6.34. She lets loose on this fast

:48:38.:48:42.

track in the Oregon Stadium. What has happened? That looked messy. It

:48:43.:48:48.

is a foul. All right, 15th place. Needs to dig

:48:49.:49:18.

deep in the third round. And it doesn't look like he has. So, he is

:49:19.:49:29.

going home. No. That was three fouls for the Portuguese athlete. Day one

:49:30.:49:35.

of the heptathlon is finished for him. We will up to you with the

:49:36.:49:39.

standings as they come in as the rest of the athletes finished their

:49:40.:49:44.

last performances in that high jump. The fourth event of the heptathlon.

:49:45.:49:49.

That was like a session of speed dating. Not that I have ever been

:49:50.:50:01.

speed dating. So, on to the semifinals of the women's 400

:50:02.:50:08.

metres. Surely, the women first is the field events continue. The first

:50:09.:50:31.

semi-final lines up like this. Qualification isn't too difficult.

:50:32.:50:35.

The first three to go through. You might say, the women's 400 metres is

:50:36.:50:39.

one of the easier events to win a medal here. It is wide open. Not too

:50:40.:51:03.

many favourites. Good lane draw. Little bit inexperienced. The former

:51:04.:51:06.

world junior champion, a lot of talent. The Slovak Republic, missed

:51:07.:51:15.

out on a medal in Prague last year. This young lady here doesn't really

:51:16.:51:21.

impressed that much when she races but she has had a great indoor

:51:22.:51:29.

season. Samantha Edwards and Lane two. -- in lane two. Let's not

:51:30.:51:44.

forget, in the first three through to the final tomorrow. No fastest

:51:45.:51:54.

losers from the two semifinals. Winning is all important because

:51:55.:51:57.

getting a good lane draw in the 400 metres is essential. For those who

:51:58.:52:03.

have lanes five and six, they need to use it. Spencer still learning

:52:04.:52:19.

her craft, particularly in doors for me. But the American Championships,

:52:20.:52:26.

she came through in the latter stages the came past retiring

:52:27.:52:31.

Natasha Hastings to book a spot in the American team. She has a

:52:32.:52:36.

tendency to not go too hard on the first 200 but this time is going in

:52:37.:52:41.

real intent will stop not using the advantage of the outside lane so

:52:42.:52:50.

Spencer. Swift but not too fast through the first 200 and Spencer

:52:51.:52:54.

just controlling things. Tends to one of it wide. Spencer controlling

:52:55.:53:04.

it. Top three only go through. Spencer now starting to move away,

:53:05.:53:07.

she is always strongly in the last 30 or 40 metres and showing her

:53:08.:53:23.

talent here, the American. 52.41 for the American. That was a much better

:53:24.:53:38.

executed race for me. Looking at seven metres on the board. Good

:53:39.:53:45.

jump, got the thumbs up from Tony Minichiello. Must have been good.

:53:46.:53:50.

Just a speech she carries across the board. Very simple. Holds arms above

:53:51.:53:55.

her head, recalls the legs and you get the jump. 6.8. It puts her

:53:56.:54:11.

third. The end of the second round. The bad news from a British

:54:12.:54:14.

perspective is that drops Sawyers down to 10th place with her second

:54:15.:54:23.

round of 6.31. She needs a jump of around about 6.41 or better really.

:54:24.:54:31.

By the time we get to the end of the third round it will probably be

:54:32.:54:38.

around this mark here. Athletes settle in and release some of the

:54:39.:54:59.

nerves. Sawyers... The lead still at seven metres. 6.59 in the first

:55:00.:55:16.

round. 6.57 that was in the second, no improvement.

:55:17.:55:25.

Tom Walsh, to build on that enormous throw. An area record. Here we go in

:55:26.:55:33.

the third. It is another big throw for the big Kiwi. Really coming of

:55:34.:55:44.

age. New Zealand have featured in shot put over the years. Now maybe

:55:45.:55:51.

it is the time of the man. It is Walsh leading the charge. 21.4.

:55:52.:56:15.

Another enormous effort. 6.62 in the first round, looks similar for her.

:56:16.:56:19.

We will up there you with that result. As soon as it is available.

:56:20.:56:37.

6.64 it was, in fourth place. And they have Teflon -- heptathlon.

:56:38.:56:51.

Might be a long shot at this stage. We watched the Belarus in

:56:52.:56:59.

COMMENTATOR: Athlete. Next athlete up is the event leader. I bet she is

:57:00.:57:05.

chomping at the bit to get out on the runway again, having jumped

:57:06.:57:09.

seven metres in the first round. Puts a bit of optimism in you.

:57:10.:57:29.

Second semi-final of the 400 metres. This, perhaps the more difficult of

:57:30.:57:34.

the two semifinals. There really is an open race and anyone who really

:57:35.:57:39.

wants to stamp their authority and Spencer did in the first one, give

:57:40.:57:45.

them chat a good chance of a medal. -- themselves. Perhaps looked best

:57:46.:57:58.

out of the qualifiers here. They looked fairly comfortable. The

:57:59.:58:02.

former Nigeria now running for Bahrain. One silver medal at the

:58:03.:58:13.

world student games last summer. Commonwealth Games champion,

:58:14.:58:22.

MacPherson of Jamaica. She is in lane three here and will have two

:58:23.:58:27.

really perform well and make sure she doesn't get left in lane three

:58:28.:58:45.

in the final. Not the best judged race but managed to hold it

:58:46.:58:47.

together. So McPherson needs to be on the

:58:48.:59:04.

qualification. Hayes on the outside has ability. Not sure if she's

:59:05.:59:08.

fulfilled her full pro-tenial, Hayes.

:59:09.:59:16.

May want to dominate through the first 200m and hold on.

:59:17.:59:20.

Top three through to tomorrow's final.

:59:21.:59:31.

So hays to be shot at. And McPherson will have to make up ground. Lit be

:59:32.:59:45.

hard from lane three. McPherson will have Hayes for

:59:46.:59:54.

company. McPherson trying to get back. 23.91. Qiek through 200. And

:59:55.:00:05.

has Adekoya gone too quick? And Hayes looks krtable.

:00:06.:00:12.

McPherson struggling but Adekoya looks strong. McPherson trying to

:00:13.:00:19.

challenge. Hayes wants to win this, but Adekoya gets it. 51.41. A quick

:00:20.:00:23.

erase that one. Very quick through the first 200m. All three of them

:00:24.:00:29.

were struggle in the last 50, but Adekoya was very strong. Managed to

:00:30.:00:33.

hang on ahid of Hayes. And well, she never looked though

:00:34.:00:37.

she was trying that hard. She's pretty tired. Gave it

:00:38.:00:41.

everything, she knows how important it was to win the semifinal. Wasn't

:00:42.:00:45.

able to do so. It will be the Bahrainian who will have a better

:00:46.:00:49.

draw come the final. You can see there, Hayes just going

:00:50.:00:56.

a little bit wide and Adekoya over by a metre which was telling in the

:00:57.:00:58.

end. Watch this here. Hayes battles hard.

:00:59.:01:10.

Not quite got enough. But they're treading water a little bit here.

:01:11.:01:21.

Just hanging on, you're fighting for that lane draw and that position.

:01:22.:01:32.

Event leader, world leader, Ivana Spanovic of Serbia, 7m exactly in

:01:33.:01:35.

the first round. Round 2. She's earned the right to

:01:36.:01:40.

really charge at this. See what she's capable of.

:01:41.:01:46.

It's another big effort. Around that 7m mark.

:01:47.:01:50.

We will bring that to you in a second as we go across to the

:01:51.:01:57.

Heptahlon. Beech of the United States, big roar

:01:58.:02:03.

from the home -- Beach from the United States, big roar from the

:02:04.:02:07.

home crowd. Big jump. I'm determined to give you that

:02:08.:02:12.

result of Spanovic. It was 6.88 no improvement for her.

:02:13.:02:20.

We look to Brittaney Reec seshgs. -- Reece.

:02:21.:02:25.

Big scream from her, that's unusual. Big foul, though.

:02:26.:02:33.

So just 3cm separating the top two performers in the women's long jump

:02:34.:02:36.

final. The Brits not amongst them yet.

:02:37.:02:39.

After two rounds. Right then, possibly the greatest

:02:40.:02:43.

athlete in the world at the moment, Ashton Eaton. Lovely rhythm, well u

:02:44.:02:49.

cuted. Just makes it look so easy.

:02:50.:02:58.

A new Asian indoor record for Adekoya.

:02:59.:03:05.

McPherson will with be in the final but not with a good lane draw.

:03:06.:03:18.

So full summary of the athletes who made it through to the final.

:03:19.:03:47.

Men's 400, the two semifinals of the men's 400 next on the track.

:03:48.:03:54.

Jonathan Jones of the yunts in 8th place. He gets the first throw of

:03:55.:04:00.

round 4 as they reverse. 8th back to first. In the fourth

:04:01.:04:04.

round. So the second half of the

:04:05.:04:09.

competition continues. They've lost 11 of the 19 initial throwers. His

:04:10.:04:15.

best of the comp so far takes him to 5th place. So good performance for

:04:16.:04:17.

him. Round three of the long jump.

:04:18.:04:27.

Jasmine Sawyers of Great Britain with 6.31 to her name so far, needs

:04:28.:04:33.

a jump in excess of 6.55. And that won't be enough.

:04:34.:04:40.

That won't be enough to take Sayyers through to the second half --

:04:41.:04:45.

Sawyers through to the second half of the final. Disappointment for

:04:46.:04:53.

young Jasmine Sawyers. Lauro saw himself pushed from 7th to

:04:54.:04:58.

8th place. What can he do to respond in nothing.

:04:59.:05:17.

He's in 8th place, he had four throws.

:05:18.:05:22.

Under pressure, as is Kai of Japan, two no jumps. Same applies. 6. 55 or

:05:23.:05:26.

better. Should she want to continue in this

:05:27.:05:28.

long jump final. It's got to be another foul, surely?

:05:29.:05:32.

By about a metre. I wonder what's going on there. Ten

:05:33.:05:46.

out of ten for consistency. I think you're being a bit harsh. I think

:05:47.:05:52.

she struggled on the runways, giving her the benefit of the doubt. She

:05:53.:05:56.

went over the board by over a metre, not having the run-up she would want

:05:57.:05:58.

this week. It's normally small margins, but,

:05:59.:06:09.

yes, landing around 7.5m, she's probably at least a metre beyond the

:06:10.:06:12.

board. Right then. This Heptahlon.

:06:13.:06:23.

It is interesting. The leader, Ashton Eaton way out in front.

:06:24.:06:34.

Second place is Felix of the third place.

:06:35.:06:39.

We watch Brugger there look very happy with that as he should. That's

:06:40.:06:45.

his third attempt to 1.99. He's in 6th place overall as you can

:06:46.:06:49.

see there. I think Steve that was more of a

:06:50.:06:56.

shout of relief. He's a 2.6 jumper and to take three attempts at 2m

:06:57.:06:59.

that will be truss straiting and a waste of energy.

:07:00.:07:04.

Yes, and energy so important, I'm guessing in the multievents to

:07:05.:07:06.

conserve and big day tomorrow, right?

:07:07.:07:10.

I think it takes it out of you. If you look within multievents or high

:07:11.:07:14.

jumping you want to take between 9-15 jumps.

:07:15.:07:22.

You want to try to put them in the right place so you have enough

:07:23.:07:24.

energy for the last height. Bukowiecki then, of Poland. The

:07:25.:07:37.

youngster. He's looking to take the Polish

:07:38.:07:47.

leadership that we saw from the double Olympic champion, his

:07:48.:07:50.

compatriate, who dominated for years this this event.

:07:51.:08:01.

We have a new lad on the block. Iz apologise, we're getting pictures

:08:02.:08:04.

direct interest Portland so not in control to show you the results as

:08:05.:08:09.

they come in. 20.43 for the Pole, no improvement

:08:10.:08:11.

for him. Flat, lacking height? I think it

:08:12.:08:17.

gets into the leg chute a bit early. If she worked the vertical, that is

:08:18.:08:20.

driving the free knee t knee that you see, no t the one on the board,

:08:21.:08:24.

if she drives that, gets the height, then gets into the leg chute. I

:08:25.:08:28.

think she went in early. That gives you that flat look.

:08:29.:08:33.

A little bit anningion maybe? I think so, at 6.34 she knows she

:08:34.:08:38.

needs 6.355 to get the extra two jumps to stay in the competition.

:08:39.:08:39.

Probably rushed it a bit. From a British perspective, Sawyers

:08:40.:08:58.

6.31. We jump around the events. The silver medallist position.

:08:59.:09:03.

A stutter and start. That's messy. Possibly the result of that.

:09:04.:09:11.

The women's long jump that we flash to, we see Walsh for the Brits.

:09:12.:09:31.

# # she will have to improve on that, Martins.

:09:32.:09:36.

Proctor is on the cusp in 8th place. Back on the track, the men's 400m

:09:37.:09:45.

semifinal. Two races.

:09:46.:09:51.

And again first three, no fastest losers making it through to the

:09:52.:10:04.

final. In someways it makes it nice and

:10:05.:10:09.

clean and tidy. To be fair with, certainly the women's, you wouldn't

:10:10.:10:12.

have argued about the final. But the men may look at the strength of the

:10:13.:10:13.

two races. Taplin, the fastest man indoors is

:10:14.:10:37.

in lane 6. Interesting field here, because the

:10:38.:10:40.

Kenyan, let's go around the other way. Taplin first. Not sure about

:10:41.:10:46.

Taplin. You see the talent that he has and Grenada of course amaszing a

:10:47.:10:50.

good relay squad as well. Led by James.

:10:51.:10:57.

Taplin has beaten him. Lendore, the team-mate of this man

:10:58.:11:01.

here. They are the three quickest in the world. Taplin, Gordon and

:11:02.:11:05.

Lendore, who have all run 45.5 and under.

:11:06.:11:13.

I thought this man here, Mweresa looked good in qualitiation.

:11:14.:11:23.

High expectations. He's got quicker every race he's run the Kenyans.

:11:24.:11:30.

There is Brenes, in 2012, his year, he had a big race against the

:11:31.:11:33.

emerging James back then. Got a good lane in the final.

:11:34.:11:41.

And then two years ago Kyle Clemons won a bronze and then a gold in a

:11:42.:11:44.

new world record in the 4 X4. So Mweresa of Kenya is in lane 4,

:11:45.:12:03.

and then Lendore and Taplin. The fastest man in the world indoors

:12:04.:12:05.

this year on the outside. Three men on the outside. So bright

:12:06.:12:19.

young talents in, becoming a really competitive event, of course, great

:12:20.:12:21.

event outdoors last year. Lendore may be standing up out of

:12:22.:12:31.

the blocks with Taplin away quickly. Lendore trying to close him down.

:12:32.:12:34.

The Kenyan, and Mweresa, trying to get on terms with the two through

:12:35.:12:38.

the first 200m. Taplin likes to control this. He's run it hard

:12:39.:12:43.

through the first 200. Right on the inside, Clemons, the American, is

:12:44.:12:49.

trying to make up for this. His team-mate got disqualitied in the

:12:50.:12:53.

heats. He's got work to do, Clemons. So top three don't forget. So Taplin

:12:54.:12:58.

out there. Lendore moving, he wants to make the others run wide and

:12:59.:13:02.

Clemons is trying to get around him. But out in front, Taplin all the

:13:03.:13:05.

way, looking dominant. Looking strong. Moves away. Real strap on

:13:06.:13:12.

for third. And Lendore hangs on and Mweresa then taking the third spot.

:13:13.:13:19.

A tough semifinal there with Brenes and Clemons not going through. The

:13:20.:13:27.

men in the outside three lane s if you don't get a draw on the outside

:13:28.:13:33.

lanes it will make it tough. Now Mr Ashton Eaton in the high jump, the

:13:34.:13:41.

Heptathlon. Ashton then the first athlete to

:13:42.:13:43.

atrement the height beyond 2m. Oh no.

:13:44.:13:54.

Not quite what we expected. He's been flawless so far pretty much.

:13:55.:14:01.

Tom Walsh with the huge 21.60 in the fourth round. A big shout and a big

:14:02.:14:08.

throw. Another throw beyond 21m, he put together an incredible series

:14:09.:14:15.

here. He's fast, balanced, found his

:14:16.:14:19.

rhythm and balance. He's building on that big throw.

:14:20.:14:27.

It is an improvement to 21.64. No male Kiwi has ever taken a world

:14:28.:14:33.

indoor title and Walsh looks on his way to doing that.

:14:34.:14:41.

Back o the long jump. Deloach of the States.

:14:42.:14:48.

Decent jump from her. Slightly untidy on landing. We're in

:14:49.:14:52.

the third round, so same as we've seen already, oh, it's a foul.

:14:53.:14:56.

Shame. That was a big jump.

:14:57.:15:04.

Won't be measured. So then, just what, four athletes with another

:15:05.:15:22.

jump. At the moment the Great Britain

:15:23.:15:27.

athletes are in 5th and 8th. Proctor is in 8th but has one more jump

:15:28.:15:32.

remaining as we move to the Heptahlon. We saw Eaton knock the

:15:33.:15:37.

bar off. He's in the silver medal position.

:15:38.:15:48.

Knocks it off. Felix went clear as did Brugger of

:15:49.:15:54.

Germany. Very impressive running from Taplin.

:15:55.:15:59.

That's quick. You can see how much distance there was between him and

:16:00.:16:05.

Lendore and Mweresa, who makes it through to the season's best in the

:16:06.:16:07.

finals, continuing to improve. It's Mironchyk-Ivanova of Belarus.

:16:08.:16:34.

She was one centimetre shot in the third round. Looks almost identical

:16:35.:16:35.

again. Bach, a lot of jumps this afternoon,

:16:36.:16:54.

he nailed that, Beach. Spanovic, 7m event leader. That

:16:55.:16:58.

looks better. Will it be a white flag? No.

:16:59.:17:04.

A big jump, though. Be interesting to see how much this

:17:05.:17:10.

encroaches the Plasticine. They were about to inspect that. Looks like

:17:11.:17:15.

Spanovic has brought some fantastic form, giving everyone something to

:17:16.:17:19.

think about going into an Olympic summer.

:17:20.:17:26.

He had the lead at the early stages, that's very much in the hands of Tom

:17:27.:17:38.

Walsh of New Zealand now, though. He's the Romanian, in second place.

:17:39.:17:39.

A succession of fouls. Ahston Eaton, second attempt.

:17:40.:17:54.

No! Surprising. What you making of that, Tony? Frnths just as he comes

:17:55.:17:58.

off the curb, he's pulling his rite arm into his bowie and dropping the

:17:59.:18:01.

right shoulder which is pulling him into the bar. He needs to stay away,

:18:02.:18:03.

keep the Maslak, the defending champion from

:18:04.:18:25.

Czech Republic, he goes in lane 6. Men's 400, much more competitive

:18:26.:18:38.

than the women's event and lots of familiar names and Maslak the man to

:18:39.:18:42.

beat. He has his arm bands back on, left them in the call-up room this

:18:43.:18:50.

morning. His trademark arm bands in his national colours. He looks very

:18:51.:18:55.

relaxed but he's going to have to be at his best here, because this young

:18:56.:19:00.

man here, Haroun from Qatar, still in, still a teenager. Again, very

:19:01.:19:05.

impressive. Taplin looks good, Maslak looks

:19:06.:19:11.

good, but Haroun is certainly capable, I think, of causing, it

:19:12.:19:15.

wouldn't be an unset because he's been running well all year. Gordon

:19:16.:19:22.

of Trinidad Tobago who came to the championships as the second fastest

:19:23.:19:25.

in the world. We will have to make sure he

:19:26.:19:29.

performs well to get to the final here.

:19:30.:19:40.

Can of Turkey, he's in lane three. Dunkley of Jamaica.

:19:41.:19:51.

And then Alonzo Russell, won a silver in the Commonwealth Games in

:19:52.:19:54.

Glasgow in the relay. He won for the Bahamas.

:19:55.:20:00.

Well, there is Gordon, he won a good 300 and 200 this year, only beaten

:20:01.:20:04.

by Taplin before these championships. I suspect that's

:20:05.:20:07.

because he hasn't raced either of these two here, Haroun and Maslak,

:20:08.:20:11.

and Maslak got the better lane, but Haroun is a quick starter as well.

:20:12.:20:16.

He can get out there and control the two of them.

:20:17.:20:23.

They race each other too much in the first 200.

:20:24.:20:28.

Top three to go through, winning this semifinal so important. They

:20:29.:20:34.

got a very, very good start. Quickest out of the blocks. A yard

:20:35.:20:38.

on Haroun, Maslak started quickly on the outside. These three, already

:20:39.:20:42.

pulling away from the rest. Gordon giving himself plenty of wide run-in

:20:43.:20:47.

to that bend. This tall figure getting around. Not steep curves

:20:48.:20:52.

here, but Haroun can't hold off Maslak, who cuts across, loses a

:20:53.:20:56.

metre or so, loses a bit of momentum, that could be critical for

:20:57.:21:01.

Haroun. Trying to get back on terms with Maslak, who's controlling this.

:21:02.:21:03.

Gordon can't keep with these two. Maslak comes around the top bend

:21:04.:21:08.

now, can he hold off Haroun? Gordon getting closer, top three, don't

:21:09.:21:12.

forget. Maslak moves out. Make them run further, Haroun is coming up,

:21:13.:21:15.

finishing strongly, Haroun just about. Well, I'm going to say get

:21:16.:21:23.

there, did he get there? The chest of Maslak still protruding as they

:21:24.:21:25.

crossed the line. He may have hung on. Be close to see, he thinks he

:21:26.:21:30.

did it, he may well be right. Haroun, strong, but you've gt to

:21:31.:21:34.

say, just lost a bit of momentum. He wanted to get in the front. You can

:21:35.:21:39.

see why. And these two certainly gave Gordon

:21:40.:21:43.

no chance of getting involved at the front.

:21:44.:21:45.

Little handshake there, and Maslak knows if he's going to win the gold

:21:46.:21:49.

medal, he's going to have to do something similar come the final. Yo

:21:50.:21:53.

u have to get in front here and try to control it.

:21:54.:21:58.

Great, Steve, you've seen both the semis, the first three are the

:21:59.:22:02.

people in six, five and four t top lanes, that I are the faster lanes,

:22:03.:22:06.

you have more speed, you have to get to the bell first. That's why these

:22:07.:22:11.

guys are fighting hard. So I would suspect when it comes to seeding the

:22:12.:22:16.

two winners would get six and five and then the seb onned it would be

:22:17.:22:20.

an even draw for lanes four and three if you were in second place,

:22:21.:22:23.

so that might be the difference between the medal f you got lane

:22:24.:22:26.

three or four. Well, there wasn't any difference

:22:27.:22:29.

between the two of them here in terms of times, they've been given

:22:30.:22:34.

45. 71. A little slow, almost half a second slower than Taplin in the

:22:35.:22:37.

first semifinal. Three good contenders.

:22:38.:22:46.

Round five of the shot putt. Tom Walsh of noourz. Hung effort,

:22:47.:22:51.

another big throw -- New Zealand, huge effort, another big throw from

:22:52.:22:57.

him. His fourth throw beyond 21m. He's limping slightly, smiling

:22:58.:23:01.

though, he's enjoying it. Tid he save it? He's done well

:23:02.:23:06.

there. You see the red flag. Started a raise and he put it back

:23:07.:23:10.

down. He looked like he was going over as we go back.

:23:11.:23:15.

We're in the Heptahlon high jump. Kasyanov.

:23:16.:23:21.

2m 02 looking like it's too much for him. It is. That's his third and

:23:22.:23:27.

final failure at that height. 3,420 points on day one. Ashton

:23:28.:23:34.

Eaton needs this to keep his world record dream alive. 2.02. Final

:23:35.:23:39.

attempt for the world Olympic champion. No.

:23:40.:23:42.

Oh, he knows. He was capable of that.

:23:43.:23:47.

Best in the high jump, 1.99, his day's work is done, as we go to

:23:48.:23:56.

Wester. This is significant in the long jump from a British perspective

:23:57.:24:03.

as much as it is hers. Because Italy's a jump that mite not --

:24:04.:24:08.

knock Proctor, the world silver medallist, out of the come pe

:24:09.:24:09.

petition. That jump takes her to fifth place.

:24:10.:24:31.

That means Proctor is in 8th place. She does survive.

:24:32.:24:37.

That was the conclusion of the third round, so two Brits are in the

:24:38.:24:41.

second half of the wum's long jump final.

:24:42.:24:45.

Result of an extremely competitive second semifinal.

:24:46.:25:00.

Qualifiers for the men's 400. Taplin looks like daylight between himself

:25:01.:25:07.

and Maslak and Haroun, it will be about lane draw and who gets to the

:25:08.:25:12.

front first in the, on the first 200m when that final is run

:25:13.:25:14.

tomorrow. Adrei Gag, the penultimate throw of

:25:15.:25:24.

the competition, the man to stop Walsh taking gold. It's not enough.

:25:25.:25:32.

20.89 in the first round, Gag looks pleased with the silver medal.

:25:33.:25:35.

Lifetime best indoors for him. Great performance.

:25:36.:25:39.

Possibly against the form when you look at the season's best. So it's

:25:40.:25:46.

this man then, Tom wall ssh. Four throws over 21. Let's have another!

:25:47.:25:49.

CHEERING Maybe his best.

:25:50.:25:53.

Maybe his best of the whole cop petition.

:25:54.:26:01.

A bring yant series of throws. 21.60 in round 2, 21.40 in round 3,

:26:02.:26:07.

21.64, a lifetime best, an area record in round 4.

:26:08.:26:12.

21.49 in five. What is this in the last round? The last throw of the

:26:13.:26:15.

competition, he's got the gold medal.

:26:16.:26:20.

It's a world-leading throw. What a way to finish. 21.78. Tom Wa will,

:26:21.:26:28.

sh for the first time ever, New Zealand have won a gold medal in the

:26:29.:26:34.

men's Indoor World Championships. Great performance for Tom Walsh.

:26:35.:26:39.

Congratulations from the rest of the guys. He's not the tallest, you can

:26:40.:26:45.

see the big men around him. Shows you what a bit of balance,

:26:46.:26:53.

poise and athleticism can do. Really impressive performance.

:26:54.:26:57.

Not only in that world leading mark, the pressure, but also the series he

:26:58.:26:58.

put in. Czech Republic.

:26:59.:27:10.

Czech leader. Helcelet.

:27:11.:27:15.

So Helcelet, first failure of the afternoon. 2.05.

:27:16.:27:26.

Too much for him at the first attempt. All about points in the

:27:27.:27:33.

Heptahlon accumulated over two days. What a wonderful scene. Tom Walsh

:27:34.:27:41.

nearly made the rostrum in Beijing in the outdoor version of this, last

:27:42.:27:46.

summer, came fourth. But this time good enough for gold.

:27:47.:27:50.

The biggest smile so far of the world championships.

:27:51.:28:06.

Proctor, third attempt. Well a big shout as she landed

:28:07.:28:19.

there. It sounded like it knocked the wind out of her. No jump.

:28:20.:28:28.

Mathias Brugger, back to the Heptahlon. 2.05. Took off a long way

:28:29.:28:34.

away there. A foul for him.

:28:35.:28:43.

Steve don't you think, going ba k to the men's shot put, the idea was

:28:44.:28:46.

they would have the last four throws and focus, did that really happen?

:28:47.:28:51.

I'm hoping it did in the stadium, whether we captured that in the

:28:52.:28:54.

pictures we're being shown here. We're not in control of them.

:28:55.:28:57.

It's hard to know how they feature that in the stadium. I heed like to

:28:58.:29:02.

think the announcement you can hear there, the PA system, will have

:29:03.:29:08.

showcased those four attempts, in particularly Tom Walsh, superb

:29:09.:29:12.

performance. An incredible number of throws, five

:29:13.:29:16.

over 21m. A great competitor. Last round.

:29:17.:29:24.

In the record books there, it was his last throw in 2014 to take

:29:25.:29:28.

bronze. That shows the metal of the man.

:29:29.:29:32.

Great competitor. And also has the distances to match.

:29:33.:29:36.

He's going to be a contender come Rio, too, the confidence that the

:29:37.:29:41.

World Indoor Title will bring him, is considerable.

:29:42.:29:46.

Undoubtedly as we watch Balta in the long jump.

:29:47.:29:55.

So we started the fourth round. That foul of Proctor, so no

:29:56.:30:00.

improvement. Proctor is in 8th place as we go to Beayh in the heptathlon.

:30:01.:30:11.

Curtis Beach currently in 4th place. He knows if he can muster up another

:30:12.:30:18.

season's best, he's got one already in 2.02. If he can go clear on the

:30:19.:30:23.

third and final attempt, he may get in amongst the medals.

:30:24.:30:27.

Got a decent second day. He's got a good endurance as well as speed,

:30:28.:30:34.

unusually for a decathlete, or multieventer I should say.

:30:35.:30:39.

Right then, Lorraine Uggen. Improved in the third round in the fourth

:30:40.:30:43.

round. If it's going to happen, it's got to be happening very soon

:30:44.:30:47.

indeed. I think that's a foul. Indeed, it

:30:48.:30:52.

is. Lorraine Ugen, disappointing in the

:30:53.:30:55.

fourth round. Two jumps remaining, if she can get

:30:56.:31:00.

in the top four. Helcelet of Czech Republic.

:31:01.:31:06.

I think that's fairly clear what he thought of that.

:31:07.:31:17.

6.75 is the fourth place mark, that's what the girls are looking

:31:18.:31:25.

for Proctor and Ugen, one more jump each. A jump of 6.76 for one more

:31:26.:31:29.

jump for a medal. Yes, a medal looks a long way off.

:31:30.:31:37.

Wester improved every round so far. 6.67.

:31:38.:31:42.

Just sense that there may be more to come from Wester.

:31:43.:31:46.

Starts gently on the approach, but then gets quick.

:31:47.:31:48.

A good acceleration into the board. Quick inspection of the Plasticine.

:31:49.:31:59.

She hit the board, we could hear that. Maybe an improvement for her.

:32:00.:32:07.

Oh, decent, 14-plus centimetres to spare.

:32:08.:32:12.

6.59. No improvement. Third and final attempt for Felix.

:32:13.:32:18.

Oh, he's made that look easy. That's the height you were talking about

:32:19.:32:22.

early. Get that upward drive, good example of it there from Felix.

:32:23.:32:27.

Brugger looking to match that, yes, he does.

:32:28.:32:34.

Do you think he's happy there? Eaton had to watch this. I think

:32:35.:32:42.

he's pleased with that. Third and final attempt, pressure jump. His

:32:43.:32:47.

personal best is 2.06, he's close there. Now he will get two more

:32:48.:32:51.

attempts at a personal best at 2.808.

:32:52.:32:58.

Con plach -- 2.08. Congratulations for Brugger of

:32:59.:33:01.

Germany in 6th overall in the fourth event of the 7 in the heptathlon.

:33:02.:33:14.

The men continue in the heptathlon. Final event of the women's

:33:15.:33:22.

heptathlon, culminating in the 800m, a long day. Manufacture A tough day.

:33:23.:33:43.

Came here are high expectations but every competition is about

:33:44.:33:49.

experience. The 800m coming up shortly. This

:33:50.:33:53.

women's long jump final coming to a climax.

:33:54.:34:01.

We know this is a foul, the suggestion is it is a long one. It

:34:02.:34:06.

is. It won't be measured. Doesn't matter.

:34:07.:34:17.

The athletes are introduced for the 800m.

:34:18.:34:25.

In the bronze medal position, you've seen Tyson.

:34:26.:34:32.

She is in a dominant position for the

:34:33.:34:48.

Nwaba coming out, stretching there. Leffler.

:34:49.:34:55.

A good talent from Germany. There is Fo

:34:56.:35:13.

Fodorova will be looking ahead. We would expect Eaton to be ahead of

:35:14.:35:15.

her. And there's Ellenwood.

:35:16.:35:35.

So here is Morgan Lake, maybe not the day she would have liked but if

:35:36.:35:39.

she could muster a personal best, she could still look at the junior

:35:40.:35:42.

record. Probably a tall ask to run a big PB

:35:43.:35:57.

at the end of what's been obviously a day which, I think really at the

:35:58.:36:00.

beginning it's been nearly there. Let's break up. Spanovic in the long

:36:01.:36:10.

jump. 7m that jum np the first round out in front for Spanovic. Another

:36:11.:36:17.

good effort from her. Looks like she will lead the competition from gun

:36:18.:36:21.

to tape. We're in the fourth fourth round. She concludes the fourth

:36:22.:36:27.

round. Going back to Morgan Lake quickly.

:36:28.:36:32.

It was 8.70 in the hurdles. That was the one where high jump is a good

:36:33.:36:34.

event. They asking her to run a seb onned

:36:35.:36:52.

quicker, she seems to be in form. She seems to be in shape.

:36:53.:36:56.

So it's a distinct possibility. My only concern is there's 12 ladies in

:36:57.:37:01.

the race, lit be a bit crowded. Can you get past people when you want to

:37:02.:37:04.

inject that pace. Don't be polite.

:37:05.:37:15.

There is a question of whether or not she can really take out the

:37:16.:37:22.

young American talent. Williams in 5th at the moment.

:37:23.:37:27.

266 points behind the leader. ANNOUNCER: On your marks.

:37:28.:37:30.

The final event of the women's pent at lon.

:37:31.:37:34.

They're pushing at the beginning, trying to find a position.

:37:35.:37:38.

Then settled down. Lake just having her elbows out,

:37:39.:37:44.

moving around the outside. Nwaba goes to the front.

:37:45.:37:51.

I think you know it's always about judgement and trying to be

:37:52.:37:56.

ambitious, but not be silly in the 8 u00m as well. You can get it

:37:57.:38:00.

horribly wrong if you go out a bit too hard. She's got to attack this

:38:01.:38:03.

as much as she can. 30 seconds toer the leader. Tie son Eaton getting a

:38:04.:38:08.

nice ride through that first 200m and a bit of a gap developing to the

:38:09.:38:11.

pack. Yes, I think if you look at her

:38:12.:38:17.

she's going for it. She's trying to run, Brianne as quick as she can, to

:38:18.:38:22.

set up a 2.10 personal best, though that's outdoors sheshgs will be

:38:23.:38:25.

looking to go through. Let's look at what the split time is as she comes

:38:26.:38:28.

around. I will probably be much quicker than she should have based

:38:29.:38:32.

it at. She is probably going to pay the price later.

:38:33.:38:41.

So tie son probably closest to 65 seconds to the leader.

:38:42.:38:45.

So, yes, she's going for it. It's a question of whether or not she can

:38:46.:38:50.

hang on here. And at least put some decent distance for the two

:38:51.:38:53.

Ukrainians, certainly in terms of the goad medal. Mokhnyuk looking

:38:54.:38:59.

safe, but Fodorova and that three seconds or three-and-a-half seconds,

:39:00.:39:03.

that tie son Eaton, if she could move to the silver, the one she held

:39:04.:39:06.

before, outdoors and indoors. Not what she would have wanted coming

:39:07.:39:11.

here, but she's going for it, 200m to two go.

:39:12.:39:16.

The question is can she speed up, when you hear the bell you get

:39:17.:39:22.

excitement. It's usually the third lap you see heptathletes slowing

:39:23.:39:26.

down. But you see her picking up the pace.

:39:27.:39:32.

Eaton will be running for the silver. Have to wait to see what's

:39:33.:39:37.

happening behind, Fodorova a long way behind, good 4-5 seconds. So

:39:38.:39:42.

Eaton hangs on for the win. 2.10, good performance. Nwaba says well

:39:43.:39:48.

done. A real scrap on after that. Look at the clock there, there's ten

:39:49.:39:53.

seconds, Lake crossing the line outside of the world record

:39:54.:39:58.

required. She needed 2.17.8, I reckon she was probably around 2.20.

:39:59.:40:03.

Still a pretty solid day for Morgan Lake. We start to tidy up the

:40:04.:40:07.

positions. The question is, tie son Eaton, you've got to hand it to her,

:40:08.:40:11.

certainly would have moved to the silver medal. Theisen Eaton. It was

:40:12.:40:18.

a massive group. Look at Ashton Iaton, he's holding his hands on his

:40:19.:40:23.

head, she's not sure. A bigger gap than she would have anticipated.

:40:24.:40:28.

Maybe back o to 2.22 for the Ukrainian.

:40:29.:40:32.

I think at that level you've got around 15 points a second. So ten

:40:33.:40:36.

seconds, it's 150 points potentially. So let's see what she's

:40:37.:40:41.

done. This is the agonising wait, just waiting for the scoreboard to

:40:42.:40:43.

come up and give you that result. No other event has this tension. No

:40:44.:40:54.

other event has that agonising wait as Tony put it. You cross the line,

:40:55.:40:57.

you normally know what you've done. She must think she's won the gold.

:40:58.:41:04.

Even she is not sure. And... Just waiting for Thiesen Eaton's score.

:41:05.:41:11.

She's got for that 965 points. Total 4,881. The question is, as we scroll

:41:12.:41:16.

and we're waiting on the computer to go further down in terms of time,

:41:17.:41:19.

she's getting a thumbs up, but no-one can tell her, because it's

:41:20.:41:22.

certainly not come up on the computer yet.

:41:23.:41:26.

This is the confusing thing. They will add the points and you will see

:41:27.:41:31.

a points out along the computer, based on where you finished in the

:41:32.:41:37.

race. They check the time and allocate the points. The total then

:41:38.:41:42.

comes up. So you're waiting, we're waiting to see what 2.20 is giving

:41:43.:41:49.

the Ukrainian girl. So Fodorova we can fell you she was

:41:50.:41:54.

the quickest of the two Ukrainians and her time coming up.

:41:55.:41:59.

But who's won the gold medal here? What an anxious wait.

:42:00.:42:05.

All of them watching, Ashton Eaton watching a cheer is going up, but

:42:06.:42:10.

not for this. Who did it?

:42:11.:42:16.

Is it me? Theisen Eaton will win the

:42:17.:42:21.

heptathlon. She wins the gold. What a performance from her in the 800m.

:42:22.:42:27.

She's snatched the gold from the Ukrainians. Her hauz band, the first

:42:28.:42:30.

to come and congratulate her. What a moment.

:42:31.:42:35.

For these two. He's had his gold medals.

:42:36.:42:38.

In is her first. Her first global title.

:42:39.:42:42.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Goodness me, does she deserve it for

:42:43.:42:46.

that performance in the final event. It looked like it was a lead.

:42:47.:42:51.

It looked like it was a lead that could not be witled away. Could

:42:52.:42:57.

she... Create enough gap between herself and the Ukrainians? We're

:42:58.:43:01.

waiting for confirmation. Thanks for helping me.

:43:02.:43:07.

4,847 points. That's for Mokhnyuk.

:43:08.:43:13.

But winning the gold medal, this young lady here, scrapping and you

:43:14.:43:18.

have to say, that Nwaba helped her, someone to chase, someone to fight.

:43:19.:43:22.

She found that extra half a second or so, that has won her the gold

:43:23.:43:27.

medal. Be honest, heptathletes Ly before this race, people talk to

:43:28.:43:31.

each other, what are u yo going to do, this is what I need how are you

:43:32.:43:35.

going to run. They know what they're going to run. There's a bit of

:43:36.:43:38.

collusion. But not in a bad way, but you know what people are going to

:43:39.:43:41.

run, she's hung on to her coat tails.

:43:42.:43:45.

Well, Steve, you've been following this event all day. And Theisen

:43:46.:43:51.

Eaton, you could tell she was doubting it. She said I've done my

:43:52.:43:54.

bit, but surely they were close enough. There was a big, big gap.

:43:55.:44:00.

There's confirmation. Great performance for Theisen Eaton,

:44:01.:44:06.

that's heart for me, want. This is the desire, this is where she

:44:07.:44:10.

nurtured her talent. A bit of pride in that run over 800m.

:44:11.:44:15.

Gold for Canada. Great performance.

:44:16.:44:20.

A worthy champion as we look back to this long jump finals, still some

:44:21.:44:25.

action. Brittaney Reese. Spanovic in the

:44:26.:44:35.

lead, and Reece likes that, her best so far, 6.97. She jumped 6.88 in the

:44:36.:44:41.

previous round. This may threaten the lead of Spanovic.

:44:42.:44:47.

Just as we wait to see the measurement, it looks as though

:44:48.:44:55.

Reece has given Spanovic something to think about in the penultimate

:44:56.:44:59.

round. Look at that, exactly the same. 7m exactly. Goes into the lead

:45:00.:45:05.

on countback with her 6.97. Wow. What a great performance.

:45:06.:45:12.

Lorraine Ugen. The 5th round.

:45:13.:45:18.

That's better. That's very much better for Lorraine

:45:19.:45:22.

Ugen. Struggled to maybe find her form in

:45:23.:45:26.

the early rounds but has improved by a fraction of centimetres, a jump of

:45:27.:45:32.

6.93 for Lorraine Ugen. She's gone right up into third place.

:45:33.:45:39.

But this is Spanovic looking to respond, it's all kicking off in the

:45:40.:45:44.

5th round of the long jump. Good atmosphere, maybe as a result of

:45:45.:45:54.

Theisen Eaton's performance. Spanovic pushed into second.

:45:55.:45:58.

She's gone back into the lead? Looks like she knows. 7.7.

:45:59.:46:09.

That's a new world leading mark. Absolutely superb performance for

:46:10.:46:18.

Spanovic. That jump or Lorraine Ugen matches the British record of 6.93

:46:19.:46:24.

exactly the same mark of Johnson-Thompson, 6. 93 from last

:46:25.:46:28.

year. Well, this showcase in the last

:46:29.:46:32.

round, the top four athletes, will get one more jump and Lorraine Ugen

:46:33.:46:36.

of Great Britain is one of them. She's currently in third place.

:46:37.:46:42.

7cm behind the silver and 14cm behind that jump. The world leading

:46:43.:46:52.

mark of Spanovic. There are the pentatheletes.

:46:53.:46:59.

And Morgan Lake ended up with 36 points away from the indoor record

:47:00.:47:03.

held since 2002. The good strong run from her in the 800m. Goodness me,

:47:04.:47:09.

the Canadian flag being carried by a very, very proud Theisen Eaton. It's

:47:10.:47:15.

a great thing to see, but it's also for me anyway it's what makes the

:47:16.:47:19.

multievent so enthralling right until the very end and that

:47:20.:47:24.

agonising wait as you try to find out, did I do enough? Did they

:47:25.:47:29.

finish close enough to me? Did I muster enough points?

:47:30.:47:33.

What a story. I think if you are the Ukrainian

:47:34.:47:37.

girl you've got to be kicking yourself. To run 2.20, you have a PB

:47:38.:47:43.

of around, let me check my notes, she's got a personal best of 2.16.

:47:44.:47:47.

You only needed two seconds, 2.18 and you would have held on to your

:47:48.:47:52.

gold. It may be they thought it was too big a margin for her to catch.

:47:53.:47:55.

It looked like they came from the power end of the spectrum.

:47:56.:48:00.

And that makes it hard to run. It shows you if you don't perform to

:48:01.:48:11.

a level where you should in one of the five events, it will affect the

:48:12.:48:15.

score overall. As we see, Felix go clear at 2.11.

:48:16.:48:21.

Lorraine Ugen in third place. This is the last round of the long

:48:22.:48:25.

jump. That was quick on the approach.

:48:26.:48:31.

She's matched the British record. In the penultimate round.

:48:32.:48:37.

This the last round, another long way into the sand pit.

:48:38.:48:41.

Finally found her form. She struggled slightly in the earlier

:48:42.:48:47.

rounds, it is a valid jump. Finally got her rhythm going.

:48:48.:48:55.

6. 86. It's another good effort, may come away with a bronze medal.

:48:56.:49:03.

It's De Loach -- Deloach who can deprive her of that, you can see 8cm

:49:04.:49:11.

short of Lorraine Ugen. So Britain maybe has it first medal from these

:49:12.:49:18.

world indoor championships. Deloach of the United States can

:49:19.:49:22.

stop that happening with this very jump.

:49:23.:49:27.

6.93 or better. Deloach quick on the approach. A

:49:28.:49:33.

huge effort. An enormous jump.

:49:34.:49:43.

We have no idea who that is on the board. If it's a valid jump it looks

:49:44.:49:50.

like it's the end of the brondz medal chat around Ugen's jump. If

:49:51.:49:54.

that was her foot, it's a valid jump.

:49:55.:50:08.

Heptathlon 800m wait was here. Of the quickfire rounds, quick

:50:09.:50:14.

measurements, they're double checking here for some reason. It

:50:15.:50:17.

looked good on the board. Brilliant performance. If this is what it

:50:18.:50:27.

looked like beyond 7m, let's remind you, 7.07 Spanovic, and 6.93 Ugen

:50:28.:50:36.

and Reece as well. But this jump... As we wait anxiously, Ugen in the

:50:37.:50:43.

background, packing up her stuff, she can do something nothing, her

:50:44.:50:48.

fate is sealed. It's in hands of the officials to measure Janay DeLoach.

:50:49.:50:55.

Well... Can't believe we've gone away from that anxious moments as we

:50:56.:51:01.

watch Felix. We knock him -- we watch him knock the bar off.

:51:02.:51:05.

Hopefully we go straight back. 6.89 it is for DeLoach, a season's

:51:06.:51:12.

best but not enough to stop Lorraine Ugen take the bronze medal. Great

:51:13.:51:18.

performance for Lorraine Ugen. 6.93 in the 5th round. Two athletes

:51:19.:51:23.

remain, but they're already ahead of her.

:51:24.:51:28.

Reese in the silver spot. Olympic champion from 2012. Went into the

:51:29.:51:33.

lead in the fifth momentarily for seconds before it was pulled back in

:51:34.:51:38.

favour of the Serbian, Spanovic. Only these two remain. Reese and

:51:39.:51:47.

Spanovic, what's it to be? Reese you need to jump in excess of 7.7cm if

:51:48.:51:54.

you want to upgrade your silver to a gold.

:51:55.:51:58.

She is attacking this hard. Quick, that's enormous!

:51:59.:52:04.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Reese looks like she saved her best

:52:05.:52:10.

for the last round. She knows it. She doesn't need to

:52:11.:52:17.

look back. Surely that goes into the lead.

:52:18.:52:23.

But Spanovic has another jump and the chance to respond, perfect on

:52:24.:52:26.

the board, with space. Big cheer from the crowd, they know.

:52:27.:52:34.

Nothing on our scoreboard. 7.22, a new world-leading mark.

:52:35.:52:40.

But it's not a gold medal yet. My word. What a jump.

:52:41.:52:44.

What an enormous effort. Spanovic, then, has led for the

:52:45.:52:55.

majority of this competition, responded well when she saw Reese

:52:56.:52:58.

take the lead. She's seen a world-leading mark of

:52:59.:53:10.

7.22, just one centimetre short of her own championship record she set

:53:11.:53:13.

in winning this title. Four years ago.

:53:14.:53:17.

Spanovic. 7.22.

:53:18.:53:21.

Twiflted in the air, not going to be enough.

:53:22.:53:29.

Ooh, that's agonising. Brilliant performance for Reese.

:53:30.:53:31.

Gold for USA. Brilliant performance. Absolutely

:53:32.:53:44.

superb effort. Last round, that showcase, it worked well, certainly

:53:45.:53:48.

in favour of the home advantage for the Americans.

:53:49.:53:53.

Huge effort. And Britain's first medal.

:53:54.:54:00.

Superb from Lorraine Ugen. A great jump there at 6.93 to get the bronze

:54:01.:54:08.

medal. A really superb jump. How Reese responded there, 7.22.

:54:09.:54:16.

Exactly as she did four years ago, 7.23 in the last round in Istanbul

:54:17.:54:22.

of the world indoors. A carbon copy here in Portland, 2016.

:54:23.:54:26.

All of the excitement in the field and a couple of great events, like

:54:27.:54:33.

women's long jump. Now we have two track finals

:54:34.:54:38.

beginning, well, first up the women's 60m hurdles.

:54:39.:54:43.

We've had one medal from Lorraine Ugen in the long jump, can Porter or

:54:44.:54:49.

Solomon come away with a medal in the 60 hurdles final? Men's 60m

:54:50.:54:53.

after that. That will be the conclusion of what's been an

:54:54.:54:58.

exciting evening in Portland. Introductions now.

:54:59.:55:03.

Solomon of Great Britain from Bromley.

:55:04.:55:15.

White wiet got through as the fastest loser by a couple of

:55:16.:55:24.

thousand sandzs of a second. Ivancevic made a new Croatian record

:55:25.:55:32.

this year to make it to the final. The quickest woman in the world

:55:33.:55:42.

indoors this year, will be introduced next, the Americans have

:55:43.:55:47.

high hopes in this event. Brianna Rollins.

:55:48.:55:55.

Only fourth last year, but she will hope for the gold here.

:55:56.:56:06.

What about her team-mate, Kendra Harrison, only beaten by 100th of a

:56:07.:56:09.

second. Less than that.

:56:10.:56:16.

The defending champion, Ali, from the USA.

:56:17.:56:21.

Only Jones has defended this title. Porter would like to win the gold,

:56:22.:56:32.

she has a bronze. She will need to improve significantly.

:56:33.:56:45.

A surprise brondz outdoors for Talay and she has brought that form here.

:56:46.:56:50.

But she's in lane 8. USA so well represented here.

:56:51.:57:03.

Rollins, Harrison, Ali, Porter and Solomon for Great Britain.

:57:04.:57:09.

And then outdoor medallist Talay and there's Reese continuing her lap of

:57:10.:57:14.

honour. Quite a formidable performance,

:57:15.:57:18.

world leading mark, last round of a competition. That's the moment you

:57:19.:57:23.

dream about when you're training. She kind of does it, I wouldn't say

:57:24.:57:28.

regularly, but it's something that she looks very comfortable doing.

:57:29.:57:40.

A great competitor, great speed on the runway and then shortened her

:57:41.:57:46.

stride and got lift off. That coupled with the speed.

:57:47.:57:53.

Ivancevic. Probably was watching the long jump

:57:54.:58:03.

final maybe with Spanovic, pipped by Reese at the end.

:58:04.:58:09.

A big surprise if Ivancevic were to pip the Americans here.

:58:10.:58:14.

Rollins. I think she's the favourite. It's so

:58:15.:58:18.

close to call here. It's about executing. It always is

:58:19.:58:22.

in the hurdles. You've got to start well obviously.

:58:23.:58:27.

But then staying calm, hurdles claterring around you.

:58:28.:58:32.

Harrison of course has the ability to run 400 hurdles as well. 7.77, so

:58:33.:58:37.

close to Rollins in the US championships last week.

:58:38.:58:43.

It was less than a 100th of a second.

:58:44.:58:47.

And Ali, she looked good in qualification. Maybe she's just

:58:48.:58:51.

rounded nicely at the right time for the final.

:58:52.:58:56.

I said that Tiff porter, she will have to improve a little bit. Only

:58:57.:58:59.

ran eight flat in qualifying. Talay, she can start quickly.

:59:00.:59:07.

European champion back in 2012. So no country has ever had a clean

:59:08.:59:24.

sweep here. USA have had two in the top three, Canada two in the top

:59:25.:59:30.

three, so, too, Jamaica but no country has had a clean sweep in the

:59:31.:59:33.

women's 60m hurdles. So lane one, Solomon of Great

:59:34.:59:52.

Britain, Whyte of Canada 2, Ivancevic Croatia 3, Rollins, United

:59:53.:59:57.

States 5, and Ali United States and 6, Porter Great Britain, Talay,

:59:58.:00:00.

Belarus, lane 8. Oh, look at that, right in the

:00:01.:00:09.

middle f Harrison hits the first hurdle. Rollins leads this. Porter

:00:10.:00:15.

trying to get there. Ali gets there. Ali, right at the end, came through

:00:16.:00:20.

to the edefend her title. Porter ran a much better race.

:00:21.:00:29.

Rollins couldn't hang on. Well, no American 1, 2, 3 again.

:00:30.:00:34.

Tiff Porter a better performance. What about Ali? It looked as though

:00:35.:00:39.

it was Rollins, but Harrison got the best start. And then slammed into

:00:40.:00:42.

the first hurdle. And because of that, her race was

:00:43.:00:47.

gone. And Ali now realising what she's

:00:48.:00:51.

done. Only Jones has defended this title successfully.

:00:52.:00:56.

Of the three Americans, she was not the one expected to win the gold

:00:57.:01:00.

medal. The other two were the favourites. But she's the one who

:01:01.:01:04.

came through. An interesting start here. You see

:01:05.:01:08.

Rollins stumble. Harrison gets out. But I think she pushed too hard. Got

:01:09.:01:13.

too close to the hurdle, ended up on top of it. 13m in to the first

:01:14.:01:18.

hurdle. Eight strides, she's driven determined. Got right on top of it.

:01:19.:01:22.

And there is a lead, like, as it comes up, hits the hurdle.

:01:23.:01:30.

And from that point on, it looked like Rollins' race, but Porter held

:01:31.:01:34.

on well. Wasn't sure about her position tochlt be fair she was a

:01:35.:01:38.

clear bronze medallist there. So the gold and the bronze the same as last

:01:39.:01:41.

time. Rollins coming through for the silver this time.

:01:42.:01:49.

As you were, as you were. Well, the Americans getting the two,

:01:50.:01:53.

not the full three, though. And well done Tiff Porter because

:01:54.:01:57.

she saved her best performance of the season for the final. I'm not

:01:58.:02:02.

sure that Tiffany Pormenter seemed pleased. Most people would have said

:02:03.:02:06.

if she won a bronze given how she's been performing and the field,

:02:07.:02:09.

there's a smile. Good to see, maybe she wasn't sure she'd won the

:02:10.:02:11.

bronze. She comes to join the other two.

:02:12.:02:17.

Tiffany Porter once more gets on the podium for Great Britain.

:02:18.:02:20.

That's superb. If you look at it at this level,

:02:21.:02:25.

it's about execution. You've seen Harrison go out really, really hard

:02:26.:02:29.

there, endeavouring to get the quick start. She's overcooked it, got on

:02:30.:02:35.

the top of the first hurdle and there goes the race Tiffany did the

:02:36.:02:40.

race she's capable of and been rewarded. 7.9.

:02:41.:02:43.

The gold goes to Ali. Been a good few minutes for the USA.

:02:44.:03:26.

I guess by proxy, even Ashton Eaton was cheering because his Mrs won a

:03:27.:03:31.

gold as well. That's for Canada. A great story, Ali, you know, she's,

:03:32.:03:36.

she didn't, she missed out in the summer. But coming back and winning

:03:37.:03:42.

and retaining this title. Against such stip opposition from

:03:43.:03:46.

her own country. That's her son. He was born in May last year.

:03:47.:03:49.

Titus Maximus. A really Roman name. Good to see Tiff Porter come back.

:03:50.:04:03.

It's been an indifferent winter for her. I think you hit the nail on the

:04:04.:04:07.

head, Tony. The one thing you can say about Tiff Porter, she gets

:04:08.:04:11.

herself in the final. If you get in the final in the hurdles indoors and

:04:12.:04:15.

out doors you have a chance. She missed out, remember her rolling

:04:16.:04:20.

over the track across the line in Beijing, when it looked as though

:04:21.:04:24.

she would win a medal, that was a huge disappointment for her. Though

:04:25.:04:27.

she's not been at her best this winter, she pulled out her best of

:04:28.:04:31.

the year so far in that race. And you can't ask for more, wh

:04:32.:04:36.

you're endeavouring to do as an aet leet is produce a season's best or

:04:37.:04:39.

PB at the championships, that's what you are trying to do. If you look at

:04:40.:04:45.

Tiffa in, y, is e's done that. I think she is the consummate

:04:46.:04:48.

professional. You see her warm up and she's so driven. Sometimes a

:04:49.:04:53.

little steely-faced but she smiles there and she gets a bronze. She's

:04:54.:04:56.

executed. Well that was a cracking final. Now

:04:57.:05:13.

we move to the men. This time no hurdles. 60m flat. The lights are

:05:14.:05:18.

dimmed. The music starts. The atmosphere builds.

:05:19.:05:28.

The fast men will be stepping out. Look there, that world lead, moved

:05:29.:05:32.

himself into the top ten of all time.

:05:33.:05:37.

60m indoors, can he win his first ever global title. Can he win

:05:38.:05:41.

Jamaica's first ever world indoor title at 60m?

:05:42.:05:45.

Unbelievable they have never won it before.

:05:46.:05:55.

Now he has to think about the Chinese athlete, Xie, youth Olympic

:05:56.:06:19.

champion, just 22. Former youth Olympic champion.

:06:20.:06:27.

And Bromell, the 20-year-old. Looking to win a medal indoors.

:06:28.:06:32.

The other end of the age scale... The ever-present Kim Collins.

:06:33.:06:41.

At the age of 39, producing world class sprinting.

:06:42.:06:52.

And Asafa Powell, perhaps the moment he's waited for. The chance, what a

:06:53.:06:58.

chance. And Su Bingtian made the final last

:06:59.:07:14.

year. Is showing that he's improving all

:07:15.:07:15.

of the Gittens of Barbados, breaking his

:07:16.:07:27.

national indoor record, which stood since 1999.

:07:28.:07:36.

Around 6.53. Former world indoor silver medallist

:07:37.:07:37.

Rodgers of the United States. Three men from America, two from

:07:38.:07:47.

China. One from Barbados.

:07:48.:07:55.

Niechlt niechlt There they are, Bracy, Xie, Bromell,

:07:56.:08:01.

Collins, Powell, Su, Gittens and Rodgers.

:08:02.:08:07.

The questions have been asked about Powell so many times over the years,

:08:08.:08:13.

does he have what it takes to win the big races?

:08:14.:08:18.

He looks great in the heats. He looks great in qualitying, great

:08:19.:08:21.

when there's no pressure on. But can any of these men put him under the

:08:22.:08:26.

sort of pressure required to make him tighten up and perhaps lose this

:08:27.:08:31.

race? Bracy won the silver medal two years

:08:32.:08:37.

ago. Xie, a rising talent. Bromell a rising talent. Surely he will look

:08:38.:08:41.

to the Olympic Games this summer as a chance to show what he can do.

:08:42.:08:45.

Collins will undoubtedly be there again. Qualification for him won't

:08:46.:08:50.

be as difficult as is it is for the Americans. The man from St Kitts --

:08:51.:09:00.

Kitts and Nevis could be a threat. Collins produces his best when he

:09:01.:09:13.

needs it. Powell has the question marks hanging over him. What about

:09:14.:09:21.

Su Bingtian? Missed out on a medal behind Bracy two years ago.

:09:22.:09:26.

Gittens, can stop very quickly. He did that in the semis and kept

:09:27.:09:30.

going. Mike Rodgers, 30 years of age now.

:09:31.:09:33.

ANNOUNCER: On your marks. The finaling event of day two of

:09:34.:09:56.

these World Indoor Championships. Bracy on the USA on the far side,

:09:57.:10:02.

then Collins in four, Powell the favourite in five, Su of China six,

:10:03.:10:06.

Gittens in 7 and Rodgers 8. Powell gets another cracking start.

:10:07.:10:08.

So does Bromell. Bromell leading this. Powell is trying to get there.

:10:09.:10:13.

Brm brom has this. And Bromell wins it.

:10:14.:10:18.

6.47. And once again, Powell cannot win a world title. He's been beaten

:10:19.:10:24.

by a younger man and a better man on the day.

:10:25.:10:27.

This is a huge sprint talent. A medal outdoors last year. It's a

:10:28.:10:32.

gold medal this time. Bromell.

:10:33.:10:38.

He comes out on top. Once more Powell can only look and

:10:39.:10:40.

wonder. 6.47, a new personal best.

:10:41.:10:50.

You've got to hand it to Bromell. He ran a great race. Started well.

:10:51.:10:54.

And then just got that half metre and kept going.

:10:55.:10:58.

You couldn't say that Powell didn't start well. He was in the race at

:10:59.:11:01.

this point. Then he doesn't move through. And where's the flowing

:11:02.:11:06.

Powell? Where's the Powell that we saw in the heats and the semifinal?

:11:07.:11:12.

He just doesn't run with the same fluidity. Bromell got ahead. Tony,

:11:13.:11:17.

you said get ahead of him, put him under pressure. You do not see the

:11:18.:11:29.

same Powell coming through. You look at his facial expression, he's

:11:30.:11:33.

tense. That tension has affected the stride length. He may have had the

:11:34.:11:37.

frequency of step and some of the shape, but he doesn't get the knees

:11:38.:11:47.

in the same position. In fairness, he runs out of the track.

:11:48.:11:53.

Well, he maybe was catching him, but you know, Bromell is a good 100m

:11:54.:12:00.

runner. This guy will only get quicker and Powell, you know, what

:12:01.:12:04.

an opportunity again. You run 6.44, 6.44 and then it comes

:12:05.:12:10.

to the final and just waiting for it to come up on the results.

:12:11.:12:14.

The result on our computer is not right.ly wait for that to be

:12:15.:12:17.

officially ratified. There's no doubt about our winner.

:12:18.:12:23.

This young man here. And the USA have maybe found well, I

:12:24.:12:30.

don't know if he will challenge Bolt yet, but he won't be far away. He

:12:31.:12:36.

will be improving all the time. You think about DeGrasse, the Canadian

:12:37.:12:39.

talent he tied with at the world championships. They are the future

:12:40.:12:44.

of world strinting. And to win the world indoor title

:12:45.:12:47.

will give him so much confidence. You can see the photo finish. Forp

:12:48.:12:52.

me, Powell was involved in that. He's not coming up as in the top

:12:53.:12:57.

four on our computer at the moment. But I suspect, well, anyone with any

:12:58.:13:02.

eyes can see there, he's, Gittens is the one who may have nicked the

:13:03.:13:06.

silver there. Though it says here that Collins finished ahead. We will

:13:07.:13:10.

wait for them to tidy that up. It's not official. That's the photo

:13:11.:13:13.

they've been given. Just watching here. Gittens in the blue. What a

:13:14.:13:16.

performance from him. Looking across there.

:13:17.:13:20.

Certainly not Collins who's finished second. That's what it says on our

:13:21.:13:26.

computer, but I think Powell might have been tipped for silver even

:13:27.:13:27.

here. Be interesting to see. Gittens is looking across, you'd

:13:28.:13:36.

think if he'd concentrate, he may have got it. You can't tell, because

:13:37.:13:39.

that camera is beyond the finish line. That's the one that the

:13:40.:13:44.

official also be looking at. And examining.

:13:45.:13:49.

APPLAUSE Well, what a last half hour for the

:13:50.:14:01.

USA. Reese in the long jump, Ali in the

:14:02.:14:06.

60m hurdles and this young man, Bromell.

:14:07.:14:13.

Three gold medals in the space of about 15m.

:14:14.:14:21.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE When qlou start running 6.47, you

:14:22.:14:26.

know, he's already run under ten seconds, but it shows you, you know,

:14:27.:14:33.

you can start well and transfer that speed into his ability at 100m. He's

:14:34.:14:37.

got every prospect of getting down, even at this stage, into the 9

:14:38.:14:41.

eights and down into the high 9.7s perhaps. I think you're right there.

:14:42.:14:46.

If you look at world class running you have to run under ten seconds in

:14:47.:14:53.

the semifinal to make the final. Thofr r then it's who can hold their

:14:54.:14:57.

nerve. He won't be too happy. Gittens is delighted. Can I tell you

:14:58.:15:02.

that Powell may well have hung on to the silver ahead of Gittens. Just

:15:03.:15:06.

waiting for full confirmation. It's come up now. 100th of a second

:15:07.:15:13.

between the two. Powell we think will be on the rostrum, Gittens as

:15:14.:15:17.

well. Great performance from him. But there was no doubt about the

:15:18.:15:26.

winner. He was, he wasn't headed, he was a good start.

:15:27.:15:36.

Okay, well done. Did he give him some flowers there?

:15:37.:15:39.

Anyway, great race, great way to finish.

:15:40.:15:42.

You know, it's always good, our sport needs new people, new faces,

:15:43.:15:46.

new heroes. Bromell could well turn into one of

:15:47.:15:49.

those. Yes, you know, you see the

:15:50.:15:53.

Americans, it's amazing. The home advantage. We saw it in 2012. The

:15:54.:16:03.

home advantage kicking in, 1-2 in the pole vault for the women.

:16:04.:16:08.

Sam Kendrick. So good start yesterday. Three

:16:09.:16:12.

medals in two events. Its's just continued today.

:16:13.:16:17.

Gold in the 60. Reese last round of the long jumg p.

:16:18.:16:23.

The Americans are doing really well. You're right, youngsters, changing

:16:24.:16:27.

of the guard, you know, you can throw the cliches at it. It is

:16:28.:16:30.

important to see where the future lies. You know, reflecting on young

:16:31.:16:36.

Morgan Lake's per fom ance, when I say that, you know, the youngsters

:16:37.:16:40.

coming to these championships and gaining experience, we talk about

:16:41.:16:45.

it, we talk about the pressure of an old man like Powell struggles to, I

:16:46.:16:49.

say that in the nicest way, inverted commas, as we see in mid-screen,

:16:50.:16:54.

it's tough. It's tough. And it's tough, especially if you build a

:16:55.:17:01.

pattern of negative ex-personses. Pch you feel the pressure, getting

:17:02.:17:05.

tense. And unravelling that. It's hard, right?

:17:06.:17:12.

Well, jugs t tidy this up. Trayvon Bromell confirmed with a new

:17:13.:17:15.

personal best. Brilliant run.

:17:16.:17:21.

Will Powell ever win a global tight snl this was his big chance, but it

:17:22.:17:25.

wusz a silver for the Jamaican. Cracking race. At the bottom, who

:17:26.:17:48.

men you they have thought would be among the medals, Bracy and Collins,

:17:49.:17:50.

having to settle for 7th and 8th. I think if you look at that, that's

:17:51.:18:02.

three 60m races in a day n a programme. You're seeing the

fatigue. I'm not saying, age has anything to do with that. From

:18:08.:18:15.

Powell's point of view especially, he's relaxed to the first two rounds

:18:16.:18:19.

then for whatever reason he feels he has to do something different, be

:18:20.:18:23.

very serious, he has to be, it's not worked for him. He didn't transition

into a better position. Or into that pick up and into that longer stride

length that took him away that we'd seen in the first two rounds today.

:18:33.:18:38.

:18:39.:18:42.

And Portland certainly seen some great action today. It's been a bit

:18:43.:18:51.

of a mixed bag for Great Britain. A false start in the semifinals.

:18:52.:18:56.

Wonderful day for the United States. Four gold medals, three silvers.

:18:57.:18:58.

What a start. Great Britain with two bronze

:18:59.:19:03.

medals. Lorraine Ugan in the long jump and

:19:04.:19:10.

Tiffany Porter in the 60m hurdles. Disappointments elsewhere, but of

:19:11.:19:13.

course our coverage of these championships will continue with

:19:14.:19:16.

high lights of the day's action at 1pm on BBC 1 later today. And then

:19:17.:19:20.

we've got live coverage, well I guess it's later tonight on the red

:19:21.:19:24.

button at 6pm. Then on BBC 2 at midnight.

:19:25.:19:28.

Been a cracking first day. We hope you will join us again for

:19:29.:19:31.

tomorrow's action. That's it for now from Steve and

:19:32.:19:33.

Tony and myself. See you soon.
