Good evening and welcome to stop,'s stadium. A perfect setting and

:00:47.:00:54.

leaving for live Diamond League athletics receiving. Colin and I

:00:54.:00:58.

are looking to the best of the rest in the world because we have no

:00:58.:01:02.

Brits here this evening. We are going to go racing straightaway

:01:03.:01:07.

because the athletes are out on the track for the men's 400 metres. And

:01:07.:01:11.

400 metres has not been setting the world alight so far but it takes on

:01:11.:01:21.
:01:21.:01:27.

unseen more this season but LaShawn Merritt is returning to the track,

:01:27.:01:34.

so I think all eyes will be on him. It is a little bit controversial at

:01:34.:01:41.

this moment in time. Some are happy, some are not savvy, but this man

:01:41.:01:47.

will try to get everything off his shoulders. -- not so happy. Why was

:01:47.:01:57.
:01:57.:01:59.

he banned? He took a drug, a social drug, let's say. They decided that

:01:59.:02:04.

21 months, which is a ban we have never heard of, has allowed him to

:02:04.:02:10.

come back and complete here today. Here's the defending world champion.

:02:10.:02:19.

If you keep that in mind, we are surprised that the USA has let him

:02:19.:02:24.

have competed. One of their roles is that you must compete in the US

:02:24.:02:31.

trials to compete here. And of course he was off when they were on.

:02:31.:02:40.

It was talked about as their male enhancement product and that is why

:02:40.:02:47.

it was not so bad. Some people say has he brought the sport into drug

:02:47.:02:53.

-- disrepute? Some people say, a drug ban is a drug ban and we do

:02:53.:02:58.

not want that reputation in our sport. But the walls are the rules.

:02:58.:03:06.

Let's go over to our commentary team now.

:03:06.:03:13.

His national record, it is mighty impressive but it goes back four

:03:13.:03:19.

years to the championships in Japan, in Osaka. A lot of attention

:03:19.:03:26.

focused on this man, sure no merit. What sort of shape is in? Only a

:03:26.:03:35.

few men have broken 13 seconds this year. Merritt, who has run many,

:03:35.:03:45.
:03:45.:03:48.

many times under the world-leading time of 44.65, goes in at lane to.

:03:48.:03:57.

The world's fastest this year, Bartholomew, is in lane six. Brown,

:03:57.:04:03.

he appears to be complaining about his number coming off. I suspect he

:04:03.:04:13.
:04:13.:04:14.

felt the pain digging into him. -- the pain. I used to get numbers put

:04:14.:04:19.

on to my best when I was wearing it, so they were put on in a stretched

:04:19.:04:24.

shape. Maybe some athletes have not learned that particular trick. A

:04:24.:04:32.

lovely evening. It has been a very windy Bay, though. Here we are just

:04:32.:04:35.

hoping this that wind does this. It is easing off a bit and it has

:04:35.:04:42.

almost got chilly here. It has been 24, 25 degrees for much of the day

:04:42.:04:49.

in the Swedish capital. Into their blocks of the second time. The

:04:49.:04:59.
:04:59.:04:59.

men's 400 metres or stop Quow is in lane one. Christopher Brown is in

:04:59.:05:08.

three for the Bahamas. Jermaine Gonzales is in five. Bartholomew

:05:08.:05:13.

goes in six. Angelo Taylor is in seven. And a local man, Wissman, in

:05:13.:05:23.
:05:23.:05:35.

Taylor has gone away very quickly. Wissman is really aggressive. How

:05:35.:05:41.

is Bartholomew going? He is a big powerful man. Jermaine Gonzales is

:05:41.:05:51.
:05:51.:05:52.

going well as well. Bartholomew is leading this very late now. Look at

:05:52.:05:57.

Merritt in two. What a measured performance from the world or

:05:57.:06:01.

Olympic champion, trying to come through on the outside. Look at

:06:01.:06:06.

Merritt. Is he going to come back? It is going to be very tight. I

:06:06.:06:14.

don't know if he got it or not! It was very tight. The winning time,

:06:14.:06:24.
:06:24.:06:26.

44.70. Just outside the world best remarkably in the last few minutes.

:06:26.:06:31.

Is surprising performance from Bartholomew, but what a good a run

:06:31.:06:36.

it from at Merritt. Yes. I think Gonzales looked as though he had

:06:37.:06:44.

got that, though. A big fellow. He has been running well this year. He

:06:44.:06:49.

has got some good times to his name this season. That is a big

:06:49.:06:54.

improvement indeed for this fellow. He has promised and delivered, at

:06:54.:07:04.
:07:04.:07:04.

last. I think, yes, he has won it. What about that? Christopher Brown

:07:04.:07:12.

gets the third place. My goodness! A tough finish. And they all closed

:07:12.:07:16.

down on each other in the final stages. Brown was in the mix as

:07:16.:07:23.

well. Angelo Taylor on 44.82 in 4th place. Almost seven, we have a

:07:23.:07:33.
:07:33.:07:38.

decent 400 metres race here. -- all of race son of. 45 seconds had not

:07:38.:07:43.

been broken before tonight. Jermaine Gonzales has broken 45

:07:43.:07:53.
:07:53.:08:03.

seconds for the first time, beating Well, 44.74 in his first race back?

:08:03.:08:10.

Very impressive indeed. But you must remember, he is the Olympic

:08:10.:08:15.

champion and world champion, so for me, a solid opening and good

:08:15.:08:18.

performance and he has made it clear Bobby he is a threat for the

:08:18.:08:23.

World Championships. He has done all of those things and is a class

:08:23.:08:28.

act, but nevertheless, to have been out bore all that time and to come

:08:28.:08:36.

back into the next, it is tough? went up quite gingerly for him. For

:08:36.:08:40.

me, I was expecting him to go a bit more aggressive to test himself,

:08:40.:08:45.

but to finish second in that field, it is not going to be much tougher

:08:45.:08:50.

at the World Championships because he has done such... It has been

:08:50.:08:55.

such a weak event and he has turned it into such a positive event. And

:08:55.:09:01.

here is the man himself. Thank you for coming to speak to us. Can you

:09:01.:09:07.

describe your emotions being back on the track after the ban?

:09:07.:09:12.

man! I wanted to knock some of them out. I feel good physically and now

:09:12.:09:18.

I am getting ready for the Worlds. What response to fill you have been

:09:18.:09:22.

getting from the crowd? Some people have strong feelings about what has

:09:22.:09:28.

happened? I just want to thanks .com person before inviting me to

:09:29.:09:36.

this meet. I need to work on a couple of things and get ready for

:09:36.:09:41.

the championships. People are a bit cynical about the reason for a

:09:41.:09:48.

positive test. What would you say to them? My mum, my team, they

:09:48.:09:53.

believed in me. They keep believing in me. I am clean, and likewise

:09:53.:09:58.

said, I am just getting ready for the World Championships. -- and

:09:58.:10:05.

like I said. You must feel like a contender? Yes, I never felt I

:10:05.:10:15.

wasn't. I can't complain. It is kind of chilly. No excuses. But I

:10:15.:10:21.

got it out. The other thing is, no drugs ban finished on 27th July.

:10:21.:10:27.

One year to go till the London Olympics. Do you get a sense of how

:10:27.:10:34.

that appeal might go? I am just keeping it up to got to figure that

:10:34.:10:39.

thing out. Right now, my focus is on the World Championships. And the

:10:39.:10:46.

title. I mentioned the event director, Rajne Soderberg, who is

:10:46.:10:54.

also the president at for the Euro meet. Caff are the ones who put the

:10:54.:10:59.

ban for athletes. -- they are the ones. We looked over the situation

:11:00.:11:05.

and we said, he has not put the sport in real disrepute with what

:11:05.:11:12.

he did. He has not been caught with any kind of doping substances in

:11:12.:11:18.

his car or anything else. So I think in this case, it is OK. I

:11:18.:11:24.

think we should let him run. Because the American Federation

:11:24.:11:27.

also let him compete in the World Championships, even though he was

:11:27.:11:32.

not able to compete in the trials, which is their strict rules for

:11:32.:11:38.

years and years. He was exempt, in this case. So that says something

:11:38.:11:41.

about the sports world and what it thinks about his specific case and

:11:41.:11:46.

that is why we decided he could run here.

:11:46.:11:51.

It is worth just clarifying the circumstances around these European

:11:51.:11:58.

meets. It was a court case that took place in Switzerland. They

:11:59.:12:03.

wanted to step back and realised they did not... It seemed to be

:12:03.:12:07.

like a cartel and they were ordering people that they shouldn't

:12:07.:12:13.

invite. They have eased back now and are abiding by the rules.

:12:13.:12:18.

said, Dwain Chambers has now not got an invitation? No, it is still

:12:18.:12:23.

going to be down to the meet directors to decide. Her a pretty

:12:23.:12:27.

dramatic start to events here in Stockholm. But plenty more to look

:12:27.:12:32.

forward to. Impossible to miss David Oliver.

:12:32.:12:35.

The American is the biggest and best when it comes to the 110-metre

:12:35.:12:42.

hurdles. The women's 800 metres will be

:12:42.:12:46.

competitive, as always, and features world's reigning champion

:12:46.:12:50.

Caster Semenya. And she's the quickest woman around

:12:50.:12:56.

on two legs at the moment. Carmelita Jeter runs her first race

:12:56.:13:00.

since the American trials. But these days, everybody plays

:13:00.:13:09.

second fiddle to the bold. It is Usain Bolt.

:13:09.:13:19.
:13:19.:13:26.

action, and just to remind you, we don't have control over the

:13:26.:13:35.

coverage, so we will show you what we can. Straight back on with the

:13:35.:13:45.
:13:45.:13:48.

action. There she is, the women's world champion. And there's Caster

:13:48.:13:54.

Semenya. She has had a tough time. It is going to be interesting to

:13:54.:14:04.
:14:04.:14:21.

there but the Russian championship is running 1.50 6.95. Look at how

:14:21.:14:27.

Sinclair has got right in. Andrianova is coming across, the

:14:27.:14:31.

pacemaker. Sinclair, she was 6th in the Olympic Games, only semi-

:14:31.:14:34.

finalist in the last world championships. She's gone right

:14:34.:14:39.

into the lead there. Klyuka is coming across, she was fourth in

:14:39.:14:47.

the Russian championships. Montano is in third place. Second place in

:14:47.:14:52.

the race proper. Look at Caster Semenya. She's right at the back of

:14:52.:14:56.

the field. That's the best way of describing her technique, she's

:14:56.:15:00.

lumbering round. She's so powerful and muscular. She's got a lot of

:15:00.:15:05.

hard running today because she's probably 15 metres behind Sinclair

:15:05.:15:09.

at the moment. Sinclair has sold has a good 10 or 12 metres on the

:15:09.:15:15.

entire pack. Sinclair was the only one who went with the pace. Klyuka

:15:15.:15:24.

is behind her and then you've got Montano. That big pack right behind

:15:24.:15:34.
:15:34.:15:36.

season. Didn't do very well in the world championships last year. With

:15:37.:15:41.

200m to go, completely dominating this race. If she's got the power

:15:41.:15:45.

to hang on to this, and one would expect she would have with the

:15:45.:15:55.
:15:55.:15:58.

winner over 1500m. There's a big gap. Certainly since Sinclair went

:15:58.:16:07.

off and it meant business. A big win for her. Akkaoui coming through

:16:07.:16:13.

to take second place. Santiusti in third place. No doubt about the

:16:13.:16:23.

winner. That signals a very good, solid performance by her. She

:16:23.:16:29.

really went with the pace. She was the only one that did at 400m. My

:16:29.:16:35.

goodness, his season's best to show the sort of form. What about Caster

:16:35.:16:41.

Semenya? Once again lumbering round. It really wasn't a very good

:16:41.:16:46.

performance at all. Very difficult to explain that. It's strange.

:16:46.:16:53.

Sinclair had the form of her life. It's a season's best. She ran a

:16:53.:16:58.

time trial there. Really impressive. There's a lot more in her tank. By

:16:58.:17:04.

contrast, Semenya never really left the back of the field. At times in

:17:04.:17:07.

the last 300 I thought you might do something special to come through,

:17:07.:17:12.

but it was nothing special. She will have run away outside two

:17:12.:17:15.

minutes. Her season is so inconsistent. It's astonishing. But

:17:15.:17:19.

Sinclair, she's the real deal and I think she might be a threat to the

:17:19.:17:24.

Russians come the World Championships. There's the line-up

:17:24.:17:34.
:17:34.:18:01.

That was surprising there, a great performance from Sinclair but

:18:01.:18:04.

disappointing from Caster Semenya. What happened in that race, you

:18:04.:18:11.

were so far off the pace? I don't know, I just felt heavy. It's one

:18:11.:18:18.

of those days, you know. I couldn't race. I know it has been a long

:18:18.:18:23.

time not running but from my side, I'm quite happy with the

:18:23.:18:28.

performance. Even though I didn't run the race I wanted to run. I was

:18:28.:18:35.

expecting to run faster but from the start I felt... I just felt a

:18:35.:18:40.

little bit heavy, so I just kept on going. Like I said before, if I've

:18:40.:18:44.

started the race I have to finish, I don't quit. I guess next time I

:18:44.:18:49.

will do well. I hope so. The World Championships coming up fast, you

:18:49.:18:53.

are defending your title. It's not the sort of performance you'd want

:18:53.:19:01.

leading up to that. The yeah, it's a little bit upsetting. I guess it

:19:01.:19:07.

wasn't my day. I just need to go back and train, that's all. Banks

:19:07.:19:15.

was speaking to us. -- thanks for speaking to worse. Yelena

:19:15.:19:18.

Isinbayeva in the pole vault later. The night before the main meeting

:19:18.:19:24.

they have a shot put competition, men and women's, in the square. We

:19:24.:19:30.

had a great men's shot put. Christian Cadwell winning that.

:19:30.:19:34.

They love that competition. Absolutely. What is fascinating to

:19:34.:19:38.

me is that is as good as it is going to get in the world

:19:38.:19:44.

championships. It's a great performance, incredible. That

:19:44.:19:47.

wasn't a Diamond League competition but the women's was. Let's catch up

:19:47.:19:57.
:19:57.:20:04.

for the competition. This is similar to the sort of thing that

:20:04.:20:13.

happens in Manchester. Third place was the US competitor. Followed

:20:13.:20:18.

Aynho thrown in the first round with 19.87 in the second to gain

:20:18.:20:25.

third place. Only two valid throws in this series. Second best was

:20:26.:20:35.
:20:36.:20:39.

19.57. Ostapchuk was second. Look at that, nice, linear technique.

:20:39.:20:47.

That's a big throw. Well over 20 metres. 20.37. But couldn't hold

:20:47.:20:53.

off this woman. Valerie Adams, of New Zealand. She prevailed again,

:20:53.:20:58.

the twice world champion, the Olympic champion. She opened with

:20:58.:21:05.

19.59 and in round two, 20.57. She's So tall and bayed and has

:21:05.:21:08.

such long levers and such power that she is going to be very

:21:08.:21:12.

difficult to beat in those world championships. She is an

:21:12.:21:22.
:21:22.:21:42.

ahead of the rest, but remember Stockholm, but special thoughts

:21:42.:21:46.

with Thorkildsen, the reigning world and Olympic champion, he's

:21:46.:21:50.

drawing tonight. We hope things go well for him. The women's 100m

:21:50.:21:55.

coming up next with Carmelita Jeter, the fastest woman in the world, the

:21:55.:21:59.

second fastest woman of all time. Before that, let's talk about Jody

:21:59.:22:02.

Williams and double gold in the European Junior Championships.

:22:02.:22:06.

was named the athlete of the meat. It's another great accolade for her.

:22:06.:22:12.

Great personal best in that 100m. 11.18. As a youngster, she's not

:22:12.:22:20.

really out there on her own. There's an American young lady out

:22:20.:22:25.

there who has run at 11.02. She will know it's going to be tough

:22:25.:22:28.

out there when it comes to those head-to-head competitions with

:22:28.:22:35.

people her own age. It's interesting, she's chosen not to go

:22:35.:22:43.

for the World Championships. How I think it's a good idea. She

:22:43.:22:50.

doesn't need to put herself under that kind of pressure. A major gold

:22:50.:22:54.

this year was to do the European juniors, get those doubles under

:22:54.:22:58.

her belt. Once she's achieved that, she can concentrate on her school

:22:58.:23:03.

work. She has gained experience already from the senior

:23:03.:23:07.

championships, the European indoors, something we have always said is a

:23:07.:23:11.

great championships. She was successful there, running a

:23:11.:23:14.

personal best. For me, I think it's a wise decision. She's got plenty

:23:15.:23:20.

of years in front of her to really shine. Some would say, though, the

:23:20.:23:23.

World Championships is as close as it gets to an Olympic Games. She

:23:23.:23:27.

bit mature next year come 20 tow, it might have been good to go and

:23:27.:23:31.

feel what it was like at a big competition. The European indoors

:23:31.:23:34.

are great for athletes but very different from an outdoor world

:23:34.:23:39.

championships. Absolutely, and I understand what people may say. But

:23:39.:23:43.

the true experience you gain from going out in a semi-final, it's not

:23:43.:23:47.

necessarily for her. She's already been very successful. We know what

:23:47.:23:53.

she's capable of doing. For me, it's just taking a little bit of a

:23:53.:23:56.

balance and looking forward to next year. The pressure is off, she can

:23:56.:24:00.

just train, another winter behind her. I think she will raise her

:24:00.:24:05.

game yet again. The women's 100m coming up shortly, but let's catch

:24:05.:24:15.
:24:15.:24:27.

up with what happened in the and then a meeting record. She

:24:27.:24:30.

ended up the third on countback when that best jump was equalled

:24:31.:24:34.

that the very best next jump. Here, you can see the second place,

:24:34.:24:42.

Savigne, the world champion in 2007 and 2009. 14.87. She almost went

:24:42.:24:52.
:24:52.:24:59.

further but the early effort last year. Bounding out in her

:24:59.:25:03.

first Diamond League meeting. She lost to so been in Oslo and Paris

:25:04.:25:13.
:25:14.:25:30.

but her first Diamond League win, 100m. We've just seen Carmelita

:25:30.:25:36.

Jeter introduced to the crowd. It's going to be a fast race, Colin.

:25:36.:25:41.

hope it's going to be a super fast race. We are looking at three women

:25:41.:25:46.

who've gone under 11 seconds this year. They are going to go head-to-

:25:46.:25:54.

head. It's a good indicator for us of what 100 Mr Shaikh per jete is

:25:54.:25:57.

in. The first race back after the year's championships, I'm

:25:57.:26:07.
:26:07.:26:07.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:26:07.:27:10.

interested to see how she takes on got away very well. Myers going

:27:10.:27:20.
:27:20.:27:20.

strongly. Jeter moving towards the middle. The time, 11.14. Jete

:27:20.:27:28.

really held on in the end. That was some performance by Carmelita Jeter.

:27:29.:27:35.

It went very much with the form book. Myers got away well and so

:27:35.:27:41.

did Stewart. Yes, it took a little while to really catch up and move

:27:41.:27:46.

ahead from the athlete to her left, Myers, who had a really strong run,

:27:46.:27:49.

considering they are running in such a strong headwind that is not

:27:49.:27:59.
:27:59.:28:04.

it's going pretty much to form. Carmelita Jeter, I have heard down

:28:04.:28:08.

as a favourite for the World Championships at 100m. There might

:28:08.:28:13.

be one or two other athletes who like to see -- say a thing or two

:28:13.:28:22.

about that, including Campbell of Jamaica. Nobody would break 11

:28:22.:28:27.

seconds in those conditions. She is very dominant at the moment. She

:28:27.:28:31.

showed great fortitude at the final stages of the race. She must have

:28:31.:28:41.
:28:41.:28:47.

sensed Myers coming up under her Thorkildsen in this javelin

:28:47.:28:57.
:28:57.:29:01.

me! First round, best effort so far. 78 metres by Vesely of the Czech

:29:01.:29:07.

Republic. But De Zordo, and usually a left-handed thrower, really hits

:29:07.:29:16.

that hard. It's about 83 metres. Not a bad open at all. 83.14. He's

:29:16.:29:26.
:29:26.:29:29.

Who is going to be taking the 200 metres? It will probably be Bolt.

:29:29.:29:36.

But next, we have the men's steeplechase. It was explosive

:29:36.:29:41.

blast time when it took place in Monaco at the last Diamond League

:29:41.:29:51.
:29:51.:29:55.

A number British record for Mo Farah! A great run by Pearson.

:29:55.:30:02.

will be another British record. that is the Angelo Taylor that we

:30:02.:30:08.

note coming into a major championship. Very clean clearance

:30:08.:30:17.

from a Vlasic. That is more like it! A beautiful looking runner.

:30:17.:30:21.

Look how strong she is. Look at the form she holds down the long

:30:21.:30:31.
:30:31.:30:56.

world's best. But he smashes it. This is a big, big win for her.

:30:56.:31:01.

quite as good has he wants yet but certainly good enough to take the

:31:01.:31:07.

lead. Kiplagat. He beat the Olympic champion in his own national

:31:07.:31:14.

championships and now he has been in a very good field. Oh, my

:31:14.:31:19.

goodness! What is going on? That is not... I do not think I have ever,

:31:19.:31:26.

ever seen that at an athletics meeting. Look how hard Usain Bolt

:31:26.:31:36.
:31:36.:31:41.

is working. That is quick, very And it's hard to believe that all

:31:41.:31:47.

happened in one meeting! Lot of great athletics to talk about, but

:31:47.:31:51.

let's talk about the scrap, which I hope you should never see on an

:31:51.:31:57.

athletics track. Yes, it was so strange to see. When I heard it was

:31:57.:32:02.

taking place, I could not believe what I was seeing. It is unheard of

:32:02.:32:06.

and I would hope French athletics will not take this seriously, the

:32:06.:32:11.

account of what happened. And I think they should have some sort of

:32:11.:32:19.

punishment, both of them are. have been apologetic, haven't they?

:32:19.:32:25.

Yes, but if you have a disagreement, just taken outside of the athletics

:32:25.:32:30.

stadium. We don't need to see it there. We next have the

:32:30.:32:35.

steeplechase and that was probably the event of the meet there?

:32:35.:32:39.

know, of all the results that night, that was the most surprising. I

:32:39.:32:49.
:32:49.:32:50.

know how incredibly talented he is, and we are not used to seeing a

:32:50.:33:00.
:33:00.:33:01.

seven, eight-minute steeple race. Now, not so. It was breathtaking. I

:33:01.:33:04.

am looking forward to the worlds to see who can attack that world

:33:04.:33:13.

record. A lot of analysis of how well Usain Bolt is run in. His

:33:13.:33:19.

Susan's best, nine point 98, but only just winning. You are right,

:33:19.:33:29.

only just winning. There's many, many athletes out there who might

:33:29.:33:34.

believe that they are not at their best but still a world leader. It

:33:34.:33:40.

will be interesting how he feels going into this World Championships.

:33:40.:33:50.
:33:50.:33:55.

We will see him later on and find has been one of their favourites

:33:55.:34:01.

over the years. Now, where has that gone? A long way, by the look of it.

:34:01.:34:05.

That shows you that this fellow, when it comes to championships, so

:34:05.:34:12.

difficult. He has got gold or silver at every Olympic, world or

:34:12.:34:19.

European Championships sings in 2004. He has been a Olympic, world

:34:19.:34:24.

and European champion. He sits in his hotel and has a little beer

:34:24.:34:34.
:34:34.:34:36.

here or there. He enjoys himself. Let's look at the British

:34:36.:34:44.

performance in Monaco. Mo Farah, once again, Supreme. Dare I say it.

:34:44.:34:49.

It is good to see he believes he is the full package. You can see it

:34:49.:34:53.

when he goes on to the track. They are taking very seriously and they

:34:53.:34:57.

know he is full of Thailand. We have seen it from a young age and

:34:57.:35:06.

we have been waiting for it to come through. -- full of talent.

:35:06.:35:13.

transformation has been quite... Almost unbelievable? Yes. Winning

:35:13.:35:17.

two titles at the European Championships - what that has done

:35:17.:35:22.

for him is unbelievable. It has given him belief and self belief in

:35:22.:35:25.

athletics is a strong thing to happen under you. To know that you

:35:25.:35:29.

were doing the right thing and not to care what anybody else is saying,

:35:29.:35:33.

to note it is the right thing for you. Mo Farah has proved that is

:35:33.:35:40.

what has happened for him. I am really pleased for him. Now he is

:35:40.:35:47.

where he is now. And he could have a shout at a bronze medal? Yes. If

:35:47.:35:54.

you remember, lots of times, we always say, a new record but not

:35:54.:35:59.

quite the personal best. But we will be seeing Jessica Ennis at the

:35:59.:36:09.
:36:09.:36:13.

weekend. And the other race, where Angelo Taylor did so well? Yes, and

:36:13.:36:23.
:36:23.:36:23.

he has done so well here as well. He still actually has something to

:36:23.:36:32.

prove to himself, does dive. He will understand that when you go at

:36:32.:36:39.

one major championship, you start at zero. -- does dyed green. Don't

:36:40.:36:48.

write him off for a medal, or even a gold medal. His technique is so

:36:48.:36:55.

good and so is his mind set. I do not think he will be deflected?

:36:55.:37:00.

But he is one of these people who is quite aggressive. He knows he

:37:00.:37:04.

wants to win championships and knows he is capable of going under

:37:04.:37:08.

14 seconds. When you can get under that magical barrier, anything is

:37:09.:37:13.

possible. I believe he is in great shape and he has been more

:37:13.:37:18.

consistent than anything else. So as far as I am concerned, I take my

:37:18.:37:22.

hat off to him. He has worked hard to put himself in a good position

:37:22.:37:27.

for this year and next. Let's go out and join the action with the

:37:27.:37:37.
:37:37.:37:48.

even better. I tell you what. Mitchell Watt, a best of 8.44, and

:37:48.:37:55.

he is spot on the board. And that looked to be over 80 metres. 8.59

:37:55.:38:00.

is the meeting record set by Ivan Pedro's of. It might not be that

:38:00.:38:10.
:38:10.:38:13.

far but it could be. What has he got? A new personal best, 8.54.

:38:13.:38:23.
:38:23.:38:24.

Just short of that 1997 meeting record by Ivan Pedroso. Brilliant

:38:24.:38:31.

stuff. And it Saladino has to follow that. The Olympic champion.

:38:31.:38:37.

The world champion back in Osaka. He has been indoors and out, and

:38:37.:38:43.

successful at both. But really, Mitchell Watt, he powered down that

:38:43.:38:47.

runway. Totally different stature to Saladino, but he has an edge

:38:48.:38:56.

which is quite impressive. What can Saladino do? And that's just over

:38:56.:39:02.

eight and looks better. It has certainly got the white flag. Now,

:39:02.:39:12.

Crowther has got into second place. Saladino's best so far, 8.03. What

:39:12.:39:18.

has he got? Lots of lift off the board and good control in the air.

:39:18.:39:26.

A little word with his coaches along the side. What's he done?

:39:26.:39:36.

8.19. That is better. He is in second place. Wow! Well, this

:39:36.:39:43.

steeplechase, they have gone through. In third place is Kiplagat

:39:43.:39:53.
:39:53.:39:59.

and it is building up nicely. now the second round of the javelin.

:39:59.:40:04.

And that is just short of 85, and that's a very, very good

:40:04.:40:14.
:40:14.:40:23.

performance. He has had 81.4 p 7. - - 81.47. What has he done? He is

:40:23.:40:32.

now in second. 84.21. This man has to be hungry to prove what he could

:40:32.:40:42.
:40:42.:40:42.

have done. Not even a place in the Kenyan team after that poor, poor

:40:42.:40:48.

run in Nairobi. These two are building up a sizable lead.

:40:48.:40:57.

Kiplagat in second. Koech knows he is hurting the man behind him,

:40:57.:41:05.

doing a lot of damage. And Kipchoge back in third place. But 40, maybe

:41:05.:41:11.

50 metres down. This really is a measure of just how hard Koech is

:41:11.:41:19.

going. That is interesting. Koech puts his foot on it. Most of the

:41:19.:41:28.

Kenyans Clairette, like a 400-metre hurdle, and fly over it. -- most of

:41:28.:41:38.
:41:38.:41:40.

the Kenyans clear it. The strength of the little man. He begins to

:41:40.:41:50.
:41:50.:41:54.

move clear. The fastest man in history, Paul Koech. Now into the

:41:54.:42:04.
:42:04.:42:07.

back straight. 15, 20 metres. He is pouring yet in. A couple of slow

:42:07.:42:17.
:42:17.:42:19.

laps in the middle section, but maybe the win was not the priority.

:42:19.:42:29.
:42:29.:42:30.

He has opened up 20 metres. Over this last lap. The final barrier,

:42:30.:42:36.

and it is going to be a very comfortable win, as expected. The

:42:36.:42:41.

time is not going to be too bad at all. It is outside eight minutes,

:42:41.:42:51.
:42:51.:42:51.

but quick nonetheless. It is somewhere outside that meeting

:42:51.:42:57.

record that he said four years ago, but nonetheless, a truly dominant

:42:57.:43:01.

run and more confirmation of how dominant the Kenyans are in this

:43:01.:43:04.

discipline generally. When you think he was 7th in the

:43:04.:43:09.

championships a couple of weeks back? Yes, and thinking back to

:43:09.:43:19.
:43:19.:43:19.

Monaco. We watched Kipruto hammered out a very fine steeplechase.

:43:19.:43:26.

And another huge throw! He turned away from it. He knew that was good.

:43:26.:43:32.

Really moved into it, hit in very, very hard. He is the champion and

:43:32.:43:38.

that is a big, big throw. He is moving way out into the lead. That

:43:38.:43:48.

is his Susan's best. 88.4 D 34 Andreas Thorkildsen. -- season's

:43:48.:43:52.

best. He is getting better and better and will be very difficult

:43:52.:43:59.

to beat. And now Koech, third in that super

:43:59.:44:06.

braise in Monaco. He went under eight minutes. -- in that superb at

:44:06.:44:16.
:44:16.:44:18.

race. Another good win. It is very blustery out there and may have had

:44:18.:44:28.
:44:28.:44:32.

an effect on them. But nevertheless, A special performance there from

:44:32.:44:35.

Thorkildsen in the javelin. Next on the track, this man's favourite

:44:35.:44:40.

event, the hurdles. It features David Oliver Paul Stout hears an

:44:40.:44:44.

insight into the things he likes and the things he doesn't. Hello,

:44:44.:44:48.

I'm David Oliver, her love for the United States. I don't have any bad

:44:48.:44:52.

habits, you might have to ask somebody else about that one. The

:44:52.:44:56.

last time I had junk food was about five minutes ago. It felt good

:44:56.:45:03.

going down. If I wasn't an athlete I would probably be a firefighter

:45:03.:45:08.

wherever I lived at. That's something I want to pursue when I

:45:08.:45:18.
:45:18.:45:18.

One of track and Field's real characters. The disappointing thing

:45:18.:45:23.

about this evening is we had expected the head to head but when

:45:23.:45:27.

him and Dayron Robles, but Robles has this not at the moment of

:45:27.:45:31.

getting injured. The yes, he seems to be a bit fragile at the moment.

:45:31.:45:34.

But he's protecting himself because they're rather major championships

:45:34.:45:41.

that he wants to go out and win. Dayron Robles injured himself in

:45:41.:45:46.

Barcelona. He hit his foot but he's still hoping to be in London. We

:45:46.:45:52.

will see the big clash hopefully in London. And very close in Paris,

:45:52.:45:59.

wasn't it? Paris was a brace indeed. I always love watching that type of

:45:59.:46:03.

competition. You have two complete the different runners technically.

:46:03.:46:08.

David is far more aggressive, Dayron is far more fluid and

:46:08.:46:12.

natural as a hurdler. To get to that line and not be able to call

:46:12.:46:19.

the victor was a great thing to see. Adding to that the Chinese athlete.

:46:19.:46:26.

We've got a really hot race that I'm anticipating. It could be one

:46:26.:46:31.

of the great races, the three of them all looking 12.9, running

:46:31.:46:35.

incredibly quickly. As someone who knows this event Inside Out, where

:46:35.:46:42.

would you analyse the strengths and weaknesses? Who is going to blink

:46:42.:46:47.

their -- first? You have three completely different hurdlers. Luge

:46:47.:46:52.

Yang is more of a crafted hurdler. He's been crafted and he's very

:46:52.:46:57.

effective. I love that about him. Then you have David, or aggression,

:46:57.:47:02.

he's big, strong and fast. He loves going at those hurdles. Next to

:47:02.:47:07.

that you've got the floater, Dayron Robles, who takes the event in his

:47:08.:47:13.

stride. There's absolutely nothing you can call. You choose your

:47:13.:47:17.

technique. But if you are asking me to put some money down on the

:47:17.:47:22.

victor, I would go for the Chinese competitor up. He is so perfectly

:47:22.:47:26.

technically great. That's the reason why I'm going for him. When

:47:26.:47:30.

you are under pressure, when the real pressure is on as you are

:47:30.:47:31.

real pressure is on as you are coming to the final barriers,

:47:31.:47:35.

that's when you rely on the technique. Because he has been

:47:35.:47:36.

technique. Because he has been drilled so well, I'm leaning

:47:36.:47:41.

towards him at this moment. That said, David Oliver had a great

:47:41.:47:45.

season last year and he's been running well again this year. The

:47:45.:47:48.

other two have injury issues. Perhaps they might be a bit rusty.

:47:48.:47:52.

Oliver is the one who has the consistent form, the confidence

:47:52.:47:57.

that we talked about. That is very true. The beauty of hurdles is when

:47:57.:48:02.

you Trai you can Alter the distance between hurdles to absolutely get

:48:02.:48:07.

an accurate reading, how you will be at different parts of the race.

:48:07.:48:13.

You can prepare very easily without racing. That's why am still leaning

:48:13.:48:21.

towards Agen, even though we haven't seen him raise too much.

:48:21.:48:27.

It's going to be tight but I think that it's still him. I'm really

:48:27.:48:33.

calling him. Let's play fantasy 110m hurdles. At their very best,

:48:33.:48:38.

in the perfect race, he would go the fastest and where could they

:48:38.:48:44.

put the record? The perfect race, everything going on. Because of the

:48:44.:48:48.

natural ability of Robles, I would call him. He's the current world

:48:48.:48:52.

record holder. If he stayed completely injury-free, he could

:48:52.:48:58.

lower the world record to around 12.80. Because he's such a

:48:58.:49:03.

naturally fluent hurdler. But, unfortunately, as we've seen, he's

:49:03.:49:08.

very fragile. That is what has set him back. Because you still need to

:49:08.:49:15.

keep her bling as much as you can to progress in the event. -- keep

:49:15.:49:25.
:49:25.:49:28.

hurdling. Can you expect something quick tonight? Yes. If you think

:49:28.:49:34.

about what can be done. I'm looking... The conditions on a

:49:34.:49:39.

little bit chilly but I think he could get to 19.7 mark. He's more

:49:39.:49:44.

than capable of doing that. But what a luxury to be nearly half a

:49:44.:49:50.

second off your best and still be a world leader. Fantastic for him.

:49:50.:49:55.

Diamond is on offer for a stadium record, to a certain Michael

:49:55.:50:00.

Johnson. I think he'd like to take that record - for good reason!

:50:00.:50:05.

old Michael, Usain Bolt taking every single record that he's got.

:50:05.:50:11.

Yes, but life moves on. Even one day your record will go. Bad news

:50:11.:50:21.
:50:21.:50:22.

for you there! Let's go to the tonight but married macro is

:50:23.:50:29.

running very well indeed. -- Merritt. David looked very

:50:29.:50:34.

comfortable in qualifying. He ran 13.38 to qualify for this final. He

:50:34.:50:37.

knows all his big American opponents. With that in mind, he

:50:37.:50:41.

should take a comfortable victory. He'll be disappointed that Robles

:50:41.:50:46.

isn't here. That could be a bit of a downside. When you prepare

:50:47.:50:49.

yourself for a head-to-head competition at all of a sudden

:50:50.:50:53.

you're major rival this appears, you can slightly lower your mental

:50:53.:50:58.

state. That could be tricky in this event. But he would want to put one

:50:59.:51:04.

on all of these guys and show why he is the number one American and

:51:04.:51:09.

white he possibly could take this title. -- why he could possibly

:51:10.:51:17.

take this title. The conditions here, into a headwind. What kind of

:51:17.:51:21.

effect does that have on the hurdlers? Judging between hurdles

:51:21.:51:26.

cover the distance is very important. Someone like David is

:51:26.:51:30.

very big and strong, he is fine. He can open up his stride and make it

:51:30.:51:40.

a bit more aggressive and closer to a sprint stride. We can look for

:51:40.:51:49.

him running pretty quickly. They are a very different build. Yes,

:51:49.:51:54.

Merritt is very spider like. He took my metre record. This man we

:51:54.:52:00.

are about to see, Richardson, he actually beat Merritt in the

:52:00.:52:04.

qualification round and round it very well indeed, 13.20. Watch out

:52:04.:52:11.

for him also. The men's 110m hurdles. Back over to tame and

:52:11.:52:21.
:52:21.:52:34.

big man, a rugged, dynamic, in total contrast to Dayron Robles. He

:52:34.:52:40.

has such a powerful technique. Hit hurdles and he can get into trouble.

:52:40.:52:45.

That's been proven in the past. Unbeaten last year, he really was

:52:45.:52:55.
:52:55.:53:32.

well. Oliver is coming back at him. Richardson has got it. Oliver in

:53:32.:53:38.

second place. In lane three was Thomas. Its 13.17. What a scalp

:53:38.:53:43.

that was by this man. He won his heat in 13.20. I have a Phelan

:53:43.:53:47.

David Oliver really wasn't looking with great edge. Jason Richardson

:53:47.:53:52.

of the United States of America. He was third in the American trials.

:53:52.:53:57.

Have a look at this. He got away brilliantly. Makes room for the

:53:57.:54:01.

hurdles well. His trail leg his quick. Look at the way in which

:54:01.:54:06.

David Oliver is hitting hurdles, trying to get his technique and the

:54:06.:54:11.

them back. He never recovered from a dreadful start, David Oliver.

:54:11.:54:19.

13.17 for Richardson, his personal best is only 13.15. That was into a

:54:19.:54:29.
:54:29.:54:32.

headwind. Now all over to the pole character. It is the one and only

:54:32.:54:42.
:54:42.:54:46.

to me. That wouldn't have done her confidence any good at all. I think

:54:47.:54:51.

she should have come in for a sighting of vault, something to get

:54:51.:55:01.
:55:01.:55:05.

She is not alone. The only difference is that she hasn't

:55:05.:55:11.

cleared a single high to get. at the hurdles again. I'm very

:55:11.:55:16.

impressed with Jason Richardson, second from the left. He really is

:55:16.:55:21.

a fluent hurdler. Terrific read them. That trail leg is as good as

:55:21.:55:25.

I've seen. It's so fast. That means that the lead leg comes down quick,

:55:25.:55:30.

too. He attacks the hurdle brilliantly. Leaning into the

:55:30.:55:34.

hurdles. Look at the way David Oliver is hitting hurdles, trying

:55:34.:55:42.

to come back at him. Merritt is under pressure as well. Just a

:55:42.:55:47.

couple of hundreds of his personal best into a headwind. Watch out for

:55:47.:55:57.
:55:57.:56:23.

him in the championships because Impressive it was and a bit of a

:56:23.:56:26.

shock, David Oliver alongside us now. Not the result we were

:56:26.:56:33.

expecting. Talk us through the race. I got a decent start but I hit the

:56:33.:56:39.

number four Hurdle. It knocked me out of the race with them. It's one

:56:39.:56:47.

of those things that happens. I've just got to get a bit better. I'm

:56:47.:56:51.

getting ready for next week in London. The fact you didn't have

:56:51.:56:55.

Robles in the race, was that in any way a lack of concentration on your

:56:55.:56:59.

part because you thought you'd probably win it anyway? Whenever

:56:59.:57:03.

you go into a race you can't really think you are going to win. There's

:57:03.:57:08.

always a high level of talent in these races. I did what I could. At

:57:08.:57:12.

the end of the day it just wasn't good enough. What about the head

:57:12.:57:16.

wind, the fact you hit a hurdle with a head wind made it more

:57:16.:57:20.

penalising. I'm not sure. It's the same headwind for everybody in the

:57:20.:57:24.

field, you can't really use that as an excuse. I didn't run up to my

:57:24.:57:33.

level today. I just need to get a Very equitable about it but a bit

:57:34.:57:38.

of a shock none the less. Yes, it was interesting what David said.

:57:38.:57:40.

was interesting what David said. Sometimes when you do not have

:57:40.:57:46.

quite the right rhythm then it does completely knock you off. I saw

:57:46.:57:49.

Andy Turner suffered from the same thing a couple of times at major

:57:49.:57:55.

championships. But David seems to not be in the group today. That can

:57:55.:58:01.

have a real detrimental effect. You Sky hurdles at it and the next one

:58:01.:58:09.

you end up hitting. This can happen. It still was a sensational run by

:58:09.:58:13.

Jason. A tremendous performance. A very strong headwind and a great

:58:13.:58:17.

time. It does kind of signify that he could possibly, in good

:58:17.:58:21.

conditions, get under that magical 13 second barrier, which would put

:58:21.:58:26.

him right in the frame for a gold medal. We talked about the big

:58:26.:58:31.

three. Potentially four now. Absolutely. No doubt. Someone like

:58:31.:58:35.

Andy Turner would watch that and think to himself, there's

:58:35.:58:38.

competition all the way through, not only with the big three. It's

:58:38.:58:42.

going to be tight, we've always said that. But when you go to win

:58:42.:58:47.

championships, everything kind of changes. Talking about David

:58:47.:58:50.

Oliver's mental approach, even though he denied it was the case,

:58:50.:58:54.

if you are expecting a head to head and you think it's just the two of

:58:54.:58:58.

you, sometimes you can sometimes subconsciously take your foot off

:58:59.:59:02.

the gas. Yes, the edge comes off because all day you been preparing

:59:02.:59:06.

for this big clash and then all of a sudden someone sweeps your legs

:59:06.:59:11.

away. You don't need to worry about that any more. So you do come to --

:59:11.:59:15.

start to come down a little bit. Let's see what happens in London.

:59:15.:59:18.

He will get back to training and get back in that group, and I'm

:59:18.:59:22.

pretty sure we will see the 13th second barrier when broken a couple

:59:22.:59:27.

of times again. The countdown continues to Usain Bolt in the 200m.

:59:27.:59:37.
:59:37.:59:46.

is flying! It is gold for Bolt, and again, he has done it again!

:59:46.:59:56.
:59:56.:00:01.

about that. But we have mentioned it. The question marks still

:00:01.:00:07.

persist. At his press conference at Stockholm here, he did sound more

:00:07.:00:11.

upbeat than previously? Well, we will run in Paris that he was a

:00:11.:00:17.

little bit under the weather. He had that cold. He ran quite

:00:17.:00:21.

comfortably but then he had to come back to Monaco and have a race

:00:21.:00:27.

under his belt. He has always been tested and come out on top. Today,

:00:27.:00:32.

he is in his favoured distance, the 200 metres, and I think he will

:00:32.:00:36.

want to silence a lot of the doubt. People have been saying, you might

:00:37.:00:45.

not be in great shape... By the victories are the most important

:00:45.:00:53.

thing. He said that, didn't he? It is about titles, not times. Was

:00:53.:01:00.

that a bit of expectation management? He just wants people

:01:00.:01:04.

not to be disappointed if body cannot do those times he did in

:01:04.:01:11.

Berlin? It is all for four in. Everybody expect him to produce

:01:11.:01:16.

these sensational performances whenever he runs. And when he looks

:01:16.:01:22.

at the clock, he looks disappointed. I wonder if he should switch off

:01:22.:01:31.

the clock when he runs and just run his best. Let's catch up with

:01:31.:01:41.
:01:41.:01:48.

coaches now, Isinbayeva. Ooh, it is going to stay, it is going to stave.

:01:49.:01:58.
:01:59.:01:59.

She is there. She has got it. I say! That was close. Almost did a

:01:59.:02:07.

full twist at the top. That was survival! It may be the best on

:02:07.:02:12.

paper, but, my goodness, a lot of work to do before she get back to

:02:12.:02:22.
:02:22.:02:24.

those five-metre vaults. 5.6, the world record, set in Zurich.

:02:24.:02:34.
:02:34.:02:34.

Here's the men's start list for the 1,500 metres. A good sprinkling of

:02:34.:02:43.

Kenyans in there. Kiplagat of Kenya, the fastest in the field so far

:02:43.:02:53.
:02:53.:02:57.

this year. OK. Now to your commentators.

:02:57.:03:07.
:03:07.:03:19.

There is Silas Kiplagat. He ran 3:29 in Monaco. We are looking for

:03:19.:03:28.

1: 51 in the first stretch. Just looking at the flags to our right.

:03:28.:03:37.

Just for the moment, a lull in the wind. A big field, 15 men, who head

:03:38.:03:47.
:03:48.:03:57.

into the first bend. A very good season already for David. Kiprop is

:03:57.:04:05.

in great shape after that 800 metres in Monaco last week. The

:04:05.:04:11.

main pack, not much inside 43. A little bit slower than they might

:04:11.:04:21.
:04:21.:04:25.

have wanted. Yes, it is interesting. As memories go back to Monaco and

:04:25.:04:32.

that wonderful race between Kiplagat and the Beijing Olympic

:04:32.:04:40.

Games champion. Assuming we see the Kiprop we want to see, because he

:04:40.:04:46.

has had some erratic performances this season. And slightly erratic

:04:46.:04:53.

pacemaking as well. It was not good. It is slow. He knew the pack would

:04:53.:05:00.

be behind him by around a second, a second and a half. They come

:05:00.:05:08.

through below us now. There's a ten-metre gap and it is

:05:08.:05:11.

disappointing because the wind is not strong in the arena at the

:05:11.:05:17.

moment. As they go through 800 metres they are in the back

:05:17.:05:24.

straight. Still no takers from the pack. You cannot blame the

:05:24.:05:29.

pacemakers all the time. If the pact choose not to go with it, very

:05:29.:05:37.

but what can be done. Now, Chepseba at the front there. Just beginning

:05:37.:05:42.

to move through in the white and blue. A lot of bodies in the middle

:05:42.:05:50.

of the pack there. And it has been slow up to 800 metres. They now

:05:50.:05:54.

come into the straight, and Willis just beginning to move into a good

:05:54.:06:04.
:06:04.:06:08.

position. They get the final at Split. Ndiku, looking very, very

:06:09.:06:13.

comfortable, and just looking behind him. It is anybody's race,

:06:13.:06:23.
:06:23.:06:28.

this. Look out for the Australian, Jeffrey Riseley. Oh, my God! Ndiku

:06:28.:06:36.

palls beside and does it slowly. Into the final 200 metres and this

:06:36.:06:42.

really has turned into a test. It is a test of 300 metres. It has not

:06:42.:06:50.

been a test of 1,500 metres at all. It has been a strong run from

:06:50.:07:00.
:07:00.:07:07.

Kiplagat. He is really going away here. That, well... It just

:07:07.:07:10.

indicates with splits that were quite lumbering by the standards of

:07:10.:07:14.

these men. They could have gone several seconds quicker for my

:07:14.:07:19.

money. But you get into this frame of mind where you expect the

:07:19.:07:24.

pacemakers to lay down a quick- tempered all the time. Perhaps the

:07:24.:07:27.

time should be of secondary performance and it is just great

:07:27.:07:34.

racing that we should be witnessing. We have the tall figure coming past

:07:34.:07:40.

Willis there. A repeat of the result in Monaco. And Kiplagat, as

:07:41.:07:48.

you say, is there such a consistent performer. His time follows that of

:07:48.:07:57.

Monaco. A very, very good season. He was 4th in Shanghai. Not a great

:07:57.:08:04.

mile there, but to have the world rankings with of that time for

:08:04.:08:10.

Monica, absolutely superb. He has done it again, two in succession.

:08:10.:08:14.

Nothing particularly special about his finishing speed bomber last 300

:08:14.:08:24.
:08:24.:08:29.

metres. Willis thought he could have Kiplagat but he couldn't.

:08:29.:08:39.
:08:39.:08:47.

performance indeed. That is from Barsham Ahmed. He runs in a very

:08:47.:08:56.

wide and just turns in, drives money. A lovely technique. So light.

:08:56.:09:06.
:09:06.:09:12.

-- drives in his knee. So, five men clear at 2.30. Well, we have this

:09:12.:09:21.

woman in a bit of trouble. That is Brathwaite. Struggling at 4.64.

:09:21.:09:31.
:09:31.:09:43.

Richardson. Jason, a fantastic race. How much of that was a surprise to

:09:43.:09:48.

you? It was not so much of his surprise. I have put everything

:09:48.:09:53.

into my training. This is what we are trying to do. I have one of the

:09:53.:09:58.

best coaches in the world. Lots of people talking about 110-metre

:09:58.:10:06.

hurdles as a big event. We have those three big names, in with

:10:06.:10:12.

David Oliver. Perhaps now a fourth? They have the credentials and have

:10:12.:10:21.

done the hard work. I just hope I can get in there ahead of them.

:10:21.:10:27.

Congratulations. Thank you so much. A really outstanding victory for

:10:27.:10:32.

Jason Richardson in the 110-metre hurdles. Now we go to the men's

:10:32.:10:39.

discus competition. COMMENTATOR: De wind three was

:10:39.:10:49.
:10:49.:10:50.

gusting around this afternoon. -- the wind was gusting around. This

:10:50.:10:56.

was his best effort by over a metre. Some consolation for no mark in his

:10:56.:11:05.

last Diamond League in Paris. This man from Poland ended up in second

:11:05.:11:12.

place. He opened with a narrow throat and then gave three

:11:12.:11:22.
:11:22.:11:22.

consecutive throws over 64 metres. This was round for and that is big.

:11:22.:11:32.

-- round four. When the winner was the Lithuanian. 39 years old. He

:11:32.:11:41.

took that in round three. Double Olympic champion, both in 20021004,

:11:41.:11:51.
:11:51.:11:55.

and their world champion. One of the greats in this event. -- both

:11:55.:12:05.
:12:05.:12:13.

the discus competition. Lawrence. He is ranked four in the world. A

:12:13.:12:20.

huge, huge find. Yes. He took up this sport 18 months ago, and what

:12:20.:12:27.

a surprise. Everybody who has seen him, has said, physically, what a

:12:27.:12:32.

man mountain. I am looking forward to seeing him at the trials. I

:12:32.:12:37.

think he is going to tower over everybody. A great thing to see,

:12:38.:12:43.

the emergence of talent in new events, because we never really had

:12:43.:12:48.

a true world class male discus thrower. This is a great sign for

:12:48.:12:55.

us. I don't think we have won discus in the 100 years of the

:12:55.:13:02.

Olympic Games. The women have of. Now we have four a great athlete.

:13:02.:13:11.

Yes. All we can ask for is to have a great level domestically. And

:13:11.:13:15.

then it pushes everything else up. Then we are going to have great

:13:15.:13:20.

trials, which we normally don't see outside of Germany, for example. It

:13:20.:13:25.

is an exciting moment in time in athletics. And to come so far in

:13:25.:13:30.

such a short period of time, Lawrence. We always talk about

:13:30.:13:36.

years of conditioning and he has just come through so quickly?

:13:36.:13:43.

Who would have thought. You never know if you are a natural discus

:13:43.:13:49.

thrower before you try it. We have about half-an-hour to go before we

:13:50.:13:53.

see Usain Bolt. Just getting those muscles warmed up and into the

:13:53.:14:00.

right frame of mind. Getting a bit chilly... Yes. I am hoping he

:14:00.:14:05.

realises that. I hope he prepares himself well because we need him

:14:05.:14:12.

Abbas World Championships. We don't want anything risky to happen. But

:14:12.:14:17.

the next event to happen, the women's 400-metre hurdles. The

:14:17.:14:23.

person I am looking forward to his Spencer, also from Jamaica. I think

:14:23.:14:27.

this young lady has more talent than any body I have seen in this

:14:27.:14:31.

event and next year, watch out in those Olympic Games. I think she

:14:31.:14:41.

has the ability to come under 53 seconds. One applied to is not here,

:14:41.:14:49.

Perri Shakes-Drayton. How do you rate her development through to the

:14:49.:14:59.
:14:59.:15:02.

event where you need to get the technique right. You can only home

:15:02.:15:06.

that with practice. And you need to practise it under pressure, too.

:15:06.:15:12.

Perri, she's a great, talented athlete. I'm looking forward to her

:15:12.:15:17.

sneaking under 54 seconds, getting close to around 53.5 on a regular

:15:17.:15:22.

basis. Once you do that, you can elevate yourself into a true world

:15:22.:15:25.

class and be competitive against the rest of these women that we are

:15:25.:15:31.

just about a bit -- just about to see. I also think she wants a place

:15:31.:15:36.

in the relay. Yes, that's a good move. It's what she wants to do. If

:15:36.:15:42.

you can get two Metals, why not? Christine Ohorougu running the 400m.

:15:42.:15:47.

Yes, it will be nice to see her running again. We saw her run quite

:15:47.:15:52.

quickly in Barcelona. She's qualified in the A list when it

:15:53.:15:56.

comes to the actual Championships coming up. Let's have a look at the

:15:56.:16:06.
:16:06.:16:11.

start list for this women's 400 draw. It's going to be a battle

:16:11.:16:15.

between the two Jamaicans. It's a national event that we are going to

:16:15.:16:20.

take place here, but it could be a very quick one indeed. If you take

:16:20.:16:23.

that into consideration, it's a little bit blustery... We are

:16:23.:16:30.

looking at the flags behind us now. These women, they look ready, they

:16:30.:16:34.

look competitive. Let's see what the time will be. The wind does

:16:34.:16:38.

make a huge difference. It plays havoc with the rhythm, whereas you

:16:38.:16:43.

want to relax. You can relax into the back straight, certainly, but

:16:43.:16:53.
:16:53.:17:12.

we are looking forward to. Let's season. She ran in the Commonwealth

:17:12.:17:17.

Games lasted just outside 56 seconds. Then you've got Queen

:17:18.:17:27.
:17:28.:17:30.

Harrison of the United States. 54.78 this season. Walker, the

:17:30.:17:36.

Olympic champion. Drawn in the fifth lane. Always difficult to

:17:36.:17:45.

beat. 53.56 this season. A slight hiccup in Paris, she was fifth on

:17:45.:17:51.

that one. Spencer and Walker, two formidable athletes. Former world

:17:51.:17:57.

junior champion here. Seven times and a 54 seconds is Spencer of

:17:57.:18:07.
:18:07.:18:08.

Jamaica. This is Yaroshchuk of the Ukraine. 54.77. Pretty good, going

:18:08.:18:15.

well. Boden on the outside, the Australian. She was fourth in the

:18:15.:18:25.

Commonwealth Games, fifth in Shanghai earlier this season. We

:18:25.:18:29.

shall see now whether the Jamaicans are showing the sort of form that

:18:29.:18:36.

will see them through to the medals. That is Spencer. She is 50.55 400m

:18:36.:18:46.
:18:46.:18:46.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:18:46.:19:40.

it's the fifth round blow for De Zordo, the German. His best to date,

:19:40.:19:46.

83.14. That looks big - it's better, much better. That's around 84

:19:46.:19:56.
:19:56.:20:16.

83.36. He finds another few centimetres but he's in third place.

:20:16.:20:26.
:20:26.:20:26.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:20:26.:21:07.

No change to his position. The 400m amongst the hurdles quickly.

:21:08.:21:15.

Spencer has gone off a very quickly. She's already past Yaroshchuk. She

:21:15.:21:25.

is traced by Walker down the back straight. -- chased. It's Jamaica

:21:25.:21:35.
:21:35.:21:57.

Wilson in third place with Harrison Spencer is awake. Spencer takes it.

:21:57.:22:05.

53.74. That's a terrific time. It's just outside the world's best. It's

:22:05.:22:15.
:22:15.:22:23.

a new meeting record. The record was set in 1985. There was no

:22:23.:22:30.

chance to let up. But she was the strongest of the final barrier bed.

:22:30.:22:37.

-- barrier there. That time was impressive. Any stadium record here

:22:37.:22:41.

is one that has to be given the greatest respect. She's just broken

:22:41.:22:51.
:22:51.:22:58.

one of the oldest. The Jamaicans the defending world champion in

:22:58.:23:04.

second place here, Walker. But coming good as it matters most.

:23:04.:23:14.
:23:14.:23:19.

That's -- that last hurdle with the last world championships. I'll

:23:19.:23:29.
:23:29.:24:05.

have a feeling it will change this do. Come on, match that! He enjoys

:24:05.:24:12.

his jumping. He wears his heart on his sleeve. His season's best is

:24:12.:24:16.

only 2.34. British athletes focusing on

:24:16.:24:19.

selection for the World Championships this weekend, but

:24:19.:24:22.

they can't have failed to notice, along with a Olympic athletes of

:24:22.:24:30.

all disciplines, that there's only one year to go until 2012. A year

:24:30.:24:34.

to go till 2012. Everyone wants to be there, everyone wants the chance

:24:35.:24:40.

to compete at a home Olympics. you are treating it - at dreaming

:24:40.:24:43.

about it, it still gives you goosebumps. It's a special moment.

:24:43.:24:49.

It's pretty exciting to think what could happen. Having it on your own

:24:49.:24:55.

doorstep is amazing. It is exciting, and it's not too far away. If I

:24:55.:24:59.

qualify for the Olympics then I am going to be the most happy girl on

:24:59.:25:05.

the planet! I'm just hoping I can do myself proud now. Thinking about

:25:05.:25:11.

winning, thinking about desire, passion and motivation. Get to the

:25:11.:25:15.

start line in one piece. I've got a silver medal in Athens, I can only

:25:15.:25:20.

imagine what getting a gold one would feel like. To win a fourth

:25:20.:25:25.

gold medal on home waters would be an incredible achievement. Still

:25:25.:25:30.

really excited, still absolutely loving the journey. It's just a

:25:30.:25:37.

privileged to be able to do this again. When you say a year to go, I

:25:37.:25:42.

think you get bats like rush of adrenalin and think - to bring it

:25:42.:25:46.

on! I think we just need to go out there and enjoy it and make the

:25:46.:25:52.

most of it and do what we know we are capable of doing. Absolutely

:25:52.:26:02.
:26:02.:26:08.

fantastic. I can't wait until the the next episode of British Olympic

:26:09.:26:18.

dreams next Saturday. We've got a profile on the Bramley Brothers.

:26:18.:26:28.
:26:28.:26:34.

Isinbayeva in the pole vault, over tell you what, she's got it! That

:26:34.:26:40.

is a fantastic vault. That is so different. The confidence of this

:26:40.:26:46.

woman. For 0.76, goes straight into the lead. She came in here with a

:26:46.:26:56.
:26:56.:26:56.

personal best of all 0.60. She came into the competition at 4.64.

:26:56.:27:06.
:27:06.:27:17.

soon as I saw that I thought, she's out without a fight. He leads

:27:17.:27:21.

jointly with Ukhov. They have identical cards, apart from the

:27:21.:27:31.
:27:31.:27:34.

fact that Ukhov came in at 2.15 and and 2812 and retaining her Olympic

:27:34.:27:41.

title. We were both involved in the celebrations earlier in the week.

:27:41.:27:44.

There was a huge level of excitement and expectation. It was

:27:44.:27:49.

amazing. We were both at the Aquatics Centre, different times of

:27:49.:27:53.

the day. What was the excitement was from the journalists that were

:27:53.:27:58.

there. At long last, I felt that we've engaged them. Once we've

:27:58.:28:01.

engaged the press and television media as well at the same time, we

:28:01.:28:06.

can start to bring the Olympic Games allied to the general public.

:28:06.:28:09.

I was mesmerised seeing the amount of Olympic champions that were

:28:09.:28:14.

wandering around the stadium. It was fantastic to see. It's still

:28:14.:28:17.

inspired me, that's for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing what it

:28:17.:28:21.

can do to some of our youngsters. You've got a number of British

:28:21.:28:24.

athletes looking forward to that. Where would you assess our chances

:28:25.:28:29.

in terms of track and field? I think they've said eight medals, at

:28:29.:28:34.

least one gold. Where are we? year out is still a long way to go

:28:34.:28:37.

up. There's a whole winter you have to do before you even consider

:28:37.:28:41.

getting out there but 2012. I think what we've got on A-team level

:28:41.:28:48.

right now is more than adequate. Let's see what happens. A year to

:28:48.:28:52.

go, let's see. Plenty of time for them. Next up on track is the

:28:52.:29:02.
:29:02.:29:19.

We will look and see what happens until this race settles down. If

:29:19.:29:29.

they are going to have any chance of going underneath that world time,

:29:29.:29:33.

at 14. When did you. It is frustrating that the wind has

:29:33.:29:40.

stayed with us. Flags are still blowing quite healthily next to us

:29:40.:29:45.

in Stockholm. Let's see how they cope with those of gusting

:29:45.:29:52.

conditions. We go back to the javelin, which is just getting into

:29:52.:30:02.
:30:02.:30:06.

its final stages. This man's best to date, just over 80 metres. Can

:30:06.:30:16.
:30:16.:30:16.

he improve? He can! That is around 83 metres. He lives himself up. I

:30:16.:30:25.

would say a lift of two places with that effort. Remember, Andreas

:30:25.:30:30.

Thorkildsen is leading for the second round. But that's not bad at

:30:30.:30:40.
:30:40.:30:48.

all. 83.4 p for, and a great effort to move into third. -- 83.44.

:30:48.:30:58.
:30:58.:31:00.

third and final attempt in the high jump for this man. But he did not

:31:00.:31:10.
:31:10.:31:12.

attack it, Andrey Silnov. And back to this race, the 5,000-

:31:12.:31:19.

metre women's. So often this season we have had pacemaking that the

:31:19.:31:29.
:31:29.:31:31.

runners have not responded to. And now the pole vault. A third

:31:31.:31:40.

time fail for Silke Spiegelburg. I am tempted to say normal service is

:31:40.:31:50.
:31:50.:31:52.

resumed. The champion has seen off Momanyi of Brazil, who has

:31:52.:32:02.
:32:02.:32:03.

certainly been prominent this season. But the Russian is there on

:32:03.:32:13.
:32:13.:32:15.

top, and now a final effort from Matthias De Zordo. It has certainly

:32:15.:32:22.

been made a profit for the others. His best to date, 83.36. That it is

:32:22.:32:31.

much better. No Winnie the 88-metre mark that Andreas Torquil son has

:32:31.:32:40.

hit tonight. -- no where near the 1880 metre mark that Andreas

:32:40.:32:50.
:32:50.:32:50.

Thorkildsen has hit tonight. This is an improvement. The best effort

:32:50.:33:00.
:33:00.:33:15.

slower than they wanted in this 5,000 metres. In the lead, of

:33:15.:33:25.

course, at Vivian Cheruiyot. final attempt in this women's pole

vault. But it is not to be. Spiegelburg and Feofanova, as well

:33:43.:33:53.
:33:53.:33:57.

as Momanyi, all finding this height beyond them. -- Fabiana Murer.

:33:57.:34:01.

certainly looks to me as though Vivien Cherry it is going along

:34:01.:34:11.
:34:11.:34:17.

with the pace. -- Vivian Cheruiyot. You can now see for yourself.

:34:17.:34:27.

Cherono is there in second place proper. -- Ngetich-Cherono was

:34:27.:34:37.
:34:37.:34:48.

stopped and then you have Mercy there. It is coming up for two

:34:48.:34:58.
:34:58.:34:59.

kilometres. And Cheruiyot has great speed. The speed is now quick.

:34:59.:35:09.

was very much quicker. They had that too many is 55 to start with.

:35:09.:35:19.
:35:19.:35:28.

-- 2: 55. And to the men's high jump, and

:35:28.:35:37.

Ukhov holds the second. A very, very tight jumper indeed. And now

:35:37.:35:46.

Ukhov gets it. He calls his season's best to boot. Now,

:35:46.:35:53.

Williams, there's no point in attempting any more. Williams has

:35:54.:36:03.
:36:04.:36:05.

cleared 2.37 the sea and leads the world rankings.

:36:05.:36:13.

Now, Cheruiyot, the African champion, is moving well. She won

:36:14.:36:21.

in a 14.33, and look at this. This is a dramatic race. Clearly she has

:36:21.:36:27.

come here to try to get a season's best.

:36:27.:36:35.

And now second attempt for Jesse Williams in the high jump. No! If

:36:35.:36:40.

he had cleared that, he would have stayed in first place with Ukhov.

:36:40.:36:45.

It would have been, again, a copycat series of jumps from

:36:45.:36:50.

Williams, along with the Russian, Ukhov. But Ukhov now holds pole

:36:50.:37:00.
:37:00.:37:01.

position. Checa is now in second. They are

:37:01.:37:04.

now going into the back straight and they are still about 50 metres

:37:04.:37:14.
:37:14.:37:14.

behind. Dolores Checa of Spain is going well. She is leading the

:37:14.:37:18.

trading group, which is the race, but the real demonstration is going

:37:19.:37:27.

on about 50, 60 metres ahead. Ngetich-Cherono is now moving ahead

:37:27.:37:36.

of Cherono. The two Cheronos. But this is going to be a very, very

:37:36.:37:46.
:37:46.:37:50.

good one indeed from Cheruiyot. She is going very, very strongly enough.

:37:50.:38:00.
:38:00.:38:00.

Another very, very quick time. They have come back from that two-minute

:38:00.:38:10.
:38:10.:38:14.

is 55. That is very strong. -- 2: 55. She is moving down the back

:38:14.:38:24.
:38:24.:38:31.

straight so well there. Her rhythm is so good. And now, Isinbayeva.

:38:32.:38:39.

No! It did not look close, frankly, and I wonder if this is one ask too

:38:39.:38:46.

much. But it has been a great night after a difficult period for her. I

:38:46.:38:56.
:38:56.:38:59.

think she was burnt-out and needed a break.

:38:59.:39:07.

And now back to this race. Checa is there. And we have Kipyego on the

:39:07.:39:16.

back of that group. Certainly now, she is on for roundabout 14: 23 or

:39:16.:39:26.
:39:26.:39:31.

thereabouts. I am a little puzzled. Why did he

:39:31.:39:41.
:39:41.:39:42.

not take it at 2.36? Ukhov cleared the second time. He is in second

:39:42.:39:52.
:39:52.:39:53.

tonight to this man, Ivan in, who will equal his season's best. --

:39:53.:40:03.
:40:03.:40:09.

Ivan at Ukhov. Jesse Williams will have his opportunity for revenge.

:40:09.:40:15.

This race is certainly inside this season's best. The Americans are in

:40:15.:40:20.

the middle of that group. Checa finds herself being overtaken by

:40:21.:40:30.

four or five athletes. There are two races on. Well, one race and

:40:30.:40:38.

one demonstration. She is about 150, 160 metres ahead of the rest of the

:40:38.:40:47.

field. That is Cheruiyot. She is absolutely spot on again. That is a

:40:47.:40:52.

very, very formidable run on her own. She is looking, actually, to

:40:52.:41:00.

go close to her personal best. That was the record when she was behind

:41:00.:41:06.

on that one before Oslo race. The record was torn apart on that

:41:07.:41:16.
:41:17.:41:17.

occasion. Two minutes to go. will raise her game in the last

:41:17.:41:27.
:41:27.:41:29.

1,000, there's no doubt about that. It is going to be very fast indeed.

:41:29.:41:36.

The stadium record is 14: 12, which will not be beaten. But she is now

:41:36.:41:42.

leading by around 140 metres. We are watching a wonderful exhibition

:41:43.:41:48.

run here from Cheruiyot. She is throwing out a challenge to the

:41:48.:41:55.

Europeans, saying, I am in shape, match this! Get your house in order

:41:55.:42:01.

because mine is spot on! Flanagan seems to have gone ahead of the

:42:01.:42:06.

rest and is starting to stretch them. But the diminutive figure of

:42:06.:42:16.

Cheruiyot is burying them. They almost 170, 180 metres behind.

:42:16.:42:26.
:42:26.:42:26.

Flanagan is in second place at the moment. She is absolutely flying.

:42:26.:42:32.

She has had a 68 in there. Pretty consistent. When you have been

:42:32.:42:40.

running like that, it is terrific distance running. There's Flanagan,

:42:40.:42:46.

challenging the Africans. Flanagan, giving a Wii good account of

:42:46.:42:56.
:42:56.:42:58.

herself. -- 8 really a good account. We focused in on the wrong athlete

:42:58.:43:05.

there. That is not Cheruiyot. is coming round the bend. There she

:43:05.:43:14.

is. What a run this has been! Absolutely superb. The crowd are

:43:14.:43:19.

standing for this. A world-class performance indeed. It is a

:43:19.:43:25.

stunning performance by this young woman. It is going to be a world-

:43:25.:43:32.

leading time. A sensational run! A personal best and a world lead in

:43:32.:43:40.

time. That is a sensational run all on her own, really. The pacemaker

:43:40.:43:46.

worked for her. They did their job. The rest of following in now and

:43:46.:43:51.

this looks like Sally Kipyego coming in, in second place. And

:43:51.:43:58.

just looking, checking on third place. The race was a demonstration

:43:58.:44:04.

in the end and that was a world- class performance in every sense.

:44:04.:44:09.

That is the unofficial time there. World-leading, and by a

:44:09.:44:17.

considerable margin. She is still the third fastest athlete in

:44:17.:44:24.

history behind those astonishing runs from the Ethiopian so. Both

:44:24.:44:29.

coming in in the middle of that season in 2008. But she is

:44:29.:44:36.

gradually homing in. It was, as you said, an exhibition run, on what is

:44:36.:44:45.

a rather cool evening. Not ideal conditions. Cheruiyot has had a

:44:45.:44:51.

meeting record earlier in this season. Tonight, it has been 14: 24

:44:51.:45:01.
:45:01.:45:09.

stop a fabulous performance from Mitchell Watt, you World League

:45:09.:45:14.

8.54. I'm very happy. I had a bit of a problem with my heel the past

:45:14.:45:18.

month, but during the warm-up it felt really good. I knew if my heel

:45:18.:45:22.

held up I'd jump really big today and that turned out to be the case

:45:22.:45:27.

to. Taking a scout like Saladino, a big psychological boost in front of

:45:27.:45:30.

the world championships. Definitely. It's getting pretty close now. To

:45:30.:45:38.

keep coming out on top is important. Hopefully I can keep the format for

:45:38.:45:43.

another month. We've got Greg Rutherford and Kris Commons in in

:45:43.:45:48.

that. They are both jumping really well this year. Abbey in London

:45:48.:45:52.

next weekend, it will be another good competition. The great job,

:45:52.:45:55.

well done. It was a world lead in the long jump. I wonder if there

:45:55.:46:05.
:46:05.:46:25.

will be a world lead in the 200m streaking away already. He's

:46:25.:46:35.
:46:35.:46:36.

brilliant beyond compare. He is flying. Away he goes! He's done it

:46:36.:46:42.

again! They say lightning doesn't strike twice... Stemming! Five gold

:46:42.:46:52.
:46:52.:46:55.

medals. Five world records. You've proudly above the stadium here.

:46:56.:46:59.

Unfortunately, it's blowing in the wrong direction. It is,

:46:59.:47:03.

unfortunately. But you never know with this man, what he can do. I

:47:03.:47:09.

remember watching him in Oslo. I thought if he got around the 22nd

:47:09.:47:13.

figure it would be sensational, but he went away and a writ. Now we

:47:13.:47:18.

will see what kind of form he is in, how he feels. Do you think he wants

:47:18.:47:24.

to run faster or do you think he is just happy to win? It's raining a

:47:24.:47:27.

little bit. They put him on at the end of the evening but it does get

:47:27.:47:31.

a bit cooler. It's definitely getting a little bit cooler. But if

:47:31.:47:35.

you remember this time last year, when this meeting took place, he

:47:35.:47:38.

was beaten by Tyson Gay. He's never won here in Stockholm. I'm pretty

:47:39.:47:42.

sure he wants to put that right. Perhaps he will put it right in a

:47:43.:47:52.
:47:53.:47:55.

big way. Anybody here who might worry him? No. You have to ask the

:47:55.:47:59.

question! This whole crowd will be anticipating a great performance

:47:59.:48:03.

from him. I think they were disappointed last year, because

:48:03.:48:07.

when he was beaten by Thais and gave the whole stadium went very

:48:07.:48:17.

quiet. -- by Tyson Gay. When he runs, and hopefully runs a world

:48:17.:48:21.

best, then they will get to see the real Usain Bolt. It's an

:48:21.:48:26.

interesting phenomenon. Some athletes across all sports, you

:48:26.:48:29.

have this mythical atmosphere about them. You don't want to see them

:48:29.:48:34.

lose. No, he's one of the champions that you want to see win and win.

:48:34.:48:38.

We all know it's virtually impossible to do that for numerous

:48:38.:48:43.

races, especially when he's doing two events. He's doing the 100m and

:48:43.:48:48.

the 200m. He's always going to be more susceptible in the 100m

:48:48.:48:52.

because that's not his natural distance. His natural distance is

:48:52.:48:57.

the 200m. And, ultimately, I think the 400m is beckoning him. It's

:48:57.:49:01.

great to see him in this event, the end he loves the most, and

:49:01.:49:05.

hopefully going out there and keep winning at this event. The few are

:49:05.:49:08.

going to put a percentage figure on what kind of shape he's in, what

:49:08.:49:14.

would you think? It's difficult. There are a lot of different

:49:14.:49:18.

factors. You have to have the racing in, how fresh you are, what

:49:18.:49:21.

the travelling is like, where your main focus is. Now he's got to

:49:21.:49:24.

focus on just winning the championships. That's what people

:49:24.:49:29.

are expecting him to do. He uses these races very cleverly, he

:49:29.:49:34.

doesn't stick to one event. To have their build-up to win the major

:49:34.:49:39.

event. He cannot lose major championships. Those big events, he

:49:39.:49:44.

cannot lose. He can come to one or two of these events and dip out

:49:44.:49:48.

once or twice, and we will forgive him. But we expect the big man to

:49:48.:49:52.

perform in the big performances at the right time. You say that, if

:49:52.:49:56.

you felt he couldn't go to the championships and win, it would you

:49:56.:50:01.

see him withdrawing? He's been pushed closed in the 100m. The 200m

:50:01.:50:05.

is perhaps a bit easier. If he produced a performance tonight

:50:05.:50:09.

which didn't fill him with confidence, mighty withdraw?

:50:09.:50:13.

few look at what the date is now, it's still over a month to go. Four

:50:13.:50:16.

athletes of this calibre, they are talking about polishing up at this

:50:16.:50:20.

stage. He would take a couple of days off, a couple of days to think

:50:20.:50:24.

about it, but I don't think we need to worry about that. I think you

:50:24.:50:30.

will produce a good performance and really put all the doubters... All

:50:30.:50:33.

the doubts out of his questions and everybody else of what he can do

:50:33.:50:39.

over this distance. The women's pole vault is under way. Isinbayeva,

:50:39.:50:49.
:50:49.:50:58.

attempt. Now going to 4.86. Well, I think it signals the return of this

:50:58.:51:02.

young woman. She's certainly getting back to the form that we

:51:02.:51:07.

know and associate with her. She wins on her first outing back into

:51:07.:51:13.

the big league. There is the evidence. Season's best, 4.76.

:51:13.:51:23.
:51:23.:51:24.

There's much more to come. Back to Mr Bolt. Has there been

:51:24.:51:28.

perhaps a sense in which he's been holding himself back to get ready

:51:28.:51:31.

for 2012? Retaining his Olympic title and perhaps doing something

:51:31.:51:35.

similar to what he did in Beijing and Berlin, to put those records

:51:35.:51:39.

beyond doubt. He is one of these athletes who believes in himself

:51:39.:51:42.

and in his performance. He sets his own goals and objectives. If you

:51:43.:51:46.

keep that in mind when he approaches every single competition.

:51:46.:51:50.

For him, at the moment he doesn't believe he is a legend in this

:51:50.:51:54.

sport. He believes he needs to come back to win the Olympic Games, do

:51:54.:52:01.

this twice and then he will become a legend. I scratch my head! Kind

:52:01.:52:04.

of a legend because of the times he has run. Let's have a look at the

:52:05.:52:09.

start list. The final race of this evening, the one that everybody has

:52:09.:52:14.

been waiting for. All of these men are pretty nervous. They need to go

:52:14.:52:18.

out there, they are testing themselves out. With that in mind,

:52:18.:52:22.

they will be ignoring Usain Bolt and thinking he is just going to go,

:52:22.:52:28.

he's going to play for the crowd and run quick regardless. Alonso

:52:28.:52:33.

Edwards, silver medallist from Beijing. Saidy Ndure, another

:52:33.:52:42.

outstanding athlete. He's had a great race in Lausanne. He's been

:52:42.:52:48.

disqualified quite recently. Listen to this reception when he announces

:52:48.:52:58.
:52:58.:52:59.

this man's name. I still can't get up a quite how relaxed and happy

:52:59.:53:05.

and carefree he seems. You know, behind all that the heart is still

:53:05.:53:09.

pumping. He is an athlete after all. He needs to come out and produce a

:53:09.:53:12.

performance. He will still be slightly nervous and anxious and he

:53:12.:53:16.

won't want to let himself down. That's the key to it all. We are

:53:16.:53:26.
:53:26.:53:28.

just about set to go. Let's runners because Usain Bolt is just

:53:28.:53:31.

bounding into form. He hasn't been beaten this year. He's received

:53:31.:53:36.

quite a lot of criticism and there's been speculation about his

:53:36.:53:44.

form. He ran 9.88 in Monaco last week. He had an appalling start,

:53:44.:53:53.

the slowest out of the blocks of a 100m. Bolt in lane six. He starts

:53:53.:53:59.

as a strong favourite. This should be an exhibition run. The stadium

:53:59.:54:09.
:54:09.:54:27.

moving away. He's only halfway round the bend. Into the straight

:54:27.:54:36.

now. Now he polls at home. The rest of the field are disappearing. It's

:54:36.:54:46.
:54:46.:54:46.

going to be a big victory. 20.03. It's another victory for Usain Bolt.

:54:46.:54:53.

I'm sure the knockers will say, well, where's that 19... That world

:54:53.:55:02.

record from -- form. But it's not a warm evening, the temperature has

:55:02.:55:07.

certainly dropped. It's below 20 degrees at the moment. I've got a

:55:07.:55:10.

jacket on sitting here. He's running into quite a strong

:55:10.:55:14.

headwind. He hasn't really got any competition. He's one very

:55:14.:55:19.

comfortably. You can't really fault it. No, he's much more comfortable

:55:19.:55:24.

up at 200m than he is over 100m at the moment. He has the speed

:55:24.:55:27.

endurance and strength endurance to take him away from the rest of the

:55:27.:55:32.

field. Anderson of Jamaica coming very strongly through. As was

:55:32.:55:37.

Edward of Panama. A little look that way, where is everybody? He

:55:37.:55:44.

could just sense Anderson. The crowd quiet as he went round that

:55:44.:55:54.
:55:54.:55:55.

bend. Just outside 20 seconds. It's too slow, he says. We've seen him

:55:55.:56:03.

very closely run at 100m. We've seen that in Monaco. It was a very

:56:03.:56:07.

close account. But here he runs the bend quite well. His transition

:56:07.:56:12.

into the straight is good. He has to work off that bend. I'm looking

:56:12.:56:15.

at the man inside him, who is illegally running on the line,

:56:15.:56:19.

that's Anderson. In a championship he would have been disqualified

:56:19.:56:24.

there. Usain Bolt comes away from the rest of the field. You measure

:56:24.:56:34.
:56:34.:56:36.

his performance by what the rest did. They are close to 22nd meant.

:56:36.:56:41.

-- 22nd, men. As he goes on his celebration, we will bring you up-

:56:41.:56:44.

to-date with the result in a moment. We've seen the pole vault early on.

:56:44.:56:54.
:56:54.:56:56.

Look at this. It's good to see. even a sub 20. We are a bit

:56:56.:57:00.

disappointed. Yeah. The look on his face when he crossed the line, he

:57:00.:57:04.

was slightly disappointed, too. But it was quite a strong headwind for

:57:04.:57:08.

him. Whatever you see down the home straight, you've got to multiply

:57:08.:57:15.

that. It was a decent performance. 20.03, we can't really complain too

:57:15.:57:18.

much. The absolutely annihilated the field. It's what we expect him

:57:19.:57:23.

to do. They are quality athletes behind him, people who've run very

:57:23.:57:27.

quickly over this distance. He has still left them all trailing. He

:57:27.:57:34.

himself, I don't think he's going to worry about the 200m too much.

:57:34.:57:39.

When he comes down the home straight, if you notice, he is

:57:39.:57:41.

glancing left, right and centre. He's not paying that much attention

:57:41.:57:45.

to his performance. When the pressure is on and he has to really

:57:45.:57:49.

go out there and deal with a major competition and major competitors,

:57:49.:57:55.

then it should be OK. Don't worry. I still think he'll hang on to both

:57:55.:57:58.

titles. That just about round things off from Stockholm this

:57:58.:58:08.
:58:08.:58:33.
