Hello. Welcome to Mount Eden in Auckland. We are here for the | :01:59. | :02:04.
climax of the 2012 world triathlon series. What a view and what a year | :02:04. | :02:09.
it has been. The Olympics it was the star attraction but most of the | :02:09. | :02:13.
world's top triathletes have been going for the world Championship | :02:13. | :02:18.
title. We have seen seven races in seven countries leading up to the | :02:18. | :02:22.
Grand Final in New Zealand's biggest city. The action has come | :02:22. | :02:27.
down to the wire as neither the male or female world champions have | :02:27. | :02:31.
been decided. We will tackle the men later, but let's concentrate on | :02:31. | :02:36.
the women's. As we found out over the summer, Helen Jenkins cannot | :02:37. | :02:41.
defend the title because of injury. So let's meet the women fighting | :02:41. | :02:51.
:02:51. | :02:55. | ||
for the Crown. Everything counts in this race. Anything can happen. I | :02:55. | :03:05.
:03:05. | :03:06. | ||
will give it my everything. It's will be a battle. Erin Densham has | :03:06. | :03:11.
become more consistent this year. The only weakness I see for her is | :03:11. | :03:14.
in the swimming. But she can definitely run and put the hammer | :03:14. | :03:20.
down when she needs to. Erin Densham is by far the best athlete | :03:20. | :03:25.
this year on average. Performances have been outstanding. She has been | :03:25. | :03:29.
in the top three all the way through. It would be really nice | :03:30. | :03:34.
being world champion. It would be nice to come away with the title. I | :03:34. | :03:42.
have had the best year I have ever had. Lisa Norden has also done a | :03:42. | :03:48.
great job. Just different phases of the year. I cannot see a weakness | :03:48. | :03:53.
at the moment. I had my injury problems and I was quite worried | :03:53. | :03:58.
before. I thought I would have time to get it together. I am proud of | :03:58. | :04:05.
myself I managed to get it together. COMMENTATOR: Lisa Norden wins the | :04:05. | :04:09.
event. Only a few points separating first | :04:09. | :04:14.
and second in the world. It might actually be about making sure you | :04:14. | :04:20.
beat the competitor. If you are looking at the title it is between | :04:20. | :04:25.
Erin Densham and Lisa Norden. If you are looking at the overall race, | :04:25. | :04:32.
it is not a two woman race. Andrea Hewitt will be another one to watch. | :04:32. | :04:37.
I have had a consistent year. The same as the last few years. I have | :04:37. | :04:41.
not done anything amazing so that is why I would like to finish on a | :04:41. | :04:45.
high note. Last year she won on this course and I don't think it | :04:45. | :04:51.
will be a problem for her. She is good on hills, so this course will | :04:51. | :05:01.
:05:01. | :05:02. | ||
suit her well. Anne Haug did a great job with Lisa Norden in | :05:02. | :05:07.
Oklahoma. She has done an exceptional job and is only one | :05:07. | :05:14.
point behind. I think there will be at least five girls going into the | :05:14. | :05:21.
finishing sprint. I am not a big fan of sprint finishes. I am hoping | :05:21. | :05:26.
to get a different strategy in this race. The only thing I can control | :05:26. | :05:32.
is myself and I can only try to win. If it comes down to a sprint finish, | :05:32. | :05:37.
it comes down to a sprint finish and I will do everything I can. | :05:37. | :05:42.
was in this position in 2009 when I was in second. I could not make it | :05:42. | :05:48.
happen to get the gold medal. Now I'll try everything again to swap | :05:48. | :05:52.
my silver for a gold medal. Let's see what the women have left to do | :05:52. | :05:56.
to become world champion. It should be some duel between Olympic bronze | :05:56. | :06:06.
:06:06. | :06:09. | ||
medallist, Erin Densham and silver points separating them. Like Helen | :06:09. | :06:19.
:06:19. | :06:22. | ||
Jenkins, the former world champion, Emma Moffatt it is not racing. | :06:23. | :06:26.
Andrea Hewitt has the advantage of having won on her home course last | :06:26. | :06:36.
year and will have most of the To be honest you would take any | :06:36. | :06:42.
advantage you would get on that killer course. They will have to | :06:42. | :06:52.
:06:52. | :06:54. | ||
deal with these exceptionally high It is not just strength, it is a | :06:54. | :06:59.
technical course as well. It looks hard, they will need wet suits in | :07:00. | :07:06.
the harbour. Tidal currents they have to negotiate. Cold War tough. | :07:06. | :07:12.
Steep hills on the bike and eight laps? A eight laps for the seniors | :07:12. | :07:20.
and four for the juniors. Definitely will work your legs out. | :07:20. | :07:25.
At the top of the first Hill, you turn right and come downhill and it | :07:25. | :07:29.
looks like a roller-coaster ride way you are not sure what will | :07:29. | :07:34.
happen over the top. If it is wet he will be going a lot of speed and | :07:34. | :07:39.
I know there is there a bend at the bottom which will be difficult in | :07:39. | :07:46.
the wet. It is a challenging course. By the 6th lap you will see | :07:46. | :07:50.
everybody's legs getting tired and it was shown if you have not put in | :07:50. | :07:56.
your training. It looks like the bike is toughest. It is up and down. | :07:56. | :08:01.
Auckland looks harder than Madrid. On to the running, it is pretty | :08:01. | :08:06.
tame. It is in comparison to the bike. Having done more trouble laps | :08:06. | :08:10.
on the bike, will change the dynamics of those people who can | :08:10. | :08:17.
run well on easier bikes. But struggled with the tougher bikes. | :08:17. | :08:23.
It is unusually in very windy? is extremely windy. It is only | :08:23. | :08:29.
going to catch when you go between two tall buildings. It is most | :08:29. | :08:33.
sheltered. The tricky bit is you will hit the the wind and then you | :08:34. | :08:37.
will go behind a building and it will be sheltered. And then guess | :08:37. | :08:40.
what happens when you get to the other side of the building? The | :08:40. | :08:48.
wind will hit you again. You get hit from the side. It is a tough | :08:48. | :08:53.
triathlon, it will find out those who have not been training probably. | :08:53. | :08:59.
I got myself training very hard. Hopefully I won't be caught out. | :08:59. | :09:05.
like this course already. It is a race am looking forward to. | :09:05. | :09:08.
That tough course will be the stage for what should be a dramatic | :09:08. | :09:15.
showdown. We are ready to roll in Auckland. You commentators for the | :09:15. | :09:25.
:09:25. | :09:36. | ||
women's Grand Final race are Matt alongside Queen's Wharf. Then there | :09:36. | :09:42.
is a minute eight lap bike course which is pretty Hayley. -- eight | :09:42. | :09:49.
minutes. The cause has been designed by one or two of the | :09:49. | :09:59.
:09:59. | :10:00. | ||
legendary triathlon athletes from New Zealand in recent years. There | :10:00. | :10:05.
is only one British competitor in the field today and that is Jodie | :10:05. | :10:15.
:10:15. | :10:50. | ||
Stimpson who were is number 29. -- waters of Auckland harbour. On your | :10:50. | :11:00.
:11:00. | :11:07. | ||
left, Cook's Wharf. They swim up to the turning buoys. They are wearing | :11:07. | :11:11.
compulsory wetsuits. After two laps of this, a collapse of the bike, | :11:11. | :11:20.
culminating with a 10 kilometre run. -- eight laps of the bike. Only a | :11:20. | :11:29.
couple of the swimmers not getting on that front. The critical will be | :11:29. | :11:36.
the cycle section. This was a direct request from the triathletes | :11:36. | :11:40.
taking part that they are asking for a very tough courses. They | :11:40. | :11:45.
think it is going to be fairer, spread out and make it more of an | :11:45. | :11:51.
equal race. This would be ideal for one of the champions, Helen Jenkins, | :11:51. | :11:59.
who was not here. She has been carrying around a tremendous injury. | :11:59. | :12:05.
This would be her course. Having said that, Jodie Stimpson, she is | :12:05. | :12:10.
in great form. I have had a lot of contact with her. She has changed | :12:10. | :12:14.
her structure of training, her eating, and she has changed her | :12:14. | :12:22.
coach. She is a top-class swimmer now. This really is going to be a | :12:22. | :12:26.
fascinating race and we cannot always say that after the Olympics. | :12:26. | :12:30.
Sometimes there is a little bit of a lull but I do not think so today. | :12:30. | :12:38.
They are heading out towards the first turn. They will turn right | :12:38. | :12:43.
and then swim East briefly towards Clark's Wharf before turning right | :12:43. | :12:48.
again and following the line of Clark's Wharf back to the stock to | :12:48. | :12:54.
complete the lap. One or two of the swimmers are getting bunched up on | :12:54. | :13:04.
:13:04. | :13:08. | ||
these are fully double Tories. It right hand came over and I couldn't | :13:08. | :13:14.
spot the number but one of the swimmers got pushed almost totally | :13:14. | :13:21.
underwater. Interestingly, Erin Densham was leading, she got wide, | :13:21. | :13:28.
so I think she was almost taking... Pre-empting the situation, thinking | :13:28. | :13:35.
if she goes in tight she will get stuck. She wanted to get a nice, | :13:35. | :13:41.
calm, clear swim. They are bunching through midway... There it is | :13:41. | :13:49.
again! We do see that. Someone has gone under! Goodness me, that was a | :13:49. | :13:57.
very messy. Somebody got doctor twice as far as I could tell. | :13:57. | :14:02.
is what it looked like. Nobody is going to be doing that deliberately. | :14:02. | :14:05.
There will be penalties to pay if they do it deliberately but things | :14:05. | :14:11.
do happen like that. As we say, Erin Densham is playing a very | :14:11. | :14:16.
clever race, going wide on the terms making sure she has a clear | :14:16. | :14:23.
swim. So a group of half the field have broken away. There was clear | :14:23. | :14:31.
water between the two packs. We are with the leader, the Dutch Rachel | :14:31. | :14:38.
Klamer. Erin Densham is not far away. This cold water is having a | :14:38. | :14:46.
part to play. Of 14 degrees. -- 14 degrees. It is early summer in New | :14:47. | :14:56.
Zealand. As they reach the halfway point in the swim, after nine and a | :14:56. | :15:03.
half minutes, Rachel Klamer hits the carpeted blue area first, hangs | :15:03. | :15:11.
a right and dives back in, closely followed by Erin Densham and Andrea | :15:11. | :15:21.
:15:21. | :15:28. | ||
Hewitt. Duffy from Bermuda. Jodie Stimpson, we hope she is in that | :15:28. | :15:38.
:15:38. | :15:40. | ||
FirstGroup, which has so far ticked over. The two groups separated by | :15:41. | :15:50.
:15:51. | :15:58. | ||
You get a much better impression with those cameras. From the | :15:58. | :16:03.
helicopter, it looks flat but it isn't. I wonder whether it is an | :16:03. | :16:08.
indication the wind is a bit stronger than we anticipated. That | :16:08. | :16:17.
is going to make it even tougher with the bikes. So, with just under | :16:17. | :16:26.
500 metres to swim, the field is well spread. Everybody is | :16:26. | :16:33.
struggling to maintain the pace of Erin Densham and Rachel Klamer. We | :16:33. | :16:38.
saw a bit of argy-bargy going on the first time they hit the right | :16:38. | :16:43.
hand turn. They are quite well spread now so I anticipate there | :16:43. | :16:50.
will not be quite as much brutality this time around. Fortunately for | :16:50. | :16:57.
Great Britain, Jodie Stimpson is towards the back of the first pack, | :16:57. | :17:07.
:17:07. | :17:08. | ||
but she is very fast in transition. She trains a lot with Lisa Norden. | :17:08. | :17:18.
:17:18. | :17:20. | ||
And Anja Knapp. The German, Anne Haug has had a solid season. | :17:20. | :17:26.
think that was Erin Densham, she went right into that! Nobody was | :17:26. | :17:31.
pushing her and she hit it. I have to think if the wind is so strong | :17:31. | :17:39.
that it is edging it over a little bit. This has been the fastest | :17:39. | :17:46.
swimmer we have seen so far this year. The swimmers are getting | :17:46. | :17:51.
pushed by the swell and the chop, and it is getting quite tight on | :17:51. | :18:00.
these terms. And there is another punch-up going on between two of | :18:00. | :18:08.
the swimmers in about 9th and 10th position. Oh, my goodness me! The | :18:08. | :18:12.
early leaders are going wide and people are trying to come in inside | :18:12. | :18:16.
them and they are taking a huge risk because once the leaders have | :18:16. | :18:20.
gone past it, they will turn right to get a straight line, so the | :18:20. | :18:26.
people trying to seek an advantage by turning inside, I guess to win | :18:26. | :18:31.
large extent, they are bringing that upon themselves. There might | :18:31. | :18:36.
be a few words exchanged between some of these triathletes after | :18:36. | :18:44.
what has happened on the terms. Rachel Klamer has had a very good | :18:45. | :18:54.
:18:55. | :18:55. | ||
swim. We expect two groups to form. The first one will B30 or so strong. | :18:55. | :19:05.
:19:05. | :19:05. | ||
-- the first one will be 30 or so strong. She is working very hard. | :19:05. | :19:11.
Her pre-game plan was to get the lead and it has worked for half. | :19:11. | :19:21.
minutes as she comes out of the water closely followed by Densham. | :19:21. | :19:31.
:19:31. | :20:01. | ||
Klamer is first. Morrison, then There is this - now to the bikes. | :20:01. | :20:06.
Morrison's white suit is around her waist to get the smooth as | :20:06. | :20:12.
Transocean. They know where there bikes are parked. -- to get the | :20:12. | :20:22.
:20:22. | :20:25. | ||
smooth transition. Everything has to be done tidily. Jorgensen | :20:25. | :20:35.
:20:35. | :20:35. | ||
struggles to get the helmet off her bike. Lots of support for the New | :20:35. | :20:45.
:20:45. | :20:49. | ||
Zealand athletes. Not a great swim from Anne Haug. Aileen Morrison, a | :20:49. | :20:54.
great swim for her. She ensured she got herself a clean transition as | :20:54. | :21:02.
well. They head out first of four for a couple of hundred metres | :21:02. | :21:08.
before they do a quick out and back. They go East, then they go West, | :21:08. | :21:18.
:21:18. | :21:22. | ||
and then they start to climb up Queen Street. They go to Fort | :21:22. | :21:27.
Street, Wakefield Street, Auckland Street, and they cut through Albert | :21:27. | :21:33.
Park as well. We see a lot of the sites of Auckland during these | :21:33. | :21:38.
eight by claps. There is the first out and back. It is dry today so | :21:38. | :21:48.
:21:48. | :21:50. | ||
not proving problematic. Eight athletes out first. Now, these are | :21:50. | :21:55.
the initial four. Eight of the athletes managed to get off in | :21:55. | :22:05.
:22:05. | :22:09. | ||
front. Kate McIlroy, Juri Ide from Japan as well. Groff has had a good | :22:09. | :22:19.
:22:19. | :22:25. | ||
season. She just missed a medal at the catch up when she looked to be | :22:25. | :22:31.
dead at the Olympics. She must have pulled up 25 seconds to push | :22:31. | :22:35.
herself into 4th place. Saturday afternoon crowds starting | :22:35. | :22:40.
to grow in number as they welcome the first group through as they | :22:40. | :22:48.
head towards the first of what are a couple of demanding climbs. The | :22:48. | :22:58.
organisers have called upon Chris Gamble and Kevin Docherty to help | :22:58. | :23:02.
them designed the course. A lot of the triathletes have campaigned for | :23:02. | :23:10.
a tougher course. We have got a gap. We have 20 with full or 5 trying to | :23:10. | :23:15.
chase. This latter part of the client is quite steep. And people | :23:15. | :23:24.
are falling away from the pack. Densham was struggling to hold pace | :23:24. | :23:34.
:23:34. | :23:34. | ||
with the pack. This is the lead group numbering 20 or thereabouts. | :23:34. | :23:42.
We can follow them from the helicopter shot. This is the | :23:42. | :23:49.
afternoon Hayes, the temperature is expected to nudge 23 this afternoon. | :23:49. | :23:59.
:23:59. | :24:01. | ||
There is McIlroy for New Zealand. A ten-second penalty for irregular | :24:01. | :24:06.
transition for Alice Betto from Italy, number 34. We are not sure | :24:06. | :24:13.
what that was. Irregular transition. A ten-second penalty for Alice | :24:13. | :24:17.
Betto. You remember Jonathan Brownlee having to step into the | :24:17. | :24:23.
penalty box during the Olympics, and Betto would have to do that too. | :24:23. | :24:30.
It could be anything. It could be trying to get into the kit box and | :24:30. | :24:35.
missing out. 10 seconds is not that much. She is able to take that at | :24:35. | :24:45.
any time, pretty much. Now they start to climb. Klamer is first to | :24:45. | :24:52.
hit the uphill section. Keep an eye out for Jodie Stimpson on the | :24:52. | :24:58.
writer of your screen. Sarah Groff is at the back of the pack. And | :24:58. | :25:04.
that is Hiwot Ayalew, who has been dropped by the leaders. The leader | :25:05. | :25:09.
in the world triathlon standings has lost track with the leading | :25:09. | :25:14.
group and it looks like she isn't a bit of bother, Erin Densham. She is | :25:14. | :25:21.
winding it up and ending her race. Therefore, she ends her chance of | :25:21. | :25:25.
winning seats Triathlon World Series Grand Finals 2012. She is | :25:25. | :25:33.
being consoled, but it is all over. Is it a race too far? She said | :25:33. | :25:36.
after the Olympics she did very little for two weeks and then she | :25:36. | :25:42.
did come back. She said she found it very difficult, the difference | :25:42. | :25:47.
between takeover Training and real training. You think, post Olympics, | :25:47. | :25:52.
it is very difficult because the athletes will have that as the main | :25:52. | :25:56.
focus. To try to maintain that focus afterwards is hugely | :25:56. | :26:02.
difficult. I think sheep is a great athlete, Erin Densham, and I have | :26:02. | :26:10.
great sympathy for her. She won the first race of the series in Sydney. | :26:10. | :26:15.
She was second in San Diego. She never really found that sort of | :26:15. | :26:20.
winning form again. She won in Hamburg but in a depleted field as | :26:20. | :26:25.
people were taking time off before the Olympics. She got bronze at the | :26:25. | :26:30.
Olympics. Today, her chance of winning the title has slipped away. | :26:30. | :26:40.
:26:40. | :26:41. | ||
The only thing she can hope for his problems for Lisa Norden. Lisa | :26:42. | :26:47.
Norden is there, Aileen Morrison is there, Jodie Stimpson is there, | :26:47. | :26:57.
:26:57. | :27:12. | ||
I'm not sure if she is aware of what has happened to her rival | :27:12. | :27:22.
Carla Erin Densham. I'm sure her coach will relay to her, orgiastic | :27:22. | :27:31.
do it is finish this today and the title is hers. Less than 20 | :27:31. | :27:37.
kilometres to go. Despite what we may be saying is looking so move on | :27:37. | :27:43.
the bike, there doesn't appear to be any impact from the chasing pack. | :27:43. | :27:49.
None of that closing up. Jodie Stimpson stayed out of trouble and | :27:49. | :27:54.
played this race kg. We have an attack, what is going to happen | :27:54. | :28:02.
with this one. Be it is one of the New Zealand has. It is Kate McIlroy, | :28:02. | :28:10.
she has worked hard. Hoping to steal a march on her opponents. She | :28:10. | :28:16.
has got a bit of daylight. 10 metres also in front of the next | :28:16. | :28:21.
best, Kate McIlroy. It is a serious attack. Kate it will be looking | :28:21. | :28:26.
behind and asking is anybody going to come with me? Now she has made | :28:26. | :28:31.
that decision, she is pretty much going to have to go for it now to | :28:32. | :28:35.
strike and stay ahead. She has done the hard work, come onto the | :28:35. | :28:39.
downhill and this is where they are likely to be closing up. Unless | :28:39. | :28:43.
that commitment is there, I don't think she will be able to stay | :28:43. | :28:48.
awake. She needs a few athletes to get away so they can work on the | :28:48. | :28:58.
difficult sections of the bike. Kate McIlroy's lead is maintained | :28:58. | :29:08.
:29:08. | :29:21. | ||
her advantage. It is not insignificant. She is determined to | :29:21. | :29:25.
maintain it. Looking for a bit of support from the crowd, and she | :29:25. | :29:32.
will get it when Macey the black and white... Oh dear. Aileen | :29:32. | :29:42.
:29:42. | :29:47. | ||
Morrison's race is over. She is a little tearful. Her season ends in | :29:47. | :29:51.
disappointing fashion in New Zealand. I can only think there was | :29:51. | :29:56.
a mechanical problem or a crash that happened away from a camera. | :29:56. | :30:02.
She looked very comfortable. Bitterly disappointing with such a | :30:02. | :30:12.
:30:12. | :30:12. | ||
great swim. She was placed well in the leading pack. No great shame. | :30:12. | :30:17.
Kate McIlroy is still out front. She has made the break and | :30:17. | :30:21.
maintained it. Last time we checked her lead, it was about seven | :30:21. | :30:27.
seconds. It is more than that now. Possibly closer to 10 seconds. A | :30:27. | :30:33.
bit of work being done behind her to control the break. Kate McIlroy, | :30:33. | :30:37.
if nothing else, get this wonderful feeling of elation with the home | :30:37. | :30:43.
crowd right behind her, as she comes into transition and give the | :30:43. | :30:50.
New Zealand supporters to get -- something to get excited about. | :30:50. | :30:55.
love to see the commitment. I hope she can stay awake will stop it is | :30:55. | :31:01.
a five-second lead only. Although it does look more. It is a tough | :31:01. | :31:07.
call. Credit to her, she made the commitment. It appears she will | :31:07. | :31:10.
stay ahead. But she is hoping somebody else is brave enough to | :31:10. | :31:15.
make the break to try to get up with her so they can work together. | :31:15. | :31:19.
When you look at it from the helicopter shot, five seconds is | :31:19. | :31:26.
not that much at all. Kate McIlroy at least got the benefits of the | :31:26. | :31:35.
Mexican wave to welcome her into transitions. Here are the chasers. | :31:35. | :31:45.
:31:45. | :31:46. | ||
They are nearly a minute behind. He maybe the 200 metres has stretched | :31:46. | :31:50.
out AA fair bit. You wouldn't anticipate almost a minute coming | :31:50. | :31:57.
through. It is double to close it up. The interesting one is at the | :31:57. | :32:03.
front. With Kate having made the big commitment, is anybody else | :32:03. | :32:08.
going to be brave enough? Will they be brave enough to say, we won't | :32:08. | :32:15.
chase because we will rely on our own it running legs. Kate McIlroy | :32:15. | :32:23.
is taking cheers from the crowd. She is attempting to widen this gap. | :32:23. | :32:28.
It was around 10 seconds. She is out of the saddle again as she | :32:28. | :32:37.
heads towards the climb. There is a bit of a reaction from Abram, | :32:37. | :32:47.
:32:47. | :32:50. | ||
Rachel Palmer and Jodie Stimpson. Was that Lisa Norden taking evasive | :32:50. | :32:58.
action? I think it was Jodie Stimpson. She was just being pushed | :32:58. | :33:05.
into the centre of the road. She went the other side of the Keep | :33:05. | :33:15.
:33:15. | :33:18. | ||
Left sign. Street furniture was in the way! What are you like? That is | :33:18. | :33:28.
what they call it, isn't it? Transition on its feet as Stacy | :33:28. | :33:38.
:33:38. | :33:41. | ||
Kate McIlroy coming past in front of the bike stands. The gap is told | :33:41. | :33:49.
seconds. Kate McIlroy leads the way by 12 seconds. She is on her way to | :33:49. | :33:56.
start up the 7th lap. News from a British point of view is Jodie | :33:56. | :34:03.
Stimpson is still in amongst the leaders. I am with Darren Smith, | :34:03. | :34:09.
who is the Lisa Norden and and Hawk's couch. We knew she was ill, | :34:09. | :34:15.
but we did not think she would pull out? It is disappointment for her. | :34:15. | :34:21.
She wouldn't Paul out and leave the title to somebody else. Does Lisa | :34:21. | :34:26.
Norden know she is out? She will know, we have had messages sent to | :34:26. | :34:30.
her through the Swedish corporations. How was Lisa feeling | :34:30. | :34:35.
ahead of the race this morning? spent a bit of time at a hospital | :34:35. | :34:41.
this morning. She had a bit of food poisoning and sickness. About two | :34:41. | :34:46.
hours before the race, she held down some water and consulted the | :34:46. | :34:51.
dietician. So she is out there racing. I'm not sure she will be | :34:52. | :34:57.
firing on all cylinders, but she is out there. New Zealand is up there, | :34:57. | :35:04.
is there a bit of team tactics going on for Andrea Hewitt? Andrea | :35:04. | :35:08.
Hewitt and Anne Haug of one. Difference. What we saw in the | :35:09. | :35:14.
first few laps was definitely New Zealand pushing the pace in the | :35:14. | :35:18.
first group. Anne Haug was not in the first group until the second or | :35:18. | :35:21.
third lap. Why you have got somebody going off the front right | :35:21. | :35:27.
now, the emphasis was taken away. With your goals going for first and | :35:27. | :35:32.
third, how are your nerves? We are doing OK, it has been interesting. | :35:32. | :35:40.
I'm looking forward to the running race. It looks to me as if Kate's | :35:40. | :35:49.
cadence has slowed slightly. We will see if it is significant. | :35:50. | :35:55.
is about to because, Steve. Be it is tough, I admire the bravery of | :35:55. | :36:01.
the athletes who are willing to go by themselves. It is obviously what | :36:01. | :36:07.
Kris Gemmell was looking to do. When they were asked to design this | :36:07. | :36:11.
course. I do think it is maybe a little bit of a shame nobody was | :36:11. | :36:17.
brave enough to go along because it could have changed the race. Kate | :36:17. | :36:22.
McIlroy who made the break has been caught. Now she is back in with the | :36:22. | :36:32.
:36:32. | :36:35. | ||
pack. So, the group rose once again to 19. No change at the back. Sarah | :36:35. | :36:41.
Groff is still there. Kate McIlroy, twice she entered transition in the | :36:41. | :36:46.
lead, but the energy she expended has obviously taken its toll and | :36:46. | :36:51.
she has decided all she can do is hope for the best as they head out | :36:51. | :36:59.
to tackle the 7th lap. Things will start to wind up as they approached | :36:59. | :37:06.
the end of the final lap. Everybody will be starting to prepare the | :37:06. | :37:11.
transition. You will see them reach down and reach for their shoes and | :37:11. | :37:19.
start to take off the Velcro straps to make the exit, take their feet | :37:19. | :37:23.
out of the issues as they get to transition, much smoother and | :37:23. | :37:32.
easier. It has all been rehearsed and put into practice many times. | :37:32. | :37:41.
The 8th lap is almost done. Ai Ueda of Japan. She glances over her | :37:41. | :37:50.
shoulder. Jessica Harrison is still there. Lisa Norden just went | :37:50. | :37:59.
through. Jodie Stimpson involved as well. This is the last of the | :38:00. | :38:04.
climbing and they have a chance to freewheel down towards transition | :38:04. | :38:14.
:38:14. | :38:24. | ||
Norden, the Olympic silver medallist, the champion of the | :38:24. | :38:34.
:38:34. | :38:37. | ||
World Series in waiting. She has removed her feet from her shoes. | :38:37. | :38:47.
:38:47. | :38:51. | ||
Debbie Tanner is there for New Zealand. Yuka Sato the Japan. | :38:51. | :38:54.
have seen early preparations from Jodie Stimpson to take her right | :38:54. | :38:58.
foot out early on. But she has a great position at the front of the | :38:58. | :39:05.
pack. Sarah Groff is still at the back. Coming into the final stages | :39:06. | :39:13.
of this last laugh -- lap in last position. Will she try and claw | :39:13. | :39:19.
back a place or two as they come to the blue carpet. There is the | :39:19. | :39:22.
dismount line, they have to get that right and hit the ground | :39:22. | :39:29.
running. Parking places a weather bikes will be left. Jodie Stimpson | :39:29. | :39:39.
:39:39. | :39:43. | ||
is third. Lisa Norden is 4th. Rachel, his 5th. -- Rachel clamour. | :39:43. | :39:53.
:39:53. | :39:57. | ||
One is down. That was the Spaniard who got a hit on the head from her | :39:57. | :40:05.
own bike. Sarah Groff, I am surprised. I thought she would be | :40:05. | :40:10.
quicker through transitions. They have been cheeky to try to get an | :40:10. | :40:16.
early place. That is and Hawk. She is a strong runner. She has taken | :40:16. | :40:25.
the initiative at the start of the first lap. A different course. 2.5 | :40:25. | :40:35.
:40:35. | :41:00. | ||
kilometre laps. It will complete Haug is in second. Juri Ide takes | :41:00. | :41:09.
some more to a. Anja Knapp House a lead of 10 seconds. -- has a lead | :41:09. | :41:18.
of 10 seconds. Duffy in the All Road. So relaxed, Lisa Norden and | :41:18. | :41:28.
:41:28. | :41:28. | ||
Jodie Stimpson. I thought that Flora Duffy was working too hard. | :41:28. | :41:35.
Anja Knapp is working very hard. Look at Sharon as she goes around. | :41:35. | :41:41.
So relaxed. There were some incidents as they came into | :41:41. | :41:47.
transition. There we are, just behind the dismount line, perfect | :41:47. | :41:56.
timing for Anja Knapp. She left transition ahead of them all. Murua | :41:56. | :42:03.
was not so lucky. She slipped. She went down. She got whacked on the | :42:03. | :42:09.
head. The helmet was still on. Possibly she could have touched | :42:09. | :42:18.
bikes with Jessica Harrison. Now, 10 have emerged with only eight of | :42:18. | :42:28.
:42:28. | :42:31. | ||
about six metres... Over the Australian. That is Felicity Abram, | :42:31. | :42:39.
who is in the 11th. She is trying to close the gap. Andrea Hewitt, | :42:40. | :42:44.
and then McIlroy who made the early break is doing well to stay with | :42:44. | :42:49.
the pace. Yes, she must be one of the danger athletes because she is | :42:49. | :42:55.
going to be feeling very good on home territory. She won the race | :42:55. | :43:01.
last year. The lifting from the crowd will make the difference. | :43:01. | :43:09.
There we see the leaders turning awake as the pursuers come through. | :43:09. | :43:18.
Ide look -- looks like she is full of running. Klamer is looking | :43:18. | :43:27.
relaxed, considering she was out of the water first. Duffy has settled. | :43:27. | :43:37.
:43:37. | :43:37. | ||
Knapp's early break has been undone. She is sitting in 4th. Look out for | :43:37. | :43:45.
Riveros. Lisa Norden can finish with a sprint. She may not be as | :43:45. | :43:49.
fast as she was in the last couple of races because she was sick last | :43:49. | :43:55.
night and even took some medical advice and went to hospital | :43:55. | :44:04.
suffering from food poisoning. will shortly enter transition for | :44:04. | :44:08.
the penultimate time. The next time they come through, the trophies | :44:08. | :44:13.
will be handed out. The trophies have only just arrived. They got | :44:13. | :44:17.
lost in Hong Kong. They had replacement lined up in case they | :44:17. | :44:23.
didn't arrive. Just in the nick of time they have now -- turned up in | :44:23. | :44:32.
Auckland. There will be something to take away from the event. We | :44:32. | :44:38.
know that Lisa Norden will wrap up the title for 2012. But there is | :44:38. | :44:43.
such a talented group of triathletes. Sarah Groff looks | :44:43. | :44:50.
relaxed, the tall American who kept out of trouble, barely visible on | :44:50. | :44:54.
the 40 kilometre bike ride. She was at the back of the pack for the | :44:54. | :45:00.
entire cycle. She is not in a good position. Jodie Stimpson is in | :45:00. | :45:10.
:45:10. | :45:12. | ||
there, too. The two Germans now, and McIlroy of New Zealand is still | :45:12. | :45:19.
in contention. The host nation is hoping that Andrea Hewitt can | :45:19. | :45:23.
produce a good finish. She is moving towards the front as they | :45:23. | :45:31.
come towards transition. I guess Andrea and Kate Hope the crowd will | :45:31. | :45:37.
lift them in and out on to the final lap. Surely, there has to be | :45:37. | :45:43.
a move soon. Nobody can fill that confident in their sprinting | :45:43. | :45:50.
ability. They take the bell to begin the final lap of the Auckland | :45:50. | :45:57.
Grand Final. The last race of 2012 in the world triathlon series. This | :45:58. | :46:06.
is going to one of 11 or 12. And Jorgensen is desperately trying to | :46:06. | :46:11.
be involved as well. She has got two and a half kilometres, the gap | :46:11. | :46:17.
is too long for her to get in among the podium places. One of the | :46:17. | :46:24.
Germans has been dropped. Maybe this is reminiscent of Kate Allen | :46:24. | :46:31.
at the Olympics when everybody, myself included, I wrote her out. | :46:31. | :46:36.
She had an amazing final run leg. She was two minutes down and came | :46:36. | :46:41.
right back. As you say, a podium would be almost unbelievable but | :46:41. | :46:48.
the way that Jorgensen is running, she is now doing what Sarah Groff | :46:48. | :46:52.
did at the Olympic Games when we said she would not be there. She is | :46:52. | :46:59.
doing just that. Jorgensen, of course, the pace has lifted at the | :46:59. | :47:07.
pack. So it is going to be difficult. Here she comes. She is | :47:07. | :47:17.
:47:17. | :47:20. | ||
about to overtake Knapp. She is shaping up for a bit of a scrap. | :47:20. | :47:24.
Klamer spreading the field across the road. Mascot heads for the | :47:24. | :47:34.
:47:34. | :47:49. | ||
that is a call for her. What does she do when she joins that group? | :47:49. | :47:55.
The temptation, and I guess the sensible thing would be to ease | :47:55. | :48:02.
down. To take a rest. And then to move away again. If she does change | :48:02. | :48:07.
that pace, the difficulty in lifting herself again when she is | :48:07. | :48:13.
already having to work so hard, that pays at the front by Anne Haug, | :48:13. | :48:23.
:48:23. | :48:24. | ||
my goodness me! And Murua has gone right back. Betto has made her | :48:24. | :48:31.
intentions clear and at the moment nobody has attempted to go with her. | :48:31. | :48:39.
-- Haug. She's clenching her fists. Nobody has reacted early on. Sarah | :48:40. | :48:44.
Groff determined that with the tactics she has employed so far she | :48:44. | :48:49.
doesn't want to let her get away. It looks like Jodie Stimpson is | :48:49. | :48:54.
beginning to react. Early times but they will have to try to close her | :48:54. | :49:00.
down because that lead is getting bigger and bigger and bigger. | :49:00. | :49:05.
Jorgensen is almost with the chasing group of seven and she will | :49:05. | :49:10.
join from in a few seconds. Anne Haug has kicked away and made this | :49:10. | :49:15.
race her own. She looks very comfortable. She was second last | :49:15. | :49:22.
time out. She was 4th in Stockholm. She has run a sensible race. And | :49:22. | :49:28.
the gap is now getting on for 10 seconds. But Anne Haug has opened | :49:28. | :49:34.
up, she has moved in front, the New Zealand supporters have seen the | :49:34. | :49:39.
black, but as she comes into view, they are disappointed to see the | :49:39. | :49:48.
German and not there New Zealander. -- the New Zealander. It is Anne | :49:48. | :49:55.
Haug who leads the race. She left it until the last quarter of the | :49:55. | :50:01.
run. That move away has been absolutely emphatic. It doesn't | :50:01. | :50:06.
look like we're getting a strong response at all. The group working | :50:07. | :50:11.
together, Sarah Groff moving to the front, but there hasn't been that | :50:11. | :50:15.
change of pace injected by Sam Ratchford. Very brave to go that | :50:15. | :50:24.
early but it just could have paid off for her. Sarah Groff and | :50:24. | :50:30.
Riveros currently sharing the honours in second but our leader is | :50:30. | :50:35.
Anne Haug. And she will get a very good idea of the gap that she has | :50:35. | :50:41.
created for herself here. Jorgensen is with the chasers. She could get | :50:41. | :50:49.
on the podium. That is 16, maybe 18 seconds, and that is very big. And, | :50:49. | :50:57.
yes, Jorgensen could be on the podium. Barbara Riveros Diaz and | :50:57. | :51:04.
Sprint, so can Lisa Norden, Jodie Stimpson as well. And now Klamer | :51:04. | :51:12.
has tried to go with Jorgensen. Jorgensen is in 4th place. Anne | :51:12. | :51:21.
Haug is clear of them. Jorgensen and Lisa Norden and Jodie Stimpson | :51:21. | :51:28.
are trying to maintain their grip on this group. It is so tight. | :51:28. | :51:32.
Barbara Riveros Diaz has come through, Jorgensen has come through | :51:32. | :51:42.
:51:42. | :51:42. | ||
into second place. Klamer and showing a little bit of fatigue. | :51:42. | :51:46.
Stimpson has recovered. So, Jorgensen going through and we | :51:46. | :51:51.
could see Stimpson and Norden closing in on Barbara Riveros Diaz. | :51:51. | :51:58.
Will they be able to take a? I don't know. Stimpson is moving away | :51:58. | :52:07.
from Klamer. If Haug loses it, if she runs out of steam, Jorgensen | :52:07. | :52:12.
could win this, remarkably. I'm not sure that will happen because she | :52:12. | :52:17.
looks pretty good at this stage, but it is the sort of situation | :52:17. | :52:26.
that does arise from time to time, as Alistair Brownlee found out to | :52:26. | :52:30.
destroy his chances of winning at Hyde Park a couple of years ago. | :52:30. | :52:37.
Jorgensen is spreading them out. She is in second. This is our | :52:37. | :52:44.
leader, Anne Haug. She is moving away. Norden has made the reaction | :52:44. | :52:47.
but for the first time, of Stimpson is staying -- is finding it | :52:47. | :52:52.
difficult to stay with the pace. The cadence of Barbara Riveros Diaz | :52:52. | :52:57.
and Jorgensen is very high indeed. They are trying to chase down Anne | :52:57. | :53:01.
Haug but I think they are going to run out of distance before they run | :53:01. | :53:06.
out of time. But for Lisa Norden to be in 4th position at the moment | :53:06. | :53:09.
when the pace is up, that is surprising but showing no sign of | :53:09. | :53:19.
Children's Hospice -- no sign of weakness at all. She has worked so | :53:19. | :53:24.
hard, Anne Haug, she has worked so hard, and she's getting in sight of | :53:24. | :53:29.
that final finish. She is nearly home. There is a significant gap | :53:29. | :53:34.
now to the next three. There are three battling for two Further | :53:34. | :53:41.
places on the podium. It looks as if it will be the first world | :53:41. | :53:46.
triathlon series win for Anne Haug. She has been so close on so many | :53:46. | :53:51.
occasions. 4th in Madrid, 4th in Hamburg, 4th in Stockholm, second | :53:51. | :54:00.
in Yokohama. It is going to be her day. Her timing was exquisite. Two | :54:00. | :54:03.
hours and 10 minutes have gone since the start of this intriguing | :54:03. | :54:12.
race. The Grand Final, the last World Series race of 2012 goes the | :54:12. | :54:22.
:54:22. | :54:22. | ||
way of Germany's Anne Haug in a time of 2:10.50. And Jorgensen | :54:23. | :54:27.
sprints home for an unlikely second position with Barbara Riveros Diaz | :54:27. | :54:35.
finishing third, Norden takes the series title in four today, with a | :54:35. | :54:40.
superb 5th position for Great Britain's Jodie Stimpson. She is 15 | :54:40. | :54:48.
seconds off the pace. Klamer takes 6th ahead of Hewitt and McIlroy, | :54:48. | :54:55.
the two Kiwis, finishing in the top 10. The tactics of Sarah Groff | :54:55. | :55:00.
didn't pay off for her today, 9th position, with Juri Ide, will lead | :55:00. | :55:07.
the run for so long, finishing in 10th spot. A great race for Jodie | :55:07. | :55:11.
Stimpson today. It is not the position but the depth of the field, | :55:11. | :55:15.
the way she reacted, the way she raced right the way through, | :55:15. | :55:20.
absolutely superb. The Lady of the moment, she is exhausted but | :55:20. | :55:24.
delighted. There is a little bit of tears and happiness coming through. | :55:24. | :55:29.
She was not the winner today but, over all, what a fantastic season | :55:29. | :55:33.
she has had. The Olympic silver medal, full credit to Lisa, to do | :55:33. | :55:42.
that when she has been so ill. is the champion of the Triathlon | :55:42. | :55:52.

the withdrawal of Erin Densham. And Anne Haug's victory a move tear up | :57:02. | :57:11.
to second overall. Something to celebrate the other host nation by | :57:11. | :57:19.

Norden. Silver medallist in the Olympics. It so could easily have | :57:55. | :58:01.
been the gold. Any disappointment will be put behind her now as she | :58:01. | :58:04.
accepts the trophy and is crowned the world champion The Two Towers | :58:04. | :58:13.
Congratulations, you have been crowd world champion, how does it | :58:13. | :58:22.
feel? It has not sunk in. It has been amazing. You were told by your | :58:22. | :58:27.
coach you were in hospital last night, how did you carry on? | :58:27. | :58:32.
likelihood of me starting was about this big. The water woke me up. I | :58:32. | :58:38.
did not know if I would be able to pull it together. Al was just going | :58:38. | :58:45.
to hope for the best. I pulled it together. Olympic silver and now | :58:45. | :58:52.
world champion, what kind of the year has it been for you? This is a | :58:52. | :58:57.
breakthrough year. You and Andrea were actually in your own match | :58:57. | :59:03.
race for third and because Erin Densham dropped out, you are now | :59:03. | :59:08.
silver over all? Can you believe it? No come I cannot find the words | :59:08. | :59:16.
for it. It is amazing. My dreams have come true. It is a perfect | :59:16. | :59:22.
season with the perfect highlight. Erin, you were ill going into the | :59:22. | :59:28.
race, what made you pull out in the end? Obviously the fact I was going | :59:28. | :59:34.
backwards at a race of knots. you watch the rest of the race, | :59:34. | :59:38.
what we your emotions? I watched it with frustrations. I have done the | :59:38. | :59:44.
best I can. I did everything I could to get to the start line as | :59:44. | :59:48.
healthy as possible. I have not been able to do the work obviously. | :59:48. | :59:54.
But I have had the best year. This is the first season I have ever | :59:54. | :59:59.
finished in my triathlon career. I have to be happy with that. Jodie, | :59:59. | :00:07.
a top-five finish, congratulations. It is your best result ever? I felt | :00:07. | :00:12.
that the run was easy until the last lap. I was just thinking, I am | :00:12. | :00:17.
still here. What has been the change, is it changing your | :00:17. | :00:23.
coaching team? I think Darren Smith is the change. He has given me my | :00:23. | :00:32.
confidence back. He believes in me and given me my normal self- back. | :00:32. | :00:38.
This being the world triathlon series Grand Final, there are lots | :00:38. | :00:44.
of events going on. What championships in Paris triathlon. | :00:44. | :00:48.
The under 23 is have been going for glory on the same course as the | :00:48. | :00:53.
lead. Great Britain has a world champion. At the chasing down the | :00:53. | :01:02.
lead pack early on, he ended on -- she ended up in a tool with the | :01:02. | :01:07.
Dutch runner. It was toe to go until a car long enough to go. The | :01:08. | :01:14.
other Brits, Lucy Thorpe and there was Rossendale came in 8th and 21st | :01:14. | :01:17.
respectively. Congratulations, you are the under | :01:18. | :01:27.
23 world champion. I cannot believe it. We have had some tough times, I | :01:27. | :01:33.
am delighted. You are a double world champion with the mixed relay | :01:33. | :01:38.
championships in Stockholm, what a year? It you said a year ago I | :01:38. | :01:43.
would have got on the podium twice, I wouldn't have believed do. I | :01:43. | :01:49.
cannot thank the team and everybody. I know it is cheesy, but everybody | :01:49. | :01:57.
contributes. Without them, I wouldn't be here. In the men's | :01:57. | :02:02.
under 23 is, Tom Bishop was aiming to better last year's bronze medal, | :02:02. | :02:10.
but he matched the result. The 2000 the 11 under 23, Matt Sharp came in | :02:10. | :02:19.
in 6th place. Well done Thomas. was inevitable, I tried to burn it | :02:19. | :02:25.
out of them, and I tried my hardest. It was the best I could do. It has | :02:25. | :02:31.
been a good weekend for the British athletes. That is how we train, we | :02:31. | :02:38.
train from the front. There is still one more world title left on | :02:38. | :02:42.
offer. The one that currently belongs to Alistair Brownlee. He | :02:42. | :02:45.
has not raced in of the season to stay world champion, but his | :02:45. | :02:50.
younger brother is more than happy to take his place. Jonathan | :02:50. | :02:53.
Brownlee has had such a great season he does not need a victory | :02:53. | :02:58.
in Auckland, he just has to get onto the podium. But in true style, | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:27. | ||
he is going for a win, to cap what It is my home away from home. I | :03:27. | :03:34.
have my coach, my training partner from Leeds, and my grandmother. | :03:34. | :03:40.
That is the way I like it will stop a happy athlete is a successful | :03:40. | :03:45.
athletes. I think the key to this year has been consistency. It has | :03:45. | :03:49.
been a long year with the Olympics. It is a month later than it would | :03:49. | :03:55.
be normally. We have made sure he recovers as well as possible. | :03:55. | :03:58.
become world champion would be special. It is something I have | :03:58. | :04:02.
never done before and something I have dreamt about. But it will be | :04:02. | :04:08.
overshadowed by the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games or was massive in | :04:08. | :04:12.
British sport and nothing will ever beaten that day. But to become | :04:12. | :04:17.
world champion is special. I was special in the world junior | :04:17. | :04:21.
championships. So to be the world senior champion would be great. | :04:22. | :04:25.
is a progression, but we have got to get through the weekend and he | :04:25. | :04:30.
has a job to do. That is all the is focusing on at the moment. I have | :04:30. | :04:35.
been in New Zealand the 10 days. I have enjoyed my training. I'm | :04:35. | :04:39.
looking forward to racing now and doing well. Finishing the season | :04:39. | :04:43.
and becoming world champion would be great. But it has been a | :04:43. | :04:47.
difficult year. You don't have to win in New Zealand to become world | :04:48. | :04:52.
champion, you just need to get on the podium. Do you think this is | :04:52. | :04:58.
yours to lose in a way? Yes, because I do realise I only have to | :04:59. | :05:06.
come third. If Javier Gomez wins, I only have to come third. I don't | :05:06. | :05:10.
want to run round thinking about the maths. I just want to race a | :05:11. | :05:19.
normal race and hopefully I will get a podium. | :05:19. | :05:23.
He people expect me to get on the podium and become world champion. | :05:23. | :05:28.
But I am used to dealing with pressure. The home Olympics this | :05:28. | :05:32.
year was a great experiment for this race and a trial run for | :05:32. | :05:37.
dealing with the pressure. This is the first year he has not had his | :05:37. | :05:43.
older brother looking out for him. Jonathan has matured as an athlete. | :05:43. | :05:50.
In Stockholm, and he was no where around. But Jonathan never blinked | :05:50. | :05:55.
and got on with the job. He knows how to boss a race now and how | :05:55. | :06:00.
tactically to operate in a race. He knows he does not need necessarily | :06:00. | :06:06.
to have his brother to help him along. Alastair is such a strong | :06:06. | :06:12.
athlete, and the races go how he wants them to. A lot of the time, I | :06:12. | :06:17.
am following him. It is less pressure when he is not here, | :06:17. | :06:22.
because I enjoyed the way I have to react and pushing the pace. I enjoy | :06:22. | :06:28.
the fact people expect me to win, I enjoyed that excitement. | :06:28. | :06:38.
:06:38. | :06:41. | ||
COMMENTATOR: Jonathan Brownlee is the champion of the world. | :06:41. | :06:51.
:06:51. | :06:54. | ||
He is appendix had to come out. He is on a track at the moment up some | :06:54. | :06:59.
mountain some were in Chile. One of the reasons they are as good as | :06:59. | :07:03.
they are, they just loved it. If the cameras were not rolling and | :07:03. | :07:07.
there was no prize money, they just love doing what they do. They are | :07:07. | :07:10.
pushing themselves to the limit. Getting out into the countryside | :07:11. | :07:16.
and training hard. They are totally committed at all times. But they | :07:16. | :07:21.
also relax and have fun. It shows everyone in our training group that | :07:21. | :07:29.
at the end of the day you get out what you put in. What about you as | :07:29. | :07:33.
a team around him, what would it mean to see him become world | :07:33. | :07:38.
champion? I have been working with him for four years. So to see him | :07:38. | :07:43.
come through and to achieve that, is fantastic. He is the right for | :07:43. | :07:47.
world champion this year. I see him every day training, he is | :07:47. | :07:53.
incredible to watch. He is looking fast, so I think by the end of this | :07:53. | :07:57.
went -- weekend, Jonathan Brownlee could be the world champion. | :07:57. | :08:01.
man who separate the Brownlee brothers on the Olympic podium is | :08:01. | :08:06.
the main threat to Jonathan this weekend. But Javier Gomez would | :08:06. | :08:11.
have to hit some bad luck to become world champion for about its -- | :08:11. | :08:16.
third time. He is 180 points behind the leader. Even if he topped the | :08:16. | :08:23.
Auckland podium, he would only win the series over all if Jonathan | :08:23. | :08:29.
finished 4th or below. AlexanderBryukhankov has been | :08:29. | :08:39.
:08:39. | :08:58. | ||
The how was Christchurch training with Andrea Hewitt? It was great | :08:58. | :09:05.
training with them. It is a good place for running, great place for | :09:05. | :09:10.
swimming so we had everything we needed. When we came home, Javier | :09:11. | :09:16.
Gomez came home with us, and it has been great because we have all been | :09:16. | :09:22.
training for this event. He was very good. Organised some rides and | :09:22. | :09:27.
he fitted in well. How are you feeling going into the 2012 Grand | :09:27. | :09:34.
we are looking forward to having some holidays. But it is the last | :09:34. | :09:40.
race and I had my chances to be the world champion. It gives me | :09:40. | :09:44.
motivation to have a good race. Tell us about the setback you had | :09:44. | :09:50.
before you go hammer, the training with your injury? It was a tough | :09:50. | :09:55.
time. I sprained my ankle warming up for the national championships | :09:56. | :10:01.
and it was a couple of weeks with no running. It was hard, but | :10:01. | :10:05.
luckily I recovered well. The last few weeks of training had been good. | :10:05. | :10:12.
I may not be 100% or at my best figures, but I am OK. He still | :10:12. | :10:16.
managed to come second in Japan but you are not as close to Jonathan in | :10:16. | :10:21.
the rankings as you would like to have been? I wanted to win in Japan, | :10:21. | :10:25.
and to get closer to Jonathan's. But the situation was with my | :10:25. | :10:33.
injury. Second place was OK. It was a very good Ripper -- result. Now I | :10:33. | :10:37.
had some points and a bit less than him. You never know what can happen. | :10:37. | :10:43.
It is difficult, he has been on the podium for the last 17 races. He | :10:43. | :10:46.
should be out of the podium for this one if I want to win the title. | :10:46. | :10:51.
But we have to race and see what happens. Are you ready? Yes, I | :10:51. | :11:01.
:11:01. | :11:08. | ||
Now we are all poised and ready for the Grand Final race. | :11:08. | :11:14.
It is a wet afternoon in Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand | :11:14. | :11:24.
:11:24. | :11:28. | ||
as we get set for the elite men's swim between Queens Wharf and | :11:28. | :11:34.
Cook's Wharf. Then they had got on the bike, five kilometres on each | :11:34. | :11:39.
of the eight laps, taking them through the corner of Albert Park. | :11:39. | :11:45.
Some stiff climbs thrown in. With the wet weather, it is going to be | :11:45. | :11:54.
tough today. The course finishes with four 2.5 kilometre lapse on | :11:54. | :12:01.
foot, the 10 kilometre run to round things off. Jonathan Brownlee wears | :12:01. | :12:11.
:12:11. | :12:26. | ||
British competitor to Dave. Adam Bowden is also in it, and Mark | :12:26. | :12:31.
Buckingham, too. There is the starting line-up at the bottom of | :12:31. | :12:40.
your screen. The triathletes are wearing wetsuits. There they are. | :12:40. | :12:50.
:12:50. | :13:03. | ||
And the hacker welcomes them what has been a fantastic season | :13:03. | :13:11.
for him and his brother? He is absent here because he had an | :13:11. | :13:15.
emergency appendectomy a while ago. The Olympic champion, he will be | :13:15. | :13:20.
watching closely now as his younger brother Brendan Sexton, who took | :13:20. | :13:27.
bronze at the Olympics attempts to become the world triathlon series | :13:27. | :13:32.
champion for 2012. He leads the standings and he will be one of the | :13:32. | :13:36.
leaders as they dive off the pontoon and begin to attack the | :13:36. | :13:46.
:13:46. | :13:47. | ||
first lap. They will exit the water before diving back in again. And we | :13:47. | :13:51.
have a couple of packs starting to form. The official statistics show | :13:51. | :13:55.
the air temperature of 14.5 with the water temperature slightly | :13:55. | :14:05.
warmer than that, hence the wetsuits are compulsory. What will | :14:05. | :14:09.
Jonathan's tactics be? Looking at what happened in the swim yesterday | :14:09. | :14:14.
with the women's, it was quite brutal. That pack split early on in | :14:14. | :14:19.
the swim and when they had established the breakaway, that was | :14:19. | :14:25.
it set, and they couldn't catch up. What Johnny needs to do and his | :14:25. | :14:28.
great rival Javier Gomez, they will be content to get in with the | :14:28. | :14:36.
leaders, and we can expect Richard Varga to be there. He needs to be | :14:36. | :14:41.
their very high up so he can try to establish his place in the cycle | :14:41. | :14:47.
discipline. But, really, for Jonathan Brownlee, he needs to be | :14:47. | :14:53.
there. Also watch out for Alexander Bryukhankov, a powerful athlete. He | :14:53. | :15:02.
has got an outside chance. But he needs circumstances to be such that | :15:02. | :15:06.
Javier Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee are nowhere near the podium. To be | :15:06. | :15:14.
honest, unless the weather or mechanical favours -- failures come | :15:14. | :15:22.
into play, it is really Javier Gomez verses Jonathan Brownlee. | :15:22. | :15:28.
There are three groups that have formed. The man out in front is | :15:28. | :15:32.
Richard Varga. You may remember him from the Olympic triathlon, the | :15:32. | :15:38.
very strong swimmer who was out of the water first, and he set the | :15:38. | :15:45.
pace on 7th August. He is doing the same today. Richard Varga from | :15:45. | :15:52.
Slovakia, number 25 has left quite a gap now between him and the next | :15:52. | :15:57.
bet as he heads towards that top yellow buoy. There are two on the | :15:57. | :16:07.
right of your screen. They come back around the yellow buoy and | :16:07. | :16:12.
back towards the pontoon where they run along briefly and dive back | :16:12. | :16:18.
into commends the second lap. He is comfortably the best swimmer, Varga. | :16:19. | :16:24.
It is a big lead. That is about 10 metres with not even a quarter of | :16:24. | :16:31.
the swim done. Just to confirm that, he has gone out very fast indeed. I | :16:31. | :16:36.
think perhaps we are very plain -- very much playing the waiting game. | :16:36. | :16:40.
They are looking to see what kind of blind Varga is taking and they | :16:40. | :16:47.
will be picking up with him as they get nearer the second buoy. I will | :16:47. | :16:54.
be surprised if he sits out there all the way. It made the difference | :16:54. | :16:59.
in the Olympic women's laced -- race but he has a huge advantage. | :16:59. | :17:07.
He will come around here on his own. Yesterday, the top and swell gave | :17:07. | :17:12.
us argy-bargy. Expect the same. There was lots of ducking and | :17:12. | :17:16.
diving yesterday and some guys are getting caught under that | :17:16. | :17:20.
inflatable. The life-savers are nearby and hopefully they will not | :17:20. | :17:27.
be needed but it is a real scramble. We have some hands on heads and | :17:27. | :17:33.
orange hats getting pushed underneath. And that buoy has, | :17:34. | :17:38.
thankfully, lifted to reveal no damage has been done and everybody | :17:38. | :17:42.
is second -- is heading towards the second term. It is one of the most | :17:42. | :17:48.
chaotic terms we have seen, and it is all down to the prevailing wind | :17:48. | :17:55.
which blows the swimmers against the buoy and into each other. It is | :17:55. | :18:02.
a little wild out there. It is a tough first win then it appears. As | :18:02. | :18:08.
we saw them are approaching the first buoy. So many swimmers seemed | :18:08. | :18:13.
-- seemed to be forced to the right hand side. They would not choose | :18:13. | :18:19.
that by any means at all. Richard Varga is in front. Jonathan | :18:19. | :18:26.
Brownlee has decided he will try to close the gap to Richard Varga. | :18:26. | :18:31.
There he is, with that clear daylight now between the rest of | :18:31. | :18:36.
the chasing group. You can see it clearly from the helicopter shot. | :18:36. | :18:41.
They are snaking away, the wind blowing them off course. Richard | :18:41. | :18:43.
Varga is in front and Jonathan Brownlee has made a determined | :18:43. | :18:49.
effort to get close to the breakaway swimmer. It is great to | :18:49. | :18:53.
see Jonathan Brownlee there. He has seen the danger gone for it, and if | :18:53. | :18:57.
they stay away from this, we could see something working on the bike | :18:57. | :19:07.
:19:07. | :19:07. | ||
in the early stages. So, Varga and Brownlee in front. They have under | :19:07. | :19:13.
1,000 metres to swim. It is brave to go away at this early stage and | :19:13. | :19:19.
it is very brave for Brownlee to see the danger. We expect Varga to | :19:19. | :19:24.
be there, but rather than staying in the safety of the pack, Brownlee | :19:24. | :19:29.
has chosen to go for it. It is a big gap at the moment with over | :19:29. | :19:38.
half a swim to go. Varga will arrive at the pontoon first with | :19:38. | :19:42.
Jonathan Brownlee a couple of seconds behind him. Up the ramp | :19:42. | :19:48.
goes Varga. He slips slightly. He has a glance over his shoulder and | :19:48. | :19:52.
he is surprised to see Brownlee with him. Away they go for the | :19:52. | :20:02.
second lap. We will see how far Javier Gomez is behind. So, clearly, | :20:02. | :20:09.
Jonathan Brownlee and Varga are in good position. Then there was a | :20:09. | :20:14.
group of 10 and more arriving on the pontoon to dive in and begin | :20:14. | :20:24.
:20:24. | :20:27. | ||
the second lap. Adam Bowden and McNamee are in that group. Justus | :20:27. | :20:34.
isn't are behind. We will look out for the other British athletes. | :20:35. | :20:41.
Aaron Harris coming in 30 seconds of the pace. So, it is Varga and | :20:41. | :20:50.
Brownlee in front. Number 18, Maik Petzold is at the front of the | :20:50. | :20:56.
chase group. It puts a different complexion on series now with | :20:56. | :20:59.
Brownlee. I would have thought that only five athletes brave enough to | :20:59. | :21:04.
get out the front and may be tried to go for it by themselves and | :21:04. | :21:09.
Jonathan Brownlee will be one of those. You think that if | :21:09. | :21:17.
Bryukhankov had gone out with them or one of the tough bike riders | :21:17. | :21:23.
would have made go, and whether Richard Varga will be brave enough | :21:23. | :21:29.
to go with Brownlee because his cycling is good but certainly not | :21:30. | :21:34.
on the hills. And if Brownlee goes and makes the break, he is going to | :21:35. | :21:39.
be in a great position to be out in front with over an hour and a half | :21:39. | :21:44.
in front. It will be tough for him, but he will be calling in to play | :21:44. | :21:48.
that Yorkshire grit. They were talking about the Olympic Games. If | :21:48. | :21:53.
Yorkshire was a nation, they would have been in the top 10 nations. | :21:53. | :21:57.
Good for Jonathan Brownlee. He has chased after -- he has chased after | :21:57. | :22:07.
:22:07. | :22:10. | ||
Richard Varga. Now they come out from behind the shelter of Queen's | :22:10. | :22:17.
Wharf and they hit a bit of swell and they can be pushed off course. | :22:17. | :22:23.
I tell you what, that lead to me seems around 35 metres. If that | :22:23. | :22:28.
continues, they are going to be taking a 32nd advantage into | :22:28. | :22:34.
transition. I know it is early stages, and I know it is a three- | :22:34. | :22:38.
part race right the way through, but we have seen Jonathan Brownlee | :22:38. | :22:42.
before where he has had the guts to go not by himself but with only the | :22:42. | :22:45.
way pack and also he has been prepared to do so much work. If he | :22:46. | :22:54.
has made that decision to go with Varga... It was a conscious | :22:54. | :23:02.
decision to go out there. As think he's thinking that with these tough | :23:02. | :23:07.
conditions, maybe this would be the one to try to go from the front. | :23:07. | :23:12.
Here we go, time for trouble at the turn off. One or two of them | :23:12. | :23:17.
sneaking under the yellow buoy and we hope they all emerge from there. | :23:17. | :23:23.
Again, hands on heads, ducking and diving, squabbling, elbows and arms | :23:23. | :23:28.
everywhere, goggles may have been knocked off, some swimming caps | :23:28. | :23:34.
knocked off, this is a really dangerous situation in the waters | :23:34. | :23:42.
of Auckland. There is one more time to come. The German, Maik Petzold, | :23:42. | :23:47.
in third position, he has got no worries but it is at this point | :23:47. | :23:50.
when the middle of the pack come through that things start to get | :23:50. | :24:00.
:24:00. | :24:11. | ||
coming through, he got it right between the eyes. We know that | :24:11. | :24:21.
:24:21. | :24:22. | ||
Varga is a one-trick pony because he has led out of the water, but he | :24:22. | :24:27.
is yet to register a top 10 finish. So he does leave it all in the | :24:27. | :24:32.
water. He might get a toe, and you will get some encouragement from | :24:32. | :24:39.
Jonathan Brownlee and with the wet conditions, Brownlee will be happy | :24:39. | :24:44.
to be in a small pack when they are on the bikes. What they do not want | :24:44. | :24:50.
is to be in a group of 25 or 30 heading out on two wheels on the | :24:50. | :24:54.
wet roads of Auckland with all the trouble and danger that can ensue | :24:54. | :25:00.
on the tight turns on fast descent. He is thinking ahead, Jonathan | :25:00. | :25:04.
Brownlee, and if he is going to ride alongside Varga, they can stay | :25:04. | :25:10.
out of trouble. This will work in his favour. They head towards the | :25:10. | :25:15.
exit of the swim. I could not agree more. It is a conscious decision to | :25:15. | :25:20.
get away from the pack. If we think back to what we saw in the women's | :25:20. | :25:26.
Olympic race, particularly with the damp conditions, and so many of our | :25:26. | :25:32.
top-class athletes going down on the roads because of the conditions, | :25:32. | :25:37.
it is a big decision. I am looking at that time now, that is a | :25:37. | :25:45.
sensational time! That is a tremendous whim. Less than 17 | :25:45. | :25:55.
:25:55. | :26:12. | ||
coming out of the water, that is so unzipping his wetsuit. You can be | :26:12. | :26:16.
sure Jonathan Brownlee and Richard Varga or will be well into lap | :26:16. | :26:21.
number-one by the time and the rest of the group hit transitions. They | :26:22. | :26:27.
are making their way, Richard Varga in red and white. Jonathan just | :26:27. | :26:34.
behind him. The gap is 32 seconds before we see any sign of a third | :26:34. | :26:44.
:26:44. | :27:01. | ||
British contingent. Javier Gomez in 21st position as he exits the | :27:01. | :27:11.
:27:11. | :27:12. | ||
swimming stage. Aaron Harris coming through 29 seconds off the pace. | :27:12. | :27:16.
There is a scramble and Jonathan Brownlee and Richard Varga are | :27:16. | :27:22.
already out of transition and beginning their first lap. The rest | :27:22. | :27:27.
of them come into transition to pick up their bikes. We have Kris | :27:27. | :27:30.
Gemmell from New Zealand towards the front of that pack. He could be | :27:30. | :27:35.
the danger man because he helped to design this particular course. He | :27:35. | :27:42.
is very strong on his bike. Richard Murray, who is a great runner is | :27:42. | :27:46.
also in the main pack. He is just over a minute down at the moment, | :27:46. | :27:50.
but he could get in Saab into contention by the time they get | :27:50. | :27:59.
into the third discipline. -- himself. Now we are seeing how | :27:59. | :28:05.
tough and difficult the road conditions will be. Will be some | :28:05. | :28:11.
big judgment caused by the big pack chasing these two. Jonathan | :28:11. | :28:14.
Brownlee and Richard Varga, question is, how long can Richard | :28:14. | :28:20.
Varga or stay with Jonathan Brownlee? As Alexander Bryukhankov, | :28:20. | :28:25.
the Russian battles his way through the driving rain. Similar | :28:25. | :28:30.
conditions to what they had in Stockholm, after the Olympics. A | :28:30. | :28:37.
wet day in Sweden, very similar. We are lucky the helicopter can fly. | :28:37. | :28:45.
This was the exit at the end of the 1,500 metre swim with Richard Varga | :28:45. | :28:50.
and Jonathan Brownlee just behind him. I do like watching Alexander | :28:50. | :28:55.
Bryukhankov, he loves putting himself on the line. He will go at | :28:55. | :28:59.
it in the swimming and put himself on the line in the bike sections. I | :28:59. | :29:02.
don't think this section is suited for him but he will give everything | :29:02. | :29:12.
:29:12. | :29:14. | ||
to try to close the gap. This was Jonathan's transitions. Now we can | :29:14. | :29:20.
follow the leaders. You can spot for blue and white suit been warned | :29:20. | :29:26.
by Jonathan Brownlee. Richard Varga of Slovakia just behind him. Greasy | :29:27. | :29:36.
:29:37. | :29:37. | ||
road surface underfoot. There is no use in wearing glasses. These out | :29:37. | :29:43.
and backs have to be handled with care. They go really slow as they | :29:43. | :29:46.
come round the hairpin bend and head out to an uphill sections. | :29:46. | :29:52.
That is what will follow as we get a look at the standings at the end | :29:52. | :30:02.
:30:02. | :30:13. | ||
completing the first of eight, five kilometre loops they will ride | :30:13. | :30:20.
around the streets of Auckland with climbing, some tricky descents, | :30:20. | :30:27.
especially in the wet weather. Two men, keeping out of trouble, | :30:27. | :30:33.
forcing the pace at the front of the field. Broke away on the swim, | :30:33. | :30:38.
now they are reaping the dividends of that a early moves through the | :30:38. | :30:48.
:30:48. | :31:03. | ||
the first lap. Seven to go. And we will get a chase group time check | :31:03. | :31:10.
as well. We will be able to see just how far they are behind. | :31:10. | :31:13.
Jonathan Brownlee well supported this week, he has a huge family | :31:13. | :31:17.
contingent who have made it a trip to the southern hemisphere, | :31:17. | :31:23.
including his grandmother who is in the VIP tent, watching the TV | :31:23. | :31:28.
screen. Apparently she is taking photos of the television screen as | :31:28. | :31:35.
she sees Jonathan coming up. The gap is 22 seconds between Jonathan | :31:35. | :31:39.
Brownlee and Richard Barker and the chasing pack. The chasing group | :31:39. | :31:44.
that led by Kris Gemmell and Javier Gomez, coming through transition at | :31:44. | :31:49.
the end of the first lap. Maybe that is closing a little bit. We | :31:49. | :31:55.
saw the chasing pack spread from 30 seconds plus come up to almost | :31:55. | :31:59.
double that. They seem to have come together a bit more and close down | :31:59. | :32:06.
a few seconds. Still a big gap to close up. A very early stages. | :32:06. | :32:12.
are the leaders on their way down the hill. About halfway through the | :32:12. | :32:18.
second lap. Lots of support for Jonathan Brownlee. Get straight out | :32:18. | :32:24.
of the saddle as he hits the flat. Injects pace into this second lap. | :32:24. | :32:29.
So far Richard Varga is matching him. That is what he needs, a | :32:29. | :32:35.
companion out there. Richard Varga will fade once they hit the run if | :32:35. | :32:40.
they are still out in his front. But Jonathan Meades him to perform | :32:40. | :32:46.
in the early stages of this 40 kilometre cycle. -- needs him. | :32:46. | :32:51.
Richard Varga is able to stay awake with Jonathan Brownlee, if that two | :32:51. | :32:57.
of them can stay, with Javier Gomez putting in a lot of hard work, you | :32:57. | :33:01.
have to think the sort of confident Richard Varga will have if he knows | :33:01. | :33:06.
he can get into the run with a bit of a cushions will stop all the | :33:06. | :33:12.
applause and shouting we are hearing from Jonathan Brownlee is a | :33:13. | :33:19.
huge age group who are focused on the triathlon, to take their | :33:19. | :33:29.
:33:29. | :33:30. | ||
holidays. I had just found under 23 world champion screaming out for | :33:30. | :33:40.
Jonathan Brownlee. Hoping the conditions will play in their | :33:40. | :33:48.
favour. David got a puncture didn't he? It's was amazing, he was in the | :33:48. | :33:51.
chasing group, but he managed to change his back wheel and get back | :33:51. | :33:56.
into the pack. No one knows better how tough it would be in conditions | :33:56. | :34:00.
like this, what would be going through the mind? It is pretty bad. | :34:00. | :34:04.
The main thing is say before stop they want to get around in one | :34:04. | :34:10.
piece without falling off. These corners are slippery. The need to | :34:10. | :34:13.
focus on staying on the bike and working together but mainly getting | :34:13. | :34:19.
round. The weather conditions are worsening all of the time. Rain | :34:19. | :34:24.
levels are approaching torrential. Back with the leaders. We think the | :34:24. | :34:29.
helicopter may have finally had enough and headed for home. It is | :34:29. | :34:34.
probably a wise decision, in view of the creasing -- increasing wind | :34:34. | :34:44.
:34:44. | :34:45. | ||
and driving rain. The leaders, Richard Varga of Slovakia and | :34:45. | :34:48.
Jonathan Brownlee of Great Britain, remain it were they have been since | :34:48. | :34:54.
they excited the water from the swim, out in front. Now they are | :34:54. | :35:00.
hitting the second Hill on this 4th lap of the 40 kilometre bike. The | :35:00. | :35:06.
chasing group are just a handful of seconds behind. Richard Varga and | :35:06. | :35:10.
Jonathan Brownlee are about to be swallowed up into the main pack. | :35:10. | :35:15.
The main pack has shrunk, led by Javier Gomez, with Kris Gemmell in | :35:15. | :35:25.
:35:25. | :35:26. | ||
second. They number about a dozen now. Then the race takes on another | :35:26. | :35:31.
new complexion the stock so the early leader, Richard Varga, a | :35:31. | :35:35.
brave effort to go, also Jonathan Brownlee to cover and stay there. | :35:35. | :35:40.
But now we get this pack coming together. Javier Gomez will have to | :35:41. | :35:44.
make a decision, because he is in a similar situation to Jonathan | :35:44. | :35:49.
Brownlee. However, if he wants to win, he has to make an impact early | :35:49. | :35:54.
on because he has to try to run everything out of Jonathan | :35:54. | :35:59.
Brownlee's legs. Has to persuade Jonathan Brownlee to go with him | :35:59. | :36:04.
and then faltered because he needs a clear positions. He needs to be | :36:04. | :36:09.
first of 4th to take the overall title. By the time they get to | :36:09. | :36:14.
transition halfway through the bike, there will be one large group | :36:14. | :36:18.
formed at the front of the field. Jonathan Brownlee will have to keep | :36:18. | :36:24.
himself out of trouble. He has only had Richard Varga to worry about. | :36:24. | :36:27.
He will have another 10 riders to concern himself with, including | :36:27. | :36:34.
this man, Kris Gemmell, who is getting a warm welcome. The course | :36:34. | :36:44.
:36:44. | :36:59. | ||
designer. Steffen Justus of Germany each other. We have lost David | :36:59. | :37:03.
McNamee and Aaron Harris, who were in the big group when they came out | :37:03. | :37:08.
of the swim. It is an indication the bike pace in the chasing pack | :37:08. | :37:11.
has been huge with Kris Gemmell and Javier Gomez doing much of the work | :37:11. | :37:18.
at the front too close these two down. Kris Gemmell is now leading. | :37:18. | :37:23.
It will be interesting to see what happens. Gomez cannot stay away | :37:23. | :37:30.
from that. It for the first four laps of the race, Jonathan Brownlee | :37:30. | :37:38.
only had Richard Varga for company. He now has Kris Gemmell. And about | :37:38. | :37:48.
:37:48. | :37:48. | ||
another 10 waiting to close the final gap of about 10 metres. The | :37:48. | :37:52.
helicopter is back in the air, giving us these shops. I can only | :37:52. | :37:56.
assume that means potentially the weather is improving. It does | :37:56. | :38:02.
appear from where we are, a little bit brighter. Hopefully those | :38:02. | :38:12.
:38:12. | :38:22. | ||
clouds will keep rolling away. Jonathan Brownlee was easier to | :38:22. | :38:26.
spot from the helicopter. And he was eager to muscle his way to the | :38:26. | :38:32.
front, despite having force the pace almost of this backstage so | :38:32. | :38:37.
far. Now he is inviting them through. He is saying, Javier Gomez, | :38:37. | :38:42.
take your turn up the front. Maybe he will sit tight at the front of | :38:42. | :38:48.
the field and keep himself out of trouble. We have a man down, it is | :38:48. | :38:53.
Brendan Sexton from Australia. He is bravely back on his bike and | :38:53. | :38:59.
trying to get back involved. Brendan Sexton, amazingly, when you | :38:59. | :39:03.
consider the conditions, he is the first man down. That is going to | :39:03. | :39:13.
:39:13. | :39:15. | ||
hurt! Brendan Sexton hits the deck in Auckland. I am it with Mark | :39:15. | :39:19.
Ayres, the performance coach. It is all one big pack? All the leaders | :39:19. | :39:24.
are now at the front, nobody away. The race is from here now with the | :39:24. | :39:29.
group. Gomez had been leading the charge to chase Jonathan, what will | :39:29. | :39:34.
happen now? All the main protagonists for the series are | :39:34. | :39:37.
together. They may just not do anything. They have nobody chasing | :39:38. | :39:41.
men close from behind. But they might be some others, like | :39:41. | :39:47.
Dougherty, Kris Gemmell, home favourites the one to take the rise | :39:47. | :39:51.
on and take it from there. everybody try not to crash, the run | :39:51. | :39:56.
will be even more important? Running will be very strange. The | :39:56. | :40:01.
fun group has been losing it rider's every time the hills are | :40:01. | :40:05.
taking their effect will stop we don't know how much the hills have | :40:05. | :40:09.
taken out of their running legs. Some people have gone and ran fast, | :40:09. | :40:16.
some have ran very slowly. There is a little bit of hustle and bustle | :40:16. | :40:20.
amongst the bikes as they head towards transition at the end of | :40:20. | :40:26.
the 5th lap. Kris Gemmell has moved away from the field. Number 16, in | :40:26. | :40:36.
:40:36. | :40:44. | ||
his opportunity and he needs to get away from Javier Gomez and from | :40:44. | :40:49.
Brownlee. We saw this in the women's race with McIlroy having go | :40:49. | :40:54.
up and hitting transition to be warmly welcomed, a sea of faces and | :40:54. | :40:59.
a wall of noise as they saw that the first -- saw the first rider | :40:59. | :41:07.
through was a local rider. The same will happen for Gemmell. The first | :41:07. | :41:17.
:41:17. | :41:18. | ||
man through is a Kiwi. Kris Gemmell leads the Auckland triathlon, | :41:18. | :41:24.
Jonathan Brownlee in seconds, Javier Gomez is third. Coming | :41:24. | :41:34.
:41:34. | :41:39. | ||
through next, Docherty, then Justus, Fabian, Varga, Tayama, and the word | :41:39. | :41:43.
is that the big Russian, Bryukhankov, has quit to. The only | :41:44. | :41:47.
other man that could potentially win the world triathlon series | :41:47. | :41:52.
title has got off his bike. He has thrown a major tantrum and has | :41:52. | :41:57.
walked away from the field of play. That is all we can tell you. | :41:57. | :42:07.
:42:07. | :42:08. | ||
Bryukhankov is out of the final triathlon series of the year. Kris | :42:08. | :42:12.
Gemmell his first of the out and back. He has a bit of daylight. He | :42:12. | :42:22.
has made his break. Brownlee and Gomez keeping clear of one another. | :42:22. | :42:30.
Good tactics for Gemmell to stave their. He did some work, but he | :42:30. | :42:34.
shared it with Javier Gomez and others. He now has said that this | :42:34. | :42:38.
is opportunity when everyone else is falling back, lulled into a | :42:38. | :42:43.
false sense of security, this is his opportunity to get away. He | :42:43. | :42:48.
seems to met -- to have made a big impact. It is not a token effort, | :42:48. | :42:55.
he has put his head down, he is in foil -- in full possession, and he | :42:55. | :43:00.
is working hard. He has had some good early-season performances | :43:00. | :43:05.
going right the way back to Sydney. He was 7th out there and 10th in | :43:05. | :43:09.
San Diego. It has been a while since we saw the best of Kris | :43:09. | :43:14.
Gemmell. And then the World Championship finals in your own | :43:14. | :43:20.
country, everything, he is giving it everything. The only danger is | :43:20. | :43:28.
that if you push it too hard and go over the edge, you start to pay | :43:28. | :43:33.
with pain. He has made a statement, he has gone for it, and he will | :43:33. | :43:38.
have to start to pull away. If they do catch him, and there is a chance | :43:38. | :43:42.
of that, then he is going to have a little bit of a sense of | :43:42. | :43:50.
frustration before the run. It is not a bad Gamp that he has opened | :43:50. | :43:59.
up. I make it about 16-17 seconds. -- not a bad gap. That is on just | :43:59. | :44:06.
one lap! If he keeps his head down, he will take a handy lead into the | :44:06. | :44:12.
run and he will be a big danger. Kris Gemmell is leading the Grand | :44:12. | :44:19.
Final of the world triathlon series in Auckland as he sweeps downhill | :44:19. | :44:26.
towards the Waterside area and the transition to complete his 6th lap. | :44:26. | :44:31.
He will be warmly welcomed. Two laps to go for the man in black who | :44:31. | :44:41.
:44:41. | :44:52. | ||
has made the break and held the Gemmell and the chasers. They are | :44:52. | :44:56.
on their feet and a grandstand. They may be soaking wet but they | :44:56. | :45:02.
are enthusiastic about what they are witnessing. They had it with | :45:02. | :45:07.
Kate McIlroy in the women's race. It is now Kris Gemmell keeping them | :45:07. | :45:13.
interested in the men's competition. The chasers coming through, in | :45:13. | :45:20.
second place, Steffen Justus from Germany, then Riederer, then | :45:20. | :45:30.
Docherty, then Brownlee, then Gomez, then Jones. Richard Varga is still | :45:30. | :45:38.
involved. Kris Gemmell get some energy drink inside him. And he | :45:38. | :45:47.
heads on his way. This is the start of lap seven. If Chris is to stay | :45:47. | :45:53.
away, he is going to have to get a few extra seconds before Javier | :45:53. | :46:01.
Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee. 23 seconds, he has worked hard. They | :46:01. | :46:06.
will be thinking about that. When it gets over 30, will we see a | :46:06. | :46:16.
:46:16. | :46:24. | ||
water. The pack coming through the triangular section of the course, | :46:24. | :46:30.
furthest away from the ocean. It takes them a little diversion along | :46:30. | :46:34.
Whinfield Street before heading back on to Queen Street. And back | :46:34. | :46:44.
:46:44. | :46:51. | ||
Brownlee who were the two contenders now with the retirement | :46:51. | :46:59.
of Bryukhankov. We only have two contenders of the title. Who will | :46:59. | :47:02.
become world champion? Jonathan Brownlee still looks favoured | :47:02. | :47:07.
because his lead in the standings over Javier Gomez is 180 points, | :47:07. | :47:15.
but with 1,200 for a win, 1110 for a second and 1.027th for third and | :47:15. | :47:21.
then 950 for a 4th and so on with the increments changing, there is | :47:21. | :47:27.
scope for change at the top of the table. And there is a long way to | :47:27. | :47:32.
go. We are a quarter rock -- three- quarters of the way through this | :47:32. | :47:36.
triathlon and it is Kris Gemmell leading the way. He sweeps down | :47:36. | :47:43.
with added speed. The road surface is beginning to dry. We are heading | :47:43. | :47:47.
towards the transition area to take the belt to begin his 8th and final | :47:47. | :47:53.
lap. He's got good speed and lots of support. There is the bell. Kris | :47:54. | :47:58.
Gemmell arrives in transition and grits his teeth as he enjoys this | :47:58. | :48:03.
wall of noise. He goes through the hairpin passed the point when next | :48:03. | :48:13.
time around he will hang up his bike. So far, 1:19.30 have elapsed | :48:13. | :48:19.
for Kris Gemmell in his quest to win this home race in Auckland. | :48:19. | :48:24.
time gap on the previous lap was just 23 seconds. We have hit that | :48:24. | :48:28.
already so he has made a significant move. He is taking out | :48:28. | :48:34.
over half a minute with one lap to play for. There are the tracers in | :48:34. | :48:38.
the back. Jonathan Brownlee goes through second. He is followed by | :48:38. | :48:48.
:48:48. | :48:51. | ||
Javier Gomez and the Swiss, Riederer. Docherty, then Justus, | :48:51. | :49:01.
then the Italian, then Tayama, and the rest. All credit to Kris | :49:01. | :49:06.
Gemmell. I hope you will give himself a big lead. And then the | :49:06. | :49:11.
chasers will need to chase him down second by second. Kris Gemmell | :49:11. | :49:17.
still reading the triathlon. He has put on a courageous display so far. | :49:17. | :49:23.
He has got a little bit more work to do on this bike course. He is on | :49:23. | :49:28.
the 8th and final lap. He will be heading downhill shortly. And then | :49:28. | :49:33.
he will be contemplating his arrival in transition. The chasers | :49:33. | :49:37.
have let him get away confident they will be able to close the gap | :49:37. | :49:42.
when the run commences. Jonathan Brownlee sweeps through ahead of | :49:42. | :49:46.
the chase group. He is closely followed by his main rival Javier | :49:46. | :49:56.
:49:56. | :49:56. | ||
Gomez with the Red Helmut. Riederer is also involved. Number 15 is | :49:56. | :50:03.
Docherty, the second of the New Zealand athletes. And Richard Varga, | :50:03. | :50:08.
who was one of the two men to lead the swim along with Jonathan | :50:09. | :50:13.
Brownlee, has stuck to his path, they he is closest to us, and he | :50:13. | :50:19.
has remained with this chase group. A good race for Richard Varga so | :50:19. | :50:26.
far. I think Richard will be delighted for that. He has worked | :50:26. | :50:33.
so hard. He put himself on the line. He put himself on the line. He | :50:33. | :50:38.
isn't a great situation going into the run. He has not featured that | :50:38. | :50:43.
highly over all, but maybe this is the one. It would be lovely to see | :50:43. | :50:53.
:50:53. | :51:05. | ||
man with the Black Strip and the silver helmet, Kris Gemmell. The | :51:05. | :51:11.
other rider is a back marker about to be lapped and Riederer is | :51:11. | :51:21.
:51:21. | :51:22. | ||
working hard. -- Gemmell is working hard. Sato of Japan will see | :51:22. | :51:30.
Gemmell going past him. Now, can he maintains this pace on the final | :51:30. | :51:38.
part of this eight slap? And give himself a springboard as he hits | :51:38. | :51:48.
:51:48. | :51:48. | ||
the first lap on the run? He has an injection of pace, he will put his | :51:48. | :51:56.
running shoes on. Kris Gemmell heading back towards the waterfront | :51:56. | :52:02.
with a decent lead over the chasers. How long can he stay out in front? | :52:02. | :52:06.
Of this crowd, here in their thousands around the streets of | :52:06. | :52:11.
Auckland are hoping he can hold off the attention of the chasers and | :52:11. | :52:15.
bring home a victory for the home nation. His feet are out of their | :52:15. | :52:20.
shoes. He is out before the dismount line and he splashes | :52:20. | :52:25.
through the puddles towards his position in transition. He will | :52:25. | :52:31.
pick up his running shoes and head out for the first of four 2.5 | :52:31. | :52:40.
kilometre lapse. Gemmell parks up his bike and will hope for a smooth | :52:40. | :52:46.
and fast transition. That is what he's got. He picks up his cap. It | :52:46. | :52:52.
will be soaking wet. He heads on his way out of transition. 10 | :52:52. | :53:00.
kilometres to go for Kris Gemmell. All eyes on the Kiwi now. He is | :53:00. | :53:07.
well on his way before the trees group get anywhere near transition. | :53:07. | :53:14.
-- the chase group. Jonathan Brownlee leading them through. He | :53:14. | :53:19.
makes no mistake getting off his bike. He heads towards his marker | :53:19. | :53:29.
:53:29. | :53:33. | ||
with Javier Gomez and all the rest in close order. There are a total | :53:33. | :53:40.
of 12 in this chase group. 13 out on the run so far. Jonathan | :53:40. | :53:44.
Brownlee number one in the world, the leader in the standings drops | :53:44. | :53:50.
his helmet and sprints away from transition. He is closely followed | :53:50. | :53:59.
-- followed and shadowed by Javier Gomez. The clip is stuck on | :53:59. | :54:05.
Polyanskiy's helmet. Just a glimpse of Richard Murray coming in the | :54:05. | :54:10.
chase pack. He is the strongest run-up on the beauteous circuit | :54:10. | :54:19.
along with Brownlee and Gomez. As we saw yesterday, it is not | :54:19. | :54:22.
impossible to come through the back and take yourself through, but | :54:22. | :54:29.
Gemmell coming through in over a minute's lead. Brownlee leading the | :54:29. | :54:33.
pack, but everyone is going to try to stay with him. One whole minute | :54:33. | :54:39.
to catch up, that is a huge gap. We have seen the running abilities of | :54:39. | :54:43.
jolly along with his brother right through the last couple of seasons | :54:43. | :54:49.
so this is going to be fascinating. That was Johnny getting off his | :54:49. | :54:54.
bike just before the dismount line. It was a mistake on the dismount in | :54:54. | :55:02.
the Olympics that forced him into that 15 seconds stop-go penalty. | :55:02. | :55:05.
This was in coming out of transition and this is the man he | :55:05. | :55:11.
is chasing next to the motorcycle. Kris Gemmell is our leader from New | :55:11. | :55:16.
Zealand. He has kept enough in reserve to give himself a good kick | :55:16. | :55:23.
at the start of this run. The gap will be shortening all the time. He | :55:23. | :55:28.
hasn't completed the first kilometre yet. Gemmell, it is not | :55:29. | :55:34.
long before he has got these guys breathing down his neck. Jonathan | :55:34. | :55:39.
Brownlee, gliding down across the road surface in Auckland. Javier | :55:39. | :55:45.
Gomez, third over all, with the Swiss, Riederer behind him. They | :55:45. | :55:50.
are running as a group. Their target, their prey, is the man in | :55:50. | :55:57.
front, Kris Gemmell. I thought we might have seen Justus coming up | :55:57. | :56:02.
very fast so perhaps Jonathan Brownlee has seized the initiative | :56:02. | :56:09.
and on fast. Let's see what happens with Richard Murray. We think they | :56:09. | :56:14.
are 15 seconds behind the chase back. We are with animal not -- | :56:14. | :56:22.
Kris Gemmell. Just how much fatigue as that taken with that huge effort | :56:22. | :56:32.
:56:32. | :56:46. | ||
on the second half of the bike -- Kris Gemmell hits this section. | :56:46. | :56:50.
Encouragement from the crowd, they cannot see any of his main rival | :56:50. | :57:00.
:57:00. | :57:00. | ||
has yet. I would certainly say Kris Gemmell is running well. No | :57:00. | :57:08.
apparent sign of fatigue. He is down! My word, Kris Gemmell down on | :57:08. | :57:14.
his knees. I think he is back on his feet quickly. I think he | :57:14. | :57:18.
clipped one of the stands at the base of these metal barriers that | :57:18. | :57:23.
line the course. He might have a couple of cuts on his knees. He is | :57:23. | :57:29.
going along way round, trying to keep himself on course. Had to hang | :57:29. | :57:37.
on to a tree. I think it is just a little bit of this orientation. | :57:37. | :57:43.
Goodness me. Kris Gemmell suddenly lost his sense of direction. | :57:43. | :57:53.
:57:53. | :57:53. | ||
Slipped on one of those pedestrian walkways, I think they are. Then he | :57:53. | :57:57.
was disorientated. He should have gone straight out and back around | :57:57. | :58:04.
the cones, but headed off and swung himself a round via a treat. Now | :58:04. | :58:12.
you can see he has got some company. Kris Gemmell is not going to have | :58:12. | :58:22.
this his own way. Jonathan Brownlee, Javier Gomez and Sven Riederer are | :58:22. | :58:30.
closing the gap all of the time. That is quite amazing. To get | :58:30. | :58:37.
anywhere near on the first lap of 2.5 kilometres, when we have that | :58:37. | :58:41.
time difference of just around a minute coming out of transition. | :58:41. | :58:45.
Even with the fall from Kris Gemmell, I don't think he lost that | :58:45. | :58:50.
much time. I think it was the disorientation, the lack of focus | :58:51. | :58:55.
and concentration. Kris Gemmell coming from the top of your screen | :58:55. | :59:02.
it to the bottom. Three guys chasing him are now turning. They | :59:02. | :59:08.
are closing him. It is no where near a minute, less than 30 seconds | :59:08. | :59:14.
coming through now. It is early days in the race. We said Sven | :59:14. | :59:19.
Riederer could be one of the danger man, he is such a strong runner, he | :59:19. | :59:25.
proved that last year in Beijing. But the two men we have been | :59:25. | :59:29.
talking about right the way through, the early leader, Jonathan Brownlee | :59:29. | :59:36.
went away with Richard Varga. And now along with Sven Riederer, | :59:36. | :59:41.
closing in at this early stage on Chris go Merck -- Kris Gemmell. I | :59:41. | :59:51.
:59:51. | :59:55. | ||
will be interesting to see what do runner split is from this. It is | :59:56. | :00:01.
unbelievable. It is tremendously fast running. Question is, can Kris | :00:01. | :00:06.
Gemmell stay with these three when they are breathing down his neck? | :00:06. | :00:13.
It won't be long before they are right behind the Kiwi's shoulder. | :00:13. | :00:17.
Kris Gemmell leads the way. The three behind him are Jonathan | :00:17. | :00:27.
:00:27. | :00:27. | ||
Brownlee, Sven Riederer and Javier Gomez. We are not too far off the | :00:27. | :00:35.
end of the first lap. But to close a minute, well, 40 seconds a mile, | :00:35. | :00:41.
that is what are they are doing on one of the best athletes in the | :00:41. | :00:48.
world. Truly sensational, worthy of a World Championship final. Head- | :00:48. | :00:51.
to-head between Javier Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee this year have | :00:51. | :00:56.
been interesting. We all know about the Olympics were Jonathan had the | :00:56. | :00:59.
penalty and ended up with the bronze medal with Gomez taking the | :00:59. | :01:07.
silver. But in world triathlon series that terms, Gomez has not | :01:07. | :01:12.
beaten Jonathan. Jonathan mods first in Stockholm, Gomez was | :01:12. | :01:20.
second. In kits build, Alastair one and Gomez was second and Jonathan | :01:21. | :01:25.
was third. That are the only other triathlon series races they have | :01:25. | :01:32.
taken part in together. Outside that series and the race in America, | :01:32. | :01:36.
the big money raised, Gomez was absolutely stunning in that | :01:36. | :01:42.
performance. -- big money race. Despite the head-to-head situation, | :01:42. | :01:47.
it is too close to call at the moment. Absolutely, at the moment | :01:47. | :01:55.
Kris Gemmell has been dropped. It won't be a home win today. Jonathan | :01:55. | :02:02.
Brownlee, along with Gomez and Sven Riederer are at the front of the | :02:02. | :02:08.
field. Someone who loves Jonathan Brownlee. Heading back towards the | :02:08. | :02:16.
water to complete the half-distance on the run. Gomez, Jonathan | :02:16. | :02:20.
Brownlee and Sven Riederer are still very tightly bunched. The | :02:20. | :02:26.
others are fighting for the minor places. Two laps to go. It is down | :02:26. | :02:34.
to a 5,000-metre fought race. Steffen Justus has moved up into | :02:34. | :02:39.
4th position. He was third in Hamburg. He is a good runner, he | :02:39. | :02:46.
has had some solid results this season. He is in third position, | :02:46. | :02:56.
:02:56. | :03:04. | ||
Surrey 4th position here. Ivan Rana is just behind him. Jones has | :03:04. | :03:09.
really come through in this race. There is Kris Gemmell, who had the | :03:09. | :03:14.
heroics on the bike earlier. He has been passed by endless opponents, | :03:15. | :03:24.
including David McNamee you has gone past Kris Gemmell. Javier | :03:24. | :03:29.
Gomez at the front of the race. With Jonathan Brownlee on his | :03:29. | :03:37.
shoulder. Sven Riederer, last time we checked it was in close. Still | :03:37. | :03:47.

is. They have been joined by Raphael. I think he is one lap down. | :03:56. | :04:02.
I think Gomez is attempting to force gradually, but there is no | :04:02. | :04:07.
impact on Jonathan Brownlee whatsoever. Sven Riederer it is | :04:07. | :04:12.
that ungainly style, his head bobbing round, but the cadence is | :04:12. | :04:16.
still good. Still on a par with Jonathan and Gomez as they go | :04:16. | :04:26.
:04:26. | :04:27. | ||
through. Gomez has moved forward, trying to up the pace. They will | :04:28. | :04:33.
all be happy that the torrential rain and the driving wind has eased | :04:33. | :04:43.

:05:37. | :05:39. | ||
That was in April. Looking at a rally in Raphael, staying with the | :05:39. | :05:46.
leaders. It must be something Steffen Justus can see here. Maybe | :05:46. | :05:51.
he is thinking he has can miscalculated. I am not so sure. | :05:51. | :05:56.
The rules say you can stay in if you are laps, but maybe we should | :05:56. | :06:02.
have a moving away so we are not taking the back that. It is Gomez | :06:02. | :06:05.
who has impacted, putting pace in for the first time they have | :06:05. | :06:10.
managed to move away from Sven Riederer and Raphael staying | :06:10. | :06:15.
backwards and redirect. Raphael moving in front of Sven Riederer. I | :06:15. | :06:20.
am not happy seen the way that is developing with Raphael. Gomez has | :06:20. | :06:27.
made his move and is covered by Jonathan Brownlee. There is a real | :06:27. | :06:31.
kick from Javier Gomez as he came round the left hand. We might see | :06:31. | :06:35.
more of that on these various out and backs that they will be | :06:35. | :06:39.
negotiating shortly. We will be looking back further through the | :06:40. | :06:44.
field. These are runners are about to the lap and they need to move | :06:44. | :06:49.
out of the way because the main contenders are coming through. | :06:49. | :06:59.
:06:59. | :07:10. | ||
Jonathan Brownlee and Gomez are Brownlee -- leads the Jonathan | :07:10. | :07:20.
:07:20. | :07:27. | ||
Raphael has been laughed and he is just going along for the ride. In | :07:27. | :07:32.
which case, he should probably ease off and keep out of the way. As I | :07:32. | :07:38.
said, I just think it is philosophy, just going against the spirit of | :07:38. | :07:43.
the sport. He is taking advantage from two guys who are a mile and a | :07:43. | :07:49.
half in front of him. Also it is confusing everybody. The crowd will | :07:49. | :07:54.
be thinking he is in third. If we are questioning that, we you have | :07:54. | :08:00.
watched this closely. You can imagine what the spectators will be | :08:00. | :08:07.
thinking. A slip by Jonathan Brownlee. The third place man | :08:07. | :08:13.
coming through will either be Steffen Justus or Sven Riederer. | :08:13. | :08:20.
Gomez leads the way. Jonathan Brownlee is second. Sven Riederer | :08:20. | :08:26.
is third. There will be some changes in the field. There are a | :08:26. | :08:32.
few laps runners coming through transition. They still have a long | :08:32. | :08:41.
way to go. He has this -- Steffen Justus is in 4th position. Ivan | :08:41. | :08:51.
:08:51. | :08:53. | ||
Rana is next through for Spain in 5th. Akos Vanek has been lap as | :08:53. | :09:03.
:09:03. | :09:03. | ||
well. This is were Jonathan slipped. We have seen a bit of that today. | :09:03. | :09:08.
He managed to maintain his footing. Gomez and Brownlee are shoulder to | :09:08. | :09:18.
:09:18. | :09:18. | ||
shoulder. This is the final lap. Thinking about the implication of | :09:18. | :09:25.
the laps runners, to be lapped that early on, you move to the side. | :09:25. | :09:30.
Gomez and Brownlee lead for start Gomez has made the impact, he has | :09:30. | :09:37.
been working at the front. Gomez and Brownlee involved in A4 to | :09:37. | :09:47.

raise. It is for the title. The title is Jonathan's if he finishes | :09:48. | :09:52.
for four second. But he wants to come to the southern hemisphere and | :09:53. | :09:58.
lead with a victory in the Grand Final. Gomez is taking it to the | :09:58. | :10:05.
Yorkshireman. He is responding to everything Gomez throws at him so | :10:05. | :10:15.

series. Began in Sydney, San Diego, Madrid, and then we have the | :10:33. | :10:39.
Olympic race in London. Stockholm and Japan followed. It concludes | :10:39. | :10:44.
now in downtown Auckland, where we have had everything that nature can | :10:44. | :10:50.
throw at us, in terms its of the weather. A squall came through, | :10:50. | :10:55.
giving as high winds and torrential rain during the bike. It has dried | :10:55. | :11:01.
off now for the final stage, the runs. It looks good as Jonathan | :11:01. | :11:06.
Brownlee pits to become the world triathlon series champion for 2012, | :11:06. | :11:12.
to make it an unforgettable year for the Brownlee brothers. To add | :11:12. | :11:17.
to his silver medal. His brother, Alastair, the Olympic -- Olympic | :11:17. | :11:22.
champion. He has moved ahead of Gomez and given himself a couple of | :11:22. | :11:29.
metres lead over the Spaniard. They have got this hairpin bend to | :11:29. | :11:34.
negotiate. Brownlee takes it with short steps to keep himself up | :11:34. | :11:39.
right. Gomez tries to respond. He is not letting Jonathan Brownlee | :11:39. | :11:46.
get too far away. We are in the last three-quarters of a mile. | :11:46. | :11:50.
Gomez is pushing hard, trying to get away for start recovered | :11:50. | :11:54.
strongly by Jonathan Brownlee. Brownlee has gone again will stop | :11:54. | :11:58.
is Gomez going to be able to respond? Will we let it come down | :11:58. | :12:03.
to a sprint finish. I don't think either of the ones that. They were | :12:03. | :12:13.
:12:13. | :12:25. | ||
just push. We are inside the last He closed down Kris Gemmell | :12:25. | :12:31.
alongside Javier Gomez and now, here they are, racing for victory | :12:32. | :12:40.
in Auckland to conclude the season. Well, Gomez must go again. He is | :12:40. | :12:45.
not going to leave this down to a sprint in the last 300 metres so, | :12:45. | :12:50.
surely, he must start building and trying to go before they get into | :12:50. | :12:55.
that last minute or so of running. He has got to give himself every | :12:55. | :13:01.
opportunity. He needs to start moving through and round. Sven | :13:02. | :13:09.
Riederer is clinging on to third but Justus is closing the gap. That | :13:09. | :13:15.
is the battle for third. This is the battle for victory and for the | :13:15. | :13:19.
world triathlon series title for 2012 between Jonathan Brownlee of | :13:19. | :13:25.
Great Britain, and Javier Gomez of Spain. Gomez is not finished yet. | :13:25. | :13:29.
Brownlee has a glance, he can feel the Spaniard breathing down his | :13:29. | :13:38.
neck. He has tried to kick once and Gomez was equal to it. And Gomez | :13:38. | :13:45.
comes alongside. He is within... Just a hair's breadth of the leader. | :13:45. | :13:50.
They I'll literally step for step on the final stages of the final | :13:51. | :13:59.
triathlon of the season. Who has got the final kick to win it? Back | :13:59. | :14:08.
to wars -- towards the waterfront and to the transition area, down at | :14:08. | :14:14.
Queen's Wharf. They are almost touching each other. Brownlee's | :14:14. | :14:22.
right-arm... Left arm and Gomez's right arm are brushing... And Gomez | :14:22. | :14:26.
has kicked, he has saved a bit. Jonathan Brownlee has not let him | :14:26. | :14:32.
get away. Brownlee is still with a chance of winning this final race | :14:32. | :14:36.
but he -- it is going to come down to a dash for the line. Deafening | :14:36. | :14:42.
noise. Jonathan Brownlee has got more to offer. He is alongside | :14:42. | :14:50.
Javier Gomez. Gomez response once again. Gomez kicks. And Gomez will | :14:50. | :14:56.
win it. Brownlee is beaten. He takes the final race of the season, | :14:56. | :15:03.
Gomez. He takes it by two seconds! What an incredible finish to this | :15:03. | :15:10.
series for 2012 Knapp Gomez wins in Auckland. Brownlee comes second and | :15:10. | :15:16.
wins the over all title for 2012. Another stunning triathlon | :15:16. | :15:21.
performance from Javier Gomez, another incredible, unforgettable | :15:21. | :15:27.
finish at the very highest level. And Sven Riederer has done enough. | :15:27. | :15:36.
He slaloms up the finish to take third position. He held off the | :15:36. | :15:43.
intention of Steffen Justus behind and he is home for third. Sven | :15:43. | :15:51.
Riederer on the podium in Auckland. Confirmation of the final results. | :15:51. | :15:56.
A win for Javier Gomez Eckert of Jonathan Brownlee. Third today for | :15:56. | :16:02.
Sven Riederer. And the second best triathletes was David McNamee who | :16:02. | :16:07.
finished 10th. I'm with two proud parents. What is the secret? What | :16:07. | :16:13.
you have to do to be the best with the boys? He you have to be | :16:13. | :16:18.
motivated and have an incredible desire to win. Yes and Yorkshire | :16:18. | :16:25.
puddings. And you brought some Yorkshire weather with you. Yes. He | :16:25. | :16:30.
is used to racing in the wind and rain. It is much cooler in that -- | :16:30. | :16:37.
in Yorkshire than this. We have got his grandmother up there, too. She | :16:37. | :16:43.
has been smiling all the time. How pleased is she to be here? She is | :16:43. | :16:46.
poised to seek to a new be the world champion and she went to the | :16:46. | :16:50.
Olympics and she saw Alastair as well and she is very pleased to see | :16:50. | :17:00.
:17:00. | :17:06. | ||
another breathtaking conclusion. On this occasion, Jonathan Brownlee | :17:06. | :17:16.
:17:16. | :17:21. | ||
Javier Gomez! Javier Gomez showed that he is | :17:21. | :17:29.
among the best in the world. His timing was immaculate. He saved | :17:29. | :17:38.
Congratulations and what an incredible array is. Years, | :17:38. | :17:44.
definitely. It had everything. Cold water, tough course, rain, tough | :17:44. | :17:48.
conditions, but I managed to put together a good performance. Before | :17:48. | :17:53.
the race, you said the only thing you can do is win, and that is what | :17:53. | :17:58.
you did. And congratulations for the silver medal position over all. | :17:58. | :18:04.
I am really happy about that. It was difficult to keep Jonathan out | :18:04. | :18:10.
of the podium. He is the well deserved world champion. He has | :18:11. | :18:15.
been very consistent from April until October. I'm happy with my | :18:15. | :18:21.
second place. It is great to be world champion. It is harder in the | :18:21. | :18:27.
World Series because there is a lot of pressure. It is a tough race. It | :18:27. | :18:30.
is a pure triathlon and it has been a great season. If somebody had | :18:30. | :18:35.
told me at the start of the year that I would have a bronze medal | :18:35. | :18:39.
and be the world champion, I would have taken that. Javier Gomez was | :18:39. | :18:43.
so determined, he led the charge on the bike, and then you were | :18:43. | :18:50.
together on the whole run. He is a pure a triathlon runner. I did have | :18:50. | :18:54.
a great swim. We worked very hard on the bike. The trees was harder | :18:54. | :19:03.
than I thought. -- the case. The first two lapse was steady but then | :19:03. | :19:10.
it was a hard right. Javier Gomez really kicked. It came to the | :19:10. | :19:15.
finish, and then he came around me. I did the job, I needed to come | :19:16. | :19:20.
third, and I came second. family must be so pleased to keep | :19:20. | :19:25.
the world Championship title in the household. How does this compared | :19:25. | :19:29.
to your bronze Olympic medal? not as special as the bronze | :19:29. | :19:35.
Olympic medal. It was a great day at the Olympics. It was super. This | :19:35. | :19:44.
is not as good but still pretty special. We can't ask for anything | :19:44. | :19:54.
:19:54. | :19:59. | ||
Jonathan Brownlee is the champion of the world. His older brother, | :19:59. | :20:06.
Alistair Brownlee, is the former champion. What a 2012 it has been | :20:06. | :20:16.
