always been a trail blazing city. 100 years on from the Industrial | :00:18. | :00:21.
Revolution it is all about the music. Now, Manchester's leading the | :00:21. | :00:26.
way in a sporting revolution. The 2002 Commonwealth Games signalled a | :00:27. | :00:31.
new era. Without them, it was said the London Olympic and Paralympic | :00:31. | :00:36.
Games would never have happened. Since then, pretty much every major | :00:36. | :00:42.
sporting event has been held here. Manchester is home to the multi-gold | :00:42. | :00:47.
medal winning British cycling team. Today, it's running that's in the | :00:47. | :00:51.
spotlight as 40,000 people of all abilities take to the streets. The | :00:51. | :01:01.
:01:01. | :01:07. | ||
city of industry, music and now Good morning to you and welcome to | :01:07. | :01:09.
the Great Manchester Run. It is another beautiful morning here in | :01:09. | :01:13.
the north-west. It is a mixed blessing. If you're one of the | :01:13. | :01:17.
40,000 or so people on Oxford Street you're probably wishing it was a | :01:18. | :01:22.
little cooler but if you're a supporter, you think it is about | :01:22. | :01:26.
perfect. Over a quarter of a million people have taken part in this race | :01:26. | :01:35.
since it first started in 2003. It is the largest UK 10K race. You've | :01:35. | :01:40.
Olympic champions, world champions, top level world runners, stars of | :01:40. | :01:46.
the small screen. People dressed in crazy outfits and heart warming and | :01:46. | :01:53.
inspirational stories. Steve Cram, palm Dickenson and Denise Lewis and | :01:53. | :01:59.
Paul Jones are out and about. I am ear here with David Ryan. Who are | :01:59. | :02:04.
you running for and how much money are you trying to raise? Northern | :02:04. | :02:11.
air hospital radioam I'm looking to raise about 1,000. David's story is | :02:11. | :02:17.
one of thousands. Everyone running here has a special reason for doing | :02:17. | :02:24.
so as I'll find out a little later. Good luck everyone. A among the | :02:24. | :02:30.
thousands of runners are some famous faces from Emmerdale to Coronation | :02:30. | :02:35.
Street, 5 live to life on Mars. I'll speak to some later up here on the | :02:35. | :02:38.
speak to some later up here on the VIP bus. | :02:38. | :02:42.
Lots more coming from Phil and Denise through the next couple of | :02:42. | :02:47.
hours. I'll speak to Paula Radcliffe shortly. First, here's what's coming | :02:47. | :02:57.
:02:57. | :02:57. | ||
up this morning. Always high quality elite races. We've Haile | :02:57. | :03:04.
Gebrselassie Hyland Tish annish dib abab. We've a special guest, former | :03:04. | :03:08.
Bolton Wanderers Fabrice Muamba a year on from that shocking cardiac | :03:08. | :03:14.
arrest he suffered whilst playing Spurs. There are more inspirational | :03:14. | :03:18.
stories like Kirsty Howard who's raised millions for charity in the | :03:18. | :03:23.
process of her run. We'll follow the progress of the tens of thousands of | :03:23. | :03:28.
compet Triaz whether they are striving for a personal best or just | :03:28. | :03:32.
looking to have a fun day out. There was quite a bit of sporting | :03:32. | :03:37.
excitement on Deansgate yet as well. We'll look back on the best of the | :03:37. | :03:45.
action from the great City Games. However fast or slow you are, the | :03:45. | :03:49.
finishing line is always a welcome sight. We're head thering now to | :03:49. | :03:53.
speak to Paula Radcliffe. 11 years ago now since you won gold in the | :03:53. | :03:57.
Commonwealth Games. You must have happy memories? Very happy memories. | :03:57. | :04:02.
It doesn't feel like 11 years ago. We were both on that night. Just so | :04:02. | :04:08.
many special memories of the at MOT fear -- atmosphere in that stadium. | :04:08. | :04:13.
The way the crowd God behind me. I wasn't fortunate enough to take part | :04:14. | :04:20.
last year. Manchester is a very special place. Seb Coe said it, | :04:20. | :04:26.
without the success of Manchester, we never would have had London? | :04:26. | :04:30.
Manchester showed we could do it in this country. What a great show and | :04:30. | :04:34.
how supportive the British public was of sporting events. What a great | :04:34. | :04:39.
show it could be and really gave us the boost we could do it in London | :04:39. | :04:43.
and we proved we could very well. Let's come on today and into the | :04:43. | :04:53.
:04:53. | :04:55. | ||
elite races. Until We say his best days are behind him, but he is still | :04:55. | :05:01.
breaking records all the time. He just keeps getting faster and | :05:01. | :05:07.
stronger. He slowed down a little bit, but he is coming back faster | :05:07. | :05:12.
and faster. He also needs to watch the others in the race. It is going | :05:13. | :05:20.
to be a tough race. Let's talk about the women's race, Tirunesh Dibaba, | :05:20. | :05:26.
she is talking about stepping up for the marathon. She has already shown | :05:26. | :05:31.
she can run very well on the roads, she has run a very fast 15 | :05:31. | :05:35.
kilometres on the ropes, she is keen to come here today and she looks | :05:35. | :05:40.
really, really strong. She wanted to run London and was not able to get | :05:40. | :05:46.
there because of that injury that flared up just before. She is fired | :05:46. | :05:51.
up for a good track season and also wants to learn more about running on | :05:51. | :05:57.
the roads. It is nice to see Helen back out here running, she won two | :05:57. | :06:01.
macro years ago, it would be great to see her use it as a springboard | :06:01. | :06:07.
for a very strong summer. It would be good to see her come out and run | :06:07. | :06:15.
well. And of course Gemma Steel behind her. Thanks for the moment, | :06:15. | :06:21.
let's take a look at what starts when the women's race starts | :06:21. | :06:30.
shortly. In about half an hour it is the men's elite. Well, the first | :06:30. | :06:34.
event of the day is the wheelchair race which started just before we | :06:34. | :06:38.
came on air. An all British line-up and a favourite looks to be Simon | :06:38. | :06:47.
Lawson, the defending champion here in Manchester. Jane Egan in the | :06:47. | :06:51.
women's race looks to defend her title. It promises to be highly | :06:51. | :06:57.
competitive. I will be catching up with the winner at the end. Sub | :06:57. | :07:05.
recent Rumbold was here. He miraculously survived a cardiac | :07:05. | :07:10.
arrest after his heart stopped beating. We will hear from him but | :07:10. | :07:13.
for now Denise Lewis is on the front line with runners raising money for | :07:13. | :07:21.
his charity. I am here with Phil Mason and some of the runners from | :07:21. | :07:28.
the hearts and goals charity. Still, I know it is your first time | :07:28. | :07:33.
running here, tell us a little bit about the charity and what its aims | :07:33. | :07:37.
are. It is a partnership between Bolton Wanderers and North West | :07:37. | :07:43.
ambulance. We are trying to put defibrillators into public places | :07:43. | :07:49.
and to make people aware of this silent killer, 100,000 people die | :07:49. | :07:53.
every year from sudden cardiac arrest. I was not aware of that | :07:53. | :08:01.
until what happened. It is a major killer in this country. It is such | :08:01. | :08:05.
an important part of what you are trying to raise here, bringing | :08:05. | :08:12.
attention to what is a silent killer. Absolutely. When someone | :08:12. | :08:22.
collapses it is a terrible thing. The good news is, he is alive, well | :08:22. | :08:28.
and here today. We want to make sure other people have instant access to | :08:28. | :08:34.
defibrillators. I wish you and the rest of the runners all the best. I | :08:34. | :08:39.
hope you raise lots of money today. The elite runners are just behind | :08:39. | :08:49.
:08:49. | :08:56. | ||
me, Tirunesh Dibaba is just to my Ethiopian superstar Tirunesh | :08:56. | :09:00.
Dibaba. Five-time world Cross country champion and three-time | :09:01. | :09:05.
Olympic champion. She won the double at the Beijing Olympics, then we | :09:05. | :09:14.
claimed her 10,000 crowd in London last year. Her closest challengers | :09:14. | :09:18.
include two British athletes. Helen Clitheroe won the great Manchester | :09:18. | :09:21.
run two macro years ago and has represented Great Britain at two | :09:21. | :09:27.
Olympic Games. Gemma Steel was seventh in last year's half Marathon | :09:27. | :09:33.
Championships. She has also won the European Cross country bronze in | :09:33. | :09:43.
:09:43. | :09:44. | ||
2011. Another athlete to watch out for is from Latvia. She has twice | :09:44. | :09:54.
:09:54. | :10:10. | ||
now. A great atmosphere down here, thousands watching at the top of | :10:10. | :10:18.
Oxford Street. It is good morning to our commentary team. Hello to Paul | :10:18. | :10:25.
Dickenson and Steve Cram. Good morning, everybody. The sun is | :10:25. | :10:32.
shining down on all of the athletes. Helen Clitheroe, good to see her | :10:32. | :10:40.
here. Gemma Steel looking for a good race, Susan Partridge will be | :10:40. | :10:45.
representing Great Britain at the world Championships, Emma Pallant, a | :10:45. | :10:49.
very talented youngster who has moved to the triathlon but is | :10:49. | :10:59.
:10:59. | :11:00. | ||
looking for a good performance. Perfect conditions best day of the | :11:00. | :11:10.
:11:10. | :11:14. | ||
year. Fabrice We'll be getting them under way shortly. I think all of us | :11:14. | :11:20.
really excited to see how Tirunesh Dibaba is going to perform. I heard | :11:20. | :11:30.
:11:30. | :11:37. | ||
Paul talk about her earlier on, events these days. Getting | :11:37. | :11:43.
introduced to all of the people. Susan will be going to Moscow. Only | :11:43. | :11:47.
three women selected for the world Championships. She ran just inside | :11:47. | :11:57.
the time in the London Marathon this year. Gemma Steel, a very talented | :11:57. | :12:02.
athlete who has really come on in the last two macro years. She knows | :12:02. | :12:11.
this course well, as indeed does Jelena Prokopcuka. I was like for a | :12:11. | :12:16.
walk along the towpath yesterday and I saw her for -- preparing for this | :12:16. | :12:26.
:12:26. | :12:27. | ||
race today. Helen Clitheroe, she had a disappointing year last year after | :12:27. | :12:30.
a brilliant 2011. She had intended to move up to the marathon in | :12:30. | :12:39.
London, but after a bit of glue it curtailed her preparations. Her | :12:39. | :12:45.
marathon debut was postponed until later in the year, as indeed was the | :12:45. | :12:48.
debut of Tirunesh Dibaba. Perhaps the greatest distance runner on the | :12:48. | :12:58.
track. Tirunesh Dibaba heads up this women's elite field. The course | :12:58. | :13:08.
:13:08. | :13:09. | ||
record, incidentally, also set by an Ethiopian. Fabrice Muamba Gets them | :13:09. | :13:13.
under way. No pacemakers today, it will be all down to their own | :13:13. | :13:22.
efforts. An opportunity for some quick times. A slight breeze, but | :13:22. | :13:29.
almost perfect conditions. You hear some non-elite athletes talking | :13:29. | :13:39.
:13:39. | :13:54. | ||
about how hot it is. It is not that for whatever reason. The first six, | :13:54. | :13:58.
700 metres, they just wind their way down behind where we are sitting in | :13:58. | :14:08.
Deansgate. They basically had out towards Old Trafford and down to | :14:08. | :14:14.
Salford quays, which is now the home of BBC sport. That tall building | :14:14. | :14:20.
there, we are right in front of there. We are sitting right in front | :14:20. | :14:27.
of the finish line. They take a left turn, you can probably see Old | :14:27. | :14:31.
Trafford, there it is. Of course, it has been in the headlines for all | :14:31. | :14:37.
sorts of reasons. Sir Alex Ferguson has finally drawn the curtain on a | :14:37. | :14:47.
:14:47. | :14:51. | ||
fantastic career. A fast course, really out and back. A course which | :14:51. | :14:53.
certainly has the potential for a few of these athletes to go very | :14:54. | :15:01.
quickly. Tirunesh Dibaba has tucked herself in nicely. Let's give Paula | :15:01. | :15:11.
:15:11. | :15:12. | ||
another go. Testing, one, two macro, three. I was saying, a beautiful day | :15:12. | :15:21.
for running a marathon. It is. For these athletes out here now, perfect | :15:21. | :15:28.
conditions. Not too warm, but a beautiful, sunny day to show off | :15:28. | :15:33.
Manchester. At the moment it does not look like Tirunesh Dibaba is | :15:33. | :15:39.
keen on pushing the pace too fast. Somebody called Paula Radcliffe has | :15:39. | :15:48.
the best time ever recorded for ten K on the roads. I think anything low | :15:48. | :15:54.
31 minutes, she would be happy with. I am curious as to where she is at | :15:54. | :15:59.
right now. We know she had some problems with the mileage, we have | :15:59. | :16:06.
always suspected it might be an issue for her. Of course, now she | :16:06. | :16:10.
has a big track season ahead of her, she is may be caught between the two | :16:10. | :16:20.
:16:20. | :16:21. | ||
macro a little bit. Helen Clitheroe may be the same. She is going to run | :16:21. | :16:27.
another race in New York. Let's here from Helen herself. It feels great | :16:27. | :16:34.
this year, for me it is really about getting back into racing. Last year | :16:34. | :16:41.
I was pulling out of races. I had to have quite a long period of time. It | :16:41. | :16:46.
is about getting back into racing and getting that feeling again. I | :16:46. | :16:50.
have no expectations about what I am going to do in this race, I just | :16:50. | :17:00.
:17:00. | :17:09. | ||
want to enjoy the experience and get back into racing mode again. It is | :17:09. | :17:14.
difficult, Paula, when you've been such a good track athlete to make | :17:14. | :17:19.
that mental transition, to think of yourself as a marathon runner, road | :17:19. | :17:26.
racer. Oh, hang on, a bit of a trip there. Nasty fall, there. It is not | :17:26. | :17:32.
Susan Partridge. She's still in the pack. Bib bib just took an advantage | :17:32. | :17:36.
to get a bit of a lead and a jump on the field. It was pretty slow | :17:36. | :17:44.
through the first kilometre. There was a tangle of feet and somebody | :17:44. | :17:51.
went down. I think as soon as Tirunesh Dibaba moved to the front | :17:51. | :17:56.
there was a change of positions. Let me have another look to see if I can | :17:56. | :18:01.
work out who caused it. Let's go back to the wheelchair. | :18:01. | :18:06.
wheelchairs have been going for a little over 20 minutes. Leveredles, | :18:06. | :18:10.
Simon Lawson it is who comes into the home straight first well ahead | :18:10. | :18:16.
of anybody. He has over a minute's lead. Victory number two in the | :18:16. | :18:22.
Great Manchester Run for 30-year-old Simon Lawson, who's the defending | :18:22. | :18:32.
:18:32. | :18:32. | ||
champion. Started off tentatively as Stuart Bloor and Hogg took it on. | :18:32. | :18:42.
But he's pulled away from everything. A fine victory. | :18:42. | :18:47.
I think it was Christelle Daunay whopping went down. She was caught | :18:47. | :18:54.
from behind. Straight up. You mentioned the pace wasn't that | :18:54. | :19:00.
quick. Hopefully not too much damage done. Seems OK. A slow first | :19:01. | :19:06.
kilometre. Tirunesh Dibaba decided enough was enough. She already has | :19:06. | :19:13.
an eight or nine metre lead. A little surge. She looks like she | :19:13. | :19:18.
means business. She looks like she's pushing on and making a hard, honest | :19:18. | :19:24.
race for it. Heroin Terre preparations would have been a | :19:24. | :19:34.
little perturbed. She's a little fragile in her lower legs. She's | :19:34. | :19:44.
:19:44. | :19:45. | ||
concentrating back on the track. Second place finisher in the | :19:45. | :19:49.
wheelchair race, Phil hog. Simon Lawson, who eventually won this | :19:49. | :19:57.
event pulled away. That's a victory for Lawson by well over a minute. | :19:58. | :20:03.
Meanwhile, still heading away from the finish line Tirunesh Dibaba, | :20:03. | :20:08.
second kilometre about five seconds quicker. All down to her. Gemma | :20:08. | :20:12.
Steel leading the chasing group. Jelena Prokopcuk Clitheroe and | :20:13. | :20:17.
Pallant all in there. Looks like already they will be settling for a | :20:17. | :20:27.
battle for second place. So, 3: 15, 3: 09, six sect of seconds quicker. | :20:27. | :20:33.
She put a lot of work in preparing for London. As you were saying, | :20:33. | :20:40.
Paula, I think the suspicion is she may not, as talented as she is, the | :20:40. | :20:45.
work required might be something her body's not just up to. Nothing wrong | :20:45. | :20:50.
with her attitude. As you said, she's a little fragile or has been | :20:50. | :20:56.
in the past. That's the thing about the marathon. You need to have the | :20:56. | :21:03.
talent to run the distance but your body needs to about able to | :21:03. | :21:08.
withstand the training. Tirunesh Dibaba has had trouble when she's | :21:08. | :21:13.
tried to pick up the mileage and run on the road. Helen's slightly | :21:13. | :21:17.
different. Helen's heart will always lie on the track in the shorter | :21:17. | :21:21.
distances. She does have amazing range stretching from 1500 metres, | :21:22. | :21:27.
she won the European Cup in Gateshead in 2000. Going all the way | :21:27. | :21:32.
up to hopefully the marathon but definitely the half marathon. I | :21:32. | :21:37.
think she ran a half in New Orleans and it didn't go as well as she | :21:37. | :21:41.
would have hoped. She felt like the preparation wasn't there to go into | :21:41. | :21:45.
London and she still wanted to run well and run well on the track this | :21:45. | :21:50.
year. Of course, all of that discussions centres around Mo Farah | :21:50. | :21:57.
to some extent. You can see the same thing. Not everybody has made the | :21:57. | :22:00.
accepted transition up the distances. It is not as easy as | :22:00. | :22:05.
everybody thinks it is. It is not just about ability. They have great | :22:05. | :22:10.
ability. It is whether your body can stand up to the rigours of marathon | :22:10. | :22:15.
training week in, week out, month in, month out. Tirunesh Dibaba doing | :22:15. | :22:20.
what she does best over 10,000 metres. She's pulling away easily. | :22:20. | :22:25.
The others had a little go to stay with her. Decided it wasn't the best | :22:25. | :22:32.
tech particular. If you want to come second in this race you accept | :22:32. | :22:40.
Tirunesh Dibaba's already the winner. That was 3K. It might have | :22:41. | :22:46.
been quicker. Around about the three minute kilometre split. She's | :22:47. | :22:52.
picking it up. She looks like she's running very easily and smoothly. It | :22:52. | :22:57.
is very decentive. She's covering the ground pretty fast. The girls | :22:57. | :23:02.
behind have decided they are in a different race and she's in her own | :23:02. | :23:12.
:23:12. | :23:16. | ||
personal time trial to see what she can do out there today. Yes, 3.3. | :23:16. | :23:24.
She'd have to average 3.6 or 3.7. Big lead early on for Tirunesh | :23:25. | :23:33.
Dibaba. I'm here on the VIP bus with Tina | :23:33. | :23:39.
O'Brien, star of Coronation Street, Waterloo Road and Strictly Come | :23:39. | :23:45.
Dancing. You're teaching as well as acting? Yes, I'm teaching drama to | :23:45. | :23:49.
children which I love. This is a special occasion. You're a local | :23:49. | :23:54.
girl. Running to raise funds for a local cause? The Manchester | :23:54. | :24:02.
Children's Hospital. We're raising money for raising money to have a | :24:02. | :24:05.
doctor a Clown Doctor in the hospital all the time so they can do | :24:05. | :24:09.
things with the children, make balloons, make the children smile. | :24:09. | :24:13.
Especially when they are going through such hard times. What kind | :24:13. | :24:18.
of preparations do you put into today? Try to run a lot but I | :24:18. | :24:23.
haven't run for the past few days so I'm nervous now. I think the | :24:23. | :24:28.
adrenaline and crowd support will Keefe everyone going. You're nervous | :24:28. | :24:32.
but when you start running and see the back of everyone's T-shirts and | :24:32. | :24:37.
who they are running for, it makes you emotional. Proud to be from | :24:37. | :24:43.
here? Very proud and to have such a beautiful day. Enjoy it. Good luck. | :24:43. | :24:48.
Well done an raising money for a great cause. Thank you. I'm really | :24:48. | :24:52.
excited. Great sights back at the start. They | :24:52. | :24:58.
are all gathering waiting for their turn to get on to the streets here. | :24:58. | :25:03.
But Tirunesh Dibaba has a clear road ahead of her and behind her. This is | :25:03. | :25:09.
the chasing group. Gemma Steel, Jelena Prokopcuk on the far side. | :25:09. | :25:17.
Helen Clitheroe closest to the camera. Katie Brough in the pack | :25:17. | :25:23.
there. It is interesting, isn't it, athletes come in and want to run | :25:23. | :25:27.
against the great athletes. Of course, what happens is as soon as | :25:27. | :25:34.
she goes they are pretty much in their own race. As she is running | :25:34. | :25:39.
past, I'm not sure how much of a football fan she is. Certainly | :25:39. | :25:43.
plenty of the other Ethiopian and Kenyan runners follow the | :25:43. | :25:47.
Premiership football a lot. Are big fans. A lot say, who's your | :25:47. | :25:52.
favourite team and they go "Manchester united." ! Doesn't | :25:52. | :25:59.
matter where you go in the world. Maybe Tirunesh Dibaba looking | :25:59. | :26:05.
forward to running past Old Trafford. More likely she's looking | :26:05. | :26:13.
for the 5km split. She seems pretty focussed out there. Making sure | :26:13. | :26:19.
she's running the pace she wants to. We saw a slight incline and now | :26:19. | :26:23.
there's a slight downhill. That's as much up and down as it gets. It is a | :26:23. | :26:31.
pretty fast course. She's able to get her rhythm going. She's | :26:31. | :26:41.
:26:41. | :26:41. | ||
definitely through the 5k and pushing on to close in negative | :26:41. | :26:46.
splits finishing comfortably inside that course record. Ahead of that | :26:46. | :26:50.
pack, just watching further down the road, Katie Brough is dropping off | :26:50. | :26:56.
that pack. A little surge from Jelena Prokopcuk. There she is. | :26:56. | :27:04.
Jelena Prokopcuk and Gemma Steel, then Helen clothe rear. Katie Brough | :27:04. | :27:10.
is falling off a little bit. There are no real hills here. A slight | :27:10. | :27:18.
climb up to old faff Ford and then slightly downhill coming into | :27:18. | :27:23.
Salford Quays. Really perfect conditions. Slight breeze out there | :27:23. | :27:27.
but really nothing to speak of. Gemma, she's threatened to burst | :27:27. | :27:32.
through. She's on the world cross-country team. Somebody who I'm | :27:32. | :27:37.
sure has a lot of abilities. She's really come on a lot in the last few | :27:37. | :27:43.
years. She's a very good athlete. She's very strong. Deceptively quick | :27:43. | :27:48.
as well. I saw her up in the training camp last year training | :27:48. | :27:52.
really well at the beginning of the year. She came down to this race, I | :27:52. | :27:58.
think, and raced disappointingly. She was struggling to get over some | :27:59. | :28:02.
post-viral fatigue all year. Didn't really get the year she wanted to | :28:02. | :28:07.
last year. She has started to turn that round and is in pretty good | :28:07. | :28:11.
shape. It will be interesting to see what she can do. She probably races | :28:11. | :28:16.
best on the road when she doesn't have to put her head to split times. | :28:16. | :28:26.
Just thinks about running hard and racing, basically. Coached by John | :28:26. | :28:32.
Nuttall. A lot of the British athletes have come back from a stint | :28:32. | :28:40.
abroad for training. Altitude training part of the British team's | :28:40. | :28:45.
endurance programme. Used well over the last few years. Salford Quays | :28:45. | :28:55.
:28:55. | :28:56. | ||
area. A bit quiet on a Sunday morning. I hope there's some people | :28:56. | :29:04.
working at the BBC there anyway! A lot of these city 10Ks are fast | :29:04. | :29:10.
courses but they don't always go through well populated areas for | :29:10. | :29:14.
obvious reasons. Sometimes it is a bit of a lonely trek for the | :29:14. | :29:20.
athletes. Going well. Very well. Going well. Slowed down a | :29:20. | :29:28.
little. She's probably on pace there. She is for about 31.20. She | :29:28. | :29:32.
needs to pick it up a little in the second half if she wants to attack | :29:32. | :29:38.
that course record. She seems to be just happy to cruise along. I'm not | :29:38. | :29:45.
sure she's as focussed as she said she is on that time. She's out for a | :29:45. | :29:48.
nice Sunday morning run. Then go back racing on the track with a bit | :29:48. | :29:58.
:29:58. | :30:03. | ||
of a strength trial-out today. Tirunesh Dibaba will have a pretty | :30:03. | :30:08.
good track season ahead depending on where she decides to race. Her | :30:08. | :30:13.
sister have already won the Diamond league five kilometres. It will be | :30:13. | :30:17.
interesting to see when the arguments start in the family about | :30:17. | :30:26.
who might be representing Ethiopia her little sister is fast improving. | :30:26. | :30:29.
Gemma Steel pushing on with the second group but they are a long way | :30:29. | :30:39.
:30:39. | :30:46. | ||
has become a major event. We are in the 10th anniversary year, and over | :30:46. | :30:52.
the years this city has taken the run into its heart. Today's event | :30:52. | :30:58.
was tinged with sadness because this week Manchester lost one of its own. | :30:58. | :31:02.
Drummer Lee Rigby lost his life in an act of violence which was so | :31:02. | :31:06.
unprecedented it has brought the whole country together to mourn his | :31:06. | :31:11.
loss. He was born in this city and live just down the road. He was | :31:11. | :31:17.
actually supposed to be here this weekend, and now Manchester and all | :31:17. | :31:27.
:31:27. | :31:27. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 68 seconds | :31:27. | :32:35.
watching will stand silent for one remembrance of Drummer Lee Rigby. | :32:35. | :32:40.
But of course so many people have all sorts of stories why they are | :32:40. | :32:44.
competing today, lots of people with personal tragedies raising millions | :32:44. | :32:50.
of pounds for chat -- for charity. We will be telling you more of those | :32:50. | :32:57.
stories later on. Tirunesh Dibaba, serenely progressing back towards | :32:57. | :33:05.
those scenes. Back towards the city centre. As Paula was saying, not as | :33:05. | :33:09.
quickly as we might have thought. Once you have that sort of lead, | :33:09. | :33:16.
perhaps there will be bigger races in the future, so a nice performance | :33:16. | :33:21.
today will give her a lot of confidence. At the moment she has | :33:21. | :33:28.
got a big, big lead. So, we are about ready for the start of the | :33:28. | :33:33.
maths race and of course the elite men's as part of that. A good field | :33:33. | :33:42.
we have got here, headed up by Haile Gebrselassie. He is well loved here. | :33:42. | :33:47.
Wilson Kipsang was favourite in the marathon last year, took the bronze | :33:47. | :33:55.
medal in the end. And Moses Kipsiro from Uganda. Another man who is | :33:55. | :33:58.
thinking of moving up to the marathon, they are all thinking of | :33:58. | :34:07.
doing it. He ran about 23 kilometres in the Warsaw Marathon before | :34:07. | :34:13.
dropping out, getting a little taste of what it is all about. Mo Farah | :34:13. | :34:18.
will be running a ten kilometres in London tomorrow before his first big | :34:18. | :34:25.
track appearance next week. Looking forward to that. Moses Kipsiro from | :34:25. | :34:32.
Uganda, a brilliant commonwealth games contestant. Won the 5000 and | :34:32. | :34:39.
10,000 in Delhi three years ago Wilson Kipsang looks so good. | :34:39. | :34:44.
Certainly was the favourite going into the Olympics, did not run well | :34:44. | :34:50.
on the day, was impetuous early on and paid for it later. He had a | :34:50. | :34:56.
disappointing London Marathon this year. You cannot really use the word | :34:56. | :35:02.
disappointment too much with Haile Gebrselassie, it has been one long | :35:02. | :35:07.
career of success after success. A real beaming smile on his face. He | :35:07. | :35:14.
is about 53 now, I think. It says 39 there. We are not quite sure exactly | :35:14. | :35:22.
what his ages. Anyway, it is great to see him here. Around 40,000 will | :35:22. | :35:32.
:35:32. | :35:39. | ||
take part today in this great right through the morning, cannot | :35:39. | :35:45.
fit them all on the roads at the same time. These privileged few of | :35:45. | :35:49.
the 40,000 get to set everybody off and get a clear run ahead of them. | :35:49. | :35:54.
After that it will be a clear, long procession as people enjoy their | :35:54. | :36:04.
:36:04. | :36:13. | ||
chance to take part in a fantastic the rafters, we had the city gains | :36:13. | :36:20.
yesterday down at Deansgate. It was well supported and the sun has come | :36:20. | :36:26.
out over the weekend. It has been a great weekend for athletics in | :36:26. | :36:31.
Manchester and a great day to be setting out on this ten K. Look at | :36:31. | :36:37.
all those people waiting their turn patiently. They will be released out | :36:37. | :36:44.
on this route. Out to Old Trafford, into Salford, turn around and come | :36:44. | :36:54.
:36:54. | :36:55. | ||
back. And they head back past all of the thousands heading in the other | :36:55. | :37:02.
direction. So, Fabrice Muamba is going to have a sore hand at the end | :37:02. | :37:08.
of this if he keeps doing that. Rates to see him here. As you are | :37:08. | :37:13.
probably aware, representatives from every single football club are | :37:13. | :37:20.
running to raise money. Fabricius has become a real inspirational | :37:20. | :37:27.
figure himself, of course. -- Mark Fabrice Muamba. Tirunesh Dibaba, how | :37:27. | :37:35.
is she doing? She is still running very very smoothly. She is not | :37:35. | :37:41.
focused too much on the time the lead at halfway was already 38 | :37:41. | :37:50.
seconds. She is probably looking ahead to what she has got coming up. | :37:50. | :37:57.
She is not trying to go too far ahead. We are looking at Jelena | :37:57. | :38:07.
:38:07. | :38:18. | ||
predominantly marathon runners. Your lane has run a fast time, she has | :38:18. | :38:26.
come back to run pretty fast in Japan in spring of this year. | :38:26. | :38:29.
Tirunesh Dibaba is comfortable, I do not think she is focused on running | :38:29. | :38:35.
too fast. She is still running at a fairly decent pace and she will | :38:35. | :38:45.
:38:45. | :38:49. | ||
certainly pick that up in the closing 2-macro kilometres. Christel | :38:49. | :38:55.
tornado has recovered well, from that fall, she did not panic. She | :38:55. | :38:59.
was well off that second group and has done a good job of picking them | :38:59. | :39:09.
:39:09. | :39:12. | ||
off. We are neither a minute behind Tirunesh Dibaba. The finish is | :39:12. | :39:17.
slightly uphill, but really only slightly. If she turns on some of | :39:17. | :39:25.
that remind pace that she has she could get close to that 31.7. She is | :39:25. | :39:30.
well capable of running a sub three minute for a final kilometre. | :39:30. | :39:40.
Especially as she turns into Deansgate and sees the crowd. As we | :39:40. | :39:47.
look back we see Gemma Steel and Helen Clitheroe. Now we're going to | :39:47. | :39:53.
slot into the men's race I think. will see to nicht above are going in | :39:53. | :40:03.
:40:03. | :40:12. | ||
side. And Moses Kipsiro leading them out a little bit at the moment. We | :40:12. | :40:17.
keep talking about the great Haile Gebrselassie, but Wilson Kipsang is | :40:17. | :40:22.
a great athlete. He had a really disappointing London Marathon. I | :40:22. | :40:28.
knew he had had a few problems with his preparations, but he is a good | :40:28. | :40:34.
runner, he is a good road racer as well. This will be quite | :40:34. | :40:41.
interesting. Absolutely. Yesterday Haile Gebrselassie was talking about | :40:41. | :40:50.
gunning for the Masters world over 40s. He ran in Switzerland last week | :40:50. | :40:58.
and he ran fast. He is in good shape. But he says if he really goes | :40:58. | :41:01.
for that time he puts himself in danger of being shot down in the | :41:01. | :41:11.
:41:11. | :41:21. | ||
Dibaba going in the opposite direction, leading that women's race | :41:21. | :41:31.
:41:31. | :41:34. | ||
by over a minute. She has not got far to go now. There she is, 800 | :41:34. | :41:40.
metres. If you look at the clock, she is aiming for 31.07. That is a | :41:40. | :41:49.
possibility. That is definitely within her, she has picked it up. | :41:49. | :41:54.
She has obviously had a little bit of an inkling and thought, I can run | :41:54. | :42:00.
three minutes easily. Slightly uphill from the roundabout. She will | :42:00. | :42:04.
come within sight of us very shortly, but I think this is on for | :42:04. | :42:14.
the course record. I think so. You could see she was starting to use -- | :42:14. | :42:19.
lose a little bit of focus, there was no one there to push her along. | :42:19. | :42:25.
But she can see the finish, she can work out times that she should be | :42:25. | :42:31.
running and she is well capable of closing close to 2.20. We might see | :42:31. | :42:37.
under 31 minutes here. Just easing off an enthusiastic supporter there, | :42:37. | :42:43.
but he would not have lasted much longer at the pace she is going. She | :42:43. | :42:46.
will come under the railway bridge and have a couple of hundred metres | :42:46. | :42:56.
:42:56. | :42:58. | ||
to go. Sensing the finish. She is moving very, very quickly indeed. | :42:58. | :43:07.
Her personal best is 31.30, that is slow slow compared to what she can | :43:07. | :43:11.
do on the track. Not many people have similar times on the road and | :43:11. | :43:20.
the tracks. One last look behind, but this is how is easily. | :43:20. | :43:25.
Absolutely, just looking to see if we can see her turning into | :43:25. | :43:29.
Deansgate. She is really focused, you can see the determination on her | :43:29. | :43:37.
face. She is looking up to see if she can see the clock. She is | :43:37. | :43:41.
focused on getting that course record and will give everything in | :43:41. | :43:47.
the closing stages. Just 100 metres to go for Tirunesh Dibaba, the | :43:47. | :43:51.
Olympic champion stretching out again. Fastest in the world this | :43:51. | :43:56.
year, and a new course record, winning in style, what a super | :43:56. | :44:04.
finish. Very, very strong over the last couple of kilometres. Showing | :44:04. | :44:11.
her class, showing her ability and showing why she is the world's best. | :44:11. | :44:18.
No wonder you were looking at that. Very, very good indeed. We will get | :44:18. | :44:23.
an official time, but it could be about eight I think. That is pretty | :44:23. | :44:33.
:44:33. | :44:37. | ||
impressive because it was the .15 in the first kilometre. I think she | :44:37. | :44:44.
will be in and around what she wants. She has run not much over 15 | :44:44. | :44:48.
minutes for the last five kilometres and the qualification for the 5000 | :44:48. | :44:55.
metres for the World Championship this year is about 15.15. Here is | :44:55. | :45:01.
our second placed athlete Jelena Prokopcuka. She has bounced back | :45:01. | :45:06.
from that spring marathon to come back in good shape. She is probably | :45:06. | :45:10.
not looking too much at a track season this year, she will be | :45:10. | :45:17.
looking more towards a marathon. I think she has run here in Manchester | :45:17. | :45:22.
2-macro or three times at least. But she has run strongly today. | :45:22. | :45:28.
takes second place, and Christelle Daunay will be coming in in second | :45:28. | :45:37.
place. She did not panic, a nice performance. A good performance from | :45:37. | :45:46.
her very close to her personal best. Official times will be there later. | :45:46. | :45:50.
Gemma Steel looked for a long time like she was going to do really | :45:50. | :45:59.
well. She will be the first British athlete, will she get forth? Under a | :45:59. | :46:09.
:46:09. | :46:10. | ||
bit of pressure, just about have enough in the end. Helen Clitheroe, | :46:10. | :46:16.
not quite what she would have expected after a good stint of | :46:16. | :46:19.
training at altitude, well outside 33 minutes. I do not think she will | :46:19. | :46:26.
be too happy with that. She was pacing in Shanghai last week, so | :46:26. | :46:31.
maybe that is still in her legs a little bit. Hopefully it will not | :46:31. | :46:37.
affect the rest of her season. women's race completed, the men is | :46:37. | :46:41.
just getting warmed up. Haile Gebrselassie has decided he just | :46:41. | :46:48.
wants to push it on a little bit. What a familiar sight that is as | :46:48. | :46:54.
they stormed past Old Trafford. Closed for the summer, certainly as | :46:54. | :47:04.
:47:04. | :47:08. | ||
far as football is concerned. Most of them are off on their holidays. | :47:08. | :47:13.
You can see Haile looking around at the other guys saying we need to | :47:13. | :47:23.
:47:23. | :47:36. | ||
pick this up a little bit and make sure the pace stays honest. Kipsiro, | :47:36. | :47:46.
:47:46. | :47:48. | ||
Kipsang then Stephen Mokoka. Let's hear from Haile Gebrselassie highly. | :47:48. | :47:54.
When you come to Manchester, always you feel like you're here to do | :47:54. | :48:01.
sport. Manchester is a sports city. Big clubs in the world here in | :48:01. | :48:11.
:48:11. | :48:12. | ||
Manchester. If you look at the city itself, people are running. Here in | :48:12. | :48:17.
the BUPA Manchester run, people are running the whole day. Last year, | :48:17. | :48:21.
after I finished all my race and everything, still people starting. | :48:22. | :48:31.
:48:32. | :48:36. | ||
Amazing. Ready as ever. The only split we can give you for sure three | :48:36. | :48:45.
3K. That was 8: 28. Which isn't that fast but it is solid enough. Highly | :48:45. | :48:51.
will -- hily will want to make sure he wins this. He has won in the past | :48:51. | :49:01.
:49:01. | :49:03. | ||
but the course record stands from 2007. Mo did training with Kogo for | :49:03. | :49:13.
:49:13. | :49:17. | ||
a while? I think he did.Haile leading them through in a good pace. | :49:17. | :49:27.
:49:27. | :49:29. | ||
Jonny Mellor dropped off that lead group. It is fantastic Lebed is | :49:29. | :49:33.
still producing good performances. I can't call people old. They are way | :49:33. | :49:40.
younger than me. It is getting the big thing. People carrying on. | :49:40. | :49:47.
Haile, no reason he shouldn't if he can perform at this level. 14: 08 | :49:47. | :49:55.
through 5K. He's comfortably on pace to beat that world over-40 pace. It | :49:55. | :50:02.
is held by Katerini from Portugal. He will be thinking about winning | :50:02. | :50:07.
the race. Barring any disasters he knows he can beat that today. He | :50:08. | :50:13.
needs to keep focus. I think we'll see negative splits. I think we'll | :50:13. | :50:19.
see these guys really race now they are past halfway with a fast couple | :50:19. | :50:29.
:50:29. | :50:30. | ||
of closing kilometres. That group still tightly packed but Lebid | :50:30. | :50:36.
struggling a bit. Will be interesting to see if Kipsang can | :50:36. | :50:41.
challenge hi hi. He is a great athlete. Let's get his thoughts. See | :50:41. | :50:48.
what he was expecting today. Very happy to be invited to this race. It | :50:48. | :50:57.
is my fast time. To compete in Manchester. I think my training has | :50:57. | :51:04.
been going very well. Now I can see the weather is good, with the strong | :51:04. | :51:10.
guys and I hope tomorrow we are going to have a good race and my | :51:10. | :51:20.
:51:20. | :51:21. | ||
expectation is to run a good time. You know I was in Kenya with the | :51:21. | :51:27.
British endurance squad back in January. I watched a track session | :51:27. | :51:33.
which Wilson Kipsang was in. He had to be pointed out to me. They did | :51:33. | :51:37.
about 15,000 metre reps. He wasn't in the front of the group. I | :51:37. | :51:41.
remember thinking goodness me, at that point Wilson Kipsang is one of | :51:41. | :51:47.
the fast fastest marathon runners ever, it shows you the talent and | :51:47. | :51:51.
ability that was there. It was a tough workout in January. He was | :51:51. | :51:56.
working really hard on that day. shows you the depth and strength | :51:56. | :52:01.
they have in Kenya. Wilson Kipsang's strength lies on the road. He will | :52:01. | :52:05.
have come away from London disappointed. He didn't really get | :52:05. | :52:10.
involved in the almost suicidal early pace and ran his own pace but | :52:10. | :52:13.
still didn't come through as strongly as he would have hoped. He | :52:13. | :52:19.
looks like he's engaging a lot more today, out for a fast race and | :52:20. | :52:25.
committing fully to this run. Kipsiro looks like he's starting to | :52:25. | :52:33.
struggle a bit or watch a bit more how hie's running the race. Le Birks | :52:33. | :52:38.
id has lost touch with the group but is still running strongly in fifth. | :52:39. | :52:44.
I heard leading into London he had problems in training and he had | :52:44. | :52:49.
missed a bit of work, Kipsang. You wouldn't commit if you were doubtful | :52:49. | :52:54.
about your preparation. That was such a blistering early pace. Yes, | :52:54. | :53:02.
he still ran 2: 07. But by the high standards being set it was a | :53:02. | :53:06.
disappointing performance. He had his big chance in London. He was in | :53:06. | :53:13.
good shape. I think he messed that up. Way to impet ewous early on. I | :53:13. | :53:18.
know he said he didn't really like the course but I think it was his | :53:18. | :53:22.
tactics on the day which lost him the gold medal. I didn't judge the | :53:22. | :53:27.
race right. He didn't show the same skills and the same talent he had | :53:27. | :53:31.
when he'd run in Frankfurt, when he'd run very close to the world | :53:31. | :53:34.
record there. He came away a little disappointed from that. Maybe went | :53:34. | :53:38.
into the training for the London Marathon this year a little more | :53:38. | :53:43.
fired up and hit a few bumps, a few little niggles which meant he didn't | :53:43. | :53:48.
have that confidence starting in London. When they started so fast, | :53:48. | :53:53.
he was just afraid to go with it knowing he didn't have the | :53:53. | :53:57.
background in there. Lots of people will not be running as fast as thee | :53:57. | :54:02.
guys but certainly running a good race. Someone I'm waiting to see run | :54:02. | :54:08.
her first 10K race is Denise Lewis. One day? Well, it is not long to go | :54:08. | :54:12.
before the masses start their race. I've been joined by Nathan. Who are | :54:12. | :54:22.
:54:22. | :54:22. | ||
running for today and why? A charity called Bubetty Pride. It is a school | :54:22. | :54:28.
in Tanzania. We hope to raise money for volunteering in the school and | :54:28. | :54:33.
so our students can have a trip out there and do some volunteering out. | :54:33. | :54:38.
There Looking very smart. How are you feeling? Very nofshous but | :54:38. | :54:48.
:54:48. | :54:48. | ||
excited. Looking forward to it. of you luck, wish you well. | :54:49. | :54:55.
MrMuamba has been joined by MrRutherford. Greg says he still | :54:55. | :55:01.
hasn't really calmed down yet. He's heading off to America next week for | :55:01. | :55:08.
a big long jump competition. He's enjoying being introduced as the | :55:08. | :55:14.
Olympic champion. He'll be that for the rest of his life. Greg will be | :55:14. | :55:20.
ajoying the sights. -- enjoying the sights. For a 10K you can't have | :55:20. | :55:25.
40,000 people out there at the same time. They are set off in different | :55:25. | :55:35.
:55:35. | :55:44. | ||
ways. All wearing white numbers this group here. All very well organised. | :55:44. | :55:49.
So, around 25 minutes after the elites and first group got underway, | :55:49. | :55:59.
:55:59. | :56:11. | ||
the second wave about to go. Watches at the ready. SIREN BLARES | :56:11. | :56:17.
Brilliant. Back at the front. Haile still pushing on. Looks like we've | :56:17. | :56:24.
lost the South African, Stephen Mokoka. We've Kipsang and Kipsiro | :56:24. | :56:30.
still there. Kipsang looking like he's struggling a little. A pace put | :56:30. | :56:39.
on. There's a rise as they come towards old -- Old Trafford. Kipsang | :56:39. | :56:44.
looks like he's having to work to stay with these two. You saw the | :56:44. | :56:50.
expression on his face change from the very smooth, in control, relaxed | :56:50. | :56:55.
face earlier to a little frown. He's maybe just slotting in behind to get | :56:55. | :57:01.
a sheltered ride. There owes not too much wind out there today. Where | :57:01. | :57:11.
:57:11. | :57:13. | ||
Kipsiro was looking like he was struggling, now for me, it's Kipsang | :57:13. | :57:19.
Lebid in fifth place on his own. Suehiro Ishikawa, the Japanese | :57:19. | :57:25.
athlete still leading the rest. He's a long way behind Lebid. He's | :57:26. | :57:34.
working hard. He definitely look likes it. He always looks like he's | :57:34. | :57:40.
really strained. He doesn't look comfortable at all. He's fooled me | :57:40. | :57:45.
at times thinking he won't come through and he does. So, just about | :57:45. | :57:51.
a couple of kilometres to go for these guys. Just over. And Kipsang | :57:51. | :57:58.
just having a little glance behind. That's never a good thing. There's | :57:58. | :58:08.
:58:08. | :58:08. | ||
the 8km split. 22: 26. Kipsiro's been in good form this year. Fourth | :58:08. | :58:17.
in a freezing cold race. Kipsiro spends a lot of his time in Kenya | :58:17. | :58:23.
training. He knows quite a few of the Kenyan athletes pretty well. | :58:23. | :58:29.
Kipsiro does train out in Kenya quite a bit. Mo Farah has linked in | :58:29. | :58:35.
with him quite a few times to train. Wilson Kipsang and Moses Kipsiro | :58:35. | :58:39.
will know each other pretty well. It will be interesting to see how early | :58:39. | :58:44.
hi hi will wind this up a little bit. He's probably not as confident | :58:44. | :58:50.
in his closing 100 metres finish as he would have been a few years back. | :58:50. | :58:55.
Hi hi not looking distressed but that right arm there always starts | :58:55. | :59:01.
to get a little more acsen you too eighted. We all have little things | :59:01. | :59:10.
when we become tired which are more noticeable. He says he did that | :59:10. | :59:13.
because he carried his books to school in that arm. Why you would | :59:13. | :59:21.
want to three your books around, who knows. I suppose it is the way I | :59:21. | :59:26.
would nod my head and it would get worse. He's still looking controlled | :59:26. | :59:34.
and relaxed out there. He's cutting across Moses Kipsiro out there. | :59:34. | :59:41.
Wilson Kipsang's rallying a little. Looked as though he was struggling | :59:41. | :59:45.
but Wilson Kipsang may be anticipating the finish. We know | :59:45. | :59:53.
Moses Kipsiro can finish quickly. Not sure whether Kipsang sprinting | :59:53. | :59:59.
is there. Frankfurt was his break through a few years ago. Kipsang | :59:59. | :00:03.
looking relaxed. Haile well aware of the danger. He's had this his own | :00:03. | :00:08.
way on many occasions here in Manchester. He's won this on-Five-0 | :00:08. | :00:14.
cakeses. Will it be five in a row for Haile here? Can he hold off the | :00:14. | :00:21.
challenge from these two? ? These two maybe expected Haile to have | :00:21. | :00:27.
picked it up a bit more before this now and are wondering whether she | :00:27. | :00:33.
should pick up the pace or keep in reserve anything which may happen in | :00:33. | :00:37.
the finishing stages. But it is making your mind up time. They must | :00:37. | :00:45.
be inside the last kilometre now. Just past 9km point. This bit Haile | :00:45. | :00:51.
has an advantage. If you know how the finish pans out you know when to | :00:51. | :00:54.
make your effort. Egg one of the others to make an effort and you can | :00:54. | :00:59.
respond off that. He has an advantage here over Kipsang and | :00:59. | :01:04.
Kipsiro. He's done it so many times before. This will be late. It is not | :01:04. | :01:09.
a break them and come cruising in waving to the crowd. It will be a | :01:09. | :01:12.
big effort over the last few hundred metres. As the crowds are gathering | :01:12. | :01:16.
here, there are a lot of people here at the finish line now. They are | :01:16. | :01:21.
being told what's happening. They are aware there are three men in | :01:21. | :01:26.
contention here. They've less than half a mile to go. Cross the main | :01:26. | :01:30.
road, cross the roundabout. Take a little left. From that point on they | :01:30. | :01:35.
can... See the finish. Kipsang, Kipsiro and hi highly. It is a long | :01:35. | :01:40.
run into the finish. Ken sang decided to push it on. Haile, just | :01:40. | :01:44.
for the moment, struggling to go with that. A couple of years ago he | :01:44. | :01:48.
would have covered that easily. He just doesn't have the same pop in | :01:48. | :01:53.
his legs. He has a lot on his plate, a lot of different businesses | :01:53. | :01:57.
running in Ethiopia. Typically his day is get his training done in the | :01:57. | :02:03.
morning, then go into work. He told me yesterday he's opening up a | :02:03. | :02:11.
coffee plantation. That he is -- that's his latest project. He's | :02:11. | :02:14.
certainly not training at the level he was four or five or six years | :02:14. | :02:24.
:02:24. | :02:26. | ||
ago. The first expression does not change that much, he had given up | :02:26. | :02:32.
the lead, he has given up the win. Unless he unleashes something | :02:32. | :02:40.
brilliant, it is between Wilson Kipsang and Moses Kipsiro. As they | :02:40. | :02:44.
come under the railway bridge we will be able to see them come into | :02:44. | :02:54.
:02:54. | :02:55. | ||
sight. This is going to turn into a big sprint finish. Wilson Kipsang, | :02:55. | :03:03.
the marathon runner, has he got the pace? A sprint to the line. And now | :03:03. | :03:08.
he starts to move away, Wilson Kipsang trying to respond to Moses | :03:08. | :03:17.
Kipsiro, but he is not going to catch the Ugandan. The Ugandan wins | :03:17. | :03:22.
the great Manchester run, and the great Haile Gebrselassie, for once, | :03:22. | :03:32.
:03:32. | :03:35. | ||
hast to take a lower position. A pretty good performance. The years | :03:35. | :03:42.
catch up for everybody. I am not sure how proud he is to be the | :03:42. | :03:47.
quickest man over the age of 40 at ten kilometres. In the end, just a | :03:47. | :03:54.
little bit of pace lacking. focus now is more on coming to these | :03:54. | :03:59.
races, having fun, running fast, but he is not committed to the same | :03:59. | :04:05.
level of training he used to be. One thing he can definitely say is that | :04:05. | :04:13.
he is over 40. His birthday was April the 18th, so he is 40. There | :04:13. | :04:19.
is some discussion that he may be a little bit older than that. He is | :04:19. | :04:23.
doing amazingly well, and he is pretty much committed to coming back | :04:23. | :04:30.
next year as well. Well, it was not five in a row. He was beaten by two | :04:30. | :04:40.
:04:40. | :05:02. | ||
very good athletes. Moses Kipsiro runners. Johnny has done well to | :05:02. | :05:10.
come before him. A must -- a much better performance from Wilson | :05:10. | :05:17.
Kipsang. Athletes are coming in thick and fast now. Stephen | :05:17. | :05:24.
Scullion, we have just seen finishing there. A good day to post | :05:24. | :05:31.
sometimes. There were quite a lot of British men out there who will be | :05:31. | :05:37.
hoping, the 30 minute mark has just gone. That is always a good | :05:37. | :05:47.
:05:47. | :05:50. | ||
benchmark, under 30 minutes. This is probably one of the best road races | :05:50. | :05:57.
this country has ever seen over this distance. The runners will continue | :05:57. | :06:04.
coming in here. James Walsh, left of the picture. I thought he might have | :06:04. | :06:13.
done a little bit better today. Just inside 31 minutes. They are going to | :06:13. | :06:18.
continue for the next couple of hours because the streets are | :06:18. | :06:22.
filling up with the massed ranks of this ten kilometre race. But there | :06:22. | :06:32.
:06:32. | :06:47. | ||
are, the final result of the elite athlete to cross the line. A little | :06:47. | :06:53.
bit of a procession, but what a procession for Tirunesh Dibaba, a | :06:53. | :07:00.
new course record putting her ninth on the all-time list. Gemma Steel, a | :07:00. | :07:09.
good performance from her in fourth place. Two very good races in the | :07:09. | :07:15.
wheelchair event. Simon Lawson retained his title. In the women's | :07:15. | :07:21.
event, Nikki Emerson just finished in a sprint with Jane Egan. And Liz | :07:21. | :07:31.
:07:31. | :07:41. | ||
line. They will be coming through for many hours to come. Phil Jones | :07:41. | :07:50.
is with a gaggle of five live presenters. BBC five live gang doing | :07:50. | :08:00.
:08:00. | :08:00. | ||
the BBC proud today. You will know their boy -- -- you will know their | :08:00. | :08:07.
voices well. What was it like taking part in the race today. It was sunny | :08:07. | :08:15.
and hot, I could have done with it raining. We want to get in there and | :08:15. | :08:21.
get it over and done with. I mention the heat, but Michelle, you have | :08:21. | :08:28.
some extra ventilation. I certainly do, in the form of a massive hole. | :08:28. | :08:35.
So what is the story behind that? asked my boyfriend to iron my top | :08:35. | :08:43.
this morning, and this is how he handed it back to me. She just | :08:43. | :08:51.
wanted to flash her bra, I think. is normally very good at ironing, | :08:51. | :08:56.
but I do not know what happened this morning. No such mishaps for you | :08:56. | :09:03.
this morning, Phil? No, the only problem is I am carrying an injury. | :09:03. | :09:12.
I had to shave my legs to get some treatment on it. Hopefully it will | :09:12. | :09:21.
hold up and I am looking to get in in around 27 minutes! Is that a true | :09:21. | :09:30.
story, about the leg I mean? Do not put your camera down on my legs, my | :09:30. | :09:36.
legs are hairier and far whiter. It is beautiful weather, we are used to | :09:36. | :09:42.
this in this part of England, aren't we? It will be a great day. The last | :09:42. | :09:47.
time we saw you at the Great North Run you had a fantastic race. | :09:47. | :09:54.
beat this guy. We try not to mention it too often. He has something to | :09:54. | :10:04.
:10:04. | :10:08. | ||
prove today. You can tell you work in sport, the competitive nature is | :10:08. | :10:14.
coming out. Have a fantastic race. Thanks for talking to us. Good | :10:14. | :10:21.
banter from the BBC crowds, one or two pathetic excuses as well. Who | :10:21. | :10:28.
irons their shirts before they run? They will be joining the masses, a | :10:28. | :10:33.
lot of them already out there on the roads. They will be out there for | :10:33. | :10:37.
the next couple of hours, everyone getting a chance to complete the ten | :10:37. | :10:44.
K. The streets will be filled, and it is a great event. This is the | :10:44. | :10:50.
11th addition of the event. It has just got bigger and bigger each | :10:50. | :11:00.

people, so often we have heard of the motivation for people to run on | :16:10. | :16:13.
behalf of other people, I am surprised there that no one asked | :16:13. | :16:16.
Denise if she was going to run it one day, no pressure. I am surprised | :16:16. | :16:19.
there that no one asked Denise if she was going to run it one day, no | :16:19. | :16:21.
pressure. The messages keep flooding in. The messages keep flooding in. I | :16:21. | :16:24.
have had a message from Rachel Allen I have had a message from Rachel | :16:24. | :16:26.
Allen who says, who says, please wish Catherine a good day. Please | :16:26. | :16:31.
wish Catherine a good day. It is a good day for a lot of people out | :16:31. | :16:40.
there. It is a good day for a lot of people out there. | :16:40. | :16:43.
Yesterday there was a lovely reception for Haile Gebrselassie and | :16:43. | :16:48.
some of the other stars just setting the scene for what's happening | :16:48. | :16:53.
today. We've heard one lot of people running on behalf of somebody else. | :16:53. | :16:58.
That's the theme. We'll hear from a man now who's running today to | :16:58. | :17:02.
celebrate his recovery from a very serious illness last year. Like so | :17:02. | :17:08.
many other people, he's also come up with an original way to get | :17:08. | :17:14.
sponsored. I'd felt generally unwe will for a week or so. Like I had a | :17:14. | :17:19.
bit of a cold. I went to the doctors a couple of times. I'd started not | :17:19. | :17:25.
being able to breathe properly. They sent me to A&E and from there to | :17:25. | :17:31.
intensive care. A day later on to a ventilator and then an he can mow | :17:31. | :17:35.
machine on critical care. That's the last I can remember for three weeks. | :17:35. | :17:43.
I was unconscious. For a young person like Sam to get pneumonia to | :17:43. | :17:48.
the point where a breathing machine is failing to oxygen eight you the | :17:48. | :17:58.
:17:58. | :17:59. | ||
outlook was grim. He was dying. was extremely sick when he came in. | :17:59. | :18:04.
ECMO is basically oxygen eighting the blood outside the body. It | :18:04. | :18:09.
involves a pipe pumping blood round the body through the oxygenator, | :18:09. | :18:16.
then the blood goes back into the body. Lots of blood transfusions of | :18:16. | :18:23.
red blood cells. He received lots of platelets which is a different blood | :18:23. | :18:27.
component. At the time you see bags going up you don't really think how | :18:27. | :18:33.
the blood's got there in the first place. Just amazing care and the | :18:33. | :18:38.
most hi-tech wonderful stuff going on. It was amazing. When I first | :18:38. | :18:43.
came round, I was so weak I could barely move my body around. I can | :18:43. | :18:49.
remember brushing my teeth and not being able to move my hand so I had | :18:49. | :18:57.
to move my head to brush my teeth at one point. He had no stamina or | :18:58. | :19:03.
endurance he'd not moved, breathed stretched for three weeks. | :19:03. | :19:09.
nurses kept saying do you want to watch St V. The first thing I saw | :19:09. | :19:13.
was the London Marathon. I was in floods of tears. I really didn't | :19:13. | :19:17.
think I'd be able to walk again. That's quite hard to battle with | :19:17. | :19:22.
when you are used to having a structured regime and challenging | :19:22. | :19:25.
goals that you can achieve easily. There were moments where it was hard | :19:25. | :19:32.
for him to lift his spirits to be motivated to carry on. Having seen | :19:32. | :19:37.
the marathon when I was ill and the emotions it stirred up I thought, | :19:37. | :19:42.
right, I'll do the London Marathon. Now the next challenges are the 10K | :19:42. | :19:47.
on Sunday. I'm doing a half Half Ironman Triathlon in August. | :19:47. | :19:52.
managed to run the London Marathon in three hours 20 minutes. That is | :19:52. | :19:57.
astonishing for somebody whose lungs were such a mess a year ago. | :19:57. | :20:03.
wanted to do something to help the ECMO team. I had a lot of blood | :20:03. | :20:09.
transfusions when I was there. I thought rather than ask people for | :20:09. | :20:14.
money why not ask people to pledge to become blood donors. That's where | :20:14. | :20:23.
it came from. We've set up our website which is Pledge A Pint. We | :20:23. | :20:30.
are trying to get 500 new blood donors to donate for us. I've | :20:30. | :20:35.
pledged mine. The thermometer's going up. It is great to say I've | :20:35. | :20:40.
done that. It has gone from my vanes into that pot. There may be another | :20:40. | :20:50.
Sam out there who needs it. He's a real success zorb story. I am a | :20:50. | :20:56.
non-runner. I'd like to do it in less than one hour ten. Which is | :20:56. | :21:02.
almost double the time. He ale be by my side. Sam will keep me steady and | :21:02. | :21:10.
we'll go over the line together. really is just a stunning day here | :21:10. | :21:18.
in Manchester. Runners going past Old Trafford. If you're from the red | :21:18. | :21:22.
side happy but a little less if you're from the blue side. Streaming | :21:22. | :21:28.
through. Earlier on, we saw some superb elite racers. This is what | :21:28. | :21:38.
:21:38. | :21:50. | ||
were the elite wheelchair racers. It was Stuart Bloor, from a Stockport, | :21:50. | :21:57.
who got things underway. Then it was a two-horse race between Simon | :21:57. | :22:05.
Lawson and Phil Hoggs as they passed Old Trafford it was the defending | :22:05. | :22:10.
champion Simon Lawson who sped away to win by over a minute. A brilliant | :22:10. | :22:14.
time. As far as the women were concerned, Nikki Emerson gaining | :22:14. | :22:23.
victory over last year's champion, just, Jane Egan. I am on and Nikki. | :22:23. | :22:27.
Defended your title and pretty comfortably? I was happy with | :22:27. | :22:31.
today's race. Nicer conditions than last year. I think I went quicker | :22:31. | :22:35.
than last year. You left a lot of clear distance between you and the | :22:35. | :22:40.
rest of the field? Phil was pretty close early on. After about two | :22:40. | :22:48.
miles I broke lose. I had a nice cushion towards the end. Nikki, | :22:49. | :22:53.
closer for you? Really close. Nice to have it that close in a women's | :22:54. | :22:58.
race. A nice tactical day. You gave me a smile at the start. To say | :22:59. | :23:05.
hello. Was that a confidence smile? I've just come back from injury. | :23:05. | :23:09.
I've been training really hard. I was really excited to race today. | :23:09. | :23:17.
Maybe not confident but hopeful. Well done to both of you. | :23:17. | :23:21.
Fab Reece Muamba got the women's elite race off at the very beginning | :23:21. | :23:26.
of the morning's proceedings. Not long before Tirunesh Dibaba found | :23:26. | :23:31.
herself moving to the front. There was a Stunell in behind Azores | :23:31. | :23:38.
jostled for position. Christelle Daunay from France stumbled. She got | :23:38. | :23:44.
up and did well to get herself back involved in the race. But Tirunesh | :23:44. | :23:50.
Dibaba was away. It was never really going to be a race at the front | :23:50. | :23:58.
other than a procession for the double Olympic champion. The only | :23:58. | :24:02.
question was how quick would she run. It was a big personal best for | :24:02. | :24:08.
her. It was a new course record. It was the ninth fastest ever 10km on | :24:08. | :24:14.
the road. The winner of the women's race Tirunesh Dibaba beside me. | :24:14. | :24:21.
She'll speak through an interpreter. How did you feel it went. ? A superb | :24:21. | :24:28.
run? TRANSLATION: It was a fantastic race | :24:28. | :24:37.
for me. I believe I ran a good race. It was a good run for me. We'd hoped | :24:37. | :24:46.
to see you Tirunesh run in London but you had problems with an injury. | :24:46. | :24:56.
:24:56. | :24:58. | ||
Everything is fine now? TRANSLATION: I had an injury but I | :24:58. | :25:03.
have recovered from that. Today I run very well and showed that I am | :25:03. | :25:08.
in a good position and I'm planning to run London next year. We're | :25:08. | :25:12.
looking forward to seeing you in London next year. Will that be your | :25:12. | :25:18.
first marathon? TRANSLATION: Yes, it will be my | :25:18. | :25:26.
first marathon. What about the rest of this summer season? | :25:26. | :25:36.
:25:36. | :25:38. | ||
TRANSLATION: I'll be running the 5,000 next week to qualify for | :25:38. | :25:45.
Moscow. Tirunesh, brilliant to see you here today. Very well done. | :25:45. | :25:50.
Thank you. From one great champion to another. | :25:50. | :25:53.
All eyes were on Haile Gebrselassie to see whether he could win this | :25:53. | :25:58.
race for the sixth time. He's won it the last four years in a row. But | :25:58. | :26:03.
the years are catching up with him a little. Another sub target was the | :26:03. | :26:08.
fact he's beyond the age of 40 and could he break the world age best | :26:08. | :26:16.
for that. No doubt about that happening but Wilson Kipsang and | :26:16. | :26:23.
Moses Kipsiro, the track champion forged away in the last kilometre. | :26:23. | :26:29.
They had it to themselves and in the end it was Kipsiro who broke away to | :26:29. | :26:34.
take the win. Alongside me I have the winner of | :26:34. | :26:38.
the men's race Moses Kipsiro and Haile Gebrselassie. Moses, it was a | :26:38. | :26:42.
great race. Were you always confident you had the sprint at the | :26:42. | :26:52.
:26:52. | :26:57. | ||
end? Yes, the race -- race was comfortable. I enjoyed it. When it | :26:57. | :27:05.
came to one kilometre to go I thought I have to wait to finish | :27:05. | :27:09.
then I sprint. They were saying it is not an easy finish. You have to | :27:09. | :27:18.
time it right? There are marks with 200 metres to go. I knew now it is | :27:19. | :27:23.
almost now finishing. Then I saw the finishing and started sprinting. | :27:23. | :27:30.
Great job. Let he in come to you Haile. You couldn't keep up with | :27:30. | :27:38.
those boys? Difficult. They follow me and in the last 2km they | :27:38. | :27:44.
sprinted. This is normal. I cannot change the gear from second to | :27:44. | :27:50.
third. The gear is hard to change at this age. The consolation is you | :27:50. | :27:57.
have a world record for over-40? Is it good or bad? On one hand it is | :27:57. | :28:05.
good. I'm so happy, of course. I tried to win. It didn't work. Still, | :28:05. | :28:10.
I came back with something. A word about the atmosphere and crowd? It | :28:10. | :28:18.
is a great event? Great fans. Cheering. The weather was perfect. | :28:18. | :28:26.
It was really very nice. There are many people shouting Haile | :28:26. | :28:32.
Gebrselassie, and I enjoyed it. I say they are shouting for Haile | :28:32. | :28:42.
Gebrselassie and also me! I congratulate Haile Gebrselassie he's | :28:42. | :28:52.
a very goat athlete. When I started run running he was my hero. I wanted | :28:52. | :29:00.
to be like him. Today, I'm very happy to run with Haile. A pleasure. | :29:00. | :29:06.
Great job, Moses. Last question to you Haile. Back next year? | :29:06. | :29:11.
course. Fantastic year. What can I do. I'm happy to come back and run | :29:11. | :29:16.
here. I'm sure Brendan will have the contract out ready for you to sign. | :29:16. | :29:23.
Thank you both very much. That was a lovely interview. What a charming | :29:23. | :29:31.
man Moses Kipsiro is. Smiling about interviewing with Tirunesh Dibaba. | :29:31. | :29:41.
:29:41. | :29:55. | ||
Here's a graphic with the best Gemma and Helen are alongside me. A | :29:55. | :30:00.
sprint finish. How happy were you? Reasonably happy. I find this course | :30:00. | :30:06.
quite tough. After last year, had a bit of a cold but I did better than | :30:06. | :30:12.
last year. I wanted a bit more really. After the run at Bristol a | :30:12. | :30:20.
few weeks ago and running 32: 15. Yeah. Just wasn't the day today | :30:20. | :30:24.
unfortunately. Helen? I've run a lot quicker on this course in the past. | :30:24. | :30:28.
I'm quite pleased with my result. I've had a few niggles coming into | :30:28. | :30:33.
the race. Even on Tuesday, I was in the physio getting sorted. So thanks | :30:33. | :30:38.
to him I got round in one piece and my body felt pretty good. I'm really | :30:38. | :30:44.
pleased with the result today even though it is a lot slower but it | :30:44. | :30:49.
shows I'm in the right step. I've another 10K in two weeks' time in | :30:49. | :30:54.
New York. You're both off to New York. What follows for the rest of | :30:54. | :31:00.
the summer season? I have to try and get on the track and get more speed. | :31:00. | :31:07.
Maybe a few 5Ks on the track. Yeah. Hopefully. And for you, Helen? | :31:07. | :31:13.
looking to do a couple of 5Ks in July. Then start marathon training | :31:13. | :31:17.
in October. That's the plan for me this summer. Thank you and well | :31:17. | :31:23.
done. Even if you're not perhaps quite as happy as you'd hoped to be? | :31:23. | :31:28.
Thank you. Thank you. Some fine running and pushing across | :31:28. | :31:37.
the elite races but that's only part of the Manchester run. Kirsty | :31:37. | :31:42.
carried the torch with David Beckham into the opening ceremony in the | :31:42. | :31:47.
Commonwealth Games and has run in every Manchester run since wearing | :31:47. | :31:57.
:31:57. | :32:00. | ||
the number one. In that whole night, you suddenly became famous | :32:00. | :32:10.
around the whole world. What was that like? It was amazing. It was a | :32:10. | :32:14.
really good night, and I did not know David was going to be there | :32:14. | :32:22.
until I got there. Kirsty is an amazing young lady and she has been | :32:22. | :32:28.
part of the Francis house story. She was first filmed when she was six, | :32:28. | :32:33.
sitting on the lawn. People did not think she was going to live very | :32:33. | :32:39.
long, and that began the Kirsty appeal. And for many years it was | :32:39. | :32:44.
about raising money to secure the future of Francis house. Since then | :32:44. | :32:52.
she has been getting on with her own life, she has got her GCSEs, she has | :32:53. | :32:56.
gone to college. She is on high levels of oxygen and in a | :32:56. | :33:01.
wheelchair, but she is enjoying being a teenager. Francis house is | :33:01. | :33:09.
one of many hospices around England and Wales, we provide respite | :33:09. | :33:14.
support and end of life care to families who have children with | :33:14. | :33:19.
life-threatening conditions. Medical interventions and advances in | :33:19. | :33:28.
medical -- in medication mean that many of our young people are over | :33:28. | :33:33.
the age of 16 and need the support we can give. We are hoping to open | :33:33. | :33:39.
the building next door to double the size of our respite capacity, and | :33:39. | :33:45.
improve our end of life support for young people. And do it in a more | :33:45. | :33:52.
adult environment. It is to look after more teenagers so they have | :33:52. | :33:58.
space away from young people. There are computers, you can do more stuff | :33:58. | :34:02.
and watch films that you want to watch not watching what younger | :34:02. | :34:10.
people want to watch. It is going well so far, we have raised 1.5 | :34:10. | :34:17.
million so far. We need to raise 3.6 million. She has taken part in every | :34:17. | :34:25.
Great Manchester Run. What is it like for you at the start of the | :34:25. | :34:33.
race? All of those people there cheering and supporting you? I feel | :34:33. | :34:37.
excited, it is really good that all the supporters have turned out to | :34:37. | :34:46.
see us. It is a really good day out and you get to see all the runners. | :34:46. | :34:53.
I am here with Keely and Jonathan. How has the town been affected by | :34:53. | :35:01.
the murder of Lee Rigby? It is a close community. The support from | :35:01. | :35:06.
the hometown has been really good, floral tributes coming in, church | :35:06. | :35:13.
services happening. It has been a real shock to the community, to be | :35:13. | :35:20.
honest. He is in our thoughts today, definitely. In everybody's thoughts | :35:20. | :35:27.
and minds. But you are actually not running for him, even though he is | :35:27. | :35:33.
close to your heart. You are raising funds for a local school. Yes, we | :35:33. | :35:37.
are running for our two Sun schools. But I am sure everyone running will | :35:38. | :35:47.
be thinking of Lee Rigby. Yes, I think we would echo that. For many | :35:47. | :35:52.
runners, the events of this week will be very much in their thoughts. | :35:52. | :35:56.
So many charities out there who benefit to the tune of millions of | :35:56. | :36:01.
pounds thanks to these running events. It has been one of the great | :36:01. | :36:09.
stories over the last 15-20 years. Yes, they are personal challenges, | :36:09. | :36:15.
but so much good is done by so many people taking part in such events. | :36:15. | :36:21.
It all got under way earlier on, we saw Greg Rutherford joined on the | :36:21. | :36:25.
starter's rostrum by Fabrice Muamba. He has been a tremendous | :36:25. | :36:31.
inspiration to many of the runners today. Just over a year ago he was a | :36:31. | :36:35.
seemingly fit and healthy premiership footballer, then one day | :36:35. | :36:45.
:36:45. | :36:49. | ||
fighting for his life after collapsing on the pitch. Fabrice | :36:49. | :36:51.
Muamba is rushed to intensive care after the quarter-final against | :36:51. | :37:01.
:37:01. | :37:02. | ||
Spurs is suspended. Tonight he is described as seriously ill. | :37:02. | :37:08.
emotional Fabrice Muamba returns to the Reebok Stadium seven weeks after | :37:08. | :37:17.
suffering a cardiac arrest during which his heart stopped beating. One | :37:17. | :37:22.
year later, he is in Manchester headlining a publicity event for the | :37:22. | :37:28.
Great Manchester Run, and for his new campaign hearts and goals. It is | :37:28. | :37:35.
a miracle he is here at all. It is difficult because you do not know | :37:35. | :37:43.
exactly how to make an adjustment. Retiring from football so early. To | :37:43. | :37:51.
me, it has been a challenge, but at the same time I embrace it. I think | :37:51. | :37:57.
I have the power to speak about it because it happened to me. I know a | :37:57. | :38:02.
lot of people have been affected by this issue. Hopefully we can find a | :38:02. | :38:09.
way to resolve this problem. Sudden cardiac arrest is the UK's biggest | :38:09. | :38:14.
killer. He is now an ambassador to and has set up hearts and goals to | :38:14. | :38:19.
raise awareness of his condition and spread the word about an important | :38:19. | :38:25.
piece of kit that could save lives. If you watch closely the video of | :38:25. | :38:30.
what happened to me at White Hart Lane, one thing that helped me was a | :38:30. | :38:40.
:38:40. | :38:49. | ||
inspired over 100 people to run for him in the Great Manchester Run | :38:49. | :38:58.
today. 92 of them are representing each of the Premier league clubs. | :38:58. | :39:05.
I am an inspiration to you, thank you. But I see myself as just a guy, | :39:05. | :39:10.
a guy who used to play football. Stopped playing football for health | :39:10. | :39:16.
issues. One man taking part have been a constant source of support to | :39:16. | :39:24.
him. What was incredible was to see somebody who was almost dead, to | :39:24. | :39:30.
make the remarkable recovery that he did, then to take on this role and | :39:30. | :39:36.
say, actually, this is an opportunity. I thought, I have never | :39:36. | :39:43.
done a run before, it is a bit of a challenge. For a lot of people ten | :39:43. | :39:53.
kilometres is easy, but for me it is a bit of an uphill struggle. I am | :39:53. | :39:57.
very honoured and thankful that people would take time out of their | :39:58. | :40:03.
busy schedule, come here and get together to run. I wish them all | :40:03. | :40:11.
good luck. I am looking forward to seeing them. Thank you. You have had | :40:11. | :40:15.
a busy morning, and you have had such a huge reception, what has it | :40:15. | :40:21.
been like? The reception has been great, there has been a good turnout | :40:21. | :40:29.
and the weather is great. Your charity, you have been such a great | :40:29. | :40:37.
ambassador for it. We are trying to raise awareness. Today I have a good | :40:37. | :40:42.
number of people running to raise money. Hopefully we will go out | :40:42. | :40:49.
there and give it our best shot. must find it overwhelming. It is | :40:49. | :40:54.
just over a year since the incident that changed your life. I am just | :40:54. | :40:58.
grateful to be alive and to be able to share moments with my family and | :40:58. | :41:05.
friends. You have to take it in and look at the bigger picture. I am | :41:05. | :41:11.
here now and I am able to enjoy life. It has been great to see you, | :41:11. | :41:15.
so many crowds, and hoping to raise a lot of money for the incredible | :41:15. | :41:25.
:41:25. | :41:29. | ||
charity. The charity alone, so many people die every single year. | :41:29. | :41:32.
Hopefully we can make sure a defibrillator is available for as | :41:32. | :41:39.
many people as possible. We want to put them in as many places as we | :41:39. | :41:48.
can. It is great to see you. course, Fabrice Muamba was saved by | :41:48. | :41:52.
the swift action of medical personnel. There are many of them | :41:53. | :42:00.
here today looking after all of the runners. It is a warm day, lots of | :42:00. | :42:05.
water are being taken on board. Particularly for those who have worn | :42:05. | :42:15.
:42:15. | :42:19. | ||
fancy dress costumes. Anyone wearing fancy dress today will be very, very | :42:19. | :42:29.
:42:29. | :42:32. | ||
hot indeed. Some people getting to start. You cannot get everyone on | :42:32. | :42:39.
the roads at the same time, so people are given particular start | :42:39. | :42:44.
times according to the numbers they are wearing. They are all wearing | :42:44. | :42:54.
:42:54. | :43:03. | ||
different coloured numbers. And it from Emmerdale. Phil got a chance to | :43:03. | :43:13.
:43:13. | :43:20. | ||
Run without the Emmerdale going. A whole swathe of them here on the VIP | :43:20. | :43:28.
bus. Nice sunny weather, is that good for you? I do not know. I do | :43:28. | :43:37.
not run very much. I am not used to this. We see you all the time in | :43:37. | :43:46.
fancy dress, today the getup is, what? It is meant to be a monkey. It | :43:46. | :43:50.
seemed a good idea when it was freezing cold this week, but not | :43:50. | :43:56.
such a good idea to date. Nicola Wheeler, you have just come back | :43:56. | :44:04.
from a set injury. Yes, this is my first run since then. I love | :44:04. | :44:13.
Manchester, so it is great. Are you feeling OK, will you be all right? | :44:13. | :44:21.
do not know, but it is for charity. She will get round easily, she will | :44:21. | :44:31.
:44:31. | :44:33. | ||
drag us all around. I thought you were a beaver. It looks very 70s. | :44:33. | :44:39.
thought it was Russ Abbot. Whatever it is, you always enter into the | :44:39. | :44:46.
spirit of it and you are running for a great cause. All the best. They | :44:46. | :44:52.
have already been out there and completed their race. We are sitting | :44:52. | :44:57.
at the finish line, they are streaming in front of us. I went for | :44:57. | :45:01.
a little jolt yesterday, lovely weather. Paula, where would you be | :45:01. | :45:11.
in this? For the first part, very slow then I tend to speed up a bit. | :45:11. | :45:14.
After the surgery there was a little while when I thought I would not get | :45:14. | :45:21.
back to running at all. It makes you appreciate it no matter how slow it | :45:21. | :45:27.
is. I run for about one hour a day at the moment. You still did not | :45:27. | :45:36.
answer the question. Faster than 50 minutes. You could have given people | :45:36. | :45:39.
a great pleasure, people running faster than 50 minutes could have | :45:39. | :45:47.
beaten you! It is nice just to take part and be able to get in amongst | :45:47. | :45:53.
it. It is an important part of my life and I get enjoyment for it and | :45:53. | :45:58.
that is as important as racing sometimes. -- I get enjoyment from | :45:58. | :46:06.
it. It is great to see so many people I enjoying this event. | :46:06. | :46:10.
Thankfully we have got some good weather today, it has been pretty | :46:10. | :46:15.
horrid for the last few weeks. But the sun is shining today in | :46:15. | :46:25.
:46:25. | :46:42. | ||
Manchester. Manchester has really established itself as a great city | :46:42. | :46:47.
of sport. Rather those Commonwealth Games. Paula will remember it well. | :46:47. | :46:52.
2002, that opening ceremony with David beam ham. Seems so long ago. | :46:52. | :46:58.
That was when it really all kicked off, this Great Manchester Run. It | :46:58. | :47:08.
:47:08. | :47:19. | ||
kicked off the following year, 2003. stories to be told. At the end of | :47:19. | :47:25.
it, so much money being raised. They are brave, aren't they? You don't | :47:26. | :47:35.
even know who they are? I'm turning to my child expert here. That's ups | :47:35. | :47:44.
Upsy Daisy from In The Night Garden. And in front, it's Peppa Pig. | :47:44. | :47:52.
do you mean, of course? Do you not know any of them? It is my duty as a | :47:52. | :47:57.
doting grandfather! There is lots of fancy dress. Conditions in the shade | :47:57. | :48:03.
are quite cool. Once you're in the beautiful sunshine, it really is a | :48:03. | :48:07.
wonderful experience. 10K, you were talking about the distance and | :48:07. | :48:13.
Paula's injuries earlier on. This is a good distance for a beginner to | :48:13. | :48:21.
start with? It is. 10K is something really anybody can do in six to | :48:21. | :48:26.
eight weeks if you're already some sort of runner. People do a 5K | :48:26. | :48:35.
first, then the 10K. Then the half marathon or the marathon. We've a | :48:35. | :48:39.
great view of everything down at the finish line in Deansgate. Across | :48:39. | :48:43.
from us, I can see Jonathan Edwards who has a very special guest with | :48:43. | :48:52.
him now. I certainly have. Tomorrow, there's a mini run. Alongside me I | :48:52. | :48:57.
have Harley Lane. He contracted meningitis and lost his limbs. | :48:57. | :49:00.
Harley, are you looking forward to your big day tomorrow? Yes.You're | :49:00. | :49:05.
going to be starting the race? And somebody's told me you might be | :49:05. | :49:11.
taking part as well, is that right? Yes. Have you ever run that far | :49:11. | :49:21.
:49:21. | :49:23. | ||
before? No, you haven't. Have you? don't think so. How have you enjoyed | :49:23. | :49:33.
:49:33. | :49:35. | ||
today so far? Hmm!Who was your favourite? Did you like Haile? | :49:35. | :49:41.
sure. Not sure about Haile. He's getting a bit old. What about your | :49:41. | :49:46.
little brother. How about you? You having fun today? Yeah.We're going | :49:46. | :49:51.
to have a quick word with mum, now. You have a very brave young man | :49:51. | :49:57.
here? He's really brave. I've very proud of him. How do you think he's | :49:57. | :50:01.
looking forward to tomorrow. It's a big day for him? He's really | :50:01. | :50:07.
nervous. It is a big thing but he's looking forward to it. He's getting | :50:07. | :50:15.
more excited as the week's gone on. What has he been through? He lost | :50:15. | :50:21.
his limbs through meningitis. He us a lucky to have been here. He's a | :50:21. | :50:25.
really strong boy, fought through it and come out the other side. | :50:25. | :50:29.
wants to start and take part in the run tomorrow. How do you think that | :50:29. | :50:34.
will go? Hopefully he will do all right. When he was asked to start | :50:34. | :50:39.
the race he said yes, straight away. He was asked if he'd like to do it. | :50:39. | :50:45.
He will finish and he'll do really well. Harley. One last word. Do you | :50:45. | :50:51.
think you'll sleep tonight or will you be too excited? Too excited.I | :50:51. | :50:56.
thought you would be. I have a special guest. MrJohnny peacock. | :50:56. | :51:00.
Johnny. Come down. Have a little word with this brave young man, | :51:00. | :51:08.
Harley. Here. How are you doing? Fine. Johnny won a gold medal in the | :51:08. | :51:15.
Paralympics. Just like you, he had meningitis. I got meningitis when I | :51:15. | :51:21.
was five. It's all cool. Still me. Did you see Johnny run yesterday? | :51:21. | :51:27.
Did you see him in the Paralympics? He was the really quick one. I think | :51:27. | :51:33.
so. He was the one who ran away from everybody. Johnny, tell us about | :51:33. | :51:40.
yesterday. The first time Paralympians have been at the great | :51:40. | :51:47.
city Games. It was great to see inclusion. It is a stepping stone | :51:47. | :51:51.
for. That seeing how it works between Paralympic and able-bodied | :51:52. | :51:57.
events competing side by side. The public enjoy it. I'll happy compete | :51:57. | :52:02.
more and more in those situations. Your first race of the season. | :52:02. | :52:06.
You've had jury, changed your blades? It went well enough. I | :52:06. | :52:11.
wanted to be strong and powerful through the first 30 metres. After | :52:11. | :52:15.
that what happened, happened. It crumbled a bit. I only got to about | :52:15. | :52:21.
60. But I'm happenied with how the start went. How have you woken up | :52:21. | :52:26.
this morning? After the first competition of the day it is grim? | :52:26. | :52:32.
Looking forward to tomorrow. Not feeling too bad. We've got the | :52:32. | :52:38.
Birmingham Grand Prix. Towards the end of next month we've the World | :52:38. | :52:48.
:52:48. | :52:48. | ||
Championships in Lyon. Johnny, thanks for coming along today. And a | :52:48. | :52:56.
big thank you to you, young man. Good luck for tomorrow. OK.Nice | :52:56. | :53:02.
one. Great story. Hope he has a fantastic | :53:02. | :53:06.
day tomorrow even though he looks a little nervous about the whole | :53:06. | :53:16.
:53:16. | :53:17. | ||
thing. Difficult interview for Jonathan there. The city Games | :53:17. | :53:22.
yesterday, the 10K today and the kids get their chance tomorrow. I | :53:22. | :53:26.
hope the rain holds off for them. Forecast isn't as good for tomorrow. | :53:26. | :53:36.
:53:36. | :53:38. | ||
Fingers' crossed it will be OK. We've seen a few global champions in | :53:38. | :53:42.
action already today in the elite races. We're just about to hear the | :53:42. | :53:46.
story of another world champion who's been taking part in this event | :53:46. | :53:54.
from a sport you might not usually associate with running. | :53:54. | :54:00.
The title, 2005, Embassy World Snooker champion Shaun Murphy. | :54:00. | :54:03.
running for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital charity. A | :54:03. | :54:07.
family member of mine has been coming here since she was very | :54:08. | :54:13.
little, in fact, since she was born. They do great work for kids up and | :54:13. | :54:19.
down the country, not just in Manchester. Any slight bit of help I | :54:19. | :54:24.
can give them is worth it. We are the charity for the largest | :54:24. | :54:27.
Children's Hospital in the UK. We support treatment care and research | :54:28. | :54:32.
at the hospital. It means we are making life a bit easier for our | :54:32. | :54:39.
patients and their families. Hello! How are you all? When I come to the | :54:39. | :54:44.
hospital I try to get involved. If it is seeing kids, having a gate of | :54:44. | :54:50.
snooker with them in the play room. Just to add a bit of brightness to | :54:50. | :54:56.
kids' lives. What could be more important? You're in your United | :54:56. | :55:02.
States onesie. I'm not American!I didn't think you were! It was great | :55:02. | :55:08.
seeing the kids making banners. I was taking them home and put them up | :55:08. | :55:16.
to give me encouragement. She was born with her bladder on the | :55:16. | :55:25.
outside. We come every three months to out patients and this is like our | :55:25. | :55:30.
second home. We call it our posh apartment. It is so humbling, so | :55:30. | :55:33.
nice to see. It is this type of thing that the race is about. It is | :55:33. | :55:38.
not about who crosses the line first and all that. It is about doing good | :55:38. | :55:43.
and nice things for other people. That's the whole point of it. | :55:43. | :55:46.
amazing to have people like Sean come and visit the hospital and our | :55:46. | :55:52.
patients. He's very kindly donated a new snooker table for us for the | :55:52. | :55:56.
teenage zone. It can be quite boring, long stays in hospital for | :55:56. | :56:00.
children. Its really exciting to have interesting visitors and people | :56:00. | :56:04.
who can come to talk to them. Brighten up their day. A bit of a | :56:04. | :56:07.
change really. The children love it when people come in. It gets them | :56:07. | :56:11.
off the ward. Something to look forward to. It was really nice | :56:11. | :56:15.
people like Sean come and see the children and give their time to do | :56:15. | :56:21.
stuff with them. The Manchester run is such a big thing for Manchester. | :56:21. | :56:26.
It stops the city and not much causes the city to stop for a day. | :56:26. | :56:30.
Everybody turns out and supports everybody and gets involved. | :56:30. | :56:35.
Completely out of my comfort zone. Not anything I would see myself | :56:35. | :56:39.
doing when I got involved in snooker years ago. But being involved with | :56:39. | :56:43.
the royal Royal Manchester Children's Hospital here is | :56:43. | :56:47.
something which is very close to my heart. If me running around | :56:47. | :56:57.
:56:57. | :57:00. | ||
Manchester helps, then I'll do it. ALL: : good luck Sean! Thank you.We | :57:00. | :57:08.
saw the Fabrice Muamba story and you're wearing the Bolton Wanderers | :57:08. | :57:11.
colours for Hearts & Goals. How did you come to be involved? After what | :57:11. | :57:19.
happened last year I just had to wear the Bolton shirt to show my | :57:19. | :57:24.
support for Fabrice Muamba. It show you can do anything if you put your | :57:24. | :57:29.
mind to it. After six or seven millings, knowing what Fabrice did | :57:29. | :57:37.
it give me the energy to carry on. Seeing him start the race? He's our | :57:37. | :57:43.
hero. Amazing. All the people who've come out today respect him and | :57:43. | :57:48.
showed him that passion. You have played a great part in this today. | :57:48. | :57:57.
Well done. Thanks a lot.Not 24 hours ago, sir rich Richard Leece | :57:57. | :58:01.
the leader of Manchester City Council was at a reception regaling | :58:01. | :58:05.
us with a story about the organisers saying this will be a great event | :58:05. | :58:13.
but we're really sorry to have shut down your city. Sir Richard replied | :58:13. | :58:17.
that no, it's me who should be thanking you because the city, with | :58:17. | :58:23.
an event like this, is really going to open up. It gets more people into | :58:23. | :58:30.
the city, gets more people involved. It is not only the track events that | :58:30. | :58:35.
took part yesterday and today but more events tomorrow. Manchester is | :58:35. | :58:45.
:58:45. | :58:48. | ||
more events tomorrow. Manchester is more events tomorrow. Manchester is | :58:48. | :58:51.
more events tomorrow. Manchester is alive with sport. A mass of colour | :58:51. | :58:55.
have Steve and Paula alongside me. Paula's looking very glamorous. | :58:55. | :59:04.
Steve, you didn't make much of an effort. Hello. We're on air. | :59:04. | :59:11.
listen togs Rob Walker talking about us. I'm saying Paula's looking | :59:11. | :59:16.
glamorous and you... I'm going training after this. I would suggest | :59:16. | :59:21.
that I could probably go to the start line and run and get quicker | :59:22. | :59:27.
and I'm tressed for it. She looks better than me! She certainly does. | :59:27. | :59:31.
Beautiful day here. Not quite such a beautiful day yesterday in New York | :59:31. | :59:35.
for the Diamond League. Not what you'd combpt for this time of year | :59:35. | :59:43.
in New York. That mete has had bad weather forthe past couple of years. | :59:43. | :59:48.
It was cold, windy and wet. There were one or two good performances | :59:48. | :59:53.
There were not that many British athletes there. You almost feel | :59:53. | :59:58.
sorry for New York. It is a great city. But it has the worst of the | :59:58. | :00:01.
Diamond League meetings unfortunately. The weather didn't | :00:01. | :00:11.
:00:11. | :00:15. | ||
help yesterday. You mentioned Andhra ya, we saw how fast Monsho ran. | :00:15. | :00:19.
ran really fast in those conditions. She's going to be a force to be | :00:19. | :00:28.
reckoned with going into Moscow. trip triple jumpers couldn't even | :00:28. | :00:33.
make 16-and-a-half metres it was that windy. Christine attacked the | :00:33. | :00:41.
200. She's in lane six going backwards in the home straight. | :00:41. | :00:45.
Montu is one to beat this year. Interesting to see the way | :00:45. | :00:50.
Christine's approaching this season. She wants to get in the mix more? | :00:50. | :00:54.
Typically she'd come out later in the season and build slowly towards | :00:54. | :00:58.
a peak at the championships. She's trying to force herself to change | :00:58. | :01:01.
the way she runs races to commit a bit more in the first half of the | :01:01. | :01:06.
race. Unfortunately, the conditions there meant she paid the price for | :01:06. | :01:15.
combating. Hopefully that won't put her off trying it in other races. | :01:15. | :01:20.
She's not fit. If you're 100% fit to go into a race like that which the | :01:20. | :01:24.
weather conditions were tough as well. It was not something she | :01:24. | :01:30.
fancied. Siddo ewe didn't start either. Holly Bleasdale didn't | :01:30. | :01:38.
perform all that well. A real mixed bag of a day. Men's 5,000 was | :01:38. | :01:48.
:01:48. | :01:54. | ||
interested. There's a new Ethiopian talent threatening mow Faro. He was | :01:54. | :02:02.
a class a-- mow Faro -- Mo Farah. He ran a brilliant 3,000 metres in | :02:02. | :02:09.
Doha. It was an impressive run. Different conditions. They only ran | :02:09. | :02:15.
13: 10. He did most of it on his own. As the season progress he is | :02:15. | :02:22.
we'll see Mo in Eugene next week. This will be the guy to beat. | :02:22. | :02:28.
think mmm o will be watching him with a fluttering heart? He will. | :02:28. | :02:33.
Trying to get a gauge for how he will race. How he will go up gents | :02:33. | :02:36.
him. He tends to finish the races | :02:36. | :02:46.
:02:46. | :02:48. | ||
strongly like Mo does. He needs to think about his tactics. I do not | :02:48. | :02:53.
think he has made his mind up yet. I think he is going in with both | :02:53. | :03:01.
options, but his first focus will be the 10,000 metres. Let's look at the | :03:01. | :03:09.
men's 800 metres. Andrew had a pretty good start, he had been in | :03:10. | :03:15.
trouble this year with one or two injury problems. I am not sure he | :03:15. | :03:21.
was expecting much from his first couple of races. It was good to come | :03:21. | :03:26.
second, it was a better race for him. Andrew is getting good at | :03:26. | :03:35.
racing people. It is, can you get through the round, get to the final, | :03:35. | :03:40.
as he did last year, and then be competitive in the final. I think | :03:40. | :03:48.
his season will get better as it progresses. One of the big news | :03:48. | :03:51.
stories in British athletics has been the resignation of Peter | :03:51. | :03:56.
Eriksson and Neil Black will be taking the British team to Moscow. | :03:56. | :03:59.
What did you make of that, British athletics have been losing people | :03:59. | :04:07.
pretty fast. For me, it was surprising. Peter Eriksson has been | :04:07. | :04:12.
in this country for 4-macro or five years. To leave the country and take | :04:12. | :04:21.
the job, something is just not right. In that respect it is a | :04:21. | :04:24.
little bit disappointing, it does leave the team a little bit stuck | :04:24. | :04:29.
and a little bit looking around and not knowing who to look to going | :04:29. | :04:35.
into Moscow. He seemed to bring a real cam, reassuring presence to | :04:35. | :04:42.
British athletics. Very different to Charles. But when we saw him in | :04:42. | :04:45.
Gothenberg, there was something which resonated with all of the | :04:45. | :04:54.
athletes. He did a fantastic job with the Paralympic team. The | :04:54. | :04:59.
Paralympic athletes knew him well, once the rest of the team got to | :04:59. | :05:03.
know him they realised, he is a very different character. Someone who is | :05:03. | :05:09.
very personable. It will be difficult at this stage to find a | :05:09. | :05:13.
quick replacement. I think they should wait, do not find a quick | :05:13. | :05:22.
replacement. Take a bit of time to find a new head coach. Thank you for | :05:22. | :05:29.
the moment. Steve, get on with your run, you are looking very fit. | :05:29. | :05:39.
:05:39. | :05:44. | ||
tragically lost their daughter last December. Mum Rebecca, tell us why | :05:44. | :05:50.
you set up the charity. We set up the charity to remember our darling | :05:50. | :05:55.
daughter. We want to make up their children smile like our daughter | :05:55. | :06:04.
did. We are here with 200 of our friends and family. Another 70 from | :06:04. | :06:08.
around the world are swimming and cycling to raise money in her name. | :06:08. | :06:13.
We will be looking out for these pink T-shirts everywhere. And you | :06:13. | :06:19.
have a picture of your daughter on your back. A beautiful little girl. | :06:19. | :06:25.
She really was. Her sister is here as well. We are going to keep | :06:25. | :06:31.
raising money and working hard, but we miss her terribly. What is your | :06:31. | :06:39.
target figure, and how much are you hoping to raise? 50,000 today, keep | :06:39. | :06:48.
them coming. We have raised 50,000 as of today and we are giving the | :06:48. | :06:51.
money to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital to support clown | :06:51. | :06:54.
doctors going around the wards distracting children when they are | :06:54. | :07:01.
having treatment. You have pink T-shirts here today but you have | :07:01. | :07:08.
people running all over the world. London, New York, Jerusalem and | :07:08. | :07:15.
South Africa. I hope you raise so much money for such a worthy cause. | :07:15. | :07:22.
Thank you so much for talking to us. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome | :07:22. | :07:27.
a player who survived a 17 day marathon at the Crucible to become | :07:27. | :07:33.
champion in 2005. How has he fared on the streets of Manchester | :07:33. | :07:43.
:07:43. | :07:51. | ||
competing in this epic ten K. It is tie, how do you feel? A bit of a | :07:51. | :07:58.
Muppet. I was going to wear the full snooker outfit, but my friends told | :07:58. | :08:05.
me that was not a good idea. Snooker players are perhaps not renowned for | :08:05. | :08:11.
their fitness, how was the run? was the first time I have ever done | :08:11. | :08:18.
anything like this, but I had to pull out because I injured my foot. | :08:18. | :08:23.
It will not be the last time I do something like this, I loved it. I | :08:23. | :08:29.
am doing it for the Royal man to children is charity, I am a patron | :08:29. | :08:34.
and it is a charity very close to my own heart. Through the season I | :08:34. | :08:38.
support them through a snigger prospective with 100 for every | :08:38. | :08:46.
century break that I make. We saw earlier that you had a banner, I | :08:46. | :08:53.
think we have it. The children made this for you. It is so nice. We | :08:53. | :08:57.
donated a snooker table to the play area. I went in and some of the | :08:57. | :09:02.
children had made me cards and this banner as well. This is what it is | :09:02. | :09:06.
all about. Are you hoping this will help your snooker, the fitness | :09:06. | :09:13.
element? Fitness has become more important, we are an eye up to 30 | :09:13. | :09:22.
events pro season. -- we are now up. The top players are also the | :09:22. | :09:27.
fittest, and I am probably the only one who lets the side down. | :09:27. | :09:30.
could take the Ronnie O'Sullivan route and just do one tournament a | :09:30. | :09:40.
:09:40. | :09:40. | ||
year. It works for him! Unbelievable what he did. To not compete for one | :09:40. | :09:43.
year, turn right and when the World Championships is a testament to how | :09:43. | :09:53.
:09:53. | :09:57. | ||
I can tell you the entries for next year's race have already been | :09:57. | :10:07.
:10:07. | :10:27. | ||
opened. There we are, there is the will know this person here at my | :10:27. | :10:34.
side. Now a friend of mine. Remind everyone of your story. Three years | :10:34. | :10:39.
ago today I should have been doing this run but I was waiting for a | :10:39. | :10:43.
liver transplant. On the day of the run I was going into theatre to have | :10:43. | :10:47.
my liver transplant because they rang me the night before to say a | :10:47. | :10:55.
liver had become available. Three years on, here I am, running a game. | :10:55. | :11:01.
You have done brilliantly there. are not used to this kind of | :11:01. | :11:09.
weather, but a brilliant day, really enjoyed it. It is a great spectacle. | :11:09. | :11:16.
How many strange sights have you seen out there? I saw two dies | :11:16. | :11:21.
wearing a full body outfit, I do not know how they are breathing. They | :11:21. | :11:27.
got overtook by a turtle. Spiderman ran past me. I am not brave enough | :11:27. | :11:35.
to do anything like that. You are as brave as they come. Talking about | :11:35. | :11:39.
fancy dress reminded me of a certain story about a vicar running in his | :11:39. | :11:49.
:11:49. | :12:06. | ||
running the great Manchester ten K run on behalf of of a waste says | :12:06. | :12:13.
Academy, I am also the chair of the Academy. As chair of the Academy | :12:13. | :12:17.
part of my responsibilities are wandering around the school, taking | :12:17. | :12:25.
assemblies. I love being in that school. He wants the best for all | :12:25. | :12:30.
our children. He goes around the classes, listens to children | :12:30. | :12:40.
:12:40. | :12:42. | ||
reading. They run up to him, hug him. The Times in 2004 said this was | :12:42. | :12:46.
the worst place in Britain to live, but lots of us who live here | :12:46. | :12:52.
disagree. We love living here, it is a great community, great community | :12:52. | :13:02.
:13:02. | :13:02. | ||
spirit. Lots of great people. I am running in my school clerical gear, | :13:02. | :13:09.
I am not one who is often seen in my clerical gear in this community. | :13:09. | :13:14.
Jeans and a sweatshirt is probably more appropriate in this community. | :13:14. | :13:17.
On Monday I was in school assembly showing the pupils what I was going | :13:17. | :13:22.
to be running in. Some of them are hoping for rain, some were hoping it | :13:23. | :13:29.
would be warm, am just hoping I would get back in one piece. I | :13:29. | :13:34.
really enjoy exercise because it helps me to keep fit and to sleep. | :13:34. | :13:39.
The more exercise you do, the more tired you are and it helps when you | :13:39. | :13:43.
go to bed. A number of children over the past few days have been | :13:43. | :13:48.
fundraising. Today was fitness Thursday when they came in in their | :13:48. | :13:54.
PE kits. They just tried to raise that profile of fitness in their | :13:54. | :14:03.
daily lives. We are going to use the money for some outdoor equipment for | :14:03. | :14:08.
our 3-5 -year-olds, this will enrich their time at this school and give | :14:08. | :14:14.
them a school, learning environment to work in. One of the reasons I am | :14:14. | :14:19.
doing the Great Manchester Run is to continue my weight loss. Three years | :14:19. | :14:24.
ago I was over 26 stone. At that point I really needed to do | :14:24. | :14:30.
something about it. Fortunately the medical treatment available I took, | :14:30. | :14:35.
which was a gastric bypass, and I continue to work on my weight loss | :14:35. | :14:43.
and my restriction of food. But also my exercise as well. On Sunday | :14:43. | :14:47.
morning I am leading morning prayer, and within that we have a | :14:47. | :14:55.
baptism of a young child. I will be doing that, doing my church service, | :14:55. | :14:59.
fulfilling the baptism requirements, welcoming this young life into the | :14:59. | :15:04.
Church of England. Then very quickly I will get change, have a car | :15:04. | :15:14.
:15:14. | :15:17. | ||
outside to transport me straight used to get hot just being in the | :15:17. | :15:22.
church, so goodness knows how he will feel running in the sunshine. | :15:22. | :15:26.
It was also very hot yesterday for the great City Games and I am joined | :15:26. | :15:36.
:15:36. | :15:37. | ||
by two of the stars. Before we look back to yesterday, Greg, we are next | :15:37. | :15:42.
to a sprinter. Your comments about beating sprinters, tell us about | :15:42. | :15:48.
that. The other day I said I wanted to try a couple of hundred metres | :15:48. | :15:55.
this year. I feel as if I could run a bit quicker. I got quoted saying I | :15:55. | :16:02.
would be the next best thing in sprinting which is not true at all. | :16:02. | :16:07.
I would not claim I can beat people like this. But I think there are a | :16:07. | :16:10.
few people out there who do Sprint who I think I might have a chance | :16:10. | :16:17.
against. There have been some great sprinter long jumps. Yes, there | :16:17. | :16:27.
:16:27. | :16:28. | ||
have. It can be done, and it has been done. Especially in the relay. | :16:28. | :16:34.
You have just got to be careful what you say. You won comfortably | :16:34. | :16:40.
yesterday, a bit disappointment that -- a bit disappointed you did not | :16:40. | :16:47.
get over eight metres? Yes. I was really keen to get over eight metres | :16:47. | :16:51.
and give the crowd something special. Altogether the competition | :16:51. | :16:57.
was great. By the time we got to the final round I was a little bit tired | :16:57. | :17:03.
because the rounds were so quick. It was a pretty good day out. I want to | :17:03. | :17:09.
jump eight metres every time, but it does not always happen like that. | :17:09. | :17:16.
Technically, how are you at the moment? Yesterday did not look too | :17:17. | :17:23.
hot to be totally honest. Changes take a long time, things have been a | :17:23. | :17:27.
bit disjointed for me this year already. We worked on a few things, | :17:27. | :17:34.
the problem is, going back in a full run in a competition situation you | :17:34. | :17:39.
want to perform as well as you can. Often you revert to how you used to | :17:39. | :17:48.
jump. I think over the coming year things will change more. Let's come | :17:48. | :17:56.
to your 100 metres Kim. You beat the young boys? Yes, you always want to | :17:56. | :18:00.
be dominant in the sprinting. Everybody wants to come and win | :18:00. | :18:05.
regardless of age. For me, it is great to be able to carry on. | :18:05. | :18:09.
your view now in terms of the rest of your career? Are you taking it a | :18:09. | :18:17.
race at a time a year at a time? have to take it one race and one | :18:17. | :18:27.
:18:27. | :18:27. | ||
year at a time. I really can't go to far. If I set a long-term goal it | :18:27. | :18:36.
will be Rio at 40, six Olympics and I really will have to call it a day. | :18:36. | :18:43.
You will be like merlin Otti. Keeping going and going. I'll look | :18:43. | :18:48.
at coaching. It is my time to go and coach. That's something I'm | :18:48. | :18:58.
:18:58. | :19:03. | ||
considering. Let's look at other events that caught the eye Merry is | :19:03. | :19:08.
one of the great athletes we have at the moment. She'll become one of the | :19:08. | :19:16.
best Hurd letters we've ever had. She is a dominant force. We could | :19:16. | :19:26.
:19:26. | :19:32. | ||
see good medals coming out of her. Next to her is Perri. It is not as | :19:32. | :19:37.
easy as her running and jumping over hurdles. Technically she has to get | :19:37. | :19:43.
it right her flat speed hats to be up there. She's run a sub-51. She's | :19:44. | :19:48.
getting there. Could be an ex-seating year for her. One of the | :19:48. | :19:53.
star names was Alison Felix. She won three gold medals in London. You're | :19:53. | :20:02.
a great admirer of her, Kim. She looks in great form? He her power to | :20:02. | :20:09.
force ratio is great. She is slim. But she has a lot more to come. | :20:09. | :20:14.
She's not dissimilar to you. She's very slight. You see some of the | :20:14. | :20:19.
sprinters very muscular. You two both generate incredible power | :20:19. | :20:27.
without the big mussels? Right. We are able to use our sprint much more | :20:27. | :20:31.
efficiently than those who are stronger. The stronger athletes, if | :20:31. | :20:36.
they use their power I don't know what happens. They are using half of | :20:36. | :20:40.
what they actually train with. does the rest of the season pan out | :20:40. | :20:46.
for you? I'm off to America on Monday. Then all building towards | :20:46. | :20:53.
the World Championships and hopefully come away with a title. | :20:53. | :20:57.
Rnlingts I'm off to home, then Senegal and some places after. I | :20:57. | :21:02.
have a tight schedule. No trials or championships to work to. I'm just | :21:02. | :21:06.
having fun. Great to see you here Kim and Greg as well. Good luck for | :21:06. | :21:16.
:21:16. | :21:17. | ||
the rest of the season. I am ear here with Andrew Starr. | :21:17. | :21:23.
Congratulations for the BAFTA last tango in Halifax? Thank you. Great | :21:23. | :21:27.
surprise. Great actors, brilliant production. Very happy. How was it | :21:27. | :21:33.
out there today? A bit warmer than we're used to in Manchester? A felt | :21:33. | :21:38.
out of place without it raining. It was very warm. Very different | :21:38. | :21:44.
running around the streets thorn going round in a Cortina in the | :21:44. | :21:48.
seventies. It was a fantastic turnout. People running for friends, | :21:48. | :21:52.
families and charities. reception you get from the crowd? | :21:52. | :21:59.
They are amazing. They took Life On Mars to their heart. We are really | :21:59. | :22:04.
received when we come back. You need to be dragging a bit and someone | :22:04. | :22:14.
shouts "come on Raymondo", and you're off again. There's a whole | :22:14. | :22:20.
gang here? Leukaemia and lymphoma do a great job as do all the charities. | :22:20. | :22:24.
The little bit of pain I had out there is next to nothings to the | :22:24. | :22:33.
guys fighting the disease. Sum it up, get on with it and stop moaning. | :22:33. | :22:37.
Congratulations on today. Thank you. I've been joined by some lovely | :22:37. | :22:44.
ladies. Joanna. Helen. Amanda.Who are you running for? The Multiple | :22:44. | :22:47.
Sclerosis Society. My husband was diagnose in the 1997 with multiple | :22:47. | :22:51.
sclerosis. They've been a wonderful support to us since. Are you from | :22:51. | :22:57.
Manchester? From Wil multiple sclerosis low in Chesire. | :22:57. | :23:02.
atmosphere today has been incredible? Wonderful. Amazing. I'm | :23:02. | :23:09.
not even nervous anymore. How's your preparation been? Trying since about | :23:09. | :23:16.
Christmas. Is this your first time here? First time doing 10K. I've | :23:16. | :23:26.
:23:26. | :23:26. | ||
done 5K in the past in Tatton. running in the name of my husband. | :23:26. | :23:30.
Died at the age of 24. Cancer Research. It has been a traumatic | :23:30. | :23:34.
time for you. But days like this where there are so many people with | :23:34. | :23:40.
so many stories, it gives you hope? It does. We'll beat it. Been lovely | :23:40. | :23:48.
to speak to you. Have a good one ladies. A lot of emotion out there | :23:48. | :23:55.
today for a lot of people. Working hard towards whatever causes. | :23:55. | :24:01.
Whether it is a challenge to complete the distance in a best | :24:01. | :24:05.
time. Been a lovely day to do that. Still they continue. They are | :24:05. | :24:10.
streaming across in front of us. Lots of good luck messages. So many | :24:10. | :24:14.
people trying to get close to the finish line to get a good view. Some | :24:14. | :24:24.

yet to still have their chance to complete their race for the day. | :24:25. | :24:29.
Loads of celebs been out there. Depends on your view. I'm told the | :24:29. | :24:35.
quickest one, the winner of the celeb race was Tony Ellis, former | :24:35. | :24:40.
professional footballer, ran just over 32 minutes. Very good. Very | :24:40. | :24:47.
good. They've done studies on David Beckham and found he runs about 10K | :24:47. | :24:52.
m during a match up and down the pitch. I suppose he has the basis of | :24:52. | :25:01.
some 10K training. 32 minutes is a decent time. There's still many down | :25:01. | :25:05.
there at the start. Many stories still to tell. Let's have another | :25:05. | :25:10.
quick word with Phil. If you were watching earlier in the show, you'll | :25:10. | :25:20.
have seen the story of Sam and swear Ruschelit Pledge a Pint. Blood, not | :25:20. | :25:24.
money, not alcohol. How was the race? Great. It was Sarah's first | :25:24. | :25:29.
race. Ask her. He was very kind to me. He said keep going, the crowd | :25:29. | :25:33.
was fantastic. I've always been the other side of the barrier. Sam's the | :25:33. | :25:36.
runner in my house. Great to be the right side of the barrier. Have you | :25:36. | :25:42.
got the bug now? Will you do it again? Halfway round she said maybe | :25:42. | :25:48.
we should find a nice half marathon to run. Sun's come out in Manchester | :25:48. | :25:53.
today! The cause you're running for, you must have a great sense of | :25:53. | :25:57.
satisfaction when you complete a race like this? We went out for a | :25:57. | :26:02.
loose run across the fields last night and shed a tear saying we are | :26:02. | :26:07.
very lucky I'm here. It is very emotional. Been a remarkable | :26:07. | :26:13.
fightback by you. Con greatlations. You completed it and many more. | :26:13. | :26:23.

Please pledge us a pint. Thank you very much. We saw some super elite | :26:23. | :26:26.
races earlier on. Tirunesh Dibaba ran away from the field. It was a | :26:26. | :26:31.
new course record. One of the top ten times of all time from the | :26:31. | :26:37.
Ethiopian super star. Then in the men's race, we'd hoped to see Haile | :26:37. | :26:43.
Gebrselassie take his fifth run but Moses Kipsiro from Uganda ran away | :26:43. | :26:46.
from Wilson Kipsang to take the men's race. We're coming near to the | :26:46. | :26:51.
end of our broadcast here in Manchester. But there's still a host | :26:51. | :26:56.
of sporting action on the BBC. Arsenal Ladies versus Bristol | :26:56. | :27:06.
:27:06. | :27:13. | ||
If you like your sport at a slower pace, there's golf from Wentworth. | :27:13. | :27:19.
The PGA championships. Highlights on BBC Two at 6.00pm. | :27:19. | :27:24.
The next athletics coverage is on the red button. Diamond League | :27:24. | :27:30.
action from Eugene. Mo Farah going in the 10,000 metres. Then the | :27:30. | :27:36.
Diamond League heads to Europe and Usain Bolt takes to the Italian | :27:36. | :27:40.
stage. We'll be live on BBC Three from 7.00pm. | :27:40. | :27:47.
A huge athletics season. We'll be hear to follow it all on the -- | :27:47. | :27:51.
