Hello and welcome to Newcastle. Once again, thousands have joined us here | :01:15. | :01:22.
for this year's Bupa Great North Run. Today, we will be hearing tales | :01:22. | :01:28.
of bravery, and millions of pounds will be raised for charity, and | :01:28. | :01:32.
there is also an elite race, with some of the sport's guest stars. | :01:32. | :01:37.
After double gold at the Moscow World Championships last month, Mo | :01:38. | :01:39.
Farah makes the move from track to World Championships last month, Mo | :01:39. | :01:44.
road today, leading one of the strongest fields ever. But he will | :01:44. | :01:48.
have to beat two all-time greats from Ethiopia, Haile Gebrselassie | :01:48. | :01:51.
and Kenenisa Bekele, the most from Ethiopia, Haile Gebrselassie | :01:51. | :01:55.
successful distance runner of modern times. And the women's race is | :01:55. | :02:02.
mouthwatering as well, with Tirunesh Dibaba fresh from gold in Moscow. | :02:02. | :02:10.
But she has to take on her Ethiopian team-mate, Defar. Who will come out | :02:10. | :02:13.
But she has to take on her Ethiopian on top? That elite race will take | :02:13. | :02:17.
place shortly. But as we know, the Great North Run is not just about | :02:18. | :02:20.
who can run the fastest half marathon come it is also about the | :02:20. | :02:24.
stories of these people, whose victory will not be judged against | :02:24. | :02:32.
the clock. Almost one year ago, we had a beautiful baby boy born at 30 | :02:32. | :02:38.
weeks, and sadly, he was stillborn, and it was the saddest day of my | :02:38. | :02:45.
life. We had great support from the SANDS charity. Every day in the UK, | :02:45. | :02:51.
17 babies and sadly do not make it. We are supporting mothers and | :02:51. | :02:55.
fathers who have lost their babies, and behind me, we have the other | :02:55. | :03:06.
runners! We are 17 altogether. Two more weeks until you get married, | :03:06. | :03:10.
but were you not due to be married already? Yes, we had it booked in | :03:10. | :03:15.
for yesterday, and we did not realise that we had entered a run at | :03:15. | :03:19.
the same time. When it came through, we did not know what to do. It would | :03:19. | :03:24.
the same time. When it came through, not have been a great thing to do | :03:24. | :03:29.
the day after our wedding day. . I am running for Shelter today, a | :03:29. | :03:32.
the day after our wedding day. . I charity I have supported a lot over | :03:32. | :03:35.
the years. There are so many charities here today, it is hard to | :03:35. | :03:38.
the years. There are so many pick who to run for. I am running | :03:38. | :03:49.
for Mencap, but everybody has got a cause that they want to support here | :03:49. | :03:53.
today. I am running for the special care unit at the hospital in | :03:53. | :03:59.
Newcastle. We see on a daily basis where all of the money which is | :03:59. | :04:04.
raised goes to. And obviously, a special day for you, running for | :04:04. | :04:09.
your dad. Yes, my mum will be watching, she will be in tears, but | :04:10. | :04:11.
your dad. Yes, my mum will be it is for my dad, it is a great | :04:11. | :04:17.
course. My dad had cancer, and we are running for that reason. It is | :04:17. | :04:20.
our first time running together. are used to dealing with the cold. | :04:20. | :04:48.
You are dressed as penguins, but what is this all about? It is | :04:48. | :04:57.
raising money for Yorkshire Cancer B. We are cycling back tomorrow. Are | :04:57. | :05:06.
you not going to be a bit tired? We have got some penguin beer laid on | :05:06. | :05:12.
for us when we get back home. A sense of achievement you get after | :05:12. | :05:14.
months of training, getting to the end, there is nothing like it. | :05:15. | :05:22.
Well, the masses are ready, the celebrities are ready, and we know | :05:23. | :05:26.
Mo Farah is ready. So, to guide you through today's event, we have our | :05:26. | :05:31.
commentary team of Paula Radcliffe, Brendan Foster, Paul Dickinson, and | :05:31. | :05:41.
of course, Steve Cram. And the Bupa Great North Run 2013 is | :05:41. | :05:48.
under way. Immediately, Cassidy, of Canada, and David Weir, of Great | :05:48. | :05:52.
Britain, locked together. David Weir will not take his eyes off the | :05:52. | :05:58.
wheelchair of Josh Cassidy. I can tell you, down at the seafront here, | :05:58. | :06:04.
in South Shields, despite the fact that the wind is blowing very | :06:04. | :06:06.
in South Shields, despite the fact strongly, the atmosphere, as always, | :06:06. | :06:17.
is absolutely wonderful. Certainly, David Weir has been a Paralympic | :06:17. | :06:20.
superstar for quite a few years now. It would be a desperate shame if he | :06:20. | :06:26.
did decide to retire before Rio. The whole world of Paralympic sport | :06:26. | :06:31.
would be eager to see him racing again, and just thinking back to | :06:31. | :06:37.
those moments in the stadium, the Paralympic Games, last year, every | :06:37. | :06:43.
time he went out onto the track, 80,000 people were cheering madly | :06:43. | :06:50.
for him. So, an early leader there are, but the two principals, Cassidy | :06:50. | :06:55.
and David Weir, just behind him, and we expect to see them coming onto | :06:55. | :06:59.
the seafront in South Shields, to go for the major medals. Could it be | :06:59. | :07:04.
David Weir for the fourth time, or maybe Josh Cassidy, also for the | :07:04. | :07:12.
fourth time? STEVE CRAM: Away they go, then, the | :07:12. | :07:18.
women's Great North Run under way in 2013, and what a race we have in | :07:18. | :07:25.
prospect. Yesterday, we had the Great City Games. The leader there, | :07:25. | :07:36.
looking at her watch. I think she has been asked to maybe see if she | :07:36. | :07:42.
might want to run a few early miles at a decent pace. Alongside me this | :07:42. | :07:45.
morning, Brendan Foster and Paula Radcliffe. Paula Radcliffe, a | :07:45. | :07:53.
mouthwatering race... Yes, a very good race in store, and a lot of | :07:53. | :08:00.
Ethiopian pride at stake, between Defar and Dibaba, but as you | :08:00. | :08:03.
mentioned, I think Jeptoo would like to get into the mix as well. I think | :08:03. | :08:09.
Dibaba wanted something around 31 minutes, through ten K, which would | :08:09. | :08:16.
put her below 66. So, Charlene Thomas looks as though she has gone | :08:16. | :08:21.
out at that pace. Nobody seems that keen to follow her at first, but | :08:21. | :08:24.
now, Dibaba is settling in behind her. Well, Dibaba has been asking if | :08:24. | :08:32.
anybody is going to help her run a her. Well, Dibaba has been asking if | :08:32. | :08:36.
fast time. We think this is a competitive race. Also, she will | :08:36. | :08:47.
find this place a little bit slow, because her normal pace is mile | :08:47. | :08:55.
pace. Also in that company at the moment is Prokopcuka. They go over | :08:55. | :09:00.
the iconic Tyne Bridge, past the stadium, and then the wind will | :09:00. | :09:05.
really be behind them after six miles, the fast section of the | :09:05. | :09:08.
course, entre John Reid Road, heading down eventually onto the | :09:08. | :09:13.
coast here at South Shields, where we're sitting, basically waiting for | :09:14. | :09:19.
them. It is a very firmly rooted these days. The first mile is often | :09:19. | :09:26.
a bit quicker now. The second mile can be a bit slower. And then the | :09:26. | :09:31.
third one picks up again. But interestingly, how many times have | :09:31. | :09:36.
we spoken about the idea of setting a pace on the track? Both Dibaba and | :09:36. | :09:44.
Defar do not always go with the pace, but certainly Dibaba, this | :09:44. | :09:47.
morning, looks like she is up for this. Dibaba and Prokopcuka | :09:47. | :09:53.
following her very closely. Charlene Thomas has been asked to at least | :09:53. | :09:57.
get this thing going quickly over the first couple of miles. It looks | :09:57. | :10:09.
as though David Weir is clear. They have been going for just over 14 | :10:09. | :10:13.
minutes, and no sign of Josh Cassidy. We are just trying to see | :10:13. | :10:19.
if we can see the group behind. Joss Cassidy, wearing a similar strip to | :10:19. | :10:24.
David Weir. David Weir certainly found that part of the course very | :10:24. | :10:28.
hard indeed, physically taxing, but now getting back into his stride, | :10:28. | :10:32.
having a little look behind to see where the chasing group is. And so | :10:32. | :10:34.
far, they are behind, if not more. There is the | :10:34. | :10:42.
leader in the women's, four times the champion on the Great North Run | :10:42. | :10:50.
in the past, Shelly Woods. And we understand that Josh Cassidy has | :10:50. | :10:54.
pulled out, the Canadian may well have a mechanical problem. Shelly | :10:54. | :10:57.
Woods leading the women's race at the moment. | :10:57. | :11:01.
STEVE CRAM: These three big names starting to pull away at the five | :11:01. | :11:04.
STEVE CRAM: These three big names kilometre point. 16.22 was the | :11:05. | :11:10.
official time at five kilometres, which is a pretty steady pace. You | :11:10. | :11:14.
would issue and they will pick up from that, though, it is not | :11:14. | :11:18.
superfast, not the kind of pace which had been rumoured that Dibaba | :11:18. | :11:24.
was looking for. She wanted 31 minutes through ten kilometres, | :11:24. | :11:27.
theoretically, but they are not going at that kind of pace. | :11:27. | :11:34.
PAULA RADCLIFFE: I think of that kind of pace in the early stages, | :11:34. | :11:39.
without any doubt, we are going to see this race picked up in the | :11:39. | :11:42.
second half, in the last couple of miles. That is where we will see the | :11:42. | :11:52.
faster miles. Usually six and seven, or seven and eight, are slightly | :11:52. | :11:53.
downhill and very fast, and then the or seven and eight, are slightly | :11:53. | :11:59.
last mile along the seafront, if the wind stays in their favour, that | :11:59. | :12:05.
should also be very fast. Back at the start, all the excite and | :12:05. | :12:09.
building, and of course it should be. This is the most outstanding | :12:09. | :12:14.
line-up of talent that we have seen for a long time. -- all the | :12:14. | :12:19.
excitement. Kenenisa Bekele, it has not been a great year for him so | :12:19. | :12:23.
far, but he might be looking to get one over on the old master here, | :12:23. | :12:28.
Haile Gebrselassie. A new generation, but they are still going | :12:28. | :12:31.
to have to work hard to beat the old man. And is this the start of a | :12:31. | :12:38.
to have to work hard to beat the old whole new sector of Mo Farah's | :12:38. | :12:44.
career? A huge welcome onto the start line for the first time in the | :12:44. | :12:47.
Great North Run. Christine O'Hara go and Graeme Swann | :12:47. | :13:16.
in the starting box there. STEVE CRAM: Every single year, tens | :13:16. | :13:22.
of thousands of people come, some from just around the corner, some | :13:22. | :13:26.
from far-away. Local athletics clubs are well represented. But now they | :13:26. | :13:32.
come from all over the UK, Europe and the world, to take part. It is | :13:32. | :13:36.
perhaps the world 's greatest half marathon. We have had warmer days, | :13:36. | :13:43.
sunnier days, but that does not matter when you are taking part. The | :13:43. | :13:48.
weather is always a bit of a sideshow. The challenge ahead is | :13:48. | :13:53.
what brings people to this, and the atmosphere and the sense of | :13:53. | :13:57.
achievement, which they will all have, the vast majority of them, | :13:57. | :14:02.
when they get to the other end, in an hour, two hours, three hours, who | :14:02. | :14:09.
knows? So, 400 metres to go for David Weir, to become our first | :14:09. | :14:15.
winner this year. Very disappointing that we lost Josh Cassidy very, very | :14:15. | :14:22.
early. Both former champions, of course. Mechanical problems for the | :14:22. | :14:28.
Canadian. But no doubt about the winner here. Four times the | :14:28. | :14:31.
Paralympic champion in London last year. David Weir, such a tough | :14:31. | :14:42.
competitor. Interesting to hear him sounding very cagey about his | :14:42. | :14:45.
prospects of competing in Rio in three years' time. I am sure he | :14:45. | :14:52.
will, I hope he will. But no doubt about the fact that he has won on | :14:52. | :14:57.
Tyneside once again. Four times the winner of the Great North Run now, | :14:57. | :15:03.
David Weir. It really is warming up in this women's race. They have just | :15:03. | :15:08.
run a 4.42 mile for the seventh mile, may be one of the quickest | :15:08. | :15:12.
ever miles in the women's Great North Run. And they are not letting | :15:12. | :15:25.
up, either. Meanwhile, back with the men, the Gateshead Stadium looking | :15:25. | :15:29.
resplendent. We had the European Team Championships there this year. | :15:29. | :15:35.
And what a sprint finish we had, didn't we, Brendan? It was the most | :15:35. | :15:45.
amazing last lap I have seen, 50.89 for Mo Farah, the man before him | :15:45. | :15:49.
used to starters with his last lap, Kenenisa Bekele, and the man for him | :15:49. | :15:54.
who used to startle us with hybrid Gabreselassie. These three athletes | :15:54. | :15:58.
running through Gateshead Stadium, it warms my heart, it is fantastic | :15:58. | :16:03.
to see -- Haile Gebrselassie. Three of the greatest. Mo is on his way | :16:03. | :16:07.
into the record books, the questions Amir Khan Kenenisa Bekele do on the | :16:07. | :16:13.
roads what he has done on the track. We are operating well and 67 minute | :16:13. | :16:19.
pace, heading into below 66s. Jeptoo has put her foot down and this is | :16:19. | :16:24.
the first significant change. Meseret Defar trying to hang on but | :16:24. | :16:30.
Dibaba struggling. Daylight opening, more than Dibaba would want. Meseret | :16:30. | :16:37.
Defar looking back as if to check where she is because she would have | :16:37. | :16:39.
expected her to be covering it and now she is moving up much closer to | :16:39. | :16:44.
make sure that Jeptoo knows you have not got rid of me yet. Meseret Defar | :16:44. | :16:50.
was almost acting as a bridge to Jeptoo there, looked around, that | :16:50. | :16:52.
something, realised her team-mate Jeptoo there, looked around, that | :16:52. | :16:55.
was struggling and suddenly closed the gap on Jeptoo. She was almost | :16:55. | :16:58.
trying to drag Dibaba with her, wasn't she? It is a downhill section | :16:59. | :17:03.
but look at her, she is waving, saying, come on, come on, this is | :17:03. | :17:07.
where it is happening, you have got to be here. That is interesting, she | :17:07. | :17:12.
did exactly that, but Priscah Jeptoo, a very experienced | :17:12. | :17:14.
international fleet come you don't Jeptoo, a very experienced | :17:14. | :17:28.
win the London asthma -- you don't win the London Marathon by accident, | :17:28. | :17:30.
she decided she would not let Meseret Defar dominate this one and | :17:30. | :17:31.
for the first time in a long time we Meseret Defar dominate this one and | :17:32. | :17:34.
are seeing Dibaba come under pressure. She won it convincingly | :17:34. | :17:35.
are seeing Dibaba come under last time and Priscah Jeptoo, you | :17:36. | :17:39.
know the intent here. She wants to try to win it from this far out. She | :17:39. | :17:43.
wants to try to break Meseret Defar, who recently beat Tirunesh | :17:43. | :17:50.
Dibaba at 5000 metres. A world champion at 5000 metres, the Olympic | :17:50. | :17:53.
champion at 5000 metres and she is coming under pressure now. You | :17:53. | :17:57.
talked about 5000 metres and they have just run 15.03 for the last | :17:58. | :18:03.
five K, my bit of an undulating part of the course. I can't remember how | :18:03. | :18:09.
many women in the world this year ran under 15 minutes, the qualifying | :18:09. | :18:14.
time was 15.18 to get to the World Championships, so that gives you an | :18:14. | :18:17.
indication of how fast they are going, that is quick, that section. | :18:17. | :18:21.
It is, downhill with the wind behind you but it is very fast. They have | :18:21. | :18:26.
had that pull as well pretty much most of the ninth mile, gradually | :18:26. | :18:28.
had that pull as well pretty much uphill and usually that is one of | :18:28. | :18:32.
the slower miles and they still come about in 5.09. It is doing damage | :18:32. | :18:36.
and is starting to do damage to Meseret Defar as well. The gaps are | :18:36. | :18:41.
opening up and she takes the shorter tangent around the roundabout and | :18:41. | :18:45.
close it a bit but Jeptoo is definitely turning the screw here | :18:45. | :18:48.
and it is going to start doing major damage. She is trying to win it from | :18:48. | :18:54.
here, from a long way out and Meseret Defar is under pressure but | :18:54. | :18:58.
still has the composure to nip through on the inside around the | :18:58. | :19:01.
roundabout, mentally she is in good shape. This is a real brave attempts | :19:01. | :19:07.
by Priscah Jeptoo to take on two of the greatest and try and beat them. | :19:07. | :19:10.
As we say that, three of the greatest in the men's race. Well, it | :19:10. | :19:14.
is breaking may be helping them. The Red Arrows, | :19:14. | :19:43.
we were hoping we could see them at the start but the weather conditions | :19:43. | :19:46.
were not conducive, but great to see them flying over the Tyne Bridge. | :19:46. | :19:58.
Impressive, as ever. As precise as ever. The Red Arrows as much a | :19:58. | :20:11.
fixture of the Great North Run as the sight of thousands of people | :20:11. | :20:13.
crossing the Tyne Bridge. Right on cue, Shelly Woods it is who | :20:13. | :20:24.
wins the women's wheelchair race yet again. Five times the winner of this | :20:24. | :20:37.
race to. -- of this race now. Bekele has a little behind, he is aware of | :20:37. | :20:40.
what is going on in front of him because these two are beginning to | :20:40. | :20:45.
pull away. A bit of pressure applied by Haile Gebrselassie. Mo looks | :20:45. | :20:49.
incredibly comfortable at the moment and is wondering whether Bekele, | :20:49. | :20:52.
that is the last he will see of him, I suspect it might be. Haile | :20:52. | :20:57.
that is the last he will see of him, Gebrselassie looked over his | :20:57. | :21:00.
shoulder, a confident look. Right next to him, Mo Farah is there | :21:00. | :21:04.
without a problem but can allude to Bekele, those yards opening, he is | :21:04. | :21:08.
trying to stick to it but if he doesn't close the gap pretty quickly | :21:08. | :21:12.
I think we are going to see the race down to two men. The great one and | :21:12. | :21:23.
our great one, Mo Farah. Just to recap, the ten smile, 4.34 for | :21:23. | :21:29.
Jeptoo. What we haven't got is the 11th mile but what is evidenced is | :21:29. | :21:35.
that she is not slowing down. Meseret Defar just cresting the hill | :21:35. | :21:37.
that she is not slowing down. where. Maybe the gap hasn't | :21:37. | :21:41.
increased too much but this is relentless from Jeptoo. She put the | :21:41. | :21:44.
pressure on the right time and I have been handed from the | :21:44. | :21:49.
statistician, the 11 smile was covered in 4.55 as well. Not uneasy | :21:49. | :21:54.
mile as well so not slowing down and Paula's course record. Macro Getting | :21:54. | :21:59.
nervous here! I think she will be just outside it but she is on her | :21:59. | :22:06.
own and the breeze may be across the athletes rather than behind their | :22:06. | :22:09.
backs. Meseret Defar is not giving up, still moving pretty well. Jeptoo | :22:09. | :22:15.
is a good 100 metres or so ahead and looking pretty strong. Once she | :22:15. | :22:21.
makes the drop on the sea should front she will send the finish is | :22:21. | :22:25.
not too far away and as long as she hasn't overcooked it, she should be | :22:25. | :22:28.
OK. There is the gap, maybe 70 or 80 metres. Meanwhile, a great race in | :22:28. | :22:34.
the women's is being followed by a metres. Meanwhile, a great race in | :22:34. | :22:38.
great race and the men's. We are talking about Kenenisa Bekele, when | :22:38. | :22:40.
he looks as though he is struggling talking about Kenenisa Bekele, when | :22:40. | :22:43.
a little bit, you can never quite tell, all of a sudden he can turn it | :22:43. | :22:46.
a little bit, you can never quite around again and he is back in the | :22:46. | :22:54.
race. The three of them back -- battle up together and most | :22:54. | :22:56.
significantly, Mo has taken his hat off! The women are on the seafront | :22:56. | :23:01.
and the crowds here are getting excited about this. Paul is getting | :23:01. | :23:09.
nervous because the course record is 65 minutes and 40 seconds, set in | :23:09. | :23:15.
2003. The only person who to have won the London Marathon and then the | :23:15. | :23:18.
Great North Run in the same year, was that year in 2003, was Paula | :23:18. | :23:23.
Radcliffe and Jeptoo attempting to to do the same. She has won the | :23:23. | :23:27.
London Marathon and she is looking strong, pushing on. Yes, she is | :23:27. | :23:32.
looking strong. 800 metres to go there, through the 12th mile in 4.54 | :23:32. | :23:38.
which is under the place that I ran in 2003. She is pushing on all the | :23:38. | :23:42.
time and she can finish now, blowing hard back-up the road here. The wind | :23:42. | :23:48.
is coming across and I think she is getting plenty of shelter from the | :23:48. | :23:50.
is coming across and I think she is strength and depth of the crowd | :23:50. | :23:54.
because despite the weather and chilly temperatures a lot of people | :23:54. | :24:00.
are supporting the finishers. This is one of those races where we can | :24:00. | :24:03.
sit and predict anything but all we have to do is wait and watch because | :24:03. | :24:07.
you cannot tell what is going to happen here. Is Mo going to go | :24:07. | :24:12.
early? Will Haile Gebrselassie continue to apply the pressure? Is | :24:12. | :24:15.
Kenenisa Bekele coming under pressure? You can't answer any of | :24:15. | :24:20.
those questions. Priscah Jeptoo, Meseret Defar on the way for a | :24:20. | :24:25.
those questions. Priscah Jeptoo, personal best but there is Priscah | :24:25. | :24:27.
Jeptoo. Paul is looking anxiously at the sign which says 400 metres to | :24:28. | :24:33.
go, 64 minutes. She is not going to run 60 seconds for the last 400 | :24:33. | :24:38.
metres, I am pretty sure. There is the great Meseret Defar running the | :24:38. | :24:41.
fastest she has ever run and finding an athlete so much better than her | :24:41. | :24:46.
today. Priscah Jeptoo looks a little tired with 400 metres to go and you | :24:46. | :24:52.
never know. The time is 65.40, the course record, it is going to be | :24:52. | :24:56.
incredibly tight here. I suspect she might just miss it. A little smile | :24:56. | :25:01.
across Paula Radcliffe's face here! The quickest half marathon in the | :25:01. | :25:05.
world this year was Lucy, when she beat Priscah Jeptoo in the race | :25:05. | :25:11.
earlier in the year at the beginning of the year, when there was just two | :25:11. | :25:17.
seconds separating them. Jeptoo run 66.111 that occasion. But the | :25:17. | :25:22.
victory today looks assured. Even though she is a little tired with | :25:22. | :25:26.
200 metres to go, Meseret Defar is too far back. Cheered on by these | :25:26. | :25:36.
big crowds at the finish. Our Armed Forces on display and giving her a | :25:36. | :25:41.
great welcome as she has about 100 metres to go now. That record | :25:41. | :25:45.
disappearing. She is looking up at the clock, she can see it herself. | :25:45. | :25:49.
It is going to be very close. It is going to be a great win, London | :25:49. | :25:54.
Marathon earlier in the year and now the Great North Run. Priscah Jeptoo | :25:54. | :25:57.
of Kenya takes the title, the fastest in the world this year | :25:57. | :26:03.
outside the course record. A brilliant run, really strong running | :26:03. | :26:06.
in the middle of the race, pushed on hard. She put some hard miles in, | :26:06. | :26:11.
broke Dibaba first and then broke Meseret Defar but Meseret Defar has | :26:11. | :26:18.
done incredibly well. The Ethiopian record, 67.03, that will be smashed | :26:18. | :26:25.
by Meseret Defar. Cramp right at the end, she will be OK and when she | :26:25. | :26:29.
sees the time that is a good indication of her potential. Really | :26:29. | :26:34.
it has been Meseret Defar over this last year or two who has got the | :26:34. | :26:38.
better off Dibaba on the track and again doing it on the road. Paula, | :26:38. | :26:43.
that is still a very fast run, under 67 minutes for Dibaba as well. What | :26:43. | :26:47.
are run by Jeptoo and a solid, really good I think showing from | :26:47. | :26:53.
Meseret Defar in second place. Indefinitely. Dibaba will be the one | :26:53. | :26:58.
who will be the one who will go Indefinitely. Dibaba will be the one | :26:58. | :27:01.
concerned, thinking about moving to the marathon. The masses are | :27:01. | :27:08.
covering the Tyne Bridge, various charities, fundraising, athletes | :27:08. | :27:11.
running for their own personal best times. Thousands of them there. It | :27:11. | :27:19.
is raining quite heavily there. The wind has been pretty incessant | :27:19. | :27:23.
through the whole morning, of course, but it has been to be fair | :27:23. | :27:32.
not enough faces too much. Look how hard Mo is working, there is an | :27:32. | :27:37.
uphill section. There is the Lizard lane roundabout, steep downhill, we | :27:37. | :27:40.
have talked about that, is that an opportunity for somebody to make the | :27:40. | :27:42.
have talked about that, is that an first break? After that downhill it | :27:42. | :27:46.
is a sharp left and then we are on the seafront, then the long run to | :27:47. | :27:49.
the finish where the crowds are watching this on the big screen. All | :27:49. | :27:54.
the umbrellas are up and they are anticipating a big finish here. Will | :27:54. | :27:59.
Mo Farah leave it until the end? Will he just wait for the kick? | :27:59. | :28:03.
Wilbur Kelly try to take this away from Gabreselassie as he -- has he | :28:03. | :28:09.
got a push in the last mile or so? Can Haile Gebrselassie when the | :28:09. | :28:13.
finish out of the two younger men? Town this steep section, Haile | :28:13. | :28:18.
Gebrselassie looking for room. Mo Farah does not want to go to hard | :28:18. | :28:23.
down here, I hate downhill running, it is tough. He's trying to take my | :28:23. | :28:27.
advice, I said don't hammer down this hill because it is a very steep | :28:27. | :28:31.
drop and the temptation is to try and get a gap and run hard down | :28:31. | :28:37.
there but that does do damage and make it very difficult to pick up in | :28:37. | :28:41.
the section here. Bekele has used the downhill and you can see Haile | :28:41. | :28:45.
Gebrselassie putting his arms to his side and letting his body almost | :28:45. | :28:49.
float down, which is the right way to do it but Bekele has managed to | :28:49. | :28:53.
get a bit of a gap and Haile Gebrselassie getting across to the | :28:53. | :28:55.
other side of the road, I don't know if that is to gain more | :28:55. | :29:08.
other side of the road, I don't know attempt to win this race. Kenenisa | :29:08. | :29:13.
Bekele used the downhill section, Mo lost ten or 15 metres and now the | :29:13. | :29:16.
pressure that was on Mo Farah is being applied to a much greater | :29:16. | :29:21.
extent. That effort he is having to put in to get back to Bekele will | :29:21. | :29:28.
take a bit away of his sting in his spring finish. Is he making any | :29:28. | :29:31.
ground on Bekele? The gap might be getting bigger. The greatest | :29:31. | :29:35.
cross-country runner of all time used is technique from cross-country | :29:35. | :29:39.
running, up and down is the technique, he ran down that hill | :29:39. | :29:42.
magnificently. He accelerated down the hill. Mo held back a little and | :29:42. | :29:48.
he has stolen the gap now. Here comes Mo Farah, working hard, | :29:48. | :29:52.
attacking. The only thing we knew about this finishing run was that | :29:52. | :29:56.
Haile Gebrselassie was going to come under a bit of pressure in the | :29:56. | :30:00.
finishing run. I did say to Kenenisa Bekele, he said, don't worry, I am | :30:00. | :30:04.
fit and ready because everybody was doubting his ability. Here comes Mo | :30:04. | :30:08.
Farah now, working at it, digging deep. The one thing about Mo Farah | :30:08. | :30:13.
that you know is he will always give 100%. He is, in his own terms, a | :30:13. | :30:18.
grafter, but he is running against a man who has come back to form and he | :30:18. | :30:24.
has done that before. We have seen him be disappointing for a while and | :30:24. | :30:26.
come back to form. In the middle of him be disappointing for a while and | :30:26. | :30:29.
this race you would not have given tuppence for his chances and here we | :30:29. | :30:32.
are now, Kenenisa Bekele testing Mo Farah. Mo Farah is fighting really, | :30:32. | :30:43.
really hard. I thought he was working hard couple of miles back, | :30:43. | :30:46.
you could tell from his facial expression. This is Mo Farah under | :30:46. | :30:49.
real pressure, gritting his teeth, trying to find something, because | :30:49. | :30:55.
Bekele is not letting up. That gap if anything is getting bigger. It is | :30:55. | :31:01.
about five seconds. Bekele strong, confident and quick. Unless Mo can | :31:01. | :31:05.
turn around them are meant, which is going towards Bekele, he is going to | :31:05. | :31:10.
run out of time, space and speed. Well, the greatest cross-country | :31:10. | :31:15.
runner of all time, the great track man of many years ago, the world | :31:15. | :31:17.
record-holder for 5000 metres and man of many years ago, the world | :31:17. | :31:22.
10,000 metres, on this performance, is telling everybody, I am going to | :31:22. | :31:27.
be as good on the roads as I have been on the track. He wants to be, | :31:27. | :31:31.
he has built his own running track so that he can get his training | :31:31. | :31:36.
done, and Mo Farah is on his way. PAULA RADCLIFFE: Mo Farah will be | :31:36. | :31:39.
getting great support on this closing straight, and he needs to | :31:39. | :31:40.
keep focused on Kenenisa Bekele. He closing straight, and he needs to | :31:40. | :31:46.
keeps looking over his shoulder. We do not know what that indicates | :31:46. | :31:54.
exactly. I do not think that gap is closing. But all of a sudden, a | :31:54. | :31:58.
different cadence from Mo Farah, is this over, is he changing gear? | :31:58. | :32:03.
Kenenisa Bekele does not have the pace he used to have, but is there | :32:03. | :32:07.
enough room, enough distance, for Mo Farah to close this gap? | :32:08. | :32:13.
BRENDAN FOSTER: It is a last effort from Mo Farah. Can he do on the road | :32:13. | :32:18.
what he has done on the track? Bekele is saying, do not write me | :32:18. | :32:22.
off. 400 metres to go, here comes Mo Farah. He is running like we have | :32:22. | :32:25.
off. 400 metres to go, here comes Mo seen him run all season. He is | :32:25. | :32:29.
heading for Kenenisa Bekele, and Bekele knows he is coming. Has he | :32:29. | :32:36.
left it too late? 300 metres to go, Bekele behind again, but Mo Farah | :32:36. | :32:39.
has made a huge effort to try to get back to him, and the crowd know it. | :32:39. | :32:44.
They are cheering him on, they have seen him do it on the track. Can he | :32:44. | :32:48.
do it on the roads here? 200 metres to go. Look V leading, Mo Farah on | :32:48. | :32:55.
the charge. A great battle between two great champions. Bekele it in | :32:55. | :32:57.
his teeth, but Mo Farah is coming! two great champions. Bekele it in | :32:57. | :33:02.
It is relentless. He wants to win this. He is digging deep. Bekele | :33:02. | :33:06.
spells again, but Mo Farah, fighting hard. The two of them, almost | :33:06. | :33:12.
side-by-side. He has got to make one more effort to try and get there, | :33:12. | :33:18.
but Bekele is go to hold him off. A great race, a great win for a great | :33:18. | :33:26.
champion. The Great North Run goes to Bekele. Mo Farah has to settle | :33:26. | :33:29.
for second place, in one of the greatest finishes we have ever seen | :33:29. | :33:35.
in this race. Just for a moment, it looked as though he might do it. | :33:35. | :33:39.
Just for a little while, it looked as though his track speed might pay | :33:39. | :33:47.
off. And the two younger men pulled away in the latter stages from | :33:47. | :33:51.
perhaps the greatest of all time, Haile Gebrselassie. He might not | :33:51. | :33:56.
know who won this... Well, now he does. Just as a bit of a | :33:56. | :34:02.
consolation, I am told that is a world record for over 40-year-olds | :34:02. | :34:11.
in a half marathon. So, just outside 60 minutes for Bekele. That is well | :34:12. | :34:14.
outside his personal best, of course. Johnny Miller heading up the | :34:14. | :34:29.
next group of British athletes. Many congratulations on a great win cash | :34:29. | :34:33.
how confident were you that you could run like this? I was | :34:33. | :34:41.
concentrating hard and training hard and feeling confident. My injury has | :34:41. | :34:47.
been getting better and better, and and feeling confident. My injury has | :34:47. | :34:53.
in the end, I did it. It was a great race I thought, when he went, with | :34:53. | :34:58.
one mile to go, I thought the pace was just ridiculous. I thought I | :34:58. | :35:01.
could come back and close the gap slowly. I managed to close it a | :35:01. | :35:04.
little bit, but you cannot take away what he has. He has great speed. It | :35:05. | :35:09.
came down to the line. It was a great race, and Haile did most of | :35:09. | :35:17.
the work, and kept pushing. You young boys, with the 40-year-old in | :35:17. | :35:22.
the middle, and then you kick away from him after he has done all of | :35:22. | :35:23.
the middle, and then you kick away the work? ! It was the only chance I | :35:23. | :35:29.
had today, to push from the beginning, but it was wonderful. Of | :35:29. | :35:33.
course what you got, which neither of these two got, was a world | :35:33. | :35:41.
record. At least it is something! And Mo, in terms of your | :35:41. | :35:45.
preparations for London, how much did this teach you today? A lot, | :35:45. | :35:51.
because the World Championships was my main focus. I only had two or | :35:51. | :35:56.
three weeks preparing for this race, but at the same time, I am | :35:56. | :36:00.
disappointed to finish second. But I did not just finish second, I | :36:00. | :36:04.
finished second to a great athlete. This is what it is all about. I will | :36:04. | :36:08.
go on holiday and get ready for the London Marathon. Jeptoo, beating | :36:08. | :36:22.
Messer wreck Defar, who got a new Ethiopian record, in second place. | :36:22. | :36:31.
Jeptoo, of Kenny, many congratulations, your first time | :36:31. | :36:35.
doing the Great North Run and a very strong, fast victory? Today, I am | :36:35. | :36:41.
very happy. It is an amazing day for me, because I did not know that I | :36:41. | :36:47.
would run such an amazing time. And there is the result, David Wear, a | :36:47. | :36:55.
couple of minutes outside his own course record, which he set back in | :36:55. | :37:11.
2009. Shelly Woods leading the all British top trio in the women's | :37:11. | :37:12.
race. 2009. Shelly Woods leading the all | :37:12. | :37:15.
British top trio David, just past finish line, we know the conditions | :37:15. | :37:19.
were tough, but was that as easy as it looked for you today? Not really. | :37:19. | :37:24.
It was a good test to see where I am at at the moment. I surprised | :37:24. | :37:28.
myself, as I have only been back pushing for a couple of weeks, so I | :37:28. | :37:32.
am very happy with that sort of time. It was tough, some parts were | :37:32. | :37:36.
tough, with the wind. But there was a lot of bits which helped you a | :37:36. | :37:41.
lot. I was thankful the rain held off, because the roads were greasy, | :37:41. | :37:46.
so we had to take it carefully on the first downhill, making sure the | :37:46. | :37:49.
tyres were ready for the greasy roads. Shelly Woods, victory number | :37:49. | :37:54.
five here in the north-east, so how does it compare? It is very foreign | :37:54. | :37:59.
in, I am very happy. It was a tough day. I found it difficult. So, I | :37:59. | :38:09.
just kept chasing the guys. There was not much international | :38:09. | :38:11.
competition here this weekend, but the guys gave me enough competition | :38:11. | :38:16.
to just try and chase them and go for a good time. You say a good | :38:17. | :38:23.
time, you had the course record previously, it has been taken off | :38:23. | :38:27.
you and you really wanted back, so I think we will see you a couple more | :38:27. | :38:31.
times at least here. Most definitely, I would love to go under | :38:31. | :38:36.
50 minutes on this course. My best ever is just seven seconds over | :38:36. | :38:40.
that. The one year I took a break from this race, the American girl | :38:40. | :38:45.
came over and smashed it. So, one year I will come back and I really | :38:45. | :38:50.
think I can do that. A good day, with some good conditions, it will | :38:50. | :38:53.
be within my reach. What a race between Mo Farah and Bekele, an | :38:53. | :38:59.
incredible finish, very tight. But I am sure Mo will | :38:59. | :39:06.
year's London Marathon. Now, it will be time for him to get a little bit | :39:06. | :39:14.
of rest, unlike the other runners, who are still out on the course. | :39:14. | :39:29.
I am running for the Meningitis Trust, and I am also competing | :39:29. | :39:40.
against my brother-in-law. I had better let you go! Good luck! | :39:40. | :40:01.
We thought we would get dressed up as toy soldiers. Every year, Wendy | :40:01. | :40:09.
does our outfits. This is our third year doing it, and it is the best | :40:09. | :40:13.
fun, a little bit hard work, but apart from that! | :40:13. | :40:27.
Whoever the woman was at about mile 11th who had the sausage rolls, I | :40:27. | :40:33.
Whoever the woman was at about mile know it is not exact to Mo Farah | :40:33. | :40:37.
stuff, but it did it for me, I have to say. | :40:37. | :40:48.
Hoping for a good time? Oh, sorry, you mean running time? I did not | :40:48. | :41:00.
know what you were offering me then! | :41:00. | :41:21.
It is good, except I fell on Thursday and I hurt my ribs, so I | :41:22. | :41:28.
have to stop to breathe! Never done it before, so would you | :41:28. | :42:10.
come back? Absolutely, definitely. I will have a couple of drinks tonight | :42:10. | :42:13.
with you and Thomas, and life does not get better than that! | :42:13. | :42:35.
I looked up and I saw five miles, and I thought it was only three | :42:35. | :42:45.
miles. Where are we now? Halfway! OK, I had better get going. | :42:45. | :43:29.
I just wanted to cry when I crossed the finishing line. I rang with my | :43:29. | :43:34.
