Today 40,000 people will be running 10,000 metres right in the Miller of | :00:08. | :00:15.
Manchester. A city I have known and loved since I was a little girl. | :00:16. | :00:22.
Home to the Premier League champions! And of course, another | :00:23. | :00:27.
brilliant football team. This great brand of brothers will be motivated | :00:28. | :00:32.
by the rent personal stories, mothers, dads, sons, daughters, | :00:33. | :00:40.
auntie 's. For good causes, for bets, for a dare, to gain | :00:41. | :00:45.
confidence, to lose weight, to help a friend. Today 40,000 people take | :00:46. | :00:51.
part in the great Manchester run. One of them will be me! | :00:52. | :01:07.
Welcome to highlights of the 12th Great Manchester Run. A race which | :01:08. | :01:17.
as raised ?22,000 for charity -- ?22 million for charity. The men's race | :01:18. | :01:28.
stars Kenenisa Bekele against the London Marathon winner Wilson | :01:29. | :01:30.
Kipsang, while Tirunesh Dibaba headlines the women's race. Denise | :01:31. | :01:37.
Welch has got her money the Mac running shoes on to raise money. -- | :01:38. | :01:47.
has got her running shoes on. Paddington Bear will be running the | :01:48. | :01:58.
course. Combined age, 168, this husband and wife team show that age | :01:59. | :02:04.
is no barrier. We will bring you all the sights and sounds of this | :02:05. | :02:09.
wonderful celebration of running, where the strength of the human | :02:10. | :02:16.
spirit shines through. Yes, a lot to look forward to today. Denise Lewis | :02:17. | :02:22.
and Phil Jones will be out on the course, as well as George Reilly, | :02:23. | :02:26.
donning his running shoes. Let's start with Denise Lewis, out and | :02:27. | :02:31.
about with some runners. I have with me, and very brave and courageous | :02:32. | :02:35.
lady, Rebecca Wiley. Can you tell us about your story? I was diagnosed | :02:36. | :02:41.
with a rare form of cervical cancer last year, undergoing some surgery, | :02:42. | :02:48.
having chemotherapy and radio sets -- radiotherapy. I got the all clear | :02:49. | :02:56.
last year. Just reading through your information, you actually wanted to | :02:57. | :03:00.
be fitter than you have ever been before. That was your inspiration? I | :03:01. | :03:05.
was very unfit before I got ill, when you go through something like | :03:06. | :03:10.
that, you have to take life by the horns, the aim is to be fitter than | :03:11. | :03:15.
I was before, I am not there yet, but I'm doing a ten K, and that is a | :03:16. | :03:22.
start. You look very fit, congratulations, enjoy the day. | :03:23. | :03:29.
start. You look very fit, Humphrey the Bear has been training | :03:30. | :03:32.
hard, he had a session with the former England and Manchester United | :03:33. | :03:36.
footballer, Phil Neville, running today for a children's hospital. One | :03:37. | :03:42.
of many familiar faces, one that all Manchester United fans know well, | :03:43. | :03:48.
Phil Neville. Still seems odd to read as an ex-footballer, | :03:49. | :03:53.
ex-Everton, and Manchester United. -- to refer to you. I wanted to do | :03:54. | :04:01.
more of this since I retired. I did one four years ago, I really enjoyed | :04:02. | :04:05.
it, but they are usually during the season. Having fun, raising money | :04:06. | :04:11.
along the way. You are raising money for a cause very dear to your heart, | :04:12. | :04:15.
can you explain why? The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, both | :04:16. | :04:21.
my children were born there, my daughter was very sick when she was | :04:22. | :04:25.
born. We have been associated with the charity for a very long time, | :04:26. | :04:28.
raising money for them, keeping equipment improving, and the | :04:29. | :04:33.
standard of the hospital improving all the time. Something that I love | :04:34. | :04:37.
being involved in. Days like this make it all worthwhile. There are a | :04:38. | :04:43.
whole team of you running. Everyone will notice you in that lime-green | :04:44. | :04:50.
shirt! Not the nicest colour, but there are lots of charities out | :04:51. | :04:56.
here, not just the Royal Children's Hospital, everybody is raising money | :04:57. | :05:01.
for a good cause, so important, everybody is running for their own | :05:02. | :05:06.
individual causes, important everyone raises money, going to | :05:07. | :05:10.
wonderful causes. Great to see you, all the very best. Thank you, loads | :05:11. | :05:16.
of people, who are going to get lots of support. I'm looking forward to | :05:17. | :05:21.
the start, a bit of a scrum, I will get my boxing gloves ready. Over two | :05:22. | :05:29.
George Riley. -- over to George Riley. We are sun-drenched in | :05:30. | :05:38.
Manchester, almost ready to go. I found some friends to run with me. | :05:39. | :05:46.
Bill, Louise, we only thing forward to this? I'm hoping to finish to | :05:47. | :05:52.
date, they promised me they will not take the hoardings down until I get | :05:53. | :05:56.
in. I have a dodgy knee, I will do my best. All about taking part. Very | :05:57. | :06:01.
proud to be running for the Teenager Cancer Trust. I did a quick jog up | :06:02. | :06:07.
the road. I feel very tired, glistening already. The sun will | :06:08. | :06:16.
present a problem. People will take longer than they may have done | :06:17. | :06:21.
otherwise. You are running for a terrific local cancer hospital. | :06:22. | :06:24.
otherwise. You are running for a of thousands of people helped by | :06:25. | :06:28.
them. Very important to people in the North West. You are a fellow | :06:29. | :06:33.
early riser, running with the sunglasses on? They are relatively | :06:34. | :06:39.
small for me, they will do the job. Maybe help me run faster. I am | :06:40. | :06:45.
looking forward to it. Going to stay left, stay slow, does that sound OK? | :06:46. | :06:47.
Your cause? I am running for Sense, left, stay slow, does that sound OK? | :06:48. | :06:57.
a deaf charity. A bit more suncream, we will start together. Let's do it. | :06:58. | :07:04.
This morning it was the men's and women's wheelchair races. All eyes | :07:05. | :07:09.
on Simon Lawson, the defending champion. Taking the title last | :07:10. | :07:19.
year, in the women's race, Liz Mick Turner, 10th in the London Marathon. | :07:20. | :07:35.
-- McTurne. We will see the end of that race shortly, let's catch up | :07:36. | :07:39.
with the start of the women's race Festival. | :07:40. | :07:45.
Lovely sunshine in Manchester, temperature rising. The breeze is | :07:46. | :07:51.
picking up. Let's see some of our main contenders, Helen Clitheroe. | :07:52. | :07:57.
One of the stalwarts of British distance running over the years. | :07:58. | :08:03.
1500 metres right through to the marathon. Juanfran is's best | :08:04. | :08:07.
European Cross Country marathon. Juanfran is's best | :08:08. | :08:18.
-- one of France's. She was third last year, second in 2011, knows the | :08:19. | :08:24.
course very well. A very good half marathon champion. Gemma Steel, | :08:25. | :08:31.
having an up-and-down year. She was meant to run in London, an injury | :08:32. | :08:36.
stopped doing that. Bouncing back with some good form since that. | :08:37. | :08:40.
Hoping to make her marathon debut later in the year. A performance to | :08:41. | :08:47.
day will help that. Trying to hang onto Tirunesh Dibaba, what can you | :08:48. | :08:51.
say about her? An all-time great distance running. So good to see her | :08:52. | :09:09.
in Manchester again. KLAXON, for the time being, the women have the road | :09:10. | :09:15.
to their service. Plenty of British women there, Ali | :09:16. | :09:23.
Dixon, Sue Partridge. Some of those looking to run in the European | :09:24. | :09:25.
Championships and looking to run in the European | :09:26. | :09:28.
Games. One two know they will begin piecing. Paul and I will chat about | :09:29. | :09:33.
that as the race goes on. Let's start with Tirunesh Dibaba, coming | :09:34. | :09:40.
off the marathon, running well in London, did not win, a solid debut. | :09:41. | :09:47.
How long does it take you to recover? What should we expect from | :09:48. | :09:51.
her? You have to play it by ear, recovering from a marathon. | :09:52. | :09:57.
Generally about 5-8 weeks before your legs are back with that popping | :09:58. | :10:03.
them. Sometimes you can strength it out. -- pop in them. She should be | :10:04. | :10:15.
in shape to run a personal best. Depends how long it takes her legs | :10:16. | :10:19.
to recover, get that bit of bounce. I do not think it will take too | :10:20. | :10:24.
long. She has had a low year on the track. No European Championships, no | :10:25. | :10:31.
Commonwealth Games for her. Aiming to come out and hit some fast times. | :10:32. | :10:36.
Will have recovered pretty well from London, using this | :10:37. | :10:38.
Will have recovered pretty well from whether she is ready to start to get | :10:39. | :10:42.
into those hard track sessions and the Somerville 's -- hard track | :10:43. | :10:52.
sessions and the summer. Heading towards the Salford area, | :10:53. | :10:56.
Old Trafford, that is about half way. As we have seen on this | :10:57. | :11:04.
course, sometimes getting a bit breezy out there. As we said, a | :11:05. | :11:11.
beautiful day in terms of temperature. A little breezy, I will | :11:12. | :11:17.
be interested to see whether that slows them down. Tirunesh Dibaba ran | :11:18. | :11:23.
the course in a record last year, pretty swift, hanging around for the | :11:24. | :11:32.
first five kilometres. So far this morning, starting pretty quickly. | :11:33. | :11:37.
Last year, a bit of a group, Gemma Steel trying to hang on to the fast | :11:38. | :11:46.
pace. Going out with real intent. The leader was the pacemaker in the | :11:47. | :11:49.
London Marathon, running a solid pace, carrying on 230 kilometres. I | :11:50. | :12:06.
think she is doing a little bit of work for Tirunesh Dibaba. She has | :12:07. | :12:11.
stated she want to come and run with a decent time. Very windy in gate. | :12:12. | :12:24.
-- Deansgate. We will see whether that affects the fast times. Not a | :12:25. | :12:32.
lot of shelter for them now. It was a dominating performance from Simon | :12:33. | :12:40.
Lawson, defending his title. The men's wheelchair race. From | :12:41. | :12:49.
Maryport, in Cumbria. A comfortable win for him. Britain's second | :12:50. | :12:56.
wheelchair racer behind David Weir. An emphatic victory. Jerry Ward, | :12:57. | :13:05.
tell us about your fabulous runners? These are some of the guys | :13:06. | :13:12.
who have helped me get through a serious spinal cord injury. Seven | :13:13. | :13:18.
years ago I was swimming in the sea, got knocked over by a wave, | :13:19. | :13:23.
broke my neck. Three months in intensive care, on a ventilator, | :13:24. | :13:27.
mostly at the Salford Royal Hospital. This is the seventh time | :13:28. | :13:34.
these guys have helped me get around the course. With the help of the | :13:35. | :13:40.
fantastic organisers. A wonderful site at the start. -- sight. Only | :13:41. | :13:52.
ten kilometres, they will go in a staggered start. The men will go | :13:53. | :13:59.
next, the first wave of athletes in what we hope will be a cracking ten | :14:00. | :14:08.
K race. He ran in the Olympics in London. Less than two years ago! | :14:09. | :14:15.
Still threatened two fresh in the memory. Always one of Europe's top | :14:16. | :14:28.
performers. Stephen Mokoko, if the two favourites are off their game, | :14:29. | :14:31.
you may give them something to think about. In good form this year. The | :14:32. | :14:39.
two big names, two of the biggest names in world distance running, the | :14:40. | :14:42.
fastest man over the marathon distance, the winner of the London | :14:43. | :14:50.
Marathon in 2012. And 2014. Not winning the Olympic gold medal he so | :14:51. | :14:54.
hoped for. We will see him at the Commonwealth games. Taking on one of | :14:55. | :15:01.
the, if not the greatest, perhaps highly gabby Selassie has that | :15:02. | :15:04.
title, but certainly very close behind. A lots of golden -- gold and | :15:05. | :15:14.
world records. So, the world greatest at the front | :15:15. | :15:32.
and all the rest following behind, come to enjoy one of the greatest | :15:33. | :15:36.
spectacles Manchester has two off of. This event has grown and grown. | :15:37. | :15:42.
The Commonwealth games back in 2002 provided the impetus for this event | :15:43. | :15:47.
and it has become bigger and bigger. So many people not just from the | :15:48. | :15:51.
Manchester area but from all over the UK, they have come to take part | :15:52. | :15:53.
in what is always a great spectacle. the UK, they have come to take part | :15:54. | :15:59.
Really interesting, this men's raise. Kenenisa Bekele ran his first | :16:00. | :16:15.
marathon with a great Dubuque. -- debut. Perhaps the right tactic, | :16:16. | :16:22.
unlike Mo debut. Perhaps the right tactic, | :16:23. | :16:29.
performance. He ran on his own for much of it and he looked good. Does | :16:30. | :16:35.
that mean we will see him in the marathon in Rio? I think Kenenisa | :16:36. | :16:44.
Bekele measures himself and monster tried to get ahead and beat | :16:45. | :16:53.
everything. I think he really believes he can do it. He chose to | :16:54. | :17:00.
go to Paris where he could run a bit of a quieter rays compared to | :17:01. | :17:06.
London, and run it on his own terms. Think the advantage was that when he | :17:07. | :17:09.
did hit his rough patch in the marathon, you was on his own | :17:10. | :17:14.
anti-was able to drop it back a little bit and recover from the | :17:15. | :17:26.
hamstring cramps he was getting. Two initiative Abba is looking really, | :17:27. | :17:39.
really smooth. -- Tirunesh Dibaba. She is on a very solid pace. There | :17:40. | :17:46.
was never really any question about who is going to win for Tirunesh | :17:47. | :17:53.
Dibaba. But for the men, there is a question. You would always expect | :17:54. | :18:05.
Kenenisa Bekele to put on a good show, but it Wilson Kipsang is | :18:06. | :18:17.
quick, then who knows. His best ten K was in a half marathon. If he | :18:18. | :18:25.
wants to try to win he needs to run hard from a fair way out. Wilson | :18:26. | :18:31.
Kipsang is quick but I don't think he'd be able to be on the same level | :18:32. | :18:40.
as Bekele. Celine needs to use bad rather than strength and that | :18:41. | :18:43.
Paisley can sustain on a long distance. -- he needs to use that | :18:44. | :19:13.
rather than waiting for it. Meanwhile she is a lovely looking | :19:14. | :19:20.
run-up to watch. She is probably hurting a little bit but has are | :19:21. | :19:30.
relaxed -- but her soldiers are relaxed. She is smooth rather than | :19:31. | :19:39.
being too bouncy. Gemma Steel is much busier with palms. She has a | :19:40. | :19:43.
longer, loping stride which can transfer well to the marathon but | :19:44. | :19:46.
longer, loping stride which can does put more pressure on the calf | :19:47. | :19:48.
longer, loping stride which can area, which was so weak area going | :19:49. | :19:56.
in. She is running well. They are fighting it out here for second | :19:57. | :19:58.
place. A good battle, Tirunesh fighting it out here for second | :19:59. | :20:07.
Dibaba is just turning it up a bit. She is going to | :20:08. | :20:12.
Dibaba is just turning it up a bit. interesting to see she can dip under | :20:13. | :20:16.
31 minutes. I think she will struggle to find 31 minutes. It will | :20:17. | :20:22.
be very close, though. Gemma Steel is a good minute behind. But it's | :20:23. | :20:31.
good to see her forcing the pace. She is sensing that she can back-up | :20:32. | :20:36.
is take the second place ahead of Polline Wanjiku. She just took a | :20:37. | :20:42.
look over her shoulder to see what began was like. It is not over yet. | :20:43. | :20:51.
She has moved over to the far side of the road. Gemma Steel has a | :20:52. | :20:57.
faster finish then you might think, so hopefully she has a bet laughed. | :20:58. | :21:04.
The clock is ticking away for Tirunesh Dibaba. No course record | :21:05. | :21:08.
today, perhaps wind is a factor in that. But it is great to see one of | :21:09. | :21:10.
the that. But it is great to see one of | :21:11. | :21:16.
winning in Manchester again. No doubt of her class. Tirunesh Dibaba, | :21:17. | :21:23.
whenever she races over this distance, she is pretty much | :21:24. | :21:30.
unbeatable. Isn't it good to see Gemma Steel forging our way from | :21:31. | :21:37.
Polline Wanjiku in the last few hundred metres by | :21:38. | :21:46.
Polline Wanjiku in the last few spurring her on and she is | :21:47. | :21:50.
responding really well. And she gets it. Well done, Gemma. 32.10. Wilson | :21:51. | :22:09.
Kipsang is trying to force the issue a little bit with Bekele. I suppose | :22:10. | :22:19.
over the past couple of years we wondered whether he was going to | :22:20. | :22:23.
come back, whether he would find the motivation, it was a bit of a | :22:24. | :22:27.
question with him. I think it was the great North run last year, that | :22:28. | :22:34.
raise was such a turning point for him. He was against Haile Selassie | :22:35. | :22:44.
of course. And he came out on top. Suddenly, it was the old Bekele back | :22:45. | :22:55.
again. He'd got his Mojo back. They are moving into the area where the | :22:56. | :22:58.
crowds start to build up and get better and better as they get | :22:59. | :23:03.
towards Dean skate. Many people have turned out and they are waiting for | :23:04. | :23:07.
friends and family to cross the finish line, and also to watch the | :23:08. | :23:15.
finish of the elite races. Their other leaders. A birds eye view for | :23:16. | :23:27.
us. -- there are the leaders. Thousands of others will be | :23:28. | :23:30.
following their progress throughout the rest of the programme. Giving | :23:31. | :23:36.
them a chair along the way, which is good to see. You have to fear for | :23:37. | :23:42.
Wilson Kipsang as it gets close to the finish. It was interesting to | :23:43. | :23:48.
look at their faces. The focus and determination and intent on the face | :23:49. | :24:00.
of Bekele. Wilson Kipsang gives less away. About 600 metres to go, this | :24:01. | :24:13.
is the third placed athlete, Stephen Mokoko, from South Africa. He is | :24:14. | :24:21.
saved in third place. But still to be decided at the front, the two are | :24:22. | :24:38.
stride to strike, the tempo" I'm. -- picking up pace. He does not even | :24:39. | :24:43.
need to find his top sprinting speed. Wilson Kipsang is a great | :24:44. | :24:46.
marathon runner and half marathon run, but with 400 metres to go, this | :24:47. | :24:50.
is Bekele territory. It is not run, but with 400 metres to go, this | :24:51. | :24:59.
to be a quick time. Still recovering from the marathon he ran in Paris in | :25:00. | :25:05.
early April. Wilson Kipsang of course run in London. It is great to | :25:06. | :25:13.
see Kenenisa Bekele looking as comfortable and relaxed us this. His | :25:14. | :25:17.
career is now entering a whole new phase, if you like. But for now, | :25:18. | :25:22.
here in Manchester, it is going to be an emphatic win in the latter | :25:23. | :25:29.
stages for Kenenisa Bekele, cheered on by this big crowd in Dean skate | :25:30. | :25:36.
in the sunshine as he catches up to 12 stragglers in the women's elite | :25:37. | :25:47.
race. Wilson Kipsang, the world marathon record holder, has to | :25:48. | :25:51.
settle for second place. Smiles from the two of them, a lot of Comrade | :25:52. | :25:57.
Durie out there and don't think you could argue with that result. -- a | :25:58. | :26:21.
lot of camaraderie. Stephen Mokoko manages to hang on to third place. | :26:22. | :26:28.
Nick McCormick is about ten metres behind the other two. Around about | :26:29. | :26:47.
29.20 in sixth place. Will you happy with that performance? Yes, very | :26:48. | :26:55.
happy. I won the Paris Marathon. This was my first try in Manchester | :26:56. | :27:03.
so I am happy to win. Difficult conditions with the wind. Yes, a lot | :27:04. | :27:13.
of wind from the front. I achieved good. Wilson, second place. But it | :27:14. | :27:23.
is not really your distance, is it? Yes, I think for me it is really | :27:24. | :27:27.
good. After my last marathon, I think it is really good. It is a | :27:28. | :27:33.
short distance for me but I'd be good speed is still there. When will | :27:34. | :27:41.
we see the two of you racing over 26.2 miles? I think this was the | :27:42. | :27:48.
start. In the coming years we shall meet again. How did your legs | :27:49. | :27:56.
recover after London, Tirunesh Dibaba? It was good. How other | :27:57. | :28:08.
conditions when you were running? The course is very good but a little | :28:09. | :28:16.
bit of wind. What do you think your next marathon will be? I have not | :28:17. | :28:27.
decided. Thank you, great run. Gemma, a brilliant run. Yes, I | :28:28. | :28:34.
wanted to come back with a bit of a bang and establish myself in these | :28:35. | :28:40.
races again. I feel with the crowd support and everything, I just feel | :28:41. | :28:47.
at home in these races. To finish behind Tirunesh Dibaba, she is the | :28:48. | :28:50.
baby faced assassin, the best in the world. And talk about the support | :28:51. | :28:59.
you got in the last 100 metres. Yes, that really lifted me and spurred me | :29:00. | :29:07.
on. I was fighting for that sprinting. It's good to know I can | :29:08. | :29:14.
pull it out of the bag. And let's just confirmed the results of those | :29:15. | :29:21.
races. Tirunesh Dibaba was a class apart, but a very creditable | :29:22. | :29:25.
performance from Gemma Steel lie in second place. In the men's race, | :29:26. | :29:33.
that rivalry will run and run, especially when they get to the full | :29:34. | :29:40.
marathon distance. It was a case of retaining his title but Simon Lawson | :29:41. | :29:53.
in the men's. So, those were the elite races, young athletes at the | :29:54. | :30:00.
peak of their powers. But let's be clear, advancing years are no | :30:01. | :30:02.
barrier to taking part in this event. | :30:03. | :30:10.
My name is Ron, I am 85, the oldest competitor in this race. My name is | :30:11. | :30:33.
LC, I am 83. I started running when I was 74, I wanted something to do. | :30:34. | :30:37.
So easy to do something like running. The training takes place at | :30:38. | :30:49.
Manchester City's sports ground. I would have two rounds of toast with | :30:50. | :30:54.
strawberry jam. I don't like pasta, people tell me I should eat it. Last | :30:55. | :31:06.
minute I was -- last year I was ten minutes in front of them. I sat on | :31:07. | :31:11.
one side, waiting for him to come, so that we'd finished approximately | :31:12. | :31:18.
at the same time. A fabulous experience, especially when you see | :31:19. | :31:24.
the crowds in Portland Street. Whether we will keep on running, it | :31:25. | :31:28.
would be nice to think we could, if we are fit enough, why not? Keep on | :31:29. | :31:38.
going. Rumour has it you were running backwards? Taking it | :31:39. | :31:46.
backwards. Why? They hold a Championships quite close by, I said | :31:47. | :31:50.
a challenge of doing ten kilometres Championships quite close by, I said | :31:51. | :31:57.
backwards, usually to just a mile. I have my glasses so I can see behind | :31:58. | :32:01.
me. I'm looking to do it in under one hour. Raising money for Cancer | :32:02. | :32:09.
Research UK. Have you ever tried it? I have not, I've even stopped | :32:10. | :32:15.
forwards. Easy on the knees, easy on the back. Promotes running on your | :32:16. | :32:22.
toes, good thing for a regular runner to do to improve themselves. | :32:23. | :32:28.
Quite intensive. It works your carb muscles. I will bear that in mind. | :32:29. | :32:43.
-- calve. One of the nominated charities is the Manchester | :32:44. | :32:46.
Children's Hospital, they have a unique member of staff. It brings a | :32:47. | :32:52.
smile to their faces to have a teddy bear on the hospital ward. I have | :32:53. | :33:01.
been putting him through his paces, getting him ready. Incredibly | :33:02. | :33:04.
excited, he will be there on the start line, cheering on the elite | :33:05. | :33:09.
athletes, he is looking to get a better time than last year. He was | :33:10. | :33:16.
born five weeks premature, he had perforated bowels. He was in | :33:17. | :33:25.
intensive care. It was scary. I went to my local hospital for an eye | :33:26. | :33:29.
checkup, I was having a brain Schumer operation. The doctor stayed | :33:30. | :33:35.
by my bedside all night in case something happened. I fully | :33:36. | :33:41.
recovered, now I am raising money for the hospital. From coming in | :33:42. | :33:49.
last night, straight into accident and emergency, absolutely brilliant, | :33:50. | :33:55.
the whole team was ready for her. I am quite laid back, I get by without | :33:56. | :33:58.
things getting to me, going for a run. You just have to look at the | :33:59. | :34:04.
kids, when you see them going home, happy, laughing, it is worth it. The | :34:05. | :34:09.
hospital has got over 1000 people running for them. They will be | :34:10. | :34:16.
wearing these T-shirts, we have a nominated charity for the run, | :34:17. | :34:19.
fantastic. To have 1000 people running, outstanding. That morning, | :34:20. | :34:26.
when he had his operation, we were in the car park. This is how | :34:27. | :34:36.
friendly they are here. They promised me a little boy, we have | :34:37. | :34:43.
got a little monster! The finish line will be busy for a good while | :34:44. | :34:48.
yet. You can see the times of the different waves, being set off at | :34:49. | :34:54.
different times. With so many people wanting to take part, they could not | :34:55. | :34:58.
have everybody starting at the same time. There is Humphrey the Bear. | :34:59. | :35:05.
When the Commonwealth games were held in Manchester, there was some | :35:06. | :35:09.
negativity about what would happen to the city, it was such a big | :35:10. | :35:15.
success. This event and others were created on the back | :35:16. | :35:19.
success. This event and others were have thought that 12 years on, we | :35:20. | :35:22.
would be watching 40,000 have thought that 12 years on, we | :35:23. | :35:25.
taking to the streets? Humphrey is a bit tired, he needs to do more | :35:26. | :35:31.
training, concentrating on his dance skills! We will see | :35:32. | :35:36.
training, concentrating on his dance Commonwealth games do for Glasgow, | :35:37. | :35:40.
but Manchester is a sporting city, second to none. This event is a | :35:41. | :35:49.
great part of it. A lot of people local, not coming to far. It is an | :35:50. | :35:54.
event which does attract people from all around the country. There is the | :35:55. | :36:01.
man who came out on top, as ever, Kenenisa Bekele doing his bit for | :36:02. | :36:10.
helping everybody starting off on the run he did so successfully | :36:11. | :36:14.
earlier on. That is how I would go out, on a bus! That gentleman will | :36:15. | :36:19.
be sitting there for a while, that buses not moving. -- that bus is not | :36:20. | :36:27.
moving. We saw some of the celebrities, all doing their bit for | :36:28. | :36:37.
charity. Some great sprint finishes! We survived, it was heart, we did | :36:38. | :36:43.
not break sweat at all! I am joking. 49 minutes, round about the same | :36:44. | :36:48.
time as these guys. Barry, 38 minutes! How did you go? I did as | :36:49. | :36:56.
well as I could. I did not expect it to be so hot. About 48. How was it? | :36:57. | :37:08.
Hard going. What about the crowds? Unbelievable, well done. Brilliant | :37:09. | :37:13.
to see all the people running for things that mean a lot to them. | :37:14. | :37:19.
Really great. The waves of finishes coming through, we should get out of | :37:20. | :37:27.
the way. Who are you running for? Well Springs. Epilepsy Society. | :37:28. | :37:36.
Fantastic effort from everybody. Barry was the quickest, we will get | :37:37. | :37:42.
a drink, your round? Sounds like a good idea! | :37:43. | :37:51.
At the start of the show we heard from the former Coronation Street | :37:52. | :38:06.
actress, Julie Hesmondhalgh. Running for a charity very close to her | :38:07. | :38:10.
heart. I'm here to meet two extraordinary people, my neighbours | :38:11. | :38:17.
and friends. Nicola and Mike lost their little boy, Ruben come to a | :38:18. | :38:23.
brain Schumer 14 months ago. We had gone on holiday, camping with our | :38:24. | :38:28.
boys. He had been a bit unwell, for a couple of weeks. , he was sick, | :38:29. | :38:40.
poorly. He became very unwell. We took into the accident and emergency | :38:41. | :38:44.
department at Barnstable, we lost in one week after diagnosis. We lost | :38:45. | :38:58.
Reuben at nine o'clock at the night, on the 21st of August. We're | :38:59. | :39:05.
aiming to raise money our face but changed -- on our Facebook page. We | :39:06. | :39:16.
are buying Reuben's Retreat, to help children in his position. To help | :39:17. | :39:23.
parents like us. On the 23rd of April, we signed for it. What a | :39:24. | :39:28.
fantastic building. Absolutely amazing. A lot of people say, you | :39:29. | :39:34.
are realising your dream. They say how proud they are. It is not our | :39:35. | :39:40.
dream. Our dream would be to have our boy back at home he is not | :39:41. | :39:45.
coming home. This is our vision, his legacy. Some incredible support. We | :39:46. | :39:51.
just need more to get the project finished. Three months to raise | :39:52. | :39:57.
250,000, starting with the great Manchester run. | :39:58. | :40:07.
Run. Alongside me, having done her sprint for the line, Julie. I was | :40:08. | :40:15.
overambitious on that last sprint! How was it? The first time I've ever | :40:16. | :40:21.
run, the first time I've done ten kilometres, what an amazing place, | :40:22. | :40:24.
what a city, playing kilometres, what an amazing place, | :40:25. | :40:33.
Manchester tunes, a brass band come in the atmosphere has been amazing. | :40:34. | :40:39.
Just thinking about Reuben, it helped me when I was flagging. All | :40:40. | :40:45.
the different charities, you really feel part of something amazing, | :40:46. | :40:52.
really privileged to be here. Very proud of your neighbours and what | :40:53. | :40:55.
they have done? They are incredible people, his | :40:56. | :41:00.
they have done? They are incredible some way behind, I'm hoping he is | :41:01. | :41:06.
doing all right, he would've had Reuben as the wind his wings. We | :41:07. | :41:09.
have hopefully boosted the fundraising. Getting close to the | :41:10. | :41:17.
deadline. I'm just so happy to be part of it and finish. I have a | :41:18. | :41:22.
feeling you may be back for a few more years? I could do it again now. | :41:23. | :41:31.
Right now, I need a big cup of tea, and a lady of my age should not be | :41:32. | :41:34.
going this long without going to the toilet! Well done. I will head to | :41:35. | :41:40.
Phil Jones, who is with Reuben's mother. I have some of the Reuben's | :41:41. | :41:51.
Retreat gang. Amy Perry from Coronation Street. This is your | :41:52. | :41:59.
support team, you are looking very freshfaced compared to some of the | :42:00. | :42:02.
sites we have seen? I'm glad I like it, because I don't be late. How | :42:03. | :42:10.
tough was it? More tough than I thought. I just paced myself. | :42:11. | :42:16.
Everybody was looking at each other, keeping going. Here is talent! -- | :42:17. | :42:26.
here is Helen back kisses all round, was a bonus! How proud I you? | :42:27. | :42:37.
Immensely proud that she has finished, all for Reuben. A great | :42:38. | :42:44.
cause. Emotional day? Really emotional, we have come a long way. | :42:45. | :42:50.
20 months in, Reuben moved to heaven. I cannot believe how much we | :42:51. | :42:57.
have achieved in such a short space of time, raising 20 million. We have | :42:58. | :43:06.
300 runners turning Manchester Reuben blue. Julie has a ready | :43:07. | :43:14.
finished, doing well, you have done us proud. Thank you. Pretty much | :43:15. | :43:20.
everybody has a reason to be running. Somebody they are running | :43:21. | :43:26.
for, here is a story about a dad running for his took girl. -- | :43:27. | :43:33.
running for his little girl. Doing the Manchester ten kilometre run | :43:34. | :43:38.
with some of my friends from high school and college. They initially | :43:39. | :43:43.
started running in aid of my daughter, Molly. Around 18 months | :43:44. | :43:50.
ago we noticed she was falling over a lot more at school. She was in | :43:51. | :43:56.
accidents every day, we thought it was a case of being short-sighted, | :43:57. | :44:04.
so we took to the opticians. They told us they could see pigment at | :44:05. | :44:11.
the back of her eyes, causing her to lose her site. She is excess with | :44:12. | :44:21.
Disney, as any little girl does stop Sheila those princesses. Snow-white. | :44:22. | :44:31.
Rapunzel. They came up with helping us to raise money for the cost of | :44:32. | :44:37.
going to Disneyland. It has snowballed, to the point where we | :44:38. | :44:42.
can pay for so many opportunities for her, she can do so much that we | :44:43. | :44:47.
never thought we would be able to give her. | :44:48. | :44:58.
She knows there's an issue, I don't think she knows the full event of | :44:59. | :45:06.
how it is progressing into the future, but she knows she can't | :45:07. | :45:10.
always see things that are in her peripheral vision. She knows that is | :45:11. | :45:16.
as a result of the issues with her eyes. But generally she is such a | :45:17. | :45:22.
bright, adventurous child that I don't think it is going to be a | :45:23. | :45:26.
hindrance, it will more be something to push her in the future. And here | :45:27. | :45:35.
is Chris. How are you feeling? Excited but nervous. There are six | :45:36. | :45:39.
of us here today running Excited but nervous. There are six | :45:40. | :45:42.
other people in different waves running as well. We've got our | :45:43. | :45:51.
supporters in the crowd. Is Molly here? Yes, she will be at the | :45:52. | :45:58.
finishing line to cheer me on. I'm looking forward to that. And as you | :45:59. | :46:04.
said, you've raised a staggering amount of money so far. Yes, last | :46:05. | :46:11.
time I looked this morning it was over ?62,000. We originally set | :46:12. | :46:16.
2500. We have smashed back. It is overwhelming. Tell us about this | :46:17. | :46:25.
man. He's been an absolute star. I've known him since we were three, | :46:26. | :46:30.
all through high school. So anything we can do as friends, we will do. | :46:31. | :46:36.
I'm sure Molly is so proud of you. You've done brilliantly. Thank you | :46:37. | :46:47.
very much. I can see you are running in memory of Tom, what is the story? | :46:48. | :46:53.
Sadly, in January he passed away. He'd been battling cancer for the | :46:54. | :46:57.
last three years. Around Christmas, it took a turn for the worse and | :46:58. | :47:01.
sadly he passed away earlier this year. What was his relation to you? | :47:02. | :47:09.
He was one of my best friends growing up, he went to school with | :47:10. | :47:12.
me. He was a very good friend of mine and I was very sad. With either | :47:13. | :47:19.
main inspiration for you running this race? He was the inspiration, | :47:20. | :47:28.
Teenager Cancer Trust was his charity, they were there for him. So | :47:29. | :47:29.
I wanted to give a bit back. Tell charity, they were there for him. So | :47:30. | :47:38.
everybody at home your name. I'm Jack Simmons, I'm from Essex. You've | :47:39. | :47:42.
done your friend proud, well done. What a day to be out running in | :47:43. | :47:55.
Manchester. It seems every year we come the Sun manages to shine. It | :47:56. | :48:02.
just makes it a better day for everybody. When you have to wait | :48:03. | :48:06.
your turn with all these different waves, at least standing in the | :48:07. | :48:10.
sunshine is a pleasant experience, whatever is to come in the next 35 | :48:11. | :48:16.
minutes, 45 minutes, one hour, one hour 15. What is your best time, | :48:17. | :48:22.
Andrew? I've only run a couple, so I've yet to breach the 40 minute | :48:23. | :48:30.
mark. But hopefully it will happen. It is a communal event, for some it | :48:31. | :48:34.
is about getting a good time, fathers it is just about running | :48:35. | :48:38.
with people and getting to the finish and sharing that experience. | :48:39. | :48:43.
There are thousands running but thousands upon thousands watching as | :48:44. | :48:49.
well. The running phenomena and has grown and grown over the last 30 | :48:50. | :48:53.
years around the world. I think it is only in Britain where so mini | :48:54. | :48:57.
people raise so much money for charity. I've been to many events | :48:58. | :49:03.
around the world and yes, the attraction of this race and half | :49:04. | :49:07.
marathons and marathons is there for everyone, but we just really seem to | :49:08. | :49:11.
embrace the idea of using it to raise so much money. Millions and | :49:12. | :49:17.
millions of pounds every year. And everybody who finishes, whatever | :49:18. | :49:22.
speed, whatever pace, feels the same sense of achievement. It's been | :49:23. | :49:29.
great to see so many people out on the streets cheering them as well. | :49:30. | :49:33.
Plenty to cheer about in Manchester. Well, not as far as football is | :49:34. | :49:39.
concerned. But the support is certainly well received by | :49:40. | :49:40.
everybody. A great day. Tens of thousands out on the streets | :49:41. | :49:50.
today and thousands were out yesterday for the mini Great | :49:51. | :49:53.
Manchester Run, including one very brave man who for good measure | :49:54. | :49:59.
started the race as well. I'm Charlie and I'm five. | :50:00. | :50:17.
It was a night in January and we were due to go on holiday and I | :50:18. | :50:24.
heard the most horrific scream. I've never ever heard a scream like it. | :50:25. | :50:29.
And I ran to where the sound was and he was on the floor in my kitchen | :50:30. | :50:34.
with a pan next to him. It had been boiling for 20 minutes. He must have | :50:35. | :50:39.
gone in and I had left the handle within reach of my little baby boy | :50:40. | :50:46.
and he tipped it over. It is like you are going to... Some sort of out | :50:47. | :50:51.
of body experience where you know you've got to ring the ambulance and | :50:52. | :50:56.
you had to get the clothes off home. I knew I had to get cold water | :50:57. | :51:02.
on him. As I took the clothes off, his skin was peeling off in my | :51:03. | :51:07.
hands. It was very, very frightening. We got to the local | :51:08. | :51:13.
hospital and the bed was surrounded by staff, but they could not tell me | :51:14. | :51:17.
it was going to be OK. I think that's when it began to hit me that | :51:18. | :51:23.
we could lose him here. They said, as soon as he is stable with going | :51:24. | :51:28.
to transfer him to Manchester Children's Hospital. It was 1030 at | :51:29. | :51:33.
night. We got to Manchester and there was an instant karma. -- calm. | :51:34. | :51:42.
There was no frenzy, they knew exactly what to do. It was really | :51:43. | :51:48.
reassuring as a mother. For the first time since the accident, there | :51:49. | :51:51.
was an inkling of hope that he was going to be OK. I'm running to raise | :51:52. | :52:00.
money for the burns unit at the Royal Manchester Children's | :52:01. | :52:02.
Hospital. I think it will be quite hard. He is ambitious, he is | :52:03. | :52:12.
determined, you've got great in his belly. -- he's got grit in his | :52:13. | :52:23.
belly. He has a really high pain threshold because of what happened | :52:24. | :52:27.
to him. It is great to be heard to be able to say thank you to the | :52:28. | :52:32.
doctors, nurses, the consultants who helped to his life. I've just | :52:33. | :52:39.
finished the mini Great Manchester Run and it was brilliant. Every year | :52:40. | :52:45.
we meet up with Claire Bond and it is a story which is very much linked | :52:46. | :52:51.
to the story of this race. Yes, I was having a transplant four years | :52:52. | :52:58.
ago when I was meant to be doing the run. I've come back every year to do | :52:59. | :53:02.
this run and this year was the best, so I'm really proud. It was pretty | :53:03. | :53:11.
warm last year but it was even bad back the worse this year. -- it was | :53:12. | :53:24.
even worse this year. Yes, but it was not that bad. And when we spoke | :53:25. | :53:32.
to you last year you said more people should sign up to the | :53:33. | :53:39.
donation register. Yes, there are still not enough people. People like | :53:40. | :53:43.
me can go on to live a full and happy life after a donation, so | :53:44. | :53:48.
please do donate. Congratulations, we will see you next year. | :53:49. | :53:53.
It has certainly been quite a year. Paula Joynson need to look back not | :53:54. | :53:59.
just that today but the whole weekend. -- Paula joins me to look | :54:00. | :54:08.
back not just at today but the whole weekend. Yes, Kenenisa Bekele did | :54:09. | :54:26.
very well at the marathon and then came out and said he wanted to go | :54:27. | :54:30.
after the record of Wilson Kipsang, which I think riled him. But I don't | :54:31. | :54:40.
think he ever believed he could keep Bekele off in the final part of this | :54:41. | :54:48.
race. There was good camaraderie between the two of them and you get | :54:49. | :54:51.
the sense they will have enjoyed going head-to-head. I think you get | :54:52. | :54:58.
that with distance runners. You don't see the kind of build-up | :54:59. | :55:03.
rivalries and almost the ego is at battle over the longer distances. I | :55:04. | :55:07.
think that is because you have an appreciation for the training and | :55:08. | :55:11.
the preparation that goes on to something, especially like a | :55:12. | :55:14.
distance like the marathon. You kind of all gone through the same thing. | :55:15. | :55:22.
37,000 people here have all joined that family of distance runners, so | :55:23. | :55:26.
you kind of have that respect as well as wanting to go out and of | :55:27. | :55:31.
course beat the other person. Tirunesh Dibaba, it was more of a | :55:32. | :55:36.
demonstration. But it look like she bounced back very well from her | :55:37. | :55:42.
event in London. Yes, I think she enjoyed running the marathon | :55:43. | :55:45.
distance and now she is more in our comfort zone in the | :55:46. | :55:50.
distance and now she is more in our the road. She did go out with a time | :55:51. | :55:54.
in mind but the wind that paid to that. Good conditions really for | :55:55. | :55:57.
running other than that went. It is quite tough out there, especially | :55:58. | :56:05.
between four K in seven K. Do you get any indication of what she might | :56:06. | :56:13.
be capable of open 23.6 miles? Yes, she certainly has a lot more to give | :56:14. | :56:17.
over that distance. She is probably without question the best over 5000 | :56:18. | :56:22.
and 10,000 metres. To see whether she can move up and dominate as much | :56:23. | :56:26.
over the marathon remains to be seen, but I certainly think she's | :56:27. | :56:31.
got a lot more to give. Let's look back to yesterday now. Start with | :56:32. | :56:38.
Christine Ohuruogu. She struggled, didn't she, over 200 metres. There | :56:39. | :56:43.
must be a question over what she will do at the Commonwealth. Yes, | :56:44. | :56:48.
she said she is having a bit of a down year and she is going to focus | :56:49. | :56:52.
more on relays this year. But also, although the qualifying for the | :56:53. | :56:58.
Commonwealth is on the 22nd, it is still early season and she always | :56:59. | :57:02.
takes time to get into a season and really wind up. And 200 metres is a | :57:03. | :57:07.
different story to 400 metres. I still think she will be in great | :57:08. | :57:20.
shape for the 400 metres. We were focusing on the head-to-head with | :57:21. | :57:26.
Chris Tomlinson given a controversy over the British record. Yes, it was | :57:27. | :57:34.
good to see Greg jumping well and building it into the Commonwealth. | :57:35. | :57:38.
As Steve mentioned earlier, when he went out in 2012 in that same event, | :57:39. | :57:43.
that went on to leading to lead into the Olympics really well and pan out | :57:44. | :57:46.
very well. So we hope for the same this year. So, the star turn | :57:47. | :57:56.
yesterday was Johann Blake. He didn't quite beat Usain Bolt's | :57:57. | :57:59.
record but it looks like he's recovered from his injuries. Yes, he | :58:00. | :58:05.
ran well and he's a very good shape. Hopefully we will see him run in the | :58:06. | :58:08.
Commonwealth games and we will see some good races and maybe some good | :58:09. | :58:12.
head-to-head between himself and Usain Bolt this summer. With this | :58:13. | :58:19.
wind, you might get it! Thank you, poorly. -- Paula. That's it | :58:20. | :58:41.
Oh, yes, I bet you are well jel, in't it. | :58:42. | :59:03.
part of the Big Bumper Bank Holiday Comedy 50th Birthday Weekend. | :59:04. | :59:11.
Ladies and gentlemen... It's an honour to be here. | :59:12. | :59:13.
Let's take a look... ..at the nominations. | :59:14. | :59:16. |
