Hampden Park, the home of Scottish football since 1903. Could you | :00:52. | :00:58.
believe that in 1937, nearly 150,000 people back in here to watch | :00:59. | :01:02.
Scotland take on England in the British Championships? Scotland won | :01:03. | :01:08.
3-1. But this am, it has been transformed into the centrepiece of | :01:09. | :01:14.
the 20th Commonwealth Games, hosting athletics. Construction is under | :01:15. | :01:17.
way, creating a remarkable track suspended two metres above the | :01:18. | :01:20.
hallowed turf as some of the world's best athletes hope to make | :01:21. | :01:25.
their own bit of Commonwealth Games history. Here on Scottish soil, a | :01:26. | :01:30.
Scottish athlete is going to take the gold. Yes! The crowd are loving | :01:31. | :01:53.
this. He wins his first ever Commonwealth title. | :01:54. | :02:06.
A whirlwind! Wales have a champion! Just a few miles down the road from | :02:07. | :02:17.
Hampden Park, another venue, the Emirates Arena, where track cycling | :02:18. | :02:20.
and badminton will take place. But today, it is all about the start of | :02:21. | :02:23.
the indoor athletics season. Look at James Dasaolu go! | :02:24. | :02:34.
Magnificent. Good afternoon to you and welcome to | :02:35. | :02:57.
Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match. In this Commonwealth year, it | :02:58. | :03:02.
is the first international sports event in Glasgow. A sell-out crowd | :03:03. | :03:06.
are here, with excitement building ahead of those Commonwealth Games. | :03:07. | :03:11.
Alongside me, two people who know all about Commonwealth glory. Denise | :03:12. | :03:14.
Lewis and Colin Jackson. It was a little time ago when we had those | :03:15. | :03:19.
golden moments. Here are a couple of golden oldies. New European and | :03:20. | :03:25.
Commonwealth record to the Prince of Wales! She is absolutely smashed her | :03:26. | :03:33.
lifetime best with that one. This is a superb demonstration. Colin | :03:34. | :03:39.
Jackson is the Commonwealth champion. Denise Lewis, defending | :03:40. | :03:48.
her title well. Great form. Powerful through the line, Denise. Don't | :03:49. | :03:55.
focus on the bad bits! Let's think about the good bits. The javelin and | :03:56. | :03:59.
the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur was one of the highlights of | :04:00. | :04:04.
my career. No one saw it coming. I didn't even know I was going to | :04:05. | :04:07.
throw it that far. It was a big breakthrough. And it really did | :04:08. | :04:12.
launch my international career. There was no going back from that | :04:13. | :04:18.
moment. Suddenly, everybody wants to know who you are and what you are | :04:19. | :04:21.
about. The Commonwealth Games were a sweet time. Colin, you started in | :04:22. | :04:28.
1986 in Scotland. When it was in Edinburgh, many moons ago. It was a | :04:29. | :04:34.
real launching for me to the flavour of international competition. | :04:35. | :04:38.
Rubbing shoulders with some of the best athletes in the world. I was | :04:39. | :04:42.
playing cards with Steve Cram, Daley Thompson etc. It was a huge | :04:43. | :04:47.
pleasure, because I was representing Wales, which was very rare. It was a | :04:48. | :04:53.
big year for the athlete. The Commonwealth games are sometimes | :04:54. | :04:55.
down the pecking order, but it is in Glasgow in six months' time and that | :04:56. | :05:02.
will be the focus. It will be. A lot of athletes want to medal at the | :05:03. | :05:05.
Europeans as well, but the Commonwealth is a special event, and | :05:06. | :05:10.
they have to raise the bar. Let's focus on this afternoon. It is a | :05:11. | :05:14.
four way match between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, taking on | :05:15. | :05:16.
Scotland, competing on their own for the first time, Commonwealth Select | :05:17. | :05:23.
and the USA. This is how it works. Four points for a win. | :05:24. | :06:16.
So plenty to whet your appetite. If you want to enhance your viewing | :06:17. | :06:22.
enjoyment by interacting on social media, the information is available | :06:23. | :06:26.
on screen. Avoid the small minority of idiot out there. The Scottish | :06:27. | :06:31.
team are competing here for the first time. We have been speaking to | :06:32. | :06:37.
a couple of their athletes. It is a big year for Glasgow and | :06:38. | :06:41.
Scotland. Two of the potential stars of the Scottish team, Eilidh Child | :06:42. | :06:46.
and Jamie Bowie, are alongside me. You can sense the excitement for | :06:47. | :06:50.
Glasgow as we look forward to the Commonwealths. It is exciting. Ever | :06:51. | :06:57.
since the bells rang for new year, everybody has got a taste for it. | :06:58. | :07:01.
Today's sell-out crowd shows that everyone wants to get behind the | :07:02. | :07:05.
sport. There is every chance that you will be the poster girl for the | :07:06. | :07:08.
event after what you achieved last year. Yeah, no pressure! But I | :07:09. | :07:14.
really want to enjoy the whole experience. It is just about | :07:15. | :07:21.
embracing it and enjoying the time we are going to have. It is not | :07:22. | :07:24.
often that you get a home Commonwealth Games. Jamie, your | :07:25. | :07:28.
timing is good, because you have run the second fastest 400m indoors ever | :07:29. | :07:32.
for a Scottish athlete. You could not have timed it better. Yeah, last | :07:33. | :07:38.
week was my warm-up event. So I want to get out today and take advantage | :07:39. | :07:43.
of a home crowd, get a taster for Hampden Park. Hopefully, I get a | :07:44. | :07:48.
good lane. I have just got to go for it. Knowing it was the Commonwealth | :07:49. | :07:52.
Games in your home country, has that renew an added edge? Definitely. | :07:53. | :07:59.
Last year, we were starting to get more excited, training getting more | :08:00. | :08:03.
focused. This year is the year that you need to step up. 2014 has | :08:04. | :08:10.
arrived. Eilidh Child, Jovetic captain today. Are you going to give | :08:11. | :08:15.
the crowd something to cheer about? Yeah, hopefully, we can put on a | :08:16. | :08:20.
good show. Hopefully, the Scots will have a few surprises. Enjoy the | :08:21. | :08:23.
afternoon and good luck for the Commonwealth Games. | :08:24. | :08:29.
Just a small taste of the atmosphere that awaits Scottish athletes when | :08:30. | :08:31.
they go to Hampden Park in six months' time. This will be the | :08:32. | :08:35.
badminton arena for the Commonwealth Games. But this afternoon, we have a | :08:36. | :08:40.
specially erected hydraulic track which then goes back down again. It | :08:41. | :08:45.
is a multi-sports venue. An plastic crowd. Up there in the gods are our | :08:46. | :08:49.
commentary teams. Good afternoon to them. | :08:50. | :08:52.
Thank you, Jonathan. We start with a very high-quality | :08:53. | :09:28.
women's 400m. I said this is a very high-quality field. Regina George | :09:29. | :09:29.
and Francena McCorory come here in good form. It is a first race for | :09:30. | :09:35.
Eilidh Child. She had such a good season last year. She will be | :09:36. | :09:38.
contesting the 400 metre hurdles at the Commonwealth Games later in the | :09:39. | :09:50.
year. George ran her second fastest race recently, and she has a lot of | :09:51. | :10:02.
strength. She is effectively on the inside in lane three. Victoria | :10:03. | :10:10.
Ohuruogu is just inside of her. What an opportunity for her. She was part | :10:11. | :10:17.
of our 4 x 400 relay squad in Moscow, gaining a bit of experience. | :10:18. | :10:25.
She is a huge talent, coached by the person who coached her older sister. | :10:26. | :10:34.
And Francena McCorory ran a quick 300 metres not long ago. She was not | :10:35. | :10:42.
far off her personal best for that distance. And Eilidh Child on the | :10:43. | :10:48.
outside. The Scots will be hoping she can lead them to victory, but it | :10:49. | :10:54.
will be tough. Huge cheer for the Scottish captain. What a year | :10:55. | :11:04.
beckons for her. There will be a sell-out crowd for every day of the | :11:05. | :11:16.
athletics, I'm sure. The first lap is going to be crucial, because | :11:17. | :11:21.
George and Francena McCorory will want to get in control. Eilidh Child | :11:22. | :11:31.
will be perhaps wise, as she will not have as much pace as them over | :11:32. | :11:37.
the first 200m, but who will control this on the first lap? The Nigerian | :11:38. | :11:43.
is representing from the Commonwealth team and the American. | :11:44. | :11:49.
But watch for Eilidh Child on the second lap. Many of our sprinters | :11:50. | :11:54.
have been away in South Africa, training. Eilidh has been there as | :11:55. | :12:00.
well. By all accounts, she is in good shape. The Scottish record was | :12:01. | :12:10.
set by her when she won the silver medal at the European indoors last | :12:11. | :12:25.
year. So, two lapse. Women's 400m. Nice, clean start. Eilidh Child | :12:26. | :12:31.
started quick on the outside. George also going quick in lane three. She | :12:32. | :12:38.
looks as though she has got through the first 150m the quickest. Eilidh | :12:39. | :12:47.
Child can come across and control. That is a good spot to be in. Well | :12:48. | :12:53.
done to get ahead of the American. What strength has Eilidh Child got? | :12:54. | :13:02.
Can she run down the Nigerian? Victoria Ohuruogu are struggling for | :13:03. | :13:05.
pace at the moment. Regina George is looking strong at the front. George | :13:06. | :13:11.
just starting to tire, as is Eilidh Child. The American is going to get | :13:12. | :13:17.
this. Francena McCorory, 400m specialist, takes it. George in | :13:18. | :13:22.
second, Ohuruogu third. And Eilidh Child perhaps paying for that | :13:23. | :13:27.
aggressive first 200. You have to be careful. She probably did the right | :13:28. | :13:32.
thing. You have got to get involved here. Lots of lactic acid in the | :13:33. | :13:51.
legs for all of the athletes there. Denise, that was an opener for | :13:52. | :13:59.
Eilidh. It was always going to be an interesting race. Like you said, | :14:00. | :14:03.
Regina George absolutely topped that pace out. As she comes into the | :14:04. | :14:10.
final stages, those legs are looking very heavy. It was a good race from | :14:11. | :14:16.
Francena McCorory, who had a good season last year. She timed that | :14:17. | :14:21.
race to perfection and comes through to take the win. Unfortunately, | :14:22. | :14:29.
Eilidh knew she had to command that first 200m. She was not quite there. | :14:30. | :14:35.
But I am sure she will be relatively happy with the fact that she has got | :14:36. | :14:39.
those cobwebs out of the legs. She has got her first race out of the | :14:40. | :14:50.
way. Third place for her. Francena McCorory of the United States | :14:51. | :14:56.
getting maximum points. 51.79. A good race from her. I think Eilidh | :14:57. | :15:09.
Child will be disappointed with that. 53.69. She really did attack | :15:10. | :15:15.
it. When you ran here last year you did | :15:16. | :15:26.
not quite set the world alight. You are never sure what you are going to | :15:27. | :15:32.
do. I said I was not bothered about times and I wanted to go out from | :15:33. | :15:38.
the start but I think I went out a bit too hard and died a bit of a | :15:39. | :15:43.
death coming home, hopefully the more I do, the more my legs can hold | :15:44. | :15:48.
on a bit longer. What is the plan from here? Keep doing more indoors | :15:49. | :15:54.
and aim for the world indoor Championships. You grew in huge | :15:55. | :16:01.
leaps last year, at the end taking a motor in the European indoors. -- | :16:02. | :16:08.
taking a medal. It gave me so much confidence. I knew it would all come | :16:09. | :16:13.
together. All the best. STUDIO: A couple of events took | :16:14. | :16:23.
place before we just came on the air. The first was the women's | :16:24. | :16:28.
1500m. STEVE CRAM: Takes up the commentary. | :16:29. | :16:35.
STEVE CRAM: Anderson of the USA was in second place. Military of | :16:36. | :16:46.
Scotland in third. The world bronze medallist from Moscow last year, she | :16:47. | :16:51.
would have been the favourite when they started. Showing a bit of class | :16:52. | :17:01.
here. She has had such a cracking year outdoors. A personal best at | :17:02. | :17:09.
800. And Obiri is making this a bit of a long run. I am surprised that | :17:10. | :17:14.
the American couldn't have gone with her at this stage. Obiri has only | :17:15. | :17:27.
been back from Kenya 48 hours. Hellen Obiri, the former world | :17:28. | :17:37.
champion at 3000m. Anderson can be quick over the last 200m but that is | :17:38. | :17:41.
a big gap the American has to make up. Obiri looking a little bit | :17:42. | :17:48.
ragged. A good lead for her. The American doing her best. So Hellen | :17:49. | :17:56.
Obiri, who one is corresponding race last year, in top form. Obiri comes | :17:57. | :18:05.
a way to take maximum points. A very decent time given the slow start. 4: | :18:06. | :18:15.
ten. Jemma Simpson is having to bring up the rear. She will be a bit | :18:16. | :18:23.
disappointed with that. A new stadium record, 4: 10.2. | :18:24. | :18:36.
STUDIO: Hastings for the United States, Henry for Great Britain. | :18:37. | :18:57.
Annabel Lewis also for Great Britain. She is looking very well at | :18:58. | :19:04.
the moment. Desiree Henry comes through to take it for the | :19:05. | :19:08.
Commonwealth. The Enfield and Haringey athlete. Her time was | :19:09. | :19:19.
17.33, pretty good. A good victory for the Commonwealth, for the | :19:20. | :19:25.
British athlete. That is a good win over Natasha Hastings, who is a 400m | :19:26. | :19:31.
specialist. But still good for Desiree Henry. Full points for | :19:32. | :19:41.
Desiree Henry for the Commonwealth today. | :19:42. | :19:51.
STUDIO: A little bit earlier on today it was a case for the new | :19:52. | :19:57.
against the old. 15-year-old Sarah was from Australia waited until the | :19:58. | :20:01.
fifth round before she let out to five point 28, I am sorry, 4.28 | :20:02. | :20:10.
metres. That was better than she had ever jumped, indoors or out. So the | :20:11. | :20:15.
15-year-old looking towards the experience of 29-year-old Steph | :20:16. | :20:22.
Green, Para -- Paralympic silver medallist. That came in the very | :20:23. | :20:28.
first round, just short of a British record. That was her best jump of | :20:29. | :20:36.
the day. 4.83 when it comfortably ahead of the young Australian, but | :20:37. | :20:39.
certainly the Australian has a lot of potential for the future. Her | :20:40. | :20:43.
coach must be delighted with that result. So first blood of the day | :20:44. | :20:47.
went to Scotland's Stefanie Read. COMMENTATOR: Now the men's 400m. A | :20:48. | :21:23.
couple of the best of Britain as well, Jamie Bogie representing | :21:24. | :21:30.
Scotland. And Nigel Levine for Great Britain. -- Jamie Bowie. David | :21:31. | :21:46.
Verburg is just five foot six. He says he is not a great starter but | :21:47. | :21:55.
he is a quality athlete. Jamie Bowie is coming on leaps and bounds | :21:56. | :22:01.
outdoors and was hard done by in the Championships last year. Chris Brown | :22:02. | :22:10.
knows all about success. He was part of the quartet which beat the United | :22:11. | :22:15.
States in the relay in the Olympics. He is running later on in the relay | :22:16. | :22:22.
here. And Nigel Levine, who has been the outdoor champion several times. | :22:23. | :22:30.
So a high-quality field. I know that the quartet from the Bahamas is | :22:31. | :22:34.
targeting an indoor world record in the four x 400 later on. So I wonder | :22:35. | :22:39.
if Chris Brown is going to save himself just a little bit. | :22:40. | :22:49.
35-year-old legs now, the man second to the outside. So it is David | :22:50. | :23:02.
Verburg of the United States, Jamie Bowie, Nigel Levine and Chris Brown. | :23:03. | :23:07.
400m. David Verburg says he's not a quick | :23:08. | :23:22.
starter but he is up there alongside Bowie. Chris Brown needing these are | :23:23. | :23:31.
duller -- the shoulder of Nigel Levine. Nigel Levine settles between | :23:32. | :23:48.
them as the bell goes. Brown out in front is looking for that relay | :23:49. | :23:51.
success later on and perhaps of the world record. To start the afternoon | :23:52. | :24:00.
well, will he get a victory? Brown gets the victory. Levine. Chris | :24:01. | :24:14.
Brown is an exceptional indoor man. He has been champion before. Nigel | :24:15. | :24:20.
Levine put in a decent performance. And excellent performance for this | :24:21. | :24:28.
time of the season. Colin Brown runs a completely controlled race. Gets | :24:29. | :24:33.
to the 200m mark and slows the pace slowly down. So if anyone is going | :24:34. | :24:41.
to go past they really have to work hard. He just accelerates down the | :24:42. | :24:45.
back straight, approaches into this corner, good control. He can have a | :24:46. | :24:50.
look at the screens now to see anybody is attacking, can afford to | :24:51. | :24:57.
relax and then opens his stride. A very good performance indeed. Jamie | :24:58. | :25:05.
Bowie there as a personal best with that run. 46.65. And we mentioned | :25:06. | :25:15.
the very powerful quartet from the Bahamas who will be doing the relay | :25:16. | :25:20.
later on. I think perhaps the Commonwealth team will be hard to | :25:21. | :25:27.
beat. But Verburg was not comfortable there, the American | :25:28. | :25:33.
trailing in fourth place. Chris Brown has a stadium record. There | :25:34. | :25:38.
will be a fewer of those in this new arena. -- a few of those. | :25:39. | :25:49.
Holly Bleasdale, the British record-holder and number one on the | :25:50. | :25:55.
pole-vault, we will see her later on. She started the season well with | :25:56. | :25:57.
a European indoor title. COMMENTATOR: All or nothing now for | :25:58. | :26:10.
Holly Bleasdale. Oh, she has got it. It is called for Great Britain. | :26:11. | :26:13.
Holly Bleasdale is the champion. Wonderful stuff. -- it is a gold | :26:14. | :26:17.
medal. COMMENTATOR: So a transport Mary | :26:18. | :26:29.
Saxer to take this at the second attempt. 4.42 metres. Holly | :26:30. | :26:35.
Bleasdale has had one failure as well. She gets it. A little bit slow | :26:36. | :26:42.
and sluggish but it was solid. As the bar gets higher, we will see her | :26:43. | :26:47.
go on stiffer poles. Holly Bleasdale now. 4.62m at the second attempt. | :26:48. | :26:57.
That is good. And she really has taken a stronger hold on this | :26:58. | :27:01.
competition now. Mary Saxer is really up against it. She has had | :27:02. | :27:07.
one failure at this height. That is very good from Holly Bleasdale. | :27:08. | :27:13.
4.61m she cleared earlier on this year, will later on last year, | :27:14. | :27:20.
should I say. Four point 61 she cleared. A little bit slower over | :27:21. | :27:27.
the last couple of strides but she settles herself and then powers at | :27:28. | :27:29.
the bar. Well clear in the end for the | :27:30. | :27:40.
British number one. Scott Simpson, her coach, the architect of what is | :27:41. | :27:46.
so far so good. So Holly Bleasdale on good form. | :27:47. | :27:51.
Denise, she has almost always been playing catch-up on what she jumped | :27:52. | :27:59.
a couple of seasons ago. When you jump as big as she did, there is | :28:00. | :28:04.
expectation that she just seems the outdoor season will just flow, | :28:05. | :28:08.
everything will go well, and it did not quite work out for her, and I | :28:09. | :28:12.
think that expectation just got the better of her. Last year she got the | :28:13. | :28:18.
really bad Achilles and back injuries. It has probably allowed | :28:19. | :28:22.
her to settle herself. She has moved her training base back to Cardiff | :28:23. | :28:28.
and she seems to be a happier Holly Bleasdale. And she changed her | :28:29. | :28:37.
coach. It was a difficult year in lots of ways. Yes, and a brave | :28:38. | :28:43.
decision to leave that coach because he was so well respected. Saying, | :28:44. | :28:53.
no, I'm going to skip week -- stick with what I know. Next on track it | :28:54. | :29:03.
is the British men's champion. Always good to see you and to daily | :29:04. | :29:06.
while leading the Great Britain team. Yes, the first international | :29:07. | :29:11.
competition of 2014 and it would be great if everyone puts their mark | :29:12. | :29:16.
out there and start as they mean to go one for the season. A double | :29:17. | :29:21.
major championships year, outdoors and indoors as well. Describe it | :29:22. | :29:26.
from an athlete's perspective, coming into a year like this. Yes, | :29:27. | :29:31.
there was lots of opportunity. The indoor competition for many people | :29:32. | :29:36.
is a stepping stone to see how their winter is progressing so far. They | :29:37. | :29:40.
will not be expecting to set the world alight today but they are | :29:41. | :29:43.
looking to make solid performances and to go on to the world indoors | :29:44. | :29:49.
later on the sea in Poland. What do you think the year will hold for | :29:50. | :29:56.
you? There are three major championships I would like to be | :29:57. | :30:02.
going to. And we had the Commonwealth games previously in | :30:03. | :30:08.
Delhi where I will be -- where I won the silver medal. I hope it goes | :30:09. | :30:10.
well this year. Yes, a proud day for Mr Sharman. I | :30:11. | :30:25.
wonder what he think about how people are doing so far, although it | :30:26. | :30:28.
is not his responsibility. A long way to go, as they say. This | :30:29. | :30:46.
is going to be an interesting race for will Sharman. Let's look at the | :30:47. | :30:51.
full line-up. The UK champion from last year is a | :30:52. | :31:27.
good runner. Jeff Porter is of course the husband of Tiffany | :31:28. | :31:36.
Porter. Roger Skedd is from Sheffield, representing Scotland. He | :31:37. | :31:43.
has never broken eight seconds for the 60m hurdles. I think it will be | :31:44. | :31:54.
close between Gianni Frankis and Sharman. The British team captain | :31:55. | :32:04.
wants to start this year off well. He was talking about how it is a big | :32:05. | :32:07.
thing to avoid injuries, stay healthy. He is just keeping his body | :32:08. | :32:15.
fit. He said he is very happy with where he is at this stage of the | :32:16. | :32:27.
year. 60m hurdles indoors. No room for error. Fastest in the world this | :32:28. | :32:36.
year so far, incidentally. Sharman gets a very good start. It | :32:37. | :33:06.
is going to be very tight. Sharman might have what it! -- got it! It is | :33:07. | :33:19.
all about that lean. The photo finish will decide this. Porter got | :33:20. | :33:24.
a good start, but Sharman was with him all the way. It will be a | :33:25. | :33:29.
personal best for Will Sharman, no doubt. What did he get the Vic | :33:30. | :33:34.
three? We will look at the replay in a minute. Colin? I knew you would | :33:35. | :33:38.
leave me to try and clear this up. Let's have a look at Will Sharman. | :33:39. | :33:43.
He has come out of a cracking indoor season. He has been very competitive | :33:44. | :33:56.
earlier in the year. You are not used to having pressure around you, | :33:57. | :34:00.
but he has worked hard and I think he may just have got it. We are both | :34:01. | :34:09.
wrong. Looking at you, I agree. But we have just been given the official | :34:10. | :34:16.
result, and Porter has been given it by a hundredth of a second. Feels | :34:17. | :34:24.
more like 1000th of a second. That picture does not help us. But it is | :34:25. | :34:31.
a personal best for Sharman, right up there with Porter. Really good | :34:32. | :34:35.
start. He is out of the blocks really well, and determined. He is | :34:36. | :34:42.
nice and strong, and still light. When he clobbered that barrier, it | :34:43. | :34:46.
made no effect. He still managed to keep focused, working into every | :34:47. | :34:51.
barrier. There is lots of noise around him, but he has stuck with | :34:52. | :34:57.
it. He just missed out, but he at least was rewarded with a personal | :34:58. | :35:07.
best. From his face, he knew more than we did. Just a hint of | :35:08. | :35:21.
resignation. Let's see how that affects things. | :35:22. | :35:36.
Just before we came on air, there was a proud and emotional moment for | :35:37. | :35:42.
Lynsey Sharp of Scotland as she received her gold medal for the | :35:43. | :35:47.
European Championships over 100m, back in 2012. The Russian won it, | :35:48. | :35:52.
but was then banned for a doping violation. The emotional moment | :35:53. | :35:56.
was, that was her dad, giving her the medal. She won -- afterwards, | :35:57. | :36:08.
she spoke to Phil. That was an emotional moment on the | :36:09. | :36:12.
podium, and one we all enjoyed. How did you enjoy it? It was a total | :36:13. | :36:18.
surprise. I was not expecting that at all. I was overwhelmed with | :36:19. | :36:22.
emotion. I didn't know what to do or think. To look around and see | :36:23. | :36:26.
everyone standing up for the national anthem was amazing. Thank | :36:27. | :36:30.
you to everyone. It has been a long time coming, but it was deserved. | :36:31. | :36:35.
Can we have a look at the medal? How proud are you of that achievement? | :36:36. | :36:41.
So proud. Since then, I have had a bit of an injury, so it makes it | :36:42. | :36:44.
more special to look back and think how amazing 2012 was. And now you | :36:45. | :36:54.
are tried to fight back from injury and come back in Glasgow? Yeah, I | :36:55. | :36:58.
have just come back from South Africa after training. It is looking | :36:59. | :37:04.
good. Tell me what your thoughts were when you were standing on the | :37:05. | :37:07.
podium, with the anthem playing. Does it at all make-up for not | :37:08. | :37:11.
having the opportunity where you were competing in the race for the | :37:12. | :37:18.
Europeans? Yeah, it was a bit strange, so now it is really nice to | :37:19. | :37:24.
have a British crowd in the stadium. We are all proud of you. | :37:25. | :37:29.
Congratulations. The women's 800m is coming up | :37:30. | :37:34.
later. No Lynsey Sharp, but she will have to be in action in the 800m in | :37:35. | :37:37.
the Commonwealth Games in six months' time, the 20th Commonwealth | :37:38. | :37:44.
Games. Hamilton in Canada first hosted what | :37:45. | :37:47.
was known as a British Empire games back in 1930 stock over the years, | :37:48. | :37:51.
they have grown considerably. Only 400 athletes from 11 countries took | :37:52. | :37:57.
part then, competing in just expose, whereas 2014 will see 4500 athletes | :37:58. | :38:03.
compete from 261 medals. Four years ago in Delhi, the home nation saw | :38:04. | :38:08.
the likes of Tom Daley, Dai Greene and Scotland's Hannah Miley all | :38:09. | :38:15.
return with golds. Just six months to go. Time to say | :38:16. | :38:18.
good afternoon now to one of our gold medal winning pundits, Paula | :38:19. | :38:26.
Radcliffe. This was Paula's year. She has waited so long for the | :38:27. | :38:29.
chance to win a gold, and what a place it would be for her to do it. | :38:30. | :38:39.
Come on, this is the gold medal she deserves! She wins it! She takes the | :38:40. | :38:46.
title. A scintillating run by Paula Radcliffe, one of the best pieces of | :38:47. | :38:50.
distance racing you are ever likely to see. That was a wonderful night. | :38:51. | :38:57.
I was competing that night. Your memories of that evening? Just very | :38:58. | :39:02.
special. Even re-watching it now, it does not feel that long ago. It | :39:03. | :39:07.
makes the hairs on my arm stand up again to remember how special it was | :39:08. | :39:12.
in that stadium in Manchester and to have the crowd supporting me on each | :39:13. | :39:17.
lap of the track. I don't think any of the athletes were expecting that | :39:18. | :39:22.
fanatic hometown support. That was the thing they probably were | :39:23. | :39:27.
expecting going into London in 2012, because of what happened in | :39:28. | :39:33.
Manchester. But for us, it was a special surprise. Standing on the | :39:34. | :39:35.
rostrum as well, the whole stadium was handing up, singing with you. | :39:36. | :39:39.
They are memories I will treasure for ever. One athlete who will not | :39:40. | :39:45.
be at the -- at Glasgow is Jess Ennis, unfortunately. You are both | :39:46. | :39:50.
mums who have come back to compete. Out of woollies before her to make a | :39:51. | :39:54.
comeback? -- out of Will it be for her? Generally, it is just about | :39:55. | :40:01.
organising yourself and getting out there and doing it. Being a mum will | :40:02. | :40:07.
not be an issue. I did not find it difficult making that adjustment | :40:08. | :40:12.
between now and mummy and being on the track, concentrating on | :40:13. | :40:15.
training. That will not be the issue. The seven events are getting | :40:16. | :40:21.
back to the shape we expect to jest to be in. She will want to be | :40:22. | :40:24.
winning again. That is the challenge. But she has missed a long | :40:25. | :40:30.
time. She missed last year because of injury. She will miss this year | :40:31. | :40:34.
as well. That is a lot of conditioning work. And a lot of | :40:35. | :40:42.
competition time. That, more than the nine-month that will change | :40:43. | :40:45.
through the pregnancy, it will be that time away from competition and | :40:46. | :40:49.
getting back in. The pregnancy is a good thing. She will come back happy | :40:50. | :40:54.
and fulfilled. If she is motivated to come out and attack it, she will | :40:55. | :40:59.
find a way to put it together. It is just whether she will have had too | :41:00. | :41:02.
long away from competition. I don't think she will. Next, the women's | :41:03. | :41:07.
60m hurdles. We have just been her husband in action, Jeff Porter. Now | :41:08. | :41:12.
it is time to see Tiffany Porter. Yes, Jeff Porter won a moment ago. | :41:13. | :41:20.
Can Tiffany Porter win now for Great Britain? | :41:21. | :41:34.
Another high-quality field, led by the world championship bronze | :41:35. | :41:45.
medallist. It was a fantastic moment for her in Moscow in August. First | :41:46. | :41:51.
success in that event for Great Britain in the world championship | :41:52. | :41:56.
for many years. Nia Ali, US indoor championship last year. One of a | :41:57. | :42:03.
huge group of talented women sprinters from the United States. | :42:04. | :42:10.
Gemma Werrett, Scottish record-holder. We will see if she | :42:11. | :42:21.
can get close to that record here. And Andrea Bliss, semifinalist in | :42:22. | :42:27.
the hurdles in Moscow. Just missed out on a medal in the Commonwealth | :42:28. | :42:40.
Games four years ago. So, the arena full-size and again -- | :42:41. | :42:45.
it falls silent again. The women's 60m hurdles. You can't | :42:46. | :43:11.
afford a single mistake. There was a stumble from Porter, hitting the | :43:12. | :43:16.
first hurdle had. That lets Nia Ali getaway. Alice strolls over. She | :43:17. | :43:23.
knew that mistake cost her. Just as the gun went. It is such a short | :43:24. | :43:28.
distance that one mistake will cost you. That was all it took. Porter | :43:29. | :43:36.
knows where that race was lost. It is a crucial part of the race. When | :43:37. | :43:39.
you accelerate into that first hurdle, you don't want to make any | :43:40. | :43:44.
mistake. If you clobber that first barrier with your leg, it stops you | :43:45. | :43:47.
dead in your tracks. Tiffany Porter went out OK. She did not have an | :43:48. | :43:54.
electric start. But as soon as she smashed into that first hurdle, from | :43:55. | :43:57.
then, it is about recovery and as you say, there is no room for | :43:58. | :44:04.
errors. You have to attack that first hurdle and hit it clean, not | :44:05. | :44:14.
like this. If you are reaching for that hurdle, you catch it on a | :44:15. | :44:19.
straight leg and it is a nightmare. I have done it on numerous occasions | :44:20. | :44:23.
myself, so I know what it feels like for Tiffany. Knocks her straight | :44:24. | :44:34.
back. She has to settle into a rhythm, which is about now, but | :44:35. | :44:39.
unfortunately, you have only got one hurdle left. No time to make up any | :44:40. | :44:52.
gap. One up to Mr Porter. Tiffany Porter could not repeat the victory | :44:53. | :44:55.
of her husband, Jeff. We have already seen Holly Bleasdale | :44:56. | :45:15.
go clear at 4.52 and then 4.62. His a third attempt at 4.72, which would | :45:16. | :45:21.
have been the indoor European Championship qualifying standard, | :45:22. | :45:24.
but that is not to be. But she has maximum points for Great Britain and | :45:25. | :45:30.
Blackburn Harriers. There is the result. 4.62, a new stadium record. | :45:31. | :45:37.
Mary Saxer is second in the world this year. | :45:38. | :45:48.
So the long jump, with Shara Proctor. We have Jazmin Sawyers in | :45:49. | :45:57.
the lead at the moment. She has jumped further. A solid start for | :45:58. | :46:04.
Shara Proctor. Six in the World Championships in 2009, and since | :46:05. | :46:10.
then, she has represented Great Britain with some distinction, it | :46:11. | :46:17.
has to be said. Not a bad take-off but better to come, I am sure, | :46:18. | :46:21.
during the six rounds of competition. This is only the first | :46:22. | :46:27.
round. There is the overall situation. Commonwealth Select have | :46:28. | :46:36.
extended their lead outside the United States and over the rest that | :46:37. | :46:41.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland creeping up on the United States, | :46:42. | :46:42.
and Scotland still in fourth place. Mr and Mrs Porter. Victory for Jeff | :46:43. | :46:56.
but you could not follow up as you hit the first hurdle. What happened? | :46:57. | :47:01.
I am not sure. I will have to have a look. It was a close one with | :47:02. | :47:10.
Sharman. It was. I am happy about it so I'm looking forward to the next | :47:11. | :47:14.
one. How difficult or pleasurable is it for you to watch your wife | :47:15. | :47:24.
compete? It is always difficult to watch her compete, regardless of how | :47:25. | :47:30.
I did. I always feel like I want to do it for her. And he is here to | :47:31. | :47:37.
support you always in all events. Yes, and we support each other. | :47:38. | :47:44.
Hopefully that was just a blip. On to the next. | :47:45. | :47:51.
Note blip for Holly Bleasdale. Winner of the pole vault. Satisfied? | :47:52. | :47:58.
Yes, I am really happy to just go out there and have fun. A season's | :47:59. | :48:04.
best and I am just really happy to be back. Last summer must have been | :48:05. | :48:11.
frustrating. Yes, to watch the world champions competing Waller was at | :48:12. | :48:15.
home injured, it was very frustrating. But I cracked on with | :48:16. | :48:20.
my rehab and I am ready to go. You jumped 4.62. Tell us what you are | :48:21. | :48:27.
doing. I saw an interview when you said you were trying to change | :48:28. | :48:31.
tending is last year and now you are just focusing on one. I am trying to | :48:32. | :48:37.
make sure my hips keep rolling over the whole time. That was really good | :48:38. | :48:41.
jumping. I have just come back from a training camp and we are trying to | :48:42. | :48:47.
iron a few things out. I was a bit rusty today but by the end of it I | :48:48. | :48:51.
got into the groove and we are happy with the progress I have made. You | :48:52. | :48:59.
seem to be so much more relaxed. Are you in a better mental state? Yes, | :49:00. | :49:04.
last year I was really nervous and I felt loads of pressure. I was not | :49:05. | :49:09.
really enjoying it. I was just going out and hoping I jumped high and | :49:10. | :49:14.
when I didn't I was disappointed. But now I am just enjoying it. I am | :49:15. | :49:19.
happy to be back and that is the best thing. Staying healthy, and | :49:20. | :49:25.
living the things that you love. And probably not thinking so much about | :49:26. | :49:28.
the magical five metre jump, perhaps? Yes, just taking it as it | :49:29. | :49:37.
comes. Just enjoying it and having fun is the best way I could have | :49:38. | :49:42.
jumped high. Good luck for the rest of the season. Next up, the men's | :49:43. | :49:46.
T44 60m. COMMENTATOR: There is Great | :49:47. | :49:57.
Britain's representative, Michael Poulton, from Saint Mary 's in | :49:58. | :50:02.
Richmond. He replaces the Paralympic champion Johnnie Peacock in this | :50:03. | :50:07.
event. He goes on the inside, then the favourite, Richard Browne of the | :50:08. | :50:14.
USA. Arnu Fourie of South Africa and then Felix Streng from Germany. He | :50:15. | :50:20.
is a guest in this competition. Four lower leg amputees. Notice, no | :50:21. | :50:30.
amputation for Michael Poulton. It is single leg below the knee or | :50:31. | :50:36.
physical disability resulting in a similar movement pattern. Richard | :50:37. | :50:48.
Browne is six for -- six foot 4.5. He needs to run 6.75 or quicker to | :50:49. | :50:55.
qualify for the next competition. Arnu Fourie, Paralympic gold | :50:56. | :51:04.
medallist. He is always there or thereabouts in Paralympic finals. | :51:05. | :51:10.
And finally, Felix Streng of Germany, double world junior games | :51:11. | :51:15.
sprint champion in 2013. He is only 18 years old. A great prospect for | :51:16. | :51:24.
the future. This should be a highly competitive race. It all depends, I | :51:25. | :51:31.
think, on how Richard Browne gets out at the start. Anything could | :51:32. | :51:34.
happen. It could be very fast indeed. The men's T44 60m. | :51:35. | :51:45.
Poulton, , Fourie and Streng. -- and Poulton. | :51:46. | :52:07.
A bit of a wobble thereby Poulton. Richard Browne got away quickly. | :52:08. | :52:16.
Fourie in second place. Streng third. Browne flew over the last 30 | :52:17. | :52:30.
metres. He has been given a 7.51. It is not particularly quick. He needs | :52:31. | :52:33.
to do work on the middle portion of the race. Michael Poulton was | :52:34. | :52:40.
absolutely left in the blocks. Fourie and Browne were almost away | :52:41. | :52:44.
together. Then those two beginning to pull away. Browne extending his | :52:45. | :52:53.
lead to about 2.5m by the time they reached the line. Good starter from | :52:54. | :53:02.
a man so tall. The same height as the Usain Bolt. Somewhere on his | :53:03. | :53:09.
body, he has a tattoo of a padlock and a chain. Somewhere near his | :53:10. | :53:16.
neck, apparently, and it signifies the day he was married, the 5th of | :53:17. | :53:22.
May, 2011. Certainly a very good win it here in Glasgow, when it | :53:23. | :53:31.
comfortably. -- he won it comfortably. A season's best | :53:32. | :53:34.
performance by the American. There is the current situation in | :53:35. | :53:58.
terms of the team standings after nine events. Much closer at the top | :53:59. | :54:03.
of the table. A single point between the Commonwealth, who have done very | :54:04. | :54:06.
well since the start of this meeting, ahead of the United | :54:07. | :54:11.
States, and then Great Britain and Northern Ireland over 20 points now. | :54:12. | :54:14.
They are catching slowly. We have had that one individual victory by | :54:15. | :54:18.
Holly Bleasdale. And Scotland now in fourth place. | :54:19. | :54:22.
We are going to take a break now from proceedings to pay tribute to a | :54:23. | :54:35.
great British athlete who died recently. I remember watching him in | :54:36. | :54:40.
the Great North Run and he was a great athlete but there was much | :54:41. | :54:46.
more to him than that. Sir Chris chat away once commented he never | :54:47. | :54:54.
made his mind up what he wanted to do in life. Global impact made light | :54:55. | :55:05.
of longevity. Twice and impact, there was one defining year in his | :55:06. | :55:12.
sporting life, when he won gold over three miles in the Empire Games. Two | :55:13. | :55:20.
years earlier in Oxford he had helped lift Roger Bannister to | :55:21. | :55:26.
immortal heights. In October of that year, bathed in a white City | :55:27. | :55:32.
searchlight, watched by an estimated audience of 2 million, he set a | :55:33. | :55:38.
world record of his own, beating a Russian athlete at a time when the | :55:39. | :55:42.
Cold War was burning hot. It's so resonated with the British public | :55:43. | :55:48.
that Christopher Chataway and not Bannister would be named the first | :55:49. | :55:52.
BBC sports personality of the year, at the end of 1954. Then he became | :55:53. | :55:59.
ITN's first newsreader, and later a reporter for the BBC's panorama. In | :56:00. | :56:06.
1954, he was first selected to the Commons as a Conservative MP, and as | :56:07. | :56:10.
a minister in Edward Heath's Government, introduced commercial | :56:11. | :56:15.
radio, before leaving in 1974 for a successful business career. He was | :56:16. | :56:21.
knighted in 1995 for services to the aviation industry. He were still | :56:22. | :56:26.
taking half marathons into his 80s. One of his six children said the | :56:27. | :56:30.
family had been struck by his amazing qualities of strength. | :56:31. | :56:38.
Humility and strength allied to unshakeable determination and | :56:39. | :56:42.
abundant talent, which for a golden period in the 1950s, made | :56:43. | :56:46.
Christopher Chataway one of the world's greatest athletes. | :56:47. | :56:55.
Great man. Steve Cram is in the commentary box. You knew Chris | :56:56. | :57:05.
pretty well. That film shows what a remarkable man he was. He was just a | :57:06. | :57:11.
great athlete. I think he was described wins as a Renaissance man. | :57:12. | :57:19.
He never lost his love for athletics. He was the first real TV | :57:20. | :57:24.
athlete. If you think about that race with the spotlight and cuts. My | :57:25. | :57:30.
coach used to show me film of that sort of thing and that was in the | :57:31. | :57:39.
October of that year. He won the first sports personality of the year | :57:40. | :57:47.
despite Bannister's successes. Chat away was key to his successes. He | :57:48. | :57:51.
was part of a great era of British athletics. He retired at 25. He used | :57:52. | :57:58.
to smoke during most of his career. He did not train that hard but he | :57:59. | :58:03.
was a talent. I was a bit embarrassed, so was Brendan, when at | :58:04. | :58:09.
the age of 75 he ran an hour 39 for 30 miles of the Great North Run. I | :58:10. | :58:18.
think 50 million people actually watched that race when he broke the | :58:19. | :58:21.
world record. Everyone remembers the role he played in the four-minute | :58:22. | :58:26.
mile. Did you get a chance to chat him about that, when Bannister broke | :58:27. | :58:32.
that barrier? He was a modest man and always played down his role in | :58:33. | :58:38.
that. Bannister was the opposite. He would talk particularly about | :58:39. | :58:45.
Christopher Chataway on the third lap helping him go through that | :58:46. | :58:49.
barrier. Chris used to play it down a little bit but they were of an | :58:50. | :58:55.
era, those Oxford boys. They paved the way for a lot of British | :58:56. | :59:06.
successes in the future. Who knows what would have happened if it was | :59:07. | :59:10.
his opponent who brought the four-minute mile? He will never be | :59:11. | :59:17.
forgotten. Back to the day job now for Steve because it is the women's | :59:18. | :59:19.
800m. STEVE CRAM: A fitting 800m as well. | :59:20. | :59:33.
To underline the talent that is currently on show. Laura Muir going | :59:34. | :59:38.
for Scotland, what a year she had last year. Claire Gibson has started | :59:39. | :59:46.
this year very well. Marilyn Okoro has come from the United States to | :59:47. | :59:50.
represent Great Britain. Then Chanelle Price. Laura Muir will have | :59:51. | :00:00.
immense support here. Heavily into her studies to become a vet, she is | :00:01. | :00:05.
at Glasgow University. She's training here in Glasgow. She is | :00:06. | :00:13.
doing a great job with her 800m and 1500m. Claire Gibson has had a good | :00:14. | :00:23.
indoor season already. She has got a new personal best, putting her in | :00:24. | :00:35.
the top ten in the world. We had hoped to Jenny Meadows was | :00:36. | :00:37.
going to run for Great Britain. She is not ready yet. And then Chanelle | :00:38. | :00:51.
Price of the United States. Not one of them or well-known names. | :00:52. | :01:06.
Four laps of the track indoors. What an occasion for Laura Muir and what | :01:07. | :01:22.
a big year for all of the Scottish athletes. She already qualified for | :01:23. | :01:25.
the Commonwealth Games team, but what could she do it here? Price of | :01:26. | :01:31.
the USA moves ahead of Marilyn Okoro. Paula is next to me in the | :01:32. | :01:56.
commentary box. Yes, Marilyn did win here in 2007. She will be looking to | :01:57. | :02:06.
kick off this year in a big way. Decent pace being set by Price. | :02:07. | :02:18.
Laura Muir right there, with her 1500m strength. She has also got the | :02:19. | :02:24.
support of the crowd here today. We saw Lynsey Sharp receive her medal | :02:25. | :02:28.
earlier. Let's hope that can inspire both of these girls to good formance | :02:29. | :02:33.
is later in the year. Price still looks strong to me. She knows there | :02:34. | :02:38.
will be danger coming as they approach the bell here. Laura Muir | :02:39. | :02:43.
looks composed and she has got strength. So, Price still in front. | :02:44. | :02:59.
Price tries to hold her of. Nothing she can do. Laura Muir is | :03:00. | :03:04.
discovering new found confidence, back to the ability she showed last | :03:05. | :03:09.
year. Gritting her teeth. This is going to be a great year for | :03:10. | :03:13.
Scotland. Laura Muir, the Glasgow student, takes the win. Fastest in | :03:14. | :03:26.
the world this year. Takes her to sixth on the British all-time list. | :03:27. | :03:34.
What a start to 2014, the Commonwealth year, for Laura Muir of | :03:35. | :03:42.
Scotland. Marilyn pulled up at the bell. Not sure if she was injured or | :03:43. | :03:46.
not really race fit. They are checking how she is. I think she is | :03:47. | :03:51.
OK, hopefully. Acknowledging this great performance I Laura Muir. She | :03:52. | :03:59.
will remember this day, Paula. She definitely will. She ran it with | :04:00. | :04:05.
real maturity. The crowd lifted her, but as they went into this end, | :04:06. | :04:10.
Price was forcing her to run wide. She did not panic. Her confidence | :04:11. | :04:20.
probably gave her the energy to bring it home over that last a | :04:21. | :04:25.
metres and close it out with a new Scottish record. You could see how | :04:26. | :04:38.
much it meant to her at the end. Yes, pretty much obliterated Susan | :04:39. | :04:44.
Scott's Scottish record. You know if you have got a big year looming like | :04:45. | :04:49.
this, what an opportunity it is for so many Scottish athletes. That is | :04:50. | :04:53.
to start the way she has can only augur well for her in the summer. | :04:54. | :05:00.
What a victory for the Scottish crowd to cheer. Laura Muir, that was | :05:01. | :05:13.
a world is run. -- world-class run. I wonder what her classmates will be | :05:14. | :05:18.
saying when she gets back on day. I am sure they will be watching. A new | :05:19. | :05:26.
national record. Steve, we will break that good news | :05:27. | :05:43.
to Laura now. She is draped in the Scottish flag. A new Scottish | :05:44. | :05:46.
record, sixth on the UK all-time list. You couldn't wish to start the | :05:47. | :05:52.
season any better. No. I have in working really hard. I am so happy | :05:53. | :05:59.
with this crowd. Many athletes say they are not sure what they will do | :06:00. | :06:03.
first time-out. Did you even think that was within you? I thought so. I | :06:04. | :06:10.
knew my speed was good. I knew my training was going well. And here | :06:11. | :06:15.
you are with the Scottish flag around you. It could be a huge year | :06:16. | :06:20.
for Scottish sport. And you want to be part of that, not just indoors, | :06:21. | :06:26.
but outdoors, in the Commonwealth. Yes, I am so excited. It is great to | :06:27. | :06:33.
compete with a Scottish crowd. You have given great joy today. Long may | :06:34. | :06:41.
it continue. Thank you. Under the men's 3000m, a chance for | :06:42. | :06:48.
this Glasgow crowd to see some of the finest exponents of | :06:49. | :06:52.
long-distance running from the last 15 years. | :06:53. | :07:08.
There is Bernard Lagat on the outside. Andy Vernon, a burly | :07:09. | :07:17.
figure, bronze medallist at the European cross-country 's in | :07:18. | :07:22.
December. What a wonderful athlete Bernard Lagat has been. And | :07:23. | :07:28.
continues to be. Current world indoor champion, winner of the last | :07:29. | :07:37.
two world indoors. He will be going to defend his crown in Poland in | :07:38. | :07:48.
March. Andy Vernon is a great exponent of cross-country running | :07:49. | :07:52.
is, but he has designs on the track as well. Vincent Rono from Kenya, | :07:53. | :08:02.
really plies his trade as a pacemaker in the big European | :08:03. | :08:06.
meetings, but he has the pedigree to challenge Lagat. And Mark Mitchell, | :08:07. | :08:19.
bronze medallist in the UK indoors a couple of years ago. The crowd are | :08:20. | :08:34.
encouraging and effort on the long jump. We are just waiting. Lagat, | :08:35. | :08:40.
gathering his thoughts. 39 years old. Plenty of running left. Andy | :08:41. | :08:53.
Vernon might try and take this out. Mitchell hit the front immediately, | :08:54. | :09:00.
but Lagat will bide his time. Vincent Rono is so used to being a | :09:01. | :09:05.
pacemaker for the quickest men in the world. Just settles behind | :09:06. | :09:09.
Mitchell for the moment. It will be interesting to see how this race | :09:10. | :09:15.
pans out. We have two very fast guys in Bernard Lagat and Vincent Rono. | :09:16. | :09:22.
It will be interesting to see if Andy Vernon has the speed indoors to | :09:23. | :09:28.
run well today. He is expected to be slow and tactical in this race. Now | :09:29. | :09:46.
Rono bounces his way to the front. Another late entrant to this field. | :09:47. | :09:52.
But he certainly has the quality to stretch Bernard Lagat. Andy Vernon | :09:53. | :10:02.
ran well in Edinburgh recently in the great cross-country. He had his | :10:03. | :10:07.
sights set on the Olympics in London and was going well and established | :10:08. | :10:14.
new personal bests. And then distressed fractures, the scourge of | :10:15. | :10:18.
distance runners, set him back for a while. He still has ambitions of | :10:19. | :10:27.
competing well on the track. I said it would be slow and tactical, but | :10:28. | :10:32.
then Rono lifted the pace a bit. Bernard Lagat then recognised that | :10:33. | :10:37.
and moved up to get right on his heels. I spoke to him yesterday. He | :10:38. | :10:45.
said it is cooler here than in Arizona. So, Mark Mitchell, looking | :10:46. | :10:52.
rather lonely with only four here. Another chance for Shara Proctor. It | :10:53. | :11:13.
is in the second round this time. She leads equally with the America, | :11:14. | :11:22.
but that is massive. Very free-spirited athlete. She has been | :11:23. | :11:28.
training well, and that looks in excess of 6.50, which is good | :11:29. | :11:33.
jumping. Not world-class, but for this time of year, it is exceptional | :11:34. | :11:42.
jumping fish are Doctor. -- exceptional jumping for Shara | :11:43. | :11:47.
Proctor. She has produced something special in the second round. She | :11:48. | :12:00.
goes into the lead on her own. The American, Funmi Jimoh, now. A bit | :12:01. | :12:08.
untidy on the runway, but that looks in excess of what she has achieved | :12:09. | :12:15.
before. She got 6.41 in the second round, the same round when Shara | :12:16. | :12:25.
Proctor jumped out at 6.59. She has been very consistent, but can't | :12:26. | :12:30.
quite produce the sort of distances that Shara Proctor has been | :12:31. | :12:35.
producing. She came to prominence in 2008, when she reached the Olympic | :12:36. | :12:46.
final. She is still in second place. Looks as though maximum points will | :12:47. | :13:05.
go to Britain. Bernard Lagat is still the Kenyan | :13:06. | :13:09.
record-holder, the man who now competes for the United States. Andy | :13:10. | :13:14.
Vernon is keeping pace at the moment. Mark Mitchell has been | :13:15. | :13:23.
dropped. It can get lonely and isolated if you don't have anyone | :13:24. | :13:29.
alongside you. Mitchell is ploughing a lonely furrow at the moment. It | :13:30. | :13:33.
will be difficult for him to keep his focus. But Andy Vernon is | :13:34. | :13:44.
running a great race. Vincent Rono is carving out steady laps, just | :13:45. | :13:54.
under eight minutes at 30 seconds per lap. | :13:55. | :14:04.
I am not sure that Vincent Rono would know how to run a tactical | :14:05. | :14:11.
race, he is so used to setting a steady pace. | :14:12. | :14:35.
He was going well in 2012 and set new personal best. But then he had | :14:36. | :14:45.
personal injuries and missed the Olympics. So he has points to prove. | :14:46. | :14:57.
And of course, the world indoors are coming up. Bernard Lagat will be | :14:58. | :15:05.
defending his title. He is sitting fairly comfortably at the moment. A | :15:06. | :15:13.
long way back is Mark Mitchell. But Vernon has picked up a decent pace | :15:14. | :15:16.
here. Quite a different feel to other two athletes. | :15:17. | :15:29.
You can just see as you look at it it looks like Andy Vernon is just | :15:30. | :15:37.
working that bit harder. I think he looked at the pace of the second | :15:38. | :15:42.
allotment in the middle, realised he had slowed to much, and wanted to | :15:43. | :15:55.
make it a faster pace. He was hanging in there and as he was | :15:56. | :15:59.
passed by the slight youngster from Kenya, leaning forward, but at the | :16:00. | :16:08.
moment, Andy Vernon keeps himself nestled in behind Rono. Andy Vernon | :16:09. | :16:16.
hits the front once a game and Rono is out bit now. This would be a very | :16:17. | :16:26.
popular home victory, but rather valves -- but Bernard Lagat has | :16:27. | :16:35.
caught up. Andy Vernon still digging in but he will not get there. He is | :16:36. | :16:42.
looking around for Rono. A victory for Bernard Lagat, a good victory | :16:43. | :16:49.
but a good run as well for Andy Vernon. An excellent run their by | :16:50. | :16:55.
Andy Vernon and I wish you could see the look on Bernard Lagat's face as | :16:56. | :17:04.
he came in up to the last 50m because he was looking behind him. | :17:05. | :17:14.
There he is, Bernard Lagat, with the Stars Stripes. He will be off to | :17:15. | :17:20.
the world indoors in Poland. He is the man with the victory here in | :17:21. | :17:25.
Poland. Andy Vernon gave it everything. Yes, he definitely gave | :17:26. | :17:37.
it everything. The last 200m was 27.4. Here Vernon made his move and | :17:38. | :17:43.
committed absolutely everything. His arms are just bumping that little | :17:44. | :17:48.
bit harder and Bernard Lagat looks smooth here as he came past. But | :17:49. | :17:52.
just coming around the bend, Andy was able to stay right on his tales, | :17:53. | :17:57.
and here he is panicking. Looking for the screen. He is hoping to keep | :17:58. | :18:02.
his form smooth and their Andy just needed a little bit more belief and | :18:03. | :18:06.
confidence because it was a great run, close to his personal best, | :18:07. | :18:12.
too. That was a lot of effort. Andy Vernon just could not quite get | :18:13. | :18:20.
there. And Lagat has won very many titles in his time. A victory for | :18:21. | :18:25.
the United States' team captain. A decent pace as well, Bernard | :18:26. | :18:46.
Lagat, and Mark Mitchell eventually faded and did not finish. | :18:47. | :18:53.
It is always great to see you here in Britain, Andrew, and you provide | :18:54. | :19:00.
us with entertainment and a victory. Thank you. Great Britain has been | :19:01. | :19:05.
really good to me over the years. Every time there is an invitation I | :19:06. | :19:08.
get excited and training hard because I want to come and give a | :19:09. | :19:15.
good show. Today it was a sell-out crowd. What a wonderful event. I am | :19:16. | :19:20.
happy I got a win, of course. It was kind of hard for me at the beginning | :19:21. | :19:25.
but once I got the momentum going, I kept an eye on the two guys. And | :19:26. | :19:30.
this guy in particular made it tough for you. Well done on the | :19:31. | :19:35.
performance today, Andy. It suggests you have wintered well. I was | :19:36. | :19:42.
surprised I did as fast as I did today. It means that my strength is | :19:43. | :19:49.
very high at the moment and hopefully I can improve on that and | :19:50. | :19:56.
try to get below 7.40 this season. Bernard, are you targeting the world | :19:57. | :20:04.
indoors in Poland? Yes, I won it last time in Turkey. It is not | :20:05. | :20:08.
easy, it is getting harder. But I will give it my best like I did | :20:09. | :20:14.
today, and see what happens. If I win I will be very happy but if | :20:15. | :20:19.
not, I will be happy anyways. Well done today. | :20:20. | :20:26.
COMMENTATOR: A really good race from Andy Vernon there. Almost surprising | :20:27. | :20:35.
Mr Lagat. And what can C Grice and Chris O'Hare do against the great | :20:36. | :20:42.
Kenyan James Magut, and David Torrence of the USA? C is just 20 | :20:43. | :20:50.
years of age. Chris, representing Scotland, is 23. Chris, based in the | :20:51. | :20:58.
USA, ran so well indoors last year. He went to the World Championships. | :20:59. | :21:04.
He had a bit of a hamstring problem. Not quite at his best but goodness | :21:05. | :21:10.
me didn't he run well? He got to the final. David Torrence is an | :21:11. | :21:19.
American. He has come here knowing he will have to run well here. | :21:20. | :21:26.
Tactics will come into play. Charlie has been out in Kenya. His coach is | :21:27. | :21:38.
looking forward to the beginning of his indoor campaign. And this young | :21:39. | :21:46.
man, James Magut. If you watching the cross country couple of weeks | :21:47. | :21:52.
ago, he would have seen this man finish fourth in the short course | :21:53. | :21:55.
event. Showing he has good strength behind him. He is a Commonwealth | :21:56. | :22:05.
silver medallist from Delhi four years ago. | :22:06. | :22:12.
Just four in this. They really good opportunity for the likes of Chris | :22:13. | :22:18.
and C to test not only their fitness at this time of year but how they | :22:19. | :22:23.
cope tactically with a very good Kenyan and a pretty experienced | :22:24. | :22:28.
American as well. You may think, four men in a 1500m, it is not going | :22:29. | :22:34.
to be too enthralling, but it is something I love watching, to be | :22:35. | :22:43.
honest. PAULA RADCLIFFE: Yes, and we hope they have been inspired by | :22:44. | :22:49.
Laura Muir's performance a little earlier on as well. Has Charlie | :22:50. | :23:01.
recovered from the altitude and training in Kenya? We were watching | :23:02. | :23:09.
the Olympic champion training on Tuesday, and Magut is a training | :23:10. | :23:17.
partner of his. He was the man who paced him, and Mo Farah, in that | :23:18. | :23:21.
really fast race in Monaco last summer. He may well be watching his | :23:22. | :23:34.
training partner here. Just leading this through here. Chris trying to | :23:35. | :23:41.
work out where he will base himself. Will he go back to America? He is | :23:42. | :23:45.
from the Borders and he has been at home for Christmas and New Year. No | :23:46. | :23:52.
reason why he shouldn't look forward to the Commonwealth games with all | :23:53. | :23:55.
sorts of confidence. Not to face, fairly slow, nicely placed. 62 | :23:56. | :24:03.
seconds or so just over the 400m, pretty steady. Not too much danger, | :24:04. | :24:09.
like you said, with just four in the race, of bumping and barging and | :24:10. | :24:18.
anyone going over. Chris has obviously decided the pace was not | :24:19. | :24:22.
enough for him and he has decided to move ahead of second place. And | :24:23. | :24:26.
Charlie has immediately followed him. So the two British athletes, | :24:27. | :24:36.
one for Scotland, one representing Great Britain, controlling this in | :24:37. | :24:41.
the middle, but the American is dangerous and so is Magut. Chris has | :24:42. | :24:46.
not been that decisive, and coming round this time as they go through | :24:47. | :24:57.
1000m in 2.37. Charlie is in the perfect position to attack but there | :24:58. | :25:00.
is going to be a strike here at some point, with two laps to go. It has | :25:01. | :25:05.
got to happen at some point, someone has got to make the first move. They | :25:06. | :25:11.
are all fancying their chances. Torrence is very fast in the closing | :25:12. | :25:21.
stages. The boys need to start thinking about making a little bit | :25:22. | :25:25.
of a move here. You don't want to be the first one but you also don't | :25:26. | :25:29.
want to be the one finishing having not made your move. The two British | :25:30. | :25:39.
talents at the front. No response from the other two. | :25:40. | :25:59.
O'Hare gets it. Well controlled by Chris O'Hare, just enough pace in | :26:00. | :26:06.
the legs to hold not only Charlie Grice of but also the fast finishing | :26:07. | :26:15.
Kenyan. Two Scottish wins, not only Laura Muir in the 800m but also | :26:16. | :26:22.
Chris O'Hare in the 1500m. These two young men are both real talents. I | :26:23. | :26:33.
enjoyed that. You can probably tell. I love to see the two of them | :26:34. | :26:38.
kicking hard like this at the belt. Magut got caught completely | :26:39. | :26:46.
unawares. You have to hand it to O'Hare, he won it by controlling it. | :26:47. | :26:52.
Yes, by his confidence and by controlling the race. Charlie Grice | :26:53. | :26:58.
behind him make the right moves but just did not have it. Magut suddenly | :26:59. | :27:05.
realises he has more left than he thought but he cannot quite get | :27:06. | :27:15.
there in time. O'Hare has said he is aiming to get a medal in the | :27:16. | :27:18.
Commonwealth games, and this is exactly the kind of performance he | :27:19. | :27:21.
needs to keep building his confidence. The way to win his | :27:22. | :27:28.
medal, he needs to get the pace, and then when you get to the final, you | :27:29. | :27:32.
have to have a good head on your shoulders. And he showed that there. | :27:33. | :27:44.
Just seven hundredths of a second separating first and second there. | :27:45. | :27:49.
What a great race that was. A win for Chris O'Hare of Scotland. | :27:50. | :27:54.
A tremendous win indeed. That was a from plastic performance. Nicking it | :27:55. | :28:04.
on the line. -- fantastic performance. How was it running in | :28:05. | :28:11.
front of a home crowd? It is a bit daunting but you just have to do | :28:12. | :28:15.
what you normally do, stay in routine. This is definitely my | :28:16. | :28:20.
highest profile opening race. It was tough to come and race against | :28:21. | :28:28.
Charlie and David and the Kenyan. I am glad to come away with it. Did | :28:29. | :28:37.
their help inspire you? Yes. When you see all the athletes on TV, you | :28:38. | :28:43.
think, how much can you really hear the crowd? But it really is an | :28:44. | :28:51.
almighty roar. The audience at home just saw your finish to that race. | :28:52. | :28:55.
It was close but thrilling. Can you imagine what it would be like to do | :28:56. | :29:00.
that kind of thing again in the Commonwealth Stadium later in the | :29:01. | :29:05.
year? Yes, Hamdan is going to be this times so many, so it is going | :29:06. | :29:10.
to be cracking. I will hopefully do the same. Good luck. Thank you. | :29:11. | :29:24.
COMMENTATOR: There is the result of the long jump, which we saw earlier | :29:25. | :29:35.
on. A good victory by Sharon Proctor -- Shara Proctor of Great Britain, a | :29:36. | :29:39.
new stadium record, ahead of the American. And Jazmin Sawyers of the | :29:40. | :29:47.
Commonwealth, 6.09, season's best for her indoors. Silver medallist in | :29:48. | :29:58.
the Olympic Games in 2012, Erik Kynard. He is in the lead. This was | :29:59. | :30:05.
a height but Robbie Grabarz failed first time. So first-time clearances | :30:06. | :30:23.
all the way for Erik Kynard. David Smith gets a new lifetime best, | :30:24. | :30:36.
just. David Smith, Scottish champion a couple of years ago. But this | :30:37. | :30:48.
time, he is competing with the best. Very solid performance. English and | :30:49. | :30:52.
23 champion in 2011. Then the Scottish champion. Robbie Grabarz | :30:53. | :30:57.
has got to get this to stay in, and he does. Takes him three attempts to | :30:58. | :31:05.
get it. This height has proved to be difficult for the Olympic bronze | :31:06. | :31:10.
medallist. Three attempts, after such easy clearances earlier. That | :31:11. | :31:22.
was an easy clearance, too. Now we come to the distance of | :31:23. | :31:30.
150m, he rarely one distance. It was suggested by the star turn in this | :31:31. | :31:35.
race, Kim Collins. He said it would be nice to try something different. | :31:36. | :31:50.
Ameer Webb is the current US collegiate champion over 200m, | :31:51. | :32:09.
indoors and out. James Ellington, twice the UK champion over 200m | :32:10. | :32:14.
outdoors. He has a friendly rivalry with Kim Collins. Collins has got | :32:15. | :32:27.
the 800m pedigree. I wonder if he will be at the Commonwealth Games. | :32:28. | :32:58.
Ryan Oswald goes on the inside. Collins has, in his long career, run | :32:59. | :33:02.
15.15 outside of this distance. The men's 150m. Collins lifts his | :33:03. | :33:30.
head and powers on . Here is alongside Ellington full up Ryan | :33:31. | :33:39.
Oswald is being left. Finishing strongly, Ellington and Ameer Webb, | :33:40. | :33:44.
but Collins takes the victory. The old man is still winning at 37. We | :33:45. | :33:51.
hope he is in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, because he is a | :33:52. | :33:55.
star and he has won here indoors in Glasgow. The Commonwealth team | :33:56. | :34:01.
captain, with another victory for his team. Colin Jackson was watching | :34:02. | :34:07.
that. 37 years old, Kim Collins, but still a very quick run. He is still | :34:08. | :34:14.
full of running, Colin. Indeed. He drove out of the blocks very well. I | :34:15. | :34:19.
was wondering how he would approach going into the bend. You reach the | :34:20. | :34:23.
corner much faster than you would normally approach it, but he handled | :34:24. | :34:31.
it well. Strong, electric. Then he had to pick up his knees to maintain | :34:32. | :34:36.
the performance. It was a great performance, but I thought James | :34:37. | :34:39.
Ellington did well to sneak second place. He was closing down on Kim | :34:40. | :34:44.
Collins. James had a wonderful season last year. If he can build on | :34:45. | :34:51.
that and be ready for the European Championships as well as the common | :34:52. | :34:55.
or games. But this time, Kim Collins takes the victory. It is a familiar | :34:56. | :35:02.
sight, his own style, arms waving all over the place, but still | :35:03. | :35:14.
winning. A personal best for all of them, because they have not run this | :35:15. | :35:21.
distance before. Let's see how that affects the | :35:22. | :35:23.
overall match score. Kim, you are keeping your team right | :35:24. | :35:43.
in the mix with the USA. Your first win in Glasgow? Yes, I had been | :35:44. | :35:52.
coming second every time. But this year, I said I have to do it for my | :35:53. | :35:57.
team. We have to continue the winning tradition. What are the | :35:58. | :36:02.
chances of you replicating that kind of performance, come the summer in | :36:03. | :36:07.
Glasgow at the Commonwealths? It is a great chance. Hopefully, we can | :36:08. | :36:16.
start new communications and get back on track for the good of the | :36:17. | :36:20.
sport and for all of us. But was the way you first came to prominence for | :36:21. | :36:23.
us, at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. It would be great to do | :36:24. | :36:29.
something again back he in Britain. Just to be back 12 years at the | :36:30. | :36:33.
Commonwealth Games would be an amazing achievement adjust for me, | :36:34. | :36:36.
but for the sport of track and field. You defy age. It is great to | :36:37. | :36:50.
see! Thanks very much. Certainly, the high jump is being watched by a | :36:51. | :36:55.
lot of spectators in the stadium, including, on the far side... A | :36:56. | :37:05.
chance to watch the great American once more. He has had first-time | :37:06. | :37:13.
clearances all the way. And he gets it again. He is flying at the | :37:14. | :37:26.
moment. Looks as though there is a lot more to come. I bet he has got | :37:27. | :37:31.
one eye on heading towards the top of the moment. Robbie Grabarz now | :37:32. | :37:41.
for Great Britain. He has got to get this to stay in, and does not do it. | :37:42. | :37:50.
That means that David Smith, who should jump next, will be ahead of | :37:51. | :37:58.
Robbie Grabarz, the Olympic bronze medallist, so he will be delighted | :37:59. | :38:02.
with that performance. That was an abortive attempt by Robbie. He is | :38:03. | :38:10.
being watched by his coach underneath the hoardings. What a | :38:11. | :38:16.
performance it has been by David Smith. I bet when he came here, he | :38:17. | :38:21.
did not dream he would be clearing out of 2.27. He just failed it. My | :38:22. | :38:32.
goodness, that was so close. 2.24 at the last attempt. But surely he will | :38:33. | :38:46.
get that later on. Scotland has hosted the games twice | :38:47. | :38:50.
before, both times in Edinburgh. In 1970, there were calls for Olympic | :38:51. | :38:55.
champions Lynn Davies, David Hemery and Mary Peters. On the success | :38:56. | :38:59.
continued in 1986 but the likes of Daley Thompson, Roger Black, Liz | :39:00. | :39:04.
McColgan and many more. Scotland is its seventh in the overall | :39:05. | :39:07.
standings, with 91 goals, 104 silvers and 160 bronze medals. This | :39:08. | :39:11.
year, they have a target of more than 33 medals. | :39:12. | :39:19.
179 days to go. We have got a flavour of what sort of partisan | :39:20. | :39:22.
atmosphere it will be, with performances from Laura Muir and | :39:23. | :39:26.
Chris O'Hare. Less thirsty talk about Laura, Denise. Fantastic. Like | :39:27. | :39:31.
you said, the atmosphere was incredible. We have talked before | :39:32. | :39:35.
about the state of middle distance running and how healthy it is, and | :39:36. | :39:43.
she typifies that. Running so confidently for someone who is just | :39:44. | :39:48.
20. Great for the crowd, great for her. And you could see in the | :39:49. | :39:54.
interview afterwards that things had been going well in training. She | :39:55. | :39:59.
guessed this might happen. It is no accident when athletes perform well. | :40:00. | :40:03.
You get an indication about the training, and she has done it. And | :40:04. | :40:13.
that 1500m, Colin. That is what we like to see. Indoors, you have that | :40:14. | :40:17.
option to have a good competition. Look at these two British boys, the | :40:18. | :40:22.
victory going to Scotland. I think that was assisted by this wonderful | :40:23. | :40:27.
audience. The smile says it all. Next, the men's 600m, a rarely run | :40:28. | :40:37.
race. It will be one to watch, with Andrew Osagie against Sean Jackson. | :40:38. | :40:40.
Unfortunately, Jackson is a late withdrawal. | :40:41. | :40:44.
I am going to predict that Andrew Osagie will become Britain's first | :40:45. | :40:51.
winner on the track today. The British record, remember Dai Greene | :40:52. | :40:58.
here last year, he ran 76.22. I think that will be under threat from | :40:59. | :41:00.
her psyche. -- from Andrew Osagie. Andrew had a very good World | :41:01. | :41:25.
Championships. Looked good going through the rounds. And of course, | :41:26. | :41:32.
that Olympic final which everybody remembers, running a personal best, | :41:33. | :41:36.
trailing behind David Rudisha as everybody did in 2012. But he has | :41:37. | :41:43.
been training in South Africa. And he and his coach say they are | :41:44. | :41:49.
looking forward to this. He was behind Dai Greene last year. A | :41:50. | :42:03.
British record. And I don't think the fact that Jackson is a late | :42:04. | :42:08.
withdrawal, we are told it is a hamstring pull in warm-up, I don't | :42:09. | :42:12.
think that will worry Andrew. He would have attacked this from the | :42:13. | :42:18.
start anyway. Guy Learmonth is another man who has qualified for | :42:19. | :42:20.
Scotland to run at the Commonwealth Games next summer. And Jeremiah | :42:21. | :42:31.
Mutai representing the Commonwealth. I am not sure they had a great | :42:32. | :42:35.
contingent of 800m runners at the World Championships last year full | :42:36. | :42:40.
of David Rudisha is progressing, not as fast as he would like. It is | :42:41. | :42:44.
still a question mark as to whether he will be at the Commonwealth games | :42:45. | :42:47.
in the summer, but he wants to be there. So, Osagie. Three laps of the | :42:48. | :43:03.
track. 600m. 76.22, the target. Jeremiah Mutai has not been told. He | :43:04. | :43:08.
is still down there in the set position, bless him. The green card | :43:09. | :43:21.
has been shown to Andrew. The other two could not see. The fact that he | :43:22. | :43:40.
has got two athletes to chase down means that Andrew does not want to | :43:41. | :43:44.
go to quit through the first 300 metres. He needs to relax into this. | :43:45. | :43:48.
He wants to be in the lead as they come round, and he will be. Maybe a | :43:49. | :44:02.
bit quick, but he is attacking this. Guy Learmonth struggling for pace at | :44:03. | :44:11.
the moment. Mutai will be a danger. This is when you find out whether | :44:12. | :44:22.
you're winter strength is there. This is fast. Can he give us a big | :44:23. | :44:31.
glass 200m? Guy Learmonth is getting closer. The Scottish crowd sensed | :44:32. | :44:37.
there could be an upset here. Learmonth within striking distance. | :44:38. | :44:44.
Learmonth coming on the outside. This would be a big shock. He is | :44:45. | :44:49.
going to get that, despite Mutai pushing him out. What a surprise! | :44:50. | :44:54.
Look at his face. He can't believe it. There go my predictions out of | :44:55. | :45:02.
the window. Exactly! Andrew Osagie is not the first British winner on | :45:03. | :45:05.
the track. He looks disgusted with his performance. Muthiah, when we | :45:06. | :45:19.
see this head on, did his best. He was pushing him out but he was | :45:20. | :45:23.
strong. Sometimes you are training so well and you come with all sorts | :45:24. | :45:33.
of expectation... But he paid for it on the last lap. He did, it was just | :45:34. | :45:38.
too fast. When we saw that LaShawn Jackson did not come out, -- | :45:39. | :45:44.
Bershawn Jackson did not come out, I said, will that be a problem, not | :45:45. | :45:50.
having anyone to push him out? But in actual fact, he panicked a bit | :45:51. | :45:55.
and went out too fast. He was just tying up here and you can see him | :45:56. | :46:00.
starting to lean AC at the bell and he looked like he was treading | :46:01. | :46:06.
water. And Learmonth was gaining confidence from that and was able to | :46:07. | :46:18.
fight his way through. He has run a Scottish record and the raised David | :46:19. | :46:21.
Jenkins from the record books as well. As he is just the third | :46:22. | :46:26.
British man to run under 77 for 600m, a really good confidence | :46:27. | :46:34.
booster for him. He did the right thing. He did not go off too hard. | :46:35. | :46:39.
He kept himself in contact. He was strong on the last lap. But I think | :46:40. | :46:43.
Andrew will be pretty despondent about that. Hi 27s for the last | :46:44. | :46:50.
200m. That is not what he came here for. | :46:51. | :46:57.
Yet another mandrake in the national flag. We had that feeling coming | :46:58. | :47:05.
here today, it is a big year for Scotland. A couple of people did it | :47:06. | :47:09.
already. Where you inspired by them and the crowd? Yes, and I had a good | :47:10. | :47:14.
team. We just came to enjoy ourselves and to do the best we | :47:15. | :47:24.
could for ourselves and our country. In the last 50m, the roar of the | :47:25. | :47:29.
crowd in this arena was incredible and that is what got me through. The | :47:30. | :47:34.
racket is unbelievable. Absolutely brilliant. And this is just the | :47:35. | :47:40.
start for you. What do you hope to do to build on this? I am not sure | :47:41. | :47:47.
about in doors. I might have a big indoor season now I have come out | :47:48. | :47:52.
and run well. My training has been incredible this winter. I will see | :47:53. | :47:56.
where I go from here. But obviously it is all running up to the | :47:57. | :48:00.
Commonwealth Games. We all hope you get there and enjoy the experience. | :48:01. | :48:02.
Thank you. COMMENTATOR: Eric Kynard has | :48:03. | :48:13.
dominated this competition right from the outset. 2.33 now. He flies | :48:14. | :48:20.
over. He was the only man to clear two point 27. Both Robbie Grabarz | :48:21. | :48:26.
and they beat Smith failed that height. -- David Smith. 2.33, and | :48:27. | :48:37.
that puts him second on this year's world rankings. He won a silver | :48:38. | :48:44.
medal in the Olympics, albeit a surprise silver medal. We knew when | :48:45. | :48:48.
we saw him he was a very fine athlete. There is the result. Eric | :48:49. | :48:54.
Kynard did try to .36 but failed it, so 2.33 was a victory for him. | :48:55. | :48:59.
-- Eric Kynard did try to .36. -- 2.36m. STUDIO: Next weekend is | :49:00. | :49:11.
the start of the Six Nations. On the 17th of February, our next | :49:12. | :49:30.
athletics, the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix. I have to say, did and | :49:31. | :49:36.
Colin, the organisers of the Commonwealth games was here, and | :49:37. | :49:42.
must be thinking, if this is an omen of things to come, happy days! | :49:43. | :49:48.
So much emphasis is placed on the big names but for the Commonwealth | :49:49. | :49:54.
Games it is all about the emerging stars, people using the opportunity | :49:55. | :49:59.
to make a name for themselves, and I just think so far, this has been | :50:00. | :50:02.
absolutely brilliant. What we want to see is that home advantage. Chris | :50:03. | :50:09.
O'Hare said people talk about the crowd, in that 1500m, and he said he | :50:10. | :50:14.
did not really pay much attention to it but it really did make a | :50:15. | :50:20.
difference. I think it has. Once the athletes are smelling that victory, | :50:21. | :50:25.
they are going for it. Come July, who knows what is going to happen? | :50:26. | :50:29.
Behind as it is the women's 60m. COMMENTATOR: We are coming out to | :50:30. | :50:40.
the shorter sprints. Asher Philip goes on the outside for Great | :50:41. | :50:45.
Britain. But the American Barbara Pier may well be the woman to beat. | :50:46. | :50:54.
Kathryn 's Christie for Scotland -- Kathryn Christie for Scotland and | :50:55. | :51:02.
Aleen Bailey for the Commonwealth. Barbara Pier ran 10.85 last year but | :51:03. | :51:11.
still could not get in the US relay team in Moscow, such is their | :51:12. | :51:15.
strength and depth. Kathryn Christie earlier ran in eight of 150m. | :51:16. | :51:21.
Scottish sprint champion two years ago. Aged just 17. Aleen Bailey from | :51:22. | :51:29.
Jamaica. Olympic gold medallist and world gold medallist in the Jamaican | :51:30. | :51:35.
relay team back in 2004, and then the World Championships in 2009. And | :51:36. | :51:41.
Asher Philip, UK champion last year, great time in Sheffield with 7.15. | :51:42. | :51:49.
She may need something close to that again, if Barbara Pier is on form. | :51:50. | :51:57.
Great Britain need a good result to get closer to the top two, the | :51:58. | :52:07.
United States and the Commonwealth are heading away in the team | :52:08. | :52:08.
competition at the moment. Barbara Pierre, Kathryn Christie, | :52:09. | :52:25.
Aleen Bailey and Asher Philip for the Great Britain. | :52:26. | :52:39.
Philip has taken it well, and then Bailey perhaps coming second ahead | :52:40. | :52:49.
of PF. But in the end some distance to spare for Asher Philip. -- Bailey | :52:50. | :53:03.
perhaps coming second ahead of tarmac to. COLIN JACKSON: I am | :53:04. | :53:13.
track-side here and I could see exactly what was happening. Asher | :53:14. | :53:19.
Phillips drove hard for the first 10m. She will have seen Barbara | :53:20. | :53:24.
Pierre in her peripheral vision but she did not let it faze her. Last | :53:25. | :53:28.
year it was in doors when she really announced herself with that | :53:29. | :53:33.
wonderful time of 7.15, which actually placed her third on the | :53:34. | :53:37.
all-time list. Fantastic performance. But now in the season | :53:38. | :53:42.
of 2014, she is getting into her groove nicely. She has worked hard | :53:43. | :53:51.
this winter. I look forward to her perhaps attacking the personal best | :53:52. | :53:58.
of 7.15. That victory was needed. It was. It has taken a while but it was | :53:59. | :54:02.
the first victory on the track for the Great Britain team. For her | :54:03. | :54:10.
first outing of the year, weaving her time in at 7.25. But very | :54:11. | :54:16.
valuable win for Great Britain ahead of Aleen Bailey. | :54:17. | :54:21.
The first time that came up was not accurate, seven point 30. But the | :54:22. | :54:35.
correct time, 7.25. How pleased are you? Quite pleased. Do you want to | :54:36. | :54:41.
take part in the World Championships in Poland? Yes. I will pack my | :54:42. | :54:47.
suitcase for a holiday and I would like to go. We know that is only a | :54:48. | :54:53.
joke because year on year you were growing in stature. You have the | :54:54. | :54:58.
European Championships this year, the Commonwealth Games as well. | :54:59. | :55:04.
Definitely. I am going to go for both this year. Hopefully I will be | :55:05. | :55:09.
injury -free and have a fantastic year. Good luck. | :55:10. | :55:15.
COMMENTATOR: Asher Philip, winner at 7.25. The tournament in Poland will | :55:16. | :55:25.
be no holiday. She has now got to run the four x 400m as she is a late | :55:26. | :55:36.
replacement there for Regina George. Let's see how that water -- alters | :55:37. | :55:44.
things in the overall standings. Great Britain have an outside | :55:45. | :55:49.
chance, if my maths are correct. Scotland with those three victories | :55:50. | :55:51.
but down in fourth place. This could be one of the crucial | :55:52. | :56:04.
events. JJ Jegede in the long jump, second round. He has produced his | :56:05. | :56:11.
best when it matters most. It is Chris Tomlinson in the lead at the | :56:12. | :56:17.
moment, 7.56. So no great distances for the time being, but victory is | :56:18. | :56:23.
what is all-important. JJ Jegede, who has made very good improvements | :56:24. | :56:27.
over the last couple of years, twice the English champion, and he has | :56:28. | :56:32.
produced an outdoor best of 8.11 metres. There is his coach, Peter | :56:33. | :56:39.
Stanley. And 7.69, a new stadium record here in Scotland, and he is | :56:40. | :56:41.
in first place. Australia leads the all-time medals | :56:42. | :56:53.
table with a staggering 803 gold medals. Sally Pearson is set to | :56:54. | :56:59.
shine once more. The now retired Canadian diver is the most | :57:00. | :57:06.
successful Commonwealth athlete of all time, with nine gold medals | :57:07. | :57:12.
between 1998 and 2010. With 70 nations competing, Gambia and | :57:13. | :57:18.
Norfolk Islands have the lowest places with just one bronze medal | :57:19. | :57:19.
each. No great Rutherford as he has a | :57:20. | :57:28.
slight niggle, which he says, though, will not stop him competing | :57:29. | :57:36.
in Birmingham. He went on that amazing Saturday in 2012. Sometimes | :57:37. | :57:41.
you forget the weight of the gold medal and how much it affects | :57:42. | :57:46.
people. We saw how difficult the season was for him last year, to the | :57:47. | :57:53.
fit -- just the fitness and the health and changing coaches. And he | :57:54. | :57:59.
gambled in Moscow, Colin, he had an injury. He is fragile but it all | :58:00. | :58:06.
came together. He gambled and went and it did not pay off. -- he hoped | :58:07. | :58:15.
it would all come together. He said that his hamstring was giving him a | :58:16. | :58:21.
little bit of grief but he was sure he would be fit to the best of his | :58:22. | :58:25.
abilities in Moscow. It was a torrid time for him and you can imagine how | :58:26. | :58:30.
difficult it must be if you are the Olympic champion and you cannot | :58:31. | :58:33.
carry that mantle because of injury all the time. Let's be honest, it | :58:34. | :58:38.
was a shock that he won that title. He went into 2012 with the | :58:39. | :58:44.
possibility of winning, but a possibility is one thing and doing | :58:45. | :58:51.
it is another. I just think Greg seemed to want to prove himself. But | :58:52. | :58:57.
he does deserve that title. If you are defined by the decisions you | :58:58. | :59:04.
will make... I am not sure if Greg has managed himself very well | :59:05. | :59:07.
through it the stage after the gold medal but it is a new season, he | :59:08. | :59:12.
said he will concentrate on sprinting as well, I am not sure | :59:13. | :59:17.
with the fragile body, the hamstring injuries he has had, but he needs to | :59:18. | :59:21.
get back into jumping and jumping well a game. Behind us are the | :59:22. | :59:37.
athletes warming up for the 60m. The athlete from Scotland ran here last | :59:38. | :59:40.
year without her guide because he had an injury. Imagine when your | :59:41. | :59:47.
guide pulls a hamstring and he is your eyes, the person who is going | :59:48. | :59:52.
to guide you through! But she went out there and competed again and | :59:53. | :59:57.
that was a gallant thing to do. Paul Dickenson is watching. | :59:58. | :00:02.
PAUL DICKENSON: There is Libby Clegg, the Scottish athlete, with | :00:03. | :00:10.
her guide runner. The great British sprinter, -- a son of the great | :00:11. | :00:18.
British sprinter. Libby Clegg, looking relaxed. 23 | :00:19. | :00:49.
years old, Paralympic silver medallist at 100m in 2008 and 2012. | :00:50. | :00:55.
To seems to get better and better when the big Championships come | :00:56. | :01:01.
around. But a servant Tracey Hinton has been to British athletics. 43 | :01:02. | :01:07.
years old now. She won Paralympic medals back in 1992. Then Selina | :01:08. | :01:22.
Litt. Representing the Commonwealth. Came third in the English | :01:23. | :01:26.
Championships a couple of years ago. Finally, Erin McBride of Liverpool | :01:27. | :01:29.
Harriers, representing Great Britain. | :01:30. | :01:38.
Whereas Tracey Hinton is totally blind, there is a degree of vision | :01:39. | :01:44.
that Erin McBride has, but that explains the classification she | :01:45. | :01:50.
has. T13, whereas Tracey Hinton is T11. The letter teacher stands for | :01:51. | :01:55.
track. Libby Clegg is bang in the middle on | :01:56. | :02:15.
T12. She has 5% of normal vision. One thing they have to remember is | :02:16. | :02:19.
that the athletes must cross the finish line ahead of the guide | :02:20. | :02:25.
runner. There is one athlete we have not mentioned, Tracey Hinton's died | :02:26. | :02:36.
runner -- guide runner. She starts as favourite. The guide runners are | :02:37. | :02:54.
strapped firmly to the athletes. Libby Clegg gets away well, being | :02:55. | :02:59.
chased down the straight by Erin McBride. Look at Libby Clegg! | :03:00. | :03:10.
Absolutely flying. If that is confirmed, it will be a massive | :03:11. | :03:21.
lifetime best. And Tracey Hinton, being guided by Stefan Hughes, her | :03:22. | :03:33.
guide runner. Libby Clegg just kept on going away. Erin McBride, | :03:34. | :03:39.
finishing strongly in second place. And then Selina Litt, just finishing | :03:40. | :03:47.
ahead of Tracey Hinton. Total precision and synchronicity as far | :03:48. | :03:54.
as these two athletes are concerned. Her guide runner is a very strong | :03:55. | :03:59.
and powerful runner himself. He could go faster. But they are in | :04:00. | :04:04.
perfect harmony, coming down the straight. A superb run by Libby | :04:05. | :04:19.
Clegg. Great time as well. Libby Clegg is the champion and if she | :04:20. | :04:23.
stays in this shape, by the time we get to Rio, who knows? She could | :04:24. | :04:27.
eventually finish on top of a world standard rostrum. Chris Tomlinson | :04:28. | :04:37.
need something special here. 7.56 is his best jump so far, followed by a | :04:38. | :04:45.
foul. That was better. That was close. JJ, as christened by his | :04:46. | :04:57.
mother. I can't announce his real name, unfortunately. But she | :04:58. | :05:02.
christened him JJ, and he has stayed that way ever since. That was bang | :05:03. | :05:13.
on the board by Tomlinson. Still not great distances. Hopefully, they | :05:14. | :05:18.
will come later this year. He takes the lead. | :05:19. | :05:44.
Let's have a look at the match score. It is very close at the top. | :05:45. | :06:13.
Next, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated race of the afternoon, | :06:14. | :06:21.
the men's 60m. Dwain Chambers against James Dasaolu, and what a | :06:22. | :06:38.
summer he had last year. Last year was a big year for me. I | :06:39. | :06:44.
won my first medal sub 10am so it was a very good year. This year, I | :06:45. | :06:50.
just want to keep progressing. So I am starting my season in Glasgow and | :06:51. | :06:54.
I can't wait to compete. It was last year at the European indoors when | :06:55. | :06:57.
you put a marker down for the season, winning a medal. Was that | :06:58. | :07:02.
how it felt at the time 's indoors represents a chance for me to act is | :07:03. | :07:07.
my start as a 100m runner. Last year, you reached that rarefied air | :07:08. | :07:13.
for a sprinter of sub ten seconds. I done it in the trials. It was really | :07:14. | :07:19.
good doing it in front of the British public and to produce it at | :07:20. | :07:25.
the World Championships was even bigger. I was against world-class | :07:26. | :07:35.
athletes in Moscow. Now I feel like I belong, because I have got sub | :07:36. | :07:40.
ten, which is the psychological barrier of a true world-class | :07:41. | :07:45.
athlete. So now I am a more confident person. It has been | :07:46. | :07:48.
documented that you have a new training partner in Adam Gemili. It | :07:49. | :07:55.
is good having two of the quickest guys in Britain training together | :07:56. | :08:00.
and pushing each other on. Looking beyond this weekend, are you looking | :08:01. | :08:05.
at medals this year as well as times? Of course. There is the | :08:06. | :08:10.
Commonwealth, the Europeans, the world indoors. At every competition, | :08:11. | :08:16.
I want to pick up medals. Colin, I think one of the moments of last | :08:17. | :08:21.
season was the semifinals in Birmingham, the trials. It took | :08:22. | :08:26.
everyone's breath away. We knew he was going to do something special, | :08:27. | :08:30.
because I couple of days before, he had run very well. So we were | :08:31. | :08:33.
expecting something phenomenal, but to go under ten seconds the way he | :08:34. | :08:39.
did and run that impressive 9.91, it excited everybody. We are looking | :08:40. | :08:44.
forward to him doing a had to get -- head to head against when Chambers. | :08:45. | :08:50.
Unfortunately, he had to pull out. But that really announced him not | :08:51. | :08:53.
just to the UK, but to every sprinter in the world. He pulled out | :08:54. | :08:58.
of the final in Birmingham and then pulled out of the Anniversary Games. | :08:59. | :09:04.
Has he got the head for it? Absolutely, we did wonder, but he | :09:05. | :09:08.
did not disappoint in Moscow. He was really impressive. This year might | :09:09. | :09:15.
it is about consistency. He needs to be on that circuit, racing a bit | :09:16. | :09:19.
more and not feeling intimidated. He belongs. You don't run under ten | :09:20. | :09:23.
seconds several times and then just back away. Get out there, show | :09:24. | :09:30.
people what you have got. Hope Lee, we will see a more confident James | :09:31. | :09:34.
Dasaolu this year, given what he achieved in Moscow. That will be | :09:35. | :09:39.
necessary. You have to remember, Adam Gemili had a fantastic year. He | :09:40. | :09:46.
ran under 20 seconds in the 200m. It is going to be all about | :09:47. | :09:50.
competition. Come the European Championships, it will be Great | :09:51. | :09:54.
Britain against France. We are hoping we can take the serious | :09:55. | :09:58.
positions. And a word on Dwain Chambers? I never like to write | :09:59. | :10:06.
athletes. But there is a new breed coming through. British sprinting is | :10:07. | :10:13.
in a healthy position. Tremendous anticipation for this. Let's see how | :10:14. | :10:18.
it turns out. Yes, as ever, the men's 60m is full of drama and | :10:19. | :10:25.
intrigue. And most questions are positive | :10:26. | :10:26.
about James Dasaolu. Chambers is still the British | :10:27. | :10:50.
record-holder for this distance indoors. Dasaolu, like many of our | :10:51. | :11:03.
sprinters has been in South Africa. He has the same coat as Adam | :11:04. | :11:11.
Gemili. He has been working on his start in particular during the | :11:12. | :11:15.
winter months. Let's see if there is any evidence of that improving here. | :11:16. | :11:22.
Jeff Porter ran the 60m hurdles earlier and just dipped the British | :11:23. | :11:31.
team captain to the victory. And then Stephen Dunlop. | :11:32. | :11:49.
Silver medal for Dasaolu at the European indoors last year, and that | :11:50. | :11:57.
was a sign of what was to come in the summer. The guys have obviously | :11:58. | :12:07.
been discussing that. Let's see how they can begin 2014. | :12:08. | :12:23.
Good start from Chambers. But look how quickly Dasaolu is out. Dasaolu | :12:24. | :12:41.
storms away. Apologies, I had problems with my microphone. They | :12:42. | :12:52.
have had a few problems with the clock, so they are hesitating. But | :12:53. | :12:57.
the real difference for me was that Chambers still has that expressive | :12:58. | :13:01.
ability out of the box, but his pick-up after that was really | :13:02. | :13:05.
impressive. We will wait to see full confirmation of the time. It is | :13:06. | :13:12.
6.50. Ignore the stadium clock. Colin, that is a new stadium | :13:13. | :13:19.
record, just outside Dasaolu's personal best. A phenomenal opening | :13:20. | :13:23.
performance. Dwain Chambers reacted so well out of the blocks, but James | :13:24. | :13:29.
got him very quickly. Within five or six metres, he was equal with when | :13:30. | :13:40.
Chambers -- Dwain Chambers. He is so relaxed. You can see that he enjoys | :13:41. | :13:51.
it. Dwain reacts well, but it is not good enough. James gets that head | :13:52. | :13:58.
upright. Then he can bring those knees nice and high, pump the | :13:59. | :14:02.
shoulders, keep relaxed all the way. Expels a bit of air, looks at the | :14:03. | :14:08.
clock. I think he will be disappointed when he saw the clock, | :14:09. | :14:12.
because he would have known it was quicker than that and we do also. | :14:13. | :14:18.
That is the fastest in the world this year over 60m. Of course, it is | :14:19. | :14:19.
very early. The Commonwealth Select team are | :14:20. | :14:37.
doing very well. You have lived in -- lead Great | :14:38. | :15:01.
Britain and Northern Ireland into its second in the standings at the | :15:02. | :15:06.
moment. It is a fantastic way for me to start my season. It is obviously | :15:07. | :15:14.
a team event and I am happy to get the team to second place. Some | :15:15. | :15:19.
confusion over the times when you crossed the line. You were probably | :15:20. | :15:22.
disappointed when you saw the times, but then I told you the | :15:23. | :15:32.
correct time of 6.5. Yes, it was a meet a difference. I was really | :15:33. | :15:37.
happy with it. Do you feel like a different athlete this year, with | :15:38. | :15:40.
what you were able to achieve last year with the sub -10 second ones? | :15:41. | :15:50.
Yes. I am ready to go again after injury. This is just building on | :15:51. | :16:01.
that, really. Will we see you in Poland for the World Championships? | :16:02. | :16:05.
Yes, the trials in Birmingham and then Poland. Well done. Thank you. | :16:06. | :16:13.
COMMENTATOR: It certainly has been a great tussle in this long jump | :16:14. | :16:20.
between Tomlinson and JJ Jegede. That looks very good indeed. He's | :16:21. | :16:28.
getting on towards eight metres. JJ Jegede, on 7.69 in round two, seven | :16:29. | :16:34.
.48 in round three, equalling his first round jump. But that is long. | :16:35. | :16:42.
JJ Jegede, there, surely he has gone into the lead, big-time. A little | :16:43. | :16:49.
bit of balance. Since he has gone over to Peter Stanley as his coach, | :16:50. | :16:54.
he really has improved. It will not be long before he is well over eight | :16:55. | :17:01.
metres. Where is it? 7.93! Another stadium record, by a big margin. He | :17:02. | :17:04.
is in the lead. Now it is time for the Sainsbury's | :17:05. | :17:16.
performance of the day. It is between Libby Muir, and at the end | :17:17. | :17:26.
James Dasaolu. Paula, you first. I will go with Laura. She is a world | :17:27. | :17:35.
lead and to read a world leader, a Scottish record and then so | :17:36. | :17:37.
confidently win the race bodes really well for the server and she | :17:38. | :17:45.
ran brilliantly. Denise. By heart says Laura Muir but at the same time | :17:46. | :17:49.
James Dasaolu has also run a worldly, with the 6.50. It is | :17:50. | :18:01.
impressive. It is not easy! Maybe James. Laura, definitely. CJ? I will | :18:02. | :18:11.
be totally honest, I happen to agree with Paula. I will go for Laura | :18:12. | :18:16.
Muir. It was a fantastic performance from her. She was under pressure | :18:17. | :18:22.
because there was expectation around. Marilyn Okoro was in the | :18:23. | :18:31.
race, and she came out and delivered under pressure. So to shatter her | :18:32. | :18:35.
personal best, make it a Scottish record on home turf is a | :18:36. | :18:44.
crowd-pleaser. She looks in great shape for the summer. She is a lot | :18:45. | :18:49.
more confident in herself. She has really put the working and is | :18:50. | :18:54.
strong. And this will be her strongest event, 800m? She can run a | :18:55. | :19:04.
very fast 1500m as well. She may even run both. The women's four | :19:05. | :19:10.
point -- four x 400m relay race. The capacity crowd awaiting for what | :19:11. | :19:29.
may be two decisive relays, a very strong Commonwealth team to come in | :19:30. | :19:38.
the men's event. But it is the women's four x 400m relay race | :19:39. | :19:45.
first. Some interesting characters, some big talents involved here as | :19:46. | :19:53.
well and in the United States -- the United States will be hard to beat. | :19:54. | :20:04.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland are on the outside. | :20:05. | :20:16.
A world indoor relay silver medallist back in 2006 starts for | :20:17. | :20:27.
United States. McCorory and Hastings are on the last two legs. Eilidh | :20:28. | :20:32.
Child will feel she has a bit to make up for after the disappointing | :20:33. | :20:38.
400m. She went out very strongly in that one and then failed towards the | :20:39. | :20:45.
end, the Scottish team captain. Aleen Bailey is leading of the | :20:46. | :20:52.
Commonwealth Select. Regina George, the Nigerian, had to pull out. Emily | :20:53. | :21:04.
Diamond will bring them home. There is Megan for Great Britain. She did | :21:05. | :21:13.
well in Moscow. There is Laura Wake and Victoria O horror -- Ohuruogu | :21:14. | :21:24.
will bring them home. So United States, Scotland, come and will | :21:25. | :21:28.
select, Great Britain and Northern Ireland. -- Commonwealth Select. | :21:29. | :21:38.
Great Britain looking to take that little nibble into the Commonwealth | :21:39. | :21:39.
in this penultimate track event. Away they go, and Monica Hart growth | :21:40. | :21:56.
for the United States is already striding past Eilidh Child. Biding | :21:57. | :22:05.
her time. Eilidh Child a long way back at the moment but a strong | :22:06. | :22:15.
first leg. Two locks, of course. -- two laps. | :22:16. | :22:22.
There is a bit of pride at stake here as well. Eilidh Child had a | :22:23. | :22:33.
disappointing race last year but this is more like it. She will give | :22:34. | :22:43.
Scotland the advantage. The Americans are undoubtedly the | :22:44. | :22:47.
favourites. The youngster here, Mary Hendry, is 17 years of age. What a | :22:48. | :22:55.
contrast that was, Eilidh Child, from the individual to the relay. | :22:56. | :22:59.
She has learned well. Handing onto Diane Ramsay. A strong finish from | :23:00. | :23:12.
Cassandra Tate. The second lap. She is flying at the moment. In the | :23:13. | :23:20.
United States we have McCorory and Hastings to come. The two finalists | :23:21. | :23:24.
from the World Championships, outdoors in Moscow. They will be | :23:25. | :23:31.
hard to beat. But a good result from Kelly Massey. The third leg. The | :23:32. | :23:43.
Americans, he should have been doing much better at languishing... A big | :23:44. | :23:52.
gap is starting to develop here. Great Britain are taking it away, | :23:53. | :23:57.
pushing on hard. Victoria Ohuruogu ran so well individually. This | :23:58. | :24:05.
really stands up for Great Britain's relay prospects. The | :24:06. | :24:14.
Americans are absolutely nowhere. A very surprisingly performers from | :24:15. | :24:20.
the Americans. McCorory being left behind at the moment. Laura Wake is | :24:21. | :24:29.
going to hand over to Victoria Ohuruogu. Zoe Clark is running for | :24:30. | :24:37.
Scotland and Claire Gibson for the Commonwealth. Victoria Ohuruogu has | :24:38. | :24:48.
believed at the moment. She finishes, perhaps a bit like her | :24:49. | :24:51.
older sister, very strongly in the individual. She hits the final lap. | :24:52. | :24:59.
She is still giving Gemma Nicholl a run. The crowd lifts the noise to | :25:00. | :25:08.
try to bring Gemma Nicholl a bit closer to Victoria Ohuruogu. But it | :25:09. | :25:14.
was a big lead that Ohuruogu had coming into this final leg. She will | :25:15. | :25:18.
hold on. She is a strong, talented athlete. She brings Great Britain | :25:19. | :25:29.
home. A very valuable victory. Commonwealth will finish fourth. | :25:30. | :25:32.
That will make a big change to the overall standings, but a good | :25:33. | :25:35.
victory for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Ohuruogu bringing | :25:36. | :25:46.
the team home. There are celebrations all around. Laura Wake | :25:47. | :25:57.
run a very good leg, and good all the way through for Great Britain | :25:58. | :26:01.
and Northern Ireland. Denise Lewis watching that looked down their, and | :26:02. | :26:09.
a controlled performance from the Great Britain squad? Much though | :26:10. | :26:17.
Gemma Nicholl tried for Scotland to get closer, she ran a very good leg | :26:18. | :26:22.
on the final leg, unable to get their past Ohuruogu. I wonder if | :26:23. | :26:27.
there might be further success for the Ohuruogu family in the future. | :26:28. | :26:36.
Victoria Ohuruogu drinking and impressive victory for Great | :26:37. | :26:42.
Britain. I am surprised that McCorory and Hastings for the United | :26:43. | :26:45.
States on the third and fourth leg, the cream of this field, where | :26:46. | :26:50.
really unable to do anything. McCorory on leg three looked very | :26:51. | :26:57.
out of sorts. The victory led by the great British got. A precious | :26:58. | :27:02.
victory in terms of the overall standings. There we are, 3: 33.49. | :27:03. | :27:14.
They were leading coming into this event in the overall standings, so | :27:15. | :27:21.
we will find out how that affects the overall standings. | :27:22. | :27:29.
It is the last round now for Ron Taylor of the USA in the long jump | :27:30. | :27:37.
and that looks good. He shakes his head a little bit, so... 7.794 | :27:38. | :27:48.
Taylor. He goes into second place. And Tomlinson responds with 7.75. So | :27:49. | :27:54.
he finishes in the third. A fine victory for JJ Jegede for the | :27:55. | :27:58.
Commonwealth. And Taylor in second place, 7.79. Tomlinson, | :27:59. | :28:04.
unfortunately for him, finishing in third, defy -- despite it is a | :28:05. | :28:09.
stadium best. As far as the match standings are | :28:10. | :28:23.
concerned, it is very close indeed. The Commonwealth are certainly up | :28:24. | :28:30.
there. They are over 60 points now. Great Britain and Northern Ireland | :28:31. | :28:34.
are still ahead of the USA, in third place, and Scotland in fourth. But | :28:35. | :28:38.
it is the Commonwealth leading the way at the moment. | :28:39. | :28:47.
Lake Placid entertained the miracle on ice. Sarajevo hosted Bolero. Oslo | :28:48. | :29:06.
boasts the great ski jump. Between 1956 and 1988, the Soviet Union | :29:07. | :29:10.
dominated the Winter games. But perhaps the most extraordinary tale | :29:11. | :29:14.
of the Winter Olympics is how we, from this small island with very | :29:15. | :29:17.
little snow, brought downhill skiing to the world. To tell that story, I | :29:18. | :29:24.
have come here to the Alps, where British pioneers helped to shape | :29:25. | :29:25.
modern Winter sports. But And the Winter Olympics proper | :29:26. | :29:45.
starts on the 7th of February with the opening ceremony. | :29:46. | :29:58.
An Neil Black, former director of UK Athletics, is alongside me. | :29:59. | :30:06.
It has been a great afternoon. A couple of things have caught your | :30:07. | :30:12.
eye? In the last few events, the sprints were looking really good. An | :30:13. | :30:20.
interesting year for UK athletics, because you have a Commonwealth | :30:21. | :30:25.
Games with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. How do you | :30:26. | :30:28.
interact with everyone? We just embrace the whole concept. The whole | :30:29. | :30:34.
plan is working with the home countries. We are working with the | :30:35. | :30:41.
coaches and what their plans are as we progress towards 2017. In terms | :30:42. | :30:50.
of the priorities for athletes, what is more important, European | :30:51. | :30:53.
Championships after the Commonwealth Games, or the Commonwealth Games in | :30:54. | :30:58.
the UK? It is different for different people. For some people, | :30:59. | :31:04.
the Commonwealth Games are without question the best. For others, it is | :31:05. | :31:11.
the European Championships. We are sticking with each individual | :31:12. | :31:14.
athlete and coach, working that out and making sure they get the right | :31:15. | :31:19.
focus. Thanks very much. Short, but sweet. | :31:20. | :31:24.
We will talk to you lot more. Now back to the track for the men's 4 x | :31:25. | :31:27.
400 metre relay. Talking about the summer, there is the mascot for the | :31:28. | :31:37.
Commonwealth Games. If I had time, I would let Andrew | :31:38. | :31:40.
tell you the full history of that. I have interviewed him! I bet that was | :31:41. | :31:44.
a meeting of minds. Talking of Scotland and the Winter | :31:45. | :32:18.
Olympics, don't forget the curling. We were having a conversation about | :32:19. | :32:24.
that earlier. Lots of prospects at the Winter Olympics. | :32:25. | :32:35.
I suspect we will be looking at the Commonwealth team here. Scotland | :32:36. | :32:49.
have Jamie Bowie, then number one man, leading them off. Pinder will | :32:50. | :33:04.
head off this eHarmony and team. -- this team from the Bahamas. They | :33:05. | :33:11.
have got M3 macro, crisp brown -- Pinder and crisp round. Great | :33:12. | :33:15.
Britain. The Americans have had some late | :33:16. | :33:28.
changes, to say the least. We think Ronald Taylor, who has just finished | :33:29. | :33:32.
second in the non-dom, will go on the second leg. -- he has just | :33:33. | :33:42.
finished second in the long jump. How quickly can this team go from | :33:43. | :33:45.
the Bahamas, representing the Commonwealth Select team? They have | :33:46. | :33:53.
already won the match. Good, strong Great Britain squad, though. | :33:54. | :34:08.
The world record is held by the USA. So, it is pretty even so far. Pinder | :34:09. | :34:24.
going pretty well. Jamie Bowie trying to stay in there. Pinder is | :34:25. | :34:37.
controlling this. Not really attacking it that much. Luke Lennon | :34:38. | :34:43.
Ford is holding the inside line here. But we try to take advantage, | :34:44. | :34:50.
but the Bahamas will lead this into the second leg. The USA are leaving | :34:51. | :35:02.
them with a lot to do. The USA have a huge amount to do, but Great | :35:03. | :35:08.
Britain are in front. The tall figure of Richard ahead of crisp | :35:09. | :35:12.
round, who was impressive in the individual event earlier. Brown is | :35:13. | :35:29.
looking easy. It will be very hard against this Commonwealth team which | :35:30. | :35:39.
is very strong. Richard Buck at a cross crisp round, but Brown did not | :35:40. | :35:42.
panic. Conrad Williams, chasing down. | :35:43. | :36:07.
Scotland are still in contention. This may well be a great race. What | :36:08. | :36:12.
a great history Britain have in the 4 x 400. Conrad Williams is not | :36:13. | :36:18.
giving up the chase. Anthony Young still hanging in for Scotland, but | :36:19. | :36:21.
it is the Bahamas Commonwealth team out in front, with Great Britain in | :36:22. | :36:27.
second place. The United States, strangely, are a long way back. The | :36:28. | :36:35.
Bahamian team are ahead of Great Britain. Lavigne is in control here, | :36:36. | :36:50.
not panicking. As he got the strength? He ran well in the | :36:51. | :36:57.
individual event. He is looking good down here. These two are well clear | :36:58. | :37:05.
of the rest. Can Britain finish with a victory here? Levi Ms looking | :37:06. | :37:15.
good. -- Levine. It is a win for the Great Britain Quartet! Solid | :37:16. | :37:23.
performance. Commonwealth second, Scotland's third, USA four. That was | :37:24. | :37:30.
a really well judged performance. All eyes might have been on that | :37:31. | :37:34.
very strong quartet representing the Commonwealth team. Lennon Ford have | :37:35. | :37:40.
a good first leg. Richard Buck was aggressive ahead of Chris Brown. | :37:41. | :37:45.
Always kept them in contact. Good third leg from Conrad Williams, and | :37:46. | :37:52.
Nigel Lavigne bringing the baton home, beating the Olympic | :37:53. | :37:56.
champions, albeit indoors in January, but that is a big scalp. | :37:57. | :38:12.
Very impressive, the way Levine sensed a sluggish start and took | :38:13. | :38:17.
control and imposed himself and still had enough to kick again | :38:18. | :38:28.
towards the end of the race. You could see his wild celebrations at | :38:29. | :38:46.
the end. A fairly comfortable win. Then the celebrations could begin. | :38:47. | :38:52.
Well, Great Britain are finishing on a high. | :38:53. | :39:21.
So, Britain finishes with a victory. We are waiting for official | :39:22. | :39:28.
confirmation of who has won the Sainsbury's as indoor challenge. | :39:29. | :39:30.
Let's reflect now on this afternoon. Paula, it is fair to say | :39:31. | :39:35.
that the Scottish team has been a revelation. Yes, they performed well | :39:36. | :39:41.
today. It is a really good crowd here and they are getting behind | :39:42. | :39:45.
them. The build-up is already starting. People are anticipating | :39:46. | :39:48.
what will happen in the summer, and it is looking good for the Scottish | :39:49. | :39:53.
team. Great wins for Laura Muir and Chris O'Hare. Denise, you perhaps | :39:54. | :40:01.
feared for Scotland, but it has been the opposite. Chris O'Hare was | :40:02. | :40:08.
fantastic. He showed some signs of flair last year, so building on | :40:09. | :40:16.
that, he represented so well today. It is about growing teams and | :40:17. | :40:21.
getting the depth and breadth they will need over the next few months. | :40:22. | :40:28.
One of four individual wins. There was also the 600m, and Libby Clegg. | :40:29. | :40:35.
I guess the Scottish team will take confidence from this. They will | :40:36. | :40:41.
smile. As you said, I thought at the beginning that they thought there | :40:42. | :40:46.
was a risk of an individual team medal, but it will be an opportunity | :40:47. | :40:51.
for the team to grow. When you get performances like that, you get | :40:52. | :40:55.
belief. This team will believe in themselves. They felt the audience | :40:56. | :41:01.
supporting them, and they will pass that on. Their friends, families and | :41:02. | :41:05.
colleagues will have seen their performance today and been inspired. | :41:06. | :41:09.
It will be hard to beat the Scottish team in some events at the | :41:10. | :41:13.
Commonwealth Games. We can get the confirmation of the match score now. | :41:14. | :41:17.
It is a victory for the Commonwealth Select. | :41:18. | :41:26.
Scotland are fourth, but that does not tell the story. Colin, we talked | :41:27. | :41:35.
about James Dasaolu. He ran and credibly quick time. It was a | :41:36. | :41:41.
sensational time. When we looked at the clock, we thought his | :41:42. | :41:45.
performance was surely better than that. He executed a perfect 60m. He | :41:46. | :41:53.
is only going to get better. It is filling him with confidence, and | :41:54. | :41:56.
that is what we want to see. Thanks very much to all of you. The next | :41:57. | :42:02.
athletics on the BBC will be from Birmingham on the 17th of February. | :42:03. | :42:07.
We hope Greg Rutherford will be coming back from injury. That is it | :42:08. | :42:16.
from Glasgow for 2014. The athletics season is up and running. There is | :42:17. | :42:19.
plenty more to look forward to, including of course the Commonwealth | :42:20. | :42:22.
Games. Until next time, goodbye. | :42:23. | :42:27. |
