Highlights - Men's Final Australian Open Tennis

Andy Murray has yet to win the Australian Open. He has lost in four

finals. The last three to one man, Novak Djokovic.

Four finals, four times, not to be. He will take encouragement from

victories over Djokovic in the finals of the US Open and Wimbledon.

It is over! Andy Murray is the Wimbledon champion!

So as the spectre of the serve rises once more, well Andy finally

overcome his nemesis and exercise his demon and down under? -- the

Serbian player. Although being a four time finalist

is impressive for these players, it is about winning titles so now on

the fifth time of asking, but Andy win the title that has proved so

elusive? By contrast, this is a happy hunting ground for the World

Number 1. A win today takes him level with great -- Roy Emerson 16

Australian Open crowns and alongside Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver with a

total of 11 grand slam titles. They have been friendly growing up but

now they are intense rivals at the top of their sport. They have met in

five grand slam finals already, Murray was victorious in the US Open

in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 but it has been all Djokovic in Melbourne

including last year, so Djokovic leads the grand slam final

head-to-head 3-2. The build-up to this match could not have been more

different for the two, Djokovic dispatched Roger Federer in his semi

and had a couple of days off, Andy Murray was taken to five sets a day

later by Milos Raonic and was courtside to see his brother went to

Men's Doubles, with Bruno Soares. This was his straight grand slam

final forward Jamie and third time lucky. This is their third season

together and what a start beating the experienced Daniel Nestor and

Radek Stepanek. It was the second grand slam title of Jamie after

winning the Mixed Doubles and Wimbledon in 2007 and Andy showed

brotherly love, he was too nervous to watch courtside but came at the

end of the match to catch it on camera. His oldest brother's

greatest triumph. So with the family success story continue today? It is

the final we expected, Murray against Djokovic, they are playing

for the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. There have you encountered

between the two over the years and would this be another bruising

encounter? Djokovic has taken tennis to a new level and tennis's greatest

challenge is to beat him over five sets. The challenge facing Murray.

Djokovic one the first 6-1, Andy Murray needed to dig deep and find a

way in. In the second set, it is 1-1, Murray to serve, the

commentators John Lloyd and Andrew Castle.

Slipping up a huge amount of support you for Andy Murray. It is a fifth

Australian Open final for him. He is level with Pete Sampras and Rafael

Nadal, no less, 145 match wins at the Australian Open, without winning

it yet. -- on 45. Well played, Murray. Djokovic is not

used to being countered to this degree Simon did a good job of it.

That was back in round four, they played 16. To the limits, or hours

56 minutes. Simon succumbing in the fifth set, 101 fours arose Djokovic.

four Djokovic. Simon was superb. In that match, Simon, it was

interesting category. The majority of his ground strokes were down the

middle with no pace. It was an interesting tactical performance

from Simon. I suppose he figured he has had no success against Djokovic,

try something different, and it almost worked. The famous Muhammad

Ali tactics. Give him nothing and, out and perhaps attacked a little

bit at the end. Simon one of the most intelligent players out there,

as is this man. It is unreal, at 15-30, he a

backhand deep, baseline, hard, high bouncing. And that second serve was

much harder than Murray bouncing. And that second serve was

It was good but it came back at him and put him straight under the

pressure and that is the problem. Once he misses his first serve, you

feel Murray is almost not going to miss a point, and he is serving

well. He will

nullified the serve again and they were into a baseline rally and you

worry every time you go into one of those with Djokovic. Ten or 11 more

of those and that will be fine! For British fans.

This return again. It is amazing. Another great serve. It can go

unnoticed. If you hit a first serve like that at your club, they put

unnoticed. If you hit a first serve in the first team and make you

Captain! It was great. Against anybody else, he would have been on

the attack. But against Djokovic, right away, he is defending the

game. It is just brittle. No wait! I don't believe that! That

did not happen! -- no way. That is just too good. Do you stop those

after the return and see where Djokovic is? Yes, you go, this is

nine out of ten, this is Murray's point. There is this blue and white

flash. Look at the right leg, the left leg sliding. Andy was off and

running. Oh, dear! Well done. I still cannot get over a backhand!

Be careful here. Starting to get a little bit negative with some of his

comments. Yes, it is? That is a result of what

happened in the previous point on that side. You feel like you have to

play an Olympic point every time to get the ball past him. I take your

point about Murray. Djokovic is hearing this and he is loving this.

He said, well done. He gave the fist bump. Sarcastic. Djokovic is aware

of it. Do not give him any bonuses. He did well. I thought that point

was over. He is hanging in. Still early in a five set match. The third

game of the second set, but you feel there is a Mini battle going on here

which would suggest it is the heart of the match in some ways. Murray

has to hang in at this point, he cannot get two sets down, surely.

Doing well this set. That is the sarcastic smile when he

misses a ball. It is negative energy.

I don't see him hit too many overheads. Andy Murray. But very, to

bowl, this was high, it was coming down straight. Putting his weight

forward -- but very comfortable. Can you believe these guys? This is

so hard on Murray. He is number two in the world, a US Open champion, a

Wimbledon champion, he won the Davis Cup for Great Britain, an Olympic

Gold medal. And yet Djokovic is just at the moment, in this match, he is

superior. Yes, no questions he is having to defend. A time violation,

a code violation? Time. See? All right. In the meantime,

break point. He is having to serve unbelievably

well in the game just to hang in. I think that is about four serves that

could not be returned and he is still only on deuce. The sort of

game where if Djokovic does not break, it is still valuable.

Absolutely. This is straining for Murray. But a big boost if Murray

can hold, psychologically. ( -- a potential momentum change, we will

see. Now Murray has a game plan, get out

of it now. Very good second serve he hit. That is a brave second serve,

he has lost the first set 6-1. Deuce, he went for that second serve

just inside the line much harder than he used to serve it. He still

has the confidence to go for it, which is a good sign. Amazing cold.

-- hold. The first set, 30 minutes. Three games the second set, 23

minutes. That was over ten minutes. 2-1, second set, decent final

developing here. Djokovic the top dog, defending

champion, serving. 1-2, second set. Now, after holding, after ten long

tough minutes in the previous game, Murray has got something on his side

now, court momentum. It is important in tennis. A good start to the game.

He tried to take it early, the tax fixed very clear. -- tactics. He

could have had 0- 34 first time. Sticking with it, though. Yes, he is

not still believing in what he is doing out here.

They of out entirely problem here with the stop -- Djokovic got

himself out of a problem here with the serve. At the French Open, he

served 16, seven double faults a match and you looked at him and you

really thought, is he ever going to get this serve right? It was the

worst serve, it was terrible. He got backhand neck his serve is a weapon.

-- got back, and now that is a weapon. Every time he got to a

-- got back, and now that is a second set, but he would serve a

second double faults. It was more of the old Axbridge position which

seems to have gone out of favour, and the elbow and getting it down.

It was terrible. He did not have it. He threw the thing up and it was

literally a straight arm, very strange.

A number of people have been working with him over the years, Djokovic.

Todd Martin, Mark Woodforde, others. Marion, now Boris Becker. Boris

Becker has taken the lead role, it would appear.

The worst overhead from Novak Djokovic, but great scrambling!

Murray holds Wonderful. What a point! Djokovic,

absolutely no way he should have won that rally. Three times, was put in

almost impossible situations by Murray and just got the ball with

full stretch back into play deep and eventually Murray wakes down. It is

just awesome! How do you put the ball away against him? Almost

impossible. What a return of serve! He is not

changing that tactic, he is going after the second serve whenever he

gets a chance, he takes that ball on not very successful in the first set

but getting more success in the second and this was a very good

second serve. Murray just taking it so early.

Yes. We are seeing the best of Murray now. Just a little tetchy. He

is under pressure for the first time in this match, Djokovic. This is

interesting, he was two set up against Federer before everything

went the way of Roger and the standard belt but now Murray is very

much in this game and I would like to know who is counting

these unforced errors. It is difficult to call an unforced error

like that shooting through the surface at 100 mph!

A real head-to-head this. This is not helping. No. These taxing

rallies these two play that other players gasp at, being played under

clear skies. 17 Celsius. So the weather is on their side for this

evening final in Melbourne. Still demanding but it is not like it is

40 Celsius. The pace, so much of that in that

rally from Murray. A huge backhand, a couple of big forehand shots

putting the pressure on Djokovic. A good passage of play here from

Murray. Great hold in the last game are pushing Djokovic on his serve as

well. He had it! He had it. A well played

point. Just the execution letting him down at the end. This is what he

was doing in set three and four in the semifinal of the French Open

last year. He was dictating and hitting winners past Djokovic. He

has got the power to get through him.

Did you see that slice from Murray? One inch away from the ground. A

vicious slice. The last two games is what I thought we would see this

entire match. We did not see it in the first set because the game of

Djokovic was a different planet and Murray was below his best go -- and

going for it too much. This is what you expect to see time and time

again, they negate each other. So similar.

Get in. No, a floater. The third game of this second set and Murray

is holding after ten minutes, that was awesome to watch. You can just

see him breathing out. No other player makes him brief like that

other than Murray. With Federer, he has shorter rallies. Nadal used to.

Yes, but since then, nobody makes him move like Murray does.

It is a wonderful final here in Melbourne in the second set. What a

serve and what a hold of serve. Similar in some regards to the game

Murray held to go to-1, in terms of it being a fight. And he has got

through the fire and he will take a new rackets now as the conditions

get cooler. The tennis ball is changed after seven and nine so two

more games with the old balls. I do not know why he has gone for a new

racket. He could not have not know why he has gone for a new

miscounted, could he? I do wonder! There are three doubles and Djokovic

hasn't had any but I don't mind that stat, it is when you serve

obviously, because he is going for a lot more on his second serve and it

is a better tactic. If he slows the second serve up, you will get

crushed on too many points. He is serving well today. It is a

lovely extension, down the left side and he gets up pretty well. Huge leg

strength into the ball, the second serve can be a little short but how

critical do you want to be? That is awesome. He knows

or never, he has to win this set to come back from two

or never, he has to win this set to Djokovic in a Grand Slam final. It

may be impossible. You have to love the way Murray is striking, look at

the way he is playing the ball, eight foot inside the baseline.

That was just, in that rally, a case of Murray being run around for 12

shots straight and when he had the chance to pull the trigger, he was

slightly fatigued. Well that is an important break of

serve, it is now set for-3 and a break two. He has won ten of the

last 11 matches against Murray. He is the world number one, the

defending champion. And he is a hit. Murray is up against it today, he

needs to concentrate quick. That was a tough service game to lose from

Andy Murray. He played well as well. Djokovic at his best. Murray down a

set and 4-3 with a break. It is just a shock to see him make

and error, you don't expect it ever to happen. When he is playing like

this. That is his best backhand of the

match. Absolutely letting that Heveran kit swing through the ball,

he has two hit his way out of trouble. That is clear thinking. --

that heavy racket. It is just struggling a bit today

with the forehand. The backhand is always good. The forehand, and

awesome shot these days but just making a few too many errors on that

side, obviously trying to press the action. But that last one was a big

forehand to miss at 15-30. I thought he had not got away with

that and that drop volley, I thought it would bounce high enough for

Djokovic to do some damage but it actually died quite a bit there and

dropped reasonably low. I still thought Djokovic was going to make

it from this position. On a hot day, the ball would have bounced up

higher and perhaps Murray wouldn't have played that shot. His last

break point, his only one, first game of the match.

Yes, it is going to be challenged but I think he caught the line.

Djokovic looked pretty confident he had missed this. Yes, he did. It is

break point, he stepped in and played a wonderful point and he has

caught the outside edge and got the break. What a game and what a

comeback that was. CHUCKLES That is gutsy stuff. He took chances

in that game, he really did. That wasn't really a

in that game, he really did. That playing his level dropping in that

game, that was a case of Murray's level rising. He took the ball on,

very aggressive. Too much of the best sexy ever played was the French

Open semifinal last year. -- two of the best games he ever played.

Murray is pretty excited at this point, he is back in this set, 30-0

up on his own deal. They are just making the point that

somebody with an automatic flash. Back -- you just go into settings

and press no flash. LAUGHTER Backspin obviously making the ball

carry further in the court even though it is quite a cool night.

Unreal return. An real return. Murray had steady-0 in this game

remember. -- Murray had 30-0. Djokovic has come on and this return

was a very good first-served and not that reply. It is all great

encouragement, this animation from Murray, encouragement for Djokovic.

See that sliced taking it away from the return. He needs to save a bit

of energy if we go more than three sets here.

The person who sitting out on getting nervous the

mother-to-be. Wife, Kimberley at A little bit fortunate, Djokovic,

without first return. He just floated it in on the line. I wonder

if Murray might be complaining about a false call of out on that.

He is in full flow, Murray, he doesn't have to play against this --

like this against anybody else. He's putting some good ones in. He has

played Bernard Tomic, beat Raonic in five sets. He beat David Ferrer in

straight sets. This is a different challenge.

He has been in every single final of every tournament he has played for

over a year. He has won seven tournaments in a row. It is

frightening. He is not bad (!) big second serve here, this is where he

must be courageous and go for it. Good second serve but it is the

forehand that is just causing him problems today. He hasn't quite got

it right in terms of going for it, making too many mistakes. Backhand

has been immense. That is huge, that really is. It is

just a crushing blow on that backhand side. Virtual set point

there and you just laid into that one. Fabulous hit rotation.

What is shot! I can't believe he went flat! -- what a shot. I can't

believe he went for that. What a delicious vinyl this is turning

into. -- fine goal. -- final. That is two dames in a row. --

games. Captivating stuff at the Australian

Open. When Murray is seeing a backhand, he

is pouncing on it. He certainly has more pace on that side than Djokovic

does. When he actually unleashes it and flattens it out, it is a more

powerful shot. Doesn't like his forehand at the

moment, that is where the mistakes are coming from. One half of the

doubles champions, his brother, Jamie, watching on. It looks like he

opens up too much there. He flips it round, you can see he does not stay

with it long enough. The weight coming up the back of the ball

instead of through it. Dangerous stuff from Djokovic to go

into that backhand now, a lot of talk from Murray. Driven himself on

in these last two games, to win them both. To break back and then to

hold. A huge effort from Murray to stay with Djokovic in this sort of

form. He needs this set, you can feel that.

is a brutal set. You also know, nothing is ever guaranteed but if

Djokovic wins this set, the chances of Murray coming back, he knows it,

Djokovic knows it, this is just such a huge passage of play coming up

right now. Only Novak Djokovic has been in more

Australian Open finals than Andy Murray. Six the Djokovic and number

five for Murray. In fact, only nine men have ever won

the same slant six times and that is what Djokovic is trying to do here.

look. They will get an extra look. They will get an extra

tie-break anyway. Wide and Djokovic has pulled him into that. LAUGHTER

Still two gain points. -- game. You think the game is over at 40-0,

not against Djokovic. No. 90 mile an hour winner.

he is out for a stroll. 36, I mean, take a week off. Really.

It is not just getting the ball back to each other, they are hitting it

hard and to the corners. The coach, dad, physical trainers...

And he was in on a wing and a prayer, Murray and he looks tired.

And he is making decisions like he is tired and Djokovic, out of

nowhere really, has come back from 40-0 down to a break point up.

Unreal. That is an real, five straight points and it is hats off

to both but really, Djokovic has caused a bit of a technical break

down on the forehand side of Murray and he has just hung in there. This

is what he does, he is brutal. 6-5. A magnificent second set, an hour

and a quarter of it. Murray at 5-5, having fought back into this set. He

was 40-0 up and Djokovic came back. Five straight points to earn the

right to go for a two set lead. Just looking at the end of that

game, Djokovic looks like it's 1-1 in the first set. He does not look

tired, Murray looks exhausted. I am sure he is not, still think he has

plenty left in the tank but facially, his eyes look tired.

, amazing. Not feel pain at the! . -- you do

setting new standards. Both 28 years old. Djokovic isn't even panting.

Bit of a pushy one, wasn't it? It was. Didn't accelerate at all on

that one, that was surprising, to say the least. Serving for the set,

30-15. That first serve was going to go in

the court. Was that the mark? It does not make any difference now.

I would love to know, could we find out? We should run it, just for

ourselves. It looked wider, on the sideline, perhaps that was the mark.

A forehand error and Djokovic takes it two set lead. Murray has come

back eight times from two down, the last against Frenchman Adrian

Mannarino at the French Open. But against Djokovic in the Australian

Open final? We will see. Andy Murray had his chances but

Djokovic so tough on the big points and he reads by 2-0. Onto the third,

a tense affair, they exchanged breaks of serve, as we join it 5-5.

So good! The extra rest snap from that short ball. To get that ball

away from Djokovic is not easy. He had to get its down fast and away

from Djokovic before he recovered. Brilliant.

They have played two tie-breaks in last year's final and they split

them. Is that what is happening now? It looks that way.

This is not something he has done very often. The second serve

charging into the net paid off, excellent volley.

Just away on the forehand side. That characterises the match. Murray did

well, he made the fight from 40-0 down. But a tie-break it is. A

Djokovic victory here takes him to the Australian Open title yet again,

it would be number six. Andy Murray must win or he is done.

He has felt that he has had to go for the second serve in the Matt and

I think he is right. He has served some double faults and who went for

that and he just missed it by one inch and that is going to happen

against Djokovic, you have to be aggressive on the second serve.

Centre service line was called out. Not the deep service line. I thought

it got The Edge. He has got it. He has. He is not sure about it! Boris.

His dad is. His dad and his manager. If you want Djokovic at your

tournament, it is going to cost you! A lot!

That is the worst forehand he has hit for a while. It looks like he

did not use his legs on that one. It looks a big lead, 3-0. It is only

one break. The eternal optimist, John Lloyd! You have to try and E.

He needs to hold both these two serves and points. That is the

first. On this side of the scoreboard. And running. Ticking

over. The backhand has been fabulous today, Murray.

Interesting second serve here. He has to go for it, like he has been.

That is exactly the same place as on the first point! I am afraid. That

is something his team have worked on. They know he has to improve that

side of it but unfortunately, it is not part of his memory bank yet, he

has not done it long enough. At crucial points, it is not quite

there. He has tried to do it but has not quite got it yet and it has hurt

him big time in this tie-break. You look at something like Pete Sampras

at his best and he hit those second serves at 110 on huge points because

that was his mindset, he was used to doing it over the years. Merry has

never done that, he has been a second serve spinner,

never done that, he has been a court and makes it play. That is not

good enough against Djokovic. Not a good tie-breaks so far from Murray.

-- tie-breaker. 4-2 is a good leader. 5-1 is huge playing a

tie-break. Two points away from another famous victory. This superb

sportsman. And it is away. It appears to be

over. Five consecutive match points, Novak Djokovic. Brave effort from

Andy Murray throughout the tournament. The second set hero was

a classic. -- here. Two good points from Murray, well

done. But now the title is on his bracket. -- bracket.

And it is an ace! That finishes the championship and it is the number

one seed, the top dog, the number one in the world. He wins it. Poor

Andy Murray loses an Australian Open final again. Another Novak Djokovic.

But what a player! Another extraordinary performance here in

Melbourne from this man. Yes, this extraordinary performance here in

court has been good to him and he has been good to the tournament as

well. Grand slam title number 11, he joins Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver, this

is an all-time great and he maybe the greatest when all is said and

done. I am not sure what time the first

flight is out Melbourne tomorrow but Andy is going to be a father very

shortly! He is a dual grand slam champion, Olympic champion, Davis

Cup champion and two bars, a champion here in Australia. Ladies

and gentlemen, Andy Murray! APPLAUSE.

congratulate Novak. Six Australian opens is an incredible feat and also

for what he has done the last year, it has been incredible consistency.

No question, 28, as long as he keeps his motivation and I do not see why

not, he likes chasing records, he has another five years at the top

and no reason why he should not get past Roger Federer the way he is

playing at the moment. This court and tournament, he owns it, it is so

hard to beat him on a service like this. The Australian Open is the

first slam of the year and you wonder if the motivation is not as

much, if difficult year the year before but he seems to train harder

than anybody to get ready for the first, and he comes in and the

Australian Open is like his home. He loves the surface and the crowd and

the weather and is virtually unbeatable.

You talked about the serve of Andy Murray, we often said the second

needs work, he has addressed that and is going for it more. The double

faults, costly, everybody will mention that, but it is the right

idea. Absolutely right, it becomes a habit and he has been used to in his

career having a safety second serve. Spinning it in and can get away with

it against most people but not Djokovic. So he now hits it harder

but it is not a habit yet, he does not just go at 30, 40 and do it. The

great service becomes a guarantee and they just do it. He is still

thinking about it, he missed a couple and doubted himself but he

will get used to it as he wins more. He has to keep working on that and

having the belief it is the right thing to do. I think it's definitely

is. He needs to keep attacking, it is the only way to beat Djokovic,

take risks and accept he will make errors. In the first set, you could

see the game attacking every first serve of Djokovic. Attacking early,

and his forehand was not right and he made too many mistakes. He got it

back in the last sets and you expect that with Andy Murray and Djokovic.

But he have such a bad start. It is close, not much in it. We have

talked about Martina Navratilova, she changed the face of tennis and

so did Roger Federer and Nadal and now also is Djokovic and looks

almost unbeatable. It is a frightening prospect, where do you

go as a coach? How do you attack and get three points? You do not. So you

stay without -- out within five hours and had to stay mentally

tough. Andy got a bit irritated again and negative energy, you have

to stay positive and stay in it. The game plan of Andy Murray is the

right way but he has to execute it better than today. I do not now --

no how you are with cuddly toys, but I am reliably informed that is a

wombat! Federer has 17 Grand Slams and he is looking at that.

Celebrating in Melbourne today. John, thank you very much. That is

is the Davis Cup, an event that provided so many memorable moments
