Good evening and welcome to titanic Belfast, where some of the biggest | :00:26. | :00:32.
names in sport will be arriving over the next hour before going across to | :00:33. | :00:39.
the arena for the 62nd BBC Sports Personality of the Year. It is a | :00:40. | :00:43.
cliche, but this is a glittering ceremony. And it starts with the red | :00:44. | :00:50.
carpet. You have to go back to 1954, I doubt there was a red carpet when | :00:51. | :00:55.
Sir Chris Chester Fay became the first winner. And that is what we | :00:56. | :00:58.
are going to do, chat away for the next six to minutes. With me, the | :00:59. | :01:04.
Golden girl of the Olympic boxing ring, Nicola Adams. And also packing | :01:05. | :01:07.
a punch, though McCullum, my Coke presenter. Yes, it is wonderful to | :01:08. | :01:13.
have you here, Nicola. It is nerve-wracking being on the red | :01:14. | :01:16.
carpet? It is, but I am guessing they will take it in their stride. A | :01:17. | :01:24.
those 12 contenders hoping to become the BBC Sports Personality of the | :01:25. | :01:30.
Year for 2015. Here they are. COMMENTATOR: Lizzie Armitstead leads | :01:31. | :01:35.
the way for Great Britain! It is gold for Lizzie Armitstead! Yes! An | :01:36. | :01:50.
absolute belter! She comes back to win her second world title, Jessica | :01:51. | :01:55.
Ennis-Hill! Mo Farah striking for gold again! Mo Farah is the world | :01:56. | :02:00.
champion again! Chris Froome is Britain's two-time | :02:01. | :02:09.
winner of the Tour de France. Tyson Fury, the self-styled Gypsy King, is | :02:10. | :02:13.
the heavyweight champion of the world. Lewis Hamilton has won his | :02:14. | :02:21.
third World Championship! He is the 2015 World Championship Great | :02:22. | :02:27.
Britain have done it! Andy Murray unbeaten in Davis Cup! Adam Peaty | :02:28. | :02:37.
has won gold in the 100 and the 50. The first time that double as ever | :02:38. | :02:41.
been done at the World Championships for men. Rutherford completes his | :02:42. | :02:47.
Grand Slam just Olympic, European, Commonwealth and now world champion. | :02:48. | :02:54.
And the Leeds Rhinos have gone and done it again! Max Whitlock is the | :02:55. | :03:09.
pommel horse World Championships so, how do we find out who is the winner | :03:10. | :03:15.
this year? Well, you can register online now at the Sports Personality | :03:16. | :03:19.
section of the BBC Sport website. Voting does not open until the live | :03:20. | :03:24.
show itself in the arena. It is absolutely free to vote online. You | :03:25. | :03:29.
will be able to vote on the landline and on your mobile. Full terms and | :03:30. | :03:34.
conditions are on the website. Sit back and enjoy and we will find out | :03:35. | :03:38.
soon enough who is going to be this year's Sports Personality of the | :03:39. | :03:43.
Year. And what a way to start, as we move down onto the red carpet. 12 | :03:44. | :03:48.
nominees tonight. One of them with me now, world road race champion and | :03:49. | :03:52.
cycling hero Lizzie Armitstead. Claire has given me some advice of | :03:53. | :03:56.
what to say and what not to say on the red carpet. Apparently what I | :03:57. | :04:00.
have to say is, who are you wearing? My dress is Estella McCartney! You | :04:01. | :04:05.
look amazing, and so you should. This year you have been top of the | :04:06. | :04:09.
world, you have been in a hospital bed, and now here you are woman | :04:10. | :04:13.
nominated for Sports Personality of the Year. All the pain worth it to | :04:14. | :04:18.
be here? Absolutely. I am still in shock. It is quite surreal to be at | :04:19. | :04:23.
the Sports Personality of the Year. As a cyclist I am recognised but in | :04:24. | :04:27.
the sporting arena, it is different. Feeling proud and happy. What is it | :04:28. | :04:31.
like when you are nominated and people start talking about you? | :04:32. | :04:35.
People like Mark Cavendish says, she has put women's cycling on the map? | :04:36. | :04:40.
It obviously makes me very proud and appreciative that women's cycling is | :04:41. | :04:45.
being taken seriously now. To have a small part in that makes me very | :04:46. | :04:49.
proud. Cycling has done so well at Sports Personality. Chris Froome | :04:50. | :04:52.
winning the Tour de France again this year of course. I was there | :04:53. | :04:57.
when you got silver at London 2012. That was when you got it all started | :04:58. | :05:01.
just fully deserved now to be world champion. But now, surely, the 2016, | :05:02. | :05:10.
you must be, bring it on! Yes, obviously, that is the ultimate | :05:11. | :05:14.
goal, gold in Rio is all I think about now. I know, my brother is | :05:15. | :05:22.
that an amateur club in cycling, and he has to wait months to get into | :05:23. | :05:26.
the velodrome. Participation in some sports has gone down but in cycling | :05:27. | :05:30.
it has gone through the roof. How good is it to be part of that | :05:31. | :05:35.
legacy? I love being part of the cycling boom. I could not have been | :05:36. | :05:39.
here at a better time. Going home now, there is families on their | :05:40. | :05:42.
bikes every weekend. It makes me feel proud to be part of that. What | :05:43. | :05:47.
would your advice be to any aspiring young cyclists? Erm, I would say, | :05:48. | :05:53.
you do not need the best kit to be the best. I started on a pretty | :05:54. | :05:58.
useless like and got my results. It does not have to be as expensive as | :05:59. | :06:03.
you think. Lizzie Armitstead, absolutely outstanding. That has | :06:04. | :06:07.
made my night already and we are only just now! The stars still | :06:08. | :06:13.
gathering here on the red carpet. Delighted to say one of the most | :06:14. | :06:16.
decorated Gaelic footballers Ulster has ever produced is with me now. | :06:17. | :06:27.
Legend of Armagh and now manager of Crossmaglen. What does it feel like | :06:28. | :06:31.
to be here tonight? It is amazing. The only other time I was on a red | :06:32. | :06:35.
carpet was on my wedding day. This is something I have watched for many | :06:36. | :06:40.
years. It is fantastic for Belfast and for the north. But is fairly | :06:41. | :06:45.
posh to have a red carpet on your wedding day?! Yes, it was a posh do. | :06:46. | :06:51.
She insisted! How are you finding being a manager now? To be honest, | :06:52. | :06:57.
this is my second year. The first year was finding my feet. I played | :06:58. | :07:00.
with a lot of the guys I was managing. It is a different | :07:01. | :07:05.
relationship. This year we have had a lot more success. When you have | :07:06. | :07:11.
that, you enjoy it more. Well, we are on the red carpet, as we keep | :07:12. | :07:15.
saying. You have been meeting the stars on your way down - who are you | :07:16. | :07:19.
most looking forward to meeting tonight? I hope to see Rory McIlory. | :07:20. | :07:23.
I don't know if Graeme McDowell is here. I am an avid amateur golfer, | :07:24. | :07:28.
who absolutely loves watching those guys. And I marvel at what they can | :07:29. | :07:36.
do week in, week out, so it would be lovely to meet those two. If Barry | :07:37. | :07:43.
McGuigan was here, I would just pass out on the floor. This is Northern | :07:44. | :07:48.
Ireland history right here. The wonderful Dennis Taylor is with me. | :07:49. | :07:54.
But first of all, take me back to your Sports Personality in 1972. A | :07:55. | :07:57.
long time ago but it was wonderful because I received it from Princess | :07:58. | :08:03.
Anne. Believe it or not, Dame Mary Peters, athletics leads the way, | :08:04. | :08:07.
with 17 winners. Jessica Ennis-Hill is on the list, as is Mo Farah. Both | :08:08. | :08:11.
of them rightly so. And Greg Rutherford as well. And Greg | :08:12. | :08:16.
Rutherford as well. Yes, very strong. I hope it does not split the | :08:17. | :08:22.
vote. I know who I am voting for. Someone from the BBC is on the roof, | :08:23. | :08:30.
they would sniper you for! But it is lovely to have it here in Belfast, | :08:31. | :08:36.
isn't it, Dennis? 1985, that scoundrel Barry McGuigan to it away | :08:37. | :08:40.
from you? We were just talking about that. The delightful Mary, we were | :08:41. | :08:45.
sitting together ringside when obviously, beat Pedrosa, it was an | :08:46. | :08:50.
unbelievable night at Queen's Park football ground. Unbelievable night, | :08:51. | :08:54.
wasn't it, Mary? Which one had the most viewers on the BBC, or on | :08:55. | :08:59.
television, was it Barry Orr yourself? I think it might have been | :09:00. | :09:03.
you? I get stick off the snooker boys if I keep mentioning that 18.5 | :09:04. | :09:09.
million. The biggest BBC Two audience ever, the biggest audience | :09:10. | :09:13.
after midnight. I have forgotten about it - as you can tell! You are | :09:14. | :09:20.
both two absolutely wonderful sons and daughters of Northern Ireland. | :09:21. | :09:24.
What does it need to have this here at this arena? It is very special. | :09:25. | :09:30.
Belfast has opened its heart. I have been around town this morning and it | :09:31. | :09:34.
is amazing. Yes, Gary Lineker woke up somewhere at four o'clock in the | :09:35. | :09:37.
morning after a night out in Belfast. A couple of weeks ago we | :09:38. | :09:42.
were at the waterfront with Ronnie O'Sullivan and Jimmy white, and I | :09:43. | :09:47.
was doing some trick shots. 1800 people. Northern Ireland qualified, | :09:48. | :09:51.
Ireland qualified. I stood up and said, what a fantastic week for | :09:52. | :09:55.
Irish sport. I said, Daniel O'Donnell got through in Strictly | :09:56. | :10:00.
Come Dancing last night, and it brought the house town! Two | :10:01. | :10:08.
absolutely Jens there. A warm welcome to viewers on the BBC News | :10:09. | :10:12.
Channel. We are live on the red carpet here. I am delighted to say | :10:13. | :10:17.
Kevin Sinfield from rugby league fame is with me. The first time a | :10:18. | :10:22.
rugby league player has been in the top 12. How pleased are you to be | :10:23. | :10:27.
here tonight? Really delighted and very proud of the sport I come from. | :10:28. | :10:32.
To be the first is quite ground-breaking for us as a sport. | :10:33. | :10:40.
Hopefully we will get 34 minutes, instead of the usual 8-10 seconds on | :10:41. | :10:46.
the TV. It is huge for the grassroots of our game. -- three or | :10:47. | :10:54.
four minutes. You do have a rowdy bunch of Leeds Rhinos with you | :10:55. | :10:58.
tonight. It is important for you to give something back now you have | :10:59. | :11:05.
switched codes, so how important is that? Very much. Rugby league has | :11:06. | :11:10.
given me everything in my career so far from the age of seven. So, | :11:11. | :11:15.
certainly I will never forget that. I have left the rhinos, but I am a | :11:16. | :11:21.
keen supporter. I played alongside a lot of the guys for 10-15 years and | :11:22. | :11:26.
it has been brilliant. Those friendships will never go. I owe | :11:27. | :11:31.
rugby league everything. -Sinfield, enjoy your night. Catch up with | :11:32. | :11:34.
those Leeds Rhinos! Kevin Sinfield is a legend. And | :11:35. | :11:47.
athletics of course plays such a huge part tonight when you look | :11:48. | :11:50.
through the names in the nominations list. I have got Alison Curbishley | :11:51. | :12:02.
and Steve Cram with me now. Forget Posh and! BecksHe is from a better | :12:03. | :12:10.
part of the north-east than I am! Each of them have got a very | :12:11. | :12:13.
different story and I think that is the beauty. Unfortunately it splits | :12:14. | :12:19.
the athletics vote. So everybody out there, double up. You have got to | :12:20. | :12:22.
vote for each one of them. Greg has had phenomenal three or four years, | :12:23. | :12:29.
but so has Mo. And Jess was the comeback story. They have all got | :12:30. | :12:33.
different reasons for you to vote for them. But it is great for | :12:34. | :12:37.
athletics. People will talk about the physical demands of what Jessica | :12:38. | :12:42.
Ennis-Hill has been through this year in terms of starting a family, | :12:43. | :12:47.
retraining. It is not just that, it is the perspective which starting a | :12:48. | :12:53.
family gives you as well, to keep the edge and the single-mindedness | :12:54. | :12:55.
to become world champion? Absolutely right. Being the sportsperson you | :12:56. | :13:01.
are very, very selfish. When you hear Jess talk this year it has all | :13:02. | :13:04.
been about... It is very different now, her perspective on life has | :13:05. | :13:08.
changed. Probably every woman who has ever had a baby now hates her | :13:09. | :13:13.
because look at the stage of her. She is phenomenal. But back in March | :13:14. | :13:19.
she could hardly walk. She still has an Achilles problem. For me, she | :13:20. | :13:24.
gets my vote. Sorry, Greg and Mo! Thank you very much, you two. You | :13:25. | :13:30.
get to the bar, Steve. One man who has got more discipline and Steve | :13:31. | :13:36.
Cram of course is Mo Farah, who is nominated tonight. He is unable to | :13:37. | :13:43.
be here, but let's just remind ourselves of the majesty of Mo. | :13:44. | :13:50.
The reason why I run is because I enjoy it so much. I love running, it | :13:51. | :13:56.
is what I do and what I am good at. STEVE CRAM: Mo Farah is the world | :13:57. | :14:01.
champion again! From a speed perspective they just | :14:02. | :14:05.
cannot match him, and that is a weapon which is deadly for the other | :14:06. | :14:09.
guys. I just want to continue my career winning medals for my | :14:10. | :14:12.
country, breaking records and continuing on while I can. | :14:13. | :14:18.
BRENDAN FOSTER: The greatest distance runner we have ever had. | :14:19. | :14:22.
I believe he is so physically gifted, he has got the speed along | :14:23. | :14:26.
with the stamina which no-one can match right now. I want to be the | :14:27. | :14:32.
guy who won the most medals for his country. | :14:33. | :14:35.
Every year in Sports Personality there are firsts and this year is no | :14:36. | :14:39.
exception. It is the first time a female footballer has been nominated | :14:40. | :14:44.
in the top 12. Lucy Bronze is with me now. Your first time on the red | :14:45. | :14:48.
carpet. You are looking fabulous. How are you feeling? | :14:49. | :14:52.
A little bit nervous. I wasn't expecting this. I didn't know what | :14:53. | :14:59.
to expect, to be honest. And this my first event on the red carpet and | :15:00. | :15:03.
being in the spotlight. It is exciting to be a part of it. I'm | :15:04. | :15:08.
sure you are, and we are looking forward to it. I know you are a lot | :15:09. | :15:12.
more comfortable in your football kit. You've done so much for women's | :15:13. | :15:15.
sport in general. How pleased with you on the achievement and where you | :15:16. | :15:21.
put women's sport on the map now? All the girls involved in the | :15:22. | :15:24.
England team and the league, we are so excited and so proud with what we | :15:25. | :15:29.
are able to do. It is not just us but the little girls and boys of the | :15:30. | :15:32.
future. How we can change the game now is going to bode well for the | :15:33. | :15:37.
future. I'm excited to see how it turns out. Every success. Good luck | :15:38. | :15:42.
for tonight. And from one nomination to another. How embarrassing is | :15:43. | :15:46.
this. We've worn the same shoes. People are going to talk. Everyone | :15:47. | :15:52.
is like, who the heck is there beside him? Greg Rutherford, how are | :15:53. | :15:57.
you? I'm looking forward to an interesting evening. Interesting | :15:58. | :16:06.
shoes. A good choice. You are the self proclaimed ginger one. It is | :16:07. | :16:11.
circumstance. Even with an Olympic gold, given it was "Super Saturday," | :16:12. | :16:16.
there was in many ways a shadow to step out of and you've done that in | :16:17. | :16:20.
fine style in 2015. You must be really proud. Absolutely. A lot of | :16:21. | :16:24.
hard work goes into everything we do. I've been a pressure athlete for | :16:25. | :16:30.
ten years now. I've had a few successes but this year backs up | :16:31. | :16:33.
everything I've had previous. I am proud. Hopefully a few more years | :16:34. | :16:39.
can come. I want to put this into perspective for anybody watching at | :16:40. | :16:45.
home. There are only four other Britons, can you name them? Daley | :16:46. | :16:54.
Thompson, Sally Gunnell and Linford Christie I believe. Sensational. You | :16:55. | :16:59.
are being honoured tonight but that will be remembered in 100 years. I | :17:00. | :17:03.
don't know. It is really weird for me, because they are names I grew up | :17:04. | :17:08.
with. They are the names of British athletics and sport as well. So to | :17:09. | :17:11.
have achieved what they have done, that's a big thing for me. Steve | :17:12. | :17:19.
Cram made a really good point, and Alison Curbishley. The three names | :17:20. | :17:23.
of athletics and there's a worry they could split the vote. Why would | :17:24. | :17:27.
you say people should vote for you over the other two. Let's get it | :17:28. | :17:32.
right. We are going to go to war on athletics, let's do it now? All of | :17:33. | :17:38.
us have had a fantastic year. Mo just keeps on winning and for | :17:39. | :17:44.
Jessica to come back so soon after having a child, that's incredible. | :17:45. | :17:47.
Do you know the one thing I would say about what you achieved that | :17:48. | :17:51.
wasn't as good for me? You didn't have a baby before you did what you | :17:52. | :17:56.
did, which is why I want you to step this way as Jessica Ennis-Hill joins | :17:57. | :18:03.
us now. I'm so sad Mo isn't here. It would have within the greatest | :18:04. | :18:06.
moment ever. How do you feel tonight? Really excited. I love I | :18:07. | :18:14.
love coming to these events. Everyone has talked about your | :18:15. | :18:19.
story. More than anything I suppose this year was about making a family | :18:20. | :18:22.
and everything that's amazing that comes with that. Yes, this year has | :18:23. | :18:27.
been such a huge year for me and our family, and coming back to my career | :18:28. | :18:32.
and my sport and doing what I did has been fantastic It's been a great | :18:33. | :18:37.
year. You can feel the pressure of what you have to achieve. You were | :18:38. | :18:41.
talking within your team of, if we could win a bronze, that would be | :18:42. | :18:44.
amazing. In a strange way was that one of the real secrets to this | :18:45. | :18:49.
recipe of success again? I think definitely being realistic and not | :18:50. | :18:52.
overestimating what I wanted to achieve. Making sure I set realistic | :18:53. | :18:58.
targets and didn't stretch them too much. You set yourself up for a | :18:59. | :19:04.
fall. Coming back from having a child isn't the easiest thing. You | :19:05. | :19:07.
have to take time to find your feet again really. I would say how can | :19:08. | :19:11.
you top the year you've both had, but you can. We don't see 99% of | :19:12. | :19:19.
what you guys do, the hard work, the loneliness of what you have to do. | :19:20. | :19:24.
You get up most mornings when it's still dark. I'm assuming that all | :19:25. | :19:27.
eyes are set on Rio? That's the plan. It is back into training for | :19:28. | :19:32.
all the athletes now. We are trying to prepare the best we can for the | :19:33. | :19:38.
summer. I've kept you, I really appreciate it. A word on each other. | :19:39. | :19:45.
Jessica, we led through the list of Greg Rutherford. Daley Thompson, | :19:46. | :19:49.
Linford Chrissie and Jonathan Edwards. A word about what Greg has | :19:50. | :19:55.
done? He's been phenomenal. As athletes we have one or two moments | :19:56. | :20:00.
to shine and Greg's delivered that on every level. And Jess, continues | :20:01. | :20:08.
to raise the bar. Parred pardon the terrible pun. I remember 2012 and | :20:09. | :20:15.
seeing that huge poster of her, and having so much pressure and going | :20:16. | :20:18.
out and winning time after time. I've not had that before. It is so | :20:19. | :20:24.
inspiring to see. I'm not going to try to influence the vote, but the | :20:25. | :20:31.
VT is a nomination, he needed a car to do what he done. He needed a car. | :20:32. | :20:38.
I only ever wanted to get to Formula One and win the championship. It is | :20:39. | :20:42.
an experience, you have to try to enjoy, because you can't really | :20:43. | :20:47.
understand it. I remember being at my dad's house, a one bedroom | :20:48. | :20:53.
apartment and watching this and I wanted to do that and to think that | :20:54. | :20:58.
today I am, 25 years later. I think he has matured beyond all scope. | :20:59. | :21:04.
People realised he was always quick. He has matured and grown into | :21:05. | :21:08.
something that's very special. If there were any doubters, this year | :21:09. | :21:17.
put that to bed. There was never, I want to equal Fanja or Senna, but if | :21:18. | :21:23.
I do, believe me I will grab it with both hands. Another jet setter from | :21:24. | :21:31.
around the world. He's flown in from Florida, Graeme McDowell from | :21:32. | :21:35.
Portrush. Good to see you and your lovely wife. What does it mean to be | :21:36. | :21:39.
part of Sports Personality of the Year? We are unbelievably excited to | :21:40. | :21:44.
be here. First time in Belfast and with everything going on in Northern | :21:45. | :21:47.
Ireland, the Open championship. We wouldn't have missed it for the | :21:48. | :21:52.
world. Surrounded by sporting heroes and sporting celebrities. Such a | :21:53. | :21:55.
great buzz in the city. Really excited. Christen, this man always | :21:56. | :22:00.
seems calm, cool and collected. Is he really like that at home? He. Is | :22:01. | :22:06.
I'm secretly envious how cool and collected he can be. But he is | :22:07. | :22:09.
wonderful, just as you would imagine him to be at home. He's the same. I | :22:10. | :22:16.
know you you've added to your family, a little baby 15 months old? | :22:17. | :22:22.
A 15 month old girl, in Florida. We are looking forward to getting home | :22:23. | :22:27.
to see her. We'll record this and she can see it when she is old | :22:28. | :22:31.
enough to understand. I get in trouble at home. You know how it | :22:32. | :22:37.
goes. You've got to keep him in line. 2016, what does that hold for | :22:38. | :22:44.
you? It was a great end to the year, 2015, a bumpy one midway but | :22:45. | :22:50.
finished really strong. Feeling fit and healthy, like a lot of momentum. | :22:51. | :22:57.
My off season is short. I'm in Hawaii on the PGA Tour. I feel like | :22:58. | :23:02.
I'm settling into family life. I enjoy being at home with the family, | :23:03. | :23:07.
but I really want to achieve great things in golf. In Portrush I need | :23:08. | :23:11.
to be sharp and ready for that. Absolutely. We'll be there. | :23:12. | :23:17.
Congratulations. Enjoy tonight and every success in 2016. Thank you | :23:18. | :23:27.
both. Well, mine eyes have seen the glory of Espana '82. | :23:28. | :23:31.
both. Well, mine eyes have seen the time. We all scratched our heads | :23:32. | :23:44.
going into that campaign. I don't know if you can sum it up, it has | :23:45. | :23:49.
been a journey we would never forget. When you come from such a | :23:50. | :23:54.
low point that we were in for a time, it took time to build up. We | :23:55. | :23:58.
built a stronger squad, a good team. We proved that. I think the campaign | :23:59. | :24:02.
was a reflection on what the lads put in. They were tremendous over | :24:03. | :24:07.
the ten games. We lost one game, and now we can look forward to France. | :24:08. | :24:10.
When the draw was coming out there were two types of Northern Ireland | :24:11. | :24:15.
fans, one said, give us the easiest team in each group, and the ones | :24:16. | :24:19.
like me who said, I will take anybody. Bring them all on. Is that | :24:20. | :24:25.
the attitude in the camp, whatever, let's have it? Our best results were | :24:26. | :24:30.
against Russia and Portugal. We look forward to the tournament. I | :24:31. | :24:34.
certainly believe that playing Poland and Ukraine next in the | :24:35. | :24:38.
opening two games gives us a real opportunity to take points. We look | :24:39. | :24:41.
forward to playing the Germans in Paris. You are a legend. Let's bring | :24:42. | :24:47.
in one of the men who has flourished. Hello mate. For me he's | :24:48. | :24:54.
the coach of the year. Is he coach of next year as well? I hope he gets | :24:55. | :24:58.
it. He's been fantastic since he came in. It's been a process that's | :24:59. | :25:02.
not just been over the last year or two but it has taken three, maybe | :25:03. | :25:08.
four years. All credit to Michael, he's managed to achieve something we | :25:09. | :25:12.
didn't think was possible. He gave us belief that we could do it. | :25:13. | :25:17.
That's key to me, what you said, he made you think you could do it. | :25:18. | :25:21.
There was that mentality. We felt so far away. How did this man make you | :25:22. | :25:27.
believe? He's brought the best out of the whole team. I spoke to Gareth | :25:28. | :25:33.
McColly before we qualified and they were talking when, not if. After the | :25:34. | :25:38.
last campaigns sorry, the campaign before qualification. It wasn't a | :25:39. | :25:42.
great campaign by ourselves. Michael got the stats up and talked us | :25:43. | :25:46.
through things. Things maybe we weren't looking at. Don't want to go | :25:47. | :25:51.
into too much detail. He looked at things beyond what we were able to | :25:52. | :25:56.
see and brought it to our attention and we were able to change a lot of | :25:57. | :26:03.
those things and it paid off. No-one from Northern Ireland is going to | :26:04. | :26:08.
pay to good on a beach. They need to know that. On behalf of everyone | :26:09. | :26:11.
watching in Northern Ireland, thank you so much and enjoy the next year, | :26:12. | :26:15.
let alone tonight. Thank you. Thank you. The Davis Cup team winner Andy | :26:16. | :26:20.
Murray is with me tonight. Fresh from that win of the it must be | :26:21. | :26:25.
amazing to come here tonight and celebrate again. It's great to be | :26:26. | :26:30.
around all of the team. We've got a great relationship. I've known a lot | :26:31. | :26:34.
of the team for a long time. The captain coached me when I was 11 | :26:35. | :26:39.
years old. My brother was on the team as well. Really great to do it | :26:40. | :26:43.
with all of them. Happy we've all been able to make it. And we can see | :26:44. | :26:48.
the team joining us now, including your brother behind us. How | :26:49. | :26:51.
different is it to competing on your own to having the team and being | :26:52. | :26:55.
part of that? It is obviously different. The rest of the year | :26:56. | :26:59.
pretty much relying on ourselves, whereas you have to put trust in | :27:00. | :27:06.
your team. We have that. It's been a five-year process to get to the | :27:07. | :27:10.
final and eventually winning it, a lot of players had played their part | :27:11. | :27:16.
in helping us win the Davis Cup. Everyone has done an amazing job, so | :27:17. | :27:20.
I'm glad that everyone is here and able to make it. We'll have a good | :27:21. | :27:25.
time tonight. And I believe this is your first time in Northern Ireland? | :27:26. | :27:30.
First time, amazingly. Are we giving you a good enough welcome? I only | :27:31. | :27:34.
arrived 30 minutes ago. I was training in Dubai and I just landed | :27:35. | :27:40.
today. Seems nice and hopefully we'll have a good night. And you are | :27:41. | :27:44.
of course in the top 12. What would it mean to you to lift the Sports | :27:45. | :27:47.
Personality of the Year for the second time? It would be nice, | :27:48. | :27:53.
obviously. There's a lot of great athletes that are also up for the | :27:54. | :27:59.
award. I'm just happy to be part of that, to be recognised for the year | :28:00. | :28:05.
that I've had in tennis. We'll see what happens. There's a lot of | :28:06. | :28:09.
deserving winners this evening. Too true. You and your team, go and | :28:10. | :28:15.
enjoy some hospitality. Have a great first time in Northern Ireland. Andy | :28:16. | :28:18.
Murray, thank you very much. Colin is with somebody special. You say | :28:19. | :28:23.
special, but this man ain't that special. James Nesbitt, what is it | :28:24. | :28:28.
like to be surrounded by responsibility royalty. Like the | :28:29. | :28:34.
proverbial, can't say it, it is family television and we're live! It | :28:35. | :28:38.
is something I've grown up that we are in Belfast and the timing that | :28:39. | :28:46.
he has appeared for Coleraine. An outstanding achievement. Something | :28:47. | :28:50.
that hasn't been mentioned, should it be Republic of Ireland's | :28:51. | :28:55.
achievement in back to back Six Nations titles? I was at | :28:56. | :29:01.
Murrayfield. An incredibly exciting climax when England missed out, | :29:02. | :29:06.
which was devastating for us, Colin. And Northern Ireland of course, so | :29:07. | :29:09.
it is thrilling that Belfast has this. We are big football fans but I | :29:10. | :29:15.
actually enjoy the odd years of Sports Personality of the Year, | :29:16. | :29:20.
because 16, 18, the even years, a big football tournament. This is | :29:21. | :29:25.
athletics. This is boxing. This is swimming. This is cycling and the | :29:26. | :29:29.
achievements have been unbelievable in 2015 on a world stage. It is | :29:30. | :29:35.
just, what I think is great about it is that kids are still incredibly | :29:36. | :29:40.
fascinated with sport. Sporting heroes haven't gone out of fashion | :29:41. | :29:45.
and we've got them across a whole range and spectrum of sports. That's | :29:46. | :29:49.
what makes this year special, but this is all about Northern Ireland | :29:50. | :29:52.
tonight and it is so thrilling. I hope Michael is up on that stage | :29:53. | :29:57.
picking something up. AP McCoy, a lifetime achievement. That's | :29:58. | :30:00.
probably why we are here in Belfast. Like a full stop, he's done the | :30:01. | :30:04.
book, got the film and now the lifetime achievement. And he is | :30:05. | :30:11.
still younger than me. AP, he will probably take up golf. He'll | :30:12. | :30:15.
probably be on the European Tour in a couple of years. Enjoy it. You are | :30:16. | :30:20.
in a posher seat than me. But enjoy it. Thank you very much. | :30:21. | :30:27.
A lot of proud people in this city tonight, none more so than the Lord | :30:28. | :30:33.
Mayor of Belfast. Use a fantastic for Belfast, to put it mildly. | :30:34. | :30:39.
Absolutely brilliant for the city to have. A further demonstration of | :30:40. | :30:43.
whether city is at in terms of its confidence and its optimism. We have | :30:44. | :30:48.
major events all year. And you are a bit of a sports fan yourself? Oh, | :30:49. | :30:57.
yes, snooker, darts, GAA, you name it. And boxing as well. And of | :30:58. | :31:02.
course we have grown our own world-renowned heroes in the | :31:03. | :31:06.
sporting field. It is fantastic that Sports Personality is here this | :31:07. | :31:10.
year. We certainly do punch above our weight for a small country. | :31:11. | :31:17.
Absolutely. George best, Alex Higgins, Dennis Taylor, Rory | :31:18. | :31:18.
McIlory, you could go on and on. It is fantastic. For such a small city, | :31:19. | :31:24.
we produce a great amount of sports stars on the world stage. You go and | :31:25. | :31:29.
meet a few of your heroes. Thank you very much indeed, Lord Mayor. | :31:30. | :31:35.
The stars keep arriving, as we count down to Sports Personality of the | :31:36. | :31:40.
Year 2015 in the SSE Arena. We are just over the way at the Belfast | :31:41. | :31:46.
Titanic, and this is where they get their accreditation. It does not | :31:47. | :31:50.
matter who you are, you have to get accreditation. At the moment AP | :31:51. | :31:54.
McCoy is standing at a desk, and they are like, name? AP McCoy... And | :31:55. | :31:59.
he gets a little badge. You can remind yourself just how much | :32:00. | :32:03.
Northern Ireland has punched above its weight in 2015. | :32:04. | :32:13.
COMMENTATOR: He has done it! The World Snooker Championships it if | :32:14. | :32:22.
I've! -- the world snooker champion 1985! | :32:23. | :32:38.
He has got him with a right! Fantastic! Best! Beautiful football. | :32:39. | :32:44.
Genius! Northern Ireland, with a population | :32:45. | :32:57.
of just 1.8 million people, has consistently provided sport with an | :32:58. | :33:02.
abundance of iconic figures of the past, and continues today to produce | :33:03. | :33:08.
world-class competitors and leaders. Everybody on the street is delighted | :33:09. | :33:11.
when we have our successes. We have a lot of very driven, | :33:12. | :33:30.
determined people who are willing to go the extra mile. That is what it | :33:31. | :33:35.
is all about. We have all very much got sport in our DNA. If you are in | :33:36. | :33:40.
Northern Ireland, you are never a mile away from a green space. We do | :33:41. | :33:46.
not sell off our football pictures. We do not have golf clubs that you | :33:47. | :33:51.
have to spend ten grand to get into. There is a lesson there. If you make | :33:52. | :33:55.
sport accessible to everybody, it does not matter how big or small the | :33:56. | :33:59.
place is, you can do your thing. We do our thing in our own unique way. | :34:00. | :34:04.
Road racing thrives. Sporting dynasty is are built. The Dunlop | :34:05. | :34:08.
name is worn like a badge of honour around these roads. Sons and | :34:09. | :34:12.
daughters follow mothers and fathers onto Gaelic pitches across the | :34:13. | :34:22.
country. There is no other country in the world that has the level of | :34:23. | :34:26.
support and passion and connection to that sportsperson. It is | :34:27. | :34:33.
unsurpassed. I think sport has brought the community of Northern | :34:34. | :34:37.
Ireland together. Hopefully it will continue. I think there is a number | :34:38. | :34:47.
of ingredients. Charisma, fantastic talent and determination. The | :34:48. | :34:52.
Northern Ireland team, the game against Hungary, we used 14 players, | :34:53. | :34:59.
13 of them were born in Northern Ireland. A lot of our strength and | :35:00. | :35:06.
success has come from that. For a little nation, we punch way above | :35:07. | :35:11.
our weight. On an international stage we are very proud of where we | :35:12. | :35:15.
come. I think that has something to do with how sportspeople play as | :35:16. | :35:19.
well. People are passionate about sports. I think it is in the | :35:20. | :35:23.
Northern Ireland DNA. It makes us very proud to be able to come home. | :35:24. | :35:28.
People appreciate what we have done at putting a small country like | :35:29. | :35:40.
Northern Ireland onto the world map. Fantastic moments there. Another | :35:41. | :35:43.
young man who has been having some fantastic times this year is Adam | :35:44. | :35:48.
Peaty, one of our top 12 tonight. The youngest in the top 12 - how do | :35:49. | :35:52.
you feel being part of this tonight? It is amazing. It is not often you | :35:53. | :35:56.
get to go down the red carpet with some really famous faces around you. | :35:57. | :36:03.
It is nice to get proper smartphone once and enjoy it with the | :36:04. | :36:07.
girlfriend as well. Nice to get a night off, I am sure you do not get | :36:08. | :36:12.
much time with him? Not at all. He is always getting off somewhere to | :36:13. | :36:16.
train all compete in different places. It is really nice to spend | :36:17. | :36:21.
this night with him. It has been a superb year for you. Gold in the | :36:22. | :36:26.
breast rug. What is next for you next year? I will just focus on the | :36:27. | :36:30.
Olympics now. All the hard work has been done in the winter training | :36:31. | :36:36.
programme. We will be in Australia for two months, get away from the | :36:37. | :36:41.
cold, and the main focus is to enjoy the journey, really. I guess gold is | :36:42. | :36:47.
in your sites for Rio next year? Yes, gold is in everyone's sites at | :36:48. | :36:51.
it is who is willing to put the most effort in. I think I am willing to | :36:52. | :36:55.
make that sacrifice. Hopefully I will get one of those lanes, so I | :36:56. | :37:01.
can fight for gold. Just a word on tonight - who are you looking | :37:02. | :37:06.
forward to seeing most? Actually, let's take a look at your shoes | :37:07. | :37:10.
tonight. You have made a huge effort tonight. Those are something else! | :37:11. | :37:18.
Who are you wearing? Ted who is. We want you to have a fantastic night. | :37:19. | :37:22.
Congratulations on making the top 12. Go and enjoy yourselves in the | :37:23. | :37:26.
reception and good luck for Rio next year. Thank you. | :37:27. | :37:34.
Usually the red carpet is crazy and you miss people as they go past, but | :37:35. | :37:42.
we have landed on our feet again. AP McCoy, and JP McManus with me now. | :37:43. | :37:48.
How do you some up his career? He is a great man and he has stood the | :37:49. | :37:53.
test of time. And also, it has to be said, Tony, we talk about individual | :37:54. | :37:57.
sportspeople and there is a legion of people who have made it possible | :37:58. | :38:03.
for you? Very much so. Right through from the owners, the trainers, the | :38:04. | :38:06.
horses I was lucky enough to write. Horse racing is a wonderful sport. I | :38:07. | :38:11.
have pretty much lived all my life in horse racing and could not have | :38:12. | :38:15.
picked anything better. How strange is it knowing that you have won this | :38:16. | :38:19.
time, and you get more time to think about what you are going to say? I | :38:20. | :38:25.
often wished I knew I was going to win all the time, it would have made | :38:26. | :38:30.
life a lot easier. It is different. In 2010 when I won Sports | :38:31. | :38:34.
Personality, I did not know. There is an element of surprise. Whereas | :38:35. | :38:38.
this time I have known for a few weeks. And it is very special. I | :38:39. | :38:42.
look at the names on the trophy and it is a very prestigious award. | :38:43. | :38:51.
People like Sir Alex Ferguson and Pele, to have my name beside them, I | :38:52. | :38:57.
am very proud. JP, I read a quote about what united you two, and it | :38:58. | :39:01.
said you were hell bent on winning. You were addicted to winning. Is | :39:02. | :39:06.
that about right? I would say that is pretty accurate. Thank you very | :39:07. | :39:10.
much for talking to us. Enjoy your night. We can only say | :39:11. | :39:20.
congratulations like everybody else. Two of the smartest men in boxing, | :39:21. | :39:25.
Barry McGuigan and Carl Frampton with me now. You won it back in | :39:26. | :39:31.
1985, how special was that? It was fantastic. It is great first of all | :39:32. | :39:35.
for it to be in Belfast. We need more events this in Belfast. We are | :39:36. | :39:41.
thrilled to bits that it is here. The place is packed. They are | :39:42. | :39:45.
queueing around the corner, it is amazing. It is incredible that those | :39:46. | :39:49.
30 years have gone so fast. But it is a huge event, let's be honest. It | :39:50. | :39:53.
is probably the biggest event in the sporting calendar from an awards | :39:54. | :39:59.
ceremony point of view. I am glad that I am still here after 30 years | :40:00. | :40:07.
with this man Jimmy is an incredible talent. Are you excited? Yes, I have | :40:08. | :40:13.
got a massive fight on the horizon. I have been after it had tough years | :40:14. | :40:17.
now, and we have got just ten weeks to go. So I am very excited to see | :40:18. | :40:22.
what 2016 brings. I know you are used to making an entrance. So | :40:23. | :40:28.
tonight, I am sure you will be able to enjoy this occasion? This kind of | :40:29. | :40:33.
stuff I do not really like if I am being honest with you. Don't tell | :40:34. | :40:39.
anybody at home! I just get a wee bit embarrassed sometimes. But it is | :40:40. | :40:43.
all good fun. You two go and enjoy the reception. Another man who is in | :40:44. | :40:56.
the frame tonight is Chris Froome. For any cyclist I guess it is just | :40:57. | :41:04.
the pinnacle of our sport. COMMENTATOR: Chris Froome is | :41:05. | :41:06.
Britain's first two-time winner of the Tour de France! I have seen how | :41:07. | :41:11.
much work he puts in, how dedicated he is. You have got to put yourself | :41:12. | :41:20.
through hell just to be ready for the race itself. After three weeks | :41:21. | :41:22.
of racing you are with a group of guys who have been there fighting | :41:23. | :41:25.
with you the whole way through. It is pretty emotional. He is just a | :41:26. | :41:31.
gentleman, a super nice guy and I could not ride for a better | :41:32. | :41:35.
team-mate. It is Chris Froome who is smiling! Chris Froome, I mean, OK, | :41:36. | :41:44.
your sport is brutal, Nicola Adams. This guy puts himself through | :41:45. | :41:47.
physical pain to win that Tour de France. He had abuse hurled at him, | :41:48. | :41:56.
getting spat on and in one case having urine thrown at him. I think | :41:57. | :42:01.
what he has done this year is not even of this planet. Definitely not. | :42:02. | :42:06.
To go through all that and win is unbelievable. It is an achievement | :42:07. | :42:09.
in itself. Nobody really knows how it feels to go through all that and | :42:10. | :42:15.
come out the other end and win. He has done unbelievably well. On the | :42:16. | :42:19.
boxing front, we just heard from Carl Frampton, and his fight is in | :42:20. | :42:26.
February against Scott Quigg. I love Scott as well. What a golden era it | :42:27. | :42:32.
is, I have lost count how many champions we have got! Yes, was in | :42:33. | :42:37.
doing so well at the moment. It is unbelievable, I am just loving the | :42:38. | :42:42.
boxing. It is great. A lot of people in the business who climb between | :42:43. | :42:46.
the ropes and throw punches Dave Tyson Fury more of a chance against | :42:47. | :42:51.
Klitschko than most of us fans - how did you feel watching it when he | :42:52. | :42:55.
took those titles away from a man who had looked unbeatable on his | :42:56. | :42:59.
home turf? Aisle ways felt it was going to be a tough challenge. The | :43:00. | :43:03.
guy has been champion for 11 years. -- I always felt. You were expecting | :43:04. | :43:10.
him to put more of a fight up. I was wondering, was he injured, was there | :43:11. | :43:14.
something wrong? But Tyson Fury was better on the night. I do not care | :43:15. | :43:19.
what Tyson Fury says, what anybody says, we now have British | :43:20. | :43:23.
heavyweight boxing on a global scale. I think that will make them | :43:24. | :43:27.
fight each other automatically because of the dollar bills. I think | :43:28. | :43:31.
Josh is probably the most popular at the moment? Affinity. He is a really | :43:32. | :43:37.
nice guy. I trained alongside him at either way up to the Olympics. I | :43:38. | :43:40.
have seen him going from strength to strength. I do not believe we have | :43:41. | :43:45.
seen the best of Josh yet. There is a lot more to come from him. He is | :43:46. | :43:51.
still developing. You do some training with Jessica Ennis-Hill as | :43:52. | :43:57.
well - how does that work? I guess we just train in the same building, | :43:58. | :44:03.
so we see each other quite a lot and we get to talk to each other and we | :44:04. | :44:07.
try to motivate each other in training and see how we are all | :44:08. | :44:11.
ticking along and getting along with our training. People think we are | :44:12. | :44:20.
really far away from each other. But Claire is literally 2ft away from me | :44:21. | :44:24.
now. The amount of times I have wanted to meet that guy! Yes, but | :44:25. | :44:33.
you got Eamonn Holmes! Anyway, the world of sport and music are | :44:34. | :44:38.
combined tonight. Great to have you both here tonight. Rory, no pressure | :44:39. | :44:42.
on you tonight, no major pressure?! No major pressure on me tonight! I | :44:43. | :44:46.
am not up for the award but I am still here to have a good time and | :44:47. | :44:50.
show everyone what Belfast has to offer. How proud you that this huge | :44:51. | :44:57.
event is here in your city? Yes, it is fantastic. I have been excited | :44:58. | :45:01.
about it for a while since I have known that the BBC was going to | :45:02. | :45:05.
bring Spoty here. I am just excited and glad to be here. I think you can | :45:06. | :45:10.
see by the turnout from everyone how excited everybody is about it. And | :45:11. | :45:15.
great to have your mate Niall with you. I know you have had a few | :45:16. | :45:19.
rounds together - how has that been for you, Niall? | :45:20. | :45:22.
I'm two up. It's great to be here. Glad it is here in Belfast. It is a | :45:23. | :45:30.
show I've grown up watching. Great to be here and commemorate a | :45:31. | :45:34.
fantastic year in sport. Briefly, how does this compare to all the | :45:35. | :45:40.
showbiz and music events you've been to in terms of red carpet events? | :45:41. | :45:44.
It's something I've got used to, I guess. It's good to be here. You've | :45:45. | :45:52.
got a lot more people to speak to. Good luck tonight. At the moment | :45:53. | :45:59.
Tyson Fury has entered the red carpet. He beat Wladimir Klitschko | :46:00. | :46:06.
in his own back yard. He had to tear the foam out of the ring, rewrap | :46:07. | :46:11.
Klitschko's gloves to get a fair deal. Even after the fight, people | :46:12. | :46:15.
including myself, said the judges weren't going to give it to him. But | :46:16. | :46:22.
what he's done is he's managed to go over the mainland Europe and wrestle | :46:23. | :46:26.
the titles away from Klitschko and get them back in the Arena. There | :46:27. | :46:35.
are so many delicious fights now lined up in 2016 and 2017. We talk | :46:36. | :46:43.
about Joshua, about Haye coming back, but Fury is the man with the | :46:44. | :46:48.
belt. For all sorts of reasons he's been the one talked about. He said | :46:49. | :46:52.
he isn't going to do any interviews tonight. He's posed for the press. | :46:53. | :46:58.
This is the sporting year of Tyson Fury. On the very first day I laced | :46:59. | :47:06.
up a pair of gloves I was going to be the heavyweight champ of the | :47:07. | :47:11.
world and it became true. I was supported by my brothers. Everybody | :47:12. | :47:16.
believed in me from the first day. My dad used to follow me, used to | :47:17. | :47:25.
drive because he hated flying. When he fought Wladimir Klitschko a lot | :47:26. | :47:30.
of people didn't think he would achieve what he did. In boxing from | :47:31. | :47:37.
14 to 27 so long time. Into he's has brought back a lot of excitement in | :47:38. | :47:44.
boxing. No matter how many fights, it is not going to compete with that | :47:45. | :47:51.
night. Forget Lucy Bronze and Adam Peaty and Andy Murray, I'm with the | :47:52. | :47:56.
funny man, the football man, Eddie Izzard. Tell us what we are up to. | :47:57. | :48:04.
Well, I am patron of a sports volunteering charity called Join In. | :48:05. | :48:08.
And we work with the BBC Get Inspired. We are going to talk to | :48:09. | :48:12.
someone now nominated in Northern Ireland. Didn't end up being the | :48:13. | :48:16.
winner but they are all fantastic people. This is Danny Core. He does | :48:17. | :48:21.
a lot of great work in Northern Ireland. He's done a fantastic job. | :48:22. | :48:28.
Usually when you do this it would be through the old-fashioned phone box. | :48:29. | :48:35.
He put in 50p. I looks like a TARDIS, but we've invented Skype, | :48:36. | :48:38.
just the two of us here together, so we are now going to talk to Danny on | :48:39. | :48:46.
Skype. This is copyrighted to us. We know what you do but tell everybody | :48:47. | :48:51.
else who is watching this now, why we are talking to you today? It is a | :48:52. | :48:56.
bit of a surprise, this unsung hero thing. But I coach a community gym. | :48:57. | :49:04.
We coach kids from five years old to old couragers like me. We do some | :49:05. | :49:12.
youth work with young guys who've been involved in drugs and drink and | :49:13. | :49:17.
we give them a motivation to train and become coaches themselves. You | :49:18. | :49:21.
changed people's perceptions a bit here, Danny, as it is mixed martial | :49:22. | :49:27.
arts. It is what we see Conor McGregor doing. The last fight | :49:28. | :49:31.
didn't go to plan and it is brutal, but people don't see the other side | :49:32. | :49:38.
of it, which is the discipline. Wes, we have a lot of discipline and | :49:39. | :49:44.
respect. It is written on the wall and it's the first thing the kids | :49:45. | :49:47.
see. It is not all about the competition side. We take them | :49:48. | :49:50.
through personal development. Make them better people. Danny, it is | :49:51. | :49:55.
brilliant. This is something that's happening in the world, people are | :49:56. | :49:58.
seeing that if you can get people who've no mission in life and you | :49:59. | :50:02.
are giving them a mission, I've noticed that people if they have no | :50:03. | :50:07.
mission, they will get involved in antisocial behaviour or crime and | :50:08. | :50:10.
you are giving them a mission and making them feel good about | :50:11. | :50:12.
themselves. It is a very positive thing. Thank you so much for talking | :50:13. | :50:18.
to us. Hello by the way Mrs Core. How are you? Are you alright? Fine, | :50:19. | :50:23.
thanks. Is it four sons? Four sons yes. The handsome one in the black. | :50:24. | :50:31.
Hiya. And the Northern Ireland... How are you doing? And the cute one | :50:32. | :50:37.
in the red. And the one in the blue is like, oh my God, daddy, I can't | :50:38. | :50:43.
believe you put my on TV. Look at him! Hello everybody! This is his | :50:44. | :50:53.
identical twin. And there's a fighting family. And you can tell | :50:54. | :50:59.
them apart, one is in red and one is in blue? Pretty much yes. Thank you | :51:00. | :51:04.
for joining us. Quite a double act. I'm delighted to say on the | :51:05. | :51:13.
mezzanine level Dan Carter. World Cup winner, shall I go on? No, stop | :51:14. | :51:19.
there, you are embarrassing me. Your first time to Belfast. Wonderful to | :51:20. | :51:22.
have you here. And you are picking up an award Unfortunately I'm only | :51:23. | :51:28.
here for five or six hours before shooting back to train tomorrow in | :51:29. | :51:36.
France. Very honoured to be presented with the Sports | :51:37. | :51:39.
Personality of the Year sports person. A special thanks to my | :51:40. | :51:44.
team-mates that made it a dream for me. An immense achievement. I know | :51:45. | :51:50.
this man beside you is itching to get in. Well, well, well, there | :51:51. | :51:55.
should be a restaining order. I reckon. It is all about the team, | :51:56. | :52:00.
and I know. That were you that were you were getting better and better | :52:01. | :52:04.
individually as it went along? Do you get into the zone as a | :52:05. | :52:10.
professional sportsman? The last few weeks I was in the zone and all I | :52:11. | :52:16.
wanted to do was try and help my team win each game. Get to the | :52:17. | :52:20.
play-off stage, it is do or die and you have to professional well. | :52:21. | :52:23.
Reflecting back on it, I realised how much of an impact I made, but at | :52:24. | :52:29.
the time you are in the zone and doing whatever it took to help your | :52:30. | :52:33.
team get across the line. There's a great respect at that final whist | :52:34. | :52:37.
until rugby union but how nice was it to go, we've won the World Cup | :52:38. | :52:42.
outside of our country? We've went to the northern hemisphere and | :52:43. | :52:47.
triumphed? It was huge. It was a big motivating factor for us. Going into | :52:48. | :52:51.
the World Cup, the first one was winning back to back World Cups, | :52:52. | :52:55.
which no team has done before. The second was to be the first All | :52:56. | :52:59.
Blacks side to win a World Cup outside New Zealand. We had won two | :53:00. | :53:06.
prior to that but both in New Zealand. It was an extremely | :53:07. | :53:10.
challenging situation where the competition was so tough. To be able | :53:11. | :53:14.
to do that was really pleasing. Of course this isn't just about Clare's | :53:15. | :53:19.
sporting achievement. Look at me being an old bore asking about | :53:20. | :53:24.
sport. What's the question I have to ask? Who are you wearing? I have no | :53:25. | :53:30.
idea. No, it's a New Zealand company, so I'm supporting my roots, | :53:31. | :53:34.
and I can we designers in New Zealand. Still Lizzie Armitstead, | :53:35. | :53:38.
definitely. Dan thank you so much. Enjoy tonight. I hope you come back | :53:39. | :53:42.
to Belfast soon. Thank you. It is not all about the people who win | :53:43. | :53:46.
gold on the track or in the pool or whatever. It is about the unsung | :53:47. | :53:50.
heroes as well tonight. Nicola has been speaking to some of them. How | :53:51. | :53:56.
does it feel to be here today with the unsung heroes? I feel like you | :53:57. | :54:01.
should be interviewing these brilliant people other than me. The | :54:02. | :54:05.
Unsung Hero Award is such a fantastic award. These brilliant, | :54:06. | :54:09.
lovely people give up so much of their time and energy to volunteer | :54:10. | :54:11.
in grass roots sport. They are fantastic. One of these lovely | :54:12. | :54:15.
people will be going up on stage this evening to get the overall | :54:16. | :54:20.
award. For me it is really nice to be here with all the unsung heroes | :54:21. | :54:24.
and it is really nice to they are appreciating for all the hard work | :54:25. | :54:28.
we do as well. The most important thing for us is to make sure we say | :54:29. | :54:33.
thank you to these brilliant people without whom grass roots sport | :54:34. | :54:35.
wouldn't happen. The majority of sport is run by people who don't get | :54:36. | :54:40.
paid. They quite often are giving up so much of their time, they are | :54:41. | :54:44.
driving people around, washing clothes. Going out of their way to | :54:45. | :54:47.
do things so that people can participate in sport. For each one | :54:48. | :54:54.
person who volunteers in sport it helps 8.5 people participate. It is | :54:55. | :54:57.
really important that we support them and take the time to say thank | :54:58. | :55:01.
you for what they do. Excellent. Thank you. I think we have spoken to | :55:02. | :55:11.
just about everybody in the top 12 tonight, but one man remains, Max | :55:12. | :55:16.
Whitlock. World champion gymnast on the pommel horse. I know you've been | :55:17. | :55:21.
in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the last couple of weeks, spreading the | :55:22. | :55:25.
good news about gymnastics? Pretty much. I came out for a couple of | :55:26. | :55:31.
days. It was about visiting as many schools and gym clubs as I could to | :55:32. | :55:37.
make people more involved in gymnastics. I had a great reception. | :55:38. | :55:43.
I believe you discovered a couple of stars, one in particular called | :55:44. | :55:51.
Emily, who is only nine and beat you in a handstand competition? It was a | :55:52. | :55:55.
lot of fun. I did a lot of competitions and tried to get the | :55:56. | :56:00.
kids involved. The target was to inspire more to join. It was a | :56:01. | :56:03.
success. So you've seen a lot of talent here would you say? 100%, it | :56:04. | :56:11.
is great to see. It is nice to go to places where they didn't know me. I | :56:12. | :56:16.
got an amazing reception. At one school the teacher asked, who is | :56:17. | :56:21.
going to join gymnastics and a lot of hand went up. Did you want to say | :56:22. | :56:29.
I'm the diva here, I'm the Mariah carry of this show, I'm coming last? | :56:30. | :56:36.
No, it's been a busy day. Best of luck. You've been a history maker. | :56:37. | :56:45.
Thank you. Good luck. They said there'll be pandemonium on the red | :56:46. | :56:50.
carpet. I was in my element. A kid in a sweet shop I would describe | :56:51. | :56:54.
you. Fantastic to see so many names in Belfast from the world of sport | :56:55. | :56:57.
and entertainment. It is building towards a fantastic evening in the | :56:58. | :57:02.
SSA Arena just up the road. It was good. It is interesting to look | :57:03. | :57:05.
through all the different stories. It is hard to choose. I know that's | :57:06. | :57:11.
a cliche, but I come back to what I said earlier. There is no big | :57:12. | :57:14.
football tournament and I think that helps Sports Personality of the | :57:15. | :57:18.
Year, because we should be concentrating on world champions | :57:19. | :57:21.
like Adam Peaty, Lizzie Armitstead, Max Whitlock. It's good to see | :57:22. | :57:28.
athletics coming to the fore, with three contenders, Adam Peaty, and | :57:29. | :57:33.
Max Whitlock. Who was your favourite on the red carpet? You couldn't. | :57:34. | :57:38.
They were all my favourite. It is Lizzie Armitstead, we know that. You | :57:39. | :57:43.
should have seen his face when she came on the red carpet tonight. BBC | :57:44. | :57:50.
Sports Personality of the Year from Belfast. Thank you for watching our | :57:51. | :57:53.
red carpet coverage. Goodnight. | :57:54. | :57:59. |
