Ladies' Final Bowls World Indoor Championships

It's been a week of high drama at the Fred Olsen World bowls

Championship. There have been several central characters that

have been written out of the script. That is another one of the

favourites out of the World Championships. Paul Foster and Alex

Marshall regrouped in act two to regain their world pairs title.

Recovered from fluffed lines and an early exit from the singles

competition. Foster and Packwood could n't win the mixed pairs final.

Potters has another packed house as the leading ladies take stage.

Welcome to Potters. It has been a dramatic week and there is a

promise of more drama and tension to come. The third trophy is on the

line in the final of the ladies' singles. # Girls, girls, girls!

Stavrou against Alison Merrien. Today she takes on Karen Murray,

who edged out Rebecca Field. Can the girl from down under come out

on top this time? So Debbie going for her third title in four year,

Karen hoping to go one better than last year. Here is your MC, Richard

Match Play final and hoping to lift the trophy for the first time in

that. She doesn't have a heavy drive, has a controlled weight

that's a beauty! It is a back Murphy. In the groove style. Very

compact. Very much geared for the fast Aussie greens. So although

Karen wouldn't have the indoor experience that a lot of players do

have, although they do play indoor in Australia, she has won indoor

titles five fiem u times. She is coming from the very fast outdoor

greens, that are very similar to this indoor rink. So not a lot of

practice required to catch the weight. But she is very

good effort. It is still there for Karen Murphy. A little touch on the

green, that will make a double. If she takes a double, she will be

has just overplayed it. It is a good position. There is a chance

here for Karen Murphy to slide another one in and get a double.

Yes, if she wants to get back into the game, she needs to take this

Will she be tempted? There is a slight danger of pushing in the

couple of times. She tried to play it with the same controlled weight.

She should have been more aggressive to it. There wasn't a

lot of danger of losing any more shots. Always easy in the

commentary box though isn't it? Well it is. But it is not as if we

haven't been out there. You're still going strong. That is the

main thing. You're still in the quarter final and looking good.

Playing some good stuff. I think sometimes on the rink you can get

lulled into trying to play the perfect bowl. Karen did try to

the bowl away very smooth. Very low. Debbie stands up a lot more and

just bumps the ball a bit more. But she does it all the time, it is

consistent, that is the main thing. Pops up very quickly after the bowl

very good if you look at the Murphy bowl position down the rink, it is

covering the two red shot bowls, that back bowl is not going to be

disturb it. This is rally good. That is handy, because it is in

line. Not often you get a bigger target. That distance behind would

be good, because if Karen does get it is a matter of the connection on

the front bowl. Well, may have made second. It is going to be close. If

I was dby I would leave this. That is not east easy for Karen to get

at. -- it notice easy for Karen to get at. I would be inclined to draw

and go on the deep side. Not too overweight. Drift past and cover

the green bowl. A sensible shot. That will do nicely. Does Karen

have a strike on the green and hope to get a result. If it is three

the short one. Just slightly off target. And it looks like it is

going to be three shots. It is very close to it. That short bowl was

always a bad one, David. As soon as she put that there with the first

bowl it was covering the strike. She was right on target. But her

own bowl stopped her. That is the disadvantage of having one up the

centre. If you hate front bowl like that into head, it is more

fortunate than anything else. You don't play for one that is four

feet short. A lot of best players don't go for heavy drives and

played a more controlled weight to make sure they're in the target.

Accuracy is more important than pace on the portable rink.

frustration for Karen is it was her own bowl stopping her. This could

be three. Karen's looking concerned. No, it is just the two. No, three

it is. Well it is a nice position Debbie. Trying to keep it

controlled, because Karen will have to push hard now the next couple of

ends. Karen needs to get the opening delivery going. Hasn't put

a close bowl for a couple of ends now. Again she's overplayed this.

It is not a bad bowl, but in her position she needs a good close

much the better player. She is more consistent and even the all round

game of Karen Murphy isleting her on the draw. It is just whether she

could play well fluff to match Karen. -- enough to match Karen.

She has played a couple of good conversion shots, Debbie Stavrou.

She is talking to herself and trying to get herself going. Knows

she's a lot better than what we're and keeping it tight. Bowls in a

decent position there. Karen, you just need an inch or two on the

advised to tell players that, and the players appreciate it. Rebecca

Field is watching. She knows she is on camera. And she smiles. She is a

lovely girl. What a smile. One bowl from her. Karen Murphy needs a big

end. She just needs an end where she picks up two or three shot and

needs a lift. Maybe a big conversion shot, something like

that. She needs snog spark her into life. An -- she needs something to

spark her into life. Her body language hasn't been good. The body

language has been progressive. It is not her normal self. A lot of

head shaking and can still turn it around though. She is running out

couple of singles, whereas Karen needs a couple of doubles to go

into the last end level. This is an opportunity. You need to step up to

far away, it is not a time to go walk about. There is no point in

there is no doubt about that. But we have seen it all before. Karen

Murphy, she needs what to do to dig run the jack here. It is not easy

though. Even a heavy draw to it where she can rest a bowl and drop

off it for a shot. If she drops off and picks the jack up and gets a

good line again. How's the weight, Karen? Starting to diver under now.

It is very close to the jack. Pick it up for a double. She has got it.

That's the way to play it. A reaching draw to pick up the jack.

That is the lifeline that she needed. That has brought the

Aussies to life in the stand. She found a big bowl then. She needed

that. I would say this was a match- saver. A beautiful bowl, pulled the

jack for two A sh''s -- and she's back with a fighting chance.

terms of the excitement. There is a lot of tension at the moment. With

matches going down to the last bowl. She has got to draw this and with

good at the big shots. She moved the jack three or four inches, but

nudge. It rarely happens when you need it. When you need it, it does

not happen, but that was brilliant. It is game on. The first end of the

tie-break. All that has gone before does not matter. They have got to

clear their mind. It does not matter if you were the more

consistent player through the match, which Debbie Stavrou has been. If

you win I said by one shot or 10, it does not matter. She is such a

battler, Karen Murphy. Her whole life revolves around bowls. She is

looking lively now. She has been played three ends ago. It was

virtually a match lie against her, is in command of dissent. -- this

end. She has survived the last few ends and forced this match through.

Karen Murphy was scoring early, but first bowl for large periods. But

in the tie-break, she has got them right on the jack. It is the best

she has played. She will be well pleased there. Debbie Stavrou needs

to regroup. Five or six minutes ago, she was on the brink of winning it,

now she is on the brink of defeat. Karen Murphy could easily take the

championship. It is down to her ability to come out with the big

bowl at the right time. For large periods, Debbie Stavrou has been

the more consistent player. But that is what champions of all about.

For Karen Murphy, being second is not an option. It must be in the

blurred when they are born, the Australians. Very competitive. I

like that. That is not bad. One of the problems of Debbie's. -- all of

trying to draw her way out of trouble. Every time she has played

with pace, she has played it very well. I am inclined to think this

is definitely worth reaching. has got to decent bowls. -- two

have the chance to defend it. make your mind up time. She has

held on. She very nearly got a cut on it. I am sure Karen Murphy can't

believe this. Half an hour ago, she looked down and out, the body

language was poor, very inconsistent. And now, suddenly,

she is two away from winning the going deeper. That is just to make

sure. There is no point in doing much with that. That the needs to

move the Queen away, clean. -- Debbie needs to move the green away.

You have just got to hit the target and head for the best. -- hope for

the best. The Australians do not want to look! They are nervous.

They will be the first ones on their feet if this misses. This is

a very hard shot to play, the last bowl. The line is wider. It is too

wide. It will be a single to Karen Murphy. The Australian, the runner

up last year, has come back from the dead. She lost the first set,

but she won the second set, and got over the line with a tremendous

bowl. She takes the tie-break, 2-0. What a great result for Karen

Murphy. She is up with the Australian supporters, to say thank

you. Wonderful stuff, she played really well. It is Karen Murphy who

takes the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Ladies Match Play Championship. The

Lady From Sydney has lifted the title. When it comes to tackling

and getting a win out of nothing, she is as good as anybody. Debbie

Stavrou played well through the game, but Karen Murphy produced the

big bowls when she needed to. Debbie Stavrou looking comfortable

in the first set, 824 up. She did not need to worry about the last

end. Her last delivery. That closed it down. She got a double. She won,

10-4. Really, if you can think about this, the last bowl, the

championship against Karen Murphy, looking to draw the shot. She just

gets it. That is enough. She got the double, Debbie Stavrou missed,

and we are into the tie-break. Debbie Stavrou had to make a

correction. This is the last delivery, she passed it -- she

pushed it too much, and Karen You must have felt in the second

you did that again today. I played a bit better in the final today. I

had to, because Debbie Stavrou is a class opponent. I feel like I have

stolen it a bit, to be fair. She played better than I did. You have

got some support here, how does it feel to do it in front of them?

Cruise Lines Ladies' World Matchplay champion, the one, the

only Karen Murphy! One More Time, ladies and gentlemen,

she has done it on Australia Day, the 2012 Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

Ladies' World Match Play champion, Everybody battling for a spot in

the quarter-finals. One man already David Gourlay is enjoying every day

songs in his career, and he is in position form. He has already

secured one half of the mixed pairs title, and he bids for a semi-final

place after a win over Jonathan Ross. We caught up with him ahead

of his quarter-final to find out more about the Scottish master of

the rink. I live in Glasgow. I am also a

member of the Prestwick club. I grew up in a small mining village

in Esher. The bowling green was a focal point. My parents were both

Commonwealth Games gold medallists, my grandparents were good bowlers,

so if you cannot beat them, join them! It has been my life, it is a

major part of my life. I am employed as a head coach for the

Scottish bowls organisation. This is leading up to the Commonwealth

Games in Glasgow, preparing an elite squad for the Games.

Previously, I owned and ran a bowls retail shot in Glasgow. My best

achievement has got to be my world singles championship success in

1996. I was thinking of giving up, I was struggling to break through

at international level, I entered the competition as a wild card, and

I won it. Last year, it was not a happy

experience. He was a first-round loser to the local hero, but he

recovered well, and he contested the final of the Welsh Open in the

same year. His work ethic in preparing remains undiminished.

This year, I have put a lot of work in, a lot of practice. I have not

had a lot of match practice, my job has taken up a lot of time, but I

have practised a lot on the green, so I am looking forward to it. The

practice here has gone well, the green suits me. So far, so good.

Another veteran stands in his way for a place in the semi-finals. The

1990 winner, John Price. He beat Ross Owen in the last round, and

there is no doubt that both believe they could have another title in

them. It is 15 years since I won the

world singles, and that seems like a long time. It would be nice to be

Price. I want to reflect on what we have seen today, it was a fantastic

match. Amazing stuff from Karen Murphy to remain in it when she

looked dead and buried. It was the same against Rebecca Field, she was

struggling, and it looked like Rebecca Field would get there, but

Karen Murphy is the best player in the world when it comes to playing

She managed to pull it off. She had been struggling for most of the

game. I expected her to draw the shot. It was a super bowl. How many

times out of 10 would somebody pull off a shot like that under

pressure? Probably two or three. If they are playing well, six or seven.

But the degree of difficulty to turn the jacket, it is immeasurable.
