The APPLAUSE Hello everybody and welcome to the

:00:35.:00:42.

Potters leisure resort on the used coast of England at Hopton on Sea.

:00:43.:00:50.

Seven days of top-quality bowls, four trophies up for grabs, the

:00:51.:00:54.

first of those up for grabs this afternoon with the final of the

:00:55.:01:02.

pairs. It is the big day for Scotland. First up the pairs world

:01:03.:01:11.

final which is an all tartan affair. Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett

:01:12.:01:14.

against good friends Colin Walker and Ronnie Duncan. And then it is

:01:15.:01:21.

the turn of the defending singles champion Alex Marshall MBA to begin

:01:22.:01:25.

his quest for a magnificent seventh title. It promises to be an epic

:01:26.:01:32.

afternoon of entertainment at the home of bowls. -- MBE. We start with

:01:33.:01:48.

the pairs. They are both former singles winners but now they are

:01:49.:01:52.

teaming up trying to win this title for the first time together.

:01:53.:02:07.

It is the home of bowls, Potters. There is no arena like it anywhere

:02:08.:02:18.

in the world. 1200 people and extras. It does not get any better

:02:19.:02:26.

than that. It is the first thing I look to come to, it is absolutely

:02:27.:02:31.

amazing. People who have not been the foremost come and watch. The

:02:32.:02:35.

spectators are fabulous, win or lose. It is the first event we play

:02:36.:02:44.

down here, we reached the final before, unfortunately we lost but to

:02:45.:02:47.

get back into the final it has been a long time coming. I think it is

:02:48.:02:53.

six years ago we formed as a partnership and we got to the final.

:02:54.:03:01.

Now we're in the top 16 and we have decided to partner up. This year it

:03:02.:03:08.

seems to be going well. The world singles is probably the event, we do

:03:09.:03:11.

not have a lot of chances to play together at this level. To be the

:03:12.:03:18.

world pairs champion would be wonderful. Colin has been here a few

:03:19.:03:25.

years now with Ronnie, but think we are playing well enough and we are

:03:26.:03:29.

forward to it. Standing in their way, Colin Walker and Ronnie Duncan

:03:30.:03:33.

who had to come through a qualifying event in Falkirk just to get here.

:03:34.:03:38.

They have caused some shocks including the defeat of Paul Foster

:03:39.:03:43.

and Alex Marshall in the semifinals. They are bidding to become the first

:03:44.:03:46.

unseeded pair to win the title since 2004. They have been the best

:03:47.:03:51.

friends for the first part of two decades. -- for the best part.

:03:52.:04:12.

Around about 16 years I think we have been friends. It has been a

:04:13.:04:19.

long partnership. Some good successes and I think you learn from

:04:20.:04:23.

your mistakes when you have been as long together. I have always led the

:04:24.:04:29.

partnership and Colin has always skipped. Because we have played with

:04:30.:04:33.

each other in pairs, triples and fours we know each other's game like

:04:34.:04:40.

the back of a hand. We are very comfortable playing as a partnership

:04:41.:04:47.

together. It has been a great run so far and then somebody tells you you

:04:48.:04:51.

are playing against the Commonwealth Games and world champions. You

:04:52.:04:54.

cannot get much better than that. These two guys are good friends as

:04:55.:05:00.

well. I think that makes it even harder to play against these guys

:05:01.:05:05.

when you are friendly with them. But we dug deep and we got there in the

:05:06.:05:10.

end. It should be a great game, Stewart and Darren both former

:05:11.:05:14.

singles champions they have obviously won here before. They are

:05:15.:05:18.

all so again international colleagues in the Scotland team and

:05:19.:05:23.

they are friends so it is certainly not going to be any easier than when

:05:24.:05:29.

we played Alec Sample. It is another one of those things -- Alex and

:05:30.:05:38.

Paul. We will need to play well. We go in as underdogs so obviously the

:05:39.:05:42.

crowd likes a good game so it would be nice if the crowd could be on

:05:43.:05:46.

your side and hopefully we can compete well against them and get

:05:47.:05:50.

close to them and put them under pressure. And hopefully we can do it

:05:51.:05:58.

at the end of the day. We have won the Scottish pairs and we are the

:05:59.:06:00.

current British pairs holders so to add the world indoors pairs title

:06:01.:06:09.

would be a dream come true. You have met the men competing on the blue

:06:10.:06:16.

rink this afternoon, one way or another Scotland will be

:06:17.:06:21.

celebrating. It is time now to say hello to Richard Beck, MC this

:06:22.:06:27.

afternoon. Yes it is indeed an all Scottish affair and now our first

:06:28.:06:32.

pair, the reigning British champions, Ronnie Walker and Colin

:06:33.:06:33.

Duncan. APPLAUSE And now, ladies and in command, will

:06:34.:07:03.

you please welcome the 2013 finalists, hoping to go one better

:07:04.:07:08.

today, ladies and gentlemen, your appreciation, please, for Stewart

:07:09.:07:09.

Anderson and Darren Burnett. Lovely atmosphere inside the

:07:10.:07:35.

auditorium here at Potters and we have former world champion Andy

:07:36.:07:40.

Thomson alongside David Corkill in the commentary box. Set for a great

:07:41.:07:47.

week. HOOTER COMMENTATOR: Sorry about that, bit

:07:48.:07:52.

of a problem. LAUGHTER I think it will be an interesting

:07:53.:07:57.

game. Obviously Colin said they are underdogs, however they are playing

:07:58.:08:03.

well. Taking out Paul Foster and Alex Marshall I cannot really see

:08:04.:08:11.

Ronnie Duncan and Colin being too much of an underdogs. They have

:08:12.:08:15.

taken out the world champions. I think it is going to be very, very

:08:16.:08:21.

tight. I agree, David, should be a cracker.

:08:22.:08:43.

Good steady start for both pairs, that is what they are aiming for.

:08:44.:08:50.

APPLAUSE All of these players, elite squad

:08:51.:09:59.

players for the Scottish international team. Ronnie and Colin

:10:00.:10:02.

are going off to New Zealand very shortly. They will be absent from

:10:03.:10:11.

the Scottish indoor team which might give the other countries a bit of a

:10:12.:10:17.

help. As well as Colin and Rowley, Iain Maclean and one or two others

:10:18.:10:21.

are going to be missing. John prices taking them away. -- John Price is

:10:22.:10:35.

taking them away. Chance here. There is going to be pressure on Darren,

:10:36.:10:37.

they could be three shot down. Just struggling for weight. Taking

:10:38.:10:51.

one away. Chance for Colin, just dropping

:10:52.:11:41.

short. Spare shot. Jacquelin 29 metres. -- jack length

:11:42.:12:31.

29 metres. Quite a common feature I think throughout this game. Both

:12:32.:12:36.

pairs favouring the slightly longer length bull.

:12:37.:12:47.

Good adjustment that you would expect him to reach the jack and

:12:48.:13:39.

even pass it. This is pressure, if he gets the ball -- if he gets this

:13:40.:13:47.

marvel in Colin is under pressure. Good example of what you are doing,

:13:48.:13:51.

you're trying to lengthen the jack and get up to it. That takes the

:13:52.:14:00.

front bowls out of play. Nice shot here for Colin on the forehand side.

:14:01.:14:20.

Good line. It is all about weight, trying to get back to the jack. Well

:14:21.:14:50.

played. Problematic for Colin, he could take the bowls out but the

:14:51.:14:57.

jack is likely to move. Certainly not going to be easy to draw red. I

:14:58.:15:02.

think he is sticking to the draw. He had the choice to drive. -- to draw

:15:03.:15:16.

it. I do not think he is there. Just needed another two feet mat. -- on

:15:17.:15:24.

that. Definite spare a chance opportunity, last bowl of the end,

:15:25.:15:30.

no reply if you pop one in. These are the ones that add up throughout

:15:31.:15:32.

a game. Not quite. Both missed chances. Both

:15:33.:15:57.

pairs will be happy with this, good start. Both on the board. Especially

:15:58.:16:06.

over 11 ends, two sets, more than enough to separate the two pairs but

:16:07.:16:13.

of course we have three and tie-break -- three end tie-break if

:16:14.:16:23.

required, so potential 25 ends. Not many spare seats, David. It is very

:16:24.:16:28.

popular, the pairs events. That is very uncharacteristic of

:16:29.:17:30.

Stewart Anderson. Very much so. Normally very consistent on the

:17:31.:17:39.

jack. If he misses one he is normally making the adjustment. Just

:17:40.:17:46.

took too much off, you expect Ronnie to add another here. Just struggles

:17:47.:17:53.

to get back to centre rink although this is looking pretty good. Always

:17:54.:18:09.

useful there. Darren slightly prefers a backhand in this

:18:10.:18:16.

direction. Trying to get a good second bowl in. He has a strong bias

:18:17.:18:21.

bowl. I do not think he is on this one. Oh

:18:22.:18:43.

dear. What is happening here, three shortfalls? Shaking his head, this

:18:44.:18:53.

is a bad end from them. Big chance for Colin. He is calling it past the

:18:54.:19:06.

front one, it is definitely in. There is nothing behind the head.

:19:07.:19:12.

Running bowl. Forehand draw. There is room.

:19:13.:19:25.

That is a great bowl from Darren Burnett. Darren is three or four

:19:26.:19:42.

inches off. He was looking to cut down the count. Getting shot is an

:19:43.:19:53.

extra bonus. However the position is all about Ronnie and Colin has a

:19:54.:19:57.

good chance of running through this head. Absolutely, with weight, to

:19:58.:20:03.

clean it out for free. Looks like he is under. Did not get the lucky rub.

:20:04.:20:15.

That was an escape. Good goal by Darryl -- Darren Burnett. Shows the

:20:16.:20:22.

difficulty of playing those running bowls. Those are the bowls you do

:20:23.:20:34.

not want to get sucked into that you have to play them. That control

:20:35.:20:38.

weight, trying to get through on to the jack.

:20:39.:20:49.

Favourite length for Darren and Stewart, 29.5. They tend to playful

:20:50.:21:02.

lengths most games. -- they tend to play full lengths will stop that is

:21:03.:21:15.

Colin Walker was a son Cian and his wife Morag. Julie Forrest in the

:21:16.:21:24.

background. Julie in her first time out Potters. They have played well

:21:25.:21:30.

in the mixed pairs. It should be a good final tomorrow.

:21:31.:21:41.

Certainly looking better. Well played, Stewart Anderson.

:21:42.:21:59.

Slightly better heads coming in this direction. Players getting bowls

:22:00.:22:10.

close. On the forehand which is unusual this way, most players in

:22:11.:22:22.

this event play on the backhand. This is four of the best players in

:22:23.:22:29.

Scotland, indoor and outdoor. Darren Burnett and Stewart Anderson worked

:22:30.:22:40.

in Cyprus just before Christmas. For two and a half weeks, making sure

:22:41.:22:43.

their team qualified for the World Championships in Christchurch in

:22:44.:22:51.

December. I believe Darren and Stewart got the gold medal in the

:22:52.:22:56.

triples. Suitably successful. Along with Neil Speirs.

:22:57.:23:10.

Colin is having a look. He must have this. APPLAUSE

:23:11.:23:14.

Great bowl. The trail short, quite a difficult

:23:15.:23:34.

shot normally on the carpet and Colin played well. I think with this

:23:35.:23:39.

distance you have more of a chance of making those kind of trail shots.

:23:40.:23:45.

This gives you a little bit better chance, the longer length. Just a

:23:46.:23:51.

draw here for Darren, trying to draw the winner.

:23:52.:24:06.

I think he has missed his line. Two opportunities here for Colin to draw

:24:07.:24:18.

another one. If his little bit widely could ease the green bowl

:24:19.:24:24.

away and make three out of it. I thought it was just the one. He can

:24:25.:24:28.

draw for three. Certainly put this on wide. Does not

:24:29.:24:46.

want to push the green bowling for second bowl. If he comes around it

:24:47.:24:51.

he'll be good but you don't want to touch it. Stop an inch short.

:24:52.:25:27.

Go on, finish this. Right up. Very good. APPLAUSE

:25:28.:26:22.

Great reply from Stewart Anderson. Two of the best leads around the

:26:23.:26:29.

British Isles, indoor and outdoor. No doubt about that, Stewart as you

:26:30.:26:33.

say in the elite squad, I am sure he will probably be selected in the

:26:34.:26:37.

final five for New Zealand at the end of this year. However Stewart

:26:38.:26:50.

does skip for Scotland. Greatly. Very, very small gap. Two options.

:26:51.:27:10.

Much safer shot. I agree, I think he said there was a small gap that if

:27:11.:27:13.

he does touch if it will move into the red. He wants to slip the short

:27:14.:27:24.

one. He has not posted to overthrow no damage done. Another third or so

:27:25.:27:31.

and I think that is why Darren have the option to play the forehand. He

:27:32.:27:38.

knew the weight and the line and on the back and they have been dropping

:27:39.:27:46.

short. You can hear Ronnie saying all you need is a foot of running

:27:47.:27:50.

and the jack should spring to the back red one.

:27:51.:28:01.

He has green it. It is a matter of weight whether he has enough to do

:28:02.:28:19.

the damage. Very good bowl. It is one of those ones where you just

:28:20.:28:23.

want to get the thin edge and he hit it absolutely plumb Centre bowl.

:28:24.:28:31.

Colin shaking his head, he knew he was slightly heavy. It was a good

:28:32.:28:34.

bowl of just a yard over. Not sure about this one. Mostly

:28:35.:29:05.

because of his line. He needs to this Darren's last bowl. That is a

:29:06.:29:13.

chance. I would expect Darren to add another. He has had two pops at it.

:29:14.:29:33.

He is safe as houses. Colin Walker just a bit unlucky hitting that two

:29:34.:29:45.

solid. I think Darren and Stewart did have

:29:46.:30:15.

a chat thereabout the jack length. The final conclusion was, let's keep

:30:16.:30:24.

it long again. No reason not to. As the game progresses one of the

:30:25.:30:28.

players might think about a change. They are both currently happy on the

:30:29.:30:29.

full length. Great line. The line was absolutely

:30:30.:31:06.

perfect. Though short. Yes, anything after his own bowl or

:31:07.:31:30.

beyond will be good. Just dipping into it. The thing is it is a good

:31:31.:31:37.

ball at this level against these guys. He probably wanted it just

:31:38.:31:43.

slightly further, as you say it is 14 inches short, it is a good bowl.

:31:44.:31:49.

His line is good, it is all about pace. He still needs to hurry. Yes,

:31:50.:31:59.

he has made it. That is what you would expect. Walker. Walking down,

:32:00.:32:12.

the inform man, he has told me he is not the manager, he is a four-man.

:32:13.:32:18.

They will properly be watching, will we tell them about the interviews

:32:19.:32:24.

and make up that being done. A particularly tidy shade of eyeliner.

:32:25.:32:32.

You know all about that David. The guys will be giving him a hard time

:32:33.:32:37.

when he gets back. Once again I think that Darren Burnett is very

:32:38.:32:41.

close to drawing the winner here. He falls in and he has got the shot.

:32:42.:32:47.

Yes, that is the winner. He is playing well. He has been playing

:32:48.:32:52.

well for the last week or so in different events. Also in the mixed

:32:53.:33:04.

pairs final as well. Two finals, and he is still going in the single.

:33:05.:33:09.

This is Greg Harlow to play in the singles, I think that will be a

:33:10.:33:12.

really good game. That is a tough one. Better. Yes he is

:33:13.:33:25.

acknowledging, I think he has got the shot. Stewart is looking at

:33:26.:33:36.

possibly taking the two Red Bull is out, you knows how good Darren is

:33:37.:33:44.

with that weighted ball. Chances here, I cannot really see it going

:33:45.:33:49.

wrong. The two balls will disappear but it is just how many green ones

:33:50.:33:55.

will go at the same time and that is where the difficulty is. They are

:33:56.:34:02.

one up front, they had to think about whether they are prepared to

:34:03.:34:07.

attack this with the possibility of losing more than one at this end. I

:34:08.:34:13.

think they would be lucky to lose more than one, with the strike

:34:14.:34:18.

however Darren has played such a good opening ball, they might just

:34:19.:34:24.

stick to the draw. -- opening bowl. I think that is what he's going to

:34:25.:34:31.

go for, drawing the women are. Yes it is also a factor, too handy, just

:34:32.:34:40.

one in it. It is not a disaster comedy has got a chance with this if

:34:41.:34:44.

he runs the distance. It is going to be a lack in pace, run of the line.

:34:45.:34:51.

Final target. Just needed another 15 inches. Seeing the green bowl at the

:34:52.:35:02.

bottom of the screen, fresh start, count to all three.

:35:03.:35:17.

-- two or three. Good weight. Good effort, give it a chance. All things

:35:18.:35:33.

very tight, ?6, 5-5, five games to go. -- six ends. Five ends to go.

:35:34.:36:00.

The Jack length is 28 and a half metres. There is not really an awful

:36:01.:36:10.

lot happening between the two Jack lengths. At some stage of the game,

:36:11.:36:15.

if it starts to go wrong, they will switch to 23 or 24

:36:16.:36:26.

metres to make a change. It is a decent start. At both stage they are

:36:27.:36:30.

both playing quite well at this length so neither is wanting to

:36:31.:36:31.

change. It has got the right pace now, it

:36:32.:36:47.

has got the right pace. Ease up, ease up. Yes.

:36:48.:37:04.

Anything on his last bolt is good. Suggesting it is a bit heavy. He

:37:05.:37:15.

knew that out of the hand, it is a good sign. Just slightly heavy,

:37:16.:37:20.

indicated he had maybe pushed this one a little bit. Good smooth

:37:21.:37:28.

delivery from Stuart Anderson comedy gets the ball away well.

:37:29.:37:44.

It could be a second. They have got to force it back to the right-hand

:37:45.:37:51.

side, it is now blocked out. The call-out is very, very close to

:37:52.:38:02.

the second. Darren gave the comment, I have no

:38:03.:38:43.

idea. It usually means he is close. It is not a good sign, but not

:38:44.:38:50.

far-away. That one might just have dropped away. I think that last bolt

:38:51.:38:56.

has given Colin problems. If there are three in a deal, definitely

:38:57.:39:03.

coming down with the weight. Ronnie suggesting that the last bolt may

:39:04.:39:07.

well be in, you are right, he is two all three down. The options, looking

:39:08.:39:14.

to come through here, if he does make contact on that, even that

:39:15.:39:20.

bowl, will give him the angle into the jack. If he brings it all of the

:39:21.:39:26.

way through to hear or beyond. That is good. And of course we have got

:39:27.:39:31.

the re-spot position which is over this direction. Lots of things

:39:32.:39:36.

available. I agree, I think it is worth being positive, both of the

:39:37.:39:41.

green bowls are in the line of the draw, this will be something to play

:39:42.:39:50.

with. I think that he is still sticking to the draw, this is very

:39:51.:39:54.

difficult on the way in, he could easily get blocked out here. That is

:39:55.:40:05.

a good bowl. That is a great bowl from Colin Walker. It looked as if

:40:06.:40:10.

he was going to get blocked out, a clear path on side, it looks as

:40:11.:40:16.

though, he is just inside, it is a winner, well played. One inch away

:40:17.:40:25.

from losing three there. The problem is reversed for Darren now. He has

:40:26.:40:33.

got two back balls against him. I would agree, the ball onto the jack

:40:34.:40:39.

is two or three down. He pushes the red ball onto the jack, varies

:40:40.:40:44.

trouble. If we are looking at it, we are going to draw, a little touch on

:40:45.:40:50.

the jack would be very beneficial. The difficulty is, it is these two

:40:51.:40:55.

balls on the back, that is the issue, they have to be careful that

:40:56.:41:00.

the jack does not run through. I think that Stewart is indicating,

:41:01.:41:06.

normally good at these running bowls. Punched the ball through the

:41:07.:41:11.

gap, if you miss that you might get the jack. He has been very positive,

:41:12.:41:22.

you don't want the ball onto the jack. He is under, that is

:41:23.:41:28.

fortunate, I don't think it has cost him anything. The one at the back,

:41:29.:41:30.

savouring that one. Once again, Ronnie and Colin did

:41:31.:42:06.

have a little chat. Running the jack. The answer is, keep it long.

:42:07.:42:18.

Jack length, 29 metres. Come on, all of the way, great lying

:42:19.:43:03.

there. In the middle, there we come. Good.

:43:04.:43:18.

This is for one. Still heading up. OK. You like, seven inches. String a

:43:19.:43:42.

better one. It is interesting seeing these two skies competing against

:43:43.:43:48.

each other, because the lead position, is on offer for New

:43:49.:43:54.

Zealand. It certainly is. One player obviously, missing from the team,

:43:55.:43:56.

from Glasgow. It is a position, that I think that

:43:57.:44:08.

Ronnie and Stuart are properly buying for, and I think Stewart is

:44:09.:44:13.

in pole position but I think a lot can happen. It is just a draw here

:44:14.:44:22.

for Colin Walker. Seven inches short, Stewart Anderson. That is the

:44:23.:44:31.

target. Trying to beat that bowl. He is indicating that is heavy, he is a

:44:32.:44:44.

bit quick on that one. Darren playing his favourite backhand in

:44:45.:44:48.

that direction, he prefers this side of the carpet. Clear run, he scores.

:44:49.:44:58.

Yes, that is the second. Behind the jack. Rest to get to

:44:59.:45:08.

number one. With his bowls, it is a good swinging forehand. Ronny giving

:45:09.:45:19.

this a bit of attention, he needs to stop, I think he is still a bit

:45:20.:45:26.

quick. Touching the jack. I don't think it has made any difference to

:45:27.:45:39.

the two. World Darren Burnett, drawing on the forehand, that was an

:45:40.:45:46.

open forehand. It has got to be a forehand raw, there is no point

:45:47.:45:52.

giving the shot away, it is a nice open forehand. I know he does prefer

:45:53.:45:56.

to bat but I think he has got to change here. A chance of a three, it

:45:57.:46:05.

will be the first treble of the match, a special opportunity. Both

:46:06.:46:11.

have had chances to add, to make three and they have not added them.

:46:12.:46:16.

This looks better, like the third shortcoming in. Gentles gently, you

:46:17.:46:19.

don't want the jack. APPLAUSE Never see the bowls coming in, it

:46:20.:46:35.

does not want any movement on the jack, just touching it. It still

:46:36.:46:37.

counts as three. It is the first time there has been

:46:38.:47:09.

made shot gap between the pair. It is vital that they score this end.

:47:10.:47:26.

Come on, up here. OK. Really good, it has dropped round, it in this

:47:27.:47:57.

area, it is really good. A lot of things very good there? Yes I think

:47:58.:48:01.

that Darren has basically said that he is very happy with this position,

:48:02.:48:07.

anything behind the jack is good. He is urging this ball on. Is looking

:48:08.:48:12.

for this want to come in behind the jack. That is what he wanted, as

:48:13.:48:18.

long as it did not finish jack high. Set your skip up. Add the pressure

:48:19.:48:28.

to the opposition. We always think that the ninth end is critical. But

:48:29.:48:33.

Hind, the team cannot really afford to lose the shot. -- behind that,

:48:34.:48:38.

the team cannot really afford to lose the shot. I agree David, this

:48:39.:48:50.

is a vital end for that man. They are obviously going to anticipate

:48:51.:48:54.

what Colin is going to play, he may go for the spot here. Colin Walker

:48:55.:48:58.

in a bit of trouble. He has gone high, he has gone for

:48:59.:49:22.

the spot. Darren realises, he is going to have

:49:23.:49:32.

to attack that, he cannot afford to lose spots. It is covered now. It is

:49:33.:49:40.

not a big target either for Colin, this is not easy. If you get a big

:49:41.:49:46.

crunch on the jack you will get a result for its. They are going to

:49:47.:49:50.

jam the jack against the back ball, in the hope of getting it moved.

:49:51.:49:56.

Close to this. It needs to come back. He has taken one out, second

:49:57.:50:02.

best. The value of that green ball being behind the jack, there was no

:50:03.:50:05.

other damage that was going to be done. You have got the spot there,

:50:06.:50:17.

it is just a case, kicking it, it is just the same. We can see three red

:50:18.:50:28.

balls, there. That is the thing with these guys, they are so tactically

:50:29.:50:35.

aware. They are not going to make mistakes on the shot selection.

:50:36.:50:40.

Similar fit. Darren says it is a long way to run.

:50:41.:51:03.

It does not look too bad from here. That looks pretty good. Bend away

:51:04.:51:10.

now, bend away now. He is really not sure about that one. He was playing

:51:11.:51:14.

it well. There were a couple of times where he wasn't sure, he

:51:15.:51:16.

didn't know. Two Green. So that is a big bowl, in

:51:17.:51:32.

the context of this set, he needs to make a connection. Once again, it is

:51:33.:51:45.

not easy. Not much of a target. He needs to push on his own bowl to

:51:46.:51:51.

take the second away, he has got it. It was not far away from the target.

:51:52.:52:02.

He was getting nothing for being high. A reasonable results, taking

:52:03.:52:11.

one out. 9-6. -- a reasonable results.

:52:12.:52:29.

The players at this level will err on the right side to get a

:52:30.:52:35.

percentage shot, Collingwood would have loved to have scrunched the

:52:36.:52:42.

jack there,. He was in the target area, but it was not a big target,

:52:43.:52:46.

it was a single ball, so he did quite well to get a single ball over

:52:47.:52:51.

that. However, they know that they must score this entry keeper set

:52:52.:53:02.

going. -- this end to keep the set going. APPLAUSE

:53:03.:53:21.

Jack is about six inches. Stewart is just likely starting to wind the

:53:22.:53:28.

Leeds battle. That was a good ball. -- win the leader's battle. That is

:53:29.:53:38.

going to be good. Once again. Starting to dominate the front-end.

:53:39.:53:57.

Just over it. Yes Colin has faced a couple of difficult heads, and has

:53:58.:54:10.

had a very difficult draw earlier in the set. The same with the free.

:54:11.:54:19.

Well, Darren and Stewart thinking about this, I don't think Darren

:54:20.:54:22.

needs to go anywhere near this. They have got a very good shot. It is

:54:23.:54:29.

just leaving a shoulder. The advantage of the backhand is that

:54:30.:54:33.

you can get into the red ball, dropping down, going past the Red

:54:34.:54:37.

Bull, two or three different options there. -- Red Bull.

:54:38.:54:41.

Stewart is asking for a shop there. You get paid extra. LAUGHTER

:54:42.:55:01.

. No he doesn't. Believe me. He is taking the forehand side, spinning

:55:02.:55:05.

the jack in this direction. That is a good enough call, he will just be

:55:06.:55:11.

staying away from the head. Let Colin do all of the damage. It was a

:55:12.:55:22.

good cover ball, it does not cover the re-spot position. This is hard.

:55:23.:55:34.

That is hard, Ronnie. He is almost done, asking for a bit of yard. Yes,

:55:35.:55:41.

I think he is trying to develop something with the first bowl. He is

:55:42.:55:47.

trying to develop something for your next, almost a two bold type shot

:55:48.:55:53.

here. Building their head up, if he builds up a yard on this, he will

:55:54.:55:59.

never get it back. That was the wrong choice of shot, that was never

:56:00.:56:04.

going to go back. Just holding off all of the time. I don't think that

:56:05.:56:15.

is going to re-spot either. We see Stewart Anderson's foot, looking as

:56:16.:56:18.

if it is the best spot for the ball now. What

:56:19.:56:32.

he is looking at is the re-spot position, varies one there, and one

:56:33.:56:41.

there. If the jack goes, who is going to line the shot? It is

:56:42.:56:45.

difficult to tell but it looks like green on one side and read to the

:56:46.:56:51.

other. I think he has got it covered the other side now. Leaving the head

:56:52.:57:01.

alone, not trying to win the set on this end. Happy to be four up

:57:02.:57:08.

playing the final end. Trying to encourage this one, it looks good.

:57:09.:57:11.

You cannot see the re-spot, that is from six inches. There is a murmur

:57:12.:57:17.

in the crowd but it deserved a digital bit of a clap I think. It is

:57:18.:57:24.

a tough one. They are hard. Well Colin, this is difficult, I think

:57:25.:57:28.

this is almost a draw, I don't see how he could score any other. He is

:57:29.:57:38.

certainly on a different line, this one. He is playing with weight, this

:57:39.:57:44.

is so difficult. He just needs to hold on to get to the jack. He is

:57:45.:57:50.

not going to make it. Just underneath. The draw wasn't

:57:51.:58:03.

far-away. On that little run now of 311, almost guaranteeing the set.

:58:04.:58:09.

Slightly underneath, probably only one inch or two inches on the line

:58:10.:58:10.

would have helped that. Start to work, bend and run, bend

:58:11.:58:54.

and run. It is precisely what you want, from your lead, when you are

:58:55.:59:03.

up. The peril of them are playing well now. A change of tactics from

:59:04.:59:10.

Ronnie and Colin. It is going to be hard to get four. -- the pair of

:59:11.:59:21.

them are playing well now. APPLAUSE That is a super

:59:22.:59:26.

Darren, more or less saying to Stewart, just pack the head, make it

:59:27.:59:45.

difficult. Come on, run, come to Stewart, run-on Stewart, run-on

:59:46.:59:55.

Stewart. , That is very good, changing on the backhand, and the

:59:56.:00:00.

wrong thing about this, you can see through the rings, that they are

:00:01.:00:04.

very close, you just cannot afford to be short with this bowl.

:00:05.:00:11.

Who needs to hurry to get past the green ones. Well, that is almost the

:00:12.:00:28.

four gone. He realises that. It is amazing, you put good bowl down

:00:29.:00:34.

there may ten inches away and one is two inches away and it is just not

:00:35.:00:39.

enough. Especially when you need a four. I suspect Darren will just be

:00:40.:00:46.

reaching through. Any deep hole will be good. -- deep bowl.

:00:47.:01:02.

I think he is happy with this. The Cluxton awkward.

:01:03.:01:18.

He is asking for another one. -- this looks awkward. A little flicker

:01:19.:01:36.

of the lights in the arena. Colin, did that happen before you played?

:01:37.:01:45.

This is really good sportsmanship. What Darren is asking, if that

:01:46.:01:52.

little flicker of light happened during delivery. He is going to ask

:01:53.:02:01.

him to replay the bowl, that is the opposition doing that. APPLAUSE

:02:02.:02:03.

That is tremendous stuff. Normally those sorts of things are

:02:04.:02:18.

the responsibility of the official both the players can take over. That

:02:19.:02:24.

was excellent stuff. Colin was four or five feet away without one. --

:02:25.:02:34.

with that one. Just hope it does not cost him the match! Exactly. He is

:02:35.:02:44.

in the area. Wrong side. That is not going to make any difference.

:02:45.:02:53.

Even in that position, it is interesting when something like that

:02:54.:03:07.

happens under player comes in and wants to get it sorted. The game is

:03:08.:03:14.

more important. Darren has always been a very good sportsman. He plays

:03:15.:03:16.

the game well. He is happy enough to be around the

:03:17.:03:35.

area and beat the other red bowl. This is going to be hit and hope. I

:03:36.:03:43.

think so. As you say, sometimes players just hit the target and you

:03:44.:03:49.

never know, but I just do not see a four. I think: shaking his head,

:03:50.:03:51.

what is the point? A Nice to get onto his own bowl and

:03:52.:04:09.

spit into the two reds and hope the jack moves through and even then the

:04:10.:04:16.

front wing still wins. Of basically impossible. -- the front green still

:04:17.:04:20.

wins. Practice shot. Through the gap. In this sort of happen. No

:04:21.:04:34.

doubt they have been of the better pair.

:04:35.:05:01.

10-7 probably reflect the match. That three was the key end. That put

:05:02.:05:20.

them in a strong position for the first set.

:05:21.:05:45.

Just needs to dip in now. That is handy. Pressure here on Darren. It

:05:46.:06:44.

looks more of a forehand shot that Darren prefers his backhand in this

:06:45.:06:45.

direction. If he draws on the back and then

:06:46.:06:54.

misses the Jackie could get to the back bowl and make second shot.

:06:55.:07:06.

Stick to the hound you prefer. -- if he misses the jack he could get to

:07:07.:07:11.

the back bowl. Strong bias bowl, just needs the weight. Great try. I

:07:12.:07:19.

think he might have made it according to Stewart Anderson. One

:07:20.:07:23.

red. Just needed one more inch. Move the jack, Colin. Although he

:07:24.:07:49.

has taken it away there is still a shot on for Darren and he looks

:07:50.:07:55.

disappointed. Maybe just a little bit too far, bringing the back green

:07:56.:07:56.

one into play. Just a back can draw. He has put the pressure on down. --

:07:57.:08:21.

backhand draw. What an effort. Just did not get down in time. Really

:08:22.:08:28.

good effort. So close to just tucking the jack away. Chance to

:08:29.:08:37.

open 43. -- for a three. It needs to stop. Well. Chance of a

:08:38.:09:03.

spare. I think they will admit it is time for a change. Quite rightly,

:09:04.:09:24.

changing the length of the jack. 27 metres, nothing from 23 metres to 27

:09:25.:09:35.

metres. Definite change needed. I would always expect Stewart and

:09:36.:09:40.

Darren to play full lengths but quite rightly so, Colin, and Ronnie,

:09:41.:09:47.

they realise they need to change. That is a good start. That is

:09:48.:09:57.

exactly what you want. Probably 23 metre jack length. Just over the

:09:58.:10:03.

minimum. As you say, Stewart will correct

:10:04.:10:28.

with the next bit in the meantime Ronnie is there. Two great goals.

:10:29.:10:43.

Trying to get Stewart to hit this. I think that is what Darren is

:10:44.:10:48.

thinking about. Stewart is a good driver. He has skipped for the

:10:49.:10:54.

Scottish international team and he played all the shots. Just a case

:10:55.:11:01.

of, do you widen the target or do you go early? The harder shot. This

:11:02.:11:16.

is not going to be easy. Play the running bowl but try to stay on the

:11:17.:11:25.

green. I am not sure if that has rarely help. In a way that probably

:11:26.:11:33.

makes it harder. Kept the bowl on the ring in the back position. That

:11:34.:11:40.

will cover the T on the restart. Just one bowl target now for Darren,

:11:41.:11:46.

will probably try to draw a second bowl here. Gone down to the re-spot,

:11:47.:11:57.

happy enough to leave the two and let's Darren work away at it. Darren

:11:58.:12:02.

might be tempted to draw this to get a second bowl in. If this covers the

:12:03.:12:07.

race but there is no value in the jack going off the ring. I think it

:12:08.:12:16.

is just a draw, there is room on the backhand side to get a second.

:12:17.:12:20.

Getting shot would probably be difficult. He is trying to draw

:12:21.:12:27.

second. Good tactical battle this. Study. Very close to shot. Very good

:12:28.:12:33.

bowl. Still one Scarlets. -- Colin going for position. That is

:12:34.:13:19.

a good spot. Darren will not do anything other than just draw this

:13:20.:13:27.

because I cannot see this being any worse off but there is always the

:13:28.:13:32.

possibility of the jack locking in somewhere on the Red Bulls if he

:13:33.:13:38.

plays through it. If he attacks this I'm sure they would be more than one

:13:39.:13:47.

down so it is just a draw. Having a chat about it. There is no value in

:13:48.:13:53.

hitting this at all. Suggesting maybe he is going to run

:13:54.:14:18.

out this. If he gets the angle absolutely right he could get the

:14:19.:14:21.

two reds but you are down two millimetres to do that. That went

:14:22.:14:27.

the is playing the runner. Now. I don't believe it. He has got the

:14:28.:14:40.

shot. He definitely was not playing for mass side. -- for that side. It

:14:41.:14:49.

was a great strike. It was the bowl he wanted but how on earth did he

:14:50.:14:54.

get the edge of the jack. He has no idea. Put it down in the area and it

:14:55.:15:03.

just worked out. Colin acknowledges it, he says he did not expect it

:15:04.:15:17.

over there. However, good strike. When you do start to think to

:15:18.:15:23.

yourself, is it going to be my day? The first goal was just an inch away

:15:24.:15:28.

and then he sticks the jack which did not look possible. -- snicks.

:15:29.:15:39.

Back to the favoured 29.5 metres. Well played, Ronnie has certainly

:15:40.:16:14.

picked his game up at the start of this set.

:16:15.:16:31.

Certainly looks better weight. Rock-solid. More bowls staying

:16:32.:16:49.

upright this year than ever before. The question whether that should be,

:16:50.:16:57.

the carpet of its lower. That is usually what is involved. But none

:16:58.:17:04.

of the hand severally got the big swing and did we are used to. But

:17:05.:17:10.

the carpet is playing well. It is playing very well. Some of the

:17:11.:17:13.

bowling has been fantastic. Sometimes it happens when it is a

:17:14.:17:23.

little bit slower. Makes it a more level playing field. Click on the

:17:24.:17:29.

fingers suggesting he is a bit heavy. That is not bad.

:17:30.:18:22.

Just struggling to get back there. Once you go high they just want

:18:23.:18:30.

comeback which is why Darren prefers the backhand. That and they just

:18:31.:18:34.

won't come back. Basically he's giving him choice of

:18:35.:18:50.

shot. I think he might come and have a look. Basically he is saying you

:18:51.:19:00.

can afford to be reaching the head. He is saying if you get into that

:19:01.:19:05.

then the jack will probably go through at least two there which

:19:06.:19:16.

brings in the red bowl. Or he has the draw round the corner. It is

:19:17.:19:22.

down to how Colin feels. Just coming in on the high side. If he falls

:19:23.:19:28.

back he makes the two, if he touches the Jackie makes the two. The basic

:19:29.:19:35.

percentage is probably for the heavier bowl. The draw is maybe too

:19:36.:19:43.

accurate. He would have to hit the green bowl onto the jack and if he

:19:44.:19:47.

hit the inside of it this could go to the re-spot. Through the head,

:19:48.:19:55.

quite right. He is just on the edge for the front green bowl. It just

:19:56.:20:04.

looked at tiny the Thunder. -- it just looked a tiny bit under. You

:20:05.:20:15.

just want to keep this set nice and tight for the first few ends. In the

:20:16.:20:21.

last set there was any one end that was a problem, when they lost the

:20:22.:20:25.

three but other than that it was tight all the way. Both sets have

:20:26.:20:30.

started tight. Darian Stewart have basically got stronger. They will be

:20:31.:20:35.

looking for the same as the set progresses.

:20:36.:20:48.

Just not good enough, ridiculous. Must improve! This is a bit high. He

:20:49.:21:18.

has been playing some very good bowls, forehand. Stewart will be

:21:19.:21:28.

trying to beat his opening delivery. He picks the line perfectly every

:21:29.:21:31.

time. Trying to just fade past the jack if

:21:32.:22:45.

he can. On the high side. It is going to be in the count. That is

:22:46.:22:53.

good. This is not easy again for Colin. He is being asked a lot of

:22:54.:23:06.

questions. This is not easy. I wonder if he could have played on

:23:07.:23:11.

the forehand to try to bounce the jack out. He has played this pretty

:23:12.:23:15.

well. APPLAUSE Wonderful delivery. That was a bit

:23:16.:23:24.

special. Certainly was, Ronnie acknowledging that. Not quite sure

:23:25.:23:31.

who is in line but it is a great bowl stop -- who is lying, but it is

:23:32.:23:39.

a great bowl. Something not right about this one.

:23:40.:24:22.

If you're going to play it it has to be on the forehand. I get the

:24:23.:24:28.

impression the way he plays that it was most likely were lining. I don't

:24:29.:24:38.

think so, if Colin is lying here they will basically leave it alone

:24:39.:24:43.

and take the one. It is so difficult to add another. There is another

:24:44.:24:48.

shot available but goodness me it is risky. The way here's looking at it,

:24:49.:24:56.

the only other shot is coming in there but if he really wanted to

:24:57.:25:00.

take a risk to try to get the jack back into that position to be worth

:25:01.:25:06.

two or three, that is a massively risky shot. I think at this stage of

:25:07.:25:10.

the set I would just keep this tight. One either way. It is

:25:11.:25:16.

favouring reds so I do not think he will be too ambitious with this

:25:17.:25:27.

bowl. Certainly reaching. He has moved the red bowl and think it has

:25:28.:25:31.

probably moved it away. I think it might have cost them the shot. That

:25:32.:25:35.

was the danger of going near the head. I think that has moved the red

:25:36.:25:47.

bowl away a little bit. Taking the debris away. Yes I think he has

:25:48.:25:55.

given it away. That could have been costly. I am with you, I did not

:25:56.:26:07.

think it was really necessary. You can have changed the length, keep

:26:08.:26:14.

the momentum. The jack was more important than anything. I think it

:26:15.:26:25.

was. Just touched it, not by much, but small margins.

:26:26.:27:29.

Swing away and run, very good. The lives of millions if it is falling

:27:30.:27:46.

down. It has gone, that makes a big difference. It has also narrowed the

:27:47.:27:52.

target considerably. It makes it harder once again for Ronnie and

:27:53.:28:02.

Colin. Of just the few small little things have made a difference. In

:28:03.:28:12.

the last end Colin gave it away, very unlucky that bowl falls down.

:28:13.:28:19.

It is not much really, it has just been that rub of the green. Yes. The

:28:20.:28:27.

pressure is on Colin. It gets harder and harder as the game progresses.

:28:28.:28:34.

Darren on his favourite backhand in this direction. It looks close. Very

:28:35.:28:43.

close. Just wants to finish in front. That is good. I think Darren

:28:44.:28:51.

and Stewart are actually manufacturing almost their own luck

:28:52.:28:54.

in this game by playing really, really good bowls. You can see

:28:55.:29:01.

Darren's bowl coming in, finishing six inches short. Once again forcing

:29:02.:29:09.

Colin to play the perfect bowl here. Has been slightly heavy on this

:29:10.:29:16.

side. And another back bowl. I think Darren will go round behind this

:29:17.:29:26.

just in case. Go deep. You are lying very, very well at the moment in the

:29:27.:29:35.

head, two good shots. Certainly no need to make it any bigger. I would

:29:36.:29:41.

agree, David, this will be a yard through the head. This is tough for

:29:42.:29:55.

Colin. Jack high so a bit of an error. He realises that could be an

:29:56.:30:05.

error. Now, Colin, how easy is this to trail the jack four or five feet?

:30:06.:30:13.

That is a really tough shots, to get there and what he into this position

:30:14.:30:21.

and that I thought he was putting his balls

:30:22.:30:35.

even if it if run he misses with then you

:30:36.:32:12.

would expect Stewart It is an easy game if he keeps doing

:32:13.:32:39.

this. If Darren manages to trail the jack,

:32:40.:33:04.

close all in here again, the pressure really building up on

:33:05.:33:05.

Colin. This one dipping back. I do not

:33:06.:33:35.

think he will even attempt to draw this. Go right through that, mate.

:33:36.:33:44.

He is close. He has not got anything on the rink. What was I saying about

:33:45.:33:57.

things going wrong? He was not far-away with the strike. Just go

:33:58.:34:07.

slightly under. Oh dear. The latter, Colin, it was bad enough just to

:34:08.:34:12.

miss the target but to take your own two out leaves you know options

:34:13.:34:13.

whatsoever. Even you would David. It is certainly for, how close it

:34:14.:34:31.

get? Should be encouraging this. He wants this one right up. The thing

:34:32.:34:39.

is you can't destroy the end so he has to to. Simple as that. Any drive

:34:40.:34:47.

that he would have played would have gone off the rink. This would be a

:34:48.:34:56.

miracle recovery. Colonise this would be a good one. --: nose.

:34:57.:35:05.

I always think there is key moments in every game in the second set,

:35:06.:35:40.

that key moments was not touching the red ball enough. And things

:35:41.:35:47.

really have gone wrong since then. They really have and all of a sudden

:35:48.:35:51.

Stewart has gone tide began and made it hard and at the moment 8-2, a

:35:52.:35:58.

great position to be in and they have the draw as well so six or

:35:59.:36:01.

seven up. He wants to clear it. Just dropped

:36:02.:36:59.

off. Leaves Ronnie an opportunity to rest the ball and return the jack.

:37:00.:37:06.

Has a chance here. A reasonable white target, you expect him to get

:37:07.:37:17.

close. Pics a jack up perfect, well played. Colin realise that with a

:37:18.:37:26.

big smile, it was a good ball but he knows it was unlucky. Don't fall

:37:27.:37:34.

over, things are tough enough. Darren Burnett is such a good

:37:35.:37:41.

striker. I would expect him to hit it. It looks in fighting on the back

:37:42.:37:48.

panel. There is only one problem. Because he is six up. You could try

:37:49.:37:58.

to give two shots away that they are hard to beat on the draw and his

:37:59.:38:03.

natural game would be to hit this on the back so I can sit soft this. --

:38:04.:38:08.

of this. I think he has them both. And he's

:38:09.:38:28.

right it as well. Two feet, that will not be easy to beat. That is

:38:29.:38:33.

what Colin was smiling about when Ronnie pulled the jack over, it's

:38:34.:38:39.

just framed the jack. He hit a high percentage does Darren with the

:38:40.:38:48.

running boards, doesn't miss many. Many people have been on the wrong

:38:49.:38:56.

side of that with Darren. Not easy for Karin trying to draw the short

:38:57.:39:07.

ball. --:. Super-short that is. Under a lot of pressure again.

:39:08.:39:15.

Ronnie played to brilliant balls and suddenly one bowl later the pressure

:39:16.:39:23.

was back on. Just a draw here for Darren, one down is not a disaster.

:39:24.:39:31.

Interesting hand signals there, I wonder is he thinking about a

:39:32.:39:39.

running ball after the drive. It'll be hard to make a double. The second

:39:40.:39:43.

bowl was OK here. The line is good enough. Should come

:39:44.:40:02.

out in again, here it comes. Yes it could be. It is on the wider side,

:40:03.:40:10.

the red is straight to the jack and there is that drop-down into the

:40:11.:40:16.

ditch. That is a very good second. He was happy with a good second, not

:40:17.:40:22.

easy for: to add another. You almost feel he has to score to hear --

:40:23.:40:31.

Colin. There are not making any mistakes. They have been solid,

:40:32.:40:43.

really good. Try to miss the green ball the same sort of weight. On the

:40:44.:40:49.

inside would be good. APPLAUSE

:40:50.:40:54.

Just lacking a little bit although Ronnie was calling it. One shot

:40:55.:41:12.

Darren and Walker -- Duncan. The last time we had a real shot end,

:41:13.:41:16.

Ronnie had to on top of the Jackson he will be hoping for the same

:41:17.:41:18.

again. -- Jack so he will. Stewart Anderson waving at the bowl

:41:19.:42:20.

to get it back, he has been so good picking out the line and length with

:42:21.:42:28.

his forehand, the line does change whenever you are short on the jack.

:42:29.:42:33.

In theory it doesn't. The jack should be the same line. Slow down,

:42:34.:42:50.

take your time. Get another close ball.

:42:51.:42:58.

Two loose ones from Stuart. -- Stewart. I think it would add a good

:42:59.:43:13.

shot in here, at some pressure on Darren.

:43:14.:43:33.

Just needs to hurry a little bit to make up for the extra one. There it

:43:34.:43:36.

is. Well that short jack has certainly

:43:37.:44:09.

made a difference. It certainly has, Colin just has to add another one

:44:10.:44:18.

here I feel. I would be looking to add another here, at the pressure on

:44:19.:44:20.

to Darren. -- at. Not a big target really. Yes he is

:44:21.:44:37.

looking to score and thinking if he goes big and covers it Darren will

:44:38.:44:43.

think to himself, even if I hit it I will be one down. I would be trying

:44:44.:44:52.

to put pressure on the opposition. If Darren is four down there is more

:44:53.:44:57.

pressure, I would go to try and live for. -- lie four.. This is number

:44:58.:45:16.

four. Well done. Gently gently, don't bring it out. That is very

:45:17.:45:29.

very good. Just settled in in time, that is fine, the front bowl still

:45:30.:45:33.

covers it and I don't think there are any options to go with a single

:45:34.:45:42.

bold targets. We will have to see it here.

:45:43.:45:46.

At best he might get third. If he does get in and there is a chance to

:45:47.:45:55.

take a couple away, there is always the chance to get the jack out that

:45:56.:46:01.

side. It doesn't matter which way he wants to play it to be truthful with

:46:02.:46:06.

you but he can still draw it in their hope to get the second shot.

:46:07.:46:11.

The forehand is still available. It won't make any difference except now

:46:12.:46:16.

the jack is going all the way back into this position. That brings the

:46:17.:46:24.

other two bowls into play. You start looking at a green ball here, yes

:46:25.:46:27.

that is what they are looking at. The key bowls. They are the two

:46:28.:46:33.

green ones but he has to make the contact. You almost feel if he hits

:46:34.:46:42.

this he has won this. Depends if the ball goes with it of course because

:46:43.:46:43.

it is a touch. Drop. That was a perfect results. If

:46:44.:47:04.

he had got a solid the bowl would have gone with the jack but he got

:47:05.:47:10.

the edge and the red bowl did not go anywhere. I thought he was on the

:47:11.:47:16.

high side and would rob the green. Catches the red perfect. That is a

:47:17.:47:28.

matchwinner. Absolutely. That is the sort of bold you go down with the

:47:29.:47:33.

microphone and say you'll hit a fraction. Eight times out of ten the

:47:34.:47:41.

front bowl would have gone through. Just got that absolutely perfect, he

:47:42.:47:46.

has been grated a Darren Burnett. -- great today. He certainly will be

:47:47.:47:54.

hard to beat in the other competitions if he keeps the

:47:55.:47:55.

standard going. One shot here and it is all over.

:47:56.:48:41.

That is a pretty good front one. Even harder now for Colin and

:48:42.:48:54.

Ronnie. Swing for home. That's OK. The cover bowl is going in. The two

:48:55.:49:06.

guys know that even happy enough to lose this. Good effort, just

:49:07.:49:18.

dropping off although it sets up a plan to move the green ball. The

:49:19.:49:26.

last time was cruel in some ways, line four shots and then lose a

:49:27.:49:30.

double, going for a potential 8-7 to then losing the match. That is

:49:31.:49:37.

what's happened, no doubt that is a matchwinner. His confidence is so

:49:38.:49:43.

high here. I don't know if he wants to go anywhere near it, he would

:49:44.:49:49.

like to lock it in probably. He needs another one in here.

:49:50.:50:02.

Good bowl. The forehand... An important running ball for Colin.

:50:03.:50:20.

Once again nothing but perfection from Colin. He gets in, will take

:50:21.:50:28.

one away. Their jack has moved and that will not help. They will almost

:50:29.:50:36.

be certainly shaking hands. He is shaking his head, he has realised

:50:37.:50:42.

the pressure has built and built. Very little has gone right and

:50:43.:50:46.

everything has gone for the guys. Having said that they make their own

:50:47.:50:49.

luck in many ways and every single bowl down there has been close to

:50:50.:50:54.

the target. I agree. They have played a perfect pairs game. Colin

:50:55.:51:01.

has bowled well and Darren has backed it up.

:51:02.:51:12.

That is a championship lie. He has to drive the jack. Go for the jack

:51:13.:51:39.

Moates. Quite right. Not easy once again.

:51:40.:51:42.

He is in the area. Now where is that going. He could actually get a shot

:51:43.:51:56.

out of this. He's actually got two out of that. Unbelievable. Time he

:51:57.:52:07.

got a little break and he got at that time. Bang on target. We don't

:52:08.:52:18.

see that happen too often. That was a great strike. A good bit of

:52:19.:52:27.

fortune to follow. Here is a drive. Bang on the target.

:52:28.:53:18.

Easy now. Easy now. Good enough. Realistically three shots needed.

:53:19.:53:38.

That is the only way they can extend it, they would love to do that. Five

:53:39.:53:53.

down as you say, they need a two. A three to have any sort of realistic

:53:54.:53:54.

chance in this match. Having scored a three in this match

:53:55.:54:10.

so far, he lost a couple. A loose end from Stuart. -- Stewart. I

:54:11.:54:17.

expect: to draw the winner here. Well played Colin. The boys watching

:54:18.:54:46.

back at the sawmill, I'm sure they are very busy, I'm sure there will

:54:47.:54:53.

be a television on in the background. He will be looking to

:54:54.:54:58.

get back for a rest. It has been hard work this afternoon it really

:54:59.:55:10.

has. That is a good ball it's really is. If he doesn't get back to the

:55:11.:55:23.

jack then it is all over, they will be shaking hands. This looks a

:55:24.:55:32.

little bit to me. That looks to be over.

:55:33.:55:37.

APPLAUSE It looks like a very tight game all

:55:38.:55:43.

the way until the three shot in the first seven, that was the break the

:55:44.:55:48.

boys needed, Stuart Anderson and Darren Burnett, they have one the

:55:49.:55:52.

first set but they were looking very strong as they took it 10-6. Without

:55:53.:55:58.

a doubt the best pair on the day. Both players gave excellent

:55:59.:56:04.

displays. A great display of pairs play. They created luck by playing

:56:05.:56:12.

really good bowls. This is how it happened. You can see the two boys

:56:13.:56:16.

coming out and having a laugh with the guys as well. You can see Colin

:56:17.:56:26.

Walker just dropping inside again. He was under pressure there, last

:56:27.:56:35.

bowl to say. Darren Burnett a little turn on the jack and that made the

:56:36.:56:39.

three he needed. The massive difference in the first set. Colin

:56:40.:56:43.

Walker was desperately unlucky in this. That was the fourth and second

:56:44.:56:51.

set when he gave the shot away. Two bowls out, absolutely nothing to

:56:52.:56:58.

play and barren burn-out, four against and a little edge on them

:56:59.:57:03.

all. Took a double and more less secured the win. Great reform and

:57:04.:57:12.

is, they are the world pairs indoor champions and deservedly so. The

:57:13.:57:27.

Chat show the favourites. The total shot scored, 20-13, the average

:57:28.:57:34.

length is where Darren Burnett and Stewart Anderson won the match. They

:57:35.:57:37.

fully deserved to be the pairs champion for 2016. And here I am

:57:38.:57:48.

with the pairs championship. He'd been to this final before, how good

:57:49.:57:52.

is it to get over the line? Darren was superb and again, I must give a

:57:53.:57:57.

big thank you to: because I don't think the score reflected the game.

:57:58.:58:02.

I thoroughly enjoyed the match and I'm glad we won the pairs together.

:58:03.:58:08.

The first set in particular as Stewart said, your opponents were

:58:09.:58:12.

tough to overcome, when you got on top of them did you feel that you

:58:13.:58:18.

are on your way to the title? Not at all, they are fantastic players and

:58:19.:58:23.

we had to dig deep and it was a really tight match Stewart says.

:58:24.:58:27.

Scoreline did not reflect the game. One of the Times could have made it

:58:28.:58:31.

a different game. Some key moments but one in particular, 8-10 towards

:58:32.:58:35.

the end and you produce an outstanding drive. We didn't have a

:58:36.:58:40.

lot song to be honest so I had to hit the target. I expected to still

:58:41.:58:50.

lose. Those moments key. Stewart you have won the individual title here

:58:51.:58:54.

as has Darren, is it impossible to compare the two? Not really. To lift

:58:55.:59:01.

any world title is a great achievement. The run of success, the

:59:02.:59:09.

Commonwealth Games, the championship, what does this mean

:59:10.:59:13.

the? Is means a lot, as Stewart says it is all was good to get any title.

:59:14.:59:21.

It is a dream come true. Commiserations to Colin and runny

:59:22.:59:25.

but ladies and gentlemen your champions in the pairs 2016

:59:26.:59:30.

championship Darren Anderson and is due up the debt. -- Stuart Burnett.

:59:31.:59:44.

Now it is time for the presentations. Europe pre-season but

:59:45.:59:49.

the presentation party. The Chief Executive Officer and tournament

:59:50.:59:55.

director, Mr Richard Madison along with the director for strategic

:59:56.:59:56.

projects, Mr Peter Beverley. And 1st to receive the runners-up

:59:57.:00:13.

cheque, they played magnificently throughout the tournament. Your

:00:14.:00:18.

appreciation pleas for Ronnie Duncan and Colin Walker!

:00:19.:00:23.

APPLAUSE CHEERING

:00:24.:00:43.

But now to the winners and to receive a glass goblet each, a

:00:44.:00:52.

cheque and the title for the 2016 world indoor pairs champions...

:00:53.:00:55.

Darren Burnett and Stuart Anderson! APPLAUSE

:00:56.:01:21.

Howl about that, ladies and gentlemen? 1 more time, the 2016

:01:22.:01:27.

world indoor pairs champions, Darren Burnett and Stuart Anderson.

:01:28.:01:30.

APPLAUSE Fantastic performance from both of

:01:31.:01:56.

you. Both players still involved in the singles competition and that is

:01:57.:02:00.

what we will focus on now on BBC Two this afternoon. Let's look at how

:02:01.:02:06.

the draw is shaping up so far. Alex Marshall will play Gary Kelly, that

:02:07.:02:11.

is up next. Mark Dawes will take on Jimmy Smith. Stewart Anderson

:02:12.:02:15.

already through as is the other former champion Mervyn King. Andy

:02:16.:02:20.

Thomson knocked out, Jamie Chesney defeating Jason Greenslade. The

:02:21.:02:27.

biggest shock perhaps of the tournament so far... The defeat of

:02:28.:02:34.

four time champion Paul Foster. Simon Skelton, Jonathan Ross, David

:02:35.:02:41.

Gourlay, Darren Burnett and Greg Harlow amongst those through to the

:02:42.:02:47.

last 16. Mickey Brett still to play. We will focus on the match between

:02:48.:02:51.

Alex Marshall and Gary Kelly. 1st of all, let's talk about Alex Marshall,

:02:52.:02:56.

had the most decorated player in the game. Now 48 years old, seeded

:02:57.:03:01.

number 1 in this tournament and he has won the title 6 times, going for

:03:02.:03:06.

an amazing 7th title. Quite simply the man to beat. To be fair to him,

:03:07.:03:13.

he is happy to be back on familiar territory. Alex, here we are in

:03:14.:03:21.

January once again. It must be a place that you look forward to

:03:22.:03:26.

coming to? Yes, it's a place I love to play bowls. Purely because I have

:03:27.:03:32.

been very successful. The majority of my titles have been 1 here, I

:03:33.:03:37.

like the surroundings, the carpet. Yes, I use this as my 2nd home. You

:03:38.:03:43.

won your 1st title, the world title in 1999, you 1st started coming

:03:44.:03:50.

here... 2016, today, what is the difference between arriving here now

:03:51.:03:54.

and then? To be honest, I think it's the same. I do the same homework, I

:03:55.:04:00.

do the same preparation, everything is always the same. It is something

:04:01.:04:05.

I don't want to change because I had been so successful. I have my own

:04:06.:04:09.

little rituals that I do, nobody knows. As soon as I walk in, I do

:04:10.:04:14.

the same things all the time may yes, just happy to be back. When you

:04:15.:04:19.

won your 1st world title did you ever have any ambition to win a

:04:20.:04:24.

certain number? Yes, I did. Obviously, I used to say David

:04:25.:04:30.

Bryant and all of these guys on the television and I said I would love

:04:31.:04:34.

to perform in that event. It is hard to qualify, you have to go through

:04:35.:04:38.

the qualifiers and they did, managed to win them and I got the

:04:39.:04:43.

opportunity to come here and win the World Championships in 1999. I had 2

:04:44.:04:47.

chances before that in Preston, I was a bit unlucky. But yes,

:04:48.:04:55.

obviously, I would love to win it once, but would be a dream country

:04:56.:05:00.

but winning it 6 times... You could never, ever dream of something like

:05:01.:05:04.

that, especially with the players involved, so many class players. To

:05:05.:05:10.

win it 6 times is just amazing. When you play against all of these class

:05:11.:05:13.

players, every single game you play is hard but I am always focused, I

:05:14.:05:20.

don't get nervous. Before the game, I am nervous, everyone is but when I

:05:21.:05:24.

get on the green, I settled down and I don't put pressure on myself. I am

:05:25.:05:28.

like everyone else, I want to win and I am going to take it a game at

:05:29.:05:34.

a time. We talk about 7 titles... It is something I would love to do. The

:05:35.:05:41.

more you get, the better it is. But, yes, it would be a dream come true

:05:42.:05:48.

to win it for the 7th time. And the man who is tasked with trying to

:05:49.:05:52.

defeat Alex Marshall in this 1st round is Gary Kelly. Let's find out

:05:53.:05:57.

more about the 26 -year-old from county Antrim in Northern Ireland.

:05:58.:06:01.

He has played in this event a couple of times before but the last of his

:06:02.:06:05.

5 appearances was 5 years ago, got to the 2nd round in 2008 and is also

:06:06.:06:10.

the winner of a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi back in

:06:11.:06:15.

2010. Standing in his way today is the little matter of Alex Marshall!

:06:16.:06:26.

It is always going to be a difficult challenge for me. Alex Marshall is 1

:06:27.:06:32.

of the most respected and successful players in the game. But at the end

:06:33.:06:37.

of the day as the qualifier UART guaranteed to play a seed, there

:06:38.:06:41.

will never be an easy job but unfortunately I have true Alex

:06:42.:06:45.

Marshall, the 6 times champion, defending champion and I am the King

:06:46.:06:49.

for 2. The 1st 2 balls are important, but Alex under pressure,

:06:50.:06:53.

force him into shots, that is the key. -- looking forward to it. I

:06:54.:07:01.

unfortunately gain the experience, hopefully I can use that to my

:07:02.:07:07.

advantage. As you say, my 4th time here, again, more experience, I have

:07:08.:07:13.

played in more major offence so hopefully, I can produce a good

:07:14.:07:20.

performance. So, Alex Marshall at about to set off on his quest to win

:07:21.:07:26.

an amazing 7th title. We can rejoin the commentary team, Greg Harlow

:07:27.:07:33.

joins David Cork. COMMENTATOR: Gary Kelly arrived last

:07:34.:07:37.

night from the arrows Championships. A man in great form, a big ask.

:07:38.:07:43.

Absolutely. I played him a couple of times, great player, probably Alex

:07:44.:07:48.

Marshall is the 1 you want to avoid in the 1st round. Absolutely, no

:07:49.:07:55.

doubt. Gary Kelly, really, to 3 days beforehand, still a hard game for

:07:56.:07:59.

him and yet, last night, has he got the hours put in? I think you would

:08:00.:08:04.

say the odds are stacked against him but he is an experienced player and

:08:05.:08:08.

he could pull out a shock, you never know. A big driver and I think you

:08:09.:08:13.

will get plenty of practice. He is, because I think Alex is in top form.

:08:14.:08:17.

It will be interesting to see how things go, 1 of those matters, you

:08:18.:08:22.

say to yourself, what will happen? Well Alex Marshall put the Bulls in

:08:23.:08:28.

end after end, Gary Kelly trying to get out of trouble, but the thing is

:08:29.:08:36.

the re- spot. The thing is, if you are a big driver, you need to hit

:08:37.:08:40.

everyone because as soon as you miss, the opposition covers the

:08:41.:08:44.

spot. If he gets into his driving game, he cannot afford to miss.

:08:45.:08:49.

Already in great form. Chances for number 7? I think that there's a

:08:50.:08:54.

long way off, he has got to win 5 games but he would be 1 of the

:08:55.:08:59.

favourites. You look at someone like Gary Kelly who hasn't been here for

:09:00.:09:04.

5 or 6 years, it will be tough but we have had some surprises. 1 or 2

:09:05.:09:08.

big shocks already in the tournament. In that respect,

:09:09.:09:13.

probably the pressure will be off Gary and he might even play as if

:09:14.:09:17.

this is his final and sometimes, it can work in the favour of the

:09:18.:09:21.

underdog. It will be an interesting match, looking forward to it. From

:09:22.:09:28.

our point of view, sitting up here, and from your point of view, it is

:09:29.:09:33.

going to be scary having home, and playing against the top guys. It is

:09:34.:09:40.

almost better playing the likes of Paul Foster? When you are playing

:09:41.:09:43.

Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, you know exactly what to expect. You play the

:09:44.:09:48.

qualifiers, they can play some very different shots and on the day, they

:09:49.:09:52.

are good enough to pull them off under can cause upsets, as we have

:09:53.:09:56.

seen. This rink is slightly different because it's a little bit

:09:57.:10:00.

and it's just a little bit flatter and I think that is really helping

:10:01.:10:03.

some of the qualifiers coming through. I think it is, a little bit

:10:04.:10:08.

and the memory banks for all of the seeded players is how the rink has

:10:09.:10:12.

played over the years and now it play slightly different and you have

:10:13.:10:18.

to concentrate 100% because if you give it the line you used to, it can

:10:19.:10:23.

make it 4. Thank you. Now we join Ritchie in the arena.

:10:24.:10:29.

The player is bidding for a spot in the last 16, Alex Marshall taking on

:10:30.:10:33.

Gary Kelly, that is up next. Let's say hello to Richard. Thank you, I

:10:34.:10:39.

1st player has 16 national titles to his credit, he is no slouch on the

:10:40.:10:44.

green. A former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, ladies and

:10:45.:10:44.

gentlemen, Gary Kelly! And now to another finalist in the

:10:45.:11:12.

international circuit, the defending world indoor singles champion, Alex

:11:13.:11:16.

Marshall, MBE. Once more, let's head back to the

:11:17.:11:41.

commentary team, Greg Harlow joins David Corkill. Alex Marshall coming

:11:42.:11:52.

out to Can You Feel The Force. He says this is his favourite green. He

:11:53.:11:54.

is looking very comfortable. This will be the last time for

:11:55.:12:16.

Sandra McLeish to be here, she retires after this season. She is 1

:12:17.:12:25.

of the balls to officials team. She will be greatly missed. I don't know

:12:26.:12:30.

how many years she has done but it seems like she has been here as long

:12:31.:12:33.

as most of the rest of us and what a fantastic job she has done over the

:12:34.:12:40.

years. Sandra is a much trusted by the players and I think when you

:12:41.:12:44.

have the trust and respect of the players you know you are doing the

:12:45.:12:50.

job extremely well. In terms of her bowling career, an international

:12:51.:12:52.

player, in her own right, very accomplished.

:12:53.:12:57.

Gary Kelly... Prolific winner of the under 25 titles but I know Gary very

:12:58.:13:06.

well. My skipping the international team. You must be over 25? Only

:13:07.:13:18.

just, 26. I could not believe it. I was looking at him and I thought...

:13:19.:13:21.

26? It is ridiculous! Not much more you can say about Alex

:13:22.:13:34.

Marshall, he has done it all. His sights are firmly fixed on the

:13:35.:13:48.

singles now. APPLAUSE

:13:49.:13:56.

The mixed pairs, of course... But just that tempting 7th world title.

:13:57.:14:05.

As you say, Greg, a long way to go. A lot of things can happen and a lot

:14:06.:14:08.

of good players are out there like yourself and others who can win the

:14:09.:14:14.

singles. I think all the players will say the same, it is literally 1

:14:15.:14:18.

game at a time, I know that sounds boring and like a cliche but that is

:14:19.:14:22.

what the players do, 1 game at a time and they progress through the

:14:23.:14:27.

tournament. That is the case, that is why there are an awful lot of

:14:28.:14:30.

cancelled flights and various other things with players. They only look

:14:31.:14:35.

at the next game. Can Alex hold his line? He is just a bit under.

:14:36.:14:48.

Alex has moved from the traditional that he worked for, the company, the

:14:49.:14:57.

distribution and he has moved to Errol balls, working for them, using

:14:58.:15:06.

their bowls. He certainly puts in the hours, the practice, with the

:15:07.:15:10.

new bowls and he knows exactly what they can do. Disappointed with the

:15:11.:15:18.

last 1. Yes, not the best of opening ends from Gary and I would be very

:15:19.:15:24.

surprised if Alex does not rob a 2nd in here. A good start to the game

:15:25.:15:25.

for him. Plenty of room. Yes, I was just wondering when we

:15:26.:15:45.

were doing the introduction, if Barry was on the rink, we did not

:15:46.:15:51.

know if he had even arrived. But he arrived last night! A midnight

:15:52.:16:02.

feast. -- is Gary. And an hour's practice. It is tough to come here

:16:03.:16:06.

and expect to do a little bit of practice and take on Alex Marshall.

:16:07.:16:11.

Yes, I think most of the players like to get here 2 or 3 days early

:16:12.:16:18.

and put in a fuse sessions on the rink. Unfortunately, Gary did not

:16:19.:16:23.

arrive until last night. Literally, he has to learn as he plays. He was

:16:24.:16:30.

committed to playing in the Irish finals and the only finished

:16:31.:16:31.

yesterday. I think he was on the last flight to

:16:32.:16:38.

Stansted! Alex starting off, this direction,

:16:39.:17:04.

the backhand, the hand that most people have been playing.

:17:05.:17:04.

APPLAUSE Very talented player, Gary Kelly, he

:17:05.:17:28.

really is. He can draw and he can drive, play all the shots. He builds

:17:29.:17:33.

up his experience. To know exactly when to play them. And there are

:17:34.:17:39.

very few people at his age with the experience that he has. Alex knows

:17:40.:17:44.

that potentially it could be a tough game if he is not in top form. Alex

:17:45.:17:52.

was not happy with that. He knew he was not there. But that is good. It

:17:53.:17:58.

is. You are not ever happy with playing a bad bowl. The worrying

:17:59.:18:05.

sign is when you think it is right and robs short, then you are in

:18:06.:18:14.

trouble. -- and drops short. Trying again. Just not there. Needed

:18:15.:18:18.

another foot. A good opportunity for Gary to slide

:18:19.:18:53.

another 1 in. Put a little bit of early pressure on Alex.

:18:54.:19:07.

A bit of work to do to get this 1 back. Here it comes. Good, steady,

:19:08.:19:22.

swinging bowl, very popular in the portable rink.

:19:23.:19:31.

I think practically all the players use this, Jason has experimented

:19:32.:19:43.

with others but even Jason uses the tiger. Alex is very close, needs a

:19:44.:19:49.

drop to win the shot. Not quite, I think. It looked better than that.

:19:50.:20:07.

Definitely a narrow line from Gary. Waving it in. I think it is more the

:20:08.:20:15.

weight than anything else. 1 shot, Gary Kelly!

:20:16.:20:29.

APPLAUSE Definitely on a narrower line than

:20:30.:20:31.

his other bowls. Some of the crowd just filtering in

:20:32.:20:42.

after the exciting final and the pairs.

:20:43.:20:49.

They certainly don't want to miss this match, Alex Marshall always

:20:50.:20:55.

brings in a crowd, playing against a young qualifier, adds a little bit

:20:56.:21:02.

of spice to it. Jack length, 28 1/2 metres. Gary Kelly was playing in

:21:03.:21:11.

Cyprus, as was Alex. He came back with a couple of medals from there.

:21:12.:21:18.

As did Alex, indeed, came back with a couple of silver medals. But he

:21:19.:21:27.

really cannot afford to do that! He knew out of the hand that it was not

:21:28.:21:29.

right. APPLAUSE

:21:30.:21:43.

Perfect. A good correction. Had to start

:21:44.:22:10.

thinking about the other side. I think the only option for Gary is

:22:11.:22:54.

the weight, both look locked on the draw. A very fast driver...

:22:55.:23:05.

Sticking to the draw. I think I am with you, Greg, played to the re-

:23:06.:23:15.

spot, hit that 1. I cannot see a lot of value in the shot he has just

:23:16.:23:20.

laid, to be honest. If he had played out on the other side, I would have

:23:21.:23:24.

understood it. It will be difficult now. Just 1 down at the moment.

:23:25.:23:40.

That is to now. That might change things. I think he will hit this

:23:41.:23:51.

now. Yes, probably looking to get into the split to get the best

:23:52.:23:58.

result. Depends how much... It is his own bowl that is the problem,

:23:59.:24:02.

will he get his own and flickered off? Very controlled weight, then he

:24:03.:24:08.

goes out there, it will struggle but it is coming back. I think that has

:24:09.:24:14.

gone the wrong side. Yes, he wanted it to go the other side. It would

:24:15.:24:20.

have been good. As it is, he will be 1 down and I am sure Alex will draw

:24:21.:24:22.

another. That is a good shot. Under pressure

:24:23.:24:40.

to play it with that sort of weight, not an easy shot. Drive quicker.

:24:41.:24:54.

The set score is bowl-macro-1 after 3 ends. -- four.

:24:55.:25:32.

Jack length, 29 1/2 metres. Both players opting for the long length,

:25:33.:25:44.

virtually full-length jacks. Well, that starts to go wrong in any

:25:45.:26:00.

way for Alex, he will move back. APPLAUSE

:26:01.:26:04.

When you are playing as well as this, you don't need to.

:26:05.:26:26.

He is looking down on a similar sort of line again, similar weight? That

:26:27.:26:54.

is good. APPLAUSE

:26:55.:27:18.

Slide over correction. Not much. -- a slight. Just the wrong side of the

:27:19.:27:32.

bowl. Alex will not eat going into this match with a game plan but he

:27:33.:27:36.

will be hoping to restrict Gary 2 singles and pick him up on multiples

:27:37.:27:41.

because he has had so much extra time on the rink. He should have the

:27:42.:27:43.

consistency to do just that. Did not look too sure about this 1.

:27:44.:28:06.

It looks good enough but I am starting to wonder if he has pushed

:28:07.:28:10.

it, dropping short. Badly dropping short.

:28:11.:28:17.

Alex Ross another 1. Gary is going to be in a heap of problems with

:28:18.:28:26.

this last bowl. This is what I feared for him. If he had the odd

:28:27.:28:32.

loose end he will lose heavily on the shot count. It is as much to do

:28:33.:28:42.

with not having the opportunity to actually get here and practice.

:28:43.:28:47.

Whenever they scheduled the Irish championships in the middle of the

:28:48.:28:50.

World Championships, it does not really help!

:28:51.:28:56.

I think Gary has decided not to visit the head at all. He has not

:28:57.:29:06.

visited it once this match. He is struggling. Yes, short, a very loose

:29:07.:29:18.

3. 3 shots, Alex Marshall! APPLAUSE

:29:19.:29:30.

Set score, 7- 1 after four ends. Gary has a big drive shot and if he

:29:31.:29:34.

keeps dropping short he will not be able to use that so he needs to make

:29:35.:29:38.

sure he is at least up to the jack length. To give himself the

:29:39.:29:45.

opportunity to drive at Alex's bowls and shake the game up a little bit.

:29:46.:29:54.

The jack, just hanging on. Jack length, 29 1/2 metres. That is what

:29:55.:30:01.

you call a maximum. Even the best in the world, when it comes to the jack

:30:02.:30:05.

rolling, can get it wrong. Scooting over the top of the green, the guys

:30:06.:30:10.

are saying, for some reason. Seems to be flying over the top a little

:30:11.:30:16.

bit. I think because the pace of the green is quite slow, the jack seems

:30:17.:30:20.

to go at its normal rate, you expected to be slow but it isn't. It

:30:21.:30:23.

seems to glide on a fraction. Right, Gary, need a better opening

:30:24.:30:32.

bowl. Looking for a little touch on the

:30:33.:30:56.

jack. Hiding away. Very good. Close, got a chance with it. Great

:30:57.:31:35.

bowl. Well done. APPLAUSE

:31:36.:31:46.

2.5 inches. Gary Kelly is a confidence player, when he gets in

:31:47.:31:52.

the groove, he is difficult to put down. It is just whether he is going

:31:53.:31:58.

to have the time to do that against somebody of Alex Marshall's stature.

:31:59.:32:18.

Needs another one in now. If not, I think Alex will be looking for the

:32:19.:32:27.

takeout. Is it going to stop? He is certainly trying with this. Just

:32:28.:32:34.

move sit around a little bit. There is a shot on their fat Alex if he

:32:35.:32:39.

wants to play at, bowl on to bowl, it will take the green one out clean

:32:40.:32:45.

as a whistle. I can't see the danger in it, he has three balls around,

:32:46.:32:50.

even if he still takes seconds. It looks to me like he is just

:32:51.:33:03.

trying to draw it. Clear the front one, that is the

:33:04.:33:20.

first issue. He was probably two feet short of the target he was

:33:21.:33:25.

after, that was all. If the score was 2-2 he would have played the

:33:26.:33:31.

shot 7-1 up. Thinking, if I only dropped one I am still in a

:33:32.:33:35.

commanding position in this set. The set is still looking good for him.

:33:36.:33:41.

One shot, Gary Kelly. I expect Gary to shorten the jack length.

:33:42.:34:17.

This is Gary's favourite place to play, it is an excellent place,

:34:18.:34:36.

fast. We have pretty much all played their many times, a wonderful

:34:37.:34:43.

drawing green. That is what Gary likes, the fast greens. Certainly he

:34:44.:34:47.

will be in the frame for the world championships in Christchurch later

:34:48.:34:48.

this year. That is a struggle on the over

:34:49.:35:23.

correction. If you are going to have any chance

:35:24.:35:34.

against Alex Marshall, you need to get those first two balls in. --

:35:35.:35:40.

bowls. Good correction here from Alex. On

:35:41.:35:46.

top. Brilliant. Gary in full concentration, he

:35:47.:36:07.

really needs a good bowl here. The lie is not bad.

:36:08.:36:15.

Struggling for weak. That is the problem now, he is going to be in

:36:16.:36:19.

trouble on the next one -- weight. Well, a vital bowl here. Looks the

:36:20.:36:35.

best of his four. Is it going to be good enough, is it

:36:36.:37:05.

going to run? Just going to give up, I think. A good try.

:37:06.:37:17.

A couple of options here for Alex. He could obviously just draw another

:37:18.:37:24.

shot, or play up to give it a notch, a couple of opportunities, just

:37:25.:37:29.

nudge the green out, I think he will probably just draw. He has opted for

:37:30.:37:34.

the four had, he isn't messing about with a backhand in case it drops in

:37:35.:37:38.

-- forehand. He is just looking to rattle off the

:37:39.:37:47.

ends and school singles, he would be very happy to do that. -- school

:37:48.:37:50.

singles. APPLAUSE

:37:51.:38:50.

Once again, a nice one for his favourite jack length.

:38:51.:38:56.

Gary is going to have to try and extend this set as long as humanly

:38:57.:39:08.

possible, trying to play his way into this match. He is already

:39:09.:39:11.

playing his practice time in the match, that is never a good idea,

:39:12.:39:14.

unfortunately he has been forced into that.

:39:15.:39:37.

It looks a better line in this time for Gary. Going past, the winner,

:39:38.:40:01.

well played. APPLAUSE

:40:02.:40:08.

Eight inches. The crowd may not know Gary very well, but we as players

:40:09.:40:16.

do. We know what he's capable of. And so does Alex Marshall. Alex will

:40:17.:40:24.

want to keep the pressure on, trying to beat every time, trying to beat

:40:25.:40:30.

it with the first ball. This is a chance for Gary to get a double.

:40:31.:40:56.

He wants the double now. That's more like it. He will be tempted with

:40:57.:41:01.

this. Yes, I think so. There is a shot for Alex, if he

:41:02.:41:15.

really wants to play it he will go into, you know, if he gets into that

:41:16.:41:21.

there is a chance of the two bowls going, and that one will go there.

:41:22.:41:26.

But if he gets the outside one, the red bowl will actually go up the

:41:27.:41:32.

green. That might lock in. But two against, he is drawing well. Yes,

:41:33.:41:39.

the thing is that the draws this time were blocked. I think he might

:41:40.:41:43.

be tempted with the running throw. -- bowl. 8-2 up, I think we will see

:41:44.:41:53.

a running bowl here. Got the best back as well as there is any jack

:41:54.:41:55.

movement. Looking for his own red bowl onto

:41:56.:42:10.

the Greens, can he hold? It shows you how difficult that running bowl

:42:11.:42:16.

is on the forehand. Just it bowl tight, this is a good chance for

:42:17.:42:18.

Gary. It will be a whole lot better. Down on an excellent line. It has to

:42:19.:42:39.

be up to give its chance, it must be reaching. Two shots, Gary Kelly.

:42:40.:42:46.

APPLAUSE Alex Marshall will be relieved

:42:47.:42:48.

enough just to lose the double. Thinking to himself now, just one

:42:49.:42:58.

more shot and that will close out the set. As hard as that is, those

:42:59.:43:03.

little extra shot there, when you are playing somebody like Alex you

:43:04.:43:08.

must take advantage. It is easy to get that in, you're looking for a

:43:09.:43:16.

two and one to get something else in. Two doubles to tie the set, a

:43:17.:43:23.

hard task. Gary didn't really want that jack up at 29 metres. I reckon

:43:24.:43:29.

it probably was a couple of metres short of the mat. -- shorter than

:43:30.:43:33.

that. Not getting his first bowl up here.

:43:34.:43:50.

Not putting any pressure on with the first delivery. If you are not doing

:43:51.:43:54.

that, you are going to be in a cube of trouble. -- heap of trouble.

:43:55.:44:11.

Alex is getting a free run here on the first delivery.

:44:12.:44:32.

Well, it is in. But definitely beatable. Gary moving onto the

:44:33.:45:12.

forehand. Ten inches, just over a foot. If you rests the last ball he

:45:13.:45:19.

will get the shot, but it is moving on the forehand. A little bonus on

:45:20.:45:23.

the forehand if you get a touch on the jack. Two shots. Four against on

:45:24.:45:31.

the scoreboard, probably thinks he needs at least a two dissent. He has

:45:32.:45:35.

got a chance with this. It touches, it makes a double -- two on this

:45:36.:45:39.

end. He did really well. What a reply. Oh, this is massive.

:45:40.:46:16.

What a reply. I thought he was drawing the shot. But a good second,

:46:17.:46:20.

he won't be very happy with that. He certainly will be more than happy in

:46:21.:46:22.

the last end. Three shots up. A lot of concentration there with

:46:23.:46:37.

Gary, you can see his eyes moving to the Lyme of where he wants to put

:46:38.:46:41.

the ball. Just not reaching with this one. A little bit of both, as

:46:42.:46:45.

they say. I'm sure Alex will be looking just to draw. -- eyes moving

:46:46.:46:48.

to the life. -- Main. One shot, Gary Kelly.

:46:49.:47:25.

APPLAUSE At the moment, he is just doing

:47:26.:47:39.

enough really, just about consistent enough and getting close enough to

:47:40.:47:44.

have that gap. He is certainly looking strong enough to win the

:47:45.:47:45.

first set. But he might looking strong enough to win the

:47:46.:47:52.

up a gear in the second set. Yes, I think both players will be looking

:47:53.:47:56.

at, obviously Gary knows he has to up his game to win the second set.

:47:57.:48:01.

But I think he will also want to up it and try and finish the game as

:48:02.:48:07.

early as he possibly can. So, Gary is just starting to come into the

:48:08.:48:14.

match, starting to get his drawing pace that little bit nearer, the

:48:15.:48:19.

first bowl is crucial, he has not been there with his first bowl and

:48:20.:48:24.

he needs to get that one up. He is close this time, but it is not where

:48:25.:48:28.

he needs it, he needs two feet on that. He is a very experienced

:48:29.:48:32.

singles player, he knows that that first bowl is crucial. Especially

:48:33.:48:37.

when you are looking to score big on the last end. Alex drops just

:48:38.:48:44.

anywhere between that and the jack, and it is virtually impossible

:48:45.:48:46.

already to score a big count. Very good.

:48:47.:49:21.

Juan Burnett bowl in from Alex and that is pretty much set over.

:49:22.:49:34.

Perfect line -- one good bowl. As a player, you would be looking at

:49:35.:49:49.

this now, thinking, how can I make three? Sitting here, I'm struggling

:49:50.:49:53.

to think how he can score three shots. The only chance for Gary is

:49:54.:49:58.

to get behind the jack and fall back on it, bring that front bowl into

:49:59.:50:01.

play, I hope he has a chance with the last ball. Three short bowls.

:50:02.:50:09.

Yes, that is really in trouble now. No way he is making three out of

:50:10.:50:14.

this. The concern is the look on his face there. He probably thought he

:50:15.:50:18.

was close. I think with the second and the third bowl he thought his

:50:19.:50:21.

pace was good. He dropped a good metres short. -- a good meter. This

:50:22.:50:33.

one should finish it off. Good enough. Driving forehand, take one

:50:34.:50:39.

ball out and hold is done in for the other one, that is the only chance.

:50:40.:50:40.

-- stun. Just the way Gary is sitting at this

:50:41.:50:57.

one, trying to get into that ball, if you move that ball and stones

:50:58.:51:01.

through want of this one, he has got a chance. But realistically -- is

:51:02.:51:06.

done through. He is leaving Alex far too much room to play but he has to

:51:07.:51:11.

try and play it. He does have to try. If he gets the perfect contact

:51:12.:51:16.

on the red, he could take the three reds way, but it leaves Alex in

:51:17.:51:21.

awful lot of room to throw one in with his fourth and win the set. It

:51:22.:51:25.

would be a confidence booster if he could get it, though. If I was him I

:51:26.:51:29.

would think about driving this pretty hard. It wouldn't do him any

:51:30.:51:34.

harm to get a bit of a loose nut. -- loosener.

:51:35.:51:43.

An lucky in some respects, he played it well but didn't get the right

:51:44.:51:53.

connection -- unlucky. I think the scoreline is just about right,

:51:54.:51:58.

really, 9-5. Alex wasn't really under an awful lot of pressure. Yes,

:51:59.:52:03.

I think it reflects the game. I think Alex was quite consistent, he

:52:04.:52:07.

has done more than enough to win the set. Gary has struggled to get going

:52:08.:52:12.

a little bit. But I think he has shown signs in the last two or three

:52:13.:52:16.

ends. Hopefully he can perform a bit better in the second set and we can

:52:17.:52:22.

have a much tighter match. Yes, it is almost like you was sort of

:52:23.:52:28.

playing himself into the game -- he was. It had that feel about it. As

:52:29.:52:33.

opposed to coming on fairly prepared. And he knows that himself.

:52:34.:52:39.

He knew that he would be late here because of the National is, so... He

:52:40.:52:44.

was just hoping that he would find it quickly -- the nationals.

:52:45.:52:51.

There is very little chance of Alex having an off day when it comes to

:52:52.:52:55.

playing here at this venue. It rarely happens. Very little chance

:52:56.:53:02.

of having an off day, period, I think. Except when we played the

:53:03.:53:10.

Welsh international! He didn't really like the venue for some

:53:11.:53:15.

reason, I don't know why. Yes, that wasn't his best hunting ground. As

:53:16.:53:21.

soon as it was moved to Blackpool... That was brilliant for Alex, he won

:53:22.:53:22.

it. He needed to work hard to get

:53:23.:53:35.

everybody back in the frame again. APPLAUSE

:53:36.:53:55.

That's better. It is interesting to think of Alex four years ago, he was

:53:56.:53:59.

ranked number 13 in the world. And he was one match away from

:54:00.:54:05.

potentially going out of the top 16. But he won that match. The following

:54:06.:54:11.

season he was number six. The following season four. And now

:54:12.:54:17.

number three. It shows you sometimes when everybody thinks that you are

:54:18.:54:21.

rock-solid, think of the number of titles that Alex won in the last

:54:22.:54:24.

four years, and he was just one match away from really having to or

:54:25.:54:32.

five. It takes a small run of poor performances or poor results, to be

:54:33.:54:35.

honest with you. APPLAUSE

:54:36.:54:41.

Paul Foster was actually the same at one stage. He was on the edge of

:54:42.:54:47.

going out. It is exactly jack high. Your last one was ten inches.

:54:48.:54:57.

Alex doesn't look comfortable at this end. Playing, running, looking

:54:58.:55:12.

for the two green bowls juice but -- to split away. Well, he will take

:55:13.:55:18.

that. No problem with the result there, he hit the target area. You

:55:19.:55:23.

give him acknowledgement there, but he wasn't far away from getting what

:55:24.:55:25.

he was looking for. Gary needs to get something close.

:55:26.:55:39.

It is big, swinging balls, isn't it? Read on the green spot. I think if

:55:40.:55:46.

Alex plays his forehand he is going to be very close to the site ditch.

:55:47.:55:53.

He may choose to go across -- side ditch. Is this about a limit, a foot

:55:54.:55:58.

inside towards the ditch, that would be about the limit where you have to

:55:59.:56:02.

play across the head. Of Yearsley, the Jack is a foot outside the spot.

:56:03.:56:04.

-- obviously. The problem here with the cameraman

:56:05.:56:15.

moving the boom as Alex was about to play that delivery.

:56:16.:56:25.

They have reset the shot clock, and no time-out will be applied in that

:56:26.:56:33.

situation when there is an external destruction. He needs to miss Gary's

:56:34.:56:41.

bowl to win. Wrong side of it, good weight, perfect weight, but very

:56:42.:56:46.

hard to pick out the line going across. Good opportunity for Gary to

:56:47.:56:49.

school two at the end of the second set. I'm not sure he is out there

:56:50.:56:57.

wide enough. He was right on the top edge corner.

:56:58.:57:02.

He is out there wide enough, just about.

:57:03.:57:07.

APPLAUSE When he was standing on the mat on

:57:08.:57:12.

the inside edge, he was given every opportunity, but he has made the

:57:13.:57:17.

double. He deserved that, he drew two shot in with his first and

:57:18.:57:20.

second, that has split the head open. It is two more to the replaced

:57:21.:57:27.

jack. A great end to that for Gary, it gets him in the match.

:57:28.:57:32.

He felt he needed to start the second set well. A perfect start for

:57:33.:57:38.

him. Barry sticking to long jack length,

:57:39.:57:59.

which has been the favoured length of Alex Marshall -- Gary. This looks

:58:00.:58:02.

better. APPLAUSE

:58:03.:58:05.

That's more like it. I don't quite know what the

:58:06.:58:38.

disturbance was there, but something clearly disturbed Alex.

:58:39.:58:49.

Gary just missing the opportunity to get close to the red bowl.

:58:50.:00:08.

Once to get him for a good 2nd. -- want is to get in.

:00:09.:00:33.

Yes, falling onto a good shoulder. Good chance for Alex to rest. He

:00:34.:00:43.

will be happy with that. Four inches past.

:00:44.:00:51.

Lovely, smooth delivery, Alex Marshall, always been the same.

:00:52.:00:58.

Never had any problems with the bounce or anything like that. Get

:00:59.:01:03.

the bowl away absolutely perfect. Good end. Maybe just stops that

:01:04.:01:12.

forehand shot that Gary might have been contemplating. I think so, it

:01:13.:01:18.

would have been a forehand draw, just the perfect backhand draw

:01:19.:01:20.

available for him now, I think. APPLAUSE

:01:21.:01:32.

Good effort. 6 inches away. As you say, Greg, signs of Gary

:01:33.:02:00.

Kelly coming in, Surrey bowls that are very, very handy. Not much room

:02:01.:02:13.

for Alex to add a 2nd. When he is on form, he slides these in. Down on a

:02:14.:02:17.

great road. Just needs to run. Great effort! If he had dropped,

:02:18.:02:31.

that was a definite... He just touched it down there. 1 shot, Alex

:02:32.:02:37.

Marshall. APPLAUSE

:02:38.:02:40.

We all do that, what would have happened if I did this, it makes no

:02:41.:02:46.

difference to the game. We like the answer, that is all! On another day,

:02:47.:02:51.

it would have dropped in. APPLAUSE

:02:52.:03:27.

Very good. The last end, he had a really good 1st bowl in and he has

:03:28.:03:30.

done it again. Great reply. Come on, Gary!

:03:31.:03:51.

APPLAUSE Looks like we have got a match on

:03:52.:04:10.

our hands in the 2nd set. Both players, they have played to perfect

:04:11.:04:16.

up in bowls. -- perfect opening balls.

:04:17.:04:28.

It is nearly 2 inches. Not a lot of room to add a 2nd. Might be an idea

:04:29.:04:37.

to slide hast the jack and get into position. -- slide past the jack.

:04:38.:04:52.

He did not want to touch that. Well... As you say, Greg, anything

:04:53.:05:02.

behind, I think you would have been better on the forehand, personally.

:05:03.:05:06.

I think behind would have been good. Alex may be tempted to try and punch

:05:07.:05:13.

this through. Yes, a little bit more of a target, as well.

:05:14.:05:23.

Inside line, with a little bit of weight. Just hanging off. Now, what

:05:24.:05:33.

is he going to do with the green? Nearly got to the jack Clifford but

:05:34.:05:38.

he has pushed it into a good place for Gary. Probably the only shop

:05:39.:05:47.

that Alex has got is the forehand draw, it may be worth trying to

:05:48.:05:52.

block the forehand draw. Gary Wilson trouble to make another. -- Gary

:05:53.:06:04.

will struggle. Going deep. Cannot really blame him. That is OK. If

:06:05.:06:11.

Alex turns the jack Alex will have a shot to punch into it. Quite a

:06:12.:06:18.

deliberate shot. The forehand draw available for Alex.

:06:19.:06:28.

I think he is a touch wide on this. Turns back on it.

:06:29.:06:47.

If I was Gary, I would take the 1 and run.

:06:48.:06:57.

Yes, there are times to walk away! More than a practice shot, he is

:06:58.:07:07.

trying to get in but there does not look to be enough room, to be

:07:08.:07:14.

honest. Safe enough. 1 shot, Gary Kelly!

:07:15.:07:14.

APPLAUSE They are is Alex's wife, Diane. Give

:07:15.:07:43.

a wave, go on! She always has a big smile. I have never, ever seen her

:07:44.:07:49.

not in a good mood. Always been a happy girl!

:07:50.:07:54.

Jack length, 29 1/2 metres. Always happy, always smiling. Alex is 3- 1

:07:55.:08:04.

down, under pressure. Diane has a big smile on her face.

:08:05.:08:19.

Gary falling into that trap again, going long, dropping a yard short.

:08:20.:08:40.

Alex is looking good. That surprised me.

:08:41.:09:02.

Got to be further with this 1. Certainly, made a correction.

:09:03.:09:10.

APPLAUSE We expect Alex to be bad. -- to beat

:09:11.:09:16.

that. I thought he would, and he has. Just

:09:17.:09:45.

over a 3rd. An inch and a half... The last time proved it as well, you

:09:46.:09:50.

have to be within 2 or 3 inches with at least 1 of your bowls. Putting

:09:51.:09:53.

Alex under pressure. Yes, you don't want to leave it to

:09:54.:10:12.

the 3rd or 4th bowls-macro. Darryl -- bowl. He looked to add 6 inches

:10:13.:10:21.

to a foot on the last, he would like to pass the jack, beat the green.

:10:22.:10:29.

Yes, this would be a big, deep draw at the end. Not sure if that is

:10:30.:10:38.

going to count or not. Maybe just still 1. Yes, just the 1. Just a

:10:39.:10:45.

draw for Gary Kelly, either side, does not really matter. Firstly, it

:10:46.:10:51.

would be the forehand for me because if you touch the bowl on the way in

:10:52.:10:55.

you are bringing it away from the jack, on the backhand, pushing it

:10:56.:11:01.

towards the jack. He would have seen the angles. Good judgement.

:11:02.:11:09.

Playing slightly inside the line this time. Yes, as soon as a player

:11:10.:11:16.

starts to lean, you get the feeling they are not going to get back, a

:11:17.:11:19.

better 2nd. APPLAUSE

:11:20.:11:22.

Yes, I think he would have been happy with a Polish on the bowl onto

:11:23.:11:29.

the jack. -- with a push. Low percentage shot. I think that is

:11:30.:11:35.

what he tried but had never looked like getting back. Just an a few

:11:36.:11:45.

inches in here. For a 2nd shot. The line is good enough. The front plant

:11:46.:11:55.

would be good. A little wiggle, but not enough. 1 shot, Alex Marshall.

:11:56.:11:59.

APPLAUSE A tight hold set. The set score, 2-

:12:00.:12:08.

3 after four ends. Well, Alex looking for the good 1st

:12:09.:12:51.

bowl. The backhand. And he has got it.

:12:52.:12:51.

APPLAUSE Well, Gary has been dropping short

:12:52.:13:26.

with his 1st 1, making sure he was through with the 1st 1. At least,

:13:27.:13:31.

offer himself an opportunity to get to the head.

:13:32.:13:56.

That looks under... I cannot see Gary holding that line. It tips

:13:57.:14:07.

away. Using his strong bias all macro. Did not have to wait, still

:14:08.:14:17.

underneath the line. He will punish him with this one. Yes, it just

:14:18.:14:25.

depends for the bowl finishes. Quarter shot is available for Gary.

:14:26.:14:32.

It is a very good bowl, offers no target. Nothing close for Gary,

:14:33.:14:43.

either. He will have to run the bowls off, needs a really good draw

:14:44.:14:48.

shot, still one shot in front in the set. Looks like he is tracking

:14:49.:14:55.

through a bit. Yes, there it goes. Well... There is a shot on here for

:14:56.:15:02.

Gary with his next bowl if he is prepared to try it so Alex may be

:15:03.:15:06.

thinking, I might need a little bit of cover. Yes, he might play the

:15:07.:15:13.

forehand to try to finish just wide of the head. If he plays this

:15:14.:15:22.

absolutely perfect he could actually score a third and cover at the same

:15:23.:15:23.

time. It needs to arrive. Nope. That is not a third shot. I

:15:24.:15:44.

think... I think Gary needs to make sure he is arriving at this and give

:15:45.:15:51.

it a little chance. Not too heavy. Well... If I was Gary and think I

:15:52.:15:55.

would be playing one of his big drives. It is available to him. He

:15:56.:16:02.

will run out of time. He is using a time out. If he gets one of them and

:16:03.:16:08.

push is one of his own out, he is three down. If he takes one away,

:16:09.:16:14.

damage limitation. Looking very straight on the matter. So difficult

:16:15.:16:22.

with a reaching bowl. Trying that, controlled weight, heavier than I

:16:23.:16:23.

thought he might play. Just inside. Set score for-macro-3 after five

:16:24.:16:30.

ends. Judy Potter, in black and white

:16:31.:16:59.

today. Probably not quite, actually, it is

:17:00.:17:19.

probably clotted cream. I don't think Judy Dawes normal black and

:17:20.:17:24.

white. I am sure it will have a fancy name. I will have to get a

:17:25.:17:33.

list of it, just to be sure! Alex will be looking to get the first

:17:34.:17:37.

bowl in very close. Keep the pressure on Gary, push towards the

:17:38.:17:43.

winning line. Missing quite a few short bowls from both players.

:17:44.:18:19.

We always like to hear about other sportsmen over the years that watch

:18:20.:18:28.

the game. We have one watching today, great supporter of David

:18:29.:18:34.

Gourlay. Les Brickley, watching with his wife, Hazel. Played goalkeeper

:18:35.:18:40.

for Birmingham said! Long before we were born. In the late 40s. Even I

:18:41.:18:47.

wasn't born then! I wasn't going to say anything. I got in there be for

:18:48.:18:55.

you. A huge fan of the game, played it for a long time. Les, good luck

:18:56.:18:59.

to you, I hope you are enjoying this match. A lot of good footballers

:19:00.:19:05.

over the years have played the game of bowls.

:19:06.:19:14.

And please contact the world bolster and tell us if you know any, it is

:19:15.:19:33.

always good. -- bowls tour. The last bowl is 15 inches short of jack

:19:34.:19:42.

high. Backhand, a little swap? Still plenty of room to add a second.

:19:43.:19:49.

Looking pretty good. APPLAUSE

:19:50.:19:57.

A chance at this. Well played. Just left it a little shoulder.

:19:58.:20:05.

Well... Alex loves the sport hand, he has played some absolutely

:20:06.:20:11.

brilliant bowls on it in the last week or so and I think a shoulder is

:20:12.:20:21.

very tempting for him. Jogging after it, normally a sign that he likes

:20:22.:20:29.

it. Hunting the bowl down. Whether it is going to stay up or not...

:20:30.:20:35.

Well... Following in against the bias, through the gap. Might have

:20:36.:20:41.

taken one off. I think it's just one, Gary. The front one. Yes...

:20:42.:20:51.

Close, but I think... Sandra has got it absolutely right.

:20:52.:21:08.

Good line, again, from Gary but does he have enough pace? It does not

:21:09.:21:12.

look like it. I think both of these are good...

:21:13.:21:23.

They will both declare the shot on they are totally unsure. Alex has

:21:24.:21:33.

definitely got a good eye on that. I never know with Gary, he just leaves

:21:34.:21:35.

it to me! Now I am getting more and more

:21:36.:21:48.

useless at it as time goes on. Different coloured bowls, never

:21:49.:21:49.

easy. Well... See about the front one...

:21:50.:22:16.

Not going through. Looks like Sandra got back spot-on. Two shots, Gary

:22:17.:22:28.

Kelly. That is surprising, I did not think the back one was in body good

:22:29.:22:32.

call for Gary Kelly. Get the umpiring. -- get the umpire in.

:22:33.:22:45.

Just the one. I was wondering, but did not look like two to us. I think

:22:46.:22:55.

what happened... Alan took one out and moved the bowl to get his chucks

:22:56.:23:02.

out. I am fixing my scorecard yet again! Jack length, 28 metres. Both

:23:03.:23:09.

players are happy with that. They knew it was one. Yes. We had a very

:23:10.:23:15.

good view of those measures and you could tell, it just went through. No

:23:16.:23:20.

problems with the players and that is always good.

:23:21.:23:23.

APPLAUSE That is a bit of a run for home,

:23:24.:23:32.

three ends to go, 4-4. Alex moved onto the forehand,

:23:33.:23:57.

backhand is still available for Gary.

:23:58.:24:03.

He still could come around it but he might be tempted on the forehand. He

:24:04.:24:07.

will try it. Yes, any mess is a goodness, inside

:24:08.:24:24.

or outside his own. -- any mess is a good miss.

:24:25.:24:30.

Probably had the weight on to turn the ball, rather than draw it

:24:31.:24:33.

inside. Any correction here from Alex, he

:24:34.:24:47.

will be bang on the jack. Anything past his own... Well... Still 15 or

:24:48.:24:57.

18 inches short. He is leaving it open on the

:24:58.:25:06.

forehand for Alex, I would not let him have another go. Better to drop

:25:07.:25:12.

in on the forehand. Well... Gary, big drive up the first time, taking

:25:13.:25:20.

one of his own, he wanted the two front Reds. I am not sure about

:25:21.:25:26.

that. I think Gary thinks they are a lot closer than they are. Lots of

:25:27.:25:32.

time outs, he should go up and have a look. Vital end. About 15 inches,

:25:33.:25:42.

quite close for a shot. Gary could easily have taken his own green out.

:25:43.:25:47.

He would be better taking a walk up and having a look at this. He has

:25:48.:25:54.

not visited the head many times and it does not look like he will do it

:25:55.:25:59.

now. That is the way to play at. Just inside, perfect.

:26:00.:26:06.

Gary must come and look at the head, surely? Just going to play a draw.

:26:07.:26:24.

Goodness me. Just playing the draw. He gives another one away. It have

:26:25.:26:31.

to be reaching. Must be reaching. This is two coming in if he had

:26:32.:26:43.

said. Hear me! Now then... He gets the green bowl out, he scores three

:26:44.:26:52.

shots. Great opportunity. Well, there is a definite shot on. Play

:26:53.:26:58.

the forehand or edge it out on the backhand? The advantage with the

:26:59.:27:03.

forehand if he plays it... I think the forehand, all the angles are

:27:04.:27:06.

covered, I think it looks like a good forehand shot. If he plays it,

:27:07.:27:12.

it is good but if he gets into that, he brings in the other bowls. It

:27:13.:27:19.

does not look like anything set of the forehand. The backhand is risky,

:27:20.:27:25.

looks like a good forehand, positive shot. Interesting to see how he

:27:26.:27:30.

plays this, could draw another one. It would be safer to draw. This

:27:31.:27:40.

could be a matchwinner. It has that look about it, he is going to play

:27:41.:27:46.

at. Yes, he is. Can he hold long enough? Can he hold long enough?

:27:47.:27:52.

There it goes. It just picks like mad. When you are slightly inside,

:27:53.:28:00.

but a nice weight for the job. One shot, Alex Marshall.

:28:01.:28:03.

APPLAUSE Definitely worth a go, it was a

:28:04.:28:08.

matchwinner if he got at. The set scorer is 5-4 after seven ends. Gary

:28:09.:28:17.

is still in turgid at 5-4. Strange shot. -- Gary is still in touch.

:28:18.:28:25.

I think he thought the bowls be a lot closer. He has got to win two

:28:26.:28:40.

ends to get it into a tie-break. Jack length, 28 and a half metres.

:28:41.:29:02.

APPLAUSE Great opening bowl.

:29:03.:29:20.

I think Gary has two win these ends. I agree. Would be very happy with

:29:21.:29:29.

two singles, a good reply. APPLAUSE

:29:30.:29:39.

Considering Gary was playing over the weekend and out very late, he

:29:40.:29:46.

has put in a really good fist, given a go at it, no doubt about that.

:29:47.:29:51.

Very much in this second set, on balance. I think he was deliberately

:29:52.:30:02.

looking for the back green bowl, to give himself position.

:30:03.:30:26.

It is just going to be the wrong side, I think. Yes.

:30:27.:30:44.

Looking to draw the number one shot here.

:30:45.:30:52.

As I say, he does like this forehand. Brilliant.

:30:53.:31:00.

APPLAUSE Well, that will change Gary's

:31:01.:31:01.

thoughts now. The key to this one was getting get

:31:02.:31:15.

behind the jack. Absolutely perfect. -- getting it.

:31:16.:31:27.

Time-out called. Gary has two time-outs remaining. The way that

:31:28.:31:35.

Gary plays, he could take the other one away if he gets the ball into

:31:36.:31:41.

there. Never mind the shop. I think he has stated. He has to drive, he

:31:42.:31:46.

has to make contact to give himself a chance with the last bowl. If he

:31:47.:31:52.

makes perfect contact he could get the two reds out if he gets the

:31:53.:32:00.

perfect contact. He has stated. Oh, goodness me, that was close, he

:32:01.:32:05.

could have got the right angle that moved the jack at least. But now he

:32:06.:32:07.

is in trouble. I think Alex will probably cover the

:32:08.:32:23.

spot. I think Gary has got the two best bowls on the respot. I think

:32:24.:32:27.

Alex will just push a little wide and cover the respot. -- wider. He

:32:28.:32:34.

will be in a great position then. Almost the perfect end, this, for

:32:35.:32:48.

Alex. Two on the jack, and the spot covered, you cannot do any better

:32:49.:32:53.

than that. He has just about got the spot covered, look at that. On the

:32:54.:32:59.

nose. Can't see it, doesn't know where it is on the mat. Not only

:33:00.:33:07.

does Gary have to hit the target, he has to get the edge and get the two

:33:08.:33:12.

away. Anything else and Alex has it covered. More or less match over.

:33:13.:33:17.

Yes, he doesn't want any jack movement this time. First of all, he

:33:18.:33:21.

has take the target. He is inside it. Still only does the two, the two

:33:22.:33:32.

third shots. Two shots, Alex Marshall. It has been a test for

:33:33.:33:38.

Alex this match, in many respects. Sometimes there is no value in

:33:39.:33:42.

winning a match very easily. But I have a feeling that he will be quite

:33:43.:33:47.

happy with this. Absolutely. He knows it is a tough game against

:33:48.:33:51.

Gary and he will be very glad to come through this, barring a major

:33:52.:33:56.

disaster on the last end, which I can't see happening.

:33:57.:34:04.

That is where Gary has been scoring singles and doubles.

:34:05.:34:29.

APPLAUSE Yes, great opening bowl again.

:34:30.:34:37.

Played pretty steady all the way through the game.

:34:38.:34:49.

Alex will just be looking to pack the head, make sure he doesn't leave

:34:50.:35:14.

an opening for Gary Kelly to score any more. Although he really wants

:35:15.:35:22.

to. He will be happy to lose a single, double or treble, it will

:35:23.:35:29.

not matter to him. Gary needs four. No mistakes, he needs every bowl in.

:35:30.:35:37.

He is pushing it forward, but it is not going to arrive. That is going

:35:38.:35:44.

to make it very difficult, because Alex can afford now to reach himself

:35:45.:35:48.

any lengthening of the jack, and it will take that front ball well out

:35:49.:35:50.

of contention. APPLAUSE

:35:51.:36:12.

Better take a wee chance, Gary, try and push one or two of these red

:36:13.:36:19.

want out. A good forehand, Greg. Can't afford to get too heavy, got

:36:20.:36:25.

to keep this bowl in the area. Well-controlled and on a decent

:36:26.:36:33.

looking lie. Wants to drop in the red. Didn't stop on the first one,

:36:34.:36:37.

needed to stop there. Alex can pop another one in. He might even

:36:38.:36:44.

swapped of the forehand and just keep another one away from the other

:36:45.:36:49.

deuce rather than punching three together. Yes, you don't want to

:36:50.:36:53.

group them. Gary Kelly is more than capable of taking more than three

:36:54.:36:58.

balls of the ring. Two feet wide on the forehand would be absolutely

:36:59.:36:59.

perfect. Pushing it out wide and making sure

:37:00.:37:28.

he is not anywhere near the front bowl. Just looking for a decent

:37:29.:37:35.

weight. Well, he is trying to encourage it forward but I think

:37:36.:37:38.

that probably is going to beat the back one. It does, it is plenty good

:37:39.:37:45.

enough. Get out of that, Gary. There is no chance. The best he can do

:37:46.:37:53.

here is three, surely. There is a possibility, Greg, but I don't know

:37:54.:37:55.

of the angles are absolutely right to allow for it.

:37:56.:38:00.

Time-out called. It is going to be a difficult one for him to play. If he

:38:01.:38:08.

gets down on the backhand with a slight angle of the ball, he might

:38:09.:38:13.

get onto that to take that away and move the jack. But, oh, goodness me,

:38:14.:38:18.

I don't know if the angles are right for it. I think the only way here is

:38:19.:38:24.

if he hit his own bowl with a deep screw forward... No, it is

:38:25.:38:29.

impossible! That is a new Q-Tip you are using there. We need an old one

:38:30.:38:34.

for that sort of shot. I can't see anything that works. It is just the

:38:35.:38:38.

way that Gary plays. It is possible for him to take the two bowls, he

:38:39.:38:42.

has to get the angles come back onto the jack and extend the head for

:38:43.:38:47.

four. I think it is actually possible to play it. But it would be

:38:48.:38:49.

difficult from two yards away. I think he has to try it. I don't

:38:50.:39:00.

think there is any other way around it.

:39:01.:39:06.

The million to one shot. He is on the forehand, I can't see him

:39:07.:39:11.

getting it on the forehand. I can see what he is after now, the

:39:12.:39:18.

front ball through. 1-shot, Gary Kelly. Set and match to

:39:19.:39:34.

Alex Marshall. Really difficult. Nothing easy about that shot. A

:39:35.:39:38.

comprehensive and professional display their by Alex Marshall.

:39:39.:39:44.

David very, very good. Very steady, to be honest with you, and he played

:39:45.:39:48.

the big bowls when needed. Looking good. Two sets. 9-5, 7-5. Alex

:39:49.:40:00.

Marshall tested, but you will be delighted to move into the second

:40:01.:40:10.

round without too much trouble. Gary Kelly, the 26-year-old. Alex

:40:11.:40:14.

Marshall is 48, the six time world Champion chicken hands at the start

:40:15.:40:21.

of the game. -- shaking hands. That's Gary Kelly, just looking to

:40:22.:40:25.

drop in on the ball to get the two that he needed and actually give

:40:26.:40:30.

himself a chance on the first set. Going on that, the first end of the

:40:31.:40:34.

second set, we see I could marshal, there he goes, putting the pressure

:40:35.:40:38.

on Gary all the way, -- we see Alex Marshall.

:40:39.:40:44.

And yet again, keeping the pressure on.

:40:45.:40:50.

And Alex Marshall just never fields, really, it just keeps drawing,

:40:51.:40:59.

drawing, drawing, doing the business every time, and he ran out of very

:41:00.:41:03.

good winner. It is always good to see somebody being pushed like that.

:41:04.:41:08.

But look at the end one, ten against eight, very little in it. -- the

:41:09.:41:15.

ends one. Alex Marshall was more consistent than Gary Kelly. The

:41:16.:41:19.

defending champion has eased his way into the second round. I have to

:41:20.:41:23.

say, he will be happy about that. He knows he has got a few gears to move

:41:24.:41:27.

up but it is always good to get a bit of a test in the first round.

:41:28.:41:33.

STUDIO: Good for Alex Marshall to get through, a tough first round.

:41:34.:41:37.

Facing up against a man like the six time champion, it was always going

:41:38.:41:41.

to be difficult. How do you sum up the way that you play today? Yes, it

:41:42.:41:45.

was always going to be difficult. Alex is the reigning champion. I am

:41:46.:41:49.

disappointed with my performance, to be honest. Just inconsistent. Just

:41:50.:41:57.

didn't get the ball is in enough to try and put Alex under pressure.

:41:58.:42:01.

Credit to Alex, he played the better bowls. He deserved the victory. He

:42:02.:42:06.

did make you work a bit in both sets. I was very blue with the way I

:42:07.:42:10.

started off, very well. I put Gary under pressure Bhogle I was very.

:42:11.:42:16.

Gary has been a lot more consistent than that and he is more than

:42:17.:42:19.

capable of winning the one months. In the second set I dropped off and

:42:20.:42:22.

Gary came on a little bit, it could have gone either way. Wiesberger

:42:23.:42:26.

yesterday about pressure. As you said, once you are on the brink,

:42:27.:42:32.

there can be no nerves -- rink. How does it feel to be out here as the

:42:33.:42:37.

defending champion? It is always good to come back and defend the

:42:38.:42:40.

title, I love the place and I try not to put too much pressure on

:42:41.:42:44.

myself. Getting the first set and your belt settles you down and help

:42:45.:42:48.

you a lot. Gary came back strongly in the second set and did better

:42:49.:42:51.

than he did in the first. That set could have gone either way.

:42:52.:42:56.

Congratulations, and commiserations, Gary, and hopefully we will see you

:42:57.:43:04.

back here in 12 months' time. We're going to chat about a match that

:43:05.:43:07.

took place this morning between Mark Dawes, the 33-year-old from

:43:08.:43:11.

Lancashire. Seeded number 16. Up against Jamie Smith from Queensland

:43:12.:43:15.

in Australia. Deeney is making his first appearance here at Potters. --

:43:16.:43:20.

Jamie. In the first set Jamie struggled to cope with Mark, Mark

:43:21.:43:24.

one that comfortably taking it 9-2. We are going to join it in the

:43:25.:43:30.

second set, Mark Dawes leads to-0 as we draw it -- drawing it in the

:43:31.:43:36.

second end. Robert Paxton in the commentary box.

:43:37.:43:51.

APPLAUSE COMMENTATOR: Carrying on where he

:43:52.:44:02.

left off in the first set here. His first bowl has been pretty good

:44:03.:44:03.

today. Jimmy is a typical Aussie, he is

:44:04.:44:15.

very laid back. He has a sense of humour. An easy-going sort of guy,

:44:16.:44:23.

but he does speak his mind. And it doesn't always go down well with

:44:24.:44:25.

officialdom back in Australia. Especially when you are looking to

:44:26.:44:36.

get onto elite squads and things like that, where they are not really

:44:37.:44:42.

happy about people voicing their opinions.

:44:43.:44:48.

Like most sports, there is a little bit of politics in there. Yes,

:44:49.:44:56.

definitely. You have to lead to a bowls do the talking, basically,

:44:57.:45:01.

that is the easiest way. -- let your bowls do the talking. This is not

:45:02.:45:03.

wasted by any means. Well, that is another shot, the jack

:45:04.:45:26.

are still available, it doesn't help the drive shot, so it has to be a

:45:27.:45:31.

draw, hanging off the middle of the mat, see how he gets back with that

:45:32.:45:32.

one. It is all about weak here. Chasing

:45:33.:45:45.

began. You cannot afford it. -- it is all about weight here. -- chasing

:45:46.:45:50.

it again. He had the line straight. You cannot afford to be through the

:45:51.:45:51.

head. It wouldn't be so bad if the jack

:45:52.:46:02.

was readily available for a little trail. But it is a hard shot in the

:46:03.:46:04.

hand. Just close this right out now. Yes,

:46:05.:46:17.

it is a choice, really, do you draw and try and block up that gap, or do

:46:18.:46:22.

you cover the back balls just in case Jimmy decides to come

:46:23.:46:28.

throughout it? -- threw at it. Another shot, a bit of a shoulder,

:46:29.:46:33.

but Jimmy has a big yard off. It is the right side of the jack so he

:46:34.:46:37.

cannot use it to get it onto the jack. It is a pressure bowl now for

:46:38.:46:39.

Jamie. I think in a normal club game you

:46:40.:46:49.

would play down a narrow line, it will hold an drop in. But narrow

:46:50.:46:53.

lines in the portable rink are dangerous. The best you can do here

:46:54.:46:59.

is to take one of. Just in the wrong side. Three shots, Mark Dawes. You

:47:00.:47:10.

were saying Jimmy would like to give Mark Dawes a lead in the second set,

:47:11.:47:13.

but 5-0 after two ends is not great. We can see the jack lengths. Jimmy

:47:14.:47:34.

trying the long 29.5. Not much variation there, 29 to 27 has been

:47:35.:47:40.

there for most of the game. I suggest if Jimmy can get the Jack he

:47:41.:47:46.

goes to 23 or 24. Yes, it is a tough one. He has to change something. The

:47:47.:47:50.

hardest part at the moment is just getting hold of the jack.

:47:51.:47:59.

They are both playing some decent bowls out there at the moment. But

:48:00.:48:08.

Mark is not giving Jamie much opportunity.

:48:09.:48:32.

APPLAUSE Pressure on from Jamie there. One

:48:33.:49:54.

red. Just hanging on still. Well, get on the green ball and

:49:55.:50:18.

fallback would be absolutely perfect, a return of the jack would

:50:19.:50:22.

be good, but he doesn't want it to the green. I think he has been

:50:23.:50:29.

unlucky. He has. One green. It has given Jamie a little opportunity

:50:30.:50:33.

here now. He has the same ball from Jamie and can drop the red down and

:50:34.:50:35.

get three. He's using one of his time-outs

:50:36.:50:45.

here. Time-out called. What he is looking

:50:46.:50:59.

here at is if he can get into the jack or into the ball. Any movement

:51:00.:51:04.

into the jack, preferably in this area here, will make the three

:51:05.:51:07.

shots. He has to be careful he doesn't get the outside edge, the

:51:08.:51:11.

outside edge of the green ball and moving the jack cross. But other

:51:12.:51:15.

than that you looks pretty good for it. He is just repeating his last

:51:16.:51:20.

bowl. Just a fraction of a touch on the jack.

:51:21.:51:26.

In the context of the game, he knows it is a big shot here, an

:51:27.:51:29.

opportunity for him. It was the right idea. But you just

:51:30.:51:50.

have to believe that if you pushed out a little bit more it will stay.

:51:51.:51:59.

APPLAUSE As we said before, it is always the

:52:00.:52:03.

same when we get the fire is coming in. It is very, very hard to get a

:52:04.:52:10.

grip of this portable rink, you have to play those slightly overshot. It

:52:11.:52:15.

does take time to get used the rink, even the home of fires from the

:52:16.:52:19.

UK-based countries, I mean, it even them time to work out what shots the

:52:20.:52:25.

play and shot selection -- the home qualifiers.

:52:26.:53:10.

Needs an adjustment there for Jamie. Two short bowls is always going to

:53:11.:53:39.

be a little movement, but good to see the mat up and the change of

:53:40.:53:42.

lengths from Jamie. That is what we were thinking he would have to do,

:53:43.:53:46.

to try and shake Mark Dawes a little bit. I don't think it will do much

:53:47.:53:51.

in terms of stopping his standard. There we go. He just proves the

:53:52.:53:56.

point. He is used to the mat up as well. It is good for Jamie, it is

:53:57.:54:03.

the right thing to do. It is a measure. They look like they are

:54:04.:54:12.

touching. But they don't. I don't like the look of it! Again, that

:54:13.:54:19.

inside line is just not there. I'm surprised he played it on that side,

:54:20.:54:23.

to be honest. The other side looks favoured to me. I think Mark will be

:54:24.:54:27.

turning over, he is looking to get back on the green. I think both

:54:28.:54:37.

players will change it. Well, it is impossible for us to tell, but there

:54:38.:54:42.

must be some daylight between the bowl and the jack.

:54:43.:54:49.

Mark on the forehand after the backhand draw. He is very close. You

:54:50.:55:01.

have to punch yourself now. That is exactly what Jamie would do on the

:55:02.:55:03.

other side. APPLAUSE

:55:04.:55:11.

Really good bowl. At least one, maybe two. Two shot red. Jamie is

:55:12.:55:20.

left with a very hard shot again, really. I think it is worth little

:55:21.:55:24.

bit stronger at this on his forehand. Time-out called. Trying to

:55:25.:55:35.

let the ball drift slightly around, he can see the red bowl, even from

:55:36.:55:40.

that picture you can see the red bowl. It is available to him, with

:55:41.:55:45.

weight. Just don't try it with a yard on.

:55:46.:55:51.

No, just not strong enough. The right shot, just not enough weight.

:55:52.:56:08.

Mark deciding not even to bother with his last hole. Happy enough to

:56:09.:56:15.

take the double -- with his last bowl. He is absolutely right. 5-1,

:56:16.:56:20.

takes it up to 7-1. Jamie is just getting sucked in,

:56:21.:56:38.

isn't he? Yes, he just hasn't got aggressive. He has been almost very

:56:39.:56:46.

defensive. I say, it is very unusual for the Australian style of play, to

:56:47.:56:50.

be honest, they are very aggressive on the greens they play out there.

:56:51.:56:54.

It is surprised how they do change their game when they come over here.

:56:55.:56:56.

-- surprising. Mark now will be looking to close

:56:57.:57:25.

this out within the next couple of ends. Almost be closing the match

:57:26.:57:34.

out. Indeed, Jamie has been here a few days, at the practising, but the

:57:35.:57:42.

hours and -- had the practising. -- put the hours in. But there is

:57:43.:57:45.

nothing really to beat the matchplay. And you do get called on,

:57:46.:57:50.

you know, it happens to you over the years. I have probably watch more

:57:51.:58:00.

bowls in the portable rink than anyone, and it still sucks me in

:58:01.:58:03.

when you go out there and you go out for that shot occasionally, the

:58:04.:58:06.

little inside runner. It is so hard to play.

:58:07.:58:12.

Good effort. APPLAUSE

:58:13.:58:27.

One red. Bowled short, ten inches short of jack height.

:58:28.:58:42.

They are going to back the short bowls and hide that one right on the

:58:43.:58:59.

blindside. The player doesn't have any idea where it is around the

:59:00.:59:04.

front ones, it makes it even harder now for Jamie. It is not going to

:59:05.:59:09.

get back. Any sort of weight there just doesn't play through. At this

:59:10.:59:13.

stage I thought he might have been tempted to have a runner at it and

:59:14.:59:19.

try and shift something. He is playing to the hard weight again,

:59:20.:59:23.

Mark is going to be looking to cover now. He had a look at the scoreboard

:59:24.:59:31.

there, that is what he was looking at, to see where he was regarding

:59:32.:59:37.

ends and scoring. He realises he cannot afford to lose two shot here.

:59:38.:59:42.

The danger is if he flicks is on ball out he loses three, but to do

:59:43.:59:46.

that he probably has to take the other red. To the left of your

:59:47.:59:50.

picture. It has to be worth playing this. Give each he played a good

:59:51.:59:54.

bowl there, not too far through, but the deepest.

:59:55.:00:00.

To give himself a chance, he has got to get the shot here. Looking a bit

:00:01.:00:20.

better this time. But again, on the inside line. Needs a touch. He has a

:00:21.:00:26.

touch, it might give him second, needed to turn it over once more,

:00:27.:00:34.

good effort. Nicer wait for the job. The Australian way of measuring! One

:00:35.:00:41.

shot, Mark Dawes. Go across to both bowls. Not something that we have

:00:42.:00:49.

taken up over here in the UK. Eight few players do it, on occasion, I do

:00:50.:00:54.

but it is one of those things out there, done by most of the players.

:00:55.:00:57.

Keeps the game moving. A little pick-up. Yes... There it

:00:58.:01:53.

goes. A nice weight, even though he missed it.

:01:54.:02:30.

APPLAUSE Grade from Jamie. -- that is great.

:02:31.:02:46.

Mark Dawes, successful, looking to score as well. Is he prepared to

:02:47.:02:52.

stay aggressive or will he be defensive? That is why he is coming

:02:53.:03:03.

up to have a look. Timeout called. He has got the split available.

:03:04.:03:10.

There is always a chance of the jack going through. If he is able to

:03:11.:03:17.

extend all the way through to hear, it would be excellent. The early

:03:18.:03:24.

danger, if he'd plays a run or a mess, it will give him a bit of

:03:25.:03:30.

room. It must be a quick one. Looking for the two bowls. My...

:03:31.:03:39.

Goodness me... I was certain that was going to take the two of them

:03:40.:03:43.

but it just seemed to dip in the last foot or so. Once again, out of

:03:44.:03:54.

this, smelling of roses. He has been bang on target. But, the end result

:03:55.:04:02.

has been absolutely maximum. Slipping a bit, that time. Did not

:04:03.:04:04.

put it within six inches of the spot. Keeping Jamie under the cosh

:04:05.:04:11.

in this game, not giving him the opportunity to score. No multiples.

:04:12.:04:19.

Not sure that has made it, no, it hasn't. Dropping about four feet

:04:20.:04:26.

short. Mark is now in a position turning to down, to two up. A good

:04:27.:04:35.

game for him, playing some very good bowls, good runners, maximum result.

:04:36.:04:38.

From everyone of them. Followed it up. That is the big thing, every

:04:39.:04:45.

time he hits he is following up with a good draw. He is doing it again.

:04:46.:04:52.

He has done it. That is super stuff, it really is.

:04:53.:04:53.

APPLAUSE Jamie has called the boy on a good

:04:54.:05:10.

day, or a bad day, whatever way you want to look at it! Bit of a

:05:11.:05:24.

surprise. Giving it a chance. He has strong at. Goodlad, well done!

:05:25.:05:33.

APPLAUSE Scores the single, 8-2. One shot,

:05:34.:05:41.

Jamie Smith. With two ends to go, he needs seven shots, I don't think it

:05:42.:05:44.

will happen in this match. He will have to chase it.

:05:45.:05:56.

Playing similar length. Stretching it out a touch.

:05:57.:06:04.

Well, with two shots here for Mark Dawes, this match will be over. The

:06:05.:06:18.

best Jamie can do in the last two ends are to four, level the scores

:06:19.:06:27.

at 10-10 and it is not enough. Another good starter, played well

:06:28.:06:31.

enough to have taken out some other players who have won. Jamie, played

:06:32.:06:39.

some very, very good bowls but Mark Dawes has been very consistent. Yes,

:06:40.:06:46.

the big difference is the shot down, Mark has always converted while

:06:47.:06:53.

Jamie has played in between shots. He got nothing out of them today.

:06:54.:07:05.

He had a chance, to be honest. Yes, Mark will move across. Posted out a

:07:06.:07:19.

little bit wider. It is all about weight and this one will get

:07:20.:07:25.

whacked. That is good. -- will get back. A nice touch.

:07:26.:07:28.

APPLAUSE Giving this a chance. As he got

:07:29.:07:54.

enough to get through the red? Yes, that was good, well done.

:07:55.:08:06.

He has played some very good stuff in this game. More or less come away

:08:07.:08:12.

with virtually nothing, only scoring in three ends but he has been much

:08:13.:08:15.

better than that. Clear road for Mark, it's good. That

:08:16.:08:32.

is a good bowl. Given that, two or three chances, come inside. Jamie

:08:33.:08:40.

has to be looking at this thread. Interesting to say if Jamie plays it

:08:41.:08:44.

out or tries to draw second, that is the thinking process going on at the

:08:45.:08:49.

moment. The double is OK. Timeout called. Perfect connection, get the

:08:50.:08:56.

touch off his own green, into the red.

:08:57.:09:10.

He has got at. Not the jack! No! Dear, oh dear. That is just so

:09:11.:09:26.

unlucky. He looked as if he was going to get that bowl absolutely

:09:27.:09:30.

clean and he will lose the match. No way on earth that Mark Dawes is

:09:31.:09:37.

going to miss this. He was a bowl away, really. Even half a bowl.

:09:38.:09:46.

Really unlucky. Going to put that on the scorecard. Just a shame he

:09:47.:09:51.

hadn't started playing that a little bit earlier in the game, it could

:09:52.:10:03.

have been different. Really, really unlucky. The journey finishes here

:10:04.:10:10.

for him in the first round. Mark Dawes winning 9-2, 10-2, and on

:10:11.:10:21.

first scorer line in many ways. Mark Dawes, the second set and match.

:10:22.:10:27.

Safely through to the second round. Good stuff by Mark Dawes, no doubt.

:10:28.:10:32.

But it looks very one sided but it really wasn't a game like that. Mark

:10:33.:10:38.

was playing well, good hits, maximum results and Jamie got a couple of

:10:39.:10:43.

bad results. Unfortunately, he will be making the long journey home.

:10:44.:10:50.

Mark Dawes has now earned a spot alongside Alex Marshall in the

:10:51.:10:54.

second round. Other matchups include Stuart Anderson against Mervyn King.

:10:55.:10:59.

David Corkill alongside me. Reward for Mark Dawes. Alex Marshall is

:11:00.:11:27.

next. A tough match but he will be happy. Ranking points and that is

:11:28.:11:32.

exactly what you need to do. Also, he has had a match on the rink and

:11:33.:11:37.

that's important. He played well. Alex Marshall said to me yesterday,

:11:38.:11:42.

no nerves, he feels comfortable and he did what he had to do. Is that a

:11:43.:11:46.

fair way to describe this performance? Gary was coming off the

:11:47.:11:52.

weekend national championships and any question that Alex was being

:11:53.:11:57.

asked, he was able to answer and did it constantly. I felt he was not

:11:58.:12:03.

under the pressure that probably Mark Dawes will put him under

:12:04.:12:06.

because Gary was not really functioning until the second set and

:12:07.:12:10.

then he started to play well. Alex will move up a gear or two against

:12:11.:12:14.

Mark Dawes, I think there is no doubt about that, he knows he will

:12:15.:12:18.

have to and he will do that. The first trophy won this week by two

:12:19.:12:23.

guys who have been to the final before. Stuart Anderson and Darren

:12:24.:12:29.

Burnett, celebrating today. And they deserved, superb. Anderson, for the

:12:30.:12:36.

most part, winning the battle at the front end. Darren Burnett playing

:12:37.:12:42.

some fantastic bowls, really. You're looking at every single shot that he

:12:43.:12:47.

played, getting results but also, he was on the target area and that is

:12:48.:12:50.

important. When you are playing well, things go for you.

:12:51.:12:55.

Commiserations to Robbie and Colin who were beaten but they were up

:12:56.:13:01.

against good players today. Let's remind you of what is to come over

:13:02.:13:05.

the next couple of days. Tonight, highlights on BBC Two.

:13:06.:13:19.

And tomorrow, we run the red button from 10am. And we are back on BBC

:13:20.:13:27.

Two at 1pm for the final of the mixed pairs.

:13:28.:13:37.

That is just about it from the first day of Corbridge, the first of the

:13:38.:13:44.

four trophies won by two guys who were desperate to get their hands on

:13:45.:13:48.

it. Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett, the first to celebrate

:13:49.:13:52.

winning here. Join us for more action tomorrow. Until then,

:13:53.:13:53.

goodbye. MUSIC: (They Long To Be) Close To You
