what length and it was up to them. At this stage you go where the lead.

:00:33.:00:41.

Double and build from there. Exactly just give the lead a choice, it is

:00:42.:00:45.

the skip school sometimes, play were you fancy all way you will get balls

:00:46.:00:50.

close. I will adapt to the length you want to play.

:00:51.:01:34.

If you run a new ROK, keep coming a wee bit Julie. -- then you are OK.

:01:35.:01:48.

That is what he was looking for now. A point really to not worry about

:01:49.:01:54.

the jack, just beat the opponents bowl. Katherine has gone off

:01:55.:02:00.

slightly in the middle part of the set.

:02:01.:02:05.

APPLAUSE That was a better line. Run. Run for

:02:06.:02:25.

home here you have drawn the short. Run before you then. Very good. That

:02:26.:02:31.

is the key to it. APPLAUSE

:02:32.:02:40.

Gets your skipper not only in a happy mood that takes the pressure

:02:41.:02:44.

off. You don't want to be facing two down at the end. Relief therefore

:02:45.:02:46.

both players. This is close very close. Got its

:02:47.:03:09.

first time. A four shot lead is nice to have

:03:10.:03:28.

that should rather have it going into the last band rather than

:03:29.:03:29.

middle of the way through. If you can get that. If I get Alex

:03:30.:03:48.

solid is there enough room for him. Yes. Looks like a back runner for

:03:49.:03:56.

me. They will be attacking. Looks like a forehand runner, a jack in

:03:57.:04:00.

the ditch is a good result. Exactly, the best result probably. He has a

:04:01.:04:09.

chance there. He's got it. APPLAUSE

:04:10.:04:15.

The option available both ways. He was under the head however, gets a

:04:16.:04:25.

perfect result, lies three. A good example Andy, aim for the Jack and

:04:26.:04:28.

if you drift underneath you'll get something. A great example of a

:04:29.:04:35.

percentage shot. These Alex nothing but a draw. I would expect him to

:04:36.:04:41.

draw this one. The danger is no matter where he puts it Darren will

:04:42.:04:45.

be after it. Julie is not saying too much. It is the weight more than

:04:46.:04:52.

anything. He is not there. Not sure that is saving. Might possibly be

:04:53.:04:57.

two in it. Might even be three. However you would

:04:58.:05:19.

add the final bowl. However you would

:05:20.:05:33.

sure he is well out on the high line, only has to drop in to feed

:05:34.:05:38.

Jack high and he is good. This is scoring, it is just how many. A

:05:39.:05:48.

definite two and a luck after that. Three out. While, three out and a

:05:49.:05:56.

measure for the fourth. That is a massive turn around. Just shows the

:05:57.:06:09.

benefit of a good strike. Both officials needed for this. Just

:06:10.:06:18.

getting through to the bowl and they will check this one. I think it is

:06:19.:06:32.

only three. Bad enough I would say if you are Julie and Alex. Three

:06:33.:06:45.

shots Burnett and Rednall. He sorted that out pretty quickly. This jack

:06:46.:06:56.

on the last tee has not been a good tactic from Katherine and Darren.

:06:57.:07:54.

Great line again. Just dropped a bit away here. Very good. Easy in swing.

:07:55.:08:07.

Just once to gently come in. That will do. Was looking for the bowl to

:08:08.:08:12.

drop. Better. Better here Julie. Calling

:08:13.:08:34.

not to come up and it is. Good effort. Seven inches short I would

:08:35.:08:38.

say. Certainly looks better. Said it has

:08:39.:10:19.

to stop but he can pick the Jack up. Great position.

:10:20.:10:20.

APPLAUSE There we see the draw, added 15

:10:21.:10:33.

inches on his previous delivery. The ball falls in and he is happy. He

:10:34.:10:38.

has done a lot of damage, he really has a mismatch. The trouble is there

:10:39.:10:45.

is no hit shot here because no bowl on to bowl, who will be no better

:10:46.:10:52.

off because if he wings it, my goodness he could lose four. Nothing

:10:53.:10:54.

but a draw. Correct. Julie trying to give Alex

:10:55.:11:06.

encouragement here. You can draw this.

:11:07.:11:35.

He is on a nice looking track for it. Just needed a little bit more.

:11:36.:11:43.

Another foot would have been good enough.

:11:44.:11:54.

The score 8-8 after seven ends. That is for ends. Should be very tight

:11:55.:12:07.

the way this match is going. A couple of counts but having said

:12:08.:12:12.

that. Very good bowling, a lot of good convergence. You would expect

:12:13.:12:21.

that with two top-class skip. -- skips.

:12:22.:12:29.

Still on that line and run. A bit of both I think. Big yard.

:12:30.:13:03.

It's stopping quick. Clear as a bell. Still on track. Definitely

:13:04.:13:16.

further. Alex Iwobi sitting there saying you tell them. -- is probably

:13:17.:13:24.

sitting. Very good bowl from Katherine. Maybe a bit early for

:13:25.:13:31.

Alex actually, when the out of school. How far is that? Eight

:13:32.:13:39.

inches. You can still keep your hand Julie.

:13:40.:13:57.

Encouragement that the bowl was sitting just on the seem of the

:13:58.:14:53.

carpet. That is why it is sitting at a very strange angle. It certainly

:14:54.:15:00.

is, propped up well on the scene. A strange angle for a bowl to be on --

:15:01.:15:07.

seam. They have two digits somewhere -- stitch it somewhere but

:15:08.:15:12.

occasionally you get a boulder which sits on it. How far was Mac a foot.

:15:13.:15:26.

It was a big bit of carpet down there. I don't know how many

:15:27.:15:30.

sections that are on the green, I'm sure you could inform me, you know

:15:31.:15:34.

the technical small details. Usually five metres. Further. Further. Over

:15:35.:15:46.

the same. Yes. That is number three. Some very good draws. -- seam.

:15:47.:15:58.

Another question being asked again of Alex Marshall. Darren Burnett has

:15:59.:16:07.

been popping bowls in. A confidence Alex Marshall would have no trouble

:16:08.:16:12.

drawing the shot, maybe just not so happy today. Needs a big bowl today,

:16:13.:16:19.

cannot afford to drop three. I tell you what, no better man for it. I

:16:20.:16:21.

would agree with that. I think he said better. That is the

:16:22.:16:44.

problem, the weight wasn't too bad, he would have made second but didn't

:16:45.:16:49.

get past the front is one and it runs across TBN. -- to the end.

:16:50.:17:09.

The last three ends, 3-1- three from Darren.

:17:10.:17:40.

Great line you are through. Seven shots without reply, there has never

:17:41.:17:51.

been a game like that really, it always looked like a very tight

:17:52.:17:52.

game. Julie is very hard on herself at

:17:53.:18:10.

times, she really is. You get players like that critical of the

:18:11.:18:13.

performance with the do not put every ball on top of the Jack.

:18:14.:18:37.

Harriet Julie. -- Harry gets. I was going to say she would make this

:18:38.:18:46.

harder. To make it more difficult. Katherine has just stepped up a

:18:47.:19:22.

little bit, and the starting to win the battle, just when she needed to.

:19:23.:19:32.

Darren just keeps putting relentless shots into the head.

:19:33.:19:37.

Looks to be carrying some weight. Just wanted to make sure he was

:19:38.:20:01.

arriving. Just the ball kicked away a little bit so he was not on the

:20:02.:20:07.

draw line. Always a yard heavy, will change to the forehand side. I think

:20:08.:20:12.

Alex was playing the percentages there. Catch something and turn the

:20:13.:20:18.

Jack that he is in a lot of trouble if they lose the same. They really

:20:19.:20:24.

will be changing the match. Yu Delu I agree. -- chasing. That would be a

:20:25.:20:34.

tall order. A big bowl coming up from Alex. The cover bowl going into

:20:35.:20:49.

catch into the red one. No conversion shot available. This has

:20:50.:21:04.

to be the perfect draw. The line looks pretty good. Better. Needs to

:21:05.:21:08.

hurry. Will be short. Second bowl. That keeps Alex and Judy just in the

:21:09.:21:34.

final. A big run of shots, 3-1, 3-1 and when you lose two times in a row

:21:35.:21:40.

that is problematic. No one is moving in that crowd, and enjoyable

:21:41.:21:46.

final. A lot of people book a week here at Potters leisure resort where

:21:47.:21:52.

the World Championships are, the problem is they have the book it a

:21:53.:21:57.

year in van sometimes. The next few days are basically just full. -- in

:21:58.:22:06.

advanced -- in advance. Just powering through now, Julie needs a

:22:07.:22:16.

good start. If it heavy there. -- a bit.

:22:17.:22:22.

Almost kicked out into line. I tell you what, if she has the weight this

:22:23.:22:31.

will come back. I would be happy with that. Better off on the wider

:22:32.:22:36.

side than the inside let's put it that way. I agree the inside is

:22:37.:22:47.

always heavier. Katherine saying that awaits so Darren is very happy

:22:48.:22:49.

about it. This is very good. Perfect. She knew it which was

:22:50.:22:56.

equally as important. Try to draw to the ball on the side.

:22:57.:23:51.

The forehand drop for Darren Burnett here. -- draw.

:23:52.:24:21.

He set that up quite nicely. Alex has got to score at least a minimum

:24:22.:24:41.

of two. The bowl and the Jack the trickle of the danger away.

:24:42.:25:04.

Just touching it over might help, that may make a difference. Just the

:25:05.:25:16.

draw Darren. Happy with one down. Turn. That is good. Second prize,

:25:17.:25:38.

well done. Alex is trying to see what way it is

:25:39.:26:12.

possible to try and create another shot out of this and there is a

:26:13.:26:19.

backhand shot to push the bowl onto the green and edge it out of the

:26:20.:26:23.

head but that is tough. He is looking at the forehand draw to try

:26:24.:26:28.

and draw the perfect shot. Maybe score a double. However, whatever he

:26:29.:26:35.

plays it is very difficult. This is a low percentage. Very difficult.

:26:36.:26:47.

Well trying to play the forehand squeeze between his own red bowl and

:26:48.:26:51.

the green bowl. He has given that the real good go with this. Wrong

:26:52.:26:58.

side. Good effort. Three balls within a few inches of the Jack

:26:59.:27:07.

there and really it is just the one. A good measure for the game. Not

:27:08.:27:14.

even playing for the game. A little touch on the green. Our rings are

:27:15.:27:20.

right in You never get them when you need

:27:21.:28:02.

them, Andy. Rarely would you get them in the final end. They would

:28:03.:28:13.

really love to, and this one. They had to try something different in

:28:14.:28:20.

the final end. They may have gone a bit shorter. This will favour Darren

:28:21.:28:30.

and Katherine here. You always get the impression with a short jack

:28:31.:28:45.

length... Julie needs a good opener. Darren has only missed one in this

:28:46.:28:55.

match. That is about I guard down. -- about one yard down. Change onto

:28:56.:29:00.

the forehand, just have to beat that. Is it going to make it?

:29:01.:29:09.

Enough, though. Yes, you didn't think it was as good as that. I

:29:10.:29:16.

think Alex will know himself it is going to be very difficult now.

:29:17.:29:25.

Tighter, tighter, Julie. She cannot afford to be, if she misses the

:29:26.:29:31.

bowl. Yes, good bowl. APPLAUSE

:29:32.:29:45.

Ideally, keep your hand at two feet. Darren is not even worried about the

:29:46.:29:53.

shot. It will be difficulty for that to count, the short red bowl. this

:29:54.:29:59.

is good enough... i think darren is happy with that. -- difficult for

:30:00.:30:11.

that to count. this is impossible for alex, i don't know how he will

:30:12.:30:20.

get it. this looks impossible. He is shaking his head, he knows this is

:30:21.:30:32.

impossible. Looking for the two green bowls with the last delivery.

:30:33.:30:36.

He may try to gamble and take one out now, David. Yes, and if he

:30:37.:30:43.

misses it, they will be shaking hands. I think they are shaking

:30:44.:30:49.

hands now anyway. Yes. The agony. A tough ball. But they have been

:30:50.:30:57.

battling away there, Julie and Katherine, and Darren has played

:30:58.:31:00.

some superb draw shots, no doubt about that. That is what he might

:31:01.:31:05.

do. He has gone for the front one. Yes... Nothing you can do about it.

:31:06.:31:11.

You have been on the other side often enough. He certainly has.

:31:12.:31:15.

Shaking his head there. He knows it has just not been his day. That is

:31:16.:31:24.

what happens in sport. Sometimes you put in your performance and I think

:31:25.:31:27.

it is fair to say Darren and Katherine have been the better

:31:28.:31:37.

player. -- better pair. Having to lose a format here and I just cannot

:31:38.:31:51.

see Alex doing that. -- four here. Alex and Forrest might even just

:31:52.:31:56.

shake their hands here. If it is right in line, no way to get the

:31:57.:32:02.

three out. He doesn't want to group the bowls. Oh, dear, that means

:32:03.:32:15.

there is something wrong. It would be a remarkable shot... Well, I

:32:16.:32:26.

guess the deepest green bowl, if he just nicks that, follows through on

:32:27.:32:33.

pushes the next one in... -- and bushes. A bit of a chat here but I

:32:34.:32:41.

am wondering whether there is a chance of stunning the ball through.

:32:42.:32:52.

Exactly. The green ball goes out there, the other one goes out,

:32:53.:33:00.

brings the two front ones in. But it is hard. But there is a slight

:33:01.:33:04.

chance. It might only way to do it. He can afford to possibly get the

:33:05.:33:11.

quarter bold and then go right through for the green and it needs a

:33:12.:33:15.

lot of weight to get both of them out -- bowled. Then there is much

:33:16.:33:19.

answer of your own ball running away, though. -- there is more

:33:20.:33:27.

chance. He is thinking, do I really want to look at this?

:33:28.:33:31.

LAUGHTER He was going to lift the wrong bowl

:33:32.:33:37.

there, that is how much he is thinking about it! That broke the

:33:38.:33:47.

tension of it. He is still smiling. He knows it is a hard shot but he

:33:48.:33:50.

will have a bash and see what happens. Good, for controlled

:33:51.:33:59.

weight, looking for the front edge, the green one, and I tell you what

:34:00.:34:02.

comedy is very close to the front edge.

:34:03.:34:07.

APPLAUSE -- I tell you what, he is very

:34:08.:34:18.

close. To be fair, and they, the best pair won on the day and I think

:34:19.:34:25.

Julie and Alex will accept that. They just were not the better pair

:34:26.:34:32.

today but Darren Burnett, once again, two pairs titles,

:34:33.:34:36.

unbelievable performance. It was a good battle with Julie and Katherine

:34:37.:34:42.

and she came strong right towards the end, that lovely run, which just

:34:43.:34:47.

killed off the set. It certainly dead. Some great conversion balls

:34:48.:34:56.

from Darren, but a good final, and I deserve it pair. I really enjoyed

:34:57.:35:04.

it. -- deserved pair. A lovely entrance for the pairs, no doubt

:35:05.:35:08.

about that. The people who turned up to watch this final, great friends

:35:09.:35:15.

on the rink and their Alex just got a really bad result and you can see

:35:16.:35:18.

the results on that, but it was Darren doing a lot of damage with

:35:19.:35:22.

his balls, that was the first to go in front. Then Alex Marshall's last

:35:23.:35:34.

bowl, to keep it tight, 7-5. Then Darren Burnett once again drawing

:35:35.:35:42.

the perfect bowl, and we are into the first end of set two. Alex

:35:43.:35:48.

joining the last four four. And what a bowl that was, the shot of the

:35:49.:35:58.

match, for me. -- for four. Once again proving how good he can draw

:35:59.:36:04.

shots. Julie Forrest there, showing her progress in the second bowl

:36:05.:36:11.

draw. And it was Katherine who did a lot of damage in the second part of

:36:12.:36:14.

the second set, beautiful draw shots. And Alex, looking for the

:36:15.:36:21.

front edge of the green one, very close, but took his own bowl out. I

:36:22.:36:29.

think the statue will look a little one-sided in this match just with

:36:30.:36:34.

how things were chasing towards the end, 14-8. It looks very lopsided,

:36:35.:36:41.

that, but to be absolutely truthful, it was a much better game than that,

:36:42.:36:49.

it was a super final. But Darren Burnett and Katherine Rednall were

:36:50.:36:51.

just unbeatable today and they will take the Mixed Pairs Championship

:36:52.:37:06.

for 2016. Many players deflect the attention of mac each other but what

:37:07.:37:09.

I will do is ask you, Darren, how well you think Katherine played

:37:10.:37:14.

today? LAUGHTER

:37:15.:37:18.

She played very well. There were stages where she lost her weight a

:37:19.:37:22.

little and that is the sign of a true champion who can come back

:37:23.:37:25.

strong. It has been a delight to play with her and leading like that,

:37:26.:37:30.

I just had to tidy up behind. Katherine, your turn to tell me how

:37:31.:37:36.

well the man alongside you played? Lost the weight a little bit, yes,

:37:37.:37:40.

but Darren definitely made up for it, bowl to some cracking bowls to

:37:41.:37:49.

make up for it. On your way into Potters this year, what did you

:37:50.:37:52.

touch? LAUGHTER

:37:53.:37:54.

I don't know but I will keep touching it! It could have been a

:37:55.:37:57.

totally different set and we could have been out of it, to be perfectly

:37:58.:38:02.

honest. Even with one bowl to come, you could be the world and it can be

:38:03.:38:14.

magic. I am delighted. Katherine, you won you before. I asked about

:38:15.:38:17.

the difference winning with someone alongside you. What is that like?

:38:18.:38:28.

Mixed pairs, I love it, it is absolutely fantastic. And with

:38:29.:38:31.

Darren alongside me, I think it has been wonderful throughout the

:38:32.:38:34.

tournament. Some fabulous moments of bowls and the second end of the

:38:35.:38:42.

second set, very important? Yes, we were 4-0 down at the time and it was

:38:43.:38:51.

a different set completely, really. Quiet celebrations tonight? Yes,

:38:52.:39:01.

back to uni tomorrow, so yeah. Hope they give you a little leeway

:39:02.:39:09.

tomorrow. Your mixed pairs champions, Katherine Rednall and

:39:10.:39:11.

Darren Burnett! APPLAUSE

:39:12.:39:18.

Ladies and gentlemen it is now wages time and here to make the

:39:19.:39:21.

presentation is the Chief Executive and tournament director along with

:39:22.:39:26.

the director of customer services for retirement.

:39:27.:39:36.

APPLAUSE First, to our runners-up. To receive

:39:37.:39:41.

their runners up check, Julie Forrest and Alex Marshall, MBE!

:39:42.:39:51.

Now to the winners. Receiving a glass goblet each, a cheque and the

:39:52.:40:14.

title, it is Darren Burnett and Katherine Rednall!

:40:15.:40:14.

APPLAUSE Let's hear it for them one more

:40:15.:40:45.

time, ladies and gentlemen, the 2016 World Indoor Mixed Pairs champions,

:40:46.:40:58.

Katherine Rednall and Darren Burnett!

:40:59.:41:03.

APPLAUSE STUDIO:

:41:04.:41:08.

As you heard from Darren in the post match interview, his chances of

:41:09.:41:11.

winning all three trophies here he is eligible for a still very much

:41:12.:41:16.

alive and it is the men's singles we will because treading on now. Let's

:41:17.:41:20.

show you how things are shaping up. This was the end of play last night

:41:21.:41:30.

-- we will be focusing on. Alex Marshall up against Mark Dawes and

:41:31.:41:34.

Alex is of course one of six former champions still left in the last 16

:41:35.:41:45.

of the men's singles. Anderson takes on Mervyn King. Jonathan Ross and

:41:46.:41:51.

David Gourlay and Darren Burnett, the former champion, takes on

:41:52.:41:58.

another in Greg Harlow. But we are concentrating on the match this

:41:59.:42:02.

afternoon between David Gourlay and Jonathan Ross. David Gourlay, 49,

:42:03.:42:07.

has had the most wonderful career so far. He masterminded Scotland's

:42:08.:42:10.

success in the Commonwealth Games a couple of years ago and he won this

:42:11.:42:16.

title in 1986 in Preston and he is trying to make history repeat itself

:42:17.:42:26.

once more. -- 1996. I cannot believe it is 20 years ago since I won this

:42:27.:42:33.

title. I can remember it as if it was yesterday and it is ridiculous

:42:34.:42:37.

where the years have gone. There have been a few semifinals and a

:42:38.:42:41.

final appearance, a lot of first-round exits as well so I am

:42:42.:42:44.

just pleased to get past the first round this year. A great way to

:42:45.:42:50.

spend January, you know, every year, and the competition is heating up

:42:51.:42:54.

now. It is just great to be involved in it. I think this is probably the

:42:55.:43:02.

18th year in a row of coming to Potters, a great venue. World

:43:03.:43:07.

Championships, the best venue in the world. I live in a coastal town

:43:08.:43:12.

which is about half an hour south of Barcelona in Catalonia. For me it is

:43:13.:43:22.

about an eight I've drive so I have been to lots of bowling greens in

:43:23.:43:25.

Spain but at the moment I don't think I play as much as I used to.

:43:26.:43:29.

This is probably my second or third singles game in ten months, so

:43:30.:43:35.

probably not the best preparation, but I came a couple of days earlier

:43:36.:43:40.

than everyone else and put time into the practice so whilst I am probably

:43:41.:43:42.

not the most confident I have ever been I played well in my first game

:43:43.:43:46.

and am looking forward to today. I probably played my best bowls from

:43:47.:43:54.

about 28 to my early 40s, to be honest. I cannot explain that. I can

:43:55.:43:59.

still go out and on any given day play as well as I did then but I

:44:00.:44:02.

think I was probably more consistent then and perhaps I am a little more

:44:03.:44:08.

hesitant now and more, you know, safety conscious, than I was then.

:44:09.:44:12.

Bowls is all about delivery and as you get older you perhaps just lose

:44:13.:44:17.

the bowl, lose a delivery, just don't deliver the same and you need

:44:18.:44:20.

to be consistent every single time and as you get older I think that

:44:21.:44:24.

goes slightly. That is where the flaws start appearing in your game.

:44:25.:44:30.

It is difficult to put a sort of timespan on when you think it is

:44:31.:44:33.

time to call it a day. I do not think I've reached that stage yet

:44:34.:44:37.

but, you know, I think if I drop out the club 16 then I would find it

:44:38.:44:42.

very difficult to qualify back in so that maybe the time, but who knows,

:44:43.:44:47.

you know. As long as I am in the top 16 and can compete and I'm not

:44:48.:44:53.

making a fool of myself I am quite happy. My ambition would be to win

:44:54.:44:57.

this title just once more but it is getting increasingly difficult every

:44:58.:45:02.

year. The standard is getting higher and I am not competing as much as I

:45:03.:45:05.

did and probably the sort of drive and incentive is not there as highly

:45:06.:45:12.

as it used to be, so one more crack at this and one more title would be

:45:13.:45:17.

nice. A wonderful record David Gourlay has compiled over the years

:45:18.:45:22.

but he faces quite a tough test today, against a class player, no

:45:23.:45:28.

doubt, in Jonathan Ross. 42 and represents Scotland and he has been

:45:29.:45:32.

amongst the top 16 for 15 years or more, seeded 11. He has got to the

:45:33.:45:37.

quarterfinals five times and elsewhere he has won gold in

:45:38.:45:44.

championships as well, and he is someone who could provide a bit of a

:45:45.:45:53.

difficult day for David Gourlay. I have always been the quarterfinal

:45:54.:45:56.

man, that is what they keep calling me. I have been beaten quite a lot

:45:57.:46:01.

of times in tie-breaks and quarterfinals. This is the biggest

:46:02.:46:07.

tournament we have, the world WBT. The ground, the atmosphere, it is

:46:08.:46:12.

what you want, a good crowd around you. All of the players really want

:46:13.:46:17.

to get to this. You need a little bit of nerves before every game but

:46:18.:46:20.

I have been here for a long time so I am used to the format and the

:46:21.:46:24.

setup. David is one of the all-time greats and in recent times he has

:46:25.:46:28.

done everything. In the indoor circuit, and he did well for

:46:29.:46:33.

Scotland in the Commonwealth. So it will be tough, obviously, but he is

:46:34.:46:38.

not playing as much now, being based in Spain, so I am not sure how match

:46:39.:46:46.

fit he is, so we will see how it goes Corky has left the factory of

:46:47.:46:49.

the commentary box to come and chat with me. I think he has been in the

:46:50.:46:54.

top 16 for 16 years and he is one of those players who turns up and

:46:55.:46:57.

always firms, very consistent. He has not gone all the way here but

:46:58.:47:01.

you know if you are in the early rounds against him it will be tough.

:47:02.:47:07.

Absolutely. Jonathan has been there since 98, would you believe? In the

:47:08.:47:11.

first couple of years he got enough points and he has now been sitting

:47:12.:47:14.

there for the last 16 years and has not been passed a semifinal. He only

:47:15.:47:19.

made it to a semifinal on two occasion so you have to ask when it

:47:20.:47:22.

will happen. He is more than good enough. What about David Gourlay? As

:47:23.:47:27.

I mentioned before we heard from him, he has been one of the most

:47:28.:47:31.

wonderful players to watch over the years but he also spends his time at

:47:32.:47:35.

helping people, coaching, and he did a great job with Scotland in the

:47:36.:47:40.

Commonwealth Games. Yes, he sold his business and took on a paid role so

:47:41.:47:44.

he had that. One of the best in the world to work with, and he delivered

:47:45.:47:47.

and that is what really counts. The thing about him is six times he has

:47:48.:47:53.

been world number one, won the World Championship 20 years ago. He has

:47:54.:48:00.

been in numerous other finals. Did you play against him? In 96,

:48:01.:48:07.

probably, yes. Yes, and many times myself, but to be truthful, he is a

:48:08.:48:10.

consummate professional, he really is. How do you see this one going

:48:11.:48:15.

today? A lot of people will expect David to come out top but I think it

:48:16.:48:21.

will be tight, personally. It should be. It depends on Jonathan's first

:48:22.:48:28.

two balls. If he gets in it will be a really tight game but if David

:48:29.:48:32.

Gourlay beat him with that, Jonathan Ross's running balls, it is not his

:48:33.:48:37.

game, let's put it that way. Although he can play them very well

:48:38.:48:42.

as the top players can, David's are generally more effective than most.

:48:43.:48:47.

On the success of Darren Burnett and Katherine Rednall, Darren is clearly

:48:48.:48:51.

in wonderful form, and he said how much he looked forward to playing

:48:52.:48:55.

with Katherine this week and it seemed to manifest itself, that joy,

:48:56.:49:00.

it in the ring? I think most people will have been happy to play with

:49:01.:49:06.

Katherine Rednall, because you know you will get, good bowling, and also

:49:07.:49:09.

she is a very calm player. Her and Julie had a decent battle but in the

:49:10.:49:13.

second half of the second set, Katherine really put the fit to the

:49:14.:49:18.

metal and that helped, but Darren was absolutely brilliant. He left

:49:19.:49:22.

Alex on a number of occasions with virtually no shot to play. Darren

:49:23.:49:27.

now has the chance to do what no other player has done here at

:49:28.:49:32.

Potters, the triple Crown, winning the Mixed Pairs, the Pairs, and the

:49:33.:49:40.

Singles title. You think he can do it? Good, he's playing confidently

:49:41.:49:44.

and also he is playing almost every day, which is critical. He doesn't

:49:45.:49:48.

have to worry about practising much because he is getting good, solid

:49:49.:49:53.

matchplay. He is up against Greg in the next match and I think that will

:49:54.:49:58.

be tough. Greg is based here and knows this rink inside out and has

:49:59.:50:01.

the time to practice but, again, he has not had the matchplay for a

:50:02.:50:10.

week. Last year, Robert Paxton's turn, this year, Darren Burnett. Can

:50:11.:50:14.

he do it? Very much so, I think. We will now test Corky's sprinting

:50:15.:50:23.

skills as he tries to make it up to the commentary box in time. Now over

:50:24.:50:29.

to your commentator. Ladies and gentlemen, it is the Irish ace,

:50:30.:50:31.

Jonathan Ross! MUSIC: Don't Stop Me Now

:50:32.:51:06.

by Queen We look forward to an exciting

:51:07.:51:32.

encounter. Don't forget if you have any questions for the team you can

:51:33.:51:39.

send us your Tweets. We will head back to the commentary box, where

:51:40.:51:43.

fortunately Corky has made it back up their in time. And not even out

:51:44.:51:52.

of breath! Hasn't seen a match for so many years and now playing out

:51:53.:51:55.

Scotland, as he has done for half dozen years. Quiet, please, thank

:51:56.:52:09.

you. That is really the key to Jonathan Ross, how he gets in with

:52:10.:52:16.

those first two bowls. 100%, David. You do not want to be forcing your

:52:17.:52:23.

way out of trouble. He is very capable of beating him. Three

:52:24.:52:34.

inches. Well, David Gourlay. He has been around for so long now. But

:52:35.:52:40.

still manages to be very professional in his preparation,

:52:41.:52:42.

does as much as he can. He lives out of Spain, where he is living now,

:52:43.:52:48.

but having said that he puts that I was in. When he gets to events, but

:52:49.:53:02.

definitely a bit rusty in matchplay -- puts the hours in. Playing on the

:53:03.:53:09.

carpet, because of he is living now. It is hard to be sympathetic,

:53:10.:53:14.

though! Walking on the beach twice a day with his little dog. Yes, a hard

:53:15.:53:24.

life for some. He enjoys his red wine, enjoy the sunshine. Stop

:53:25.:53:31.

making me jealous! He says at night it gets cold, but during the day it

:53:32.:53:35.

is still always lovely, even at this time of year. David played well in

:53:36.:53:42.

his opening game, against Smith, he did really well. Yes, GR Smith, as

:53:43.:53:56.

we call him, because there are two or three Gary Smiths around the

:53:57.:54:00.

bowling world, so he is always referred to as GR. Jonathan can play

:54:01.:54:10.

this short and he is very good at it, but everyone coming to this sort

:54:11.:54:16.

of level, you really don't want to be sucked into playing all of the

:54:17.:54:22.

weight shots because that can affect a draw and that is where he really

:54:23.:54:30.

wants to concentrate, the drop shot. He had a quick look, and back again.

:54:31.:54:42.

-- draw shot. Sticking to his forehand, resting the backhand,

:54:43.:54:52.

playing the green ball. They have stopped the clock. Something going

:54:53.:54:56.

on in terms of a little disturbance. Of course the crowd will always go

:54:57.:54:59.

out after a major final, then they will want to come in again. Yes,

:55:00.:55:09.

they have wandered off for comfort break, so the jacket and phone been

:55:10.:55:15.

removed! MOBILE PHONE RINGS Just a bit

:55:16.:55:22.

unsettling... It has not put him off too much, if

:55:23.:55:38.

he catches the bowl. I think he was giving that a little extra, the

:55:39.:55:44.

chance of getting the jack. Just a draw for David here, one down.

:55:45.:56:06.

Is on a good line, all about weight. Great try. Just dropped away, but it

:56:07.:56:20.

might be the shot. Perfect lie, ball in, just... Good stuff.

:56:21.:56:32.

David Gourlay had a stint in Australia a few years ago and played

:56:33.:56:44.

over there. He came back to Scotland for a short period, then decided to

:56:45.:56:51.

stay when he took on the coaching job for Bowls Scotland, Then He

:56:52.:56:56.

Languished That After The Commonwealth Games And Bowls

:56:57.:57:05.

Scotland Probably Advertised, I Suppose, and he got it. He is doing

:57:06.:57:12.

a good job so far, John, getting his team through to the World

:57:13.:57:17.

Championships. So he should, he has Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, Darren

:57:18.:57:23.

Burnett, Neil Spiers, stripped and. A hard job, eh? Being the Scottish

:57:24.:57:38.

manager. Exactly! He will do a good job anyway. He will. Highly

:57:39.:57:48.

respected, a good appointment. Just running through a

:57:49.:58:06.

APPLAUSE It looks better all the way.

:58:07.:58:25.

Both these players using Taylor bowls. A good choice. I thought you

:58:26.:58:40.

might say that. I should let people know that Andy actually works for

:58:41.:58:44.

the company. The two players don't but they are associated with that

:58:45.:58:50.

bowls' company as a number of bowlers are, in different companies.

:58:51.:58:59.

He would normally draw this, because of the gaps involved.

:59:00.:59:16.

Shot bowl coming in. Still good. I don't know whether there is one or

:59:17.:59:32.

two in it. If it is two, he is very unlucky. UMPIRE: MEASURE FOR SHOT.

:59:33.:59:42.

He will be happy with that. Jonathan has a choice here. He can go down

:59:43.:59:50.

the forehand or keep the draw down the back. That's what he is playing.

:59:51.:00:06.

Nice weight if he had made the gap to pull the jack back for three.

:00:07.:00:18.

David doesn't measure unless he thinks he is in with a chance. It is

:00:19.:00:23.

funny how you know players. Jonathan doesn't have a clue about measures.

:00:24.:00:28.

He is right up there with you, Andy. Yes, quite right, too. It has been

:00:29.:00:31.

the same with Jonathan. Openly admits it. A lovely grip on those

:00:32.:00:43.

bowls. I don't want to make this a sales pitch, but they are not

:00:44.:00:47.

available, actually. Special order? Special order, only. Top players

:00:48.:00:50.

only. Jonathan is using an old-style solid

:00:51.:01:07.

Taylor ace, by the looks of them. David, that one looks like an old

:01:08.:01:11.

international style of bowl. It is in fact, it is international. I was

:01:12.:01:15.

going to say, David doesn't measure things unless he thinks he is in

:01:16.:01:18.

with a chance. He has a good eye. St You see the crowd has depleted a

:01:19.:01:41.

little bit after the final. A few comfort breaks going on. They will

:01:42.:01:48.

filter back in again. That's understandable, after an exciting

:01:49.:01:51.

final of two hours in the mixed. You would want a little break. You can

:01:52.:01:58.

understand it. It certainly is a little upsetting for the players

:01:59.:02:02.

when they keep wandering back but most players can adapt.

:02:03.:02:14.

Most players know, especially of this experience. Well, that's not a

:02:15.:02:25.

good opener. Let's look at the bowls. I haven't seen an

:02:26.:02:26.

international for a while. Many manufacturers produce a very

:02:27.:02:41.

big, bending bowl. Well, that's just under the line, will get punished

:02:42.:02:47.

there. Missed the line but probably by just a bowl's width but he will

:02:48.:02:53.

get hammered at the other end. They take pride in their XP, which is a

:02:54.:02:59.

good swinging bowl and Aero and sonic, a lot of people use the

:03:00.:03:04.

groove but sonic is the drawing bowl, like an old traditional Tiger,

:03:05.:03:09.

which is a lovely medium-to-strong biassed bowl.

:03:10.:03:23.

A better line this time. He needs to carry the weight, though. He is

:03:24.:03:34.

under pressure now. UMPIRE: Two green.

:03:35.:03:42.

Surely that's not going to hold. No, he got away with that one. I don't

:03:43.:03:51.

think he has the weight. He probably would have got away with it if wandy

:03:52.:03:57.

was another couple of feet. This will change Jonny on to the

:03:58.:03:58.

backhand. Just a backhand draw. Again, under. Well under. The short

:03:59.:04:15.

length is a very dangerous length, no doubt. Most players are happy

:04:16.:04:19.

going to the T because they can get a nice draw and into the delivery. I

:04:20.:04:24.

think David is quite right, this is more of a testing length.

:04:25.:04:27.

There are holes and gaps, doesn't want to fill the gap between the

:04:28.:04:34.

whole and the outside bowl. No choice now. It looks great down the

:04:35.:04:44.

forehand. He will drive at this. Well, in Jonnies case not a heavy

:04:45.:04:49.

drive, a controlled weight I don't know if it is just a draw. Of course

:04:50.:04:53.

audience coming in. That has upset Jonny. The steward should be

:04:54.:04:57.

controlling this a little bit. I think that's the problem. Not

:04:58.:05:00.

looking to see the player on the mat. There we go. They've sorted

:05:01.:05:07.

themselves out. This is an important bowl.

:05:08.:05:16.

He stuck to the draw. . It was brave. I thought he would have a go

:05:17.:05:26.

at this. Oh, well-played Jonathan Ross. A very good bowl. He played to

:05:27.:05:32.

his strength. I tell you what, not many players would have drawn in for

:05:33.:05:36.

the second. They would have had a go at that. They would have done.

:05:37.:05:39.

Well-played Jonathan Ross. Measure for the shot according to that? No,

:05:40.:05:46.

happy enough. It must have been there if Jonny pushed it out. He

:05:47.:05:50.

always knows. I tease him about it. We played against each other enough

:05:51.:05:54.

over the years to be able to do that. It's strengths and weaknesses.

:05:55.:05:59.

Jonny's strength is playing the game. Which he is very good at.

:06:00.:06:06.

I think it is a testament, actually to Jonathan's lob jeft as well

:06:07.:06:13.

because he rarely loses in the first round. You are right. You are right.

:06:14.:06:23.

- longevity. That's what he needs to do. The

:06:24.:06:29.

ranking system is set up that provided you win every first rounded

:06:30.:06:32.

gym, you will always be in the top 16. That's what happened.

:06:33.:06:39.

He hasn't been in many semifinals. Yes he makes a lot of quarters which

:06:40.:06:47.

builds up the ranking points which he is more than happy with but

:06:48.:06:52.

secretly he would love to get to the WBT final. I'm sure he would. With

:06:53.:06:55.

the length of career he has had. Also, a lot of players don't win the

:06:56.:07:05.

world title, talented players as well. UMPIRE: Short of jack high.

:07:06.:07:13.

Not all players are very successful. Jonny would settle for one of the

:07:14.:07:19.

majors. I'm sure he would. He will settle forral world title here this

:07:20.:07:20.

week. Well-played Jonathan. Again, on the

:07:21.:07:32.

draw. Well, Jonathan playing exactly the

:07:33.:08:32.

same bowl. He has to be a bit careful. He could easily give the

:08:33.:08:34.

shot away here. Well, I think we can understand

:08:35.:09:02.

that, David. Yes. Certainly not a time to leave a shoulder for David

:09:03.:09:05.

gower lay to play through. I don't think he has much chance but to draw

:09:06.:09:10.

this, the way it is sitting. I think that's all that is on. -- Gourlay.

:09:11.:09:24.

There is something not right with this. Jonathan has gone down to play

:09:25.:09:30.

this bowl. I think he is wasting his time. I think I'd take the one. You

:09:31.:09:35.

could always play the backhand and play it safe and hope to just skim

:09:36.:09:40.

the short one. I wouldn't be surprised if this is not too close.

:09:41.:10:06.

Airing on the short side but a good effort. And we are back to nine-end

:10:07.:10:14.

sets for the singles, the second round. Two sets of nine ends with a

:10:15.:10:19.

three-end tie breaks as per normal. Mat up, short jack and the lines

:10:20.:10:57.

will change. Safe enough on the forehand on that width. A good

:10:58.:10:59.

starter. Slightly higher. It is to be under

:11:00.:12:16.

again, I think. Those bowls are kicking in. As we said, a biassed

:12:17.:12:18.

bowl. Jonathan playing the double

:12:19.:12:39.

opportunity shot. A shot and get covered at the same time. Dropping

:12:40.:12:43.

in short. He might make the two. Three, wow. David normally - well,

:12:44.:12:51.

he normally plays this with a forehand runner but a front plant

:12:52.:12:56.

will do damage. Two gone. No reaction from the crowd.

:12:57.:13:04.

It was a good strike. Took two bowls out. A perfect strike. Reduces the

:13:05.:13:15.

count to one. There is the other one spinning away. It also offers up an

:13:16.:13:19.

opportunity for David if Jonathan doesn't get in with this one.

:13:20.:13:31.

Nice line. Well, that struggled to get back. I thought it was better

:13:32.:13:41.

than that. So did I. Goodness me, that did struggle and locked a bowl

:13:42.:13:45.

in as well. David Gourlay may be tempted just to have another little

:13:46.:13:47.

pop at this. Back to the draw. It is not easy the

:13:48.:14:03.

way the red bowl is sitting. Diving away. Happy with one down.

:14:04.:14:11.

UMPIRE: One shot, Jonathan Ross. Well again, down to Jonathan's

:14:12.:14:13.

drawing ability. He got that first one in. Popped another couple in

:14:14.:14:22.

after it to force David into the running bowl. Really, if he can do

:14:23.:14:26.

that, he has a good chance of winning this match.

:14:27.:14:36.

There's only five between these two players in the ranking list.

:14:37.:14:42.

Jonathan, a good finish to the season last year. Popped up to

:14:43.:14:48.

Number 11. APPLAUSE

:14:49.:15:00.

Once again a great opener. David Gourlay has been world number

:15:01.:15:42.

one six times since he won the World Championships in '96. It's been a

:15:43.:15:46.

while since he won a singles event As you said, he has had other

:15:47.:15:52.

commitments. He perhaps has not as much time in on the green as other

:15:53.:15:57.

players do. Managing Scotland and now out in Spain. I think it becomes

:15:58.:16:03.

harder. Well, he is having that life balance, isn't he? Yes, his choice.

:16:04.:16:08.

Jonathan, the best he has been in 2011. You wond -- that was number

:16:09.:16:17.

nine. You wonder why when you see him playing like this. I don't think

:16:18.:16:23.

players are surprised to see him putting bowl close to the jack. It's

:16:24.:16:26.

his strength. It's just when the head is going in the reverse for

:16:27.:16:31.

Jonathan, trying to retrieve the shots, where he finds the greatest

:16:32.:16:32.

difficulty, I think. He can draw all day and give you a

:16:33.:16:36.

hard time. Ye, just putting four bowls within

:16:37.:16:45.

six inches. It looks like number 3 coming in.

:16:46.:17:09.

This is the danger with Jonathan, he will pop away there, draw, draw,

:17:10.:17:13.

draw. The only way to stop that is to force him into playing width

:17:14.:17:17.

shots but you have to beat him to the jack first. As you can see on

:17:18.:17:21.

the screen here, David's opening delivery, about four feet shot,

:17:22.:17:26.

that's creating the problem here. I think he would be running at this.

:17:27.:17:31.

Well two options, he has that forehand runner again to take the

:17:32.:17:34.

two bowls out and that will take that bowl out that way and miss the

:17:35.:17:38.

jack with that. It is not coming coming on to the jack. The

:17:39.:17:43.

alternative is to draw on the backhand and try and drop something

:17:44.:17:47.

in behind the jack, if he can. The way he is looking at this, I think

:17:48.:17:52.

he favours the runner, however, the short bowl is slightly putting him

:17:53.:17:56.

off. He can restrict the damage by taking two out. He did that in the

:17:57.:18:00.

previous end. He was three down and took two bowls out.

:18:01.:18:09.

Oh, he is way under with this one. Well, he is not the first to miss a

:18:10.:18:16.

line on the forehand and certainly won't be the last. No, a difficult

:18:17.:18:24.

timing shot. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if Jonathan just adds

:18:25.:18:30.

another. David would be four down then. A a bit of difficulty there.

:18:31.:18:40.

That front plant is not coming on to the jack. Jonathan will want another

:18:41.:18:45.

one close to the jack. So if two are removed, he at least scores a

:18:46.:18:46.

double. A shade out with that one. Well, he

:18:47.:19:00.

will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he played it there.

:19:01.:19:04.

Looks like David is changing to the draw. Not easy after the running

:19:05.:19:11.

bowl. I thought he would have kept with it, try and take two out and

:19:12.:19:13.

lose a single. He is having a look here. I think he

:19:14.:19:33.

is drawing the shot. Oh, David, what a bowl. Great bowl. That is special.

:19:34.:19:40.

It really is. Fantastic bowl, after the runner. Brilliant, under that

:19:41.:19:57.

sort of pressure. It's been ones all the way but some great draw shots in

:19:58.:20:02.

there. David has been in trouble a few times here. He needs to get

:20:03.:20:05.

first two bowls going. Snr

:20:06.:20:30.

APPLAUSE Judy Potter. Floral today in the

:20:31.:20:48.

jacket. Very colourful. And looking forward to the clotted cream and

:20:49.:20:57.

cerise to arrive, andy, I'm sure it will before the end of the week.

:20:58.:21:03.

Some colours. Does she give you a list of colours before she comes

:21:04.:21:09.

out? I have been reliably informed when the jackets come into the

:21:10.:21:13.

centre, they are brought in by two men in a rack and pushed, not

:21:14.:21:19.

carried. There's that many of them. She looks nice every day.

:21:20.:21:28.

Well-dressed. Very smart. Always, Judy, always. Loves her

:21:29.:21:30.

bowls Well, Jonathan sticking to the draw.

:21:31.:21:53.

Perfect line. UMPIRE: One green. David moving on to the forehand on

:21:54.:21:57.

this. It is quite an accommodating hand, but he has been dipping under.

:21:58.:22:02.

He needs to push the bowls out a bit wider. He is under with this one.

:22:03.:22:07.

Just missing his line there. I think he can afford to take another foot

:22:08.:22:11.

wider. Those bowls are definitely going to come back. I would agree,

:22:12.:22:17.

David. Better than being on the high side.

:22:18.:22:24.

# Awkward this one, for Jonathan. His short bowl is giving him

:22:25.:22:26.

problems. His first weight shot. And he is in

:22:27.:22:40.

the area. Very close, bowl-on-bowl. Does he have the edge? Well, he was

:22:41.:22:45.

really right down that, Andy. Nice weight for it, too. The hard weight.

:22:46.:22:51.

Once again, it was the shot bowl that deflected him away. He had a

:22:52.:22:56.

target. He was right in the meat of the head.

:22:57.:23:09.

David still trying to draw the winner.

:23:10.:23:21.

Only just over. Jonathan only has one bowl in the head. However, I

:23:22.:23:28.

think it will be very lucky to take it away if he plays a similar type

:23:29.:23:31.

of bowl on the backhand. He is under this time. He didn't get

:23:32.:23:52.

into the delivery. It didn't look like he pushed right through it.

:23:53.:24:03.

UMPIRE: One shot, David Gourlay. Set score is 2-5 after seven ends.

:24:04.:24:09.

Well, still more people coming back. They probably will do for the next

:24:10.:24:15.

half an hour. We are moving towards the second set. 5-2. Still the

:24:16.:24:20.

singles there. It gives an indication of how tough a game this

:24:21.:24:32.

is. The theme continues and David Gourlay will take it, if it is two

:24:33.:24:40.

more singles. David will be looking to score a double here to close this

:24:41.:24:44.

set down. This is a shorter length. Changed the tactics. I think that's

:24:45.:24:48.

a good move actually. He needs to hurry with this one. It looks a bit

:24:49.:24:50.

short. The trouble with something like that

:24:51.:25:03.

is, it can get in a way on a short jack length, in particular. And

:25:04.:25:06.

Jonathan could put three or four inside it.

:25:07.:25:11.

It is all about good weight this one.

:25:12.:25:35.

It looks better. Quite interesting what David did there. He moved

:25:36.:25:43.

across on the mat and pushed it out a bit wider. Fair enough. I actually

:25:44.:25:48.

had a quhat with David about the best place for the jack. I won't

:25:49.:25:54.

reveal too much, but I do think he is better off the T. Phone for the

:25:55.:25:58.

fact he has the big-swinging bowls. You are guaranteed to come back. He

:25:59.:26:02.

doesn't have to go searching for tight lines. Which is what Jonathan

:26:03.:26:07.

has done there. Exactly. Now, it is so easy to miss that. The margin of

:26:08.:26:12.

error is minimal. He is probably just a bowl tight and it just whips

:26:13.:26:15.

across. Well, let's see how the weight is

:26:16.:26:29.

first, the line is decent. Very good. He is absolutely guaranteeing

:26:30.:26:36.

to come back centre ring. A better length for David this.

:26:37.:26:44.

Well, I don't think Jonathan will even attempt to draw this. It would

:26:45.:26:50.

be radio great bowl if he did. Well, there is a bit of room to be fair.

:26:51.:26:55.

About four or five inches. He could just draw it. At least make it a

:26:56.:26:59.

little bit better for himself. Most players would be striking at this.

:27:00.:27:00.

He is going for the runner. Not far away but always high. Notice

:27:01.:27:19.

his delivery there at the end of the extension? He tends to pull the

:27:20.:27:22.

final part of the delivery action. He tends to go across the body a

:27:23.:27:27.

bit. But anyway, David Gourlay lying set, so Jonathan is in a bit of

:27:28.:27:32.

trouble here. He might decide to go deep in this I think he is, he is

:27:33.:27:36.

covering the T which covers both spots.

:27:37.:27:45.

I think Jonathan should go again. There is a chance the jack might

:27:46.:27:56.

bounce forward. Is three down, so difficult even to draw the short. No

:27:57.:27:59.

difficulty here if he calls for it again. He has gone for the draw.

:28:00.:28:08.

Well, that is not easy. -- the shot. Very close. It might be second... I

:28:09.:28:23.

don't think Very close. It might be second... I

:28:24.:28:34.

having a look. I tell you what, that will be close, if David is measuring

:28:35.:28:35.

it. Get the umpire out to have a look at

:28:36.:28:57.

it, Sandra McLeish. They need, I think, another one of the chalks to

:28:58.:29:04.

hold that up because as soon as you touch the green ball, the red is

:29:05.:29:10.

moving. Just pop that in there. Absolutely rock-solid no. Yes, just

:29:11.:29:18.

the one. -- now. Good old by Jonathan. It keeps the set going. --

:29:19.:29:37.

good bowl by Jonathan. The trouble with the drive is that even if you

:29:38.:29:41.

hit the target you are not guaranteed scoring the shot, so he

:29:42.:29:53.

probably chose the right shot. Well, Jonathan Ross needs a four to tie

:29:54.:29:54.

the set. That is pretty good. Jonathan has no

:29:55.:31:01.

choice but to just keep drawing on this, trying to develop an

:31:02.:31:07.

opportunity with his last bowl. He has tried to move it with this bowl

:31:08.:31:14.

so if this was off the green, the set would finish. But if it doesn't.

:31:15.:31:23.

It has gone. Maybe just pop another one in, or go deeper. He doesn't

:31:24.:31:28.

need to worry too much about where he is popping one in, just

:31:29.:31:35.

delivering it and walking back. I think he would be wise to think

:31:36.:31:40.

about this now. If he has the jack at the next end. Practising a little

:31:41.:31:51.

runner. Just going to get the edge, maybe. Yes... That bowl has now

:31:52.:32:08.

gone. Would even play the last three bowls. Not many sets go through in

:32:09.:32:12.

singles. I think David Gourlay was good value for that although, having

:32:13.:32:17.

said that, he played a couple of big bowls. He did. A couple of times,

:32:18.:32:23.

David reduce the current so I don't think there was much between them.

:32:24.:32:27.

David was maybe slightly more consistent. -- reduced the count. We

:32:28.:32:46.

are available on Twitter, hashtag bbcbowls. I think we will just

:32:47.:32:50.

gather all the questions together then get Andy in a darkroom so he

:32:51.:32:54.

can do a question and answer session. Will you be in that

:32:55.:33:00.

darkroom with me? Only behind the light! I will have the light on to

:33:01.:33:05.

make sure you feel comfortable. I will need you to help me with the

:33:06.:33:11.

awkward ones. We have had a question earlier today as well about the

:33:12.:33:18.

distance of the bowl. The minimum distance of the bowl, and it travels

:33:19.:33:26.

-- it has the travel, which is 40 metres. The minimum age act-mac has

:33:27.:33:35.

the goal is 23. -- 14 metres. Sometimes the jack comes forward. It

:33:36.:33:40.

does. And that can be too short for it.

:33:41.:33:53.

-- minimum a jack has to go. That is why I need you in that darkroom! I

:33:54.:34:01.

will have to polish off my power's badgers, somewhere in the attic, I

:34:02.:34:16.

think they are -- my umpire's badges. Great start to this set, two

:34:17.:34:30.

great bowls. Second bowl, David, just the draw. With his all, this

:34:31.:34:35.

will be a decent drawing hand, to push them out, let the bias bring

:34:36.:34:42.

the bowl back in, just like that. Perfect. I think that is the shot.

:34:43.:34:53.

It would have been better... It fell in, however not quite sure if it

:34:54.:35:00.

stayed in the area. He may still have it. He really wanted to look

:35:01.:35:06.

solid on the bowl. It would have been completely jammed in there.

:35:07.:35:21.

Once again, he is close. It would be good... Great.

:35:22.:35:55.

APPLAUSE Once you get the edge of the jack,

:35:56.:36:02.

it straightens almost onto the red bowl. Just watch it. Just

:36:03.:36:10.

straightening onto it. That gave him the red bowl out, a minimum ofs,

:36:11.:36:16.

possibly three. I thought it was close. -- a minimum ofs, possibly

:36:17.:36:25.

three. This will be hard. Going for the forehand runner. That little

:36:26.:36:28.

flick at the end and you can see that with his delivery. Just pulling

:36:29.:36:39.

the bowl when he does that. Right through the line. If you look at

:36:40.:36:45.

people like Greg Harlow, they follow through the delivery but Jonathan

:36:46.:36:48.

tends to stop almost halfway through and does not get into the shot.

:36:49.:37:10.

Sometimes you're better to take them while you have them.

:37:11.:37:58.

David is starting to group the balls a bit better now. Asking questions

:37:59.:38:59.

of Jonathan Full. Number three. Jonathan driving and

:39:00.:39:45.

was just put off his weight on this one. It is either a perfect forehand

:39:46.:39:53.

draw or a backhand drive. In this situation, he has run around it. But

:39:54.:39:58.

a damage limitation shot, the percentage shot, is to hope to take

:39:59.:40:03.

two away, perhaps get it on the run-through. He is on the backhand.

:40:04.:40:16.

He must be running at this. That looked a bit better on delivery. A

:40:17.:40:25.

bit on the high side. Took one away. David will have to cover those three

:40:26.:40:30.

just in case. At the same time, his own two balls can go out. Both of

:40:31.:40:33.

them could still go at the head. Past the jack. A massive arena here.

:40:34.:40:54.

When the rink is taken away there is a lovely big Bowling Green

:40:55.:41:02.

underneath. Well played. That is good. Makes it three. But, again, it

:41:03.:41:10.

forces Jonathan into that weight shot. The draw is available but it

:41:11.:41:17.

is a tough one. If he catches a connection here he could get a good

:41:18.:41:21.

result. He could get a very good result. I had the feeling David

:41:22.:41:26.

thought that was behind the jack. Again it is a backhand drive. With a

:41:27.:41:31.

good connection, he could score-mac here. He really whipped across on

:41:32.:41:36.

that one but he is in the area. He is very close. Is he going to get

:41:37.:41:41.

the connection? Unlucky. But he did well. The follow-through may have

:41:42.:41:49.

just pushed the ball onto the jack, so a good try.

:41:50.:42:57.

We have a question from Hassan Jamal who is asking about the full length

:42:58.:43:12.

from T to T. I know you don't like answering, Andy, but have a go. 29

:43:13.:43:28.

and a half? And the T to the ditch? Three metres, top of the class! Keep

:43:29.:43:36.

these easy questions coming! In the meantime, David Gourlay playing a

:43:37.:43:39.

very good second bowl to turn the jack off the red one. A foot away.

:43:40.:43:47.

He keeps looking at this. I wonder if he is tempted to run at this. He

:43:48.:43:53.

is normally an aggressive player early on in the end. He did have a

:43:54.:43:58.

look at it. Is like hesitation. I am sure one or two players may have

:43:59.:44:03.

been tempted with that. Where he is coming to is a good home. David is

:44:04.:44:09.

starting to ask questions now, though, isn't he? Starting to draw

:44:10.:44:11.

quite well. That is good again. A spray chalk

:44:12.:44:37.

goes on to the bowl, indicating it is a touch her, and if that ball

:44:38.:44:47.

runs into the jack, it stays live -- indicating it is a toucher. It is

:44:48.:44:52.

marked as toucher. If it is not, it is removed, and takes no further

:44:53.:44:57.

part. Jonathan going for the runner again this time, staying on the

:44:58.:45:04.

forehand. Close. The jack will go. A good strike, as you say Andy, but

:45:05.:45:13.

the ball was going with that. In the ditch. The nearest green ball was

:45:14.:45:17.

about three metres away. It gives Jonathan the chance. David with his

:45:18.:45:26.

little twitch of the trousers. Before he delivers. All right, very

:45:27.:45:33.

go. The second one. A good routine, yes. Right leg first, then the left

:45:34.:45:44.

leg. -- there we go. He is not superstitious like that but it is a

:45:45.:45:47.

good thing to do in terms of having a little routine so you get yourself

:45:48.:45:51.

absolutely right, and you know you are not hurrying them. A good draw

:45:52.:46:03.

shot, too. -- hurrying then. That did not look good. He is out on a

:46:04.:46:09.

good line, though. I think he has given it a chance. I think he knew

:46:10.:46:17.

it was always under. That was a hard one to beat. Could not afford to go

:46:18.:46:25.

falling into the ditch. We are getting lots of different actions

:46:26.:46:30.

from Jonathan on delivery and whether it is on the draw sometimes

:46:31.:46:35.

or sometimes with a weight shot, you know, it is not consistent. I think

:46:36.:46:39.

the drawing delivery actually is fine. It is just when he starts

:46:40.:46:43.

having to push the delivery action, that is when I think the floors

:46:44.:46:47.

appeared really, and I think he is well aware of that. -- flaws appear.

:46:48.:46:57.

The twitching did not do Alex Higgins any harm! No. It was always

:46:58.:47:05.

quite old the place. He is one of Jonathan's he was, I believe. He was

:47:06.:47:11.

world champion. -- all over the place. One of Jonathan's heroes. He

:47:12.:47:26.

is starting to draw well. See, that is quite a nice action, that, isn't

:47:27.:47:34.

it? That is perfect, absolutely perfect. Rock-solid, and then the

:47:35.:47:38.

result is pretty good as well. Correct. It is just when the

:47:39.:47:41.

pressure gets on when the heavy bowl was really required that the flaws

:47:42.:47:52.

appear. And he knows it. He does. We chat about it every now and again.

:47:53.:47:58.

The good thing is that he does not let it get into his head too much.

:47:59.:48:01.

No. There you go again, rock-solid. Yes,

:48:02.:48:21.

excellent delivery. It gives him a decent chance, with this slightly

:48:22.:48:26.

inside, I think. There it goes, not far away. A good ball.

:48:27.:48:52.

Close, very close. APPLAUSE

:48:53.:49:06.

Get it back first time. Once again, David Gourlay's excellent third ball

:49:07.:49:16.

coming in, drawing the shop. The two back green ones, but if he wants to

:49:17.:49:21.

get the shot of the forehand, and David is very calm they -- shot.

:49:22.:49:25.

Content with the way he is playing at the moment. No change. He will

:49:26.:49:32.

have a quick look. He has plenty of time. A time-out. It gives him a

:49:33.:49:37.

little more time to draw on the backhand, if he wants it. He may not

:49:38.:49:43.

have been going down to play that but, as you say, the ball was

:49:44.:49:47.

following back, so there is room on the backhand draw.

:49:48.:49:57.

Now, has he got the weight? It looks good. Falling back for the shot.

:49:58.:50:02.

APPLAUSE The ball falling out. That created

:50:03.:50:12.

that opportunity. It did. The final delivery coming in, resting the

:50:13.:50:16.

green ball, falling in and getting the shot.

:50:17.:50:40.

David playing the forehand error. I do not know if he was going more for

:50:41.:50:50.

cover instead of getting the shot -- fleeing the forehand there. Giving

:50:51.:50:55.

Jonathan a chance to turn the jack here for three or four. Yes, and I

:50:56.:50:59.

am not sure if I would leave that opportunity available to him. You

:51:00.:51:04.

would think with the movement of the jack, you could score a few. Well,

:51:05.:51:17.

Jonathan, you are running. Good try. A good effort, yes. Another foot or

:51:18.:51:21.

so and he would have made it to turn the jack.

:51:22.:51:33.

A change of length here with Jonathan going long, as expected.

:51:34.:52:02.

Letting the jack stay on the rink. 29 and a half metres.

:52:03.:53:18.

APPLAUSE A longer jack lens and suddenly he

:53:19.:53:32.

is back in the groove again. -- jack length. Yes, two good bowls. David

:53:33.:53:43.

needs to hold peer, swing away. He wants to swing away and doesn't want

:53:44.:53:52.

to cover the front of it. Two... Two red, sorry.

:53:53.:53:57.

LAUGHTER Well done, Dan. Jonathan was getting

:53:58.:54:03.

a bit worried there for a moment! It is dropping, but I don't think

:54:04.:54:25.

that will make any difference. Again, still just the draw for

:54:26.:54:28.

David. Not running again. Well, this is a

:54:29.:55:01.

chance now. Any touch on the jack, he is going to make a four. That

:55:02.:55:10.

would level the scores. Even with a two or a three-year, it will make a

:55:11.:55:14.

massive difference to this set. A bad ball to drop short, Andy. Yes, I

:55:15.:55:21.

don't think when the actual end is in front of you, I don't think

:55:22.:55:24.

Jonathan has scored a lot of the shots in this direction to actually

:55:25.:55:28.

change the length, going away from the commentary. He has tended to

:55:29.:55:32.

lose it in this direction. This could be the third coming in. Just

:55:33.:55:41.

holding out... Yes, four good bowls. I think David will keep trying.

:55:42.:55:46.

holding out... Yes, four good bowls. has played a few could last bowls in

:55:47.:55:52.

this direction, David has. This is important. Important he gets there,

:55:53.:55:57.

just to give it a chance into the pocket. , Once again, this last bowl

:55:58.:56:02.

is going to do the damage. Is he going to hold onto it? He has. A

:56:03.:56:07.

brilliant bowl again from David. Jonathan was just getting a little

:56:08.:56:14.

sniff of a chance. So instead of 5-3, it is 6-1. With the last bowl

:56:15.:56:20.

coming in, just a perfect delivery, following an -- following in for the

:56:21.:56:29.

shot. Taking it away from Jonathan. Somewhere along the line Jonathan is

:56:30.:57:28.

going to have Second set, of course. It's been

:57:29.:58:02.

such a good game. I didn't notice? Time flies when you are enjoying

:58:03.:58:10.

yourself? Another cover bowl going in and this

:58:11.:58:32.

one is better. Difficult for Jonathan now. His

:58:33.:58:50.

problem is the red bowl is short of the green one, so he has to hit it

:58:51.:58:55.

fairly solid to get the connection he is looking for. He will probably

:58:56.:58:59.

try and do it with this one. Needs to move something about, quickly.

:59:00.:59:08.

Very good. And a run through. That's a real bonus. With his own bowl

:59:09.:59:17.

there for the double. And the jack stopped on the red. I thought it was

:59:18.:59:19.

going past A perfect landing bowl. Red with the

:59:20.:59:26.

green, follow through. Just the angle. The jack. We couldn't tell

:59:27.:59:31.

from here but Jonathan probably knew it was stopping on its own bowl.

:59:32.:59:35.

This is very tempting, for David here T looks like a good fore-hand

:59:36.:59:39.

run. Yes, well either side would be good. Just needs to make the

:59:40.:59:41.

contact. He looking at it? Is he going to get

:59:42.:59:57.

the two of them? No, jack up. This is interesting. Going short of the

:59:58.:00:01.

minimum distance. Jonathan has a bowl left. I have a feeling he is

:00:02.:00:07.

going to score. I think so. Even you would score. Be nice. What was the

:00:08.:00:13.

rebounding jack distance? From my memory, 20. 20. I hope you are

:00:14.:00:15.

right. Please don't, guys. That one is well

:00:16.:00:25.

enough up. It is not a problem. I must admit, I don't know the answer

:00:26.:00:29.

to that. Anyway, it is the shot to Jonathan.

:00:30.:00:45.

That wasn't really because he got the shot. It was because it was so

:00:46.:00:52.

short. There was no way he was going to make a mistake there. You are

:00:53.:00:55.

very hard on me, Andy Thompson Well, I do occasionally take a little bit

:00:56.:01:01.

of stick from you. I tell you what, it is not easy out there. I know

:01:02.:01:06.

that. You just like to have a little bit of room. More importantly for

:01:07.:01:11.

Jonathan, he can stretch that jack through. 29.5 m. He has often played

:01:12.:01:19.

this end well but David has come in with one big bowl. You have to keep

:01:20.:01:22.

asking the questions, really. Full length.

:01:23.:01:35.

David would normally win the battle of the first two bowls at this

:01:36.:01:41.

distance. It is a pretty good starter. It is almost like an

:01:42.:01:48.

old-style bowl that Yes, it is a non-gripped bowl. Not many people

:01:49.:01:54.

play with the non-grips. They don't. We don't tend to manufacturer

:01:55.:01:58.

non-grips. They tend to be standard with grips.

:01:59.:02:14.

Lots of different colours of bowls available, throughout the whole

:02:15.:02:20.

spectrum. Some people play with lovely sparkly pink ones. I'm sure

:02:21.:02:22.

they are very pretty. Well, as he say, Andy, picked it up

:02:23.:02:34.

on the way past. Yes, slightly up. But he will be happy with that. I

:02:35.:02:38.

think some people are very brave when they pick up the bright yellow

:02:39.:02:43.

boe.s oh, they show up just a little bit too much for me. If you are

:02:44.:02:48.

having a bad game, it doesn't look good.

:02:49.:02:51.

Now will David get down off that line? Looking good. It needs to

:02:52.:02:58.

stop, though. Just over it. Picked the line out very well. All

:02:59.:03:08.

composite bowls now, of course and we don't use lignum vitae now very

:03:09.:03:12.

often. You can get them remanufactured, but it is usually

:03:13.:03:18.

for the crown green. It was really the choice of wood for many years,

:03:19.:03:21.

especially through the early 19 hundreds. Oh, what happens there?

:03:22.:03:30.

You never know with Jonathan. But just seemed like he pushed it

:03:31.:03:32.

through or something. His weight was good. Line wasn't too

:03:33.:03:45.

bad. Just slightly over T almost looked like he tripped on delivery.

:03:46.:03:50.

Here you go, everything looks OK. Oh, well, there we go, something is

:03:51.:03:52.

not right. Well, that's very unlike David

:03:53.:04:25.

gowerly. The old wooden bowls were great, lovely looking things but

:04:26.:04:29.

unfortunately they were just not that good on the indoor carpets, in

:04:30.:04:31.

particular. Just too big a draw. Well, problems now for David

:04:32.:04:53.

gowerly. He doesn't want to leave the double here. May take a chance

:04:54.:04:57.

on a runner, just to take one away. There is a little punch shot on the

:04:58.:05:02.

forehand that will see this shot coming in. Look at the angle. Well,

:05:03.:05:06.

the angle is going to the red ball, so it is not worth T A backhand

:05:07.:05:12.

runner doesn't look too bad here. Looks pretty good to me. -- not

:05:13.:05:15.

worth it. It is all to do with where it is

:05:16.:05:23.

sitting. That is he a all. He will come through on it. I think it is

:05:24.:05:27.

worth trying to take that bowl out. If he goes on to that, it'll go on

:05:28.:05:32.

the respot. If that's the case it'll go in this direction. Great value to

:05:33.:05:36.

him. But I think it is worth playing to it. A good shot on here. I think

:05:37.:05:41.

probably two-thirds. No danger of him taking his own two bowls out.

:05:42.:05:46.

Looking at the forehand, I can't see much value in the forehand. Looks a

:05:47.:05:50.

backhand shot here, David. The trouble with forehand, I think the

:05:51.:05:53.

jack is springing over to the red bowl. He has a short bowl, slightly

:05:54.:06:00.

in the way. He is playing the back - oh no, make up your mind, David.

:06:01.:06:04.

There you go, plenty of timeouts. Just use them. This is an important

:06:05.:06:08.

bowl. 6-4 with two ends to go, brings Jonathan right back into

:06:09.:06:13.

this. Whereas, if he takes one away, you know, it's an awful lot better

:06:14.:06:15.

form. . I don't think that's what I would

:06:16.:06:20.

have played. You make your choice. Still going to be 2-down. I'm not

:06:21.:06:38.

sure about that shot. I can understand why he played t but he

:06:39.:06:43.

has such a good running bowl available to him in his armoury just

:06:44.:06:47.

one-off and Jonathan would have been in a bit of bother. -- Well 6-4,

:06:48.:06:52.

Jonathan back in the game. He needs to score the final two ends to make

:06:53.:06:59.

this into a tie-break. First two of the match for Jonathan Ross. He

:07:00.:07:04.

scored four singles prior to that. Bearing in mind we have played 16

:07:05.:07:09.

ends and he has won five of them. He has been better than five ends, I

:07:10.:07:13.

think. I think he has. I don't think he has had the opportunity playing a

:07:14.:07:17.

full length jack in this direction too often. So this might be

:07:18.:07:23.

interesting. David has tended to dominate.

:07:24.:08:05.

It looks good, a few feet away. Interesting to see how this goes

:08:06.:08:18.

here. If David holds his nerve, scores a single, Jonathan will be in

:08:19.:08:22.

a heap of trouble going into the last end. As I say, basically

:08:23.:08:25.

Jonathan needs to score both ends, too, to have a chance of winning

:08:26.:08:27.

this set. This looks under. If he has extra weight he will hold.

:08:28.:08:39.

I think the weight was good to get close to jack-high but we needed an

:08:40.:08:44.

extra foot or two on it. He is in a heap of trouble now, Jonathan.

:08:45.:08:47.

Interesting choice for David on to the forehand.

:08:48.:08:52.

Not sure about that. If he had tapped his own bowl down, it would

:08:53.:08:58.

have been very, very good. Still, he has played a good bowl. Two

:08:59.:09:04.

excellent bowls. That'll force Jonathan right into the running in

:09:05.:09:07.

the forehand to try to disturb something. Unless he fancies the

:09:08.:09:12.

draw to within an inch? Well, I wouldn't think so.

:09:13.:09:16.

He needs it start this end again, I think t hit the head. -- -- I think.

:09:17.:09:29.

Hit the head. Well, sticking to his strength, the draw. This is not

:09:30.:09:32.

going to be easy. This is coming now, though. It is a

:09:33.:09:48.

good bowl, I have to say, but it is locking in the green one. Well, here

:09:49.:09:54.

we go, Jonathan's third delivery. He needed the bowl. Rested the jack but

:09:55.:10:00.

still 1-down in an end he needs to score.

:10:01.:10:09.

David could set up an opportunity to win the game here. He is playing a

:10:10.:10:17.

blocker. A clever shot. I don't think that's worked though. A good

:10:18.:10:21.

shot to play but I have a feeling it is just a little bit on the wide

:10:22.:10:26.

side. I think so. It is a shot not played too often by the players,

:10:27.:10:28.

blocking the draw. Probably a better shot now, Andy,

:10:29.:10:38.

where the hands aren't swinging just enough. UMPIRE: Two timeouts

:10:39.:10:43.

remaining. This doesn't look easy for Jonathan. This is a tough one,

:10:44.:10:47.

it really is. He had to filter through. Make contact with the jack,

:10:48.:10:52.

as he did last time. And hope he gets two.

:10:53.:11:00.

Once again, sticking to the draw. Well, he is on a good line here. I

:11:01.:11:06.

tell you what, he has given this a go. Will he bend? Oh, just over the

:11:07.:11:13.

weight. He had to give it a chance, Andy. I can't blame him for that. It

:11:14.:11:17.

was very close. Very, very close. He couldn't afford to be short, so, he

:11:18.:11:24.

played it exactly the right way. UMPIRE: One shot, David Gourlay.

:11:25.:11:28.

David, not even attempting to play it. Happy enough, taking the single

:11:29.:11:34.

going into the last end where David needs four.

:11:35.:11:46.

Well, David just went up to retrieve his own bowl.

:11:47.:12:11.

Back in action again. No shot clock for the first delivery. 26 m.

:12:12.:12:37.

Snr medium length, 26 m, David trying to encourage this ball

:12:38.:12:41.

forward. He doesn't really want to be short. Ah, it is a good opener.

:12:42.:12:49.

Jonathan is just the sort of mecurial player that could put four

:12:50.:13:06.

inside that. He certainly could but unfortunately his opening delivery

:13:07.:13:10.

is a poor one. Well under it. It is not like him on his forehand to do

:13:11.:13:14.

that. He is normally very consistent.

:13:15.:13:33.

That is a closer one. Jonathan will have to try to stretch that jack

:13:34.:13:37.

through now. Well, Jonathan is getting forced

:13:38.:13:45.

into playing shots that are so difficult. The extra weight will

:13:46.:13:50.

hold. Now will he have the cover shots going? David Gourlay, just put

:13:51.:13:57.

a back bowl in now. The backhand, split the two reds. Yes, and game

:13:58.:14:05.

over then. This is why it is just so difficult not final end to score the

:14:06.:14:09.

fourth. Players just go for cover. Now, David what are you doing with

:14:10.:14:10.

this one? I I think he is just going to make

:14:11.:14:23.

it. Got away with that. He he needed to be wider. You can tell by the

:14:24.:14:27.

body language that was a rare mistake on the line for David.

:14:28.:14:33.

Although it is possible, to be lying a three, after this.

:14:34.:14:47.

Well, looks like it is just going to come across again. It is going to

:14:48.:14:54.

free him the jack but that isn't going to make any difference. David

:14:55.:14:57.

is right in the middle of the triangle of red bowls. The little

:14:58.:15:01.

red bowl underneath. You cannot see it at the moment. The bottom of the

:15:02.:15:05.

picture. But there is a red one down there. David could put this

:15:06.:15:13.

anywhere. There is not a four here. No, he can pop another one in and

:15:14.:15:17.

Jonathan will force the jack through and hope for a result but I can't

:15:18.:15:19.

see it That will go inside and go deeper.

:15:20.:15:26.

Well-covered. Chalk gun on that and taken away as

:15:27.:15:39.

the marker. I think Jonathan knows there is no

:15:40.:15:46.

hope here of scoring a four. The look on his face, he knows.

:15:47.:15:50.

The second round, World Championships for Jonathan Ross.

:15:51.:15:56.

He is under. UMPIRE: Two shots, second set and match, David Gourlay.

:15:57.:16:09.

Well, a very professional performance by David Gourlay. Yes,

:16:10.:16:14.

David played well. He played well in patches. I think he got better as

:16:15.:16:18.

the game went on. David always a dangerous player but I think he was

:16:19.:16:22.

the better of the two players Just a bit more consistent. He did play the

:16:23.:16:28.

big bowls. That's the important bit. But won the seven, two in the first

:16:29.:16:34.

set, 9-4 in the second. It looked like a great performance from David

:16:35.:16:38.

Gourlay. Because Jonathan Ross is dangerous but he restricted him to

:16:39.:16:42.

six shots in that match and to be honest with you, it is Jonathan

:16:43.:16:46.

Ross, only scored in five ends. Yes, probably a bit unfair in the

:16:47.:16:51.

score, really. Jonathan was lying a couple of threes and David came in

:16:52.:16:55.

and got the second shot. Unfair, however David was the better player.

:16:56.:17:06.

He likes a nod to the supporters. Doesn't too too much of the waving.

:17:07.:17:16.

He likes a no.d first end, first set, David Gourlay, three down,

:17:17.:17:19.

draws the perfect shot. Moving on to the second set, again, first end,

:17:20.:17:22.

turning the jack around the corner for three.

:17:23.:17:29.

That got him off to a great start. Jonathan, showing that he hadn't

:17:30.:17:33.

given up on the bowl, drops in for the single. And David Gourlay

:17:34.:17:40.

showing how good he is, when it comes to the saving bowl. Last

:17:41.:17:43.

delivery, draws the shot with two against him. But again, we can see

:17:44.:17:48.

Jonathan, you know, he is getting the touchers, the bowls on the jack

:17:49.:17:53.

but David Gourlay was just too consistent, banging bowl in, after

:17:54.:17:56.

bowl, just to make it difficult for Jonathan. So, it's the Scot, David

:17:57.:18:01.

Gourlay, through to the quarter-finals. I have to say, he

:18:02.:18:06.

was good value for T not pushed to the limit by any means, but, at the

:18:07.:18:11.

same time he was stretched. Ends 1, a bit unfair, 13-5. The same with

:18:12.:18:15.

the total shots scored. I think Jonathan was better than that. He

:18:16.:18:19.

really was but look at the touchers, 11 for David Gourlay. A very, very

:18:20.:18:23.

good winner. I tell you, what last year's semifinal. This year he is

:18:24.:18:26.

through to the quarter-final. He is looking dangerous.

:18:27.:18:33.

7-2, 9-4 the score. But there wasn't that much of a discrepancy between

:18:34.:18:39.

the two of you. Did you feel it was much closer?

:18:40.:18:40.

that much of a discrepancy between the two of you. Did you feel it was

:18:41.:18:41.

much closer? I don't think there was that much in

:18:42.:18:45.

it. David on three or four occasions played it with his last bowl and was

:18:46.:18:50.

lying three. But he played the bowl when he needed to. His consistency

:18:51.:18:55.

was what eventually wore you down in the end. David you seemed to be

:18:56.:19:00.

hitting your stride from early on in the match, have you been feeling in

:19:01.:19:05.

good nick? Yes, obviously once you get past the first round you feel

:19:06.:19:09.

you are in the competition. It is difficult coming out after a big

:19:10.:19:12.

final because the atmosphere dies a bit. There were a few hairy moments

:19:13.:19:16.

in the first set. There were one or two important moments in the match

:19:17.:19:21.

for you. We will look at them now. Let's look at set 2, end 5. You

:19:22.:19:23.

produced this Jonny was through, possibly three

:19:24.:19:30.

shots. Missed with my first three bowls. You are under a bit of

:19:31.:19:35.

pressure. Thankfully I managed to pull it out of the bag at the end.

:19:36.:19:40.

When we talk about, a lot of people talk about getting the first two

:19:41.:19:43.

bowls in and how important those are. It is every single bowl you

:19:44.:19:47.

deliver at this level, you cannot afford at that take one lightly

:19:48.:19:52.

Certainly I felt, coming this way in particulars I was struggling with

:19:53.:19:55.

his first two bowls and Jonny was nailing it and I was putting immense

:19:56.:20:00.

pressure on myself. Going the other way I was getting it in. Looking

:20:01.:20:05.

forward to the quarter finals and the way the draw developing a few

:20:06.:20:09.

big names went out early on. Does that make any difference to the way

:20:10.:20:13.

you look at the tournament as an overall thing? To be honest, you

:20:14.:20:16.

come into the compo particulars everyone is looking at Paul and Alex

:20:17.:20:20.

and seeing how they are performing. Paul had a Titanic struggle in his

:20:21.:20:24.

first game and just lost on a tie-break. So that kind of maybe

:20:25.:20:29.

opened that section up a little bit but all the qualifiers are playing

:20:30.:20:33.

superb this way and there is a long, long way to go. There is. Thank you

:20:34.:20:37.

very much. Commiserations for today. David, congratulations. Once again,

:20:38.:20:41.

I think it might have been for the 100th time you are through to the

:20:42.:20:45.

quarter-finals here at potters in the singles of the competition. So

:20:46.:20:49.

David Gourlay through to the quarter-finals, congratulations to

:20:50.:20:52.

him. But we'll look at the match that took place this morning. It was

:20:53.:20:57.

in the singles as well. It featured a man had celebrated his 41st

:20:58.:21:01.

birthday yesterday, Mark Royal. He is a man had has been to the

:21:02.:21:05.

semifinals here in 2011 and seeded number 13. If you look at Mark's

:21:06.:21:11.

achievement, he has also won the Welsh International Open in 2008 and

:21:12.:21:20.

the National Mixed Pairs in 2008. His opponent was a player, Robert

:21:21.:21:27.

Paxton who had a great achievement in 2015. He got to the quarter

:21:28.:21:33.

finals here 12 months ago and been to the semifinals on three

:21:34.:21:36.

occasions: He won the Scottish International Open in 20011. The

:21:37.:21:40.

first set went to Mark Royal narrowly. He took it 7-6. Actually

:21:41.:21:45.

with the final bowl of the first set. We will join it in the second

:21:46.:21:49.

set. The score 19-5, at this stage to Robert Paxton. In the commentary

:21:50.:21:55.

box, alongside David Corkhill Sol Greg Harlow. -- is Greg Harlow.

:21:56.:22:11.

A good first bowl. He would like to win the end. But it if he is going

:22:12.:22:24.

to lose it, he'd like to lose a single. But he has a good first

:22:25.:22:26.

bowl. This would normally get the

:22:27.:23:03.

treatment. Backhand. Or backhand runner. Looks

:23:04.:23:20.

wide, doesn't it? He does indeed. This is' not a good connection.

:23:21.:23:25.

That's really not going to help him. It has gone outside the confines of

:23:26.:23:29.

the rink. It'll go on the respot. It is going to favour green.

:23:30.:23:43.

Well, Robert is going to be in a position to put the pressure on

:23:44.:23:51.

here. Both players, two bowls each. I think the best that Mark can do in

:23:52.:23:54.

this end will probably be a single. Very good. Very good indeed. The

:23:55.:24:15.

players practise from the respot, of course.

:24:16.:24:31.

This looks under. Yes, just starting to peel away. It wasn't too bad for

:24:32.:24:48.

line. But it is a set lie against. I think I'd just go deep if I was Rob

:24:49.:24:55.

now, to be honest. Just leave it. I think I would just go deep. He only

:24:56.:25:00.

needs the one to win the set. He has a great one on top.

:25:01.:25:13.

He has gone for the draw. He doesn't want to open the jack up. It's been

:25:14.:25:22.

OK. Well, doesn't leave much of an option here. It'll be a hard one to

:25:23.:25:26.

draw. But two bowls are available, if he wants to drive them out. I

:25:27.:25:30.

think he's going to have to play that. I just wonder now whether the

:25:31.:25:35.

jack is available it trail a couple of yards for two?

:25:36.:25:39.

He might also be thinking - one's probably not enough. UMPIRE: Timeout

:25:40.:25:44.

called. Perfect timing shot around the

:25:45.:25:49.

front, green. Turn the jack for two. He couldn't see the jack from the

:25:50.:26:10.

mat but he knows where it is. He is calling it to get down. Here it

:26:11.:26:19.

comes. UMPIRE: Three shots, second set, Paxton, match tie-break.

:26:20.:26:22.

Well, three shots going to make it look a lot worse than what it really

:26:23.:26:25.

was. Ye, 12-5. Robert Paxton playing

:26:26.:26:34.

really well. UMPIRE: He won the toss, the jack to Robert. The second

:26:35.:26:43.

set, from 5-2 down, to 2-5. You wouldn't have put money on that

:26:44.:26:47.

scoreline but as you said Robert was very good from 5-2 down and Mark

:26:48.:26:51.

lost his way a little bit. He didn't draw at his best and left himself in

:26:52.:26:56.

some awkward positions. But all that will be forgotten now. It is the

:26:57.:26:58.

first player to win two ends. The tie-break ends always seem to be

:26:59.:27:18.

played differently as well, don't they? We are in a situation where a

:27:19.:27:23.

single shot is all that is required. There are no accumulated shots. Of

:27:24.:27:27.

course we get to the third end and the tie-break, it can be destroyed

:27:28.:27:31.

and replayed again, but you have to nominate it. You can nominate as

:27:32.:27:38.

often as you wish but you can only destroy it once. That applies to

:27:39.:27:39.

both players. Good opening bowl here. Mark getting

:27:40.:27:50.

right up and tight. Still a bit of room. UMPIRE: Gap on the last bowl,

:27:51.:27:57.

seven inches. That's enough, seven inches, to slide a bowl in.

:27:58.:28:03.

! Robert certainly made an adjustment. It looks very good. Oh,

:28:04.:28:13.

he is close with this. Yes, a great bowl. Great bowl. Well, he knew

:28:14.:28:18.

there was seven inches to draw the shot. He made it look easy. Right on

:28:19.:28:25.

the jack, Mark might be tempted to run at this to open it up. Very,

:28:26.:28:29.

very hard bowl to draw off the way it is sitting. It is just going to

:28:30.:28:35.

reach off his backhand and try and swing back into the bowl and the

:28:36.:28:36.

jack. He is on narrow It will start to kick back. A good

:28:37.:28:53.

bowl, there. I think he has the attack with the next one, though.

:28:54.:28:58.

Even if he moves his own red bowl. What is he doing? I think Robert has

:28:59.:29:03.

to move another one end, draw from another close bowl. He will not want

:29:04.:29:12.

to tap it. Does not want to open that jack up.

:29:13.:29:28.

Very good. A good ball. Drawing back in, two now. Mark is going to have

:29:29.:29:39.

to attack this, can't see any guarantee of getting the shot.

:29:40.:29:46.

Unless he moves it. Looking for his own red bowl, into the jack. He is

:29:47.:29:54.

certainly into something. What is he going to get and how is he going to

:29:55.:29:59.

get it? He wanted it solid. Just locked on the back bowl. But it has

:30:00.:30:06.

helped, he has opened the gap between the jack and the bowl to

:30:07.:30:11.

about five or six inches, but it could have been so much better if he

:30:12.:30:21.

had got the bowl onto the jack. Yes, Rob's decision now, does he try a

:30:22.:30:24.

better shot or try to cover the spot. That will be hard to get to,

:30:25.:30:33.

Greg. He still has that front projector. Although the same bowl by

:30:34.:30:41.

Mark will be very close and, as you say, it is down to choice. Is he

:30:42.:30:46.

prepared to leave that 56 inches and draw the short? -- five or six.

:30:47.:31:05.

No, he is looking to try and draw number one. A bit of work to do. Now

:31:06.:31:15.

Mark has the thing about this, that planned going away, so it will not

:31:16.:31:22.

help with the runner. Just the draw, David. It will be a tough one to get

:31:23.:31:32.

that jack into the right position. He probably has about two or three

:31:33.:31:36.

inches to draw the shot and win the first tie-break end. Harry is the

:31:37.:31:46.

call from Mark. He is struggling for weight, that is the problem. Dropped

:31:47.:31:50.

it low. APPLAUSE

:31:51.:32:12.

Robert Paxton has won the end against the bowls, such as big. The

:32:13.:32:18.

last one was in favour of Mark and now he is in position of having last

:32:19.:32:26.

bowl. He put away the disappointment at the last end of the first set.

:32:27.:32:31.

Robert Paxton came back strong on the second. As you say, with last

:32:32.:32:42.

bowl on this end, he is probably now favourite. A slight favourite, as it

:32:43.:32:45.

is. Both players making sure they are

:32:46.:33:14.

arriving, and that is good to see, because they are in trouble. It will

:33:15.:33:23.

be a very attacking end. Mark plays the shot, but the head is not in his

:33:24.:33:29.

favour. Again, a positive draw, turning his own red into a better

:33:30.:33:31.

position or else just turning the jack.

:33:32.:33:49.

Two bowls or jack, hits it solid, could run right into the ditch with

:33:50.:33:58.

it. Solid jack, there he goes, and he will go in after this. Will he

:33:59.:34:05.

make the ditch? He has just dropped in, a little bit of a distance but

:34:06.:34:10.

that will not be easy to beat. The front bowls are probably in the way

:34:11.:34:14.

to go across the green to it. They difficult. Well, I don't think Mark

:34:15.:34:23.

can hold his bowl up enough on the narrow side. It is a straight line

:34:24.:34:26.

bowl and it is his backhand so he can play across the line, push it

:34:27.:34:36.

out really wide. He has to give it a chance because he might as well fall

:34:37.:34:39.

in the ditch rather than being two short. That is just peeling away,

:34:40.:34:48.

towards the end, not sure if that is enough. Well, Alan Thornhill thinks

:34:49.:34:58.

it is one red, and he has done well to get there.

:34:59.:35:11.

Yes, Robert, you need to hurry. Good enough. He has done well. Great

:35:12.:35:22.

bowl. He did very well. Lewis, strong fast bowl like that. He must

:35:23.:35:26.

have been right on the edge of the mat. -- loose. That was a great

:35:27.:35:36.

bowl. You would think it would struggle to get there but that was a

:35:37.:35:41.

great bowl. A matchwinner. I think Mark will probably try to push this

:35:42.:35:52.

in. Very tough to beat, on the draw. We will be able to tell by the line.

:35:53.:36:02.

Yes, a narrow line. He is looking to push the green one into the ditch.

:36:03.:36:07.

Well, he is interested. It must be very close. He has got it on.

:36:08.:36:12.

Tremendous bowl. He played it with very careful weight, with a hard

:36:13.:36:33.

weight. OK, one bowl here now for Rob. I think he enjoyed that. Quiet,

:36:34.:36:35.

please. Can he do it again? He is on the

:36:36.:36:51.

same road. Looks good enough. He is chasing it. Has he got the weight,

:36:52.:36:55.

that's a question? Has he got the weight? He has. The match to Robert

:36:56.:37:09.

Paxton. . It was a very good game, no doubt about that. Disappointment,

:37:10.:37:16.

losing at three. To lose it 7-6, came back strong in the second, 12 -

:37:17.:37:27.

five, and won the tie-break, 2-0. STUDIO: Superb stuff from Robert

:37:28.:37:30.

Paxton which means he is through to the quarterfinals. Also through,

:37:31.:37:34.

David Gourlay, and use that match earlier today. There are still some

:37:35.:37:39.

formidable names left in the draw. The lakes of Alex Marshall, Stewart

:37:40.:37:49.

Anderson. Nicky Brett down at the bottom and Greg Harlow. David

:37:50.:37:57.

Corkill is alongside me. Robert Paxton had a tremendous time of last

:37:58.:38:02.

year. I suppose without having the distraction of the other two events

:38:03.:38:05.

he would feel he has a big chance this time around? Absolutely. He was

:38:06.:38:10.

pushed all the way today and Mark Royal, a very good player, he will

:38:11.:38:13.

be delighted to get over that hurdle. It is lovely to win the

:38:14.:38:20.

pairs but he was disappointed last year he did not continue that form

:38:21.:38:25.

into the singles. David Gourlay has been there, but admittedly the world

:38:26.:38:31.

title came a while ago. Corky, is he in the type of form that will get

:38:32.:38:34.

him back on the top again? I think he is. I think he is playing his way

:38:35.:38:39.

back into the turn it, but just lacking that match practice and that

:38:40.:38:43.

is the problem. You need that. Is that because he has been distracted

:38:44.:38:46.

by all of the other things he has been doing, helping Scotland in the

:38:47.:38:49.

Commonwealth Games couple of years ago etc? Up to a point, but last

:38:50.:38:54.

year in the semifinal he really should have got through the match,

:38:55.:38:58.

but this year, he is living in Spain and that is much of a bigger

:38:59.:39:02.

problem. Having said that, I think he is good enough. Darren Burnett

:39:03.:39:09.

wanting to ignite when here for the second time but this time alongside

:39:10.:39:13.

Katherine Rednall, who was your two years ago. Yes, she was, and she is

:39:14.:39:19.

very comfortable here, but Stewart was superb, he really was, and he

:39:20.:39:25.

will carry that into the singles. -- Darren was superb. In the second set

:39:26.:39:31.

she lifted her game. Yes, in the second set in particular, putting a

:39:32.:39:35.

lot of good bowls in and forcing people to play different types of

:39:36.:39:38.

shots. It is imported when you have you read coming in with good bowls

:39:39.:39:42.

that you can build on it. That front bowl in there. Darren was just

:39:43.:39:48.

absolutely wonderful, he really was. Hanging bowls in time and time

:39:49.:39:53.

again. We spoke about Robert Paxton winning two titles last year then

:39:54.:39:58.

coming up short in the singles. Paul Foster, Alex Marshall, they have won

:39:59.:40:04.

two out of three and Darren has won two out of two so far. What are his

:40:05.:40:08.

chances? Probably has the best chance in the form he is in at the

:40:09.:40:12.

moment. If he continues the way he is playing he will be very hard to

:40:13.:40:16.

beat. We will just tell you about what is coming up on the BBC bowls

:40:17.:40:22.

wise in the next 24 hours or so. Highlights on BBC Two at five past

:40:23.:40:26.

midnight in England and Wales and then half an hour later we are on in

:40:27.:40:30.

Scotland with action from all of the day's matches, then back on the red

:40:31.:40:36.

button from 10am for a cracking account between two former world

:40:37.:40:39.

champions, Mervyn King and Stewart and is in. Then 1pm on BBC Two. --

:40:40.:40:50.

Stewart Anderson. Mark Dawes and Alex Marshall, 1pm on BBC Two

:40:51.:40:55.

tomorrow. That is just about it for today's coverage today at Potters.

:40:56.:40:59.

Darren Burnett as we highlighted at the start had a unique opportunity

:41:00.:41:02.

to win his second trophy in 24 hours and that is exactly what he did, in

:41:03.:41:07.

the company of Katherine Rednall. He now has a chance of winning all

:41:08.:41:11.

three. From all of us here at Potters, take it easy.

:41:12.:41:54.

This is Flog It! and today I'm in Bodmin in Cornwall,

:41:55.:42:01.

where it's said there's at least one mysterious beast prowling around.

:42:02.:42:05.

I think it's time for our experts to sharpen their claws.
