-Welsh contingent heading for Rio.

-The sport is Judo

-and the name is Natalie Powell

-Remember that name

-as she's quite a star.

-The old adage states that

-all that glitters isn't gold.

-But it's Olympic year and gold means

-everything to those set on Rio.

-Only a select few of Welsh athletes

-have a real chance of gold.

-Amongst them is Natalie Powell.

-The girl from Builth Wells

-has already shown this year...

-..that she has the talent

-to compete with the very best.

-The Paris Grand Slam is one of

-the sport's biggest competitions.

-Three weeks ago...

-..Natalie had success in the French

-capital, winning the bronze medal.

-Paris is the Wimbledon of Judo.

-No Brit had got a medal

-for eight years.

-2008 was the last time.

-She really delivered and also

-beat Gemma Gibbons for the bronze.

-To have two Brits fighting for that

-big medal was an amazing atmosphere.

-Natalie Powell!

-That was massive for me,

-the biggest result I've had so far.

-When you're fighting another British

-player, there's more pressure.

-And with the Games

-just around the corner.

-Although it doesn't directly

-impact on who goes...

-..in the back of everybody's

-minds...

-..it's still playing heavily

-on their selections and opinions.

-I had to win that fight.

-It was a must-win situation.

-It was do or die.

-Luckily, I rose to the occasion.

-She also reached the standard

-in Glasgow two years ago.

-It was the only other time she

-fought against Gemma Gibbons.

-That's when she won gold

-at the Commonwealth Games.

-There is only one place

-for the Rio Olympics...

-..and the competition between

-the two is as fierce as ever.

-In the long run, I think

-it's made us both better players.

-We're constantly having to compete

-against one another.

-If you haven't got that competition

-in Britain...

-..a bit of you can settle back

-knowing you're going to the Games.

-Maybe it takes the pressure off

-I really like pressure, so for me,

-it's a good situation to be in.

-I just liked fighting

-when I was little.

-I remember fighting my sisters a

-Also playing fighting with my dad

-in the kitchen.

-I was just a rough little kid.

-It wasn't until I was

-got selected for my first Europeans.

-I really took a step forward to

-in the National Sports Centre.

-How important is this place to you?

-This place is amazing.

-I wouldn't have achieved anything

-without Sport Wales...

-..the physios,

-nutritionists and coaches.

-The support system here is amazing.

-I think it's the best

-in the country.

-The Scottish, English,

-even British set-ups don't compare.

-I think we've got

-the best system here.

-Downstairs earlier, we saw the

-next generation of Welsh talent.

-It must be great for you to see

-such an interest in the sport.

-It's really exciting to see

-a new PD and a new coach.

-We've got a great group of cadets

-there to do something with.

-Hopefully, when the Commonwealth

-Games come around in eight years...

-..we'll be in a strong position.

-Hopefully,

-we'll be top of the table.

-That's the aim of everyone

-in the building. Fingers crossed.

-She's a great athlete,

-so professional.

-Sometimes, you tell athletes

-to do something...

-..and they don't put things into

-place.

-She does everything she should do.

-As soon as she knows that it can

-improve her performance she does it.

-For that reason, she's also a great

-role model.

-I do a lot of video analysis.

-I've got spreadsheets

-of notes on all the players.

-Every time I fight somebody,

-I update that.

-Next time, the strategy

-will be slightly different.

-They're constantly changing

-what they do.

-They do it for me,

-I do the same for them.

-It's like a physical game of chess.

-She's incredibly driven.

-She makes good decisions

-..without it being a selfish choice.

-People say I'm a completely

-different person on the mat...

-..compared to who I am off the mat.

-I think that's fine.

-I don't think you need to be

-a nasty person off the mat.

-As long as you can channel it on

-the mat. That's all that matters.

-But I do feel like a different

-Inline Puck Hockey Association.

-The sport is growing in South Wales,

-which is a good thing.

-it's minimal contact...

-..so that's a good safe aspect.

-As a beginner,

-it's easier than it looks.

-It's a fun, physical,

-active way to keep fit.

-That's all I can keep saying

-league, we're currently lying sixth.

-Obviously we'd like to be up top.

-In terms of buying you a new boat,

-what difference would it make?

-It would be incredible.

-Obviously, you need a boat to sail.

-I have to have an Olympic boat

-to sail.

-I've been renting a charity boat

-in Weymouth.

-That means I can only sail if I

-travel seven hours to Weymouth.

-If I had my own boat, I could train

-at home in Pwllheli or Plas Menai.

-I could do it in a local place.

-Pwllheli is just as good

-a venue as Weymouth.

-It's better for me

-to not travel so far.

-I'll still have

-to travel to Weymouth.

-I'll be able to improve vastly

-with more time on the water.
