-We have an exciting year ahead of

-us. I look forward to the challenge.

-Thanks for coming in

-and we have plenty to discuss.

-Firstly, we're going to look

-at one of Wales' stars.

-Non Stanford is one of Wales'

-biggest hopes for a medal...

-..when the games begin in Australia.

-She's a triathlete and Clwb 2

-went to meet her in Leeds.

-I've been into sports

-since I was a baby.

-I was born into gymnastics.

-My mother was a

-British Gymnastics coach.

-I've always been

-surrounded by sports.

-My first passion was swimming

-with Swim Swansea in Swansea.

-When I moved to secondary school I

-started to do cross-country running.

-I hadn't tried a triathlon

-until I was 19 and at university.

-After the first attempt,

-I vowed never to do that again.

-Somehow, I'm still doing it.

-From the start it was clear

-that Non was incredibly talented.

-In the space of one year...

-..she went from being

-the 2012 U23 world champion...

-..to being the outright

-world champion a year later.

-I couldn't really believe...

-..that I managed to progress

-from U23 world champion...

-..to the senior world champion

-in a single season.

-I was the first woman to do that.

-The only other person to do that

-is Alistair Brownlee.

-It was a dream come true

-in 12 months.

-Twelve months after that

-the dream had become a nightmare.

-She missed most of the season

-with an injury.

-I had a really bad injury.

-I had to sit out the whole season.

-That included

-a Commonwealth Games...

-..where I had been excited

-about wearing the Welsh shirt.

-That was the low point of my career.

-At the Rio Games I finished fourth.

-I wanted the gold medal, of course.

-I'll use that fourth place as

-motivation for the next Olympics.

-I loved seeing the Welsh

-being successful in Rio.

-A lot of the women

-managed to win medals.

-Hopefully, we can

-build on those successes...

-..in the next Commonwealth Games

-and bring back medals to Wales.

-I'm looking forward to those games

-and trying to get selected.

-I intend going there to win gold.

-Any colour would be good but I want

-the gold medal at the Gold Coast.

-After I retire from triathlon...

-..I hope to return to Wales

-and live in Swansea.

-I'm a massive Swansea City fan.

-I love watching them play.

-I hope they stay up this season.

-I'm always proud to say

-that I come from Wales.

-When I was growing up

-my mum always emphasised...

-..how important it was

-to be proud to be Welsh.

-I'm desperate to go

-to the Commonwealth Games...

-..so I can wear the Welsh shirt.

-Non Stanford will surely be at the

-Games.

-She's a Swansea City fan and they

-had a drab draw against 'Boro today.

-I'm not sure she'll be happy with

-that result.

-There's still a way to go

-in the league.

-Cathy Williams is my guest.

-She is the Games Manager for Wales.

-Non Stanford is one

-of Wales' big names.

-There will be new names

-there as well.

-It must be exciting

-to have them in the team.

-It's important that people like Non

-are in the team.

-She lifts the confidence

-of the younger athletes.

-She can give tips and share

-her experience of big events.

-If Non is selected, it will be

-her first Commonwealth Games.

-She was injured for Glasgow.

-She will want to get

-onto that podium...

-..especially after missing out

-in Rio last year.

-A mix of young and experienced

-athletes is important for the team.

-They all mention wearing

-the red of Wales.

-It doesn't happen too often

-for these athletes.

-It's huge,

-especially for those sports...

-..which don't get the coverage that

-athletics or swimming might get.

-It's allows them

-to get some attention...

-..and show off the hard work

-they do behind the scenes.

-They train every day of every week.

-It's their chance to shine

-on the big stage.

-It is quite a stage in Australia.

-The Gold Coast awaits

-in a year's time.

-Let's see what's

-coming up next year.

-How would I describe the Gold Coast?

-I would say probably one of the most

-beautiful strips of coastline.

-It's got all the attributes.

-All the magic.

-Just beauty.

-It's beautiful wherever you look.

-You can be surfing perfect waves

-one minute...

-..and then get in a car and be

-out in the hills in twenty minutes.

-We love to show our city off

-to the people.

-We love to show

-what we have to offer.

-The Gold Coast has so much to offer.

-It's young, energetic

-and has a sense of anticipation...

-..for what the future holds.

-Pearson will be

-Commonwealth Champion.

-The 2018 Commonwealth Games

-will bring excitement...

-..and a new energy and

-a new vibe to the city.

-We're all going to come together

-as one team and support each other.

-It'll be amazing.

-When we look back at 2018, we'll see

-it as a game-changer for our city.

-We love to share our culture with

-It's the fifth Games they've hosted.

-Everything is top-notch.

-All the venues look fantastic.

-There are four swimming pools,

-hairdressers, a dentist...

-..a Post Office, everything!

-They are all so excited

-to welcome us over there.

-I haven't been anywhere

-where I'd want to live...

-..apart from the Gold Coast.

-We drive our car onto our drive and

-go into the house.

-They drive their boats into the

-canal and to their houses!

-It's bonkers but brilliant.

-It's the lifestyle of Australia.

-It's an outdoor lifestyle

-where sport is important.

-It feels like the perfect place

-for these Games.

-Perfect.

-They are so relaxed and friendly.

-When we went out there we chose a

-surf club as the base for Wales.

-Everyone on the team has a place on

-the beach which screams 'Australia'!

-Friends and family of the athletes

-can also visit.

-There are so many expats from Wales

-who live out there.

-I met up with quite a few of them.

-Our Chef de Mission, Nicky Phillips,

-is out there at the moment.

-Earlier today, she was celebrating

-that there's only a year to go.

-It was an incredible occasion.

-They'll give a warm welcome

-but they'll also want to win!

-We'll speak more later on

-but we now turn to ice hockey.

-Cardiff Devils

-have had a superb season.

-They've already won the Elite League

-and the Challenge Cup.

-Next, it's the play-offs.

-It all started last evening

-against Manchester Storm.

-The dark clouds were gathering even

-before the Devils and the Storm met.

-Andrew Lord had made sure his team

-were ready for the challenge.

-They thought they had

-an early lead too.

-When I was young I was sure

-I wanted to be a dancer.

-I started doing cross-country

-running at my junior school.

-I always did quite well.

-Then I joined Maldwyn Harriers

-and I've never looked back.

-in Newtown is very determined.

-A 200-mile round trip from

-her home in Trefeglwys in Powys...

-..for specialist training

-doesn't daunt her either.

-It's not easy being

-an athlete from Mid Wales.

-I come down to Swansea to train with

-Wyn because he has great facilities.

-Wynford Leyshon has vast experience

-of coaching at the highest levels.

-400M Hurdlers,

-Dai Greene and Rhys Williams...

-..are amongst those to emerge

-from his stable of athletes.

-Lauren joined Swansea Harriers

-a couple of years ago.

-She had just won the British

-championship in the 300M Hurdles.

-She was clearly talented.

-She lives a long way away

-so I don't coach her all the time.

-We give her advice and do sessions

-with her only when it's convenient.

-Athletics isn't the only thing

-keeping Lauren busy.

-There's work to do on the farm near

-Llanidloes during lambing season.

-And she's revising for A Levels.

-It's a surprise there are

-enough hours in the day.

-Right from the time she learnt

-to walk, Lauren always ran.

-Whenever there was work to do

-with the sheep or the stock...

-..Lauren would opt to run instead

-of the Land Rover or the bike.

-All that running turned out

-to be excellent training...

-..when Lauren pulled off a stunning

-victory in a 300M hurdles race...

-..in the British Schools

-Championships in Bedford in 2015.

-She proved she had potential.

-It came as a complete surprise.

-We knew that summer,

-she'd been running well.

-Her times were improving.

-She just ran a tremendous race.

-She held on

-across the line in first.

-Lauren travels to Swansea and

-Shrewsbury of technical training.

-However, the local club in Newtown

-still plays a crucial role.

-The coaches at Maldwyn

-have been wonderful.

-They all give up their time

-to train with Lauren.

-She thinks the world of them.

-Everybody has been supportive.

-However, ultimately,

-our farm works seven days a week.

-There are times

-when I have to ask her for help.

-I try to keep it to a minimum. This

-time of year with lambing it's 24/7.

-We do need to fulfil Lauren's dreams

-of getting to university...

-..so the athletics

-can go to the next level...

-..where she has a track

-and facilities close to hand.

-This year is tough because I have

-to fit the training and competing...

-..around my studies for A Levels.

-I can't wait to get to university.

-Over the winter, Lauren has been

-concentrating on the 400M race...

-..in preparation for hurdles' races

-in the outdoor season.

-She was selected as the captain of

-the Welsh Women U20 Athletics team.

-They took on England recently.

-The start of my races

-are always really strong.

-I got out of the blocks really well

-and everything went to plan...

-..with me reaching the bell

-in first place...

-..and crossing the lanes in front...

-..but I couldn't quite hang on

-at the end.

-I'm pleased I was able to execute

-the majority of the race plan well.

-She ran really well but she was

-chased down right at the end.

-It was neck on the block stuff.

-We can sort that out with a

-bit more speed endurance training.

-The aims for this season are for her

-to win the Welsh championship.

-We also want her to do well

-in the British Championships.

-We hope she'll be picked...

-..to represent Britain at

-the U20 European Championships.

-My long-term goal is to compete

-in the Commonwealth Games.

-Like all athletes, my dream

-is to go to an Olympic Games.

-That's my biggest long-term goal.

-It was great to meet Lauren

-Williams. Good luck to her.

-Cathy, great to see

-a determined young athlete...

-..talking about the Commonwealth

-Games and the Olympics.

-Great to hear that ambition.

-It's good to see new faces

-like Lauren breaking through.

-It's important to give them

-some coverage...

-..because they put in so many hours

-at such a young age.

-Before and after school.

-We must also thank their parents

-and grandparents for helping.

-It's a real team effort.

-Especially when they're driving

-them around every weekend.

-When they are called into the Wales

-team or get on a podium...

-..it means a lot

-to more than one person.

-It's a family affair.

-They all have their own personal

-story.

-Lauren is from the Llanidloes area.

-Facilities are a factor

-as is all the travelling.

-She has to travel a long way

-to train.

-You need to be a strong character

-to do that.

-They also have so much passion.

-They're not paid to train or

-compete.

-The passion is also shared

-by the volunteers who help out.

-Parents and grandparents

-are involved...

-..because of their passion

-for the sport.

-They love what they do.

-People accuse young people

-of being lazy.

-Lauren is doing her A levels,

-helps out on the farm...

-..and travels for training.

-They're not lazy!

-Definitely not.

-She has had so much natural

-training.

-Facilities in Mid Wales are poor

-but she worked on the farm.

-In Australia, they have

-an outdoor sporting lifestyle.

-It would be nice to see that here

-but the Welsh rain doesn't help!

-They start at a very young age.

-The most recent newcomer is Anna

-Hursey, a table tennis player.

-She is only ten years old

-and in the Wales senior team.

-If the passion is there

-you can achieve whatever you want.

-Welcome back. It's five years

-since Antur Stiniog opened.

-The mountain bike course has gone

-from strength to strength.

-There has been some exciting

-developments there recently.

-We'll learn more about that and

-about Clwb Beicio Mynydd Eryri...

-..as we return

-to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

-Stiniog has a lot of similar track.

-We listen to what cyclists like

-and what the current trends are.

-We're working with Dyffryn Conwy

-Trail Crew to break in a new run.

-It's a mud trail.

-We're here today on behalf of DTC.

-It's a small group of lads who are

-keen mountain-bikers from Snowdonia.

-We thought we'd get together

-to overhaul trails...

-..and maybe build new lines.

-When we were first approached

-and given the opportunity...

-..we were all buzzing...

-..to be able to get up there

-and build what we wanted.

-It's like

-a hand-made ornament really.

-You appreciate it more

-because you've built it.

-I've known some of the lads

-for quite a few years.

-They are real characters.

-It was a great experience

-to work with them.

-The guys turn up early

-for breakfast...

-..get the uplifts for free,

-they spend the day cutting trails...

-..they try it out and ride it and

-see what works and what doesn't.

-It's good to interact

-with the community.

-It keeps them out of mischief

-cutting trails in other forests.

-These lads are so keen

-about riding their bikes.

-It's good to see young lads...

-..putting their efforts

-into something worthwhile.

-See you on the trail.

-I ride for Snowdonia Mountain Bike

-Club based around Llanberis.

-We meet monthly

-for a large club ride.

-We meet weekly

-for evening rides after work.

-It's made up of loads of people who

-enjoy all different kinds of biking.

-Trail-biking,

-cross-country or down-hilling.

-It's a very good way of

-being outdoors around Snowdonia.

-We are here in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

-We'll be riding

-the new track, Bendy G.

-It'll be fun.

-I started riding with the club

-some four or five years ago.

-They showed me the local tracks.

-Sometimes we'll just ride after work

-and then go and meet...

-..at a local pub or whatever

-and have a film night.

-People can have tea together.

-It's about socialising just

-as much as the mountain-biking.

-We've been riding here

-with the Dyffryn Trail Crew.

-They've built a new track.

-It starts with a few jumps then

-works its way down with a new route.

-It was pretty tough to ride it.

-When it dries out

-I expect it will be much better.

-The club does all kinds

-of mountain-biking.

-There are the man-made trails

-like the Marin and Penmachno ones.

-We've been down-hilling

-here in Antur Stiniog today.

-There's everything here from

-trails for those just starting...

-..all the way up to the most

-proficient sponsored mountain-biker.

-The club also hosts

-that whole range.

-It's just a buzz. A great hobby.

-Meeting new people is just great.

-Antur Stiniog has had

-a positive effect on the area.

-We get between 10 and 12,000 people

-coming here to ride the trails.

-That means we can employ more people

-especially in the summer.

-We take on more drivers

-and more staff at the cafe.

-We have become famous

-in the mountain-biking world.

-We've held huge races

-like the British championships.

-Many stay locally, eat locally

-and spend money locally.

-That's good for the area.

-Superb scenery at Antur Stiniog.

-We'll have more mountain biking

-on next week's show.

-The first round of the UK National

-Downhill has been in Nant Gwrtheyrn.

-will be very important.

-They are excited about having

-the Wales team over there.

-We'll be showing what we're about

-and the passion we have for sport.

-I've mentioned that there's only

-a year to go a few times tonight.

-What does that mean in practical

-terms for you as Games Manager?

-I am very busy at the moment

-with different elements.

-It's like assembling a jigsaw.

-I'm making sure everything runs

-as smoothly as possible next year.

-At the moment,

-we're looking at transport.

-When the athletes, swimmers and

-other sportsmen and women...

-..will be travelling over there.

-Some will go out at the start of

-February right up to the Games.

-We're also looking at accommodation

-and the kit which is very crucial.

-We are visiting

-all the different sports...

-..to measure up the athletes

-and coaches.

-Obviously, the teams

-haven't been selected yet...

-..but we know the long list.

-The costumes for the opening

-ceremony is also a lot of fun.

-It sounds very exciting and you'll

-get a warm welcome in Australia.
