-It's been going since the 1990s.

-He's had hundreds, if not thousands,

-of kids come through this club.

-It's a very exciting game.

-It's action packed, there's lots

-of scoring, lots of baskets.

-Everyone comes up and attacks.

-Everyone goes back in defence.

-It's for everyone,

-it's for boys and girls.

-They play separately or together.

-It's an inclusive sport.

-and they want to do the same.

-I've played for the Celts

-We've learnt so much, lots of

-skills, how to shoot, everything.

-for the Celts for two years.

-I like basketball because there are

-lots of different skills.

-It's a very social sport.

-There's more time to do things

-than in soccer or rugby.

-From there, I've been able

-to play and coach at a high level.

-Basketball is increasing every year.

-on getting ready to compete.

-We've done a good job of it

-There are two rules.

-You have to have one foot

-on the floor at all times.

-If you don't do that you get shown

-This is a lifting card.

-You must also keep a straight leg.

-You land with a straight leg...

-..and it stays that way

-until it goes underneath the body.

-There are judges around the track.

-You get a warning card first.

-If you break the rule

-you get a red card.

-Three red cards

-means disqualification.

-What's first?

-Let's start with

-an everyday walking style.

-How do you normally walk?

-I think I walk like this.

-but they don't sideways wiggle.

-I would like to race.

-I'm running and I can't catch up.

-Most kids dream about being

-a Usain Bolt or a Jessica Ennis.

-How did you end up race walking

-from all the events?

-It happened by chance.

-I was in university and

-I had been a cross-country runner.

-I'd done a few athletic events.

-I did race walking

-a few times at school.

-At university, they needed someone

-to do the race walking event.

-I said I'd give it a go.

-Leeds Met happened to have the

-national centre for race walking.

-After the race the centre's coach

-asked me if I fancied having a go.

-I said yes.

-You did quite well in that race?

-You did quite well in that race?

-I did OK.

-The commonwealth champion

-was in the race and she lapped me...

-..and it was only a mile.

-I can't have been going that fast.

-You race roughly over

-the distance of a half-marathon.

-My fastest time running

-that distance is 1 hr 45 minutes.

-I'm very proud of that. How quickly

-would you walk that distance?

-I can do 20K in 1hr 33.

-A half marathon is another kilometre

-It's not the most popular sport

-How does it work with funding?

-Is balancing a real life with

-your professional career a battle?

-I'm currently funded

-by Welsh Athletics.

-That's my only funding source.

-They give me a small amount of money

-for travelling to races and kit.

-That support is fantastic.

-but it doesn't fund me to live.

-I do need to get jobs...

-..and it's quite difficult

-balancing them with my athletics.

-I have a neuroscience degree

-but since graduating I've been...

-..in and out of work

-doing more admin style jobs.

-Getting a part-time job

-in that field is very difficult.

-Things are going well.

-Welsh and British champion.

-You have success behind you

-and Tokyo 2020 must be the target.

-What's before that?

-The World Champs

-is in the UK this year.

-That's what I'm aiming for.

-I've already got

-two qualifying times.

-I have to come top two in the trial.

-The trial is in June.

-As long as everything keeps going in

-the right direction I'll make that.

-The other big aim

-is the Commonwealth Games.

-I'm ranked around No.6

-but I'm aiming for a medal.

-It will be tough because the Aussies

-are very strong in the event.

-On the day, anything can happen.

-Especially with the technical side

-of race walking.

-I have to push forward

-and go for it.

-We're crossing our fingers for you.
