-How many tours have you been on?

-This is my sixth Lions' tour,

-on top of my annual tour with Wales.

-My first was in 1993

-to New Zealand.

-I hope we can come full circle

-with a victory this time.

-It's going to be some tour.

-Let's take a look at the squad.

-After weeks of speculation, the

-squad was announced last Wednesday.

-Gareth was there,

-the Clwb2 cameras were there too...

-..and the players heard

-at the same time as everyone else.

-Even the captain

-was given little notice.

-I found out last Thursday.

-I was in a supermarket car park.

-My wife was getting

-some bread and milk.

-I didn't want to go in

-because the cashier loves rugby.

-I think I hung up on Gats

-the first time.

-I thought one of the boys

-was messing around.

-I've had it every day for three

-week, boys constantly asking me.

-I didn't know.

-He asked me last Thursday afternoon.

-One of the things I admire

-about Sam, not just as a player...

-..is him as a person.

-His greatest quality is

-it's not about Sam Warburton...

-..it's about the team

-and putting the team first.

-The biggest compliment to him

-is what a good individual he is...

-..and what a good person he is.

-You need a seven that can go to the

-southern hemisphere to compete...

-..and compete

-with the ability at the breakdown.

-He has the ability to do that.

-Again, they see him as being

-as good as McCaw at the breakdown...

-..and Pocock as well.

-People are wondering

-why I wasn't the Welsh captain...

-..and now I'm Lions captain.

-It all goes back to making sure

-you're playing well.

-Since the Six Nations,

-I'm pleased with my form.

-I said yes to the captaincy...

-..because I know

-I can look after the performance.

-When they asked this time around, I

-was in a good place with my form...

-..the way my body feels,

-it was an easy decision to say yes.

-There's no doubt

-it's an incredibly tough tour.

-I heard someone say the other day

-when a Kiwi was asked...

-..if they thought the All Blacks

-would win the series 3-0...

-..they didn't want to win it 3-0,

-they wanted to win it 10-0.

-That fires myself up...

-..and hopefully

-gives the players and the team...

-..the motivation

-to go out there and perform.

-We've got some work to do in terms

-of building some bridges from 2005.

-We have some community events

-in schools and hospitals.

-If we can do that

-and play some positive rugby...

-..win over the New Zealand public...

-..and hopefully the rugby

-will do the talking...

-..and we'll have a great series.

-The announcement was made.

-Before we talk about the squad...

-..Gatland talked about building

-bridges - what happened in 2005?

-It was a disastrous tour

-for the Lions under Clive Woodward.

-was his press officer.

-He was a constant presence

-in the background.

-They did very little

-was injured in the First Test.

-A spear tackle coming in

-from Tana Umaga and Keven Mealamu.

-It's a strong squad

-with a number of versatile players.

-That element of versatility

-is very important.

-Injuries will take their toll and

-it'll be a very difficult tour...

-..but this is the strongest squad

-I can remember.

-41 players is more than expected.

-They usually have

-nine replacements on tour...

-..so they're taking some already.

-What about the rumours about

-the squad before the announcement?

-There was a story that

-Jamie Roberts would be included.

-It was all fake news.

-Fake news has appeared everywhere

-else, it's reached rugby now.

-The first was that Launchbury,

-Ford and Joseph would be left out.

-Then we heard Jamie Roberts

-was going.

-As it happened, Jamie lost out

-and Jonathan Joseph was chosen.

-England were announcing their squad

-the following day to face Australia.

-The rumours may have come from

-there, who was being released?

-Warren Gatland was smiling

-on Wednesday morning.

-He felt he'd got the better

-of the press...

-..because of all the fake news

-that had appeared.

-He was very happy with that.

-People will be more careful

-with what they report in the future.

-We'll hear from Gwyn Jones in a

-moment, his thoughts on the tactics.

-An interesting response from

-New Zealand, rather disparaging.

-Are you expecting

-to see that in New Zealand?

-They're confident in New Zealand,

-they think they're the best.

-It doesn't matter what you do.

-It was noted that they have to score

-..that the Lions had to score

-Two tries won't beat New Zealand.

-I think the first thing that strikes

-you is the strength of the squad.

-It's the strongest in decades,

-almost since the 1970s.

-I'd agree with that.

-There's depth

-in almost every position.

-Maybe not so in terms

-of the full-back and hooker...

-..they're the weakest positions.

-In general, even with injuries,

-Gatland can pick a strong side.

-They're now Lions, not players

-from individual countries.

-The Scottish can feel aggrieved

-that they're under-represented.

-They beat Wales and Ireland

-at home this year.

-It doesn't matter

-where they come from...

-..and I don't think

-that influenced Warren Gatland.

-He's chosen the best players.

-That's what everyone wants.

-He places a lot of emphasis

-on competitive personalities...

-..players that never give up.

-Biggar is one such player.

-Some players fall to pieces

-away from home under pressure.

-That counts against them.

-That's why few Scottish players

-were chosen.

-Gatland has huge respect

-for Sam Warburton, always has.

-I think Gatland knew from the minute

-he was offered the job...

-..who would be his captain.

-Against the All Blacks,

-where maybe they're weak at 7...

-..I don't think Sam Cane

-is as good as Richie McCaw...

-..Sam Warburton can be influential

-in the tackle area.

-He is respected by everyone

-for his professionality.

-He's a great ambassador

-For all those reasons,

-he was guaranteed of his place.

-Warren Gatland has the resources

-to play whichever game he wants.

-I'm sure he'll revert to Warrenball

-for the Lions.

-The game will be based

-on a strong defence...

-..kicking the ball downfield...

-..with the forwards and centres

-carrying the ball strongly.

-It'll be interesting to see

-if Gatland's plan...

-..can overcome the Kiwis.

-I still have the All Blacks

-as favourites.

-Two tests will be played

-at Eden Park.

-The All Blacks play the Lions

-once in a generation.

-They've won

-the last two World Cups...

-..but this will still be

-a highlight in their careers.

-They'll be right up for this task.

-I wouldn't be surprised

-if the three tests are very close.

-It's going to be very interesting.

-We know that the tour is important,

-it's an honour to be a Lion.

-It's also a huge tour for the

-New Zealanders, taking on the Lions.

-It's incredible. For the Lions,

-it comes around every four years.

-For the All Blacks,

-once every 12 years.

-That's the only chance they get.

-You'll only face the Lions once.

-That how much it means. It's

-a rugby country for everyone there.

-Everyone knows something about

-rugby and there will be pressure.

-That might be another reason

-Warburton was chosen as captain.

-He can deal with that.

-He can deal with people,

-he can deal with all the questions.

-Whatever the headlines,

-it won't bother him at all.

-He won't lose his head at all.

-You need to be a diplomat

-off the pitch and a player on it.

-He's only the second player

-to lead successive tours.

-Let's take a look at the itinerary.

-It will be a ferocious tour,

-with three difficult tests...

-..three in three weeks -

-that's bound to hurt.

-It's an insane timetable -

-who came up with it?

-Three tests, five provinces who

-are playing well at the moment...

-Ten matches,

-Lots of travelling

-There will be so much pressure.

-There's also a game

-before the Second Test.

-Gatland will need to choose his test

-team and a midweek team very early.

-Everyone will have

-..but there are very few games

-to see if the combinations work.

-Who plays well together? There's

-very little preparation time.

-They fly on Monday,

-they arrive on Wednesday...

-..the first game is Saturday.

-Their feet won't touch the ground.

-That gives New Zealand

-a distinct advantage.

-Gareth Charles certainly has!

-He was showing his off

-in Caernarfon this morning.

-The big guns were out in Cardiff for

-the strongest Welshman competition.

-Before the competition, we met the

-organiser who was also competing.

-Gareth Williams to his mother, but

-Gaz Hench to the world of muscles.

-It started about five years ago.

-I had a nervous breakdown.

-I started running

-but running proved too hard.

-I got back into the habit

-of going to the gym.

-The more weight I lifted

-the calmer I became.

-I carried on and enjoyed it.

-When it goes well it's pleasurable.

-When it doesn't it's sheer pain.

-Pains in the ankles,

-the hips, the shoulders.

-You can be sore

-the day after training.

-Even when you don't want to train

-you have to embrace the pain.

-Embracing the pain

-can sometimes be pleasurable.

-You have to be a bit nuts.

-I'd say 90% of it is mental.

-You have to eat every two hours.

-You have to drink

-5-6 litres of water.

-You wake up in

-the middle of the night hungry.

-You have to force yourself to eat.

-It's a lonely sport.

-Most of us are insecure.

-You need to prove that you are

-the strongest of them all.

-If someone can do it better than you

-that eats at you.

-You have to overcome the fear and

-work harder and harder and harder.

-Your strongman career starts

-the first time you enter the gym.

-Every second of every day you have

-to live the life of a strongman.

-24/7, 368 days a year.

-You have to be selfish.

-Being a father of three

-makes that difficult.

-You have to do it

-if you want to hit the heights.

-While most people were resting and

-relaxing over the Easter weekend...

-..there was a crew of men and women

-in Cardiff preparing to push...

-..the extremes

-of physical capability.

-First up were the women

-in the 63kg and 82kg categories.

-Five different disciplines

-that encapsulated...

-..lifting, carrying, throwing

-and moving unthinkable weights.

-Natalie Roberts

-shone in the under 63kg category.

-She broke the Welsh record

-in the deadlift - 152.5 kilos.

-It looked easy

-for the woman from Barry.

-Despite the best efforts of

-Connie Middleman from North Wales...

-..and Nat O'Shea from South Wales

-in the under 83kg category...

-..Ceris Moyle from Newcastle Emlyn

-dominated the competition.

-She was way too powerful with

-the blocks and the Atlas Stones.

-The first cups of the day

-for Natalie and Ceris then...

-..with everyone delighted

-with their efforts.

-I really enjoyed how hard it was.

-The other girls made it a challenge.

-I'm happy I won it.

-We help each other

-and there's a good atmosphere.

-We're off to the British

-Championships as the Welsh team.

-I was really nervous

-in my first ever competition.

-I threw myself in at the deep end.

-All the girls

-gave me so much support.

-Absolutely fantastic.

-Fantastic. I feel like Wonderwoman,

-as if I could lift anything.

-I started out because

-I wanted to lose weight.

-I'm now trying to lift

-the weights instead.

-It's something different

-I love to do.

-I feel amazing

-having smashed my personal best.

-I've smashed by personal goals.

-Next up were the men

-in the under 105kg category.

-There were five of them.

-In the end it was a two-horse race

-between pals from the same stable.

-Natalie Roberts' partner

-Nathan Szuchnik and Jared Lewis...

-..faced off in six torturous events.

-That included the Conan Wheel

-which weighed 260 kilos.

-Nathan eventually won

-ensuring a place...

-..in the British,

-European and World Championships.

-It also meant a

-double celebration for the family.

-It makes it easier because

-we can do train together.

-It makes life easier.

-Apart from when we both get hungry.

-That's dangerous.

-Wales' strongest couple.

-It's official.

-On the second day

-the lighter men fought it out.

-Lighter maybe, but just as strong.

-Despite all the commitment

-in the Under 80kg category...

-..it was clear that Thumpa Todd

-from Swansea was the main man.

-Gwyn James was second

-with Matt Bayliss third.

-In the under 90kg category...

-..several competitors like

-Tyrone Jones made an impression.

-James Noble was pleased

-with his efforts in the squat.

-The category was dominated

-by Calum Evans from Llanelli.

-He gave it 110% of his effort.

-There were 15 muscled giants

-entered in the open category.

-A couple of new faces wanted

-to make an immediate impression.

-Rob Cooney goes back

-for his second 100kg bag.

-It's his first time

-in this competition.

-He's pretty quick

-but the final two bags are 125kg.

-That's slowed him down.

-You need technique and strength

-to go with the speed.

-15 metres from the line.

-The strain is clear

-but he is really quick.

-43.08 seconds gives him the lead.

-With so much effort being expended

-it was painful just watching.

-Hywel Owen-Thomas from St Clears...

-..certainly enjoyed flinging

-beer barrels over a 3.5 metre bar.

-It was a furious battle

-at the top...

-..with Mark Jeanes

-trying to hang to his title.

-Ben Badger Brunning from Bala

-was his greatest challenger.

-The frame walk was crucial.

-Mark Jeanes,

-the current champion from Bridgend.

-He needs a win

-to put pressure on Ben Brunning.

-There's 340kg on the frame.

-It's a 20-metre course.

-The time is 12.3 seconds.

-How will Ben Badger Brunning react?

-12.3 seconds is the target.

-He lives in Bala

-but comes from Harwich.

-He's really quick. 10.77 seconds.

-He's smashed the time of Jeanes.

-He's really happy about that.

-The Badger from Bala has won

-Wales' Strongest Man for 2017.

-There are so many

-strong people here today.

-It's amazing that I won.

-It was tight all the way.

-I messed up a few yesterday.

-It didn't cost me

-so I was happy with that.

-I was a different person today.

-I had to do well to win.

-It's all about

-wanting to improve on last year.

-I came second to Mark and all year

-I've been wanting to beat him.

-The year before I was third so

-I didn't want to stall at second.

-Getting the win

-was my target all year.

-I'm disappointed.

-I didn't perform as I expected.

-Back to the drawing board

-for next year.

-I've come fourth

-but I wanted to win.

-I've walked away uninjured

-so I'm happy with that.

-Every year it gets tougher

-and heavier and quicker.

-You always have to start afresh.

-They have to iron out any weaknesses

-and improve for the next year.

-You eat, work and sleep it.

-It's all about preparation.

-It takes over your life.

-Your girlfriend and your family

-have to come to terms with it too.

-I'm a 21-stone baby.

-They cope with a lot.

-When I get home, I'll get a load of

-food to chill out in front of a TV.

-When I've recovered

-I might celebrate.

-A pint, definitely.

-McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Pizza

-Hut, Chinese, kebabs, you name it.

-I see strongman competition

-like a circus.

-Doing silly things

-to entertain a crowd.

-Love it.

-Absolutely brilliant.

-Congratulations to them all.

-You don't want

-to think about a 21st baby!

-Should they go on the Lions' tour?

-They can shift for their size.

-I've had to get used to rugby

-players shifting metal at gyms.

-Not like that though.

-They might have a future.

-Shifting metal, I like it.

-..here's Bangor Gymnastics Club.

-Welcome to Bangor Gymnastics Club.

-It's been going since 1981.

-We only moved here

-a couple of weeks ago.

-There's still

-a bit of work going on.

-It's all nearly ready and

-the kids are in training already.

-We have just over 750 members.

-Boys and girls. We also

-have classes for the disabled.

-Adults also come here

-for classes in the evening.

-We're one big family as a club.

-We've all been helping each other

-as the club moved to the new site.

-This is fantastic.

-On the first day I came here

-after all the hard work...

-..of getting everything

-ready to make the move...

-..the smiles on the children's faces

-brought tears to my eyes.

-I coach for six hours every week.

-We do courses for adults too.

-I'll be trying one of them tonight.

-We'll have

-the biggest foam pit in Wales.

-We work hard to try and get our

-boys and girls to a high standard.

-We've got another two girls

-into the Welsh Development Squad.

-There aren't many clubs in

-North Wales that can boast that.

-It's tough to get in.

-Imagine all the little girls

-doing gymnastics across Wales.

-I come here

-for two hours every week.

-I like all the new stuff.

-The cross-check is very bouncy.

-It allows us to learn new skills.

-I've learnt five new ones.

-When you master something new

-you run and ring the bell.

-Everyone goes quiet and

-you show them what you've learned.

-You've learned a new skill

-and everyone is happy for you.

-You're really happy about that.

-I like learning new skills.

-Falling into the foam pits

-is good fun.

-I'd like to be an Olympian

-and a gymnastics coach.

-As directors we are all

-passionate about gymnastics.

-We want to get

-more children taking part.

-Not everyone will be

-a Louis Smith or Beth Tweddle.

-However, it helps kids keep fit...

-..something they can enjoy safely

-where they can make new friends.

-Gymnastics is for everyone.

-Lovely to meet Bangor

-It was near to home.

-I just enjoyed playing the game but

-at 16 I moved to Llandovery College.

-That's when I started

-thinking about it as a career.

-Rotherham offered me a contract.

-It coincided with me ending college

-so there was no reason to stop me.

-I wanted to play

-for the Welsh regions...

-..but when that didn't look like

-happening I headed for England.

-Players move in England from

-the Championship to the Premiership.

-That helped me decide.

-There was a phone call

-that said Leicester wanted me.

-That was a no-brainer.

-Leicester had an injury crisis

-and they needed players right away.

-I was shocked but I took the chance.

-I settled in really quickly.

-People were good to me.

-I've made good friends.

-I'm happy to have played

-an unexpected number of games.

-The chance came

-to play for Cardiff Blues.

-It's the perfect time to come back.

-A team of the Blues' size

-need to be in the Champions' Cup.

-It's a team that's

-developed a lot this season.

-The new coaches and the players

-in place suggest to me...

-..that it's a good place

-to be moving to right now.

-We all dream about

-playing for Wales.

-I want that too.

-It's a dream to play for Wales

-and going back there won't hurt.

-That's the dream but I'll be

-concentrating on the Cardiff Blues.

-I need a regular place in the Blues'

-team before I can hope for any more.

-I hope it goes well

-and I'm there for years.

-I've never been anywhere for long

-so we'll have to see.
