Day 2 Darts: World Championships - Extra

Hello, welcome to your second installment of Darts Extra, your

late-night review of some of the Lakeside best action. We start with

one of the women's matches as defending champion Anastasia

Dobromyslova took to the Oche against one of last year's losing

supply fine aist, Lorraine Farlam. -- semi-finalist, Lorraine Farlam.

She is the favourite to win the lady's's title, Anastasia

Dobromyslova originally from Russia. Winner here in boast of her last

two tournament, albeit four years apart. She has only one set in

winning those titles in 2008 and 2012, but today does present a

different type of test because she faces her close friend and sparring

partner, Lorraine Farlam. Lorraine partner, Lorraine Farlam. Lorraine

was a semi finalist last year. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,

A good start. Anastasia, when her husband, Tony Martin, in actual

fact 2002 was runnerup in the British classic. He went out in the

world championship to Simon Whitlock. Anastasia's claim to fame

- that her husband's uncle once played golf with you! Thank you.

Big smiles. I tell you what, they have had some good darts already

this weekend. Excellent audience, you can't fault them in any way.

Another one of those lady darts players here watching on is Sharon

Prins. Apparently she is a very good dart player herself, making it

here. Very good action. Not the not the normal position. Lorraine, you

require 106. Anastasia, you require 97. The first sign of a checkout

19 which would have left double-top. A double 8 and a mighty seven.

Winstanley. You have seen how good Dean is. Apparently it is brushing

off on Lorraine. Dean played in the Yorkshire squad. Anastasia you

signifying the two world titles that she has won. It could be a

He is obviously a very good coach, is Tony Martin. She is on 220,

She did spent a little time away before coming back. She was playing

against the men then. I think she could still beat them now. First

class. That is particularly impressive. Any of the men would

have been proud of that. Albeit early in the game but she has won

the last three legs and hit a double so far. Lorraine, first two

Tweedle dumb to me. Lorraine you require 101. She was that quick

there to get that double 18. She will be coming back, she has three

darts for 36. That takes Anastasia down to 0 so it is double 18 for

Lorraine Farlam here. She takes the first leg of the second set as well.

Game on! So one set. I have never seen her

look so stern. Really means business at the moment. Just a

reminder that in these ladies quarterfinals it is the first two

to two sets rather than the first to three as in the men's game, but

it is still the best of five legs. It is very hot up there. You have

no excuses. Anastasia also very impressed with the soft-tip version

of the game. Plays a lot out in the Far East. Lucrative business.

America. Marking the boards. They have big championships in America.

A ton hasn't been scored in this leg by either player. Anastasia you

require 123. There is your treble 18 and then the ball, oh, just a

fraction. Lorraine, you require 80. So 80 for Lorraine. Another one of

those, now double-top. Staiz staiz you require 72. -- Anastasia you

require 72. 20 or 12. The double- top. Chance now for Lorraine. You

have to take it. Seven double 16. Oh, 57!! Anastasia clean your boots.

Anastasia you require 20. Double ten it is, but she has done it

herself. Lorraine is back for a chance he didn't believe she would

get. She only just missed it the last time - double nine she needs

now. Anastasia you require 20. Double ten. And the second leg

Anastasia Dobromyslova. Third leg is Lorraine to throw first. Game on.

It is all square in this set. finishing has been decent for both

players at the start of the game, but particularly for Anastasia

fraction makes all the difference. Recovered well.

Lorraine reached the semi finals here last year and also the semi

finals in hp hull back in autumn and beaten in the decisive leg.

Went all the way to sudden death. Finalist at the BDO international

open and semi finalist at the Swedish open, but most

significantly winner of the Welsh Masters. They do have a lot of

events now, the ladies, because they have proved their worth and

that is no joke. Anastasia marching ahead. And her first 140 of the

match. And set up a 120 here, Shanghai. Treble 20 will lead

double-top. 235 is the score remaining for Lorraine. Could be

six darts here for Anastasia. Anastasia, you require 60. She only

requires 60. 19 leaves double-top. Just as well she has got a clear

run. Smiles. But Lorraine still some way back. It is a

disappointing leg for her. Will she get a shot next time? Double-top.

Game and and the second leg Anastasia Dobromyslova. This second

set taking the pattern as the first - Lorraine Farlam winning the first

leg and Dobromyslova winning them all after that. One leg away now

from a place in the semis. Lorraine just one or two loose starts that

haven't helped at all. Quite liked her chances of having a double at

the doubles. But it is not over. Another excellent year for

Anastasia, winning the England Open, the an theer with p Open, the

tournaments just keep on coming. She is the favourite to retain her

crown here at Lakeside. She is the girl to beat. I promise you. Not

doing so well here. Four throws and the highest score was 58. And 45

for Lorraine. It is slipping a little bit. There we are,

recovering. There is Dean. He knows that Lorraine is in trouble.

Especially after these three. That is what they want. The first

be. And she follows a 180 with a 144. That is the second highest

checkout we have seen this week. It takes Anastasia Dobromyslova throw

the semi finals as she I ams to successfully defend the crown she

won here, there is no stopping the young lady from Russia. Her close

friend Lorraine Farlam beaten, sends the message to Tony,

Stephen Bunting from Liverpool arrives here as the world number

one, ceded number one as the one who swept all before him in the

last few months of 2012. He was up against Jammie Dodger, Jamie will.

The big stage here at Lakeside is no place for a holiday. Your

in BDO world darts and the man who has only been playing for four

years having not picked up a dart for a deck seed. The top seed

against a man who won the top prize on Bullseye. It could be a cracker.

the Jammie Dodger, like I said, a winner on Bullsyey, I remember it

Bunting. And Jamie Wilson the lad from Huddersfield. The great

Wilson is a Bunting hunting. 180!! It has got them going. First

13-dart leg to kick us off here on the Lakeside stage.# Wilson I was

chatting to a few momentsing a, so calm. So composed. It is his

Lakeside debut but he says he has nothing to lose, she going to go

out and enjoy it. -- he is going to go out and enjoy it. He is 14 years

of age. He started playing darts when he was 15 years of age. Made

the Yorkshire team and then gave up. Here he is. He is at Lakeside. A

player in form. That is why she the world champion.

they start as they mean to go on because this is just tremendous.

He can do this in two darts. A double 8 for the set - oh, wow!!

The first set the advantage was to Bunting. The teenager champion is

now a man. He has won every title from teenagers and now he is on the

scene here. Possibly the most successful youth player of all time

in darts. In 2012 he won the World's Classin', the world Masters,

the world's sun Masters and just last month the Idaho' Masters.

couple of local tournaments in St Helens in the last couple of weeks

just to get match sharp. Do you know he plays five time as week in

the local pubs. He practices for an hour a day, no more he says, until

he reaches Frimley Green and then he ups that to two or three. 125.

Steven you 132. He could be a mathematician as well. Stephen

tells me he practices his scoring only because he says she that good

he will give himself six -- he is that good he will give himself six

darts at a double. He has only needed three darts so far. Is this

four out of four on the double? the first one he missed. James you

require 92. No, he has gone for the 60s, so double 16. Double right.

Do you feel he needed that? He is going to get caught out on this one

you have double four to aim at. He is on the board. It is Stephen to

throw first. Game on. Only one good thing - James is not

second leg Stephen Bunting. James to throw first. Game on. They are a

happy crowd aren't they here at Lakeside? Looking like some of them

had late nights as well. Where do they find all of these from? Blobby

George. We will say hello to Stephen's aunty Lesley and uncle

Barry who are back in St Helens looking after baby Tobie who I am

told is wearing a specially made darts shirt, exactly like daddy's.

Played it well. Yep, staying alive, the music. It is great fun, though.

Always fun. 125. The fans really do add to the programme. James you

require 70. So business end of this leg. Treble 18, now 20 or 12.

Double 16. 38. Stephen you require 146. Not the best finish. He is

going for the 19 so that is all right. Double 16 left here. 130.

OK. Double 16. Double 8. Yes, right in the corner. The third leg,

Stephen to throw first, game on. 1346789

-- 134. One thing he say, James Wilson, is

that he will never give up. Well, he won the jersey Classic and

runner up in the Jersey Open. There is his dad, ever present. Looking

after him ever since he was a toddler. He had a dart board.

part of the wider team Bunting family. Yeah, he knows he has

followers. 140. This is magic. They are getting their money's worth in

this first match to be honest with you. And then some, Tony. Stephen

is on 88. Chance to level this. Stephen you require 88. And the

fourth leg, Stephen Bunting. James to throw first. Game on.

The doubles are all the same size and they decide which side goes for

it. Wilson's throw. Yeah, and you think Jamie is going to have to get

this leg. 100. If he is going to have any chance because since that

is the level, Bunting will really have a great lead. Look at this.

140! All right under pressure in this leg James Wilson. He practised

three hours on Christmas Day, three hours on new year's day. 140.

pressure. Keeps himself in with a shout. You have an opportunity now.

On 27 December, Tony, James won the Chester Cup beating John Wilton and

Dean Winstanley. He has rarely been away from a darts board in the past

fortnight. 125. It is a new referee, Anthony Dundass from Scotland.

There he is. They do a great job. It is a tough old job, you know,

tone any? You have to keep counting, keep all your options open and hope

that the players don't go an odd way and rip you up. Yeah, Rob

butler retired this year, taking a rest. But he will certainly be

watching. He might even be counting the numbers, to be honest. James

you require 86. The level is set. Treble 18, 18 and bull now. Bull's-

eye. And the second leg, James Wilson, it is Stephen to throw

finished a leg on the bull, in the match. I tell you what, he has got

Stephen thinking has Jamie. He has kept with him all the way through.

The one thing he kept saying this morning is, "I tell you what, I

will never give up." And he hasn't. Under a barrage from Bunting. The

Bullet looked like he would streak away with the match, but no, taken

back in the second set and now under pressure in in the third.

darts! Oh, dear. Where are they coming from this morning? It is

great fun, but it is not for these with at the moment, especially

Single 20, he is going - oh, no, double ten he is coming for. Oh,

yes!! And the set, James Wilson. This is the time for the underdog.

First set, third he, it is James to throw first. I think Stephen needs

something stronger than water. tell you what the number one cede

has gone out in rund one of the world champion on seven additionals

but never since 2000 - 13 years ago. Bunting in one hell of a battle

here. Talk about comebacks. Yeah, his

father is not too happy down there, look. 180!!

A great game. So much talent on this stage.: Fabulous, isn't it? He

is not playing badly, Bunting bubt. An average of almost 97 but he is

2-1 down in sets. He is one set away, three legs away from going

out. I look at these averages, 96.05 for

Bunting. 86.98 for Wilson. The averages go down with the doubles,

so it just shows you how well in the scoring department. Game on!!

Didn't see that one coming. He says he only practices his scoring

because he is confident he can get to a double early enough so that it

doesn't matter, and look at that. 26 times Stephen Bunting has hit

100 or more. And is this another maximum - yes! 180!! Could have put

those on a pin head. There it is - nearly bounced out. I feel we are

going back now to the '20s. They loved their darts in the '20s.

These lads like them in the treble 20s. That is just the double. Great

throw. Full extension of the arms. 180. James you require 116.

Suddenly under real pressure, 116. Treble 17 for double 18, can't do

it. Bunting for 56 for a twoing he lead. Stephen you require 66.

for a double-top, the mark is there and Stephen is there.

Enthralling is the word, isn't it? Do you know what? Darts is just

brilliant, isn't it? Who cares which World Championship it is, who

cares if it is even a proper sport or not - it is thrilling, it is

exciting, it is tense, it is fun. And you can't ask for more than

that on a January Sunday afternoon. Chris Evans is missing, thoughs

isn't he? Come along Chris and enjoy yourself. I will see him in

the morning. 100. That is a good cover shot. Keeping

Bunting under pressure but it is two legs up this in this set makes

his face. Oh, this is great! He hit a 180 when he needed it. He had one

darbgts double 16. He hit it to take us into a deciding set and

that's what we wanted. A bit of respect for each other. Well, James

was saying, Tony, that he's beaten Steven more often than not. So

Steven Bunting would have been more scared. He told me that riled him a

bit and made him want it more. Look at those check-out percentages.

Both of them pretty good, especially Steven Bunting. He just

missed the double 16 under all sorts of pressure. The thing is, he

stopped playing at the age of 17 and didn't play again until 15

years later, Wilson. It's in the mind darts. If your mind doesn't

want to pli, you're not going to play well. Well, this man has

tallent. He's proved it. Six darts to move ahead in the deciding set.

Jamie tells me that Ray Butty was his mentor. I know Ray very well,

we played together. Steve venue, you require 17. Here we go. There's

the tebl 18. Here comes the double 8. 140! And the scores keep coming.

Oh, not a very good throw here. That was his best mean look, Steven

Bunting. And you just look like you want to give him a cuddle. Still a

youngster at heart, I'll tell you. They should produce Steven Bunting

teddy bears. You must win by two clear legs until it gits to 5-5,

then we'll have a tie-break. Objection, here we go. Great darts,

the last two. He'll be back for 44. There's weight watching on. Another

player... They prefer Jamie to take this away. Double 16. Double 8. Oh,

no! At this stage he can't afford to miss! Not a bad finish 113.

Still a chance. Treble 19. He's back and he saw that little nod

there - Jamie, coming back to the double 8. And all sarts of pressure.

Double 8. Can he find a way through? Must find a way through.

Doom and glums. 121. The number one in the world. Is showing the way.

True character in this match. both players have treated us to

some smashing darts. Is this the final leg or do we have more twists

to come? So they are on the flights. The 96, score, what we've got to

reply, slipping away. Yes, I don't think it will be long from here.

It's a slip that's fortunate enough. Under pressure, show him. Those

three darts at double 8 you just felt were so crucial. If one of

them had gone in with one leg a piece. Well he's on a finish of 160.

It would be a nice one to go out on to take the match. Steve venue

nine. Tense moments. Oh, unlucky. Another opportunity. Another set.

It's a match that's been so good it shouldn't finish on a double 1 but

will it? Will it? It will. And the number one seed will take his place

in round two. What a game! Well played Wilson. Well played Steven

Bunting. The bullet is through. Listen to the applause out there

for these two players. Magnificent! What a way to start. But a true

champion has proved his worth. Unlucky, Jamie. Every player on the

big stage wants to win their first round match, none more so than

Scott Mitchell, never won in six previous visits between them. All

at stake, everything to play for. Which one would crumble and which

one would conquer?? So far, serial losers on this stage. Not elsewhere

but on this stage. That's going to change for one of them today.

There's Scott. He wants to do some commentary, he wants to move into

that profession. Let him concentrate on his darts for now.

Mark from Greenwich. Scott here from Dorset, a lovely part of the

country. He reached the semifinals. At the Masters a month ago, Scott

says having done that, he's confident he can bring his A-game

to the big stage. I can tell you in the last half hour he's been

listening for his favourite music to relax into before coming on

stage. Bon Jovi, Kanye West, a favourite of your's Tony. And the

last song he listnce to before he's called on stage is by Saliva.

finishes 134 on treble 18. He's only got the four off. So 19 or 15

depending on how he feels. So tops. For the opening leg, England. He's

already off. I can't see him now anyway. Mark Barilli is wearing

contact lenses for the first time this year. He wears glasses at home

but didn't want to wear glasses on the Lakeside stage for the past

three years, so he struggled a little bit. For the past six months

the contacts have worked well for him, he says. As Katie and Sam look

on, they are Scott Mitchell's daughter and son respectively,

cheering on dad. A lot of the fans are following their parents. They

would feel proud though when they go back to school., "Did you see my

daddy on TV?" Will they see daddy win for the first time on TV?

wife's Sharon's here and she stitches the shirts. They get

through a lot of pink in that household. He played in school

year he wants an all-pink keepers Into They all meet up on Christmas

Eve for a game of blind killer. And he was moaning that they all gang

up on him. So he doesn't get the pennies on the table. I bet there's

a few punk youred heads in there. Who killed blind killer? I'm not

saying. I find it hard enough with seeing. Scott Mitchell really

showing the way in the past two throws. Well, this would be nice. A

big finish but... On 251. Won't be doing much. He's shaking his head.

Scott, you require 118. 20s or 18s. 18 for tops. For the set, yes.

Scott Mitchell. Well, that didn't take long. First leg to the first

game on. OK, so first leg, second set. Down past the start and making

a move. Well, one of these players will become the tenth player in

championship history to lose each of his first four matches at

Lakeside. But whoever it is, can console himself with the thought

that three players have lost five in a row. They are Tony Pain, David

Richards and Steve West. I haven't sign him much on the circuit. It

does cost a lot of money. either go around the world and pick

up the ranking points and you get a seed in place here or you go

through the lottery and the nightmare that is the international

qualifiers. Not much excitement in this particular match. We had to
