Stprofy. Day 3 at Lakeside saw unchartered territory for the nine

'Times' women's world champion Trina Gulliver. She's never had to

qalify for Lakeside before as as a result her qualified opponent Julie

Gore happens to be the reigning women's champion. Your commentary

on the Lakeside stage. Trina Gulliver throwing cards with her

game face on. Nine times the champion, of course. In 11 visits

she had never lost before the final before last year. She certainly is

the golden girl of darts. Julie Gore, the Ice Cube. Never dropped

past the first round. Maybe there could be a difference because this

young lady, she's rarely come to the fore of late. She's won two

world Masters. Julie has been coming to Lakeside

since 2008 and has lost in the quarterfinals, which is the first

round on each of those five occasions, but her form, as you say,

Tony, this suggests this could be the year where things change - if

only it wasn't Trina Gulliver in her way.

Trina has been slipping up with her finishing in the last couple of

set away from becoming six out of six. She has been trekking around

the country on the bird's eye all shows. She only played men. She

only lost two. Julie? No, Trina. She was the world champion. Tell us

the second round. If he was to do so again, he would have to beat the

Englishman, Tony Eccles, who last appeared here on the big stage in

That little snakebite, De Vos has felt it in the opening couple of

minutes. A very confident character, isn't he? Tony Eccles. 59. 43 years

Well, it will only be a happy birthday if things go his way over

the next 40 minutes or so. He loves the fact that he is injury-free. He

listed those injuries for me. Two snapped tendons in his throwing arm.

A shrunken scapula muscle in his shoulder. Seven months out with a

dodgy Achilles. And a dislocated shoulder, all in the past 4.5 years.

Just three weeks ago he said he woke up pain-free. 125. It's like

makes Bobby George sound as though he's got a clean bill of health.

140. Talk about a rebirth, a renaissance for him as well. A

Third leg. Game on. Tony Eccles all over this from the

very start. He really has hit the ground running. Had plenty of time

to consider, during those injuries, whether he would ever be in a

position to get back on this stage. He's won eight ranking titles,

seven in his first spell with the BDO. Didn't have as much success at

the PDC as you would have expected. He didn't get past the last 16 in

their World Championships. That was in the first year that he

was there. 100. I believe he was beaten by Adrian Lewis back in 2008.

He has been improving, though. Reached the quarterfinals at the

Jersey Classic in November. 100. And he's had a very, very bright

And what about Geert De Vos? He's the seed, the 14th seed, 31 years

of age from Belgium. 140. Belgian who's passionate about his football.

Belgian international. Desperate to at least emulate last year's feat

of reaching the second round at Lakeside. You require 123. This

the fact it's very early in the match. It's comparable with what

anyone has thrown so far. His finishing stats...

Just goes to show, though, it's all about hitting those doubles. Three

period of reintegration, which is what Tony Eccles is currently going

through. There are politics and politics and politics in darts. No

looks for his first leg of the game. Once more, Tony Eccles is gonna

De Vos won his first ranking title in April. He beat Alan Norris in

the final of the German Open. He had been in excellent form in the

spring, because he followed up that success in the German by reaching

the final of the Swiss Open as well. Subsequently got to the semifinals

in the French Open in October. I think Tony West, at this stage last

in the tournament already, you get the sense that until that final,

match-winning dart goes in, there's still a chance from just about any

inconceivable position. How do you avoid self-doubt creeping into your

head and creeping, then, down past the shoulder into your throwing arm,

when you've missed five darts for a two-nil lead in sets, and now

you're two-one down? That's the problem facing Tony

world darts, the Lakeside Country Club, owned by Bob Potter. And the

Bob Potter Fan Club in tonight. Perhaps he's created several mini

Prior to that he had won only one of his last six matches on the

stage. A bit of an up-and-down time at the BDO World Championships. A

first-round loser in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Reached the second round in

2005. Losing to Vincent of the Netherlands. Then he won a couple

of matches in 2007. In fact, in 200, when he lost 5-4 to Mervyn King, he

missed and then took a lead. hand side in this darkened room,

Lisa Ashton says there's a little bit ofagery -- Richie says there's

a little bit of argy-bargy between the two in that game. One of them

stood - Eccles went for a wide on the double oche. Mervyn said, "You

can't stand there. Not surpriseding that Mervyn and

Tony Eccles being involved in a bit of controversy on the oche.
