Day 1 Darts: World Championships - Extra

Welcome to your first instalment in this year's Darts Extra, the nightly

review of the 2014 BDO World Championships. It will start with a

former winner. Martin will free Adams has lifted this title three

times and get out himself locked in a preliminary round match with a

David Cameron. Not that one. The Canadian debutant hoping to mark the

occasion with a huge performance. We'll put this up at the beginning.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are at the home of world darts here at the 2014

BDO World Championships at Lakeside! We now introduce a preliminary round

match and welcome first of all our Canadian regional qualifier, a

former Canadian open champion. Welcome David Cameron!

We now introduce the reigning Belgian goods and Antwerp champion.

Twice a world club singles champion and three times a world Master and

three times the Lakeside world champion. -- World Cup singles

champion. It is Martin Adams! Promotion to the BDO frontbench for

David Cameron. It has come after hard labour. Three victories and a

chance to escape the inclement weather conditions of Nova Scotia.

The first time at the stage for David Cameron. The three-time

champion is here for a record-breaking 21st consecutive

year. He is arcing under 67 match of the World Championships, three

quarters of which he has won. He even has a special shirt embroidered

for the occasion. He did suffer defeat in the first round last year.

12 months on, Wolfie is a different beast. He is back to his own. The

surprise of these two is the 1st-round meeting.

What will you doing in the first week of the new year in 90 nay four?

Martin Adams was making his Lakeside did -- debut. He threw starts in the

state of the first time. That is what David Cameron from Canada is

doing this afternoon. David Cameron admitted that he will get nervous in

the opening exchanges. Bikies says he just has to focus and put his

His first nine round exit in nine years.

back into the leg which is exactly what he didn't want to do. No

outshot for these guys after 12 shots. Della Mackie has lost a lot

he's feeling good finally. As from about August onwards, he has been

rediscovering the form which made him world champion three times. A

for the first leg for Martin Adams. A treble 18 leaves bullseye. -- 124.

A chance for a first leg against the darts for the Canadian. 18 leaves

bullseye. That's done it. 68 to hold the throw. Double 44 Martin Adams.

For the first leg of the match. -- double four for.

They howl the approval. Here at Lakeside. 96.

He has a very impressive 1st-round record here at Lakeside, does

Wolfie. Played 20 and 115 including winning each of the last eight right

to his defeat to Hendrix last year. A number of Lakeside records are not

just longevity. Once hit 16 and one 80s in a match here and still lost

it. A quarterfinal against Chris Mason back in the 90s. -- 180s.

Still waiting for his first maximum in this match so far.

Good darts from David Cameron, down-to-earth initial ready. Adams

is back on 341. He will be back. 42. 81. Dave,

Uruguay 92. Strain at the start. It leaves him with Shanghai 20s if he

comes back. -- you require 92. Martin, you require 120. A single, a

treble and a double. Bogey. -- oh dear.

David Cameron will return to the first to set. Double eight now. The

nerves taking their toll. Now Wolfie can really strike a psychological

blow in this match by hitting two eight. They can not believe the

message. Cameron with another chance. He keeps missing them. He is

in the madhouse. No problems for Wolfie. He hit the 88. 2-0 in this

first set. It goes without saying that it is

always good to settle the nerves and get that first leg on the board.

David Cameron has thrown in at six different double so far and not hit

any. What you think is favourite is? Number ten? Please let us apologise

for the loss of pictures you suffer from at home. Everything Julie

Martin Adams way of the moment. The 20th anniversary since John Hart

became the first and only Canadian to win this World Championship. He

is something of an inspiration. You require 70. 70 for Martin to

take the first set. He will be double 16. No problem at all. Adams

nailed it. The first set going with the darts.

All he has done, David Cameron, is losers of darts he would have

expected to lose, because Adams through first. But, he has missed

seven darts and a double. He is yet to register a leg. Those butterflies

in the stomach will be beating their wings faster and faster. Scoring

through the first nine darts of the leg was superior. We have the first

of the match for Wolfie. Here he goes again. Against the

darts, but already, a 19 advantage, plus fees. Down-to-earth finish with

Cameron stuck on 299. Looking at treble 20. A fraction

away. A big day for Little Richard. The

big day for Wolfie as well, hoping to make it through the round. This

is against the darts. He found his range nicely. Solitary difference

between the two man has been finishing. David Cameron has had

seven darts and a double, and has not hit any. That is an excellent

percentage, for Martin Adams. David Cameron will just start hoping to

win a leg and go from there. He has lost four in a row. If anyone is at

home on that stage, it is Martin Adams. He made his debut, a winning

debut, in 1994, when he reached the quarter-finals. Here he is, 21 years

later. Proving he has sold at it. -- still got it. Dave feeling the

pressure, you sense. All over the place of the moment.

He looks at the bull's-eye here first. Treble 20 would leave it. He

will be back. Two AIDS for a fifth leg in a row.

Two falls. Still, Cameron back on 230. That has been a problem for

him. He is best effort on the board has brought in 81. It finishes with

a solid 44. -- double four. A good start.

To reach leg side, -- Lakeside, David Cameron won the Quebec open

and the Newfoundland open. He was in the last 16 in Vancouver. He has

been around North America picking up points to earn his place on the

stage. He has also played several tournaments in Las Vegas. His eyes

did light up what he was talking about that trip.

This is for a set against the darts and a 2-0 lead. Double 14. No

problem at all. A marked difference to how he was 12 months ago. He

takes a 2-0 lead. Total dominance from the three-time champion. Six

legs out of six. Two sets and two. There is not only his finishing, but

look at his average, the best part of 15 points better than David

Cameron. Very impressive finishing statistics

to back that up. Those seven darts that Cameron missed all came in the

first two legs. Since then he has not had a sniff. You get the feeling

that the Lakeside crowd is feeling sorry for this Canadian debutante.

He has not hit the treble often up, David Cameron. Some trouble with the

rats. No such problems for Wolfie.

Consistent scoring from the three-time world champion. He will

be the first to the finish again. He has taken out 121. He will not do

150, not on this visit. Only 43. How about a ton and 40? Treble 17,

double 18, for a seventh leg in a row. Yes indeed. Cameron may be

struggling, but Martin Adams is starting to flow.

If you take John Part out of the equation, Lakeside has not been a

good place for Canadians. None have made it past the quarter-final stage

exit for John Part. David Cameron has beaten Martin Adams previously

in a World Cup match. Will he get his first 180? Not to be the him at

the moment. -- for him. Still, he will be first to finish in

this leg, David Cameron, a much-needed darter and a double. A

good cover. Can he do it? Not this time. Treble 20. Treble 19, went for

the treble 19, hit the treble seven. This is David Cameron's first darts

at a double since the second leg of the first set. Their riches, his

favourite number, number ten. A long time since David Cameron has

had a round of applause like that. Taking it in magnificent spirit.

Clearly it was a crucial leg to him. He has the guts in the set. He has

to break the throw somewhere along the line.

Cameron fails to take advantage of a missed opportunity and a treble from

Martin Adams. What is he do? The weighs in with 140.

His first maximum. It just puts a bit of pressure on. And now, that

little light at the end of the tunnel. He surely has to take this

out. One darter double top. To hold this throw and move a leg away. He

just takes a moment to compose himself. He knows it is important.

He misses. He only needs the one. Two legs in a

row, having lost the first seven. If he holds here, he has a set. If he

holds here, game on. Last time Martin Adams played an

American, a North American, he lost in round one. Roger Carter beat him.

That was 1997. He has not done much with it. There

are only two David Cameron is. This for the set. A good start.

Bull's-eye. The second time he has misted and again. Can Martin take up

121 to save a set? A shake of the head because he knows he has left

the door open. A couple of errands darts. None of them were close. Four

Mr darts for the set of David Cameron. 88 -- double eight fall

Adams to level the set. The first time of asking. Double 16 now. The

kind of opportunity he cannot give away. Double four? No. His eighth

darter for the set. He finally finds it.

Here we go. The match is now going with the darts again. Camera knows

he is that to win against the darts sometimes. -- camera and.

He hit the 88 and has now won three legs in a row.

It is rarely easy if you are a Martin Adams van. You can see the

checkout statistic has dropped markedly as far as Martin is

concerned. He was up at better than 50% earlier. He has lost the last

three legs. He has missed darts to win in two of those. He is on a

finish, David Cameron. He is back in the trebles. Treble 20, treble 17

and bull. Not even close. A good last start. He needs to hold his

throw. 66 to win a leg against the darts. Nine would leave double 16.

He stops it. One look at it, that was all he needed.

Perhaps significant that time, he did not have time to think about it.

He did not change the rhythm of the plywood all. -- of the flow at all.

All of a sudden, he is not being given an easy ride.

Wayward darts from David Cameron. If he has run deep into the tournament,

he could end up playing his 400 set of darts on the Lakeside says. He

has won 221 up to this point. Forget iron man, he is the tungsten man.

To break back. Treble 18 would leave him the bull's-eye. This is to move

a leg away. Double 12 Martin Adams. A great marker. Short. He only

needed one of them. He breaks back straightaway. You feel he had to do

it. Make no mistake, we have a game on here. David Cameron has the throw

in this leg. Significantly, in the six legs he has had the darts, he

has only held twice. He has broken as much as he has held his own

throw. He started 44 and 58, so Wolfie already we are lead. A very

healthy advantage after six darts apiece. If he does go on to win, it

would make some trivia question, what links Jimi Hendrix to David

Cameron. It was Hendrix who beat Adams in round one last year at

Lakeside. Plenty of Yorkshire folk down here. Garry Thompson from

nearby Silsden in action later. He has done 121. Now, treble 19th

double 12. How about this? He would open trouble term.

He missed with the first darts. He will be frustrated that. He leaves

himself back at 119. One leg away now. He gives double 16 again.

The Wolfie whistles have started again. Straight in with a double 20.

Adams just needs to hold his throw. It sounds simple, doesn't it? Not

when your opponent is the ring maximums like that. -- throwing.

He needed and other treble to leave himself a finish. A great three

darts from Cameron. He will be back to have a look at 96 to save the

match. Look at this, though. A monumental visit to David Cameron.

Double 18. Are those whose last two darts at Lakeside? 58, then add 's

to reach round two. Barry says. He is back. -- that it is. Martin Adams

is through to round one. The reason other former times are

trying to recapture the glory days of the past. She was trying to make

short work of the Dutch hopeful. The first Lady. It is for Schuur. The

blonde. -- first leg. Trina Gulliver still

wants to attempt a world title. She turns up and it is all she thinks

about. Title number ten. She has been beaten in the semifinals in

2012 and 2013. She is very much coming to leg side this year

thinking about the title. In contrast, Tamara Schuur. 34 years of

age, from the Netherlands, and is just thinking about winning the

match. In fact, she is thinking about winning this leg and not much

else at this stage. Her debut on the Lakeside stage and she is

intimidating. It is an unenviable task, facing

Tamara Schuur today. First match on the Lakeside stage against the nine

time when. Seven successive years at the start of the last decade that

Trina Gulliver was the world champion. The four times she has

been beaten, she has lost to the eventual champion everytime.

Struggling to find it trebles at the moment, Tamara Schuur. Trina

Gulliver was the second seed this year.

The only player to have registered a 19 plus match average in the women's

World Championships. Done so on three occasions.

There is sued, Trina Gulliver's wife. We must at this stage say for

Sue's Mum to get well soon. She hasn't been well over Christmas.

Missed the double ten which would have given her the first leg. She

will be back. That was two tends for the first leg of the match.

No matter how much experience you have on this stage, getting the

first leg would be settling. Not the first time that these two

ladies have played against each other. Trina has married these are

before. Maybe back in 2012. Tamara will be delighted now. Just to

settle early nerves. Looked like a nervous start but

nothing about this leg looks nervy. It is a shame about that last dart.

She is not on her finish. Just unlucky without bounce about.

-- with that bounce there. Only cost her three in the end.

Looking at 14 s there. To darts out for Tamara and she will have the

opportunity to take it out and hold the throw. -- two darts.

In the context of this match, you feel that this is important. How

about that? Both of the legs going with the darts so far and pretty

constantly as well. It may be her first appearance at the Lakeside but

Tamara Schuur is ranked 14th in the world. A former semifinalist at the

World Masters. She has won the French Open this year, along with

one of the Lakeside debutant in the final. Rachel Brooks. For the first

time, you have to win for matches to be crowned women's world champion.

In this first round, it is the best of three sets. The first two sets

and then the first to five legs in a set.

See the same faces every year. He then you been drinking for an hour,

looks a bit green already. -- he has only been drinking for an hour.

41. And in deck here for the week no doubt as well. Tamara is putting a

little bit of pressure into the throw. She could have done with that

trouble to exaggerate the pressure. Still life out, 126. Options on the

19th. -- nice out. Way back on 169 which is not a

finish. Still going for the treble 19. Would have left the bullseye

that she will be back. No possible outshot for Trina

Gulliver but she needs to put pressure on that ex- de eight for

Tamara Schuur. -- a on that 68. -- pressure on that 68. Three big darts

here. A double 16. It is a leg against the throw for Tamara Schuur

as she holds he. She is one set to the good. Two darts to the double,

two doubles. Nerves? What nerves. Having said that, a break is only a

break if you hold your own throw, of course.

How about that? A very wayward looking 26 and a very focused

looking 140 to follow. Keeping the pressure on. What does Gulliver

have? ? You can't have enough bobby at

Lakeside, can you? There is only one bobby George. I cannot tell you how

hot that Lee will be in their. She will be cooked by ten o'clock. --

about Lady will be in there. She will be disappointed with that

45. It gives Tamara Schuur what it takes to get to finish. She'll it!

-- take it! Tamara Schuur's average has been superior to Trina Gulliver.

It is the heavy scoring which is doing the damage. She has an

opportunity now. 112 check-out for the first set. A treble 20 would

leave a double 16. Double 16 for the set. Will she be punished? Trina

Gulliver needs this. She needs 116. No finish from there.

Three successive sets. A set to the good. She now has the darts. She

just has to hold the throw. She has beaten a nine time world champion in

straight sets. A very wayward dart followed by two

excellent darts. Excellent response! Trina Gulliver first 140 of the

afternoon. Trina Gulliver has effectively taken

the darts back already. She is playing a little more quickly now.

Trina Gulliver is the first as an attempted check-out and so far the

first to an attempt to finish has made the lake. -- the first to

attempt a finish has made the leg. Treble 15 also would have laid the

top. Just a glimmer for Tamara. Hit the first one. Treble 18. The

bullseye 4164. -- for 164. Steel puts pressure on the 83,

doesn't it? -- still. 17, double 16. For a fourth leg in a

row. Tamara Schuur Mrs double eight. -- she misses it.

The nine is just in. One more shot at it.

She still wins the leg. Well, well, well. This has the makings of a big,

big shock. 13. That is not the usual standard

you expect from Trina Gulliver. Tamara Schuur missed three darts and

a double in that leg but she has been better than Trina Gulliver so

far. It cost her in that second set. She has to break the certain throw

at some stage. She has to stay in this match.

Trina Gulliver was the inaugural women's champion. She has been

coming every year since. She has won the title nine times. She says that

she still thinks that this is the big one when she walks through the

doors at this venue in Surrey. But there is something rather jaded

about her performance this Saturday afternoon.

That dark there is very an freedom -- that dart there it is a very free

gully. 16. Down to we finish. -- a finish.

55. For another leg against the darts

and having close to 164 in the last leg, Katrina -- Trina Gulliver knows

she is under pressure. Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant. A 147 Check

out and she is won away from the darts eliminating a well timed --

and nine time world champion. We have been focusing on Trina Gulliver

perhaps we should focus on Tamara Schuur and her sensational darts. A

checkout at 147. Nerveless on the Lakeside stage on her debut. Every

time she throws a slightly wayward dart, she comes back with two or

three excellent darts. One leg away from beating the nine

time champion in the first round. She has never lost before the

semifinals, Trina Gulliver. She is potentially six darts away

from going home before the tournament has even got going.

If anybody can deal with the pressure, you would imagine that

Trina Gulliver will be able to. Looking very pensive.

Needs at least 140, you feel here. Only 81. Once again, it is six darts

for the win. For Tamara Schuur. The last dart is the hardest.

His brother was in the tournament last year. He will be in later in

the week. This is it for Tamara Schuur. Can't do it now. She knows

that your have another crack. -- that she will have another crack.

She only needs a 70. What pressure can Trina Gulliver apply? Not enough

pressure. How about this, then? To knock out

the nine time champion in the first round. She needs to and she gets it!

An enormous upset at the first afternoon at Lakeside. Trina

Gulliver has been beating in round one and beat in by a debutante from

the Netherlands, Tamara Schuur, ladies and gentlemen. Trina Gulliver

is out! Yorkshire's Rachel Brooks was also a

debutante hoping to take inspiration as she took on Denmark's experienced

Ann Louise Peters. Once again, your commentators are Jim Proudfoot and

Alexander. Two Lakeside debutant in first round

action. Here on the biggest stage in world darts. Ann Louise Peters from

Denmark against the fifth seed Rachel Brooks who has been there or

thereabouts in every tournament in every tournament she has entered in

the past 12 months. A 50 -year-old from Yorkshire up

against a 38 -year-old from Denmark. It is a first Lakeside appearance

for Ann Louise Peters but she returned to the BDO last year,

ranked 100 and is second in the rankings but that is primarily

because she hasn't played in that many tournament since her return.

She qualified through the play-offs. Ann Louise Peters is a

former Danish women's International. She won the recent Danish

championship as well. The fourth time she won the event.

Up against Rachel Brooks from Doncaster.

Rachel Brooks recently lost in the finals at the World Masters in the

British Open. 105! She was runner-up in the Northern Ireland and French

opens. She won in Turkey and in Finland which is why she is the

fifth seed. She needs to score here. 26. She has yet to hit a treble.

That is why it is Ann Louise Peters who is first on the finish. 60!

There is that first treble. Finally, I treble. And another on

the wrong side of the line. -- a treble. 94 then for Ann Louise

Peters. 54. Eight double top when she comes back and she will be back.

Brooks needs 840 and she has to put some pressure on the double top.

There is one of them. Six darts if she needs them. A

double tender for the first leg of the match. Snatched at it.

Starting to find the treble, Rachel Brooks. That Tony Peters on the left

with a moustache. And there is also Rachel's partner.

It's always worth watching then playing. -- worse. She will start

with a treble 19. No she won't. She has hit a single five. She can't now

finish. 35. Six missed darts in the double

so far for Ann Louise Peters. Three more in hand and she only needs the

one. Hits the double five and the first leg goes to Denmark's Ann

Louise Peters. Game on. Understandably, a nerdy first leg.

From both players. -- nervy. Both were capable of a lot more than

that. It doesn't matter how much

experience you have. You talk about the fantastic season which Rachel

Brooks has had. The final of the World Masters in Hull, one of five

tournaments in which a got to the final. When you come to the Lakeside

for the first time, such an iconic venue, it is understandable that she

takes a little time to settle down. That is the case with both of the

ladies here. Now the troubles start to come. -- trebles.

101! To more therefore Ann Louise Peters. -- two more there for. In

this round, it is the best of three sets. It is the best of five legs in

every set. If you make a slow start, not much time to turn things around.

43. Rachel is still waiting for her first time plus visit at this point.

Ann Louise Peters has had three. -- first tonne plus visit.

100! That is her first tonne. Ann Louise Peters needs another 60, make

that 137 when she comes back. Rachel Brooks will hope for either one

tonne or 140. 100! Can't be done now. 26. Ann

Louise Peters started the lake well. In her last three visits, she has

done well. The level this first set at one leg each, treble 20, double

ten or two double tops if she prefers, she has hit treble one.

Whichever she feels more comfortable with... The 19 would have left a

double ten. 18 now. It will leave a double top if and when she comes

back. Treble 17 is what she was looking for. There is a chance to

level it in the first set. She is composing herself. This is her first

darts at a double. Hywel is she feeling on her doubles?

That is a good marker. Double ten. No. Ann Louise Peters, you require

60. A single 24 double top. There was a chance offer a leg against the

darts and a two legged leader but will she be punished by Rachel

Brooks? She is looking at 55. -- double five. On the third leg, Ann

Louise Peters to three first. It is a hard to watch. It is rough on the

friends and family. 85. Good fun for everyone else,

though. It is the missed doubles adding to the tension and intensity.

One leg apiece. In the first set. 100!

Chile has plenty of experience behind her. -- Julie. Rachel is

hitting the trebles with increasing regularity now. Rachel Brookes is

unhurried. She was disappointed with that last start, as you can see.

This has gone and underwear -- Anna Louise's way. Followed by Rachel.

Treble 20. Treble 17 would have hit the old

Anna Louise is looking at the treble 16. Get the single. Anna Louise

Peters leads. The pressure is on Rachel Brookes.

She has to hold her throne to stay in the 1st set. It's not far away.

None of them have found the red bit. Unlucky. 60 points on the

floor. Far fewer bounce outs this year than last. They have changed

the boards. The World Masters in Hull is not

always a barometer of form in terms of what happens

in the Lakeside. Certainly 1 of the most consistent players, Rachel. She

has never won here. She comes here as top seed more often than not. A

good time for 140 from Rachel Brookes. Her best result was a

couple of years ago, when she was runnerup. It is 1 of those annoying

numbers that can't be taken out with 3 darts. This is all about the 19s.

She needs 4 or 6 of them. Another one for a double 19. Not this time.

Double top for Anna Louise Peters. The first leg of the darts gives her

the first set. She has been deadly around the double. She took one,

three, and four. Tony is watching on pensively. A

decent start with two 100s. Rene is equally pensive. Winning the darts.

-- willing. Down to 120 after 12 darts. This has

been a good leg for Rachel. Shanghai 20s for the first leg of this second

set. She will need two treble 20s to take this out. There is one of

them. Pressure to get the 80. What a time to find a 140. 79 left. She

can't now finish. She has to move two legs away. There it is. She

missed eight darts in the first leg, but she hasn't missed one

since. That is a leg against the throw. She

has to hold her throw in the second set free to-0 victory. -- for a 2-0

victory. Where has the scoring gone? 45, 28.

Not what she wanted, having won that leg. Can Rachel Brookes take

advantage? She can. She really can. More than 100 ahead, Rachel

Brookes. This is better from Anna Louise. She went to get a drink of

water. She seems to have rediscovered her range. She still

has a lot of work to do to hold her throw. I don't know why she switched

to 18s there. She hasn't left herself a finish. Anna Louise has,

of course. What can we see? Will this be the

big one on day one? It doesn't look like it.

Anna-Louise, you require 126. A good start. She needs another one of

those. Or at least a bullseye. Good recovery. Rachel, you require 110.

She could do this, Rachel Brookes. 18s here, double 18. Oh you, what a

shame. She really needed that. Here is a big dart. Last chance. No

score. How did she do this? She needs this now. Straight in. Third

leg. That is the first leg that Rachel has won. Close to a one-10

checkout. I think she will look at the fact

that her scoring has improved. There is still room for improvement. Look

at how that darter went off to the side. -- dart. Even if she hit big

20. Psychologically, that was important. Over 100. Her seventh of

the match. Rachel Brookes is the favourite to win this leg. She is

nine behind, but with the throw. She needs a treble to finish. She finds

it. Anna Louise, you require 156. She

had a treble start. It wasn't forthcoming. A treble 20 is Rachel

's number one priority. She is the favourite from here. She finds the

20s. She is having a think. 6040 left. -- 64. She still has the

bullseye left. Okay. Do it that way. Anna Louise require 118. She

hit the treble 20 with no trouble. Rachel

is in the mad house here. She needs to make 13s. She missed the big

three. Rachel requires two. She can go for it with this dart. One for

double six. Double four, then. Rachel requires two. Rachel is

getting closer. Like she was in the last visit. Still no cigar. Double

four to Peters. This is to move a leg away. She gets it. Fourth leg,

Anna Louise to throw first. All of the leaks in the set have gone

away. -- legs. There is that errant dart. We have talked about Rachel

Brookes, but Peters is struggling with the finish line in sight. Great

last dart. Here we go. There is another. With

Rachel having hit 41 and 26, that was a leg she needed to save the

match. I wonder if she is still thinking about all those missed

darts. You have already touched upon it,

but that is the problem with the short form game. That is what the

ladies are playing right now. It exaggerates any mistakes. She needed

that. It is best of three all the way to the final. Then it will be

best of five. There have been some momentum swings, but not here. There

is some way to go for Anna-Louise to win her first match on the Lakeside.

This is for the match. Treble 19. Double 16 as she comes back. I

remind you, gentlemen, that you are at the Lakeside. Some of the crowd

are getting rowdy here as we get to the end of the evening. This might
