Day 6 Darts: World Championships - Extra

Good evening. With four days to go here at Lakeside, you can sense the

tension rising as the men continue their battle for the quarterfinals

and the women go toe to toe for a place in the semis. What a story in

our first match of the evening. Trina Gulliver, the very first

women's world champion, against the defending champion Lisa Ashton. So

much respect between the two, but only room for one in the last four.

Here are your commentators, John Rollins and Vassos Alexander.

Lisa has got the darts and she will be wanting to make a positive start.

And she makes a steady 100. She has been in tremendous form over

the last couple of years. Champion over the last couple of years and

currently the holder of numerous titles. Swept all before her last

year. G1 3-1 in the final. Trina Gulliver, so much success in years

gone by -- she won 3-1. Nine times champion. Invincibles from

2001-2007. But that was then and this is now -- invincibles from.

Trina Gulliver, a big outsider, against Lisa, who is such a good

player, and so dominant at the top of the women's game. Since winning

the world title for the second time last year she reached 12 finals in

2015 and she won nine of them. Not a bad record, is it? Taking her

ranking titles to fall to 18. Mind you, still a way to go to match

Trina's 82. She had a much quieter season. Runner-up in the Northern

Ireland open where she lost to Dita Hoeben but apart from that, no for

Trina and definitely no trophies -- Peter -- Dita Hedman.

She is nicely poised here to hold her throw. Just tops remaining.

She can't find it, but Gulliver's a long way back. No finish of course

on 173. Now 46 years old, Trina. The older player by one year.

Double 10 for Lisa to take the opening leg. Not often you see her

in this five doubles in a row. Slightly sticky start. Gulliver,

114. She is looking for treble 20 here. Good dark. 14 leaves double

tops. Oh, dear, she has missed the big 14 and got 11 instead.

Opportunity goes begging -- good dark. Nobody likes being in the

madhouse, double 1. Including Lisa Ashton it would seem. Now tops for a

break of growth for Trina Gulliver -- break of throw. Double 10.

Concentration. She needs this one. That is a good dark. World, Trina

Gulliver. First break of throw. Eight Mr doubles from the Lisa

Ashton. You might be surprised to hear that Lisa is seeded at Lakeside

for the first time. Is that right? Even when she came back as defending

champion last year she was unseeded. Certainly wasn't an seeded in my

mind. She threw brilliantly. -- unseeded.

How Ashton would like to break straight back. Good leg so far. 140

and 100. Trina yet to trouble the treble.

If Trina did win this it would be a big upset.

It's been a big old few months in the Lisa Ashton household. Perhaps

we'll let you know what happened in the next leg, because she's already

on a finish for a 12 dart leg. Eight double 5 would have left double 18.

Good effort. -- a double 5. Lisa Ashton, 45 years

old. Became a grandma not too long ago.

OK, double tops. Another missed double. A ninth and a 10th and an

11. 143 for Gulliver. It's a big ask. 15 darts already to this point

and that is a good first dart. Treble 17 would give her the

opportunity. She's only just missed it. She can't keep missing them, can

she? She will. Trina will be back. 46 then for 2-0. Ashton being undone

by her doubles. 13 misses now. Tops for Gulliver to go 2-0 up. Good from

Trina. I mean, they are the best of friends, Trina and Lisa. And perhaps

you're thinking, maybe Lisa's problem is that she's too nice.

Can't finish it off against her good friend, Trina Gulliver, on the big

stage. Well, they met at this stage last year and Lisa won 2-0. She's

just missed 13 doubles in a row. Lisa's daughter, Danielle, watching

on, hoping that mum starts to hit form.

NEL is a county player, as indeed is her sister, Lindsay.

Didn't manage a maximum, Trina, in her first-round match -- come on! .

In fact, you know the last time Trina Gulliver hit a maximum on the

Lakeside stage was in 2012. 14. This is for the set. Just the wrong

side of the wire. Could do with a treble 20 here.

Tends for Ashton to get into the match.

Still she wants one. -- tens. 16 Mr doubles. Yet to get one. I don't

believe it. -- missed doubles. This is where the nine at the last visit

comes back to haunt her a little. She can't now take out 152. Good

cover on the 19s. But surely now. Double 5.

And still she can't find it. That is 19 Mr doubles. This isn't a

debutant, this is the defending champion. This is the nine time

champion for the set. Double 10 for the third leg in a row. Trina takes

the first set against a Lisa Ashton. Are we about to see a big upset? And

it would be one, wouldn't it? It would be huge.

The only thing wrong with least Ashton's starts really is the

doubles. Zero out of 19 is stretching credibility -- Lisa

Ashton's darts. Lisa recently becoming a grandma. I

can tell you that Danielle was in the audience watching. Not so sister

Lindsey, though. Amelia Rose, there she is, nine weeks ago she was born.

How sweet is that? Lovely that she has asked Trina to

be godmother as well, isn't it? I tell you what, all those missed

doubles seem to be playing Trina Gulliver into some sort of form

here. She is first to a finish. And a good one. The best I have seen

Trina throw for a while this. That's the story of the match so far. Zero

from 19. Tops. And again. That was a chance going begging.

Will it be punished? She has missed 19 so treble 18 leaves double 16.

Can't now finished, another chance for Trina 2-hit double tops. She

hasn't hit double tops yet. The three legs she has one has been on

double 10. -- 2-hit. Lisa Ashton is not at the races for her incredibly

high standards. And Trina Gulliver, perhaps it's a bit of a cliche to

say rolling back the years, but she's actually playing better than

I've seen her play for some time. A few years ago they met in the

quarterfinals. They did last year as well and Lisa won. But in 2009,

Trina was top seed and she beat Lisa 2-0. She's won four legs in a row so

far, Trina, and she will keep winning legs unless Lisa starts

hitting doubles. This isn't a debutant we are talking about, John.

No, we are talking about the second set here and Trina Gulliver is in

with a very good chance of winning this match now. Froze under pressure

again. The winner of this looking to book a

place in the semifinal against either Aileen de

Graaf or... Anchors ill stroke lead Dobromyslova on Saturday evening.

That seems a long time ago, doesn't it? It is a long time ago and I

don't know if that is Lisa's problem here, she hasn't played since

Saturday afternoon. She is on a potential two dart check out here.

Gulliver trying to hang in here, can't find the treble. To level up

this second set. That is a nice leave. 141. This would be a heck of

a checkout if she can find this. No, can't be done now. I wonder, if Lisa

finds a double whether it will transform this match. It should

settle her down because this surely can't go on for much longer. Zero

out of 19. How long has that been coming, she asks.

Trina with the darts, though. She only has to hold twice.

Some Hawaiian style shirts there. I heard a whisper Wayne Mardle was

going to be in the audience tonight. I wonder if we will be seeing him at

some stage. I think he is around. He could have been camouflaged in that

last shot. Andy Fordham was talking about playing another visit as

Chewbacca -- paying. She really is struggling, Lisa

Ashton. Really wants to leave a finish. It's

kind of spread to the rest of her game, Lisa. She's clearly not

throwing doubles particularly well but she's not hit the numbers like

she can. She averaged over 90 against Trina

at this stage last year, Lisa Ashton.

This time the doubles affected but she's down on 76.

Leezer on 120, which is a lovely finish. Shanghai on the twenties.

Trina can't now finish. -- Lisa. Just raid right onto the treble 1. A

happy top of the game Lisa Ashton would take this one out. -- just

strayed. Not quite there today. Gulliver now

for a 2-1 lead. 54. Tops. One from seven on double tops. Make it eight.

Treble 13 for double tops. Can't now finish. Usually on a tea you are

assured at least one dart at a double. Key leg this one -- on 80.

These are big darts. She has bussed it. Ashton now to take the lead, on

for a break. Here she goes for tops. Oh, no. Back to the double 10

for Trina. She hit this three times to win the first set. Single one,

double 2. Must hit this to Hammer home her advantage. Tops for Ashton

for the break of throw. She is a set down. She has missed by a distance.

Tens now. One from 25 on the doubles for Lisa

Ashton. 22 for Trina Gulliver. Oh, dear Ashton, a couple of tens now.

-- double 2. She has made a mess of it. She has missed seven in a row to

win this leg. Trina Gulliver has had 33 darts in

this leg. Ashton again for double. Double 5. She's got it. That is a

break. Dani Alves, her daughter, bellowing her in

That was a 32 dart leg that, wasn't it? I think it's slightly negates

the advantage of throwing first, doesn't it? -- it's slightly. -- it

slightly. The Pennington club. She's having a good time, isn't she?

There is Ann-Marie Peters. She got a good win earlier on, didn't she? She

did. A really good win. What a match for McGeeney against

Scott Mitchell earlier. This one could go all the way as well. Could

take some time as well. Trina did go to a sudden-death leg in her first

round match against the Bateman. Both players struggled on that

occasion and both players are struggling today. Trina's finishing

actually was pretty good. A much-needed high school. That was

until she missed those ten darts to win those last leg, that last leg --

high score. Gulliver needing to break the throw to keep this set

alive. Well, she took out 156 in the first

round last year against Peter Hedman. -- Peter Hedman. Looking at

the top of the board. Treble 19 would leave double 19. For the leg.

Double tops. She hasn't hit it yet, she's had plenty of those at it. Now

she has. And the top seed back on level terms -- plenty of goes.

That's the set and it is 1-1. Into a deciding set. If it gets to

2-2 here then it is sudden-death. Then they bully up for the advantage

of throwing first and whoever wins that leg wins. Come on, Trina. Your

first maximum in four years. There it is. On the Lakeside stage that

is. That is her 55th 180 in the World Championship, but her first

instrument 12. And in the context of the match, a great start. -- her

first since 2012. That's four of them. Not a bad start. A steady 100.

Well played. This is more like it. This is the Trina of old. She would

dearly love to be a double figures world champion. She has won nine but

the last of them in 2011. A big cushion in this leg. May be a bit

unlucky that one. Good last -- missed the last

141 for a break of throw at the start of the deciding set. Treble

19. She went for the 15. It does not matter, she will be back.

It needs to start hitting doubles again.

It is a big check out for Ashton. Gulliver in all probability will get

another go, and does. Cannot afford to miss this. 13 misses in a row.

Finally. And back in front. The defending champion, Lisa Ashton,

is behind and under pressure. If it does go all the way to a deciding

leg, you would probably have to fancy Gulliver. She has one on each

occasion. This included two finals. She is looking really purposeful.

Lisa Ashton again fails to find the trouble that matters.

Gulliver is such an important figure in the development of the sport in

this country. Awarded for her services to sport. I am very proud

to have received it. 95. The first ever year. Lakeside

2001. There were doubts as whether the women's World Championship was

worth staging on the Lakeside stage. That's 95 average silenced them all.

Now there are none. Cannot finish now. That was good.

150. Gulliver is in a good position. There is no check out. She has hit

this double four times. I would expect single 15 two tops. Here we

go. Three doubles out of 33. She is having one of those days. Again, at

double ten. And now at 55 again. There is. We are on the brink. Of a

major upset. It seems odd when we are talking about the nine time

champion. But the way Lisa Ashton has been throwing, you expect it.

Lisa Ashton was 2-1 on. That was to win the tournament, never mind the

match. If Ashton goes out, that really does throw it wide open. I

tell you what, that is looking ever more likely. She has missed 30 darts

at a double. That keeps her in with a shout. Gritting her teeth, in no

mood to be denied. If she goes out, perhaps she will be the new

favourite. Only 43 from Gulliver. This would make a huge checkout, the

best she has ever had at these championships. Lisa Ashton with the

throw. Should be able to close this one out. Should, but will she? Just

cannot get a double. It is almost painful to watch when you know how

well she can throw. She really wanted to get the big 19. Here we

go. Two fives. Another chance. Looking down the bottom. Double 16.

Double 16 for Gulliver. Those were her first at double 16 all match.

Madhouse for Lisa Ashton. This is her 40th at a double. She has only

had three of them. She hangs on. Now Gulliver with the darts to throw for

victory. She had a chance and did not get it. They are best mates, but

there is no chatting. There is business. If we sat Ashton gets the

lake, we are into sudden death. Did well to thread that. Treble 19. Got

it. Nobody is taking their eyes off it. They would both admit that. Six

from 33 on the doubles. Three of those she missed. If she wins and

takes the match. Treble 20. Another chance to win it. To keep the match

alive. Her daughter can hardly bear to watch. So, for the match, Ashton

-- Gulliver the nine times champion. 64. She will be looking for 16 and

eight. To send it to sudden death. She has missed seven for it.

Gulliver. Nine times champion. Causes a major upset. It was

exciting. Another semi-final. Now to an all Dutch affair. De Graff

had never made it to the finals, but neither had her compatriot. She was

riding high after knocking out the three-time world champion in the

first round. In the first round. Stage. A bit of a bonus, I suspect.

Just to be here. Opponent had all sorts of trouble hitting the doubles

in that first-round match. Mr almost 40. What a start! Averaged 82.

She is in the mood. Actually did not get here. She was playing in another

retirement. A close permanent. For men and women competing together in

the Netherlands. She won it with the loss of just one lake. In that

lake, she missed nine darts. The first look at the finish is for De

Graff. It is the big one. It is a treble. 18. Treble 20. We will be

happening with an errant five. As bad as the first two darts work, the

last was good. It might be academic. De Graff lines up 80. Treble 19 four

double ten. This is for a hold of throw. Another go at double ten. Has

never been beyond the quarter-finals. Especially given the

carnage that is the women's draw at the moment. Many of the top seeds

are out. Was not able to build a good score. The first 22 sets

through to the quarter-finals. Through to the semifinals. A bit

crowded again tonight. That is a friend of De Graff's watching early.

How much did she take out? Not a lot at the moment.

I guess the best you could say is it is a finish. 164. A couple of treble

19 is. That just goes off the barrel. Treble 19 four double 16.

Was not far away. Her last match went to a sudden

death lake. -- leg. De Graff's opener was on Sunday. Both players

have had time to ponder this. 100. Some of the crowd still making their

way in. Terrific attire. She did it won on Saturday. 142. Zulstra well

poised, but this could be interesting.

To close out the first set. Oh dear. That is eight of them gone. 120. The

whitewash of a first set. They call this the number one cabaret venue in

Britain, the Lakeside country club. That first set was against the darts

for the fourth seed, who could witness the match just by holding

throw. If only it were that easy. Lisa Ashton, before this match

against Gulliver, was tipped on favourite for the title. Before a

dart was thrown in the quarter-finals, that is how fancy

she was to make it three in a row. Whoever wins this has a sniff of a

chance. That is going to help cut into the deficit. 123. 18 and tops.
