Day 5 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Hello, welcome to highlights. The BDO 2016 world darts championships,

the men and women. Before we get the action, let's have a look at what

happened in the afternoon. He is drawing this well, Jeff Smith.

I don't think he expects to miss at the moment. He says he is more

nervous doing interviews that he is playing darts. Where he will get the

hang of that if he keeps producing decent performances on the big

stage, because there will be a lot of media interest in him. He does

like to keep himself to himself. A lot of the players who have been

playing Bill had to be hotel bar. Jeff tend to take himself off to

bed. When he is practising he'd tuck himself into the corner, rather than

staying in amongst the masses. -- he tucks himself. It's a great

privilege to be able to go into the practice bar and see the

differences. Those with the headphones in, listening to music,

those chatting to make and having a laugh and others having a quiet

moment out the back. Setting up another finish. Against the throw.

You can take the second set with his next visit, requiring 130. Dawson

isn't really pressurising it. He hasn't looked like winning on, Brian

Dawson. -- winning one. We will have another chance, because Dawson on no

finish. A break at the end of this set. 72,

can he take it out? Trouble for 66 four Jeff Smith. He has missed one!

He won't miss two! A great start! 2-0 he kneels Bell leads. -- he

leads. Two down. This was the point that Dawson woke

up against his opponent. The 15th seed needs a big start to set number

three. Jeff Smith with the darts. Two sets to the good. Statistics

from the two sets, you can see Jeff Smith really scoring heavily in the

second set. A couple of dodgy darts from Dawson. His checkouts have been

outstanding. Six out of ten spells of 60%.

Already clear is the silencer in a set number three with the darts and

a two set by far. -- buffer. He is playing really well again, taking

off where he left Martin Adams. His match averages about 92.5. He has

been in pretty much every session. Disappointed of course to be knocked

out and fall at the first hurdle. Double 18. He missed one!

Double nine now. Jeff Smith. To hold his throne. A really good double.

Dangerous days for Dawson. Hasn't won anything on his own throw

yet. We don't care how it comes, or he

won't care, I should say. That's better. It is all about the

Canadian. He hasn't had a 180 in the match yet. A slightly subdued crowd.

Maybe. They want to see a contest. Friends of yours? Not yet. The

evening is young! Yes, they spent a lot -- I spend a lot of my student

life wasting time on the Nintendo 64. Other consoles are available...

Dawson is on the finish at last. 154.

There he is, our mate who broke off from the line.

Tops now. He has got it. Into the match at last. Here I go, he says to

his friends and family. Dawson has been dawdling. Will that give him a

bit of spark? At this point it is where he started to get into his

stride last night. Can he do the same again? He has got the real

hunger. The scrapper's reputation. He never knows when he never knows

when he keeps battling until the end. Smith has seven legs to his

name. Dawson just the one. Larry Butler got on the wrong end of

Glenn Durrant earlier on and he was given a thumping. That's the

fullness of the round so far. He got absolutely battered the day. --

today. Smith is placed on 66 to hold his

is a Bradford Bulls Van? I have just gone off him a little bit. He was an

original Bradford fan. Came from that neck of the woods. Someone made

Then again, I could make my own cup of tea... Meanwhile... Dawson with

the darts and a lead. Smith has this.

A big crowd here tonight. Seats. A great atmosphere. Absolutely love

coming to the Lakeside. Plenty of liquid refreshment. I do believe

that the boss of the tea watching on there. -- BT watching on.

96 from Dawson. Simon Crean. There he is. The man in

charge of BT Sport. Double 16, meanwhile. Smith, this is for the

set. He has been taking this sort of finish. Double 18. Clinical! It is

now 3-0. Smith is not giving him a sniff. He is averaging close to 93.

60% check out rate when he is getting his opportunities and he is

taking them. Needs a fume or of those. -- a few.

Not happening for him. Does he still have the belief?

Smith not capitalising. This is more like it. First off the match!

That's got the crowd going! They want to see this go the distance! As

much as they love Jeff Smith. They want to see Ryan Dawson do that if

you more times. No finish. -- Brian Dawson.

Suddenly, Smith cannot find the treble. 91 for Dawson. Brilliant.

Double ten. Dawson can go ahead in this fourth

set. Five. Two of ten on the doubles now. Smith is still up on 60%. Nine

of 15. The average north of 190 as well. Dawson is just starting to

come alive. The tale is starting to wag. He is talking to himself, come

on, come on. Good stuff. Concentration on his face.

There is no quitting Brian Dawson. He has got a chance of going to-0

up. It looks like he fancies the fight as well. This is more like it.

Nine diets to 104. -- diets with Mac darts. This can be rescued.

Smith on 170. A possible checkout. Mitchell had a 161. The fourth set.

Sneaks it then. And he is starting to sneak back. Just needs another

leggy mouth of the set. -- leg now for the. Both of these players

knocked out last year by Scotty Mitchell, the champion. Dawson in

the quarters. Smith in the semis. Mitchell is on the same side of the

draw as these two in theory. There could be facing him in the

semi-final. A tricky match coming up tomorrow. Wesley had a victory

earlier on against Jim Williams. 4-3. He will be facing Jamie Hughes.

He is in the middle of the picture. No, not the person waving. The

person that the little smile on the end in the mirror.

Filling it up. The second maximum. Not on a finish. But at least it

gets contract. We must do that, but it was a bull 's eye. -- Mr that.

81. For Smith. 16 leaves a bull. Treble 20. Trouble 18 leaves a shot

at tops. Nine, then. To pull a leg back. Seven now. He sees the amusing

side of it. For his first set of the match, two darts at double top.

Dawson is up and running. They are getting on now. Dawson is into it.

His first of the match. The crowd celebrates.

He could not, could he? This would be some fight back. The opening leg

of the fifth set, Smith can clinch the match with this set.

Dawson is matching him blow for blow now. I'm lucky. -- unlucky. Nicely

positioned, Brian Dawson. But here is to have Smith with a 180. -- is

Smith. It leaves him on 24 now, Smith. He

is coming back with double 12 to take out this. Finishing Brilliant.

The guns can be agonising to watch when players start to struggle with

their doubles. -- the darts. Looking for his third maximum. This is more

like the awesome Dawson. Ken Smith get rattled. -- can Smith. That is

Brian Dawson's sister, Karen. It gives us all this information? I do

not know everybody in the audience. Dawson with the gods. -- darts. Down

from 19. That is nicely placed. Working the

20s for another opportunity to draw the set. Treble 20 would leave

double ten. That is nicely placed. Smith, a big ask. A good opening.

Nails the second. 1-1. That would suit Smith. He continues to go. A

lovely cover shot on treble 17. Right in the middle of the treble

from Smith. Still maintaining that average just shy of 93. Not an

exceptional average, but a decent one. He has got into it now. It is

all too late. We have not seen one of these yet. Are we going to see

one now? Could not have been closer. The supporters are starting to call

his name. 25 for Smith to be 2-1 ahead. Dawson is not on the finish.

The urgency was not really there. He knew that Dawson was nowhere near. A

slightly more focused approach as he goes looking for 22. -- double two.

There it is. He is one leg away from winning the match. You have got to

produce now, Brian. Or it is all over. That is a good start. Coming

down the board. Interesting how he chooses 17 for his cover shot,

rather than 19, which most players favour. Then again, straight at the

treble 17. That could apply some real pressure.

This is a must take for Dawson, or the is all over. -- or the game is

all over. Dawson first to refinish, 118 awaits. Look at this for

pressure from Smith. He is poised on 76. A straightforward checkout.

Dawson can only watch and hope. 76, treble 20 he is aiming for. Double

18 for the match. 78 to stay alive. There it is. Smith, the Queen guy

from Canada, does it again. -- cleaner. The crowd are really

starting to warm to him. He moves into the quarter-finals, winning

this by 4-1. This is once again turning into a

great story. The big games keep coming and the bigger names keep

falling to you. I am lucky to be here. I have got a lot of crowd

support. That is the first time there have been calling my name,

which is incredible. As long as I keep pushing ahead, get doubles,

that is my goal for the weekend. How much confidence did you bring into

this match from the fact that you were so comprehensively on top? My

finishing has been great and I know that. It was not quite so much

against Brian, but he struggled a little bit for him. He is usually a

much better player than that. The crowd set off that. It was great.

You are now one of the favourites for the title. Are you comfortable

with that? Before I started this tournament, I felt I was one of the

favourites. It all comes down to me. If I believe in myself, I can do it.

Many congratulations, and good luck for the quarter-finals. Thank you so

much. The type of person you would want to buy a beer. Also through is

this man. The final second-round match of the evening session: In

this one he did take the first set. The second went into the deciding

leg, which we will see now. Trying to get himself going. There

is a break after this leg of darts. Jamie will be thinking, if I can

pull something out of the bag, this could go 1-1 and start again. You

hardly need me to tell you that this is an important leg. 2-0 and 1-1 in

a race to four. A very different set of scorelines. Just while Jamie

Hughes was throwing, Razma just crouched down onto his haunches. I

do not know why he did that. Not the first time he has done that. He

needed that final night. OK then, Razma, over to you. 146 for a two

set lead. Jamie Hughes back up to the 120. He needed that. This is for

a two set lead. 17 on this one. There is one of them. Neither the

second. Very crucial moment in this match. Coming right up. He has given

himself a chance. That is a terrific first. What a chance for Jamie

Hughes. This to pull level at 1-1. One at double six. It looked as

though Jamie Hughes was suffering the blues, but he pulled it out. And

we go to the break level at 1-1. From there, he went 3-1 in a race to

four sets. We will be joined them at the beginning of the fifth. One more

set away from a place in the quarter-finals. It is lovely up on

stage. Acknowledging the successes. This was at the end of that fourth

set. A lot of respect. He was back on his haunches again. Taking stock

of a 3-1 deficit. Razma had three darts in his hand and 40 left on the

scoresheet. The way he was finishing, he would have put the

mortgage on him. 130, treble 20 would leave one on the board. A

great last shot. It is just not happening for him. Two eighteens for

Jamie Hughes. And the fourth seed is starting to flex his muscles. Second

leg in a row, we have begun publicly. -- perfectly. 83. He knows

quite rightly it is now or never, Razma. The first to four. Having

taken the opener. Could have been 2-0 up. Let us look at the

finishing, set by set. Razma continues to struggle. But if you

want real struggles, Razma insect -- in set three was two from 15.

Including 12 misses in a row. He has got a healthy advantage here,

though. Jamie not doing much to change that. She might go treble 14,

let us have a look. It is not happening for him. One out of 12. It

is just not happening, is it? Some easy in the last round, so difficult

in this round. The double beds have not gotten smaller. A great start,

treble 19 four double 12. A great effort. I thought he would get that.

He is going to go straight for the 55. Eight Mrs in a row before that

double five. And only 40 from Jamie Hughes throwing first. He just needs

to hold this twice. And he is through to the quarter-finals. But

he will not do that with many more visits like that 40. He has slowed

down again. Neither of these two have tasted a lakeside

quarter-final. I know you like keeping notes about these things,

but we are halfway through the tournament and we have had 18,850

darts thrown at Lakeside this year. That is quite a tally chart. I'd do

very little else and I do not get out much. It has not been a vintage

late for either. Last year Jamie Hughes lost in the second round.

Nearly got here twice before. It was a bit controversial. None of that

will be going through his mind right now. 24 another crack at bull's-eye.

He just flicked the wire. Razma will not be happening. A big moment, a

big opportunity to break the throw. Needs a treble, does not get it. 4-1

lead and to move within one leg of a place in the quarter-finals. And

that voice you can hear is that of Jamie's wife, Jane. What a chance

for Jamie Hughes. Razma needs to hold, to stay in this year's

championship. And only 22. That is not a great deal better. More than

twice as good. Needs to find the treble. It is deserting him at the

moment. A big visit could do some damage. He meant those last two,

didn't he? He threw his shoulder into those like a forward in a rugby

tackle. I sort of pity the board. Have some of that, he says. He must

hold, or he is out. Not a classic from either. Razma with no real

advantage. Finally a treble from 18. Wesley awaits the winner. He has

been watching tonight. Still very much a student of the game. Above

all a huge fan of darts. This is for the match for Jamie Hughes, the

fourth seed. A couple of times he has done this. Treble 15 for tops.

Treble 18 and Razma. This would be some way to extend the match. It is

there are most Razma can take this out. -- unless. A bull's-eye to stay

in the world championship. The crowd wanted to see this one land.

Bull's-eye could very well be his last art. -- last. The fourth seed

will taste a lakeside quarter-final for the very first time. Hughes will

cruise into the last eight. Jamie draped proudly in the Black

Country flag. You are through to your first-ever lakeside

quarter-final. But yet again, you are not happy with the quality of

performance. I am a much better player than that. I am not the

number four seed for nothing. Last year I was the fourth best player in

the BDO. There must be that many people at home watching the way I

have played, being disappointed. I am frustrated more than anything.

You have got to be pleased that you into the last eight of World

Championship. I feel like all my Christmases have come at once. You

would not expect to be in the quarter-final of the world

championship playing the way I am. Hopefully I can put it right. Let us

look ahead to that match. Wesley has been pushed at Lakeside and has not

had it all his own way. Do you believe you can go one stage further

and reach the semifinals? Yes. I have got a good record against

Wesley. I am really up for this one. I know he will be up for it as well.

Some five of the eight names confirmed for 2016. Three stories.
