Day 6 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Good evening and welcome to highlights from Day seven of the BDO

World Championships 2016 from the Lakeside. There's enough from the

evening to show you but we have to start with a cracker from this

afternoon. Defending champion Scott Mitchell against a newcomer that

Bobby Riggs lakes, who was he was tipping when no one else was, Mick

Dean E. The underdog was missing on this one, missing not one, not two,

not three, but unbelievably four match dart. Scott began to make him

pay after that and we pick it up at the end. This is in into extra legs.

It will go to one final 501 but now McGeeney has one last chance to stop

that happening. McGeeney remember was to legs up in this deciding set.

Missed a bull's-eye for the match. He missed two darts at 88 for the

match and then Mr double 16 to check out 143 for the match -- double 8 --

missed. McGeeney not lying well, he has to try to squeeze a treble in.

Can't do it. Since those missed match darts, credit to McGeeney, he

has hit three doubles in a row, including that massive bull's-eye to

legs go to stay alive. It's been a great scrap. Mitchell just with his

nose ahead here. McGeeney, if he can hit a couple of treble 20s he will

be sitting pretty. Got to win this one to win the match. Got a tonne.

Stay straight, stay straight he says as the match ticks over the 100

minute mark. And 40 minutes they have been sat there while these two

have been under the lights on stage trading blows. McGeeney has produced

some pretty rank darts at a key moment. All the neutrals in Lakeside

hoping this goes to sudden death because it's the sort of match that

deserves to. It's been so close all the way. What was that 45, Scott

says to himself. 41, 80, 45 for Mitchell. He's feeling it. That's in

the treble 5 and that's not in the treble 20 either. Own my word. Well,

it's the only thing this match hasn't had so far, a really nervy

leg from both players. This is it. A 100 puts him on a finish. If

McGeeney gets a 180, it would be a great time to get his seventh.

There's one... There's two... 140 is good. 121 is makeable. And he will

be back for it. This is for the match then for

McGeeney. Scott Mitchell is on 60. McGeeney, treble 17, bull's-eye for

the match. Goodness me. What tension. Tops for Scott Mitchell to

McGeeney will be thinking, I should have won that match, with a bit of

justification and a little bit of a joke between them. Lovely spirit.

Now they bull up to see who goes first in the sudden death leg. What

advantage and the big advantage of throwing first in the decisive leg.

so McGeeney has first crack this time. Oh, yes.

The crowd know they have watched a terrific game of darts and listen to

that, well merited. Only the 15th time a men's match has gone to a

sudden death leg in the history of the BDO World Championships. It's

actually the third time this week. Can he get another at a crucial

treble 19 here. Tops would win it. Oh, the wrong side of the wire. That

was his first match dart. Mark McGeeney has had and missed seven.

Will he get another one here? Yes he will if he hits big ten. Double 16

was in, his wife can't believe it. And now he just has to hope that

this epic match. He's got it! Scott Mitchell has managed to edge home in

front of his great friend. What a marvellous site that is. That was a

terrific game of darts. Went all the way. In a way you almost didn't want

to see a loser. But the world champion by the narrowest of squeaks

has managed to hold on with a sudden death victory. And the two of them

can only congratulate each other. Super match. And if you've enjoyed

pull that off? I'm not sure I'll ever know, Rob. When you play

somebody you know so well and we hung out for a week at the World Cup

together because we were playing pairs together, I knew today would

be a classic. He would never break, it was whether he gave me a chance

to win and fortunately he did. Eight times he had a dart for the match,

you must have thought one of these would have gone in and your title

defence was over? I wasn't watching, I was preparing for the next throw

so my mind was right. Is one of those games, my mind coach, Steve

McKibben, will be going nuts at me because I had the game in the bag

and I gave it away again. It was silly, on my own throat I couldn't

hold it, I was breaking no problem. I couldn't feel a thing and I was

doing nothing on my own throat. When I didn't win the bull up in the last

leg I relaxed and I thought I could just throw because it's not supposed

to be my. Once again you've shown tremendous guts and you are one

stage closer to defending that title. You're still in it, well

done, and absolutely brilliant match to watch. Hopefully I'll shown I'm a

champion. I don't want to give it up and hopefully that has shown that.

is the champion versus the young Dutchman Richard Veenstra. This was

one-way traffic in the first three sets. -- Mark did.

There is nothing Atkins can do about this. He has been punished.

Absolutely brilliant. The fluency of the throw is telling. Finishing

yourself this week? Maybe. They have given me a lot of confidence. I feel

on that stage. That is not my problem. I feel grateful for him and

In the women's competition, Lisa Ashton defeated her opponent in

three sets. It took McGrath resets as well. -- three sets. And Louise

Peters hit the highest female checkout ever. This 160 on her way

to a fantastic win against Zoe Jones. These are the winning darts.

In the last semi-final berth went here. Next up it is the last of the

men's final 16. He has won the title before. It was the Belgian star who

raced away in the winning, winning the first set. Then he took three

legs in the first set. That was the second one. Remarkable stuff at the

Lakeside. A hat-trick of legs on the Bullseye. He took the third as well.

Those darts to take the fourth set. A real pressure release. We joined

them at the beginning of the fifth. It is funny how quickly the tide can

turn at Lakeside. But he has the darts and if he holds he has done

it. There is tungsten man. That little break did not last long.

Got to keep the pressure up. He has never been beyond the second round.

You never know what he is going to be like when the finishing line

comes close. Never been this close to the quarter-finals. His three

previous visits have ended in four 1 defeats. As we have mentioned, three

times he has gone out to the eventual champion. To strike the

back. It is under pressure. Double 18. He has missed his last six darts

at a double. He will feel he needed that.

Great adjustment. Twice more. He is doing what he needs to do. On his

own throw. That is not great. When he is bad in a leg, he is very

bad. It is almost as if he is saving himself for the legs in which he

throws first. He does not want to waste the treble. Let us be having

it. There does not seemed to be much middle ground. It is either

brilliant or erratic. That is good. It puts the pressure on. This could

match. You are in the lead, you are a set away from a place in the world

championship quarter-finals. They will be irrelevant. Remember

that second set? He needs to remember that. On one of those

occasions, he could take out 86. This way, with a Bullseye. 64 for a

break of four. He was not going to miss two. He has got this thing now.

The men's has been absolutely remarkable. In the blink of an eye

they swapped places. They are flowing now. Not too shabby. This is

for the set. Trouble 17 for the Bullseye. Way back in the rearview

mirror. 66. 66. There it is. Three in a row. Fallen away alarmingly.

Waites fancies his chances. What this match deserves. They have not

both found form at the same time. Look at that. 105 in the set. It's

like he knows this match is gone. Only one winner at the moment. Just

gone. Completely gone. Yet another lag to move closer to the

quarter-finals. -- leg. We will see a lot about that mentality, De Voss.

Always missed it again. Five in a row. Is this the shot in the arm

De Voss lost his form. And he has done it. Somehow he has done it.

You have had some to synthase, not least winning the world title in

2013. -- some magnificent days here. But that was one of your best

moments here. I was in trouble from the start. Coming back in it 2-0.

Sometimes you have got to dig deep. I will never ever dig in. -- give

up. Coming back and winning 4-3, do not ever give in. When you think

earlier this year you were having surgery, it is quite sometime

around. It is. But it is nice to play darts and have no pain. For

everybody that plays sports all over, if you get an injury, it is
