Day 1 Part 2 Darts: World Championships

Hello again to those who've just switched over from BBC One. A warm

and sweaty welcome to the new viewers tuning in on BBC Two. We are

at the Lakeside. It's a BDO World Championships. Three games and

already we've had two giant killings.

The mens champion is out. Alan Norris has been here six years and

he walked the walk, winning in straight sets with a phenomenal

finish. Loving the bullseye. And gold n Golden Girls took part.

Tamara won the day. Bobby George, I know you predicted

Alan Norris, but - I have to put up with this all night even when we go

off air - but there were bolts from the blue, like Trina? She was about

in the match at all. -- she wasn't in the match at all. The other lady

played tidy darts. She went 147 at the right time and Trina was the

fives, not the scoring power shed. She wasn't the same player today.

What about the mens' champions? A sizeable number now going out. Eight

champions that went out in the first round after winning it. Scott Waits,

he goes out in the first round? Well, it's pressure, isn't it? Some

people can handle the pressure. If you've won it and come back to

defend it, it's very difficult. He's under a lot of pressure. Norris just

bashed him up in the end. What impressed you most about Alan

Norris' performance, keeping his cool in the set? He's been

practising the playing in the little tournaments and people think, why do

that, but it's the best thing for training. No good playing on your

own in the bedroom on the dartboard, you've got to go out and play people

and that's what he's doing, going out to the pubs and clubs, for silly

prize money, but he's been winning and that's what I said to you at the

beginning, he's dangerous because he's done his work.

When you win the world title from Scott Waits' point of view, your

year can change? World champions get paid to turn up. You can't blame

him. You don't focus on your darts like you should do. Some do, but

probably this year he didn't. He took the easy money, can't blame

him. He was a good world champion and he's had his day. He's a good

player. He'll be back. Adams is going to play against O'Shea in the

first round proper. That was a preliminary. The field of men is at

its biggest ever here at the Lakeside, up to 40. We are going to

see a live game in a minute from now.

Paul Jennings, the last two years, he's been in the quarter-finals, but

he's talken on a guy who's ice cool, confident and some would say a

little cocky, Wesley Harms, he's only been here twice, nolet a

problem, two semi-finals, some think he could go all the way and he's

been talking with Rob Walker. Wesley, a fantastic run here to the

semi-finals last year, happy to be back? Always happy to be here. Yes,

the crowd and everything, it's great. What do you want more? As a

darts player, you want to be here. You've said that last year was an up

and down year, but having said that, you won the World Cup and you had a

good win at the Scottish Open as well? Yes. Those were my two main

things I've won and the rest of the year I struggled a little bit. So

yes, some tournaments you lose early, but I've got my game face on

and we'll get there. One thing you never lack is

confidence. Oh, I've got enough confidence, so yes, everybody

wishing you luck gives you a good feeling as well.

It's just great. Paul Jennings had a good run to the quarter-finals last

year and won the Polish Open later on in the season. What's your

assessment of what you're going to need to produce to beat him? Paul

Jennings is a brilliant player, coming here. He never lost the first

round. For me, it's the same thing, so yes, it should be a cracking

game. Good luck. We can't wait to see it.

Thank you for that. I'm looking forward to this. It's

best of five. If Paul Jennings gets off to a good start, Wesley's smile

might be wiped off his face. They don't know what it's like to

get knocked out in the first round. They know what it's like to go deep

though. It's hard to pick a winner. Paul is slow slower. He's a good

player though. Harms has to play well to beat Jennings. I heard that

Wesley Harms went to bed at 10. 30 and he takes things deadly serious?

Yes, for some players, yes. He's a very serious player, wears a glove

when it's cold which is a bit weird but he's a tidy player and very good

at playing sets. He's a slow, very precise military dart player. We

want to get on to the stage now and say hello to a man whose last big TV

appearance was alongside Gene Wilder in Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory. This is the 2014 BDO world championships here at the home of

World Darts, the Lakeside. We Noel now welcome to the stage the

Dutch international, twice the Lakeside world semi-finalist, the

reigning Scottish world champion and singles champion, it's Sparky,

Wesley Harms. We now introduce the twice Lakeside

quarter-finalist, a six times BDO ranking title winner, the reigning

Polish Open champion, it's Jenno, Paul Jennings!

Two men who do not like to go home early from the Lakeside. That's

going to change this afternoon. Let's get straight to Tony Green and

Jim. Wesley Harms, a beaten semi-finalist for the last two

years, only the fifth man in Lakeside history to get to the last

four of his first two Lakeside Championships. Against him,

Hartlepool's Paul Jennings, whose worst result here is a quarter-final

defeat. Jenno only lost one set last year and the highest ranked of the

unseeded players, he is. Both of these guys learned how difficult

things can be, after meeting in the epic quarter-final in 2012 which

Jenno lost 5-3. What is intriguing is, it's only the

best of five sets today. It can get off to a flyer. It could be

completely different. When the draw was made, Tony, this was one fixture

that jumped off the page? There is a few. But Jennings is an entertainer.

Lad from Hartlepool up north there. Wesley, like you said he's done no

harm as far as his play and titles. He's from the Netherlands.

Ladies and gentlemen, first set, first leg, Paul to throw first. Game

on! OK, Jim. Let's go for it!

Huge amount of mutual respect between these two men.

Perfect record in the first round here in the Lakeside. Clearly, one

of these two will see that record tarnished in the next hour or so.

Over sucks foot tall. So serious looking with his face.

Concentrating. Yet to find his range so far,

Wesley, just the one treble in nine darts thrown up to this point. Jenno

with the advantage. 74 for Paul Jennings when he comes

back. Gets the treble with his first dart.

16 leaves double top. And he's got the 16 finish. The

first leg of the game goes against the darts darts. Good start for

Wesley. Now for some indifferent scoring around the trebles. Great

checkout. The other thing as well, Jim, it was Martin McGuinness the --

against the darts. Took the advantage in this set.

She'll be warm in that! Certainly hot in here.

Doesn't mess about. Straight through.

Jennings just 37 years of age. Quarter-finalist of 2012 and 2013.

Here at the Lakeside. Jenno's ranked 17th in the world, so

that makes him the most highly regarded of the unseeded players

here in the tournament. He was unseeded last year and took out Ross

Montgomery in the first round. Treble 20 to leave 78. That Beale

the shot. No, he's don't go for 57. So treble 19 again. -- he's gone for

57. Would have left him double top. But Army's coming back for 56.

Wonder how big he is on the doubles. Double top. Double 10. Oh, options

now. So, having lost the first leg, a

chance to get back straightaway for Paul Jennings. Double top required.

Now double 10. APPLAUSE

And both men with a break of throw in the opening leg.

Paul to throw first. Game on. Now he has the darts, can he make

them count? Given that bit of an advantage.

I like his throw. Good rhythm, full extension of the arm. Have a look at

that when he comes next to the oche. Full extension, as I say. Nice, easy

follow-through and there's the result.

So Harms leads. Won five BDO ranking titles in his career, the Dutchman,

including the Scottish Open in February and the WDF World Cup where

he beat Stephen Bunting in the final.

Sneeze 101. Leaving himself double top. Impressive so far. He's in to

it win. The first and the third legs. All three have gone against

the darts up to this point. There you go. Like a python.

Straight at his enemy. Tony O'Shea has been beaten by him

in the semi-finals in each of the twloos events. This time though,

he's in the top half of the draw, Tony's in the bottom half. They

can't meet until the final. -- those two events. Lot of chickens being

counted there, of course. Certainly will be pleased, Tony.

It's a finish though, 124, Jennings still on 161. Having no luck.

Time on his side here, Wesley. Went for the treble 18 which would have

left him bull. But probably no harm done. He knows he'll be back for 43

which will give him the first set. Could be looking for 11 with his

first throw. 16 with the second. Let's see. Happy New Year to you

too! Just got the three. Double 16.

Missed with the first and only just hit with the second. He's just given

Jennings a chance with a 140 here. A chance that the Teessider was

unable to take. Pressure on here. Double 8. Yes, double 8 it is. The

first set, Wesley Arms. -- Harms. Right in the middle. Second set,

first leg, Wesley to throw first. Game on.

Superior finishing from the Dutchman. Critical in that first

step. This is more like the Jennings we

know of last year. Oh, look at that! Oh, what a shame. The flight must

have caught it, pushed it up. Look, there it is. Oh, dear!

That's frustrating enough, but when you throw one at the board and it

costs you 40, even more frustrating. Loose darts here. And a chance now

for Jennings. He's trying too hard. That's his problem. Needs to be a

bit looser. Two great cover darts but it's the first dart really

that's not been his friend up to this point. This is better for

Wesley. 180! The crowd on their feet again. That

was a sucker punch. Buy heck. 17 will leave double top. For the

first leg of the second set. Yes, game shot and Paul will throw first

next. Dutchman deadly around double top up to this point. Hit it three

times. Good start here though, Jim. Oh, no. Oh, what have you got to do?

! Can't believe it. Look at that! I think he needs to shout for them

points. Rough them up a bit. A fraction over five legs of darts,

Jenno's had four bounce outs, the last costing him 60, the one before

that costing him 40. . If Harms has been unlucky with the

draw in getting Jennings, clearly Jenno will feel the same way. He was

unlucky last year, he ended up getting Scott Waite in the

quarter-final, the only man in the entire tournament who managed to

take a couple of sets off the eventual champion and lost that 5-2.

Quite a prolific run for Jennings. Six rankings in less than three

years, most recently winning the Polish Open last year when he beat

de-Graff in the final. Hope this one doesn't bounce out.

Treble 20. Treble 19 next in his line of fire. Probably go back up to

the 20s here. As it is, Harms on 68. 16. Oh, he

wants double Toms. Pulled it down. -- double tops. An opportunity for

Jennings. An opportunity he surely has to take. Three crucial darts

here for Paul. Good start. Double 10, two darts at it. Now double 7.

Unable to make the recovery in what could be a costly error. He couldn't

hit double 10, can Wesley? Yes, he can! His finishing has been the

sharper. Consequently, he's take taken the 2-0 lead in the second

set. Yes, it's going all harm's way. --

all harm's way. Really got to get into it now. Had

no luck whatsoever. Good cover shot. Anthony is the man taking charge.

The bow tie he has has Clutha written on it, paying tribute to the

helicopter crash into the pub on the River Clyde in Glasgow. 180!

At last some cheers for Jennings. In theory, it was his third 180, the

second that counted, he had one bounce out, of course.

Can't finish from here though. This for the set. And a 2-0 lead.

Treble 17 would leave double top. Jennings will be back looking at 90.

Harms only needing double 16. What can Paul do from here? Double 15.

Decent marker. Can he squeeze it in. He managed to do it. That would have

done his confidence the world of good after losing four successive

legs. Still a lot to do. Needs toe get this leg.

Oh, another one! Another one! Oh, dear.

Fortunately enough, only one scored. One scored by Harms. Don't look down

in anger! The good news for Paul Jennings is

he has the darts as he tries to make things all square in this second

set. The bad news is, he's yet to win a single leg in which he's had

the darts. Broken all three times by Wesley Harms. He won't have a better

opportunity than now, Jim. 285 before the throw, Harms on 377.

145 treble 20. Has his own way of finishing.

Buts it happens, Harms on 332 won't be finishing.

Six darts at 80. Just asking for clarification of what that has hit.

It was a single 7. Double top when he comes back in a

moment. He will be coming back. Fourth leg, Paul Jennings. Wesley to

throw first. Game on. General hoe holds for the first time

and now Wesley Harms will try and do likewise and take a 2-0 lead. Yes,

it's advantage time for Harms. He has gone off the boil a bit.

The difference now between 1-1 or 2-0 to Harms. A bit of pressure here

for the lad from Hartlepool. His scoring has been better in the first

nine. An average of four points a dart.

Good recovery that. Oh, yes. That's going to help him on his way. Not

finished yet, but Harms on 265. Just when he needs a big score! He

nails the 180. That's a massive one for Paul. Harms can't take out the

167, so Jennings back, 49 for the set.

It's the big 17. Two darts at double 16 to tie it up at one set apiece.

News with the first. And has newed with the second as well.

10. It's the double top. Way off. Nerves are creeping in here.

Can Jennings take the second out of Harm's way? Double 9. Talk about

pressure. One now for double 4. Just the one

dart at double 4 for the second set. Oh! Could be a costly error. Nobody

wants it! Double top. Harm's throw. Harms

second set. Well... Paul to throw first. Game on. All those chances

missed. But as it is now, Harms 2-0 up in

sets. An absolute sickener for Jennings,

in the manner in which he lost it. 2-0 down now and Harms has hit twice

as many doubles in fewer attempts. He's getting back into it now, come

on. 2-0 down. Two sets for Wesley Harms up to this

point. For Jennings, none. Saying prayers there for Jennings. But

Harms is taking it away. Jennings will be back for 121. He's

only held his throw once so far. He's looking up. Yes, he's got the

60. 11 or the treble. He wants the bull. He's left it. Can he get it?

No. 9 for double 16 for Jennings. He

hasn't hit double 16 all afternoon so far. Now's the time, Paul, you

need it. Same old story. Double 16. One to go. He's got

markers. A chance I'm sure he thought he

wouldn't get. Paul Jennings second leg. Game on. Wesley to throw first.

Crucial for Paul Jennings, that. One of the nuns there giving a very nice

smile! There she is, the Sound of Music!

C!- The Lakeside is alive. Forget the scotch, I like me ale!

Needs all the prayers here. 144. Needed the treble. So harm's coming

back for double so. -- double 10. -- so harm's coming back.

General know had a great debut tournament in 2012, beating Thompson

and Douglas on his way to the quarter-final defeat to Harms. Last

year saw off Montgomery and Cullen. Lost only one set out of eight that

he played. Getting through to the quarter-final with Waits. He's got

work to do if this tournament's not going to end at the first possible

juncture. That's better. Both players have set up the 180

with two perfect first starts on a number of occasions.

Let's see if he can do it. It's a good start. Single 20 now. He made

it difficult. Had to move across, but it's double top. Treble 13 for

double 16 and a 131 out shot. Wesley Harms wins that leg. Dazzling

Dutch darts from Wesley Harms. A 131, his highest out of the

tournament. Wesley to throw first. Game on.

Wesley Harms one leg away now with the darts in his hand. More relaxed

as well. The celebration spoke volumes, it

wasn't just the 131 and the manner of the 131, but the significance of

the time in which he did it after Jennings missed the dart at double

top. Now he leads 2-1. General know I'm sure will feel that he is

ultimately beaten here and hasn't had the rub of the green. Look at

that. -- general know. -- Jenno. Can't win matches on that, you

really can't. Like I said, it goes that way sometimes. Nno. -- Jenno.

Still able to squeeze one in. Wesley Harms beats Paul Jennings for the

second time in three Lakeside tournaments and he makes its through

to a second round tie. Paul Jennings can't find a way past the Dutchman

again. First time he's ever been beaten in the first round. Some

impressive stuff from Harms. Wesley Harms 3.

CHEERING AND Paul Jennings might feel he punched

himself in the face one or two times too many. Two semi-finals in a row

he's on the march again, Harms. MUSIC

Bobby, let's start with the positives, Harms a 45% check out

rate. When you check any game of darts that's happened anywhere in

the world in the last 12 years, that's world class standard, not

much else was firing? Well, 45% is really good. Jennings did lose a few

darts, that was unfortunate. I haven't seen that before. We should

clear that up. Last year the dartboard saw too many bounce outs,

they were a little dry. This year the dartboard's changed, the players

are loving it and there was only two other bounce outs in all the other

games. Could it be Jennings darts? Must be. You have got to rough your

flights otherwise they bounce out. I've never seen that many before.

Never seen a guy lose so many darts, so it's got to be his darts. The

dartboard is OK, so many darts just stick in the board. Harms,

particularly in the doubles, he had his 131. We've come to expect this

of the young man. He call him cool, confident and cocky. Very, very

serious. Even when he's happy he's serious!

And Wesley Harms when he hit the winning dart, he played like that

against seven, eight, nine, ten other play players, he'd be out now?

It's a bad draw for them two because they are two good players. Jennings

is a good player. He didn't hit many doubles, Harms didn't give him the

chance but he's a good player. It's a shame that you get draws like

that. . Did you have a fiver on him? No, no, no. Let's hear from Wesley

with Rob Walker. Tell you what, Colin, this guy is as

smooth as silk itself. Wesley, what is it about performing here at

Lakeside that you seem to love and thrive on so much? I actually don't

know, but I don't think I'm supposed to win the game, it's just a few

high score finishes that I made that made a difference. In the end, he

had a lot of bounce outs so we'll call this one luck. We were talking

this morning about how the fact that 2013 didn't pan out how you would

have liked, but it's certainly looking as though your confidence

and groove is returning just in time?

I think so. I just see 2014 as a new start so we are beginning all over

again and yes, winning the first game is always a good moment to say

yes, I'm happy with that. Do you feel that this tournament is now a

lot wider open than it was before Scott Waits was knocked out? I think

you can never say that because everybody that's here is a

performance darts player so everybody could be a world champion.

You never know. Darryl or Tony next. Who do you prefer or are you so

confident you don't care? Actually I don't mind, you know, they still

need to play and I'm the lucky one, I can watch the game, so we'll see

what happens. There's one thing for sure, I need to perform better. I'm

sure you will, but that 131 check out's not a bad way to up your check

out accounts here. Tell you what, Colin, this guy is so cool, calm and

composed, you can't rule him out! Absolutely. Terrible at pool, beaten

by a certain Northern Irishman last night, but I'm pretty sure he'd beat

me at darts every day of the week. What a day we've had. We have a bit

of bonus time so we can show you a combination of Alan Norris against

last year's champion, Scott Waits. We'll join it at 2-0 to Norris and

it's the deciding leg of the third set. . Game on. Norris has a chance.

Now he's got it all to do. There's the finish for that man

there, the champion. Still got a mountain to climb.

Well, if he can win this leg, Scott Waites, then we 're back with the

darts. What a save your, that one. Just

keeps him there. Norris still favourite at this stage.

Big finish 117. What a shot it would be to talk the champion out. Big as

they come. Two treble 20s and a bullseye. That's what's needed. He

doesn't have to go for it. Lets's see if he does.

Missed 84 for the match. That was in the previous leg. 85. Between Norris

and round 2. 15s and 20s. Bullseye. Oh, he's got it!

Oh, yes. How many times has it happened in the past? The world

champion falls at the first double hurdle of his defence. Norris is the

boy! He's the man. He's the star of the day. You would be gutted to go

out in the first round coming off the back of winning the title 12

months ago but there's something to be said about not losing it

yourself. He was playing a guy set up 100 average in the first nine

darts, the guy was hitting half his check outs and he missed two? But he

wasn't the player he was last year. Didn't get a chance to be though,

did he? No, he was on top of him, didn't let him go. He got beaten up,

in the nighest possible way. Alan, we can say this, we hang out with

them, Alan's been saying since we got here on Friday morning, I'm

going to win this game, put your house on it, I'm going to knock out

the champion and that's not him, he's a quiet guy, but this time he

said, I'm going to do him. I said to you that Eid been in tournaments,

little ones, not big ones -- he'd been in tournaments. You have got to

practise. That's what he done, he put the hours of practise in. Don't

practise on your own, you play people that you don't know. You come

in, takes the nerves away. Waites has all the pressure on him because

he's world champion. He won't be world champion come next Sunday

because it's not going to be Scott any more, he's out. What about Alan

Norris, the adrenaline rush he's going to have following the highs

and lows, does he need to get sleep now, not let it go to his head and

not celebrate too much? I don't think it will go to his head because

sucks years he's been here and he's a sensible guy. He's got to up his

game to be world champion. You've got to maintain at least 100 a

throw, at least 15 darts a leg to be a world champion. He's not far away,

but he's got to up his game. There's one man we haven't talked about

today, Stephen Bunting he'd have loved today, a pint of WKD behind

stage watching that? We'd forgotten all about him but he's played the

best last year. The best player in the BDO. He's won a lot of

tournaments. There are luger darts, great big

doubles and trebles and bullseyes, but there's a lot of money in this.

I don't blame the boy. He's oning a few of them. Certainly a lot of

people's smart money is on him. Remember when Dave Chisnall walked

in in his yellow T-shirt and we were like, who's he. We've had a

legendary first day. Just reminding people tuning in just now. A big

win. Just watched Wesley Harms beat

beating Paul Jennings. Trina Gulliver has been searching for

years for this score. Tamara Schurh knocked her out. You can see on the
