Second Round: Day 1 Darts: World Championships

Good afternoon, despite the fact it is one o'clock on Wednesday, we are

heaving here at Lakeside and it is second round time and 16 men are

looking to capture the famous old trophy that currently resides in a

box under Scott Mitchell's bed. This afternoon, the number one seed is

back on stage, he has the Masters and he wants the World Championship

as well, Glen Durrant is gunning for glory and he will face Larry Butler

who is nicknamed the Eagle, his experience could count. We will have

a complete women's quarterfinals line-up after this afternoon,

Lorraine Winstanley against Rachel Brookes, and then Jim Williams

flying the flag for Wales having whitewashed Tony O'Shea in the first

round and he will need to be in good form because he is playing Wesley

Harms, the Dutchman winning in five sets against Seigo Asada last night.

A warm welcome from Lakeside. We spent an afternoon with the legend

who has been around for so long, yesterday I heard him refer to Larry

Butler as some! I am old enough! -- son. Second round, apart from the

games today, what jumps out at you? Mitchell against McGeeney? Mitchell

played very well first round and had a tough game. He kept it together

and finished well. A bit of authority on the stage. He played

well. I thought he might go a bit first game but he didn't, he raised

his game. Mark McGeeney is the unknown quantity, and if he can

raise his game, that is more of a contest than people might think.

Mark is a very tidy player, I have seen him and he plays very well. He

is quiet, no one knows him, only in the darts world. If he starts

putting them in, he could do some damage. Scott Waites against good De

Vos, that jumps out. I am looking forward to Dawson against Smith will

. The new qualification system has

given Larry Butler a chance to come here for the second time, 1992 was

his last time! They say you remember your defeats as much as your

victories. You spoke to him last night when he walked past us, Hiro

membered the exact out shot you beat him with about 30 years ago! -- he

remembered. He said I played him when he was a little baby, and I

went out on 96! He has got a good memory. But he is quite dangerous.

America play a shorter format so they are sharp on the out shots.

This is longer, he might not play this overlap. His average is right

down but his checkout percentage is a brilliant 40%. It is if he can get

to those with Durrant's scoring power. It is a longer format, it

doesn't hurt you if you lose the first set. If it is best-of-5, you

are in trouble but this is longer so we should see better darts. He will

take his chance, if Glen gives him a chance, he will take it. You have to

be a bit hard edged to win here, Scott Mitchell learned the hard way,

Glen Durrant seems to have as well from that interview. He is a nice

guy but from now on he is not taking prisoners. Whatever the opponent,

you are here to win. Everybody remembers the champion and not the

loser. Some people feel different. Everybody has a different approach.

Unless I am mistaken, I like watching TV, but isn't that the guy

from the Chase Rosti what next? Richard Osmond? Celebrities! Matt

Ford was here yesterday. People love their darts, as long as there are

doubles and troubles. Is that the guy from the Chase? Yes! I'm not

checking him out! Lets get the players on.

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the richest arts organisation,

welcome to the 2016 Lakeside World Championships. -- British Darts

Organisation. It is the second round here at Lakeside! We now introduce

to the stage our USA regional qualifier, a former World Matchplay

champion, from Hohaia, the Eagle, Larry Butler! -- from Ohio.

We now welcome to the stage Lakeside World Championship semifinalist. He

is the current holder of six world ranking titles. He is the world

number one, the reigning world Masters champion, England's Glen

Durrant! Larry Butler looking to be the

star-spangled spanner in the works for Glen Durrant. Over to our

commentators. COMMENTATOR: Good afternoon. Then

Durrant is the 2-1 favoured to win this BDO World Championships and of

course a massive favoured to win this but they know all about each

other. In the final of the world Masters last year, Glen Durrant bead

Larry Butler but earlier in that week in the qualification for the

grand slam, it was Butler who beat Durrant. Speaking to Larry, he says

he is more than ready to win this match and is not intimidated by

facing the world number one. He is a computer expert from darter no

higher -- from Dayton, oh hi oh. He has some support in the crowd,

most notably his wife, Sharon. Glen Durrant from Middlesbrough has had a

terrific year and if he can replicate that he will take some

stopping this week. He has already accounted for Dean Reynolds, he said

he felt nervous in the opening match. Can he produced his best

today? Ladies and gentlemen, it is the best of seven sets, it is Glen

to throw first, game on. I'd tell you what, we could be in

for some fireworks. Even the walk on is have got this

place a thing. If they produce anything like the darts they did in

the grand slam qualifier, only nine legs but still, it was something

special. Very high standard. Butler won that 5-4. It went all the way.

Butler is a really good finisher. He might not get the big scores but

if he gets anything like that and if he can hold Durrant on the scoring

power, Butler has the game and finishing power to be right in the

mix and maybe even spring what would be a huge upset. Where he plays,

Larry Butler, and the sort of matches, they tend to be shorter

matches so you don't have time trying to find your double, you

either find it or you've lost. And he played something like 35 weekends

a year which is a busy itinerary. What a year Glen Durrant has had,

since losing to Martin Adams in that fabulous semifinal last year when he

averaged nearly 100 but came up short, he

six titles in 2015. Butler has an opportunity in this

opening leg. He is ahead against the darts.

Let's see about some of that finishing power. Not that time.

We with treble 20. It's on... What

about that for a way to start a match! A 141 checkout and Larry

Butler can only stand and admire and gives him a sporting little round of

applause. He treated us to a 144 in the quarterfinals against Darryl

Fitton last year, Glen Durrant. In that semifinal against Martin Adams,

he hit 13 180s and of course missed three match darts to reach the

final, losing 5-3 in the deciding set. He looks very much to have his

match head on, that look of steely determination and the 141 checkout.

He is such a nice fella away from the stage. But as any player has to

be, he has to have that killer instinct and produce darts like

that! Opening maximum of the match, could be the first of many. A great

chance to break. Butler is nowhere. And Durrant is on 181 after six

darts. He is potentially on an 11 darter.

Durrant could pick up the first rate of the match. -- first break. He

doesn't need to hit it this time and he won't. Still not happy about

missing that treble 10. You could see the look of irritation. He can

rectify it now with double 16. Beautiful. Two doubles out of two

attempts and 2-0 to the good. We talked about Larry Butler's

finishing, how about Glen Durrant? 141 with the darts macro in the

first leg and a 13 dart leg to follow it. And how about that? He is

not the top seed for nothing. The big fella from the United States

awakens. We hoped it would be good, we expected it to be good and it is

good! It is better than good, it is outstanding already.

Nice cover from Butler. How he would love to Nick leg back. He needs to

get into this match, Larry. The longer format at this stage, the

first 24-macro sets. -- the first to four sets.

Butler will come back with 126, not a bad finish also it is all about

the 19s. One dart at double 16. 104 making

him the winner of the first set. Superb darts, averaging over 98 and

three doubles out of three, 100% checkout rate. The only double Larry

Butler ain't for was that bullseye in the third leg -- aimed for. We

mentioned the finishing would be key and this is just great. Another

maximum to start the leg from the top seed. The finishing is perfect

and the scoring is not bad either. Quality darts. A three figure

average for Durrant. That is why he is giving Butler a bit of a tower

link at the moment. -- a bit of a beating. If you missed his opening

two matches, Larry Butler, he had to play a luminary round match against

James Hurrell. He then beat Ryan De Vreede. They were both 3-2. Durrant

on a finish again but not this time but he is a long way clear and

setting it up nicely. Those were Butler's first matches on the

Lakeside stage since 1992 when he made his debut.

When you are that far ahead, you can afford one won the dart at a double.

-- wonky dart. He said when he beat Dean Reynolds that he was shaking

like a leaf inside. He was really relieved to get through that.

Absolutely. The mantle of favouritism obviously carries a

pressure with it. He had a real spring in his step for

the rest of the day after coming through that match, Glen Durrant. He

has had to get his game ahead act on again. He did pretty well because

Dean Reynolds is a good player and he won fairly comfortably. -- back

on. He looked at his draw and he thought he had a tough one so he was

relieved to get it away. 164 is a finish. He has already had

141. He will get another visit, Butler is on 225. Larry Butler could

do with a score here to leave himself a reasonable finish, if

Durrant misses 104. The way he is throwing, that is a big if.

He can't do it, treble 20 would put him on two double four.

For only his second dart at a double, they have both been at the

red brick in the centre. -- read bit.

Good darts. Really good. Five doubles out of six. He has won five

legs on the spin. Astonishing checking out. Five out

of six from the top seed. If you are new to darts, anything over 50% is

that a stick. Over 60 is wonderful stuff. -- is fantastic.

His actual scoring has gone off the boil a bit, Durrant, after a quite

brilliant start. Still scoring heavily enough to have left Larry

Butler just two darts at a double and both at bullseye in this in tire

match. -- entire match. This is more like it. His fourth maximum of the

match already. No outshot, 166 required. But the

throw of Butler is under a lot of pressure now.

Bullseye again. He went for the 99, maybe he thought he hit the treble.

That was a massive miscount. That is a set again, already. Six legs in a

row. Six doubles out of seven attempts.

Treble 16 would have left double 9, that is his thinking. Here we go

again, Glen Durrant. Oh yes! Yes indeed! Five maximums in six and a

bit legs. He is back in the zone now. It is wonderful to watch,

unless you are Larry Butler. There's another one. Just the wrong side of

the wire. He was annoyed to miss it. He is fancying that ?50,000 bonus

for the nine-darter. You would not act against him, the way he is

throwing at the moment. He has upped his game from his opening match

significantly. We thought he had another gear to go into against Dean

Reynolds and he is starting to show it.

He doesn't have to take it out and he won't. Again, Butler is way back.

You have two feel a bit for Larry Butler. He has not got into the

match, he has not been given an opportunity, he has been battered

out there and is not scoring heavily enough. Double 16 for a seventh leg

in a row. Seven doubles out of eight. Genuinely extraordinary.

Larry Butler has had just three darts at a double, all at bullseye,

so his average for his first nine darts are almost identical. He is

just being swamped. They take a break at the end of the next set and

it can't come soon enough for Butler. He desperately needs to get

into this match somehow. He's simply not being allowed to,

they say you play the board and not the man that when the man is

throwing the sort of darts that Glen Durrant is a that is the sort of

thing that is very difficult to do. The Japanese player with an American

flag! Both looked rather forlorn than

they? Just at the moment. Onto a finish again, already. I tell you

what, you would not be surprised if he took this out. He has had five

maximums, need another couple of treble 20s before the Bill. Not this

time. Again, must start with the treble 20

and does. Another one. For double 1440 148.

You would watch a lot of darts matches before use finishing like

this. 89% out rate. Eight legs in a row. Eight doubles in nine attempts.

Extraordinarily. Sensational. Brilliant arts. -- darts. Just one

more lake to go free sets up. -- leg. The wife of Larry Butler. She

has not been cheering much but that 140 was much needed.

Has he got it in him to be able to fight back, does he have the game to

do that? If he keeps doing this, maybe. Larry Butler might be first

to finish. That was unlucky, the second dart.

So close to being another maximum. Cannot be done. He's still had just

three darts at bullseye to win legs. Just that to show for eight legs of

darts. Topsy needs. Must hit it, does hit

it. This is better. His third maximum of

the match. We have had seven already. Chanting USA again.

One thing you can say about Larry is he has a very good temperament, he

does just keep chugging along. Absolutely right.

Treble 20s needed. Leads himself with a tonne when he comes back.

Will not want to lose this set. Glen Durrant.

But Butler is right back and it if he takes this out. Great dart. Tops.

To level. Needed two trebles to start. Double

10 for Butler. Only got 100. Six. -- only got one double out of six. We

have talked about what a good finisher he is and he is not showing

it. Tops, for a free set lead. -- 3-set. Half the crowd thought it was

in. Middlesbrough on his top, they are going all the way in the

championship at the moment, Glenn Durrant going very nicely indeed. He

warmed up with Mark from the chase but she is streets ahead so far

against Larry Butler. Masterminding a 3-set lead. Bobby George, big

words before his second-round match and they were big darts to back it

up. 89% on the is unbelievable. Scoring so well as well. Down to

75%. The tonne plus finishes was the showbiz, three of them coming from

all different parts of the board. Lovely stuff. 104. 141. 148. Butler

is good at finishing but he had a chance to take

and putting pressure on it could turn the game around but he has to

buck up quickly. From the walk on, sometimes from this position on the

Larry Butler was trying to remember where to stand on the stage, he

looked anxious to me. It is a big occasion, 22 years between Lakeside

appearances. He's worked hard, he had to qualify. But remember, it has

been 22 years and you don't want to leave at another 22 years so he

wants to play well to see if he can get further in the tournament and he

was a bit lost up there to be fair. He was snatching the first

like Glenn Durrant, 75%, you have been in that situation we have been

hitting doubles but you have also been the other player, what's it

like when you know your opponent is likely to hit it when he gets to it.

You don't like it, in your mind you thinking miss. But that's the game,

beat your opponent, keep on top and don't give them a chance but

sometimes the break-out is the player who is not playing well.

Let's see Butler, if he is playing any better. I know he is a set away

and every penny I have would be on him to win, but Larry throwing fast

so if you look at it from a tennis point of view he is one set behind.

If he holds his throw and turns his game around, I don't think you well,

but it's only the set after this one he has to win to be 3-3. If he holds

his darts he has every chance to get back in the game. Glenn looking

untouchable at the moment. COMMENTATOR: We do sometimes see big

turnarounds after a little breaks. We saw one big turnaround last night

didn't we? Ryan Dawson coming fighting back when he was 2-0 down.

Winning 3-2 against John Walton. Had a couple of darts at double tops to

win the match and still wasn't fazed. Butler needs to be as scrappy

as he was. Speaking of darts to win and match, Glen Durrant had three

darts to reach the final here last year and even though he put it out

of his mind to the extent that he won six ranking titles and got

himself seeded number one, and unquestionably I think has been the

best player on the BDO circuits, it must have rankled. Somewhere in the

back of his mind, those darts must have rankled. You still have to do

it when you get up there. Might have run of form behind him but he's got

to produce. Look at the PPC and Michael van Gerwen, the year he had,

when it came to the World Championships he was found wanting.

Larry on the throw, has to take out 103.

Two missed doubles in a row? We've not seen that from him yet.

His nose is ahead and that is a break of throw. So now it looks as

though it will take a miracle for Butler to get back into this.

He was pleased with that last dart. With good reason.

overall. Pretty nice. The finishing is not shabby either.

Despite those two missed doubles in a row in the last leg, ten from 15,

you will take that any day of the week. To write.

Has to break the throw. Still not on a finish however. Glen Durrant will

have first pop at finishing this. Coming down the board. Very handy

indeed, nicely placed. He has miscoded once, make sure you don't

do it again Larry. -- miscounted. I don't think he was about to do that.

74. 20, Fort Ops. -- for tops. Don't think she will be for the cup

that flag before too long. Just as Larry Butler may have

sniffed another opportunity Glen Durrant extinguishes those hopes.

One more leg for the match. He's only won one all match, Butler.

Anything you can do... Matching Butler 's 140 opener. Now he could

put him under some pressure. Not lying well, coming down the board.

It's not been a tight match, it's not been a close match, it's not

been an exciting match but it's been fascinating to watch because of what

Len Durrant did principally in the first two sets but is still doing

now. Potential 12 dart if he takes out 124 to win the match.

coming back from the break and breaking the throw straightaway, to

continue to hit in average in the high 90s and check out more than

happy double attempts take some going. He played very well, 50% and

percent at doubles. All the man from a

year. I love the way you are saying you want to win, you are the man. I

apologise if I come across as arrogant, I don't want that. But the

disappointment lasted over a month last year from Martin Adams. It's

wonderful to be up there again winning darts. You were consummate

up there, never in trouble, all credit to Larry for qualifying and

getting back year after 22 years but that was a dominant performance.

Assess it yourself, the first set and half of the second set you could

not miss. Larry Butler is a legend and will always be on my raise a

because I played him in the Masters final but before the match I was

practising really well, to get onto the stage. Delighted. You are

chastising yourself, it felt like you were in that type of zone.

That's a great word, I was in the zone. It's part of the game. Larry

is a real legend, but for hand we had a good chat. Afterwards he was

fantastic, just talking to them, very chuffed. Looking at that part

of the draw, these final parts mean Glen Durrant is waiting for either

Scott Thwaites or get divorce. I enjoyed the Brian Dawson game last

night. Scott is a grand slam winner and I would

be delighted to play against him. The confidence is wonderful, excited

every time you step on the stage. You started the programme

fantastically, thank you. Let's get onto the women, almost into the

quarterfinals as it stands. Just one match which we will get you in a

second. If we can sum up the women, shocks everywhere. We have lost

Fallon Sherrock. It's been exciting. The Golden girl against the lady who

has won the last two titles, it's like the old guard and the new guard

coming together. That be interesting. I think we so will win.

Trina has been struggling -- I think Lisa will win. Before we concentrate

on the court finals we need to concentrate on the last three, one

more Place up for grabs. At last, it seems like you have been waiting and

age for this match. It's been a long week but I'm enjoying it. Do you

think it's better in some ways to be the last of the first-round action?

I am not sure, in previous years I played early. And quite happy to be

later this time. Semifinalist in 2012, you lost, this could be an

opportunity, if you get past this first-round match, to avenge that

defeat, is it on your mind? It's not, I take every game as it comes.

You take the one in front of you first which is what I focusing on.

What about Rachel, what is your gut feeling? I have played her a few

times, she is a good friend. We play Yorkshire County together, you

cannot underestimate anybody, you have to go in focused and prepare

the best you can. How much does it help having been here, knowing they

got to the final in 2011, he knows what you're going through? He does,

and to be fair it's nice for me to give him the experience which he

gives me when I go and support him when he is playing in the PDC. To

have him here is everything and I have my girls coming down to support

me as well. I'm looking forward to seeing them, it's been a long week

without them. Our pull, lament of support and we look forward to

seeing your husband jumping up and down on his seat as we know he will.

to his standard. She travels the world. I think this is a real match,

I would not like to go either way on it. Sometimes the doubles let them

down. Whoever gets the doubles Sharp will win this match but I would not

like to see who is going to do it. Lorraine says she doesn't mind

settling in and getting herself together, we been here from Friday

night, the first games were Saturday 1pm and we are already midweek and

she's not throw and dart yet. She's practised. But it's nice to have the

atmosphere and meet the people. They don't pester you here. If you come

down before your game, you meet everyone, if you come on the day you

are going to play, how are you doing, how are your darts? You are

not concentrate on what you are doing, but she has had time to get

everything in the order and can concentrate on the darts. I think

it's a good thing and meet everyone and you can settle. To the oche once

World Championship semifinalist, a winner of nine world ranking titles,

a former British Open champion, the reigning German open champion, it is

Lorraine Winstanley! We now welcome a former world

Masters finalist, a former Finland open and Turkish open champion, it

is Rachel Brooks! win by name but will it be win by

nature? Winstanley will give no quarter against Rachel Brooks. To

Seeded number six this year, and she has had a good year, she beat Zoe

Jones to has had a good year, she beat Zoe

three other finals. These are Yorkshire county team-mates. Rachel

Brooks, quarterfinal last year, it was an epic as well,

finals in 2015, the Finnish Masters and Polish Open. John Walton has

ranked 29th in the PDC world rankings right now.

This is for the final quarterfinal place. All four quarterfinals on

Thursday. For the last three place. All four quarterfinals on

Lorraine Winstanley has gone out in the first round and she will be

wanting to put that run to an end. She is the number six seed here.

Rachel Brooks is number nine in the BDO rankings. She is a Doncaster

lass, Rachel. Lorraine and Dean have lived in Buxton for the last five

years or so. Steady start from Winstanley.

Four straight tonnes for Lorraine Winstanley. You would take that

every time. She will come back with 101 for the first leg. If she gets

this checkout, she will be improving her average. Treble 20 would have

left double 19. 109 for Rachel Brooks. Plenty of

fancy dress and outrageous headwear, wigs and goodness knows what. I saw

a bloke who looked like Roy Wood out of Wizard. That is a seriously bad

shirt that Dean is wearing! Those are his daughters with him, I wonder

what they make of it! To strike first...

68 to take the leg against the throw. Lorraine can hardly bring

herself to watch. Tops. Good finishing, 68 checkout for a leg

against the throw. And a leg she was never really in.

100, 100, 100, 100 from Winstanley but not able to take it out.

Scoring is not the problem. It was where it went wrong when she put in

those four tonnes in the first place, including a couple of missed

doubles. A wry smile, that was not far away

from 140. There is Ann-Louise Peters who will play Zoe Jones in the

quarterfinals. Peters knocked out Fallon Sherrock, one of the big

favourites. She threw very well. She put Fallon right out of her rhythm.

If you were wondering where she was, panic over! In safe hands here at

the Lakeside. Get yourself down here as well, Vern.

Lorraine Winstanley is in a great place here to break straight back

after 100, 140, and 81. This is good throwing.

That's the issue can hit her doubles this time. How many treble 1s has

she hit in this leg? Far too many. Tops to break back. Averaging north

of 90, 94 from Winstanley but it is the doubles that have caused the

trouble. She needs to settle down, she can't afford to let this get

into her head. Zero out of five now. Brooks is way back, though. Surely

she will not make a hash of this. So, attempt number six at 44

Lorraine Winstanley. Double 5. And the chance goes again. This is

starting to get damaging. 169, no checkout of course.

Yet another treble 1. I think a fifth of the leg. Double 2. Where

has that gone? The 10th throw at double finally

lands and we are back on serve. I think there would have been a quiet

thank goodness for that when she got that in. Her game is really good

apart from her doubles. You could see that from the different in the

almost 85, the first nine dart average just under the tonne.

Lisa Ashton, I am mixing up all the names, we give her so much credit

for how she has played in the last couple of years, coming off big

games with big finishes, averaging between 82 and 87, taking out a

third of doubles and that is what we just support from Lorraine

Winstanley. That scoring was like, I mean, the darts did not wonder, nice

and straight. The only thing was, a bit scrappy on the doubles. When she

got settled in and was hitting the doubles she really, really good game

of darts. Ended up hitting one out of every three doubles, at one stage

it was down at ten, 12% so it shows she got better and better. Average

84, if she had hit the doubles that average would have been higher. She

played really solid darts. Never in trouble, let's bring her end, what a

performance, just saying, post-84 average, almost 101st nine dart

average, 33% of checkouts, you will take that? Every time. I have lost

my voice, I am squeaking! Does shouting at your husband do that?

All the time. You are in the batch of players that we think it she

plays like we know she can play, she might win the title. I am very

pleased with how I have played today. I put the work in and it paid

times I needed a good shot, was scoring 60, hitting a few wires, a

lot of bounce outs which didn't help which add to my nerves but I got

because he thinks he should win every game. In this format you

cannot win quickly. You have to play good darts. Some guys try to push

the game so they get it over with. But best of seven, nice and easy,

throw as you practice, the panic. Don't look at the other guy. Like

that. Let's get back down to someone who is always calm and composed.

nobody knows, let's find out. COMMENTATOR: If you've been with us

all the way since the opening match on Saturday afternoon and are having

a look at that man on the stage, the man in the raid top, the man from

Wales, the man seeded 12, and wondering who is that, have we seen

him before? You could be forgiven for thinking that because you last

saw him at 1pm on Saturday afternoon. That is when Jim Williams

last played and beat Tony O'Shea in the first round. Here he is again,

many hours and days later, playing his second round match. If you have

been with us since Saturday afternoon and were with us last

night, you will recognise the other bloke on stage, the tall, thin

Dutchmen Wesley Harms. Twice a semifinalist of course but he only

played last night. Stand-by for a very match. Two young

players really at the helm. This is anyone's match, should be very even.

I was speaking to Wesley a few moments ago backstage and he says he

does everything the same every day he is here. Gets up at the same

time, brushes his teeth at the same time, get stressed that the same

time, breakfast at the same time. The only things he does different on

a match day is he does not go swimming because it makes his hands

feel slippery. He thinks it affects his darts. It has helped him anyway

and so far... Wesley Harms, nicknamed Sparky. The

number five seed. Had a great victory over England's

Tony O'Shea. A young lad. Plays his county darts.

This would be a fine way to start. Unlucky! A better finish here for

Williams. Could go for bullseye. Tops.

They have both missed tops of low with one dart. There is the double

10 which secures the first leg for Wesley Harms. First came here as the

13th seed in 2012. Reached the semifinals. Almost the first maximum

of the match from Jim Williams. Wesley Harms lost that semifinal 6-5

to Tony O'Shea who he beat on Saturday. Next year he came back and

met Guess who? And lost that 6-4, Tony O'Shea. But Wesley has

disappointed the last couple of times he's been here. Tony Eccles

beat him in 2014 and he was a first-round loser as the eighth seed

last year. Jim Williams, tongue with his first six darts.

Young and old, they are out today. Oh yes! Wants the finish.

Despite that 177, he could not believe a finish. Wesley Harms. That

one was going for the 25 and CHEERING AND BOOING

treble 18. One more dart at double top. Yes.

Wesley at the helm at the moment, the first two legs. Straight into

the treble 19. Not once but twice. Talk about Wesley Harms Lakeside

pedigree, this is only a second visit here for Jim Williams. Did not

win set last year in the first round. Again seeded, 16. He will

feel an awful lot better about life. Having won the opening match of the

championship on Saturday afternoon. And he had a few days to bask in his

glory. Leaves the finish. Almost took it

out in the first leg of the match. If he can do it now he will win the

first set remember first 24-mac sets in the second round. Cannot know

finish finish but will be back. Still on 270, Williams. Needs to get

fourth. But first things first, let win this set. Don't want to let

Wesley Harms get clear daylight between you and him on the

scoreboard. Treble 17 the shot. 142 for Jim

Williams. Could do with this to hold his throw but he won't take it out

this time. 72 for a fourth leg in a row. He's done this before. OK, Jim,

take it away. 20, double 16. Double 8. Got to get it and he has. Well

done. He is on the board. Crucially holding his throw and winning his

first leg of the match. Looks very determined. It has lightened up

anyway, that double. Here we go, yes! The first maximum

of the match. They are still cheering it. They are

enjoying it and so they should. Two youngsters. This is to break the

throw. No, not this time. What a good last dart. Treble 14. Treble

13... Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. And that chance now to level the

match. Some noise from the audience. He is back, you can tell from his

body language, can't you, Jim Williams. Hitting the double 8 in

the first leg of this set did him the power of good.

Good marker. Seems to be rushing. Have you noticed? You can get quick.

Just trying to chase a bit of rhythm. Maybe the nerves from the

youngster, Jim Williams. We'll be on an outshot Abdullah swung. -- after

this one. Did not see him after his match, he had himself away in the

private players room. This to break back. His finishing

has been excellent. Saves this set. Seeming to fall forward, not

balanced there. Look at this, more direct. Now look at this. The back

leg comes up, sometimes shakes him off-balance.

The OK... He won't be finishing now. Chance for Jim Williams.

I thought that was in. To save the set. Yes, another terrific finish.

Jim the Turkish and Antwerp open champion. Number 12 seed this year.

Look at those checkouts, five out of eight for Wesley Harms. Yes, very

consistent on the finishing. Right back he can be and he is today. He

has been around a long time. He's only been punished once for a Mr

double. -- missed. Into a deciding leg. So far it's a good set for Jim

Williams. And no response, as yet, from Wesley

Harms. 139 ahead plus these. What a good leg here. It is a long time

since I've seen that, four hundreds on the trot. Doesn't need it this

visit. He feels the pain but no out shot.

For Wesley Harms. Early on it looked like Wesley Harms

would run away with this. But well played, Jim Williams, he hung in

there in the second set and look at this.

wants to make sure he wins it now. No. Headaches for his family. Double

top. This is no fun. Double 1. They call

it the madhouse. No. Double 10. It's all happening. He won't finish. Back

comes Williams. He has put the pressure on Harms. My

goodness me. He missed seven doubles, Jim Williams, before

hitting that double 1. Wesley Harms must be kicking himself but right

now it is Williams with all the momentum. Really having a go. He

might go for trouble 18. Yes. -- treble 18. It is not happening for

Wesley. There is a short, three-minute or

so, break after this set. Not a very nice throw there but he still has

the advantage. Even though he has hit 57 and 27 with his last two

throws. The marker is good. Even if he doesn't take this leg, he will be

throwing first in the next to wrap up the set against the darts. It is

not happening for Wesley. And 178 is not a finish.

This would be the highest of the championship. Would have been. But

he can take a big chunk out of it. He went for the bull. Can't finish.

This is for the set. Double 8. Double 4. Oh! Wesley is still in it.

Tops for Wesley Harms and he needs it. He is not hitting his doubles

like he was in the first set. That is a huge sigh of relief. What a

great leg of the arts but not for Jim Williams. -- leg of darts. It is

absorbing for the crowd. Jim Williams had two macro darts for

the set in the last leg. But this time round he has the darts.

Needs to get over the top, well done. Wesley Harms needs to do more

than that. Can't make his mind up. Thinking,

what shall I do? He did well. It's a finish. 82 for Jim Williams.

What can he do? Double 16. For the set, yes! Jim Williams takes charge

of this second round match at Lakeside, coming from one set down

and now leading 2-1. STUDIO: Cagey first couple of sets

as we take a short break. What a man to fill any break, Mr

Bobby George. We said earlier that when he played as he was earlier,

Lorraine Winstanley showed the health of women starts, so by the

same token of honesty, not a huge amount to get excited by, I have

never seen Wesley score so badly. He doesn't seem settled. The pace of

the game is the same. It's like a train going up the hill. The scoring

is almost identical. The finishing was a bit scruffy

and got better but not an exciting game. There is no explosion in it.

the rhythm and grabbing it by the scruff of the neck. Nothing really

exciting. It is boring in a way. But by that token, Jim deserves his lead

after going behind. There were two finishes in particular, the start of

the third set, he had to get it done, not the biggest out shot but

doing it in two darts. That was the little edge that put him in the

lead. Wesley can get a bit sulky if he goes behind. He needs to start

easing up a bit. He has to play as he did when he started because he

played OK. But he does get like that. You can get at him if you get

in front of him. Jim should do that, he definitely has the demeanour of

someone who is used to playing here. He wants to get on with the game. He

is up and down the oche. He is that fast, he wants to get on with it

quick. I would slow fast, he wants to get on with it

is what they need, but it fast, he wants to get on with it

to be close. Wesley doesn't have to fast, he wants to get on with it

do a huge amount to get back in it. Every time there is a break, it can

help you if you are not playing so well. Grab a hold of yourself? They

Unlike Wesley Harms, Jim struggled when he first played on that stage

12 months ago. He only won one leg. He did not hit a 180. He was kind of

cross with himself when he came off stage. It was important for him,

first up on Saturday afternoon, to make a good account of himself

against Tony O'Shea. He has done that, and again, in this match, he

has found a way back into the match. Having lost the first set badly. He

is enjoying himself now. Good marker for another. He is on a finish, 101.

Remember that he is winning 2-1 at the moment. He took out 140 to beat

Tony O'Shea and 82 in the last leg. But not this time are no big one.

OK, Wesley. Double 8. Yes! What a brilliant outshot under pressure. It

has got that sort of feel about it. It could be close, this one. I am

getting excited. It's brilliant, I like it. He will come down. You are

right, sometimes when perhaps the standard of scoring and finishing is

not the highest, if it is a decent scrap, it's really entertaining in

its own right. Sometimes more exciting. It's a bit like Welshman

Alun Evans when he played. Excitement? He did everything.

It was a great Welshman, Leighton Rees, who won the first world title.

Won't finish now. Still a lot to do for Jim Williams to win this leg.

Yes! This is great finishing from Wesley Harms. We saw it in the first

set. He likes the bull. He lost it for a while but he seems to have

rediscovered, Sparky has got his spark back. It looks like we going

all the way, 2-0 in this set to Wesley Harms.

He is in it again, this is a good leg. Three tonnes on the trot, 104

left. Yes. 12, double 16. Just on the

inside. Chance for Wesley. This is for the set.

Double 8. Come on, one to go. Yes! Of the barrel but who cares? -- off

the barrel. Wesley likes to get on with it.

Having taken out 96 and 81 in the first two legs of the set, we were

slightly surprised Wesley failed to take out the much more

straightforward 80, especially having hit treble 20 with his first

dart. But he has the darts, he is throwing first and this is to level

the match if he wins this leg come at 2-2.

58 and 60. He is being let off a little bit here. He needs an awful

lot better than that because he must break the throw to stay alive in

this set. That's better. Treble 20, treble 18, double 16 would do.

Double 16. This would hurt Wesley. Wesley's opportunity now. 16 leaves

double 16. And it's there. All square in sets,

2-2, what a match. Here we go. 2-2 in a race to four.

And there is an early opportunity for Jim Williams. It sure is but

that has blocked it. I would have gone for 19s. The second dart was

really blocked out. But gone for 19s. The second dart was

there! How are your darts? Not too bad. A bit rusty! We should have a

game. I'd go for OK. Trailing by 56 points before the

throw. Williams with 121 with a ton. Still going, brilliant marker. 81

been taking these out. Double top is not really working for him and nor

is double 10 on this occasion. You have got to take those out, you

have to take those opportunities. He has only hit it twice out of ten

attempts now. Five comes to his rescue.

Jim had so many opportunities. He only has himself to blame. A mild

cameraman on camera number two. He has been here every year since the

start, I think. It's a bit involved, this, but

Wesley Harms is called Sparky because he used to be an

I really get enjoyment when I get a match like this. It is absolutely

us watching, the tension goes high and the excitement goes higher. I am

that is what I call it. Terrific match ladies and gentlemen, let's

hear it for both players, Jim Williams, and through to the

quarterfinals, Sparky, Wesley Harms! Wesley managing to get out of harms

way but only just against Jim Williams. But it was the double that

counted and a smile on the face of his girlfriend, Yolande, when he

landed that double 1. Bobby George, to be fair to Sparky, he improved

when he can back after the break enough to get the job done. The last

set was more exciting. Jim missed a few double 16 s. Then he got in

front and he could not catch him in the end. That is what the 180 at the

end did. But he deserved it. It was an exciting game at the end. It was

was he going to win, was Wesley going to win, was Jim going to win?

Were is that Wesley that we know is their? We have seen it so many times

on the Lakeside state. He probably finishes in the 90 on average

overall. He is going to have to produce it to get further in this

tournament. 85, 86 average, wasn't very good at all. If he doesn't

approve that he will not go any further. You have got to be in the

90s at every stage of the game. You can get a little bit lucky, you

never know, but normally, 92-96, then you have got some chance of

performing well. We can talk about Wesley, who is alongside us now.

Talking about the positive points of the performance. You had to battle

of their, and you are too-1 down at the break. What do you say to

scoring wise, it went all right. Missed a few doubles. At the end, it

came in. And I won the game. The checkout percentage was good, at

40%. You were hitting some doubles when they really mattered. Yes, I

focused myself on hitting that one dart at the double if I need to. And

I need a little bit of pressure, I guess. I wonder, is that it? Have we

seen the best of Sparky up there, when you are playing against someone

who is hanging in 180 and 140, but you have got that in you, you're

like a tiger that way, you will rise and we will see the real Sparky. To

be fair, Bobby sees me and as soon as someone hits the Troubles and

doubles I can hit it as well. I just go with the player. When I need to

level up or reach up for something, I can do that. It was interesting,

going back to when we first met you, to come back looking for DVDs from

every game and studying them. Have you still got that fire when the and

the past history of Lakeside, the name that nobody thought would ever

be back here was John Boye Walton. He managed to get through the

qualifiers before, in his first round, in his prelim match he had an

average of over 90, then he came up against a guy that is popular on the

BBDO tour, finally doing it at the Lakeside. Brian Dawson against John

Walton, and it went all the way to two sets all. And John Boye has the

advantage as we bring you some more darts to fill up the spare time that

we have, because Wesley got the job done.

Both of them averaging highly in their finishes. But it is more than

that. They have taken them out in key situations. Good response to

that 140. 180! The eighth of the match. It is high quality. Walton

went for the ball. Dawson with the darts. And a healthy advantage. But

not supplemented. He has got to win this leg, Dawson, and Walton knows

that he can put him under pressure. He will have a chance.

156 to go 2-0 up. Can't be done now. Dawson with a terrific opportunity

to square up the set. He has gone double 16 so double 12,

brilliant! Trust me, he didn't intend to do that but having got

double 16, he was flawless in his execution of double 12.

Walton will fancy his chances from here. Dawson just creaking a little

bit. This is to move with in a leg of the match. He will come back.

11th leg will be sudden death. Good game of darts. Nip and tuck. It

deserved to go all the way. Walton started superbly and had the early

advantage but what cuts from Dawson to fight back. -- what guts. A lot

of tension up there now. They have to win by two clear legs otherwise,

if it goes all the way, it is sudden death. Two great mates, won't feel

like that at the moment. Don't forget that Walton has had two macro

darts for the match. It seems a long time ago. Almost a lifetime ago in

the context of the match. You wonder if he is still thinking about it.

You hope not, for his sake. No doubt it is lodged somewhere in the psyche

and he does not need that. Dawson effectively as the darts. That is an

opportunity missed, a big opportunity missed to really turn

the screw. He has still nibbled a bit into the Walton throw, certainly

if John cannot find a treble. This is tension, nerves. Who can

withstand it better? The Walton arm has stiffened. He has got a ton on

him now. He will be disappointed after the

opening dart. It is the old pub game favourite,

Shanghai. He will come back because Walton has

had a shocker just when it matters most. It is curious sometimes. There

it is! At last he is in front. It could be a decisive strike if he

holds his throw, it is Dawson's match. What a batch and now real

pressure on John Walton. That was not good. Where is that treble,

John? He is only finding it when the pressure is off. Sweating up in the

paddock a little bit, just dabbing the brow. This is good from Dawson.

Very close to another 180. Brian Dawson can almost taste it now.

Maybe we are not done yet. Either way, it is my guess that these two

will have a celebratory pint, whatever the result. It has been a

terrific contest. Another huge hit from Dawson. I wouldn't be pouring

Double 16. A brilliant match, a fabulous finish and Brian Dawson

finally downs John Boyle Walton in an absolute cracker. 3-2. John Boy

through. That was so good, it was ridiculous, we couldn't take our

eyes off it. What was it like to be in it and win it? To be in it,

painful! But to win it, amazing. Absolutely amazing. What can I say?

Phenomenal game. I think it was but I can't remember my games, but he

doesn't give up. Neither do you. Where do you get that dogged

determination to not wilt under the pressure and think come OK, he's got

me? Somehow you got back into it? He is a great champion but I never feel

as if he has got me tonight, nobody has ever got me until they put in

the final double. It's the final double that counts and I will never

give up and if they miss, I am coming. He will have to come again

tonight against Jeff Smith. We know what he will do, average about 93

and check out at about 40%! He is like a limpet, Jeff Smith. Would you

dare to predict that? Dawson played good last night. John Walton did

beat him up in the first couple of sets and he came back and played

well. It is almost the same sort of level now. That bit extra he has

got, he can hit his shots out, Jeff Smith. We are getting back before

Dennis Harbour. A lot of respect on stage. The experience of Martin

Phillips? He has been playing for years. And Harbour has as well,

Harbour is very slow. Phillips just gets on with his game, no messing

about. It is like going for a walk! He is like hundred, hundred,

hundred, Harbour will slow him down. He takes him down. He is a hard

guide to play against. -- guy. He can win games you wouldn't think he
