What an exciting and brilliant match. I love this trophy. I love

day of my life! I will do everything in my power to keep holding this

trophy. I will do anything to keep my hands on this trophy. Lisa Ashton

people use tinder to light fires. A real mixed bag today. Looking

forward to it, the youth, they put on a good show but both world

champions, the winners, we want to see if they can retain it or lose it

title in a row... But when it comes to title she has a long way to go to

match her opponent today, Trina Gulliver has 9 of them. We begin in

the future. The BDO youth final, a 16 -year-old garish darts not

against a 17 -year-old English hotshot. -- Irish darts not.

Jordan Boyce, I am 16, I am from Donegal Ireland and my nickname is

bullet-proof. Hopefully I can do it on the big stage today.

I am Joshua Richardson, 17, from Rushton in Northamptonshire and my

nickname is stealth. I am quiet and let the darts of the talking.

My dad played county for years. He got me into them. I practice around

3 or 4 hours a day, maybe more. I play a lot in local leagues, nearly

every night. My dad got me into playing darts when I was about 8. My

grandparent Peter, my dad's dad got him into darts, it is a family

thing. My granny and grandad, my auntie and uncle... They are coming

over, hopefully they can shout from the crowd. I am really looking

forward to it. Sitting in a lot of practice recently. Hope it pays off.

wait to get out there and hopefully do the job. Not just in the way they

look, it feels like we have a little bit of a David and collide. Joshua

is 8 or 9 days away from his 18th birthday, Jordan, the Irish boy,

turned 16 and quite freshfaced and Jordan, in getting here, the best of

5 lakes, he had 3, 3- 2, Joshua only lost 3 legs. It is interesting. They

have got no nerves. They get up and played darts, don't worry about the

nerves. It's important. That is the played darts, don't worry about the

if we were that age but they've have been playing since they were 10 or

Joshua has been playing darts since he was 8. That is 9 years of darting

Even though he is the younger man, playing for 3 years more.

This would be something, he is cross with themselves, he fancied it. Well

Quite if you lose darts, I think they are rushing a little bit,

nerves, obviously. But the standard, despite that, it's

average is don't look great but that's only because we have had a

lot of missed doubles. It took Jordan 6 darts to hit his 1st

double, since then, he has only missed twice and Joshua has hit 2

as quick as quick as Jordan Boyce? He is a youngster and I think you

will find the speed is nervous more than anything. In this case, no, he

is really fast. Quick brain as well. He knows his way around the board. I

am very impressed with both of them. I mean come on the television, first

time up there. All of to content with. We were saying before we came

on air on BBC Two this afternoon that we were not sure what to

expect. We were hoping it would be a decent standard but we certainly did

not know it would be and we were confident it would be, and it is.

The only thing, accusation you would level against them, to improve their

finishing. That is the same with the professionals, at times.

by anything darts throws at him. He sees the game differently when he is

playing come he manages to get to hate whoever he is playing. I want

to hate his guts when I'm up there. I will not like him. You have no

friends up there. He is who he is and he plays the way he plays, and

that's why he is here, because he is so good at doing that. You think, I

want to win it once, just once and you feel your life would be

events, as at the PDC events, a great spirit of camaraderie between

the players. It is one of the most appealing things about covering

darts, commentating on darts, there is not many wrong ones, they are

The opening set. The average just dropping slightly in the closing

stages. For much of it, he was way over 100, as high as 109 at 1 stage,

fact that he has taken the opening set. The 1st 1 to reach four. Here

double and the way McGeeney is playing, he cannot afford to miss

renovating some fabulous 1980s kit, it touches around 200 miles an hour,

not, of course, he would ever drive it like that. He loves his speedway.

He is a big friend of Nigel Pearson, the speedway commentator and

sometimes darts commentator. Completely forgot about the VAT on

the tractor he bought for his father. The dealer said, you have

got to give it to us, he said, it is a bit difficult, I gave you all the

money, so they help themselves to 2 or 3 things lying around the

farmyard and that was the end of the story! It is a great story, isn't

it? He has got 100 grand. None of us like VAT but unfortunately, 1 of the

appearances. Fair to say he has enjoyed his 12 month as world

champion. He said to me, it was never about money with me. It is

just about competing and throwing darts for the love of it. The taxman

and the VAT man will want to know a little bit about it! Sadly, some may

say! Lost is his 1st round on the 1st 3 appearances at Lakeside.

Everybody knows what a great player he was and everybody would say, he

produce his best game on the Lakeside stage, the

all of a sudden, credit to a hypnotherapist, he came back last

year and actually, literally, he was invincible. His hypnotherapist has

advice from Bobby George. Telling him to slow down, take your time,

especially in the semifinal against Jeff Smith when the sharpshooting

might be 1 of those matches which goes all the way, this 1. Very, well

matched, Scott Mitchell and Mark McGeeney. Mark McGeeney not terribly

well known to the wider darting public, this is his Lakeside debut

but he can throw and people within the sport know it.

He won the British Open last year. Mark McGeeney beat Scott Waites in

the final. Also reached the semifinals in the world trophy and

the Isle of Man and Sweden. Gets around a bit. You have to, on this

tour, picking up ranking points. McGeeney making his debut as 1 of

the seeds and Mitchell has a checkout opportunity, a good 1st

dart. All he can do is put some pressure

on and Mitchell will come back with 56 to win the leg and square the

match. Let's see if he can do it. This is a moment.

Game, shot and the 2nd set, Scott Mitchell. Mark to throw 1st, game

on. Scott Mitchell hip the doubles when

he needed to. Mitchell was on fire in that opening set. Mitchell able

to pounce. Decent averages. Not world shattering. Mitchell is on

level terms. Really interesting match. McGeeney with the advantage

on the checkout. A little bit of momentum in the game of Scott

Mitchell. Here we go again. 180! During macro

his 4th of the match. Scott Mitchell has had 1 too. -- CHEERING

anticipating that he might be struggling to try and chip away to

get a break. At 180 from McGeeney really helping him. He has just

between them. McGeeney with the Gladiator

nickname. He is playing like 1, isn't he? He is a gentle sort of

soul away from the ochie but he is certainly playing with plenty of

fire and commitment. Scott Mitchell just said, talking to

himself, if you stay straight, you have half a chance. He is always

talking to himself. He is parading himself. I am not sure if you are

taking this up at home. It is good value. Some people do that, engaging

conversation. He is only straight out of the 20, once in this leg. It

is not exactly a bag of nails, he is throwing pretty well and he is

ahead. Good. That is unlucky. A wry smile.

There is his son. Sam, hoping that dad brings home a victory but

McGeeney has other ideas. 180 CHEERING

That is his 5th. Treble 19. He has missed that

treble. McGeeney, 66. A big breakthrough if he can do this.

The wrong side of the wire. Under all sorts of pressure.

He holds it together. Smooth double top. Leaving McGeeney to rue that

missed opportunity on the double 18. He has hit his last four doubles,

Scott Mitchell and that takes bottle, especially when you have

someone on the other side of the ochie throwing a tonne 80 for fun,

like Mark McGeeney is. 6 of them in the match so far. We are only in the

3rd set. 1- 1. Could it be another? Wasn't exactly a shabby attempt. It

looked as though it was on its way. Again, a bit of a muttered to

himself. You always have to be a little bit

careful with that, with the microphone to the side of the board.

Before the watershed! I think that is for us to worry about, really,

not them! 161, it can be done... So... Double 12 to hold his throat

and move ahead in the match. It is finishing off the highest

at the moment he was throwing the dart, it is good he was in our

production truck and not out there. I have got a fairly good sneeze on

poor girl a heart attack when I had a sneeze in the Lakeside here

yesterday. She almost did not know for that was! I do not know whether

I want you to do 1 into the microphone. It is usually allergies,

it is not cause I have a cold or anything. I cannot do it to order.

costly. If he hits this double 18, there will be a short break. And he

I thought it might be close. I hoped it would be. Bobby George knew it

would be close. That is the Dazzler for you. Every year there is 1 name

that you say and every year there is 1 name that I don't. Every year you

give me a name and every year you are right. This year it was Mark

McGeeney. We saw some glimpses. We saw more than that, right from the

1st set. He is playing 96, his average. He is scoring well.

Finishing well. A confident sort of bloke. He is

quiet. Absolutely. We were playing last night. I think I would have

needed to go for 101 to stand a chance. He is right, the quiet man

backstage, gets on with it. I have been feeding through the averages

every set, I think he won the 3rd set with an average of 107.3. He is

proving that he is more than just a small patch, he is world class. He

can do it. I have watched him before so I know what. It is doing it up

there. He has played Scott Mitchell, his friend. It does not come into it

when you go out there. All he has to do is play the game like he doesn't

normally, like he is now and he will beat Scott Mitchell. If he does not,

Scott Mitchell will beat him. This 1 is going all the way, you know what

and I know what. He is checking out at about 36%, he will hang in there,

if not get better. If McGeeney hits 107 average and keeps checking out

at 62 or 63%, that will be the stuff of dreams so I see him tightening

up. It will be a humdinger this afternoon. I hope it is tied, we

want a good game and we needed. Some of the diets have not been on par.

Some of the men's gains have not up there, for sure. But a fantastic

afternoon yesterday. Smith has been great and these 2 men, going

head-to-head. We mustn't forget... Scott Waites? Sorry! Absolutely.

The thing is, with darts, if you keep missing doubles to get into bad

habits. At the moment, neither of them are missing the doubles,

really. Good work from Scott. 76, good lead. Looking favourite to hold

his throw and go ahead in this set once again. Eight set he needs to

win. 76. He has six darts from here if he wants. Yes, very nicely done.

15 darter. The crowd revelling in a good quality match.

Justin Pipe, professional, he is among those watching on. Good

player, Justin. Nice fellow as well, doesn't live far away from Gary

Anderson near Minehead, think he is a Taunton boy. There he is. Sat next

to Katie Mitchell. Good friend of Scott's, of course. They come from

the same part of the world. Give or take 100 miles. 50.

Down at the bottom, anyway. Bottom left. Other winds -- -- otherwise

known as the West. Terrific throwing from McGeeney. Maintaining the 98

average, and now the finish, 128 to make it to teach in this set. On the

throw, good start, treble 20 would leave 44. -- would leave a double

numeric form. Now he will come down the board and look at 16 is double

four. Can he take it to make it to each? This would be a 13 dart leg.

Double 8. No. Not on any finish. First time in the match McGeeney has

missed three doubles in a row. It should not really matter, with

Mitchell back on 178. Shakes his head in frustration as he cannot

find in all importance treble and is still a long way back. Double 8 from

McGeeney. That is five he has missed. No! No score. This is a set

point, this would be massive. It is a must get from McGeeney

because Mitchell will come back on tops if he cannot take this at. Can

he get closer? The last two were nowhere near. Double four. Will he

get better luck here? The pain is clear to see. This is to take the

set, and level the match. Yes, you didn't really doubt it is, did you?

-- you didn't. The mark of a champion. He is thinking, how could

I lose that? He knows he could not find those doubles. It is a Mitchell

celebration, 2-2. He had never previously missed more than one

double. In a row. Never missed to. That was nine. It is the game, if

you get the opportunities you got to take them. Otherwise it can cost you

big. What were you saying about bad habits? Absolutely.

Having some fun. Great stuff for the crowd. They are enjoying the

atmosphere. And when it comes to the sporting aspect, it is terrific

stuff. Mitchell prevailed on that occasion. Batman and Robin taking

would have felt like a boom to Mark McGeeney when Mitchell hit it. He

knocking on 100. But all of those missed doubles, and his fourth set

average on its own is not quite 90. Wanted rather better than 38. His

throw will be under huge pressure because Mitchell is stacking up a

solid ton while leaving him 176, a maximal 170 needed. Treble 20 from

bull. For the best check out on the board, 170 from Mark McGeeney. I

thought he might do it, five maximums and a 177 and a 174. 76 is

what Mitchell needs. Double 18. Grazed the wire. Thought it was in,

Mitchell does not quite fit the mould. He did when he first used to

come here and lose meekly in the first round. Not any more. Apologies

to all owners of the noble breed of the Scottie. I think even the

Scottie dog owners would admit they zap. -- yap. They certainly do when

they get excited. Little characters as well, they can be feisty little

individuals. Anyway, on with the darts! Enough of Crufts. That was

eight Kay and 99 from McGeeney. -- K99. Mitchell's throw under

pressure. McGeeney hits 140, it will be a lot of pressure. Going for a

teens, because one site -- 162 is a buggy number -- bogeyed number. It

is team, so 164 is the finish and would be the highest of the

tournament so far. Should he hit this?

dart! High quality from the world champion. Hits the doubles when he

needs to. Daughter lives every moment with him, doesn't she? I

think she loves it, she really enjoys the matches here watching her

dad. She is not the only one. Become a very popular figure in the darting

Presumably for Dorset? Future star, then, perhaps. The daughter of the

world champion and another future star we watched earlier this

afternoon, if you saw it on BBC Two, Jordan boys who came within a leg or

two becoming the use world champion, just lost out to Joshua Richardson.

Signing his first autographs aged 16. Still has two years of school

left. You can imagine what will happen

when he gets back now. Jordan, sign this, sign my exercise book! Jordan,

three figure check out but it does not matter because Scott is having a

lead off, to be honest. Nothing between these players,

really. So well matched. Treble would leave double 18. Maybe go for

12 year? Nope. Leaving himself 66. Mitchell is miles away. You can see,

strangely, 66, but he is confident with it can plenty of time. Scott is

well back. Straight in, first dart. It is actually two out of two 466 on

McGeeney in this match. That is why he left it.

Some players favour different doubles, don't they? Some prefer 18

or 16. Some golfer tops -- some goal for tops. Scott Mitchell chooses to

finish. No maximum, but 140, 140 is emphatic

at the start of a leg, especially when you have the darts. And the leg

you have to win to keep the set alive. Let's see if he can do it

again. Why not? Three in a row. And 11 dart leg would be nice. But not

strictly necessary. No, you would not want to waste any time. It makes

a statement as well. Treble 19, double 12 will be the shot. Now

looking for treble 18, perhaps, or treble 10 would have left double 16.

Not often you see 250 points worth of difference. At this level. Only

had 12 darts, and now tops to make it 2-2. Still McGeeney not only

You can see those stats, 80% McGeeney, 70% Mitchell when they are

throwing first. It does matter. Of course it matters. McGeeney holds

his throw, he wins the set, goes at 3-2 ahead, first four Free Place in

the quarterfinals. Great first dart. He has just

blocked a little, chooses to stay on it. Surprised he did not change the

target. 2-2. Nothing to separate them in points. We told you it might

be close. Good dart. Treble 20. That is a tea

scored. There is 140. -- there is 80 scored. That could be a big 80 point

lead that Michoacan out -- Mitchell carved out. One that might make

McGeeney twitchy. And it has. This is a chance from Mitchell. Six darts

from 201 for the set. That is a great final dart. Needed it.

McGeeney has got to get a big hit otherwise Mitchell really is a hot

favourite to take this potentially set winning leg. 59 is not

Goodenough. -- is not good enough. Treble 19 for double 12, yes, this

is for the set from Mitchell. 164. That is a serious check out.

Mitchell is poised, if he cannot do it he knows he has likely lost the

set now, 3-2 down if Michoacan check out the 24th. No reason why not. He

has done well on his doubles. Here he goes. He has hit the doubles that

have mattered so far. And does it again. The family know it, he knows

it, that was a big dart because look who is throwing first. And

it, that was a big dart because look is leading the matter the first

time, 3-2, and as a Vassos says, with the darts now, he is now

favourites to win this match. Can McGeeney dig deep and, again? -- and

come again. A reminder, the winner of this one

will play either Martin Atkins or Richard Aziz struck -- or Richard

Veenstra who are in action this evening. That is in the

quarterfinals, that will be a good match. Absolutely. Both of them are

in the last 16 and whoever wins this against whoever wins that in the

quarters. He rather likes being world champion, Scott Mitchell. Even

when McGeeney was absolutely flying earlier in the match, we did say

Mitchell would take an awful lot of beating. It has proved to be true.

He is ahead and is throwing big numbers again. He is having the same

sort of match as he did against Craig Caldwell

sort of match as he did against Caldwell came out and threw

sort of match as he did against of fireworks at Mitchell. But he

hung in there, the world champion. Again, he yet the doubles that

mattered. Looking for treble 17. Decided not to take it out. Look at

the scoreboard. It told him McGeeney is back on 281 and has left his

double 12 again. Probably good thinking. No need to check it out,

he is not going to get a shot at it now. There he goes again.

Looks relaxed up there, Scott Mitchell, absolutely in control of

himself, in control of his emotions. He has experience of tight matches

drawn, not least the final last year against Martin Adams.

I wonder what he is thinking, Veenstra. He will be interested, but

he will know before this evening began that he will face one heck of

a match. He has a bit of work to sort out first for he gets through

you sense he will have to win this leg. -- if McGeeney will win. And

then somehow find a way to break. Indeed. He is going for 14.

McGeeney is feeling it. I think he is still thinking about

that double 16. He has got away with it. 100, not too much damage done.

Get the double 16 out of your mind. Very nice visit, especially after

the 1st dart. McGeeney has to take this leg, let me remind you.

McGeeney has thrown really well. But has he just crumbled a touch?

The crowd are with Mitchell, he is feeling it as well. The finishing

line is inside. At times today, McGeeney has been unplayable. -- in

sight. He took out 130. He 1st threw the 1st set 3- 0. But now Mitchell,

treble 20... Mitchell would have been the big

favourite but I don't think so now. McGeeney is 70 away from holding his

throw. How much pressure on this 70? It is

huge, I tell you. Great darts... Double 8...

Big score needed. And a big score on its way... Is it the biggest? Not

quite. Handy, though. A lead of the better part of a tonne. Mitchell

Mitchell is not on a finish. He will be back. He certainly will,

his favourite double, double 18. Well... Just about managed to

struggle on to a finish, McGeeney, for the said...

Game, shot and the 6th set, Mark McGeeney. Anne-Marie, his wife,

looking happy. Scott Mitchell knows that it is going to be the deciding

set. 3- 3, going all the way. The 2 of them touched fists like

fighters. They know they have had a tremendous tussle. We have enjoyed

it up here. And I think they are enjoying it up on that stage. The

averages have not been world shattering but it has been an

excellent match which has gone this way and that. And the 2 of them

locked together, right down towards the climax of this match. The

averages, both of them, around 92%, pretty good, not sensational. But it

does not tell the story. A great game of darts.

Whose nerve is going to crack? McGeeney has been safer on his own

throw. Not by a great deal. That is a bit ordinary. Yes, the

last leg and a half, I wonder what has happened to his scoring? And so

does he. With Mitchell back on 256, 118 to

hold his throw at the start of this deciding said.

has to be a 2 legged margin be for 1 or other is declared the winner, if

it goes 5- 5, they take the bull's-eye 1st sudden death. -- for

sudden death. McGeeney is just riding the crest of a wave of

momentum. Taking us into the deciding set. Hitting double 12. The

1st time of asking. If he can't highly in a couple of big score is

here, this momentum, this wave that he is currently on, Scott Mitchell

wiping the sweat from his brow. Mark McGeeney may be the fitter man and

that may be a factor, it is very warm up they are and they had been

playing for 75 minutes. It is not about going in and mailing big

numbers, it is a long course and you have to maintain concentration. And

not be upset by the conditions which are warm, you can see beads of

perspiration on Scott Mitchell. McGeeney goes looking for another

maximum. He will take 140. He leads by the hundred and 20. 121,

very makeable. Treble 20 with the 1st dart... If he misses that, he

goes looking for treble 17. If he gets a 5, of course, it goes out of

the window. Good last dart. Must take this out, really, Scott

Mitchell. He cannot. Double 18, for a break of throw.

McGeeney, on his favourite double. What a great opportunity.

Staring down the barrel, Mark McGeeney is poised for victory. Is

the reign of Scott Mitchell coming to an end? McGeeney throwing for the

match... He finds the treble with that 3rd

dart. Crucially... Needs the resolve of the champion

now, doesn't he? He needs some champion darts and they are pretty

good. He will not go quietly, Scott Mitchell, no question about that.

But it might not be... There might not be anything he can do about it

if Mark McGeeney keeps finding the trebles. 140, looking like a minimum

requirement. That will hurt. And McGeeney...

Remember, this is his Lakeside debut, seeded 11. Heading, perhaps,

to victory over the defending champion. That is unlucky! Heading

for treble 20. Would have left him on a finish. As it happens, Scott

Mitchell has a glimmer of hope. He needed 140 but it was not going to

be there. 209. He has got to get a treble... That is loose.

happy, not 1 little bit. They are happy and Scott Mitchell has the

to take it out. Was that nervousness, tension? You bet! What

a match! Mitchell taking a gulp of water,

trying to stay cool up there. Scott Mitchell wins this, it is a Houdini

like performance. Brilliant. A tonne 40 Gibson advantage, maybe again,

unless McGeeney goes up and smashes 180. Scott Mitchell seems cam. I

think he is flooding across the surface, so really, like a swan and
