Quarter-Finals Darts: World Championships

Speaking of mouth organs, we say about... A couple of champions. We

are not going anywhere until we see the identity of our 1st 2

semifinalists. The 1st quarterfinal sees Wesley

Harms bang the drum is. Hoping he can re- find that kind of form

again. Standing in his way is Jamie Hughes. The darts to be adored,

hell-bent in showing the nation why he is ranked four. An absolute

belter. Bent around, so far, made of stone, but facing his toughest task

yet, Scott Waites, the resurrection, the 2013 champion, fit for the 1st

time in ages, he will fancy it today. 1st up, it is Hamas against

Hughes and it is fair to say Jamie feels he has a point to prove.

He spoke to Rob Walker. Congratulations, we talk about your

1st Lakeside quarterfinal. After both matches, you have said to me in

the players bar, I have not good enough, that was not good enough.

People might look at the results and think I am playing well but I know I

am only playing probably 2nd gear. There are more gears to come but

it's been good enough so far. If it is needed, I can pull it out. What

makes you believe you have a better game in you? I won a tournament in

the Sun called the British pentathlon. No ranking points but

it's prestigious. You play all day. It's over a very long format. That

is where I know I can play better. That is where comes from. How

excited are you to have this opportunity to take on Wesley Harms

for a place in the semifinals? I'm really looking forward to it, it is

over a longer format and hopefully I can relax a bit more and my capital

a game will come out. What would it mean to get into the semifinals?

That was the aim when I came, because you automatically get an

invite next year which would mean I would not have to travel around as

much, I could pick and choose. And the big hump up in prize money means

a lot. It would mean everything. The best of luck. Thank you. Nobody can

separate these two, whether you are the bookies or looking at the stats.

Not much between them. Maybe experience is one thing and it is

4-3 in the head-to-head at worth noting that Wesley Harms has won the

last four. If you look at Jamie's record, 3-0 against Ross Montgomery,

he beat Gary Robson, but what we have seen, he is beside himself with

anger at how he has played. He has not played well but he has got this

far not playing well because his opponents have been worse. He has

got to buck his ideas up because if he wins he has a tough game next

time. His average is 83, 86, that's not good enough. Glen Durrant is

around mid 90s, so is Scott Waites. I saw him this morning and he said

he was up for it and he was going to smash it to bits. He is a good

player, he is, but he has not performed. He didn't have too.

Because they are so equal, obviously one has two up their game. It is a

tight game but it won't be high-scoring. I hope you're wrong!

So do I, but it will be close because their talent is the same but

one has to go up a bit. Wesley has gone all the way in each of his

games. If it is down to a close one, all this week he is battle hardened

to that. He had a tougher game but he hit the doubles and he won. As a

match, it wasn't exciting but I'm looking forward to see how they

play. I think we might see the real Wesley or Jamie.

Championships. It is quarterfinals day here at the home of world darts,

the Lakeside! CHEERING We now introduced, from the

Netherlands, twice a Lakeside semifinalist and former World Cup

singles champion, the reigning German Masters and England Open

champion, it is Sparky Wesley Harms! We now welcome to the stage current

England international and former world Masters finalist, the reigning

Romanian classic, Swedish Open and Jersey classic champion, it is the

boy from the Black Country, Jamie Hughes!

Both Wesley Harms and Jamie Hughes, it is time for the tungsten to do

the talking. For one the semifinal and some form of redemption but for

the other no more excuses. Exercising their gob for the BBC,

Tony Green and Bastos Alexander. COMMENTATOR: Quarterfinals at the

Lakeside and who do you fancy? The 29-year-old from Tipton in the West

Midlands, in his first ever Lakeside quarterfinal, or the 31-year-old who

has twice been to the semifinals, Sparky Wesley Harms from Holland? He

got to the semifinals on debut in 2012 and again in 2013 but an early

exit in each of the past two years. Jamie Hughes, this is all a bit of a

bonus, he has never been beyond the second round before this week. A

place in the semifinals up for grabs, England against Holland.

Ladies and gentlemen, the best of nine sets, it is Jamie to throw

first, came on. It is the number four seed Jamie Hughes getting as

under way. -- game on. Who do you fancy? Wesley, to be honest, but you

never know. I think the form of Wesley will show. They have met each

other seven times in the past. Jamie has won three of those and Wesley

four Hummer including the last four that they have played.

Wesley is the number five seed, Jamie Hughes is the fourth seed.

There really isn't much to separate them. Fourth seed against

fifth-seeded, they are both 30 give or take a year, Jamie has won five

ranking titles, Wesley has eight. It's early days, just trying to get

their range. That's good. The scoring in this leg, ton, 137, 134,

from Jamie Hughes. That's good. It is good. This is to hold his throw.

In the first leg of the match. 20, that leaves double 5. He pulled

that. It's the bull. It is the bull! Harm

is there. Well, well, well, what a way to

start, a 122 checkout from Wesley Harms ending on the bull, his

highest checkout of the week so far, stealing the leg against the darts.

This is a very interesting match. He needed that after two quiet visit

to the oche, Wesley Harms. Levels it off. Just 36 points.

Leaving 127, not bad, better here for Wesley. Yes, they are up and

going. 127 can be done. Treble 19 and bull. Wesley coming to the oche

for double top. That's the double shot. Two out of

two on the doubles from Wesley Harms, double top and bullseye. In

his two matches getting to this stage against Asada and Williams he

averaged 87 but is capable of a lot more. His checkout percentage was

33. The bishop is back. Oh yes! They are loving it already.

Two and the bid legs into the match and we have already had two macro

maximums -- two and a bit. Not looking very happy. Something

has happened in Rome. OK, Jamie, let's see it. No outshot for Wesley

so he will be coming back. He is trying to pressure the 78 and

doing a pretty good job. Double 16. OK, bull. Would have left

double 16 if he had hit it but as it happens... He went for 25 and bull

and he hit the bull. It's all happening. That is three missed

doubles for Jamie Hughes. But Wesley has the darts and this is for the

set. Jamie needs to beat that. Plenty of

room. Still plenty! Already up and roaring. This will do nicely.

Really good scoring. Jamie Hughes must win this leg of course. To

extend the set. Going about it very nicely just at the minute. 96

Yes, treble 19. Very near. OK, to break act and take us into a

deciding leg, there it is -- break back.

Very interesting match, who is going to take the first set? We will learn

shortly. Jamie Hughes only averaged 83 in his

first two matches. He did what he needed to do to get past Montgomery

and Madars Razma but this is much better. 140, ton, and remember, this

is for the first set. You would not expect to get through to the

semifinals of the World Championship averaging south of 90. Not really.

That will take Hughes's average above 100. They are all up in the

air now. 81. For an 11th dart leg and the set. Treble 19, double 12.

He is feeling it now! First to five sets in the

quarterfinals. Each set the first to three legs. Lots of time for lots of

moment swings but at the moment it is all with Jamie Hughes. The lad

from the Black Country hitting the red bit. How does it feel to win a

But Wesley Harms is first to finish here. That would have equalled the

highest checkout of the week so far. Another shot out. Troubled 20. He's

matches anywhere. He has been magic. The overall average of four Harms is

98.6. Jamie Hughes missed his first three darts at the doubles but has

seeing a little bit of history? He has been feeling it. He has been

hitting them. Can he take out 141? It was feared to be done. -- it was

there to be done. What has he had for breakfast this morning?

Game, shot and the 2nd set, Jamie Hughes. 3rd set, 1st leg, Jamie to

throw 1st. Game on. 2- 0 in sets, Jamie Hughes, champions darts,

absolutely brilliant. And he is still peppering in the treble 20.

That was an 11 dart leg to win the 2nd set, he also threw in an 11 dart

leg to win the 1st. His average north of 102. Wesley is doing

nothing wrong. He missed the 1st 3, Jamie Hughes,

but since then, it has been brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Scoring, finishing, you name it. Can he keep it up? Remember, it is the

race to 5 sets in the quarterfinal. The red-hot favourite this week was

Glen Durrant, I think the tide has changed. Jamie Hughes, if he can

keep this up... Averaging just 83, Jamie, in his 1st

2 matches. He told anyone who would listen that he had this in, I'm not

sure everyone believed him. But they believe him now, can he keep it up,

He is really not throwing badly, Wesley Harms. He is chucking in a

ton-40, that was his 9th, averaging almost 98. But he is being blasted

off the board at the moment. Never over till the last dart is

thrown. We saw yesterday, with Scott Waites and geared in force, how much

race to 5 sets, for lots of momentum swings. I must say, we are getting

the best of order. What a match! So far, this is the match of the

week. It could be going all the way, you never know. I hope they keep up

the standard, if they keep this up, 9 sets... We are in for a treat!

These are the darts he told us he could produce on that stage and he

is delivering in could produce on that stage and he

finish all ready. A chance to break the throw and take it into a

and the 3rd leg, Jamie Hughes. He did not even wipe his feet.

Not as fluent as he has been. Went through a purple patch of about 8 or

9 legs, he was averaging higher than 100, hitting his doubles, those

darts that are just finishing outside the treble 20 were going in

but here we go, is he back? Averaging only 87. That is in the

3rd set, Jamie Hughes. When it came to it, despite that bullseye finish

to break, he could not engineer away to hold his throw and move 3 ahead.

Secondly, Jamie to throw 1st. -- 2nd leg. Hello... They really have been

swinging for Jamie Hughes. Once again, he starts a leg perfectly but

look at this from Wesley... What a match. It has had everything except

a winner yet! We would not say no to a 9 dart leg, Tony, if you are

offering! Wouldn't it be nice? He came close last year, Martin

Adams. The width of a double 12-wire away. Eight perfect darts and one

just a millimetre off course. Stalwart is: Oh, just watching that

one there. Martin, a great man, a great player. He 's been a credit to

the game and still is. Three-time world champion, 23 time World

with Wesley back on 200 and change. Well, Wesley really out of it there

three legs. Is he on his way to the semis? Well, we were hoping one of

these players would catch fire after two sets. We had to call the fire

brigade for Jamie Hughes. Five will take him through to the

semi-final. He's been as was said telling everybody the darts he has

and we saw them in those first two sets. He must have heard me earlier

on saying he wasn't scoring very well. 180, brilliant. First eight

legs, unbelievable. 107 average. He's crept down just a bit, just

under 100. Kept doing that - 100-plus. Hard to beat a guy doing

that. He set the tone can 122. He was averaging the sets himself in

the first two sets. He has played all right. Jamie hit all the

doubles. He had a chance set of five. I have done it - we have all

done it - gone out and missed a big number. Hit a 20 instead of a 1.

Just one dart can change the game. That is one of two 11 darters we saw

earlier on from Jamie Hughes. He lost the third set. Wesley won. That

if anything I thought the fourth set was the most impressive from Jamie

Hughes. He had to dig in. The old Jamie Hughes came back in the third

set. He averaged 190 in that and he had to pull himself up by the boot

straps and he did that. You don't often see guys maintain that sort of

game. If they win that then they will win everything they are doing.

They play reel good, two or three sets and somehow they go asleep and

then they have to wake up again and come back how they were playing. He

has to play the way he's doing, scoring well, finishing the doubles.

Right focussed he is. He's getting annoyed with himself. In the

previous games he didn't look like that. He's up today. What about

Wesley in the first couple of sets, averaging 97, 98, from what we are

seeing here at the Lakeside he will win every game and two sets down

must be disheartening. You can tell by his body language. He tries so

hard. He has not had the break. After the break it can sometimes

change. The player that is not playing well comes back and you

think, he's a different guy. Or he comes back... The next set is

everything. It might be 3-1 to Jamie Hughes. He doesn't have to break

Wesley to go 4-1 up and one set away from the semi-final. If he has three

more good legs in his throw, le be within spitting distance. If he

loses the set when he comes out, Wesley has to hold it to go 3-3. It

can change so quick. You think you bully them and all of a sudden you

are not bullying them and they beat you up bad, don't they? I said it

many times - I hope he comes back and pushes himself. Finish 2122.

So it is really got the crowd going this afternoon as well. Our money

was on the most entertaining game - the one after this. It will be a

ding-dong that will be. How about 180s do you think then? The rest of

the game? I think Jamie might win this set and then tighten up up

another bit. I say seven. For one guy? In this game. How much? No. It

is way too early in the day for that!

It is still kind of anyone's, isn't it?

If he can hold here Jamie Hughes, 4-1 leaves him one away from the

semi-finals and he did say that was his target.

He wanted to reach the semi-finals because not only does he get

automatic qualification back for next year, but there is a big old

jump in prize money between this stage and the last four. Quarter

final losers each go home with ?6,5 hung hundred. Semi-final losers go

home with ?15,000. ?100,000 to the winner.

Just don't buy a tractor and forget about the VAT.

Scott Mitchell promised his dad a tractor if he won last year. He

found one for ?100 exactly. Bought the tractor having not considered it

was ?100,000 plus VAT and so he had to find another ?20,000 from

somewhere. He did get a combine Harvester!

OK - treble 20. Can't finish now, Jamie - 111. Nice

shot this. Treble 20. Yes, treble 20.

Wesley coming back for 96. Double 12 if he comes back to hold

his throw. This is for a break. Needs the treble here. So double

eight. Oh, dear! I think he may have needed

that. Double 12.

Double six. Having troubles after the break.

And it is double trouble. Right at the bottom then. Double three. There

it is. Really good dart.

OK, a good start in this leg. Still that double three there. Oh,

we go. A good space. Usually gets three of them when he's in that

corner. I tell you what, he'll probably take

two. The same place for Harms.

Mexico! I don't think they've got anyone appearing this year, Mexico.

Is that what they call" beer goggles? " Only 60, so Jamie here

can nick the advantage of throwing first if he finds a big one, and

does. Already on a fifrn finish.

Wesley Harms had a dart at double eight, to break the Jamie Hughes

throw at the start of this set, he missed it and all of a sudden it's

going away from him quickly. Treble 20, for a 136 in a two-leg game. Oh!

Brilliant! Brutal darts.

Wesley's head went down there. What a shocker that for him. But off he

goes again. That's the end of the 136.

There's Wesley Harms' girlfriend, who must be feeling this match is

slipping away. Again how different it might have

been if he had managed to hit that double eight.

He's not throwing that badly, Wesley Harms.

Well, two tonnes in this leg. Right in the corner, look how much

space he's got for another two. There's his three scores. A finish

136. Well, he's done it once, the 136.

Can we see it again? This is for the set. You wouldn't put it past him,

would you, another one of those - there it is, another double eight.

Not far. And he will be back.

Jamie now double four. This is for the set.

Double two now. Yes! He's done it again!

Those are the ones you need, for the sets. It is Jamie who has got them.

He has just won six legs in a row, Jamie Hughes, just when Wesley Harms

thought he was back in the match having won that third set. Jamie has

accelerated again. That last dart was Jamie's outshot. Plenty of room

accelerated again. That last dart again. Look at those averages.

Starting out with 103, then 100 exactly, the third set he could not

keep it going. But he found a way to win an average fourth set and

brilliant from both players after the break. And the good thing is

that he is getting the doubles. 14 out of 31 is very tidy. Six out

of 19 isn't bad but he has missed the big ones and only 19

opportunities. This is why. That is why Wesley Harms has only had 19

opportunities. This is why. That is opportunities. They have had some

enjoyment Wesley has the experience and the

power. The Mark Kerr is on. It caught the

barrel. -- the marker. A good opportunity for Wesley Harms to

break here. You were wondering where the other Ronnie was and we found

him! Hiding behind Superman. Only at the darts. He must have closed shop

to get here. Did you see the signs? It's good

darts from me and it's good darts from him! And it has been

outstanding darts from him, on occasion in this match. But he has

taken a couple of sets almost holiday. This one especially.

Highest score of 97. Good recovery. 130 is a good

outshot. He will be coming back. Treble 20. Another one. It's the

bull. Just a fraction. Double 16. Double 9. Keep it going, Wesley. Way

off. More applause for Jamie Hughes. That

was his wife Jane applauding and she must be believing, starting to

believe that that semifinal, the target at the start of the week, is

going to become a reality. He is two legs away. She is cheering him on.

And his brother Shane next to her. Did you see that film, Shane?

He needed that treble just to stay in touch and this is a leg where he

is throwing first, Wesley Harms. Still plenty of room. Not a finish

that not far for Jamie Hughes. -- but not far-away. And he is not far

away from the finish. Wesley Harms is not lying down.

He is under pressure now. Yes, 61, 11, bull. He had to get it.

Double 16 for a break up throw to move within one of the semifinals.

He only needed one! He has the darts. He has the

semifinals insight. This could be the one. He has done all the hard

work, played extremely well. It has been magic. A classic game. At times

it really has been. Looking down the oche.

Wesley has the break. He finds another treble 20.

One thing is certain, Wesley won't give up. Ton, 140. Same for Jamie

Hughes. He can't finish from 165. Look where he was standing. But you

definitely cannot finish from 220. Six darts from 165. This is when the

pressure comes. The feeling that you are close. He slowed down

considerably. Wesley to pressure it but it is match point for Jamie

Hughes. 107 to reach the semis. Shanghai to save the match. Can't do

it. Jamie Hughes coming back for double 10. It doesn't matter what

happens here. He has hit it twice and missed it four times but none of

that matters now! Jamie Hughes told as he was capable of it and he has

proved it! He blasts past Wesley Harms. Yozza is through to the

semifinals and he makes a bit of statement. What a match.

Ladies and gentlemen, your appreciation, Wesley Harms! APPLAUSE

But through to his first Lakeside World Championship semifinal, it is

the boy from the Black Country, Yozza, Jamie Hughes! CHEERING

Jamie finally shows us what he's made of. He put Wesley in Harms way

and he rarely relented to get through to the semifinals.

Bobby George, Jamie Hughes will be delighted with that given the

performances in his first two games. He played so much better. 12% up on

his scoring. That is a lot of difference. And he finished well.

Nine 180s, different player. He can play and he is pleased because he

doesn't have the go round the world doesn't have the go round the world

so much, he is already back here next year which was his goal. Now it

is a bonus. And a few quid as well! And he saves money from travelling!

He won three of the five sets at an average north of 100, he might tell

as he might have more to do dumb. We have to say

terrible performance that was! I'm coming in! Bobby was saying what a

only joking. That is what I have been waiting for all week. I said

that if I been waiting for all week. I said

a hammering. You were averaging around 105 in the first two sets. It

is my normal game, that's why I've been so frustrated. You could see

the frustration and now you've seen the real me. It is a longer format.

I relaxed a lot more. You the real me. It is a longer format.

games and it hasn't happened and when you talk yourself up and you

don't produce you feel like a... Good man. We will find out who you

are going to be playing in the semifinal. Two men with different

stories so far, Scott Waites was three Noh down last night and came

back to win 4-3 against Geert De Vos at the number one seed Glen Durrant

has not dropped a set yet. I was delighted with how it went I woke up

feeling really good, I had a good practice the night before and when I

stepped on the stage, even as early as the first leg when I finished

with 141... What a way to start the match. I was relaxed and the 180s

started coming. When one goes in, it just opens up. I am a great front

runner and if I take the first set I'm hard to beat. Sometimes you are

stood behind your opponent and you know it's going in. Three out of

three. He has done it! . You have got to have a lot of grit

and determination, don't give in. If you can keep the pressure on your

opponent, something has to give. Is this the start of a Scott Waites

comeback? That was fantastic. Every time I hit treble 20, there was a

massive cheer and I wanted all three in the treble every time. For the

match, there it is! Can you believe it? Nobody likes to lose 4-0 and

that is what it looked like but in the end, you get a 4-3 victory which

from my point of view was pretty dam good. Scott Waites is the world

champion, world master, he has won the grand slam, he has been there

and done it and he is someone I admire very much so to play him live

on the BBC at Lakeside in the quarterfinals, it will tell me if

minor one seed is justified. I know how good he is playing. If I play

well, he has a really good game if not, he will wipe the floor with me.

Scott Waites will have to be on top of his game because Glen Durrant has

one way of playing and that is good enough to take anybody out who is

not on form. If he plays like he did the other day, Scott has to play

better than him to beat him but last night, 3-0 down, he is a good player

to come back and win that. But he has to get in front of 11 because

Glen likes to be in front -- in front of Glen. If he gets behind he

has no chance, he has to keep with him. Your bang right. He does not

want to come in with a zero by his name at the break. The stats are so

close. Glen Durrant edges it intends finishing. Every time he throws at

double he is hitting one out of two. He will be pleased with that but the

same average, the scoring power, both the same, it is who finishes

sweeter. And bigger out shots win matches. I think it will be

interesting if Scott takes the first set because Glen has not dropped one

in the tournament so it would be interesting with that seed of doubt

in his mind. And if Scott goes a couple behind, I would not panic

because he will feel like he can come back from anything. I think

Glen has the power to be in front of people on the scoring but the best

thing he does is finish. All of these guys today are near in the

scoring and one fella goes ahead because he goes out 139, 144, 160,

the high finishes art what wins it. We have already at a treat, it is

time for the second quarter final in the top half of the draw and to get

the players out there it is Richard Ashdown.

Glen Durrant from the first dart throwing has been the man to beat

and that has not changed. Scott Waites has a chance to change it now

with your commentators, George Riley and John Rawling.

This could be interesting in deed, Scott Waites is showing signs of

being back to his best form but he is still up and down, 3-0 down

against Geert De is still up and down, 3-0 down

to come back and win the match. One thing is for sure, Scott Waites

cannot afford to let a man like Glen Durrant take that sort of an

advantage. Now 38 years old, former grand champion, 2013 world champion.

Glen Durrant is the number one seed and he has exceeded that air of

confidence this week. Best -- exuded. He beat Dean Reynolds and

hammered Larry Butler but what about Scott Waites? Both are heavy scorers

and can both -- both can get high checkouts. Good afternoon, John,

good afternoon all. Looking forward to this. Durrant has been excellent,

in formidable form. What a contest that was from Scott Waites. It was

breathtaking and the atmosphere when he mounted that remarkable comeback

was extraordinary. I was sitting watching amid the crowd on a table

who had had a few quid on Geert De Vos! They were a bit hangdog, but

most of the crowd were just enraptured by what he produced, his

finishing was sensational. It was quite a match. But he can't afford

to come out slumbering as he did yesterday, he has to stay with

Durrant, who has the darts here and already in this opening leg, why

virtue of that 140, he is under a bit of pressure. Nice to see a

player growing in confidence again. He has had injury worries and been a

leaves something tidy, which he has, he is in a strong position.

Dozza from Middlesbrough. This is not to shabby from Scott Waites. He

practised last night with Jamie Hughes and found a little working

man 's club in Frimley Green and found a quiet corner and practised

together and were very happy with the outcome. 50% of it certainly

worked, I did not see Jamie Hughes winning as easily as he did. It was

quite something. Middlesbrough fans at the Lakeside today. He is a big

Middlesbrough fan, he likes his football. That was his uncle on the

left, uncle George. There he is. I think they are more nervous than he

was before the match. It is a good time to be a Middlesbrough fan, they

are flying this season under Aitor Karanka and playing some good stuff.

They have got a good chairman and that counts a lot. Another good

dart, bull. He will be back for 42. No finish

for Durrant. But pressure... Scott is going to have to take this now.

First 180 of the match and Waites will need to get this. Not a bad

marker. With serve at the start of this one

then. It is the first to five for a place in the semifinals.

And in the semifinals, the winner will play Jamie Hughes. The other

court of finals later, Jeff Smith against Dennis Harbour and Scott

Mitchell against Richard Veenstra. That middle dart was the 25,000th

dart thrown this week. You need to get out more, don't just sit around

counting darts. I haven't noted them all but I brought my big pad.

Nothing between these two so far, no real significant match moments, they

are yet to come. I would be very surprised if it was as wide a margin

as the first quarter final, this could be a close one.

of ranking trophies. And he says it was the defeat, to some people,

could have been pretty shattering. Great match. He said it was that

of Ted Hankey when I was not in the commentary box, right in the middle

of Lakeside and it is a fabulous atmosphere. A big proportion of them

really good marker, he used it and made no mistake.

Sale... The equation is quite straightforward. Glen Durrant must

hold his throw and he will win the set. If he does not, it goes for

Scott Waites. All 3 sets will have gone 5 lakes, it is that sort of a

match, it was never going to be a big steam roller. I hope that was a

fellow on the right-hand side... I am pretty sure it was! My raider on

these things is usually quite good...

Glen Durrant is looking in a good position, Scott Waites needing a

treble. Dear... He dragged that, a bit of tension. That was a really

tight through. An advantage, and the darts. He would not mind a treble.

It is not there, not on a finish. It Scott Waites can get back in

contact, maybe... Again, finding the treble difficult and when he

founded, it was the wrong 1! -- found it. To set up a finish, Glen

Durrant, to take set number 3. Rightly so, great.

something he can have a go at. For the set... Treble 19 would leave

bullseye. Glen Durrant, 72 for the 3rd set and

Scott Waites needs to settle down. He does not want Glen Durrant to get

a 2 set advantage, remember, the 1st 5 will take it. Glen Durrant at his

best in the 2nd set. Those figures, visibly improving as

we get to the business end of the competition. The temperature is

rising at Lakeside, getting very warm again.

Durrant already has the rake in this set. This is to stay in. He could

really do with this. Decided not to go for it, leaving

himself on 32, a bit of a gamble that Durrant will not take this 161.

That is the best checkout of the tournament so far from Scott

Mitchell. He needed that, to stay in set

number four. Durrant with the darts to make it 3-1. There is a little

break for the players to head off for a few minutes at the end of this

set. Is it going to be 2-2 or 3-1? A big difference, such an important

leg and such an important set. He has to find something big in this

leg, Scott Waites. He will be desperate not to go in 3-1 down. His

first effort of 59 was not good enough but this is more like it. He

could have done with a 140. Interesting in the interval last

night when they went backstage, neither player through a dart at the

practice board, they just stood there, Scott Waites chatting to his

mates and Davos was slumped over. -- Geert De Vos. This is a glimmer of

an opportunity for Scott. Unlucky. So close to being a 140. Pretty much

level pegging in this leg but Durrant has the darts, crucially,

and that is a great start. Another one to turn the screw? No. He is on

a finish but it is a big one and if Waites could find 140... I don't

think that's enough. For the set. Scott Waites, if you are going to

stay alive, this is your time. He hit 158 last night, 147 would be the

best of the match but it's not there. Durrant coming back with 48

for the set but great darts from Scott Waites. He is there if he gets

a chance but he won't expect it. Two darts at it... He needs another

double 8. And it's not lying well. A big dart and he has missed it. The

way he throws, he was blocking a significant part of the target and

this is a real opportunity. Double 4... Yes! Oh yes. He hangs on in

there and takes the chance. Glen was unlucky with that double 8 just the

other side of the wire but in throwing it he had pretty much

blocked the double 8. What a big moment that could prove. Waites

would be absolutely thrilled to escape at two Ball. -- 2-2.

It is onwards and upwards. Sixth maximum. The fans are getting them

unease worth today because every set has gone the distance -- there

money's worth. Scott Waites could claw this back

now to make it 2-2. But not on a finish yet, Durrant might have first

pop at the end. He is on 161 which can be done. This could be an

important it is pressure applied by Scott Waites and he is doing just

that. -- bit of pressure. Yes. Treble 17 to leave bullseye.

No. Waites to make it 2-2. And not a great last dart. One dart at 16...

He has missed it. Glen Durrant, 79. For the set. Double 11.

He's got it. He knows that was a big dart, Waites had the darts for the

set but it did not work out and Glen Durrant is leading 3-1.

Scott Waites did what everybody said he needed to and took the first set

but after that it made Glen Durrant angry and what a steam train he is,

3-1 up at the break. Scott took the first set but Glen

Durrant is, some people would say it like a roller-coaster but he is the

steadiest most even paste trained you have been on. He has got the

same pace all the time and that a good game, average 97, it is very

equal. The difference is the finishing if Scott hit that double

16 it is 2-2 instead of 3-1. Only one dart could make the difference.

And the whole way through the game, when Durrant has darts at a double,

he is hitting one out of two. The chips away and even if you are at

501, you are thinking you need to get there before him and it brings

this relentless pressure. It is pressure all the time, playing

someone who is the same all the time, near enough 100, you have got

to be above that to beat him. Scott played well, just unfortunate on

that double 16. 2-2 is very different. All that work and you

lose the set on one dart. If Glen does win the tournament and you go

on to stardom, they won't ask you on Strictly Come Dancing! But we have

to give credit to Scott Waites because he is averaging 95 and has

had some nice out shots and is hitting 43% doubles as well. Durrant

is winning the legs that win the sets. If you win them at 2-2, you

are the Guv'nor again. It must get in your head. He is playing all

right, Scott. Glen Durrant has the darts in this fifth set and he could

go 4-1 up and that would be no way back? 4-1 is terrible but the game

does not reflect that. It's a good game but if he loses

does not reflect that. It's a good no good. I can't see... But he did

last night. After the second break he played really well. I don't know.

I am getting it wrong this week, I'm not sure what it's going to do. They

are practising. Last night, Scott Waites was 3-0 down and he won it

4-3 and that is probably what he will be saying. That is what he is

thinking. He was worse off last night, he was behind, just has to

keep on and if he keeps on playing and Glen goes down a little bit, his

darts are not so straight, but he is winning. He won't care as long as he

is winning. Earlier on, Jamie winning. He won't care as long as he

had an average well north of 90 to beat Wesley Harms. He

had an average well north of 90 to over the first two sets. Quality.

This afternoon and we will see it through to the end with George and

John. COMMENTATOR: Durrant leading 3-1,

averaging 97 and outscoring Scott Waites and still maintaining that

has given him the edge. All of the sets have been close. Durrant with

five. And a great way to come back after an interval. All he did was

stand in the player 's room and have a chat with his mates and his

girlfriend. He has taken that leg now, against the throw. Which is

precisely what he wanted to do. Another maximum. It is the 10th of

the match. Averaging just under 100 now. Upwards of 101 for the first

nine. Big lead for Durrant, it might not

be after this visit. 221, trying to leave himself on a

nice setup. Just having a think and composing

himself. And bullseye. How about that? Durrant, to break act, 91. --

break back. 18 now. He has gone treble 4 so it

will have to be travelled ten. He has made a bit of a hash of this --

treble 10. Waites, 122. Bullseye. Yes! What a checkout. And Scott

spend their winnings before they are won, those who say I told you so

before the story has been told, I give you one Mr Scott Waites. There

is a light that never goes out inside that man and he has beaten

the number one seed here at the Lakeside.

Bobby George, everything that Glen Durrant did right in that first

session, Scott Waites did it in the final session when it mattered. He

did it when it counted. He done the same last night. He was 3-1 down, I

thought, not the way Glen is playing. But he done it again,

turned out a really exciting game. The way he started the second

session, two ton plus finishes. As good as big finishes are, this 121

followed by an 122 Thursday in the game. He also took out a clutch

double 8. That got it to 3-2 and we thought, if it's going to happen,

that was a sure-fire way to let Glen know he has to win it. He pushed him

all the way. Glen went a bit, he started to go and went he started

hitting the scores, fantastic to watch. Let's take it set by set

because Glen went 4-2 up and we thought it was a flash in the pan

from Scott when he came out but again, here he goes. This was what

been there before? Not really, you want to get it over with. Glen took

his chances better than I did early doors and that was the difference.

injuries affect you so much and maybe we underestimate that in darts

but how important for you is that you are fully fit with your throw?

I'm absolutely shattered now. My arm doesn't feel like it wants to do

anything! But that's just me, it's built me back up. As long as I play

like that, I'm not bothered. Wonderful stuff. You are someone who

can take on the world, you have won here before and before that you were

winning the grand slam of darts, a tribute that had only been in Phil

Taylor's hands until that stage -- a trophy. Are you approaching that

kind of form? I feel my darts are going in all the time, even if it is

like the great guy he is he has come out. There are no words of

consolation but I would like to say this, look at how you bounced back

from your disappointment in the semifinal last year. Yes, to

All credit to him, he just didn't lie down. It looked as though you

were across the line but he did what he did against De Vos last night. He
