Men's Semi-Final Darts: World Championships

Good afternoon, we are live at the Lakeside for the women's final and

the first men's semifinal 2016 BDO darts championship. Frimley Green is

already a mass of tomfoolery, we start with Scott waits and Jamie

Hughes. They will need fire in their heart and ice in their veins.

Game, shot and the match, Jamie Hughes. Watching the drama unfold

here from the balcony is the coolest customer that darts has ever

produced, Sir Bobby George, are you all right? Quarterfinals, we are

left with a semifinal line-up that most people would not predict. I did

not expect Adams to go out in the first round and then yesterday, the

number one seed, a great game but he has gone. The world champion, he has

gone, four left. We like that it is uncertain. If you have been working

all week and not had a chance to catch up, see what this weekend of

dances going on today at the Lakeside. We have the silencer from

Canada but when he got to the semifinal last year, a fell off the

cliff, getting whitewashed, 6-0. He takes on another Dutch staff

bursting through the ranks. And this afternoon, we know what is going

down, Waites against Hughes. Scott Waits has been returning to some of

the form that won him the title and the grand slam of darts not long

ago. COMMENTATOR: Jamie Hughes told us he

was capable of it and he has proved it. The real ill Jamie Hughes turned

up there. It showed everyone that I can play darts. I am happy because I

proved to myself more than anyone else that I can do it on the big

stage. It will be 5-3, I played a great game of darts and I lost to a

better player. That is his seventh 180. He is relentless. It was 4-4, I

thought I had nicked it. He has done it again, 3-1 down, 4-2, somehow he

has come back from the very brink. I always struggle against him. Reason,

even when he had his shoulder trouble, he would always beat me. I

went up there determined that we would see what happened when we got

up there. The crowd this week have been phenomenal, the atmosphere on

the stage has been a electric. As soon as you walk up to throw your. ,

it goes silent and you have to compose yourself the best you can. I

am in new territory, I reached the last 16 last year, I was not

expecting much last year to be honest, this year, I am quietly

confident, I shall say, stranger things have happened. After watching

him play, he played really well. If he plays that well and I play the

same game as I have played, we will get another really good semifinal

game. Jamie Hughes said himself that Scott Waites is a bit of a bogeyman,

the only stat I would take into account is the experience, the

younger and the fearless, the less experienced, or the guy who has been

here and done it. Scott was injured for a serious amount of time before

that head to head match. But we know that Jamie Hughes will need to

produce the type of darts that he produced spurts yesterday, including

in the first two sets where he had an average of 105 if he is to beat

Scott Waites, who is back to the top of his form. I have never seen Jamie

Hughes play that well, particularly in the first two sets, he will feel

like Houdini now. He comes back after a break and gets out of jail.

Against Glenn Durrant, the number one seed yesterday, he was 3-1 down

in the race to five, and he got through, in the quarterfinals he was

3-0 down and he won 4-3. Jamie is the underdog but he also knows that

if he goes ahead, he is in trouble. He has not been there, he does not

know what it is like. That is the way to do it, come from behind.

Predictions, you are going for the obvious Scott Waites win? I will go

for Scotty too hot tea, Houdini. We are in a situation that is a longer

format again. How do you do the age, experience, how will that be a

factor? Scott has done it a few times, he is used to it. A nosy has

to be up there for a while, if you are playing well, it does not seem

to take long but if you are playing badly, you wonder how many sets are

left and you are in trouble. I still have to go for Waites because he has

fought back and he has come up and he has been the number one seed and

done it all this week. We do not talk enough, you played with a

broken back at this stage but the fitness is everything and the

operation for Scott has brought him back to competing for major

trophies. He had a shoulder operation, his rotator cuff or

something, I have done that myself, it is painful, you have to have two

or three months with your arm in a sling. He does snatch his darts a

bit. But it is working for him, he has to keep going as he is going.

Let us go down to the stage, we will go to the master of ceremonies,

Richard Ashdown. Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the British

Darts Organisation, welcome to the 2016 Lakeside World Championships.

It is semifinals day at the Lakeside. We now introduced to the

stage, the reigning British champion, a former world Masters,

grandson of darts and Lakeside world champion, it is Scotty to hottie,

Scott Waites. We now introduced a former world

Masters finalist, the reigning Swedish open and Jersey classic

champion, the boy from the Black Country, Jamie Hughes.

Jamie reckons that come Sunday night, he can be Hughes of the world

but Scott Waites wants to be the daily Star. We go to our

commentators. COMMENTATOR: There will be an Englishman in the final

but will it be Jamie Hughes, the highest seed left in the draw?

Finally can he produce the darts he is capable of to win his

quarterfinal or will it be this man? The 2013 world champion from

Huddersfield, back from a shoulder injury and almost near his best and

twice this week back from the dead, they will meet either a Dutchman or

a Canadian in the final. Scott will throw first, game on. A Welshman

gets us underway in the first semifinal here at Lakeside. The

auditorium is already jumping. The atmosphere before a dart was thrown

was fantastic. Tony, this is what it is all about, semifinal Saturday?

And we have the greatest arts supporters in the world, they have

been fantastic this week. -- darts. They are in for a spectacular day.

In the semifinals, all four men know they will be back next year by dint

of qualifying for the last four, they also know they have earned at

least ?15,000 this week which is not a bad week 's work. And sometimes

you see absolute classics in the semis, as we did last year with

Martin Adams and Len Durrant. -- Glenn. Scott Waites with the first

time. On the big screens around the Lakeside, any scores over 100 are

marked up in red, all of the rest are in blue and there is another red

one. Leaves 131, and out shot. Treble 20 with the first one, cannot

finish now. The first to six sets, each set is a race to three legs.

Scott Waites with the darts in this leg so he would expect to hold. To

win the leg where he throws first. He is thinking about it, which way?

Must make sure he leaves the finish. 164 the finish. Scott Waites, double

16. Quickfire Waites. Scott Waites the 2013 world

champion. And after his shoulder troubles he is back to his best as

you can see already. With a maximum to get them out of their seats. So

much grouping there. Off we go again. He hits another treble. That

is the one he wanted though. Six troubles so far from Scott Waites.

It will be very interesting, this match.

77 scored. He needed that 140, Jamie Hughes. It is a chance, Scott has

left 177 and cannot finish. Jamie with the darts in this leg. And he

can't finish, not with three darts, 170 is the highest number you can

check out, to macro treble 20s and the bull's-eye. That takes a big

chunk out of 177 and he will be back for double top. He will come down

having blocked the bed. Double top for Scott.

He is happy. Good timing with the 140s. Very impressive in this set,

Scott waits, averaging 94 and hitting 43% of his doubles. Jamie

Hughes averaging just 87 with 32% of doubles.

To get him going, those are the average is so far this week. And

those are the doubles, as you can see, Scott Waites has had to win

many more legs. Taken to a deciding set in both his second round match

and his quarterfinal. A good leg, this one. No finish. 132 four Jamie

when he comes back. To break the throw. Treble 20, could

go 25, good thinking, treble 19 would have left the ball which was

blocked. What they call Shanghai for the set, triple, single, double.

That is the easy one, how about the double? He is right on it. He is in

the mood, Scott Waites, make no mistake. Up and down they go. This

is the best world darts show in the world. Did not miss a dart at the

double in winning back step 3-0. Five away from the final.

Good cover shot. Awkward now. Sensible there, no clowning about.

Not from Waites. Usually practices in the Frimley Green working men's

club, just getting away from the hustle and bustle of the Lakeside

country club but not today, an early start, read it in the early, early

in darts terms, 2:30pm. So he has been here all day. The extension of

the arm with his throw, there we go, right the way through. He is on a

finish, Jamie, 124. Treble 18, bull's-eye. Cannot take

it out but with Scott back on 256, he will be back. 32 left. Double 16.

One to go. Not a bad finish, 156, two trebles. Got to hit one to

settle himself down. Four missed in a row and that has blocked it, can

the thread one through? Yes. What a good start. -- dart. There it is.

Certainly rushing, getting on with the match. In the moments leading up

to the start of the semifinal, while Scott was gently throwing at the

double 18 and double 12 and double 16 that he likes, backstage. Jamie

sat down and watched a bit of Wycombe Wanderers against Aston

Villa in the FA Cup. He is not a Villa fan but he does come from the

West Midlands, a big Wolves fan. He said his aim this week was to

reach the semifinals, not just because of the prize-money jump but

it takes the pressure off, he does not have to qualify for Lakeside

next year. He has had to re-evaluate what he will be satisfied with now.

I had a drink with him in the bar last night and he was so happy to

have produced his best darts on the stage in the quarterfinals and to

have achieved his ambition of reaching the semis. It is sometimes

difficult to get up again after that? If he has reached his

ambition, he should not have done because he has every chance of

winning this match and the title with the way he is playing. Scott

has come back here, what has he got here? Double 5, just low. 2184

Jamie. Just asking what was remaining.

There is Lucy, Scott's partner, who hopes he will hit this double two,

11. Having hit his first three doubles, he has now missed four in

this leg and a sniff of a chance for Jamie Hughes but he needed the

treble 19 to start it. What is happening he is asking himself. A

strange leg, one, double two. Yes. Jamie really has to start now. He

lost the first set but Scott had the darts, hold your throw. No fluency

really. Scott was back game. Some big scores and then he goes off the

boil. Consistency, he knows it as well. Not the explosive start to

this semifinal we were hoping for. But there is still time. Yes, no

fireworks at the moment, a bit of a lapse. Still no one is running away

with the match. Awkward to get it over the top

there. Both players just struggling with their scoring at the moment.

They cannot get a rhythm, strange but it is affecting both of them. If

they start enjoying themselves, nice they out. Finally they are both on a

finish, Jamie first. Treble 19 four bull's-eye, Scott to break, 136.

Treble 20, yes. Treble 20, Hughes is on 68. That is close, oh dear. With

Scott on 36. He missed the big 16 so did not get a dart at the double to

hold his throw and here are three to break the throw. You did not really

doubt it, did you? A strange game, this one. Missing

some of the simplest finishes. There should be no nerves up there. A good

marker. The only man at Lakeside with more jewellery than Bobby

George. Back-to-back 140s for Scott Waites in this leg. Throwing for a

two set lead. He is livening up. Jamie is really struggling.

Good scoring from Scott Waites, 140, 140, 83, leaving a finish of 138,

382 Jamie Hughes. Needs this to get him going. Treble 20, no.

78 for the set when he comes back. As good as he was in his

quarterfinal, Jamie Hughes, he is struggling equally today. Tops, for

now, in sets. You have to do feel for Jamie Hughes. Unless you are

Scott Waites, that is! Scott is putting the big ones away, now.

His scoring has just deserted him. In the first couple of sets in the

quarterfinals Jamie Hughes was averaging 105. Today he is averaging

73. You won't win matches of this calibre with those scores and those

averages. Go on! Look at that from Scott, 140, one could, 140. -- 140,

100, 140. On the finish already, Scott Waites. It would be the

highest of the championships so far. Bullseye, for 164, for Scott Waites.

How close was that? 78. 25? Yes. Double eight. 44. --

double four. It is all going the way of Scott

Waites. That's the way. Glanced off the

barrel. Room left for another one? All English semifinal and all

He needed that. Will that get him going? Only the second leg that he

has won in the match, Jamie Hughes. This is better. Much better. There's

Matt Baker and Tony Hatch, who wrote the theme to Crossroads. And the

theme to neighbours. Goes back a few years, does Tony.

And so do I! OK, treble 20, treble 17, ball.

Let's see it. Unlucky. Jamie in trouble. Scott on 24. Just not

happening. The Jamie. Double 12, then, for Scott Waites. 33. Doesn't

matter if you hit it. Off he goes. 2-0 in sets, 2-0 in this set. Just

hasn't got going, Jamie. He is a really nice guy, Jamie Hughes.

Gentle, pleasant. Amble. -- humble. Occasionally on a dart board he can

be anything but, but today it is all a little tame.

Plenty in from Tipton, supporting Jamie. We got a glimpse of his wife

Jane and his brother Shane. We did, there they are. From the Black

Country. His nickname is Yosser, it is something to do with Boys From

The Black Stuff and a cousin of his who now lives in India. But all that

into a cold room and the nickname Yosser comes out! Well they have a

lot of corn in India! Only the second maximum score of the

match. Single 19 now. He has missed Ed! A chance for Scott. For a 3-set

lead! Not looking nice up there. 3-0, Scott Waites is leading. I

mentioned that I sat down and watched a bit of the FA Cup tie with

Jamie before this semifinal. I had a word with Scott as well, wanted to

know how he was feeling. He was at pains to point out that once, in the

quarterfinal, I miss counted and I thought he had left himself 159 when

in fact he had left himself 158. A big difference because 158 as a

finish and 159 is not. So officially, I apologise, Scott. He

was quite cross about it! We have, this week, seen the most

dramatic darting U-turns, not least in the second-round match between

good divorce and Scott Waites. Geert de Vos looked as if he was

going through, it was almost exhibition stuff, suddenly he came

within one set of victory and it was as if the match was played in a

mirror. Geert de Vos lost all confidence and Scott Waites won a

match. He's now going in for double 16. What great throw. To go further

in the lead, double 16, the shot, the market is there.

We've had some great players from Yorkshire, and Scott Waites is

certainly one of them. The only player left in the drawer who knows

what it is like to win the world title. Only lost five sets in all of

2013, when he was crowned world champion, Scott Waites. Then he had

shoulder problems, he had an operation, his throwing arm is

completely free and he says it is the best thing he has ever done,

deciding to have that operation, and all of us and in we are looking at

the Scott Waites of three years ago, again. Look at this, 140, 100.

Relentless. Jamie though with two terms, he's got a chance in this

one. -- with two tonnes. Not a semifinal that will live long in the

memory, not the first three sets of it anyway but this is a race to six

sets and there is still time. We are holding that hope, and we? It is

like everything. The longer the distance, you think you've got more

time, and then suddenly you are in trouble.

Leaves double top. Jamie, you cannot finish. Scott with double top when

he comes back to the Gorky. -- oche. Come on, Jamie. Only 13 legs so far

and Scott Waites has won 11 of them. Those five doubles missed by Jamie

Hughes were in a leg that he won. His mum and his grandmother there

together, having a bit of a chat and asking what is happening to my son,

my grandson. There is Hugh, who is, for the time

being, refereeing his final match. An emotional day for him. He had a

hint of a tear in his eye as he will walk into the venue this morning.

Hugh is 22. He needs to sort out a career. The refereeing was taking up

too many weekends. It is a shame, she is absolutely magic. I know how

difficult it is up there. Total concentration, permanent

concentration. I mentioned my mistakes, the referee cannot get

away with them. Bull for double 16. That was for the set. Jamie,

something like 144 to getting going. Oh, can't finish now. Only a

fraction away. Having some bad luck. His darts were flowing yesterday,

today he is trying to force them. So for a 4- set lead, double top. And

there it is. Scotty Too Hotty, and he is too hot

for Yosser just now. Here we go, the fifth set, leading 4-0. Scott can

average 90, he can throw much better than this, he just doesn't need to.

He is rattling away the doubles. Not giving Jamie any chances. Jamie has

only had darts at a double twice, all match, in two legs, all match.

He won them both so if he can sort out his scoring, maybe we will have

a semifinal to savour. There's a break after this set but if it is

5-0 you think it will come too late for Jamie, even if he comes a

different player. I believe in your! Trouble 20, troubled 17, and the

bull. 161 is still the highest checkout of the week. Not this time.

So is God will come back for 71. Treble 13, double 16, I would think.

Single 18. It is double top. And it is there.

There is shame, Jamie's brother. -- there is Shane. We'll be so upset.

When he does go back to Tipton and reflects on his week at Lakeside, he

did what he came to do, which is, reached the semifinals. Though good

thing is as well, he is amassing league points, to come back next

year. That is a good thing. That's why he wanted to reach the last four

because you are automatically invited back, or four semifinalists

back next year, no matter what, zooming they want to, and he does.

-- assuming that they want to. Not much doing for Scott, either.

He's only been here once before, Jamie Hughes, he lost in the second

round to an inspired Glen Durrant last year. He almost made it in

2012, reached the last qualifying round in Hull but was timed at

contrition and before his match with Andy Bolton. Again he reached the

final qualifying round in 2013 but he lost, 2-1. So, 144. Go on, Jamie.

Yes. Treble 16, maybe treble 8. Anyway he will be back. There's a

chance. 16, double 16 will give him the leg.

Every time he has had a dart at the double he has won the leg. That is

only the third time that has happened. If he can find a way to

break, and this has become a little tougher, maybe all is not lost. You

never know. 5-0, you probably do. Never give in. Never. Your motto?

Yes, without shadow of a doubt. And around the game too long. I have

seen so many times when you think you are just on the last double. And

you are three sets behind and lose the match. Good last dart, finding

be treble. It is not a finish, he has a lead. Get the music on. It

will not be long. There are not any actual edges on a dart board but we

have some in the crowd. OK. Treble 19, maybe. 99. -- double

nine. He is quick. To break the throw. Ten. He made sure of that. A

dart at tops to break the throw for Jamie Hughes and he has had it! --

he has hit it. Come on, Jamie, they scream. He is throwing first, he

could win a set here. The best cheer of the match is for Jamie. Remember

there is a break after this set. So often we see it, a player struggles,

goes backstage for five minutes and comes back rejuvenated. A chance to

just take five. Take stock. Get off that stage, which is a very lonely

place if you are not playing your best.

Scott will be hoping to keep the metaphorical foot on the throat.

Good marking, that one. Needs a treble. Only 60. Back comes Scott.

Punishing, punishing. 100 native! -- 180! Just when you thought it was

safe to go in the water, a maximum, from Scott.

The way that he's been throwing, you wouldn't back Jamie to take this

out, but no pressure. The biggest finish that there is, 170. A 13 dart

finish. And to break back more importantly. Double 10. Double five.

Set point, Jamie Hughes. 18 four bull. One dart at the bull's-eye to

win the set. Double five! That is way out! But

that is not. Scott Waites with the darts. And

throwing for a five set lead. And seemingly in no mood to let Yosser

back in this. That will rattle his cage. 140. Keep going, Jamie. 140,

100, coming so close. Tonnes are not enough for Jamie

Hughes committee needs to break the throw. Look at that again, another

140 from Scott, terrific matchplay. 121 left. Nice finish. Treble 20.

That would have been 17. 88. -- double eight. Well, well,

Scott Waites is leading 5-0 in a race to six. Jamie Hughes looks a

forlorn figure as he walks offstage for a short break. STUDIO: We said

the players would need eyes in their veins today but Jamie Hughes is

frozen and it would take a Disney storyline to bring anything other

than a win for Scott Waites. Bobby, we love darts but when we come on

this alchemy we take the truth cell sometimes and that was grim.

Terribly grim. Jamie Hughes has not played like he did yesterday. He's

got 80 averages and normally the semifinal is better than the final.

Unless he does what Scott does and comes back to beat him. An

interesting situation, in the last couple of games he has come back

from the dead and a man who knows all about the ups and downs is the

former champion and our friend, Steve, Scott has come back from the

dead twice, this is the opposite of that. And not a bead of sweat. He

doesn't have to play great darts at the moment to win legs. The thing

is, she's been here before and he knows what it is like to win the

title. Jamie is probably trying to hard. Now he's got to try to stay in

the match. One more set for Scott Waites and it is game over. If you

are backstage, trailing 5-0, is there any consolation, any

motivation? At least he has the darts in the next set. That is a

starting place. He might relax and may win this next

set. He was 3-0 down in his first match and you can see it in some of

Scott's play because he is incredibly self-motivated. He has

not been in this position all week, he has always been behind, this is

like a practice session, he has been hitting his doubles, he can score,

no pressure, a different game, if you are both doing it, it becomes a

good game but it is a shame. It is a small list that come here and win at

their first attempt, some win on their second attempt, it is almost

the moment before the dream, Jamie Hughes is a capable player,

averaging 100 through the season but having the nightmare right now. He

has proved on the circuit that he is quite high up. He is a fantastic

player, away from it, he is a lovely lad as well. I was tipping him to

win the Lakeside last year. The experience he had coming into this,

but to win this title you need to be at 100% of your best, especially

against Scott Waites playing as well as he can, it will be difficult. You

make a good point, it is a long format, you go from your second

round and then your next day, quarterfinal and next day,

semifinal, if he goes out and wins this in straight sets, he will feel

like he has had a half day off. He will too be honest. He will want to

get it done 6-0 and get off and probably go down to the working

men's club and get ready for tomorrow's final. He is probably

already in the backroom celebrating and thinking he is in the final,

Jamie has to come out firing and take that set and put the pressure

back on Scot to win the game rather than labouring over the line. The

problem is one set does not put on any pressure, he would have to win

three in a row for any pressure but do you understand what Stephen is

saying? Scott Camero get ready for tomorrow's final or are we jumping

the gun? He is not going to think he is through, he will think he has to

get one more set and then he is through. You have the final the next

day, and there would be no pressure but if he can do that, it is a

lovely feeling, going through a semifinal with no one taking games

off you. That is the Lakeside. I cannot see him coming back from 5-0,

it is a big fight back. That cheer as well was for him coming out, the

crowd trying to GM up, even Scott Waits's family want to see him win a

set. It is that kind of atmosphere backstage, no one wants to see the

whitewash but we are on the cusp of it right now. We will go back to the

Lord of the darts, but he is only getting paid per set. LAUGHTER

COMMENTATOR: I have a great page of notes, and the way it has panned out

so far, it looks as though I could have had an extra half an hours kip.

He is so much better player than what he has shown so far? Jamie, I

wonder if psychologically, having proved a point, is showing that he

is more than a pub player. I wonder if psychologically part of him

thought he has done that and this is a bonus from here. That is what he

was saying, I spoke to him last night in the bar and he said he

would be relaxed and you never know and that he could produce his best

darts but ahead of a semifinal, you need to be thinking the better then

maybe produce your best darts, you have to persuade yourself that you

will. And the fact that Scott has been there and done it, his problems

on and off have been well charted but he is something back to the form

that he is capable of. He has the big stage experience, winning this

title and the grand slam, it will clearly play in his favour and he

will take some beating in this tournament now. I think he will be

favourite to win it. He is the only man who knows what it takes to do

it. Why not, spin them up. His first of the match. C if we can get a one

to four from Scott Waites. Bull's-eye. Double 13. To hold his

throw. Well done. That is good, he had Scott Waites in his slipstream,

poised to pounce if anything had gone wrong with that bubble macro

13, that may have settled him down a touch. Scott Waites has been the

comeback king. The crowd would just like to see it go for a set or two

longer, possibly meet included. The bank manager will anyway. I will

remind everyone of what happened in the 2007 final, Martin Adams was 6-0

up against Phil Mickelson -- Nixon, he came back after the break, 6-1,

6-2, 6-3, 6-4 and all of a sudden a deciding set. You never know, that

is darts, I remember that one vividly, that match, Nixon, bless

him, what a nice man. No finish here for Waites.

That was an attempt at triple 18 but it went in the treble 1.

There we go. Jersey classic last year, Hughes beat Waites in that

final, 5-4, this is their first televised meeting. Good start. His

scoring is a lot better since the break, it could not be much worse if

we are being honest. Hughes in the black

Hughes in the ways of the Blackstone was all heart, he takes his name

from that, his nickname, Jamie, he wants to prove he is not falling

apart but it is a big task to make a decent fist of it from here. Alan

Waites, throwing, absolutely with his back to the wall has been the

highlight of the week for me. He has played wonderfully, I said at one

point in commentary, when he was playing Glenn Durrant, the betting

exchanges when he was 4-2 up clap, had Glenn Durrant as 1-33 favourite

but Scott still came back. 1-33 in a two horse race. That is Mike Tyson

against Buster Douglas. And then some. He beat him 5-4 from 4-2 down,

winning his previous match 4-3 from 3-0 down. If he comes through this

you will be in the final against either a Canadian or a Dutchman and

I think he will get a fair measure of support if he gets through to the

final. The other semi will be a good game, but we thought this one would

be mind you. That is true but on paper it was. Unfortunately, sport

is not played on paper, not this one anyway.

Hughes has to jump all over this, if he ever needed a 180, never a better

time, somewhere towards that, a good first dart. Can he find another one

somehow? The answer is negative. Double 16 to level the set, very

impressive, it really is. It is not always easy to find those doubles

when your opponent is struggling as much as Jamie is but Scott Waites

has been very steady. You just have to play your game and try and focus

but he is on the cusp now, on the verge. Easier said than done. Must

hold his throw or he is out. That does not help a great deal. Waites

watching on, he thinks he can close this one out. There is one treble

and two of them. Yes, well done. Keeping his hopes

flickering, not on a finished yet but Waites might be after this. A

loose last one but two great trebles. Wants to take a big chunk

at the 192, not doing at the moment, treble 20 helps. 154, for the match,

there is the treble, that is not in trouble 18, missed by a whisker so

it is not on this time. Hughes's flickering hopes not quite

extinguished yet. Treble 19, treble 18 for double 12, eight. To stay

alive and win a set, yes. Happy days and a wry smile from Scott Waites

and a celebration from Jamie Hughes, they are pleased for him. They are

on their feet all around Lakeside. You have never seen such a reaction.

That is a pretty good reaction as well. They had only just barely sat

down. That was Scott's fifth maximum of the match, six in total. And his

13th of the week, Jamie has had 15 but only one today. He really did

play so well against Wesley Harms, and since he came back from the

break, he has not been anything like at the same level, only averaging

82, Hughes. He loved the moment though, didn't he? That is

acknowledging the huge cheer he got for winning that set. Yes, there it

is. His second of the afternoon. 134 is makeable but not now, Hughes is

not on a finish. Waites will come back with eight

treble 20, double 8 possibility. Hughes is an 80, that complicates

things a little bit, 11 would leave bull's-eye, here he goes with Hughes

waiting. Good dart. Lucy his girlfriend, smiling happily. First

winning bull's-eye of the match. Oh dear. Only 39.

In the first two sets against Wesley Harms, Jamie Hughes averaged 105,

that is why he was so pleased, he did not give up that standard for

the rest of the quarterfinal but not far off it and that is why he was so

pleased that he had finally shown at the darts he was capable of on that

stage but today, it has not followed him. The pros will say it is all

right doing it on one day but you have to do it repetitively, that is

what separates the players at the highest level. And this is

amplifying that particular sentiment because with the darts he is under

all sorts of pressure again. With a 39 and a 28 to his name already.

Add a 43 to that mix. Not good. Waites is too long in the tooth to

let that opportunity go. Coming back with tops, this one is

to go two up and within a leg. Always nice to take out 220 with

four darts. Good play, he is not going to let this one slip, surely.

Serving for the match. A steady 100 to start.

The good news for Jamie Hughes is that he will be back next year and

he knows with what happened last night that he can produce on the big

stage. Waites is storming towards the finishing line now, just 261

remaining between him and a place in the final. He won the title three

years ago, Scott Waites. Only dropped five sets in that entire

tournament. He is on a finish, 161, that would be a spectacular way to

take it out, equalling the best finish of the week by Scott

Mitchell. Let us see if he can do it. All yours, Scott. Yes, treble 17

for the bull's-eye, do it in style. The crowd would have loved that one

to go in. Lucy knows it. Hughes is not on a finish so Scott will

return. 25 when he comes back for a 14 dart leg and a place in the

final. There is the single nine. Double four, there it is, never

really in doubt. Never in any doubt at all. Scott Waites through to his

second Lakeside final, Jamie Hughes will be back and throw an awful lot

better when he does come back but today, this afternoon, belongs to

Scott Waites. Ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for Jamie Hughes

and the man contesting his second world final, Scott Waites.

Scotty to hottie did not need to be more than lukewarm to own a place in

the final, maybe a step too far for Jamie Hughes this year under the

microscope that is the Lakeside stage. Electric performances in the

quarterfinal and second round, and easy Saturday afternoon, must make

him hot favourite for his second Lakeside title tomorrow. As you

said, Jamie might make a set but too far to come back. Too hard. From 6-0

down, it you can do it but you have to be right on your case and he was

not on his game today. If it had been yesterday and not today, he is

not the same guy. Waites did his job, just averaging over 93, he has

gone along this session in his head like he is practising with no

pressure. But he did not play as well as he did before. He has done

his job, he is in the final, this one was like a walk in the park for

him but tomorrow, he has to play well, whoever he meets in the final.

From Scott's point of view, you do what you have to do, whether it is

your back against the wall of being streets ahead, he has done what he

had to do so credit to him. You have to switch that off, he is thinking,

would he do the same to him because it can happen, he did his job,

scored well and finished well, average nearly 94. You know he wants

to get away, he likes to go somewhere quiet with his partner.

Congratulations. That could not be any more different than the other

couple of games? No, it seemed a bit more straightforward today, than the

previous two days. Difficult with a friend on stage and he is having a

nightmare and you are comfortable ahead,. His first two games, he was

saying how badly he was playing and then the last game he played really

well. In the practice room, we have had a bit of banter because we are

decent mates. He has been practising pretty well and then he got on

stage, like playing a completely different player. He is such a

fantastic player and he knows he did not perform today. From your point

of view, and you are playing someone averaging in the high 70s, you were

still taking out your doubles, 45%, and still averaging over 92, way

ahead of what was needed, from that point of view, you are showing the

same deadly finishing you have all week. It is difficult because you

have to keep your focus. You are up there for one thing, to win the

game. It does not matter how much you want your opponent to try and

get back into it or feeling sorry for him, because I did, I wanted him

to get a set but in some respects I did not because I was 6-0 up but I

want the lad to play darts and he did not. He is darted playing after

we came back after the break and I was thinking "Don't start playing

now." Those who have been watching during the week, you were warning

us, the shoulder is better, Scott Waits has won the grand slam of

darts and you do not do that with Mickey Mouse arrows. He won the

grand slam, he got his shoulder done, I have had mine done, it is

horrible but you have worked at it and played good darts, I said he was

hiding, but he cannot hide any more because he is in the final. Will you

watch the other semifinal tonight? Will you leave it alone? I tried to

watch the other game last night and fell asleep halfway through. I was

shattered after my game and that was it. I will keep an eye on it but I

have a 50-50 chance of winning. Congratulations, feel free to give
