Women's Final Darts: World Championships

Good afternoon, over the next hour or so, a story will unfold but

cannot fail to fall short of anything but emotional. The Lakeside

crowd might be with their broadest smile but the two players are

preparing for the biggest afternoon of their lives. For Deta Hedman, a

chance to finally lose the moniker of People's Champion but Trina

Gulliver is one match away from a record 10th title. This is the place

I call my home. The Lakeside country club. The home of world darts. I

made my debut here in 2001. Nine times champion of the world.

Deta Hedman stands in my way. As I look to make it ten. A final that

very few predicted thanks to a run of results that ripped up the form

book and burned it to a crisp. Every step of the way, these two

have rarely been favourites but they find themselves here and all credit

to them. A perfect day for one and a painful afternoon for the other.

This has been the best year for me in terms of preparation. What will

be will be. Thrilled, a long time since I have been in the final, I

have been here for the 16 years of it being run and I am excited about

it. I have gone up there just to play and win my game and I have not

looked and just hopefully do the business and look forward to the

next one. Trina has played well so it will be a tough match. -- Deta

has played well. I am quietly confident. Lumet grew to be fair,

all of the girls, we have played nicely. There is more in the tank

from me and from Trina. I know I have the ability, I have just not

been performing at my best and things seem to be coming right this

week. I will go up there and hopefully my top game will come

together. It would be the icing on the cake as everyone keeps telling

me, it is the one trophy I have not lifted. It would be great. For

those, Bobby George, welcome back to the Lakeside with the legend, for

those who do not watch women's dance all the time, let us start with

Deta, she is the Jimmy White of women's darts if you like, winning

everything but this and she is friendly, funny and flamboyant. We

love her. She has been around a unlawful lot, she has won every

tournament you can actually win, she has been close to this one, couple

of years ago she went for the wrong double and lost through that. She

has come back again and has not dropped a set. She enjoys her darts

as well. She loves it. It is her hobby, not a living. She has to work

and go round the world so she has to travel a lot. She has been in two of

the last four finals and had a dart to win it, you were packing up the

suitcases, job done and it did not happen for her. That really hurt

her. Psychologically, she needs to overcome that, if she has a chance

today, she needs to put everything to the back of her head and be

clinical. She will want it bad but it cannot put her off again, she has

played a steady all the way through, she only has to play the same and

finish and be world champion. The stories are equal but a lot would

say that is not the big scorer, 2001 the first time here, this is the

16th world latest title, she won the first seven and two of the next

four, then the new breed started to come through, Anastasia, there was

Francis, and Zoe, and Lisa and everybody said there would not be a

10th for Trina Gulliver except for Trina Gulliver. She was winning all

of the tournaments all the time but then she struggled, but she did not

give up, she kept going and going and the result is she is on that

stage in the world final. It would be lovely to win it ten times. But

Deta wants to win it once. Two people we love, how in the world,

how do we watch it? Is it through the gaps in our fingers because I do

not know of a more emotional final. Are you asking me who is going to

win? You do not want to say, do you? I don't want either of them to lose.

For the first time, we are not going to because either way we will be

euphoric for one and really down for the other one. Yes, I would like to

see Deta when it because she has not won it before but I would like to

see Trina win it for the 10th time. Just let the darts fall, this is a

career defining for both of them as we go to our master of ceremonies,

Richard Ashdown. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the 2016 Lakeside

World Championship ladies final. It is a best-of-5 set finale at the

home of world darts, the Lakeside. We introduce the winner of over 80

BDO world -- BDO titles, nine times the Lakeside world champion, it is

the golden girl, Trina Gulliver. CHEERING

We now bring to the stage for her third Lakeside World Championship

final, twice a world Masters champion, the current holder of 13

world ranking titles, she is the reigning British open champion, the

dart destroyer, Deta Hedman. Now you know why we love these two

girls, they will have dreamt of this final many times, this is sport, the

line between victory and defeat is painted then than a rivulet of 80.

-- of a tear. COMMENTATOR: The fifth meeting in a televised championship

and they have had two wins apiece. In the time when Trina Gulliver

dominated the sport, Deta Hedman was concentrating on business and taking

a break from it. She and her supporters will say come would Trina

Gulliver have had all the success she had if Deta had played against

her? As her walk on music suggests, she needs to be hot, hot, hot.

Because Trina Gulliver, 46 years old now, she has been playing her best

darts for four or five years. The Deta Hedman has the nickname, the

dart destroyer, twice runner-up, a her seventh Lakeside, it is a cliche

to say she is too good never to have won it but maybe she is. Thank you

ladies and gentlemen, this is the ladies World Championship final,

first set, first leg, Trina to throw first. The last couple of years it

has been won by Lisa Ashton, not this year, will it be the nine time

champion will 56-year-old Deta win it for the first time? I look

forward to finding out, good afternoon to everyone at home. This

could be the match of the weekend. Really looking forward to this

contest. Trina Gulliver getting this stage after beating Lisa Ashton and

to graft, Deta Hedman beat Corrin, and Louise Peters. Trina Gulliver

played really well in the semifinals. And Louise Peters at the

end of the match did not think it was the end of the match, she

thought it was best-of-5 but this one is best-of-5. Deta looked like

she would beat Lisa Ashton a couple of years ago but it did not turn out

that way. The disintegration was almost painful to watch. Allen she

has been beaten by Lisa Ashton in the last three Lakesides but here,

Hedman and Gulliver on the biggest stage, first to three sets for the

title. She was so upset, I do not think she thought about it serious

lead but she briefly considered the idea of retirement. But the fact she

has won 13 BDO ranking titles in 2015 suggests that would have been

premature. Yes, not in bad form. A bit of a cushion. Jamaican born,

Deta, came over with her parents. When she was 13 years old. She plays

for Oxfordshire and now lives in Essex.

I caught sight of a couple of Jamaican flags earlier on. A

fabulous atmosphere again at the Lakeside. It Gulliver waiting for a

finish, what can Hedman set up? 151, Hedman waiting on 84, she has missed

the troubled 20. Another single 20. To strike first.

She was looking for the 14 for the bull's-eye I think. The cogs are

turning. She has made up her mind. That was not great. 96, Trina

Gulliver, to hold throw, treble 20 would leave one. At double 8. Oh

dear. A pretty loose visit last time, now on 49. 17 to leave double

16. Can she take it out this time? First attempt at a double. She made

an adjustment but an opportunity for Gulliver. Very cagey, 21 darts each.

14 for tops. Two darts at it for Gulliver to hold. And she does, the

first leg of the match to the golden girl.

Trina being cheered on as ever by her wife Sue, she actually met her

here at Lakeside. Deta is the England team captain and proud to be

so. It was a tight opening leg and I

think that will be the way of this match.

Elaine and Page, as far as I am aware, Elaine Paige has not made it

but there is still time. Everyone inside this iconic venue having a

great time this weekend. They saw Darth Vader doing at the YMCA with

Ronald McDonald before this one. I wonder if it is the same Darth Vader

as always, if so, he has put in a lot of hours.

Hedman on 200, looking to leave it on an achievable finish after this

visit and get herself into the match. There is a stag do in the

auditorium I gather, serious fancy dress, there we go. It will be all

right. It might not be today. 160, to hold, for Deta Hedman, the

third seed. Not this time. This is to break the throw. A round

100 41-1. Treble 24 tops. Another go at that would leave double 10.

Gulliver will come back with a chance to break. Concentration on

those familiar features. Another one now for tops. Oh dear. That means

she has to go for the bull. Good effort. Again, 21 darts apiece

before the finish. Hedman with tops. Not too close. It will have to be

double 10, there we are. Into the match. This will settle the nerves.

1-1. First to three decks are set in the women's final, the best of five

sets. If it was level at two apiece and 2-2, it would be sudden death,

various possibilities. You never really feel you are in a game until

there is a score next to you on the scoreboard. Until that happens, 1-1.

Averages almost identical. They are great rivals, these two. Gulliver

has the MBA, recognised for her services to sport. Nine times the

champion. -- MBE. I tell you what, she is going to be one wearing a

Lakeside sweater, it is not cool in here. I was thinking the same, a

lovely jumper, probably not the occasion for it. Hosing it down

outside as ever. We would not want it any other way. There is your

mate, Dart Vader, very good. He has his like Sabre there, ready to take

at anyone who offends him. Toasting the success of his latest film. Do

you think he can actually see the darts, I believe he can because I

saw him wandering to the gents earlier in the week and he was

wearing the headgear and I don't recall him missing. I am pleased to

hear that, very pleased to hear it was satisfactorily completed.

No check out of course, Hedman on 150.

Hold that pose, we have got you. Treble 20 to start. It is a big one.

That is more like it. Just checks with the referee. Straight in the

seven. 125, looking at the bull's-eye and not getting it. Going

to the top of the board, that is good, to get out of a dodgy

position. Option said, might be bull, double 16, treble 14 for tops,

lovely dark, for a break of throw. Terrific darts, two in a row for

Deta Hedman. Beautifully done. Now, serving for the opening set, she has

the darts. That graceful, cucumber cool

resolve. Looks so at ease up there, Deta Hedman. So much experience up

on that stage, 173 by my maths, BDO ranking titles between them. That is

some record of success. It has to be a very large trophy cabinet as well.

Deta with the advantage so far, looking for the first maximum of the

match and getting it. Very good. And far from it from Trina Gulliver,

there is the maximum from Hedman. Come on.

Another solid 100, moving into a strong position as Sheila to set it

up for next time. He is an East Enders guy, isn't he? The cab

driver. A regular here. He is Charlie in the programme itself,

Charlie Slater. Don't pretend you don't know. I always say this, the

people think I am mad because I have never watched an episode of

Eastenders but unfortunately it is true.

Treble 20 would leave double 19. Good start, for the set. Brilliant.

How about that, a double 19 finish. Deta on a mission and she is set up.

What a lake of dance that was, a 180 and a 118 finish. Her highest

checkout of the tournament this week has been 132.

Trina's average 68, Hedman averaging 75. And she will be feeling

confident after that 118. We did have a 160, a record for the women's

tournaments, let us watch this first. By the Dane, Peters.

She has had one. Not far away from two. These are good darts from Deta

Hedman. What a response. Her first maximum.

Not been scoring as heavily as their male counterparts but these two are

well matched. It promises to be a really good game of darts. Gulliver

on a finish, not an easy one but it is still on. Treble 14 is perhaps

the shot here. Just checking. She has left herself a nice out, 60. To

take the opening set of -- leg of this second set against the throw.

Hedman could have done with a treble. Can she do it this time? For

a break of throw at the start of set number two.

That's more like it! Great response from Trina Gulliver.

1- 04 Hedman, one leg to Gulliver, second set, remember, best of five

in the final, best of three all the way through the tournament before

that. There is Paul, Deta's boyfriend. I am sure that can be

arranged, even I can cook that! Is it edible? Of course. I watched

might mentor, Barry McGuigan, a while ago, in that degree programme.

That inspired you to make much? Certainly, I thought, if he can do

it... It generally goes with sausages. The kids love it. The dog

is quite partial, as well! She will switch down. Terrific dart.

A little wayward at first from Hedman. Yes, a decent standard, this

match. Tight. Nip and tuck. Not much between them in terms of averages,

Hedman marginally ahead. In a moment we will see the checkouts. Gulliver

actually has more success. Albeit two, as against three, the

percentage is better, you take the point. That 19 is serving them both

pretty well. Hedman will be first to a finish. Good last dart, that.

She's going to come back looking for Shanghai, treble, single, double.

Hedman, a big 144, which can't be done.

This, for 2-0. Second set. Needs to find the treble, has to move across

the oche to do so. No. It wasn't flying well, that first dart.

Locking the red. Hedman. She was out on 20s. Good dart, tops. Ten to

level it. This time. Just underneath the wire, unlucky. Interesting when

that treble landed, Trina was watching and then looked away, did

not watch the double missed doubles. Not a bad marker. That doesn't help,

though. And darts players do need a little help as to whether darts are

actually in the target. Gary Anderson confessed that he was blind

is about and he the PDC World Championship! -- blind is about. He

doesn't want any glasses, though, does he! If that is how he plays

when he can't the doubles, think of how he will play if he could! An

excellent advertisement for partially sighted darts players

everywhere. Yes! That is more like it! Blind as about might be

overstating it just little bit. The wires look a little hazy. I had my

eyes lays it a few years ago. But I had them done with laser treatment.

A strange experience. Now I can see, which is good. I would not have been

brave enough to do that. I don't like the human error factor!

Gulliver, 2-0 ahead, heading towards 1-1, she can take this one if she

takes it against the throw. Solid dart.

Five times the Masters champion in addition to her nine times world

title winning performances. Solid tonne. Wasn't it 60? Sorry, I

thought she got that treble. You are talking about other people's A side

going! I just thought she would get the tonne and set it up for the

finish, I was getting ahead of myself. A slight advantage there.

That reminds me, I am going to the dentist next week. Gulliver going

well. She's got the advantage. Just one more leg needed and she will

level the match. George and Alan are always welcome!

And grandad from Only Fools And Horses as well. Going for the cover

shot which might have been the better option.

Six darts for Hedman from 172. And a good first dart as well. Down we

come. 92 is a good leave. Gulliver is on 178. Not able to make the

inroads she would have wanted. This can go in a couple of darts. Treble

20 required from the first. Oh, dear. Treble 17 will need to be the

shot now. Leave tops. For the set. It is a big ask, though. Treble 20,

the first dart she will be looking for, now trouble 19. She's giving

has offered a chance. Great dart. Double eight. This will be the set

if she gets it in. Just making absolutely sure with the referee.

Anxious times. Double eight. She's got it! What definition that was! --

what a finish that was. Game very much on. 1-1 in the 2016 world

professional women's final. Well, from 133 to six. Not quite the

levels of concentration and she showed putting in that brilliant

checkout. Hedman looking to jump all over that. And doing so. Excellent

visit from the number three seed. Trina looking for the treble.

Trina put out the number one seed and the number four seed. The number

four seed is Aileen De Graaf. Deta in a good position. Huge lead. Might

not be, after this visit. Good darts. Outstanding first dart,

unlike the first. Gulliver is lying nicely, inviting those two over the

top. The second 140 of the final, for Deta Hedman. Leaves 145 for the

first leg of the third set. Treble 20. Treble 15, for tops, not this

time. Treble 18 now. That's a really good last dart. It sets up double 8

when she comes back. Tuna Gulliver applying some pressure, making that

double eight a must get for Hedman. Two 8s for the leg for Deta Hedman.

Perfect! A lot of rabbits and cats in the audience today, among the

people wearing fancy dress. There was a German Shepherd dog earlier in

the week! Watch out, if you see her again! Here we go. A sell-out crowd

at the Lakeside. Good dart. Fill it at! Brilliant! -- fill it up! A

second 180. Elaine and Paige, her daughters,

bellowing encouragement. Trina's niece is here as well, giving vocal

support. There they are. Hello! What the leg.

A little bit of an opportunity for Hedman to claw her way back in.

Already with the one leg lead in this third set. 150 can be made.

She's already had a 133, Gulliver, so you never know. And these are not

good darts. Treble 20. Half to switch down to try to tidy this one

up. -- have two. 108. Nice leave, Hedman. The tonne would have been

handy. A famous trophy will be awarded at the end of the match.

That is what they are playing for. As well as a few quid! 12 grand for

the winner. Splendid looking trophy, isn't it? Famous old silver trophy.

And five grand for the runner up. Treble 20 would leave bull's-eye. A

brilliant start to the leg, but just having a bit of a wobble. Edmund has

not got a checkout, on 166. -- Hedman has not got that. A tonne

would be handy. Lovely smooth throwing style. Good dart. 72, to

close out a leg. A leg that she was in real control of. That is more

like it. That is finishing of good quality.

All square in legs, and in sets. Precious little between them in

averages. And the checkouts from Gulliver, impressive. You would take

that every time, one out of two. You certainly would. A real family

occasion for the Gullivers. Trina Gulliver's sister on the left there.

Denise is shouting encouragement. Trina will not hear her, she is in

the zone. Might have heard that one! The Deta fans.

And athletic club about both players. Once upon a time, Deta

Hedman could have run a decent 400 metres. There is an athletic look

about them both. Michael Holding could run 400 metres in about 46

seconds, reputedly, another man who could do a bit in another sport.

Deta Hedman in a good position, against the throw. 242, just

composing herself. Another tonne would put her in a very handy

position. Room over the top. Good effort. Not quite. Deta throwing

with flat shoes. Trina, in contrast, throws with heels! What do you throw

with, John? On the board occasion that I am dragged into doing it I

normally wear the shoes I have worn all day. One day of doing it. To

hold throw. Not a good start. 16, the shot. 82. Hedman, to go to Fife

in one ahead. -- to go to -1 ahead. Treble 14 is another option. 18 now

would leave bull. Bull's-eye for Deta Hedman. Deta's there, with the

moustache. He was on a hoverboard in the bar last night! Tops! Needs this

one. Steps back. Knows that this is a big dart. A big pause, and amiss.

-- a miss. His experience with a hoverboard in the week, he

head-butted a door. Hedman. Needs 25. Double 4. 2s now, important

dart. She thought the second one was in. These are nervy darts. Nervy

moments. 1-1, in both sets and legs. Ten titles, or a first title, for

Deta. Oh, no. Surely this time? Oh! You would have thought that was

heading in. 11. -- double one. Not happy with the second one. Nor with

the third one. Let's have another go at this. 24 darts and homing in. It

is great drama. Has to move across, does not like that lie. It's going

to have to be 5s, these are awful. Yes! Nothing wrong with that! A lot

of tension. It means so much to both players. Trina only too well aware

that she is producing her best darts in years and Deta likewise, only too

well aware that for all her trophies and victories around the world she

has never taken the big one. Never had this. Spot on, it is a big

story, whatever happens here, title No ten, or finally, Deta's day. We

will find out. Got to hold your throat, Deta, otherwise Trina will

be head. The first to three sets will take the title. That is a nervy

one. Tagged that one well away. More like it.

Oh, dear, this is a chance for Gulliver now. It really is. Nerves

all over the place. A lot of nail-biting going on. Out there.

Tension is palpable. They are both struggling, in this

leg. Deta is coming down for 19s. That is the best visit of this leg,

by a distance. There is nothing between them.

Hedman has the throw, however. Gulliver leading 2-1, third set.

Look at these. Oh! It is another one! Another 180. And what a good

time to do it, her second of the match, and the fourth overall.

Leaving it on a nice finish. 72, now, two square up the set. Why

can't I do that all the time, she thinks to herself. 72, now. 20 would

leave tops. Double top. She will be back, though. 215, minus these, for

Gulliver. So, tops again. Gulliver a long way back on 160. A nice finish.

2-2. 1-1 in sets, 2-2 in legs and the

race from 501 begins again. A great start from Gulliver. Holds her

throat. Gulliver is head - holds her throw. She will be taking a two sets

to one advantage. Both of them are starting in style.

What Deta would give for another of those peppering is of the treble 20?

140 would improve her chances. Good darts. Needed that. 100 back and now

a bit of pressure on the Gulliver throw. Especially with that one,

straying into the five, and that one. Hopes for Hedman. It was

looking as if Gulliver was the more likely, now Hedman has turned it on

its head. Oh, dear, come on, she says to herself. Down, for the 19s.

82 puts her in a nice place. Big moments, these. Gulliver with the

darts. Hedman with an opportunity, from 116. This is the biggest leg of

the match so far. The crowd know it, the players know it. This for a lead

of 2-1. Treble 20 would leave double 18. No. Worked into the first dart.

She will have to wait, and hope that Gulliver is going to miss. It is a

big one, for a big hold. 150. For the set. What a start. Maybe treble

18, no? See what Hedman can do with 56. When she is at her best she gets

these are fun. But the cameras, the lights, the crowd, the prize, is she

going to take it out now? Tops. Double 10 for the set. Oh, no, no,

no. Two darts for the set, both missed by Deta Hedman. Will Gulliver

close it out now? Tops? She's going to need the last one. Oh, no! She

must have thought that second one was in. Listen to the crowd. Hedman.

This is the set. A nervy looking dart, the first one, at double 10.

Now she tries to compose herself again. She looks so serene but the

nerves will be jangling. She has taken it! And now she's leading 2-1!

In the pursuit of the prize that she has never taken before, she is now

one set away from being the champion. Terrific drama. Two said

darts missed but Gulliver could not pounds. Hedman then did, for a lead

of 2-1, and now has the throw. Exciting stuff, George. It really

is. Talk about the nerves that Deta Hedman showed on her previous visit,

she stood there, composed herself, and she threw that double 10 right

into the centre. Good stuff from Gulliver.

At the top level, it can just be an ability to refocus and not worry

about errors. It is easier said than done. The game against this Ashton a

couple of years ago, she looked as though she was on her way to victory

and for all the world it looked as though the occasion got to her as

Lisa came powering through. And still she has to get across that

winning line. Trina Gulliver will be well aware of that having been a

champion nine times herself will stop she has been there before and

gone across that line but Hedman never has. Dominating darts from

2001, Gulliver. Nine titles, two losing appearances in the final as

well. Hedman was a runner-up in 2012 and 2014. Is it that time lucky, two

years later? She will try and seek it out with the throw. Good darts.

Brilliant. A superb 140 just when she needed it. And she is on a

finish, 89 but a terrific response from Trina. Anything you can do. It

is a heavyweight contest now between two of the great names of women's

darts, double 16 to hold throw. The Gulliver is waiting on 80 as this

does not land. She will be going for 20s, double 10 now.

Double 5 remaining. For the first leg of set number four. For Deta

Hedman, the third seed. No, does not like that. Or that, double four.

Thought that was going in. A couple of 5s for Trina to take advantage in

this set, against the throw, there is the break.

Trina will regard that as a huge opportunity gained and for Deta

Hedman, one lost. Not a great start with the darts though, only 45 on

that trip from Trina. Excellent again from Gulliver who is

looking good to go two legs up in this fourth set. No finish but

Hedman is well back, at least she was. Great last dart from Deta

Hedman. Not too far back now if Gulliver slips up here, that will

help. 140, if she could pick that up, she would be sitting pretty.

That is just the wrong side of the wire. She has 23. Coming down. Well,

she has not put herself on a finish, that is a disastrous visit. How did

that happen? She is laughing but inside she won't be. You could see

the negative thoughts, she was trying to make sure that she put

herself on a finish rather than trying to get on a low finish.

Nerves. 177, surely Deta is not going to unravel again. Sometimes

you can want something too much. Got to keep her composure. Still a

fairway to go. Who wants this? 84 for Hedman. 14

would leave bull. A big darts, bull's-eye. Trina Gulliver, 24 2-0.

That is 2-0. Suddenly Deta Hedman is looking a

little bit nervous up there. You fancy this is going the distance.

Abe amused look from Deta Hedman. Nerves all over the place. That is

Paul, Deta's fella, looks fairly relaxed. Two big favourites, these

two. I know how you are feeling mate. I

was confessing to my lack of knowledge about Eastenders earlier

on, I will say more about that after this because Gulliver was on for her

third maximum. We have Derek Martin in the audience tonight who was

Charlie Slater, I say was because my mate has texted me to say that he

died on Thursday night. Thank you. Chris is coming up to get a bit of

Lakeside action tomorrow. It will be good to see Chris, he can talk us

through the Eastenders action as well. No finish for Gulliver, six

darts from here. Oh dear again. Is it the tension? Was it bad luck?

Looks like nerves to me. That is what Paul reckons, he will know

better than us I reckon. Good darts. 79.

Double 11, wrong bed, double 3, oh yes. That will settle the nerves a

little bit. Nobody likes double 3, inadvertent exhibition darts.

Not a great start from Trina Gulliver, Hedman can build on that

checkout. Real pressure on the hold now. With Hedman leading 2-1 and the

finishing line at three. If Hedman were to win this, she would be

throwing for the set and the match. She knows exactly. She wants it so

very badly, Deta Hedman. Oh dear. A bit hot for that. This is better.

Down for 19 is. Paul living every moment with Deta.

All kinds of worse for husbands, wives, friends anyone. It is much

worse, you cannot do anything, as the player, it is in your hands. You

can see what they are playing for, on the stage, every time they

collect their darts. The famous silver trophy awaits the winner.

Another message, apparently Charlie had a heart attack in Eastenders.

Could be a bit tense, this one, if it goes all the way.

Has Gulliver taken charge of this set with that visit? 50 needed and

that checkout and she will have an opportunity to take it and level the

match up. She has eight out of 28, Trina Gulliver. How she would like

another double now. She was five out of ten earlier as well. Tops. For

the set. Hedman for a finish to level up the set 80, she will go

with treble 20, if she gets the single, she will need another one

and then tops, if you get one, you are in a mess, treble 19 would be

double 11, that was not very close, was it. Angry with herself.

Here we go again, to take us to a deciding set on it will have to be

double 5 again and it is double 5 and it is 2-2, we are going all the

dart. She pulled it fully and inch away from the target she was looking

That is great darts but she was not going for a finish, the problem is

when she is looking to close it out, that is when the nerves come in.

Double two, this 42-0 to put her within a leg of the match. The

tension is unbelievable. Another go. 41-1 in the decider. One, double

two. Barely on the board. A huge miss again. I am afraid to say, this

is history being repeated. Gulliver 42-0. Trina Gulliver is closing in,

she only needs one more leg and she is the champion for a 10th time.

What a story. That we have ruling at Lakeside. A bit of unwelcome

symmetry beckoning for Deta Hedman, runner up 2012, 2014, will she be

second best two years on again? She conceal extricate herself from this

mess but she needs to hit doubles, she has kept on scoring OK but the

doubles have let her down big time. When it has come to the key

checkouts, Deta, as the finishing line has got closer, she has looked

more and more jittery. Her game has gone really under pressure and the

body language tells you everything you need to know. A lovely person

who wants this trophy so very much. It is not going for her now.

Gulliver is poised to accelerate away. That was a huge bounce out

come almost hit the feet of Deta Hedman. Had to move out of the way.

It is getting closer for Trina Gulliver, title number ten within

her sights. Come on she says, been there before, done it before, she

knows how to be a winner here. Her best darts in years she has played

here at the Lakeside. Last time she won it was in 2011. Not on a finish

yet but a long way clear, a shake of the head from Hedman, she cannot

believe what she is doing up there and I am afraid to say, Deta, it is

happening once more. Can she somehow still turn it around? Not with darts

like that. To set up a finish. From 181. Only takes 60 of it but she is

first to a finish and a finish that would yield that world title once

more. Hedman needs a huge visit and a cross of the fingers, that is the

best start possible. Needs another, down for 19 is, a good start, here

we go, Hedman not on a finish and this is for the title. Good dart.

She would normally go is 11, 25 would leave double 18, treble 11

would leave you double 14, she went for the 25, did not anticipate

getting the treble 20: normally you would go treble 17 and bull. She is

in a handy place. She will be back for tops for the title. Can Hedman

apply any pressure? Yes, she can. Got to find a third dart. She gets

the treble but it might be in vain. Can the golden girl find the Midas

touch again? This is for it. Title number ten. Two tops is all she

requires, could do it with her eyes closed, a bit different now, 39

left, double 18 with that, this for the title. Can she take it out? She

can. She does. Trina Gulliver at the age of 46 is the champion once more,

we did not expect her to do it here and there are two is a joy up their

com a champion for a record 10th time. Deta Hedman, sad to say, the

perhaps just could not cope with the magnitude of the occasion again and

for the third time she has two accept the runners-up prize. Trina

Gulliver has come back to the zenith of the sport am a brilliant

performance and she will get the check for ?12,000 and also she will

get the winner 's trophy and what a moment for her it will be. Ladies

and gentlemen, a round of applause for these two epic finalists. Deta,

so close yet again, you have been and you are an incredible ambassador

for women starts, so mini people out there wanted you to win but it was

not quite meant to be again. I gave it what I could, I have played

reasonably well all week, I have not had my top game. Credit to Trina,

her 10th title, well done. She played what was in front of her and

there is not much I can say. You have worked so hard over the years,

for 18 years you have worked night shifts in the post office, surely

one day this title will be yours. Trina, what a story, what a journey.

It started in 2001, and here you are, you've nailed number ten. I

know! I absolutely, absolutely delighted. It was always going to be

a tough game against Deta, it was always going to be a battle. Was

there ever a time when you doubted you would get into double figures?

Things have not been easy for you and the family off the oche. Was

there a time when you thought this glorious moment would not come? Yes,

many a time. We have had a bit of personal problems with the family

and everything. But yes, I was hoping for it. I've got fire in my

belly again. You certainly have, and you've been an incredible ambassador

for women starts and what we've seen here at Lakeside over the last week

is an indication as to how far the sport has come, and surely that is

as important to your legacy as the ten titles. You have paved the way

for a new generation of female darts players. Thank you, that's nice of

you to say. Like you said it started in 2001. We are here again. Ladies

darts is getting stronger and stronger and stronger. Well, enjoy

To receive ?12,000, that magnificent trophy for a tense time, the 2016

Lakeside world ladies champion is the golden girl, Trina Gulliver.

Emotional scenes here at Lakeside. As Trina Gulliver rolls back the

years and is champion once again. Many people thought her best days

had gone. Deta Hedman may have thought that as well but she came up

short once more. And Trina Gulliver is the champion. Great enduring

scenes, there. The crowd celebrating with her. And it's a victory that

proves that nice guys can win in sport. Terrific performance through

the week from Trina Gulliver, and she is our 2016 women's Lakeside

champion. Well they say one can be lucky, to a

sign of class, three is legend status. So pray tell, what is ten?

In the 21st-century she's been to women starts what Phil Taylor has

been to men's without even close to the same level of remuneration or

credit. She certainly gets it today. Ten times for Trina. I want to know

what she said to the trophy. She had it for nine years, she said

something to it, she talked to it like it was a child. She must have

said, I've got you back. Where have you been? Come back to me. And she

was absolutely value for it over the last nine days. She's the deserved

winner. Yeah, well she hit her doubles, she held it together. Deta

Hedman just held -- just lost it completely. Bag of nerves. She

wanted it so bad she could not win it. Let's concentrate on Trina for

now. Many people said that darts, for many reasons because of Trina,

had moved on, had evolved, women starts. Not left her time, but the

new breed of favourites. If we put a bet on nine days ago we would have

got long odds. Maybe her greatest achievement is her 10th title. Any

achievement winning the World Championship is a marvellous thing

to do. Sometimes you can argue about that. But at the beginning of the

week I would never have thought she would have got to the final, she had

been struggling with a game for three or four years. Winning all the

tournaments all round the world, she has come here and won it again. Good

for the ladies. There are more ladies playing now and a better

standard, a lot better. The women have gone right up in their

standard. 2001 was the first ladies title. Think how many men's titles

there had been until then. Showing it live on television has only been

the last few years. Only really the last couple have had that, and it

does inspire and encourage. We've seen Lorraine Stanley hitting 86

average. We've seen and Louise Peters hit the highest ever checkup

in the history of women starts with 160. Despite all that going on,

Trina has won her 10th title. Whether it is old or new it is all

part of the really successful story at the moment for women's darts. If

Trina wins the 10th one, there's a lot of young girls out there who

think, well, I could win it, now. If they go to the clubs and the

different tournaments, they can get in here. Like you say there's a load

of them that's come through the rankings in the last five years,

really. And a word for Deta, she was 2-1 up, and you could physically see

it in her face. The fires of hell arrive and the nerves are in every

sinew. You knew it was there. It is written all over her face. Yeah,

when you get to that position, you've got to hold it together,

really, haven't you? Yeah. And Trina did actually hold it together.

Double 18 when it went in, she must have thought, lovely, I am back

again. Now they will be trying to beat her up in the open is, she is

world champion. She deserved it. Absolutely, and hopefully Deta's

time will come at some stage. I don't know where her head will be

for the next month, maybe two months, maybe three. But here at the

Lakeside today we watched Trina Gulliver win her 10th, her historic

10th, double figures, world champion yet again. That will be part of the

highlights later today when you can join us on the BBC at midnight. They

thought her darting glory days were over, but they were wrong. 10th

title for golden girl.
