you are switching over from BBC Two after what has been an agonising

:00:19.:00:23.

hour or two on the final day of this quarterfinal tie between Italy and

:00:24.:00:27.

Great Britain. Great Britain are leading 2-1 going into today's match

:00:28.:00:31.

and we were hoping we wouldn't need a fifth singles because Andy Murray,

:00:32.:00:38.

if he were to beat Fognini, he would ensure Britain went through to their

:00:39.:00:45.

first semifinal in 33 years. But Andy Murray is a set and a break

:00:46.:00:49.

down now. One of the best clay-court players in the world, Fognini, is

:00:50.:00:54.

very much in the ascendancy. If Murray was going to come back from

:00:55.:00:58.

this position, this would be one of the best wins of his entire career.

:00:59.:01:03.

It is a great setting for a bit of sporting history. And, boy, what a

:01:04.:01:08.

lot of sporting drama these two are providing.

:01:09.:01:12.

I couldn't agree more. You have to look at this from the neutral point

:01:13.:01:24.

of view, it is a fabulous match. Every rubber has been close. There

:01:25.:01:29.

is a lot of tennis still to be played.

:01:30.:01:44.

If you are just joining this match, Murray lost the last five games the

:01:45.:01:58.

first set and Fognini took it 6-3. Second set, Murray was down to hold

:01:59.:02:08.

serve, and it was a long six-game and it was crucial for the Italian.

:02:09.:02:15.

Fognini struck with the single break in this set so far in the seventh

:02:16.:02:18.

game. Those shots are so high, he has to

:02:19.:02:39.

take it early, Fognini is already two steps inside the baseline. And

:02:40.:02:44.

then you are in no man's land. Second serve ace to win the game for

:02:45.:03:03.

Fognini. This has had everything so far. We saw Andy do this a few days

:03:04.:03:15.

ago. There is no pace required. If you can just get the right

:03:16.:03:19.

trajectory and the right angle, you don't have to do anything with it.

:03:20.:03:41.

How well does he do that when he gets to the drop shots. He pushes it

:03:42.:03:49.

a foot from the baseline. Here it comes. Just shuffles it down deep.

:03:50.:04:36.

We have got a football crowd in the tennis stadium!

:04:37.:05:04.

They know all about football crowds here with Napoli doing well lately,

:05:05.:05:13.

and Rafa Benitez playing their old rivals Juventus at the weekend.

:05:14.:05:20.

There's a bit of hostility between those two club sides.

:05:21.:05:34.

Fognini is firmly in charge at the moment. And two more break points on

:05:35.:05:42.

the Murray serve means that it is set point for Italy in this rubber.

:05:43.:06:13.

This second serve might sum it up a bit. He's getting tired. Fognini is

:06:14.:06:21.

expanding far less energy on each of his shots because he is using his

:06:22.:06:27.

hands, his wrists, his arm on most of his strokes. And now it is a

:06:28.:06:28.

little bit worrying. Just put this match into context,

:06:29.:06:41.

this is how, the final morning, or the final afternoon, the World Cup

:06:42.:06:45.

quarterfinals look. The Czech Republic have beaten Japan 5-0. And

:06:46.:06:50.

they are playing the winners of France against Germany, Germany 2-0

:06:51.:06:58.

up, France better yesterday, and Benneteau and Wilfred Tsonga are

:06:59.:07:03.

trying to get their win. Switzerland are 2-0 down against has extolled.

:07:04.:07:13.

If you've joined us, this is the first of three, because it is the

:07:14.:07:19.

best of five, if Andy Murray were to come back and win, Great Britain

:07:20.:07:24.

would go into the last fortnight. The way things are looking, if

:07:25.:07:30.

Fognini does win, all the mat should and all the aspirations will come

:07:31.:07:35.

down to a match between Andreas Seppi and James Ward, who played so

:07:36.:07:40.

well in the USA against Sam Querrey to give Britain their win. So, the

:07:41.:07:44.

pressure is on this man. You'd rather be in his position that Andy

:07:45.:07:52.

Murray's. It occurred to me the last time that Italy played Scotland in a

:07:53.:07:56.

major sporting event, internationally, it was in the Six

:07:57.:08:00.

Nations championship, and Italy had far and away the best of the match,

:08:01.:08:05.

and Scotland won with a last second drop goal from Duncan Weir. I'd like

:08:06.:08:10.

to implant that thought into Andy Murray's head at this moment.

:08:11.:08:17.

Murray has to come from two sets down in this man's backyard to win

:08:18.:08:26.

this particular match. Get in touch with your thoughts wherever you are

:08:27.:08:30.

around the country, gripped by this, I'm sure. Go to our website for

:08:31.:08:37.

extra analysis and comment, get in touch.

:08:38.:08:46.

We'd love to hear from you. If you're having to pop out and about,

:08:47.:08:52.

there's live commentary right now on radio Five Live. And get the BBC

:08:53.:08:58.

sport app if you haven't already. And I'm afraid that is what Britain

:08:59.:11:31.

are dealing with right here! Inspired tennis from Italy's leader,

:11:32.:11:38.

Fabio Fognini. That is the first to smile I have seen from the captain.

:11:39.:11:45.

He very rarely smiles, period, very nice fellow, but he never smiles!

:11:46.:11:50.

That is one of the best shots I have ever seen taken from that position

:11:51.:11:56.

on the court. It's so difficult because you're facing the wrong way.

:11:57.:12:03.

You just have to use your arm, and the timing you'd need to get that

:12:04.:12:11.

kind of power... What a talent. Well, Andy Murray has an excellent

:12:12.:12:15.

five set record over the course of his career, and he is no stranger to

:12:16.:12:26.

2-1 victories. But this is a completely different proposition. 15

:12:27.:12:40.

set comeback win -- one five set comeback win in the Davis Cup. And

:12:41.:12:43.

the way this man is playing, Fognini, it is difficult to

:12:44.:12:48.

visualise right now. This is where Andy, though, this is where he has

:12:49.:12:53.

got to compose himself. It is almost like Houllier 's comedy show

:12:54.:12:58.

Fognini, when looks at him, you've got to beat me. Thus -- it is almost

:12:59.:13:06.

like he has to show Fognini. I wonder, he came out with a plan in

:13:07.:13:23.

the first set. In the second set, he thought, I'd give it another shot,

:13:24.:13:28.

maybe I can change it up slightly. So, in the third set, does he try

:13:29.:13:34.

something completely new? At the moment, the match is in Fognini's

:13:35.:13:39.

hands, the way he is taking charge of these rallies. Well, that is a

:13:40.:13:45.

change-up, first-time we have seen that.

:13:46.:13:52.

Sneak attack, serve and folly. -- volley.

:13:53.:14:30.

First one he has missed? He is capable of going through the spells

:14:31.:14:38.

of dodgy looking points. Murray has got to keep his level hive. Just

:14:39.:14:43.

keep forcing him and hope that his level will drop a bit.

:14:44.:15:37.

Just amazing how well he has hit that shot. He pushes Murray backs so

:15:38.:15:49.

deep there and then, boom. Abbreviate the swing and drops it

:15:50.:15:50.

glow. He has a career high-ranking at the

:15:51.:16:24.

moment of 13. He saved match points in Indian Wells Open your other week

:16:25.:16:33.

against Monfils. Then the final in Buena sire is. -- Buenos Iris. He

:16:34.:16:48.

has reached the final of five of his last six tournaments on clay court.

:16:49.:17:00.

On form, there are few finer than Fognini. On this surface. Murray is

:17:01.:17:12.

going to have to hit shots like that for the rest of the day to keep this

:17:13.:17:14.

alive. That was the right shot to go for,

:17:15.:17:30.

he pulled it wide. He's got to step in on those and get it.

:17:31.:17:46.

Murray having success down-the-line now. It is one of his favourite

:17:47.:17:52.

shots with the backhand. Some say he doesn't use it enough. It is a

:17:53.:17:57.

difficult shot and a great shot when it works. He leans into it so well,

:17:58.:18:02.

extends the racket head. The crowd not enjoying the

:18:03.:19:16.

celebrations of Murray, and the British spectators after that point.

:19:17.:19:17.

Oh, well. There is the response from the

:19:18.:19:27.

locals! Jonathan, you have had a lot of

:19:28.:20:33.

matches in your time, is this one of the best atmospheres you've ever

:20:34.:20:37.

seen? It is not the biggest stadium. But the noise they are making. It's

:20:38.:20:46.

great. There will be purists around saying, it is too noisy, but I am

:20:47.:20:51.

not in that camp at all. I like the way Murray is trying to hit through

:20:52.:20:55.

it. That is one way to try to silence them. It's not like the

:20:56.:21:00.

locals are behaving poorly. OK, there are a couple of jeers, but you

:21:01.:21:06.

expect that. I had poor instructor at me! This is nothing! That was in

:21:07.:21:15.

Rome, wasn't it? Yes, and in Barcelona, the crowd had a punch-up

:21:16.:21:19.

after the match. Iran's away very quickly. How is their economy right

:21:20.:21:28.

now? It is iffy, they've got to save those coins. It is hard work with

:21:29.:21:35.

the sun beating down on this part of Italy. There are some great clouds

:21:36.:21:39.

above, but it is the nicest weather of the tie so far. Dominic giving us

:21:40.:21:48.

great insight into the extra physical demands of playing on clay,

:21:49.:21:53.

particularly right at the start of the clay-court season. It is a

:21:54.:21:55.

transition for all of these pairs from the hard court to the clay, the

:21:56.:22:01.

different physical challenges that brings.

:22:02.:22:30.

Murray just needs to have something to cling to. He has got to build,

:22:31.:22:36.

point by point. But he cannot do that kind of thing.

:22:37.:22:50.

He cannot give away cheap points. On Court yesterday, mid-morning, to

:22:51.:23:07.

finish off his singles against Andreas Seppi. Still on court as the

:23:08.:23:10.

sun was sweeping down. Then he finished off the doubles

:23:11.:23:26.

with his partner Colin Fleming. That's one of the toughest things,

:23:27.:23:30.

the accumulation of fact. It's not just how many hours he was caught in

:23:31.:23:35.

the singles and doubles, it was the psychological, mental tiredness of

:23:36.:23:38.

getting up for one match, getting ready for the singles and then only

:23:39.:23:43.

having an hour and a half, then preparing for another doubles which

:23:44.:23:44.

was very emotional. The backhand down-the-line winning

:23:45.:23:59.

key points. In the last service game, he lost

:24:00.:24:43.

the returns. He had some chances, he was close. As it gets closer to the

:24:44.:24:48.

finish line, that is when Fognini can start getting a little tired.

:24:49.:25:02.

That was close, very close on the line, but I think it is just out.

:25:03.:25:10.

Despite how relaxed Fognini looks, you've got to remember that he's

:25:11.:25:13.

playing for his country to get to semifinals. This is their chance to

:25:14.:25:20.

be the world number six or seven? He is down at number eight. Doesn't

:25:21.:25:26.

matter where you are, there is going to be nervous. -- nerves.

:25:27.:25:45.

He is starting to blame someone else for his poor second serve. That is a

:25:46.:25:52.

good sign from the British point of view.

:25:53.:26:08.

That is a big return to miss at 0-15 and he knows it. That was a big

:26:09.:26:13.

point. That is the shot he does so well. I

:26:14.:26:57.

thought Andy played a good point, a good folly. Great volley, but... He

:26:58.:27:09.

is a natural clay-court mover. He makes shots look so easy. He is not

:27:10.:27:15.

tall, is not tall comedy 's got a low centre of gravity, he changes to

:27:16.:27:21.

rich and very quickly. -- he is not a tall guy, he has got a low centre

:27:22.:27:23.

of gravity. Fognini is perceived as hothead, but

:27:24.:28:13.

he has been playing great. He has. Pity for Murray. It was a big point.

:28:14.:28:20.

Double fault and then a second serve to Murray's backhand, and all of a

:28:21.:28:28.

sudden he could be up zero -30, but if you let off the hook, he can be

:28:29.:28:34.

inspirational. He can reel off to three points. If you get a chance,

:28:35.:28:38.

you've got to take it, and that is the one thing Murray has done

:28:39.:28:43.

today, his first serve hasn't been as good as we would like either.

:28:44.:28:49.

You've got to hand it to the Italian. He has played some tennis

:28:50.:28:55.

today that is stunning. As good as anybody in the world on clay-court

:28:56.:28:56.

when he plays like this. Different service motions. Murray

:28:57.:29:16.

extends and snaps the ball better than Fognini. It is a good serve,

:29:17.:29:21.

not too many aces, but pretty consistent normally. But Andy Murray

:29:22.:29:25.

has not hit as many big serves and we would like, as many first

:29:26.:29:29.

serves. His first service percentage is lower than we would have liked. A

:29:30.:29:32.

lot lower. He got away with a mishit there.

:29:33.:30:04.

Fognini's record in Davis Cup, he has only lost once on clay in 1

:30:05.:30:10.

Davis Cup matches. You can certainly see why. That was

:30:11.:30:18.

on his debut, you have to go back to 2008, against Gulbis who is a player

:30:19.:30:22.

not short on talent himself. Won 11 in a row.

:30:23.:30:55.

Good for Murray at the end of that point, where he let out a shout of

:30:56.:31:04.

"Yes." It is important not only to keep that message to himself but to

:31:05.:31:08.

show his opponent he believes he can win this match. He is a two Grand

:31:09.:31:13.

Slam winner, that carries a lot mentally.

:31:14.:31:25.

Two sidelines and one baseline hit in three shots. There is no beating

:31:26.:31:31.

that. Look at this. That is the second

:31:32.:31:36.

one. It hits the baseline. This one hits the sideline. Thank you very

:31:37.:31:39.

much. How do you teach accuracy like that,

:31:40.:31:51.

is it relentless practise. It is. You have to have the talent to do it

:31:52.:31:58.

and faith. It is drills, over and over again.

:31:59.:32:18.

That is a bad miss. He knows that. The chance of a break.

:32:19.:32:31.

Start to see the finishing line here, just a little bit.

:32:32.:32:41.

Two sets to love, middle of the third. Good hold from Murray. Very

:32:42.:32:55.

good hold. Again, that was own those errors,

:32:56.:34:04.

that is a cheap error, playing against this sort of talent, don't

:34:05.:34:08.

give anything away, make him earn it.

:34:09.:34:30.

Very lucky there from the Italian. That backhand down-the-line he hit

:34:31.:34:36.

was going out and it hit the top of net and bent straight back in to

:34:37.:34:43.

court. Got away with that one. Ended up playing a beautiful point

:34:44.:34:48.

to close out the point, but very fortunate.

:34:49.:36:34.

That was good when he hit it. You would see from his, it is just wide

:36:35.:36:49.

and Fognini holds for 4-3. He edges closer, leading 2-0, two

:36:50.:36:55.

games away po ten tally. What an effort it has been from the number

:36:56.:36:59.

one player of Italy. Murray needs all the help he the he can get, the

:37:00.:37:05.

staff and team mays will be cheering him on. Let us go to court side. The

:37:06.:37:11.

team bench doing their bit, despite the fact their man is up against it.

:37:12.:37:15.

They are encouraging as regularly as they can, applauding and cheering,

:37:16.:37:18.

Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins are down there, Dan Evans down there

:37:19.:37:24.

too, not selected ultimately for this tie, he has remain here,

:37:25.:37:28.

supporting the players, James Ward not there, and will come as no

:37:29.:37:32.

surprise, because there is only 20 minutes between matches and he may

:37:33.:37:35.

need to come up very soon and go one better than he did in San Diego,

:37:36.:37:42.

that was some win over Sam Querry. If he needs to beat Seppi to take

:37:43.:37:46.

Great Britain into the semifinals. That will be some margin, the

:37:47.:37:50.

greatest achievement of his career. Thank you. At least he has that

:37:51.:37:54.

experience which could prove so crucial. Statistics. Tennis players

:37:55.:38:00.

will tell you they don't read much into them, when they love them. Here

:38:01.:38:03.

is an interesting one for you, Fognini over the course of the

:38:04.:38:08.

match, has a better winning percentage of points played on his

:38:09.:38:14.

second serve, than on his first. 68 percent first serve points won, 73

:38:15.:38:20.

percent second serve points won. That is remarkable, because Murray's

:38:21.:38:25.

attacked it quite often. That shows how quick he is and how well he has

:38:26.:38:29.

backed up that serve from the baseline, because it is very

:38:30.:38:32.

hittable his second serve, but if you move like he does, he is greased

:38:33.:38:38.

lightning, I suppose he can counter act whatever comes at him. Now we

:38:39.:38:42.

are at the business end of this set, now, now it becomes extremely

:38:43.:38:46.

interesting right here, this is obviously a must win game for

:38:47.:38:48.

Murray. -- must-win. Two very easy comfortable points for

:38:49.:39:38.

Murray. He has been in both of these rally, no problem, then two errors.

:39:39.:39:47.

The sooner he can get out of this game, the better, to put pressure on

:39:48.:39:54.

Fognini as soon as possible. It is a sloppy game.

:39:55.:40:16.

That is what the doctor ordered from Murray. Not to expend any energy

:40:17.:40:23.

holding that servement you expect that is going to be a tough game for

:40:24.:40:31.

him, won it easily, now, as Dom said he can pull all his energy.

:40:32.:40:39.

Suddenly, your opponent, you have to serve again. It feels like you are

:40:40.:40:43.

always serving, and there is more pressure. Someone has held easy,

:40:44.:40:46.

that can subconsciously impact you. The sequence here of comfortable

:40:47.:42:33.

service games. Goodness. I have seen it all. I have

:42:34.:42:40.

seen it all. How on earth? Not only did he get that but win the point

:42:41.:42:45.

from that position. Seriously, this is impossible.

:42:46.:42:52.

That is remarkable. That is so demoralising as well. When you hit a

:42:53.:42:55.

great shot and a person pulls that out and you are thinking what do I

:42:56.:43:00.

have to do to win a point? What do I have to do? ! He covered the right

:43:01.:43:07.

way, he did everything right, just inspirational tennis. This crowd!

:43:08.:43:25.

It's all happening, really. Britain needs something to cling to,

:43:26.:43:34.

John, at the moment the momentum well and truly with Italy. Two sets

:43:35.:43:39.

up, 5-4. Murray is about to serve to stay in this match. What must James

:43:40.:43:47.

Ward be feeling behind the scenes? 161 in the world and now he has to

:43:48.:43:52.

come and play Andreas Seppi, and he will hope to, it is the deciding

:43:53.:43:57.

match. Deciding -- rubber of the tie. He is an experienced Davis Cup

:43:58.:44:12.

player. Listen to the crowd here. Great stuff. But he won't be

:44:13.:44:17.

expecting this score line, psychologically he would have

:44:18.:44:20.

thought this would be a close match at worsts, and to see his number

:44:21.:44:26.

one, you know, sort of getting beaten easily, that is not easy

:44:27.:44:31.

psychologically. It is not over yet. No. No breaks of serve, no break

:44:32.:44:35.

points in this third set so far. But Murray serving to stay in it.

:44:36.:46:01.

What a setting here. Look at that. If Fognini can win to more points

:46:02.:46:08.

the noise is going to reverberate all the way up to coast, to Rome.

:46:09.:46:20.

Now he only needs one more point. Three match points to Fognini.

:46:21.:46:33.

He caught Andy by surprise. It goes to show you never, you know, give up

:46:34.:46:38.

on any cause. If he can win this from 0-40, that

:46:39.:47:37.

would be a great opportunity to break the next game. It is his

:47:38.:47:42.

favourite serve here, crunch it. Fabio Fognini, plays one of the

:47:43.:48:24.

matches of his life, to keep the tie alive. Going all the way in Naples.

:48:25.:48:44.

What a performance. One of the best clay court which -- clay court

:48:45.:48:48.

players in the world. There can't be any doubt about form. Too strong for

:48:49.:49:00.

Murray on the day. Look at these scenes. People truly

:49:01.:49:04.

believe and thousand nay have to be favourites.

:49:05.:49:10.

They believe, the crowd believes. Unbelievable. The British did not

:49:11.:49:29.

believe as much. This record he has of wins on clay for his country

:49:30.:49:35.

continues. Still hasn't lost since his debut, Murray ice first singles

:49:36.:49:40.

defeat in Davis Cup since his debut. Good effort from him over the

:49:41.:49:44.

weekend, don't forget about the stomach bug he had on the day before

:49:45.:49:51.

the tie. He has put himself out there. Fognini will be enjoying this

:49:52.:49:58.

experience. He has been Italy's hero, all round the world, certainly

:49:59.:50:03.

in Argentina, the last round, and now potentially here, on home clay.

:50:04.:50:12.

One suspects he will be enjoying this adulation right now. Oh yes he

:50:13.:50:17.

is. You don't have to zip your tracksuit up but it would help. So

:50:18.:50:21.

James Ward, now then, what are you made of? Have you got another big

:50:22.:50:27.

Davis Cup performance for your country left in you? Well, Andreas

:50:28.:50:36.

Seppi is the opponent. That is next. Of all the possible scenarios of

:50:37.:50:41.

that fourth rubber, Murray losing in straight sets was not one many of us

:50:42.:50:46.

countenance, that is why fogging if is one of the best clay court

:50:47.:50:49.

players in the world. His speed round the court was absolutely

:50:50.:50:53.

stunning, and maybe there wasn't enough left in the Murray tank for

:50:54.:50:57.

him to win that match. -- Fabio Fognini. The match statistics are

:50:58.:51:00.

there for you, to see, but the bottom line as Jonathan Overend said

:51:01.:51:05.

in the commentary, is come the hour, come James Ward, if ever there was

:51:06.:51:09.

an opportunity, for you to write your name, in the annals of British

:51:10.:51:15.

tennis history. There he is now, knocking up earlier on today with

:51:16.:51:20.

Andy Murray. He will know that irrespective of what happened

:51:21.:51:23.

against Sam Querry in San Diego a few weeks ago, this is a bigger

:51:24.:51:28.

task, but the prize is so much greater, the incentive is so much

:51:29.:51:32.

greater. The pressure is that much greater, but the opportunity is that

:51:33.:51:36.

much greater too, for the Londoner. So if you need clarification of

:51:37.:51:41.

where we sit on the match, then this is it. Set against that fantastic

:51:42.:51:46.

backdrop. Obviously Fognini got things off to a good start for the

:51:47.:51:50.

Italians by beating James Ward. Murray beat Seppi. That pep -- epic

:51:51.:51:55.

doubles that Murray and fleping won and Fognini winning in straight sets

:51:56.:51:59.

for the loss of just ten games against Andy Murray, and so now,

:52:00.:52:04.

opportunity knocks for James Ward. -- Fleming.

:52:05.:52:06.

I suppose if you are watching this morning and you are a neutral, if

:52:07.:52:10.

ever there was a justification for the Davis Cup as a competition, then

:52:11.:52:14.

this is it in terms of atmosphere, in terms of drama, in terms of

:52:15.:52:20.

sporting ebb and flow. This is just fantastic.

:52:21.:52:24.

It is. That is what the competition is so great. That is why we have to

:52:25.:52:29.

protect it and make it so the top players play regularly, when you get

:52:30.:52:33.

a match like this the whole world should see it. Not just Italy and

:52:34.:52:38.

Britain. It is brilliant drama. I think we can go live to Fabio

:52:39.:52:41.

Fognini, he is good value on the court, and he tends to be good value

:52:42.:52:52.

off it as well. I have Italy's new national hero

:52:53.:52:58.

with me, Fabio Fognini, you must be Italy's latest hero after that. No,

:52:59.:53:03.

no, no. I just play better than Andy, that is the tennis. We know

:53:04.:53:08.

that this sport is really difficult, especially Andy, because he plays to

:53:09.:53:13.

win. The last match yesterday and today was a bit tighter with the

:53:14.:53:18.

serve, I tell you yesterday, it was, I focus on my game to try to do my

:53:19.:53:23.

best, and it is going in the perfect way. Today, I think, was important

:53:24.:53:29.

for me, especially for me, because I beat a player like, you know, he won

:53:30.:53:38.

everything, and of course because 2-1, it was a difficult match,

:53:39.:53:43.

really tough, and then, you know, I was doing my best, and I played. You

:53:44.:53:49.

played magnificently, there were one or two British fans that made life

:53:50.:53:53.

difficult for you early on, but the Italian fans were absolutely

:53:54.:53:57.

incredible, weren't they? That is the crowd. Especially in Naples, it

:53:58.:54:03.

is always difficult, the support is today, it is unbelievable. It is a

:54:04.:54:10.

sun -- sunny day, it is Sunday, we play two great players like me and

:54:11.:54:17.

Andy, and you know, now I have no voices, I am really happy for this

:54:18.:54:23.

point, time to recover well, do the press and now to do it... One more

:54:24.:54:32.

win for Italy required now. Andreas Seppi, against James Ward, is that

:54:33.:54:36.

match that you are very confident I Italy can win? Of course, we are

:54:37.:54:40.

confident about it. I just say yesterday, it is everything can

:54:41.:54:44.

happen in the Davis Cup, I beat Andy today, of course I, he was

:54:45.:54:48.

favouriten the course, but you know, I tell you, just to think about our

:54:49.:54:56.

game, I think. James, you know, he is a really good player, he played

:54:57.:55:01.

good with me yesterday, but of course, if I had to say something

:55:02.:55:07.

now, we are 51-49. It is an important point. Anything can

:55:08.:55:13.

happen, but of course, Andy is going to be supporting for the team and

:55:14.:55:19.

the crowd. Well play and go and enjoy the moment and enjoy -- and

:55:20.:55:26.

join the rest of your team as we wait for Andreas Seppi and James

:55:27.:55:29.

Ward to take court. They should be with us in about 20 minutes time.

:55:30.:55:35.

That is fabulous Fabio, he says it is 51-49. You said it was 70-0

:55:36.:55:40.

before the match. Would you revise that now? No. I would take 51-49

:55:41.:55:46.

every time. I think it was talking to Dom about it, think in the locker

:55:47.:55:50.

room, before, when Ward was getting ready at a set-and-a-half. You have

:55:51.:55:54.

to prepare for a fifth match obviously, but deep down, believe

:55:55.:55:57.

me, Ward is thinking that Murray is going to win this match before he

:55:58.:56:02.

goes out there and then he is getting beaten easily. It has to

:56:03.:56:06.

have a slight demoralising effect and it is wow I have to get ready.

:56:07.:56:13.

That makes it tougher. To pursue that further, if James Ward woke up

:56:14.:56:17.

thinking I probably won't have to play today, that affects your whole

:56:18.:56:21.

body language, you mood, demeanour and suddenly it is like a computer

:56:22.:56:26.

gear shift, you think, oh, I am going to be on now, not I am going

:56:27.:56:30.

to be on, I am going to be on with the destination of the tie the my

:56:31.:56:35.

hands. Yes it is nerve-wracking, and, I think as John said, the team

:56:36.:56:39.

that the morale is going to be low, because that was, that was a quick

:56:40.:56:45.

match and it was convincing, for Italy, so that is going to creep

:56:46.:56:49.

into the locker room. They will try and keep him up beat, but it is

:56:50.:56:52.

going to be tough. He will have to come out firing. James has the

:56:53.:56:57.

ability, he has, he can produce an upset and he he can win. Will he?

:56:58.:57:02.

That is another question. He has to go out and start fast, and really

:57:03.:57:06.

take it to him. Talk about starting faths. Andy Murray got off to a

:57:07.:57:11.

flier. He was 3-1. One or two in the back room team were saying it is all

:57:12.:57:16.

over now. Slightly prematurely and it went, he fell off a cliff after

:57:17.:57:21.

that We thought early on the first set was critical, and unfortunately,

:57:22.:57:26.

Murray did start well, but you know, Fabio, he kept hanging in there and

:57:27.:57:30.

all of a sudden, as we said that he can string these winners together

:57:31.:57:34.

and show how brilliant he is, that is what he did. We kept thinking or

:57:35.:57:38.

I did that Murray would come back, he would find way and we kept

:57:39.:57:42.

thinking there would be dip in the the Italian games. We thought,

:57:43.:57:46.

Fognini his form would fluctuate. But he was brilliant. I mentioned is

:57:47.:57:51.

on the final point, his strength of hitting, his power of hitting but

:57:52.:57:55.

the speed round the court is extraordinary. And it demoralises

:57:56.:58:00.

you as a player when everything that you do is coming back with interest.

:58:01.:58:04.

You don't know how the beat the guy. There was time whence we saw Andy

:58:05.:58:08.

shaking his head and looking like he didn't know how to answer this.

:58:09.:58:14.

The drop shot was a key weapon of Fognini in the match. He was placing

:58:15.:58:19.

it on the six pence. When you think about it Murray is one of the

:58:20.:58:23.

fastest players out there and I don't think how many -- I don't know

:58:24.:58:27.

how many winners he hit but he probably one nine or ten out of 12,

:58:28.:58:31.

something like that. They were from tough positions and Murray barely

:58:32.:58:36.

got to them. If he did he was in an impossible situation. When Murray

:58:37.:58:40.

did the drop shot and he has a great one. Fognini won almost every point.

:58:41.:58:45.

He is so fast he not only got to them he put them way. We have a

:58:46.:58:51.

point here, Murray was giving it his all. Despite that Fognini came up

:58:52.:58:55.

with something that was spell binding. How do you play a shot like

:58:56.:58:58.

this? This is one of the best shots I've

:58:59.:59:10.

ever seen. That was a great forehand. I've never seen a drop

:59:11.:59:14.

shot the way he got that one was just beyond belief. I think the

:59:15.:59:23.

point is worth making is that there was a time when Novak Djokovic who

:59:24.:59:26.

was a bit of a joker and somebody who might never make it to the top.

:59:27.:59:29.

A couple of years ago, Fognini was one of those players, in the 30s and

:59:30.:59:35.

40s who said, yes, he's always laughing. This is the shot. I'm

:59:36.:59:41.

sorry, that shot is almost impossible, and Murray did all the

:59:42.:59:46.

right things. Ticket winner from that position, it's impossible,

:59:47.:59:51.

basically! Anyway, Fognini, ranked 35, 40 couple of years ago, always

:59:52.:59:58.

laughing and joking, enthusiastic, he is smiling, he sometimes goes off

:59:59.:00:01.

his right and also order of things. Suddenly, are we seeing the

:00:02.:00:05.

emergence of somebody beyond that to somebody who could be a contender,

:00:06.:00:10.

when it comes to the French Open, certainly? At some point, you

:00:11.:00:14.

realise, you mature, you've got the ability you can beat very good

:00:15.:00:19.

players, not on a regular basis, but you can see that, and you think,

:00:20.:00:23.

maybe it is time to invest in myself, make the effort because I

:00:24.:00:27.

can go and really do damage on this tour. I can win a Grand Slam. He has

:00:28.:00:32.

that talent. If he can put the work in as well, it wouldn't be a

:00:33.:00:38.

surprise. It would be great for tennis. I love watching him, to be

:00:39.:00:44.

honest. He is a showman, you never know what he's going to do, half the

:00:45.:00:50.

time he doesn't. Nastase, he won two Grand Slams, but he should of won

:00:51.:00:54.

another five or six but he would lose his rag. He was so great to

:00:55.:00:58.

watch that you think, what entertainment! This play is the same

:00:59.:01:03.

thing and if he can get a little bit stronger mentally, he will win some

:01:04.:01:06.

big matches. We will all be entertained. If we wind the clock

:01:07.:01:13.

back 2.5 hours ago, when we were saying we expected Murray to win,

:01:14.:01:16.

Jonathan make the point repeatedly that Andy Murray's record isn't

:01:17.:01:22.

great on clay. What has Andy got to do to suddenly make the next step as

:01:23.:01:28.

far as being a clay-court player is concerned? It's going to be tough.

:01:29.:01:34.

The way he plays, he plays flat strokes. He doesn't have heavy

:01:35.:01:39.

shots. On clay, that is tough, which is why he's so good on the hard

:01:40.:01:43.

court and grass court. But we can't take too much out of this one

:01:44.:01:47.

because he hasn't done this training block required to get the strength

:01:48.:01:51.

in the legs that is needed. I don't know. That is a good question. He is

:01:52.:01:57.

going to have to play against Fognini, natural is on this surface.

:01:58.:02:02.

We were shell-shocked by the margin. We will all sane, it might be four

:02:03.:02:09.

sets, five, but we didn't think it would be straight sets. Nobody

:02:10.:02:15.

expected it to be straight sets to Fognini. Although we thought maybe

:02:16.:02:22.

Murray might have won in straight sets. Get in touch with us. A lot of

:02:23.:02:28.

people saying if Murray hadn't played the doubles yesterday,

:02:29.:02:32.

Hutchins and Fleming would have won anyway, and Fognini would have won

:02:33.:02:39.

today anyway. I would like to discuss that. To play to Davis Cup

:02:40.:02:44.

matches, you look at the hour he was on court for the singles, the mental

:02:45.:02:51.

strength of the night before and then winning that match purely

:02:52.:02:54.

focusing on that, and mentally having to get up later for a big

:02:55.:02:59.

doubles match, that is training. I think his serve was poor today. And

:03:00.:03:07.

a lot of that was down to tiredness. That is all going to have

:03:08.:03:11.

ramifications in later days. It's not going to be easy to stay

:03:12.:03:12.

strong, as you would normally. If you've just switched on and you

:03:13.:03:20.

missed Andy Murray's attempt to take Britain into the semifinals for the

:03:21.:03:26.

first time in 30 years, here is the point at which Murray lost. In the

:03:27.:03:33.

end, it was a tame finish to the game.

:03:34.:03:42.

Fognini cupping his ear, saying, let me hear you. And the crowd letting

:03:43.:04:02.

him bat-mac -- hear it. You could hear that every time anyone made a

:04:03.:04:06.

mistake, there was a lot of roaring, which you don't see all the

:04:07.:04:11.

time on the tour, because there was something special about this Davis

:04:12.:04:16.

Cup match. So, this is how it stands on a Sunday afternoon.

:04:17.:04:21.

The Czech Republic, the defending champions, are through to play

:04:22.:04:28.

France or Germany. France are trying to be the eighth country ever to

:04:29.:04:35.

come back from 2-0 down to win to progress. 2-1 down because they won

:04:36.:04:40.

the doubles and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has won the first set against Kamke

:04:41.:04:54.

of Germany. It is 2-2 with Italy, and Switzerland against Kazakhstan.

:04:55.:04:57.

At the most unlikely of all results, Kazakhstan, 2-1 up after

:04:58.:05:03.

their doubles victory over Wawrinka and Federer. Wawrinka is playing the

:05:04.:05:08.

first singles for the Swiss at the moment and he is 5-4 up against

:05:09.:05:15.

Kukushkin of Kazakhstan. I am sure there is a great atmosphere on that

:05:16.:05:20.

court in Geneva. So, loads of tennis for you, who knows how much? There

:05:21.:05:25.

is so much more sport to tell you about on the BBC over the course of

:05:26.:05:31.

the next few days. The Challenge Cup fourth-round between Huddersfield

:05:32.:05:34.

and Saint Helens is on today at 1:45pm. You must have been living in

:05:35.:05:43.

a cave if you didn't know the boat race is on today. We have the

:05:44.:05:52.

Olympic journey with David Weir at 6:30pm. Then highlights of the

:05:53.:05:56.

Bahrain Grand Prix from 10pm. Still, it keeps on coming, our sporting cup

:05:57.:06:02.

overflows with highlights of the Premier League tonight at 10:25pm.

:06:03.:06:07.

All the goals from yesterday as well. And then our triathlon review

:06:08.:06:12.

starts tomorrow. That is at 3pm. I am sure you will know that the

:06:13.:06:18.

Masters starts on Thursday but our review of the Masters starts on

:06:19.:06:22.

Tuesday at 1:50pm. So, Andy Murray, and we know his

:06:23.:06:31.

background, but there is a perception that tennis is for a

:06:32.:06:35.

certain group of people for a certain part of society but the LTA

:06:36.:06:40.

is trying to make sure tennis goes out to the widest communities. Phil

:06:41.:06:44.

Jones has been to Birmingham to see one particular initiative.

:06:45.:06:48.

With a Wimbledon champion to call its own, British tennis has got a

:06:49.:06:54.

colossal monkey off his back. The next mission is to change the

:06:55.:06:59.

perception of tennis as white and middle-class and get people from all

:07:00.:07:02.

walks of life channelling their inner Andy Murray. It is a cold and

:07:03.:07:07.

damp day in inner-city Birmingham. We are in the heart of the seat

:07:08.:07:16.

immunity. -- of the seat -- Sikh community. This man is one of the

:07:17.:07:25.

pioneering tennis activators making this plan work. I was brought up

:07:26.:07:32.

around here and I got involved and with the help of the school and the

:07:33.:07:37.

tennis foundation and the LTA, they are helping fund projects like

:07:38.:07:41.

this. It is brilliant what he's doing at this school. The key thing

:07:42.:07:45.

is that we make tennis more accessible for people. It is for

:07:46.:07:49.

anyone, of any age, of any background. Especially with certain

:07:50.:07:56.

communities, we were not getting involved as much, especially the

:07:57.:08:03.

Asian community. They go to an education background, to become a

:08:04.:08:09.

doctor, a nurse, or a pharmacist. There are 600 new tennis coaches who

:08:10.:08:13.

have been through fast-track programmes. This programme has been

:08:14.:08:19.

very successful in getting people like him involved, giving him the

:08:20.:08:24.

basic skills to give these sessions. In sped of communities -- instead of

:08:25.:08:30.

communities coming to sport, it is the sport coming to the community.

:08:31.:08:36.

The scheme is set to be rolled out nationally. The key is locking in

:08:37.:08:41.

the enthusiasm of people and turning wide-eyed wonder into a passion for

:08:42.:08:47.

tennis. You get to learn and play at the same time. The best thing is to

:08:48.:08:53.

win matches together. I already know lots about football so I thought I

:08:54.:08:57.

might learn tennis and become better. We need more people like Bal

:08:58.:09:05.

doing such a good thing with the community. The whole emphasis is on

:09:06.:09:12.

fun. This is why I am doing this and it makes me want to do things like

:09:13.:09:18.

this, keep setting up different projects because, at the end of the

:09:19.:09:22.

day, if they are not smiling, I am not smiling.

:09:23.:09:26.

So, get inspired. There is the website. Even if it is not a

:09:27.:09:34.

glorious day, get out to your local tennis club and get involved because

:09:35.:09:38.

the summer is coming, and, who knows, you could be playing a Davis

:09:39.:09:43.

Cup tie. That is what Andy Murray or Judy Murray would have thought with

:09:44.:09:45.

her young boys all those years ago. Talking about Judy Murray, she has

:09:46.:09:54.

been at Andy's hotel in Scotland. It has been a busy week for the family.

:09:55.:10:02.

It is tennis a sport, John, that you don't play at at eight, nine or ten,

:10:03.:10:09.

is it too late, or can you do it later? You can. Tennis is not an

:10:10.:10:16.

easy game to learn. The thing when you play with the soft tennis

:10:17.:10:19.

balls, I don't know what they call that, the soft tennis, I think it is

:10:20.:10:26.

a tough sport and you have to get lessons, and it is tough for people

:10:27.:10:31.

to take it up later. They swing in the park, they whack a few balls,

:10:32.:10:36.

they pick the ball is out of the fence. You have to get more coaches

:10:37.:10:40.

involved, and get lessons going so they learn the basics. But it is a

:10:41.:10:45.

game for life so we have to promote it as a game for life. How many can

:10:46.:10:50.

you play for life? Golf, swimming perhaps. In golf, you are mostly in

:10:51.:11:00.

the golf cart! Curling! But you don't really get the heart rate up.

:11:01.:11:06.

But the point is well made. The other thing, I personally feel that

:11:07.:11:11.

indoor facilities are paramount in Britain. Whatever the weather is

:11:12.:11:17.

outside today, you are less likely to go out if the weather is

:11:18.:11:22.

miserable than if it isn't. It is a truism, isn't it? And you have to

:11:23.:11:28.

make it less expensive but you have to pay for heating and lights. Now,

:11:29.:11:35.

to James Ward. A couple of weeks ago, against Sam Querrey, James Ward

:11:36.:11:39.

had arguably his finest victory of his career so far. It was this wind

:11:40.:11:44.

that took Britain into the position we're in now which giving James Ward

:11:45.:11:49.

a chance to get Britain into our first semifinals of the Davis Cup

:11:50.:11:55.

for 33 years. That was his reaction at his extraordinary victory. It was

:11:56.:11:58.

extraordinary thinking about what Sam Querrey has done over the years.

:11:59.:12:03.

That was a monumental moment for James Ward, he can do it on the

:12:04.:12:10.

biggest stage. How much more of a challenge is today? A lot more. Sam

:12:11.:12:15.

Querrey isn't a clay-court specialist. Seppi is. This is a

:12:16.:12:22.

ferocious crowd. This will be without question the biggest test of

:12:23.:12:26.

his career. We talk about getting off to a good start but I would

:12:27.:12:31.

guess this is paramount. If James Ward gets down here and loses the

:12:32.:12:35.

first set, he has got a mountain to climb. It is going to be a snowball

:12:36.:12:41.

effect with the snowball gathering momentum. You don't want that to get

:12:42.:12:46.

bigger. If you can stop the rot, keep the crowd out of it, Seppi will

:12:47.:12:50.

start doubting, he has a lot of pressure on him, he has a lot of

:12:51.:12:55.

expectation on him. He is the overwhelming favourite. He has a

:12:56.:13:01.

reputation of being a choker in matches and this is a big match. The

:13:02.:13:09.

crowd expect him to win, they have never heard of James Ward before, he

:13:10.:13:13.

is the overwhelming favourite. If James Ward can win the set, we've

:13:14.:13:19.

got a match on our hands. If he loses, it's a struggle. As the match

:13:20.:13:23.

was slipping away from Andy, would the Davis Cup captain have a -- the

:13:24.:13:35.

option to change players? I think James Ward deserved to play this

:13:36.:13:40.

match. He is an experienced Davis Cup they are. He has played a lot of

:13:41.:13:46.

matches. And I think he will relish this occasion. I just think that the

:13:47.:13:55.

ability of Seppi is great. He is a better player. I think this first

:13:56.:13:59.

set is critical and I hope he hasn't been damaged too much by Andy

:14:00.:14:02.

getting thumped in three straight sets, which no one was expecting. A

:14:03.:14:12.

lot of people in the crowd will not know about James Ward. You might not

:14:13.:14:18.

know about him watching at home. 161 in the world, but this is a

:14:19.:14:21.

phenomenal opportunity for him to catapult himself into the national

:14:22.:14:26.

sporting consciousness. How much in a situation like this is it about

:14:27.:14:29.

self belief? How much does he have to say to himself, I know I am a

:14:30.:14:33.

good player and I've got to seize the moment?

:14:34.:14:36.

He has a lot of self belief, and the winds again Tursunov and others, he

:14:37.:14:48.

knows he can win. He has to win one time and the pressure is on my

:14:49.:14:51.

opponent, so let's go out there and do what I know I can do. Big

:14:52.:14:59.

serving? Big serving and big hitting. When it comes to firepower

:15:00.:15:04.

and attacking prowess, he has the type of game Andy does. Andy is much

:15:05.:15:08.

better defensively, but if you can be on the front foot more, he

:15:09.:15:12.

doesn't have to defend so much. He's got to get onto the front foot. They

:15:13.:15:16.

say in the game these days you have to have big weapons and he has a

:15:17.:15:21.

very good backhand and big serve. His forehand isn't bad. His mobility

:15:22.:15:26.

is suspect. But he has to start getting in charge of the points. He

:15:27.:15:31.

has to get on top of them otherwise it will be a short night. We can see

:15:32.:15:40.

how close he was against Fognini in the first match. That will all be

:15:41.:15:45.

stuff that Leon Smith will be pumping into him saying, look what

:15:46.:15:50.

you did to the guy who demolished Andy Murray. 70-30? I've still got

:15:51.:16:02.

to say 70-30. I think it is going to be close. I think Seppi will edge it

:16:03.:16:10.

out, but I hope I am wrong. We think it is going to be a great fight from

:16:11.:16:14.

James Ward. Because it has been a tremendous tide, looking at it, we

:16:15.:16:19.

have had four falling from different matches, and it all comes down to

:16:20.:16:25.

this. The last throw of the dice for Great Britain and Italy, and a large

:16:26.:16:32.

throw of the dice for James Ward. So, interesting, your comments or

:16:33.:16:37.

extensive during the Murray game. An overwhelming feeling for -- from

:16:38.:16:43.

those watching that if Murray hadn't played the doubles today, he would

:16:44.:16:48.

have been in better shape today. We are where we are, that is

:16:49.:16:53.

immaterial. But if you have any thoughts of what might happen over

:16:54.:16:56.

the next couple of hours, get in touch with us. You have plenty of

:16:57.:17:01.

other sporting options to watch this afternoon, other lifestyle options,

:17:02.:17:05.

too, so if you cannot stay with us on BBC One, you've always got BBC

:17:06.:17:12.

Radio Five Live, you've got the BBC sports app and the website. This is

:17:13.:17:21.

a fantastic looking arena on the Bay of Naples. How much do you wish you

:17:22.:17:26.

were there cheering James Ward on on this glorious Sunday afternoon?

:17:27.:17:33.

Anyway, let's go to our commentators.

:17:34.:17:38.

This is a great angle we are getting. Jealousy for everyone

:17:39.:17:45.

watching, I am sure! These guys are there, and they have offered

:17:46.:17:48.

terrific support for Great Britain across the weekend and the team

:17:49.:17:56.

needs them more than ever. I can completely understand the point of

:17:57.:17:58.

view of those arguing that Murray should have been arrested. But look

:17:59.:18:03.

at it this way. -- should have been rested. Fognini was great.

:18:04.:18:10.

Yesterday, playing Murray gave Britain the best chance of winning

:18:11.:18:15.

that match. So, had Fleming and Hutchins lost, Murray could easily

:18:16.:18:20.

have lost today the way Fognini played, and then it would be over,

:18:21.:18:24.

done and dusted, pack your bags, watch the Rugby League. But Britain

:18:25.:18:33.

still has a chance right now. The fifth and final rubber of the tie.

:18:34.:18:39.

Who will go through? Italy or Great Britain? Well, on the last two

:18:40.:18:43.

occasions, Britain has been involved in tyres which have gone is the full

:18:44.:18:47.

distance and they have won thanks to James Ward and Dan Evans. In

:18:48.:18:56.

Coventry against Russia. And against the Slovak Republic as well in

:18:57.:19:02.

Glasgow. James Ward did not win on the final day. Evans did. Evans will

:19:03.:19:13.

be watching from the sidelines. This time, James Ward attempts to bring

:19:14.:19:20.

it home. Important factor and figures for you. James Ward is down

:19:21.:19:27.

at 161 in the world rankings. -- important facts and figures. This is

:19:28.:19:34.

a mystery for all of us who have seen him play so well in his career.

:19:35.:19:40.

He is from London, he is an Arsenal fan, who have just kicked off

:19:41.:19:46.

against Everton. As for Andreas Seppi, he is 30 now, 44 in the

:19:47.:19:52.

world, a career high-ranking of 18, just over a year ago. He is finished

:19:53.:19:56.

the last two seasons inside the top 25, so a much higher level of

:19:57.:20:01.

competitive play than his opponent today. Four wins on the tour from 12

:20:02.:20:11.

matches. Has come up against some tough opponents. David Ferrer in

:20:12.:20:15.

Miami, Wawrinka in India well. He lost to Murray on day one. It was

:20:16.:20:35.

tighter, though, than the scoreline suggested. He troubled Murray.

:20:36.:21:03.

Carlos Ramos is the umpire for this one.

:21:04.:21:21.

Interesting start. Maybe it is a sign of how Seppi is feeling right

:21:22.:21:28.

now. He didn't move his feet well, James

:21:29.:25:01.

Ward. That was a lazy looking shot. The first thing that goes when you

:25:02.:25:05.

are nervous is your feet. You've got to tell yourself to move your feet.

:25:06.:25:10.

It sounds obvious, but that is what happens when you get tight.

:25:11.:25:30.

That was a great backhand. Just struck on the line. He needed that

:25:31.:25:38.

one badly. It was going to be 0-40. A good dipping passing shot, James

:25:39.:26:25.

Ward. So tough to volley that one up.

:26:26.:26:48.

The danger for James Ward is that his opponent might be too solid.

:26:49.:27:02.

When you are way down the rankings like years, you don't have as much

:27:03.:27:08.

competitive experience at this level, playing this type of player.

:27:09.:27:11.

And that is the key. It is an early break. The comeback

:27:12.:27:32.

in the tie is well and truly on. It was shaping up to be a good return,

:27:33.:27:37.

but James Ward is not quick on his feet to get up to the ball.

:27:38.:28:27.

What a shot that was! I don't think Seppi thought that at ten three had

:28:28.:28:35.

a chance to get that back! You should have covered that. That was

:28:36.:28:40.

the only place that Ward could have got to.

:28:41.:29:11.

He is having to dig in, scramble, outmanoeuvre his man. He can find

:29:12.:29:24.

his armoury. Anything can happen from Britain. But it is not going to

:29:25.:29:26.

happen easily. That is a very good response s

:29:27.:31:03.

really good from Ward. Because at times, he will have to do

:31:04.:31:08.

some spectacular stuff if he is to which the match. There demonstrating

:31:09.:31:11.

he can do the basic stuff and down there, toe to toe and win those

:31:12.:31:16.

rallies. It was a good effort to come back, he loses the early break,

:31:17.:31:20.

he looked tight in the first two games, to come back and break serve

:31:21.:31:26.

straight away and stop his opponent going to a 3-0 lead, that was big. A

:31:27.:31:30.

couple of rallies where he was not afraid to go toe to toe, and looked

:31:31.:31:36.

solid. He has to keep the, sort of head in these rally, because the

:31:37.:31:42.

movement wise, Seppi is a lot quicker round the court, and once

:31:43.:31:47.

James Ward gets a move too much at the angle, he is going to be in a

:31:48.:31:55.

bit of trouble. A good game there. Because Seppi has spent a lot of his

:31:56.:32:00.

career being the number one ranked Italian in Davis Cup. It has only

:32:01.:32:04.

been the last few years Fognini has got to where he is in the world. He

:32:05.:32:09.

doesn't have much experience of playing deciding rubbers, Seppi and

:32:10.:32:13.

his crept record not that great. Overall he has lost as many matches

:32:14.:32:20.

in Davis Cup than he has won. -- recent. Lost in Argentina,

:32:21.:32:28.

earlier in the year. Defeat to Raonic last year and

:32:29.:32:37.

Cilic. A man who has struggled to win

:32:38.:32:41.

really big matches for his country in this competition.

:32:42.:32:46.

That being said, those three names are pretty tough opponents. They are

:32:47.:32:49.

good players. Absolutely. I think the only time he has played

:32:50.:33:17.

a live fifth deciding rubber was way back ten years ago. He beat Georgia

:33:18.:33:20.

3-2. That is one of the points that is

:33:21.:34:56.

too good. Ward did well, got himself out a couple of tough positions on

:34:57.:35:00.

the court. Seppi does hit the ball early, he

:35:01.:35:06.

hits on the rise, especially on that backhand side, he is dangerous.

:35:07.:35:17.

It is interesting to see how much he uses the tactics that we noticed

:35:18.:35:22.

that Andy Murray used against Seppi, the slice to get the ball low on

:35:23.:35:26.

Seppi's forehand, we saw it already once in this match, but he hasn't

:35:27.:35:31.

used it yet since then. James Ward is not known as the craft

:35:32.:35:37.

player, he is more of a big hitter. It was so effective, that perhaps he

:35:38.:35:45.

could throw that one in, to mix them up a little bit apse... And keep

:35:46.:36:01.

Seppi off balance. A couple of free points on his serve.

:36:02.:36:14.

The match has come down to a fifth. Highlights of Leon Smith's bold

:36:15.:36:23.

decision to go with Ward again, rewarding him for his victory in

:36:24.:36:27.

America. His rival Dan Evans watching on.

:36:28.:36:36.

Vanes of course a man who -- Evans of course who has won this sort of

:36:37.:36:40.

match, not this sort of match because this is quarter-final, won a

:36:41.:36:44.

live fifth match for Britain. He would have loved to have played,

:36:45.:36:48.

I am sure. Still think it is the right choice?

:36:49.:36:52.

Yes, I think it is. If it had been on a different surface it might be

:36:53.:36:58.

more of a close thing. I think on clay...

:36:59.:37:03.

Evans has not hat a great record on clay and Ward likes clay. -- had.

:37:04.:37:24.

Special Andy Flower his result against Sam query, it is tough to

:37:25.:37:33.

rule him out. -- especially after.

:37:34.:38:52.

Holds for 3-2. Break of serve. Winners through to

:38:53.:39:04.

play either Switzerland or Kazakhstan in the last four of the

:39:05.:39:07.

competition and what a weekend it has been in Geneva, Kazakhstan

:39:08.:39:12.

surprisingly winning against Wawrinka on day one, and then the

:39:13.:39:19.

doubles and how about this, Wawrinka is getting beat 1-0 in rubber four.

:39:20.:39:24.

Trying to seal the day away from home against the Australian Open

:39:25.:39:27.

champion. Keep you in touch with that. These are the scenes in Naples

:39:28.:39:35.

today. Seppi and Ward both getting the instruction from their

:39:36.:39:39.

respective captains. The British fans hoping that this is going to be

:39:40.:39:43.

a fairly tail end to their weekend by the sea.

:39:44.:39:48.

Certainly the locals are the ones feeling more confident at the

:39:49.:39:53.

moment. That would be some upset if

:39:54.:39:57.

Kazakhstan could complete the trick I have in Switzerland. That would

:39:58.:40:01.

be, that was a foregone conclusion, that the Swiss were going to win

:40:02.:40:05.

that match. I mean, if they win that one, that is one of the biggest

:40:06.:40:13.

upsets probably ever. Wawrinka number three in the world.

:40:14.:40:19.

Federer number four. Away from home. As a doubled team nay won the gold

:40:20.:40:23.

medal. Exactly. It is unbelievable they could lose that match. . It is

:40:24.:40:25.

not over yet, but still... Nice to be able to have Roger

:40:26.:40:37.

Federer to come in and play your fifth and deciding rubber if it

:40:38.:40:43.

comes to that, that might be leaving Steven Gerrard to be your fifth

:40:44.:40:54.

penalty taker and not being needed. Tsonga is looking good in his match

:40:55.:40:59.

for frans against Germany. Trying to level the tie. Two sets and a break

:41:00.:41:04.

Tsonga leads against Kamke. -- France.

:41:05.:41:15.

Lovely backhand. A little risky, but great execution on the left. He has

:41:16.:41:22.

a very good handed backhand, he can do a lot who -- a lot with it.

:41:23.:43:09.

That was one fortunate there. He picked the wrong option.

:43:10.:43:19.

Seppi there, he faked it where he was going to go and held his ground

:43:20.:43:24.

and stayed where he was and Ward played right to him.

:43:25.:44:30.

Let us see if James Ward can respond as quickly as the last time he was

:44:31.:44:35.

broken. That is an excellent 1-2 punch from

:44:36.:46:20.

the Italian. Really moved up to it quickly. He

:46:21.:46:25.

knows the return was going to come short. He gives his opponent less

:46:26.:46:29.

time to cover the rest of the court and execute the forehand

:46:30.:46:30.

beautifully. Oh, that's another one for Britain!

:46:31.:47:53.

He will need a few more of those today, I am sure.

:47:54.:48:01.

There is nothing that Andreas Seppi wants more than a nice stress free

:48:02.:48:05.

couple of hours. Up toward to make this tight. To heap the pressure on.

:48:06.:48:13.

-- stress-free. That is so good. Clay Court Ten

:48:14.:48:31.

necessary there at its finest. I think he sees, as soon as he has

:48:32.:48:36.

James Ward on the run, James Ward will back off to cover as much court

:48:37.:48:41.

as he can. He has to compensate for having less speed round the court,

:48:42.:48:45.

and as soon as he does that, he puts in a drop shot and James Ward

:48:46.:49:33.

doesn't, he can't react to that. Soon as he does that, he puts in a

:49:34.:49:36.

drop shot and James Ward doesn't, he can't react to that.

:49:37.:49:38.

As Spot good hitting there. Good striking of the ball.

:49:39.:49:42.

He seemed to increase the tempo there and the point well along. He

:49:43.:49:46.

got more confident. Increased it. Just squeezed and squeezed a bit

:49:47.:49:50.

more and got the area he was looking for.

:49:51.:50:28.

Excellent recovery from Ward in this game.

:50:29.:50:52.

Second time in the set, Italy have broken. Britain have hit straight

:50:53.:51:02.

back. Great mental fort #250ud, that takes

:51:03.:51:06.

a lot of focus and Den determination to keep bouncing back.

:51:07.:51:13.

It's a big let off. An easy volley. I don't know what he did. He must

:51:14.:51:16.

have taken the eye off the ball. That is what he said. That is

:51:17.:51:21.

probably what he was is talking about. The captain will be say

:51:22.:51:28.

saying you should have done it. Credit to James Ward he stayed after

:51:29.:51:34.

that point, and twice he has been down break, he knows now, against

:51:35.:51:38.

Seppi if he does go down, Seppi is not a great holder of his serve, he

:51:39.:51:42.

can certainly break back at any time. And he is back in the match

:51:43.:51:48.

again. A big match. Not just for the man

:51:49.:51:53.

sitting down but also for the man standing up. Leon myth, the young

:51:54.:52:00.

British captain, with an excellent recent record in Davis Cup. Just the

:52:01.:52:07.

one refeet. Eight victories to his name. It is times like this, there

:52:08.:52:11.

is only so much you can do when you are chatting away to Andy Murray,

:52:12.:52:14.

one of the best players in the world, times like this a much lower

:52:15.:52:20.

ranked player, when a captain has to earn his corn.

:52:21.:52:40.

Four breaks of serve in the seven games so far. Ward severing now at

:52:41.:52:48.

4--- 3-4. First set. That was awe surprise there from

:52:49.:52:55.

Seppi, for hand down. -- that was a surprise there from

:52:56.:53:20.

Seppi, forehand down. Nice sever from Ward. He could never

:53:21.:55:59.

have expected to return from that. Terrific return. Seppi ahead. This

:56:00.:56:06.

is a squash court forehand return. That is the way to improvise on a

:56:07.:56:11.

shot. That was a fantastic return. There is the very very happy victor

:56:12.:56:17.

of the previous match, who put on a magnificent performance today.

:56:18.:56:26.

Fabio Fognini. What an execution of clay court tennis he put on today,

:56:27.:56:28.

against Andy Murray. We will hear from Andy Murray at the

:56:29.:57:44.

end of this set S it will be interesting to hear from him.

:57:45.:58:12.

He wasn't quite in the right position. He wanted to hit a very

:58:13.:58:18.

good shot from it. The better guys that are moving like Fabio and Andy,

:58:19.:58:22.

when they are out of position they put in a nice high floater, give

:58:23.:58:26.

them a chance to get back in to position. But there, just one snatch

:58:27.:58:30.

at it and that is why he missed the ball.

:58:31.:59:09.

Oh dear. Dear, dear, dear. He might be in the lead but he is far from

:59:10.:59:17.

settled. He does get tight. This was a tight looking overhead. Manoeuvred

:59:18.:59:23.

himself perfectly, and see he stopped moving his feet there and

:59:24.:59:27.

got stationery too soon and was off balance on the overhead. Didn't get

:59:28.:59:32.

behind the ball and attack it. Go after it.

:59:33.:59:52.

That service... That was the middle of the service box. I know it

:59:53.:59:57.

clipped the net but there was no pace on it. You can see he is tied.

:59:58.:00:02.

That is why James has to come in and put pressure on even more.

:00:03.:00:09.

Very good. If he is this tied serving for the first said, imagine

:00:10.:00:19.

what he is like if it goes wrong. Oh, we don't need this. I wonder if

:00:20.:00:28.

he can get the break before they stop. You can play through drizzle

:00:29.:00:31.

on clay courts, no problem. What a dreadful service game from

:00:32.:00:59.

the Italian. Huge bonus for Britain, if there is an interruption. Let's

:01:00.:01:03.

be honest, how many good service games have we seen? That is just

:01:04.:01:09.

nerves, right there. Once again, just showing you what it is like to

:01:10.:01:13.

try and close out a fifth Davis Cup rubber, especially when you are an

:01:14.:01:18.

overwhelming favourite. It looks like it is starting to come down a

:01:19.:01:24.

bit here. It was forecast this morning. Fingers crossed it is not

:01:25.:01:32.

going to be hard enough to force everyone off court. The Thai referee

:01:33.:01:41.

has just put his jacket on, which isn't the greatest sign in the

:01:42.:01:50.

world. -- the tie referee. So the last four games have gone against

:01:51.:01:52.

the Serb, and six of the last eight. And even though Ward is suffering as

:01:53.:02:08.

much as Seppi on serve, it has to be good news generally, doesn't it, for

:02:09.:02:13.

Britain? If Seppi is getting this tight in the first set and Ward can

:02:14.:02:16.

hang with him, there will be chances. I think if Ward gets into

:02:17.:02:23.

his rhythm, it should be able -- easier for him to hold his serve

:02:24.:02:29.

than Seppi, he has the bigger backhand and forehand. But he hasn't

:02:30.:02:33.

found that stride yet, neither has Seppi. It would be good if he could

:02:34.:02:38.

get a cold here and put the pressure on. I don't think it is going to

:02:39.:02:43.

happen, the rain is getting heavier. Carlos Ramos has come onto the court

:02:44.:02:47.

and I think everyone is in agreement that the players should sit down and

:02:48.:02:54.

take a break. Often when the players sit down on their chairs in

:02:55.:02:56.

situations like this, sit down on their chairs in

:02:57.:03:17.

anything back in the hands of the grand stuff, do we? In terms of the

:03:18.:03:22.

covers! Otherwise we will be back tomorrow -- the ground staff. Going

:03:23.:03:29.

on what they did on day one. Ward has a very important service

:03:30.:03:41.

game to come. After all those breaks, it is 5-4 Seppi.

:03:42.:03:49.

JOHN INVERDALE: Effectively, it is on serve, to all intents and

:03:50.:03:51.

purposes, which means the matches evenly poised. Everyone is bailing

:03:52.:03:56.

out because of the weather. As things stand, it is all square as

:03:57.:04:01.

far as the matches are concerned at 2-2, following Fabio Fognini's

:04:02.:04:06.

emphatic victory over Andy Murray this morning, and that does mean

:04:07.:04:10.

that everything, in terms of Great Britain's Davis Cup ambitions, rests

:04:11.:04:14.

on the outcome of this James Ward and Andreas Seppi match. Not

:04:15.:04:17.

surprisingly, Andy Murray was pretty downbeat after his defeat earlier

:04:18.:04:18.

on. I know that will be a tough loss for

:04:19.:04:21.

you, but you did run then, I know that will be a tough loss for

:04:22.:04:30.

you, but I I'm sure you would agree, to an inspired opponent. He played

:04:31.:04:33.

some great stuff at important periods of the match and that was

:04:34.:04:39.

the main difference, really. When I had my opportunities, I was a little

:04:40.:04:41.

bit disappointed in myself and when had my opportunities, I was a little

:04:42.:04:45.

bit disappointed he had his, he was exceptional, so credit to him. You

:04:46.:04:50.

have played a lot of tennis, in the space of 26, 27 hours, you had a

:04:51.:04:54.

virus earlier in the week. Did you feel more tired than you would

:04:55.:04:59.

expect to at this stage? I was tired when I got up, but I felt OK when I

:05:00.:05:03.

got out there. It is hard in that kind of atmosphere -- not hard in

:05:04.:05:07.

that kind of atmosphere to get yourself up for the match. I did OK

:05:08.:05:11.

physically in the match, I have definitely felt worse in tennis

:05:12.:05:15.

matches on clay and I have played a lot on this surface over the last

:05:16.:05:18.

couple of years, and struggled with my back, but today was OK. Tell us

:05:19.:05:23.

about that atmosphere. Where you are unhappy at times with the way people

:05:24.:05:27.

in the crowd were calling out and a little bit of chat coming from the

:05:28.:05:30.

Italian captain as you were serving? The atmosphere was a Davis Cup

:05:31.:05:36.

atmosphere. We don't get that on a day-to-day basis on the ATP Tour,

:05:37.:05:41.

but when you play away from home and come to these sorts of places, you

:05:42.:05:48.

expect that. But, yeah, I just asked one time for the captain not to

:05:49.:05:51.

speak while I am serving, because he's right there on the court.

:05:52.:05:59.

That's not a major issue at all. So it was fine. And finally, it is not

:06:00.:06:03.

over yet. James Ward has shown what he can do in Davis Cup situations

:06:04.:06:08.

before. Yeah, he played a great match on Friday, and he has played

:06:09.:06:14.

probably his best tennis in the Davis Cup over the course of his

:06:15.:06:19.

career, so I'm sure it'll be another great match and there is a lot of

:06:20.:06:22.

pressure on Seppi to perform, hopefully James will use that to his

:06:23.:06:26.

advantage. That was Murray speaking earlier on. And I think the players

:06:27.:06:31.

have now left the court, there goes James Ward, and it seems that the

:06:32.:06:38.

6,000 crowd have all vacated the arena for various outlets selling

:06:39.:06:50.

peanut pinot grigio and various things. Seppi is still on court, but

:06:51.:06:55.

I imagine it is only a matter of time before he follows James Ward.

:06:56.:06:59.

It is impossible to know how long the delay will be but the only thing

:07:00.:07:03.

to say, from a positive point of view, that because it is a clay

:07:04.:07:06.

court, and they haven't covered it yet, the conditions will not impact

:07:07.:07:11.

on that kind of surface as they would do at Wimbledon court without

:07:12.:07:15.

a roof or a hard court, where the surface can become slippery very

:07:16.:07:19.

quickly. There goes Seppi. So both players are now off court and I

:07:20.:07:24.

suspect it could be ten or 15 minutes or so. Who is to say? Very

:07:25.:07:28.

conflicting weather forecasts we have had. One this morning said it

:07:29.:07:32.

would be glorious and the other said there might be showers. The one that

:07:33.:07:35.

said there might be showers was clearly a little bit more accurate.

:07:36.:07:39.

Confirmation of how the quarterfinals of this Davis Cup

:07:40.:07:43.

currently stand. The Czech Republic won yesterday, taking an

:07:44.:07:48.

unassailable 3-0 lead against Japan. So they played two dead rubbers

:07:49.:07:52.

today in the game and the Czech Republic are through, the defending

:07:53.:07:56.

champions. They will play the winner of France against Germany. Germany

:07:57.:07:59.

were 2-0 up in the opening singles but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has just won

:08:00.:08:04.

in the fourth rubber of that match, so they have a deciding match in

:08:05.:08:10.

Nancy. Italy and Great Britain, you know, is 2-2. And the winner of this

:08:11.:08:15.

match, whoever it might be, will play the winner of Kazakhstan

:08:16.:08:18.

against Switzerland. We mentioned this a few times yesterday, but

:08:19.:08:23.

Kazakhstan had beaten Wawrinka and Federer in the doubles, which was a

:08:24.:08:27.

real upset. Wawrinka is playing Kukushkin in the first of the

:08:28.:08:31.

reverse singles and Wawrinka lost the first set, but just levelled it

:08:32.:08:39.

at 1-1, I'm hearing. So that match is very much teetering and I am sure

:08:40.:08:42.

there is a great buzz in the indoor arena in Geneva. But the point we

:08:43.:08:47.

made repeatedly is that this is the only one of the 4/4-finals that are

:08:48.:08:50.

taking place outdoors, and it was a brave move by the Italians --

:08:51.:08:56.

quarterfinals. They could have faded further north but they too could

:08:57.:09:01.

serve because of the guarantee of better weather --played it. Some of

:09:02.:09:05.

those aerial shots are magnificent, nestling into the Bay of Naples with

:09:06.:09:10.

the Isle of Capri out at sea, but we have rather been undone by the

:09:11.:09:13.

weather, which kibosh to things on Friday for Andy Murray and provided

:09:14.:09:16.

the major interruption at the moment. John Lloyd, we will talk

:09:17.:09:22.

about the state of play generally, but also reflect on Andy Murray's

:09:23.:09:26.

match this morning. He played well to start off with. He went after him

:09:27.:09:30.

right at the beginning and was very aggressive, taking the ball early

:09:31.:09:34.

and putting pressure on Fognini's server and it worked for about four

:09:35.:09:38.

games, but Fognini just kept hanging in there.

:09:39.:09:40.

server and it worked for about four games, but Fognini just kept His

:09:41.:09:42.

movement was so good and his variety started coming about and you could

:09:43.:09:48.

see why Fognini is such a good clay-court player. His footwork

:09:49.:09:53.

around the court, Murray was trying these punishing ground strokes side

:09:54.:09:57.

to side but he just sort of bands over and slides into the ball, then

:09:58.:10:02.

comes up with a drop shot. Some of the points were magnificent. This

:10:03.:10:07.

rally was 29 or 30 shots, the quality of the tennis, you look at

:10:08.:10:13.

the score at the end, a loss of ten games, but it wasn't that kind of

:10:14.:10:17.

match. The quality of the tennis, the hitting, was exceptional. That

:10:18.:10:22.

was a great winner from Andy Murray, but actually, the outstanding shots,

:10:23.:10:25.

numerically, were coming from Fognini more than Murray, and I

:10:26.:10:30.

think perhaps in advance, you know, we were talking about would we need

:10:31.:10:33.

to show the deciding rubber, would there be a dead rubber? Would award

:10:34.:10:39.

and Seppi just shake hands and say, we won't bother playing at --ward.

:10:40.:10:43.

We were kind of overlooking what an outstanding player on clay Fognini

:10:44.:10:50.

is, you don't become number 13 in the world and be a pushover in the

:10:51.:10:54.

Davis Cup tie and some of the tennis he played was magnificent. Well, his

:10:55.:10:59.

record is superb. We didn't think this would be a pushover, obviously,

:11:00.:11:03.

but I just felt the way that Murray has played, with the two grand slam

:11:04.:11:07.

titles and, he has looked so good, and Fognini hasn't played well,

:11:08.:11:15.

apart from today, when he needed to. He kept his head together. The

:11:16.:11:20.

doubles, the first two sets, he was awful. He didn't play well against a

:11:21.:11:24.

James Ward. But when the occasion demanded it, you could see, he is a

:11:25.:11:37.

bit like killing the -- Nastase. Sometimes, he plays the wrong shot

:11:38.:11:41.

and doesn't hit the ball, but today, he was tactically spot-on and his

:11:42.:11:47.

movement was far too good. In terms of Andy's performance over the last

:11:48.:11:51.

three days, how much do we think today was influenced by the fact

:11:52.:11:55.

that he had to play a game and a half, almost a game and three

:11:56.:12:00.

quarters, yesterday? It is difficult to say. It looks like he was

:12:01.:12:04.

struggling towards the end, but that doesn't affect Fognini's

:12:05.:12:08.

performance. His performance was just superior. I think Andy would

:12:09.:12:13.

admit that as well. If he was fresher, would it have made a

:12:14.:12:16.

massive difference? Maybe. It is not the shore. -- it is not for sure. We

:12:17.:12:25.

had to rush through earlier, because the players were on court, but we

:12:26.:12:29.

spoke about the overwhelming number of people on social media contacting

:12:30.:12:32.

us saying that it Murray hadn't played yesterday, he would have been

:12:33.:12:36.

fresher and wouldn't have tailed off in the match. It is interesting, but

:12:37.:12:41.

there is no guarantee that Fognini wouldn't have played like that

:12:42.:12:44.

anyway, and Murray would have lost. And if Ross Hutchins and Colin

:12:45.:12:47.

Fleming had played yesterday and would have lost, it would be game

:12:48.:12:52.

over by now anyway. Of course, he would have been fresher. Mentally,

:12:53.:12:56.

to play the two matches, is tough. I think it did have a difference. He

:12:57.:13:01.

didn't admit it but I think he was slightly tired. Whether it made a

:13:02.:13:04.

difference, who knows? But as captain, Leon Smith made the right

:13:05.:13:11.

choice. Firstly, Andy wanted to play. You have to get the rubbers

:13:12.:13:14.

when you can get them. You can't predict and say it will get tight

:13:15.:13:20.

and I will hold him back. Fleming and Hutchings are a good team, but

:13:21.:13:25.

would they have beaten the Italians? It was 50-50 at best. And I'm being

:13:26.:13:29.

generous. You have to be a very strong captain when Andy Murray says

:13:30.:13:32.

he wants to play in the doubles and you say, "I'm going to give you a

:13:33.:13:38.

rest. " It is not going to happen. If you are a number one player like

:13:39.:13:43.

Andy, all Djokovic, and they want to play, you play them. At the end of

:13:44.:13:48.

the match, match point, it was symptomatic of how the game ebbed

:13:49.:13:52.

away from Andy, with neither here nor there shot at the end. I think

:13:53.:14:00.

he was demoralised. It is not often that Andy Murray gets out and out

:14:01.:14:02.

beaten by a player, especially someone who is ranked below him. I

:14:03.:14:07.

don't remember many times it has happened. And to do it view our

:14:08.:14:11.

nation, when they really need you, he will feel like he has let his

:14:12.:14:17.

nation down. So it is a tough one to swallow, and that is why he has had

:14:18.:14:23.

his head down. It is only the second time that Andy Murray has ever lost

:14:24.:14:27.

a Davis Cup singles. The only other time he lost was his very first

:14:28.:14:31.

match, his debut, against Stanislaus Wawrinka, many, many years ago. You

:14:32.:14:38.

can see what it meant to be Italians after Fognini one. Absolutely. For

:14:39.:14:45.

Andy Murray, a lot of the matches he has played in a Davis Cup have been

:14:46.:14:48.

in the lower leagues, not his fault, he can only beat what is in front of

:14:49.:14:54.

him, but for us to stay in the Davis Cup and frame to play, he has to

:14:55.:14:57.

beat people in the top 20 and it is not easy to beat people in the

:14:58.:15:01.

calibre of the group that will be in the World Group from now on. In that

:15:02.:15:06.

British way that we do, deadbeat morose humour, we were saying that

:15:07.:15:09.

if we play Switzerland in the semifinals, Murray is not going to

:15:10.:15:15.

beat Federer, Wawrinka and then the doubles in succession, but stranger

:15:16.:15:18.

things have happened. So it would be nice to have the chance. I hope that

:15:19.:15:24.

if somehow James Ward can win this match, can you imagine that match?

:15:25.:15:28.

Semifinals against... Wherever they put it, they could sell three times

:15:29.:15:31.

the amount of tickets for that match. It is worth repeating that as

:15:32.:15:38.

things stand, Kazakhstan are very much in the box seat in that match.

:15:39.:15:46.

We all wanted to go to Kazakhstan big-time. I am googling all of the

:15:47.:15:52.

best hotels in Kazakhstan. That is the later in the afternoon. As far

:15:53.:15:56.

as the BBC is concerned, we have this, we have the Boat Race coming

:15:57.:16:01.

up, very, very busy next few weeks ahead.

:16:02.:16:11.

David Weir going for gold. A genius. Absolutely brilliant. Hamilton

:16:12.:16:24.

trying to defend. A scorching summer of sport, right here on the BBC.

:16:25.:16:30.

A lot of you are asking on Twitter, in the event of Great Britain facing

:16:31.:16:43.

Kazakhstan in the semifinals, why would it be in Kazakhstan? It was

:16:44.:16:47.

essentially tossing a coin because the two teams have never played in

:16:48.:16:51.

the Davis Cup before. The reason we would play in this country against

:16:52.:16:54.

Switzerland is because the last time they met in the Davis Cup, it was in

:16:55.:16:58.

Switzerland, so it was a reverse kind of way. Now you know. Let's go

:16:59.:17:03.

to Naples and see what the latest weather forecast is. We can talk to

:17:04.:17:07.

Russell Fuller. They haven't covered the court, which is presumably

:17:08.:17:12.

grounds for optimism? Yes, the clay court can take a few drops of rain,

:17:13.:17:16.

but it falls as we saw earlier in the week, when rainwater was spilled

:17:17.:17:19.

on the court when the covers were removed. They were close to putting

:17:20.:17:26.

the covers on. The referee of this tie was under the umbrella, it was

:17:27.:17:31.

"shall we, shan't we?" It has taken a lot of rain but it has now stopped

:17:32.:17:37.

and I would say very amateur weather forecasting, looking at the sky,

:17:38.:17:40.

there is a good chance we will have a good, long, dry period now and

:17:41.:17:44.

hopefully complete this match. They have swept the court. No sign of the

:17:45.:17:48.

players or supporters on either bench yet, but when they come out,

:17:49.:17:53.

because they have been of for 15 minutes, there will be a

:17:54.:17:56.

three-minute knock up, which will help James Ward, because it is not

:17:57.:18:00.

easy coming out after a rain delay and having to hold your server. That

:18:01.:18:07.

aerial shot we have had, we have assumed that the weather forecast

:18:08.:18:09.

was in direct proportion to whether you consider are the Capri in the

:18:10.:18:13.

background. Looking at that, it seems to be mist and fog, so is that

:18:14.:18:18.

part of the weather conditions? I don't think the weather is coming

:18:19.:18:22.

from there, but I tend to take it from the island of Capri as well and

:18:23.:18:25.

I can see it clearly at the moment. It is meant to be beautiful. We

:18:26.:18:29.

haven't had a chance to get out there. It takes around 75 minutes to

:18:30.:18:33.

get out there on the very, very small island, about four square

:18:34.:18:42.

metres. And a tourist resort, it helps if you have a few pounds or

:18:43.:18:49.

euros. From memory, a very famous British author used to go to Capri

:18:50.:18:52.

and found his muse, which acted as the inspiration for a couple of his

:18:53.:18:56.

novels, but I can't remember who it was. It is kind of irrelevant.

:18:57.:19:00.

Someone will look it up. Russell, just a quick thought about how the

:19:01.:19:04.

match sits at the moment. There was only breaks of serve, James Ward had

:19:05.:19:08.

his serve broken so many times and then managed to break back, he's not

:19:09.:19:14.

going down without a fight? Know, very impressive start in terms of

:19:15.:19:18.

attitude from James Ward. You can tell that he believes he can win

:19:19.:19:22.

this match. Talking to him, there was very little debate about who

:19:23.:19:27.

would play in this tie, him or Daniel Evans. He said that Daniel

:19:28.:19:32.

very rarely plays on clay and because he has played a Challenger

:19:33.:19:35.

level on clay and after his performance against Sam Querrey in

:19:36.:19:39.

the United States, they should be very little doubt, but he has to

:19:40.:19:43.

play well above his ranking. And he has been making too many errors from

:19:44.:19:46.

the back of the court, both forehand and backhand. If he can get this

:19:47.:19:51.

first set, Seppi is very, very nervous indeed. It is not impossible

:19:52.:19:55.

that James Ward can win this but we are asking an enormous amount from

:19:56.:20:02.

him again. You are back at elite spoke to Andy Murray, he seemed very

:20:03.:20:07.

down, understandably so. Off-camera, what was he saying about the match

:20:08.:20:12.

against Fognini? Very similar things. He was not making any

:20:13.:20:16.

excuses whatsoever. He spoke a little more openly about the

:20:17.:20:19.

atmosphere and he is definitely not using this as an excuse, he quite

:20:20.:20:23.

likes the bearpit atmosphere. He says tennis can be a very polite

:20:24.:20:26.

sport. Football is definitely not using this as an excuse, he quite

:20:27.:20:29.

likes the bearpit atmosphere. He says tennis can be a very polite

:20:30.:20:32.

sport. Footballers get abuse all the time a couple of spectators shouting

:20:33.:20:36.

out "loser" when he was beginning to serve. Something that has been

:20:37.:20:40.

slightly annoying the British team, according to Murray, is the habit of

:20:41.:20:46.

the Italian captain talking just as a British player is about to serve.

:20:47.:20:51.

He said in his general press conference that that is something

:20:52.:20:54.

that has been going on all week. Thank you, Russell, we will come

:20:55.:20:58.

back to you in a few moments' time. I suspect we will have play soon.

:20:59.:21:04.

Gracie Fields, I have looked it up. Gracie Fields had a house on Capri

:21:05.:21:12.

and Somerset Maughan wrote the Lotus Eaters about it. What does Leon

:21:13.:21:16.

Smith say to James Ward in this rain break? He is playing well. Russell

:21:17.:21:23.

said he's making errors and he is, but he has to go free. He has to

:21:24.:21:27.

take risks, which he is doing, but he will also be saying that your

:21:28.:21:32.

opponent is nervous, as we can see. Keep on him, keep it close, keep

:21:33.:21:35.

going for the ball, keep that first serve going in and attack like you

:21:36.:21:40.

are doing and this guy will go. That is what he has to tell him, your

:21:41.:21:44.

opponent will go if you keep it close. The very nature of the

:21:45.:21:47.

rankings means that the guys at the top are better than the guys at the

:21:48.:21:50.

bottom, or more consistent, that is one of the key things. James Ward

:21:51.:21:55.

spends most of his life playing against people who will occasionally

:21:56.:21:59.

hit troughs in form which means that he will get a cheap points, one or

:22:00.:22:04.

two and sometimes barrel loads. The disadvantage of playing someone like

:22:05.:22:10.

Seppi, you don't get so many gifts, which must presumably put a lot more

:22:11.:22:13.

pressure on you to know that you have to be more consistent and you

:22:14.:22:17.

normally would be on a week --than you normally would be on a week by

:22:18.:22:22.

week basis. It makes a big difference to how you approach every

:22:23.:22:25.

point. Of course, but you need to think about it a different way. It

:22:26.:22:30.

doesn't matter who you are playing, can I win one service game? Yes. Can

:22:31.:22:36.

I win too? Yes. What is stopping me winning three, four, five, six? Take

:22:37.:22:42.

it game by game. Can I break once? Of course. So do it more often. If

:22:43.:22:47.

he holds his serve here, he has broken plenty of times, he will be

:22:48.:22:55.

in the driving seat and thinking I have a chance, and Seppi were we

:22:56.:22:58.

thinking, this is tied, I don't want to go down 1-0. And that is when the

:22:59.:23:02.

crowd might turn. And that will be crucial but having someone like Andy

:23:03.:23:05.

Murray in your camp for these training weeks, when you have the

:23:06.:23:09.

Davis Cup, when you play with the champion like that, and you

:23:10.:23:13.

practice, you see that they are so greedy. They hate making errors.

:23:14.:23:22.

When we went out that like you are talking about Jimmy Connors, it was

:23:23.:23:25.

exactly the same, it was almost unbearable, because you've refused

:23:26.:23:32.

to make an error in practice, never mind in a match. And he looks at you

:23:33.:23:35.

when you make an error and says, I am here for a tough match, what are

:23:36.:23:39.

you doing? You play Andy Murray and you see he doesn't miss. James Ward

:23:40.:23:43.

knows this is the level he has to get to and when you practice with

:23:44.:23:47.

him, you automatically go up a level. So these Davis Cup wins, I

:23:48.:23:50.

have always thought can help you with the rest of your tournaments,

:23:51.:23:54.

or they should do, because it is a great learning post. When you are

:23:55.:24:00.

training with Andy Murray, it is a lucky week for you. Apart from Pope

:24:01.:24:03.

your country, your learning from the best. I assure that with this rain

:24:04.:24:06.

break, Andy has been able to change and will literally be in James'

:24:07.:24:14.

corner, which he hasn't been able to be for the opening games and I am

:24:15.:24:18.

sure Seppi will have Fognini cheering him on as the Italians

:24:19.:24:25.

tried to get to a semifinal. And, if from our perspective, Italy went

:24:26.:24:27.

through and went on to win this Davis Cup, it does seem the

:24:28.:24:31.

tournament is wide open. The only time Italy ever won the Davis Cup

:24:32.:24:37.

was in... ? You are looking at me? It was your fault. It is my fault?

:24:38.:24:45.

1976. They beat us at Wimbledon. Out, my fault. I think your brother

:24:46.:24:54.

was involved as well. He was. It was. I am sure he not watching, so

:24:55.:25:01.

it was his fault. Beautiful blue skies in Naples, I suspect we will

:25:02.:25:05.

have play. And there is Andy Murray, showered and cleaned and

:25:06.:25:10.

welcome to shed for James Ward, as this match is fascinatingly poised

:25:11.:25:14.

-- shout. All of those breaks of serve and here we are with James

:25:15.:25:18.

Ward, in a few moments' time, about to serve and try and stay in the set

:25:19.:25:28.

at 5-down. Back to Jonathan. -- five -4.

:25:29.:25:29.

JONATHAN OVEREND: Nice to see the sun in Naples, knock up so they can

:25:30.:25:36.

get back in the feel of things, and then a fascinating position to

:25:37.:25:42.

restart. James Ward, 4-5 in the first set, trying to hold a sequence

:25:43.:25:46.

of four games that have gone against the serve. Six out of eight. Three

:25:47.:25:58.

occasions, Andreas Seppi has led by a break, and all three times, he has

:25:59.:26:02.

lost his serve straightaway. No need the covers during the rain

:26:03.:26:12.

break, and no need for a jacket or sweaters right now. It is rather

:26:13.:26:16.

nice out there and Carlos Ramos, our umpire from Portugal, he has been in

:26:17.:26:24.

this seed many times before, the Davis Cup, grand slam finals -- this

:26:25.:26:26.

seat. The crowd are trying to generate the

:26:27.:26:40.

atmosphere a game during the knock up, so that everyone is ready to go.

:26:41.:26:45.

There is the view out, it is looking a bit better, isn't it?

:26:46.:26:55.

The train them from Rome to Naples, just a couple of hours -- just a

:26:56.:27:07.

train down. Visiting the Rome Masters every year. Working too

:27:08.:27:12.

hard... James Ward, then, come on. This is a good situation, because

:27:13.:27:19.

4-2 down, and then 5-3 down, a lot of people thought he was out of the

:27:20.:27:26.

set. And this man, Seppi, looking very tight indeed. The momentum is

:27:27.:27:34.

with Italy, no doubt about it, and he is the favourite, Seppi, because

:27:35.:27:39.

of his much higher ranking, but this is far from over. He really does

:27:40.:27:43.

have a good chance, I think, in this situation. Now is the time, though.

:27:44.:27:47.

A James Ward holder will put the pressure on again. -- hold. And the

:27:48.:27:54.

nerves will just spread around the stadium, one would suspect. It is,

:27:55.:28:02.

without question, closing out a fifth match in the Davis Cup, other

:28:03.:28:07.

than the Grand Slams, without question the toughest thing for a

:28:08.:28:10.

tennis player to do. Doesn't matter what your ranking is, and especially

:28:11.:28:14.

if you are a heavy favourite, which Seppi is, it is normal to get a

:28:15.:28:21.

tight anyway, let alone in the Davis Cup. It is a fun match to watch and

:28:22.:28:25.

we have seen already, he has had three breaks and lost them right

:28:26.:28:30.

away. He is tight right now. It James Ward can somehow win this

:28:31.:28:33.

set, then we have a match on our hands. If Seppi wins this set, I

:28:34.:28:39.

feel he will relax a little bit more and it might be troublesome. But it

:28:40.:28:43.

James Ward can get this set somehow, we might be in for an epic last

:28:44.:28:45.

match. Right, no setting in. No loose

:28:46.:29:02.

stuff, no fancy dan tricks. This is serious stuff, as James Ward

:29:03.:29:07.

restarts, serving to stay in the first set.

:29:08.:29:16.

This is not too different to the restart Andy had on the second day.

:29:17.:29:23.

Right in at the business end of the set. We didn't see Seppi do too well

:29:24.:29:26.

then. . He telegraphed that one on the

:29:27.:29:43.

drop shot. Could see that one coming. Seppi was on to it in a

:29:44.:29:49.

flash. Normally, he is good with the disguise but Seppi got up to it in

:29:50.:30:04.

plenty of time. Oh yes, that is a lovely hit.

:30:05.:30:09.

Especially on the third point after a restart. A sign of confidence.

:30:10.:31:25.

The line judges have been excellent in this tie so far, I would say.

:31:26.:31:36.

Called a fault but Ward will get another go at the first serve.

:31:37.:31:44.

Ward thinks he should have got that point. That is what he is

:31:45.:32:01.

complaining about. Quite possibly. Hard to justify. The call bait out

:32:02.:32:09.

as the ball hit the ground. Wide. Wide.

:32:10.:32:15.

Not by enough -- much but enough and it is set point. Risky play there.

:32:16.:32:20.

That was a typical shot shot to go for, he hit a huge second serve;

:32:21.:32:24.

went for that one and went for another big forehand and didn't get

:32:25.:32:31.

the balance right. 30-30. It has paid off in the past.

:32:32.:32:57.

There was. There were a couple of shots where Wardy could have moved

:32:58.:33:06.

up a bit. Instead of pressing and taking time away from his opponent.

:33:07.:33:12.

He let the Balcombe to him. That gives Seppi time to come back to the

:33:13.:33:16.

point. You sense he was waiting for the miss, during that rally.

:33:17.:33:21.

Exactly. Look how short he is leaving the ball, beyond the service

:33:22.:33:26.

line. That is not a shot Ward will be happy pushing long.

:33:27.:33:30.

Unfortunately from a British point of view Ward lost his serve four

:33:31.:33:37.

times out of five in that first set. And Italy have the lead in the

:33:38.:33:43.

deciding rubber. Now this might be the time now where Seppi might relax

:33:44.:33:49.

a bit and this is a dangerous period coming up here. Ward has to come out

:33:50.:33:58.

and play solid tennis. Needs to, otherwise the tie will be

:33:59.:34:02.

gone. Nothing Murray could do earlier about the form of Fognini.

:34:03.:34:13.

British fans still have hope. Italy are heading towards the

:34:14.:34:31.

semifinals as things stand. The key is to almost forget about

:34:32.:34:34.

that previous set, treat it as a warm up. Say, you February what

:34:35.:34:38.

let's start the match again, with a lot of time to get top story this

:34:39.:34:42.

match still, and start again, start afresh.

:34:43.:35:06.

That was all a bit wild there. Talk about Murray, is he talking to

:35:07.:36:42.

himself, or when Murray, is he just talking to himself? You can't blame

:36:43.:36:46.

him for that, if you had Fognini going nuts at you, you have to

:36:47.:36:51.

mutter a itle bit. I would love to find, is he directing it, trying to

:36:52.:36:58.

put you off on your serve? What is he doing? There is the great one,

:36:59.:37:05.

the great man. What a player he was on clay. In fact he holds the record

:37:06.:37:14.

for being the leading Davis Cup cup player and for having the most

:37:15.:37:16.

whiches as well. -- wins as well. I knew he would be

:37:17.:37:25.

there somewhere. Made 164 rubbers in total. Incredible.

:37:26.:37:31.

78 wins in singles, 48 win, 42 wins in doubles. Celebrated his 80th

:37:32.:37:41.

birthday last September. He was the captain when we lost to Italy.

:37:42.:37:52.

He is looking very confident now. First set was huge.

:37:53.:37:59.

That rain came at a bad time when you think of it. Now it has been

:38:00.:38:04.

proved that way, but Ward had momentum, broke back. Seppi was

:38:05.:38:08.

tight, 20 minutes break or whatever, and came back and now he is up a

:38:09.:38:11.

set, and looking good. Ward ending a sequence of, four,

:38:12.:38:41.

five, six, seven, eight, nine point against him. Close.

:38:42.:38:51.

30-15 in that final game of the first set.

:38:52.:39:03.

Digging in here, he needs to hold this game, desperately.

:39:04.:40:04.

Good effort from Ward there. Needed that game badly. 0-30 down.

:40:05.:40:24.

Keep thinking about his recent big Davis Cup performance, when he was a

:40:25.:40:28.

set down to Sam Querry, in America. He was two sets to one down to us

:40:29.:40:33.

the November last career in Coventry.

:40:34.:40:44.

Came back to one on both occasions. -- Tursanov.

:40:45.:41:15.

It is as if the crowd have lots of of their intensity. They don't feel

:41:16.:41:21.

their man is in trouble and they have not having to get behind him so

:41:22.:41:28.

much as the last match. Every point they were screaming in the last

:41:29.:41:29.

match. Not out of the question but a lot of

:41:30.:41:37.

them maybe felt the tie was over. Looking at the rankings they

:41:38.:41:43.

wouldn't know much about James Ward. They wouldn't be inspecting his cent

:41:44.:41:48.

Davis Cup history. No, that is true. So maybe that could play into

:41:49.:41:52.

Britain's hands f the local cheer squad has lost a couple of its

:41:53.:41:58.

number. -- hands, if.

:41:59.:42:03.

A few spots of rain as row can see on the camera lens there.

:42:04.:43:08.

A steady drizzle at the moment in Naples. The sun is out at the same

:43:09.:43:14.

time. No immediate threat to play, it

:43:15.:43:25.

doesn't seem. Captain Leon Smith trying to stay as

:43:26.:43:30.

calm as possible. Just to reiterate the simple facts he would have

:43:31.:43:34.

dropped into Ward before this match. One or two key points to think

:43:35.:43:35.

about. You can play through the rain on

:43:36.:43:59.

clay court as long as it is not too hard. Remember one of those Nadal

:44:00.:44:04.

Djokovic finals where most of it was played in if rain.

:44:05.:44:06.

Didn't hamper the quality. I don't think anything can in

:44:07.:44:15.

matches between those two. 40 times they have played. Their recent final

:44:16.:44:19.

in Miami. And a victory for Djokovic in that

:44:20.:44:21.

one. He had a good look that the passing

:44:22.:45:37.

shot. Does tend to make more mistakes on the forehand side, on

:45:38.:45:41.

big point, that is where you need to go to. You could have a choice of

:45:42.:45:45.

the two. These errors are definitely

:45:46.:46:10.

welcomed. You can see with Seppi, the

:46:11.:46:29.

difference of when he played against Murray, Murray had to work very hard

:46:30.:46:33.

to break him down, they were very long rallies and he's throwing in a

:46:34.:46:38.

lot of these sort of unforced errors on the third or four shot for no

:46:39.:46:41.

reason. That is all to do with the fifth rubber. That is what it can do

:46:42.:46:47.

for you, if James Ward can hold it close, and hold his serve twice now.

:46:48.:46:52.

He is still not out of this. A long way to go.

:46:53.:47:00.

I don't think he is moving his feet, Seppi.

:47:01.:47:09.

It is interesting, his serve and the follow up shot. We talked earlier,

:47:10.:47:15.

the footwork is the first to go when they are nervous. He looks shackled

:47:16.:47:20.

by fear. Just the impression. That last point. He is up a set too. That

:47:21.:47:26.

is what is so... I thought once he got the first set he would relax. It

:47:27.:47:31.

looked like he was after the first game but since then he has been

:47:32.:47:32.

shaky again. It is possible he is making the aim

:47:33.:48:00.

aion -- same assumption, maybe he thinks if I hang in there James Ward

:48:01.:48:04.

will give it to me. In the first set he kind of did. Now he is starting

:48:05.:48:09.

to get a few more balls in, and there, those cheap errors aren't

:48:10.:48:12.

coming as often as he would like and he is thinks "Hold on a second, am I

:48:13.:48:17.

going to need to do more here? " In comparison to first matches, it

:48:18.:49:01.

is a bit hit and miss that match. Come on, Dom, it is not very good.

:49:02.:49:05.

Itself is the first match of the weekend. The quality has been

:49:06.:49:10.

exceptional, until now. -- it's the first match of the

:49:11.:49:21.

weekend. No less dramatic. We often see that,

:49:22.:49:25.

it is about getting over the finishing line. If you have to win

:49:26.:49:31.

ugly you win ugly, you take the fifth rubber anywhere you can get

:49:32.:49:32.

it. We have already had the main course

:49:33.:49:54.

todayer for the tennis. -- today, for the tennis, this is still a

:49:55.:50:00.

tasty dessert, just because of the importance of it.

:50:01.:50:22.

A long way to go in this one as John says. An hour by hind on the score

:50:23.:50:32.

board, but I think in Ward can up his level to the standard we know he

:50:33.:50:36.

can play, there is every chance. Ward hit a good return. Nice and

:50:37.:50:41.

deep. If he can do more, like that, just by taking the ball earlier,

:50:42.:50:46.

think, instead of having to hit a great shot from behind the base, he

:50:47.:50:53.

can hit an average one from inside. We know Seppi doesn't like to be

:50:54.:50:54.

rushed. Oh goodness. What is he complaining

:50:55.:51:30.

about? Break point down, a lotly let call.

:51:31.:51:40.

He should be grateful for it. The way he is playing he will need all

:51:41.:51:45.

the luck he can get to get this done.

:51:46.:51:48.

Apologises. Doesn't mean it and on we go.

:51:49.:52:36.

He has done well there Seppi, because Ward played a good rally.

:52:37.:52:46.

Mixing it up, using the slices. Might be the best rally we have had

:52:47.:52:52.

actually. Good variation from both players, that forehand, that just

:52:53.:52:56.

heavy enough and wide enough to get Ward out of position. Couldn't deal

:52:57.:53:52.

with it. He played well there Seppi, to close

:53:53.:53:56.

that game out. Just one or two signs that the quality might be starting

:53:57.:53:57.

to rise. Not easy that. It is a very

:53:58.:54:08.

effective shot against James Ward, the drop shot. Because as we have

:54:09.:54:13.

been talking about, he stands a long way behind base, he is not the quick

:54:14.:54:17.

foeser the first three steps moving forward. If you can hit a half

:54:18.:54:22.

decent one, if Ward got this, he did get it back, but he has almost no

:54:23.:54:24.

chance of doing much with that. I don't think you are too chuffed by

:54:25.:54:57.

the choice there, your tennis team is behind ayour football team is

:54:58.:55:01.

taking the a battering at the moment. Yes, less than happy to be

:55:02.:55:07.

honest! What is it, 3-0 Everton? I think so.

:55:08.:55:16.

Commentary later. The boat race on BBC One as well.

:55:17.:55:19.

Loads of great live sport for you ahead, don't forget you can follow

:55:20.:55:23.

everything on on the BBC sport website or on the move through the

:55:24.:55:29.

BBC sport app. Get that if you haven't downloaded it.

:55:30.:55:35.

Remarkable. Five service holds. Very risky shot there.

:55:36.:56:56.

Generally speaking, John, for young players listening, when is the best

:56:57.:57:01.

time to drop shot. When is it most effective. You want to be if you

:57:02.:57:05.

can, right on the baseline, or maybe even before that and your opponent

:57:06.:57:10.

is a foot or so, or past that, behind the baseline, that is the

:57:11.:57:23.

best time. You get into patterns where players

:57:24.:57:27.

hang deep. You get the patterns of where Tay like to move. You can get

:57:28.:57:31.

in with a quick one crosscourt, a short drop shot where you hit it

:57:32.:57:36.

firm and short and quick and they are almost no chance and you put

:57:37.:57:39.

yourself in a winning position with that shot. It is a shot that has

:57:40.:57:44.

come back in fashion in the last ten year, it went out of fashion for a

:57:45.:57:47.

while. Oh well played James Ward. He has

:57:48.:58:01.

played three stunning shots there Seppi did well to get to that and

:58:02.:58:09.

hit a resent reply. James Ward's backhand is exceptional.

:58:10.:58:11.

Talking quickly about the drop shot. It has come back in to fashion in

:58:12.:58:16.

the last ten years since the power of the play that plays have got to

:58:17.:58:20.

find a different way to win point, to get people off the baseline. For

:58:21.:58:26.

a while there it wasn't being used. It is just another part of the

:58:27.:58:32.

variety that you have in your game these days.

:58:33.:59:00.

Ward doing well to get this game back to deuce.

:59:01.:59:36.

He has given away a cheap point. You let your opponent off the hook.

:59:37.:59:57.

That is a bad mistake on his favourite side. No real pressure on

:59:58.:00:00.

that shot, just skies it long. Somebody so experienced, such a big

:00:01.:00:14.

point like that, you wouldn't expect an error. It is good to see James

:00:15.:00:17.

Ward getting fired. The shot was there, it was the right

:00:18.:01:31.

shot, had the opening, didn't convert.

:01:32.:01:42.

Well recovered, Seppi, but James Ward probably should have finished

:01:43.:01:48.

him off. And the first break of set to go is to Italy. -- set two goes

:01:49.:01:58.

to Italy. He certainly guessed the right way, he ran one way because he

:01:59.:02:02.

knew he wouldn't have time to get to it and he guessed right. James with

:02:03.:02:05.

a pretty good passing shot. Just the one defeat on Leon Smith's

:02:06.:02:17.

captaincy record, that was to Belgium. And this man, the Italian

:02:18.:02:26.

captain, so much success with the Fed Cup team in recent years.

:02:27.:03:34.

Well, Seppi finally consolidates behind the break of serve at the

:03:35.:04:02.

fourth attempt in this match. And he does it all to comfortably. He moves

:04:03.:04:07.

to within one game of the second set. I just feel like James Ward at

:04:08.:04:13.

the moment, the last few games, there is a little bit of panic in

:04:14.:04:18.

the way he is playing and he is not constructing the points. The ball

:04:19.:04:21.

comes and he is just belting it and it is either going in... There is

:04:22.:04:26.

not much thought pattern going on, that is a sign of inexperience, just

:04:27.:04:32.

panicking a bit and not getting into it. You have to go for the ball but

:04:33.:04:36.

do it when the odds are in your favour and a few times here, he is

:04:37.:04:41.

taking unnecessary risks. It is going to quickly, there is a little

:04:42.:04:45.

bit of panic, I think. -- it is going to o quickly. I agree, he

:04:46.:05:01.

can't seem to build consistent pressure. In games, a couple of

:05:02.:05:08.

points are great, they're not so good. It sends a message to your

:05:09.:05:12.

opponent, doesn't it? If you are slapping at the ball, almost like

:05:13.:05:15.

you are thinking of the game when you lost your serve. And Seppi will

:05:16.:05:22.

be thinking, I don't have to do too much, I have to just play solid. He

:05:23.:05:31.

is thinking about and James Ward should not, might not be able to

:05:32.:05:36.

take advantage of that. But it is difficult to get confidence when you

:05:37.:05:39.

know you have taken two good shots and then suddenly two bad ones. You

:05:40.:05:41.

can't build confidence. That is a little bit of what I mean.

:05:42.:06:22.

He came out and hit a beautiful forehand down the line and then

:06:23.:06:25.

misses a simple backhand by a long way. Just can't string it together.

:06:26.:06:41.

One net cord apiece in the game. James Ward racing up the court to

:06:42.:08:52.

get that and then all too easy for Seppi.

:08:53.:08:58.

The chairman Philip Brooke in the background there in the blue shirt

:08:59.:09:09.

and shades. Possibly dreaming about hosting a semifinal under the roof

:09:10.:09:13.

of Centre Court. That would be spectacular. But we are a long way

:09:14.:09:14.

from that at the moment. That will keep the set alive. Make

:09:15.:09:32.

Seppi work for it, at least. Nice play.

:09:33.:09:47.

He had the chance to serve for the first set, Seppi, he couldn't do it

:09:48.:09:55.

at 5-3. He needed James Ward to help him out.

:09:56.:11:16.

Well, both players have struggled on serve all afternoon, but Seppi

:11:17.:11:22.

hoping for a second successive love service hold.

:11:23.:11:32.

And there it is. Huge task now for Great Britain. James Ward, lowly

:11:33.:11:47.

ranked, has to come from 2-0 down to win this tie. Has two still keep

:11:48.:11:54.

believing, though. As do. And Captain Smith has defined the words

:11:55.:12:03.

to make the difference. But a good job from Seppi, even though it has

:12:04.:12:07.

been scrappy and nowhere near the quality of earlier.

:12:08.:12:24.

This is for the right to play in the semifinals of the Davis Cup, which,

:12:25.:12:32.

fit Italy, would be quite an achievement. They won the Davis Cup

:12:33.:12:35.

back in 1976, runners-up on six further occasions. And here are the

:12:36.:12:41.

scores at the quarterfinal stage, at the top of your screen. The Czech

:12:42.:12:46.

Republic through, a fine recent record in this competition and even

:12:47.:12:49.

without a Tomas Berdych, they got the job done in Japan with no

:12:50.:12:53.

problems at all. You can see all the scores from across the weekend

:12:54.:12:59.

flicking by. You can see Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol, the men on

:13:00.:13:06.

duty, while the tie was alive. Jan Vasiliki is a very talented young

:13:07.:13:18.

player -- Vesely. France and Germany is interesting. That defeat for

:13:19.:13:23.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the first day was a big blow for France but the

:13:24.:13:28.

tie is level at 2-2 overall at the moment. Gael Monfils is a set to the

:13:29.:13:34.

good in the deciding rubber. As for Switzerland and Kazakhstan, what a

:13:35.:13:39.

tie it has been out in Geneva. 2-1 to Kazakhstan as things stand. Stan

:13:40.:13:45.

Wawrinka is leading Mikhail Kukushkin 2-1, from a set down,

:13:46.:13:50.

going with serve in the fourth set at the moment. So it looks like

:13:51.:13:53.

Roger Federer will be needed after that surprise defeat in the doubles

:13:54.:13:58.

yesterday. Federer will be needed to come in and salvage things for

:13:59.:14:03.

Switzerland. As the number two player. Correct. That can't have

:14:04.:14:09.

happened before. Know, can you imagine that? We have this player at

:14:10.:14:12.

number two, he is not bad, to close out the match...

:14:13.:15:10.

I think Federer, looking at his Davis Cup record, you have to go

:15:11.:15:18.

back to his debut in 1999, went Switzerland beat Italy, for the last

:15:19.:15:22.

time Federer would have come in at number two player.

:15:23.:16:06.

That -- in those days, it was a very different Roger Federer, learning

:16:07.:16:12.

his trade in Basel. I remember the Tory of him -- story of him throwing

:16:13.:16:17.

his racket into the curtain that divided the court there.

:16:18.:16:24.

It absolutely ripped the curtains into and he was forced to clean the

:16:25.:16:31.

toilets for a week. He remembers that. -- in two. He calmed down

:16:32.:16:40.

after that. No kidding! It was the thought of cleaning more toilets.

:16:41.:19:00.

Seppi missing a few shots that he probably wouldn't want to, but he

:19:01.:19:05.

knows that if he gets his break, he's effectively killing of the

:19:06.:19:06.

match. -- killing off. It is one of those rallies from

:19:07.:19:35.

James Ward, he hits the ball really firm and hard, but a lot of times,

:19:36.:19:39.

that direction, it is towards the middle of the baseline where Seppi

:19:40.:19:42.

can get the angles and get him off the court. James hasn't been doing

:19:43.:19:48.

enough that, where he can get his opponent off and then get the angle

:19:49.:19:53.

and for the big shot. Just blasting it but there is no purpose in it,

:19:54.:19:55.

really. What a serve. That was as big as his

:19:56.:20:09.

first, almost. Brilliant serve. If that was in, it is another huge

:20:10.:20:51.

serve. Caught the line. Going for broke, that is the shore. Good on

:20:52.:21:01.

him. -- that is for sure. He knows he has to take every risk possible.

:21:02.:21:22.

Didn't catch Seppi by surprise there.

:21:23.:21:54.

That was better with that forehand, opened up the court and then got the

:21:55.:21:59.

chance to build the backhand crosscourt and created the error.

:22:00.:22:08.

Pace is not enough these days. You have to get angles.

:22:09.:22:16.

Well done, very well done. Some big serving. Trying to get the crowd

:22:17.:22:23.

behind him. I don't know if he should have done that, to be honest.

:22:24.:22:28.

He will get the Italian crowd more on his back. But I suppose, if that

:22:29.:22:34.

is what he enjoys, but they are going to react to it. Ward doesn't

:22:35.:22:40.

strike me too much is the kind of guy who is going to care about the

:22:41.:22:44.

Italian crowd. He just needs to get some energy, something to change

:22:45.:22:48.

something and give him credit, he is trying to get himself motivated, get

:22:49.:22:52.

the crowd motivated, may be rattled Seppi a little bit with that hold

:22:53.:22:56.

after having many break points down. It could help him change the tie a

:22:57.:23:02.

little bit. It will be important to string a few points together and be

:23:03.:23:15.

solid in this next game. " Seve is a choker -- Seppi is a choker" they

:23:16.:23:17.

are singing. Charming! He missed that, but I like what he

:23:18.:23:51.

was trying to do with that forehand, at least.

:23:52.:24:22.

I thought he was going to get past after this approach shot, that ball

:24:23.:24:31.

just shot off. He likes those volleys at that height, that is

:24:32.:24:33.

lovely. That is a sitting duck. Seppi through it a bit too early and

:24:34.:25:01.

the Ark of the ball was always going to take it wide. -- the arc.

:25:02.:25:15.

If there is going to be enters British comeback, no better than

:25:16.:25:25.

now. So close. -- a momentous British comeback.

:25:26.:26:03.

He played the point well up until that point. I like the attack, I

:26:04.:26:09.

think he should be going short and low because he doesn't have those

:26:10.:26:19.

kind of flick shots. You are living it, Dom. When you are part of this

:26:20.:26:23.

team, you were a team-mate of Ward, just a couple of weeks ago. Must be

:26:24.:26:25.

hard for you to watch. It just feels like he is really not

:26:26.:26:43.

that far off being right back into this match. It just takes one or two

:26:44.:26:48.

shots, one or two points, and suddenly, this match could change.

:26:49.:27:26.

The momentum yesterday, we probably talk about momentum shifts in the

:27:27.:27:33.

sport more than any other, it is one on one and when one person just has

:27:34.:27:37.

something to cling to to give them hope, then it has a residual effect

:27:38.:27:40.

on the opponent. We saw it on the doubles yesterday,

:27:41.:27:53.

I thought the Brits were dominating the Italians, absolutely dominating,

:27:54.:27:57.

and it only took a little blip and suddenly, the Italians were right

:27:58.:28:01.

back in it. And here, I don't think Seppi is dominating as much as the

:28:02.:28:04.

British were yesterday in the doubles. It might just take one

:28:05.:28:06.

game. When you are down there on the

:28:07.:28:23.

bench, are you saying all of this stuff to Andy Murray as well? Are

:28:24.:28:26.

you having these conversations which are or are you a little scared to

:28:27.:28:29.

say anything, because you are so close?

:28:30.:28:44.

Jimmy and saying it to him while he is on the bench about James Ward? --

:28:45.:28:53.

do you mean. Like the conversation we are having now. Yes, I remember

:28:54.:29:01.

when James Ward was playing against Sam Querrey, I was saying to

:29:02.:29:04.

Fleming, who was sitting right next to me, Sam Querrey is constantly

:29:05.:29:09.

going wide, he just needs to chip it and get himself back in the point.

:29:10.:29:17.

Oh, dear, oh, dear. Fleming was saying the same thing and he

:29:18.:29:25.

eventually started doing it and that is how he started getting into the

:29:26.:29:31.

games. It is going to be tough from 2-0 down. Tougher still from two

:29:32.:29:38.

sets and a break. He just hasn't been able to get the balance right

:29:39.:29:43.

of attacking and not making too many errors. He has made so many errors

:29:44.:29:50.

today. Obviously, he had to be aggressive to a certain amount. If

:29:51.:29:53.

you let Seppi run him around, this match would be over already, but you

:29:54.:30:00.

have got to get the balance right, otherwise the errors just keep

:30:01.:30:04.

mounting up. At the moment, it is a couple of cheap ones almost every

:30:05.:30:09.

game. It is haar to build a momentum if

:30:10.:30:15.

you can't pick up the speed. He is stuttering.

:30:16.:30:35.

It looks as if we may be able to complete the action without further

:30:36.:30:42.

rain interruption. No. It is only small We could do with a rain

:30:43.:30:47.

interruption right now, for, forwardy.

:30:48.:30:54.

It -- for Wardy. The longer Seppi has to think about things the better

:30:55.:30:58.

chance you have of him choking, has the British supporter said a couple

:30:59.:31:02.

of games ago. He knows him too well! Worth noting

:31:03.:31:08.

that we will be transferring to the red button, in the not too distant

:31:09.:31:15.

future, so, find that remote again. This time the dog's got it!

:31:16.:32:34.

Since Ward lost his serve midway through the second set, Seppi has

:32:35.:32:40.

cruised through his service games. It was not that way early on.

:32:41.:32:54.

That first set was to crucial. Thought that before the match, if he

:32:55.:32:59.

got ahead, won that first set he would Saturday to relax, Seppi, and

:33:00.:33:09.

Ward, he needed that bad di. If he had got that are first set, he was

:33:10.:33:14.

on a hiding to nothing, and does tend to get nervous, that would have

:33:15.:33:17.

been, that would have been rough for him.

:33:18.:35:36.

He has done that well, today, hasn't he. We have to give him a bit of

:35:37.:35:43.

credit. This has not been easy I to. Coll into this situation, he might

:35:44.:35:49.

be experienced and at times he's has looked decidedly shaky but he still

:35:50.:35:53.

has to get the job done, he has probably played his best stuff in

:35:54.:35:56.

this third set. There is a lot of pressure going into this match for

:35:57.:36:01.

both player, more from him because he is expected to win. The press

:36:02.:36:06.

would give him a lot of stick in Italy if he lost this match, that is

:36:07.:36:16.

for sure. Two breaks.

:36:17.:36:38.

Things looked promising for Great Britain yesterday, 2-1 in the tie.

:36:39.:36:46.

Andy Murray carried the hopes today, but Fabio Fognini was too good.

:36:47.:36:49.

Playing scintillating tennis to take it all the way to this decider and

:36:50.:36:53.

this man Andreas Seppi, at the moment he is doing the business for

:36:54.:36:56.

the home side. They are on their way to the semifinals, it seems, leading

:36:57.:37:02.

the deciding rubber 2-0 with two breaks in the third.

:37:03.:37:06.

We have to leave the match now, here on BBC One, as we move over to the

:37:07.:37:11.

red button to make way for Songs of Praise, so, if you want to follow

:37:12.:37:15.

what may be the concollusion in this game, go to the red button now and

:37:16.:37:21.

if James Ward stays a magnificent come back we will be back on BBC

:37:22.:37:27.

Two, at 4.30 this afternoon. So that is in about 35 minutes time. But it

:37:28.:37:31.

does seem that we are not that far away now from bigging is bracings

:37:32.:37:36.

for Italian tennis, as they move towards their first Davis Cup

:37:37.:37:40.

semifinal, since 1998. They have only ever one it once, we were

:37:41.:37:43.

hoping that history would be made for Britain. It doesn't look like

:37:44.:37:50.

that way, it looks as Davis Cup hopes have seen napele and perished.

:37:51.:37:55.

-- Naples and perished.
