COMMENTATOR: Great Britain have done it in the most suspect secular

:00:11.:01:02.

style! -- spectacular. It was one of the most glorious days in British

:01:03.:01:08.

sporting history, winning the Davis Cup for the first time in many many

:01:09.:01:16.

years. They were semifinalist last year and today they start their

:01:17.:01:22.

campaign in Ottowa, against Canada. Before we look ahead of that tie,

:01:23.:01:25.

let's see the draw... No Roger Federer or Stan Wawrinka

:01:26.:01:50.

for Switzerland. Front look as though they could go forward and

:01:51.:01:55.

meet the winner of Canada versus Great Britain. Though the Djokovic

:01:56.:02:09.

the only player in the Davis Cup from the top ten. Leading the team

:02:10.:02:17.

from great writ is Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund, who has been growing

:02:18.:02:23.

with confidence and experience over the past three years. Plenty of

:02:24.:02:30.

experience in the doubles on both sides of the net. Let's see what the

:02:31.:02:40.

captain, Leon Smith, feels about the tie ahead.

:02:41.:02:45.

In the singles front, it looks like we are favourite in the Davis Cup

:02:46.:02:54.

rankings do not mean an awful lot with the crowd and the courts. They

:02:55.:03:06.

have played well at the slams over five steps and they now have Davis

:03:07.:03:12.

Cup experience. He sounds very positive. John, you know what it is

:03:13.:03:20.

like in the captain 's jet but now suddenly, Leon Smith has a couple of

:03:21.:03:26.

world-class players without Andy Murray. Who thought that would have

:03:27.:03:32.

happened. It is good because sometimes Andy cannot play and it is

:03:33.:03:39.

good to have backup. We could conceivably keep winning with Davis

:03:40.:03:51.

Cup. For the doubles, Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot very good. Andy

:03:52.:04:04.

is aiming to win everything he can in the game. Jamie has been very

:04:05.:04:09.

consistent in the big doubles matches but they have lifted the

:04:10.:04:16.

bar. Fantastic to have two players in the top 50. They have a lot of

:04:17.:04:24.

tennis ahead of them. They could be challenging for many years to come.

:04:25.:04:33.

Up against a 17 or old, familiar face from Wimbledon who won the

:04:34.:04:43.

junior at Wimbledon. A name we are going to look forward to for years

:04:44.:04:51.

to come. Denis Shapovalov. When he learns to harness those weapons,

:04:52.:04:57.

which he should, he will be a big talent. He is fearless. He will

:04:58.:05:06.

learn to temper it it a little bit but he is exciting and a great Balde

:05:07.:05:12.

striker and he will be very good. We expected to bring you the first time

:05:13.:05:17.

but in fact it has been completed and Dan Evans won it in straight

:05:18.:05:20.

sets. Shapovalov showed some potential

:05:21.:05:29.

with the serving and big hitting but Dan Evans was unstoppable. The

:05:30.:05:38.

consistency and experience. Breakpoint, Shapovalov, really doing

:05:39.:05:43.

the right thing but Evans showing the right thing. After he got a

:05:44.:05:51.

head, when he got the break, he never looked back. It was a very

:05:52.:05:56.

controlled performance. Well done to Dan Evans because of the pressure

:05:57.:06:01.

was on. It was a must win match and we have all been in that situation

:06:02.:06:06.

and no how much pressure that is. I thought he played superbly well, he

:06:07.:06:11.

went up against an unknown, yes, he has played against them in a match

:06:12.:06:17.

challenge last year but he is number one in the country in terms of this

:06:18.:06:23.

Davis Cup and I thought he was very professional. He never let his

:06:24.:06:29.

opponent get into the match. He looked like a controlled player stop

:06:30.:06:34.

a player who knows his strengths, knows that to play the game and very

:06:35.:06:36.

strong. You would think it was a home tie.

:06:37.:06:48.

Only a few hundred there but they are making their presence felt. A

:06:49.:06:55.

difficult and strong player as well the opponent for Kyle Edmund? Vasek

:06:56.:07:04.

Pospisil will present a lot of problems. He likes a fast court and

:07:05.:07:10.

he will come forward. He has had success in the doubles court winning

:07:11.:07:16.

Wimbledon a couple of years ago. If he was to pick his favourite

:07:17.:07:21.

surface, Kyle Edmund, he would not this one. He is more of a favourite

:07:22.:07:28.

now because in the first set, Vasek Pospisil held his serve and

:07:29.:07:34.

immediately called the trainer. This is really worrying for the Canadian

:07:35.:07:39.

team because of this is their must win match. Absolutely, they need to

:07:40.:07:46.

win this match and the doubles. He has had the trainer on twice

:07:47.:07:51.

already, not a good sign and you do not like to see this. Surprising in

:07:52.:07:56.

the way it happened. This is not a good situation. That was the

:07:57.:08:03.

situation just a few games ago. We are heading towards the end of

:08:04.:08:08.

there have been a few breakpoint. John and Jamie thank you very much.

:08:09.:08:17.

John is on the way to the commentary box.

:08:18.:08:22.

And even sided fan. He is aware of the leg, not sure it is much more

:08:23.:09:06.

than an eagle. -- niggle. First set pretty big, you would imagine for

:09:07.:09:11.

this man. Playing at home. Great Britain one rather to love. --

:09:12.:09:25.

rubber. Kyle Edmund has a bit of freedom knowing that Great Britain

:09:26.:09:35.

are one up. Lots of chatter, quite a contrast. UMPIRE: Time.. Scoreboard

:09:36.:09:53.

pressure for Kyle Edmund to deal with here. Serving to stay in this

:09:54.:09:58.

opening set. He moved so well for a man at six

:09:59.:10:13.

foot four. Very awkward for Edmund. Good defence. Pospisil has stolen

:10:14.:13:06.

the opening set, 6-4. 43 minutes. How quickly things can turn around.

:13:07.:13:13.

He looked so solid on serve, Kyle Edmund. It looked like classic

:13:14.:13:19.

scoreboard pressure. A few points were Kyle Edmund made errors early

:13:20.:13:26.

in the point where as if it was on a slightly more medium pace the court

:13:27.:13:32.

he would not have made that mistake. Every ball you are expected to do

:13:33.:13:36.

something here just in case your opponent does. Jamie, when the

:13:37.:13:43.

surface is so different. Melbourne was so quick, quicker than it has

:13:44.:13:49.

been for years. This is another to step faster. It is freezing outside,

:13:50.:13:56.

hot inside this arena, but totally different environment. Don't forget,

:13:57.:14:02.

they would have been there at least a week so they have had some time to

:14:03.:14:08.

get used to it full and British weather is not exactly amazing so we

:14:09.:14:12.

are also used to playing indoors as well so I guess that is our natural

:14:13.:14:22.

game has developed indoors. What is happening here is quite simply Kyle

:14:23.:14:29.

Edmund's game, the way he plays, it is quite difficult for him to be as

:14:30.:14:36.

effective on this court. Whereas Pospisil, he knows that the court is

:14:37.:14:42.

utilising his strengths. Just the four winners. Even though he has had

:14:43.:14:50.

the medical timeout and further rubdown on the knee, he looks to be

:14:51.:14:56.

moving fine. He is going to be a hand will on this surface.

:14:57.:15:00.

Especially now that he's one set up. Kyle doesn't look like he has broken

:15:01.:16:07.

sweat yet. He is definitely not pushing off

:16:08.:17:30.

freely on his left leg, off the serve..

:17:31.:17:51.

There is a lot of tennis to be played in this match. Let alone the

:17:52.:17:59.

rest of the weekend. Gave him half a chance and Edmund

:18:00.:18:13.

took it with both hands. What a pass that was. This could well be the

:18:14.:18:22.

moment that just sparks a little bit of extra energy into Kyle Edmund.

:18:23.:18:33.

Certainly the pressure has come on. 40- zero to deuce.

:18:34.:18:47.

And important hold and he keeps momentum. A tough game.

:18:48.:20:35.

Just looks concerned, in the conversation, there. I guess about

:20:36.:20:46.

the leg. I definitely think something has happened. He is not

:20:47.:21:14.

100%. Hands on hips. Boy, it is day one and he has to win three rubbers

:21:15.:21:19.

this weekend. He is literally tip toeing around

:21:20.:21:32.

the court. Never easy when you know something

:21:33.:22:15.

is going on down at the other end but not sure what.

:22:16.:22:46.

He has backed off on the returns and now he is backing off on the server.

:22:47.:22:58.

That is a way of finding some rhythm and build confidence. He really

:22:59.:23:18.

needs to hold here with his opponent ailing.

:23:19.:23:24.

He cannot push off, he cannot run. Kyle Edmund obviously aware of that

:23:25.:23:40.

stop rubbing his hands together. That is probably the best second

:23:41.:23:46.

serve he has hit. Jumped out of court.

:23:47.:23:57.

He would have challenged the call came late. Second double fault of

:23:58.:24:06.

the game. Breakpoint. A great response from Edmund. He

:24:07.:24:33.

needs to get fired up. APPLAUSE.

:24:34.:25:13.

He can't believe it. He just can't believe it. UMPIRE: Please do not

:25:14.:25:26.

make any comments between the first and second set. Thank you.

:25:27.:25:44.

Such a big game. It is a big serve, on a big point. This is where the

:25:45.:26:50.

bench and the captain is important. He looks like he is definitely

:26:51.:26:52.

disrupted by what's going on. Similar to what happened to Federer

:26:53.:27:11.

in the semi-final against Wawrinka. Wawrinka left the court with a knee

:27:12.:27:18.

injury and he came back with it taped and Federer couldn't deal with

:27:19.:27:19.

it for two sets. Well, two minutes Sharp now in

:27:20.:27:37.

levels and that was pretty big because a breakdown, with a man

:27:38.:27:44.

effectively on one leg, it makes the journey that much longer already.

:27:45.:28:37.

You've got one of those at home. Not of myself.

:28:38.:28:44.

First love service game. All eyes on this man. Six feet four, 193

:28:45.:29:31.

centimetres. We were talking about how the players these days seem to

:29:32.:29:34.

be getting slimmer and slimmer. He is still strong and thickset. He is

:29:35.:29:45.

a strong guy. He has the old serve volley build. Even if he was 100% of

:29:46.:29:55.

wood expect him to come forward. I would be amazed if we didn't see two

:29:56.:29:59.

or three points where he served the volley. You can see in the last game

:30:00.:30:04.

he is very natural and he knows when to put face on and face. A lot of

:30:05.:30:10.

doubles that really helps with that. Kyle Edmund will feel uncomfortable

:30:11.:30:14.

with that. Certainly on his backhand side. How tough is it to play

:30:15.:30:21.

against someone you know is carrying an injury. It is the focus side.

:30:22.:30:26.

Really difficult. In this situation it's a massive match, a World Group,

:30:27.:30:33.

and it is on a court surface where if it is just a bit of a twig or

:30:34.:30:38.

annoyance actually the court surface allows you to get away with it. If

:30:39.:30:43.

this was on a slow outdoor hardcourt, where it is 35 degrees

:30:44.:30:48.

and 30 stroke rallies every time you can't get away with it. But here,

:30:49.:30:53.

Kyle Edmund will still have to find a way to alt play his opponent on

:30:54.:31:05.

this court. That's a good start. It plays on your mind even more. A test

:31:06.:31:12.

of character for Edmund. Even when he has time on the

:31:13.:31:42.

forehand he doesn't look as settled as you would normally see.

:31:43.:32:20.

APPLAUSE. That's the difficulty here. Vasek Pospisil just uses the

:32:21.:33:23.

pace and serve and gets really deep in return. It doesn't matter what's

:33:24.:33:28.

going on the other end, it is cut shot on this court to do anything

:33:29.:33:34.

with. -- tough shot. Sets up another break point.

:33:35.:34:03.

He is clearly targeting the big weapon of Edmund to good effect. A

:34:04.:34:08.

set, 3-1. 20 minutes ago I was saying goes

:34:09.:34:18.

longer exchanges, Edmund was winning. Well, that's the best one

:34:19.:34:23.

Pospisil has played so far and what a big point that was.

:34:24.:34:33.

Adrenaline is a good thing too. He has got plenty of that today.

:34:34.:35:10.

Edmund must be hoping he plays the backhand more. How often has Edmund

:35:11.:35:32.

thought that, if he is? He is quick, isn't he? His two best

:35:33.:36:52.

moment so far have been two forehand passing shots. The speed in his arm

:36:53.:37:03.

is just a flick of the rest -- wrist.

:37:04.:37:10.

APPLAUSE. 26 out of the last seven games. Since the medical timeout.

:37:11.:38:12.

It is amazing what the Davis Cup can do for you.

:38:13.:38:24.

No real surprises. Second serves mainly going into the Edmund

:38:25.:38:40.

backhand. Sometimes it takes just one win to turn your fortunes

:38:41.:38:47.

around. We talked about his year last year, a poor start to this

:38:48.:38:52.

year. Hardly winning a match, losing the first round of a challenge

:38:53.:38:57.

coming in here. I think mentally for him absolutely that would be huge. I

:38:58.:39:01.

think there's a lot of tennis even still in this match to be played and

:39:02.:39:08.

Edmund will be trying to find a solution. I think if there's one

:39:09.:39:17.

perhaps question mark around his game, it would be the times I've

:39:18.:39:21.

seen him when a match has gone in a particular direction, a pattern,

:39:22.:39:27.

Kyle Edmund has struggled to do much to turn it around. I think this is a

:39:28.:39:30.

massive challenge for him right here. He's got the ability to do it,

:39:31.:39:36.

I just wonder... It's a question of unlocking something in his mind.

:39:37.:40:47.

He hardly moved in that point. Dominated the centre of the court.

:40:48.:40:59.

Reminds me of Andre Agassi towards the end of his playing days. Justice

:41:00.:41:05.

dams and moves you around, almost like a squash player.

:41:06.:41:12.

Still struggling with that puzzle we talked about, Edmund.

:41:13.:41:43.

APPLAUSE. He is confused. Enough to break

:41:44.:41:51.

point -- not enough. That's amazing, what we're seeing

:41:52.:42:09.

here. It really is. 5-1. Kyle Edmund has taken on games

:42:10.:42:29.

in the medical timeout. The very next one! After that break.

:42:30.:42:40.

So much of this game is in the mind. Especially when you get to the

:42:41.:42:48.

higher level, like these guys are out. Similar abilities. OK,

:42:49.:42:58.

different styles, but the margins... If you go inside the headspace of

:42:59.:43:02.

Pospisil and Edmund you would see some very different things at the

:43:03.:43:04.

moment. The credit Pospisil is doing here,

:43:05.:43:20.

he is doing it so well. As John Lloyd said earlier, when you

:43:21.:43:40.

have home advantage you dock of the court to your best possible

:43:41.:43:45.

advantage. -- doctor the court. That's what they are showing in this

:43:46.:43:47.

matchup. Eight out of the last nine games. He

:43:48.:44:28.

is on the verge of that with three set points. Two sets to love lead.

:44:29.:44:55.

Holds to love. Canada. Two set up. It just got a whole lot harder for

:44:56.:45:16.

Kyle Edmund. What does Leon Smith say right now do you think west for

:45:17.:45:23.

me there's one simple instant tactical shift that you can make

:45:24.:45:27.

straightaway. Kyle Edmund with his forehand loves, when he is in his

:45:28.:45:33.

own forehand corner, he loves to pull the ball across court into the

:45:34.:45:39.

opponent's forehand. And then he also loves to go inside in with the

:45:40.:45:45.

forehand. Well, Pospisil's best shot is his forehand. He needs to start

:45:46.:45:49.

getting onto the Foran. Whether that means unique to get into the net, I

:45:50.:45:53.

don't know. But he needs to get into the opponent's weakness. Kyle Edmund

:45:54.:45:57.

needs to win from two sets behind. I'm watching in the studio. John,

:45:58.:46:03.

Lee Yon is trying to get through, trying to turn this match around.

:46:04.:46:12.

But he is making all sorts of areas and miss hitting shots. Yes, he is

:46:13.:46:19.

playing an awful match at the moment, Kyle Edmund. What's

:46:20.:46:22.

surprising is he has come such a long way. Just look at, 45, he has

:46:23.:46:31.

to get that up. And one unforced error to 11. That's where he is

:46:32.:46:37.

losing. And also four winners. Kyle Edmund usually hits four winners of

:46:38.:46:42.

his forehand aunties and finding it on this course. He hasn't adjusted

:46:43.:46:47.

to the speed of the court at all. For me there's no presence with Kyle

:46:48.:46:51.

Edmund. He looks like he has gone into this shell and for this

:46:52.:46:54.

experienced player, he has played a lot of matches and is ranked in the

:46:55.:46:59.

top if we, there should be more than AMP -- more of an imposing look

:47:00.:47:06.

about him. Smith has said a lot of stuff. He has got to get together

:47:07.:47:08.

quickly. Yes, time is running out. So important for Kyle Edmund to keep

:47:09.:47:21.

holding his own serve and start pushing the scoreboard, finding a

:47:22.:47:24.

way back into this match. You saw him jog, Pospisil. He has

:47:25.:48:51.

been taking some sort of anti-inflammatory or some sort of

:48:52.:48:56.

medication, is it easing the pain? To set up certainly will. -- two

:48:57.:49:02.

sets. He has still only lost two points

:49:03.:49:40.

behind his second serve. Dan Evans on his way back courtside. It did

:49:41.:49:47.

look long. You can imagine Andy Murray on a

:49:48.:51:16.

quick court like this may be reverting to block returned just to

:51:17.:51:20.

get a lot of balls back. You rarely see that type of flexibility from

:51:21.:51:38.

Edmund. It is a fair point. Just get into the point somehow. The point

:51:39.:51:46.

about using his forehand and getting into Pospisil's back, for me that's

:51:47.:51:51.

quite a basic thing he needs to do and I take the point that you want

:51:52.:51:56.

to play to your strengths, but if your strengths aren't working a

:51:57.:51:58.

massive part of this game is actually turning that on its head

:51:59.:52:04.

and starting to think, OK, I know what I do well, what does he not

:52:05.:52:08.

want me to do? Have to think of it like that and I don't think much of

:52:09.:52:11.

going on right now. If he is going to get higher up that

:52:12.:52:39.

ranking ladder, he is 47 now, that's a must do. For me that's the next

:52:40.:52:45.

step for him. I think that would take a different level again.

:52:46.:52:57.

He is moving freely now, Pospisil. This match is slipping away very

:52:58.:53:03.

quickly from Great Britain. No wonder his cheeks are read! --

:53:04.:53:14.

red! What a fascinating point that was.

:53:15.:53:45.

Pospisil could not have set that up any better. Just a lack of a split

:53:46.:53:52.

stick at the wrong time. Fair play for Edmund for sticking in.

:53:53.:54:04.

He was putting all of that weight on the right leg. The left leg is the

:54:05.:54:15.

trouble leg. Protecting it as best he can

:54:16.:54:50.

The defensive shot he hit back, that is what you are looking at on the

:54:51.:55:03.

return. Below the height of the net, that is the shot you want to hit.

:55:04.:55:19.

Four points in a row, how timely is that? Just keeps a bit of a Davon on

:55:20.:55:28.

the crowd. Fighting to survive, here, Edmund. Interesting point to

:55:29.:55:32.

make, when things are going against it technically, he does not seem to

:55:33.:55:39.

be able to switch things up. How is the going to be able to develop

:55:40.:55:46.

that? It seems it is my way or the highway. It is subtle. You make a

:55:47.:55:53.

good point. In this situation, something not working, he will not

:55:54.:56:01.

start serve and bowling or chip charging, it is not something as

:56:02.:56:06.

extreme as that. It is a subtle shift in mind. You need to do

:56:07.:56:15.

something. It is not a question of me continuing down the path and

:56:16.:56:21.

doing it better and thinking it will be OK. This is not quite working,

:56:22.:56:27.

why don't I try blocking a few returns. This time I'm going to

:56:28.:56:33.

choose a different ball flight. It is subtle things like that which

:56:34.:56:41.

Andy Murray is the world 's best at that, perhaps ever. He was not in

:56:42.:56:52.

Australia against there of but it is a rarity. -- Kverev.

:56:53.:57:16.

It speed off the line. On this court, it does not need much

:57:17.:57:23.

encouragement. It has been phenomenal, the pace of

:57:24.:58:32.

the matches. Obviously, that court is quick no one is hanging around.

:58:33.:58:41.

It is great to see. You need to keep warm. LAUGHTER. It is minus 14. They

:58:42.:58:51.

skate to work on the can now which is completely frozen over! -- Canal.

:58:52.:59:02.

You need to worry about where you park your car.

:59:03.:00:06.

He has really struggled with that quick one. Pushed for time. Pospisil

:00:07.:00:18.

has had a lot of success with that shot.

:00:19.:00:30.

He has no support from any other players for the final of the Davis

:00:31.:00:43.

Cup was put it on neutral ground. No atmosphere, potentially and then who

:00:44.:00:50.

doctors the court? All the things that need to be really discussed,

:00:51.:00:51.

that is not one of them. Agreed. Ouch. 163 kilometres per hour and

:00:52.:02:14.

the return missed by quite a way. You do not have much time to get out

:02:15.:02:29.

of the way, do you? It makes you seat, if Raonic was here, you'd have

:02:30.:02:36.

to be wearing Armagh. That would be the ultimate message, it is hard to

:02:37.:02:45.

make a cannot see any obvious plan to get back into this match but I

:02:46.:02:52.

think the main thing is you have the opportunity. You can keep your nose

:02:53.:03:00.

in front. Your number one job is to keep in that position as long as you

:03:01.:03:05.

can and you can turn to the best of five sets around, one step and then

:03:06.:03:13.

the next step. Leon Smith has been his captain for his career on the

:03:14.:03:23.

Davis Cup. He is getting to know Kyle Edmund. Obviously, heavily

:03:24.:03:26.

involved in British tennis. Leon Smith, knowing your player, knowing

:03:27.:03:39.

when to speak, what they can take in. He is becoming a great captain.

:03:40.:03:50.

Pospisil, to set up, 2-3 down in the third.

:03:51.:04:18.

This is just the third time he has had the head start on a macro to --

:04:19.:04:31.

Pospisil service game. Over 30 unforced errors from Edmund,

:04:32.:05:39.

now. He has only lost eight points on

:05:40.:06:28.

serve. He has been a really relax, really smooth. It has felt like he

:06:29.:06:35.

is continually putting the pressure back on Edmund. See what you can do,

:06:36.:06:45.

can you hold? He has been buying time for a while, Edmund, but there

:06:46.:06:49.

is not a lot left. For me, I do not understand that

:06:50.:07:07.

shot. It is going back to the strength of the opponent and he has

:07:08.:07:14.

missed by ten feet. He has been doing that full past 1.5 hours,

:07:15.:07:22.

change it. They can be stubborn some of these players. Especially when

:07:23.:07:28.

you are good and they are very good players.

:07:29.:07:39.

Everytime he plays the way you suggest, he gets results. Is this

:07:40.:07:56.

another .1 or how he wondered, how will he see it?

:07:57.:08:05.

Can you imagine how many matches that woman has watched? !

:08:06.:08:57.

Look at the trouble he has had controlling that serve on the

:08:58.:09:01.

backhand side. Makes an awful lot of sense from

:09:02.:09:19.

here. He is taking care of his serve, pushing that scoreboard. It

:09:20.:09:26.

does not take much to turn a match around, especially a five set match.

:09:27.:09:34.

Momentum is important. Edmund is doing a great job in this set of

:09:35.:09:40.

keeping the lead on the scoreboard, holding his serve. I think,

:09:41.:09:47.

certainly since the first half-hour, if Pospisil was to lose these serve,

:09:48.:09:54.

that would be a great momentum change. This is his chance to win

:09:55.:10:01.

the match. He has been on top for a long period of time. Communication

:10:02.:10:12.

from the captain this time not there. Just giving him some space.

:10:13.:10:33.

7000 seats, the first time tennis has been held in this arena.

:10:34.:11:11.

Not getting much of a look in, Kyle Edmund. Zero from three in the

:11:12.:11:48.

breakpoints. A new set of balls. He needs to get

:11:49.:12:03.

that first Serbian. -- serve in. His confidence has grown in this

:12:04.:14:11.

match. That was almost exactly the same as the first point on this

:14:12.:14:14.

match. Huge power on that forehand. He is so feet. -- fit. He has really

:14:15.:14:50.

had trouble with cramps but he is really looking at how he can prevent

:14:51.:14:59.

that. Leaving no stone unturned, Edmund.

:15:00.:15:23.

Can the scoreboard help Great Britain here? Pospisil will serve to

:15:24.:15:38.

stay in this third set. LAUGHTER. The support Britain have had over

:15:39.:15:47.

the years is phenomenal. What a ride we have had over the last couple of

:15:48.:15:53.

years. I imagine a lot of people will see, with the crowd support,

:15:54.:16:02.

all the great matches they have seen, Great Britain lifting the

:16:03.:16:07.

trophy. That weekend was one of the best tennis experiences I have had

:16:08.:16:16.

in my life. That diehard tennis, the atmosphere was incredible. It really

:16:17.:16:23.

was. I did not see much dancing like that. That was a plus. LAUGHTER He

:16:24.:16:43.

has pretty much had this match his own way, Pospisil.

:16:44.:16:52.

Business as usual. He is finding that tea on both the juice and add

:16:53.:17:00.

court. -- deuce. Edmund has not hit a ball yet, in

:17:01.:17:31.

this game. He was either just being stubborn a

:17:32.:18:17.

gang war he is not focusing on the play you have highlighted a while

:18:18.:18:21.

ago. An obvious chance there again, also the top stay in the point. You

:18:22.:18:29.

cannot hurt Kyle Edmund from deep in the backhand corner. It has very

:18:30.:18:37.

quickly flashed like, your chance is gone. -- flashed by. 16th ace.

:18:38.:18:55.

No more challenges for Edmund. If they reach a tie-break, he will

:18:56.:19:31.

receive an extra one. Good to see some animation from

:19:32.:22:09.

Edmund in the last two points. He found a good first serve, a mentally

:22:10.:22:12.

tough point at Love 30. He is fabulous! You can say his leg

:22:13.:23:19.

is better. Definitely one of the best point of the match. Especially

:23:20.:23:25.

from the baseline, Pospisil was so quick to get around to use his

:23:26.:23:27.

forehand and Edmund was in trouble. Deep second serve. Skidded off the

:23:28.:23:55.

line. Oh, my God, that is huge. Huge.

:23:56.:24:36.

Terrific hold from 0- 30. He is hanging in by the capital H. She

:24:37.:24:43.

fended off a lot of energy and heat from Pospisil. That last point...

:24:44.:24:50.

The other thing about going back to the backhand, that was a great shot

:24:51.:24:55.

but he was also just hitting the ball back in the direction that it

:24:56.:25:01.

came. You see how his hitting it straight back, not changing

:25:02.:25:05.

direction. If you change direction it makes the shot doubly difficult

:25:06.:25:16.

and more errors come of it. But he has not made many inroads into the

:25:17.:25:24.

service game. If he gets a second serve, it might be worth coming into

:25:25.:25:33.

the net. Can you imagine the effect it would have on Pospisil? It seems

:25:34.:25:40.

to be a modern day thing. If they are not returning that great, they

:25:41.:25:52.

are loaded to change the position. Pospisil serving to stay in the set

:25:53.:25:54.

once again. There is the block return you called

:25:55.:26:34.

for. The pressure of the scoreboard, it was enough.

:26:35.:26:44.

The mood has suddenly changed in the arena.

:26:45.:27:26.

He has just about hung on to. Oh. That was tricky. It was. Edmund did

:27:27.:28:05.

well to get that serve back. It was a very good serve. Pospisil just

:28:06.:28:09.

held it on his racquet. This is high quality ten ish. Such

:28:10.:29:33.

an important time as well. -- tennis. Pospisil will do nothing

:29:34.:29:37.

more than just holding his position at the net. Very clever.

:29:38.:29:50.

On the two hour mark, ace number 8 comes down. It will be a tighter

:29:51.:29:58.

break to settle this third set. He gets the challenge back. Pospisil

:29:59.:30:14.

has four. He is very close to 90% of his first

:30:15.:32:17.

receives, Pospisil. He is 70% behind in his second.

:32:18.:32:26.

Is that on the line? We'll have a look.

:32:27.:32:41.

He went after him there, Pospisil to give it the effect. When he broke...

:32:42.:33:24.

When you add that intent on that point from Pospisil to punish the

:33:25.:33:30.

end in the second serve. Add that on to a couple of big serves with his

:33:31.:33:35.

record, it will be very difficult for Edmund. The next two points are

:33:36.:33:38.

crucial. We have been hearing that noise from

:33:39.:33:57.

him very early on in the match. The first round in Doha. He won a couple

:33:58.:34:04.

of matches. First round of a challenger coming in to this Davis

:34:05.:34:08.

Cup first round. You would think that last year as well, he lost in

:34:09.:34:12.

the first round of tournaments 14 times.

:34:13.:34:23.

He is very close to getting a win here.

:34:24.:34:41.

Four match points for Vasek Pospisil.

:34:42.:35:54.

The way he has been serving, he has got two points, the tie is level.

:35:55.:37:03.

Two hours and 8 minutes of very impressive tennis, especially on the

:37:04.:37:16.

serve for Pospisil. As devastating as Dan Evans was in the first match,

:37:17.:37:22.

it has been reversed. They are 1-1. It wasn't looking good that first

:37:23.:37:26.

half hour. It looked like he may have picked up a bit of an injury.

:37:27.:37:30.

That's a distant memory now. I felt like he had more of a plan on the

:37:31.:37:34.

court. Obviously he executed his game plan very well. The court

:37:35.:37:38.

suited him better but you can't really argue with that result. He

:37:39.:37:43.

played the better tennis and he deserved the win. A quick exit from

:37:44.:37:51.

Edmund. He did try to block that return to get it into the play but

:37:52.:37:57.

he left it a bit late before he was prepared to go outside of his own

:37:58.:38:01.

A-game if you like. It was a learning curve for the youngster. I

:38:02.:38:06.

think you look the way the first set went, it was the middle of the

:38:07.:38:13.

second set that got away far too quickly. That is a very difficult

:38:14.:38:17.

ask against anyone. Hopefully we will hear from

:38:18.:38:38.

Pospisil. He will besite of course that's for sure. He served really

:38:39.:38:46.

well. It was outstanding. 86% for points run behind his first second.

:38:47.:38:57.

70% behind his second. Saved all three break points. It's a

:38:58.:39:03.

tremendous in how Davis Cup can turn your fortunes around. It's one

:39:04.:39:12.

rubber apiece. He certainly certainly turned his form around as

:39:13.:39:18.

well. A very disappointing 2016, then he has come out firing. So

:39:19.:39:25.

solid there, 88% of first serves in. I am not sure we are going to hear

:39:26.:39:31.

this. There we are, so we will have our interview with Vasek, hopefully

:39:32.:39:36.

we will hear from Leon Smith as well. 1-1, at the end of the day, a

:39:37.:39:42.

wonderful performance from Dan Evans who defeated the 17-year-old from

:39:43.:39:53.

Canada, 6 hn 3 -- 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. 1 all, we will be back for the doubles

:39:54.:39:59.

on BBC Two. This is the world group as it stands at the end of the

:40:00.:40:03.

opening day. Still one match to be completed. That's the United States

:40:04.:40:07.

against Switzerland but Italy are two up against Argentina, German and

:40:08.:40:14.

Belgium, Australia is two up. Jack Sock has put the US up but John

:40:15.:40:21.

Isner has dropped the first set. Japan, are trailing 2-0 to France,

:40:22.:40:26.

and Canada and Great Britain one all. Certificate Victoria, with

:40:27.:40:32.

Novak Djokovic, two up against Russia and Croatia, 1-1 against

:40:33.:40:38.

Spain. So, raise /*. John, let's get your thoughts on that match. We were

:40:39.:40:43.

talking about how inconsistent in some ways that Kyle was looked. He

:40:44.:40:50.

looked rushed. He didn't have any time on the ball. It didn'tly didn't

:40:51.:40:57.

suit him. It was that -- it didn't suit him. It was that second set

:40:58.:41:00.

that went away. Just watching the way he played. Somebody of his

:41:01.:41:04.

ability, top 50 player, OK, he hasn't been playing that long on the

:41:05.:41:08.

circuit but he had a enough experience now, that he should have

:41:09.:41:11.

been able to hang in more on his serve. At least manage his serve. He

:41:12.:41:16.

has playing against a player who has no confidence. His record has been

:41:17.:41:20.

dreadful. You kind of sort of gut it out a little bit and show some

:41:21.:41:25.

presence out there for somebody who is ranked as high as he. Is he

:41:26.:41:30.

looked like the player who was bereft of confidence. Pospisil just

:41:31.:41:36.

looked like he won the grand slam at the Australian Open. I thought his

:41:37.:41:39.

attitude was not great today. It's difficult though when it's not your

:41:40.:41:43.

sort of personality to puff your chest out, fist pump and everything

:41:44.:41:47.

but you felt that he needed to do that, Pospisil was getting the crowd

:41:48.:41:52.

behind him and he was jumping up and down and high fiving everybody. You

:41:53.:41:58.

wanted Kyle to give something to his fans and his team-mates. As He is

:41:59.:42:05.

top 50 now, that match really highlighted probably the one thing

:42:06.:42:09.

in his game that I feel he needs to improve to go to the next level. At

:42:10.:42:14.

the moment, there isn't a plan B at all. If the - the few times I have

:42:15.:42:18.

seen him where he has come up against a player where the match-up

:42:19.:42:23.

isn't too good or the court surface doesn't quite suit him. He wasn't --

:42:24.:42:28.

he hasn't found a way where he can take a step back and he needs to do

:42:29.:42:32.

something else. You can change that by getting yourself into the match.

:42:33.:42:36.

Just one or two points can turn it around by getting involved a little

:42:37.:42:41.

bit more. You are right. Pospisil, you could tell from the first or

:42:42.:42:45.

second game. He was struggling to hold serve. I was almost thinking,

:42:46.:42:51.

are you burning too much energiserly on. Kyle Edmund didn't say a thing

:42:52.:42:56.

the whole time almost. I think it's tactics, his tactics were wrong as

:42:57.:43:01.

well. I know he favours going inside in and pulling a forehand across

:43:02.:43:06.

court. But Pospisil is so one sided, his forehand is so much better than

:43:07.:43:16.

his backhand, every time Kyle went into Pospisil's forehand. He was

:43:17.:43:20.

missing. Kyle fans look away now because here are a couple of

:43:21.:43:25.

illustrations of just how poor Edmund was today. Thses are not just

:43:26.:43:31.

-- these are not just forced errors, I haven't seen Kyle make errors like

:43:32.:43:36.

this for a long time. His forehand is known as a big weapon, world

:43:37.:43:40.

class but today, his forehand was not. Pospisil has a good forehand. I

:43:41.:43:47.

thought the match-up with favour Kyle, the speed of the court, maybe

:43:48.:43:53.

not but it was one sided. Kyle's forehand today, that's his go shot,

:43:54.:43:56.

there were so many errors coming from places. He was rushed a bit

:43:57.:44:00.

here and there. There were basic errors coming in. He looked somebody

:44:01.:44:04.

who didn't have any wins under his belt. He had no confidence out

:44:05.:44:09.

there. When we were looking at the trainer on set, this is looking good

:44:10.:44:13.

for Kyle. What about the doubles if they haven't got Pospisil in the

:44:14.:44:17.

doubles. He just - a second set he got better, the third set he gotten

:44:18.:44:22.

better, the way he was jumping at the end of the match, he will be

:44:23.:44:26.

back for the doubles. I thought there was a time that he may have to

:44:27.:44:32.

push out. He wasn't pushing off his left leg. Like you say, there is no

:44:33.:44:37.

better cure for an injury than a performance like that, an energy

:44:38.:44:41.

like that. He will have a bit of time recover. He will definitely be

:44:42.:44:44.

on the court tomorrow. Great for Pospisil today. But, Dan Evans,

:44:45.:44:49.

earlier today, he put Great Britain up in his match against the

:44:50.:44:56.

17-year-old Wimbledon junior champion, Denis Lovett-Murray. This

:44:57.:45:04.

is how he finished it off -- - Denis Shapovlov. Wonderful scenes out

:45:05.:45:09.

there against a player I am sure we will hear more about. Dan Evans

:45:10.:45:13.

carrying on from the Australian Open. Let's hear what he had to say

:45:14.:45:21.

to Michael Beattie after the match. You are on top of this match. What

:45:22.:45:28.

was the difference? I tried to get on top early. That was my plan, to

:45:29.:45:33.

silence him a bit and not give him much confidence on the court, to -

:45:34.:45:37.

an then, I did that very well and got - I sort of rolled him from then

:45:38.:45:42.

on. And then - I am happy with how I played. We can hear behind us, the

:45:43.:45:48.

support is pretty strong. Considering how many Canadians are

:45:49.:45:51.

here. They are making a lot of noise. I? I am so happy for them.

:45:52.:45:57.

Hopefully we can have something to sing about on Sunday. Is there

:45:58.:46:01.

something in 2017 that has clicked for you or has this been a

:46:02.:46:06.

combination of a long time's work. It has been a cumulative. I have

:46:07.:46:10.

been working hard for the last few years. I am starting to show a bit

:46:11.:46:14.

of form. Great performance today. Thank you, cheers. He is in

:46:15.:46:22.

tremendous form. 1-1, Nestor and Pospisil up against Jamie and

:46:23.:46:28.

Dominic. I think this is the best match of the on paper. Daniel Nestor

:46:29.:46:35.

is so experience, he is an Everreadiy battery - he keeps on

:46:36.:46:39.

going. Pospisil, the way he served and the speed of this court. They

:46:40.:46:48.

are not going to be easy to break. Inglot, he was number five. This

:46:49.:46:52.

match won't be on as easy as it looks on paper. I think this could

:46:53.:46:56.

be a close one. Looking forward to. That is tomorrow, you will be able

:46:57.:47:04.

to see it on BBC Two. I hope you enjoyed it from all of us here. Bye

:47:05.:47:07.

bye.
