The Belgian Grand Prix - Highlights Formula 1

This is fabulous stuff. What a start to the season. Fantastic

stuff. What entertainment we have got. We have got a race on our

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 48 seconds

hands. the 2012 jet -- Belgian Grand Prix.

All of the action coming up, but first, this is how things were

looking at, coming into this race after the summer break. This is the

start of nine races in 13 weekends. Fernando Alonso has a nice lead,

but 25 points for a victory these days. Jenson Button said he is not

yet ready to support Lewis Hamilton. He still believes he can be the

world champion. Red Bull are not having the dominance they have had

in the last two seasons, but they are still ahead. Voters would love

-- Lotus would love to finish second, if they cannot win. All of

the action from the race in a few minutes. This is what happened in a

remarkable qualifying session. Jenson Button took his first pole

position in Formula One in 16 races, and his first since joining McLaren.

He did it in style, the fastest time in each of these essential to

earn his first top-three start since Malaysia. Sauber also had one

of their best ever qualifying sessions, Kamui Kobayashi and his

first ever front row start. Sergio Perez will start in fourth place,

his best position. The Grid has changed attitude to penalties,

Pastor Maldonado has been dropped down to sixth place. Mark Webber

was seventh fastest, but he has a five place chopped due to a gearbox

change. Kimi Raikkonen is best placed of the others, in third

place. His last win came here from sixth place on the grid. Jenson

Button and Kamui Kobayashi on the front row, followed by Kimi

Raikkonen and Sergio Perez. Lewis Hamilton starts in seventh place

come up with a different set-up from Jenson Button. Paul di Resta

is ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Mark Webber's penalty put him into of

place. -- put it into 12th place. Nico Rosberg has a mountain to

climb from the last row for Mercedes.

We are getting ready to go for the Belgian Grand Prix. The lights are

out, of Weybridge go, and Pastor Maldonado shooting through. Paul

two -- it has hit it Lotus! Romain Grosjean over the top of Fernando

Alonso! Real drama at the start of the race. This has as a massive

impact in terms of the championship. This will be a safety car, they

will not be able to clear as many cars as that. The race is

neutralised. There will be nobody able to take the advantage. Jenson

Button leads from Kimi Raikkonen. The Force India cars, they cannot

believe it. Lewis Hamilton is out. We have seen accidents so many

times at La Source. Fernando Alonso is still in the car. Romain

Grosjean talking to Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso is still in the car.

The doctors are they quickly, they follow the grid at the start. There

is a car immediately behind the grid. Now, Fernando Alonso is

climbing slowly out of the car. They had a car forged over the top

of the chassis. He is taking some time to gather his thoughts. Let's

hope he is fired. Real drama at the start of this Grand Prix. -- let's

hope he is fine. We will be to see the full replay to see what caused

the incident. These guys just need to settle down, as the safety car

has been called, but we have lost a number of cars, and Fernando

Alonso's points to streak comes to an end, one short of the record he

was moving up to, 24 points finishes in a row. His luck has

ended, he has had a great run so far, but it has all gone wrong.

Force India have come from it all. They are in third place and fourth

place. Michael Schumacher is in fifth place, amazingly. What is it

with him and the circuit? His 300th Grand Prix. The Germans have moved

up, Nico Hulkenberg and Michael Schumacher. I am not sure why Lewis

Hamilton has got that memento of the accident. It does not have

quite a sexy part of the McLaren. His equipment on the face of his

partner. -- disappointment. Nico Rosberg has moved up to 13th place.

Let's run through the order. Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen, Nico

Hulkenberg, Paul di Resta, a dull market Pedro de la Rosa and Pastor

Maldonado are coming into the pits. Daniel Ricciardo is in sixth place.

Jean-Eric Vergne is in seventh place, and it Kamui Kobayashi, Gary

Anderson, this is not what we want to see at the start of the race.

They have taken out three contenders, it dilutes it a bit. We

need to see it again to see what happened, because Lewis Hamilton

seemed ambitious. Kamui Kobayashi looked as though he was slow off

the line and he caused a bit of confusion. We need to see every

play. Sergio Perez is about as well. -- Sergio Perez is allowed. Pastor

Maldonado went early. We have got Lewis Hamilton trying to get past

Romain Grosjean. That triggers the rest of the incident. Pastor

Maldonado. The cut the left of the screen, Romain Grosjean coming

across, into Lewis Hamilton, which triggers the incident. He went over

the top of the chassis of Fernando Alonso. Pastor Maldonado, it was

simultaneous with the lights going out. Romain Grosjean comes across,

Lewis Hamilton is not fazed. It all kicks off. The result is a lot of

expensive damage. Both of the sour because work involved. Sergio Perez

was the first one hit, and Kamui Kobayashi was on the outside,

trying to stay out of the way. This is on board with Kamui Kobayashi.

You can see the result of his poor start. He keeps out of trouble on

to the run-in, and then, all hell breaks loose. He was an innocent

victim. The result of the contact. Lewis Hamilton is going straight,

and Romain Grosjean comes across. They touch, and from then, it is in

the lap of the racing gods. The stewards will be taking a close

look at that. Romain Grosjean comes across very quickly. It goes right

racing, the driver's head is exposed. Formula One can cite a big

sigh of relief. That was so close to coming down are the top of the

chassis. Sebastian Vettel is trying to move through the debris. That is

where he lost at those places. Carbon is an issue, the splinters.

They need to clear it up. The teams have sensors that will tell them of

the tyre pressures and temperatures, so the drivers will be in

communication with their engineers. They will be saving as much fuel as

they can, so they can run the qualifying mode of the engine later.

The debris is all over the place. You saw Romain Grosjean talking to

the team, do you blame him for that? Was he cutting the cost too

much? You have to be very careful in changing direction at the start,

because you cannot know where everybody is. You have to presume

there is a car beside you. He should move slowly and deliberately.

Sometimes, you have to take every action, but to me, it did not but

like he was reacting to somebody. It up like the sort age gap and he

cut across -- it looked like. Once Lewis Hamilton saw him coming over,

he could have reacted, but at the moment, it looks like Romain

Grosjean was too aggressive. Sergio Perez shakes his head as he walks

back to the garage, he is out of the race. Kamui Kobayashi is at the

back of the field, and from a wonderful Saturday, it has gone

horribly wrong for Sauber. You have to feel for that team, they had

such an opportunity to score points. Perhaps even pass Mercedes in the

Constructors' Championship. Pastor Maldonado's stock was incredible.

Lewis Hamilton takes a straight line, he has a moment to make a

decision. He took the decision to hold his position, he got squeezed

further by Romain Grosjean, and there was unavoidable contact.

Anderson, that accident, it looks terrific. We have got another view

of it here. -- it looks horrific. The advances over the years, it is

almost a demonstration of that. the one thing that still stands out,

the driver's head, we have been a key again, but I agree with David,

with Romain Grosjean coming across, Lewis Hamilton did not have

anywhere to go. You do not want to be on the grass. A bit of a racing

accident, but more care and attention from Romain Grosjean

would not have done any harm. Hamilton Govan to Romain Grosjean.

He was tapping the side of the head, the international symbol of, what

are you thinking? You are a nutter! They will be exchanging views. It

is very difficult when they do not have the benefit of a replay. Eddie

Jordan? And unbelievable incident, it puts Force India in a fantastic

position. The strategy on the pit lane, they have got to have a look

at the situation and changed the strategy between the two cars.

restart takes place, Jenson Button has made up ground. In third place,

Nico Hulkenberg, then pour the rest. Sebastian Vettel is on a chase.

Sebastian Vettel has come out of the slipstream Ali. -- early. He

has passed Heikki Kovalainen. Perhaps a missed opportunity.

got past the Caterham, but they didn't get through. Nico Hulkenberg

has got past Kimi Raikkonen. Nico Hulkenberg has gone into second

place, Jenson Button Leeds. We have got more damage. It is Pastor

Maldonado. He has no front wing it. He has run into some but it, by the

looks of it. -- have run into somebody. Jenson Button has been

gifted even more space. Nico Hulkenberg, the young German racer,

has moved into second place. Paul di Resta is still behind the Kimi

Raikkonen. A great opportunity for Mercedes to score points here today.

Look at Jenson Button, he is running away at the moment. Only

the first lap after the restart, though. Kimi Raikkonen is down to

third place, then Paul di Resta, Michael Schumacher and Daniel

Ricciardo. He is holding on. Great images as they come through

Blanchmont. The smoke is coming off the underside of the Force India.

That is the plank with the extra fuel. Pastor Maldonado is under

investigation. It took a while to come. Pastor Maldonado decided, I

am ready to go. Charlie Whiting pulling away from the field at more

than half a second per lap. -- RADIO:.

Vettel has gone through. He has got past Mark Webber. Great driving

from both team-mates. We know they had an incident a few years ago,

but Vettel positioned his car on the outside. Mark could have

squeezed him, but he left enough room. Let's have another look. Side

by side on the way in. Mark could have squeezed, but he gave him the

space. Vettel cut mark's knows offer a little bit on the exit.

Ricciardo impasses di Resta. Daniel Ricciardo in the Toro Rosso, they

seem to have found some great pace. He is up to fifth position.

Worthington's struggling somewhat, being chased out by Jean-Eric

Vergne. He will be delighted to be in the points at this early stage.

Still a long way to go. Bruno Senna is still in eighth place. But now

he is being chased by Sebastian Vettel. Then Webber followed by

Massa and then Nico Rosberg. Petrov is in 13th place and Karthikeyan is

in 14th place. We've lost a lot of cars from this race already. Alonso,

Hamilton, Grosjean. Picking up on what I was saying about Force India

on the different tyres, if I look at Michael Schumacher and Nico

Rosberg, as we see the Vettel getting right underneath the

gearbox of Bruno Senna. Will he have the opportunity? Will he go on

the inside? Senna is good on the brakes. Not this time. He was that

in the pits? I think it is di Resta. He has bailed out on the option

tyres. He will be putting hard tyres on. Paul di Resta, the

sidewall on the tyres will tell us. Is fit his silver writing, it is a

harder tyres. -- if it is. Hulkenberg is still running in

second place in this race. Senna is now under pressure from Vettel.

Here comes the world champion! He just can't do it. He is in the rev

limiter, that is the problem with the DRS Open. If you are racing,

and I think there's been a change of position in front, Schumacher is

in front of Raikkonen. Why couldn't is really struggling. We thought

the Lotus would be shining in the sun at Spa. This is how Michael

Tippett. Around the outside. He put it over the curve to keep out of

the way. Good clean stuff. When they run into the corner... Was

there initially at this pit stop? - - it was there n Issue? Very slow

around the outside of Sernar. He moves back over to make sure Senate

doesn't shut the door. Vettel moves into 6th -- fifth place. Hulkenberg

has just moved into the pits. It means Michael Schumacher is now

second in this race to Jenson Button. Button is to allow there.

Hulkenberg back out on the softer compound tyre. He has to use that

higher at some point. He has decided to use it now. Interesting

decision by the team. They will be getting feedback on how his car

performs. Vettel done this successfully with Webber and does

it with Senna. Senna was very fair. It looks like Vettel needs to take

these tyres as long as he can. The extra speed through Blanchmont and

then it is battle of the braking. Senna leaving him just enough room

around the outside. I've tried to finish the sentence a few times.

Rosberg is being hounded by Raikkonen. I will finish! Vettel

have to try to raise four as long as he can on these tyres. If he now

does a couple of laps and pits, he will come out behind Webber and the

extra effort to get past Senna will not do much for him because it will

be too long and is Grand Prix to do it on one set of tyres. Kimi

Raikkonen is going quickly behind Nico Rosberg. But the other Lotus

is out. It was involved in that first-corner accident. Lee McKenzie

is with Romain Grosjean. Can you tell us the view from your seat?

had a good start and then a big boom but there are no more. I don't

know, I haven't seen the footage. The main thing is we are all OK.

you think you moved over to quickly? I don't know, I haven't

seen the footage for top you're OK. Yes. Romain Grosjean be involved in

the first corner accident that a cut Fernando Alonso and Lewis

Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel coming up behind the Toro Rosso. It looks

like a fairly straightforward pass. He has got in front of the Toro

Rosso. It shows how comparable the cars are. Here comes Raikkonen on

Rosberg. This was further down. Raikkonen is still coming through

the order. It looks as though he is on a two stock strategy. Button Ann

Schumacher, perhaps they will try position. Hulkenberg was sewing --

going so well earlier. Gary, let's have I think. The contrast of two

stops against one stock. We are on lap 15 ft up halfway of them raised

his lap 22. Vettel and Schumacher have just done the fastest laps of

the race. The softer tyre is lasting if you're looking after it

well. Jenson Button hasn't really lost anything. The tyres are being

a lot more durable than people expected. Button leader -- Button's

lead over Schumacher up his 3.6 seconds. Mercedes against Force

India. Hulkenberg going right around the outside, but from too

far back. Rosberg knows what to do. But slow out of the turn.

Hulkenberg Go to the outside will try to do it. Hulkenberg has

completed it. My goodness! There was contact. Karthikeyan.

Kovalainen gets released and clipped the back of the HRT.

There's a rule in place, you can't release your car if there's a car

in front of you in the pit lane that has crossed a certain point. A

mistake from the Caterham crew. board with Jenson Button. Gary,

Vettel is going quite quickly. Button, fantastic, very stable. I

think we are talking about the fact that the safety car meant the tyres

would go further. Look at this! Vettel trying to get past

Schumacher. Schumacher locked up. Schumacher comes then! He almost a

car Vettel by coming into the pit lane! Remarkable stuff, that is one

of the difficulties with the pit lane here. Vettel tried to get a

good run. But Schumacher, fighting for every piece of track position,

quite rightly. It caught Vettel by surprise. That is what you're

saying, Gary. Michael was losing ground. The team were ready for him

to come in. It wasn't just because Vettel was making a whatever of

himself. He was coming in any way. Vettel is going quite quickly with

these tyres. 20 laps old. Still doing a very good job. Vettel is

still a threat. He is best placed hasn't made a pit stop and he has

come from the back of the field. Tough for him to race against

people with much fresher tyres. has done a good job. He is quick

where he needs to be. He opened the gap and that allows him to take the

mantle from Jarno Trulli. We have got Schumacher, the door is open,

but he leaves enough room for Vettel and then decides to go into

the pits. Vettel was completely caught out and has a little moment

to himself. Great stuff! Jenson Button is coming in for a pit-stop.

There's only one McLaren in this race. Lap 20. That was surely the

target. Harder compound tyres. He has done a brilliant first stint,

Button. He just has to keep it under control. A beautiful pit stop,

too 0.6 seconds. Those pitstop dramas from McLaren at the start of

the year seemed to be behind them. It brings him out in front, I

believe, of Sebastian Vettel. That gives him... Rosberg is coming in.

He has given up on those tyres. A good effort from him. I think that

pit stop equals the record stop for a tyre change. 2.6 seconds. Button

has come out in front of Vettel. That tells you the level of

dominance from Jenson this afternoon. Amazing. They could

bring him out in front after a pit stop. Now that Rosberg has

disappeared into the pits, we have di Resta against Jean-Eric Vergne.

Senna is behind them in the Williams. The only remaining

Williams after we lost Maldonado. The young Frenchman, whose score

points in the second round of the championship in Malaysia, but has

been out of luck since then, and Toro Rosso have struggled for pace,

there's an opportunity for them to score points, but it will not be

easy. Force India will be disappointed that they can't fend

off the Toro Rosso at this stage of the race. Hulkenberg is up in

fourth place. Button still leads this race and Vettel is in second

place. Paul di Resta is struggling for balance on both compound of

tyres. This is a replay of Massa cutting vicar up at the top of Eau

Rouge. Anything pass by the looks of it. -- NEC pass. I'm not sure

that deserved a slow motion from the director. Vettel is into the

pits for his one and only stop. We think Webber will be on two stocks.

-- stops. Vettel will come up behind his team-mate, but he is on

a different strategy. That was a long pit stop. It will be nip and

tuck with that battle we were watching. Does he have enough

momentum to stay in front of the Toro Rosso? He certainly has in the

run into Eau Rouge. He needs to carry it over the exit. But the

Toro Rosso will be in the DRS activations own. So will Schumacher.

Co up the hill they come. A little look around, but nobody is going to

make a real move. Sebastian Vettel is locked into position, sixth

place. But he will go through to the end of the race on the set of

tyres. He managed on the softer tyres so it shouldn't be a problem

for top RADIO: People are one stopping this so we need a to make

a two stop. Nico Hulkenberg being told how it

is developing around him. I hope that is an odd message. -- old

message. By ensure they are fully on top of what is going on. -- I'm

sure. I'm sure there's some psychology when you tell people

what is happening. You tell them immediately!

RADIO: You are managing the tie as well. You are still pulling away

from Raikkonen. Your paces good. All well and good for Jenson Button.

He has a bit of traffic to deal Also, Heikki Kovalainen. They are

having their own battle, after Heikki Kovalainen's problems.

Sebastian Vettel will be under the gearbox of Mark Webber. Quibble see

who is coming in. Nico Hulkenberg, and Mark Webber. Their second pit

stops. We knew they had to make them. They will have good tyres

entered the end. All of the teams are stopping at the same time, 3.2

seconds for Red Bull, 3.7 seconds for Force India, but they still got

Nico Hulkenberg out ahead. He is ahead of the Jean-Eric Vergne,

Bruno Senna, Nico Rosberg. Mark Webber behind the Toro Rosso.

Another look at this release. As Felipe Massa comes in and the Red

Bull is released. He little reaction from the McLaren guys.

What I would like his every play, because you could see the market

board that is some way beyond the have Red Bull pit garage, which is

what the chief mechanic would have used. Narain Karthikeyan! He has

gone off. Up to not know how that was initiated, but he has hit the

barrier. That is at the bottom part of the circuit. Kimi Raikkonen and

Michael Schumacher. Will they be able to get the car recovered? This

is where Kimi Raikkonen crashed. A few years ago. He has done it!

fantastic move by Kimi Raikkonen. The get past Michael Schumacher.

Behind them, Nico Hulkenberg and Mark Webber. He does not decide to

go for a late lunge. Mark Webber still looking for the opportunity

to get a good run. Nico Hulkenberg, side by side. He will try to pick

up the DRS, as they come over the hill. Mercedes engine power for

both cars. The veteran, Michael Schumacher... Michael Schumacher

takes the position. He uses the dr restaurant to get back in front of

Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi Raikkonen has got a high downforce set-up. But he

is a sitting duck when they come to the high-speed sections. He has got

to overtake earlier in the lap. This is the HRT. Yes, it is just at

the top of the hill. He has put a wheel on the dirt. That at the

difference in the speed. Michael Schumacher takes the position

easily. Kimi Raikkonen getting close to the back of the Mercedes.

It is a difficult place. He will be in dirty air. Can he carried the

speed again through Blanchmont and pass into the chicane? Heat is very

close off. Mark Webber as well. is shaping up to pass. It will be

tight. Pedro de la Rosa, he will try to keep out of the way, but it

is hard to do so. Nico Hulkenberg is defending. Pedro de la Rosa gets

out of the way. The frustration for Kimi Raikkonen. A lock-up for

Michael Schumacher. RADIO: Michael is on a one stop. He is going to

have a go at Eau Rouge! What they moved from Kimi Raikkonen! Nico

Hulkenberg will get a run as well! That was brave from Kimi Raikkonen.

Nico Hulkenberg tries to take Michael Schumacher. Kimi Raikkonen

making the move. We saw Mark Webber make the move on Fernando Alonso

last year. Mark Webber is trying to get past Nico Hulkenberg. In the

background, Felipe Massa. He is trying to go round the outside. He

has to settle in behind again. Fantastic racing for the podium

positions. Jenson Button continues to control the race. Felipe Massa

definitely catching the group. is benefiting from them using heaps

of time. Kimi Raikkonen released his KERS down the hill. Michael

Schumacher for better of it. Nico Hulkenberg had a tank Slapper. He

did not know where Michael was. Raikkonen, he knew that was his

opportunity. Wonderful stuff from Kimi Raikkonen. The two great

curving head-to-head. Nico Hulkenberg trying to get past

Michael Schumacher. Mark Webber is tucked in behind. It is Mercedes

against Poor's India against third ball against Ferrari. -- against a

Force India against Red Bull. Nico Hulkenberg has passed Michael

Schumacher. A brilliant manoeuvre. That takes a lot of confidence and

commitment to go around the outside of any driver. Michael was fair on

the exit of the corner, he could have looked to the right and gone

left and made it difficult. He is coming back. He has done it! The

double DRS that Mercedes have, perhaps it is working today. Gary

Anderson, that Mercedes seems so good in that zone. It has got a

better drag reduction, because of the double DRS. I have got my

questions about the lap times, but Michael has been out there since

lap 20. Nico Hulkenberg's tyres are eight laps newer. It will get

dodgier. RADIO: 10 laps remaining. They will have to go to two stops.

That looks as though they will have to switch in the closing stages of

the race. They have tried to go for one stop, but they may not be able

to do that. That will bring him out just behind Felipe Massa.

Actually... Let me get back to you on that. It could be worse. Here

comes Nico Hulkenberg. He will try to go round the outside. He bought

the insight -- he holds the insider. The extra pit stop for Michael

Schumacher. Mark Webber is in trouble, Felipe Massa was right

appears gearbox. We know that Felipe Massa has been quick through

the first sector. He has a lot more top speed than the Red Bull. Felipe

Massa looks like he might be close enough. Nico Hulkenberg has

breathing space. He has got a really good run going, Felipe Massa.

Can Mark Webber defend? Felipe Massa claims the spot. The Ferrari

is looking very good in a straight line, and Ferrari are desperate for

Felipe Massa to deliver today, particularly with Fernando Alonso

in trouble. That was Jean-Eric Vergne. Side-by-side! Nico Rosberg

tried to fend him off. He has lost two places. There will be honour at

stake between the Toro Rosso drivers to be the first today.

is a good weekend for them. It is amazing, when you get clear air at

the front of a Grand Prix race, it allows you to race way you qualify,

effectively, or way you finish the first lap. A good performance from

them. Michael has emerged again. He has just in front of Bruno Senna.

Nico Rosberg fighting it as hard as he could have. He is losing grip.

Nothing moved. He tried to fend it off. He tried to push the Toro

Rosso as much as he could. But he was able to take the position. We

do not see much of Franz Tost, the Toro Rosso team principal. He is

barking instructions to his young drivers. He is quite brittle with

the way he treats the drivers. They will be getting doggie biscuits

today for good behaviour. Jenson Button looks very comfortable in

front. We were talking earlier, we have not really seen such a

dominant display this year. We have to think back to China, Nico

Rosberg. It is difficult to imagine now, but he was equally dominant

all weekend. When you just find the sweet spot within your own car in

your own space, you are invincible. Jenson Button Getting there pole

position yesterday, around a track like Spa-Francorchamps, it was

almost as good as winning a Grand Prix. He is not challenged, he can

add his 14th victory in 4 min one. He will move above you in the grand

scheme of things, at last! The victory coming earlier in the year,

so he will be another repeat winner. If they finish where they are now,

Sebastian Vettel would be on 140 points,... The Red Bull cars would

be very much in the hunt. Lewis Hamilton failing to score today, he

will drop back a little bit. He is on 117 points. It is hard for him

to come out of this with any positives. The accident was started

in an incident between himself and Romain Grosjean. There was contact

between the Lotus and the McLaren, and it all went crazy from there.

All of the drivers are OK, though, the most important news. The lead

was 14.3 seconds the last time around. Another competitive lap

time, 1:54.6. He has been through such a tough time this year. He

started the season so strong plea, he had the victory in Melbourne, he

looked strong in Malaysia, but they've really had a dip, they

could not get a handle on his car. But look at this, he is dominating.

He has found the sweet spot. It seemed to come from nowhere. RADIO:

We need to pick up the pace a little bit. Full power. He is

running with an engine note that is the tuned. That will be costing him

a few tenths of a second. He is down on KERS. Paul di Resta has a

failed KERS system, so that might explain why he is running in tenth

place. He is shy of Nico Hulkenberg. The KERS is the extra 80 horsepower.

It is worth a lot of time. Kimi Raikkonen response. A lot of

oversteer. Sebastian Vettel coming through. He has done a good job, I

would say, to only be 14 seconds behind Jenson Button, considering

where he was at the restart. Jenson Button has been pacing this Grand

Prix. A sign of a great driver, when you can come back from

difficult situations. Sebastian Vettel was 11th on the grid, so a

second place would be tremendous. Fernando Alonso did a similar job

in Valencia. The final lap. Jenson Button has seen nobody around him.

He got off the line beautifully, he was well ahead of the drama that

unfolded behind him. Ever since then, he has opened up the gap, he
