The Brazilian Grand Prix - Highlights Formula 1

classic race to finish a very special season. Better surely the

between Sebastian Vettel, the leader, and his challenger,

happen. The constructors championship has been wrapped up

that? All the action in a few moments but first, here is what

happened in a rather dramatic qualifying session. Her Iberian

before the start of qualifying saw the first cars heading on to the

damp track. Grosjean was hoping to get his Lotus past Pedro de la Rosa

but that move resulted in contact. He had to put for the front wing

but did not change his tyres and there was no time left for him to

get his Lotus up to speed. McLaren have looked like the cars to beat

and qualifying was no exception. It was Hamilton and Jenson Button

battled hard. But Lewis Hamilton was guaranteed. Jenson Button

crossed the line one 10th of a second behind his team-mate. In the

championship, Ferrari and Fernando Alonso you how important it was to

get ahead of Sebastian Vettel on the grid but Sunday's have always

proven stronger for Fernando Alonso and he had to settle for eight days.

With the rain affecting best, let's hope that we can see something like

that. Sebastian Vettel is 13 points ahead of Fernando Alonso in the

championship and whilst he might be in control of the title race, he

will hope to control today's race from the front but he had just one

flying lap to get it right and he crossed the line in 4th place.

Fernando Alonso. We have a race and our hands. Mark Webber did not get

away well. Everybody trying to check out those conditions. Look at

Felipe Massa into second place! Kimi Raikkonen gets off but gets

back on again. Sebastian Vettel has been hit! He has made contact.

much damage is on the Red Bull? What drama on the first lap in

Brazil. Sebastian Vettel has been hit. How much damage? We don't know.

Fernando Alonso is still running but in 5th place. He has got the

left side of the car damaged. He has been hit on his left side.

bit. Mark Webber has a real job to do. But Felipe Massa is in head --

is ahead of Mark Webber. Here comes Mark Webber, moving to the outside.

On the first corner, here comes Fernando Alonso down the inside!

Moving into third place! Which is just where he needs to be. TEAM

RADIO: He has got physical damage, it is a front wing, we cannot fix

that damage. Confer an that damage to the left-hand side. Sebastian

Vettel, across the line in 22nd place. Red Bull returning to the

garage. We have to watch these sec tors. He has got a race on his

hands to retain this World Championship. Felipe Massa, doing a

fantastic job. He worked that. Helping Fernando Alonso. If they

finish what they are now, Fernando Alonso would be the world champion.

Sebastian Vettel is out of the scoring range. We have lost some

key drivers from this race. Perez is moving to McLaren next year, he

had a real run of poor finishes. Under the points in recent races

and he is also out today. The is a very long way to go this afternoon

but the future of the World Championship rests with Mark Webber.

Will he be able to pull the past? He is getting in front of Mark

Webber. Hulkenberg passes Mark Webber. Remember, Hulkenberg was

fast tour a couple of years ago. TEAM RADIO: It looks OK. Looking OK,

and Sebastian Vettel has done one lap faster than anybody else.

1:21.3. And he is just at the back of the camera shot, he is just

crossing the line, 12.8 seconds behind the race leader, Lewis

Hamilton. Conditions are just a little bit slippery and this is

playing into his hands. Hamilton has got to be defensive. He does

not know where the conditions are. Look at the start, was met has a

great start. And then we can once again see Fernando Alonso taking

that brave outside line in to turn number one. You can save Sebastian

Vettel, they're covering each other and that just allows Fernando

Alonso to come around the outside, giving them position as they drop

down into the second turn. That was a cautious start by Sebastian

Vettel. Let's see from on-board with Felipe Massa. The clutch

burning away nicely. Watching in front of the Red Bull very well in

that shot. Just as a little look down the inside. He has been given

space by Jenson Button. This is the start from Sebastian Vettel. Winter

will, with his team-mate. That is just such as shallow line. -- wheel

to wheel. Let us see if we can find out what happened. It was Bruno

Senna who hit the side of the Red Bull. Look at the damage to Bruno

Senna. Reversing down from turn one before, just a little bit wide.

Nonetheless, that is a clear HET by Williams. That is what did the

damage to the side. We will be keeping a close eye... Fernando

Alonso has gone wide! He has gone wide! He has lost momentum! Mark

Webber is going to carry that speed. There is a Ferrari sandwich. Can he

hold of Mark Webber? Just enough speed. He has pulled it off. But he

has lost that crucial third place. Still early days. But Hulkenberg

having the drive of his life. Felipe Massa up the side of Mark

Webber. That had accident written all over it. That is such a tricky

corner. On these damp conditions, it is better to stay off the racing

line because all that rubber becomes very slick. Not quite

enough for them to want to put the intermediate tyres on a this stage.

The advantage was with Fernando Alonso but it is now swinging back

to Mark Webber. This crucial area, turn No. 12, the action down and to

turn number one. Passing both of his team-mates. And Mark Webber.

This is the lock-up. Oh! Look how close he came to spending out.

Fighting to keep the car on the track, fighting for this World

Championship. Hulkenberg goes through. Bruno Senna. The

collision... He got himself down the inside. That amazing

disappearing Red Bull. It did not happen. And there is a car off in

the background, hitting the barrier. Turn Number 11. Notice question

mark it is Romain Grosjean. That was a big crash. And Jenson Button

locks up. Daniel Ricciardo was just one fraction ahead of Wales met but

was it has got the place, so still Lewis Hamilton leading. What a

contest between these. -- Lewis Hamilton. Facing the wrong way!

What is going on? That is an incredible tussle up front.

Something has happened in touch her number one. Did he have contact?

high-speed corner and the judgment to be made is, can I safely remove

the car without endangering marshals and this is Jenson Button

coming out with the DRS wide open. Hamilton coming back at Jenson

action but Kimi Raikkonen has not gone as fast as Jenson Button on

these slick tyres. Still that dodgy area. Intermediate would be safer

but at the moment, if this rain stops, whoever is on slick tyres

will be better. The feeling in the cockpit is you can see Schumacher

are slopping down the inside of Lewis Hamilton. What we have won

the intermediate tyres, you have that block movement, it allows the

individual blocks to generate heat and this is Fernando Alonso, this

is a separate incident, fighting with those tyres. And this is

Sebastian Vettel? No, Kamui Kobayashi. I got carried away. We

shall see everybody coming in. They all run the risk of running on the

slick tyres, you're either on the track or you are off the circuit.

The work going on by the crew. There is some delay. Oh, no! That

happened so earlier -- so often in the earlier part of the year.

Championship contenders, both in. In the pits at the same time.

Switching to intermediates. Good stop by Ferrari, Red Bull? Very

good stop as well. Look how close they are. Remember, Sebastian

Vettel was down at the back at the end of the first lap. That will be

a soothing sight, he has got the World Championship in his sights,

they just have to keep him there. If they both finished in the points,

the championship goes to Sebastian Vettel. Timo Glock, trying to get

past Vitaly Petrov. Where do this lot back? -- were do they slot

back? And just going through. Arakawa, respecting the Red Bull

relationship. Not enough for comfort. TEAM RADIO: It has stopped

raining! It has stopped raining. He is staying out, he thinks he can

continue. The master of changing front? Let us see what happened in

Hamilton's pit-stop. He was told to be careful coming in but then there

was a delay. Kobayashi nipping past Felipe Massa, who is struggling on

his slick tyres? If you compare that last lap from the Blythe to

Vettel, eight seconds a lost by Massa. Vergne... Was it a spin from

Massa? Alonso is on the intermediate tyres and was allowed

through. Alonso's times is a long way off what Hamilton is doing.

Jenson Button is the leading by less than a second from Nico

Hulkenberg. He can use DRS to take Sebastian Vettel. He had the

slipstream to carry it down into Turn One. Massa has come in for his

intermediate tyres. Nico Hulkenberg is challenging for the lead of this

Grand Prix. It is a great performance from him, but a lap

times are getting slower. Will they stay out? If they don't stay in

they will be committed later on to staying out there if it gets more

difficult. Nico Hulkenberg is looking at the end of the main

straight. Just getting alongside, but not quite. The DRS zone is

coming up next so it is an opportunity to Nico Hulkenberg.

Bull looking at the rear of the car to see what the damage is. That is

a photograph taken to him -- taken and printed out and given to him.

Let's see if Nico Hulkenberg will try again. He used his Cannes to

get into the slipstream of Jenson Button. Jenson Button is leading...

Nico Hulkenberg has overtaken him. McLaren getting ready for a tyre

change. Who will it be? Times are getting quicker. It is Hamilton

coming in and Gary, it is changing all the time? The rain has now

stopped completely. Times should be getting better, it is about not

making mistakes. He has gone on to the harder, compound tyre. Alonso

is in as well. Sebastian Vettel lost about three seconds on that

lap. You expect to see the main contenders coming in as this track

is opening up towards the slick tyres. It is playing into the hands

of Nico Hulkenberg and Jenson Button. We can remind you what is

happening. Nico Hulkenberg is leading this race for Force India

from Jenson Button in second place. Lewis Hamilton was in third

position, but he has just made a pit stop. That will bring Sebastian

Vettel up. Alonso has just gone out on the medium compound tyres a.

dry line is appearing and Alonso finds the grip on those slick tyres.

Hamilton has just seen a bit of action with a Red Bull. TEAM RADIO:

Box, a box, box. Sebastian Vettel is being told to make a pit stop.

You saw the oversteer as he came out of turn 12. The pit crew coming

out ready. It is worth so it will be slippy. It is all OK. It is

looking like it is a relatively tidy star. Mark Webber is in at the

same time. Double stop, they practise this. Webber slots out

behind him. Rosberg has a puncture. He is dropping down the order.

look like the tyre was deflated. If I'm not mistaken, it is a slick

tyre. Unlikely it is anything to do with the tread a wearing out. Maybe

something happens? The safety car has been deployed. It is because of

the debris on the circuit. This will close of the field up together,

and we will see what effect it has. Michael Schumacher is running in

15th place current big, but the safety car is out and will gather

together the leaders. They will gather behind the safety car

initially. David, what an amazing beginning to this race? We are a

third of the way through and so much has happened? What an

Ferrari team Radio responding to Fernando Alonso. As the teams

have lost this huge lead. Hamilton was faster than them just before

the safety car came out. This would change the complexion of the race

completely. You have to feel for them, David, because they had a

fighting for a career in Formula One comedy has no drive the next

year and has to show what he can do. Hulkenberg still leads from the two

McLaren's and a Vettel is under pressure from di Resta. Kobayashi,

as you pointed out his driving for his career. I am not sure if there

was a chance of Vettel to get it then, but it was a mistake by the

Japanese driver. Di Resta is getting himself hooked up into the

back end of the Red Bull as the fuel his side thinning out. The

pressure is on Nico Hulkenberg, he has to set the breaking point and

enabled. He has to set the breaking-point, and that was Timo

Glock. Nico Hulkenberg has made it through the turn, but is not making

his -- helping his cause or with lock up. Lewis Hamilton get past

his team-mate, Jenson Button. They are racing hard. Lewis Hamilton

take second place from Jenson Button of. Watched a Massa comedy

will try to pass the Vettel. He won't make it easy for Massa. The

Brazilian sweeps past De Red Bull and Vettel, sensibly does not fight

too hard, he can afford to lose that place. Alonso is in force and

that is not enough for him. The Red Bull is vulnerable but thankfully

has a Toro Rosso behind him. Massa making a straight forward pass. He

is loving this. Look at the dry line, and that is what they are

trying to stick on, but if it rains again it will be ever so slippery.

The graphic showing they are saving up the KERS and I presume it will

be to use it out of turn 12? Vettel is running about 12, to Slough in a

straight line as Raikkonen Paul to the outside of Schumacher as they

break into Turn One. Battle of the champions, Michael Schumacher will

squeeze in. They run side-by-side through two. Can he hang on in

three? Nico Hulkenberg is complaining about the downshift on

the Force India, it is generating too much push in the sticky

conditions. The last thing you want when it goes down be gear is giving

you a shunting feeling. Kobayashi running wide through turn the one.

That will allow Sebastian Vettel to cut back out of two. Look at the

speed advantage Kobayashi has out of three. It is great straight line

speed advantage. Kobayashi is 4th fastest during this race so far,

which shows the Sauber which has been set up for a straight line

speed recently, is a good racing car. Nico Hulkenberg is still

hanging out in front. Jenson Button is still in the hands. Alonso is

not as quick as the leaders, but in fourth place. Kobayashi is fighting

position from Petrov who has the chance to stay with the team next

year. These are not optimal conditions as you see the rain

falling in the pit lane. Hamilton is in front of Hulkenberg.

Hulkenberg must have finally made a mistake because he has dropped to

second. This is up overturn six, brakes and gets on the white line.

Loses control. They are putting softer compound, slick tyre for

Sebastian Vettel. Not putting him on intermediates we have just

seemed Mercedes put on. Red Bull don't think there is any more rain

coming. That is another huddle completed for the potential three-

times world champion. It is a brave decisions from Red Bull, I would be

inclined to follow Alonso. You need to cover him this afternoon and you

cannot know how the weather will be"--. You have to navigate your

way all the way out to the exit of turn number three. What will

Ferrari do? They hope for something different to stay out there and

hope it to suddenly... I don't know what if they can hope for!

Raikkonen has made a mistake, I think. He has dropped a few places.

He went the sideways and had to take avoiding action. He is heading

towards South polo some were. He knew all about that, he has been

there before. Sao Paulo. He had to spin the car around and just makes

it. He has to go against the traffic to rejoin and turn 12.

Obviously it all cost him a lot of time. Does he have traction on the

grass? What a ride from Kimi Raikkonen! He did come from

rallying. It looks like a lot of to cut his way through -- Lewis

Hamilton. Going on a wild ride. Hamilton, right in the middle of

the traffic. Kimi Raikkonen, going wide again. The same thing going

wrong. I would not be surprised if he says, intermediate tyres, boys.

Does the head for the pits? Yes. Look at Hulkenberg, challenging

Hamilton for the lead. He will have a go down the inside. Oh no! They

touched. Hamilton and Hulkenberg, now it shall be a Jenson Button a

leading and Fernando Alonso in second place. How did that go

wrong? Look at the damage. Hamilton's final race at McLaren

ends with the damaged car, the Left Front folded up into the chassis.

And not quite sure where he is going to go with that. He will not

be able to fix that. He does not fancy being stuck on the outside of

the circuit. If he has got steering, he will try that back. What went

wrong is it is a damp track and Hulkenberg committed to the inside,

he had the inside line but he could not stop the car. Hulkenberg, in

the slipstream, pulls out, on the brakes. He loses control on the

turn and he just slides into wells that. What a shame. -- into Lewis

Hamilton. And then at the rear goes, Hamilton was giving him space, just

one of those unfortunate things. Sebastian Vettel, on intermediate

tyres, they got it wrong. Fernando Alonso has made that podium

finishing position. Let us just say where he comes round at the end of

the lap. We will see what he does, how Fernando Alonso reacts in these

conditions. Ferrari are getting ready and some tyres. Hamilton has

pulled off to the side of the track. Sebastian Vettel rejoins the field.

The Ferrari boys are in the pit lane. It did not work for Fernando

Alonso coming in from those slicks and why did he not just follow the

leader of the race, not the race, but the man you are trying to beat

in the championship. Fernando Alonso has gone through. On sex?

is struggling. -- on slicks. He will have a very slow run. The team

are ready for him and he took a gamble, he did that come in. Well,

is the banking on the fact that this rain will stop? Gary? Quite

heavy down in the pit lanes, not as bad as it was. That last lot from

Fernando Alonso, that was a loss of 13 seconds. I don't understand. If

Sebastian Vettel pitted, all he will do is the same thing. They are

making some front wing changes. That was a late call, they did not

have the tyres ready. It took so long to get them on. The radio

problems, Sebastian Vettel has made the call. The team have not heard

them. And he arrived in the pit lane. What does he want? It must be

intermediates. The incident once again. Hulkenberg was always going

to spin and Hamilton was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Well... Sebastian Vettel is getting past Kobayashi. Batty has gone wide.

That could be a crucial move because that is pretty much in

tonight is. If Sebastian Vettel is the without eight players at

Fernando Alonso is in second place, he is a world champion. Where will

this bring him out? Button is the leader. Jenson Button a leading

this race. Fernando Alonso, having made the pit stop, will drop back,

bringing Felipe Massa into second place but we shall check that once

he rejoins. We have the drive- through penalty for Nico Hulkenberg,

who is still running. That shop at Fernando Alonso up, behind Felipe

Vettel is trying to pick up the pace. He needs to take this title

in the closing stages of the Brazilian Grand Prix. And we are

seeing heavier rain and we have seen throughout the day so far.

Hulkenberg is still in second place, he has held on to second but he has

got that drive-through penalty. reason Hulkenberg is so far up the

road is he has only done one stop this afternoon and he will have

that drive through and that will cost around 14 seconds and dropping

down the pack. We have Jenson Button in for his stop.

Intermediates as well. It is wet enough, he will have to hold on to

the leader of this race, if possible. Sebastian Vettel, one, to

go, this was a challenge with Kobayashi. On the back straight.

Turn number four. Hulkenberg has gone wide. That allowed Sebastian

Vettel to cut back into the inside. That was a brave move. Kobayashi,

still on the track and once Sebastian got his car in sight, he

tried to stay with it. Round of applause for Lewis Hamilton. Going

back into the garage, he has had a fantastic career with McLaren and

he absolutely delivered and their trust in him as the young man...

You must feel for him. As he walks back in and watch as the outcome of

what will be a triple world champion. Fernando Alonso, turn

number three. Catt Ching Felipe Massa, little by little. And he

will help them out. Even if Fernando Alonso gets into second,

where Sebastian Vettel is, 7th place, is enough for Sebastian

Vettel to take the World Championship. He is still doing

enough, too 0.2 seconds ahead of Kobayashi. He has to stay in front,

basically. 9th place, Paul di Resta intent is, still not easy as the

conditions get worse. -- in 10th place. Felipe Massa will have just

lifted the throttle and will have allowed Fernando Alonso to carry

that momentum. His final run Prix, running in six place, three seconds

ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Will Michael Schumacher give up the grid

position for the racing result position to enable Sebastian Vettel

to be really secure for his world title? They were team-mates

representing Germany in Bangkok. am Mark Webber is currently in 4th

place, so obviously Red Bull could use that to have Sebastian Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel is looking relatively secure at the stage, all

that Fernando Alonso can do is stay on track. We do not know how much

damage is on this car, it got hit on the first lap of the race, it

seems to be running OK but there must be... One thing that we should

make a note of, Ferrari will be safe in second place, I think, in

the constructors championship, now that we have lost Lewis Hamilton.

On board with Sebastian Vettel, right behind Michael Schumacher.

Taking a very wide line across the start-finish and this is where he

thinks the safest group is. You can just see ahead, Nico Rosberg. We

have Rosberg, then Schumacher, and Rosberg running one lap down. And

he pulls over to the left, and here comes the past, does he see him? If

he does, and it is difficult with that spray, and I am sure that he

is aware he has got Sebastian Vettel behind him because the team

will have told him. His get... His last race. He does not put up any

resistance at all to his young German friend. Paul di Resta, here.

Trying to take 9th place. And he has gone through. Just enough space

for Paul di Resta to complete that move. You can see the car sliding

around and this is good news for Paul di Resta, the attention has

been on his team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, lapping HRT. But it

Shelby great with a few points. TEAM RADIO: Sebastian, you are

faster than the next fastest car. Just trying to calm him down, he is

doing enough, he does not need to take any risks. Jenson Button out

front, running slower than Fernando Alonso, he has no reason to push

the limit. He has got that played. Back to how we started, in karting,

this is the equivalent of hanging out his hand and getting into the

carburettor and chucking it and tried to bring it home. Still

tricky in terms of visibility. Kobayashi is catching Schumacher.

He is into the DRS zone. Sauber, slipping around. Kobayashi still

hoping to drive in Formula One next year, he has almost finished in the

top 10 in Brazil, he made his debut here in 2009, one of his favourite

tracks. Will Schumacher give him more possession than he gave to

Sebastian Vettel? A 100%, you don't even need to consider that. Nice to

pick up a few points on his last Grand Prix. Still under control,

everything looking good, three laps to go. The engine running

beautifully. That Red Bull - Renault Competition, which has won

the last two World Championships. On his way, once again, Fernando

Alonso, he has driven superbly once again. There was the odd mistake

but, you know, both of these guys have been under such pressure this

weekend and Fernando Alonso is doing almost what he needed to do.

Running in second place but Sebastian Vettel is doing just a

little bit more because he is getting enough points. The only

thing that will help Fernando Alonso is that Jenson Button had

reliability issues, that kind of thing. But Fernando Alonso has been

remarkable this season, all those guys who represent the top teams

have been pretty flawless. There has been a great display and it was

a little bit messy today but that was a great comeback for Sebastian

Vettel. When he spun out on that first lap, when he was pushed into

the spin by the other car, Bruno Senna, and then he rolled over the

rear of the Red Bull, I just thought it was all over but, no,

Sebastian Vettel came from last and he is running in six players and

doing enough to win the title. The if you believe in racing gods, they

were shining down. A Kobayashi, Ohno! He has lost a couple of

places. -- oh, no! We will have to check that out through the gloom.

How disappointing for him, when he just needed a good finish to end

the season. This is a run down into turn one before, chucking it down

the inside of Michael Schumacher and wax into the side of him.

Well... He suffered the consequences of that quite brave

move. Michael taking the normal line. And then Kobayashi spins.

race leader, Jenson Button, we have had 69 laps with just two laps to

go. For Jenson Button. He has won twice so far this year, he won the

season opener and it looks like he is going to win the closer. There

was one in between, the victory in Belgium. But these conditions so

often are made for Jenson Button. They did not work in Malaysia, they

struggled with the tyres in the wet but today has been classic. Crash...

Paul di Resta. Out of the Brazilian Grand Prix. This is in the last

sector of the lap. They will have to put the safety car out. The

information we had is that Paul di Resta is in the dry set-up and

Hulkenberg had gone for wet, which had worked fantastically well but

he has lost control in that final sector. Let us just see what has

happened. He lost it and he hit the wall. We have seen people crash

there before. The big story now is that Sebastian Vettel is the 2012

Formula One world champion. Surely. Because they are behind the safety

car and there will be no further changes and Sebastian Vettel will

complete failure by Jenson Button, it might change things but I cannot

see that happening under the safety car. Thankfully, where he hit the

wall, that was into the safer barriers that have been deployed in

a lot of American circuit. He had that metal barrier, which has got

polystyrene and other structures behind it. It was a high-speed

incident but, thankfully, he was able to get out of the car. Well,

this has been a season filled with drama and it goes right to the end.

Because they cannot remember when we last had a race finishing under

safety car conditions. It was a long time ago. As long as they

can... It happened at Monaco, but this race has just summarised the

whole 2012 season. We have seen Hamilton crashing out, Hulkenberg

been brilliant and Sebastian Vettel spending and recovering. Ferrari,

they have been up and down at Fernando Alonso, second, Felipe

Massa in third and it will be enough for Ferrari to take second

place in the constructors championship. All Sebastian Vettel

has to do is to drive slowly around to take the chequered flag. The

nervousness is still there because home for victory for McLaren. Lewis

the Third man in the history of Formula One, let's mention Fernando

Alonso. He did push the car and he pushed the race. In the end, that

is what motor-racing and sport brings out, it gives you the

highest of highs and the lowest of low as. He can feel proud this year.

It is great the way he leads the team and he is undisputed No 1 in

his team. It works for them and they almost won the lot
