Ascot. Lords and golf. And British racing green. There is no

:01:30.:01:36.

strawberries at Silverstone, no sound of rippled applause. Here,

:01:36.:01:44.

you get the perfume of petrol. You cover your ears against the shriek

:01:44.:01:54.
:01:54.:01:55.

of speed. To be heard you have to roar as a choir 300,000 strong.

:01:55.:02:00.

What you see sheikhs through the shimmer of fumes, an inferno of

:02:00.:02:07.

heat or through a spray of heaven opening. This is the bowler of

:02:07.:02:13.

sport in the mysteries of the British summer. On this stage,

:02:13.:02:19.

humans drive the drama. But near by, like a satellite of science and

:02:19.:02:27.

innovation. Cottage industries of the space age, were the cars are

:02:27.:02:37.
:02:37.:02:38.

King. This is an ancient land of modern machines. This is the

:02:38.:02:45.

countryside where the wheel spins at 18,000 revolutions a minute. In

:02:45.:02:55.
:02:55.:02:56.

the Racing Green Heart of England, this is Formula One.

:02:56.:03:01.

And this is the birthplace of Formula One, Silverstone. I don't

:03:01.:03:04.

think John Hurt could have some of the passion and emotion of this

:03:04.:03:09.

weekend any better. And for the best Formula One fans in the world,

:03:09.:03:14.

let's hope the sport can live up to its side of the bargain. Alongside

:03:14.:03:18.

me his David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan. Eddie, it is a shame when

:03:18.:03:23.

we come to what we believe is the best race in the calendar, the

:03:24.:03:28.

headlines have been dominated by the campsites and car parks around.

:03:28.:03:33.

It is a shame? The real shame is, the drivers and the teams did not

:03:33.:03:39.

go out on the track as often as they should have. The fans were

:03:39.:03:45.

cheated. Rain is coming so I don't know what they will expect. Be it

:03:45.:03:50.

was raining a couple of days ago, but as we can see from these

:03:50.:03:56.

pictures, it takes more than a bit of rain to put off the fans? In it

:03:56.:04:01.

does, these are hardcore fans. They are educated and have a great deal

:04:01.:04:06.

of knowledge of the sport. Eight of the teams in Formula One are based

:04:06.:04:11.

in the UK, but they support those who are not. I hope they have a

:04:11.:04:15.

greater weekend. A we will make this show extra-special for those

:04:15.:04:19.

extra thousands of fans who were told they cannot come here. We are

:04:19.:04:25.

thinking of you. Here is a man who can hopefully answer some questions,

:04:25.:04:30.

Richard Phillips, managing director of the circuit. I know it has been

:04:30.:04:35.

tough at the circuit, but it has been tougher for the fans. After

:04:35.:04:38.

such wet weather, most people are complaining the circuit was taken

:04:38.:04:44.

by surprise this weekend, is that fair? To an extent, I guess. We did

:04:44.:04:50.

have an unprecedented amount of rainfall. On Thursday, the car

:04:50.:04:54.

parks were sound and we did have provision for extra camping. But we

:04:54.:04:59.

had a double whammy. We had rain, come sides were close down and

:04:59.:05:03.

campers had no where to go and they were circulating and stopping in

:05:03.:05:10.

our traffic. To stop them on a grass car park was not my intention.

:05:10.:05:16.

It caused the issue where we are today. Hopefully, it is unfortunate

:05:16.:05:20.

to have to turn people away but at least we have a fighting chance for

:05:20.:05:23.

tomorrow and a lot of people are here. In the year 2000 the race was

:05:23.:05:28.

a bit earlier in the year and you had similar problems. The Dean not

:05:28.:05:32.

think then you would need hardstanding available, having

:05:32.:05:37.

things available in case they were needed? Park-and-ride is difficult

:05:37.:05:42.

on a Friday because the parking is used for commercial use. Coaches

:05:42.:05:47.

are in use as well. Today we have got it, and Samarra is an even

:05:47.:05:52.

bigger one. It is difficult, and to cover 800 acres in Tarmac or pack -

:05:52.:05:58.

- plastic is not practical. The water was coming out of the drains

:05:58.:06:03.

rather than going down it. It is difficult to tell 20,000 people not

:06:04.:06:07.

to come today, when will the decision be made about what they

:06:07.:06:13.

should do tomorrow? We will make an announcement early in the afternoon.

:06:13.:06:17.

A hard weekend, I am sure your staff will continue to work hard.

:06:17.:06:22.

The fans are working hard as well. We have said they are the best fans

:06:22.:06:27.

in the weekend, but it is not just Formula One fans, whether it is

:06:27.:06:32.

waiting in the rain for the Olympic torch, or on the remount, it is a

:06:32.:06:42.
:06:42.:06:56.

great British sporting summer. -- I love the Wellington boots, and I

:06:56.:07:02.

love the T-shirts. Are you all OK despite the rain? It is rare we

:07:02.:07:06.

come to a racetrack and on a Thursday that there are thousands

:07:06.:07:11.

of people. And even in the rain in Friday practice, they packed out

:07:11.:07:17.

the grandstand. We must be very truthful. And their arms and no

:07:17.:07:26.

better fans in the universe than we get at Silverstone. People take

:07:26.:07:31.

their holidays, they come camping. Instead of going off to Europe,

:07:31.:07:37.

they come to Silverstone. Let's hope they continue to do so. If we

:07:37.:07:40.

look at the calendar, it is hard to pick out a race that has not

:07:40.:07:46.

disappointed. Silverstone has its work to do. It has, but I don't

:07:46.:07:51.

think it will disappoint. It invites great racing, we have

:07:51.:07:57.

changeable conditions. It is the worst nightmare for the drivers in

:07:57.:08:01.

his build-up to qualifying. We have spoken to a few of the teams who

:08:01.:08:06.

are saying they don't know how to set the cars of. We have had dry

:08:06.:08:10.

running and works running. At the moment the rain is starting to come

:08:10.:08:16.

down. We should get our jackets on, but let's hope so Alveston can live

:08:16.:08:26.
:08:26.:08:28.

up to Valencia. -- Silverstone. Lights out and away

:08:28.:08:38.
:08:38.:08:53.

we go. Raikkonen gets past Grosjean. past Maldonado. Problems again in

:08:53.:08:58.

the pits for Hamilton. For front jack fell away. Alonso gets past

:08:58.:09:06.

him. The here comes a Alonso trying to get past Grosjean for second

:09:06.:09:16.
:09:16.:09:16.

place. The he is through! Fernando Alonso is in second place. Hamilton

:09:16.:09:24.

has managed to get past the locus. Vettel has a problem. That will be

:09:24.:09:34.

in trouble and Alonso Leeds. The -- Vettel. Grosjean in trouble.

:09:34.:09:39.

Hamilton is in second. Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus has gone

:09:39.:09:46.

into second. It is that the McLaren that has run out of grip. Hamilton

:09:46.:09:52.

breaks early and Maldonado tries to go around the outside of him.

:09:52.:09:57.

Hamilton is in the wall. This will allow Michael Schumacher to take

:09:57.:10:06.

third place. Fernando Alonso is the first repeater winner of 2012. The

:10:06.:10:12.

first time he has won in Valencia. A fantastic ride from Fernando

:10:12.:10:16.

Alonso, a tough weekend for Jenson Button. Preparation being put into

:10:16.:10:21.

his car to make sure when he heads out the qualifying he can deliver

:10:21.:10:25.

something special. But something that was picked up after the last

:10:25.:10:33.

race I want to share with you, form is temporary, class is permanent.

:10:33.:10:38.

This is the podium seven years before that Grand Prix. Do you

:10:38.:10:43.

recognise the faces? No big surprise, they are all world

:10:43.:10:48.

champions and great drivers. Class is permanent. Nick Turner

:10:48.:10:53.

Championship title standing on that podium in Valencia. Probably the

:10:53.:10:58.

happiest man, probably even more than Fernando Alonso was Michael

:10:58.:11:03.

Schumacher. He was on the podium for the first time in a long time.

:11:03.:11:13.

Eddie is with him. We hope to get them in a moment.

:11:13.:11:17.

Michael, you have been striving for the podium for the last number of

:11:17.:11:23.

seasons. How exciting was it for you and the team, the result?

:11:23.:11:29.

was a beautiful moment. Unexpected. It was an interesting last third of

:11:29.:11:36.

the race, lots of overtaking and action. A message from my engineer

:11:36.:11:40.

that I wasn't aware of. Seeing all four boys happy and finally tasting

:11:40.:11:47.

some champagne, it was very good. We all know the weather here at

:11:47.:11:52.

Silverstone, but we know about the bad times you have had. But also

:11:52.:11:58.

fantastic times, three victories. Can you get another? The weather

:11:58.:12:03.

will be a lottery tomorrow. There is an opportunity, and I hope we

:12:03.:12:08.

grab it. We wish you well. That man is so successful, but has been

:12:08.:12:14.

relatively unsuccessful at this circuit. But that podium puts into

:12:14.:12:18.

13th in the Championship. David, seven points was the biggest lead

:12:18.:12:24.

for anyone going into that race. Alonso now has the 20 point cushion

:12:24.:12:29.

over Mark Webber? You see where Ferrari were when they launch this

:12:29.:12:37.

new car. They knew from suspension. Their comeback has been amazing.

:12:37.:12:42.

Last time out there were problems as far as Red Bull were concerned.

:12:42.:12:47.

Mark Webber had technical issues and Sebastian Vettel retiring from

:12:47.:12:51.

the leader of the race. But Red Bull art in the lead of the

:12:51.:12:55.

Constructors' Championship. There has been many unfortunate headlines

:12:55.:13:05.
:13:05.:13:07.

off the track, all but what about on the track? Here is Lee McKenzie.

:13:08.:13:12.

With a sell-out crowd, the three British drivers will be hoping they

:13:12.:13:17.

can give the spectators plenty to cheer about. If it is wet, it is

:13:17.:13:22.

just as wet on the track. On Friday it look like a boat might have been

:13:22.:13:27.

easier. Lewis Hamilton has a big weekend with hopefully a good

:13:27.:13:31.

result, followed by carrying the Olympic torch on Monday. I feel

:13:31.:13:35.

honoured to have been asked to carry the torch for such a huge

:13:35.:13:41.

event. Such a great sporting year for England. So to be part of that,

:13:41.:13:46.

I feel very fortunate. Jenson Button has never been on the podium

:13:46.:13:51.

at Silverstone in his 11th British Grand Prix. He is relying on

:13:51.:13:54.

upgrades to help his chances this weekend. You always want more but

:13:54.:13:59.

the guys had done a great job. The way the regulations are, it is

:14:00.:14:04.

restricted in terms of what you can do to the car. We had a lot to play

:14:04.:14:08.

with last year, but this year it is different. If you can bring any

:14:08.:14:13.

upgrades, it is fantastic. Fernando Alonso is still on a high after

:14:13.:14:17.

Valencia. There were smiles and there was crying. But when he

:14:17.:14:22.

watched the race back, it wasn't quite how he remembered it. When

:14:22.:14:27.

you are driving, you don't know exactly how the race is moving and

:14:27.:14:36.

how the situation is at the back. What a Michael and Webber,

:14:36.:14:41.

strategies, you understand in the car, only to concentrate. Stewards

:14:41.:14:45.

were kept busy at the the European Grand Prix which means two drivers

:14:46.:14:55.
:14:56.:15:05.

carry a penalty. Jean-Eric Vergne carries a $20,000 fine. And Pastor

:15:05.:15:09.

Maldonado escapes any penalties this weekend. So was the more

:15:09.:15:13.

rabbits biggest crowd this weekend with 125,000 people expected on

:15:13.:15:19.

Sunday. Organisers say contingency plans are in place for the rain, so

:15:20.:15:23.

even if the weather disappoint the weather was still be great for the

:15:23.:15:33.
:15:33.:15:34.

me they are setting the car up for a dry qualifying session. I will

:15:34.:15:38.

not tell them that it is training at the moment. Let's talk about the

:15:38.:15:43.

very unfortunate testing accident for the Spanish driver, involved

:15:43.:15:47.

with the Marussia team. It is fair to say that Formula 1 has been

:15:47.:15:52.

pretty shocked by this. Yes, it was very bird news when we heard about

:15:52.:15:57.

Maria, especially in Spain, for her family, but also for Formula 1.

:15:57.:16:01.

Things like that should not happen. Formula One is very safe, it has

:16:01.:16:05.

gone through the last years with big development. I know Maria very

:16:05.:16:12.

well, I know all her family since the old days, they are running a

:16:12.:16:17.

scholarship for young drivers in Spain. They have always had very

:16:17.:16:24.

good relationships with motor sport. It is a real shame. She is a great

:16:24.:16:30.

person. She was the last person to deserve something like that. It is

:16:30.:16:38.

a real shame, and we hope that she recovers very, very fast. And you

:16:38.:16:43.

can see the star on the wing mirror, and we have seen Lewis Hamilton

:16:43.:16:47.

doing the same thing to his helmet. I know you're in touch with the

:16:47.:16:51.

family, they come from a Spanish racing dynasty - what is the latest

:16:51.:16:58.

news from the hospital? I went to the hospital yesterday, it was the

:16:58.:17:03.

minimum thing I could do for the family. I saw her parents. I do not

:17:03.:17:06.

know much about the situation of Maria, because I'm not sure if

:17:06.:17:13.

anybody knows much, because the she is in special treatment in hospital.

:17:13.:17:18.

I think she has had two operations at the moment, she had one

:17:18.:17:22.

yesterday late afternoon, and I don't know much more than that. She

:17:22.:17:26.

is in a stable condition, a bit critical, but stable, which is

:17:26.:17:31.

always important. I think what we all want is that she recovers and

:17:31.:17:37.

that she is back with us soon. We want her just in one piece. I wish

:17:37.:17:40.

we were talking about happier news, but thank you very much for coming

:17:40.:17:45.

down to speak to us. Jaime Alguersuari will be the co-

:17:45.:17:48.

commentator on Radio 5 Live, as he is for every single Grand Prix. We

:17:49.:17:53.

send our best wishes to the family of Maria, and a huge thank you to

:17:53.:17:58.

the staff at Adam Brookes. A lot of pressure this weekend on the Force

:17:58.:18:01.

India team. They did really well in Valencia, but they have struggled

:18:01.:18:08.

for points so far this season. What they needed was a visit from our

:18:08.:18:18.
:18:18.:18:32.

British Grand Prix for the foreseeable future. I am going to

:18:32.:18:37.

take you on a walk down memory lane, to visit Force India, the former

:18:37.:18:44.

home of Jordan Grand Prix. So, Paul di Resta, we have finally drag you

:18:44.:18:51.

into this. This used to be my office. I always felt we had an

:18:51.:18:55.

excellent designer. I think if I was your boss now, I would have

:18:55.:18:58.

sold you by now, because you're going to ask for too much money

:18:58.:19:03.

next year, I would not want to pay it to you, and I would find juicy

:19:03.:19:06.

little players like Ferrari or Mercedes to pay me good money for

:19:06.:19:11.

you, and move on to another young star. What you think about that?

:19:11.:19:20.

Gladly, you're not my boss at the moment! If you're going to win a

:19:20.:19:23.

race, do you think you have to move away from Force India to achieve

:19:23.:19:30.

that? At the moment, I am driving a Force India. I never come into a

:19:30.:19:34.

weekend thinking that you should not win a race. Why should I think

:19:34.:19:38.

different? Malaysia showed that you have to believe that anything is

:19:38.:19:42.

possible. Everything we do before the weekend is going to enable us

:19:42.:19:50.

to challenge. Putting the effort in now makes a difference. Could you

:19:50.:19:55.

see yourself winning a race this year? I could see ourselves on the

:19:55.:20:01.

podium, and we would love to win a race. Sauber should have won a race,

:20:01.:20:10.

Williams have one a race, Force India has to have that opportunity.

:20:10.:20:20.
:20:20.:20:20.

What Department do you work in? Finance. Oh, I love finance. We

:20:20.:20:24.

used to have options... I cannot imagine the kind of comments that

:20:24.:20:28.

you will be getting on our show this weekend. You have got very

:20:28.:20:38.
:20:38.:20:39.

cocky in your old age. 18 months ago, he would be afraid to say boo,

:20:39.:20:43.

but now look at him. Just because he has got a few points in the back.

:20:43.:20:47.

I know the story. The first Jordan car was designed by just three

:20:47.:20:52.

people, and here is one of those three people. What has changed, why

:20:52.:20:56.

do you need all these people? And thinking about the money. Because,

:20:56.:21:03.

as you say, things have technically evolved. In 1991, we designed a

:21:03.:21:07.

glorified Formula 3,000 car. That is where the technology was in

:21:07.:21:12.

those days. Now, we are light years ahead. I would have sacked 90% of

:21:12.:21:17.

the whole lot of you. You are all superfluous, you are not needed,

:21:17.:21:27.
:21:27.:21:27.

and we would have done it with 10% of the people chasing -- 10% of the

:21:27.:21:37.
:21:37.:21:37.

people! A wonderful walk down memory lane for Eddie Jordan. Paul

:21:37.:21:47.
:21:47.:21:51.

di Resta it is with us now. I have got absolutely no idea what you

:21:51.:22:01.
:22:01.:22:01.

guys are saying, with all of this noise. A lot of people have been

:22:01.:22:07.

told not to turn up, obviously, but many of them are here to support us.

:22:07.:22:12.

We know that you had issues yesterday in free practice, and

:22:12.:22:17.

today I think they told you that your KERS was broken on the car.

:22:17.:22:22.

What is the latest? Yes, we have had some issues, we had a KERS

:22:22.:22:28.

failure pretty early. It is difficult to get a judgment on the

:22:28.:22:35.

balance. Hopefully we will be in better shape for qualifying. Paul,

:22:35.:22:43.

we are mid-season now, can you see yourself being at Ferrari or

:22:43.:22:47.

Mercedes next year? I would love to be in a car which is winning races,

:22:47.:22:52.

that is the key. But clearly the results from today and the open

:22:53.:22:57.

coming races will determine that. I am a Force India driver this

:22:57.:23:03.

weekend. That's what I am thinking about. I'm just going to come in

:23:03.:23:08.

here, and I think it is great you mentioned the fans, that is

:23:08.:23:11.

something which is sincere, isn't it? The British fans really have

:23:11.:23:15.

the support they get here. Yes, I don't think there is many places

:23:15.:23:22.

like this, where people would turn up under these circumstances. Their

:23:22.:23:28.

passion for motor racing is something else. Hopefully, the race

:23:28.:23:33.

will determine why they have made the effort to travel. There are

:23:33.:23:38.

about 100 cameras trained on Paul at the moment, trying to get a shot

:23:38.:23:41.

of the man who will be looking to match his sixth place on the grid

:23:41.:23:47.

last year. We hope you go well. My question was, were you his baby sit

:23:47.:23:51.

around the garage? Well, he was just telling me that he used to be

:23:51.:23:58.

the boss. And you did not believe a word of it, did you? You know what,

:23:58.:24:03.

he is still the boss. Have a good weekend, Paul. I think we should

:24:03.:24:13.
:24:13.:24:18.

get to know the fans now, the real stars of the British Grand Prix.

:24:18.:24:26.

Despite the British weather, our enthusiasm is not dampened. No!

:24:26.:24:32.

This man must be either Austrian or German. What is with the there.

:24:32.:24:41.

Macros? Many of us are old enough to remember Woodstock, and this is

:24:41.:24:48.

reminiscent of that. Looking for a free pint later on, but it is not

:24:48.:24:54.

going to happen. We are engulfed with gorgeous girls. All of this

:24:54.:24:58.

does not put you off? No, it is part of coming to Silverstone every

:24:58.:25:07.

year. They are always there, come rain or shine, as it is Eddie

:25:07.:25:11.

normally. This is what is going on in the Force India garage, less

:25:11.:25:20.

than half-an-hour before the start of qualifying. Caterham came in as

:25:21.:25:27.

Lotus a couple of years ago. Their best finish in 2010 was 12th. In

:25:27.:25:32.

2011, it was 13th. But this season, they have promised us that this

:25:33.:25:37.

weekend is the weekend to keep our eyes on the Caterham team. Gary

:25:37.:25:43.

Anderson has been finding out why. All the teams come to a Grand Prix

:25:43.:25:46.

with the ambition of improving the performance of the car. Some things

:25:47.:25:52.

work, some do not, but it is the expectation. Caterham have come

:25:52.:25:57.

with their package for Silverstone. That is the 2012 car, which they

:25:57.:26:03.

used in Valencia. This is the same car, updated aerodynamically to try

:26:03.:26:06.

and improve the performance. have got a new engine cover,

:26:06.:26:09.

helping the flow to the back of the car, the transition into the

:26:09.:26:13.

exhaust area is completely new. We have a central exit here. We have

:26:13.:26:18.

been quite careful on getting a very thin trailing edge. More work

:26:18.:26:22.

on the diffuser, some new details underneath. We have the new front

:26:22.:26:29.

wing here, with some enhancements on it as well. And we have some new

:26:29.:26:32.

bodywork around the front of the side pods, and some nice details on

:26:32.:26:38.

the car which we have tidied up, which, all together, make quite a

:26:38.:26:43.

nice improvement. What would you be looking as an improvement? I will

:26:43.:26:47.

be looking for something like half a second. It will be very difficult

:26:47.:26:51.

for us to analyse all of that, with the weather looking to be as

:26:51.:26:54.

changeable as it is. We will probably start off with the new

:26:54.:26:58.

package on one of the car's only, then hopefully do some analysis and

:26:58.:27:08.
:27:08.:27:34.

pick things out, and go forward on was, we did a lot of comparison

:27:34.:27:38.

work and evaluation of the new pieces, and I am happy to say that

:27:38.:27:46.

we are transferring all of those over to Vitaly's car, because we

:27:46.:27:55.

were more than happy with the results that we saw. Lots and lots

:27:55.:28:05.
:28:05.:28:42.

of upgrades. Bodywork, exhaust information, thanks. He was about

:28:42.:28:47.

seventh quickest, you must be really pleased with that. Yes,

:28:47.:28:52.

clearly, conditions are changeable, so seventh position is I think an

:28:52.:29:00.

indication that we're going in the right direction.

:29:00.:29:10.
:29:10.:29:17.

RADIO: May be the change was not drivers think? To be honest, it is

:29:17.:29:21.

a very green track to start with. Not having run the package in the

:29:21.:29:26.

dry before, we improved during the session, but still more work to do.

:29:26.:29:30.

The back of the car is working really well, we just need to get

:29:30.:29:34.

the front dialled in. Good luck for the weekend. The thank you very

:29:34.:29:39.

much. Of course, this is their home Grand

:29:39.:29:43.

Prix, the race that they have said they are going to be competitive in.

:29:43.:29:46.

You can see the intricacy of his front wing, the amount of work that

:29:46.:29:52.

has gone into it. They said, this represents a four or five weeks

:29:52.:30:02.

work. How much has the sport moved on, Eddie? I am a bit old fashioned,

:30:02.:30:06.

this should be banned. This is really not Formula 1 in my opinion.

:30:06.:30:11.

But maybe everybody else has their own view. Do you not think it looks

:30:11.:30:17.

beautiful? No, it is a mess. The parts are beautifully made, but to

:30:17.:30:20.

expect a team to spend... You cannot imagine the amount of time

:30:20.:30:24.

that has been spent in the wind Tunnel, designing it, drawing it,

:30:24.:30:29.

for me, it is unnecessary, it is not required. What we need is the

:30:29.:30:34.

racing. This is confusion. disagree, I think it looks lovely.

:30:34.:30:39.

But the message from Caterham is clear - it is not just, we're going

:30:39.:30:43.

to be fast this weekend, it is also, Toro Rosso, we are coming to get

:30:43.:30:53.
:30:53.:30:59.

from Caterham, how much are you as a team and you as a driver looking

:30:59.:31:04.

at the teams around do in terms of their development? I just focus on

:31:04.:31:09.

what I am doing. There are some people in the team scouting and

:31:09.:31:14.

seeing what is going on. It does not mean much. It they have

:31:14.:31:18.

something here or there, it is not going to change my performance. It

:31:18.:31:24.

is best with my experience, just to focus on myself. The you live near

:31:25.:31:30.

by, you are local from Milton Keynes. You have a better

:31:30.:31:34.

understanding of the weather than most, is this an opportunity or

:31:34.:31:40.

would you prefer it to be one or the other? One or the other is nice.

:31:40.:31:44.

But yesterday we were more competitive in the wet. The rain is

:31:44.:31:49.

coming down now and I am not too disappointed to see it. As long as

:31:49.:31:55.

it is constant, everybody wants that rather than a roll of the dice.

:31:55.:32:01.

Just quickly, you are normally a bit happier, have you had a bit of

:32:01.:32:09.

a bad session? Now, between P3 and qualifying, it is just a couple of

:32:09.:32:19.
:32:19.:32:20.

hours. We have to Lionel -- final tweaks to make for the weekend.

:32:20.:32:24.

needs to take it seriously, he has not scored any point since

:32:24.:32:29.

Australia. But some people are just enjoying themselves rather than

:32:29.:32:35.

take it seriously. House special is it to see that? The fans don't know

:32:35.:32:40.

when to stop. It is like a, a ball for them. It could be a rock

:32:40.:32:46.

concert, it could be anything. Every year the fans at Silverstone

:32:46.:32:54.

surprise us even more. They have three British drivers to cheer

:32:54.:33:00.

about. It is a magic time for Formula One. One man who loves

:33:00.:33:05.

racing it is Mark Webber, this place does feel like home. Mainly

:33:05.:33:15.
:33:15.:33:17.

because the only lives 25 miles away. -- he only lives.

:33:17.:33:27.
:33:27.:33:28.

Let's talk about the season. Watch the speed camera. I am doing 30 mph.

:33:28.:33:34.

Hopefully you will be going faster on Saturday and Sunday. Valencia

:33:34.:33:38.

sums up Formula One for you at the moment? He would have thought of

:33:38.:33:43.

that before the race? The top three on the grid did not score points.

:33:43.:33:47.

Other people trying to make strategies work and not getting

:33:47.:33:53.

home on them. Michael and I were able to capitalise. I would have

:33:53.:33:58.

liked a smoother run here and there but I got a Monaco a victory. I

:33:58.:34:02.

have a chunk of points to launch into the next part of the

:34:02.:34:10.

Championship. Silverstone has been a bit prickly the you? We all want

:34:10.:34:18.

to do well. In 2010, it was well documented I was not happy that

:34:18.:34:24.

they but I went on to win the Grand Prix.

:34:24.:34:33.

TEAM RADIO: Can you manage a smile now? Last year, I had the race

:34:34.:34:38.

called off. TEAM RADIO: You need to maintain

:34:38.:34:47.

the gap. As a team we have learned. Let's talk about next season, where

:34:47.:34:55.

do you see yourself driving? It is getting closer to decision time.

:34:55.:35:04.

There has been some talk between the teams. I am getting closer to

:35:04.:35:11.

making that decision. Have you been speaking to other teams? There has

:35:11.:35:16.

been some discussions, yes, but it has been pretty light. Even at Red

:35:16.:35:22.

Bull, it is not a foregone conclusion yet. I need to keep

:35:22.:35:26.

performing and that is important also for the teams I would drive

:35:26.:35:33.

for. That would mean I am motivated and hungry. I had better go and

:35:33.:35:39.

find some work. Sebastian Vettel said he does not get a say in who

:35:39.:35:44.

his team mate is at Red Bull. Fernando Alonso said he does get to

:35:45.:35:54.
:35:55.:35:55.

save his team mate is at Ferrari? know Fernando Alonso very well. The

:35:55.:35:59.

dynamics of being team-mates is different. I have never seen any

:35:59.:36:05.

team mates get on, it does not happen. It all kicks off. They have

:36:05.:36:10.

come together, what was going on there? We had just seen Mark Webber

:36:10.:36:15.

making his way over to the back of the garage. Christian Horner, the

:36:15.:36:20.

team principal is with us. Mark Webber said, I have got to go out

:36:20.:36:24.

and find some work. That makes it sound like there is no work at Red

:36:24.:36:28.

Bull for him? That is you interpreting it in a different way.

:36:28.:36:33.

He is keen to stay with the team, we are happy with his performance.

:36:34.:36:39.

We will be sitting down in the next few weeks to talk about the future.

:36:39.:36:43.

You would like him to stay? He has done a great job for us. As usual

:36:43.:36:53.
:36:53.:36:53.

we will sit down and go through it over the next few weeks. What I am

:36:53.:37:01.

holding, this is normally sitting around the driver up here somewhere.

:37:01.:37:08.

We have had an overwhelming response from the public. Everyone

:37:08.:37:13.

has paid 15 euros to have faces put on there. You are on their a few

:37:13.:37:19.

times. Fernando Alonso is riding on the car. It is a great initiative

:37:19.:37:24.

and raised a lot of money, a million Euros for this charity to

:37:24.:37:30.

hopefully find a cure for spinal cord damage. Fernando Alonso this

:37:30.:37:39.

weekend is driving for Ferrari - Red Bull. He is on it and not in it.

:37:39.:37:42.

What do you expect to go in qualifying? Unlike Wimbledon we

:37:42.:37:47.

don't have a roof. It is a typical British summer. The Sunshine and

:37:47.:37:56.

rain. Eddie is about to be arrested. Why are you being arrested? I have

:37:56.:38:03.

never been arrested by two more beautiful women. Why are you

:38:03.:38:10.

arresting him? Crimes against fashion. Off he goes down the

:38:10.:38:15.

paddock. Let's speak to a man who has not committed any crimes

:38:15.:38:24.

against speed. Lewis Hamilton. As we could not take Hamilton to the

:38:24.:38:34.

fans, we decided away to take the fans to Hamilton.

:38:34.:38:44.
:38:44.:38:49.

We will take a quick pick at Twitter. Get some questions for you.

:38:49.:38:54.

You were writing so quickly. While we're waiting for the messages to

:38:54.:38:59.

come in, you have some fans at a primary school near by. We will

:38:59.:39:05.

ring them. Emma's be nice to know you are inspiring young kids?

:39:05.:39:11.

never thought people would be looking up to me. Hello. It is

:39:12.:39:21.

Lewis Hamilton here. ALL: cheering. Hello everyone.

:39:21.:39:28.

How did you become a racing driver? When I was your age I started in

:39:28.:39:33.

the go-karting. It started as a hobby and then I got good at it.

:39:33.:39:40.

Then it turned into a serious hobby and I ended up in Formula One.

:39:40.:39:46.

do get the class to wish him best wishes for the weekend.

:39:46.:39:51.

I did not realise you would be in the class with the children.

:39:51.:39:57.

seven years old, they cannot be in the class of their own.

:39:57.:40:03.

How opposed would you be on a musical on your life story? Let's

:40:03.:40:11.

move on. What will the weather do for you?

:40:11.:40:19.

like it when it has been wet and it goes to dry. That is best for me.

:40:19.:40:26.

When you win on Sunday, we used stop out on track like Fernando

:40:26.:40:35.

Alonso? You always get in trouble. You can take the little fine. You

:40:35.:40:42.

do it, I will pay it. Sounds good. If a snake was eating your right

:40:42.:40:50.

arm, and a lion was eating your left arm, which one would you stop

:40:50.:40:56.

first? I think I would hit the line with the snake. Is he contemplating

:40:56.:41:01.

a move from McLaren next season? have never been in a position or

:41:01.:41:05.

when my contract has come to an end. This is my first contract which is

:41:05.:41:13.

coming to an end. You have to understand what you want to do

:41:13.:41:17.

moving forward. I am happy where I am. Are you getting what you need

:41:17.:41:25.

from McLaren? They are fantastic. I get their support every year. On a

:41:25.:41:30.

personal level, they are there for you. The very caring and flexible

:41:30.:41:37.

on certain things. Life in racing, it is not where you start, it is

:41:37.:41:42.

where you finish. Thanks for the words of wisdom. I am older than

:41:42.:41:47.

you, I was six when you were born. One thing about Lewis Hamilton, he

:41:47.:41:50.

is driving with a smile on his face and that has not always been the

:41:50.:41:56.

case? He has got confidence. He believes he has turned the tables

:41:56.:42:00.

on Jenson Button, perhaps. P has got the team behind him. They have

:42:00.:42:05.

had some little problems, but he does believe he can pull off the

:42:05.:42:09.

world Championship. Caterham believe they have a car capable of

:42:09.:42:13.

getting them into the second part of qualifying. They have been

:42:13.:42:17.

honest and so they think this weekend they will find half a

:42:17.:42:21.

second improvement at which is a huge amount in Formula One. You

:42:21.:42:24.

remember the days when you were bringing up graves and thought he

:42:24.:42:28.

would blow away the rest of the paddock, how exciting is it? Best

:42:28.:42:35.

upgrades. It is hugely exciting. It flowers all the way through, even

:42:35.:42:39.

to the sponsors. They can be upbeat about things. You need Updates to

:42:39.:42:43.

make sure the motivation within the team is successful. There is plenty

:42:43.:42:48.

of attention, photographers are India, and two of familiar faces

:42:48.:42:54.

for you? Mark Smith was part of the original Jordan car and he is

:42:54.:43:00.

technical director at Caterham. you work with John at Jordan?

:43:00.:43:05.

they have got themselves together, it is a surprise. These new Updates,

:43:05.:43:10.

can you see yourself getting into the second qualifying? I don't want

:43:10.:43:15.

to comment specifically about one event. We are making progress.

:43:15.:43:19.

Updates we have here are significant. You have seen the

:43:19.:43:22.

weather, in terms of optimising the car around that, we will have to

:43:22.:43:27.

see what happens in the next hour. John, give us an idea of the

:43:27.:43:33.

atmosphere? We had a good day out in Valencia, lots of smiles around

:43:33.:43:43.
:43:43.:43:45.

the garage getting our driver into Q2. There are plenty of ways in

:43:45.:43:49.

enjoying qualifying and seeing how Caterham get on. But this is the

:43:49.:43:56.

way you can enjoy the action. You can ride on board with various cars.

:43:56.:44:01.

You can go online and press the red button. You can ride on board with

:44:01.:44:05.

your chosen driver. There has been some dramatic action so far this

:44:05.:44:15.
:44:15.:44:18.

weekend. It is an upgrade, you can enjoy all the action on your mobile

:44:18.:44:21.

phone. On the website, you can keep up-to-date with the latest news.

:44:21.:44:26.

This is what the BBC play it gives you. You can run wind, you can

:44:26.:44:32.

choose chapters. We are hoping, gentlemen, best of luck Caterham

:44:32.:44:36.

can do the business. You have worked so hard. You are all very

:44:36.:44:40.

excited and we don't want to mention it too much, it would teach

:44:40.:44:45.

Eddie a thing or two. He has described his team as the biggest

:44:45.:44:50.

disappointment in Formula One this season. It is time for the first

:44:50.:44:59.

part of qualifying. Let's see how it all unfolds with David and then.

:44:59.:45:09.
:45:09.:45:20.

Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, the British Grand

:45:20.:45:27.

Prix, at Silverstone. This year, it is the 9th race in the calendar. We

:45:27.:45:30.

are in the heart of the British countryside, and in the heart of

:45:30.:45:35.

the season, where the nitty-gritty of point-scoring could well

:45:35.:45:39.

determine the outcome of the Championship. We have gone from the

:45:39.:45:48.

street circuits to one of the faster circuits on the schedule.

:45:48.:45:52.

Cars are cornering at speeds of 180 miles an hour on some of these

:45:52.:45:57.

corners. David, you know all too well, it is a fast track.

:45:57.:46:02.

DAVID COULTHARD: It is indeed. We talk about speeds of 200 miles an

:46:02.:46:07.

hour at places like Spa and Monza, but that is not what gives the

:46:07.:46:11.

driver the thrill, it is attacking corners at great speed which does

:46:11.:46:19.

that, at places like Becketts. Nigel Mansell famously said he was

:46:19.:46:23.

pulling 12 G through that section. I am not so sure. But nonetheless,

:46:23.:46:27.

that is what the drivers are looking for, that is what gets

:46:27.:46:33.

their focus, and that is when the Grand Prix cars really come alive.

:46:33.:46:39.

We do have light rain, however. It has been dry all morning,

:46:39.:46:46.

throughout free practice, but right now, it is beginning to fall. Track

:46:46.:46:50.

temperatures, much lower than they would be at most other circuits.

:46:50.:46:57.

Our man in the pits, of course, is Gary Anderson. Any rain where you

:46:57.:47:02.

are at the moment? Yes, it is pretty light, but enough to make

:47:02.:47:06.

the track really slippery. In conditions like this, you have got

:47:07.:47:11.

to be on the track, because it will be constantly changing. It will

:47:11.:47:15.

either be at its best at the start of the session, or at the end of

:47:15.:47:20.

the session. Either way, you have got to be on the track. Any car

:47:20.:47:30.
:47:30.:47:35.

still in the garage, they would be making a mistake. As Gary mentions,

:47:35.:47:41.

you have got to be out on the track. This is a 20 minute session, so

:47:41.:47:46.

you're not worried about the fuel. Yes, it is a factor in the wet,

:47:46.:47:53.

just as much as in the dry, but not as much so. But you want to make

:47:53.:47:58.

sure that you have got enough fuel on board to do the laps, because it

:47:58.:48:01.

could just be that one extra lap which makes the difference between

:48:01.:48:05.

getting into the next part of qualifying, or languishing at the

:48:05.:48:10.

back. A quick reminder on the Championship points, as you can

:48:10.:48:20.
:48:20.:48:21.

see... It is not a huge margin at the top, but by becoming the first

:48:21.:48:24.

person to win twice this season, Alonso has got a bigger lead than

:48:25.:48:29.

anyone else has had this year. Lotus, just holding on to that

:48:29.:48:34.

third place, they were hurt by losing Grosjean from the race in

:48:35.:48:38.

Valencia. RADIO: The weather is getting worse,

:48:38.:48:48.

we will go straightaway. We can do five timed laps. That is a good

:48:48.:48:52.

point, getting down to the end of the pit lane and being one of the

:48:52.:48:58.

first out on to the circuit is always crucial. It is indeed. These

:48:58.:49:03.

cars are capable of idling for well over a minute. You can see Paul di

:49:03.:49:07.

Resta going for it straightaway, on the intermediate tyres. There are

:49:07.:49:12.

not enough puddles to justify going on the full wet tyres. There will

:49:12.:49:16.

be a flurry of activity, as we do the countdown, with about 40

:49:16.:49:22.

seconds to go. Look at the queue, the most expensive traffic jam you

:49:22.:49:28.

will see anywhere in the world. yes, everybody desperate to get out

:49:28.:49:36.

and get a clear run. Lewis Hamilton has had a very good record against

:49:36.:49:46.
:49:46.:49:48.

his teammate so far this year. He is up to 8-0 at the moment. The

:49:48.:49:57.

same scoreline between Pedro de la Rosa and Karthikeyan as well.

:49:57.:50:00.

teams will have had to make a pressure adjustment to take into

:50:00.:50:04.

account that they will be losing vital temperature from the tyres in

:50:04.:50:08.

sitting at the end of the pit lane. I suspect they will have allowed

:50:08.:50:16.

for that. RADIO: We have a problem with KERS,

:50:16.:50:26.
:50:26.:50:28.

you have no KERS, we have to do clicks rearward 10 on brake balance.

:50:28.:50:33.

That will be costing him vital time, around this very long circuit. So,

:50:33.:50:36.

Kimi Raikkonen already with a handicap. But this first lap that

:50:36.:50:42.

they do could well be the quickest lap of the session. As I was saying,

:50:42.:50:46.

they will have put a bit more air pressure into the tyre to maintain

:50:46.:50:54.

ride height. BEN EDWARDS: Yes, a course,

:50:54.:51:01.

straightaway, we are on to the intermediate tyre. The full wet

:51:01.:51:04.

tyre was being used on Friday, but the intermediate is a very good

:51:04.:51:10.

tyre. That is what all the teams will be out on. That problem with

:51:10.:51:17.

KERS, the energy recovery system, for Kimi Raikkonen...

:51:17.:51:21.

RADIO: We need to find ourselves a bit of a gap, we need to keep

:51:21.:51:26.

pushing at all times. DAVID COULTHARD: It looks like it

:51:26.:51:29.

is raining much heavier at the back of the circuit, which used to be

:51:29.:51:38.

the front of the circuit, when the pit lane ran down into Copse.

:51:38.:51:41.

Kovalainen trying to go round the outside of his teammate, and

:51:41.:51:45.

running out of road. It is all going to be about trying to find

:51:45.:51:54.

some clear space. This was pulled a racer for -- this was Paul di Resta

:51:54.:51:59.

or at Becketts. So, difficult conditions, as they try to get heat

:51:59.:52:09.
:52:09.:52:14.

into these tyres. Because of the wet surface, the race control has

:52:14.:52:21.

deemed that they are not able to use the DRS. It was a failure of

:52:21.:52:25.

DRS which hurt Mark Webber so much in qualifying last time out, but

:52:25.:52:31.

this time, none of them are allowed to use that system. Kobayashi did a

:52:31.:52:34.

lot of laps yesterday in free practice, so he has got a good feel

:52:34.:52:42.

for the circuit, when it has been raining. He has indeed.

:52:42.:52:48.

RADIO: Conditions are going to get worse, we need to nail these first

:52:48.:52:51.

few laps. DAVID COULTHARD: Kobayashi will be

:52:51.:52:56.

a bit tentative as he tries to get heat in the tyres. In free practice,

:52:56.:53:03.

he was definitely performing well, but look how gingerly he is going

:53:03.:53:10.

through Goulding suddenly going through Becketts. Really tricky

:53:10.:53:15.

conditions for these drivers. This could be the only lap which makes a

:53:15.:53:25.
:53:25.:53:27.

difference. When I look at the train of cars, bringing up the rear

:53:27.:53:30.

will be Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher, so we have got some big

:53:30.:53:34.

names at the back of this chain of traffic. Kamui Kobayashi qualified

:53:34.:53:39.

really well here at Silverstone last year. He was eighth on the

:53:39.:53:45.

grid. That is his initial time, which is faster than they were

:53:45.:53:48.

doing in the full wet conditions on Friday. On board with Kimi

:53:48.:53:51.

Raikkonen, and you can see they are Raikkonen, and you can see they are

:53:51.:53:54.

all bunching up. He almost made contact with his team make there,

:53:54.:54:04.
:54:04.:54:08.

who was trying to get past Perez, I think. This is the argy-bargy to

:54:08.:54:16.

try to find space. He was trying to hold back to get a gap, but

:54:16.:54:26.
:54:26.:54:35.

have been like. Hulkenberg has gone fourth. If it is still raining hard,

:54:35.:54:39.

will they go any quicker than that? Michael Schumacher has just gone

:54:39.:54:44.

fastest! Although he was later out than many of the others, he has put

:54:44.:54:48.

a good lap in straightaway, and Fernando Alonso has been pushed

:54:48.:54:52.

back to fourth. Rosberg has gone second.

:54:52.:55:00.

RADIO: We need it to be done on the first two laps. Maybe this next lap

:55:00.:55:05.

will be another chance. Alonso is up on the first section.

:55:05.:55:11.

GARY ANDERSON: Those guys who went out early, they had been sitting in

:55:11.:55:15.

the pit lane, losing tyre temperature. Those guys who went

:55:15.:55:20.

out later, like Michael Schumacher, they kept tyre temperature up. If

:55:20.:55:25.

it was me, I would have gone out later, that way you can really nail

:55:25.:55:35.
:55:35.:55:37.

the tyres while they are still warm. Alonso, David, looking to be on a

:55:37.:55:42.

good lap. DAVID COULTHARD: I think what Gary

:55:42.:55:47.

said is absolutely crucial, about maintaining that a budget.

:55:47.:55:53.

RADIO: Michael, we think four or five minutes of light rain, so the

:55:54.:55:59.

track will be at its best in these next moments.

:55:59.:56:04.

BEN EDWARDS: Maldonado has gone second. Remember, seven go out

:56:04.:56:07.

after this first part of qualifying, that is what we are really looking

:56:07.:56:12.

at, those who will not make it through. At the moment, Webber and

:56:12.:56:16.

Vettel are both in the drop zone, would you believe it? Hamilton has

:56:16.:56:26.
:56:26.:56:42.

Meanwhile, Button is in the drop zone. Meanwhile, Ricardo is

:56:42.:56:48.

lighting up the timing screens, and Massa has just gone fastest of all.

:56:48.:56:51.

They are trying to find their way through these ever-changing

:56:51.:56:59.

conditions. There is no rain at all up in our commentary box. Look how

:56:59.:57:03.

visibly wet the track surface is as they go through Copse corner.

:57:03.:57:07.

Jenson Button, still running in some traffic, he needs to try to

:57:07.:57:14.

get some clear space. RADIO: The track is drying out.

:57:14.:57:20.

Make a gap to the front. The track is actually getting drier,

:57:20.:57:24.

according to Sergio Perez. With more cars going round, that helps

:57:24.:57:30.

as well. Michael Schumacher down in tenth at the moment. Kobayashi is

:57:31.:57:34.

fastest in the Sauber. It could be one of those sessions when you just

:57:34.:57:38.

keep going round and round, and hope that you get the best lap at

:57:38.:57:41.

the end. DAVID COULTHARD: That's why you

:57:41.:57:47.

heard to fuel the car for the whole session. Of course, you will get a

:57:47.:57:56.

weight penalty, but enables you to get as many laps in as possible.

:57:56.:58:02.

Let's see what Lewis Hamilton does. He was fastest on his previous lap,

:58:02.:58:12.
:58:12.:58:17.

Toro Rosso did a lot of laps with both of their drivers in wet

:58:17.:58:21.

practice on Friday, and it seems to be helping them at the moment, with

:58:21.:58:24.

both of their drivers being higher up the list then you might have

:58:24.:58:32.

expected. It is a question for the team, do you compromise your dry

:58:32.:58:38.

set up, running the risk that if it dries out, you could be struggling?

:58:38.:58:42.

Toro Rosso have been struggling to deliver performance in the dry this

:58:42.:58:46.

year, so it makes sense to me that they would say, let's gamble that

:58:46.:58:51.

we are going to have a wet weekend. The top teams need to try to cover

:58:51.:58:57.

all bases. They need to split the set-ups, if they can get one of the

:58:57.:59:04.

drivers to accept haven't a compromise. -- having a compromise.

:59:04.:59:12.

Hamilton has backed off. So, we are getting part of the story right now.

:59:12.:59:20.

Look who has gone fastest, Jean- Eric Vergne! Indeed, so, Toro Rosso

:59:20.:59:30.
:59:30.:59:36.

have got the car working we have over 10 minutes to go in

:59:36.:59:41.

this session. Jenson Button is in the drop zone at the moment. He is

:59:41.:59:49.

looking better. Rosberg was so quick earlier on his in 17th place.

:59:49.:59:53.

The teams have to assess the conditions. Drivers will have a big

:59:53.:00:02.

say in this. But sent his 15th. Not as far up as he would have liked.

:00:02.:00:09.

Maldonado has just done a 1:47. That will play a factor in this

:00:09.:00:16.

qualifying. Plenty of time to go, over nine minutes. We will find at

:00:16.:00:20.

soon if the teams have fuelled a long enough to allow the drivers to

:00:20.:00:25.

stay out there or whether they will have to top up the fuel system.

:00:25.:00:30.

are on board with Kimi Raikkonen. Gary Anderson, what would be the

:00:30.:00:35.

transition ragtime where they think we need to put up slicks on?

:00:35.:00:43.

Usually about 10 to 12 seconds. That would be a 1:43, maybe 44, but

:00:43.:00:48.

it depends if it is patchy. Only the driver knows which part of the

:00:48.:00:55.

tracks is really wet. We are not a million miles away from that, nine

:00:55.:01:02.

seconds to go. Much we will keep an eye on that. David, as Gary was

:01:02.:01:08.

saying, your decision making process at this time, your feedback

:01:08.:01:12.

to the team is crucial question mark this is where it needs to be

:01:12.:01:16.

led from the cockpit. They have weathermen stationed up wins, but

:01:17.:01:23.

the driver cannot be aware of that. If it is a shared responsibility

:01:23.:01:29.

during a normal running where there are changing conditions, the driver

:01:30.:01:35.

has to take responsibility. The team do not know how the tyres are,

:01:35.:01:40.

is the track to dry to work? All the engineers and decision-makers

:01:40.:01:45.

are sitting just below us. They cannot judge how slippy the

:01:45.:01:54.

trackers. Perez has gone fast as for the moment, so you have the

:01:54.:02:00.

Sauber cars one and two. Mark Webber always goes well at

:02:00.:02:10.
:02:10.:02:13.

Silverstone. But he is 17. TEAM RADIO: Do not use DRS. Do not

:02:13.:02:21.

use DRS. Lewis has not come in and changed his tyres, DRS is disabled

:02:21.:02:28.

and won't be enabled until the race director give the message. It is

:02:28.:02:33.

likely were ring he would be distracted to ask that question.

:02:33.:02:38.

is only about 15 seconds off a dry where the time. We are getting to

:02:38.:02:44.

that time, but there is some drizzle around. It does look as

:02:44.:02:50.

though it is raining slightly on that part of the circuit. Another

:02:50.:02:57.

bit of traffic from the Caterham. Alonso is a winding it up for

:02:57.:03:02.

another lap. He is not looking too bad at the moment. It is the first

:03:02.:03:06.

17 who go through this part of qualifying with just over six

:03:06.:03:14.

minutes to go. Sauber and Caterham both have dry tyres available. The

:03:14.:03:20.

Sauber making the transition and putting slicks on, I believe. Gary,

:03:20.:03:26.

is this good timing from Sauber's point of view? They will have to do

:03:26.:03:31.

these next few laps very carefully. It will get quicker, but it is

:03:31.:03:41.
:03:41.:03:43.

about survival. Sergio Perez has also come in, so both Sauber are on

:03:43.:03:51.

the slicks. TEAM RADIO: Seven minutes to go,

:03:51.:04:00.

Mark, seven minutes. A little bit of a reign at Maggots and Stoke.

:04:00.:04:05.

used to have a small clock in my cockpit so I did not have to ask

:04:06.:04:10.

that. And very cheap and efficient way of not having to trouble

:04:10.:04:18.

yourself with a radio conversation. Perez and Kobayashi are both going

:04:18.:04:27.

quickest. It may be a punt for them because they won't go that much

:04:27.:04:35.

quicker on their intermediate. It is the middle sector through Copse

:04:35.:04:40.

and Becketts of that look pretty damn. Those slick tyres will lose

:04:40.:04:49.

temperature so quickly. We talk about the cooling temperatures of

:04:49.:04:56.

these tyres. Kobayashi is four seconds down on the middle splits

:04:56.:05:01.

on his slicks. But he has a few laps. If he can keep the heat in

:05:01.:05:08.

his tyres, he will be OK. If he loses it, it does not matter how

:05:08.:05:14.

many laps he does. We will lose seven cars in this process. A

:05:14.:05:20.

Vettel tops the times at the moment. Jenson Button coming around to try

:05:20.:05:25.

and improve. He is still only 18th and that is a surprise Jenson

:05:25.:05:30.

Button has not gone quicker as yet. Hamilton is not that much ahead of

:05:30.:05:38.

him. Coming in 14th place. We are on board with Rosberg, no window

:05:38.:05:43.

wiper on his visor or on the camera. That is what he is getting up from

:05:43.:05:53.
:05:53.:05:53.

the cockpit. He is in 17th place. A little bit of work to be done. He

:05:53.:05:59.

is on the cusp of the drop zone. Sauber have decided to get back

:05:59.:06:04.

onto the intermediate tyres, slick experiment and it did not work. Now,

:06:04.:06:10.

you have to deliver it on the intermediate. Do you put a fresh

:06:10.:06:16.

set of intermediates on? TEAM RADIO: Paul, background. We

:06:16.:06:23.

will need an almighty time-lapse. Yes, Paul di Resta is 15th. It is

:06:23.:06:28.

all going to change in the closing moments of this session. Just

:06:28.:06:38.
:06:38.:06:41.

watching Timo Glock heading down the straight. He is in the Marussia.

:06:41.:06:45.

Good news for those who have been out on the intermediate saw the

:06:45.:06:48.

whole session. Jean-Eric Vergne has just gone fastest in the middle

:06:49.:06:56.

sector. It shows the middle sector is drying up. Is it too dry as BC a

:06:56.:07:00.

power slide from Timo Glock as he runs wide as he comes out of the

:07:00.:07:08.

last part of Club corner. Is the overheating the intermediate? Is it

:07:08.:07:13.

blistering on the rear tyres? This is a replay of Jenson Button. It

:07:13.:07:19.

does not look good. Jean-Eric Vergne has just concluded a his lap

:07:19.:07:26.

and he has also gone quickest of all in the middle sector. That is

:07:26.:07:36.
:07:36.:07:46.

drifting from CROWD GROANS. Jenson Button is still in the drop

:07:46.:07:56.
:07:56.:07:57.

zone. He could be in trouble. TEAM RADIO: We need three more

:07:57.:08:03.

tenths of a second. What about that for pressure. The British Grand

:08:03.:08:07.

Prix, so far he has not finished higher than fourth place for a

:08:07.:08:12.

start it he is normally the master of changing conditions. But in this

:08:12.:08:17.

qualifying session it is all about getting a clear lap, judging

:08:17.:08:21.

exactly. Paul di Resta is another man who has the pressure on him,

:08:21.:08:26.

coming in in 15th place. He has not managed to improve on his first

:08:26.:08:33.

sector. His middle sector has come up Greenwich says it is a personal

:08:33.:08:42.

best. Will this improve his over all lap time. -- come up green,

:08:42.:08:50.

which says it is a personal best. big slide from Paul di Resta.

:08:50.:08:56.

Waterlog, so you have to be careful not to run a wheel over the edge.

:08:56.:09:01.

Di Resta trying to get himself into that position of a little more

:09:01.:09:05.

safety. I am not sure it will make a difference. Kimi Raikkonen has

:09:05.:09:15.
:09:15.:09:28.

session. Half a minute ago and Jenson Button is on a better lap.

:09:28.:09:33.

It should see him improve. McKee has got to go on to that time laugh.

:09:33.:09:38.

He has got to now do the lap when it counts. He has gone over the

:09:38.:09:45.

line with 20 seconds to go. If he does not get off 18th place, he

:09:45.:09:50.

will be at the back of the grid. Rosberg is likely to beat one of

:09:51.:09:57.

the ones to drop out. He is in the pit in 17th place. If Jenson Button

:09:57.:10:04.

manages to do the lap, Rosberg will be one of the big scalps dropping

:10:04.:10:09.

out on the first part of qualifying. Jenson Button cannot make a mistake,

:10:10.:10:14.

maybe use different lines to find the grip. Aim for the dry patches

:10:14.:10:20.

as much as you can. This is a sacrificial set of intermediate. It

:10:20.:10:26.

is all about this single lap. If he does it, he goes through to the

:10:26.:10:32.

next part of qualifying. It is the second longest lap at Silverstone.

:10:32.:10:38.

It takes a bit of time to get a round. First sector time looking

:10:38.:10:46.

good, a personal best. Will it get him above Rosberg? It is the target

:10:46.:10:54.

to the next split. He is up and Rosberg time. Somebody is spinning.

:10:54.:11:00.

It is Timo Glock. The it happened in front of the commentary box, we

:11:00.:11:05.

have not seen that yet. Be looked like he'd come in contact with the

:11:05.:11:15.
:11:15.:11:17.

wall. The yellow flags should allow Jenson Button to get to the line.

:11:17.:11:23.

But in out of the last corner - who will he get himself up? No, he is

:11:23.:11:29.

still 18th! He has not got through to Q2. Did he have to back off on

:11:29.:11:35.

Club corner? It is normal the ozone well-staffed before the incident.

:11:35.:11:40.

The marshalling system is not a equidistant between those zones.

:11:40.:11:45.

The yellow flag has been weighed just at the exit of Club corner. --

:11:45.:11:51.

waved. My gut feeling is, it might have been worth a punt going for it

:11:51.:11:57.

and then talk to the stewards afterwards. Timo Glock spins off

:11:57.:12:05.

his rear tyres. He goes on to a green painted surface, it is not

:12:05.:12:13.

grass. By the time he realises, it has gone too far. They sigh of

:12:13.:12:17.

relief from Marussia, he did not make contact with the walls. Those

:12:17.:12:24.

front wings are expensive. Coasting round now, one of the heroes. But

:12:24.:12:34.
:12:34.:12:35.

Jenson Button is out. Petrov and Kovalainen.

:12:35.:12:43.

TEAM RADIO: I am afraid we are out. It is amazing how much more grip I

:12:44.:12:53.

had on this tier. So the woes continue for Jenson Button. This is

:12:53.:12:58.

not a circuit he has excelled. His best result has been forced. He

:12:58.:13:02.

will be very disappointed and Nico Rosberg showing a bit of pace out

:13:02.:13:11.

there at times. We are joined by Vitaly Petrov. Caterham were

:13:11.:13:16.

desperately hoping both the cars would make it through to the second

:13:16.:13:22.

part of qualifying on pure pace. But Petrov has a qualified his

:13:22.:13:25.

team-mate for the second time this season. You must be pleased with

:13:25.:13:35.
:13:35.:13:36.

your performance? First time I have managed to beat my team-mate. The

:13:36.:13:40.

package is working. Been looks like the team is getting positive. I

:13:40.:13:46.

know conditions were not fantastic, but everyone was on the same. It

:13:46.:13:54.

was very difficult to drive. The tyres are getting better, so you do

:13:54.:13:58.

not know how much you can push. Talking about tyres, did you think

:13:58.:14:05.

this is the time for slick tyres? think you know more than me. Every

:14:05.:14:10.

second lap my engineer asked me if we were ready to push the dry tyre.

:14:10.:14:16.

I said we were not ready. We took the right decision to put two sets

:14:16.:14:21.

of intermediate Bostock that they are working very well. I managed to

:14:21.:14:27.

continue and go quicker. Congratulations for your qualifying.

:14:27.:14:31.

Give us an idea of how much conversation there was going on in

:14:31.:14:40.

the cockpit. Are you pretty much in I have to ask him not to talk to me

:14:40.:14:46.

too much. Sometimes he disturbs me when I go into the fast corner. But

:14:46.:14:51.

this time we did have a lot of discussions about which tyres we

:14:51.:14:57.

wanted to use. It was all during the fastest lap. Congratulations,

:14:57.:15:02.

we will let you face the rest of the media. Thanks for letting us

:15:02.:15:07.

into your garage. I want to speak to John he spoke to earlier. What

:15:07.:15:11.

was fascinating for Eddie and I, with six minutes to go you came

:15:11.:15:16.

over and said we have made a big decision you are going to go slick

:15:16.:15:23.

on Kovalainen's car. But then you send him out on intermediate. Why

:15:23.:15:33.
:15:33.:15:36.

here, and we could see the weather clearly getting worse, so we

:15:36.:15:41.

thought it was not quite going to work for us. On a different day, we

:15:41.:15:44.

would have rolled the dice and seeing what happened. But you just

:15:44.:15:47.

have to look at who got knocked out, it was not easy conditions for

:15:47.:15:52.

anyone, and we had not really run the new package in these mixed

:15:52.:15:59.

conditions before. So, unlucky, I would say. How many other teams -

:15:59.:16:04.

obviously you're monitoring the other cars, your opposition, about

:16:04.:16:09.

when they changed over that tyres - was that your decision? For us, it

:16:09.:16:13.

is very much a driver decision, clearly with the engineer, but

:16:13.:16:17.

ultimately the driver. They have the best field, they are the person

:16:17.:16:21.

out on the track, who understands where the grip is. Heikki was happy

:16:21.:16:26.

to go for six, but in the end, it was his call. I would say looking

:16:26.:16:31.

outside the front here, it was probably the right one.

:16:31.:16:35.

absolutely was, because we can see the rain coming down now. Thank you

:16:35.:16:41.

very much for joining us. You will know from experience, Eddie, how

:16:41.:16:45.

difficult it is to make these kind of conditions. We have seen wet and

:16:45.:16:49.

dry conditions throughout the weekend. It is now very much wet

:16:49.:16:55.

for the second part of qualifying. They are all keen to get up there.

:16:55.:17:01.

BEN EDWARDS: Another queue at the end of the pit lane, as the second

:17:01.:17:06.

part of qualifying gets under way. The teams are not lined up as we

:17:06.:17:10.

are accustomed to seeing them. Here at Silverstone, you have got that

:17:10.:17:16.

big wall, and the fans from the grandstand cannot CVs pit garages

:17:17.:17:24.

at the end, so they decided to put the top teams in the middle.

:17:24.:17:30.

DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, you get you so used to seeing particular teams

:17:30.:17:34.

at one particular end of the pit lane. But it does seem that

:17:34.:17:39.

Silverstone has done so many great things, but the design there of

:17:39.:17:46.

having the pit lane where you cannot actually see the cars is a

:17:46.:17:53.

bit of a shame. But they have reacted, which is good. This looks

:17:53.:17:59.

like it is getting ever wetter. Gary, give us your thoughts. We are

:17:59.:18:04.

seeing a lot of cars on the full wet, is that the way to go?

:18:04.:18:14.
:18:14.:18:15.

GARY ANDERSON: Yes, definitely. They are out on the intermediate,

:18:15.:18:24.

and they will be finding out that it is very, very wet out there.

:18:24.:18:28.

Never mind the fast corners, it is on the straights where they will

:18:28.:18:36.

end up aquaplaning. The full wet tyre manages to move 60 litres of

:18:36.:18:40.

water per second, as opposed to 20 litres of water a second for the

:18:40.:18:43.

intermediate. So there is not really much choice. You can see the

:18:44.:18:48.

rain coming down. DAVID COULTHARD: We saw images of

:18:48.:18:53.

Jude Law in one of the garages, the concentration on his face, and that

:18:53.:18:57.

is exactly what the drivers will be doing. You do not get to see too

:18:57.:19:02.

much of them, of course, but their eyes will be getting that bit wider,

:19:02.:19:05.

they blew be gripping on the steering wheel a bit tighter, and

:19:05.:19:11.

that is the reason why that corner, turn three, is not a corner in the

:19:11.:19:16.

dry, but in the wet, it is a major event. Jean-Eric Vergne, everything

:19:16.:19:20.

just titans. We see the Ferrari coming in, the intermediate coming

:19:20.:19:30.

off, the full wets going on. Meanwhile, the Toro Rosso of Jean-

:19:30.:19:40.
:19:40.:19:41.

Eric Vergne, one of the first out on circuit. They have had the

:19:41.:19:47.

advantage of being out nice and early. Both of their drivers did

:19:47.:19:54.

lots of laps yesterday. They were impressed with some of the times

:19:54.:19:59.

that Ricardo was doing. And all of those laps could work out for them

:19:59.:20:04.

today, as both Daniel Ricardo and Jean-Eric Vergne have been doing

:20:04.:20:10.

well so far. But just look how the car is twitching. If you just hit

:20:10.:20:15.

that puddle slightly differently, it will go flying off. This is just

:20:15.:20:20.

where we saw Senna going off yesterday. And there is another big

:20:20.:20:23.

puddle just done here on the approach to Stowe.

:20:23.:20:28.

DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, the standing water is a feature of Silverstone,

:20:28.:20:34.

which is a combination of old Tarmac and the new surface. It is

:20:34.:20:39.

an airfield circuit, but there is undulation, which is where the

:20:39.:20:47.

water comes across. You can see it on the surface. The driver is

:20:47.:20:53.

trying to position his car, to get the dry areas. Schumacher is off

:20:53.:21:00.

somewhere. He was in fifth gear, so we know that it was a fast corner.

:21:00.:21:06.

He gets into reverse... He is still running, so he can still recover

:21:06.:21:09.

from this and get back in the hunt. Jean-Eric Vergne is currently

:21:10.:21:13.

fastest. You're looking at a replay of Jean-Eric Vergne at the moment.

:21:13.:21:19.

In fact, Perez has just gone quickest. That was a big slide from

:21:19.:21:23.

Jean-Eric Vergne, and you can see the amount of spray. Conditions

:21:23.:21:29.

have changed completely since the start. This is coming into Becketts,

:21:29.:21:35.

Michael had just gone through the first sector. That's him passing

:21:35.:21:40.

Ortiz the old Club corner. He loses control after touching the kerb,

:21:40.:21:44.

manages to keep it off the grass, and then, luckily for Michael,

:21:44.:21:48.

keeps it out of the gravel. He has got more than nine lives when it

:21:49.:21:55.

comes to avoiding spins and getting back out on the track. Not a

:21:55.:22:02.

glimmer from Ross Brawn. I thought he had some damage there for a

:22:02.:22:07.

moment. You can see the aquaplaning, as Michael tries to get the

:22:07.:22:11.

throttle open. When you get to this level of water on the surface, you

:22:12.:22:17.

just cannot clear it. You mentioned 60 metres a second are cleared by

:22:17.:22:21.

the wet tyres, but the issue is the big wooden plank below the surface,

:22:21.:22:25.

which seals with the water, and it becomes the world's fastest

:22:25.:22:32.

skateboard. It is like skimming stones. They are talented drivers,

:22:32.:22:40.

but... There is only so much they can do. This was Michael losing the

:22:40.:22:46.

rear end, and going across the gravel. He rejoins at the exit of

:22:46.:22:54.

Club. Gary, a quick word from you in terms of the set-up on the cars.

:22:54.:22:56.

With the parc ferme regulations, you're not allowed to make many

:22:56.:23:00.

changes between qualifying and the race - how many teams will have

:23:00.:23:05.

looked at the forecast for tomorrow and gone for a wet set-up? Oh, and

:23:05.:23:12.

Alonso on the hangar straight! goodness, he just keeps it away

:23:12.:23:19.

from the wall. That's exactly where Senna lost it yesterday. As you say,

:23:19.:23:24.

Ben, great recovery from Alonso, but you just cannot judge the

:23:24.:23:27.

moment when you're going to start skimming across the surface. He

:23:27.:23:32.

knows he is heading towards the tyres, so he lifts off the brake.

:23:32.:23:36.

Anyone who has ever done any advanced driving on a skid-pan, you

:23:36.:23:41.

get your foot off the brake. You have to find the grip that is

:23:41.:23:48.

available. And this is Schumacher off the track again, down at Stowe

:23:48.:23:53.

corner. He was known as the rain master in the past. Definitely

:23:53.:23:57.

difficult conditions for the drivers. And Alonso, rain master

:23:57.:24:07.
:24:07.:24:12.

earlier this year in malacia. -- in Malaysia. Fernando on the

:24:12.:24:17.

radio, calling for a red flag. What are your thoughts, Gary? Everybody

:24:17.:24:22.

has been out since the start, I don't think that they need to put a

:24:22.:24:28.

red flag out. It is not too bad at the moment. There are puddles, but

:24:28.:24:38.
:24:38.:24:41.

you know where they are. The wet tyres are 10mm bigger in diameter,

:24:41.:24:47.

so it does raise the front of the car. I respect your point of view

:24:47.:24:50.

that the conditions are not too bad, but I am standing here perspiring

:24:50.:24:55.

in the commentary box, because I can feel what it is like Wendy's

:24:55.:25:05.

cars go, especially on a high speed circuit like Silverstone.

:25:05.:25:12.

RADIO: the Sauber was dead slow in the last corner. You have got

:25:12.:25:20.

Kobayashi just behind you, he could be trying to set a time to lap.

:25:20.:25:24.

As they continue their conversation, Hamilton is second, so he is in

:25:24.:25:32.

good shape. In the drop zone, we have got Maldonado and di Resta

:25:32.:25:37.

among others. That's Massa. That's scary, because they are travelling

:25:37.:25:42.

so fast. It is bread flag, so the session has been stopped. That's an

:25:42.:25:46.

interesting situation, stopping the qualifying. Presumably it is just

:25:46.:25:51.

due to the conditions. We have not seen any other major off from

:25:51.:25:57.

seen any other major off from anyone. One point, you will

:25:57.:26:02.

remember Ferrari went out on the intermediate first of all, and then

:26:02.:26:05.

switched to the full wets, but that is not looking like such a good

:26:05.:26:10.

choice now. They will have to do their laps later on, when it could

:26:10.:26:14.

be wetter. Indeed, but you can only confirm the mistake in the fullness

:26:14.:26:18.

of time, and you have got to believe in your convictions, and it

:26:18.:26:22.

felt like the right decision for them at the time. It is easy for us

:26:22.:26:27.

now to say, what were they playing at? You have got to cover your

:26:27.:26:30.

bases in the transitional weather conditions as a team. Sometimes it

:26:30.:26:38.

is difficult to get the two drivers to agree, because one will always

:26:38.:26:44.

feel that he is being compromised. So, the clock has stopped, with

:26:44.:26:49.

just over six minutes to go. It does not look like there is any

:26:49.:26:52.

sign of this rain passing. It looks like pretty much blanket cloud to

:26:52.:26:59.

me. We can see the helicopter up there, so at least it is not low

:26:59.:27:05.

cloud. The clock has stopped, so we should get it started again,

:27:05.:27:12.

although when is a bit of a question. Senna, having not done a

:27:12.:27:20.

time at all in this session, for some reason, whereas Hamilton is

:27:20.:27:25.

second-fastest. At the moment, without any cars going round, the

:27:25.:27:29.

standing water will be gathering even more. You can see charming

:27:29.:27:35.

waiting on the left -- you can see Charlie Whiting on the left, he has

:27:35.:27:40.

got the ultimate decision. GARY ANDERSON: I think the red flag

:27:41.:27:45.

is wrong. We have a 15 minute practice session, and it is about

:27:45.:27:49.

making decisions in that 15 minutes, the best decision that you as a

:27:49.:27:53.

team can make. Ferrari made the wrong decision, going out and

:27:53.:27:55.

intermediates. I would never have made that decision on the

:27:56.:28:01.

conditions that I can see from the pit lane. So, in reality, they made

:28:01.:28:06.

the wrong decision and paid the price. So what happens now is, we

:28:06.:28:11.

wait for six minutes and 19 seconds, and the guys who went out and got

:28:11.:28:15.

the decision right, all of those guys, waste of time. Because now,

:28:15.:28:21.

you can wait for the track to get better, the Red flag will be taken

:28:21.:28:27.

away, the track may be faster. So, it is not really what it should be

:28:27.:28:32.

about. DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, so you just

:28:32.:28:36.

think that it deprives those who made the right decision of having

:28:36.:28:46.
:28:46.:28:47.

the just reward? Yes, but the end of the pit lane is always open, if

:28:47.:28:52.

you do not want to drive around, you can just come in. You do not

:28:52.:28:56.

need a red flag. It is up to you, to decide whether you can beat that

:28:56.:29:06.
:29:06.:29:11.

time. A discussion point indeed. We have an interrupted qualifying here

:29:11.:29:16.

at Silverstone. JAKE HUMPHREY: That's the opinion

:29:16.:29:19.

of Gary Anderson, the kind of opinion which I would imagine

:29:19.:29:23.

people at home are applauding. Everybody who has turned up wants

:29:23.:29:27.

to see racing, and so do you as well. You can understand Gary's

:29:27.:29:30.

point of view. You drive to the conditions, and if there happens to

:29:30.:29:35.

be a lot of rain, then do it. could have almost predicted every

:29:35.:29:40.

single one of those words, because I am so used to Gary, he is an

:29:40.:29:44.

absolute expert in this situation. He defied logic many times when we

:29:44.:29:49.

were working together at Jordan, it always seemed to get the conditions

:29:49.:29:53.

absolutely right. He is absolutely right. They may even get Ferrari

:29:54.:30:02.

back into the top 10, and it is wrong. There is no obligation for

:30:02.:30:06.

them to drive around, and they have been given a second chance, and I

:30:06.:30:13.

don't think that is right. Charlie Whiting is sitting there,

:30:13.:30:16.

seeing Fernando Alonso nearly going into the wall, and he is thinking

:30:16.:30:26.
:30:26.:30:29.

to himself, I do not want to be in It is equally possible for Fernando

:30:29.:30:33.

Alonso to park the car up if he believes conditions are not good

:30:33.:30:41.

enough. He has been given a second chance, whether it is for a Ferrari

:30:41.:30:45.

favouritism, I do not know. I do not think so because Charlie

:30:45.:30:51.

Whiting is a very fair person. reason can be FIA give us for

:30:51.:30:56.

putting qualifying back on and let us sort out the grid for tomorrow?

:30:56.:31:03.

They may say, conditions are too dangerous. Forget whether it is

:31:03.:31:06.

inclement or not, it is too dangerous and we are going to

:31:06.:31:11.

declare qualifying and pole position exactly as it is now. That

:31:12.:31:16.

is probably in their grasp. It may be the easiest thing to do if

:31:16.:31:21.

conditions daylight this. In Brazil a couple of years ago, we had a lot

:31:21.:31:28.

of rain during a qualifying session. There was a red flag, and then they

:31:28.:31:33.

decided to start the qualifying again and then there was a big

:31:33.:31:39.

accident. You have to Remember the climate, the ambient temperature in

:31:39.:31:44.

Brazil is different to what we are witnessing today. You are telling

:31:44.:31:49.

me. There is little chance the water will dissipate off the track

:31:49.:31:52.

and I think they should have finished it off in that and then

:31:52.:31:57.

declared the next session maybe should have been put to one side.

:31:57.:32:01.

You are not wrong about the temperature, 15 degrees at the

:32:01.:32:05.

moment. My decision to leave my coat in the office not a good one.

:32:05.:32:08.

coat in the office not a good one. Let's look at some of those moments,

:32:08.:32:12.

particularly Michael Schumacher. When Michael Schumacher is

:32:12.:32:17.

struggling, you know it is difficult. When you see Michael

:32:17.:32:20.

Schumacher flying off the road and lots of others, and these are

:32:20.:32:28.

experts, you realise they are absolutely struggling. But, the run

:32:28.:32:33.

over at Silverstone is a very safe track. It is well designed for that

:32:33.:32:38.

reason. But conditions mean you have to drive the car to what the

:32:38.:32:44.

conditions and the car's ability. We are getting a good idea of the

:32:44.:32:50.

speed. Fernando Alonso, you'll see how hard he is working the wheel.

:32:50.:32:54.

It is always fascinating to watch the steering wheel. See how hard he

:32:54.:32:59.

works when he starts to lose control of the car. They are always

:32:59.:33:04.

remembering, in the FIA office, this is a high-speed circuits. They

:33:04.:33:11.

are not just tootling around as if they are in Monaco or Abu Dhabi,

:33:11.:33:18.

they are going extremely fast? they are, and nobody wants an

:33:18.:33:24.

accident, but you want to see a driver with the skill of Alonso.

:33:24.:33:28.

Outside of the UK they consider Fernando Alonso being the No 1

:33:28.:33:34.

driver in Formula One at the moment. And the fact he is leading the

:33:34.:33:38.

Championship in what is probably not the best car, endorse his that.

:33:38.:33:43.

He just have to slow the car down and himself down. As much as you

:33:43.:33:49.

believe this is helping the likes of Fernando Alonso, what does this

:33:49.:33:53.

do for Sergio Perez. He set a brilliant lap time, got their

:33:53.:33:59.

strategy straight on, and now they are punished? Maybe we are talking

:33:59.:34:03.

too soon? I do not see this rain easing off. Maybe the cloud has got

:34:03.:34:08.

a bit higher and there is some hope. He has done everything possible,

:34:08.:34:13.

being quickest and he should be allowed to keep it. That is the

:34:13.:34:18.

point of Gary Anderson. I support that. I think we should say well

:34:18.:34:22.

done to the thousands of people who not only battled to get in here

:34:22.:34:27.

today, but have camped overnight in a very wet campsites. There they

:34:27.:34:33.

are, still sitting in the grandstands. They are the best in

:34:33.:34:38.

the world and they need to be in weather like this? I cannot pay

:34:38.:34:43.

enough compliments to those people. We are all privileged, we have a

:34:43.:34:48.

sport which started as a hobby, then became a sport and then a

:34:48.:34:52.

business. Without those fans, and I am grateful to them, I don't think

:34:52.:34:57.

we would be out here doing what we do. Words escape me because I

:34:57.:35:01.

cannot be more complimentary two years. The only thing Eddie is

:35:01.:35:06.

disappointing about, is at a Grand Prix there are lots of people

:35:06.:35:10.

wanting an autograph or a photo. And now you have three the lonely

:35:10.:35:14.

looking men are walking along who says the paddock is the place to be

:35:14.:35:19.

this weekend. It is not the place to be if you add Jenson Button. He

:35:19.:35:24.

struggled in qualifying and had a few tough last races, he is with

:35:24.:35:29.

Lee McKenzie. We are caught out by the yellow? He got works for some

:35:29.:35:39.

reason in the last sector and no where else. 1:seven seconds on my

:35:39.:35:47.

dashboard. It is a pity. But definitely was not meant to be. The

:35:47.:35:52.

good thing is I suppose, the positive you can take his these

:35:52.:35:56.

guys are running round for two more sessions on their tyres and it is

:35:56.:36:02.

going to rain tomorrow. It will make the race very difficult. I am

:36:02.:36:08.

back in 18th, but maybe I will have better tyres. Up until the last run,

:36:08.:36:12.

what was the difference? You are struggling and I heard you mention

:36:12.:36:18.

tyres? I could not get any heat in the front tyres. Coming out of the

:36:18.:36:23.

pits I felt it should a ring. I was hitting the brakes, on the throttle,

:36:23.:36:30.

weaving. That is the reason I could not get a lifetime out of the tyre.

:36:30.:36:40.
:36:40.:36:43.

-- weaving. Webber Went 19th to fourth last weekend, so you

:36:43.:36:49.

probably wouldn't mind going 18th to first this weekend? I would like

:36:49.:36:54.

to put on a better show for the fans. But it is the story of my

:36:54.:37:00.

year. It is pretty normal. I know I can drive a racing car in the wet.

:37:00.:37:04.

I think he is doing his best to smile through that. He said it

:37:04.:37:09.

pretty much sums up his ear. A bit of rain, we are still on the

:37:09.:37:15.

television and Eddie decides it is time to go and get some soup. What

:37:15.:37:20.

kind of soup is that? It is some kind of broth and this is the

:37:21.:37:26.

temperature I am most accustomed to. Let's head up to the commentary box.

:37:26.:37:31.

David, we have heard the thoughts of Gary Anderson and we have heard

:37:31.:37:35.

from Eddie Jordan, but I am fascinated to hear from not just

:37:36.:37:42.

the two Abu, but from a man who is here with us for the British Grand

:37:42.:37:48.

Prix, ladies and gentlemen, Murray Walker. You have chosen a dry place

:37:48.:37:54.

to be? I am absolutely fine and revelling in this. It is an

:37:54.:37:59.

indication of what a fabulous system we have got for qualifying.

:37:59.:38:03.

For years we struggled the best way to sort out the people who would be

:38:03.:38:07.

on the front row of the grid. Now we had the three sessions, and

:38:07.:38:12.

unless I am mistaken, it is seven years since the system began and it

:38:12.:38:17.

is really working. We are waiting for the final session and lock who

:38:17.:38:23.

is still not on the front row of the grid. Maldonado, Grosjean,

:38:23.:38:31.

Felipe Massa, Alonso, La Charette. It is Eddie, surely you cannot have

:38:32.:38:35.

proved they have stopped this particular session. There is

:38:35.:38:40.

another session to go, but also part of the second one to happen so

:38:40.:38:46.

we are not sure where this grid is growing -- going? Famously Eddie,

:38:46.:38:52.

you are a hard man and you are demonstrating that now. But I agree

:38:52.:38:56.

with you. That is the way things are, I would like to have seen

:38:56.:39:03.

things to go on because it is the same for everybody. David? I have

:39:03.:39:08.

tremendous respect for your point of view, you have been commentating

:39:08.:39:13.

on Formula One since the formation of the Championship. But as a

:39:13.:39:20.

driver there comes a time when the cars are not fit force -- fit for

:39:20.:39:24.

purpose. Those who made a good decision to get out early and say,

:39:25.:39:31.

let's get a time in. It only takes one lap to create the grid. They

:39:31.:39:36.

should reap the benefit of that. But I also think the race director,

:39:36.:39:44.

Charlie Whiting had done the white thing -- right thing. But they

:39:44.:39:47.

should start within six minutes when the red flag is taken away.

:39:47.:39:52.

But it is right not to have the cars running in these conditions

:39:53.:39:57.

because it will lead to a high- speed crash. When they take to the

:39:57.:40:02.

grass, they have no control. Potentially, David in this

:40:02.:40:08.

situation, when the grid will be as it is shown. His qualifying going

:40:08.:40:14.

to start again? In your memory banks Qamar can you remember a time

:40:14.:40:19.

when a qualifying session was not restarted, so Alveston included?

:40:19.:40:24.

Off the top of my head, it goes a bit fuzzy when you ask a question

:40:24.:40:29.

like that. I can remember some terrible conditions. -- silver

:40:29.:40:38.

stunned. This really is bad. You look up into the sky, it is grey,

:40:38.:40:46.

the rain is coming down by the bucketful. There is your man, Lewis

:40:46.:40:52.

Hamilton is second on the grid at the moment? If things stay as they

:40:52.:40:59.

are at the moment, but going with pole position, Sergio Perez has

:40:59.:41:06.

impressed so many times already. As BMW Sabir, they did have a pole

:41:06.:41:15.

position. But Sauber, without the investment from BMW, this will be

:41:15.:41:23.

their first ever pole position. And we could be on to a great story.

:41:23.:41:27.

Perez nearly beat Fernando Alonso and he could be on pole position.

:41:27.:41:32.

am going to eat a slice of humble pie. Last year when it was

:41:32.:41:40.

announced Perez was going to be driving the Sauber, I thought he is

:41:40.:41:44.

another day driver, some Mexican millions behind him. But he has

:41:44.:41:50.

gone incredibly well. We have seen how talented he is, especially in

:41:50.:41:55.

terms of looking after his tyres? am sure he feels he has unfinished

:41:55.:42:02.

business. When he was chasing down Alonso, he probably thinks it was a

:42:02.:42:07.

missed opportunity. We could have uninteresting look at the front

:42:07.:42:13.

grid. Murray Walker, I love to chat to you about Formula One and hear

:42:13.:42:16.

how it is for you coming back to the British Grand Prix. What is it

:42:16.:42:22.

like being back here for you? Silverstone is so much a part of my

:42:22.:42:29.

life. I was at the 1948 British Grand Prix, which was won by Luigi

:42:29.:42:37.

Vella racy in a Maserati. My first ever broadcast was at 1949. I was

:42:37.:42:42.

at the Royal meeting in 1950 when Giuseppe Farina won and I have been

:42:42.:42:46.

here for all of the rest of them. My first love is motorbikes, as you

:42:46.:42:51.

know and there have been some fantastic motorbike meetings, and I

:42:51.:43:01.
:43:01.:43:03.

loved Silverstone, but I love it more when it is dry. We will be

:43:03.:43:09.

back with you shortly. We have Lee McKenzie and side and Gary Anderson.

:43:09.:43:14.

They are not lucky enough to be in a dry, but hopefully if there are

:43:14.:43:18.

some drivers and team bosses to talk to, we will get an idea of

:43:18.:43:24.

what the atmosphere is like. Eddie, finish your soup. It is magnificent.

:43:24.:43:29.

Tell us what is going on inside the teams at the moment? This is

:43:29.:43:35.

crucial for them. The guys who will do the strategy, they will look at

:43:35.:43:38.

it were they were quick and were they were not. They will be telling

:43:38.:43:44.

the driver, that is stagnant water, you have to miss that. Stay away

:43:44.:43:49.

from the markings. The painter you see his like ice, it is a skating

:43:49.:43:56.

cars hogging the middle of the roads. There is less grit there, a

:43:56.:44:01.

less danger for start we have been given the news it will be about 45

:44:01.:44:07.

minutes until this rain stops. the team thing, we would just get a

:44:08.:44:12.

coffee, or is it constant information? Constant information.

:44:12.:44:16.

They will be thinking how can we move the car further up the grid.

:44:17.:44:21.

People on the brink, people like Paul di Resta will be wanting to

:44:21.:44:26.

get up to where Hulkenberg is, fifth on the grid. Some teams will

:44:26.:44:32.

be saying, leave it as it is. The weather is atrocious, we have done

:44:32.:44:37.

what we needed to do in a proper way, let's declare the grid as it

:44:37.:44:41.

is. I am sure they would love to do that, if you were at Jordan is that

:44:41.:44:46.

what you would be saying? I would be jumping up and down and having a

:44:46.:44:51.

word with Charlie. Saying you cannot possibly do this, less like

:44:51.:44:55.

it off because we have all of the cars in one piece for tomorrow.

:44:56.:44:59.

That is the key, making sure everybody is safe and take the grid

:44:59.:45:05.

for tomorrow. We are struggling out birth. We will see what happens

:45:06.:45:12.

before long. Lots off fans waving at the moment. David, why is a

:45:12.:45:16.

driver would you want to stay in the car? Like wood and you want to

:45:17.:45:26.
:45:27.:45:30.

stretch your legs and calm yourself he can keep his focus. Personally,

:45:30.:45:35.

I would be out and I would be having a couple of -- a cup of tea,

:45:35.:45:39.

I think, speaking to my engineer. Paul di Resta, he is obviously

:45:39.:45:45.

focused on improving on his current 12th position, as and when and if

:45:45.:45:50.

they do restart this session. is the mindset, is it a case of

:45:50.:45:54.

trying to keep yourself calm, or is it a case of keeping the adrenalin

:45:54.:45:59.

going? DAVID COULTHARD: Driving in the wet

:45:59.:46:02.

is the ultimate example of controlled aggression. In the dry,

:46:02.:46:12.
:46:12.:46:12.

it is all about attack. In the rain, it is all about absolutely small

:46:12.:46:16.

inputs, small inputs on the throttle, there is no traction

:46:16.:46:23.

control of course. Small inputs on the brake pressure. Physically, you

:46:23.:46:33.
:46:33.:46:33.

do not have the high G-forces in the wet, but you are tense, so

:46:34.:46:37.

everything gets fatigued, your hips and your torso, and it puts a lot

:46:37.:46:41.

more pressure on you. One man who's not feeling too much pressure right

:46:42.:46:51.
:46:52.:46:56.

now is Jude Law and friends. He is with the Lotus team. If I can come

:46:56.:47:04.

back to you, Murray walker, and a stew about the Lotus team this year,

:47:04.:47:13.

particularly Romain Grosjean... am one of the old school, and for

:47:13.:47:18.

me, Lotus died with Colin Chapman. But the Lotus name is still going.

:47:18.:47:24.

They are doing an absolutely fabulous job. The Team Principal

:47:24.:47:29.

has made some courageous decisions, one of which was to bring Romain

:47:29.:47:35.

Grosjean back into Formula 1. We all know that after he replaced

:47:36.:47:39.

Nelson Piquet Jnr after the problems that they had, that he

:47:39.:47:44.

himself had problems and had to go back to GP2. And it was a

:47:44.:47:50.

calculated risk, which has worked out wonderfully well. France

:47:50.:47:55.

desperately needs some good Grand Prix drivers, to get its place back

:47:55.:47:59.

in the Grand Prix firmament. Let's remember that Grand Prix racing

:47:59.:48:05.

actually started in France. So, Romain Grosjean doing as well as he

:48:05.:48:09.

is is a very significant factor. He is one of the people who could win

:48:09.:48:13.

a Grand Prix this year that has not yet done so. Heaven knows how many

:48:13.:48:17.

there will be, perhaps 10 winners by the end of the season. We are

:48:17.:48:21.

all trying to work out why Jude Law is allowed inside the pit lane when

:48:21.:48:26.

we are banned from going in once decision has started. I'm sure he

:48:26.:48:31.

has got special dispensation for being good-looking or something.

:48:31.:48:36.

EDDIE JORDAN: Actually, I know him as Watson, not as Jude Law, because

:48:36.:48:42.

of the Sherlock Holmes story, which has made him into a megastar.

:48:42.:48:49.

best not to mention Alfie, probably. We mention Romain Grosjean, he will

:48:49.:48:52.

be sitting in his car, working out what to do - have you been

:48:52.:48:57.

impressed by the way he has got on with Kimi Raikkonen? If you

:48:57.:49:02.

remember, in Valencia, I apologised to the boss of the team, because I

:49:02.:49:09.

did not think that Grosjean was worthy of a second chance. How

:49:09.:49:13.

wrong I was. This guy has turned the light switch on, and it is

:49:13.:49:18.

fantastic to see. Bruno Senna is also hoping to impress this weekend,

:49:18.:49:23.

after a couple of difficult races. He has come out of the garage to

:49:23.:49:29.

speak to our lovely Lee McKenzie. How wet is it? It is a glamorous

:49:29.:49:34.

life, as you can tell. How difficult work things out there for

:49:34.:49:40.

you? It is difficult. We made the mistake of going out on the inters.

:49:40.:49:45.

We got stuck behind a slower cars on the full wets. I could not get a

:49:45.:49:49.

lap with the inters, and when we put the full wets on, it was too

:49:49.:49:53.

late. It is very frustrating. But we will see what happens with the

:49:53.:49:57.

rain, and hopefully when we restart, the conditions will be competitive.

:49:57.:50:03.

We saw the effects of what the rain can do yesterday, and you had a bit

:50:03.:50:13.

of a big off. How difficult is it? David was sale, these cars are not

:50:13.:50:21.

boats, so was it really dangerous? It was starting to get a bit

:50:21.:50:26.

dangerous, especially around Becketts. You could see Fernando

:50:26.:50:32.

and Massa going off, so I think it is the right way to do it. But

:50:32.:50:39.

unfortunately for us, we had not put a lap time in yet. I am going

:50:39.:50:42.

to try to give you these headphones, so that David Coulthard can speak

:50:42.:50:47.

to you. You will still be attached to me, so don't walk away, for

:50:47.:50:56.

heaven's sake. DAVID COULTHARD: Can you hear me?

:50:56.:51:01.

can hear you. You are apparently attached to Lee, so that's no

:51:01.:51:06.

hardship. You have got at least 10 minutes, we're hearing, so you do

:51:06.:51:10.

not need to worry. Just picking up on what Lee said, I would love it

:51:10.:51:16.

if you could explain why it is so difficult in these conditions. Most

:51:16.:51:20.

people can probably relate to aquaplaning, if they have been out

:51:20.:51:25.

on a motorway, but why do these Formula 1 cars just snap away? We

:51:25.:51:30.

have seen world champions disappearing off the racetrack.

:51:30.:51:36.

is because we run a very low ride height. As the tyres are

:51:36.:51:38.

aquaplaning, we are also aquaplaning with the bottom of the

:51:39.:51:44.

car. It is a bit like a hull. It will go wherever it wants.

:51:45.:51:49.

Especially at high speeds, you just losing the downforce as well. So,

:51:49.:51:53.

everything accumulates, and you end up having a big off, like I had

:51:53.:51:57.

yesterday. Fernando and Felipe Massa have been having the same

:51:57.:52:02.

problem. It is very tough in these conditions. Hopefully we can get

:52:02.:52:07.

back onto the track and do some more laps when the conditions are

:52:07.:52:16.

better. But the conditions are the same for everybody. If it is too

:52:16.:52:21.

dangerous, park the car. We should not be held in suspense for another

:52:21.:52:26.

six minutes, surely, it should have either been stopped or allowed to

:52:26.:52:30.

fizzle out and finish the session and make that the qualifying grid?

:52:30.:52:34.

The problem is that we had a lot of cars going off the track, and then

:52:34.:52:38.

you end up with a red flag for a crash. There is no point continuing

:52:38.:52:42.

if you have got more than four or five cars going off the track, so I

:52:42.:52:47.

think it is the right decision. Hopefully it is going to get better.

:52:47.:52:52.

JAKE HUMPHREY: Before we let you go, Bruno, I would love you to say

:52:52.:52:57.

hello to Murray walker, up in the commentary box, who of course for

:52:57.:53:00.

so many years was the voice of the success of your uncle in Formula 1.

:53:00.:53:05.

Murray, I am sure you would like to say hello was well. Good to hear

:53:05.:53:09.

from you, Murray, and hopefully we will meet up and talk about some

:53:09.:53:14.

good moments in the near future. Indeed, yes. You have had a very

:53:15.:53:20.

difficult start to your career, you lost about 10 years through not

:53:20.:53:26.

being able to do karting, like most people do, but you are now with an

:53:26.:53:29.

absolutely top team - how does it feel in comparison with the ones

:53:29.:53:34.

you have been in in the past? course, it is a great privilege to

:53:34.:53:38.

be with Williams, especially in a year in which they have recovered

:53:38.:53:44.

so well from last year. It is good that you know whenever you come to

:53:44.:53:47.

a track that you will have the chance to score points, and to be

:53:47.:53:52.

in the top five sometimes. Although it sounds like a dream, this year

:53:52.:53:56.

is a bit of a nightmare, with how close the grid is. You make one

:53:56.:54:02.

mistake, and you can be losing 10 positions this year. So it is a

:54:02.:54:07.

tough time in Formula 1, but that is how you raise your game. I am

:54:07.:54:10.

really glad I am here. Hopefully I will have some good races at the

:54:11.:54:16.

end of the season. Thank you very much for joining us, Bruno. Just

:54:16.:54:25.

behind us, we can see, this is what is happening, and you can see the

:54:25.:54:30.

fans and the marshals and you can see the clock just stuck at six

:54:30.:54:35.

minutes, 19 seconds. But still smiles on people's faces. Eddie and

:54:35.:54:41.

myself are doing our best to keep dry and warm. Thanks for ordering

:54:41.:54:46.

the coffee for me. Not that we want to make you feel bad, Gary Anderson,

:54:46.:54:51.

out in the rain. How is it going? It is going pretty good, it is

:54:51.:54:55.

still raining, but not nearly as heavily as it was. But there will

:54:55.:55:03.

be some big puddles around. By but with six minutes, 19 seconds to go,

:55:03.:55:07.

in reality, if you get out of the pit lane pretty early, that will

:55:07.:55:13.

allow you to do three times laps. So you have got to risk more to put

:55:13.:55:18.

the laps in then you were risking before, because the track will be a

:55:18.:55:22.

total unknown. You will have to find all of those puddles again.

:55:22.:55:26.

They are going to be bigger. I am not a great believer of what has

:55:26.:55:31.

happened here at all. Can you give us an idea, Gary, when you were in

:55:31.:55:39.

the Jordan team, what would be the atmosphere in Jordan if this

:55:39.:55:44.

decision had been made, and we were back in 2001, and you were fighting

:55:44.:55:49.

for victories or points? Well, the decisions you make as a team are

:55:50.:55:52.

the things that you pay the price fall. Ferrari made the wrong

:55:52.:55:58.

decision, and are suffering the consequences of it. Williams made

:55:58.:56:01.

the wrong decision. So they are suffering the consequences as well.

:56:01.:56:05.

But for the teams that have made a good decision, and hopefully we

:56:05.:56:10.

would have been one of them, Jordan, that is what it is about. If there

:56:10.:56:13.

is a red flag because of an accident or somebody has gone off,

:56:13.:56:17.

I fully understand that. But whenever you have a limited session

:56:17.:56:22.

time, I don't think you can interfere with the outcome of it.

:56:22.:56:25.

And this is what it is, it is an interference with the outcome of

:56:25.:56:29.

the session. So, in the future, if it looks as though the rain is

:56:29.:56:33.

getting heavier, why even bother going out on the track, why not

:56:33.:56:38.

just park up, knowing that somebody will throw a red flag up? It is so

:56:38.:56:44.

inconsistent. The teams are there to make good decisions and bad

:56:44.:56:51.

decisions. Gary, we have just been seeing some shots from the

:56:51.:56:56.

commentary box, there is quite a lot of work going on on the car at

:56:56.:57:00.

Lotus, and we are not in parc ferme conditions yet, so the teams to

:57:00.:57:04.

have an opportunity to change the set up, so how does that affect

:57:04.:57:11.

their approach? I am a bit surprised about that. When you have

:57:11.:57:18.

got parc ferme, it starts at the beginning of qualifying. You can

:57:18.:57:23.

change electronics or the front wing angles, wheels and tyres, but

:57:23.:57:27.

the rest of it should be not able to be worked on. You can work on it

:57:27.:57:32.

as long as you're not putting different parts on the car. We know

:57:32.:57:35.

that Kimi Raikkonen was talking earlier on about having a problem

:57:35.:57:39.

with KERS. I don't know whether they are working on that. I cannot

:57:39.:57:44.

see. It is strange. The parc ferme rules start at the beginning of the

:57:44.:57:49.

qualifying session, the minute you drive out of the pit lane.

:57:49.:57:57.

EDDIE JORDAN: If you look at where Rosberg is currently, third on the

:57:57.:58:02.

grid - was he so lucky to make it through even, because had it not

:58:02.:58:05.

been for a tardy lap from Jenson Button, he would not even have made

:58:05.:58:12.

it through, so why take away what he did, which was a great job?

:58:12.:58:19.

That's exactly right, Eddie. When you're a small team, and we saw

:58:19.:58:24.

Kovalainen putting on the slick tyres, they were the teams that

:58:24.:58:29.

needed to take that gamble. If possible, it is the teams at the

:58:29.:58:32.

back that you want to see doing something different to get up at

:58:32.:58:39.

the front. I watched Sauber, and they had done a good lap term, they

:58:39.:58:42.

knew, as long as anybody else did not put on the slick tyres, they

:58:43.:58:46.

would not have to worry. Why would a team which is potentially at the

:58:46.:58:50.

front take those risks? I can understand completely a team at the

:58:50.:58:57.

back taking those risks. But sometimes, the decisions which are

:58:57.:59:05.

made in the pit lane now, I find them a bit illogical. We are joined

:59:05.:59:15.

now by Christian Horner, fresh from the pit wall. What do you know

:59:15.:59:21.

about where we might be able to get racing again? They are saying that

:59:21.:59:24.

this rain could go on for about an hour. Hopefully after that it will

:59:25.:59:29.

start to lift. But there is so much surface water, and Silverstone is

:59:29.:59:33.

not great for aquaplaning, with the corners being so quick, that's the

:59:33.:59:42.

major problem, we need to get rid of the surface water. Actually,

:59:42.:59:44.

those were very high quality police officers, I would have been happy

:59:44.:59:51.

to go to jail with them. Never mind. Sue Key eighth and tenth on the

:59:51.:59:57.

grid, surely you would want to continue with this, but surely you

:59:57.:00:04.

have to have some thought for people like Hamilton, Rosberg and

:00:04.:00:07.

Perez - they have done the job, so this should be declared as the

:00:07.:00:17.
:00:17.:00:21.

final grid position, don't you in Japan a few years ago qualifying

:00:21.:00:25.

was run on Sunday morning, if the weather was so bad. Hopefully it

:00:26.:00:31.

won't come to that. It has been a matter of survival. We navigated a

:00:31.:00:36.

way through the first session. The circuit has deteriorated and it is

:00:36.:00:43.

a matter of surviving those sessions. Daniel Ricciardo and

:00:43.:00:47.

Jean-Eric Vergne are doing a great job. If you are wondering what

:00:47.:00:52.

Christian is looking at when he turns around. If you are watching

:00:52.:00:57.

this on the TV, you don't have access to this. This is what the

:00:57.:01:01.

teams have on the pit wall. How much information can you glean from

:01:01.:01:06.

this as a team? We have the three columns for the different sectors.

:01:06.:01:12.

The circuit is split up into three sectors. Anything that goes green

:01:12.:01:17.

is a personal best. Anything that is purple is good because it is

:01:17.:01:23.

quickest over all. We can see how a lap time is progressing. Whether

:01:23.:01:29.

you are quicker than a competitor. The middle sector has got Becketts,

:01:29.:01:34.

another crucial sector. It gives you an overview of were your

:01:34.:01:39.

strengths and weaknesses are. need to ask you again about Japan.

:01:39.:01:43.

You said a similar set of circumstances. Actually it wasn't,

:01:43.:01:49.

we did not run at all on the Saturday, we did not have any times

:01:49.:01:54.

for any one. We have half the session here. It would be perfectly

:01:54.:01:58.

OK to declare that the grid. don't think in a sporting race they

:01:58.:02:03.

can do that. The session has not finished. I would have to read of

:02:03.:02:10.

the regulations or speak to Jonathan, our team manager. I know

:02:10.:02:15.

you don't know the regulations! If it was declared a result now, I'm

:02:15.:02:21.

not sure if they wouldn't go with car number. That is in the sporting

:02:21.:02:26.

regulations as well. We want to see it restarted and even if it was run

:02:26.:02:31.

tomorrow if it were dry, that would be preferable to anything else.

:02:31.:02:39.

Could it be started under the safety car? You cannot qualify

:02:39.:02:44.

under the safety car, Eddie. They have already qualified. You are

:02:44.:02:49.

getting very confusing now. question we have been asking is why

:02:49.:02:53.

do we need a red flag? If the circuit becomes waterlogged you

:02:53.:02:56.

slowdown and drive to the conditions. If you are better than

:02:56.:03:01.

Ferrari and McLaren and overcoming the battle on the track, you

:03:01.:03:07.

deserve to be on pole position. If you choose it is not safe, you can

:03:07.:03:14.

bring your cars in? These cars are only 500 or so kilos. The amount of

:03:14.:03:18.

standing water they get lifted up, on the Strait of going through some

:03:18.:03:24.

of the corners. They are so light. They are floating on the surface

:03:24.:03:29.

and they lose control. We saw Fernando Alonso, very lucky to get

:03:29.:03:35.

a way with an incident and Felipe Massa. It is too dangerous. If you

:03:35.:03:39.

allow the drivers to go out and qualified they will want to go for

:03:39.:03:45.

it. We said to both their drivers, take it easy when the weather came

:03:45.:03:52.

down. We want to make sure the cars are also in one piece. We you get

:03:52.:03:57.

Jonathan Steele e-mail Eddie a copy of the sporting regulations.

:03:57.:04:01.

would rather he didn't so, I don't want to see them. He wouldn't

:04:01.:04:10.

follow them anyway. We have heard from Christian, Gary and Eddie as

:04:10.:04:15.

to why this session should be on. Let's hear from Charlie Whiting,

:04:15.:04:22.

the race director himself. If you could give me a status of

:04:22.:04:28.

date? It looks like the rain should stop at about 2:45pm. We are

:04:28.:04:33.

clearing the water away and we will keep doing that until it stops and

:04:33.:04:39.

do our best to make sure it is drivable quickly after that. Tell

:04:39.:04:43.

me what you're looking for out there so it is ready? The main

:04:43.:04:48.

thing is to have no standing water where cars can aquaplaned. Those

:04:48.:04:53.

are the worst conditions. How long do you anticipate before we get

:04:53.:04:59.

going again? It would be an estimates but around about 3pm with

:04:59.:05:03.

any luck if the weather forecast is accurate. It should be around that

:05:03.:05:11.

time. That was provided to us by Formula One Management. 3pm,

:05:11.:05:15.

Charlie Whiting thinks the cars might be able to go out there and

:05:15.:05:19.

think about completing this qualifying session. Lewis Hamilton

:05:19.:05:23.

has such fond memories of this circuit in the wet. His second

:05:23.:05:26.

season in Formula One, the year when he was crowned Formula One

:05:26.:05:32.

champion. He came here and drove fantastically. Wonderful shots of

:05:32.:05:36.

him emerging through the spray on his way to victory. Sadly he will

:05:36.:05:42.

market a chance to go out in the next 45 minutes. Bruno Senna said

:05:42.:05:46.

he thinks they need to go on and gets on with it because he does not

:05:46.:05:50.

want this session to be declared because he has not set a time and

:05:50.:05:55.

it would penalise him if they decided to declare the session. You

:05:55.:05:59.

see Frank Williams in the garage with him? I can understand that but

:05:59.:06:05.

my thoughts are with the other, 17 Total drivers have made it through.

:06:06.:06:10.

He was the one he decided not to put in a time. Maybe he was saving

:06:10.:06:16.

tyres? Why should he have the benefit as someone who has gone out,

:06:16.:06:20.

please the fans and done an honourable situation. I don't know

:06:21.:06:26.

why La Charette did not do that lap, he should have done. The race

:06:26.:06:35.

director sends out a safety car and they drive around. -- Bruno Senna.

:06:35.:06:40.

We heard from Bruno Senna describing what it is like to drive

:06:40.:06:44.

a car in these conditions of people at home will be saying we have had

:06:44.:06:48.

flash floods across the country, I drove to the supermarket and

:06:48.:06:54.

through a large puddle with no problem. Why is it harder in a

:06:54.:07:00.

Formula One car? He has his nice window wipers removing the water

:07:00.:07:04.

from the windscreen. Not something I would recommend, but if somebody

:07:04.:07:10.

has not had their window wipers working in a road car, you realise

:07:10.:07:14.

visibility is an issue. You cannot see where there is changes in

:07:14.:07:22.

colour to indicate whether puddles are. There is a legend of Formula

:07:22.:07:28.

One. He has had several of his cars winning a round this racetrack. It

:07:28.:07:33.

is difficult in the Grand Prix car when it is light. Look at the

:07:33.:07:39.

clearance under the safety car. The tyres are dispersing the water and

:07:39.:07:44.

you have two tons of car pushing the compact down into the road.

:07:45.:07:50.

When you have a car weighing 600 kilos slipping and sliding. We get

:07:50.:07:55.

in image of them sliding. Underneath the car, there is a gap

:07:55.:08:02.

at both sides of word the plank is. There is not a lot of standing

:08:02.:08:05.

water, but the issue of the driver has is the downforce coming off the

:08:05.:08:12.

car. Aircraft generates lift and pulls it up into the sky. The wings

:08:12.:08:17.

on these cars generate downforce and push it into the racetrack.

:08:17.:08:21.

When you are running below 60 kilometres an hour, as used see-

:08:21.:08:26.

through Club corner, they have very little load on the car and there is

:08:26.:08:30.

nothing pushing the tie into the surface and generating the grip

:08:30.:08:37.

necessary. -- the tyre. If anyone has any doubt within the drivers

:08:37.:08:41.

capabilities, Michael Schumacher has been off the track twice. He

:08:41.:08:45.

was known as the rain master and then we see Timo Glock coming out

:08:45.:08:49.

of the last section of Club corner building a power slide and runs out

:08:49.:08:59.

on to the kerb. This was the next lap. He decided to push it a bit

:08:59.:09:04.

more and the rain was coming down. He lost control. That is what

:09:04.:09:09.

brought out the yellow flags. He runs for the line at the chequered

:09:09.:09:13.

flag. At this point in the session there was hardly any standing water.

:09:13.:09:19.

I know it is disappointing for the fans, but there is no question,

:09:19.:09:24.

just because you can nip to the shops in your road car. We are not

:09:24.:09:29.

comparing apples with apples. It is the British Grand Prix. But the

:09:29.:09:33.

good news is it looks like the rain is backing off. From our commentary

:09:33.:09:39.

box we can see the crowd doing a Mexican wave. Maybe we should call

:09:39.:09:44.

it a Silverstone wave? Enthusiasm is still there with the fans.

:09:44.:09:48.

Murray Walker, you have commented on some amazing moments over the

:09:48.:09:54.

years, do you think the sport has become too risky avert? Especially

:09:54.:09:58.

in Canada when Jenson Button had that wonderful win when people felt

:09:58.:10:02.

the safety car stayed out too long and the sport did not give the

:10:02.:10:06.

drivers the chance to test their skills in the rain? Do you think,

:10:07.:10:13.

compared to the 60s, 70s and 80s they are making decisions at it is

:10:13.:10:21.

safely? It is terribly difficult to know where to draw the line. In the

:10:21.:10:24.

early days of Formula One one-for- five people were killed every year.

:10:24.:10:30.

The attitude then was, the throttle works both ways, if you cannot take

:10:30.:10:35.

the heat, take out a big kitchen. I think Jackie Stuart lost over 30 of

:10:35.:10:43.

his personal friends. Formula One was just too dangerous. -- stay out

:10:43.:10:47.

of the kitchen. Improvements were made, but the catalyst was the

:10:47.:10:53.

appalling death of Ayrton Senna at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.

:10:53.:10:58.

Bahar this commentary job of my life, having to talk through that.

:10:58.:11:03.

That is when Max Mosley, he was then in charge of the FIA, decided

:11:03.:11:07.

something drastic had to be done and some stringent, new regulations

:11:07.:11:13.

were brought in to improve safety. It is a sport, you don't expect to

:11:13.:11:19.

go out and get killed doing it. But if you talk to Stirling Moss, he

:11:19.:11:24.

will say it can be to say. He will say to you, in my day there was

:11:24.:11:27.

never any question of overlapping wheels with people or banging

:11:27.:11:33.

wheels with people. You knew the result probably would be terminal.

:11:33.:11:39.

Thanks very much. We can go down to the paddock and the Mackenzie is

:11:39.:11:43.

with Bernie Ecclestone. He is squashing me with the

:11:43.:11:48.

umbrella. He promised me he would hold the umbrella. What is

:11:48.:11:55.

happening? With what? The cars, when will they be out on track?

:11:55.:12:01.

should think in about half-an-hour. What have you made of what has

:12:01.:12:04.

happened at Silverstone over the last 24 hours, a lot of fans

:12:04.:12:11.

unhappy? I feel sorry for the fans. You cannot blame anybody, it is the

:12:11.:12:14.

weather. There wouldn't have been any problem with the car parking if

:12:15.:12:19.

it had not have reigned. So you think we will get the cars back out

:12:19.:12:22.

in 30 minutes, would you make any predictions are as to what will

:12:22.:12:32.

happen this weekend? Unpredictable. Shall I wore cute to your door?

:12:32.:12:40.

can have the umbrella. In a minute. I am going this way. Can I walk you

:12:40.:12:50.
:12:50.:12:55.

to your door. Is this your door? J HUMPHREYS: can Bernie Ecclestone

:12:56.:12:58.

show has or where egos when he is wet?

:12:59.:13:07.

Can you show us your home? I think that is no, or maybe he said come

:13:07.:13:10.

back and a couple of minutes without the camera, but I doubt

:13:10.:13:20.

that. Please do start sending us messages on Twitter. We would love

:13:20.:13:26.

to share some of your messages. I have had a text from Chris Evans

:13:26.:13:32.

saying get the cars down to Ascot, it is nice and sunny. Chris, we

:13:32.:13:37.

would have loved to have had to here. Everybody realises what a

:13:37.:13:40.

find you are motor-racing and all of those wonderful Ferrari

:13:40.:13:45.

collections you have got. Let's talk about Bernie Ecclestone as he

:13:45.:13:50.

goes off into the motor home nobody is allowed into. I have been in

:13:50.:13:58.

there. Usually he is chastising me for something I shouldn't have said.

:13:58.:14:04.

He gets frustrated when you have sessions like this? He once the

:14:04.:14:09.

fans to be able to see motor racing when they expect to see it? He will

:14:09.:14:14.

be furious because he is such a stickler for occasions. We see how

:14:15.:14:19.

the trucks are lined up brilliantly. He is the past master of making

:14:20.:14:24.

everything stylish and he has brought a new level of Formula One

:14:24.:14:29.

to the people. He will be furious the weather has got in the wake.

:14:29.:14:33.

The weather is not predictable. But that is what you get to hear. He

:14:33.:14:38.

understands. You feel sorry for the circuit. Bernie Ecclestone has been

:14:38.:14:43.

tough on Silverstone over the years, he has made them work hard on his

:14:43.:14:49.

Grand Prix. He has, and I am a member of the BRDC, and sometimes I

:14:49.:14:53.

have not agreed with the comments he has come out with. I think he

:14:53.:14:59.

has been too tough, but we look at the new wing and I'm wouldn't think

:14:59.:15:03.

it would be there without the pressure of Bernie Ecclestone. He

:15:03.:15:10.

is a great headmaster. He is including Silverstone, this is what

:15:10.:15:15.

we expect. Put it on to the very best and be proud of what you're

:15:15.:15:19.

doing for Britain. Well done to him because he points the finger and

:15:19.:15:25.

gets it done. Don't feel sorry they him, it is normally more glamourous

:15:25.:15:31.

than this. Sebastian Vettel sitting outside his garage. I think he is

:15:31.:15:34.

listening to team radio rather than music finding out what the latest

:15:34.:15:43.

is. This is the latest. The rain is getting heavier. We have just had a

:15:43.:15:48.

message from the Abu Dhabi circuit, saying send the cars here. Plenty

:15:48.:15:52.

of view on Twitter. "am either only one who gets a lump in my throat

:15:52.:15:57.

when I hear Murray Walker talking about Formula One. What a great

:15:57.:16:03.

man." "I would like to see qualifying restarted and reset. It

:16:04.:16:13.
:16:14.:16:14.

should be fair". "I would like the Mexican wave televised". We will do

:16:14.:16:24.
:16:24.:16:28.

what we can. Lots are messages coming through from the pit lanes.

:16:28.:16:34.

This was from Henry"stop favouring the big teams and get this session

:16:34.:16:42.

going". I support that. Before example people are saying why give

:16:42.:16:49.

Alonso - she has 20 points. We saw what he was able to do from 11th

:16:49.:16:59.
:16:59.:17:05.

the qualifying session from the German MotoGP, 250 brake horse

:17:05.:17:09.

power bike's in torrential rain. There you go! Most of you are

:17:09.:17:14.

telling us that it is sunny where you are. We're going to be

:17:14.:17:17.

disappearing from the BBC HD Channel in just a couple of minutes,

:17:17.:17:27.
:17:27.:17:27.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 68 seconds

:17:27.:18:36.

but we will be continuing on BBC standing around. And they will have

:18:36.:18:41.

discussed the car, any set-up changes they are allowed in these

:18:41.:18:48.

sessions. Then you just have to get back in there and deliver. Nico

:18:48.:18:52.

Rosberg standing there. And the vice-president of motor sport for

:18:52.:18:59.

Mercedes Benz. Rosberg with his ear phones in. Slightly bizarre.

:18:59.:19:04.

hope this will be a qualifying session. If you are watching us on

:19:04.:19:14.
:19:14.:19:16.

the IHD channel, that it will continue on BBC Two. For those of

:19:16.:19:19.

you on BBC Two already, that is Nico Rosberg doing his best to keep

:19:19.:19:24.

the crowd happy. Plenty of people saying they would like Sergio Perez

:19:24.:19:30.

the man to stay at the front. Lewis Hamilton is not far behind him.

:19:30.:19:35.

Half a second behind him, sitting second at the moment. Let's hear

:19:35.:19:39.

from Jonathan Beale with Lee McKenzie.

:19:39.:19:43.

Jonathan, the most exciting thing has been a Mexican wave? I have

:19:43.:19:49.

never seen that. It is a lively crowd here at Silverstone. They

:19:49.:19:54.

have been calling the teams out one by one insisting they do the

:19:54.:20:00.

Mexican wave. The tell us about what has been happening so far. A

:20:00.:20:06.

difficult David Jenson Button? disappointing. He went out on the

:20:06.:20:11.

intermediate tier on Q1. If he never got a chance to warm up.

:20:11.:20:15.

Tried a difference for a variety of things to get him going but it

:20:15.:20:20.

never happened. We brought him into put the new set on and try to

:20:20.:20:30.
:20:30.:20:33.

conserve. We had a yellow flag in the last sector. He is quite

:20:33.:20:39.

philosophical. He is massively disappointed. It things carry on,

:20:39.:20:45.

you might have Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton starting second

:20:45.:20:51.

tomorrow. Do you think because it will go out on track today? I do.

:20:51.:20:56.

According to our screens and the FIA we should go in about 15

:20:56.:21:00.

minutes. Or rather the weather should clear. But we do have a lot

:21:00.:21:04.

of standing water and it does not run like rivers as it does in

:21:04.:21:10.

Brazil. I am confident we will get going again. How do you handle

:21:10.:21:16.

that? Do you wait until other cars go out? You only have six minutes

:21:16.:21:22.

and you have to go out and grin and bear it. Hamilton likes this stuff.

:21:22.:21:25.

Although it is unpredictable he fancies his chances against that

:21:25.:21:33.

environment. I will let you go back out to your Mexican wave.

:21:33.:21:37.

Mexican wave is the talking point at the moment. Lots of messages

:21:37.:21:42.

asking can we get a drivers and Mexican wave. I am not too sure

:21:42.:21:47.

you'll get back today. Keep an eye on what is happening in the garages.

:21:47.:21:52.

We saw a small glimpse in the Lotus garage. A tremendous amount of work.

:21:52.:21:59.

I know you are down there at the moment, what is going on? McCann

:21:59.:22:02.

makes telling Kimi Raikkonen he can move the brake balance. They have

:22:02.:22:09.

taken the floor of the car off and they are looking at wiring damage.

:22:09.:22:14.

They will change the wiring hoping they can fix it because they cannot

:22:14.:22:19.

see any other problem. They are allowed to do that because they are

:22:19.:22:24.

replacing it with the same part. The scrutiny will be there watching

:22:24.:22:34.
:22:34.:22:38.

to make sure nothing is changed on the car. The car is worth around

:22:38.:22:45.

four-tenths of a second. The rain is coming down again and the

:22:45.:22:52.

session wore drag its feet. It is worse conditions now than when they

:22:52.:22:59.

actually put the red flag out. Fraser has said "all this talk

:22:59.:23:02.

about the plank under the car meaning the car are just

:23:02.:23:08.

aquaplaning, can't they just are just the right height"? Every team

:23:08.:23:13.

has that option. You get better aerodynamics performance out of the

:23:13.:23:17.

car the closer to the ground it is. The car goes round the corners

:23:17.:23:27.
:23:27.:23:28.

faster. The dry weather tyres are slick. But I amateur of the front

:23:28.:23:34.

tyre is bigger. When you get there were tier on it goes up again by

:23:34.:23:39.

another four mm. It is catered for within the tyres. But not as far as

:23:39.:23:44.

big puddles our concern. If the driver does not like driving these

:23:44.:23:49.

conditions, they can always come in. If the team can make a wet-weather

:23:49.:23:53.

compromise set up they would make the car hire. It does not mean

:23:53.:24:03.
:24:03.:24:04.

every team in the pit lane has wet weather set up. Tomorrow could be a

:24:04.:24:06.

new date. So what will they do? Do two laps and two people fly off the

:24:06.:24:10.

road and a red flag the race? of work going on in the Lotus

:24:10.:24:17.

garage but no such luxuries for Mercedes. They are relaxing

:24:17.:24:27.
:24:27.:24:39.

themselves at the moment. Ross has back out again, because obviously

:24:39.:24:44.

one of our cars has not qualified to get through yet. The forecast is

:24:44.:24:47.

that it should be stopping within the next 20 minutes, and then we

:24:47.:24:51.

will wait for it to dry out. long do you think we will have to

:24:51.:24:55.

wait? We're hearing that it does not dry up as quickly as it might

:24:55.:25:00.

in a hot climate. The important thing is that we cannot have too

:25:00.:25:04.

much standing water. I would anticipate that it will be three-

:25:04.:25:14.
:25:14.:25:30.

quarters of an hour at least. The it is a bit unfair on those who

:25:30.:25:38.

have got caught out by the weather. But I have been here before, where

:25:38.:25:43.

we have had some pretty nasty incidents, not just here on the

:25:43.:25:47.

tracks, and we want to avoid that. We saw Michael Schumacher's

:25:47.:25:53.

spinning as well. It appeared it was getting a bit too much. Yes,

:25:53.:25:59.

obviously you can voluntarily stop, but we would not be able to have Q3,

:25:59.:26:02.

because nobody would be able to go out in those conditions, so I think

:26:02.:26:06.

it was a sensible decision. Thank you very much for your time. No

:26:06.:26:14.

more Mexican waves, hopefully a bit more running. That's what we want.

:26:14.:26:20.

Let's go up to the commentary box, you can see Nick Hamilton, such a

:26:20.:26:25.

good lad, always with a big smile on his face. Up in the commentary

:26:25.:26:30.

box, it is getting to the point where we just want to see racing.

:26:30.:26:33.

All of the Mexican waves in the world are a fantastic, but there is

:26:33.:26:37.

a palpable frustration down here now. It has gone from being a bit

:26:38.:26:42.

of good old British fun to that not being the case.

:26:42.:26:46.

BEN EDWARDS: Yes, the crowd are doing a fantastic job of keeping

:26:46.:26:50.

themselves entertained, but that is just one small section of the crowd.

:26:50.:26:54.

There are thousands of people over the rest of the circuit who are

:26:54.:26:57.

seem absolutely nothing. They do not get to see the pits, so you

:26:57.:27:02.

have to fill for them. At least the guys just opposite the pits, they

:27:02.:27:12.
:27:12.:27:18.

do have a cover on the grandstand. DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, as you make

:27:18.:27:24.

your way up through the staircase of a racing team, and get into the

:27:24.:27:29.

management, that is your patch. The only saving grace for those around

:27:29.:27:33.

the back of the circuit of course is the large-screen televisions, so

:27:33.:27:37.

they will be seeing what we are seeing right now. But of course

:27:37.:27:39.

they will not be getting the feedback from the drivers and the

:27:39.:27:43.

teams in the pit lanes. But I think we have to just put to one side any

:27:43.:27:48.

frustration. We all understand how the weather works. There's many a

:27:48.:27:52.

day when we plan something with the family, and nature scuppers that.

:27:52.:27:57.

Nature is stronger than human desire, so we have to put up with

:27:57.:28:02.

it. I have been looking on Twitter, and the amount of people saying,

:28:03.:28:07.

welcome back, Murray Walker. I think you should reward them with a

:28:07.:28:12.

few words. Well, what can you do about the weather? We have all been

:28:12.:28:16.

in this situation before many times. We have had to wait for it to clear

:28:17.:28:21.

up, and it has cleared up. The decision has been made to stop the

:28:21.:28:25.

action, you may agree with it or not. I have been longing to tell

:28:25.:28:31.

the story. When I was watching Lee talking to Bernie Ecclestone, as

:28:31.:28:35.

she tried to get into the motor home, it reminded me about years

:28:35.:28:45.

ago, how we used to call it the Kremlin, the FIA motor home. I

:28:45.:28:50.

managed to get into it, and I found that insight, it was a whole lot of

:28:50.:28:55.

subdivided areas. They did not seem to be anybody about. I said,

:28:55.:28:58.

anybody here? And Bernie Ecclestone's voice came from the

:28:58.:29:04.

back and said, it depends who wants to know. I thought that was typical

:29:04.:29:09.

of Bernie Ecclestone! People think he is a very hard man, and he is a

:29:09.:29:13.

tough businessman, no doubt about it, but he is a racer at heart,

:29:14.:29:17.

with a highly-developed sense of humour.

:29:17.:29:20.

DAVID COULTHARD: He seems to be a man of few words when interviewed,

:29:20.:29:23.

but that is not the case when you're with him, so do you think

:29:24.:29:30.

that is just his poker face for the TV stations? Well, I do know that

:29:30.:29:33.

Bernie is an extraordinarily difficult man to interview, a man

:29:33.:29:38.

of few words, as we just saw. But by golly, you have got to keep your

:29:38.:29:44.

wits about you, he has got a razor- sharp mind, the sharpest of anybody

:29:44.:29:50.

I ever knew, with the possible exception of Max Mosley. And when

:29:50.:29:54.

they worked together, you knew you were up against a very formidable

:29:54.:30:01.

duo of people. They shake Formula 1 as it is now. When Formula 1 began,

:30:01.:30:05.

you never really knew whether all of the teams were going to turn up.

:30:05.:30:09.

It was when Bernie Ecclestone became a team owner, with Brabham,

:30:09.:30:11.

that he realised that the team owners were thinking of themselves

:30:12.:30:16.

and not the sport as a whole, and he pulled them all together, add a

:30:16.:30:19.

tease him that has made Formula 1 but it is.

:30:19.:30:25.

BEN EDWARDS: Murray, we have had an amazing start of the season - what

:30:25.:30:30.

is your opinion? You have seen Formula 1 over the years - are we

:30:30.:30:36.

in a golden period? I used to say, until recently, the 1980s were the

:30:36.:30:43.

golden era for me, because we had Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet,

:30:43.:30:47.

Senna, Prost and Schumacher racing against each other. But I think we

:30:47.:30:56.

are in a golden era now, we have never had anything like this before.

:30:56.:31:04.

I have had about a trillion messages on Twitter saying, they

:31:04.:31:10.

want Murray to give them a famous go, go, go. Can you just do one of

:31:10.:31:20.
:31:20.:31:23.

those? All right, watch delights! It is four, three, two, one, and it

:31:23.:31:27.

is Go, Go, go! We are going to take a bit of a walk, but first, some

:31:28.:31:33.

guys chilling out by the bottom of the stairs. Hi, everybody. I must

:31:33.:31:43.
:31:43.:31:48.

point out that these two are here from the Radio 1 back for show. How

:31:48.:31:56.

are you finding it? It has been amazing here. It has been an

:31:56.:32:06.
:32:06.:32:10.

amazing day. The I am listening to you guys, to understand what is

:32:11.:32:18.

happening. They are not practising, it is qualifying. And also, they

:32:18.:32:23.

are not players, their drivers. thing which we noticed, we popped

:32:23.:32:27.

upstairs to have a look out of the back, and you pointed out, in the

:32:27.:32:30.

far distance, the cars going down hangar straight. We could not see

:32:30.:32:35.

them, only the spray, and it looked amazing. It is awesome, it is

:32:35.:32:42.

literally like a wave of water just flying across, and then, this is

:32:42.:32:52.
:32:52.:32:52.

how good this is, within five seconds... The panic to get him out

:32:52.:32:56.

of the bar, to get him back for the link. Do not believe a word of that.

:32:56.:33:00.

This is a conspiracy. They have got a show together on Friday. I want

:33:00.:33:03.

to ask Chris, how do you put up with him, because we cannot shut

:33:03.:33:09.

him up. Jake is brilliant, he's the best thing to happen to the BBC, he

:33:09.:33:14.

really is. Without this man... Imagine if you and David Coulthard

:33:14.:33:19.

had to feel for the last half-an- hour, heaven forbid. Just one quick

:33:19.:33:22.

thing - so many people are watching this, and they are not lucky enough

:33:22.:33:26.

to be able to afford a grandstand ticket, but if people were to save

:33:26.:33:30.

up and come to Formula 1, to see the speed with your own eyes, it

:33:30.:33:35.

puts it into context, doesn't it? Yes, it is like anything. Football

:33:35.:33:40.

is better live than on TV, bands, or anything like that. The

:33:40.:33:44.

atmosphere out there and the crowd, even though they are getting

:33:44.:33:48.

absolutely drenched, spirits are still high, and everybody wants the

:33:48.:33:52.

race to continue, to get back into it. It is awesome. If you have

:33:52.:33:57.

never been, then you need to come - next year. Or Jake is going to take

:33:57.:34:01.

us all out to Abu Dhabi at the end of the season. I can definitely

:34:01.:34:07.

afford that. Do you still have a plane? Was that as in rock'n'roll

:34:07.:34:12.

or as in flying? Watch tomorrow's programme and you will soon know.

:34:12.:34:19.

And would you like to say to Damon Coulthard in the commentary box?!

:34:19.:34:27.

It was actually David! He looks like George McCartney! We have

:34:27.:34:32.

decided to come out and brave the rain. As you can see, it is still

:34:32.:34:36.

quite wet. We saw the sun and we got over-excited, so we thought we

:34:36.:34:39.

would come out and give you a flavour. There are still plenty of

:34:39.:34:43.

people walking up and down, trying to enjoy the atmosphere. We're

:34:43.:34:47.

hoping to walk all the way out of here, up on to a raised area, so

:34:47.:34:51.

you can see the grandstand. While we do that, the diggers get the

:34:51.:34:55.

latest from Ferrari, because Lee McKenzie is with them. First of all,

:34:55.:35:01.

welcome to the British summer. It is not quite the Italian speck!

:35:01.:35:05.

Fernando had a spin, and was lucky to escape - what other conditions

:35:05.:35:11.

like now? Well, I think the forecast says that in five minutes,

:35:11.:35:14.

these showers should stop, and then it all depends on when the track

:35:14.:35:20.

will be open again. Because if the track would be in the correct

:35:20.:35:23.

condition, everything can happen within a few minutes. We need to

:35:23.:35:27.

see how the track will evolve. has been so difficult to understand

:35:27.:35:30.

what has been going on, but that could be the story tomorrow as

:35:30.:35:40.
:35:40.:35:47.

tomorrow we do not know what is going on. Now we need to see it the

:35:47.:35:53.

track will improve. If it does, we can do it. It is worth pointing out

:35:53.:35:58.

what is happening here. This is the area Pirelli tyres used for the

:35:58.:36:03.

weekend. We can see one of the tyres being worked on. It is worth

:36:03.:36:07.

pointing out to the people at home, an intermediate being put on to the

:36:07.:36:12.

rack. This is a huge working environment over the course of a

:36:12.:36:18.

race weekend getting the tyres for the teams? Thousands of tyres. This

:36:18.:36:23.

has to be planned into a work schedule. So these will probably

:36:23.:36:30.

have been made in Italy or even two months ago and then brought here as

:36:30.:36:39.

part of what is needed. Isn't it interesting. For four sets of

:36:39.:36:45.

slicks, not one taker for them. Even more lined up. Nobody is

:36:45.:36:51.

remotely thinking about slick tyres. It is about the wet tyres or the

:36:51.:36:57.

intermediate. The way we are going on, clouds have gone and I think it

:36:57.:37:02.

will dry out quickly. We will see people doing final qualifying on

:37:02.:37:08.

the intermediate tyres. An army of workers sweeping the track. No

:37:08.:37:12.

takers for the slick tyres and we are hoping before long with skies

:37:12.:37:17.

brightening and people sweeping the track, we can get some running.

:37:17.:37:21.

Let's carry on through the paddock. Very few people around compared to

:37:21.:37:28.

normal. Those tyres are all used. They had some dry running yesterday.

:37:29.:37:34.

We will give you a shot of the grandstand. Eddie, you can lead the

:37:34.:37:39.

way through the security gates. You'll need your past to get any

:37:39.:37:44.

work in Formula One. Eddie, you have dropped 50. You know a lot

:37:44.:37:52.

about a man... We are causing chaos here. Let's hear from Lee McKenzie

:37:52.:37:58.

who was with Derek Warwick. We have no 50 notes lying around

:37:58.:38:05.

here. Silverstone is trying to find a lot of investment. Derek it has

:38:05.:38:09.

been a difficult 24 hours at Silverstone, rain was probably the

:38:09.:38:14.

last thing you need it? It would have been nice to get through

:38:14.:38:18.

qualifying so we can move on. We are looking forward to tomorrow. We

:38:18.:38:23.

have done everything we can. We protected the car parks and we can

:38:23.:38:27.

accommodate everybody tomorrow. We're looking forward to it. It is

:38:27.:38:32.

a shame the rain came and practice was halted. But that is the way it

:38:32.:38:39.

is. We just have to work around it. Even I cannot control this. I have

:38:39.:38:45.

spoken to Bernie Ecclestone, and even he cannot control this. He is

:38:45.:38:51.

very supportive over Silverstone, so that means there is a very

:38:51.:38:55.

exceptional circumstances? Even the spectators, I have spoken to the

:38:55.:39:00.

fans and apologise to them. They are supported and understand the

:39:00.:39:04.

situation. They are saying they have had problems getting in. But

:39:04.:39:09.

they are looking forward to tomorrow's race. They are

:39:09.:39:12.

supportive, members are supportive and we are feeling a little bit

:39:12.:39:18.

more relieved than we were yesterday. Yesterday was hard work.

:39:18.:39:22.

Fans have been told to stay away today, is everybody welcome if they

:39:22.:39:28.

have a ticket to Myra? Absolutely. We have tried to protect the car

:39:28.:39:34.

parks today so we can have them here. We have all come for the race.

:39:34.:39:38.

Will looking forward to it tomorrow. It is going to be a good race and

:39:38.:39:43.

mixed conditions. Who is best in mixed conditions but Jenson Button

:39:43.:39:49.

and Lewis Hamilton. We are looking forward to a good British win.

:39:49.:39:53.

would go and find Eddie Jordan and pick up those 50 notes for stabbed

:39:53.:40:02.

I don't think it was a real note. Probably Monopoly money.

:40:02.:40:07.

Derek is the President of the BRDC. They run the circuit and

:40:07.:40:13.

responsible for Silverstone. They have just said, for the race day,

:40:13.:40:17.

that was their focus and they put their attention on that, if you

:40:17.:40:21.

have a ticket, they will do their best to get everyone in the

:40:21.:40:28.

grandstand. And not many sporting events has 100,000 plus. I think

:40:28.:40:32.

the sun is coming through. I think we might have a clear session to

:40:32.:40:39.

finish. Don't say it! Anyway, back to the situation. Everyone should

:40:39.:40:44.

come tomorrow. It will be a spectacular race. It is the first

:40:44.:40:47.

time Silverstone have had this number. It is difficult for them

:40:47.:40:53.

but they are getting through it quite well. Fans are still here

:40:53.:40:58.

waiting outside for an autograph of a driver. This is the brand new

:40:58.:41:03.

Silverstone wing. If you did not see this before, you're not

:41:03.:41:07.

watching the race last year. Wherever we are going, it is a

:41:08.:41:13.

popular place to go. We are going to head in between a couple of

:41:13.:41:17.

buildings to get an idea of how wet the track is. And get Eddie to wave

:41:17.:41:27.

at the fans in the grandstand. If we go down here, it saves going

:41:27.:41:31.

there and getting thrown off because that is called the Paddock

:41:31.:41:36.

Club and not even Eddie and his 50 notes can get us in there. These

:41:36.:41:44.

are the fans, and the people sweeping the track. This is where

:41:44.:41:49.

the drivers will want to maximise the last ounce of the car. So many

:41:49.:41:54.

people here, the top part of the stand has gone and I am not sure

:41:54.:42:00.

many people over there want to wave at you, Jake. Shall we give them a

:42:00.:42:10.

try. I don't think I can do this, it is beyond. I think we are too

:42:10.:42:14.

far away. Maybe you should come over here and do your bit. I'd been

:42:14.:42:21.

you have a better chance of doing it. You are on the PA. If you say

:42:21.:42:30.

hello. Hello, am I on the PA over there? Can we get a wave for the

:42:30.:42:34.

BBC Four stock he got a slight reaction but it is not the reaction

:42:34.:42:41.

he wanted. It gives you an idea of how many people are out there. They

:42:41.:42:44.

are making the decision that perhaps it was best to watch this

:42:44.:42:47.

from the safety of their tent. You have been here as a fan over the

:42:47.:42:53.

years before you came as a racing driver? I came here in 1969 the

:42:54.:42:59.

first time. I wasn't brought, I could not believe the smell, the

:42:59.:43:03.

noise and the whole thing the British Grand Prix years. It is

:43:03.:43:07.

spectacular. When you come once, it absolutely gets into your blood,

:43:07.:43:12.

your system. It is like a drug, there is no way off it will stop

:43:12.:43:17.

you are engulfed by the excitement of what Formula One is. We are so

:43:17.:43:21.

privileged to have been able to do what effectively is a hobby. We

:43:21.:43:27.

have made it into a business and a career. And also, no rain expected

:43:27.:43:31.

at the moment. And there is no rain falling in the paddock at the

:43:31.:43:35.

moment and we hope that remains the case in the pit-lane as well. Many

:43:35.:43:39.

people wouldn't know that is how you started out your motor racing

:43:39.:43:45.

career behind the wheel? Not many people should, it was that poor!

:43:45.:43:52.

Edit start, but I realised quickly I was racing against people like

:43:52.:43:56.

Nigel Mansell, and Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet. They were so

:43:56.:44:00.

brilliant, it was good to have quality drivers like them around

:44:00.:44:06.

because it gave me a lesson, let's get out of here and start a team.

:44:06.:44:10.

What do you think about the new Updates to the Marussia this

:44:10.:44:16.

weekend? I think Marussia would like to have been in Q2. They are

:44:16.:44:21.

getting through the puddles. This is where it starts to get

:44:21.:44:25.

frustrating for us, people at home and in the grandstands. We have

:44:25.:44:29.

seen them out sweeping the circuit. It has not rained for a few minutes

:44:29.:44:34.

but we have not had the green light, the cars are not on the track. It

:44:34.:44:41.

is difficult isn't it? It is drier now than it was probably 10 minutes

:44:41.:44:47.

into the second session? Charlie will now say, the great is just not

:44:47.:44:53.

even... The grid we see there is not real. There will be a new set

:44:53.:44:57.

up, even in the last six minutes they will be queuing up to be first

:44:57.:45:02.

out and they will want to go immediately and get on with it. The

:45:02.:45:07.

problem is, this will be absolutely helter-skelter. It will be

:45:07.:45:12.

frightening to see how many cars. The whole point is to make sure you

:45:12.:45:16.

get a banker in early and then wait it out to make sure a dry line

:45:16.:45:22.

comes along. I don't think we will have qualifying on slicks, it is

:45:22.:45:28.

too wet at the moment. It feels like it is drying up. That is the

:45:28.:45:32.

priority, David isn't it? As the truck drivers, the teams will be in

:45:32.:45:38.

exactly the same position as they work for Q1 and Q2. They have to

:45:38.:45:42.

get the strategy right because it would change when cars are made?

:45:42.:45:47.

DAVID COULTHARD: If I am not mistaken, I understand indication

:45:47.:45:54.

we will be getting a session under way anytime soon. Let's hope so.

:45:54.:46:00.

Professor Watkins, you know him, Eddie? A long time in Formula One?

:46:00.:46:06.

Absolutely, he has done so much for the sport. The introduced the hands

:46:06.:46:11.

system. On drivers all word this protective brace around their neck

:46:11.:46:21.
:46:21.:46:22.

and he was the man who put it in. It has proved to be so successful.

:46:22.:46:32.
:46:32.:46:35.

It is the KERS system. -- HANS system. He was the guy who brought

:46:35.:46:39.

with Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone, the safety regulations

:46:39.:46:43.

in place for a start you sort the safety helmets on Mark Webber, the

:46:43.:46:49.

kind of protection drivers have now is unprecedented. If you ask a

:46:49.:46:53.

Formula One driver to go on to a circuit and dried up to 200 miles

:46:53.:47:00.

an hour, you are not taking the necessary risks. They have street

:47:00.:47:04.

sweepers to clean the circuit. You have to say now, looking at this

:47:04.:47:10.

car driving round it is different to half an hour, 45 minutes ago.

:47:10.:47:14.

Spare a thought for Perez. What do you think he is thinking about at

:47:14.:47:19.

this moment? Does he think it is unfair? He has done his job and

:47:19.:47:23.

done it perfectly well. Why should it be taken away from him? I think

:47:23.:47:29.

it is a valid argument. Seven minutes past the hour, we have been

:47:29.:47:36.

told the session will start. This is the news we have wanted? We will

:47:36.:47:46.

run the remaining six minutes and 19 seconds of Q2. For people who

:47:46.:47:51.

missed the early stages, we had our first qualifying session and Jenson

:47:51.:47:56.

Button went out. We lost several of the others who would more normally

:47:56.:48:04.

expect to go out in the first part of qualifying, and then we were

:48:04.:48:10.

just over halfway through Q2 and we saw the likes of Maldonado, di

:48:10.:48:16.

Resta, Milagro Rozon, Michael Schumacher, Massa and Bruno Senna

:48:16.:48:22.

in the drop zone. They'd place for Webber And 10th for Vettel. It

:48:22.:48:27.

looks like we will get some action going. The track is drying up and

:48:27.:48:37.

the marshals have done a great job. DAVID COULTHARD: Drivers getting

:48:37.:48:45.

themselves warmed up. Lewis Hamilton getting his HANS in place.

:48:45.:48:51.

It looks like we will get some action once again. The one man who

:48:51.:48:59.

won't be in his car is Timo Glock. He did not make it out of the first

:48:59.:49:02.

part of qualifying. We have a wonderful moment of you slipping

:49:02.:49:07.

and sliding round the circuit. Give us an idea of how difficult it was?

:49:07.:49:14.

If that is the last lap, I was sideways the whole of the last

:49:14.:49:20.

corner. But in general, it is very difficult. The ice is the big one.

:49:21.:49:28.

I just lost it. When you touch the curve, it is impossible. At least

:49:28.:49:35.

stopped before the wall, so that it was good. It is a shame. We were

:49:35.:49:40.

just on a to B in Q2. But the rain came 30 seconds too early for us.

:49:40.:49:45.

think it could be to your advantage tomorrow. You have been able to

:49:45.:49:49.

keep your wet tyres and probably wouldn't have been much further up

:49:49.:49:53.

than you already are. It could be an absolute advantage to you.

:49:54.:49:58.

would have been a massive boost for the team. Especially for me after a

:49:58.:50:06.

week we had. We were just a few seconds up on the split time and my

:50:06.:50:12.

lap time. Up until Hangar Straight. I knew it would have been enough to

:50:12.:50:18.

Q2. Then Nicene the rain coming and it was raining down Hangar Straight,

:50:18.:50:28.
:50:28.:50:32.

I lost everything. Otherwise we smaller teams. Yes, but you know,

:50:32.:50:38.

qualifying is one thing, but we all know, and we say it time and again,

:50:38.:50:42.

that the points are won on Sunday. And actually, conditions like this

:50:42.:50:45.

will give them their best opportunity to score a point. They

:50:45.:50:50.

have got to stay running, whatever happens, keep out of trouble, and

:50:50.:50:57.

be clever with the tyre choice. Is that how your team focuses? Yes, it

:50:57.:51:01.

gives us more possibilities. But on the other side, if everyone has

:51:01.:51:06.

equal conditions, and it is still wet, then the gap is still there to

:51:06.:51:11.

the top guys. So, they need to make mistakes, and we need to keep clean

:51:11.:51:14.

on track, that's for sure. But it would have been a boost for the

:51:14.:51:18.

team, they have been great. But we have to get over it and make the

:51:18.:51:23.

best of tomorrow. I know that you did not race in Valencia, but are

:51:23.:51:29.

you 100 % back to normal now? I would say I am feeling OK again.

:51:29.:51:33.

It was tough at Valencia to sit at the airport waiting for the flight

:51:33.:51:37.

when everyone else was starting the race. But these things happen, and

:51:37.:51:41.

I am back to normal shape again. spent quite a lot of time with

:51:41.:51:45.

Caterham today, because they were talking about a raft of upgrades.

:51:45.:51:52.

Sadly for them, things did not work out, because of the weather - what

:51:52.:51:57.

about Marussia and their developments this season? Yes, we

:51:57.:52:04.

lead a big step forward as well, but everybody in front of us is

:52:04.:52:07.

doing it at the same time, so it makes it difficult for us to show

:52:07.:52:11.

it. But the car felt pretty good at the weekend, and I think it is a

:52:11.:52:14.

little step forward, but we need to make another one, and that's what

:52:14.:52:19.

we'll working on. Was KERS the biggest disadvantage, by not having

:52:19.:52:27.

that? It is definitely a big advantage, having it, it is up to

:52:27.:52:32.

five tenths, I would say. But we do not have it at the moment, so we

:52:32.:52:35.

have do not think about it. We have to concentrating on getting the

:52:35.:52:40.

platform right. Regarding tomorrow, let's start focusing on the race.

:52:40.:52:44.

We are hoping that this qualifying session will soon be backed up -

:52:44.:52:47.

does it excite you when you know that the weather conditions are

:52:47.:52:51.

going to be dodgy at this high- speed circuit? Yes, it is a great

:52:52.:52:58.

circuit. If you see the fans, they are unbelievable. In these

:52:58.:53:02.

conditions, to stay here, I hope they will have a great show

:53:02.:53:09.

tomorrow, and if it is mixed conditions, that gives us a chance.

:53:09.:53:15.

We are in no danger of getting a suntan. Welcome to Britain. Good

:53:15.:53:19.

luck tomorrow in the race. A good guy, working really hard. He has

:53:19.:53:23.

had a tough weekend. They have had awful technical and reliability

:53:24.:53:29.

problems this weekend. Yes, but you know, what I was so impressed with

:53:29.:53:36.

him about was that KERS is half the second, and to go out and qualify

:53:36.:53:41.

knowing that you have not got it, how could you motivate yourself?

:53:41.:53:45.

Let's talk about the teams that have got it, the team's cars and

:53:45.:53:48.

pulling out of the garage. There are still two or three minutes to

:53:48.:53:53.

go, so why on earth would you send your car out to queue at the front?

:53:53.:53:57.

I think they have now made a mistake. That Williams is going out,

:53:57.:54:01.

yes, he is first in the queue, but it is not going to rain again, or

:54:01.:54:06.

at least it does not look like it. So, as the session goes on, it is

:54:06.:54:11.

going to get drier and drier, and all he's going to do is to drive

:54:11.:54:20.

the track for the other colours, -- for the other cars, while drying --

:54:21.:54:26.

while losing temperature in the tyres. Over at McLaren, they are

:54:26.:54:30.

taking it easy at the moment. What would be the reason for going out

:54:30.:54:34.

early? The reason would be if there was a likelihood of more rain, to

:54:34.:54:38.

try to get the best out of the track as it is at the moment,

:54:38.:54:40.

because they're hoping that some of the water will have gone away.

:54:40.:54:45.

Clearly, I do not see that. You need to have as many cars are not

:54:45.:54:49.

as possible, because that will create a race line. Once you have

:54:49.:54:52.

got the racing line, then very quickly you will see the guys

:54:52.:55:02.
:55:02.:55:02.

coming on to slicks. As you can see, the tyres are on to deal with the

:55:02.:55:06.

wet weather. Murrary Walker, David Coulthard and Ben Edwards are up in

:55:06.:55:10.

the commentary box. Finally we can enjoy a session.

:55:10.:55:14.

BEN EDWARDS: So, the cars are at the end of the pit lane, and Pastor

:55:14.:55:21.

Maldonado is going to be first out on the circuit. Sergio Perez is

:55:21.:55:25.

fastest at the moment in Q2, which will get under way with just over

:55:25.:55:29.

six minutes to go. Hamilton is currently second. Jean-Eric Vergne,

:55:30.:55:38.

in the Toro Rosso, a surprising fourth. It seems as though

:55:38.:55:42.

Raikkonen is raring to go, it looks as though they have repaired the

:55:43.:55:51.

KERS issue. Webber is currently eighth. Vettel is tenth. In the

:55:51.:56:00.

drop zone currently, Maldonado, di Resta, Grosjean, Michael Schumacher,

:56:00.:56:06.

Felipe Massa, Alonso and Bruno Senna. Those are the guys who are

:56:06.:56:09.

more desperate than the top 10 at the moment, because they are trying

:56:09.:56:13.

to get into that top 10. And we are just hearing that actually,

:56:13.:56:21.

Raikkonen's car has not been repaired.

:56:21.:56:31.

RADIO: Like we said, it is just about getting a lap on the board.

:56:31.:56:41.
:56:41.:56:42.

Two people on Pinter's -- on inters at the moment. David, we saw

:56:42.:56:46.

Hamilton leaving the pits on full wets - what on earth are they doing

:56:46.:56:50.

that for, and destroying this set of tyres that they may need for

:56:50.:56:56.

tomorrow? Where is the advantage? They are already second on the grid.

:56:56.:56:59.

DAVID COULTHARD: Simply, they do not know how much the track is

:56:59.:57:04.

going to improve over these last six minutes. With the full wets,

:57:04.:57:08.

you're able to maintain the heat and get the heat much easier than

:57:08.:57:13.

you can with an intermediate, which has a much smaller tread depth,

:57:13.:57:16.

therefore you do not get the block movement and therefore you do not

:57:16.:57:22.

get the heat in the tyre. Red Bull have chosen another strategy, they

:57:22.:57:28.

have also gone for the full wet tyres. The Big Issue is because you

:57:28.:57:34.

have lots of curves between the main corners, curving your way

:57:35.:57:39.

between Maggotts and Becketts, and there's still plumes of water

:57:39.:57:45.

coming off the circuit. We will find out in the next five-and-a-

:57:45.:57:52.

half minutes. But I think they could well be on the right tyre.

:57:52.:58:02.
:58:02.:58:03.

They will get three laps, if they get a clear run. It is very wet, as

:58:03.:58:13.
:58:13.:58:13.

you can see. It is a question of how much standing water there is.

:58:13.:58:16.

Look at the big correction for Grosjean, I think it is, slipping

:58:16.:58:22.

and sliding around. Gary, let's get your thoughts - it looks as though

:58:22.:58:25.

it could be difficult to go quicker than what they have already

:58:26.:58:31.

achieved in the earlier part of Q2. Anderson yes, and going out on the

:58:31.:58:41.
:58:41.:58:42.

full wets is what I would have done. RADIO: Still a lot of spray. That's

:58:42.:58:50.

good, sounds like we are a on the right tyre. Definitely, quite

:58:50.:58:56.

extreme at the moment. GARY ANDERSON: Yes, that's what I

:58:56.:59:03.

would have done as well. Hamilton has gone out on the full wets. He

:59:03.:59:08.

came out of the garage and ended up behind about 12 cars, all of them

:59:08.:59:18.
:59:18.:59:19.

which are slower than him. One of the Ferraris went out late, one of

:59:19.:59:23.

the Red Bulls went out late, so they are in the right position on

:59:23.:59:28.

the track. We are seeing Sauber making a change, taking the

:59:28.:59:33.

intermediates off, and putting the full wets on. We think the full

:59:33.:59:39.

wets are the ones to go for. Currently, Romain Grosjean needs to

:59:39.:59:45.

find a bit of time, because he is down in the drop zone. He has set a

:59:45.:59:50.

new fastest first sector, faster than anybody so far. So it does

:59:50.:59:54.

look as though we're going to see improvements on the times set

:59:54.:00:02.

previously. Yes, you can see the line basin. -- you can see the line

:00:02.:00:07.

there. The drivers will be looking out for the train tracks, and

:00:07.:00:12.

driving the car down it, because, quite simply, you pick up more grip.

:00:12.:00:16.

This is going to be an exciting few minutes. High-stakes of course.

:00:16.:00:21.

Track position is vitally important, because even if it is wet tomorrow,

:00:21.:00:24.

you do not want to be running in the spray of the cars in front,

:00:24.:00:29.

losing visibility. Just one mistake in these conditions, it is so easy

:00:29.:00:33.

to throw a lap away. Romain Grosjean, one of the least

:00:33.:00:40.

experienced drivers out there, he only did a few Grand Prix in 2009.

:00:40.:00:44.

But he has been so strong since his comeback. He was unlucky last time

:00:44.:00:48.

out with the alternator problem last time out in Valencia. It was

:00:48.:00:52.

the same problem that put Sebastian Vettel out of the race. But he has

:00:52.:00:56.

qualified consistently well this season has Sebastian Grosjean. He

:00:56.:00:59.

has gone fastest. So, the conditions are better, and that

:00:59.:01:03.

will give everybody who was not in the top 10 a big boost. And of

:01:03.:01:11.

course, the person who was fastest, Perez, will have to do it all again.

:01:11.:01:16.

DAVID COULTHARD: Rosberg getting some wheelspin as he gets up on to

:01:16.:01:26.

the kerb. Was he on a time to lap at that point? He was. So, that lap

:01:26.:01:30.

has gone. He will have to align it up again through the last turn, and

:01:30.:01:36.

he will be left with one flying lap to do his time. Vettel goes third

:01:36.:01:45.

fastest, a lot more secure than where he was. Michael Schumacher is

:01:45.:01:49.

down in 16th, but he has just set the fastest middle sector. He is

:01:49.:01:54.

having to work hard at this to try to get into the top 10, but he goes

:01:54.:02:02.

fastest! He has only ever had one pole position at Silverstone. He

:02:02.:02:05.

cannot get pole position in this session, but what he can do is get

:02:05.:02:15.
:02:15.:02:15.

into the top 10. And Webber has now gone fastest! Only one minute to go

:02:15.:02:20.

in Q2. DAVID COULTHARD: And that's a good

:02:21.:02:26.

lap from Massa in the Ferrari. It is all going to be about each

:02:26.:02:32.

driver's last flying lap. We have Lewis Hamilton still to finish his

:02:32.:02:38.

lap, he is currently running... He is just coming through the Becketts

:02:38.:02:43.

section, so we will be able to see how his lap is unfolding. Here we

:02:43.:02:46.

have Maldonado, looking for a middle line as he comes down into

:02:46.:02:53.

Club corner. He is trying to find the grip. The rubber is on the

:02:53.:02:57.

racing line from previous races around the track. It does get

:02:57.:03:01.

washed away of course with the rain. He goes sixth fastest for the

:03:01.:03:05.

moment. But as you said, who is going to be last to cross the line

:03:05.:03:10.

here? Senna is going to get another lap. Wigan to see Ricardo in the

:03:10.:03:15.

background. Alonso has gone over the line, but Hamilton has gone

:03:15.:03:21.

fastest! Lewis Hamilton has gone fastest. But he was the first car

:03:21.:03:24.

to see the chequered flag, and we have got several still out on quick

:03:24.:03:32.

laps. Vettel has done two greens in this sector, but he finishes in

:03:32.:03:37.

seventh position. So, that was a great lap by Lewis Hamilton,

:03:37.:03:47.
:03:47.:03:50.

clearly. Kimi Raikkonen just trying to get some grip and

:03:50.:03:56.

traction. He is about to cross the line. This will not be good enough,

:03:56.:04:01.

he is losing heaps of time in this last sector. He has gone sixth, so

:04:01.:04:06.

he is in the top 10 at the moment, with a few cars still to finish

:04:06.:04:10.

their lap. Hamilton is certainly safe. Paul di Resta desperately

:04:10.:04:15.

trying to get himself into the top 10. Big slide coming into Vale. Now,

:04:15.:04:20.

struggling to get traction as he comes through Club corner. Is there

:04:20.:04:25.

any chance? He has a personal bests in the first two sectors. He has

:04:25.:04:30.

done it, just, into 9th. Is that going to be enough? How many more

:04:30.:04:40.
:04:40.:04:47.

two corners. We have a Lotus in the gravel. Is that Grosjean? That will

:04:47.:04:51.

will give us a waved yellow. The cars will have to slow down. They

:04:51.:04:55.

cannot do their best sector on this lap. That doesn't stop them putting

:04:55.:05:00.

in a couple of good sectors in sector one and two. That car is

:05:00.:05:03.

going nowhere. Grosjean is in the top ten at the

:05:03.:05:08.

moment, but Alonso isn't. Here comes Fernando Alonso to cross and

:05:08.:05:13.

he has just got in there in ninth place. So if his last sector was

:05:13.:05:17.

slower than what he had previously done he should be OK, but that will

:05:17.:05:20.

be something that we looked at and Paul di Resta is out by the looks

:05:20.:05:30.
:05:30.:05:32.

of things. Kobayashi is out. We've got Rosberg, Ricciardo, and and

:05:33.:05:37.

Jean-Eric Vergne and Perez has found himself down in 17th and out

:05:37.:05:41.

of qualifying. What a turn of fortune and Grosjean out of the

:05:41.:05:46.

qualifying. He might have got the fifth fastest time, but now he has

:05:46.:05:52.

beached it, he can't play any part in qualifying. He had done a good

:05:52.:05:56.

lap so that's a great shame for Grosjean. Let's see what happened,

:05:56.:05:59.

David. Well, this is a run-down through

:05:59.:06:03.

Vale. Look at the standing water and he locked the rear axle on the

:06:03.:06:07.

down change so that's all gone wrong in the braking phase and that

:06:07.:06:14.

could be brought on by, you can see, nice drift, while it lasts.

:06:14.:06:22.

Ah, a massive amount of lock. gravel trap got the better of him.

:06:22.:06:28.

A lot of the modern circuits which have a tarmac run-off, but

:06:28.:06:32.

Silverstone is one of the old tracks and when you make a mistake,

:06:32.:06:36.

you pay the penalty. Romain Grosjean will be starting

:06:36.:06:40.

tenth as a result of that because he is into the top ten, but he is

:06:40.:06:44.

out of qualifying because he has put the car into the gravel trap

:06:44.:06:48.

and disappointingly Paul di Resta who had his best qualifying

:06:48.:06:52.

performance here 12 months ago has been knocked out. It is Paul di

:06:52.:06:58.

Resta out. Kobayashi, Rosberg, Ricciardo...

:06:58.:07:08.
:07:08.:07:19.

TEAM RADIO: P 11. Senna and Vergne and Perez is out.

:07:19.:07:24.

Romain Grosjean's Lotus is being carried off the circuit and we will

:07:24.:07:29.

look that again in a moment with Eddie Jordan. The talking point is

:07:29.:07:34.

the man, Paul di Resta, he was saying a moment ago, "I thought

:07:34.:07:38.

there were yellow flags." Explain that.

:07:38.:07:41.

It will take sometime for the stewards to be able to understand

:07:41.:07:46.

if somebody had gone quicker in a yellow flag situation, but the

:07:46.:07:50.

problem is, will it be within the time frame that Paul di Resta needs

:07:50.:07:54.

to get his chance to go back out again? He is in that terrible

:07:54.:07:58.

position where he is 11th and had somebody broken the rules and went

:07:58.:08:03.

quicker under the yellow yellow flag, he would be in the last

:08:03.:08:09.

shootout for the Q3. I feel sorry for for Paul. It is a victim of the

:08:09.:08:12.

circumstances. Alonso just sneaking through to the

:08:12.:08:16.

final part of qualifying. Paul di Resta got knocked down to 11th

:08:16.:08:20.

place. There were yellow flags at the time and that means that you

:08:20.:08:25.

have to show your car has slowed down. If Fernando's car doesn't

:08:25.:08:30.

show that, he may have that time taken away. It is easy to do in

:08:30.:08:34.

these conditions, eddie? One you touch the side of the kerb, off you

:08:34.:08:40.

go and you wind up there, in the middle of the grass.

:08:40.:08:42.

Let's see Romain Grosjean struggling to keep his car on the

:08:42.:08:48.

track. Let's Talk to a man who will start 16th... Last on the grid?

:08:48.:08:56.

Last on the grid. I had a grid penalty.

:08:56.:08:59.

He starts last. I guess in these conditions, if you have to start

:08:59.:09:05.

last at a Grand Prix, it is not a bad place to to do that in the rain

:09:05.:09:10.

tomorrow? It is not a bad place, but it is not a good place. The car

:09:10.:09:15.

was feeling good and we were thinking in ten minutes it could

:09:15.:09:21.

have been a good possibility. We wasted two laps. High a bit of

:09:21.:09:27.

spray and on the other hand, it is always difficult to judge the track

:09:27.:09:33.

in these conditions. It is a shame. We saw you at the sharp end of the

:09:33.:09:38.

grid for a long time during this earlier session in Q1. Where have

:09:38.:09:44.

you found that extra speed or is there new updates with this car?

:09:44.:09:49.

don't have any extra speed. The rain makes the cars more even. So

:09:49.:09:58.

we are less far from the top teams. Just talk to us about the penalty

:09:58.:10:03.

that we know that you have got on the grid tomorrow, it was for an

:10:03.:10:10.

incident in Valencia. How much did you learn in that moment? Well, it

:10:10.:10:17.

was a mistake, you know. Senna was in front. It was a mistake. I will

:10:17.:10:21.

not do anymore, that's for sure. That's it. That's another story I

:10:21.:10:24.

would say. OK. And what are you looking

:10:24.:10:27.

forward to tomorrow? It will be tough starting from the back, but

:10:27.:10:31.

great fans here? We never know what's going to happen mere with

:10:31.:10:35.

the weather so hopefully it will be wet and dry and wet. It might be

:10:35.:10:38.

quite interesting and making things more easy for me!

:10:38.:10:42.

Thank you very much for joining us. We will let you go and chat to the

:10:42.:10:48.

rest of the world's media. A young guy who learned a lesson

:10:48.:10:52.

crashing two weeks ago. He takes a penalty here? The stewards at the

:10:52.:10:56.

time were right. He won't make that mistake again and if you learn by

:10:56.:11:00.

your mistakes, you have a positive outlook going forward. I like this

:11:00.:11:04.

driver. He is going to be good. Right, let's head up to the

:11:04.:11:06.

commentary box, we were talking about Fernando Alonso and we leave

:11:07.:11:10.

at the end there when he set the time that got him into the final

:11:10.:11:13.

part of qualifying, it wasn't his fastest sector and that's

:11:13.:11:19.

important? If they can prove that, he will be allowed to keep that

:11:19.:11:23.

time so he is in the top ten. There is no rushing around to appeal

:11:23.:11:28.

against a possible disqualification. It looks as if the top ten or

:11:28.:11:33.

Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, in

:11:33.:11:38.

theory Grosjean, but he is not allowed to run because he went off.

:11:38.:11:42.

Both Lotuses made it into the top ten. And then Nico Hulkenberg and

:11:42.:11:46.

we have a Williams in there in Maldonado and Senna failing to get

:11:47.:11:52.

through to Q3 and it is his team- mate, Maldonado, who is determined

:11:52.:11:55.

to be first out on to the track. He loves being at the end of the pit

:11:55.:12:05.
:12:05.:12:06.

lane there. No one is chasing him, that's

:12:06.:12:10.

interesting, David? They went and queued up risking temperatures

:12:10.:12:15.

thinking that others would be doing something similar, but with a ten

:12:15.:12:18.

minute session and no sign of any obvious rain coming in, may the

:12:18.:12:21.

others, the others are taking the view that, "Well, let's keep

:12:21.:12:25.

everything nice and warm. Get ourselves a clean line. Give the

:12:25.:12:31.

driver every opportunity with fuel to use every lap available in this

:12:31.:12:34.

session." It looks like Lewis Hamilton went out there on the full

:12:34.:12:41.

wet tyre. We have Maldonado out on the intermediate. The green is the

:12:41.:12:44.

intermediate and the blue is the full wet. Maldonado is getting his

:12:44.:12:48.

eye in to see whether it is clear enough. It does look as if there is

:12:48.:12:52.

a bit of standing water in patches and that's really the killer for

:12:52.:12:56.

the intermediate. It works well where you can get contact with the

:12:56.:13:01.

tarmac, but anywhere where you have the rivers going across, it fills

:13:01.:13:09.

the thread depth. TEAM RADIO: No more rain so far. So

:13:09.:13:14.

the track will get faster and faster and we will look after the

:13:14.:13:22.

tyres. We will keep you updated. Can you

:13:22.:13:29.

acknowledge? That's the race engineer for

:13:29.:13:33.

Maldonado giving him a series of instructions.

:13:33.:13:36.

Very, very clear the message. That's what the driver wants. He

:13:36.:13:43.

knows what the team expect of him. He He knows how many laps when they

:13:43.:13:46.

expect him to deliver the lap time and that will be at the end of this

:13:46.:13:52.

run, so they will be building confidence, we see a huge amount of

:13:52.:14:01.

oversteer from Mark Webber. DRS a still disabled. It puts them a long

:14:01.:14:07.

way down at the theent of the straights, but it is the same for

:14:07.:14:14.

everyone, but not all the engines to working to a much lower RPM, the

:14:14.:14:19.

teams have more to worry about - keeping the cars on the track.

:14:19.:14:23.

We are into the final minutes of qualifying. Gary, give us your

:14:24.:14:28.

thoughts going into the laps? think right now, Lewis Hamilton has

:14:28.:14:32.

just come in and he is putting intermediates on. He went out with

:14:32.:14:40.

the full full wets. Now the water has moved and Red Bulls have the

:14:40.:14:49.

intermediates on. Most people will need to be on the track at at right

:14:50.:14:55.

time at the end of the session. There is a fair bit of black cloud

:14:55.:15:01.

overhead again. The Venezuelan who was on pole position earlier on in

:15:01.:15:05.

Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton was fastest that day, but had his time

:15:05.:15:08.

taken away and it was this young man who managed to therefore,

:15:08.:15:11.

inherit pole, but went on to take a tremendous victory.

:15:11.:15:20.

TEAM RADIO: Michael, we believe we can see heavy rain on the radar,

:15:20.:15:22.

but it will be after Q3 at the moment.

:15:22.:15:25.

That threat of rain, that big, big black cloud, let's hope it does

:15:25.:15:29.

hold off, but for Williams, the home circuit as it is for the

:15:29.:15:33.

British teams, the eight British Formula One teams involved, but

:15:33.:15:41.

this Sil this Silverstone circuit means so much. Their first pole was

:15:41.:15:44.

at Silverstone. We had Michael Schumacher and Kimi

:15:44.:15:48.

Raikkonen who are both on the full wet. They have gone quickest in the

:15:48.:15:54.

first sector. Kimi Raikkonen is the fastest man in the middle sector.

:15:54.:15:58.

Alonso is on the intermediate tyre. So if we believe that Michael

:15:58.:16:03.

Schumacher and and Kimi Raikkonen are on the full full lap, they will

:16:03.:16:07.

need to get the intermediates on and that will give them restricted

:16:07.:16:10.

time to find their way around on that tyre.

:16:10.:16:15.

Maldonado sets the pace. Raikkonen is continuing on this lap. Now if

:16:15.:16:18.

they were going to bail out, you would have thought they would have

:16:18.:16:24.

done it and he is five seconds slower than Maldonado. Felipe Massa

:16:24.:16:30.

has gone fastest and that's a quick lap from Felipe Massa on his

:16:30.:16:35.

intermediates and and Michael Schumacher has stayed out there.

:16:35.:16:39.

He stayed out. A late and regretful miscall there to get Michael in

:16:39.:16:43.

because the evidence is that the intermediate is the fastest tyre.

:16:43.:16:47.

Just as I speak, no, he has gone fastest!

:16:47.:16:51.

I should have had a look at the sector times before questioning

:16:51.:16:57.

that! Alonso goes quicker still. He goes faster still on the

:16:57.:17:01.

intermediates. Alonso is the championship leader. Sebastian

:17:01.:17:05.

Vettel is sixth fastest, slithering and sliding.

:17:05.:17:10.

He dropped the rear axle there. Look how tentive he is as he tries

:17:10.:17:15.

to build the speed, oversteer as much as you like on the run out

:17:15.:17:20.

across the start/finish line. It puts him third at the moment. It is

:17:20.:17:25.

1.2 seconds slower than Alonso. Mark Webber is on a lap as well.

:17:25.:17:31.

There is the other Red Bull. Let's see where this puts Mark Webber. He

:17:31.:17:36.

is still eighth, he is about to go on to a lap. He hadn't set a time

:17:36.:17:45.

yet. Alonso is the fastest. We are riding here with Maldonado. Let's

:17:45.:17:55.
:17:55.:17:55.

listen up here. TEAM RADIO: Michael, Alonso is the

:17:55.:17:59.

quickest car. A tyre change at the end of this lap. A tyre change at

:17:59.:18:09.

the end of this lap We are listening to that that

:18:09.:18:13.

throttle control. Schumacher will be in for intermediates, but he

:18:13.:18:18.

won't have the run in on the tire that Maldonado -- tyre that

:18:18.:18:23.

Maldonado had. Raikkonen is in for the intermediates. But they are

:18:23.:18:30.

fresh intermediates. Alonso is eight tenths quicker.

:18:30.:18:33.

Ferrari looking like they have got the right choice of tyres at the

:18:33.:18:37.

right moment. It will come down to this last couple of laps with over

:18:37.:18:41.

three minutes to go. If Alonso can continue the form he has shown in

:18:41.:18:48.

the first two sectors, he shall go quickest. And there you go, one

:18:48.:18:53.

second faster than his team-mate. Ferrari haven't had a pole in 31

:18:53.:18:57.

races. It is a long, long time since Ferrari were on pole. There

:18:57.:19:01.

is an opportunity for them to do it here, but Red Bull are fighting.

:19:01.:19:05.

Sebastian Vettel had a slow middle sector so it will come down to to

:19:05.:19:11.

who will get another timed after about this one is the -- so the

:19:11.:19:15.

pressure is on. He is in third position currently

:19:15.:19:21.

behind the two Ferraris. Felipe Massa backing up his team-mate

:19:21.:19:29.

after a difficult start to the season for Felipe Massa. Things

:19:29.:19:31.

improving since Monaco when he made changes to the car. He has been

:19:31.:19:34.

able to drive it harder since then and although not everything has

:19:34.:19:40.

gone according to plan, he has been much more on the pace. Webber is

:19:40.:19:46.

second splitting the two Ferraris now. Alonso, Felipe Massa, Webber.

:19:46.:19:49.

Over two minutes remain in the final part of the qualifying.

:19:49.:19:54.

Michael Schumacher has returned to the track. He will get a flying lap

:19:54.:20:02.

on his intermediates. We see Felipe Massa coming into Club Corner.

:20:02.:20:06.

So Felipe Massa who is third and we're watching him now come through

:20:06.:20:10.

the final corner as he just about holds on to it. He goes second. No

:20:10.:20:14.

quicker than Alonso. He is about half a second slower than the

:20:14.:20:18.

previous lap that Fernando Alonso did. Alonso not on such a fast lap

:20:18.:20:22.

this time around and now what's Lewis Hamilton up to? Winner in the

:20:22.:20:27.

wet in 2008. A pole winner in 2007. Let's see whether this lap is going

:20:27.:20:32.

to do it for him? Across the line he goes. He is not. He is sixth

:20:32.:20:36.

fastest and let's see now whether he can pick that up in the

:20:36.:20:41.

remaining few seconds, just a minute and a quarter to go, it is a

:20:41.:20:46.

Ferrari, one, two at the moment. Well, will it last? Mark Webber has

:20:46.:20:50.

gone fastest of all in the first two sectors. If he can keep it

:20:50.:20:55.

together. He is going into Stowe Corner, not far behind Sebastian

:20:55.:20:59.

Vettel, but Mark Webber is turning all the sectors purple. This is

:20:59.:21:04.

looking like it is a good lap. Vettel has backed out. Vettel will

:21:04.:21:08.

have one lap if he is going to improve on the fourth place.

:21:08.:21:10.

We have got Mark Webber going across the line. Let's see what he

:21:10.:21:20.
:21:20.:21:21.

Mark Webber has gone fastest. 1:51.7. Trying to take pole

:21:21.:21:26.

position again at Silverstone. It would be Red Bull's 4th pole

:21:26.:21:33.

position in a role. Alonso was going faster again. The Ferrari is

:21:33.:21:37.

still fast. Mark Webber is pushing. It will come down to this final lap.

:21:37.:21:44.

Alonso was not giving up. Second fastest at the moment. What is

:21:44.:21:46.

Maldonado what to? I think he is going to improve but not

:21:46.:21:52.

necessarily challenging for the front row. Lewis Hamilton is doing

:21:52.:21:58.

his fastest. More than one second down on Mark Webber's first sector.

:21:58.:22:03.

It looks like Lewis Hamilton will be out of the battle for pole

:22:03.:22:07.

position. And it is starting to rain once again. Big, heavy clouds

:22:07.:22:11.

overhead having an effect. That could stymie the attempts of

:22:11.:22:15.

everyone else to go faster than Mark Webber. Mark Webber on top.

:22:15.:22:22.

Alonso, his middle sector is not so good. The and he has done! No, he

:22:22.:22:30.

has caught it. -- and he has spun. Hamilton is six. Michael Schumacher

:22:30.:22:33.

has gone faster in the middle sector, as has Sebastian Vettel.

:22:34.:22:39.

Some changes possible on this last lap. Mark Webber fastest and Alonso

:22:39.:22:44.

goes fastest for Ferrari! It is going to be so close. Michael

:22:44.:22:50.

Schumacher goes third. Pushing Hamilton down to seventh place.

:22:50.:22:55.

Alonso fastest. What about Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber?

:22:55.:23:00.

And the Red Bulls comeback? He was quickest on this second sector. --

:23:00.:23:09.

can it be Red Bulls comeback. 4th, but can Mark Webber do it? He

:23:09.:23:14.

cannot. He is second. It looks like Alonso, a winner of the 2011

:23:14.:23:19.

British Grand Prix, has taken pole position for Ferrari. Singapore

:23:19.:23:24.

2010 was the last time that he was on pole position. But Fernando

:23:24.:23:30.

Alonso has done it. It is their first pole at Silverstone since

:23:30.:23:35.

2003 and their third pole position at this track. The championship

:23:35.:23:39.

leader delivers, and the margin, absolutely minuscule over Mark

:23:39.:23:47.

Webber at the end. Just a few thousandths of a second. It is a

:23:47.:23:55.

great effort for Mercedes with Schumacher in third. 84 Hamilton,

:23:55.:24:03.

which is a real surprise in these conditions. -- 844 Hamilton. 94

:24:03.:24:09.

Hulkenberg and 10 for Grosjean, not allowed to run for qualifying. --

:24:09.:24:13.

9th for Hulkenberg. People query whether Fernando Alonso is the best

:24:13.:24:18.

driver in Formula One. I do not query it. Like the key is and he

:24:18.:24:21.

has just proved it again. This car started off badly at the beginning

:24:21.:24:27.

of the season, and it has come good, brilliantly, in the hands of

:24:27.:24:35.

Fernando Alonso. RADIO: 51.74. Very good lap. You need a negative

:24:35.:24:45.
:24:45.:24:47.

number on your wheel. 51 hundredths of a second. Between Fernando

:24:47.:24:53.

Alonso and Mark Webber. Alonso takes pole position. Mark Webber

:24:53.:24:58.

will be on the front row once again. Schumacher's third. Felipe Massa,

:24:58.:25:08.
:25:08.:25:13.

He will have a lot of work to do but it is the championship leader

:25:13.:25:19.

that has taken pole position for Ferrari at Silverstone. Thank you.

:25:19.:25:24.

I am in the commentary box. Murray Walker, lovely to hear from you.

:25:24.:25:27.

Fernando Alonso, and we are with the man who was knocked out at the

:25:27.:25:28.

the man who was knocked out at the end of the second part of

:25:28.:25:33.

qualifying, Paul di Resta. Real frustration. I know you would love

:25:33.:25:37.

to have had the chance to fight for it that position in front of home

:25:37.:25:41.

fans. It was a difficult one but that is not a decision I can look

:25:41.:25:45.

into. I think the stewards will look at whether it was on the

:25:45.:25:50.

yellow. We gambled too much on a dry set-up. Certainly, the weather

:25:50.:25:53.

changed for us and we were expecting it to be better than it

:25:53.:25:56.

was. Tomorrow is still hopeful. I think we're starting in a

:25:56.:26:03.

reasonable position. It would have been nice to have had it be a bit

:26:03.:26:08.

better. You replied immediately on the phone, you said "What is

:26:08.:26:12.

happening about the yellow flags?" Were you convinced that Alonso had

:26:12.:26:17.

made a mistake. We spoke about it yesterday and it was unclear how

:26:17.:26:20.

much is a lift and what is necessary. I do not have access to

:26:20.:26:25.

that. That is for the stewards. It has not cost us too much but what

:26:26.:26:30.

it cost us was a chance to get into Q3 and dial the car in a bit better.

:26:30.:26:35.

Hopefully tomorrow, we can do better. I love the fact that Eddie

:26:35.:26:39.

thinks you have a phone in the car! Isn't that lovely? As soon as the

:26:39.:26:42.

session is over, the heavens have opened. Mark Webber, climbing out

:26:42.:26:46.

of his car there, he had a great fun qualifying session. Sergio

:26:47.:26:51.

Perez, despite being the fastest man on the track, sadly qualified

:26:51.:26:55.

in 17th. The fastest driver before the rain

:26:55.:27:01.

but not after the rain. What happen to? We went with inters. I could

:27:01.:27:08.

not get it together. It is a big shame that I could not get a lap

:27:08.:27:15.

together. The risks that we to, it was definitely the wrong call. --

:27:15.:27:22.

we took. As a team, we made the wrong call. Frustration, real

:27:22.:27:25.

frustration for Sergio Torres. It shows you how easy it is to get

:27:25.:27:29.

things wrong. Despite Eddie telling Ferrari off for not getting it

:27:29.:27:33.

right in changeable positions, they got it right today. And there is

:27:33.:27:37.

the man who got it right, Fernando Alonso. Let us hear from the team

:27:37.:27:42.

principal. Stefano, absolutely fantastic.

:27:42.:27:46.

can see how things can change in a few minutes. People were saying

:27:46.:27:52.

that it was a disaster, and that is why we need to stay cool and calm.

:27:52.:27:55.

Driving in those conditions, exploring the car to the maximum.

:27:55.:28:00.

Absolutely. It was an incredible lap. We're happy because it was an

:28:00.:28:04.

easy qualifying, but tomorrow is the most important thing. He called

:28:04.:28:08.

it right for the team, Stefano. Interesting to see Fernando looking

:28:08.:28:13.

at the Lotus to work out why the car is so fast. That is his nature.

:28:13.:28:18.

He is the ultimate professional. The most people think, and even

:28:18.:28:23.

Murray endorses that further, that he is the top man. The way he is

:28:23.:28:26.

going about this season, in a car that is not the best, he is doing

:28:26.:28:30.

the best job in the car. You have to work on your umbrella technique.

:28:30.:28:35.

Look at my right arm. I am perfectly dry. Don't worry. There

:28:35.:28:38.

is method in my madness. Thankfully, it is dry at Wimbledon at the

:28:38.:28:42.

moment. You can see all the action as that ladies final on falls on

:28:42.:28:52.
:28:52.:28:54.

BBC One and BBC 1HT. -- Ladies' Final unfolds. -- BBC One HD. We

:28:54.:28:58.

return tomorrow with the British Grand Prix. All of the build up is

:28:58.:29:03.

live on BBC One and then we head over to BBC Two for the race.

:29:03.:29:05.

Everything is in high-definition. We have been talking about a

:29:05.:29:09.

certain Murray this weekend but it was lovely to have our own Murray

:29:09.:29:14.

in the commentary box. It was a voice that most of us grew up with

:29:14.:29:17.

and I had the privilege of racing under him. His excellence in front

:29:17.:29:22.

of the camera and on air is at echt -- remarkable. Mother Nature can do

:29:22.:29:26.

what she likes but you will never rain on the parade of the British

:29:26.:29:30.

Formula One fans. Thanks to the real heroes today, the thousands in

:29:30.:29:34.

the grandstands. They were fantastic but the man who rode the

:29:34.:29:39.

storm better than everyone else, Fernando Alonso. Ferrari were

:29:39.:29:49.
:29:49.:30:03.
