Here we are then, race 12 of the season from the Monza circuit. It's

the final European Grand Prix of the year and what things we have

Incredible images, remarkable moment, but what will be the

defining image of the 2012 Italian Alongside me two men who have made

their own bit of history here, David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan.

The drivers talk about it meaning more to them when they win around a

in the lower orders, there is so much history. You have seen the

great drivers win here and the fans are special. Eddie I must apologise

Parabolica. What I think DC is right, when you're standing there,

because the podium is here, it is slung out on a screen over the

track and you have everyone here crowding around. It is closer to

the action. There is nothing like Italian passion when they want to

make a noise. The race is special heerbgs post-race it is special.

The fans come down here. I wonder who will be on the podium today.

First here is thousand battle was looking for battle and -- the

battle for the drivers and Red Bull are looking for a hat

trick of wins. They lead the way and look down where Mercedes and

Ferrari are. That is the fight to pick up the Championship. Yesterday

was the fight for pole position. It was dramatic, it was very close.

was about contrasts, Paul di Resta delivered his best ever qualifying

performance, by going fourth, although there was a five place

penalty for a gear box change. Fernando Alonso set the pace in Q1

and Q2 and helped Felipe Massa to his best qualifying performance.

But a problem on the final run meant he was slowest of the top ten.

Red Bull had a low-key day, with Mark Webber failing to make the top

ten cut and Sebastian Vettel settling for fifth. But with a good

chance of closing the gap to Fernando Alonso in the Championship.

The smoothest pairing was at McLaren, Lewis Hamilton set the

pace in the early stages for his fourth pole of the season. Jenson

Button almost matched it at the end. Neither of them has Monday at Monza.

But that could be about to change. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button

hold the front row ahead of Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher.

Sebastian Vettel starts fifth ahead of the second Mercedes of Nico

Rosberg. The penalised Force India of Paul di Resta is ninth. Romain

Grosjean's replacement, Jerome D'Ambrosio, is 15th. Pastor

Maldonado starts 22 after his penalty for incidents at Spa. Well

done to Lewis Hamilton, his fourth pole of the season. But he was made

to work for that. And Fernando Alonso, if he hadn't had the

problem going into that last part, Lewis must have been thinking that

was the man he had to beat. It was a great lap in the end and with

many ways with all the speculation, the best way to silence that talk.

We can see the fans packed along the fence. There is a real love for

motor sport here. Despite Felipe Massa qualifying in third, we have

an idea of the frustration of Ferrari. Luca de Montezemolo is

clear, the passion that comes out of Ferrari thing, the sea of red

that is here in Monza. They are passionate. He was so upset,

because Fernando Alonso could have made ta pole position his and there

would have been two Ferraris on the top two rows and these people would

have gone out of their heads. Don't be fooled, because Fernando Alonso

will make a big fight. The cars are on their way to join us here. David

and Eddie will have a chat to some drivers and to get close to the

second front row start within a week. You must be happy. Views for

the race? It is great for the team. It is a long old slog down to turn

one. And then it is a 90 degree right hander, so it is always

tricky. It is high speed when you hit the brakes. Yeah, I feel good.

The good thing is we are going to do our own thing and I think

planning it at this stage is difficult in term of what you do,

because you're both on the front row. We're just going to do our own

thing and see what happens. message is your both free to race

no, team orders. Exactly. Good luck. The man he has to beat is Lewis

Hamilton. His sitting eight metres in front of him. A wonderful race

last week this Spa and a fantastic qualifying, can you win this race?

We're going to try. The idea is always to start the Rhys thinking

Monza, does that put extra pressure on you It is always a big pressure.

Spa was not an easy qualifying, will bit similar here? It looked

like it obviously. We knew that it might be a difrt one after we

started the weekend on Friday and saw the pace was not there. We did

a good job and qualified as high as we could. In the races, I think

anything is possible. So looking forward to this afternoon and the

car should be better. Good luck with that. Paul di Resta, what a

fantastic qualifying, tell me about the position, you have lost five

positions, what can you do? As long as we're going forward that is all

that matters. We have a fast car. If there is any drag you can take

over. Time for Ben Edwards to commentate on the 2012 Italian

Grand Prix from here in Monza. The last British man to win here was a

certain David Coulthard and the way the front of this grid shapes up,

that could be a record that is set to be broken. It is time for the

Monza Grand Prix and it is usually start of the formation lap. Options

Alonso,. Perez primed. Senna option. The most successful driver at Monza

has been a certain sir Stirling Moss who won here in 1959. Today

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will try to win this event for the

first time in their careers. They lead the cars around. Everyone that

qualified on the medium the softer compound tyre, has to start on that

tyre. But choice from 11th down wards and Sergio Perez is starting

on the harder tyre, as has Jerome D'Ambrosio and Pastor Maldonado and

Nico Hulkenberg from the very back of the grid. The leaves beginning

to fall in Monza. Gary Anderson what can we expect. I think it will

be a one stop race, but there is a worry about tyre wear. That is the

white strip on the right hand front tyre. We need a good job on engine

cooling. Gear box is good. Engine is hot. That is the engineering

telling Sebastian Vettel to cool the engine down. You keep the revs

low and the speed up. Wear on the right front tyre. I think it will

get better during race. There is more rubber down than on Friday. A

one stop is the fastest by ten seconds, but a two stop is not out

of question. That is what to watch out. Red Bull have the advantage,

but they didn't qualify as well as McLaren. McLaren, the gap the

McLaren is 54 points. If you gate one/two you can score 43 points. So

even if they got a one/two, Red Bull would still be leading. But

Lewis Hamilton heading around the Parabolica, that is the final turn.

Sebastian Vettel is here just getting ready to line up on the

grid. DAVID COULTHARD: We are hearing Sebastian Vettel has been

asked to do a good job on engine cooling. They will set for near on

a minute waiting for the others. And that can take away horsepower.

It puts the engine closer to its theoretical limit as well. Ross

Prawn -- Ross Brawn keeping an eye on the Mercedes. Don't count

Mercedes out of this. We're wonding -- wondering whether they might go

for a two-stop. They did struggle doing a one-stop last week. You see

the two Mercedess lining up behind each other. Kimi Raikkonen starts

in seventh. He has never won the Italian Grand Prix. But we have

seen great race pace throughout the season and Felipe Massa's best

qualifying of the year. He starts in third. Another driver who has

not won here. You have to go back to fourth to find one whether has

won herement and that is Michael Schumacher. Nico Hulkenberg is

right at the back. Keep an eye on the Force India as he tries to make

Italian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton gets off the line quickly. They

could start from Felipe Massa in the Ferrari, and he is attacking.

He is attacking Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button is in third place,

Michael Schumacher in fourth place, Sebastian Vettel in fifth-place. He

had quite a battle. Paul di Resta trying to make up ground. Fernando

Alonso can gain, as Jenson Button comes back. Felipe Massa turns in

ahead, and Fernando Alonso cannot get past Kamui Kobayashi. A clean

start. A bit of bodywork in the middle of the first chicane. It

remains to be seen who that was. Otherwise, steady stuff. Lewis

Hamilton, this is what he would want to see, he has opened a gap

already. Nico Rosberg has dropped down to tenth place. He started in

sixth place. Lewis Hamilton leads. Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull in

fifth place. Watch out for the other Force India, I do not see

Nico Hulkenberg. He is up to 18th place. Fernando Alonso has got past

Kamui Kobayashi. He has lined up perfectly into the slipstream of

Kimi Raikkonen. The straight line speed has been pretty impressive.

Fernando Alonso is down the insider. Again, Fernando Alonso on the

charge. 212 mph. A bit less with a heavy fuel load. The braking

distances have changed massively since we last saw the cars. Under

normal conditions, it is the longest braking zone of the year.

140 metres. That will increase by 10 to 20 metres, depending on your

confidence level. That has to be taken into account. Mark Webber has

not had a great start, he is in 14th place. A reasonably good start

from Sebastian Vettel. He had a storming try it in Belgium a week

ago, he finished in second. He pulled off some brilliant

overtaking manoeuvres. Next time around, the DRS will be available.

Timo Glock has got some damage on his front wing. Everybody is

running, nobody has gone out. will be in the first chicane, we

saw a bit of a front wing of flying in the air. It should not affect

the front runners. The Marshalls should have removed any debris.

Fernando Alonso chasing Sebastian Vettel. Michael Schumacher is

weaving slightly. The straight line speed of the Red Bull is stronger.

Last year, Lewis Hamilton struggled to get a slipstream in a straight

line, because he was buzzing into the limiter. This is the compromise

the teams have. Lewis Hamilton hooked it up fantastically. Jenson

Button got a bit too much wheelspin. Felipe Massa was the first to

release his KERS and he got a very solid start. It was brave from

Felipe Massa. No harm in having a go, but Lewis Hamilton was wise to

wait. Nico Rosberg had already lost a bit of time, and he got boxed to

the outside. Mark Webber had a contact with the back of Sergio

Perez. He is in the slipstream of Lewis Hamilton, a 600 metre dash to

the first corner. This was brave. Lewis Hamilton runs him wide.

have had their incidents here in the past. Lewis Hamilton clattered

into the back of Fernando -- Felipe Massa or a couple of years ago.

he reacted, he got a wheelspin, and he lost vital metres. It was not a

bad start, but you do not want to lose a position. Lewis Hamilton

leads the race, he is opening up a gap. Sebastian Vettel gets past

Michael Schumacher. Fernando Alonso is there as well. Fernando Alonso

will try to get past Michael Schumacher. It did not book like

Michael Schumacher did a great deal of defending. RADIO: We need to get

past these cars again, they are stopping once. Mercedes will make

two stops. It is what we thought they would be. Fernando Alonso is

behind Michael Schumacher. Michael Schumacher does not have a great

amount of grip. Fernando Alonso has got DRS. Michael Schumacher has the

DRS open as well. Look at the Ferrari, running into the rev

limiter, losing speed, its relative to the Mercedes, so he has to make

the pass through one of the tighter sections. Lewis Hamilton leads.

Nico Rosberg having to defend. They have lost a place to Bruno Senna,

and he has got Daniel Ricciardo behind him. Nico Rosberg is having

a tough time. A bit further back, Jerome d'Ambrosio. That was Bruno

Senna, they clashed in the first chicane. Fernando Alonso has got

past Michael Schumacher, he has made the move this time. Ferrari

have not had to wait too long, they have got a car in second and in

fifth place. Fernando Alonso did not have the speed at the end of

the straight, so he has gone for an early pass. He got in the

slipstream alia, he used his KERS, presumably. Fernando Alonso locking

the wheel as he goes defensive. Michael Schumacher having a strong

race. He can be a bit more aggressive with the tyres. If

Fernando Alonso was trying to just stop once... This is the replay, he

comes early. Even before the DRS is activated. Then he opens it, which

releases track from the car. Michael moves back into his

slipstream. Fernando Alonso had the inside line up. To take the outside

it to the first chicane, extremely difficult. They must all be members

of the same family, the same hair colour! They are nothing back.

Lewis Hamilton has control. Seven laps completed. Fernando Alonso is

not that close to Sebastian Vettel. Sergio Perez is ahead of Kamui

Kobayashi. Kamui Kobayashi is trying to get past him. Paul di

Resta is battling with Bruno Senna. I do not know if Bruno Senna gave

the position back. He is trying to get back into the top 10.

cannot go past somebody off the racetrack. Bruno Senna on the

grass! He goes down the escape road. That has proved a bit costly. He

gets passed by a Mark Webber. It was good attacking driving, but he

got a wheel on the grass, and he could not do anything about it. He

did not look as though there was any unusual weaving from Paul di

Resta. Bruno Senna would say, my car was there, but it was difficult

to judge. Paul di Resta stays defensive. You cannot close down

the braking zone. That was very tight. I would imagine she would

would have a look at that. I have been clarified and, after Bahrain,

but it is so hard when you are doing these speeds, over 200 miles

per hour. You are not looking in your mirror the whole time you go

into the corner. You have to say, I have made my decision, I am focused

on the apex. You do not have sensors that start beeping when

another car is close. A big slide from Sergio Perez. He is in eighth

place. A Toro Rosso has lost control! Jean-Eric Vergne is off

onto the grass. It looks like the rear suspension is damaged. Did

that go in the braking zone? I would be amazed if he can drive

away from there. The Marshalls will be to take a view. My goodness,

that's not on him. The left rear suspension. It took like he was

already damaged by the time he hit the brakes. It is hard to know if

it was the code that did the damage. If you look at the left rear, it is

pointing at the wrong angle. The underside of the chassis took quite

a hip. RADIO: Are you OK? I am fine, just my back. He came down hard.

The coccyx sits right on the base. No overtaking allowed here. He is

known by his initials in the team. RADIO: Box, boost to zero. They are

on a two stop. The poor start is making life difficult. Three times,

the message. In he comes. This should be short work. He has gone

out on the harder tyre. He qualified on the softer of the

compounds. A pretty good stop, but we might see some faster than that.

Michael Schumacher, a rally cross stile. We would expect Michael

Schumacher to be coming in on this lap. His times are starting to drop

away, 1:31.2 on the last lap, compared to 1:30.1 for the leader.

It would appear that he has hit the many cliffs. This is affecting Kimi

Raikkonen's race. Kimi Raikkonen is losing time as a result. Sergio

Perez is closing up. The Sauber cars are both in the points

correctly. Better than what happened to Sauber last of the time

out. Gary Anderson, the Mercedes crew are getting ready, so Michael

Schumacher will come in. It is the hard tyre that will go on. It is

falling away quicker than expected. Two stops for both Mercedes. They

will have to make another stop. Jenson Button is in the window..

Let's see what McLaren do. Will they try to just make one single

stop? Michael Schumacher rejoins. He is coming out ahead of Nico

Hulkenberg. In fact, Nico Hulkenberg has gone through, so it

is Heikki Kovalainen. A lot of work at Ferrari. That was the technical

chief having a conversation. Have they got an issue with one of the

cars? Or are they talking about strategy? It is unusual to see him

off the pit wall. Normally, they would talk on the radio circuit. He

has felt the need to go to the garage. Gary Anderson, perhaps you

could get a line for us. Do you think that does indicate your

problem? I would have thought that was strategy. They are doing quick

laps, for under one arm so putting his fastest lap of the race. --

Fernando Alonso. He is matching Lewis Hamilton. They have got to

beat Lewis Hamilton, but it is best to defeat Sebastian Vettel, because

he is closest in the championship. Sergio Perez has overtaken Kimi

Raikkonen. This is on the run down to the second chicane. He has gone

round the outside. A brilliant pass. Very fair driving from Kimi

Raikkonen. He could have tried to Li Na him, but Sergio Perez got

enough of his cot alongside him. Kimi Raikkonen has come in. Losing

a lot of speed. He was passed by in front. That didn't work for the

Lotus team, that extra lap, lawsing time and being overtaken has

dropped Kimi Raikkonen further behind Michael. He has got to work

to get back up. Ahead of Michael is Raikkonen's new team mate for the

weekend, Jerome D'Ambrosio, in the other Lotus. We're hearing he

doesn't have KERS, so he may struggle. Michael is on the fresher

tyres. If you flay pure team strategy, they would leave Jerome

D'Ambrosio until he has passed Michael. You can see Michael

already in the DRS zone. He will have a look up here and we have

news as to why there was the consternation at Ferrari, Massa has

a problem. Button having a go at Felipe Massa for second place. The

team are saying you got to tell us what is going on with the car. He

can't talk much now, because he has his mirrors full of Jenson Button.

Look at this. He is having a go. Is he going to do it? He is into the

chicane and he has it complete. I don't know whether Felipe Massa has

other problems with the car. But Jenson Button is into second.

Felipe Massa down to third. Sebastian Vettel and Fernando

Alonso beliends them. A great pass from Jenson Button, put Felipe off

line as he went into the second chicane and Ferrari are getting

kpweered up for a -- geared up for a pit stob stop. Presumably this is

for Felipe Massa. Not a DRS zone, but he would have been able to

release KERS. In the slip stream of the Ferrari. Ferrari stays to the

left for defence, into the corner and the McLaren uses that slip

stream to pull out. Michael Schumacher has got past Jerome

D'Ambrosio. We will keep an eye on the pace of Michael Schumacher and

Kimi Raikkonen. That looks like an interesting battle. Ferrari still

waiting for their man to come around. I think he will be coming

in now. Felipe Massa has come into the pit lane. Loss of performance.

I wonder if they have any other issues. Away goes Massa. Gary,

losing the power. What happens is they get used to using it and

they're not used to flying blind. It shouldn't make any difference to

the performance of the car. You can't can only send data from the

car to the pits. Massa has just got to drive the car. They can't

monitor tyre temperatures or pressure. We need to make the most

of is. Push now. Jenson Button being encouraged to push as we see

Kobayashi. It is an important tussle here, in terms of

constructor s' Championship. Paul di Resta trying to work through the

field after that five-place gear box penalty. Sebastian Vettel comes

in and Fernando Alonso in at the same time. This is early if you're

going to go for the one stop. I wonder if they feel they can do it.

Jenson Button comes into the pits side by side and Sebastian Vettel

is still just ahead of the Ferrari as they come down the pit lane. But

we're going to have a race on our hands as they join in behinds the

likes of Senna and... He will come out behind mas Alex Salmond he is

stuck behind the -- behind Massa, he is stuck behind the the gear box.

Nico Rosberg going fast at the moment. This is good, looks like a

few two-stoppers out there. wonder if they think those guys who

have just stopped, are they two- stopping? They're on the verge of

trying to go through on one stop. But Gary, do you think they can go

this far in the race? Just before we ask your opinion, we will have a

look at this replay as Ferrari try to release him. There was plenty of

space there. No question of unsafe release. Fernando Alonso cities on

the inner part of the pit lane. Mark Webber is in the pits. Felipe

Massa not quite there. Now Felipe Massa has got a chance to go past.

And now Sebastian Vettel will try and do like-wise. But there is not

the room he needs. I expect Sebastian Vettel to pass Daniel

Ricciardo as Daniel Ricciardo comes back at the Ferrari and was able to

keep the battle going and Vettel hit the back of the Toro Rosso. If

there is any question as to whether the two teams owned by... Alonso

goes through as well. Has Sebastian Vettel sustained any damage there?

Sorrow Rosso tried to retake position and got off line and as

Sebastian Vettel tried to do the cut back, leaving the second

chicane, it looked like he nudged the back of the car. McLaren around

the pit lane. Will bit for Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button. Is this

e-- this is more what we expected. Jenson Button comes in first.

a problem on the front rights. slow stop for Jenson Button. He

gets away. Whether that will put him under pressure, we will have to

wait and see as he comes back out. I think all that axivity behind has

held up Massa. So although it was a slow stop, it allowed Jenson Button

to come out in front. You're right, that affected Massa's chances of

beating Jenson Button. Lewis Hamilton completes his stop. This

shueb routine. Button yet to enter Parabolica, so Lewis Hamilton, well

maybe it is early to say he is dominating. But he is well on his

way to do so. The Toro Rosso looking for pass on the wams. --

Williams. Ricardo racing hard. The young Australian with the Italian

heritage, enjoying the Monza Grier. Let's swhree went wrong on Jenson

Button's pit stop. Front right, he has had an issue getting the, was

it with the gun? Did he have to rerelease the nut a 5 bring it

back? This is where Vettel looked like he touched the back of the

Toro Rosso and that angle, it looked like he was clear. Well,

whether he had to hit the brakes a lot. Here is Fernando Alonso, he

has a slip stream and Sebastian Vettel protects to the inside 5

Fernando Alonso tried to go around the outside of Vettel, he can't do

it there. These two had a great battle for the lead last year. Was

there a bit of bad blood after that. Fernando Alonso wasn't happy about

the move. He almosts touches on the grass. Fernando Alonso is on the

grass and he will be even more angry after that, because that

could have ended with a huge accident. But he gathered it

together. Take your mind back a year and it was the other way

around, Fernando Alonso easing Sebastian Vettel on to the grass.

I'm not sure whether that was easing or stronger. Felipe Massa

comes through the shot and Sebastian Vettel had already taken

the wider line and Fernando Alonso trying to hold on and go with it.

At the point he had to enter the grass, he got right alongside him.

That is as close as you ever want to be at 200mph. Why was Vettel so

slow, was it the slip stream effect? He was slightly out of

position when he went into the chicane. OK that's enough. We saw

that. It's clear what happened. think Charlie Whiting might be

receiving a deputation from Ferrari at this moment! They have a direct

line from the pit wall to Charlie. It would be normal for the team

manager to pass a message. Are you watching? Remember last year? We

had Ross Brawn on the radio to remind pliebg toll only do one

change of -- Michael to only do one change in the braking zone.

front and I want the emphasise this, this race is being led by Sergio

Perez who has not stopped so far. We think he is trying to go deeper

and he is still a major contender. That is Jerome D'Ambrosio sorry

going into the gravel, but getting back on. Of course it is his first

Grand Prix of the season. Here we are with the leader, Sergio Perez,

yet to stop in this race. Lewis Hamilton is 1.8 seconds behind on

the harder compound tyre. So he is going deep into the race before

making his pit stop. You have got to run the other type of tyre at

some point. Sergio Perez doing a good job hanging on. His lap times

are not particularly good. It is good, keep the pace, stay out.

They're keeping him out for longer. A normal pit stop costs 20 seconds

of track time. Michael Schumacher is exactly 20 seconds behind him.

Michael Schumacher's time is a 29.7 versus 29.9 for Raikkonen. He will

come out behind that battle. If everything runs normally, Sergio

Perez is looking like he will slot in to ninth place after the stop.

That is the position that Nico Rosberg occupies now. It doesn't

look like he will do enough to stay in front of that battle. That is

presuming these two don't cost each other time by coming together.

is right. Michael Schumacher defending hard as we saw last year,

his defence on Lewis Hamilton caused some interest. Target

extended. Four laps or more. That is interesting, they're going to

take Perez further. Gary, are you surprised they will get him to go

that far? GARY ANDERSON: No he is running his own race. He is in free

air. Lewis Hamilton is closing him down, but not by much. He is

driving a perfect race and if he takes the tyres further, then he

has less worry and risk on the next set. You're on board with Lewis

Hamilton, he is using the DRS to close up on the Sauber, he may take

the lead. He is down the inside. And Lewis Hamilton does so fairly

easily getting past Sergio Perez. He has not led every lap. But we're

still waiting for that saub tore come N And the man chasing Lewis

Hamilton has been beaten by Nico Rosberg. So button and Lewis

Hamilton trading lap times, but Lewis Hamilton has more than seven

seconds of a lead over Jenson Button. You see the battle behind

him, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso's past. He has got past

Sebastian Vettel. That was a similar area where he ended up on

the grass. This time it seemed to work. The Ferrari is now up into

fifth. The Ferraris are running fourth and fifth. Once Perez pit

there is a will give pera shot at the podium and from a -- Ferrari a

shot at the podium. It is early days, but I think we can presume

that later on if they are run foorg podium, Massa will give that

position to Alonso. The Tifosi are loving this. Massa's last podium in

2010, race heard n it is Sergio Perez who brings the Sauber. Well

he was leader. He had been passed by Lewis Hamilton. But a good stint.

He has gone deep into the race, 29 laps completed on the harder tyre

and they will be studying the wear, particularly on the inside right

tyre. Presumably it has not been as much of a factor as they worried

about. Here is the battle with Michael Schumacher and Kimi

Raikkonen. Will Perez snai front of Rosberg? Although that is an

impressive stint on the tyres, the lap time were not quick enough. He

had a small opportunity to stay in front of Michael Schumacher and

Raikkonen, but for some reason they give that opportunity up. Lewis

Hamilton leads as they cross the line. 31 lapse completed. The tkwap

to -- the gap to Jenson Button is just about the same. Now here is

the move that Fernando Alonso made on Sebastian Vettel. OK we see that.

I see what you're doing. It is destroying our race. I see what you

mean. That is a replay of the first incident. Not that time he did go

past. Lets's just see the rest of successfully. He went to the inside.

He decided, having had the scary ride around the outside...

Drive through for Sebastian Vettel, which has a big impact, because he

is second to Fernando Alonso in the points, coming into this race. He

will be driving through the pits. It costs you 20 seconds here. 17

seconds, in fact, because he does not stop. It will put him back to

fuel Pickup problem. We had that on the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg

yesterday, probably not related, but really surprising. It is so

unusual. That is the drive through for Sebastian Vettel. Let's see

where he comes back out. Mark Webber, he will slot in behind him.

Crucially, just in front of Paul di Resta. That was well caught. That

did not cost him as much as we were projecting. 17 seconds. Here comes

Sergio Perez, looking down the outside of Kimi Raikkonen. A lovely

outside of Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi Raikkonen has been passed three

times they are now at that corner. You would not normally overtake

somebody there. I am surprised he has not made a second stop. Michael

Schumacher has just been in it. Gary Anderson, perhaps you could

give us a line on that, because it has looked like Lotus and Mercedes

have been slow to react to the drivers losing time. Kimi Raikkonen

makes it obvious he is on the left- hand side. Nico Rosberg, a bit

surprised. Fairly straightforward. It is good to see. Kimi Raikkonen

is such a fair race there, but he leaves enough space. This is

important that Fernando Alonso loses as little time as possible,

because the threat from Sauber is real. Sergio Perez, remember what

he did in Canada, he caught the leaders. Fernando Alonso dropped

back to fifth place as a result. Will he make the move? Yes, the

world championship leader passes his team-mate, Felipe Massa, but

Felipe Massa could still get his first podium in two years.

Sergio Perez is 1.3 seconds quicker. Gary Anderson, give us an update on

what you think of Sergio Perez's progress. He is driving very well,

it is making sure he looks after the tyres. He is not abusing the

tyres too much. That is what Fernando Alonso had to do, get past

Felipe Massa. Lewis Hamilton has a comfortable advantage. Second and

third for Ferrari, but the story is that Sergio Perez is hunting

Ferrari down. He has done it before, people try to do it again. He

hounded Fernando Alonso in Malaysia, in Canada he past Fernando Alonso,

and here, he is closing the Brazilian, Felipe Massa. His tenure

of that seat might not last much longer. It could be Sergio Perez to

take it for him. RADIO: Sebastian Vettel has a problem. We will

continue as we are for now. Sebastian Vettel had a problem with

the alternator through free practice. That was also what

stopped him waltzed leading in Valencia. An almost inevitable pass

for Sergio Perez. Why not do it here? He will be in a DRS zone. The

initial acceleration of the Ferrari allows Felipe Massa to maintain

position here. This is almost like a replay of what we saw, Sergio

Perez on Kimi Raikkonen. He could pass Felipe Massa here. It is such

a late moment! That was so late, how he pulled out of the

slipstream! That was brave talk Sergio Perez. I thought he was

remanded to the back of him! Me to! It did not happen! Sergio Perez is

into third place. Remember what happened to Sauber last week, they

were on the front and second rows, but both cars were out at the first

corner. What a boost this could be. Their first-ever podium was here,

thanks to Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the early 90s. Can they do better

than third place? What about Lewis Hamilton? He did pick out in time,

thankfully. That is as close as you ever want to be! 200 mph. My

goodness! How he did not come into contact with the back of that car...

The other Sauber, Kamui Kobayashi. Michael Schumacher goes past him.

That is for ninth place. contrasting performance of the

Sauber cars. Let's see the gap between Fernando Alonso and Sergio

Perez, 1.2 seconds. Sergio Perez is flying, another fastest lap, as he

heads towards the first chicane. He is almost within DRS range of

Fernando Alonso. Fernando Alonso has got some traffic to cope with.

He has been well over one second ahead, Sergio Perez, except on the

lap when he passed Felipe Massa. RADIO: Anything could happen.

are just doing the maths, if Sergio Perez can keep this up, Lewis

Hamilton could be vulnerable. He is 12 seconds up the road from

Fernando Alonso. He was slung on that last lap and Fernando Alonso,

by 0.6 seconds. McLaren will be looking at the speed between Sergio

Perez and Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton will have done 29 laps on

this set of tyres, which is more than this amazing drive from Sergio

Perez. He closes the gap to Fernando Alonso. This Grand Prix

has seen plenty of action. Lewis Hamilton has dominated from the

start. Felipe Massa had a very good getaway. Jenson Button could move

into second later, only for the car to break down on him. Fernando

Alonso has moved up from 10th on the grid to be running in second

place. The gap between him and Sergio Perez, 0.6 seconds. Sergio

Perez started in 12 place, he started on the harder tyre, he is

now on the soft of the compounds, and the tyres are in great shape,

and that is why he is able to get so close to Fernando Alonso.

Fernando Alonso is under threat. He almost got past him in Malaysia,

1:28.6. A bit slower than Sergio Perez, but he has a 10.5 second

advantage, so it should not be a problem. Michael Schumacher has got

past Paul di Resta. He is in a place. He adjusted his brake

balance. Sebastian Vettel! He is out! We have lost two world

champions from this race, and two potential contenders! Sebastian

Vettel was second in the points. Look at the reaction from Christian

Horner, he cannot believe it. The second time this year we have seen

this. He had an alternator problem in Valencia, and they have had one

this weekend. High temperatures today, like in Valencia, could it

be that again? Possibly. They will be a full analysis of what has gone

wrong. They were aware of it for some time, so it could be the

alternator. It could be a question of, cannot hang in there? Can it go

the distance? That is one part each for McLaren and Red Bull. RADIO:

Stop the car, we need to save the engine! Alternator failure,

confirmation. Stop the car. Rather than running it to the point where

the battery fails, and then you run the risk of not sending divide

passages to the engine, they aborted it, they stopped the car.

They felt five laps was too much. This throws the championship wide

open. Mark Webber under pressure from Michael Schumacher. Having a

strong weekend in the Mercedes. is coming back at him. Michael

Schumacher is currently in seventh place. Michael Schumacher has got a

great run, we have seen so much overtaking there. He gets past Mark

into sixth position, Mark Webber back down to seventh place. The

question now is, Michael Schumacher trying to close on Kimi Raikkonen,

Mercedes went for two stops, Kimi Raikkonen has stayed out, but he

has done a lot of laps on his tyres, so I would think that he could be

under threat, although he has been putting in some good times. The

Lotus has looked after the second stream on Paul di Resta. Into the

DRS activation zone. You don't need a timing beacon to know he is

within the one second window. This is Force India Mercedes against

Mercedes Mercedes. Not much difference in terms of engine

performance. But rest rest having a look in his mirrors. Nico Rosberg

looks one way and the other and stays there. Doesn't get the move

made at all. But two drivers whose futures are under consideration.

Paul di Resta has been showing well this year. He goes for the pass. He

was successful last time around. This time he makes its work as well.

It is interesting how paddock rumour has various drivers going to

different positions. Nice consistent lap. Keep this position.

Calming words for Felipe Massa there. Sebastian Vettel walks back.

Look in the predictor of the Championship predictions, he has

lost second place. He has lost third as well F they stay as they

are, Lewis Hamilton will be second in the points. What a turn around

for Lewis Hamilton. We have a car off. That is Mark Webber. He has

had a moment coming out of Ascari chicane. He has been passed by

Kobayashi. Mark Webber has dropped at least two or three places.

He started from the back. Mark Webber driving slowly. Let's have a

lack. Webber's cruising. It looks like it is over for the two Red

Bulls. He is short-shifting his way home. Whether that is because of

the flat-spots or another issue. indication of any particular wear

on the right front. When did we last see a double retirement from

Red Bull? A long time ago. It is something you don't expect from the

world champions. They will still be leading the Championship and

McLaren haven't been able to capitalise as much as they could

have, because they have lost Jenson Button. That is crucial. The fact

that McLaren have lost a car today. Mark Webber, no one to worry about

as he goes through Parabolica in cruising back into retire his car.

Massive flat spots. You can almost see it on the front left. You can

see the white and Mark Webber deciding that not worth the risk.

He may come back out perhaps? it is not going to get him any

points now. Let's see what is happening up front. Lewis Hamilton

is leading. Lewis Hamilton leads on to the final lap. He has had a six-

second lead. It is down to 5.8. But Lewis Hamilton has controlled this

race beautifully and never been under pressure. It was a superb

start. Button got some wheel spin, Lewis Hamilton although he had a

threat from Massa, he fended that off. There is Mark Webber, he is

being pushed. You can see the not spot on the right. No question of

that being anything other than a safety call from inside the cockpit.

What a drive -- great drive by Sergio Perez. Spotted by our eagle-

eyed Anderson in the pit lane. This Sauber does seem to be a good car.

If they can get it to qualify, they could be pushing this man who is

cruising to victory here in Monza harder. Lewis Hamilton will be

looking forward to the final part of the lap here. He has never won

at Monza in the past. He has had some successful runs. He was second

to Fernando Alonso with McLaren back in 2000 and 7. Lewis Hamilton

is going to put himself right back into the Championship hunt, with

victory at Monza. Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian Grand Prix. It is

his third win of the season and he matches Fernando Alonso for three

wins. But Sergio Perez, again the young Mexican driver has starred

here today. He finishes second for Sauber. Fernando Alonso is going to

come through in third. But there is a good battle for fifth and six.

Michael Schumacher and Raikkonen. There is Michael Schumacher,

doesn't look like he has got the pass on Raikkonen. But he has

closed up the Gatt gap. Felipe Massa is fourth, Michael Schumacher

is in sixth. Nico Rosberg catching them at the end and sets fastest

lap on the final lap. So the risk paid off for Lotus in not making

that second stop. An interesting deSigg. Celebrations at Sauber.

Second place. That is a third podium finish this year for Sergio

Perez and it is at the track that Sauber took their first podium

finish. Lewis Hamilton has taken victory, the first British winner

so since you did it in 1997, David. That was a fantastic lights to flag

victory. He got off the line cleanly and you see Fernando Alonso

after a difficult qualifying, damaged rear suspension, finishing

on the podium. You saw the joy as he punched the air. He knows how

important this is for the Championship. Got to know what a

great drive that was. Fantastic job made. Super job. I was saying thank

you so much guys. Incredible job. Really fantastic job. Great effort.

Lewis Hamilton takes the race victory here at Monza for McLaren.

But sauber takes second with their Ferrari engine beating the Ferraris

of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Kimi Raikkonen just held on to

finish in fifth, followed by the two Mercedess of Michael Schumacher

and Rosberg. Pastor Maldonado was conspicuous by his inviz yibt today.

He stayed out of trouble and we didn't see him. -- invisibility.

Jerome D'Ambrosio was 13th, a solid performance on this one-off outing.

Some high-profile retirements, Sebastian Vettel, Nico Hulkenberg,

Sebastian Vettel and of course Jenson Button as well as Jean-Eric

Vergne. Look at this, look at the celebrations for Sergio Perez.

where he came close to achieving his first victory and Lewis

Hamilton, Sergio Perez and for Fernando Alonso. Lewis Hamilton has

taken 20 wins in Formula One, that makes him equal to Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Can he clais down the -- to Mika Hakkinen. Can he chase down the

victory in 2012? Well done a calm and controlled race. You must be

pleased. Yes this is one of the races I haven't won. So very happy.

And the team did an incredible job. So glad the pit stops are strong

and I got a good job. The car has been fantastic all weekend A strong

performance by the team. Unfortunate for Jenson Button,

because we could have had a one/two. But hopefully we can go to

Singapore and do the same. Some great points for you, with the non-

-storing from both Red Bulls. the Championship is showing it is

so unpredictable. I'm grateful that we were in the fight and we have

got a good car and we can compete. It is not necessary think fastest,

but its as fast. That is the great feeling. Race wins and being able

to fight for Championship, is this why you race at McLaren, is it

enough to keep you there? I'm not focusing on next year. I want to

focus on this year. It is one race at a time. I'm trying to take this

team to the top and win both Championships and you know, this is

an incredible team. I have a great relationship with them. I'm looking

forward to the Fujitsu Motor -- future. Sadly you were forced to

retire. What was the problem? don't entirely know. But it is to

do with fuel. The engine doesn't have any in it. That is the problem.

So it is, not pumping the fuel in correct Liverpool I don't know if -

- fuel in correctly. I don't know if it is a pipe problem. It cut out

and that was the end of it I had to coast to a stop. So, yeah, not the

best way to end the day. But I was having fun out there. It is a race

you always come awhich with a headache, because it is high revs

and full throttle for so long. But I didn't gate good start, I had

wheel spin which cost me time. And then in the my stop, it wasn't as

quick as we would have hoped. So I was never going to challenge Lewis.

But we're in a good position for a second place. That would have been

great for the team. But it wasn't to be. Well done to to whole team.

I think we have proven in the last few races that we are strong in

qualify ago also in race trim. And the consistency is really key and

we haven't seen this from anyone this season. So it's good to see

and also congratulations to Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull didn't get any

car home. But far Nando and Lewis scoring. It is a lot of points lost

for me. But there you tkwofplt -- go. These things happen. It is...

If it is going to stop in a race, it is probably one of bst way tos

stop. -- best ways to stop. It is not a mistake or an accident. Your

never want to finish lierk I did. But it is what it is. JAKE

HUMPHREY: A frustrated Jenson Button. Martin Whitmarsh this is

to celebrate for the last two races, and we will celebrate again tonight.

For Jenson Button, it is tough, because it should have been first

and second. He has been doing all right. He wanted those points, and

we wanted them. It is disappointing. But we think there was a failure in

the fuel tank, they are complicated systems. Been while, they will try

to enjoy the moment. We heard from Ron Dennis, he was emphatic, he

said the management and the investors, the decision is yours,

do you think this helps you make a decision? The fact is, we know what

our decision is. This weekend, despite all of the furore, we have

been focused on trying to win races. We enjoy working with Lewis

Hamilton, he enjoys being in the team, it is a good moment to get

together and had! It is a good reminder of what he can achieve

with you. He is leaving here in second place in the championship,

that is a quick reminder to all of us. The championship is on,

Fernando Alonso has got a great knack of rescuing points out of

whatever the situation is, but the fact is, we are hauling him in a

little bit, and with the remaining races, there is a championship

fight to be had. Contrasting result, what conversation will you have

with Jenson Button? I will hurt him as well. I will congratulate him on

a great weekend, I will apologise for letting him down. He will move

on, he knows we are pushing hard, and it is frustrating. He is one of

the more mature drivers in the paddock. He will say, OK, I will

try to beat Lewis Hamilton in Singapore. He has got to come away

feeling good about the weekend. He has got form, people were

questioning that a few races ago. He has got to go out there and

score as many points as he can. it getting to the point where you

need to have a word with him about playing for the team? Lewis

Hamilton is 34 points off the lead. At the moment, the dynamic is right.

They are racing each other, we enjoy that. It will be some time

before we change our mind. Rocket read it looks lovely on you! I will

get you a shirt if you like! It was a fantastic day for McLaren. Behind

Lewis Hamilton, catching him on the track, a brilliant drive from

Sergio Perez, and a good day for Sauber.

Yes, that second-place finish is the reason for this fuss around him.

You ran into your team, clapping and cheering, how does it feel?

is great to have a great atmosphere with the team. We never expected to

have a podium this weekend. Before the race, they told me I would

finish in eighth place on ninth place, and I would have a grid. We

were missing half a second on the straights. With that, it is

impossible to fight for the victory. But we went for that the strategy,

agreed risk everything, and it worked well. Fantastic overtaking,

especially on the Ferrari cars. The second one that our attention, you

came close to the back of Felipe Massa. It was important to get them

sooner. The most important, I was quicker than them, but with Kimi

Raikkonen, I had to get him soon, otherwise I would lose too much

time and the greater tyres. Starting in 12th place and fighting

so dramatically, was that your best race in Formula One? I do not know.

I think my best oarsmen a share, such difficult conditions. -- My

Best was Malaysia. But it is definitely one of my best races

ever. When you added up the Ferrari cars, were you only get in second

place in the race, or wait you moving into the Ferrari seat for

next season? As I always say, there are still 81 line races to go, so

why have to retain my focus -- eight or nine races. You are tyre

Rigg up for a team photo, so we will let you do that! You can see

the excitement here, a really popular second place for him. The

reason why it is so popular, he got it by overtaking the Ferrari cars.

Felipe Massa, after such a tremendous start, how did you feel

about fourth place? Our degradation was high, so it was not so bad. It

was too high. We were struggling completely on the tyres. That was

the main issue for us. We had no tyres at the end of the race. I

anticipated my stop, so it was difficult. Looking at the result,

it was very positive, for the team, and now we be to concentrate to

bring in points to the team all the time. It was a good race. It is

never great when you see Pat Fry running around in the garage.

was a problem with the telemetry, they could not see us. There was a

blackout. But it was OK. Tell us about the incident with Sebastian

Vettel. It was dangerous, thin edge of the circuit, 350 kilometres per

hour, it was not nice. But the race director made the decision. At the

end, it did not change anything, because he was forced to retire

with problems. Is there enough respect between drivers at the

moment? It seems that every week we are talking about something like

this. I do not know. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It is difficult. It

is on the borderline, this one. I do not know.

It might not have been the victory the Italian team craved, but how

will they be feeling inside right now? Very happy, because with all

of the things going on, everything plays into the hands of Fernando

Alonso and the team. It is becoming more certain they can capture the

championship. It is easy to focus on the mind the shy, but Fernando

Alonso has extended his championship lead. It is a big sigh

of relief. Luca di Montezemolo was disappointed in qualifying, but

what a comeback. Third place, podium result, he extends his

podium -- his championship lead. Felipe Massa, finishing behind his

team-mate, he said he had no telemetry in the car at all, just

as Jenson Button overtook him. How difficult is that? It is very

difficult, of course. He needed to be a team player, which he is. But

think about his position, he finished in fifth place in Belgium,

he qualified in third place here, he finished in fourth place, he is

giving a sterling job. Is it too late? Fernando Alonso said there is

not enough respect between the drivers. Would you agree? Emotions

run high. When you are going around at 200 plus miles per hour, it gets

extremely difficult. The stewards make the decision, and everybody

continues. Well done to Ferrari, they will be happy. Slightly less

happy, a few metres in that direction, Red Bull, a double

retirement. A difficult race today, tell us

what the problem was and when you first knew about it. Roughly 300

metres before I stopped the car, and alternator problem, like

yesterday morning. The incident with Fernando Alonso, was the

drive-through penalty fare? I do not think so, but it is not for me

to judge. Sum up this weekend and the championship as it is. We lost

some points today. We did not finish, it does not help. All in

all, we weren't where we deserved to be. We did the best we could.

Our pace was not as strong as the leaders. It was a good race for us,

given the lack of pace. Talking about that, heading into the rest

of the season, that is a crucial think. There are not so many

straight lines in the next couple of races, at least, showed -- so we

should not lose too much. We can still challenge for the

championship. A difficult day, explain what happened. At the end,

I had no rear tyres left. I was pushing reasonably hard, Nico

Rosberg was fresh, so I had to keep pushing. For the sake of getting a

couple of points, I could not have pushed so hard, but I tried to stay

on it. My rear tyres were finished. I kept it off the wall. The tyres

were flat spot it. I could not see the track. I thought I might as

well retire. We imagine the team principal is

not an awful lot happier. We have been racking our brains to remember

when you last had a double retirement. It was an engine

failure and eight did not finish in South Korea in 2010. Since then, we

have scored in every single Grand Prix. Very disappointing today.

Read emotions for Red Bull, and an example of how reliable you usually

are. What is the biggest asset of Red Bull, it is the reliability.

Today, it was very difficult to understand. It was very

disappointing, especially to retire from a points-scoring finish. It

was a repeat failure, the same one that cost as a victory in Valencia

earlier in the summer. Very disappointing to have the same

thing happen again twice this weekend. Obviously, one of the

talking point is the penalty that Sebastian Vettel took. He said he

was not at all happy about the decision. It was difficult to call.

From what I saw, it looked like a mirror image of what happened last

year at the same corner, where he went round the outside of Fernando

Alonso. Sebastian Vettel took his line, and I thought it was more

than fair, I thought the penalty was harsh. It was irrelevant at the

end, but it seemed a particularly harsh. When we come here, all of

the other teams think it is against us, do you think it was a decision

that went in Ferrari's favour? is difficult to say, you need to

ask them to understand why they chose a penalty like that. It

seemed harsh, it did not seem to fit the crime, if there was a crime

at all. It was irrelevant in the end, because that cost us dearly.
