The attention to detail. The precision. The cost. The constant

:01:04.:01:09.

quest for engineering excellence. Had South Korea seen anything like

:01:09.:01:19.
:01:19.:01:20.

this before Formula One turned up? Oh yes and on a much bigger scale

:01:20.:01:28.

than Formula One. Less than a mile from the Yeongam

:01:28.:01:33.

Track is this place, three million square meters of supertanker heaven.

:01:33.:01:37.

Now for about 70 million you could either run a team in Formula One

:01:37.:01:47.
:01:47.:01:50.

for just one year or get your hands on this.

:01:50.:02:00.
:02:00.:02:03.

150,000 tonnes of container ship. And hilst they don't match up in

:02:03.:02:06.

terms of real speed, they are defined by ground breaking

:02:07.:02:16.
:02:17.:02:29.

engineering and attention to the smallest detail.

:02:29.:02:34.

And when you have spent months building this, or designing a car,

:02:34.:02:44.

one thing can make or break your year - the launch.

:02:44.:02:51.

Lights out and away we go. Sebastian Vettel lights it up. And

:02:51.:02:57.

somebody is up already. Is that Alonso? And Webber.

:02:57.:03:07.
:03:07.:03:09.

Man, Romain Grosjean what are you Two very different places with so

:03:09.:03:13.

much in common and this is worth looking at. This is how close they

:03:13.:03:19.

are. A mile over the hill from that shipyard this impressive place, the

:03:19.:03:24.

Yeongam Circuit as we arrive for our third Korean gran pre. Eddie

:03:24.:03:29.

Jordan is with me. The cars cars will be travelling faster than that

:03:29.:03:35.

in a few moments, but South Korea, what do you make of it? It is

:03:35.:03:40.

growing in terms of the awareness. When we first came here, the people

:03:41.:03:45.

of South Korea hadn't a clue what was going on. This is their sport.

:03:45.:03:49.

Technology and Formula One is at the pinnacle of what they do here

:03:49.:03:54.

in the shipyard is brilliant. I mean it is an amazing place to come

:03:54.:04:03.

That shipyard was remarkable, but we seem seem to have entertainment,

:04:03.:04:08.

in 2010 Mark Webber crashed. Last year Sebastian Vettel won and Red

:04:08.:04:12.

Bull clinched the constructors crown and if we look at the

:04:12.:04:15.

standings, for the first time there is a real battle with Fernando

:04:15.:04:19.

Alonso. That happened since Singapore. He put himself back at

:04:19.:04:23.

the top of the frame alongside Alonso. It is the first time there

:04:23.:04:28.

has been back-to-back winners this season. Vettel, he is on the money

:04:28.:04:34.

at the moment and he is always quick no matter what happens. He

:04:34.:04:39.

won here last year. Red Bull are looking strong and

:04:39.:04:42.

McLaren trying to push them and the pace suggests that Sebastian Vettel

:04:42.:04:47.

is the man for pole and the man for the win. But there is a real air of

:04:47.:04:50.

electricity here because we are getting close to the race that will

:04:50.:04:53.

decide the championship. championship is all important for

:04:53.:04:57.

two reasons, not just the drivers, but let's consider the constructors.

:04:57.:05:01.

When you talk about the drivers, you have five races to go, it is

:05:01.:05:03.

like the championship, the light has been turned on. Everything will

:05:03.:05:09.

be fast and furious from here on in. I say to everyone at home, make

:05:09.:05:13.

sure you watch these races. Make sure you watch the qualifying.

:05:13.:05:19.

This one is for those of you who weren't out at bed at 5am to see

:05:19.:05:23.

this first time around! Gary Anderson is in the pit lane

:05:23.:05:33.
:05:33.:05:42.

and in the commentary box David The Korean International Circuit in

:05:42.:05:45.

the south-west. Country provides the stage for the next act in the

:05:45.:05:49.

drama of the 2012 season. It is the only venue where Red Bull were

:05:49.:05:54.

beaten to pole throughout the whole of last year by Lewis Hamilton and

:05:54.:06:04.

McLaren. Qualifying takes place close to the city. This highly

:06:04.:06:11.

developed country which grew its economy through from the 60s to the

:06:11.:06:14.

90s managed to avoid recession and it is a Formula One facility that's

:06:14.:06:21.

on a grand scale with long straights, fast sweepers and tight

:06:21.:06:26.

twisty sections there is the end of the lap. There is a longer DRS, 80

:06:26.:06:30.

meters longer for race day, but as ever in qualifying, the DRS in

:06:30.:06:34.

enabled throughout the laps so they will use it on all the different

:06:34.:06:38.

straights and for David, it strikes me this place with its three distin

:06:38.:06:48.
:06:48.:06:52.

sectors, it has a different rhythm? In free practise yesterday we had

:06:53.:07:02.
:07:03.:07:09.

Michael Schumacher being held up by an HRT and and and and gis

:07:09.:07:13.

particular lating. Chatting to Gary Anderson. It is three sectors as

:07:13.:07:17.

you mentioned. The first part is about straight line speeds. That is

:07:17.:07:22.

a Monza section. The second sector is more about sweeping fast corners.

:07:22.:07:26.

It is about downforce performance and you enter the last section

:07:26.:07:33.

which is a Monty Carlo-style, Mickey Mouse section.

:07:33.:07:43.

We have seen the super soft used at different tracks. We saw it in

:07:43.:07:47.

Singapore and Canada. It is interesting that you have got high-

:07:47.:07:54.

speed corners on the mid-part of the lap and they can run the super

:07:54.:07:58.

soft? We heard from Christian Horner the difference between the

:07:58.:08:02.

two tyres this weekend has not been what we have been getting used to

:08:02.:08:06.

as a split between the prime and the option and the last Grand Prix

:08:06.:08:09.

in Japan, it was more than one second performance gain between the

:08:09.:08:13.

prime and the option. Here we are seeing a smaller gap and crucially,

:08:13.:08:17.

we are seeing the tyres hold on. It doesn't seem to be that they are

:08:17.:08:21.

able to do the time every time on the first lap. We saw Sebastian

:08:21.:08:31.

Vettel go fastest on the third lap. We could see certain teams dropping

:08:31.:08:35.

out of the operating window of these tyres and others benefiting.

:08:35.:08:41.

I don't see it as a fait accompli this is a Red Bull and let's have

:08:41.:08:46.

them ticking the boxes in qualifying. This could be mixed up.

:08:46.:08:51.

Alonso leads the championship by four four points from Vettel. Kimi

:08:51.:09:00.

Raikkonen is third place. Massa is ahead of Perez now courtesy of that

:09:00.:09:04.

podium finish last time, Massa has been behind Perez all season in

:09:04.:09:09.

terms of points. Mark Webber's problems with his car have been

:09:09.:09:16.

solved. So Webber will be out to qualify, but he didn't get a run on

:09:16.:09:21.

the super soft tyre. Fernando Alonso Was sixth fastest in the

:09:21.:09:26.

practise session this morning. Felipe Massa was eighth quickest in

:09:26.:09:31.

the constructors championship, Ferrari sit 20 points behind

:09:31.:09:35.

McLaren. A margin over Lotus, but nothing particularly comfortable.

:09:35.:09:40.

They are chasing to keep that advantage that they have for Alonso

:09:40.:09:43.

over Vettel, but they know that qualifying could be a tough one.

:09:43.:09:46.

There is Sebastian Vettel. The pole position winner last time out in

:09:46.:09:51.

Japan. He had four pole positions this year and of course, vitally

:09:51.:09:56.

for him, he went on to win the race with Alonso failing to score and

:09:56.:10:00.

closed the championship gap and Romain Grosjean might have been

:10:00.:10:08.

struggling on his first laps, but he has done well in qualifying. He

:10:08.:10:12.

qualified second in Hungary. You have Romain Grosjean in a car

:10:12.:10:16.

capable of making the top ten and we saw Sebastian Vettel walking

:10:16.:10:21.

through the back of the garage and we have only less than ten seconds

:10:21.:10:27.

to the start of the session. Tim Burton getting -- Timo Glock

:10:27.:10:31.

getting ready to go as well. The session gets underway.

:10:31.:10:35.

Heikki Kovalainen is the first on to the track in the Caterham.

:10:35.:10:40.

Kovalainen had a battle with his team-mate in practise. Petrov was

:10:40.:10:44.

quickest, some three tenths quickest in morning morning and

:10:44.:10:53.

Charles Pic was not far behind. Charles Pic was not far behind.

:10:53.:10:56.

Jenson Button is not not coming out straightaway the track is dusty. It

:10:56.:11:01.

is cleaning up. But you can see dust off the line and in the pit

:11:01.:11:10.

lane, David? The only supporting race is a a race of run what you

:11:10.:11:14.

have brung! I never saw such a weird selection of touring cars in

:11:14.:11:20.

my life. Not ideal ahead of a qualifying session to be going out

:11:20.:11:23.

and trying to discover where is the oil and the dirt that wasn't there

:11:23.:11:27.

in the free practise session. Time to check back in with Gary.

:11:27.:11:33.

Gary, what can we expect in terms of lap times to make it through to

:11:33.:11:39.

the top 17 which is what they are trying to do? If you are trying to

:11:39.:11:44.

predict from practise three, you would say 38.203 is OK, but the

:11:44.:11:49.

track has been evolving. There is more grip. If I was the top team I

:11:49.:11:53.

would make sure I was in the 38s before I would park the car in the

:11:53.:11:57.

garage. We will keep an eye on that. 1.38

:11:57.:12:06.

the time. Pole position last year was at 1.37.8. Lewis Hamilton did a

:12:06.:12:11.

1.37.5 last year. So we will keep an eye on the times. Heikki

:12:11.:12:16.

Kovalainen on the track. And all alone. There should be no issues

:12:16.:12:20.

providing no one comes out of the pit lane. A difficult pit lane exit.

:12:20.:12:27.

We were talking about it off air earlier, Ben. This is his opening

:12:27.:12:33.

section which is all about how fast can your car go in a straight line?

:12:33.:12:36.

It has this street circuit feel because this area around the track

:12:36.:12:42.

is meant to be developed into apartments and houses and shopping

:12:42.:12:46.

malls. It hasn't happened yet. A huge amount of energy going into

:12:46.:12:51.

the brakes there and another blast along the support pits for whenever

:12:51.:12:55.

they will have support races. I am sure the culture of motor racing

:12:55.:13:03.

will build here in Korea. Heikki is wide. Off apex turn five and look

:13:03.:13:09.

at this, hooking back over into the exit and into this section and this

:13:09.:13:14.

is one that when we we gets opportunity to see in-car footage

:13:14.:13:19.

it is a joy to watch the drivers taking a Grand Prix car at 150mph

:13:19.:13:23.

and letting the reigns lose and allowing it to deliver that

:13:23.:13:26.

impressive speed. From that, it starts to tighten up

:13:26.:13:30.

and you have got this really interesting double left-hander at

:13:30.:13:37.

turn 11 which Nico Hulkenberg mentioned to you. It spits you out,

:13:37.:13:41.

turn 12, and now you are coming into the really twisty bit? This is

:13:41.:13:45.

the end of the lap. You see the dust getting brought on to the

:13:45.:13:50.

circuit. As you run through the slow corners, you don't have the

:13:50.:13:55.

downforce. You have the long eject out of turn 17 through the short

:13:55.:14:00.

apex of 18 and the end of the lap. Where does this put him? Oh, pole

:14:00.:14:07.

position. He was the only man on the track, well done Heikki!

:14:07.:14:12.

A little bit off what he achieved this morning. Track temperatures

:14:12.:14:17.

are up three se grease since -- degrees since practise this morning.

:14:17.:14:21.

The track is cleaning up as we go throughout the course of the

:14:21.:14:25.

weekend. Sebastian Vettel is looking focused now as they get him

:14:25.:14:30.

ready to go. The other Caterham of Vitaly Petrov. They had a brake

:14:30.:14:36.

problem and the team were telling him not to overlap the brake and

:14:36.:14:41.

the throttle. We are on board now with Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi has this

:14:41.:14:44.

new exhaust system which they are hoping will provide them with more

:14:44.:14:50.

grip and more downforce. Let's just watch him as he goes on to his

:14:50.:14:59.

flying lap and watch the on board tell omtry -- telemetry. DRS and

:14:59.:15:03.

KERS being used on this long run out of turn two and then you just

:15:03.:15:07.

basically sit there and spot your braking point. There will be a huge

:15:07.:15:17.
:15:17.:15:26.

amount of energy when he hits the the top, popping out of the cockpit.

:15:26.:15:33.

Again, a large amount of energy, he gets the apex well. Then, an

:15:33.:15:42.

awkward section, you have to be patient. Releasing the last part of

:15:42.:15:52.
:15:52.:15:55.

KERS, after five corners, it shows how fast the opening lap is.

:15:55.:16:02.

A fairly tidy lap, traffic ahead which will cause an difficulties.

:16:02.:16:07.

He may end up with penalties for blocking, that was a Mercedes

:16:07.:16:14.

getting out of the way. He has Nico Rosberg in front of him. Hopefully

:16:14.:16:20.

that won't cost him too much. This may be a factor in qualifying, this

:16:20.:16:24.

final sector, it is almost impossible to overtake, you have to

:16:24.:16:32.

move off line. Has he got enough fuel? Probably not. What we have

:16:32.:16:42.
:16:42.:16:43.

seen this morning, looking at the yellow tyres... Dropping into 11,

:16:43.:16:47.

unquestionably he was held up, that was Romain Grosjean behind the

:16:47.:16:52.

Mercedes. They were ganging up together.

:16:52.:16:59.

Romain Grosjean, I believe, was on an out-lap, he was tried to get his

:16:59.:17:05.

car prepared. That shouldn't result in a penalty for the Mercedes car.

:17:05.:17:10.

We have seen this throughout the weekend already, the Ferraris are

:17:10.:17:16.

very fast on the straight line sections, but they lose out in the

:17:16.:17:22.

mid- part and final part, with the twisting. You get very different

:17:22.:17:26.

performers on different parts of the circuit. It is interesting to

:17:26.:17:33.

see the Ferrari philosophy, the engines are restricted to 18,000

:17:33.:17:38.

rpm, there is a freeze on development, so been quick in that

:17:38.:17:42.

first sector, as Fernando Alonso shows good pace, Nico Hulkenberg

:17:42.:17:52.
:17:52.:17:57.

went past. That first set it is about getting the drag from the car.

:17:57.:18:05.

He beats the time off maulden macro. They were down to 1.37s on the

:18:05.:18:12.

super soft tyres. Nico Hulkenberg has done a pretty

:18:12.:18:17.

good middle sector, not as quick as maulden macro, who has set the pace

:18:17.:18:27.
:18:27.:18:30.

currently. -- Maldonado. Nico Hulkenberg completes his lap.

:18:31.:18:37.

He goes bird on his first proper run. Quite a few cars are on track.

:18:37.:18:44.

Someone going very slowly, a white flag, and then... Narain

:18:44.:18:53.

Karthikeyan. The team radio was saying, no pedal. Clearly, there

:18:53.:18:59.

was some retardation suggesting the brake pedal went soft on him. That

:18:59.:19:02.

could have been a very uncomfortable situation, thankfully

:19:02.:19:09.

the other car cleared the apex of turn three. It shows FIA safety

:19:09.:19:17.

standards today, at a huge amount of run off for them to slide down.

:19:17.:19:23.

Pastor Maldonado looks as if he can improve on the second fastest.

:19:23.:19:32.

Plenty of front-runners to come out, and maulden macro stays second

:19:32.:19:42.
:19:42.:19:43.

fastest. -- Maldonado. That was a good lap, probably the fastest of

:19:43.:19:50.

all, yes, it is, Felipe Massa, on the yellow tie, the harder of the

:19:50.:20:00.
:20:00.:20:00.

two compounds. -- tyre. The early days in this qualifying

:20:00.:20:06.

session, but Felipe Massa is driving like a man with good news.

:20:06.:20:12.

Kimi Raikkonen improving on that time. It is interesting, Ben,

:20:12.:20:22.

people are choosing to do several laps. With a penalty of carrying

:20:22.:20:29.

more fuel. But they know they gain more from finding where the tyres

:20:29.:20:36.

are, gaining confidence. You can see how hard he is working the

:20:37.:20:43.

wheel. Into turn one. Finally, Mark Webber is heading out. Sebastian

:20:43.:20:48.

Vettel has gone out as well. Gary, just take a look at Lewis Hamilton

:20:48.:20:56.

here. In lock up into turn one, we have seen this over the weekend.

:20:56.:21:01.

have seen Lewis Hamilton in the run-off area, having difficulty

:21:01.:21:06.

getting the brakes into turn one. It can be a heating issue. They

:21:06.:21:14.

have plenty of the spot -- at stopping points, so it must be a

:21:14.:21:19.

fundamental engine issue. In turns of the difference between be two

:21:19.:21:23.

tyres, how many teams will run the super soft in this qualifying

:21:23.:21:33.
:21:33.:21:34.

session? There are only a few tenths difference. But that is

:21:34.:21:39.

really important. Going back to what David said about the brakes,

:21:39.:21:49.

and McLaren. You either brake well, or you lock the front tyres. The

:21:49.:21:58.

last thing you want to do... You can see Hamilton here. Kamui

:21:58.:22:05.

Kobayashi just crossing the line in 13th. Peter Sauber has handed the

:22:05.:22:11.

reins over to Monisha Kaltenborn. Celebrating his birthday it out

:22:11.:22:21.
:22:21.:22:21.

here in Korea. Schumacher, currently 6th fastest.

:22:21.:22:26.

You are riding with Lewis Hamilton, as he has to correct a little bit

:22:26.:22:32.

of a slide. Coming out of 16. He runs it wealth through, going for

:22:32.:22:42.
:22:42.:22:44.

the line. -- well through. It does seem as if Lewis Hamilton is

:22:44.:22:49.

unhappy with the balance of his car through the three practice sessions.

:22:49.:22:57.

It's the top 17 which count in Q1, and who will not make it through.

:22:57.:23:04.

At the moment, Mark Webber has yet to set a time, nor has Sebastian

:23:04.:23:12.

Vettel. Narain Karthikeyan is out of this session. He won't be going

:23:12.:23:19.

through in the HRT. Another good lap for Felipe Massa. He improves

:23:19.:23:26.

on his time, but not as quick as Kimi Raikkonen.

:23:26.:23:35.

Sebastian Vettel has been fastest in the middle sector. Across the

:23:35.:23:42.

line he went, fastest overall. Suddenly, six-tenths faster than

:23:42.:23:47.

anyone else. He he has done it on his third lap

:23:47.:23:52.

completed. Kimi Raikkonen took five laps to set his time. The problem

:23:52.:23:57.

is when you have to do multiple laps, the tyres have to divide

:23:57.:24:01.

kilometres total distance on them. The chemical change starts to take

:24:01.:24:10.

place as soon as you put beat her through energy on the racetrack. --

:24:10.:24:20.
:24:20.:24:32.

how early. Remember, Gary told us a low 1.39.

:24:32.:24:38.

Plenty of people are outside that at the moment. We will see a lot of

:24:38.:24:42.

track action, no surprises, in the final part of qualifying. Narain

:24:42.:24:47.

Karthikeyan will not be able to come back out again. The drop zone

:24:47.:24:52.

at the moment, Heikki Kovalainen and Petrov, Bruno Senna, Timo Glock

:24:52.:24:59.

and Charles Pic. And Pedro de la Rosa no doubt will get another run

:24:59.:25:04.

in before the end of this session. But, Narain Karthikeyan it is out.

:25:04.:25:10.

Red Bull, first and third. The Clarence second and 7th. Felipe

:25:10.:25:16.

Massa is faster than Fernando Alonso. Then Pedro de la Rosa --

:25:16.:25:26.
:25:26.:25:29.

Nico Rosberg. We now look at Pastor Maldonado. He has been pretty

:25:29.:25:33.

impressive on occasions, the last time he ran the super soft tyres in

:25:33.:25:38.

Singapore, he qualified in second place. We know he has good

:25:38.:25:41.

qualifying pace but Williams clearly uncomfortable. His team-

:25:41.:25:47.

mate sitting in 20th. It looks as if it is a battle between Toro

:25:47.:25:51.

Rosso and Williams for which one of those at two might drop out of the

:25:51.:25:57.

session. We're also seeing Paul di Resta choosing to go out on the

:25:57.:26:02.

super soft. Teams saying they are going for the tyre to give the

:26:02.:26:07.

marginally more pace. That tells you a lot about how important it is

:26:07.:26:17.

to make it through into that top 16. Turn one, not too deep. This long

:26:17.:26:24.

straight, the speed trap is at the end. Jean-Eric Vergne in Toro Rosso,

:26:24.:26:32.

he has the fastest speed at that speed trip -- track. A low figure

:26:32.:26:39.

for Pastor Maldonado as he comes down there. A surprise, given he

:26:39.:26:48.

had his DRS wide open. Could it be a KERS issue? A little bit

:26:48.:26:52.

surprising. We're presuming that figure is 100% accurate, it may not

:26:52.:26:59.

be. Whether he lifted off down the main straight and they have decided

:26:59.:27:04.

to go through on the next lap. Fernando Alonso, still sitting in

:27:04.:27:10.

the pit lane. Gary, you go bust your forecast earlier, are you

:27:11.:27:20.
:27:21.:27:22.

sticky with that? Yes, the track is changing quickly. He did that to

:27:22.:27:32.

7.6 this morning, he should be able to do 38.2. I think it will still

:27:32.:27:42.
:27:42.:27:42.

be in the 39.0 area. Mark Webber crosses the line, in

:27:42.:27:48.

the second, the fastest final sector of anybody. Lili two-tenths

:27:48.:27:55.

slower than Sebastian Vettel. Surely he won't have used his red

:27:55.:27:59.

tyres. Bruno Senna only made it into the final part of, find once

:27:59.:28:09.
:28:09.:28:16.

this year. -- part of qualifying. Sir Bert not looking as strong as

:28:16.:28:21.

in Japan last week when Kamui Kobayashi qualified.

:28:21.:28:26.

It does look as if they are struggling. Given that the tyres

:28:26.:28:33.

seem resilient, well that play into their hands tomorrow? We know they

:28:33.:28:38.

have been good on their ties, it may come into play on race day.

:28:38.:28:45.

Today is all about battling for who has the fastest car, and the

:28:45.:28:50.

benefit of not having to be hooked up into the middle of that pack

:28:50.:28:55.

which can be costly. The concertina effect into turn one and turn three,

:28:55.:28:58.

you would prefer to be closer to the front.

:28:58.:29:07.

A replay there, a lock-up, missing his apex. He made an adjustment on

:29:07.:29:11.

his steering wheel, that could be anything, the engine, a torque

:29:11.:29:19.

problem. When you lock up, you lose some bite from the front axle. You

:29:19.:29:24.

get a little bit wide, you have to use more steering angle to get the

:29:24.:29:31.

car turned, which compounds the time lost. An important lap, to get

:29:32.:29:37.

something representative. That should be safe, into tenth place.

:29:37.:29:47.
:29:47.:29:47.

Bruno Senna has done a 1:29.4. A more promising pace from the

:29:48.:29:57.

Sauber. Let us see what team-mate Perez does, asked to do another lap

:29:57.:30:07.
:30:07.:30:17.

what Sergio Perez is doing and I'm sure they are thinking, "Yes" every

:30:17.:30:23.

time he shows a bit of form. TEAM RADIO: We need another lap for

:30:23.:30:32.

sure. We are looking into it. We are looking into it. Yes, one more

:30:32.:30:42.
:30:42.:30:44.

time lap. Ricciardo does go sixth. Here is

:30:44.:30:48.

his team-mate, Jean-Eric Vergne. His qualifying improved in reen

:30:48.:30:54.

races and he has been much, much closer to Ricciardo. Let's see, he

:30:55.:30:59.

has outqualified him recently. Let's see if he can keep this up.

:30:59.:31:05.

He did drive here briefly in the Friday practise sessions. He goes

:31:05.:31:14.

fifth and that's a a fraction of a second quicker. Michael Schumacher

:31:14.:31:18.

is way down. He is in 18th place. He is in the drop zone and we're

:31:18.:31:22.

into the final part because the chequered flag is out now and

:31:22.:31:27.

Michael Schumacher doing his up most, you he is not -- but he is

:31:27.:31:33.

not looking particularly - he has got personal best in first and

:31:33.:31:39.

second sectors. Senna is in danger territory, but he is on track.

:31:39.:31:44.

Alonso trying to improve. Across goes Schumacher. Alonso needs to

:31:44.:31:48.

finish this lap off well to ensure he will go through into the next

:31:48.:31:55.

part of qualifying. He had to go for the super soft tyres, the the

:31:55.:31:59.

championship leader not in great shape. He is only 16th. He is only

:31:59.:32:05.

16th. Senna could go quicker, but he is the only one who could do at

:32:05.:32:12.

the moment. Senna is on a lap. The middle part is not brilliant. Is he

:32:12.:32:19.

going to get dropped out? Hamilton is 17th. Hamilton in 17th. Senna is

:32:19.:32:25.

back in the pits. Senna missed out again and that's desperately

:32:25.:32:28.

disappointing for him. Very disappointing for him and

:32:28.:32:34.

that's as close as you want to be to not making it throw. You have

:32:35.:32:43.

Hamilton and Alonso. Hamilton only 17th. And Alonso in

:32:43.:32:47.

16th place and it is, well, Senna, moving out of the way there. Well,

:32:47.:32:52.

he was told to abort the lap and that was very fair of Bruno Senna

:32:52.:32:58.

pulling off the line to allow the cars to go through, but

:32:58.:33:05.

disappointing. Four more qualifying attempts this this year and no seat

:33:05.:33:10.

for Bruno Senna as yet. Saturdays seem to be his bogey time.

:33:10.:33:16.

Those knocked out, Bruno Senna, Vitaly Petrov who went faster than

:33:16.:33:22.

Heikki Kovalainen, Charles Pic has outqualified Timo Glock, de la Rosa

:33:22.:33:31.

is out and so is is NARRATOis Karthikeyan. Who would

:33:31.:33:41.

have shot that a shot of Lewis Hamilton sitting in the garage was

:33:41.:33:46.

worth getting out of bed for! I wouldn't want to be sitting in

:33:46.:33:54.

the pits. Interesting. Here is de la Rosa making his way into the pit

:33:54.:34:01.

lane. We will look at his pit his testimony mate on the track. --

:34:01.:34:07.

team-mate on the track. He doesn't have a seat guaranteed for next

:34:07.:34:14.

year. Petrov is in danger of losing that seat. It could be all change.

:34:14.:34:18.

There has been rumours that Vitaly Petrov is struggling to raise

:34:18.:34:21.

finance and the way this sport operates, that's a necessity. Has

:34:21.:34:25.

he done enough for another team to take a look if he doesn't have

:34:25.:34:29.

money? I thought he did a good job last year. He hasn't, but we know

:34:29.:34:35.

that Kovalainen is a race winner. He was always going to be a tough

:34:35.:34:42.

competitor and team-mate. In a word, probably he hasn't done enough.

:34:42.:34:49.

We spoke to Karthikeyan. He was telling us they are improving the

:34:49.:34:53.

car and he has a failure of the front right brake disc. Neither of

:34:53.:34:57.

us have driven in Formula One, but we can imagine how scary that would

:34:57.:35:03.

be? When the brake disc breaks you are a passenger and he was a

:35:03.:35:07.

passenger from a long way out there. He was pirouetting down the track.

:35:07.:35:11.

It is not a nice feeling, he was lucky it was in qualifying and

:35:11.:35:14.

particularly in this qualifying so there were no cars around him and

:35:14.:35:18.

he escaped with just being able to make sure that the car runs

:35:18.:35:21.

tomorrow in the race. Vitaly Petrov quicker than his

:35:21.:35:23.

team-mate out there today. Let's tear from him.

:35:23.:35:29.

Tell us about your qualifying. You outqualified your team-mate which

:35:29.:35:36.

is one positive? It is a big positive moment. If you look back,

:35:36.:35:42.

it was a good surprise for all of us and we did a good job yesterday.

:35:42.:35:48.

We finished late. I think we will make a good set-up and that's why I

:35:48.:35:53.

was quick today. I'm really happy. He does still want a seat for next

:35:53.:35:57.

year and those performances will help him. Let's bring Ben and David

:35:57.:36:01.

help him. Let's bring Ben and David into the conversation. I spoke to

:36:01.:36:10.

Bob Fernly at Force India and he says it is a scrap between Mercedes

:36:10.:36:13.

and Force India for the final two slots in the final part of

:36:13.:36:19.

qualifying? It really is, Jake. That mid-field battle, it is all

:36:19.:36:25.

about constructors points, Mercedes versus Sauber. They are all chasing

:36:25.:36:28.

as many points as possible. Keep a close eye on the mid-field, but Red

:36:28.:36:32.

Bull are looking strong at the top. David, were you surprised with

:36:32.:36:37.

Kovalainen what he said to you? Well, I was surprised by his

:36:37.:36:42.

openness, but it did seem like his shoulders were down a bit. I wonder

:36:42.:36:46.

if that reflected his performance. He has been the energy in that team

:36:46.:36:56.

from a driving point view. I don't want to take anything away from

:36:56.:36:59.

Vitali, I wonder if it is a reflection of him not being in a

:36:59.:37:05.

happy place now. There was a rumour of a row between his management and

:37:05.:37:10.

the owners of that team. I wonder if you have heard anything?

:37:10.:37:14.

haven't. For me, it is one of the key aspects going forward.

:37:14.:37:24.
:37:24.:37:24.

It is time to watch the second part rushing to come out on to the

:37:24.:37:28.

circuit for this 15 minute session. Each session getting shorter. 10

:37:28.:37:33.

minutes for the film part. All about -- final part. All about

:37:33.:37:39.

getting into the top ten. Looking at those who had to use the super

:37:39.:37:49.
:37:49.:37:50.

soft tyre, one Ferrari did and one didn't. Massa didn't. Massa's boost

:37:50.:37:54.

in confidence in getting that podium last week seem to have fired

:37:54.:38:04.
:38:04.:38:06.

He was strong in prepractise in za in Suzuka. He was upgraded due to

:38:06.:38:10.

penalties applied. We see Sergio Perez. He decides to get out there

:38:10.:38:15.

nice and early on the super soft, the option tyres and building his

:38:15.:38:21.

lap and around the lapel receive various instructions to remind him

:38:21.:38:26.

to get the engine in the right mode. Working on building temperature in

:38:26.:38:32.

the brake and tyres and being followed out by his team-mate. This

:38:32.:38:39.

is a very questionable pit out. I am sure during the tomorrow, we

:38:39.:38:42.

will look at this. Gary, we are seeing the two Saubers

:38:43.:38:47.

out first. They are on the super soft tyre. Looking at the wear

:38:47.:38:51.

patterns that we have seen, they maybe able to get a reasonable lap

:38:51.:38:56.

in on a set of super softs they have run? I imagine they will go

:38:56.:39:03.

out for this run. This slow lap should clean up the right front

:39:03.:39:11.

where the graining is. It will be a tough session this because I think

:39:11.:39:20.

38.5 will see it through. When you look at the Q1, Hamilton did a

:39:20.:39:23.

39.18, ten cars if you blink, you will miss it.

:39:23.:39:28.

That's just how competitive it is. It is not as if this is a short

:39:28.:39:33.

track. It is three-and-a-half miles, 5.6 kilometres and the difference

:39:33.:39:36.

is that tiny. I heard a number of the drivers saying if it wean for

:39:36.:39:42.

its location and journey time from Europe it would be a perfect test

:39:42.:39:48.

track because it puts you on the top top edge of your top speed and

:39:48.:39:53.

you have the mechanical section so it ticks all the boxes as a real

:39:54.:39:58.

reflection of how you get the car working well and the tyres as we

:39:58.:40:07.

see Sergio Perez makes a nice A nice nice apex in turn one and gu

:40:07.:40:16.

for a nice -- you go for a nice 800 meter drive, creeping up to 200mph.

:40:16.:40:19.

Before hitting the brakes and down into the very, very tight turn

:40:19.:40:24.

three. A little bit of correction needed. He qualified 17th last year

:40:24.:40:34.

when he came for the first time driving for Sauber. They attempt ed

:40:34.:40:37.

a two stop. Last year, they were they were kind to their tyres and

:40:37.:40:42.

he had to make a late third stop with only a couple of laps to go.

:40:42.:40:46.

So that dropped them down the order from where they should have been.

:40:46.:40:51.

It doesn't look like the Sauber has the Suzuka qualifying pace they

:40:51.:40:57.

enjoyed a week ago. It shows how different this track is to Suzuka.

:40:57.:41:03.

What separates this circuit from Suzuka, there are a number of

:41:03.:41:08.

corners that lead into the next corner. In Suzuka and Spa, you get

:41:08.:41:14.

the impression they were designed by the natural path that people

:41:14.:41:18.

walked. When you start with a green field site and it is designed on a

:41:18.:41:22.

computer in Germany, a lot of the corners don't flow. You get a

:41:22.:41:27.

little bit out of sequence and you clip a kerb and you end up having

:41:27.:41:30.

to give away time because you haven't got the car on the right

:41:30.:41:34.

line. Let's see what the benchmark lap

:41:34.:41:43.

time is? 1.39.9. According to Gary that wouldn't be enough for top ten.

:41:43.:41:48.

He did a 38.6 earlier, but we think that was on a scrub set of tyres

:41:48.:41:52.

and if that's the case, it was a good opening gambit.

:41:52.:41:58.

TEAM RADIO: Jenson is a 12 second gap behind. We need to keep working

:41:58.:42:02.

the brakes. The teams informing the drivers

:42:02.:42:07.

about their position and where the traffic maybe and these guys

:42:07.:42:13.

obviously keeping a very wary eye on the track positioning. They

:42:13.:42:17.

cannot get done for holding up another car or it is a grid penalty

:42:17.:42:20.

for tomorrow. Jenson Button's engineer that

:42:20.:42:23.

passes that information, I think he has got one of the most soothing

:42:23.:42:28.

voices of the engineers. If I had to have someone reading me a

:42:28.:42:31.

bedtime story, I would choose that man!

:42:31.:42:40.

Webb err finishing -- Webber finish the lap. Turn 17, a little bit like

:42:40.:42:46.

Valencia. It is like a street crack. Webber is fastest for now. 1.38.2

:42:46.:42:56.

and that's a 1.38.5 for for Kobayashi. Paul di Resta is third.

:42:56.:43:01.

Jean-Eric Vergne is currently fifth. Let's see what Alonso does? He goes

:43:01.:43:05.

fastest of all so far. Looking a little bit better for Alonso than

:43:05.:43:10.

perhaps it did in the first session, but Vettel beating that. 1.37.7 for

:43:10.:43:15.

the Red Bull. Massa, the first set of the super

:43:15.:43:19.

soft tyres that we have seen Massa run in this session so far and now

:43:19.:43:23.

he is down towards the latter part of the lap as well. He comes past a

:43:23.:43:27.

big big grandstand on the outside of the two left-handers and tucks

:43:27.:43:31.

it in close to the wall. He missed the kerb on the left or the high

:43:31.:43:38.

kerb and he goes fourth quickest for now. So it is Vettel, London's

:43:38.:43:43.

Alonso, Mark Webber, Massa sharing the top spots at the moment.

:43:43.:43:47.

Exciting stuff as the lap times are tumbling and everyone knows they

:43:47.:43:51.

have got to get out there and get a feel for how this track is evolving

:43:51.:43:57.

and Lewis Hamilton we're seeing is and Jenson Button has just finished

:43:57.:44:03.

his lap, but we have got the information on Lewis Hamilton.

:44:03.:44:10.

Button down seven tenths of a second to Sebastian Vettel. It is a

:44:10.:44:15.

good lap. Is it enough? No, it is third fastest. Behind Alonso, just

:44:15.:44:19.

a fraction of a second so far behind Alonso and yes, another lock

:44:19.:44:24.

up, that's what we have been seeing a lot from the McLaren so far this

:44:24.:44:28.

weekend. He took pole position last year, but right now, it looks to be

:44:28.:44:35.

just a little struggle to get that car nice and neatly into turn one.

:44:35.:44:39.

Well, I think that was the opening part of his lap and that would have

:44:39.:44:44.

cost him time getting on the power. You gain time when you don't slow

:44:44.:44:48.

down enough on the way in and it is that compromise as to whether you

:44:48.:44:52.

are able to get the car rotated and get it turned and get the throttle

:44:52.:44:57.

open. Missing an apex by a small margin is a good thing.

:44:57.:45:02.

TEAM RADIO: Have another go, please. Have another go, please.

:45:02.:45:06.

They want to be safer than that so they have asked him to go again and

:45:06.:45:10.

the tyre is allowing them to do that which I find intriguing. 11th

:45:10.:45:16.

for the moment for Rosberg. He is in the drop zone. Rosberg, Perez,

:45:17.:45:20.

Nico Hulkenberg, Maldonado and Michael Schumacher all in the drop

:45:20.:45:25.

zone, but Michael Schumacher is on a lap. Gary, these super soft tyres

:45:25.:45:28.

are holding up very well in allowing people to go and do

:45:28.:45:38.
:45:38.:45:52.

on this second time lap. It depends on the car set up who gains the

:45:52.:46:02.
:46:02.:46:41.

bit of attention as the clock ticks away. The second part of qualifying,

:46:42.:46:51.
:46:52.:46:57.

Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi. Outside the top 10, Paul di Resta, Nico

:46:57.:47:03.

Rosberg, Perez, Nico Hulkenberg. And looking at the top speeds.

:47:03.:47:13.

huge gap. A replay of Jenson Button. The McLaren lock up. He seemed to

:47:13.:47:23.
:47:23.:47:39.

have a very stiff front end of the kilometres faster, and whether that

:47:39.:47:44.

remains to be seen, it gives them a useful speed advantage for tomorrow.

:47:44.:47:48.

Nico Hulkenberg has asked for some more front wing, he has understeer

:47:48.:47:53.

as well. A couple of drivers reported understeer, is that

:47:53.:48:00.

something to expect, Gary? softer the tyre, it is pushing at

:48:00.:48:08.

the front. They will have to live with that in the fast part. That's

:48:08.:48:18.
:48:18.:48:26.

OK with Newt tyres which have a lot The drivers who won't make it into

:48:26.:48:29.

the top 10 but we will see that change as we get ready for the next

:48:29.:48:33.

part. The psychologically, it makes a difference when you go up your

:48:34.:48:39.

last run. Sergio Perez, closing his eyes, visualising what he needs to

:48:39.:48:45.

do. Let's say you are Lewis Hamilton in third place, you'll go

:48:45.:48:52.

out thinking, it is for the others to beat me. But for Nico Rosberg,

:48:52.:48:58.

in P12, or Perez, if you don't deliver on this lap, you are

:48:58.:49:05.

definitely not in the top 10. This is an in a battle, driver against

:49:05.:49:09.

driver, without actually seeing each other on the race track. It's

:49:09.:49:16.

about strength of character. When you say you need more front wing,

:49:16.:49:24.

do you on the next set of tyre. TEAM RADIO: New options, he said

:49:24.:49:29.

their fronts wasn't ready for the new sector.

:49:29.:49:33.

Interesting Feedback, both sides of the garage working together. In it

:49:33.:49:43.

was a case of clarifying. Soaking up information, passing it on to

:49:43.:49:48.

Michael who is looking at these stronger of the two Mercedes driver.

:49:48.:49:53.

As I say that, Nico Rosberg will now go out. Michael is looking

:49:53.:49:58.

pretty handy, pitting his tyres switched on for the first sector

:49:59.:50:05.

which Nico Rosberg has been struggling with. Michael had a

:50:05.:50:11.

fourth-place finish, up to 2010, his best finish of his comeback.

:50:11.:50:16.

Whether he can do something here today. We are going to find out

:50:16.:50:20.

pretty soon, just two minutes to go in the second part of qualifying,

:50:20.:50:27.

the battle to get into the top 10. Paul di Resta heads into the first

:50:27.:50:31.

corner, Felipe Massa keeps up of the way.

:50:31.:50:41.
:50:41.:50:42.

TEAM RADIO: Looked after the tyres in the high speed. -- look. You do

:50:42.:50:46.

that by simply not leaning on to the side of the car through the

:50:46.:50:54.

turns. You have nothing left for the last sector when you have less

:50:54.:50:59.

downforce when the car is running at a lower speed. It costs him more

:50:59.:51:04.

time. A lock up from thought macro but I don't think that will cost

:51:04.:51:14.
:51:14.:51:25.

particular, the last one, where the aerodynamics are applying

:51:25.:51:32.

themselves and pushing the car down on to the ground. You can see how

:51:32.:51:35.

they are pulling the car and it is responding.

:51:36.:51:45.
:51:46.:51:52.

If a tight and a tricky section, lap could be put in him into

:51:52.:52:02.
:52:02.:52:04.

contention to put him into the top Resta is only 11, he hasn't done

:52:04.:52:09.

enough. And his team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, pushing it out, has he

:52:09.:52:19.

done enough? 7th. He is definitely up there, is it enough to stay

:52:19.:52:29.
:52:29.:52:30.

there? 1:38.4. It put cent in the top 10. The chequered flag is up.

:52:30.:52:36.

For the second race in succession, A Williams fails to get into the

:52:36.:52:41.

second part of qualifying. Let us hear the last part of the

:52:41.:52:51.
:52:51.:52:52.

lap. The yellow means they have to show a slower sector time. Perez

:52:52.:52:57.

goes tent. He might be allowed to kick that if he shows his third and

:52:57.:53:02.

final set that is slower. Only in that section where the yellow flag

:53:02.:53:12.

it is. Nico Rosberg, up to seventh. Kimi goes Feb. Jenson Button

:53:12.:53:18.

crosses the line as well. But he is not in, he is 11th, he has not made

:53:18.:53:23.

it through. Hamilton has. It is about how much they slow down in

:53:23.:53:28.

the final set tough. In Japan, we saw this, and drivers were allowed

:53:28.:53:38.

to keep their times. It comes down to tiny amounts and real judgment

:53:38.:53:46.

by the drivers to finish a lap, and control that final set to speed.

:53:46.:53:54.

They have it displayed in the centre of their steering wheel.

:53:54.:54:02.

TEAM RADIO: Week are P11. That is disappointing.

:54:02.:54:09.

Let us take a look back. Down into turn one, we saw repeatedly the

:54:09.:54:16.

McLaren locking up. Excuse me, this is not turn one, turn 11 or turn 12.

:54:16.:54:23.

I will get it right this time, turn four, costing him time. A localised

:54:23.:54:28.

hot spot on the tyre. Disappointment for Jenson Button

:54:28.:54:36.

and Daniel Ricciardo. Both Toro Rossos not making it into the top

:54:36.:54:41.

Pastor Maldonado are not making it through, nor Paul di Resta, he will

:54:41.:54:51.
:54:51.:55:20.

with the Sauber, the big pointing - - big talking point is Jenson

:55:20.:55:26.

Button, 11th. I don't know why this has happened, this is a quick car.

:55:26.:55:32.

He must have got his positioning wrong. It is a shame. You take your

:55:32.:55:37.

bike away and suddenly everyone rushes past. It shows how hard it

:55:37.:55:42.

is. Riding on board here, clearly an issue for Daniel Ricciardo, it

:55:42.:55:47.

makes it hard for the other of riders to not push through the

:55:47.:55:50.

yellow flag sector because they are not sure if they will be punished,

:55:50.:55:56.

Eddie? Your instinct is to go as fast as you can. You try to put the

:55:56.:56:01.

left flag out of your mind but you dare not because you will lose grid

:56:01.:56:11.
:56:11.:56:13.

position and be penalised. TEAM RADIO: Gearbox. Confirmation that

:56:13.:56:20.

Daniel Ricciardo had the problem. How tight visit to get into the top

:56:20.:56:29.

10? We have lost both Saubers, we have lost Force India, mild

:56:29.:56:34.

Barnardo -- Pastor Maldonado. We will have a look at dens and's

:56:34.:56:39.

efforts out there. We will wonder a long with Paul di Resta, thanks for

:56:40.:56:48.

talking to us, it was looking like a great lap? For there was a

:56:48.:56:53.

Ferrari coming out of the pit lane, I over-compensated. That was

:56:53.:57:02.

already a stumbling block. At the end, I actually went 100 slower

:57:02.:57:09.

than I did, it is unfortunate. Traffic has cost us getting into Q3.

:57:10.:57:16.

How important is it to have someone like Nico. Both you are fast, do

:57:16.:57:20.

you look to see what time he has done when you get out of the car?

:57:20.:57:24.

And of course you do. The frustrating thing is we did a very

:57:24.:57:29.

good time at the start of the session. We haven't been able to go

:57:29.:57:33.

faster purely because of traffic which has been an issue in Suzuka

:57:33.:57:38.

and here. It is costing people valuable places. It has put us in a

:57:38.:57:44.

difficult situation tomorrow because our car seemed strong.

:57:44.:57:49.

is you out on track, what is going through your head at this point?

:57:49.:57:53.

You can't actually see but the car is very sensitive to what is going

:57:53.:57:58.

on. As we get further into the corner, you pick up turbulent air,

:57:58.:58:08.

and unfortunately you need every valuable grip. The I am getting

:58:08.:58:12.

deja-vu, ensure we have the same conversation in Japan a week ago.

:58:12.:58:17.

That raised didn't pan out as you wanted but it was a show of what

:58:17.:58:21.

Force India can do. You must think if things go your way you can still

:58:21.:58:26.

pick up some points tomorrow? would say even more so based on a

:58:26.:58:31.

performance yesterday. We need to go into tomorrow and do a better

:58:32.:58:36.

job. We have a new set of tyres which will be fallible given it is

:58:36.:58:46.
:58:46.:58:48.

a super soft compound. -- valuable. Paul, is it more exhausting walking

:58:48.:58:57.

down the pit lane? Particularly when you have to speak to us!

:58:57.:59:02.

is a long pit lane. Heading back to get to his garage. A difficult

:59:02.:59:07.

session for him? He is bitterly disappointed. He knows that time is

:59:07.:59:11.

in him and in the car, he just didn't put it up together. For

:59:12.:59:16.

whatever reason, he taught about fighting for every little corner,

:59:16.:59:24.

it eluded him at the end. What is more disappointing, he knows

:59:24.:59:28.

himself and Nico Hulkenberg, everyone is looking at those two,

:59:28.:59:32.

because one of them in my opinion is going to go. Let us show you a

:59:32.:59:37.

bit of Jenson Button, Kenya give us some idea how hard it is around the

:59:37.:59:43.

circuit to set your car up for this little Mickey Mouse section and to

:59:43.:59:48.

have speed in the first set of which is about minimum drag and low

:59:48.:59:53.

downforce, David? You want to have high tops bid which means you want

:59:53.:00:03.
:00:03.:00:04.

a small wing angle. -- top speed. In this section, you don't have the

:00:04.:00:09.

load pushing down on the car. It does seem an apparent is struggling

:00:09.:00:19.
:00:19.:00:25.

to get enough front load on the underway and Sebastian Vettel

:00:25.:00:29.

looking to take back-to-back pole positions. Ofs on pole last -- he

:00:29.:00:33.

was on pole last time out in Japan. Can he do it here? He has been on

:00:33.:00:37.

pole in the past here, but last year he got beaten by a certain

:00:37.:00:42.

Lewis Hamilton. A Hamilton looking to try and stay upfront and Alonso

:00:43.:00:50.

still looking for a top four start which he hasn't had in the last few

:00:50.:00:54.

races. What is going on? Rosberg sat with the green light and

:00:54.:00:59.

Michael Schumacher doing the same. So I would be, there is clearly a

:00:59.:01:03.

strategy and Michael Schumacher is sitting there. So unless he felt,

:01:03.:01:08.

"Well, look, I need to get clear space so I will let the cars go."

:01:08.:01:12.

But I will be curious if Gary has a line on this, because Rosberg sat

:01:12.:01:18.

for 20 20 seconds before he moved and Michael Schumacher did the same

:01:18.:01:25.

thing. Why would you want to cool your tyres? Gary, have you got any

:01:25.:01:29.

idea why that might be? You bring the tyres up to the temperature you

:01:29.:01:33.

want to get out of the pits with and you are sitting there and not

:01:33.:01:38.

only is the tyres getting cooler, but the engine is getting hotter.

:01:38.:01:43.

Maybe he has a problem. Vetting has gone out behind the

:01:43.:01:53.

bunch and Nico Hulkenberg. Those two had a massive fight last year.

:01:53.:02:02.

It didn't look like Mark was making it easy for Lewis to pass. They

:02:02.:02:06.

need to find space which given there is a few cars within just

:02:06.:02:11.

looking here, we have Nico Hulkenberg passing through through

:02:11.:02:16.

we have got Rosberg coming out of S 2, they are condensed in one area

:02:16.:02:22.

of the track. One is going to come unstuck with traffic because you

:02:22.:02:27.

can't guarantee that everyone will drive a clear lap.

:02:27.:02:32.

Gary, do you have a prediction for a pole time? I think this year, we

:02:32.:02:40.

will be looking at 37.2, 37.3. The track keeps on on improving and you

:02:40.:02:47.

are never sure if you will lose two or three tenths.

:02:47.:02:51.

Alonso and just four points separate him in and Sebastian

:02:51.:02:54.

Vettel in the drivers championship. This has got to be a truly special

:02:54.:02:57.

lap from the World Championship leader to keep the fight going

:02:57.:03:02.

knowing the Red Bulls are fast in Korea. No, this first part

:03:02.:03:06.

straightforward. He managed to get through turns one and two without

:03:06.:03:12.

any lock ups. Let's see how he does on three? No big issue there. It

:03:12.:03:18.

looks to me like he is giving Grosjean a bit of extra tow. Let's

:03:18.:03:23.

keep an eye on what Grosjean does in these early parts of the lap. He

:03:23.:03:32.

goes wide as he runs through four. Sounds hesitant to me as he builds

:03:32.:03:36.

this opening lap in the last part of qualifying.

:03:36.:03:42.

Interestingly, Nico Hulkenberg has come back into the pits. It looks

:03:42.:03:47.

as though Nico Hulkenberg will not put in a represent I have

:03:47.:03:51.

representative lap time. We have seen that before. Nico Hulkenberg

:03:51.:03:55.

has come back into the pits which is interesting. Massa is on track

:03:55.:04:02.

at the same time as Alonso. Alonso has been doing a fine job boosted

:04:02.:04:12.
:04:12.:04:14.

with the podium last time and now. In Monza both cars were quick.

:04:14.:04:21.

Monza is quicker. Massa throws down the gauntlet. Let's see Alonso.

:04:21.:04:30.

Alonso and is faster. 37.6. What about Hamilton? Can Hamilton go

:04:30.:04:37.

ahead of the Ferraris? No, he is only third. Webber goes second. Owe

:04:37.:04:41.

splits the Ferraris, but Alonso is in front. Sebastian Vettel, well,

:04:42.:04:46.

he could be the one to watch. Here comes Vettel out of the final

:04:46.:04:51.

corner. Vettel goes faster by by three tenths of a second. Sebastian

:04:51.:04:53.

Vettel showing the form he did if practise this morning.

:04:53.:04:59.

Well, an impressive lap, but an impressive prediction from Gary

:04:59.:05:05.

Anderson did he not not say a 37.3. We have five minutes to go. We

:05:05.:05:09.

might see that being improved. I guess, well, there is a surprise, a

:05:09.:05:15.

lock up in the McLaren. This time we have the one McLaren in the top

:05:15.:05:18.

ten and it is Lewis Hamilton, but Vettel has the advantage here from

:05:18.:05:21.

Alonso the two championship contenders one and two. Webber is

:05:21.:05:27.

third. Massa fourth. Hamilton fifth and the two Lotuses of Kimi

:05:27.:05:30.

Raikkonen and Grosjean running different specifications on the

:05:30.:05:33.

cars and Michael Schumacher and Rosberg who have not done a lap

:05:33.:05:38.

time as yet and you are watching inside the McLaren pit and the

:05:38.:05:42.

Mercedes pit, sorry. You had the curious leaving of the

:05:42.:05:47.

pit lane. Are they just registering a time and seeing what else is

:05:47.:05:51.

going on? Are they going to go and take a shot at it here? They have

:05:51.:05:55.

been out and come back in. So the order is based on your race number

:05:56.:06:02.

in fact. So Michael Schumacher has the advantage over Nico Rosberg.

:06:02.:06:09.

TEAM RADIO: We need a little bit in sector two, but it is a very tidy

:06:09.:06:14.

lap. They are always pushing for more.

:06:14.:06:20.

He wants to be purple in all sectors. There is his engineer

:06:20.:06:25.

there, Rocky as he is known. The Frenchman gives that information to

:06:25.:06:30.

the young German in the Austrian team based in Britain. A truly

:06:30.:06:35.

international nature of Formula One. It is a real mix, isn't it? The

:06:35.:06:39.

engineer for for Fernando Alonso there. They have managed to get

:06:39.:06:44.

themselves into second place ahead of the other Red Bull. Red Bull

:06:44.:06:50.

locked out of the front row in Japan. Webber at a a disadvantage

:06:50.:06:55.

today because he didn't get to run the super soft tyres m morning.

:06:55.:07:00.

Gary, we could still see improvements on the next run?

:07:00.:07:05.

wouldn't surprise me. Sebastian Vettel is in an inevitable position.

:07:05.:07:10.

He has three tenths on Fernando Alonso. He can push the limits.

:07:10.:07:14.

Will he use the tyres because this race is going to be won by strategy

:07:14.:07:18.

and these tyres are strange. The super softs grain. You have got to

:07:18.:07:21.

get through that spell, but they are quicker and they are quicker on

:07:21.:07:25.

the race run as well. He did a stable race run yesterday. So he

:07:25.:07:30.

may use strategy and not bother doing the complete run.

:07:30.:07:34.

Right. Nico Hulkenberg is coming out so maybe he will do a lap, but

:07:34.:07:39.

a real attempt at a lap and there is a new set of tyres for Romain

:07:39.:07:42.

Grosjean as well. Not too much difference between the two Lotus

:07:42.:07:46.

team-mates. They are sixth and seventh currently, but Kimi

:07:46.:07:50.

Raikkonen having the new exhaust set up on his car. Grosjean has the

:07:50.:07:54.

older speck. A new set of tyres for Sebastian Vettel. He has the

:07:55.:07:58.

advantage in qualifying. Just untwo-and-a-half minutes to go.

:07:58.:08:01.

Fernando Alonso has come out of his pits already and he is on track.

:08:01.:08:05.

Sebastian Vettel leaves the pit garage and let's look at how busy

:08:05.:08:11.

it was a moment ago as Hamilton in particular there, getting past the

:08:11.:08:15.

Mercedes. Well, he is entitled to do so. He

:08:15.:08:20.

felt that the Mercedes was being cheeky and he thought, "I will have

:08:20.:08:27.

some of that." As long as you are not enDear dangering anyone --

:08:28.:08:34.

endangering anyone in the pit pit area. It didn't look like there was

:08:34.:08:40.

anyone he could run-down. Singapore went well for them and

:08:40.:08:45.

Japan wasn't so good. They will be pleased particularly when when

:08:45.:08:50.

McLaren only managed to get one of their cars in the top ten. Jenson

:08:50.:08:55.

Button qualified in 11th. Everybody finds themselves within a sector

:08:55.:08:58.

which lasts 40 seconds on this racetrack and the last man who will

:08:58.:09:01.

cross the line will be Romain Grosjean, second last man will be

:09:01.:09:05.

Sebastian Vettel. So Vettel in the prime position to be able to back

:09:06.:09:10.

out and save some of that option tyre should no one be improving on

:09:10.:09:15.

his time and meanwhile, we are going to see Nico Hulkenberg has

:09:15.:09:25.

just just crossing the line and Mark Webber. He has gone at 1.37.

:09:25.:09:34.

They have not given on these tyres on this track track. He is using

:09:34.:09:39.

experience and he is make making the rest up.

:09:39.:09:46.

There is a lot of sitting and waiting doing 200mph. He will flap

:09:46.:09:50.

open as he comes up on to the next straight. Out of turn three,

:09:50.:09:54.

approaching turn four. Another heavy braking area, but now we get

:09:54.:10:01.

into the combination stuff. Low speed corners here. Looking tidy.

:10:01.:10:07.

Doesn't run too deep into the corner. A personal best so far for

:10:07.:10:12.

Mark Webber. He now gets into the fast flowing section of the middle

:10:12.:10:17.

part of the lap. How brave can you be with DRS?

:10:17.:10:23.

Flat out there. Down a gear or two. He is half a second up on his

:10:23.:10:27.

previous best. We can see that on the right of the display just below

:10:27.:10:34.

the flashing lights. A good lap from Mark Webber so far if he can

:10:34.:10:38.

hold this together. He has lost a little bit of time now. He is on

:10:38.:10:43.

the cusp of challenging Sebastian Vettel for pole position.

:10:43.:10:52.

The fastest first sector has gone to Rosberg. Keep an eye on Webber.

:10:52.:10:58.

Looking reasonable, but will it be enough to put him ahead of Vettel?

:10:58.:11:04.

Not only a front row start, but he has beaten his team-mate. Hamilton

:11:04.:11:09.

had a good lap. Hamilton is fastest in the middle sector. Hamilton

:11:09.:11:13.

crosses the line and he is third. He can't match the Red Bulls in the

:11:13.:11:18.

latter part of the lap and Rosberg goes eighth.

:11:18.:11:23.

Vettel had a bad first sector. It looks like Vettel is out of it for

:11:23.:11:29.

pole position. Alonso has been displaced by Lewis Hamilton. The

:11:29.:11:33.

championship leader is in fourth position. Across the line comes the

:11:33.:11:37.

Lotus. Here comes Vettel as well. Watch out for Vettel in president

:11:37.:11:41.

background and Massa in sixth and Vettel crosses the line and he

:11:41.:11:45.

hasn't been able to displace his team-mate with the final run.

:11:45.:11:53.

Grosjean goes seventh so he is outqualified by by his team-mate,

:11:53.:11:57.

but Mark Webber has taken pole. He had pole at Monaco, but it was a

:11:57.:12:02.

pole he inherited. He has taken pole position in a true battle with

:12:02.:12:09.

team-mate, Sebastian Vettel and he took it by 74,000 thsz of a second

:12:09.:12:13.

-- 74,000ths of a second. He has taken Renault's first ever

:12:14.:12:21.

owl position. -- first ever pole position. How

:12:21.:12:26.

many times have we seen that from Mark Webber? When he looks under

:12:26.:12:30.

pressure, he can deliver U That was a brilliant performance by

:12:30.:12:35.

Mark Webber. I wonder what story Vettel has to tell? You noticed he

:12:35.:12:41.

lost time on one of the sectors. I wonder if if that was a mistake or

:12:41.:12:50.

if something went wrong. It is a Red Bulloch out in Korea.

:12:50.:12:56.

TEAM RADIO: That's it Mark, P1. Pole position, fantastic job.

:12:56.:13:00.

you. A fairly restrained response from

:13:00.:13:06.

Mark Webber, but it is Red Bulls upfront.

:13:06.:13:09.

Alonso in terms of chasing the championship, he will be pleased

:13:09.:13:13.

that Vettel got beaten to the top spot. But there were no points in

:13:13.:13:16.

qualifying, it all matters in the race. Nico Hulkenberg has ended up

:13:16.:13:21.

eighth ahead of the Mercedes so they did all run at the end and

:13:21.:13:29.

Nico Hulkenberg eighth. Rosberg outqualified Michael Schumacher. An

:13:29.:13:34.

interesting top ten, Hamilton brings the car in third. Third

:13:34.:13:39.

place on the grid for Lewis Hamilton. The other one down in

:13:39.:13:43.

11th place for Jenson Button. Mark Webber can celebrate. It is the

:13:43.:13:50.

sixth Red Bull of 2012. It is his 11th career pole as well and this

:13:50.:13:54.

one, very fully deserved considering the problems he had in

:13:54.:13:59.

morning practise. Mark Webber has not won a Grand Prix when he hasn't

:13:59.:14:03.

started on the front row. He laid down a positive marker for the week

:14:03.:14:08.

ahead. Lewis Hamilton takes a good, close look at the tyres on the Red

:14:08.:14:13.

Bull. That tells its own story. Yeah, the body language, he is

:14:13.:14:18.

looking at every aspect of the Red Bull, particularly the tyres, but

:14:18.:14:25.

he is really studying it! I think that Alonso won't be too

:14:26.:14:30.

disappointed with that qualifying. He is only three tenths slower by

:14:30.:14:35.

pole man, Mark Webber. And that does show an improvement in overall

:14:35.:14:39.

performance from the Ferrari. That's a good effort, indeed.

:14:39.:14:47.

Coming up to the weighbridge, Kimi Raikkonen. Fifth fastest, Kimi

:14:47.:14:51.

Raikkonen. He is still on the pace, less than a tenth slower than

:14:51.:14:55.

Alonso. Mark Webber on pole position by a fraction from team-

:14:55.:15:01.

mate, Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton third. Alonso fourth. Kimi

:15:01.:15:07.

Raikkonen fifth and Felipe Massa in sixth.

:15:07.:15:17.
:15:17.:15:32.

This is assuming there is no Williams will be disappointed with

:15:32.:15:42.
:15:42.:15:48.

time during the session, with the brake problem. Mark Webber has

:15:49.:15:56.

taken pole position. Renault have now scored 200 pole positions, only

:15:56.:16:06.
:16:06.:16:13.

battle for the title, struggling to match the pace of this car. If TEAM

:16:13.:16:23.
:16:23.:16:32.

sounding under pressure in the cockpit. A I would like to hear

:16:32.:16:39.

exactly what he said, he was asking about Felipe Massa? He had pole

:16:39.:16:46.

position all locked up. You can see by his position, he is bemused. It

:16:46.:16:53.

is not bad. He has a team-mate. Mark Webber knows the game. He is a

:16:53.:16:59.

wily old fox as he described himself. He is a team player. It is

:16:59.:17:04.

a very good decision for Red Bull. As they walk out to get their

:17:04.:17:09.

photos in the obligatory press call, Lewis is looking pretty happy to be

:17:09.:17:14.

mixing it with the Red Bulls. How will mark be feeling, beating his

:17:14.:17:24.

team-mate? Mark has been brushed by Sebastian. This is very good news,

:17:24.:17:30.

relief for him. He has signed the next season with his team. He wants

:17:30.:17:35.

to be a big player. This is endorsing what he thinks. He thinks

:17:35.:17:39.

he can win. Look at the statistics, Mark Webber is tough to beat when

:17:39.:17:47.

he starts at the front. Let us find out what the team principal thinks.

:17:47.:17:57.
:17:57.:18:01.

Another Red Bull front row. Mark in pole position, Sebastian in second.

:18:01.:18:11.
:18:11.:18:12.

He a really good lap together, great pole for him. You had longer

:18:12.:18:19.

runs yesterday on the soft tyres. Both drivers were reasonably happy

:18:19.:18:23.

with the long runs. We need to make sure we get through the first

:18:23.:18:29.

couple of corners this weekend. Make sure we convert great

:18:29.:18:34.

qualifying into a great result. Fernando was three-tenths slower,

:18:35.:18:39.

was that better than you expected from the Ferrari? He he is still

:18:39.:18:43.

right there, nothing can be discounted. All the major

:18:43.:18:48.

contenders are pretty much up there. It will be a fascinating race.

:18:48.:18:54.

luck tomorrow. Two important points, we have got to get through the

:18:54.:18:58.

first couple of corners OK, a veiled threat to his drivers not to

:18:59.:19:04.

run into each other. The team boss, he has become an expert. He knows

:19:04.:19:10.

what is going on. He will sit down with his drivers and say, listen,

:19:10.:19:15.

there's a lot of sponsors, people in the factory, keep banking them

:19:15.:19:25.
:19:25.:19:27.

and do not undo all of that. -- thanking. He also mentioned race

:19:27.:19:32.

pace which will be ominous for the other teams. Often they are not as

:19:32.:19:38.

good in the race as qualifying. They have upped their game.

:19:38.:19:43.

Traditionally, they do not bring new parts. They feel this

:19:43.:19:47.

Championship is so finely poised they have to do something. They

:19:47.:19:52.

have responded brilliantly. A very strong performance by Red Bull.

:19:52.:19:58.

Lewis Hamilton also impressing today. Mixed for McLaren. Lewis

:19:58.:20:04.

will start bird. Martin Whitmarsh is with Gary Anderson.

:20:04.:20:14.
:20:14.:20:15.

Lewis got into third. An excellent lap, we didn't think he would put

:20:15.:20:22.

that in. We have had some good long run pace this weekend. Starting on

:20:22.:20:29.

the second row, you are in with a decent shout in the race. Sebastian,

:20:29.:20:33.

Lois, Fernando, all queued up behind Mark, will make it quite

:20:33.:20:40.

exciting I am sure. Jenson is back, gives him an opportunity to try a

:20:40.:20:44.

different tyre strategy. We tried to look on the positive side.

:20:44.:20:51.

Unlucky. The yellow flag. That is the pressure in qualifying, you

:20:51.:20:57.

have to get it right every lap, in case there is a red or yellow flag.

:20:57.:21:07.
:21:07.:21:13.

He didn't go through by four 1,000ths of a second. He has a new

:21:13.:21:20.

option, and a new primes. We all tried to do something different.

:21:20.:21:25.

Good luck tomorrow. Martin alluded to teams which are

:21:25.:21:30.

better in the race than qualifying, am I right in thinking they will

:21:30.:21:36.

secretly be happy to be two-tenths behind the Red Bull? For them, it

:21:36.:21:41.

is the wrong driver, they are losing Lewis at the end of the air.

:21:41.:21:45.

He is still in the Championship hunt for them. They are thinking in

:21:46.:21:51.

the future, drivers and engineers think didn't leave. The owners and

:21:51.:21:54.

the people who are structuring the team are thinking about the

:21:55.:22:00.

longevity, the future, which is Jenson Button and Perez. What will

:22:00.:22:05.

happen, different to what he is saying to us, he is thinking, we

:22:05.:22:09.

really need to start the team- building from here. I'm so pleased

:22:09.:22:15.

that was a qualified session were getting up for, for you. A

:22:15.:22:20.

worthwhile one. It is tight at the top and Ferrari are in the mix as

:22:20.:22:28.

well, let us hear from the boss. You must be pretty pleased? We are

:22:28.:22:36.

never pleased because we would like it to be better. It is important,

:22:36.:22:44.

if you remember, in a Singapore and Suzuka, it is another step in the

:22:44.:22:53.

right direction. That is the situation. It is important to do

:22:53.:22:59.

well tomorrow. And on the super soft thyme a Grier today, that was

:22:59.:23:05.

a consistent run from Fernando. Yesterday, on Friday the race pace

:23:05.:23:09.

was not bad. Let us hope to have a clean start with no problem. Good

:23:09.:23:15.

luck. What about the men driving the

:23:15.:23:21.

cars? Let's hear from the top four. Congratulations, a hard fought pole

:23:21.:23:26.

position. Her first official pole position of the year. It was a

:23:26.:23:33.

tight session. Yes. With the session unfolding, people were

:23:33.:23:39.

having different balance issues, on different compounds, on the same

:23:39.:23:46.

compound within different qualifying sessions. I was happy to

:23:46.:23:51.

recover in the first Qthree-run. you look at qualifying, the first

:23:51.:23:59.

and second was good, Q3, we lost a little bit. I probably started to

:23:59.:24:03.

do something in sector two which wasn't going in the right direction

:24:03.:24:10.

and I lost a little bit. Not entirely happy with the final lap.

:24:10.:24:15.

I feel great, really happy that I finally got a in-lap. Qualifying

:24:15.:24:19.

wasn't going as smoothly as it has in previous times. The last race

:24:19.:24:25.

was pretty disappointing for us. We have to make sure we get as high up

:24:25.:24:35.
:24:35.:24:40.

as possible. Q1 and Q2, were problems. First in Q1, first in Q2.

:24:40.:24:50.
:24:50.:24:51.

A strong car for them. But, we have a team. There is a start, a

:24:51.:24:58.

strategy, time management, and on that we are the strongest. Looking

:24:58.:25:05.

to get away from the first corner pretty well. That is important. Two

:25:05.:25:15.
:25:15.:25:19.

Let us show you who was on pole position, Mark Webber, head of

:25:19.:25:27.

Sebastian Vettel. Loads of title pretenders at the front of the grid.

:25:27.:25:33.

A strong qualifying showing from Nico Hulkenberg. Just behind them,

:25:33.:25:38.

Jenson Button had a struggle today, and Kamui Kobayashi and Paul di

:25:38.:25:48.
:25:48.:25:58.

Resta he did not make it to the The H R Ts are bringing up the rear.

:25:58.:26:02.

We have been speaking about this being one of the final races of the

:26:02.:26:07.

year. There is a real electricity in the year, the Cabinet battle is

:26:07.:26:11.

starting here. They were fighting in the pit lane, this is indicative

:26:11.:26:17.

how desperate they were to get out on track, that was Hamilton.

:26:17.:26:24.

talked about it early. Fighting on the pit lane. The Championship has

:26:24.:26:31.

become so juicy, everything to play for, the front two positions, it is

:26:31.:26:36.

electric. This is going to be a titanic battle for tomorrow and for

:26:36.:26:41.

the remainder of the season. titanic effort from Jenson Button

:26:41.:26:45.

if he can do something special from 11th place.

:26:45.:26:49.

Was there a problem out there, was it the end of flak? What you put it

:26:49.:26:55.

down to? The reason my first run wasn't quick in Q2, I locked up,

:26:55.:27:00.

the front left. I had to go down to first gear, it cost me time. I

:27:01.:27:06.

wasn't worried because I thought the next run, an easy time to find,

:27:06.:27:14.

but a yellow flag. Telling us he locked up. One man who nailed the

:27:14.:27:24.
:27:24.:27:28.

leper macro, -- lap, Mark Webber. Listen to that high-speed section,

:27:28.:27:35.

that is when a Grand Prix car feels alive. That middle sector was about

:27:35.:27:40.

high-speed stuff. He is not short of bravery. He kept it together. No

:27:40.:27:45.

big fighting there will at this stage. Look at the remaining

:27:45.:27:50.

corners as they unfold, but how close he was on the left-hand side.

:27:50.:27:55.

A little lock up in 16, he gets a bit wide, early on the throttle as

:27:55.:28:03.

he filters through 17. DRS open early, across the line. A rather

:28:03.:28:09.

tidy lap. A tidy race would suit Red Bull

:28:09.:28:13.

find tomorrow. Set your alarm for 6am tomorrow morning. If you can't
