The Brazilian Grand Prix - Highlights Formula 1

Is Leaving Brazil, there will be some emotions clearly, I have put a

long time into this, and a long time to get there. Last day at the

office. In Formula One. Got to try to treat it like another race. I

think definitely different emotions this morning. It starts to hit a

little bit that, yeah, it is the last time you will be doing this as

an F one driver, that is fine, that is good. What I want is basically,

it is not a sad moment but a proud moment. It is just emotions that you

have to accept that you have got to be able to let go. The messages I

have, have just been completely overwhelming, I can't believe, yeah.

The amount of people that enjoyed watching me race. Welcome to the

final day in school, how do you feel? Very good, ready to go and see

how we go. Is it possible to win? Of course. You don't want to test that,

really, he's lost it and you's not good enough. Over one lap that I

think obviously I have lost probably a little bit of speed. That will

happen, I'm not as fast as I was when I was 25. I think I raced hard

and fair, I generally liked it, didn't give up my positions easy.

Pretty consistent in terms of no real, maybe superweaknesses or

superstrengths, just generally pretty solid as a top-flight Formula

One driver. Yeah, I'm very proud, I think I have been dealt a very good

hand. A lot of races, some very big highlights obviously. I will

certainly remember where I started and where I have come from. I never

envisaged I would have the career I had. P it is Mark's last day, and

many thanks for him for allowing us to be part of his journey as a

Formula One driverment welcome to Brazil. The final countdown and the

last time we will see Felipe Massa in a Ferrari as well.

story of qualifying. By the end of it,

The Ferrari of Fernando Alonso seemed to enjoy the tricky

conditions, and he equalled his best qualifying performance of the season

with third. Mercedes had been quick all weekend, Hamilton was fasters 0

on the intermediates in Q 1, but on Q 3 he was fifth. Nico Rosberg was

second, six tenths from home. Sebastian Vettel claimed pole

position, come rain for shine's the man to beat.

Vettel is the man with the clear view, taking pole position. Rosberg

over his Lights out and away we go. Vettel

and Rosberg go together, Alonso sneaking up the outside, but it is

Rosberg and Hamilton who make as good start, Rosberg leads, Vettel

into second. Then Hamilton, Alonso in third place, Massa making up

ground as well. He just drops in behind Mark Webber, but a very good

start by Rosberg. He hooked it up and got the perfect STAFRMENT you

saw that Sebastian Vettel had to go defensive for Fernando Alonso. That

just allowed a clear run for Rosberg all the way up the inside. It all

looks clean so far. This is where we saw Vettel get spun round earlier.

This is the top four at the moment. They accelerate in the inlegaled

section. Hamilton, look how he's on the grass turning in. He was

surprised how early Hamilton rolled out of the break. He had to go wider

as he entered the turn. Vettel is getting himself into position, no

DRS, I suspect he won't have any cares left over after the start as

well. Rosberg vulnerable. Here comes Vettel on the charge. No

DRS on the opening lap, not allowed on the first lap. Vettel doesn't

cautious he blasts past Nico Rosberg, on the outside, has he got

the line into the corner, yes, Alonso and Hamilton side-by-side

into the turn. Hamilton is into third.

Hamilton has got through into fourth. No sign of lack of

commitment from Mark Webber in his last Grand Prix. Extremely fair for

Hamilton, he left him enough space and did the sensible thing as Mark

showed his commitment around the outside in seven.

Heikki Kovalainen started 11st but down in 15th place, Di Resta down in

17th as well. Not a good first lap for him. Look who leads, it is

Sebastian Vettel already beginning to open up the advantage.

Jenson Button locked up in turn one, he needs to watch out he doesn't end

up with flat spot. Rosberg has to go defensive into turn four with

Alonso. DRS is enabled. Clearly the gap is less than a second. Alonso

will be in position to try to affect a pass as we get across

start-finish. Can he chase after him Sebastian

Vettel, has he the pace in dry conditions. All the teams are

learning, seeing how the cars react and the tyres react, Mark Webber

closing on Nico Rosberg, DRS has been reenabled, it has according to

the information. Grosjean has pulled off to the side of the track,

promoting Hulkenberg to seventh. You can see unusually for Vettel at

the start he bogs down, that allows Alonso to come up to the right. He

defends that. Meanwhile Rosberg had a completely clear run, all the way

into turn one. We have seen contact through the first section in

previous races, everyone keeping it sensible. I suspect if this was the

first race of the year it might be some what different. 19 race starts

behind them. You can see Kovalainen in the back just get absolutely

swamped as he goes off the line. All those sensible people at the front

finding that I way and giving space where necessary. Kovalainen was

swamped, stationary. This is Alonso's start from on board. He

short Fifty Shrifted across. After the race we will hear about that,

just listen... Just seemed to judder and bog down, whatever the cause of

that was, it didn't sound like a lot of wheel.

Mark Webber is sneaked up on but he has the line as they go through

four. Webber has got further in his last race than you did. He's well

into this one running Rosberg will have to keep his eye on his

team-mate. Lewis Hamilton not far behind him at all. Massa in the

background too. Rosberg having to fight pretty hard. If the conditions

stay dry, I would say Alonso has it very, very effective in his race

car. Two main overtaking parts. Into turn one and turn four. Long straits

leading into those turns. Alonso's straight qualifying speed was faster

than Vettel. This is Romain Grosjean sprinting his way back to the

pitlane, having abandoned his car, a very sad way to end his season a

strong end to the seen in terms of his driving ability. Sadly it is not

to be. Lotus will not be able to challenge for that third or fourth

place in the constructor's championship. Kovalainen still down

the field. In 17th position. I wonder if he has any chance of

scoring points here today. On board with Lewis Hamilton, slightly

different crash helmet for Brazil, celebrating the colours. He's

closing on his team-mate here. Nico Rosberg up towards the first corner.

Not quite close enough to challenge there. A little lock-up. As he ran

in coming off the back of his team-mate, he lost more than the

front wheel. Graining is where the surface of the tyre is disrupted By

the track surface. We haven't seen the surface before. Graining it one

of the limiting factors. A radio message relaying to Mark Webber

saying a reminder to enjoy it. He is enjoy t he's a podium position.

Grosjean not enjoying it, trudging back to the Lotus pit. This is

Adrian Sutil a moment ago, Sutton versus Guthrie, he has been driving

well in these lap, he has got himself into -- Adrian Sutil versus

Esteban Gutierrez, driving well in these laps. Showing's not at all

happy with the movement from that McLaren. Jenson Button making the

pass there, it was a DRS pass, coming out of turn three.

Rosberg has kept his tyres better, into the puts has come Jean-Eric

Vergne, this is early. Lap 11 could be turning this into a three-stop

race. He's going on to the harder tyre. Two stops is a few seconds

quicker than three in an ideal world, which we don't live. They

look like they are going like that this afternoon. Let's see how far

the race leaders will go, that will give us a good indication what they

are planning. We would think they will get up towards the 20, and

maybe lap 16 is the beginning of a window for a two-stop race. The

track will change and you may see longer stints in the second part of

the race. We have to keep an eye on that. Alonso versus Webber, this is

for second place, remember. As Sebastian Vettel is continuing to

open his advantage. It is up to 9. 1 seconds. Webber was not close

enough. Watching the graphics to show if they are using their battery

power. On board with Mark Webber, he has DRS, that means less drag. Is he

using his battery curb power? Not at the moment. He will use that out of

turn 12, that will give him a boost up the hill into the DRS zone across

the start-finish line. We saw exactly that from Vettel in

qualifying, a large part of that was he couldn't get full power in a lot

of places in the damp conditions. Both Mark and Alonso looking like

Alonso stragically using his KR SFOR defence and Mark for defence.

They have both done exactly the same number of Grand Prix, 214 Grand Prix

coming into this, and no further action on the incident dean Perez

and Di Resta earlier on in the race. Vettel leading from Alonso and

Webber. Webber goes into second position.

Alonso had no answer for that. You could see that early on that he had

a great exit. Alonso was a little wide through 12, and the consequence

of that is such a short apex corner that he was just a bit later getting

on the throttle, and Mark was able to use that momentum, it is quite a

climb out of 12 up over the hill through the kink and down across the

start-finish line. This is how Webber got past Alonso.

Straight forward DRS pass, we will see that, Alonso doesn't make it

difficult for his old buddy. Not really friends to show themselves on

the race track. A great deal of respect for him he went defensive

and wide on the exit of turn four. Perez manages to keep it together

through five. That is where he crashed in qualifying. Seeing a

message as we see the tyre, bits of rubber being thrown up in the air as

they go up on the concern. Look at the wobble on the front tyre. This

is Button on the inside but Hulkenberg carries more speed

through outside line. What will happen on the corner, here comes

Button on the inside, he has the momentum and will take the place.

Button into 7th. He was in momentum and DRS. Some radio messages to

Rosberg, he's asking why he's struggling with the rear tyres and

what is the areobalance on the second car. That is surprising he

doesn't know the set up on the other car in the Grand Prix. Ricciardo

coming in, that will hand the place to perperks slightly earlier than

they would have wished. But they were losing performance, so time to

change the tyres. Look at that, Massa gets past rows ruchings that

puts Massa into fifth place. We need to stay out for a minute,

there is a risk of showers. We are hearing that from a couple of teams,

Chilcot has been told to watch for showers, Rosberg told to watch out

for showers. Rosberg left the door open, it was late. I suspect that

Massa wasn't entirely convinced as he hit the brakes into the turn that

he could do the pass. Look at the marker boards, 150. It was late in

the braking zone that Rosberg pulled over and let him go.

Veg veg is still there and he takes the place back, he as going to lose

another place. He looked unsure where to put the

car. Sebastian there is a few spots of

rain in the air, we don't think it is serious at the moment, we are

sticking to plan. A few spots of rain, he had a look up the inside.

Now this is an opportunity, as we see, Massa has been in and pitted,

Perez has come in for McLaren. The first of the big boys, Ferrari there

making the stop. Jean-Eric Vergne is going to have a

going back at him as they go down the straight. He's got a chance on

the outside, Kovalainen should be able to fend him off the inside,

traffic ahead. Just to complicated the issue. Final low Kovalainen

should be safe. He's the one and only Lotus still in the race. We

lost Grosjean a while ago, stopped the only retirement of the race and

he's talking to me. A disappointing way to end the

season, what happened out there? I don't know, I don't kn exactly what

happened, I just saw a lot of smoke and no more power. We they de sided

to quit 70 laps too early. This is racing. Jenson Button gets past

Daniel Ricciardo. It brings him into eighth place at this stage. Waiting

for a few other front runners to make stops before getting restarted.

Perez is at the back of the group. He's trying to close up to Pastor

Maldonado. There is Button trying to get past Esteban Gutierrez. I don't

think there is going to be a lot he can do. It just depends on how

quickly Button can make the most of it. He has done it no problem at all

on the fresh tyres. You need to trust the man you are passing that

he won't let the car drift wide and touch you.

De La Rosa into the -- Rosberg into the pits, not record-breaking

territory, but fairly good. Hulkenberg going side-by-side with

Maldonado, Egypt using -- again using that wide line. Rosberg

rejoins. Interestingly Rosberg is out behind Button. So Button's

progress continues. If you think that Nico Rosberg starred on the

front row today, Jenson Button started all the way down in 15th,

yet now a third of the way through the race and he's already got you

past Nico Rosberg. It is a sign that the Mercedes is struggling but

McLaren is going pretty well. Red Bull going out, this will be for

Webber, Vettel is at the first corner, so Mark Webber is the first

to link with the Red Bull guys. He was trading lap times and cited

quicker than Sebastian Vettel, he brought the lap down. No, slow stop.

Not a mammothly slow, but 5. 4 seconds. After the record they got

of 1. 9 seconds it did feel like an age. Didn't it. Alonso has gone

through. There he is. He will come out in front of Webber. He will have

to do it all again. VRJT All that hard work to get past undone by the

stop. Box, box, box. We have Red Bull put

that mistake behind them, Sebastian Vettel will be coming in on this

lap. Webber having dropped back is now in third place. Massa is still

in fourth. Let's see if the Red Bull pitstop goes cleanly for his

team-mate. Looking anxious as he comes in. That was OK, it Hall

Milton won before in Brazil, snatching it off Massa. Despite

Massa winning that day. Now we will see them racing against each other

here in Massa's final race with Ferrari. A couple of pairings to

keep an eye on. Alonso versus Webber, and Massa versus Hamilton.

Jenson Button is catching a bit in sixth place. What went on here? It

looked to me like it was the right rear, possibly, was still working,

the left year gunman is off, the right rear gunman has an issue of

some kind. A little slow reaction to the jack man pulling away at the

front. So everyone has made a pitstop,

let's run you through the order. Vettel leads as they come across the

line they will see what the gap is. It is 10. 4 seconds. Alonso third,

Massa in fourth chased by Hamilton. Now there is an incident involving

mass upped investigation, crossing the He has got a drive-thru penalty,

Massa marks a massive bearing for Ferrari on the constructor's

championship. It pushes him down. What a disappointing way to go.

Rules are rules but that sucks! That just, we're sometimes... Massa has a

drive through, so don't challenge him. Hamilton can back off, wait for

the opportunity and that really spoils the show for us, because

really beginning to enjoy that. Massa has been driving well in the

last few Grand Prixes, Hamilton trying to size him up for the pass.

Now it is easy pickings, a drive through penalty that will cost him

around 15-17 seconds here. That will certainly drop him way down the

order. We should get it into the top ten. A couple of laps into which

they will take it. He will come inbetween that, Perez and that

Hulkenberg battle. That will keep him maybe 9th position. Will they

leave him out as late as possible to make sure Hamilton doesn't gain the

ground and it will hurt him to be there. You are not going to want to

help the free run of Hamilton on to the front of Alonso, if we assume it

has the pace to challenge the other Ferrari.

Unfor the flatly we have a drive through penalty for crossing the

white line. There you go. Can you take a penalty at the end of this

lap. So pass through at the end of this lap. That is unbelievable,

unbelievable, unbelievable. Unacceptable. A very unhappy Felipe

Massa, on his home turf, you can understand why he would be

complaining. I guess we will see him coming in beyond this lap. No we're

not. He's staying out there. I wonder if he's staying out there on

very much on purpose. On protest, I think. I wonder. Hamilton still

hasn't been able to get past him, he's in fifth place, behind him, is

this helping Button. It is a little bit, he's 8. 8 seconds behind them

in sixth position. Rosberg is seventh, Perez eighth, Hulkenberg

ninth and Ricciardo tenth. This is Williams against Williams. Pastor

Maldonado, he's making the move down the inside, and they kept it clean,

thankfully. We will take it on the view of this rotating camera.

Rosberg and Perez in a fight for position for fifth place. Button

going quickly having made his second pitstop already. Fastest in the

middle section to anybody. The hard compound tyre goes on. Button is on

the softer compound tyre. Rosberg he has gone on to the harder compound

as well. Both on the same type of tyre, no change in relative

position. Perez was wide there. He has lost ground as a result of it.

He has got in front of Button. The battle on between the McLaren

He's struggling on these tyres doing quite a lot of laps, look how much

quicker he is out of the final Connor up through the hill through

the sweeping curves that lead him on to the start-finish rate. This will

be a relatively easy past, Di Resta goes to the inside and no problem

for mass. -- Massa. He has to focus on trying to catch Perez. Can the

Ferrari catch the McLaren up ahead of him. Let's remember that Chilcot

is Max Chilton is still on for completing every race this year as a

rookie driver and beating the record. He's still out there,

running 21st and last, 14 seconds behind his team-mate, Jules Bianchi.

We are on board for Vettel, this time it is De La Rosa going past

him. It is a surprise, he clearly doesn't have the speed at the

moment. It is Ricciardo gone past him. He is staying out there.

Ricciardo was 69 last time around. 2 for race

Bottas, Bottas. Absolutely, was there contact . Has there been

contact? That is where it was. Hamilton of the car on the inside,

they helped each other and that explains it. When I saw that,

contact between the two, Lewis Hamilton's right rear tyre and

Bottas's right rear tyre. Anybody at fault there. How would you read that

one? You are not allowed to crowd a car off the circuit, there was

plenty of room for Bottas off the white line, you could see Hamilton

coming across to the right, through the braking. But whether you can say

it was enough to warrant a penalty or not, we need to wait and see. I

think he turned into me. Unsurprising what Bottas's opinion

on that was. Was that my fault? I we don't quite understand it, but we

are going to have to take it. Keep pushing as much as you can. The

latter part of the season hasn't gone to plan as Hamilton calls in.

This is what the stewards feel, he moved to the left, defended and

coming back towards the right when the contact happened. There was

still space on the outside of the circuit, so Bottas did have room to

still keep moving, but any way. There is a damage on the suspension

there for Pic, is that a consequence of the off, or is that the reason?

That front wheel is bouncing in the air, I suspect that is rear

suspension damage. He's not getting the car to a gap where the marshalls

can see it easily. That is an uphill section. Well yeah, look it is

suspension damage on that car. Something broken in the car.

Something broke on the car. OK, understood.

Maldonado spins to the rear, to bring the car back in lion, and

there is Jenson Button, who is lapping him. Trying to get past,

suddenly finding the Williams, that is not where you really want to be.

Maldonado hopefully keeps out of his way. He's not racing him for

position. Button does go the. Rosberg, some 2.7 seconds behind.

Button couldn't afford to lose much time, but safely through. Hopefully

we will have another view of that. I suspect Jean-Eric Vergne drops into

turn one, the gap is open, goes for it, and Maldonado has contact. The

door is wide, wide open and Maldonado slams it shut. Jean-Eric

Vergne was on the concern trying to get out of the way. I think you have

got to say that Maldonado brought that on himself on himself. He's

down the hill to the next section, gets sideways. Gets on the kerb and

as the car reacts to that. Max Chilton reporting over the radio he

has a bad vibration, that is a worry, considering he is trying to

finish every Grand Prix of his rookie career, something that has

never been done in terms of numbers. It would have been 1 Grand Prixes

without a non-finish. There are concerns here. But we are counting

the laps down. A big moment there again from Esteban Gutierrez. Just a

word on the smaller teams, Bianchi, last lap, 17. 8, and Alonso 17. 4,

just a few tenths away from a Ferrari. Unfortunately he's two laps

and further down the field! Chilton shalt last come into the pits. Maybe

there is more of a problem, or maybe they are going for a change of

tyres. But yeah, he's just changing tyres and going back on his way.

They want that car to make it to the finish. They should be classified

with two laps to go. He should have achieved his target. No change

between these guys, Di Resta fending off Esteban Gutierrez, who will end

the season as the top rookie in the points. He scored six points,

curtesy mainly of the good result in Japan, he was seventh in Japan. Mark

Webber is now very much counting down to the end of his Formula One

year, he will end it in God style by finishing on the podium. Once again,

nobody has had an answer today for this man, Sebastian Vettel,

controlling the pace of the race throughout throughout, and didn't

actually get into the first corner ahead for a change. Had to fight his

way in front. Once he had done that, it has been pretty much plain

sailing. Thankfully for him was there was a double stop. It has been

fairly dominant display. A bit of chat going on at Ferrari. I

understood the English bit. 5.7 seconds behind. Looks like he's all

set up for a podium finish. A whole series of them earlier on this year,

finishing second to Vettel on many occasion, the leaders are on to

their final laps. Look at this, Esteban Gutierrez is with Adrian

Sutil right behind him. He has caught the other two, so he's been

gaining on them. There is just the one lap now in which to try to get

past him. Some consolation for Mark Webber, second this afternoon but

has the fastest race lap. Not the bad thing to take away from your

Grand Prix career. Another fastest lap to add to his tally over his

career. His 215th Grand Prix coming to an end. It will be his

19th-fastest lap in his career. It will also be his 42nd podium finish

in that fantastic career. But you can't take anything away from the

26-year-old here, Sebastian Vettel, who has trounced Mark Webber over

the last couple of years. He's also managed to win four World

Championships and he comes through. Sebastian Vettel wins in Brazil, and

he equals one of the oldest records in Formula One, nine consecutive

Grand Prix wins and he's the only driver to have done that in one sea

on. Mark Webber finshes in second place in his final Grand Prix, what

a way to bow out of Formula One, he will continue racing sports cars and

go to Porsche as one of the fastest drivers still at the top of his

game. Alonso finshes a fine third, first podium since Singapore. That

brings Ferrari some relief after a difficult latter part to the season.

We are now going to be waiting for Jenson Button to record his best

finish of 2013. McLaren finally with a fourth finish, they end up the

season without a podium. But that will give them a little bit of a

boost at the end of the year. Rosberg finshes fifth, Perez a

strong sixth, Massa finshes in seventh, there is delight once again

at Red Bull. It doesn't get any better than that. A 1-2 finish. As

we said at everyone at home knows, it has been a dominant display. As

we close out the 2. 4 V 8 formula. Nobody has ever done what you have

just done. In the history of the sport. Guys I'm so proud of you, I

love you guys. Remember this, enjoy this, enjoy this moment. Yes! We did

it! This is unbelievable. The last win of the 2. 4 V8 era has gone to

Sebastian Vettel. That is so suitable when he has dominated the

last few years. Webber, is he trying to take his crash helmet off. He's

unclicking and taking his helmet off. Don't try this at home kids,

he's a professional and driving very, very slowly, and well, wants

to feel this the wind in his hair. I have never seen that before. The

final slowdown slap for Mark Webber, lovely to see. What a great career

he has had. Nice job, mate, brilliant, I know we made it pretty

difficult for you, great race craft and driving from you. Fantastic

career, brilliant working with you, you can be proud of everything you

have done. Because we certainly are, well done. I hope they said that

before he took his crash helmet off. He still has his ear clueing plugs

in, he has the connection for the car. More doughnuts for Sebastian

Vettel, it is becoming a bit of a trade mark for him to enjoy the

moment as he enjoys the victory. The fans will be soaking this up. A

lovely way to end the season for Sebastian Vettel, just getting into

the pitlane. Has to make it back to park firmly or else a penalty. 39th

win of his remarkable career. Hole win and fastest lap triple, because

Mark Webber snatched the fastest lap. One for the Australian. Equal

lying Michael Schumacher's record as well of sump -- equalising Michael

Schumacher's record of 13 wins. More doughnuts for Felipe Massa. That's

certainly creating a lot of excitement for the Brazilian fans.

He's doing a Spanish wave rather than a doughnut. Vettel out of the

car to celebrate his dominant end to the season. Unbeaten since July.

Since the Belgian Grand Prix, they have never, ever seen a run like

this. Mark Webber enjoying the moment as well. There is something

that we haven't seen too often. A bit of a friendly clap on the back

to Sebastian Vettel to Mark Webber. There is Alonso. Mark throwing his

helmet to his trainer and rembering he needed it for the driver

weigh-in, never be weighed without your helmet? Same to be thrown out

of second place after all this! Christian Horner celebrating with

both drivers. Weather they have got on or not over the years, it has

been an incredible and successful pairing, Sebastian Vettel and Mark

Webber will be one of the most successful pairings in history. A

remarkable journey to do what the team has done. Who ever would have

thought that what started out as Stewart Grand Prix, fell to Jaguar

and has come back so much and had so much success. It is part of that

driver pairing, Mark has great skills behind the wheel and pushed

Sebastian to be as good as he has turned out to be. Fernando Alonso

does come on to the podium. There is Mark Webber, soaking up the

atmosphere. But it is Sebastian Vettel once again who will take to

the top step. Mark Webber is going to enjoy this. He's down and Webber

is down on the podium. But he doesn't care. He's still in one

piece and Vettel and Alonso will make it a podium to remember, I'm

sure. The results:

It is funny in the simulator this felt like a special track for us,

pleased with fourth, this is almost as we came here aiming for that.

Great job by everyone, and we needed this at the end of the year,

especially myself I had a tough ride the last few races. We were waiting

for some rain at one point at the end of the race, to mix a little, we

felt more competitive in rain also. It didn't come for the race. No

safety cars no nothing, so not a boring race, but a little bit

frustrating being behind the Red Bull, not quick enough. A special

day, because I think we have had challenges over time, but you know

it is easier to probably have an easier relationship with Fernando

because he's on the same team. To finish on with these guys on the

podium, they have been the best of the generation, I have raced them a

lot. To finish with those guys was nice for me. Because it is still

meaning a lot to me showing I can still drive well at the end of my

career. When we came the second time it was quite confusing, it was a

late call, when I got on top of the hill at the pitlane I saw the guys

already. Then I was counting 1-2-3, front right missing again, same as

last year. They had a tyre there but there was marks, because he was then

by that time right behind me. Then, yeah, get another tyre I was

screaming inside my helmet. Then the tyre arrived, yes, who has taken the

blanket off, eventually some guy did it, put it on and then I didn't get

the light turning off, we forgot to turn that off as well. It is not, no

I don't want to give the team hard time. We had phenomenal stop, that

was the longest we had, but we still managed to recover both of us, it
