Good morning, welcome back to China, if you joined us for practice one,

:01:10.:01:14.

if you didn't, welcome to China. This is free practice two, it is

:01:14.:01:19.

the second session of two. We are in the pit lane and Ben Edwardss is

:01:19.:01:22.

in commentary, and our technical analyst, Gary Anderson joining us

:01:22.:01:28.

to discuss what we saw in free practice earlier. Mercedes very

:01:28.:01:34.

quick out of the box, good lap times, last week again Nico Rosberg,

:01:34.:01:38.

last year Nico Rosberg was in pole position. That surprised everyone?

:01:38.:01:44.

They were good in the first couple of races and they stepped it up and

:01:44.:01:47.

they weren't caught. Luke Shuey of third. The longer corners here,

:01:48.:01:52.

they seemed to have the balance through theers and get the throttle

:01:52.:01:56.

back in and come off the corner very quickly. It seems a good car

:01:56.:02:00.

on this type of track. You can't take too much from free practice in

:02:00.:02:02.

terms of times, they are testing different things. If we have a lock

:02:02.:02:07.

at the times from this morning. We can see they were considerably

:02:07.:02:10.

can see they were considerably quicker than the re- of the field.

:02:10.:02:15.

Rosberg was quicker than last year, they have improved the car, the

:02:15.:02:19.

track conditions are changing but the two Red Bulls there, third and

:02:19.:02:22.

fourth, so that's going to be interesting, we are always sure

:02:22.:02:25.

that Red Bull do a very constructive job, they do their

:02:25.:02:30.

homework veryle well. We never see their true performance until

:02:30.:02:36.

qualifying. That's true. Mark did come out like a scalded cat, you

:02:36.:02:43.

wonder if he's revved up after the team orders incident in Malaysia.

:02:43.:02:47.

We know what happened at Silverstone? Mark believes in

:02:47.:02:51.

himself and that he's as quick as Sebatian Vettel. That controversy

:02:51.:02:55.

happened three weeks ago, this is the first time to show it. He has

:02:55.:02:58.

to go quicker than Sebatian Vettel in all sessions and qualifying and

:02:58.:03:03.

the race, he has proved a point.S This is the second session of three.

:03:03.:03:07.

It is the same as qualifying and the race on Sunday? Track

:03:07.:03:11.

temperatures are getting higher. It is very important to do your race

:03:11.:03:15.

run on the harder tire and make sure you have good stability and

:03:15.:03:20.

sure you have good stability and try a quick lap on the softer tyre.

:03:21.:03:27.

What is the latest, good news, I'm down at the McLaren garage, Sergio

:03:27.:03:31.

Perez will be running, no problems for him. It was on his in-lap, he

:03:31.:03:35.

was getting ready to come into the pits, he cooled down his tyres and

:03:35.:03:41.

was going slower and in the pit lane he just lost control and did

:03:41.:03:45.

exactly what Lewis Hamilton did a few years ago, watching his team-

:03:46.:03:50.

mates and took the wrong tips. He crashed and did some damage to the

:03:50.:03:56.

nose, it was an old speck nose, no problem, they put the new one on.

:03:56.:04:00.

He will go out in free practice. You were talking about the sun, it

:04:00.:04:04.

is beautiful here, it makes such a difference to last year. The track

:04:04.:04:08.

temperature 35 degrees, and the air temperature 22 degrees.

:04:08.:04:13.

That has gone up a bit since this morning, it was 30 degrees. It is

:04:13.:04:17.

warmer. I wonder if we can see the incident from Sergio Perez, if you

:04:17.:04:20.

didn't catch it earlier, this is what we were talking about. Coming

:04:20.:04:27.

in off the track here straight up into the pit lane and he locked it

:04:27.:04:30.

up, front tyres no temperature in them. From a team point of view

:04:30.:04:35.

they made an error, his tyres have got cold and he suffered the

:04:35.:04:39.

consequences because of that. are you expecting for this session?

:04:39.:04:44.

This is the true session, we will see good performance in some of the

:04:44.:04:49.

cars lap time-wise, a more true picture. We have to wait and see.

:04:49.:04:54.

The Mercedes looks pretty good. We go to the commentary box.

:04:54.:04:58.

Thank you very much, the first session was relatively quiet apart

:04:58.:05:01.

from the incident for Sergio Perez at the end. Most others got a

:05:01.:05:07.

decent number of laps in. Felipe Massa had the fewers number at 14.

:05:07.:05:13.

We saw the odd spin, Esteban Gutierrez had a moment on the first

:05:14.:05:18.

corner. Kimi Raikkonen had a spin, that is unusual, but he did have

:05:18.:05:22.

one in Malaysia. Apart from the odd locking up into the hairpin. No

:05:22.:05:26.

surprise. This is one of the biggest breaks of the season.

:05:26.:05:31.

Overall this track is not particularly hard on brakes, but at

:05:31.:05:35.

the end of the straight putting 6G on the breaks. They are going from

:05:35.:05:41.

something like 200 miles an hour to 44 miles an hour in 125ms. The

:05:41.:05:45.

brakes take a lot of punishment on that particular corner. Elsewhere

:05:45.:05:50.

on the track it is not so hard on the track it is not so hard

:05:50.:05:54.

brake as some of the others. Here comes Esteban Gutierrez, learning

:05:54.:05:59.

the Sir quit this weekend with a few incidents this morning. We

:05:59.:06:04.

should see some of the teams using soft tyre, not just yet, most will

:06:04.:06:08.

come out on the medium compound, the harder of the two, to start the

:06:08.:06:13.

session. We will see them making a switch. It does vary, they get

:06:13.:06:17.

going for 25 minutes or so. Then they will tend to put a set of the

:06:17.:06:22.

soft tyres on, that will give us an indicator in terms of outright

:06:22.:06:25.

speed between the different teams and competitor. After that we will

:06:25.:06:31.

see them do some race runs by which they will put more fuel in the car

:06:31.:06:37.

and do a series of laps to get an idea of how long tyres will lap

:06:38.:06:41.

under race conditions. Will they be able to go further than that and do

:06:41.:06:47.

20 laps on a set of tyres, that is the sort of information they need

:06:47.:06:51.

to be learning today. We will see that a little later on in the

:06:51.:06:54.

session. We will try to monitor the lap times and give you an idea of

:06:54.:07:00.

who is locking good at that point. On the new tyre, it is the harder,

:07:00.:07:03.

the medium compound tyre. Jenson Button about to go out to start the

:07:03.:07:08.

second practice something he. We have a few cars out already,

:07:08.:07:16.

Gutierrez, Richie Vernon, Chilton has gone out. The Daniel Ricciardo

:07:16.:07:21.

is out there, Paul di Resta is waiting for the signal to come from

:07:21.:07:25.

the full senior team to send him on his way and put behind them the

:07:25.:07:30.

rather disastrous pit stops they suffered last time out in Malaysia

:07:30.:07:33.

where they lost so much time. There is the man who leads the World

:07:33.:07:41.

Championship, Sebatian Vettel after the controversial win in Malaysia.

:07:41.:07:46.

He leads the event and by nine points over the winner of the first

:07:46.:07:49.

Grand Prix, Kimi Raikkonen. Mark Webber is currently third, Anthony

:07:49.:07:54.

Hamilton is fourth. A good couple of -- Lewisham ham is fourth, a

:07:54.:08:01.

good couple of consistent finshes for him. This is turn three, a

:08:02.:08:05.

tight left-hander, wide mid-corner. Tentative on the power, perhaps.

:08:05.:08:15.
:08:15.:08:15.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 41 seconds

:08:15.:08:57.

Let's listen as he comes along flat gradually starts to open up. This

:08:57.:09:01.

is one of the longest straights in Formula One. There is the car off

:09:01.:09:06.

in the distance, Jenson Button is closer to us, and behind him is

:09:06.:09:09.

Esteban Gutierrez. McLaren have come with quite a lot of new parts

:09:09.:09:15.

for their cars. We know that they struggle, particularly in Australia,

:09:15.:09:20.

they have made progress in Malaysia as well. But Gary, I know you have

:09:20.:09:22.

been having a bit of a look around the McLaren what have they changed

:09:22.:09:27.

on that car and what are they hoping for this weekend? They are

:09:27.:09:30.

hoping to make progress. They started in Australia very poor low.

:09:30.:09:34.

And one of the things with the car is the concept, the package of the

:09:34.:09:38.

car is quite good, as long as they haven't exploited some of the

:09:38.:09:42.

detail on it. It is about getting those things to work together. Here

:09:42.:09:51.

they have a exhaust exit, trying to make them work with the exhaust

:09:51.:09:56.

system. The high velocity of the exhaust system into the bottom of

:09:56.:10:01.

the rear brakebacks, and that creates force on the back of the

:10:01.:10:06.

car. We call that the coke bottle, with the brakes and the body of the

:10:06.:10:09.

car working together. They have those modifications had this

:10:09.:10:14.

morning. This morning Jenson ran it but Sergio didn't. He has gone out

:10:14.:10:18.

of the pits, and the engine covers are the same now, both cars up to

:10:18.:10:23.

the same spescation. They were happy this morning it was a step

:10:23.:10:26.

forward. In Malaysia they were reasonably competitive and they

:10:26.:10:30.

will try to be more competitive here while they try to regroup and

:10:30.:10:34.

get enough stuff made for the first of the European races in Barcelona.

:10:34.:10:39.

That will be their target. Jenson Button heading down the long

:10:39.:10:49.
:10:49.:11:00.

Button, just getting tyres sorted. This is likely to be a quick lap

:11:00.:11:05.

now. This is where he crosses the line. On to a flying lap. That lap

:11:05.:11:15.
:11:15.:11:34.

not particularly special. But let's goes fastest. It looked lairy on

:11:34.:11:37.

the exit of the last corn he, he held it together pretty well.

:11:37.:11:42.

Hamilton has set the pace in the early stage, he's on the harder of

:11:42.:11:52.

the two compound of tyres. Giedo van der Garde coming down on

:11:52.:11:55.

passing Romain Grosjean, and that all got a bit confusing, I don't

:11:55.:11:58.

know if he thought Grosjean would let him through or quite what was

:11:59.:12:02.

going on there. But Giedo van der Garde and Romain Grosjean getting

:12:02.:12:06.

through the incident without any problem. Just to tell you that

:12:06.:12:16.
:12:16.:12:16.

Charles Pic is out in the other Caterham now. We saw the other

:12:16.:12:26.
:12:26.:12:37.

Caterham driver, he was the slowest of the 22 drivers out there. That

:12:37.:12:43.

is Max Chilton in The Marriage Plot, stopping on -- the Marussia,

:12:43.:12:49.

stopping there trying to get out of the way, it look like a mechanical

:12:49.:12:53.

problem on Marussia at the moment. We gather that Charles Pic has been

:12:53.:13:02.

reporting a steering problem on his Caterham. Maybe it is a steering

:13:02.:13:05.

wheel problem, maybe it is not connected in. Gary what have you

:13:05.:13:15.
:13:15.:13:16.

got for us? We will try to find out in the pit lane, the steering works

:13:16.:13:23.

by the hide drollics, and the clutch. If you have a hide drollic

:13:23.:13:27.

leak the system will fail. You need to get back to the pits before you

:13:27.:13:33.

use it all. Not changing the gear means he's not using the system and

:13:33.:13:42.

shouldn't leak oil. Maybe the same has happened to Chilton. Huge

:13:42.:13:46.

amount of interest against both Red Bull and how they compare. Vettel

:13:46.:13:51.

is faster in the first sector, and Vettel in the second sector. Looks

:13:51.:14:01.
:14:01.:14:01.

as though they are evenly matched. Webber is fastest in the second

:14:02.:14:10.

sector. Working the car hard as you can see, he's over the kerb, 1.37.7,

:14:10.:14:15.

not as quick as Rosberg. Rosberg has set the pace, and Webber a

:14:15.:14:19.

fraction off that. Let's see if Vettel is quicker, he uses a lot of

:14:19.:14:23.

road himself, on to the DRS as the rear flap opens. It is not good

:14:23.:14:33.

enough. Webber has the edge over Vettel and Rosberg over Hamilton.

:14:33.:14:39.

There goes Jenson Button a fifth- fastest time. Looking at Perez

:14:39.:14:43.

followed by Grosjean, Grosjean has scored points in Formula One for

:14:43.:14:49.

the first time in his career 12 month ago here. He had done a

:14:49.:14:53.

little Formula One before that season, a partial season, last year

:14:53.:14:57.

was his first opportunity to score points. He has scored points in

:14:57.:15:07.
:15:07.:15:24.

one quick lap, this lap is looking pretty competitive as well. He's

:15:24.:15:29.

about two tenths of a second down on the first sector to what Vettel

:15:29.:15:33.

had done. Second sector down a little bit on what Webber has done.

:15:33.:15:37.

This lap is not going to be an outright improvement. Off has gone

:15:37.:15:41.

Perez, again, for the second time today, we see Perez in a gravel

:15:41.:15:45.

track. He's not having a very good time of it at the moment. I think

:15:45.:15:48.

he has managed to just about drag it out of the gravel. Rosberg, it

:15:48.:15:53.

is a better lap, that was all done in the final sector. That's very

:15:53.:15:59.

interesting. The final sector is basically the long straight down

:15:59.:16:05.

and the final hairpin and the left hander. Gary your thoughts on this,

:16:05.:16:11.

in terms of speed trap figures, it is Gutierrez who is topping the

:16:11.:16:18.

speed traps at 320kms an hour, exactly 200 miles an hour.

:16:18.:16:24.

going back to the pit. Understood, box this lap. Perez coming in, no

:16:24.:16:27.

surprise. The Mercedes set up for a pretty fast speed in a straight

:16:27.:16:31.

line, locking at those figure? they are. This is one of those

:16:31.:16:36.

circuits where to be honest that straight is so long, that it is too

:16:36.:16:40.

real straights and a mix up of the last third of the lap. It makes up

:16:40.:16:44.

a third of the lap with a hairpin in it. You have to have the car set

:16:44.:16:48.

up right for the straight line speed against the cornering speed.

:16:48.:16:53.

That is where Mercedes have got a nice compromise. You can see the

:16:53.:16:57.

quickness in the first second session but the last sector of the

:16:57.:17:01.

lap too. It is a compromise to come up with. We had a replay of Perez

:17:02.:17:07.

going off, he certainly managed to hit the wall with the back of the

:17:07.:17:11.

car, and a spin for Adrian Sutil as well. That is come down out of turn

:17:11.:17:15.

eight and nine. That looked like the same area that Perez had got

:17:15.:17:18.

off. Whether it was slippery out there, it caught them both out or

:17:18.:17:23.

they are trying a little hard at this stage in the session? We will

:17:23.:17:27.

have to find out. That was an interesting line from Lewis

:17:27.:17:32.

Hamilton, going slowly, but bouncing it over the kerb. That was

:17:32.:17:42.
:17:42.:17:58.

eye on Perez? I am, one of the things I have noticed is he has

:17:58.:18:04.

flat spots all round the tyres, but the right-hand rear tyre has gone

:18:04.:18:08.

straight through to the canvas and the left-hand one all the way

:18:08.:18:17.

through to the canvas. The back I would imagine he locked the brake

:18:17.:18:21.

on the rear entry, it is like pulling the hand brake on a normal

:18:21.:18:24.

car and the rear goes past you. It is one of those things, you haven't

:18:24.:18:29.

that many sets of tyres to throw away. Nice to see David Coulthard

:18:29.:18:34.

doing his research in the viewing gallery of Red Bull, wonder if he

:18:34.:18:37.

can sense any atmosphere that exists between the two drivers

:18:37.:18:43.

there. Let's get some news from Jenny about Max Chilton. What have

:18:43.:18:46.

Jenny about Max Chilton. What have you learned? It appears it did stop

:18:46.:18:49.

out on track, an engine kill, something to do with, they are not

:18:49.:18:53.

sure until they get the car back. Something to do with the oil system,

:18:53.:18:57.

a protective system that cut n kills the engine, leaves Max out on

:18:58.:19:01.

the track but when they get back they will do a thorough

:19:01.:19:04.

investigation and work out what has investigation and work out what has

:19:04.:19:06.

gone wrong. It is good to know it is not too

:19:06.:19:10.

serious, but the loss of track time is key. He won't be allowed back

:19:10.:19:14.

out in the session. It will hurt over the weekend, losing these kind

:19:14.:19:19.

of laps early on in the weekend that can dictate how the whole rest

:19:19.:19:24.

of your weekend goes. Gary, it is, to lose one of these sessions for

:19:24.:19:28.

any team, particularly for a young driver. It can be quite painful

:19:28.:19:32.

can't it? Every lap you do you find a new experience, you learn more

:19:32.:19:36.

about the car and the track and how it all works together. Just going

:19:36.:19:40.

to that oil kill that Jenny was talking about. It is a system on

:19:40.:19:44.

the car where you are measuring the oil pressure, if the oil pressure

:19:44.:19:48.

drops below a certain amount it will switch the engine off. You use

:19:48.:19:55.

that during practice. You usually disarm it during the race, because

:19:55.:19:59.

sensors can also fail. You don't want to stop on a race because of

:19:59.:20:03.

that failure. You will take that out of the system for the race. For

:20:03.:20:13.
:20:13.:20:16.

practice it is good to see it ago, Lewis Hamilton is fastest in

:20:16.:20:21.

the first sector than Rosberg was. Not as quick in the second sector.

:20:21.:20:25.

He has lost nearly three tenths of a second to Rosberg in the second

:20:26.:20:30.

sector. Now he's on to the long straight where he saw the Mercedes

:20:30.:20:40.
:20:40.:21:04.

slower, we know how well Rosberg goes around the track Giedo van der

:21:04.:21:07.

Garde has had a spin there, went over the grass bit on the outside.

:21:07.:21:12.

Back in, comes out of him, such a fast approach that corner. They go

:21:12.:21:21.

in it seems almost flat out, this didn't have the grip to respond to

:21:21.:21:30.

that. He has continued and no other major fall-out from that. Gary, I'm

:21:30.:21:34.

sure you remember last year in qualifying, when we were covering

:21:34.:21:41.

it and the two Mercedes were looking great, there was that lap

:21:41.:21:46.

put in early on for Nico, Schumacher asked what lap time he

:21:46.:21:51.

did, and he said that was good, that gave us an indication of how

:21:52.:21:57.

well he was driving. It was seven tenths of a second from Schumacher.

:21:57.:22:04.

He had done a lap he thought was pretty megaand Nico was seven

:22:04.:22:10.

tenths quicker, it got him scratching the head. Ever driver as

:22:10.:22:18.

-- has a track that suits the way he drives. And this is Nico's, he

:22:18.:22:22.

has led all three years previously for Mercedes, he has led the race

:22:22.:22:27.

at some point in time at this track. It is just a track that gels with

:22:27.:22:34.

him. Have a look at the data on the box,

:22:34.:22:40.

box, box. We will look at that. They are going for the option tyre,

:22:40.:22:46.

the soft tyre will be put on the car soon. Everyone on their medium

:22:46.:22:56.
:22:56.:23:09.

except Richie Vernon -- Pontus is Max Chilton there, a bit

:23:09.:23:13.

frustrating for him to sit out the whole rest of the session without

:23:13.:23:17.

getting any meaningful laps in. He hadn't completed a flying lap at

:23:17.:23:21.

all. He had done a couple of installation laps. You are at

:23:21.:23:25.

McLaren, what is going on there Gary? Keeping an eye on them,

:23:25.:23:31.

Jenson Button his car happy. They have changed the rear anti-roll bar

:23:31.:23:39.

in his car, that stops the car falling around corners. If you put

:23:39.:23:44.

a hard one there is less traction and softer a bit more oversteer but

:23:44.:23:50.

more traction. I can't see if it is bigger or smaller one. Sergio Perez

:23:50.:23:55.

when he came in the brakes themselves are full of stones, the

:23:55.:23:58.

brake nuts on these things are really fairly complicate. They have

:23:59.:24:03.

to come off to get the stones out. It such a small clearance inside

:24:03.:24:07.

there, it is very easy for a stone to get wedged and work its way and

:24:07.:24:11.

cut the rim in two and you get a deflating tyre. That is the last

:24:11.:24:15.

thing needs right now. It looked as what I said about the car locking

:24:15.:24:20.

up the rear is true. He was telling the engineer the car snapped side

:24:20.:24:24.

ways on him. If the car is in the stands and they are trying to fix

:24:25.:24:34.
:24:35.:24:37.

older than Rosberg. Whatever Hamilton's just found he's found a

:24:37.:24:40.

decent chunk of time there, whether it was in driving style or simply

:24:41.:24:46.

making a change to the car. But it has worked. He has now got right in

:24:46.:24:55.

to second place just behind Rosberg. This is Williams, the news came

:24:55.:25:01.

between Malaysia and this race that Claire Williams is deputy team

:25:01.:25:06.

principal. She is talking to Jenny. Congratulations, dep toe team

:25:06.:25:12.

principal, how does it feel to have -- deputy team principal, how does

:25:12.:25:15.

it feel to have stepped up? excited about the challenge ahead

:25:15.:25:19.

and I'm ready for it. We will see how it goes.S This is the first

:25:19.:25:24.

time as we hear Pastor's car in the background, this is the first time

:25:24.:25:26.

you are here taking charge of things, because your father doesn't

:25:27.:25:31.

come to the race in China. What have you had to do, what is your

:25:31.:25:35.

role this weekentend? I'm stepping back, I'm not technical, that is

:25:35.:25:40.

not my main remit in this role. Obviously I have an oversight. I'm

:25:40.:25:46.

involved. But my confidence in the technical director for that sieftd

:25:46.:25:51.

team. That is how we are structured at Williams. My primary focus is

:25:51.:25:55.

commercial. That will be my main responsibility. I attend debriefs,

:25:55.:26:04.

I always have, much more so I know what is going on. It is interesting.

:26:04.:26:10.

Talking about the technical side of things, we no it has been a

:26:10.:26:20.
:26:20.:26:26.

desappointing start, Pastor hasn't finished a race and bots bot bots

:26:26.:26:35.

hasn't -- bot Bottas hasn't done well. We have various aerodynamic

:26:35.:26:40.

upgrades, we have run different tests and on P2 we have gone for

:26:40.:26:45.

the best package and put it on both the cars. We are looking at those

:26:45.:26:51.

in readiness for tomorrow. It must be hard to control Valtteri, the

:26:51.:26:55.

new driver's emotion, he wants to come in and do well but the car is

:26:55.:27:05.
:27:05.:27:15.

not letting him. Valt valt is calm, cool Valtteri is calm and fool a

:27:15.:27:25.
:27:25.:27:25.

typical Finn, Vijay Mallya will finish the race, he's not a an

:27:25.:27:29.

inexperienced driver, he will finish this weekend. Thank you for

:27:29.:27:32.

talking to us. Mark Webber has now put on the soft tyre, and immediate

:27:32.:27:36.

low is up on the splits. No surprise there. He has taken about

:27:36.:27:41.

four tenths out of the first split time. Just want to make a note that

:27:41.:27:45.

Frenando Alonso, between the Mercedes and The Red House on the

:27:45.:27:51.

initial tyre run, the medium compound tyre, that is a good

:27:51.:27:55.

effort by Ferrari, looking more confident in the abilities of the

:27:55.:27:59.

car. They are in the hunt pace-wise, if you look at how they put in a

:27:59.:28:04.

decent lap this morning already. Webber here already up again on the

:28:04.:28:06.

second split. Beating anybody else's time into that second split.

:28:06.:28:11.

Now the third split, of course, as we know, is mainly about a straight

:28:11.:28:16.

line. So it is unlikely the soft tyres will have such a big effect

:28:16.:28:20.

on the sector time, they will help as he gets on the brakes and gets

:28:20.:28:27.

the power down out of the hairpin. Let's just see how clean this is.

:28:27.:28:32.

Looking very neat and tidy Mark Webber. Last year he passed Vettel

:28:32.:28:35.

during the race, no team orders were brought into case that

:28:35.:28:45.
:28:45.:29:03.

on those tyres than the medium compound tyre. Gary I know you are

:29:03.:29:11.

locking around pit lane be that is a big jump, Webber going from 1.37

:29:11.:29:16.

to 1.37? That may be fuel lower. We are expecting half a second to

:29:16.:29:19.

eight tenths of a second between the medium and soft tyre in the lap

:29:19.:29:24.

time. I would imagine he has taken fuel out to see what it will be

:29:24.:29:29.

like in qualifying. I'm sure it is not low fuel but lower fuel. The

:29:29.:29:33.

Mercedes garage, looking at Lewis Hamilton after a few laps, he's sat

:29:33.:29:37.

in the car. They are fiddling around with the front brake. They

:29:37.:29:41.

have got one front brake that Lewis Hamilton's right-hand brake,

:29:42.:29:48.

without looking at it has holes in the top of it to let heat out of it,

:29:48.:29:52.

but the right-hand break doesn't have that. That is because the tyre

:29:52.:29:57.

temperatures and everything isn't the same. The air coming out of the

:29:57.:30:05.

brakes is 700-800 degrees, it can help warm the tyre up very quickly.

:30:05.:30:10.

You need both front tyres up to the right temperature quickly. He's

:30:10.:30:15.

going out on the soft tyre next. It will be interesting to see what the

:30:15.:30:20.

two Mercedes tyres can do with it. The softerer the tyre more traction

:30:20.:30:24.

you get. We have to wait and see that all the cars can make the best

:30:24.:30:32.

use out of the softer tyre. Here is Esteban Gutierrez in the

:30:32.:30:42.
:30:42.:30:43.

Sauber, he is about to complete a lap. That is his best lap so far.

:30:43.:30:47.

It put him 16th. He is on the medium compound. The white wall

:30:47.:30:53.

tyre. He's not doing his soft tyre run just yet. Still lock up on the

:30:53.:30:56.

inside front. Still looking a little bit scrappy. We will see

:30:56.:31:06.

what happens when he puts the soft tyre on. Button still on the medium

:31:06.:31:11.

tyre. McLaren working through a big programme. Sam Michaels saying they

:31:11.:31:16.

had only got through 20-40% of the programme they have lined up today

:31:16.:31:19.

through the practice session. There is an awful lot of work to do and

:31:19.:31:23.

huge amount of number crunching. Driver feedback plays the part, but

:31:23.:31:27.

at the end of the day all their decisions are based on data,

:31:27.:31:30.

certainly when they have time, as they have through a Friday and

:31:30.:31:34.

Saturday and deciding how to set the cars up. They use data to make

:31:34.:31:38.

the changes, perhaps in qualifying when it needs a final tweak, they

:31:38.:31:41.

will be listening to the driver for a little change to the car to bring

:31:41.:31:47.

them that little extra piece of performance. Get in touch on

:31:47.:31:54.

Jenson Button as he gets the back end of the McLaren collide sliding

:31:59.:32:09.
:32:09.:32:36.

Chinese Grand Prix. A typical Jenson drive, he judged to

:32:36.:32:40.

perfection what tyre to be on at the right time. He came under

:32:40.:32:44.

pressure from Lewis Hamilton, but Button had it all wrapped up. They

:32:45.:32:51.

were able to taken a extremely God 1-2 finish. The last time there

:32:51.:32:55.

were two McLaren drivers on the pod come was last year, when Jenson

:32:55.:33:05.
:33:05.:33:26.

Button finished second, and Lewis yesterday and the car isn't great,

:33:26.:33:30.

is it the lack of downforce as a droifr or is it spooky to drive?

:33:30.:33:33.

says the balance changes all the time during the race. You don't

:33:33.:33:36.

have one thing or another, the balance of the car is constantly

:33:36.:33:46.
:33:46.:33:46.

changing. As a driver trying to get around corners and judge the speeds,

:33:46.:33:51.

and it is changing all the time, it make their life very difficult.

:33:51.:33:59.

This car looks a lot more stable. Flat out top speed, an adjustment

:33:59.:34:02.

to the brake balance for Nico Rosberg as we come towards the

:34:02.:34:12.
:34:12.:34:33.

the brake, the tyre temperatures are good. Still the same problem as

:34:33.:34:42.

the last run, but worse at high- speed. Rosberg there going fastest,

:34:42.:34:46.

1.35.8, better than Schumacher managed in free practice. We will

:34:47.:34:56.
:34:57.:34:57.

see times get quicker than that into practice three and qualifying.

:34:57.:35:01.

Nico Hulkenberg in the Sauber there. Teams have their third drivers in

:35:01.:35:10.

attendance often in the Grand Prixs, we saw the Caterham driver. The

:35:10.:35:18.

young American driver also linked with the team is Alexandra Rossi. I

:35:18.:35:23.

understand you are disappointed you are not in the car but Monterey all

:35:23.:35:30.

is when you will take to trb Montreal is where you will be?

:35:30.:35:35.

disappointed not to be driving, to misout this weekend was

:35:35.:35:38.

disappointing, but having the Chinese driver makes sense. I want

:35:38.:35:43.

to be driving in Austin so I relate to that. Montereyal will be the

:35:43.:35:46.

next one, North America, we will have to put it all together and

:35:46.:35:56.
:35:56.:35:57.

enjoy as much as we can. What are Caterham saying about the car?

:35:57.:36:00.

weren't expecting the gap to be that big, half a second. We are

:36:00.:36:08.

doing the best we can. We have brought forward the changes from

:36:08.:36:12.

Barcelona to Bahrain, so the race drivers can have as much time in

:36:12.:36:16.

the new car. We will see what happens. We have high hopes and

:36:16.:36:21.

fingers crossed we will be able to jump back in front of Marussia.

:36:21.:36:26.

Everyone asks about Barcelona, that seems to be the usual place, it is

:36:26.:36:30.

logistics and people having time to upgrade, but also the fact it is so

:36:30.:36:32.

much closer to Britain. But Caterham reacting to the problems

:36:32.:36:36.

that you are facing, so hopefully next time out you can be a little

:36:36.:36:40.

bit more competitive? We made a decision at the end of last year

:36:40.:36:48.

and beginning this of this year to focus on the 2014 car. Expected the

:36:48.:36:53.

2012 car would carry over to 2013 and we would stay in the position

:36:53.:36:58.

with Marussia. The fact it hasn't happened has changed the game plan.

:36:58.:37:02.

We were forced to bring more upgrades than we thought and sooner.

:37:02.:37:06.

It is not bad thing to have somebody rushing you, it makes us

:37:06.:37:10.

work harder. At the end of the year we need to make sure we are back in

:37:10.:37:14.

front and on the note we did in 2012. You mentioned Texas, having

:37:14.:37:19.

the Grand Prix back in America and having you trying to drive the car,

:37:19.:37:24.

how important is that combination for make and F1 to succeed there?

:37:24.:37:28.

It is massively important. Austin went very well last year, not only

:37:28.:37:33.

did F1 receive it well but the fans received it well. At the same time

:37:33.:37:36.

the Americans want their own countrymen in it. To be involved in

:37:36.:37:41.

the weekend in some small way is better than nothing. At least to

:37:41.:37:45.

the next step in 2014 of actually to be racing. We will see what we

:37:45.:37:49.

can do. For sure I'm counting the days for that to happen. Thank you

:37:49.:37:53.

very much for talking to us. At six foot two, the tallest man in the

:37:53.:38:03.
:38:03.:38:12.

paddock at the moment. and a bit more in the final sector.

:38:12.:38:18.

There was traffic which didn't help his cause. Hulkenberg who is he

:38:18.:38:21.

signalling to, it might have been the other Mercedes. The bloody

:38:21.:38:31.
:38:31.:38:32.

Mercedes didn't get out of the way. Copy Nicosia. He's --Copy Nico.

:38:32.:38:38.

He's complaining about both of the Mercedes who didn't get out of the

:38:38.:38:42.

way. We were talking about respect for drivers and Gary in that

:38:42.:38:46.

particular understand stance it looked like Hulkenberg did get

:38:46.:38:50.

caught up, that is down to and awareness from drivers and teams?

:38:50.:38:54.

They have all got a lap tracker. All the teams in the pit lane here,

:38:54.:38:58.

they have this little circuit that shows where all the cars are on the

:38:58.:39:02.

track. In reality these things shouldn't be happening. They should

:39:02.:39:06.

advise their driver how to get out of the traffic, and the other teams

:39:06.:39:09.

advising the drivers blocking someone to get out of the way

:39:09.:39:15.

quicker. It will happen the other way round some time. What do you

:39:15.:39:18.

want everybody playing hard ball blocking each other and the FIA

:39:18.:39:23.

will have to come down on them. The teams and drivers have to

:39:23.:39:26.

discipline themselves to make sure everybody has the best opportunity.

:39:26.:39:31.

While you are on, we have a question from a young collateral

:39:31.:39:37.

fan a question for Gary, is there an aerodynamic gain on the gap on

:39:37.:39:43.

the nose? He's talking about the gap where the nose cone is where

:39:43.:39:46.

the driver's knee would be? A bit further forward. What happens there,

:39:46.:39:51.

last year we had the step nose, and Sauber had a duct coming through

:39:51.:39:55.

from the underneath of the nose to the stop of the nose. And this year

:39:55.:39:59.

they have still got the step nose but they have sides on it, from the

:39:59.:40:03.

side it doesn't look so bad, but we have a ramp in the centre section.

:40:03.:40:08.

When the air is being ramped over the top of the chassis, it creates

:40:08.:40:12.

an airflow behind it. That airflow gets sucked through the gap from

:40:12.:40:16.

underneath the nose. It is a mechanism for trying to pull more

:40:16.:40:19.

air through the front wing by draging it through the front wing,

:40:19.:40:23.

through this hole in the nose and over the top of the chassis. So it

:40:23.:40:27.

would be a very, very small change to be honest. I would say if you

:40:27.:40:32.

were going to try to look at it in a wind tunnel. Farce what the

:40:32.:40:35.

performance game would be, you would never see it disappear into

:40:35.:40:39.

three decimal points. But in theory it should give a little bit. Sauber

:40:39.:40:42.

have gone for it. They are not the only team. Other people have look

:40:42.:40:46.

at it a little bit. It is just one of those little things that you

:40:46.:40:52.

design into the car to begin with, and leave it there. It should be

:40:52.:40:55.

better, yes. A couple of other tweets I will run

:40:55.:41:02.

through. "will the tensions caused by Red Bull and Mercedes orders

:41:02.:41:07.

last time out make the other teams cautious in using them too"? That

:41:07.:41:11.

could be the case. Most teams are cautious about using team orders,

:41:11.:41:14.

particularly at this stage of the season. There is a feeling up and

:41:14.:41:17.

down the paddock, early point in the season at which to use team

:41:18.:41:21.

orders, nobody knows the full inside story except Red Bull and

:41:21.:41:27.

Mercedes. They were dealing with what they had to cope with. Another

:41:27.:41:35.

message in, a McLaren fan he saying, "I have to say I'm worried about

:41:35.:41:39.

the pace of the Mercedes, guess Lewis is feeling a little smug

:41:39.:41:42.

right now". He made the change to Mercedes, a lot of people thought

:41:42.:41:45.

he was making a mistake, but looking at the pace of the Mercedes

:41:45.:41:52.

it is not looking like a bad choice. And another comment" Perez isn't

:41:52.:41:57.

ready for the McLaren seat, a lot of pressure for him". I don't think

:41:57.:42:01.

so, he has made mistakes but the can isn't where they want it to be

:42:01.:42:05.

yet. Perez is still finding his feet a little bit. He should be on

:42:05.:42:09.

form once the war is a little better. Earlier on in the session

:42:09.:42:14.

we saw Max Chilton pulling to a stop sadly in his Marussia. We find

:42:14.:42:16.

stop sadly in his Marussia. We find out more now.

:42:16.:42:20.

Disappointment for you, the kill system overrode anything you could

:42:20.:42:24.

do personally, just talk us through what happened? I was just starting

:42:24.:42:30.

my first real pushing lap on the newer primes and I just went into

:42:30.:42:35.

turn one and lost all power. It was a safety thing, it cut out off

:42:35.:42:39.

before the engine gave way. That is wait it goes sometimes. It is

:42:39.:42:42.

unfortunate, because this morning the session went really well. I

:42:42.:42:51.

have never been here. Me and Jules match each other's paces and beat

:42:51.:42:55.

the Caterham, but it is hard when things like that set you back a bit.

:42:55.:42:59.

We have seen the garage back in the garage, a time for the engineers to

:42:59.:43:03.

look at it. Obviously for you, this is the first time in this circuit,

:43:03.:43:07.

it is a technical track, you wanted the time out there to learn it?

:43:07.:43:11.

got out there this morning and learned it for the first time, my

:43:11.:43:16.

pace was good compared to Jules, we matched each other, I haven't been

:43:16.:43:19.

here before. Obviously this is the session where you really start

:43:19.:43:22.

trying things. It is unfortunate. We might manage to get back out,

:43:22.:43:28.

you never know. Can you take any comfort from the fact that he's out

:43:28.:43:31.

there at the moment and running an 11? It is really promising, a

:43:31.:43:35.

really good time. Hopefully I can get out and have a go. More

:43:35.:43:38.

upgrades on the way for you, the same as everybody else, each race

:43:38.:43:42.

bringing Mork these ones are really working? They are really working,

:43:42.:43:47.

you need updates often and as much as you can. We are getting that so

:43:47.:43:55.

far. It is giving us a nice gap to Caterham. I will let you go back to

:43:56.:43:59.

the engineers. Max Chilton losing valuable time, his team-mate has

:43:59.:44:07.

gone for the soft tyre run, has done a good job. Jules Bianchi is

:44:07.:44:12.

11th in the standings, for Marussia that is very good. Not everyone is

:44:12.:44:20.

on soft tyres. He has done a 1.38.7, reasonable, looking at the next

:44:20.:44:28.

soft runner time 1.38.2, only half a second off Hulkenberg's time in

:44:28.:44:33.

the software in the Marussia versus Hulkenberg in the Sauber. It shows

:44:33.:44:37.

you how well Marussia are doing this year. We will see if they can

:44:37.:44:41.

keep it up. The other side of the coin for Mallya. He has been

:44:41.:44:43.

struggling with the Williams all struggling with the Williams all

:44:43.:44:46.

season long. One of the only drivers not to have managed to

:44:46.:44:53.

finish a race so far this year. Two DNFs in the races in Melbourne and

:44:53.:44:56.

Malaysia. It is proving a bit difficult. Obviously still

:44:56.:45:00.

struggling at the moment with this car to get it balmed the way he

:45:00.:45:10.
:45:10.:45:17.

the grip to respond how he wants. Williams are in good shape, last

:45:17.:45:22.

year he had he they had two cars in the point on different tyre

:45:22.:45:31.

strategies. It was one of the best races of the years. Susie Wolff,

:45:31.:45:35.

the third driver at Williams, looking forward to getting a chance

:45:35.:45:41.

at one of the young driver tests to drive the Williams herself and give

:45:41.:45:45.

it a proper go in race circuit conditions. To see how she goes

:45:45.:45:50.

with that. Then maybe if that goes well, we may well end up seeing her

:45:50.:45:53.

in one of these free practice something hes maybe later this year

:45:53.:45:57.

or next year. We will have to wait and see. She knows there is still

:45:57.:46:01.

plenty to be done by the team to get the car right. I think she's

:46:01.:46:03.

probably happy to wait at the moment for her opportunity to drive

:46:04.:46:09.

it, until they have got it dialed in a little better. This is Massa

:46:09.:46:19.
:46:19.:46:54.

Alonso. If he manages in China as a fifth time, that is something that

:46:54.:46:58.

has never happened to Alonso before. To be outqualified by a team-mate

:46:58.:47:02.

five-times in a row. That is what Massa has on offer for him this

:47:02.:47:12.
:47:12.:47:40.

weekend. Nice little incentive. He the Sauber or the McLaren, but this

:47:41.:47:45.

is still a good lap from Massa, has he done enough to go ahead of the

:47:45.:47:52.

Mercedes, he has! Great lap from Massa. Remember fuel loads will

:47:52.:47:55.

vary between the different cars. It is to his advantage that he has

:47:55.:47:59.

done this run a little later than Rosberg. The track is still

:47:59.:48:03.

cleaning up. But none the less, Gary let's get reaction from you. I

:48:03.:48:08.

think that lap time from Massa shows Ferrari should be in good

:48:09.:48:12.

shape. Fuel loadss, yes, you mentioned, it was aed goo lap. We

:48:12.:48:18.

can only compare it to last year, - - it was a good lap we can only

:48:18.:48:23.

compare it to last year. That long straight hurt the engine a bit. You

:48:23.:48:27.

get good tyre performance but you lose straight line speed. As long

:48:27.:48:30.

as you are going faster than last year, everybody is moving forward.

:48:30.:48:35.

Just watching Alonso here. He's just put the softer tyre on his car.

:48:35.:48:40.

Obviously he's pretty happy with it. He has a different front end on the

:48:40.:48:46.

car. You can see outside the front wing end pit there is two little

:48:46.:48:49.

intake ducts, en mass mass's car there is only one. Slight small

:48:50.:48:53.

developments. This area in the front wing in front of the front

:48:53.:48:57.

tyre is critical to when you steer the car. When you turn the steering

:48:57.:49:02.

wheel you open up the gap behind the wing and get different airflow

:49:02.:49:07.

there, it is easy to ask the front wing to do too much and stall the

:49:07.:49:10.

downforce. These little slots on the wing and the end plates, they

:49:10.:49:14.

are all to get consistency as the driver applies steering lock, puts

:49:15.:49:19.

it on or off the car. Different combination of those Ferraris at

:49:19.:49:23.

the moment, I'm sure they will hone in to one of them tomorrow. Friday

:49:23.:49:27.

is often used of back-to-back testing of different components on

:49:27.:49:31.

the cars. It is like low they will end up with the same, whatever

:49:31.:49:37.

works best. Speed trap figures are on the graphic.

:49:37.:49:41.

Hulkenberg, the other Sauber, the two Mercedes, then the two Ferraris,

:49:41.:49:45.

it often goes like this in team order. Because the two cars are

:49:45.:49:50.

pretty much identical or should be. Vettel in 14th place, Webber in

:49:50.:49:55.

17th. No surprise in that, that has been standard issue with Red Bull

:49:55.:50:00.

over their championship-winning seasons, they don't look for

:50:00.:50:04.

straight line speed. They tend to go for the more downforce side of

:50:04.:50:08.

the downforce drag compromise. They might carry a little more drag, but

:50:08.:50:15.

they will have a bit more downforce. They always like to have that. Some

:50:15.:50:20.

tweets, thank you very much. "is the McLaren looking for competitive,

:50:20.:50:26.

is Jenson going to be a contender this weekend"? Just looking at the

:50:26.:50:30.

times so far. We are waiting for the run on the soft tyre, there is

:50:30.:50:33.

confidence that they are moving forward, but it going to be enough

:50:33.:50:36.

for them to really challenge up front? That will be guess work from

:50:36.:50:40.

all our points of view. We will have to wait and see what happens

:50:40.:50:47.

in qualifying tomorrow. Another tweet "how many spares of new front

:50:47.:50:51.

wings has McLaren brought this weekend, serg geohas damaged one

:50:51.:50:57.

with the impressive spin"? We were told by Sam Michael that they had a

:50:58.:51:01.

spare, the old style front wing was on the car at the time. It wasn't

:51:01.:51:04.

the new front wing. They are not at all concerned about that. They are

:51:04.:51:12.

not at all worried. Another one know, "new news when the passive

:51:12.:51:17.

front wing device will be used"? Gary, worth blinging you on, we

:51:17.:51:21.

wondered -- bringing you on here, we wondered if we would see the

:51:21.:51:25.

called passive drag reduction on the cars this weekend, it would be

:51:25.:51:29.

track where it would be useful, no evidence so far? Not yet. As you

:51:29.:51:34.

say, this track suits them w that big long straight, the fastest

:51:34.:51:44.
:51:44.:51:44.

corner here. There is a reasonable gap between the as ifest gap -- as

:51:44.:51:48.

the fastest gap, but I think it is very difficult to make the system

:51:48.:51:51.

work, it will take so much set-up time during practice you won't get

:51:51.:51:56.

the rest of the car right. I'm sure most people will try to focus on

:51:56.:52:00.

getting the rest of the car set up right to make the tyres work better

:52:00.:52:05.

and more consistently. We don't see the DRS system until we hit some of

:52:05.:52:10.

the tracks in up I don't. Just because it is so much agravation to

:52:10.:52:13.

take on for these fly away races. Jenson Button just congression the

:52:13.:52:23.
:52:23.:52:34.

line. He has gone fourth on the Susie, you will give us a tour?

:52:34.:52:39.

I have been invited into the McLaren garage, we're not normally

:52:39.:52:43.

allowed. Here are all the radios, there is Jenson's radio, everything

:52:43.:52:46.

nicely marked there. If you go around the corner, this is where

:52:46.:52:50.

they take their VIPs, to see exactly what is going on in the

:52:50.:52:54.

garage. So if we just wander through here. You will get a sense,

:52:54.:52:59.

thank you Sylvia, who set it up for us. This is race watch.

:52:59.:53:05.

Shut this so it is quiet. If you look ahead, you can see the island,

:53:05.:53:10.

and that's what McLaren have introduced into the pit garage, on

:53:10.:53:14.

the right is Sergio's car, and on the left is Jenson Button. I can't

:53:14.:53:20.

have too much of a squint in here, I can have a quick chat with Kevin,

:53:20.:53:27.

a great weekend for you in Monza, you are driving in World Series

:53:27.:53:32.

Renault. You had a terrific start to the season? It was not too bad.

:53:32.:53:38.

We had two second places, both races second place. A good solid

:53:38.:53:42.

start to the year. Tell us what you are doing this weekend? I'm third

:53:42.:53:48.

driver this weekend. So I'm really just here to be ready if anything

:53:48.:53:54.

happens to one of the drivers. But also just to learn and to see how

:53:54.:53:57.

everything works a bit better, it is nice, a good opportunity.

:53:57.:54:03.

Presumably you want to follow in your dad's footsteps? I'm here to

:54:03.:54:08.

learn and to learn everything I can and to follow the weekend and see

:54:08.:54:16.

how the team works, and then to hopefully it is a step in the right

:54:16.:54:22.

direction. We are seeing Sergio going off there, you are sitting in

:54:22.:54:27.

on any of the meetings? What are you taking away from the weekend,

:54:27.:54:30.

on the driver briefings or any of the meetings are you sitting in?

:54:30.:54:34.

I'm with all the briefings. I can follow everything that's happening

:54:34.:54:38.

in the weekend. Because I need to be ready if anything happens. So I

:54:38.:54:45.

need to follow everything that's going on. You are in the McLaren

:54:45.:54:49.

Young Drivers' Programme, what do you have to do with that. Do you

:54:49.:54:55.

get to be in the team? The Young Driver Programme is basically

:54:55.:55:00.

support in all areas, guidance in my career, and fitness training,

:55:00.:55:06.

and simulator, and support in every area. And Jenson has come back in

:55:06.:55:09.

just over there. Do you get on with the I gos, do you get much chance

:55:09.:55:14.

to speak to them? Obviously they are very busy. They are nice chaps

:55:14.:55:20.

both guys are really good guys. So it is good. Obviously Jenson is the

:55:20.:55:24.

most experienced driver in the paddock, does he say anything that

:55:24.:55:34.
:55:34.:55:35.

can help you? Jenson is a nice guy, great experience and good for

:55:35.:55:42.

McLaren. When is your next race?In two weeks at Motorland. Let me go

:55:42.:55:46.

outside, we will have a closer look if we can, if there is not too much

:55:46.:55:50.

happening on track. Where can I go, I don't want to be naughty too

:55:50.:55:54.

early in the season. There we go. There is Jenson's car, this is

:55:54.:55:58.

pretty much as close as we have ever been in any of these sessions

:55:59.:56:05.

n all its glory. He will be going out again as soon as they have

:56:05.:56:11.

changed all their settings. Thank you very much, great to have

:56:11.:56:18.

that access. And good to hear from Kevin Magnusson as well, the 20-

:56:18.:56:22.

year-old son of Yan, a former Grand year-old son of Yan, a former Grand

:56:22.:56:26.

Prix driver himself. He drove a one-off race for McLaren back in

:56:27.:56:36.
:56:37.:56:38.

1995, and drove for the Stewart's team in 1998.

:56:38.:56:44.

Let me tell you Raikkonen has gone up there in The Lotus Eaters. The

:56:44.:56:54.
:56:54.:57:08.

This is Sergio Perez, Gary talk to us more about the tyres here?

:57:08.:57:12.

will been looking at Felipe Massa's tyres when he came in and Jenson

:57:12.:57:20.

Button, they have done a run on the softer tyre. Massa's tyres looking

:57:20.:57:26.

good, a little trace of graining on them, nothing too desperate. On

:57:26.:57:30.

Jenson's tyre the front tire more abused than the Ferrari front tyre.

:57:30.:57:34.

Still a problem for McLaren getting the best out of the tyres.

:57:34.:57:39.

Especially when you go for the softer tyre. As I said earlier,

:57:39.:57:43.

softer tyres give you more rear grip. If you have a car that

:57:43.:57:50.

understeers, which the McLaren does. It understeers that bit more. It

:57:50.:57:55.

makes front tyre grainy. Sergio Perez about to complete his lap.

:57:55.:57:58.

Let's watch him through the final corner. Really on the kerb, on the

:57:58.:58:04.

exit of the corner, over the line he goes.

:58:04.:58:11.

11th quickest. Button sixth, Perez 1th on a 1.36.90. He back it is off

:58:11.:58:21.
:58:21.:58:32.

from the engine revs. This is have to keep an eye on that, that

:58:32.:58:38.

can mark up the tyres a lot. A couple of tweets coming in. "do you

:58:38.:58:45.

think there has been a change in Grosjean compared to last year, no

:58:45.:58:48.

incidents yet"? I think Grosjean has matured and he's very

:58:49.:58:53.

determined to show he's worthy of his place in Formula One, he scored

:58:53.:58:56.

points in the two opening Grand Prixs and certainly is building on

:58:56.:59:00.

what he has done so far. He now needs to perhaps show that pace we

:59:00.:59:04.

saw in flashes last year. We saw him qualify on the front row, we

:59:05.:59:10.

saw him get podium finshes, that is what Lotus would like to see again.

:59:10.:59:17.

Charles Pic has gone across the line. We see the GP2 champion last

:59:17.:59:21.

year there. Now involved with Lotus himself. Got a very brief chance in

:59:21.:59:25.

the car in winter testing when Kimi Raikkonen was ill one day before

:59:25.:59:28.

they could get Romain Grosjean back in the car. He got his little

:59:28.:59:33.

opportunity. I think he did a good job for the team. They were happy

:59:33.:59:38.

with his performance. Another comment, "do you if he know if the

:59:39.:59:43.

track was altered at the place where Mark Webber did his wheelie

:59:43.:59:47.

from last year's race"? That was one of the images of Mark Webber,

:59:47.:59:52.

just out of this doorner he bounced over the corner on -- corner, he

:59:52.:59:56.

bounced over it and the car went up high and came back down again.

:59:56.:00:00.

There has been a report on the FIA race preview that the top and back

:00:00.:00:09.

edge of all-raceing kerbs have been rounded and shunted to stop tyre

:00:09.:00:19.
:00:19.:00:20.

damage but not to prevent flap. You are matching Nico lap for lap.

:00:20.:00:23.

Lewis Hamilton will be happy hearing that. Bottas crosses the

:00:23.:00:28.

line on the medium compound tyre, most drivers are now concentrating

:00:28.:00:32.

on the race run. This is where we will be looking at the lap times

:00:32.:00:36.

that he come through. But they will be much slower. Instead of looking

:00:36.:00:46.
:00:46.:00:46.

at fast lap, the fastest we have seen so far, a 13 --.35.3 we will

:00:46.:00:51.

be looking at laps in the 1.40s. That is the sort of area they will

:00:51.:00:57.

be looking at, maybe quicker in the low 1.40s. That will be their race

:00:57.:01:01.

pace, that will be on a relatively heavy tank of fuel. Not necessarily

:01:01.:01:07.

completely to the brim. But a heavy tank of fuel for a number of laps,

:01:07.:01:11.

maybe 10-12, they will be studying then how the lap times differ over

:01:11.:01:16.

the 12 laps how quickly the tyres go off, and how the balance of the

:01:16.:01:19.

car changes and all that kind of thing. That is what the teams will

:01:19.:01:29.
:01:29.:01:30.

be looking for on the race run. Bianchi is the young Frenchman who

:01:30.:01:35.

has impressed so many people so far this year. Already he has been

:01:35.:01:38.

pushed down the order again now. Down in 19th place. But still a

:01:38.:01:43.

good lap earlier on. We were talking about Lotus, Kimi Raikkonen

:01:43.:01:50.

is currently second-fastest, Grosjean gros is 12th, they had a

:01:51.:01:55.

victory in the constructors championship. We're with the boss,

:01:55.:02:00.

Eric Boullier. How happy are you with the car this season, it seems

:02:00.:02:05.

the car and drivers this season are at a happy pace? Obviously we had a

:02:05.:02:11.

good start to the season. A little bit more tricky in Malaysia, we are

:02:11.:02:18.

back on track here. We have all the conditions for the car to work well.

:02:18.:02:27.

We are just here to surprisingly see a difference in the lap on

:02:27.:02:31.

prime. Talk us through the changes, Romain Grosjean was disappointed to

:02:31.:02:35.

misout on the upgrades last time out in Malaysia, this time he has

:02:35.:02:41.

that new exhaust, it seems to be working really well? Yes every

:02:41.:02:46.

driver it disappointed when you can't get the same upgrade as your

:02:46.:02:50.

team-mate. But you understand the situations, sometimes it is a

:02:50.:02:53.

logistic issue. And this is part of racing all over the world. He's

:02:54.:02:59.

happy now he has the same car, back to normal. I have to talk to you

:02:59.:03:03.

about team-mate, in the middle of the week we heard about you talking

:03:03.:03:07.

about the situation in Red Bull with Sebatian Vettel and Mark

:03:07.:03:10.

Webber, battling. You were quoted as saying you thought if somebody

:03:10.:03:13.

went against what the boss said then they should pay the

:03:13.:03:23.
:03:23.:03:23.

consequences in any line of work? Some of my quotes have been

:03:23.:03:29.

transformed or changed, it is true for me a driver, it is not a normal

:03:29.:03:34.

employier of a company, but he's a raceer and competitor, it is a

:03:34.:03:42.

different context. But there is a respect for the 500, 600 people

:03:42.:03:47.

working behind the scenes. And that should not happen. Tell me though,

:03:47.:03:54.

is there benefit for you to see Red Bull warring, that leaves a gap for

:03:54.:04:02.

Lotus surely. It is incredibly loud, Romain Grosjean is revving up the

:04:02.:04:09.

car he is just going out. He will go out now and that will help

:04:09.:04:13.

things. Eric is walking back across to the pit wall. He's going to

:04:13.:04:20.

monitor what is going on with Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.

:04:20.:04:24.

I know how noisy it is down there, you are doing a grand job. This

:04:24.:04:31.

particular pit lane and the grandstand opposite it really does

:04:31.:04:39.

bounce the sound from the V8 engines. Good to hear from Eric

:04:39.:04:45.

Boullier and that they are back on here. This track should luet the

:04:45.:04:50.

Lotus better. Last year they tried to go too far on the final stint of

:04:50.:04:56.

tyres. They got the strategy a bit wrong. But Kimi Raikkonen should

:04:56.:04:59.

have been on the podium, but as it was he was out of the points. That

:04:59.:05:02.

was the last time he was out of the points. That is an impressive run.

:05:02.:05:06.

He has been in the points every single race since the one here last

:05:06.:05:11.

year. So a pretty good record by Kimi Raikkonen. Let's just see here,

:05:11.:05:21.
:05:21.:05:23.

Lewis Hamilton. Team radio. You want to know more. I have never

:05:23.:05:27.

seen the tyres behave this way is what he said. You can see a lot of

:05:27.:05:32.

marking up on the rear tyre, it mate be pick up on the outside of

:05:32.:05:42.

that tyre. Gary, an intriguing tyre. A lot of vibration. Understood.

:05:42.:05:47.

That's Vettel saying a lot of vibration, but he did lock up, that

:05:47.:05:50.

presumably caused it. Lewis sounding a bit confused about what

:05:50.:05:54.

is going on with the tyres? I will have a quick look and see if we can

:05:54.:05:58.

see anything bad on them. When we lock at the Ferrari left front

:05:58.:06:02.

against the McLaren left front. They look like two completely

:06:02.:06:06.

different tyres they are the same. The car does change the

:06:06.:06:10.

characteristics. We need to have a look at what Lewis was on about

:06:10.:06:14.

against his team-mate, Rosberg. I will have a look and get back to

:06:14.:06:17.

you. I also thought it was interesting when Eric was talking

:06:17.:06:21.

to us he said it was looking like a bigger difference between the softs

:06:21.:06:25.

and medium than expected. Alonso gained about 1.5 seconds between

:06:25.:06:33.

his hard tyre run and his soft tyre run, Webber gained big chunk, 1.7,

:06:33.:06:37.

Massa even more. Notness low all of them have gained quite that chunk.

:06:37.:06:42.

It looks like a bigger gap between the two compounds of tyre than we

:06:42.:06:51.

saw last year. A big understeer from Vijay Mallya, the front wheels

:06:51.:06:55.

going against the direction of the tyres. The Williams are struggling

:06:55.:06:59.

to have a balanced car. Understeer is a killer at China. The front

:06:59.:07:05.

tyres are the ones doing all the work. It looks reasonably balanced

:07:05.:07:09.

as he comes out of turn 13. Back down the main straight. Which car

:07:09.:07:13.

have you been looking at Gary. What tyres are you inspecting? I have

:07:13.:07:18.

been looking at Nico Rosberg Lewis Hamilton is still out on the track.

:07:18.:07:22.

The left front locking better than the left front on the Ferrari or

:07:22.:07:25.

the McLaren. Right front has a bit of tyre pick up, nothing too

:07:25.:07:30.

dramatic. I will have a look at Lewis's car when it comes in.

:07:30.:07:36.

you very much. Just watching ml Mallya on a very much race run here.

:07:36.:07:46.
:07:46.:08:09.

director. Just as the cars stream past you, we had Lewis saying the

:08:09.:08:12.

tyres weren't doing what they expect them to do, are they doing

:08:12.:08:17.

what you expect them to do? didn't hear that, I'm not sure what

:08:17.:08:23.

it refers to. The medium tyre this morning was showing it could do

:08:23.:08:26.

certainly 20-lap stint. That is borderline between two and three

:08:26.:08:31.

stops. We have seen the soft tyre this afternoon going a bit quicker

:08:31.:08:34.

than what we anticipated about 1.5 seconds quicker than the medium.

:08:34.:08:38.

Which is towards the upper end of our expectation. We will see now

:08:38.:08:45.

when they are doing the longer runs what degradation will be like. The

:08:45.:08:48.

track is very dusty this morning. There was a lot of dust in the air.

:08:48.:08:52.

It is clear that the track is involved.S This the first time we

:08:52.:08:58.

have seen the soft, yellow tyres on the circuit. A lot for the teams

:08:58.:09:01.

data had-wise to take in and analyse and work out what to do in

:09:01.:09:05.

the race? Absolutely. It seems to be a big performance advantage, it

:09:05.:09:10.

will be keen over the teams to do the degradation, the long run in

:09:10.:09:14.

the last half hour, that will decide if it is a tyre they can

:09:14.:09:17.

also use in the race. That is what we will see in the next 30 minutes.

:09:17.:09:20.

Talking in general, your aim this year I suppose was to spice things

:09:20.:09:25.

up even more, last year Pierre had a really God year at -- Pirelli had

:09:25.:09:29.

a good year of making that happening. You came in for

:09:29.:09:32.

criticism, but are you pleased with where the tyres are this year?

:09:32.:09:36.

is just a reputation of the last two years. We were having these

:09:36.:09:40.

discussions in the last two years and it hasn't changed. The first

:09:40.:09:43.

eight to nine races the teams are getting to learn the tyres. That is

:09:43.:09:47.

due to the winter testing that is done in conditions where they can't

:09:47.:09:50.

gain much data. But that is their decision. That means they are

:09:50.:09:54.

coming to the races with not as much information as they would

:09:54.:10:04.

probably like. Paul I will let you get back to, thank you very much.

:10:04.:10:08.

We are watching bot Bottas in the Williams, down in 18 at the moment.

:10:08.:10:12.

We are into a different phase of practice now. We are very much

:10:12.:10:15.

beginning these long tyre runs that Paul was talking about. So the

:10:15.:10:19.

order you are looking at now probably won't change. We have more

:10:19.:10:29.
:10:29.:10:57.

Looking at the replay. Braking into the corner, unloaded right front

:10:57.:11:00.

tyre, very difficult to get the balancing right on the brakes there.

:11:00.:11:04.

Real skill required by the driver. And the tyre just giving up a bit

:11:04.:11:09.

in the final stage of the braking process. Definitely looks as though

:11:09.:11:13.

the soft tyre is a big chunk quicker, but the question whether

:11:13.:11:17.

that soft tyre is actually going to be able to last any kind of stint

:11:17.:11:23.

length when it comes to the race? It does, from what Paul Hembry is

:11:23.:11:28.

saying, a 1.5 second gap. Gary, he said the difference between that

:11:28.:11:36.

was 1.5, that is bigger than we are used to? It is, it is a little bit

:11:36.:11:43.

worryingly big, these are two tyres side-by-side in the compound range.

:11:43.:11:50.

A bit confusing. I mean if it will be a two-stop race as Nico Rosberg

:11:50.:11:57.

did last year, you will have to do lap 12-14 on the tyre you qualified

:11:57.:12:04.

on. Which at 1.5 secondeds it will be the soft tyre and then the hard

:12:04.:12:08.

tire for 24 laps. That will be hard to put the tyres underneath, it is

:12:08.:12:12.

the two or three stops. It will be a mixture through the afternoon. It

:12:12.:12:16.

is cooling down a bit. We are getting a bit of cloud now, the

:12:16.:12:21.

track temperature must be dropping now. That was crucial last year, if

:12:21.:12:26.

you remember, Nico Rosberg set a lap and then the cloud came over

:12:26.:12:32.

and no-one else was able tole challenge his lap. The track is

:12:32.:12:35.

incred below sensitive to temperature. When we get to Q3 that

:12:35.:12:39.

could be an interesting factor. On the radio a moment ago, Kimi

:12:39.:12:43.

Raikkonen's race engineer said to him the option, the soft tyre isn't

:12:43.:12:48.

locking great for the race. By which he means we are not going to

:12:48.:12:52.

be able to do particularly long stint on the soft tyres, they would

:12:52.:12:55.

have to concentrate their race pace on the medium. That is the evidence

:12:55.:12:59.

that is coming to the teams as well, by the look of things. It just adds

:12:59.:13:04.

a little more unknown into the mix, which makes it exciting. Similar

:13:04.:13:09.

kind of race pace interestingly from Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis

:13:09.:13:16.

Hamilton. They are running 1.43.3 on the medium compound tyre. We are

:13:16.:13:19.

guessing the Lotus and Mercedes will be competitive. And locking at

:13:19.:13:22.

the race pace they are looking similar at this stage. That is very,

:13:22.:13:27.

very interesting. Button has just gone across the line at 1.45.5,

:13:27.:13:32.

that would indicate a little slower. Again, can't always read this as

:13:32.:13:35.

absolute, because they do run different fuel loads on their race

:13:35.:13:39.

runs. But you do get a reasonable idea. They will all want to run a

:13:39.:13:43.

fairly recent amount of fuel in the car so they have good material to

:13:43.:13:51.

go on. That was a good lap by Massa in that case. 1.45, that is in the

:13:51.:13:55.

same ball park as Hamilton and Raikkonen. Back on board with

:13:55.:14:03.

Valtteri Bottas here. Let's see this lap time. 1.38.2. Let's have a

:14:03.:14:08.

look at the indicators in front of us he has done five lap on those

:14:09.:14:17.

soft tyres, not exactly a big long run in this particular case. Alonso

:14:17.:14:22.

still on the soft tyres at the moment. That is interesting. So

:14:22.:14:27.

Alonso not doing a harder tyre run, he's still on the soft tyres,

:14:27.:14:31.

getting an idea on how it lasts. Gary has moved along now, at Red

:14:31.:14:36.

Bull. What can you tell us there? I'm in front of Vettel's car, we

:14:36.:14:40.

are seeing something we normally don't see much of, on the front, an

:14:40.:14:44.

area in front of the rear intake, which turns the inflow in front of

:14:44.:14:47.

the chassis, and brings it out around the side of the car. There

:14:47.:14:50.

is a very important part for creating downforce. What we are

:14:50.:14:55.

seeing at the moment is one of the mechanics, two of them, cutting the

:14:55.:14:59.

stop of the board off, they are grinding it into more of a knife

:14:59.:15:04.

edge. What happens with these parts of the body work is it sets up a

:15:04.:15:08.

vortex, you have a very sharp corner it sets up a vortex and

:15:08.:15:14.

generates a swirling lax in the air flow, that makes higher energy

:15:14.:15:17.

airflow, I have never seen anyone try to create it in a garj in the

:15:17.:15:21.

middle of a session. Especially at Red Bull. One guy working each side

:15:21.:15:25.

of the car, they are trying to get the bars to work more efficiently.

:15:25.:15:31.

It may be a telephone call back to Milton Keynes who have said they

:15:31.:15:35.

have found that it works well and they have decided to doing it.

:15:35.:15:39.

That is fantastic Gary. It shows you how hard Red Bull are always

:15:39.:15:45.

pushing, to see it during a session, it is so unusual. Doing things

:15:45.:15:50.

during the session, normally they take the parts off and do it

:15:50.:15:56.

carefully around the car. It gives you an idea of how hard Red Bull

:15:56.:15:59.

push. Presumably they will send him on his way.

:15:59.:16:09.
:16:09.:16:19.

Webber was wide there, on the than we expected, I wonder if that

:16:19.:16:29.
:16:29.:16:33.

is more marbles off line that we seen Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen.

:16:33.:16:37.

Ferrari are also looking strong, there is no doubt about it. Alonso

:16:37.:16:40.

currently third-fastest and hoping for a good weekend. Their third

:16:40.:16:44.

driver is a man who has been a test driver many times in Formula One

:16:44.:16:52.

for McLaren, and racing for HRT last year, Pedro Delaroso. Pedro, a

:16:53.:16:57.

new role as development driver for Ferrari, how it going, how are you

:16:57.:17:04.

enjoying it? It is good, a new team for me. But the atmosphere in the

:17:04.:17:11.

team is very good. A lot of Italians, being Spanish, Italian is

:17:11.:17:15.

quite similar, I'm basically finding my way inside the team. But

:17:15.:17:22.

already I feel at home. Is it a big difference coming to a big team

:17:22.:17:27.

like Ferrari, it has its own unique brand? Sometimes you understand

:17:27.:17:31.

what Ferrari means, just by the fact that everything is bigger than

:17:31.:17:35.

in any other team. However, I have been at McLaren as well, and

:17:35.:17:39.

another great team with great people. So in a way I think both

:17:39.:17:43.

teams are quite similar. I have to ask you about Felipe Massa's form,

:17:44.:17:48.

he seems in great form at the moment. He has beaten Alonso in

:17:48.:17:52.

qualifying in the last four times out, and he's leading at the moment.

:17:52.:17:56.

He seems renewed? He's driving very well, I don't think he's driving

:17:57.:18:00.

very well this season, I think at the end of the last year he was

:18:00.:18:04.

already doing a great job. He likes the new tyres and the soft tires

:18:04.:18:08.

tire as well. We could see this morning how quick he is on the soft

:18:08.:18:13.

tyre, in the winter as well. That is the good thing about Ferrari,

:18:13.:18:18.

that we have two very competitive drivers. It is good to fight for

:18:18.:18:23.

the constructor, it is early days, but we have a lot to do. So far I

:18:23.:18:26.

think that both drivers are performing at extremely high level.

:18:26.:18:30.

This car is so much improved from this time last year, isn't it?

:18:30.:18:36.

well I cannot say much, I have only driven this car but it is

:18:36.:18:44.

definitely a good car. I think that we are also quite competitive in

:18:44.:18:49.

terms of degradation, especially in the rear tyres, that makes the

:18:49.:18:53.

whole package more competitive. will let you get back to it. Thank

:18:53.:18:57.

you very much. Pedro de la Rosa, a veteran of some

:18:57.:19:01.

104 Grand Prix himself. He celebrated his 100th Grand Prix

:19:01.:19:05.

appearance in it low last year. There was a huge amount of people

:19:05.:19:11.

turned up to -- in Italy last year. There was a huge amount of people

:19:11.:19:15.

turned up to that. He has a huge amount of experience A lot of

:19:15.:19:20.

testing for Ferrari, and Alonso didn't attend the first test in

:19:20.:19:23.

Spain. Pedro de la Rosa did Alonso's stint at the first test.

:19:23.:19:26.

It has been great for him and the team. It means he has the knowledge

:19:26.:19:30.

and feedback from the car itself,'s spending a lot of time on the

:19:30.:19:39.

simulator work as well, and making the most of it Which end, front or

:19:39.:19:43.

rear? Front. You need get out of the traffic and get some clean laps.

:19:43.:19:46.

At the moment the pace is still, compared to the other people on the

:19:46.:19:51.

tyre, the pace is not good, it is incredible. The pace is not good it

:19:51.:19:57.

is incredible saiz Rob Smedley. It isn't, he's doing 1.46 is Massa, he

:19:57.:20:02.

does seem to be struggling a little bit. It is only his last lap around

:20:02.:20:12.
:20:12.:20:17.

was 1.46, it is not in the ball park of some of the others guys.

:20:17.:20:21.

For whatever reason the Ferrari not so good on this particular race

:20:21.:20:31.
:20:31.:20:33.

stint perhaps. But he is in traffic. He was find Jean-Eric Vergne. We

:20:33.:20:36.

are seeing if you are running behind other people on the tyres,

:20:36.:20:40.

you put so much more heat through them, and you suffer degradation

:20:40.:20:45.

more quickly in traffic than out there on your own. Just having a

:20:45.:20:51.

quick look to see what Sutil was doing there as he crossed the line.

:20:51.:20:57.

Nothing particularly dramatic. Massa has managed, interestingly,

:20:58.:21:03.

Massa has managed a 1.42.8 on his own. It locks like in traffic he

:21:03.:21:07.

has been struggling for pace, rather than getting clear laps.

:21:07.:21:12.

That is why Rob Smedley was saying get yourself out of traffic. There

:21:12.:21:17.

was a better lap there 1.43. Not struggling so much when he gets

:21:17.:21:22.

into clear air. Paul di Resta for Force India, currently ninth-

:21:22.:21:27.

quickest this in the session. Now focusing himself on the long run. A

:21:27.:21:34.

quick lap last time around, I don't know if he has as much fuel in, a

:21:34.:21:38.

1.42.7 for Paul di Resta. Force India are very happy about the way

:21:38.:21:42.

the car is looking after its tyres and the balance remaining

:21:42.:21:45.

consistent throughout the use of the tyres. That is so crucial. Not

:21:45.:21:49.

only have you got to look after the tyres, but you have to hope that

:21:49.:21:52.

the front and rear tyres go off at about the same level, otherwise you

:21:52.:21:57.

end up with a car which has armfuls of understeer or want to spin all

:21:57.:22:02.

the time. I think Force India have come up with a good car this year.

:22:02.:22:12.
:22:12.:22:14.

That is another good lap. I think something fell off Adrian

:22:14.:22:22.

Sutil's car, whether it was a piece of rubber or carbon fibre. Cruising

:22:22.:22:25.

in slowly. Gary, I don't know if you have a chance to look at Jenson

:22:26.:22:29.

Button, punctured left front? come into the pits in front of me

:22:29.:22:35.

right now, flailing around, I'm not sure if it has come from a flat

:22:35.:22:41.

spot or puncture. I will try to get a quick look at it. Losing a set of

:22:41.:22:46.

tyres without a bit of drama. has fire from the undertray, there

:22:46.:22:51.

was a little bit of flame from the tea tray area I think it is OK, it

:22:51.:22:55.

has been blown out by the fact that he's now going along. That was a

:22:55.:22:59.

bit dramatic. As I say they have the front tyre away now. It didn't

:22:59.:23:03.

look like it had a big flat spot on it. It could be where you were

:23:03.:23:09.

saying earlier about the kerbs. Maybe it could be a flat spot. I

:23:09.:23:14.

only saw the back of the tyre. had a replay, the tire may have

:23:14.:23:20.

already deflated by the time he got the lock-up. Then we had the smoke

:23:20.:23:27.

and flame from beneath the car. So we gather from Paul Hembry it was a

:23:27.:23:33.

flat spot. That is what caused the puncture. Quite dramatic pictures

:23:33.:23:36.

from McLaren. We could see the flat spot there, my Godliness w that

:23:36.:23:46.
:23:46.:23:54.

view of the tyre, we had another angle on it. Absolutely shredded.

:23:54.:23:59.

Teams trying to gather data on both kinds of tyre. For example, I think

:23:59.:24:04.

Massa, here he is, he has done some 20 lap on this set. The soft

:24:04.:24:12.

started in 42.5 and gone out to 46. If this was the race you are still

:24:12.:24:18.

doing some of the fastest lap times to be perfectly honest, even with

:24:18.:24:22.

less than good tyres. That is nice, useful information for us. Massa

:24:22.:24:28.

has done 21 laps, apart from the worry about his lap times in

:24:28.:24:34.

traffic, in fact they are looking very good on these medium compound

:24:34.:24:37.

tyres. That was an interesting comment. That Alonso had gone out

:24:37.:24:44.

from a 1.42-1.46 on the soft tyre, that is a huge loss of performance?

:24:44.:24:48.

The front tyre definitely does go away, once it starts to happen it

:24:48.:24:53.

eats up so much time especially with the long cornerers. I have

:24:53.:25:01.

been watching come -- and corner, and I have been watching the rear

:25:01.:25:05.

overstep is mass yi. It is all done in lap time f they are happy we

:25:05.:25:10.

will see on Sunday afternoon. will depend on temperatures, we are

:25:10.:25:18.

expecting weather to be similar. The temperatures have dropped from

:25:18.:25:24.

the start of the session. Temperatures at 22. The wind has

:25:24.:25:28.

changed direction, it has gone 180 degrees. But there isn't a great

:25:28.:25:35.

deal of breeze out there. It looks still across the track to find any

:25:35.:25:39.

flags fluttering in the breeze, there aren't many. It looks pretty

:25:39.:25:48.

still. Sebatian Vettel is on track. He has done a 1.42.6, he is in the

:25:48.:25:52.

ball park, definitely with the race pace, you would be surprised if he

:25:52.:25:59.

wasn't. Raikkonen has done a 1.42, that is a good lap from him. Now

:25:59.:26:05.

they are generally coming towards the end of these lap run. Let's see

:26:05.:26:09.

Vettel has done ten laps on this set of tyres, you would expect the

:26:09.:26:17.

lap time to be effective. Raikkonen has got a soft tyre on at the

:26:18.:26:23.

moment. I guess that is irrelevant. Raikkonen is doing. Vettel into

:26:23.:26:27.

turn one. The road climbs a bit there. This is Esteban Gutierrez.

:26:27.:26:31.

Not in the Sauber at the moment obviously. Where is he. He's 13th

:26:31.:26:36.

in the outright positions in this session. His team-mate, Nico

:26:36.:26:40.

Hulkenberg down in 17th interestingly enough. And Chilton,

:26:40.:26:43.

they did get the car back then. That was interesting, I didn't

:26:43.:26:46.

think they would have been able to get the car back. They obviously

:26:46.:26:51.

did, it is pulling off the road again. Marussia having a bit of a

:26:51.:26:54.

tough time of it here. They did get the car back. I didn't think they

:26:54.:26:57.

would be able to. He has gone and stopped again. If they got it back

:26:57.:27:02.

and they were able to run it again, obviously it wasn't the engine

:27:02.:27:07.

itself has failed, it must absence sor or electronics problem, giving

:27:07.:27:12.

it a signal to say there is no oil pressure. The same problem again

:27:12.:27:18.

probably, better to recognise the same problem twice today than

:27:18.:27:23.

tomorrow. Massa and Alonso has come and put on the soft tyre, the

:27:23.:27:28.

medium tyre did look OK. I'm watching Alonso coming down the

:27:28.:27:34.

pitlane, he has the soft tyre on the car and he's putting on the

:27:34.:27:44.
:27:44.:27:47.

medium. Massa's run, he did over 21 laps for Massa on the last set of

:27:47.:27:50.

tyres, the medium tyre will hold up well in the race, there is no doubt.

:27:50.:27:54.

The question is how far they will be able to go on the soft tire.

:27:54.:28:01.

There was Chilton coming past Perez. Now do we see the car suddenly slow

:28:02.:28:06.

down, no fluid coming out the back of the Marussia and on to the

:28:06.:28:12.

camera lens, this was Webber a bit further behind. And they were all

:28:12.:28:16.

getting in each other's way. But again there was definitely fluid

:28:16.:28:20.

from the back of the Marussia. Then suddenly you saw Max Chilton slow

:28:20.:28:24.

down. That could be much more than an electrical problem this time,

:28:24.:28:27.

I'm afraid. There was definitely something coming out of that

:28:27.:28:31.

Marussia the back of it, that was going on to the camera lens on

:28:31.:28:36.

Sergio Perez's car. It made Perez slow down. Because of that he held

:28:36.:28:40.

up Webber. It all got a bit complicated. The Marussia is at the

:28:40.:28:44.

side of the track, it won't be as straight forward as we thought?

:28:44.:28:49.

it is better to go out there and have the problem again today than

:28:49.:28:51.

tomorrow morning. Just watch Vettel coming through and putting on a

:28:51.:28:55.

different nose on the car. I'm not sure what he has done in lap time.

:28:55.:28:59.

I haven't been able to look at it. He does looks a though he's

:28:59.:29:06.

fighting it a little bit. He's not just sort of like the cream rising

:29:06.:29:10.

to the top like normal. He's fighting, he's trying a different

:29:10.:29:13.

nose on the car to see if there is something wrong with the and wing

:29:14.:29:17.

that was on the car. It is the sort of thing you do when having a

:29:17.:29:21.

battle with yourself to find the best balance for the car. Keep an

:29:21.:29:25.

eye on him in the next couple of laps. We will do. Obviously a lot

:29:25.:29:31.

of work going on at Red Bull, more bits of rubber being thrown up in

:29:31.:29:36.

the air by Kimi Raikkonen for Lotus. Big chunks of Rubinho -- that is

:29:36.:29:43.

surprising. -- of rubber, that is surprising. Lewis Hamilton is on

:29:43.:29:47.

medium compound tyres with a lot of laps, some 25 laps. I'm not sure if

:29:47.:29:52.

there is a long run or he has put them back on. Interesting that he's

:29:52.:29:58.

on a set of tires toirs that have done so many lapse -- tyres that

:29:58.:30:02.

have done so many laps. Maybe they are gathering some more data to see

:30:02.:30:12.
:30:12.:30:16.

what happens when you get to the very limit of the tyres. Marussia

:30:16.:30:21.

think it is an oil pressure problem, with oil pushed out the back of the

:30:21.:30:24.

car. Louis you are the current longest runner on the tyre. Let's

:30:24.:30:32.

try to get a lap together. current longest runner on the tyre,

:30:32.:30:37.

this medium tyre seems to be able to go a long, long way. Which

:30:37.:30:41.

perhaps will bring the race back to being a two-stop, even if there is

:30:41.:30:44.

a short first stint on the soft tyre, we will have to wait and see.

:30:44.:30:49.

Gary will tell us more on that when he has done more calculation, I'm

:30:49.:30:57.

sure. 25 laps by Lewis Hamilton on the current set of tyres, that is

:30:57.:31:00.

an impressive number. If we think how Mercedes locked after their

:31:00.:31:04.

tyres last year, they seem to have a bit of a -- looked after their

:31:04.:31:10.

tires toors last year, they seem to have a trick in the Shanghai

:31:10.:31:14.

circuit of making them last the distance.

:31:14.:31:20.

Alonso is on a set that did 13 laps more, running on the soft tyre

:31:20.:31:23.

earlier. In the ball mark there across the line. Those tyres

:31:23.:31:29.

haven't done as many lap. Hamilton did a 1.44.6 on his tyres that have

:31:29.:31:35.

done so many laps. I think that's pretty good, holding up well. Gary,

:31:35.:31:39.

coming back to that. If Hamilton is able to do that on tyres that have

:31:39.:31:43.

done 25, 26 laps, that has to mean the medium is in good shape here?

:31:43.:31:48.

It does really to be honest. It locks pretty impressive. As we know

:31:49.:31:52.

on a Sunday and after Saturday and Sunday and the track gets better,

:31:52.:31:55.

that little bit more rubber in it. That is a pretty good long run. As

:31:55.:32:00.

you say it is heading towards the two-stop race, for some people any

:32:00.:32:04.

way for sure. The problem seems to be that the front tyre is wearing

:32:04.:32:08.

out. It does mean that you can live with that, to be honest. It is

:32:08.:32:11.

whenever the rear of the car gets snapy and horrible and the traction

:32:12.:32:15.

gets bad. That is the sort of thing that is difficult to live with.

:32:15.:32:19.

Absolutely, if you run off track, mistake there from Hamilton,

:32:19.:32:24.

perhaps he has finally reached the end of any grip in these tyres. He

:32:24.:32:29.

just makes a little error up there at turn 12. Watch the rest of the

:32:29.:32:34.

lap, run it is over the kerb slightly. But as I say, as we heard

:32:34.:32:39.

from his race engineer, these tyres have done a longer stint than

:32:39.:32:42.

anybody else. Really preparing for the race. He has been passed by the

:32:42.:32:49.

Ferrari of Alonso there. This is what Mercedes work on in -- worked

:32:49.:32:55.

on in malaiseia, they didn't have enough race prep at the beginning

:32:55.:33:00.

of the season. Hamilton went in and said we need the race runs and see

:33:00.:33:05.

what we have underneath us. They are doing that, a long race run,

:33:05.:33:09.

1.46.8, the performance going away now. He has done 27 laps on the

:33:09.:33:14.

tyres. Still very, very impressive. We are almost in the final moments

:33:14.:33:19.

of this second practice session. Ferrari might be top of the tree in

:33:19.:33:23.

terms of outright lap time t looks a though it is as close as ever

:33:23.:33:28.

amongst the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull in terms of

:33:28.:33:32.

race pace and Lotus. It does looks a though we could be in for a very,

:33:32.:33:35.

very tough race once again. A very competitive race, which is what we

:33:35.:33:43.

all look forward to, of course. Vettel has done a 1.42.3 on mediums

:33:43.:33:48.

that have done 41 lap, Vettel is looking to be competitive, as we

:33:48.:33:54.

might have expected. Nobody seems to have a good jump. Three or four

:33:54.:33:57.

tenths second of advantage, it is tiny amount, we have seen that

:33:57.:34:01.

throughout the season so far. Let's not forget, Adrian Sutil, leading

:34:01.:34:06.

the laps in Australia for so long with Vettel and the like behind him.

:34:06.:34:11.

And yet able to maintain a great pace. So there is no doubt the

:34:11.:34:15.

field has closed up and qualifying again tomorrow is going to be very,

:34:15.:34:19.

very tight ip seed. But, you are going to have to use -- indeed. But

:34:19.:34:27.

you are going to have to use a soft or a medium, with such a tight gap

:34:27.:34:30.

between them. To go through qualifying on the medium tyre, you

:34:30.:34:33.

won't make it through to the next stage. Tyre management and how you

:34:34.:34:38.

use them will be as crucial as ever when it comes to that all-important

:34:38.:34:44.

session. Don't forget qualifying live on BBC One from 6.00 in the

:34:44.:34:48.

morning. We will be bringing you absolutely all the news, all the

:34:48.:34:52.

latest information and then every single session as it happens to see

:34:52.:34:58.

who can try to take pole position in China. Only a few seconds away

:34:58.:35:05.

from the checkered flag coming out. Will Massa get one more lap in? I

:35:05.:35:09.

think he is. One more across the line before the checkered flag

:35:09.:35:12.

comes out. He will get another lap in, the checkered flag is out.

:35:12.:35:20.

Alonso, interestingly, did a 1.42.49 on mediums that did 15 laps.

:35:20.:35:23.

Massa locking good, once out of traffic, very competitive. On a set

:35:24.:35:27.

of soft tyres now you can see. A little bit of a lock up that left

:35:27.:35:33.

front. A set of soft tyres that have already done 10 lap, Ferrari

:35:33.:35:39.

trying to see can we do anything with soft tyres. A little sign from

:35:39.:35:45.

Rob Smedley there, I'm not sure what that means. They want to get

:35:45.:35:50.

this extra data on the soft tyre, you can see the car running wide

:35:50.:35:54.

through turn seven. Struggling a little bit as he comes down to turn

:35:54.:36:04.

nine. He will look to complete this lap. He has been fastest in the

:36:04.:36:09.

session. Earlier on when they first put the soft tyres on T does looks

:36:09.:36:13.

a though Ferrari have got good race pace, but the big worry is how many

:36:13.:36:18.

laps they can actually do on the first stint. They will have to the

:36:18.:36:22.

top ten having to start the race on the tyre they qualify with, and

:36:23.:36:26.

it's likely to be the soft compound what it does mean is once again

:36:26.:36:33.

those guys who qualify 11th and 12th might anybody good shape.

:36:33.:36:38.

Maybe they start the race on the medium compound tyre and at the end

:36:38.:36:43.

of the race throw soft tyres on when the car is at the lightest,

:36:43.:36:46.

maybe that will be the strategy to work. We will wait and see. There

:36:46.:36:50.

is the checkered flag and everybody now finishing off their laps in

:36:50.:36:55.

what has been a relatively trouble- free day of practice. We have seen

:36:55.:36:59.

the odd little mishap, a puncture for Jenson Button in this

:36:59.:37:03.

particular session, after getting a flat spot. We have seen one or two

:37:03.:37:07.

people locking up, a bit more than they would like to. McLaren looking

:37:07.:37:14.

in reasonable shape. Button was doing low 1.42s on medium that is

:37:14.:37:19.

had done 16 laps. Encouraging for McLaren. Their race pace has been

:37:19.:37:21.

better than qualifying pace. That might be the case again. Maybe they

:37:21.:37:26.

will have sorted out qualifying a bit more as well. No doubt about it,

:37:26.:37:30.

Mercedes are looking strong here in China as we saw last year. But

:37:30.:37:36.

Lotus are in the hunt, so are Ferrari, and you can never discount

:37:36.:37:39.

Red Bull, they are the World Championship leaders. We can learn

:37:39.:37:45.

anything from today, and it will be mighty competitive. Just try to

:37:45.:37:52.

accelerate out of the corner. With throttle levels similar to what you

:37:52.:38:00.

use at the race start. Gary you have to have say that, as Kimi

:38:00.:38:04.

Raikkonen is coming in now. It is the Mercedes and the Ferrari that

:38:04.:38:08.

look most comfortable in that session, Vettel still a bit down,

:38:08.:38:11.

session, Vettel still a bit down, you can't read into that. It is

:38:11.:38:14.

still only P2 and a lot of work to be done tomorrow morning, and the

:38:14.:38:19.

field can be put down to a low level for qalfoiing. Looking at it,

:38:19.:38:24.

the red redoes seem to be thrashing, you can see when they are in

:38:24.:38:27.

control and when they are not quite in control. What I'm seeing today

:38:27.:38:34.

they are in a bit of a thrash. Massa in Ferrari a good lap, a very

:38:34.:38:38.

competitive time. It was very driverable as well. Impressive on

:38:38.:38:43.

the longer runs? On the longer runs, Alonso the same, the longer runs

:38:43.:38:47.

were pretty God. A session with a bit of everything. We will be back

:38:47.:38:51.
