Good morning from India. We have got a nice little spot here, in the

:01:03.:01:10.

build-up to you let. This is Lewis Hamilton's home from home on a race

:01:11.:01:14.

weekend. Gary Anderson is with me. It is great to be in the garage. We

:01:15.:01:18.

are trying to keep out of the way of all of these guys, who are working

:01:19.:01:23.

so hard. It is not always easy to predict, but how do you think it

:01:24.:01:29.

will go in Practice 2? I think Lewis Hamilton will be in the mix. The

:01:30.:01:33.

card does suit these kind of corners. As we saw with Lewis in the

:01:34.:01:38.

first session, if you braking errors, but that is what he has

:01:39.:01:42.

complained about in the Mercedes, he has not got confidence on the brakes

:01:43.:01:46.

yet. That is what these practice sessions are for. I think we will

:01:47.:01:50.

see the two of them up the front with the Red Bulls. This weekend,

:01:51.:01:55.

Sebastian Vettel is hoping to clinch his fourth consecutive title. He was

:01:56.:01:59.

fastest in practice this morning, and fastest in every practice

:02:00.:02:03.

session last year as well, which is ominous. Yes, it is. Obviously, they

:02:04.:02:09.

have got the best driver - car package. But Ross Brawn has come out

:02:10.:02:13.

and said, it is an inspiration for them, because it shows it can be

:02:14.:02:17.

done. There is no reason any other team cannot do it as well. Next

:02:18.:02:23.

year, the other teams will be going into it with a big breath of fresh

:02:24.:02:27.

air, knowing that they can do what Red Bull have done this year. Here

:02:28.:02:30.

are the standings... Red Bull could clinch the

:02:31.:02:42.

Constructors' Championship this week end. Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus are

:02:43.:02:55.

battling it out for second. From 18 point of view, these positions can

:02:56.:03:04.

be worth millions of dollars. The battle for second could be worth $10

:03:05.:03:08.

million. That is why those three teams will keep fighting for it. You

:03:09.:03:13.

never know what could happen. A bit of rain, anything could happen, so

:03:14.:03:17.

you have got to keep fighting until that last chequered flag. Just

:03:18.:03:24.

behind us, Lewis Hamilton is getting Practice 1 is about setting the car

:03:25.:03:28.

up, so is Practice 2 about refining the details? It is. It happens at

:03:29.:03:32.

the same time of day as qualifying and the race, so it is more

:03:33.:03:37.

important, because the ambient temperature and the tractor which

:03:38.:03:39.

will be theoretically in the same sort of area. The drivers will be

:03:40.:03:43.

coming out on the medium tyre, doing a bit of a run, getting up to the

:03:44.:03:51.

time of day which represents the last qualifying time, and then

:03:52.:03:57.

coming back in and starting to practice the race run setup. You

:03:58.:04:02.

have got to get that track temperature to get the tyres to come

:04:03.:04:07.

in quickly. So, this is the best experiment for qualifying, and for

:04:08.:04:11.

the race condition. What about the guys around the car, how much does

:04:12.:04:15.

it mean to them? We hear all the time that it is all about the

:04:16.:04:21.

team... It is. Lewis Hamilton is sitting in the car, he is just one

:04:22.:04:24.

of these guys. Without any of them, he cannot do the job. The teams

:04:25.:04:29.

nowadays have got themselves into a routine. Everything happens at a

:04:30.:04:35.

certain time. Everything should just be about that routine, making sure

:04:36.:04:38.

everything is done correct become a and then the car will be ready to

:04:39.:04:43.

cross the red line. Lewis Hamilton, fit and well. We heard from Paul di

:04:44.:04:46.

Resta earlier, who had been feeling unwell. Another driver took his seat

:04:47.:04:53.

for Practice 1, but Paul di Resta is back in his car for this one. Over

:04:54.:05:02.

to James Allen. Welcome to the Buddh International Circuit. It is the

:05:03.:05:06.

third time we have been here. Sebastian Vettel has won both of the

:05:07.:05:10.

previous races from pole position, and who would bet against him doing

:05:11.:05:14.

three in a row? He only needs a fifth place in order to clinch his

:05:15.:05:19.

fourth consecutive drivers World Championships. Lost amongst all of

:05:20.:05:23.

that this weekend a little bit has been the story of the Constructors'

:05:24.:05:27.

Championship. That is also likely to be clinched this weekend as well.

:05:28.:05:31.

Red Bull need to leave here with a points advantage in order to be the

:05:32.:05:36.

constructors champions for the fourth year in a row. Fernando

:05:37.:05:45.

Alonso, with the new crash helmet. And down in the Ferrari garage is

:05:46.:05:53.

Jennie Gow. Just looking at Fernando Alonso, the recall, calm and collect

:05:54.:05:59.

it. He walked across from hospitality to his garage quite

:06:00.:06:02.

late. Sebastian Vettel was already in his car by that time. He only had

:06:03.:06:09.

six laps this morning, as opposed to 24 from Sebastian Vettel. He had

:06:10.:06:16.

gearbox issues this morning, a mechanical problem, is what they

:06:17.:06:20.

say. It took about one hour 45 minutes for them to fix. He is now

:06:21.:06:25.

sat in the car, ready to go out. He will be hoping for a better showing

:06:26.:06:30.

this afternoon. He certainly will. Fernando Alonso, only managing six

:06:31.:06:36.

laps this morning in Practice 1. We always have very stable weather

:06:37.:06:41.

conditions here in Delhi. And that is the case this morning, with a lot

:06:42.:06:47.

of laps taking place, 24 laps, by Sebastian Vettel, who set the

:06:48.:06:49.

fastest time, ahead of his team-mate, Mark Webber. Rosberg,

:06:50.:06:53.

looking promising for Mercedes, third fastest. And it was Grosjean,

:06:54.:06:59.

underlining the form that he has shown since the summer break, with

:07:00.:07:04.

force place, once again a threat to the cars up front. He was the one

:07:05.:07:09.

who took the fight to the Red Bulls last time out in Suzuka. Jenson

:07:10.:07:14.

Button was sixth fastest method of his team-mate, Sergio Perez. That is

:07:15.:07:20.

the reserve driver for Force India, who sat in for Paul di Resta this

:07:21.:07:27.

morning. So, the pit lane is open, the cars are out on the circuit. One

:07:28.:07:32.

hour and 27 minutes of track action to come. I am delighted to say that

:07:33.:07:39.

the director of motorsport for Pirelli has joined me now. One of

:07:40.:07:43.

the lovely things about being here in Delhi is that the commentary

:07:44.:07:47.

boxes are right in the middle of the paddock, so we get lots of guests

:07:48.:07:50.

dropping in. It is lovely to see you, and what are you expecting from

:07:51.:07:54.

this weekend? Well, based on last year, it was a one-stop race, so,

:07:55.:07:59.

coming here with the medium and soft tyre, we think the medium is good

:08:00.:08:06.

for a lot of laps, will be 35-40. The softer tyre, which is very much

:08:07.:08:13.

almost a super-soft tyre, in the parlance of previous years, should

:08:14.:08:17.

bring us in line with a two stop race. That is what we are aiming

:08:18.:08:21.

for. It was a good race last time out in Japan, from a strategy point

:08:22.:08:25.

of view, with Grosjean getting the jump at the start, meaning Red Bull

:08:26.:08:29.

had to change their strategy. Some fans who happens to have backed

:08:30.:08:33.

Webber were not very happy, but it can be clearly explained. It was

:08:34.:08:38.

very interesting to see how it panned out, just a shame in a way

:08:39.:08:41.

that Webber took so long to come through Grosjean at the end it

:08:42.:08:49.

showed the strength of Red Bull in this last part of the season, that

:08:50.:08:53.

they can do different strategies and end up really very close together

:08:54.:08:56.

between the two cars at the end. Roman Grosjean did a great drive as

:08:57.:09:03.

well. That is what you are after, really, you have come in for some

:09:04.:09:07.

flak in terms of bringing in tyres which degrade more quickly, to try

:09:08.:09:11.

and make strategy a part of the game here in Formula 1, and would you say

:09:12.:09:16.

that races like that in Japan are a showcase for what you are trying to

:09:17.:09:19.

achieve? Yes. People sometimes have short memories. You have to

:09:20.:09:27.

remember, we were asked to come up with two stop and three stop

:09:28.:09:29.

strategy is, and it would appear that is the way the sport wants to

:09:30.:09:33.

carry on going forward. One-stop is not part of the brief. When we have

:09:34.:09:38.

a one-stop race, like we did at Monza, we have quite a lot of

:09:39.:09:42.

complaints! I remember last year, you came with a relatively

:09:43.:09:46.

conservative choice, and I think the fourth fastest laps of the race were

:09:47.:09:49.

set in the closing laps of the Grand Prix, which showed that you had

:09:50.:09:52.

brought tyres which were conservative, because they had

:09:53.:09:56.

plenty of life left in them. Exactly, but we are limited, we have

:09:57.:10:02.

only got a certain number of components it is difficult to get it

:10:03.:10:05.

right every single time. If you look at Germany this year, and Hungary as

:10:06.:10:09.

well, which are historically extremely boring races, but both of

:10:10.:10:12.

those came together in the last few laps, so, from that point of view,

:10:13.:10:17.

we feel that we are delivering what we have been asked to do. One hour

:10:18.:10:23.

25 minutes remaining in this unit session, ahead of Sunday's Indian

:10:24.:10:26.

Grand Prix from the Buddh International Circuit in Delhi. We

:10:27.:10:30.

have got four or five cars out on circuit at moment. Raikkonen has

:10:31.:10:36.

gone fastest in the early exchanges. Three laps on the board for him. He

:10:37.:10:45.

is doing in the one point 28, Emma whereas the fastest lap from last

:10:46.:10:50.

year was in the 1.25 pro-. We are going to see drivers doing long runs

:10:51.:10:55.

on both types of tyre, and then about halfway through this session,

:10:56.:11:00.

we will see them take some fuel out, running relatively close to a

:11:01.:11:03.

qualifying fuel load, to simulate qualifying. How accurate a read do

:11:04.:11:07.

you think the teams get from that? It is a very good read. It also, you

:11:08.:11:14.

get a little bit of kit elegy. Sometimes people will put ten kilos

:11:15.:11:18.

extra in just to mix it up. That is something that we see only after the

:11:19.:11:22.

session, when we analyse the data later on. For viewers on BBC Two,

:11:23.:11:34.

you can see the heat build-up in the tyres of Raikkonen. It is a very

:11:35.:11:38.

interesting feature which we have got in the second half of the

:11:39.:11:42.

season. You are the supremely qualified person to talk us through

:11:43.:11:46.

it. Can see, under loading, under braking, going through the corners,

:11:47.:11:49.

you can see where the temperature is being created. It calls down rapidly

:11:50.:11:56.

of course on the straight. That shows you that it is not an easy

:11:57.:12:00.

life for the tyres! You can see that even when the temperature drops out,

:12:01.:12:04.

the inside shoulder still retains quite a lot of heat, does that

:12:05.:12:07.

indicate they are still leaning the tyres in at a camber angle? Yes, we

:12:08.:12:13.

have 3.5 degrees on the front, 2.5 degrees limitation on the rear. That

:12:14.:12:17.

is where you are seeing the work it is always on the shoulder of the

:12:18.:12:20.

tyre, which is reflected in the where profiles. This is only year

:12:21.:12:29.

three of this circuit, and they do not exactly have bad weather here in

:12:30.:12:33.

India, so it is not like the winters will be taking anything out of the

:12:34.:12:37.

track, but what are you seeing in terms of how this track is evolving?

:12:38.:12:41.

It is interesting. We were talking about it because we have got a

:12:42.:12:44.

couple of new tracks next season. In terms of the surface, places like

:12:45.:12:52.

USA, here, Korea, Abu Dhabi, have quite smooth track surfaces,

:12:53.:12:55.

compared to some of the older tracks, like Malaysia, which is the

:12:56.:12:59.

extreme example. In terms of the layout, it will go on

:13:00.:13:01.

extreme example. In terms of the layout, it will go about some of the

:13:02.:13:04.

tracks not being exciting, but this is an interesting layout from a

:13:05.:13:07.

track point of view. So, to remind ourselves, next year, Sochi in

:13:08.:13:15.

Japan, Russia, being built around the Winter Olympics course. It looks

:13:16.:13:19.

like a very quick circuit. On the layout, yes, although there is

:13:20.:13:23.

nothing there yet to measure! We would ordinarily go and take

:13:24.:13:26.

measurements before we get there, and we are waiting to be able to get

:13:27.:13:30.

out there as soon as the surface is laid to verify what it is like.

:13:31.:13:36.

Sometimes in the first years, you do get a little bit of leaching out of

:13:37.:13:39.

the chemicals on the surface, so the first year can be a little bit

:13:40.:13:42.

different from subsequent years. But overall we are anticipating surface

:13:43.:13:47.

is very similar to these new tracks. We have got the

:13:48.:13:48.

refurbishment of is very similar to these new

:13:49.:13:49.

tracks. We have got an old circuit in Austria, we have got potentially

:13:50.:13:59.

a race around the harbour on the waterside in New York, in New

:14:00.:14:03.

Jersey. Kimi Raikkonen just spinning there at the hairpin. Has he kept

:14:04.:14:07.

the engine running Cassius coming he has. He just got his left rear tyre

:14:08.:14:20.

up on the gravel trap. Grosjean fastest, and a flat spot on the left

:14:21.:14:26.

front tyre. Yes, that is a pretty big flat spot. I would guess that he

:14:27.:14:30.

has got a vibration, so he will be looking to come in and change that.

:14:31.:14:34.

So, Grosjean fastest, Hamilton second at the moment. Vettel has

:14:35.:14:44.

gone fastest, he set the fastest time here last year in every single

:14:45.:14:47.

practice section, and qualifying, and the race. He has a way around

:14:48.:14:52.

here, although you could say that around a lot of places. Do you see

:14:53.:14:56.

anybody getting close to him? It is going to be very tough. If we see

:14:57.:15:01.

the way they have evolved the car since the August closure, if you

:15:02.:15:06.

like, they have really done a tremendous job, Red Bull, and they

:15:07.:15:11.

have been extremely dominant. You can imagine them really finishing

:15:12.:15:13.

the season in the same vein double vets get down to the pits.

:15:14.:15:21.

Spoke to one of the members of the team between the first practise and

:15:22.:15:27.

this practise. Kimi is not happy with the set-up of his car this

:15:28.:15:30.

morning. I think they went the wrong with the balance. They are going to

:15:31.:15:34.

have another look at this this afternoon. Just watching him spin

:15:35.:15:38.

out, maybe they have not done enough. I am just waiting for the

:15:39.:15:42.

car to come back in. Not sign of it just yet.

:15:43.:15:45.

Gary, you have got a view of the spin we saw for Kimi Raikkonen? It

:15:46.:15:51.

is one of those situations where you know, you have to keep going for a

:15:52.:15:54.

while on the tyres because these things can happen. A lot of these

:15:55.:16:03.

corners, you go over the brow of the hill. You can't see the apex of the

:16:04.:16:08.

corner until you are on the corner. It does tempt you to go quick. The

:16:09.:16:13.

circuit is very, very open. There is no walls or anything close to the

:16:14.:16:19.

track surface. It is difficult to get a reference until you go over

:16:20.:16:23.

the top of the hills. A lot of these corners suck you in. You have got

:16:24.:16:27.

tracks that have crash barriers close to the track and you are off

:16:28.:16:33.

the pace a little bit. But here we see more run off areas. Rosberg

:16:34.:16:40.

going wide at turn 16. That's because it is so open. You push the

:16:41.:16:47.

car to the maximum limit because the track doesn't give you many

:16:48.:16:50.

references. You see lots and lots of mistakes. Rosberg wouldn't get away

:16:51.:16:54.

with that in qualifying. He would get penalised for that. Well, Gary,

:16:55.:17:01.

it is a 3.18 mile circuit and 16 turns. It is only in its third year.

:17:02.:17:05.

It is a difficult circuit to set a car up for, as well, isn't it? It is

:17:06.:17:11.

getting the balance right. It asks a lot of different questions of the

:17:12.:17:15.

car. It does, yeah. I have just seen a replay of Rosberg missing the apex

:17:16.:17:21.

and running off wide. Yeah, it is very difficult. Straight line speed

:17:22.:17:27.

is very important. The long corners 10 and 11 are important. A

:17:28.:17:33.

compromise in set-up and not easy to achieve.

:17:34.:17:43.

Turn five, six and seven, an interesting area of the circuit as

:17:44.:17:48.

vetful improves -- Vettel improves. Grosjean is second fastest. It is

:17:49.:17:58.

Hamilton third, Perez fourth, Raikkonen fifth, Ricciardo going

:17:59.:18:04.

strongly in the Torro Rosso. Felipe Massa who in the last couple of

:18:05.:18:07.

years has been stronger in qualifying in the closing stages of

:18:08.:18:13.

the championship seasons. Last year, in Austin he had to be moved out of

:18:14.:18:17.

the way with a phantom gearbox issue so Alonso could start on the clean

:18:18.:18:23.

side of the track and get a better get away. Massa is eighth and Button

:18:24.:18:28.

is ninth and Hulkenberg is down in tenth place. Mark Webber now pops up

:18:29.:18:34.

into second place. On again under lining the form Red Bull have shown.

:18:35.:18:38.

Here is Vettel's radio. TEAM RADIO: We think we can fix

:18:39.:18:42.

KERS, but if you can learn something, have another go. We have

:18:43.:18:46.

got time. Vettel has another KERS issue, we

:18:47.:18:53.

think. So well, we will keep an eye on that. The team principal and

:18:54.:19:02.

shareholder at Sauber is with Jenny. A lot of people are saying this

:19:03.:19:06.

could be the last time we come here. It is not on the calendar for next

:19:07.:19:10.

year. What are your feelings about that? It is sad. It is a special

:19:11.:19:17.

Grand Prix. We have seen over the last years that we are having

:19:18.:19:20.

increasingly higher number of fans here. So it will be sad if it is not

:19:21.:19:28.

on. At the moment, it does look scarce. There is not many people

:19:29.:19:33.

here. Do you think Formula One could compete with cricket? No. I don't

:19:34.:19:37.

think we should try that. We have to establish ourselves here. We have to

:19:38.:19:40.

find our niche somewhere and if we had the time, I am sure we could do

:19:41.:19:45.

that. It is all about time and giving the Grand Prix time to bed in

:19:46.:19:48.

and it doesn't look like that is happening. How much disappoint pt is

:19:49.:19:53.

there within the paddock? Well, such for the race people, we have been

:19:54.:20:02.

confronted with certain obstacles. It is not only the administration,

:20:03.:20:07.

but it is all the other discussions going on about tax issues and things

:20:08.:20:10.

and it doesn't have anything to do with us as a sport and what gets to

:20:11.:20:16.

some people if you are being questioned as a sport. There are a

:20:17.:20:23.

mixed feelings. How is this weekend looking for both your guys in India?

:20:24.:20:27.

The track is similar to Korea which was not a bad race for us. So we

:20:28.:20:32.

have come here with high expectations and hopes. We know we

:20:33.:20:36.

have to go on the way we have been. No mistakes. And make sure we get

:20:37.:20:41.

everything right and we are there to grab the points. We talked about the

:20:42.:20:45.

constructors championship being tied up by Red Bull, but the fight for

:20:46.:20:52.

you is so important. How confident are you that you can take the prized

:20:53.:20:57.

spot from them? We were just five points away from P5 and we didn't

:20:58.:21:02.

manage to get our act together and score the five points and we had so

:21:03.:21:07.

many races. I'm cautious and we have to try.

:21:08.:21:13.

Talk to me about Nico Rosberg -- Hulkenberg. There are lots of

:21:14.:21:19.

rumours about a move back to Force India. What's your understanding of

:21:20.:21:21.

the situation? Well, I have an understanding which I can't tell you

:21:22.:21:25.

right now. We know other people are interested in him. He is a very good

:21:26.:21:29.

driver. That's why we took him on boardment of we have options and we

:21:30.:21:34.

will announce it in due course. I love the way you keep us holding on.

:21:35.:21:42.

I suppose the same goes for Gutierrez and his future with you as

:21:43.:21:46.

well? Yes. It was worth a try, Jenny. Hulkenberg is very much in

:21:47.:21:49.

demand despite being one of the heaviest drivers in Formula One

:21:50.:21:53.

which is an issue which we have been hearing, but Gary Anderson would

:21:54.:22:01.

dispute that. Sauber are 17 points behind Force India. It has been a

:22:02.:22:12.

strong run for the he Sauber team. They keep racking the points up. We

:22:13.:22:25.

were hearing from Manisha, it is a shame to go to a venue and the

:22:26.:22:29.

problems like the administration and the tax issues. This race appeared

:22:30.:22:33.

to be under threat this weekend with a petition to get the race cancelled

:22:34.:22:39.

due tonne an issue of payment of tax and the classification of Formula

:22:40.:22:43.

One where it is a sport and entertainment. The news, as I came

:22:44.:22:48.

back to the commentary box just after talking to one of the

:22:49.:22:53.

officials, the Indian justice system is going to hear this case after the

:22:54.:22:57.

Grand Prix. There is no threat to the Grand Prix. . I am not sure if

:22:58.:23:02.

there was. It is one of those that seems to spring up on the he eve of

:23:03.:23:10.

a big event? They seem to get resolved every year which is

:23:11.:23:13.

positive, but it does make it a little bit more difficult from the

:23:14.:23:16.

administration point of view. It is disappointing that you go to

:23:17.:23:20.

new venues and not get a chance to build the sport in the areas, isn't

:23:21.:23:26.

it? India, with an Indian team and with a sports mad country and a fast

:23:27.:23:33.

growing rising middle-class and a young middle-class, all the points

:23:34.:23:36.

that Formula One looks for around the world, it ought to work here?

:23:37.:23:43.

When you compare it to cricket, it is new. It is new and you need time

:23:44.:23:47.

to build that and it doesn't happen overnight, not just you turn up that

:23:48.:23:50.

suddenly everyone will arrive and more so when you have stand alone

:23:51.:23:54.

circuits. You have the exception of maybe somewhere like Austin, but

:23:55.:23:59.

stre circuits tends to force people to - you ruin their weekend. They

:24:00.:24:05.

can't move anywhere because you have turned up like Singapore and when

:24:06.:24:13.

you do street circuits in new locations you get the interest

:24:14.:24:16.

there. Rosberg is saying more under steer in the car and he doesn't

:24:17.:24:21.

understand why. There is an hour and ten minutes on the clock. Mercedes

:24:22.:24:32.

are chasing after Red Bull. At the moment, Rosberg is top of the time

:24:33.:24:35.

sheets. Sebastian Vettel is third and it is Perez, Grosjean mill,

:24:36.:24:46.

Hamilton. It would appear to me from the outside that Grosjean has got

:24:47.:24:51.

his act together within the Lotus team since the summer break in

:24:52.:24:55.

particular. He has got his head together in terms of his

:24:56.:24:58.

performances, but in qualifying, he seems to have an edge over Kimi

:24:59.:25:03.

Raikkonen. How much of that is his own personal development and the

:25:04.:25:10.

different spec of tyres? Well, Romain Grosjean has always been

:25:11.:25:17.

quick. He was our first tester. We did a season at GP 2. Everyone

:25:18.:25:23.

throughout the paddock have said that they knew him to be a quick

:25:24.:25:28.

driver. It was maybe the driving skills. He has got his act together

:25:29.:25:36.

and showed it is not an act in the -- flash in the pan. It is great for

:25:37.:25:39.

him and it is great for the sport. Having a French driver present in a

:25:40.:25:44.

top team is fantastic and he is maturing nicely which I am sure is

:25:45.:25:50.

what Eric saw when he brought him on when some people were saying he is

:25:51.:25:55.

he was -- he was taking a a risk. You brought a different construction

:25:56.:26:00.

of tyre from that point on wards. Is it stiffer in the side walls or less

:26:01.:26:04.

stiff? Is there a reason why he is able to get more out of the tyre on

:26:05.:26:07.

Saturdays particularly in qualifying? No, I wouldn't put it

:26:08.:26:18.

down to that. There is a difference in vertical stiffness for sure, but

:26:19.:26:23.

that would make enough of a difference to his qualifying. I

:26:24.:26:27.

would love to say, yes, but it is probably not true! It is interesting

:26:28.:26:32.

though. Raikkonen is not as strong in qualifying as he was perhaps in

:26:33.:26:35.

the first part of the season. He is coming through in the races, but he

:26:36.:26:42.

is giving himself more work to do. The top five, Rosberg on top then.

:26:43.:26:49.

Let's check-in with Gary Anderson at Mercedes. I am down here with Nico

:26:50.:27:00.

Rosberg's car. He was complaining about having more under steer. When

:27:01.:27:04.

the track rubbers in a bit and when the grip level rises, that leads to

:27:05.:27:08.

under steer because the rear tyres grip that more. When you put on the

:27:09.:27:14.

softer tyre, you have under steer. They will be doing a set-up change

:27:15.:27:18.

at the same time as putting the tyres on to make sure they

:27:19.:27:21.

compensate for that because the tyres will last one good, hard lap.

:27:22.:27:25.

After that, you have thrown everything away and you are going to

:27:26.:27:29.

do a good lap time, you need to get it out of the tyres on the first

:27:30.:27:36.

lap. Well, it is the yellow side walled tyres that are are on the

:27:37.:27:41.

car. Paul, do you agree with Gary there? Yes, the extra challenge will

:27:42.:27:46.

be a bit of graining on the softer tyres and that's something we will

:27:47.:27:50.

only evaluate now. It is smooth and we will want to see if it does get

:27:51.:27:54.

up to temperature quick enough to give that quick lap. If they have

:27:55.:27:59.

got understeer, it will get worse now and that will be the challenge.

:28:00.:28:03.

One of the things that Gary observed throughout the season is that ebb

:28:04.:28:08.

Sebastian Vettel seems to have a way of using the qualifying tyre. He

:28:09.:28:16.

makes sure he has got plenty left at the end. The team radio here.

:28:17.:28:19.

Jao TEAM RADIO: Yesterday, I was

:28:20.:28:35.

watching quali. They do more than one lap on these tyres.

:28:36.:28:40.

It sounds like you are not expecting that this year? It is a two stop

:28:41.:28:45.

race and the softer tyre will ensure we get to that, but you know, teams

:28:46.:28:51.

have been working hard on the rear tyre management. Red Bull in

:28:52.:28:58.

particular. We see that from the data. At the start of the year, they

:28:59.:29:02.

maybe were overheating and that's been reduced in the last part of

:29:03.:29:04.

this season. There was all sorts of clever tricks

:29:05.:29:08.

going on in order to do that. If you get a chance, look online at the

:29:09.:29:13.

inside of the wheels. The Red Bull and the Mercedes have been doing a

:29:14.:29:19.

lot of work. Using the heat in the rear tyres or dispersing the heat

:29:20.:29:24.

that comes off the brakes and inside the wheels. Very, very clever stuff

:29:25.:29:28.

going on. It is real cutting edge science in order to manage the

:29:29.:29:33.

thermal management of the tyres. It is critical in this Pirelli era. The

:29:34.:29:41.

Pirelli motorsport director is with me. There is just over an hour to go

:29:42.:29:46.

in this 90 minutes free practise session. I have yet to see anyone

:29:47.:29:51.

going out on the softer of the two tyre compounds. Remember, you can

:29:52.:29:58.

get in touch with us using the hashtag F 1 on twitter. One for Paul

:29:59.:30:03.

here, will there be any changes to the tyres next year given that we

:30:04.:30:06.

have the introduction of new technology on the cards? I know the

:30:07.:30:09.

answer is yes. It has been a headache for you, hasn't? A big

:30:10.:30:19.

challenge. You get a lot of talk. Management of the rear tyre

:30:20.:30:22.

overheating is going to be vital. So you just mentioned Red Bull and

:30:23.:30:26.

Mercedes, probably a lot of work they are doing already and it will

:30:27.:30:29.

give them some good information for next year. So we have to become a

:30:30.:30:32.

little bit more conservative. There is no doubt about that. But

:30:33.:30:36.

indications are that we are still aiming for a two to three stop race.

:30:37.:30:43.

The teams have had meetings and the indications, we will try to make

:30:44.:30:45.

sure there is no one stop racing. Thank you.

:30:46.:30:47.

. We have got another question here -

:30:48.:31:14.

with the Indian Grand Prix being a compromise of speed and cornering,

:31:15.:31:18.

Gary Anderson, two teams set up their cars to favour one aspect, or

:31:19.:31:24.

both equally? It is difficult. Straight-line speed means running

:31:25.:31:28.

lower wing levels, but in qualifying, to be honest, the more

:31:29.:31:32.

downforce you can run, faster lap time you can do. So, you are in the

:31:33.:31:34.

middle of that. downforce you can run, faster lap

:31:35.:31:36.

time you can do. So, you You will try to make sure you are running

:31:37.:31:40.

enough downforce so as not to destroy the towers. -- tyres. You

:31:41.:31:49.

would maybe try to make sure the balance of the car through turn 12

:31:50.:31:54.

is very good. As Paul Hembery was saying, when you get graining on the

:31:55.:31:57.

front tyres, you get more and more understeer, and it tears the top of

:31:58.:32:03.

the tyres away. Minimising that graining is vitally important. As

:32:04.:32:08.

far as qualifying is concerned, on one lap, it does not really matter.

:32:09.:32:20.

Currently Raikkonen with the fastest time. We will look at how much he

:32:21.:32:30.

improves by. You are anticipating about eight tenths, with the softer

:32:31.:32:40.

tyre? Eight tenths to one second, yes. Kimi Raikkonen has backed right

:32:41.:32:44.

off now. That was quite a moment, the front of the car simply did not

:32:45.:32:47.

want to go where he wanted it to, through that very difficult turn 10

:32:48.:32:55.

at the top of the hill. It sounds like understeer came into play

:32:56.:33:00.

again, with the change of tyre. As you say, it was not going where he

:33:01.:33:08.

wanted it to! No, the Lotus got up on the brightly coloured paint, and

:33:09.:33:17.

he lost his grip. Meanwhile, Grosjean has been pushing pretty

:33:18.:33:22.

hard. He has had to back out of a lap as well. Vettel is also on the

:33:23.:33:26.

softer tyre, doing a convocation simulation. Is the fastest of

:33:27.:33:32.

anybody so far in the first sector. Watch out for Sebastian Vettel. He

:33:33.:33:39.

runs really wide, but gathers it all up nicely on the exit of that

:33:40.:33:44.

corner, and in fact, all four wheels, completely off the road

:33:45.:33:48.

there for Sebastian Vettel. He would get into trouble if you did that in

:33:49.:34:02.

qualifying. Yes, I guess so! He has done a lap of 1.3 seconds faster, on

:34:03.:34:14.

the softer tyre. Over to Jennie Gow. We are just hearing some positive

:34:15.:34:19.

news from Marussia, about your future in the sport? We are very

:34:20.:34:26.

happy to confirm that we have signed an agreement with the commercial

:34:27.:34:34.

rights holder to continue in the same way that the other teams are

:34:35.:34:40.

continuing in Formula 1. It is something we are really happy to

:34:41.:34:45.

have been able to get concluded. I know I spoke to you earlier in the

:34:46.:34:50.

season, and you were not quite sure what was going to happen. No, it has

:34:51.:34:56.

taken a long time, but the thing is, we have got the deal done, it is

:34:57.:35:00.

signed, and we can look forward to racing for many years to come. What

:35:01.:35:10.

change will that make within the Marussia team? To be honest, it is

:35:11.:35:14.

more about what we will do next year. That agreement with the

:35:15.:35:22.

commercial rights holder has now been put to bed, so I think it will

:35:23.:35:30.

be more about people how people perceive as externally, than

:35:31.:35:36.

anything else. Thank you very much. When he talks about that, he is

:35:37.:35:39.

talking about sponsors as much is about fans. Because sponsors would

:35:40.:35:43.

not want to get involved with the team if they are not sure whether

:35:44.:35:47.

the team will survive, because of not having a commercial arrangement.

:35:48.:35:50.

They were the odd one out for a very long time, the 11th team, although

:35:51.:35:55.

at the moment they are on target to finish 10th, and Caterham are the

:35:56.:36:00.

11th team, as things stand. But that is good news for Formula 1, and for

:36:01.:36:06.

Marussia, a well-run team, as I found when I went on the pit wall on

:36:07.:36:11.

Saturday morning practice in Canada. Absolutely. They are a very

:36:12.:36:15.

hard-working team, they do not have the resources of the top teams, but

:36:16.:36:19.

they have a plan and they are working to it. It is good for

:36:20.:36:22.

Formula 1 that they will now be able to move forward and probably attract

:36:23.:36:27.

the sponsors which might have been hindered. I know you have to rush

:36:28.:36:31.

off because you have got a busy afternoon in front of you, but just

:36:32.:36:34.

some final thoughts, as we look at Mark Webber setting off, we saw a

:36:35.:36:46.

big improvement from Vettel there? Yes, he was maybe taking an

:36:47.:36:54.

exaggerated way around the circuit, but yes, they are looking strong. No

:36:55.:36:58.

surprises there. But also, we are going to get will be the Mercedes

:36:59.:37:03.

and the Lotus pushing them as hard as they can. Thank you very much for

:37:04.:37:07.

taking the time to come and visit us in the commentary box, Paul, good

:37:08.:37:10.

luck for the weekend and for the rest of this season.

:37:11.:37:24.

RADIO: Copy that, do you think it is worth to adjust the front wing?

:37:25.:37:30.

JAMES ALLEN: At sounds like one for Gary Anderson to comment on, Nicky

:37:31.:37:34.

Hulkenberg commenting on how he might be able to get rid of this

:37:35.:37:37.

understeer. GARY ANDERSON: Yes, as the track

:37:38.:37:46.

grip comes up, quite a few of the cars are probably speaking about

:37:47.:37:50.

that turn 10, where we saw Timmy going wide.

:37:51.:37:53.

cars are probably speaking about that turn 10, where we saw The rest

:37:54.:37:55.

of these corners, with a quick change of direction, they are not

:37:56.:38:01.

too bad. It is those long corners, and for a driver, he is just sitting

:38:02.:38:05.

in the middle of the corner, waiting to get the throttle back on again.

:38:06.:38:09.

If he is putting more and more steering lock on it, then that is

:38:10.:38:13.

the thing he is going to complain about, so I think we will hear a lot

:38:14.:38:17.

of that before the end of Sunday afternoon. Mark Webber goes second

:38:18.:38:21.

fastest, using the softer compound tyre, just under three tenths of a

:38:22.:38:25.

second slower than Sebastian Vettel. So, the two Red Bulls at the top of

:38:26.:38:30.

the time sheet, but Nico Rosberg is out there on the soft tyres at the

:38:31.:38:36.

moment, as well as Raikkonen. Sebastian Grosjean has yet to make

:38:37.:38:42.

the switch. He will take a big step forward ahead of Raikkonen I think

:38:43.:38:48.

when he does move to that tyre. Nico Rosberg is on his out lap, beginning

:38:49.:38:53.

his hot lap. We will keep an eye out for him, see what improvement he

:38:54.:38:57.

makes. Interesting to see Vettel caning over a second by moving from

:38:58.:39:03.

the medium tyre to the softer tyre, substantially more than Paul Hembery

:39:04.:39:06.

from Pirelli was predicting, and a lot of that was to do with the fact

:39:07.:39:10.

that he quite literally went completely off the road, and he

:39:11.:39:14.

would not be able to do that, for sure, and I am sure the drivers will

:39:15.:39:19.

be discussing that this evening in the drivers' meeting.

:39:20.:39:32.

In the past, we have seen Mercedes struggling to match the Red Bull on

:39:33.:39:39.

the Friday. They tend to get faster as we move towards Sunday, certainly

:39:40.:39:43.

that has been the case this season so far. Red Bull would seem to be

:39:44.:39:45.

the car in the ascendancy so far. Rosberg attacking hard, going right

:39:46.:40:08.

off the road as well, and he has now gone third fastest.

:40:09.:40:22.

Hulkenberg has gone wide at Romeo-11, which is catching a lot of

:40:23.:40:31.

people out today. Over to Jennie Gow. We have got another Brit who is

:40:32.:40:35.

starting in a support race this weekend. Laura, the only British

:40:36.:40:39.

woman to begin beating this weekend, and it is a bit of a surprise for

:40:40.:40:44.

you, isn't it? Yes, I only found out two weeks ago that I was doing the

:40:45.:40:48.

race. It is a great atmosphere here so I am so psyched up to do it. I

:40:49.:40:54.

heard a little birdie saying that you were just happy to be on the

:40:55.:40:57.

same circuit as all of the Formula 1 drivers. Yes, they are the people

:40:58.:41:03.

you look up to as a driver. You started karting I think when you

:41:04.:41:06.

were 11, but your history in our team goes all the way back to your

:41:07.:41:17.

grandfather and your father, and you have been involved in developing

:41:18.:41:23.

racing seats, to protect people's lumbar spines as well. Yes, I

:41:24.:41:29.

progressed through to single-seaters, seeing my friends

:41:30.:41:35.

like Charles Pic and Jules Bianchi, so I had to do it as well, see if I

:41:36.:41:39.

could give them a run for their money. Explain what it is like as a

:41:40.:41:42.

young British female trying to develop through this game. It is

:41:43.:41:48.

really difficult, because obviously, there are sexist people in this

:41:49.:41:53.

sport. So, you have two show your absolute best all of the time.

:41:54.:41:58.

Funding wise, it is quite difficult, I know another young

:41:59.:42:01.

British female, Alice Powell, was here last year, and she could not

:42:02.:42:07.

find a place at the higher levels, so what hopes have you got? It is

:42:08.:42:11.

really difficult, it is catching the right person at the right moment.

:42:12.:42:15.

You have to present yourself well and make sure you do the job on the

:42:16.:42:20.

day. Do you find that your dad having been in racing helps? In

:42:21.:42:29.

karting, yes, in cars, he is not so good. But yes, he knows a lot of

:42:30.:42:35.

people. So, what is the next step for you, do you try to go back to

:42:36.:42:40.

the UK to compete next year? I hope not. I hope to do either Europe or

:42:41.:42:46.

some world racing. I just love the atmosphere and the heat, it is

:42:47.:42:49.

brilliant. Do you seriously think that in the future, you could

:42:50.:42:55.

challenge to be on this grid in F1? I think that soon a girl will, and I

:42:56.:43:04.

just hope I can be that girl. Laura till it, trying to make her

:43:05.:43:08.

way as a young female racing driver. Of course, you have got Susie Wolff,

:43:09.:43:13.

a development driver for the Williams team, a former shareholder

:43:14.:43:22.

of Williams. But I completely agree, not enough women coming through the

:43:23.:43:26.

system, it would be absolutely fantastic to get a competitive

:43:27.:43:29.

female Formula 1 driver, and hopefully it will not be too long

:43:30.:43:32.

before we see that. We have got 51 minutes of this Practice 2 session,

:43:33.:43:38.

ahead of Sunday's Indian Grand Prix. We are about 15-20 minutes outside

:43:39.:43:44.

of Delhi, if there is no traffic, anyway. It is a 3.18 mile circuit,

:43:45.:43:51.

and they really challenging one, as the drivers have been finding. A lot

:43:52.:43:54.

of them have been struggling with understeer. Kimi Raikkonen is having

:43:55.:43:59.

a bit of a job getting his Lotus to go around turn 10 and 11 as he wants

:44:00.:44:05.

it to. Some of them have been going

:44:06.:44:18.

completely off the track, which will be a talking point with the racing

:44:19.:44:21.

director, Charlie biting, to discuss with the drivers. The current state

:44:22.:44:27.

of play is... Grosjean was challenging on the

:44:28.:44:48.

medium compound tyre earlier on, but has fallen away a bit on the soft.

:44:49.:44:52.

We saw Hamilton out on circuit, and he came into the pits, and

:44:53.:44:57.

presumably is fitting a set of soft tyres, because he has not yet gone

:44:58.:45:04.

out on the softer compound. Alonso also yet to go out on his qualifying

:45:05.:45:08.

simulation run. He is currently in 10th place. He had problems this

:45:09.:45:14.

morning with a gearbox problem. Alonso, chasing it a bit this

:45:15.:45:19.

weekend, and relying on the information he gets from Felipe

:45:20.:45:22.

Massa, who managed to do 21 laps this morning.

:45:23.:45:33.

Maldonado is 11th. Where is he going next radio year -- next year? There

:45:34.:45:42.

is discussions of whether he will take his Venezuelan oil money to a

:45:43.:45:50.

different team. The Williams Team has been visiting Venezuela to make

:45:51.:45:57.

sure everything is good. Button down in 12th place at the moment. Felipe

:45:58.:46:02.

Massa's brother is in the garage. Remember those scenes with him and

:46:03.:46:07.

his father when they thought they had won the 2012 World Championship.

:46:08.:46:15.

The whole family bouncing up and down by telling them that Lewis

:46:16.:46:19.

Hamilton was going to finish fifth and win the world championship. I

:46:20.:46:25.

don't think they ever recovered from the disappointment Ricciardo 15th.

:46:26.:46:30.

He is yet to use the soft compound tyre. Sutil is 14th. There are

:46:31.:46:35.

question marks over his future as Force India work out what their best

:46:36.:46:41.

options are for next year. Valtteri Bottas has had real high points this

:46:42.:46:47.

year. Third place on the grid in Canada. 15th at the moment and yet

:46:48.:46:52.

to use the softer compound tyres. TEAM RADIO: How is that front tyre,

:46:53.:47:00.

Nico? It is OK. Hulkenberg being asked about the

:47:01.:47:06.

tyres there. He says just about OK. He has the fourth fastest time at

:47:07.:47:13.

the moment. He gave the tyres a breather and did another couple of

:47:14.:47:17.

laps. Red Bull are one and two as they were on the grid here the last

:47:18.:47:22.

couple of years and Gary, what are you seeing in the garage? I am

:47:23.:47:28.

watching ebb is seb's war -- I'm watching Sebastian Vettel's car. And

:47:29.:47:33.

they have just been doing a set-up change on the back of the car. The

:47:34.:47:40.

rear entry roll bar, it is the link that stops the back of the car from

:47:41.:47:50.

rolling. If you go softer. I imagine when we saw Sebastian Vettel run off

:47:51.:47:56.

the circuit a couple of times it was because of understeer. It will hurt

:47:57.:48:01.

the rear tyre more. If they are going for a long run, now is the

:48:02.:48:07.

time to experiment with that. There is work going on in the rear wing

:48:08.:48:13.

assemblies. They will be checking the differential. He has got some

:48:14.:48:18.

problem at the back of the car as well. But they look happy enough

:48:19.:48:21.

with it and they should be back out on the track soon.

:48:22.:48:25.

Thank you very much, Gary. We have over three-quarters of an hour

:48:26.:48:29.

remaining in the second free practise session ahead of Sunday's

:48:30.:48:34.

Indian Grand Prix. In our paddock centre commentary position we have

:48:35.:48:39.

been joined by Force India's reserve driver, James Calado, who was out on

:48:40.:48:43.

circuit this morning in free practise one and he did 22 laps in

:48:44.:48:48.

Paul di Resta's car. Can how did you enjoy that this morning, James? Paul

:48:49.:48:54.

was sick yesterday afternoon so I found out... Did you take him out

:48:55.:48:59.

for a curry the night before? I dropped ice cubes in his drink! I'm

:49:00.:49:05.

joking! It was better for him to miss the session. A good session.

:49:06.:49:11.

Yeah, 22 laps and getting up to speed. I had a little spin at one

:49:12.:49:15.

point which was a shame because it was a good chunk of, it was a better

:49:16.:49:22.

lap and it was unfortunate to the to be able to show what I could do this

:49:23.:49:26.

there. We did everything we needed to do and I went through the

:49:27.:49:32.

programme. I gave good feedback. You have not been able to try the softer

:49:33.:49:38.

tyre which everybody is doing. We are hearing a lot of drivers

:49:39.:49:43.

complaining about understeer. The car not wanting to turn in. We have

:49:44.:49:47.

seen Kimi Raikkonen having a handful of a moment up at turn ten. What is

:49:48.:49:52.

it about this place from the driver's point of view? It is a

:49:53.:49:56.

fantastic track, but it involves high-speed, fast flowing corners

:49:57.:50:02.

which can easily generate undertier in these -- understeer in these

:50:03.:50:11.

cars. When you go into on to a softer compound, more understeer is

:50:12.:50:15.

produced. This morning, that was the main issue with other teams

:50:16.:50:19.

including ourselves, it was trying to get the front tyres to turn in

:50:20.:50:24.

and feel a good bite from the car which was something we were lacking.

:50:25.:50:28.

The guys are working hard to solve these iruse. I am -- issues. I am

:50:29.:50:34.

sure by P 3, it will be no problem. What sort of things do you go for?

:50:35.:50:41.

Put more front wing on? Add more front wing or reduce rear wing.

:50:42.:50:46.

There is so much you can do. When you change something, it can improve

:50:47.:50:50.

that bit, but you always lose an advantage somewhere else. So it is a

:50:51.:50:53.

fine line between making the correct decision.

:50:54.:50:56.

It always has a knock on effect, right? Yes. These cars are so much

:50:57.:51:03.

more complex? They are fantastic to drive, so quick. But like I said,

:51:04.:51:09.

very sensitive to change. Very sensitive to everything you can do

:51:10.:51:11.

on them. Great stuff really. Fernando Alonso is on a lap at the

:51:12.:51:16.

moment. His first sector just coming through to cut the tape now. A

:51:17.:51:22.

tricky little section this, five, six and seven. 130mph on the way in

:51:23.:51:30.

and 100mph and out towards the fast kink of eight and nine. Very

:51:31.:51:35.

difficult corner for a lot of the cars through 11. He let's the car

:51:36.:51:42.

run out. 170mph then and 150mph on the apex there. Now building up to

:51:43.:51:48.

165mph and turns it into turn 15 and he will cross the line shortly to

:51:49.:51:56.

give us an indication of how his lap is going. Turn 16 is where Vettel

:51:57.:52:01.

and Rosberg were well outside the white lines and he goes fourth

:52:02.:52:09.

fastest. The Ferrari has been struggling all

:52:10.:52:21.

year. He is just in front of Nico Rosberg. Just from a driver's point

:52:22.:52:25.

of view, we were talking about going completely beyond the white lines,

:52:26.:52:30.

outside the confines of the circuit. Over the last few years this has

:52:31.:52:36.

been a hot talking point in the drivers' briefings. The rule is you

:52:37.:52:40.

are not allowed to do it. We have seen Sebastian Vettel doing it it

:52:41.:52:43.

and Rosberg did it. When the drivers talk about it, what's the line you

:52:44.:52:48.

take? The rule is simple. You don't go over the white line and gain an

:52:49.:52:54.

advantage and if done so, your lap will be delete or you will receive a

:52:55.:52:59.

penalty. In free practise, it is not so much an issue. The drivers are

:53:00.:53:03.

finding the limit and getting to grips with the car and things. There

:53:04.:53:08.

maybe a little thing from the team or a little warning from Charlie to

:53:09.:53:13.

say keep within the limits, but for qualifying you won't see this, but

:53:14.:53:18.

if you do, you will see penalties given.

:53:19.:53:24.

Charlie Whiting formally a chief mechanic with the team when he was

:53:25.:53:34.

owned by Bernie Ecclestone. I was with them in the summer and they

:53:35.:53:39.

added up between them they have done something like 2,000 Grand Prix or

:53:40.:53:46.

something ridiculous. In total. It is all the Grand Prix that happened

:53:47.:53:52.

since the late 1960s which is most of the Grand Prix that ever

:53:53.:53:58.

happened. Jean-Eric Vergne out on circuit in the Torro Rosso. He knows

:53:59.:54:06.

his team-mate for next year. Lots of action going with Torro Rosso. A

:54:07.:54:14.

lively looking car. He is up in the long spoon-like hairpin and he is

:54:15.:54:18.

dancing a dance with that car? He is doing the tango! He made a few

:54:19.:54:25.

mistakes there. He is just cooling the tyres down. Lively. A bit too

:54:26.:54:31.

much temp in the rear tyres. You find the big benefit with the

:54:32.:54:35.

Pirellis doing a cool down lap and going again, you are able to squeeze

:54:36.:54:40.

more extra laps than if you pushed every single lap. They get too hot?

:54:41.:54:46.

Yes, they get too hot and when that's the case, they degrade

:54:47.:54:52.

quicker. Like I said, he is just doing a cool down lap.

:54:53.:54:56.

You can't do that in a race, can you? No.

:54:57.:55:01.

Is that why you have to be more measured lap after lap? If you were

:55:02.:55:04.

just to push every single lap you would have to pit five or six laps

:55:05.:55:10.

earlier. It is a matter of the teams deciding good ta are get time and

:55:11.:55:15.

how the driver feels pushing the car.

:55:16.:55:18.

James Calado joining us here on the BBC. Free practise two at the Indian

:55:19.:55:27.

Grand Prix. Round 16 of 19 in this World Championship. We have seen

:55:28.:55:30.

most of the drivers doing their qualifying simulation runs. Vettel

:55:31.:55:34.

is fastest in free practise this morning and fastest again this

:55:35.:55:41.

afternoon. Just over, just under three tenths to his team-mate.

:55:42.:55:47.

Grosjean, the only one who has taken the fight to the Red Bulls.

:55:48.:55:55.

Hamilton is in tenth place. He has a set of soft tyres bolted on to the

:55:56.:56:00.

Mercedes now. We will see how close this Mercedes can get to the pace of

:56:01.:56:06.

the Red Bull. Rosberg, what is he? He is seven tenths slower. It was a

:56:07.:56:11.

troubled lap for Nico Rosberg because he has Alonso in front of

:56:12.:56:17.

him who hasn't been pulling up trees in terms of pace this season.

:56:18.:56:22.

A quick thought before we see Hamilton's lot. Jean-Eric Vergne

:56:23.:56:29.

knows his team-mate for next year is Daniil Kvyat. He is a 19-year-old

:56:30.:56:35.

Russian I I have been watching Daniil Kvyat closely this year and I

:56:36.:56:40.

like what I see. What are your thoughts? He is a ta he lented guy.

:56:41.:56:44.

-- he is a talented guy. He is a very, very fast driver. He is very

:56:45.:56:52.

young. He is 19. It is a big step GP 3 to Formula One. I am sure he will

:56:53.:56:55.

manage. They wouldn't put him in the car if they didn't think he was good

:56:56.:57:05.

enough. Obviously, I feel sorry for Felix in the World Series, he is out

:57:06.:57:11.

of a seat now and it will give Jean-Eric Vergne a run for his

:57:12.:57:14.

money. They have been sharing a flat. Yes,

:57:15.:57:21.

I mean, I don't think they will be living together now!

:57:22.:57:26.

I the don't think so! Daniil Kvyat will be moving to Monaco shortly!

:57:27.:57:32.

When you drive for Torro Rosso you do it for the honour. As a young

:57:33.:57:38.

driver, you don't get much money in your first years in Formula One. It

:57:39.:57:43.

is political. The fact that young drivers need to bring money to be

:57:44.:57:48.

able to drive these cars as a race driver, so it is very, very tough,

:57:49.:57:53.

but I'm looking forward to seeing Daniil Kvyat in the Torro Rosso and

:57:54.:58:03.

we will see if he is good enough. Torro Rosso had young drivers.

:58:04.:58:18.

Daniil Kvyat has done more.s The other thing that will be tricky for

:58:19.:58:23.

any rooky coming in next year is the complexity of the technology, you

:58:24.:58:32.

are talking about 1.6 hybrid turbo engines and managing the fuel. If

:58:33.:58:37.

you don't know any different, you just jump in and give it your best

:58:38.:58:42.

shot just like Lewis Hamilton? Lewis was doing a lot of testing before he

:58:43.:58:45.

got in the car. He was older and more experienced as

:58:46.:58:50.

well? Exactly. It is tough as a 19-year-old. It is not just the fact

:58:51.:58:56.

that it is the race driving, it is the mental pressure. It is the media

:58:57.:59:00.

and everything. It is overwhelming even for me and I'm getting on a bit

:59:01.:59:08.

now. I'm -- 24. The decision has been made and I'm sure it is the

:59:09.:59:14.

correct one. . On his qualifying simulation. So faster than

:59:15.:59:19.

team-mate, Rosberg by a couple of tenths and edges out Alonso as well.

:59:20.:59:26.

It is Vettel, Webber, Grosjean, Hamilton, Rosberg, Felipe Massa and

:59:27.:59:34.

Raikkonen. We have Lotus in the Great Ormond Street of -- in the

:59:35.:59:38.

form of Romain Grosjean putting pressure on the Red Bulls. And the

:59:39.:59:45.

Mercedes chasing as well? Romain Grosjean is doing a fantastic job.

:59:46.:59:51.

He seems to be edging out ahead of Kimi. Yeah, I think the red Bull is

:59:52.:59:56.

extremely strong. Even when you follow it, it has got fantastic

:59:57.:00:02.

grip. The Lotus is not far off. It will be interesting in the

:00:03.:00:12.

qualifying session. So one of the Ferraris is in the

:00:13.:00:24.

pits. In fact, it was Max Chilton. It was in fact, Felipe Massa who

:00:25.:00:28.

dived into the pits. At tht point we say thank you to James, but it is

:00:29.:00:33.

always a pleasure to see you in our paddock centre commentary position.

:00:34.:00:36.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck with getting a ride for next

:00:37.:00:40.

yearment of we hope to see you on the grid next year. James Calado

:00:41.:00:44.

then, the development driver, reserve driver for the Force India

:00:45.:00:47.

team. Sebastian Vettel is number four in

:00:48.:01:16.

the all-time winners' list. Six wins from pole position this

:01:17.:01:39.

year. He already has one hand on the Championship Trophy. He is on a

:01:40.:01:45.

longer run now, using the softer compound tyre. This is what James

:01:46.:01:49.

Calado was just talking about, in terms of looking after the tyres,

:01:50.:01:53.

managing them. What he is doing now is simulating the opening stint of

:01:54.:01:57.

the Grand Prix, he wants to see how long these tyres will last and how

:01:58.:02:01.

they will behave in the early phase of the Grand Prix, having done a

:02:02.:02:05.

hard qualifying lap on them. As Paul Hembery from Pirelli was telling us,

:02:06.:02:09.

they are expecting this to be a two stop race. First stop, somewhere

:02:10.:02:15.

around 15-17, ideally, and the second one in the late 30s.

:02:16.:02:18.

around 15-17, ideally, and the second Last year, most people

:02:19.:02:23.

stopping just the once. RADIO: That looks bad! I think he is

:02:24.:02:29.

talking about his left front tyre. It does look bad. It has got to

:02:30.:02:34.

bands of warm rubber clearly visible. The left front tyre of Nico

:02:35.:02:41.

Hulkenberg. I am delighted to say, joining us now is the communications

:02:42.:02:45.

director from the Toro Rosso team, and an old friend, Eric. You have

:02:46.:02:50.

got a 19-year-old, I do not know what it is about you, mentoring

:02:51.:02:53.

these young drivers, another 19-year-old, Daniil Kvyat, is he

:02:54.:03:04.

ready? No, absolutely not. They are not ready when they come to us,

:03:05.:03:05.

ready? No, absolutely not. They are not ready when they come that is the

:03:06.:03:10.

point, I suppose. We had a choice from the young drivers programme,

:03:11.:03:12.

and he was the most ready, as opposed to actually being ready. I

:03:13.:03:17.

met him at Silverstone at the young drivers' test for the first time,

:03:18.:03:23.

and he seems a very clever guy, even if he did put himself in the

:03:24.:03:27.

gravel. We will just see how he gets on. He is having a seat fitted soon,

:03:28.:03:32.

and then we will be taking him down to do enough miles to get his super

:03:33.:03:38.

licence, and then, all being well, he will run in the morning practice

:03:39.:03:44.

sessions in the last two races in Austin, Texas and Sao Paulo. We will

:03:45.:03:47.

see how he goes. Just 19 years of age, but I have to say, I have been

:03:48.:03:53.

watching GP3 quite closely, and he is quite impressive, he is not only

:03:54.:03:57.

quick but he looks like he has got quite a calm mentality on him. He

:03:58.:04:07.

looks reasonably strong in the head. Yes, he has certainly taken a step

:04:08.:04:12.

up in the last few races, I think. He has had some really strong

:04:13.:04:18.

performances. And so, we will see. His big moment comes in Abu Dhabi,

:04:19.:04:23.

and he is seven points behind the leader in the GP3 Championship come

:04:24.:04:27.

about is the last race, and I think the momentum is with him. That would

:04:28.:04:31.

be a good way to go into the winter, if he could win that Championship.

:04:32.:04:40.

And that is what we have just been seeing with Hulkenberg, a message

:04:41.:04:47.

from the engineer of Sebastian Vettel, saying, a lot of teams are

:04:48.:04:51.

struggling with the left front tyre, and Vettel himself observing

:04:52.:04:56.

that he feels it is going away after three or four laps. Those of you

:04:57.:05:00.

watching BBC Two, you can start to see a pattern beginning to emerge on

:05:01.:05:05.

that left front tyre, a darkening area about 3-4 inches from the

:05:06.:05:09.

inside shoulder of the tyre. Mark Webber has it, too. Gary Anderson is

:05:10.:05:15.

the man to analyse it, so Gary, tell us what we are seeing. It is what

:05:16.:05:23.

the compound of the tyre is about four millimetres thick of rubber.

:05:24.:05:29.

Basically, that part of the tread, it is not stiff enough, because it

:05:30.:05:34.

is a very soft compound. It is not stiff enough for these fast, long

:05:35.:05:39.

corners. Going around the corner, you will tear the top of the surface

:05:40.:05:43.

off, because it is moving too much, so it is tearing the rubber. It

:05:44.:05:56.

pulls off the rubber, and it will go away after four or five laps, but

:05:57.:05:59.

that is because you have worn quite a lot of rubber off the top, and

:06:00.:06:03.

when you start to do that, although the lap times get better, it does

:06:04.:06:07.

not last as long. So, if you run the car too fast through turn 10 and 11,

:06:08.:06:13.

you get a lot of graining, or you run it slow and hope that it comes

:06:14.:06:20.

back again, later in the race. So, definitely driver decisions to be

:06:21.:06:23.

made on Sunday afternoon. A perfect and graphic illustration of what we

:06:24.:06:25.

made on Sunday afternoon. A perfect and graphic mean by graining, with

:06:26.:06:29.

the top of the tyre beginning to shear off, like one of those

:06:30.:06:37.

old-fashioned rubbers you had at school, where there were lots of

:06:38.:06:40.

bits of rubber lying on your exercise book. That is essentially

:06:41.:06:44.

what happens with the top layer of the tyres. Vettel has gone into the

:06:45.:06:48.

pits, after three or four laps on those tyres. He had already got into

:06:49.:06:55.

big trouble, and his lap times had dropped off quite dramatically,

:06:56.:07:00.

after just three laps. Yes, I think it will be a problem throughout the

:07:01.:07:04.

field, if problem is the right word. I heard my guys on the radio

:07:05.:07:07.

complaining of similar problems. It is not just the guys at the top end

:07:08.:07:14.

of the grid, by any means. That is Eric, from the Toro Rosso team,

:07:15.:07:24.

joining just under half an hour of this you let session remaining. We

:07:25.:07:27.

have been speaking about your recruitment, Eric, of the young

:07:28.:07:35.

19-year-old, and in the case of this seat, which was made vacant by

:07:36.:07:39.

Daniel Ricciardo moving to Red Bull, it was Felix to cost and Carlos St

:07:40.:07:45.

Junior, both of them were pushing hard for the opportunity, so why did

:07:46.:07:49.

they not get it? It is a brutal thing to say, but the people who did

:07:50.:07:54.

the assessing just reckoned they were not good enough. They reckoned

:07:55.:08:03.

that Daniil was a better bet. Carlos is still very young, and does not

:08:04.:08:08.

have so much experience, and the cost, looking at his season, it did

:08:09.:08:12.

seem to plateau a bit. So maybe that had some influence on it. -- di

:08:13.:08:22.

Costa. If you think a guy has got the talent to do it eventually, then

:08:23.:08:27.

that is the guy you go for. So that is it for di Costa, is it I am not

:08:28.:08:35.

really the right person to ask. But I think he did enough to impress

:08:36.:08:42.

people like Dr Marco and the rest, that something will be done to find

:08:43.:08:45.

him some sort of seat in some sort of motorsport. One other thing

:08:46.:08:53.

people have been asking, with the Daniil Kvyat thing, is he bringing

:08:54.:09:00.

any money to this? I have seen all of the comments, and we have had

:09:01.:09:03.

quite a lot of criticism, but no, it was done purely on merit.

:09:04.:09:12.

RADIO: Very worn but stable at the moment. Nico Rosberg talking about

:09:13.:09:22.

that so, where is Rosberg? He is five or six laps in to his run on

:09:23.:09:28.

these tyres, ten seconds slower than his single lap pace. But bear in

:09:29.:09:35.

mind, he is carrying fuel. This tyre is in fact 14 laps old.

:09:36.:09:53.

So, it looks like Rosberg has been through the graining phase and got

:09:54.:09:59.

the tyre to stabilise again. It's of rubber flying off the front tyre of

:10:00.:10:05.

Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari, as he hammers down the long back

:10:06.:10:12.

straight. He is fifth fastest, just giving the tyres a bit of a

:10:13.:10:17.

breather. Lots of storylines coming out of this practice session. 24

:10:18.:10:21.

minutes remaining. It is a challenge for the teams, to get on top of the

:10:22.:10:25.

tyres this weekend. It is certainly not going to be a one-stop race,

:10:26.:10:29.

Eric. It does not look that way at all. With the dirty track and the

:10:30.:10:35.

graining, it makes finding the proper setup even harder on a day

:10:36.:10:39.

like this. I went into my garage, and it looked as though there had

:10:40.:10:42.

been a car crash in the garage, there were so many bits off the car,

:10:43.:10:46.

as we were trying various things. We have been talking about Toro Rosso,

:10:47.:10:54.

who have signed Daniil Kvyat signed for next year, and you have got a

:10:55.:11:01.

number of sponsors on the car now which are from the Middle East, so I

:11:02.:11:04.

sense a bit of a shift within the team, with the influence of the

:11:05.:11:09.

Middle East, Abu Dhabi in particular? That is correct. I have

:11:10.:11:14.

heard it referred to as our home race, which is strange. Basically,

:11:15.:11:18.

all our sponsors are part of a group which is based there. They have

:11:19.:11:23.

invested heavily in us, and hopefully we will be able to deliver

:11:24.:11:26.

some good results for the next season.

:11:27.:11:31.

RADIO: It looks like the option tyre is quite fragile, so I am going to

:11:32.:11:35.

try to run the prime tyre until the end of the session, if we can. So,

:11:36.:11:40.

Perez being told by his engineer at McLaren that the soft tyre is

:11:41.:11:44.

looking fragile, in other words, only good for 3-5 laps, so they are

:11:45.:11:48.

going to run the medium tyre, which he is on at the moment, through to

:11:49.:11:53.

the end of the session, routing a super long run on the medium

:11:54.:11:58.

tyre... Something flying off Maldonado's right front corner

:11:59.:12:03.

there. Or was that just my imagination? Yes, absolutely, the

:12:04.:12:16.

tyre has now deflated. It looked like one of the brake discs was

:12:17.:12:19.

glowing bright orange. He has now pulled over. The right front tyre on

:12:20.:12:32.

that Williams has deflated. He is on the outside of the pit lane entry.

:12:33.:12:36.

Whatever it was that went inside the right front wheel, it looks like it

:12:37.:12:42.

has brought him to stop. Of course, they had a problem in Japan as well,

:12:43.:12:45.

so it looks like Williams have got something to deal with. Lets see if

:12:46.:13:01.

we can work out what happened. Anyway, I am sure an explanation

:13:02.:13:09.

will be forthcoming. Gary Anderson, you are watching these pictures, do

:13:10.:13:15.

you have any thoughts at these stage? I think the right front wheel

:13:16.:13:21.

that was missing. It was wobbling around a bit, the right front. And

:13:22.:13:29.

then the wheel is loose, and it is running on the brake duct. It got

:13:30.:13:40.

warm through on the inside, and that has let the air out of it. It just

:13:41.:13:49.

wears through, and then, there is no air. They got fined 60,000 euros in

:13:50.:13:59.

Japan for a rear wheel coming off. It is an expensive business letting

:14:00.:14:03.

wheel nuts come off. There you can seek it bouncing down the road. The

:14:04.:14:08.

other camera followed the wheel nut, as you say. As you say, the

:14:09.:14:18.

cameraman, following it like somebody at the open, following a

:14:19.:14:31.

golf ball. There is a little bit of bodywork, a bit of detritus, from

:14:32.:14:34.

the car, also down there. Maldonado is off the line which takes you into

:14:35.:14:40.

the pit lane entry, so he is not a risk to anybody. But clearly the

:14:41.:14:44.

car, with a punctured right front, and no wheel nut on the right front

:14:45.:14:49.

corner, is not the easiest thing for these marshals to move. There is

:14:50.:14:52.

quite a lot of experience in this part of the world. Eric Silberman,

:14:53.:14:56.

you are a former Marshall, and the volunteer sect is so vital to

:14:57.:15:00.

motorsport, tens of thousands of them who do it at all of the Grand

:15:01.:15:03.

Prix, and they are pretty well trained here in India.

:15:04.:15:14.

It is good. You get people from more historically motorsport countries

:15:15.:15:22.

coming over. A lot of marshals from the UK and other European countries

:15:23.:15:26.

to be split amongst the locals to give them experience because you

:15:27.:15:33.

can't expect these guys to know it all. As you say, a vital role and of

:15:34.:15:39.

course, the forklift truck. A sign that something has gone wrong.

:15:40.:15:44.

Just looking at the long runs here. It looks as though the frary is

:15:45.:15:48.

holding on to the -- Ferrari is holding on to the softer tyre well.

:15:49.:15:57.

Mark Webber is a shade faster on the medium tyre than Alonso is on the

:15:58.:16:03.

soft, but Alonso's soft tyre, lap times not dissimilar to Sebastian

:16:04.:16:09.

Vettel's. We have seen Ferrari be gentle on the tyres as we know the

:16:10.:16:14.

Lotus is and the Force India and crucial to Alonso's outcome this

:16:15.:16:20.

weekend will be his performance in qualifying. It looks like he might

:16:21.:16:24.

have a reasonably strong first stint in the race, but from what we are

:16:25.:16:29.

seeing so far, Gary Anderson, Maldonado walks back into the pits.

:16:30.:16:33.

It looks like we are going to have a two stop race and it looks like the

:16:34.:16:36.

medium tyre is going to be the tyre that the teams will favour. They

:16:37.:16:41.

want to get rid of this soft tyre as quickly as they can? If you go back

:16:42.:16:44.

to last year's race, Sebastian Vettel went to lap 33 before he

:16:45.:16:52.

pitted to put on the medium tyre. He did 33 laps on it. That put him in a

:16:53.:17:02.

good position at the end of the race if he needed to have better tyres to

:17:03.:17:09.

fight anyone off. These tyres are the soft tyre and we are seeing them

:17:10.:17:16.

struggle at 13, 14 and 15. I agree with you, looking at the lap times

:17:17.:17:21.

there is going to be the soft tyre and the m he had stadium -- and the

:17:22.:17:30.

medium, medium. That will make it interesting

:17:31.:17:33.

because we have seen Daniel Ricciardo Harting on the -- starting

:17:34.:17:39.

on the harder compound and running a long first stint and it worked well

:17:40.:17:45.

for him if he hadn't the penalty he got in Japan. This looks like a

:17:46.:17:50.

weekend where we may see people trying that because the tyres are

:17:51.:17:53.

the way they are. If you qualify 11th or behind, you could be in for

:17:54.:18:00.

an interesting race if you can run a longish first stint on the medium

:18:01.:18:08.

tyre? You are right, it would have worked for Daniel if the Stewarts

:18:09.:18:12.

hadn't taken the unusual decision over his brilliant overtaking a move

:18:13.:18:18.

around the outside at 130 R. Not that you are bitter? Not at all!

:18:19.:18:26.

Thank you for joining us. It is fantastic to get your views

:18:27.:18:29.

particularly on Daniil Kvyat who I am going to have to fun pronouncing

:18:30.:18:43.

that! Kvyat! It is easier said than done! We are unlikely to see times

:18:44.:18:51.

improving because we have had the single lap qualifying simulations

:18:52.:18:55.

earlier on in the sessions. We have 16 minutes remaining in this

:18:56.:19:10.

session. And we have got a member of the Lotus team joining us. A

:19:11.:19:14.

challenging day from the driver's point of view. Looking after the

:19:15.:19:18.

soft tyres is going to be a huge thing this weekend. You are the

:19:19.:19:21.

reserve driver for the Lotus team and you guys are the best at looking

:19:22.:19:27.

after the tyres. Do you sense an opportunity here? Thank you. Yes, it

:19:28.:19:33.

can be interesting for us to be honest because we saw so many

:19:34.:19:36.

drivers and teams they had a problem with the front tyres blistering. So

:19:37.:19:43.

it can be something really good for us because we did the first stint

:19:44.:19:54.

with softer and we simulated very well. It was one of the quickest. It

:19:55.:20:02.

seems it is a great opportunity if the cars can qualify in the top two

:20:03.:20:08.

rows, we will have a satisfactory weekend.

:20:09.:20:16.

The tyre is 14 laps old. There is Lewis' radio.

:20:17.:20:21.

TEAM RADIO: We need to make sure we get the stint length on this. Make

:20:22.:20:23.

sure you look after them. The pace is very good. Hamilton

:20:24.:20:29.

running on the softer compound tyres. Let's look at his long run.

:20:30.:20:37.

It is in the mid-1.42 range. It is can comparable with the Ferrari of

:20:38.:20:41.

Alonso. It looks like Hamilton is getting reasonable behaviour out of

:20:42.:20:46.

the soft tyres. What are your guys doing? You have Grosjean on the

:20:47.:20:55.

medium tyre and Raikkonen on the soft. He has only started a soft

:20:56.:21:00.

tyre run so it is fairly early days. 14 minutes remaining on the clock.

:21:01.:21:04.

He is amazing though, Raikkonen, in terms of the way he is able to drive

:21:05.:21:09.

these tyres and look after them in a race situation? Yes. He is something

:21:10.:21:13.

special. You know sometimes during the weekend he is not really there.

:21:14.:21:19.

Like sometimes in free practise he is not performing well, but in the

:21:20.:21:26.

race he is always in the top five. One victory already this year. He is

:21:27.:21:30.

something special. He can manage the tyres in a way that other drivers

:21:31.:21:34.

cannot. He is extremely fast and quick in the last part of the race

:21:35.:21:40.

with really low fuel. Yes, he is a big talent and I think we can earn

:21:41.:21:48.

some good results with him this week if the situation remains like this.

:21:49.:21:53.

Grosjean has been taking a the fight to the Red Bulls particularly the

:21:54.:22:02.

Korea, Japan leg. In qualifying, but Kimi has not been at the party on

:22:03.:22:06.

Saturday in terms of the single lap qualifying. What's the problem

:22:07.:22:13.

there? We don't know. Yes, he is struggling in terms of performance

:22:14.:22:20.

in quali compared to Romain Grosjean. He got the last free

:22:21.:22:29.

quali, he was twice in third position. Grosjean is competitive

:22:30.:22:35.

and Raikkonen lost performance, but at the end of the race he is always

:22:36.:22:39.

there. We are scoring good points and it seems that our team is in a

:22:40.:22:43.

good shape to recover points from Mercedes and to Mercedes and

:22:44.:22:58.

Ferrari. Hamilton is a great talent and it will be easy for us to beat

:22:59.:23:04.

them. In Suzuka when we were really competitive on Saturday, one of the

:23:05.:23:09.

Mercedes beat us. So we will try to stay in front of them because it is

:23:10.:23:15.

important for us to be in the top and to fight with Red Bull.

:23:16.:23:27.

TEAM RADIO: You want to continue. Raikkonen told to keep going for as

:23:28.:23:31.

long as the tyres have got performance left in them and it is

:23:32.:23:34.

these moments where Raikkonen is learning. This is where he is doing

:23:35.:23:39.

his homework for the race as are all the drivers in terms of when the

:23:40.:23:43.

tyre starts to go and how to keep it the right side of the overheating

:23:44.:23:51.

and the right side of the graining too much? Yes. He then comes the

:23:52.:23:58.

race and yes, he is trying to understand it and I think he learned

:23:59.:24:03.

a way to use it for Sunday sometimes. The reserve driver for

:24:04.:24:11.

the Lotus Formula One Team is with us. Lotus are only 33 points away

:24:12.:24:19.

from third place. They are fourth at the moment. They are 33 points away.

:24:20.:24:33.

Ferrari on 297 points and Mercedes on 267. If Red Bull aren't in it, it

:24:34.:24:40.

would be a good scrap. But they are in it. Although no one is focussed

:24:41.:24:46.

on Vettel requiring the fifth place finish whatever Alonso does this

:24:47.:24:50.

weekend, only a fifth place would be enough to give Vettel the world

:24:51.:24:53.

title for the fourth year running. It is the case that if Red Bull

:24:54.:24:57.

leave here with 129 points margin or more over the second placed team

:24:58.:25:04.

they will be constructors champions for the fourth year in a row. A

:25:05.:25:16.

spark blowing out of Kimi Raikkonen's car. We are into the

:25:17.:25:19.

final ten minutes of this session. What is the feeling in the Lotus

:25:20.:25:23.

Team about this circuit here in India? Is it one of the popular ones

:25:24.:25:30.

amongst the team? The layout of the circuit is really nice and the

:25:31.:25:38.

drivers like it, but to be honest, the atmosphere of the great event

:25:39.:25:46.

like England or za in -- Monza in Italy, you miss the atmosphere from

:25:47.:25:50.

the people around. They are not really experts about motorsport, but

:25:51.:25:57.

you know for us, coming to India is a great experience and a way to

:25:58.:26:02.

improve a better situation in New deli.

:26:03.:26:06.

The English are always partial to Indian food. Some of the best Indian

:26:07.:26:11.

restaurants are in England. Do you like Italian food? Sometimes a bit

:26:12.:26:18.

too spicy for the he racing driver. You have all got tell cat

:26:19.:26:26.

constitutions, haven't you? Fernando Alonso there. That looks

:26:27.:26:31.

good, doesn't it? I don't think it is good enough to beat Vettel, but

:26:32.:26:38.

yes, maybe a top five position, yes. It is interesting that Alonso seems

:26:39.:26:43.

to have struggled relative to Massa. The same thing happened at the end

:26:44.:26:49.

of last season. Any sense what that is down to? We have to consider that

:26:50.:26:54.

it is not possible to change the set-up between Saturday and Sunday.

:26:55.:27:00.

Sometimes some of the top drivers and Raikkonen is also like this, try

:27:01.:27:04.

to make a set-up that is performing better for the race. So sometimes

:27:05.:27:11.

they suffer more on Saturday, but they destroy their team-mate on

:27:12.:27:17.

Sunday. So we have to consider that maybe Alonso Saturday is thinking

:27:18.:27:21.

more for the race distance. It is true. If you look at Raikkonen

:27:22.:27:28.

Singapore and Korea. It is arguable that he would have got a better

:27:29.:27:31.

result if he started further up the grid because Vettel was home and

:27:32.:27:38.

hosed you cans wasn't -- wasn't he? TEAM RADIO: This doesn't look great

:27:39.:27:48.

for Nico on the tyre. The Nico Rosberg car isn't looking too good

:27:49.:27:55.

on the medium compound tyre. And so they want to stick Hamilton on to it

:27:56.:28:02.

so he can see how it works for him. The lap times are erratic for

:28:03.:28:07.

Rosberg. He is banging in laps in the high 1.31s, but also 35s and 34s

:28:08.:28:15.

a mixed in. Mercedes are not happy with the balance of the car on the

:28:16.:28:20.

medium tyre. It look like Hamilton was doing OK laps on the soft. So

:28:21.:28:24.

they will be reasonably pleased and cautious welcome for the tyre. Some

:28:25.:28:29.

people are having more problems than the Mercedes are having. It is

:28:30.:28:34.

something that they have to take care of because we have to consider

:28:35.:28:39.

if the soft tyre goes away so quickly, we will see a race where

:28:40.:28:44.

more or less everyone will use medium compound tyres for most of

:28:45.:28:48.

the race. So it is extremely important to be fast and quick on

:28:49.:28:55.

these type of tyres. It is a 60 lap race on Sunday. Gary Anderson is in

:28:56.:29:05.

the pit lane at Ferrari? You can see the rear tyre, you can see these

:29:06.:29:09.

marks. These are called blisters. With wheelspin the rear tyres are

:29:10.:29:13.

overheating. The front tyres have grained. They have gone through the

:29:14.:29:19.

graining stage. They have grained. Three or four or five laps later

:29:20.:29:26.

they clean up. At the same time the rear tyres deteriorate. It is the

:29:27.:29:30.

blistering which will reduce your performance as far as lap times are

:29:31.:29:35.

concerned. That's what you call degradation. Here, it is like Korea,

:29:36.:29:40.

we have everything happening to the tyres. When you go to four or five

:29:41.:29:47.

laps, as the graining clears up. It will be a head scratcher on Sunday

:29:48.:29:51.

afternoon. That's what you were saying earlier.

:29:52.:29:53.

It will be good. It will be challenging for the teams and the

:29:54.:29:56.

drivers as well. The best thing to have is a fast car because you can

:29:57.:30:01.

deal with every situation. I guess you guys at Lotus feel you have got

:30:02.:30:05.

the second fastest car out there, second or third fastest? Second or

:30:06.:30:12.

third fastest. Sometimes in qualifying, they are faster than us,

:30:13.:30:17.

but we are really on top. If you have a fast car during the race and

:30:18.:30:19.

you are worried about degradation, you back off and conserve the tyres

:30:20.:30:24.

and go longer. The trick is to be fast.

:30:25.:30:27.

Adrian Newey up on the timing stand. Next year, we have the introduction

:30:28.:30:44.

of completely new technology into Formula 1. Out goes the Gaskell 's

:30:45.:30:49.

Lynn V8, in comes the 1.6 litre, hybrids turbo engine. -- gas

:30:50.:31:02.

guzzling. About a third of the lap, the drivers will be able to use

:31:03.:31:06.

their new energy recovery system, as opposed to the horsepower. It is

:31:07.:31:10.

going to be fascinating. It will be Billy interesting, it is a massive

:31:11.:31:15.

change. For the drivers, they will need to adapt on the drive inside,

:31:16.:31:21.

and sometimes, the engineers, they speak about the consumption of the

:31:22.:31:27.

engine, and some teams will struggle a bit in the last part of the race,

:31:28.:31:35.

with the fuel. And so the drivers will have to manage the fuel

:31:36.:31:39.

consumption, which is not easy. Absolutely. They have all got heavy

:31:40.:31:46.

right feet! That is another thing they have to manage. It is going to

:31:47.:31:50.

go down from about 150 kilos of fuel, which they currently use to

:31:51.:31:56.

complete A303 's, down to about 100 kilowatts of those -- down to about

:31:57.:32:05.

100 kilograms. That is a huge reduction. It is a message being

:32:06.:32:08.

sent out by the sport, in terms of fuel consumption, and also there is

:32:09.:32:13.

the question of reliability, with 21, 22 races next year, with only

:32:14.:32:19.

five engines, potentially. It is not so much the actual power unit, the

:32:20.:32:24.

engine itself, but it is the energy recovery system. I am not sure

:32:25.:32:28.

anybody has managed to get those things to last that length of time.

:32:29.:32:32.

So, we are probably going to see some unreliability coming back in,

:32:33.:32:37.

and we have not seen that for quite a few years. Speaking to your

:32:38.:32:41.

opposite number at Ferrari, Pedro De la Russa, who has been on the

:32:42.:32:45.

simulator at Ferrari looking at driving techniques for saving fuel

:32:46.:32:48.

last year, he tells me, there are all kinds of things you can do in

:32:49.:32:52.

terms of the way you drive the car, the way you roll into the corners

:32:53.:32:56.

and stuff, you can save a lot of fuel. Are you looking at the same

:32:57.:33:04.

things? Yes, you are right. And it seems, just to release the throttle

:33:05.:33:09.

at the end of the straight, before the braking point, you can save fuel

:33:10.:33:16.

that way as well. And usually, that is the way that permits you to use

:33:17.:33:20.

less fuel, without losing performance. Sometimes you can

:33:21.:33:27.

regulate the throttle on except, and try to have some tricks, but you

:33:28.:33:31.

lose performance, which is not what we want. So, it is important to be

:33:32.:33:35.

more measured on the throttle, really, rather than hitting it too

:33:36.:33:43.

hard? Yes, because with these engines, sometimes there will be

:33:44.:33:46.

much more power just at the beginning of the throttle

:33:47.:33:49.

application, so for the driver, it will be extremely important to be a

:33:50.:33:56.

bit more gradual with the throttle. Which sort of drivers do you think

:33:57.:34:03.

it will favour? Always the same, the best drivers, Hamilton, Vettel,

:34:04.:34:10.

Alonso, Raikkonen. Always the same, do not worry. The fastest driver at

:34:11.:34:18.

the end will have the victory. The sport is made by drivers. I could

:34:19.:34:23.

not agree more, although I think your guy, Grosjean, seems to be

:34:24.:34:28.

improving a lot, I have been impressed with him in Japan last

:34:29.:34:31.

time out. 30 seconds remaining on the clock, at the end of this second

:34:32.:34:38.

free practice session. But was Davide Valsecchi, the reserve driver

:34:39.:34:42.

for the Lotus Formula 1 team. Also down in the pit lane, Gary Anderson

:34:43.:34:46.

and Jennie Gow, throughout this session. It looks like Sebastian

:34:47.:34:51.

Vettel is going to end up on top of the time sheets yet again, as he was

:34:52.:34:55.

this morning, and as he was in every practice session last year. Can he

:34:56.:35:02.

make it a 100% record around this track? Who knows when we will be

:35:03.:35:06.

coming back to India? The chequered flag is now out at the end of this

:35:07.:35:13.

session. There is certainly not going to be an Indian Grand Prix in

:35:14.:35:17.

2014. There is some talk about it possibly coming back in the early

:35:18.:35:26.

part of the season in 2015. That was Mark Webber being told, tried to

:35:27.:35:32.

lift a bit more in turn eight to help you through turn nine. Just

:35:33.:35:37.

looking at Alonso's Long Run times, they look pretty good. I think

:35:38.:35:41.

Ferrari will be quite pleased. They are fifth fastest, which is pretty

:35:42.:35:45.

much where Alonso has been for the last three or four years, in terms

:35:46.:35:52.

of pace. It is a bit more difficult to tell with Raikkonen, as it always

:35:53.:35:58.

is with Raikkonen. As Davide Valsecchi was telling us, he does

:35:59.:36:01.

his own thing, really. But we know what Raikkonen is up to when we get

:36:02.:36:06.

to the race on Sunday. Particularly in the last 10-15 laps, he tends to

:36:07.:36:16.

always be there. This is a circuit where a Sebastian Vettel tends to

:36:17.:36:19.

have the edge over his team-mate, Mark Webber. Webber seems to have

:36:20.:36:23.

the edge at places like Silverstone and Suzuka, faces with the

:36:24.:36:26.

high-speed corners that he really loves. The tight, right-handed,

:36:27.:36:31.

second gear corners, that is where Vettel makes a big difference. I

:36:32.:36:40.

think Vettel looks a bit unbeatable. Also, when he has the chance to be

:36:41.:36:45.

close to his team-mate, the team tries to do something to help

:36:46.:36:49.

Vettel, and we saw last weekend, in Suzuka, where Webber was strong

:36:50.:36:59.

enough maybe to win the race, but there was a change of strategy, and

:37:00.:37:02.

Vettel, we know that he is a great champion, and with a little help

:37:03.:37:06.

from Red Bull, he got another great victory. And I think it will be the

:37:07.:37:12.

same story here. Vettel for sure is the favourite for the race. What was

:37:13.:37:16.

interesting about Suzuka was Roman Grosjean getting in front of him at

:37:17.:37:20.

the start, which made things more interesting and more challenging for

:37:21.:37:25.

him, which forced Red Bull to switch strategies. Hamilton, when he got a

:37:26.:37:29.

puncture, was also in front of Vettel. If he had not had the

:37:30.:37:33.

puncture, it would've been a very different ways, and a very

:37:34.:37:36.

interesting race, and I think in that situation, Vettel could well

:37:37.:37:40.

have got moved onto three spots. Yes, Hamilton got a really great

:37:41.:37:44.

start, and at the first corner, he could have been a real challenger,

:37:45.:37:49.

because they were leading. Let's take stop of what has happened this

:37:50.:37:53.

afternoon here in free practice in Delhi. Once again, it is a 1-2 for

:37:54.:37:58.

the Red Bull team, with Roman Grosjean once again taking the fight

:37:59.:38:02.

to the Red Bulls, just like he did in Japan. Hamilton again, pretty

:38:03.:38:11.

strong on the single lap, in fourth. Alonso, encouraging race performance

:38:12.:38:16.

for them. If they can find a qualifying lap tomorrow, he could be

:38:17.:38:17.

in the hunt for the podium. Maldonado, 16th, he had a wheel nuts

:38:18.:38:34.

detaching, and they could be in trouble for that, after what

:38:35.:38:39.

happened in Japan. So, Davide Valsecchi, can you sum up for us,

:38:40.:38:45.

reserve driver at Lotus, what we think we have seen here today in

:38:46.:38:53.

free practice? Yes, it was an interesting day, to be honest just

:38:54.:38:57.

it seems that Red Bull will be really difficult to beat. It seems

:38:58.:39:01.

that Mercedes will have the chance to be on the second row in

:39:02.:39:06.

qualification. It seems that Lotus can fight at least for the podium

:39:07.:39:11.

during the Sunday race. The only team which seems to have dropped a

:39:12.:39:16.

bit in terms of performance compared with last week is Sauber. They were

:39:17.:39:21.

seventh and eighth at the end of the race in Suzuka, and here, they are

:39:22.:39:25.

really out of the top ten. It will not be easy for them to be in the

:39:26.:39:30.

points. And encouraging signs for Lotus, with Roman Grosjean up in

:39:31.:39:34.

third place, as he was in Japan last time out. Are you expecting a

:39:35.:39:38.

challenge from him? Yes, Raikkonen our leader at the moment, 100%.

:39:39.:39:46.

Davide Valsecchi, thank you so much for joining us in our commentary

:39:47.:39:49.

position, in the centre of the paddock here in Delhi. That is it

:39:50.:39:56.

from Practice 2. Another Red Bull 1-2, another very interesting

:39:57.:39:59.

session in many ways, not least in terms of the left front tyres. A

:40:00.:40:03.

lots to think about for the teams, ahead of qualifying tomorrow and the

:40:04.:40:05.

race on Sunday. ahead of qualifying tomorrow and the

:40:06.:40:13.

race on Ominous signs, Gary Anderson, Sebastian Vettel, fastest

:40:14.:40:19.

once again... Yes, you do not have to wear glasses for that one. I do

:40:20.:40:24.

not think it is all over yet. It might not be as easy as it was last

:40:25.:40:28.

year. I think Mercedes are reasonably strong, and there is

:40:29.:40:33.

Roman Grosjean as well. But the Red Bulls do look as though they have

:40:34.:40:38.

got a reasonable handle both on the qualifying as well as on the race

:40:39.:40:41.

setup. You would be a full not to bet on them. But it is a situation

:40:42.:40:46.

where you have just got to do the best job you can. If the Red Bulls

:40:47.:40:50.

are in front of you, so be it. You cannot change that. It is always

:40:51.:40:57.

interesting seeing the pictures of the drivers walking down, there is a

:40:58.:41:01.

lot to talk about at this stage of the weekend. Yes, they have done a

:41:02.:41:05.

bit of a run as far as qualifying is concerned, and also in race setup,

:41:06.:41:11.

but there will be some changes going on on the cards tonight. You have to

:41:12.:41:17.

see how the tyres are lasting, and then you may have to compromise on

:41:18.:41:21.

the ultimate lap pace just a little bit, to make sure that you are

:41:22.:41:24.

durable. That was what this afternoon's session was about.

:41:25.:41:29.

Tomorrow goes so quickly, it is just a one-hour practice section,

:41:30.:41:37.

session, and then you are in to qualifying. Christian Horner, we saw

:41:38.:41:46.

you on the pit wall looking pretty happy, are you as happy as you look?

:41:47.:41:53.

We are always happy. No, I think it has been a positive day for us. We

:41:54.:41:58.

have worked through our programme, had a good look at the tyres, which

:41:59.:42:03.

seem to be fairly contrasting, but it has been a positive day. Just

:42:04.:42:08.

talk us through those tyres, because it looked like a lot of graining was

:42:09.:42:11.

going on, and they are not going to last very long, especially on the

:42:12.:42:16.

front left. It is quite aggressive on the front left around it is the

:42:17.:42:22.

opposite of Korea, very similar but the opposite way around. Tyres will

:42:23.:42:30.

be playing a key role in this race. We will be doing our homework this

:42:31.:42:35.

afternoon, having a look at the two compounds, and making strategy

:42:36.:42:39.

choices for Sunday. Will it be challenging on Sunday because of

:42:40.:42:55.

that? Yes, you probably could not have two more diametrically opposed

:42:56.:42:56.

tyres. Do you still believe Sebastian Vettel can win his fourth

:42:57.:43:00.

straight World Championship here? We are not really thinking about that.

:43:01.:43:04.

Our focus is very much on the race. We have got ourselves into a great

:43:05.:43:08.

position in the championships, but we are focused on getting the most

:43:09.:43:13.

out of this weekend, and then, the Championship tables, they will take

:43:14.:43:17.

care of themselves. Is the main threat Lotus this weekend? Lotus and

:43:18.:43:22.

Ferrari have looked strong. Mercedes certainly will be up there as well.

:43:23.:43:27.

Take your pick. Thanks very much, Christian Horner. Gary, it seems

:43:28.:43:34.

that whilst engines are noisy, tyres are troublesome, so I we expecting

:43:35.:43:38.

more problems for Pirelli? In reality, it is going to be a two

:43:39.:43:42.

stop race. I do not think it is problems for Pirelli. We will see

:43:43.:43:47.

the left front graining after four or five laps. We will see the right

:43:48.:43:51.

front looking a bit horrible, but that is actually rather getting

:43:52.:43:55.

picked up. And when they change the medium tyre, it will be a bit more

:43:56.:44:02.

uniform. But I think the length of life of the soft tyre is going to

:44:03.:44:05.

lead them into a two stop race, for sure. How much will this circuit

:44:06.:44:14.

evolved over the course of the weekend? It does mature as the

:44:15.:44:24.

weekend goes by. But the one thing which will help a little bit is that

:44:25.:44:27.

each driver goes into qualifying with three sets of soft tyres and

:44:28.:44:32.

three sets of medium tyres. They will use the three sets of soft

:44:33.:44:38.

tyres in qualifying, and as the tyre gets more mature, it ends up on

:44:39.:44:42.

Sunday a little bit harder, which makes it a bit more durable, but it

:44:43.:44:47.

is not enough to make it into a one-stop race, I am sure about

:44:48.:44:50.

that. Some drivers were struggling with grip, Amy Raikkonen was the

:44:51.:44:54.

first to have a little spin out on track, tell us what was going on

:44:55.:45:03.

here. Again, with the rear brakes, you are recharging the KERS package

:45:04.:45:07.

as you come into the corner, and it is very easy to overload the rear

:45:08.:45:10.

tyre. You are coming up a blind hill, trying to turn into the apex

:45:11.:45:14.

which you cannot see until the last minute. It is no big problem, it is

:45:15.:45:20.

just one of those situations where it is better to do it on Friday in

:45:21.:45:24.

practice than it is on Sunday afternoon. Now is the time to make

:45:25.:45:30.

mistakes. Sadly, someone who made a mistake quite recently, and again

:45:31.:45:34.

today, were the Williams team, with their wheel nuts. Yes, we saw it

:45:35.:45:40.

going out of the pits, and the next thing we saw was a right front wheel

:45:41.:45:45.

nut coming off. It goes on to the brake caliper, cutting through the

:45:46.:45:52.

rim itself. There is supposed to be a safety device to stop this

:45:53.:45:56.

happening. A sickly, that wheel nuts would not be able to fall off. --

:45:57.:46:05.

basically. That was the real problem. It should not be able to

:46:06.:46:11.

fall off. They had a rear wheel coming off, and they got fined

:46:12.:46:15.

60,000 euros. This time, it was not the rear wheel, but it was the wheel

:46:16.:46:20.

nut. This is the Red Bull garage, and we can see on the end of the

:46:21.:46:24.

axle, these little toggles which stick out, they are sprung loaded,

:46:25.:46:28.

and when you put the wheel nut on there, they come back out, so the

:46:29.:46:33.

wheel nut, if it comes off, it should jam up behind those little

:46:34.:46:37.

toggles. This came into existence because of Mark Webber having the

:46:38.:46:41.

wheel nut coming off in the pit lane and heating a cameraman. It is a

:46:42.:46:45.

safety requirement, and Williams seem to be not complying with the

:46:46.:46:49.

regulation. Lets see what Mark Webber had to say.

:46:50.:46:56.

Well, Mark, one and two in both sessions today. How did you see it?

:46:57.:47:02.

We are going OK on long and shortish runs. Normal stuff on Friday. We can

:47:03.:47:06.

talk as much as we want, but it is the race that counts. Yeah, we have

:47:07.:47:10.

got some work to do tonight. Last year it was a one stop race. On

:47:11.:47:14.

the evidence of today, do you think we are going to see something

:47:15.:47:18.

different on Sunday? It is not impossible. Can you enlighten us

:47:19.:47:23.

anymore? There was a lot of graining on the softer of the two compounds?

:47:24.:47:35.

Yes, we are having to go through everything. Practise is different to

:47:36.:47:39.

the race. The one stop can come into play, but who knows until race day

:47:40.:47:45.

We have to go with the pack, the pace which hopefully is us and we

:47:46.:47:49.

can control the race from there. This racetrack isn't used much

:47:50.:47:53.

during the year. Talk us through the race conditions today? Better than

:47:54.:47:58.

last year and the previous years. The pit lane was in better shape so

:47:59.:48:04.

we could get down to descent work today. The track conditions were

:48:05.:48:08.

pretty good. Mark Webber's biggest problem will

:48:09.:48:12.

be Sebastian Vettel. Sebastian Vettel for the win? Yes, I think so.

:48:13.:48:16.

The Mercedes won't be far away. Thank you. If we take a look around.

:48:17.:48:25.

What's Charles Pic's brother. He is in the support race. It is not all

:48:26.:48:29.

about Formula One, but it is about Formula One on the BBC this weekend.

:48:30.:48:33.

You can see free practise three with me on BBC Two at 6.25am.

:48:34.:48:44.

If you are feeling lazy, we cater for you too. There is a replay.

:48:45.:48:51.

Sebastian Vettel certainly dealt the first blows today. Thanks for

:48:52.:48:53.

watching. Bye-bye.
