Race number 12, Monza. This is Formula One.

Hello and welcome to the Italian Grand Prix. This is the home race of

the oldest surviving racing team, the most accessible, and indeed the

most glamorous. To make one man's dreams a reality

was not easy. But we knew it would be beautiful. Ascari's baby brought

to reality. The quest for perfection has never stop. Evolution, not

revolution. It's time developing, growing, evolving. -- each time.

Success was not always easy. The shapes and designs changed. But the

name always stay the same. Historic beauty and speed, always speed.

Rising again and again, to the top. Designed and built with passion and

love for more than 60 years, this is more than a car. This is a religion

for my people. When you finally see the famous red machine, there are no

words to describe... Forza Ferrari. Bellissima.

It has just started to rain. I know you want the excitement of it

all. But I want to see a drive race. -- dry race.

David, this is a real racers' circuit.

If it rains, we are going to get more excitement looking ahead of the

race. 220 mph down into big stocks and chicanes, it is one of the

circuits that makes you feel alive. The car can float around. Very

impressive. We are going to see qualifying in a

minute. It is a way of life here. It is like a sea of red. It is a

shrine. People are devoted to the place. You see them going with

emblems of the circuit edged out. You rarely see that anywhere else.

The history, the passion, the excitement of this place is

everywhere to be seen. You can see it in town in the evening.

Talk about going crazy, Daniel Ricciardo must be going crazy

because finally he has the contract in his hand. He is the real winner

this weekend. He can't keep his smile back. He started in a lowly

HRT. They promoted him into the Toro Rosso team, and now he is going to

be Sebastian Vettel's team-mate next year. A 11 Australia, because they

have replaced Mark Webber with Daniel Ricciardo, another icon. -- a

double victory for Australia. Monza is the place to be.

So, the championship looks like this. Sebastian Vettel arrives with

a 46 points gap on the home favourite. Lewis Hamilton, last

year's Victor, has 12 points to make up. Red Bull are commanding the

table. They have a lead of 77 over Mercedes. 301 point ah available

with eight races to go. -- 301 point ah available.

Yesterday was very surprising. Lewis Hamilton went off at

Parabolica and damaged the car. Next time, he was blocked by Adrian

Sutil. That is the worst I have driven for

a long time. I am sorry for the team. Did Sutil impede you?Yes.

Nothing I can do about it. Ferrari's plans to get a tow for

Felipe Massa did not go well. Hulkenberg often struggles to get

into the top ten. His best qualifying this season had been

nine. So it was a shock to him. Into Q3, I was not thinking about a

top three finish. We were fighting for six or seven.

Mark Webber got his best ever qualifying in Monza, but it was

Vettel who put in a faultless lap and took his fourth pole position of

the season. There have been years where we have

had a great car but not one that was competitive in downforce races. We

have been up and down. This year, it is more up.

I think he was. He is doing a fantastic job. He has hardly put a

First time in ten races you are going to have to do a sprint or a

walk. You are not on the front row. We lost time with Nico in the

morning. This track is all about confidence with the car. He did a

great job with what he managed. We had a problem with Lewis's car. The

floor was damaged. Even without the problems, we would not have done

much better. Sergio Perez, last year he finished

second. Lewis is starting in 12th. Something similar?

I am here with Hulkenberg. What can I hope something similar. We are not

challenging the Red Bulls and the Ferraris. We have got to be

realistic. But we can get points. It would be good to have somebody in

front to give you DRS. But even without, we should survive.

It might be a wet race. It is starting to spit. The grey clouds

have come over the pit lane which has been busy this morning. The

latest now from Tom. It has been very busy. The work

sharp end of the grid. Red Bull happen working on the gearboxes of

both cars. They have changed the dog rings on fourth, fifth, sixth and

seventh gears. They could prove there was damage to the originals.

Ferrari, Felipe Massa has a new engine. McLaren are still working on

the fuel system of Jenson Button's car. There is a problem there,

diagnosed an hour ago. It is going to be touch and go used to --

let's go back to yesterday. It stemmed from the tow that didn't

work. We had Alonso on the radio, and this is what we heard.

If he wasn't a double world champion and driving Ferrari, he could be

sacked. It is not the first time he has been reprimanded. We have been

told that nobody is as great as the team of Ferrari. It applies to every

team. It is not a good life at the moment in Ferrari.

Ten minutes later, Alonso was ready for the race and full of joy. The

boss of Ferrari, it difficult man to get hold of, but somebody managed to

have a chat with him yesterday. I you happy with Ferrari? Yes and

no. Yes because we are still on the top. Last year we did well in

Brazil. Ferrari is always on the top. I'm not so happy because I want

to win. What was the motivation for you

saying no driver can ever be as great as Ferrari, the name and the

brand? With all of the respect of the

drivers, we have got, in our history, the best drivers in the

world, Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher. I think Ferrari remains

in the past. Alonso, particularly in the race, is

one of the best drivers I have ever seen. Particularly now it is

difficult. He is quick and able to read the race.

I am reading most of the Italian papers... Don't do it too much!

They believe Alonso has too much control. How do you react?

It is not correct. When you have a jive alike Alonso, you have to put

him in the best condition to win. -- a driver like Alonso. This is

racing. We win together, we lose together.

And you are open to your drivers? Will you look at other drivers?

We have Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, di Resta. I have seen similar names.

Now we will think carefully. We don't have a gang here to decide.

After Monza, this would be something to decide. Can you win here this

weekend? It is possible. The race is always

tough. If we win, I think it is very important to go outside Europe and

That was a rare interview from the Ferrari chairman. They said they

would decide next week. You feel that it has already been decided? I

think it has been. It is probably use for people here that he will

make this decision and inform his team on Wednesday or Thursday and

hopefully the press will be advised at that stage. It does appear that

interesting for McLaren if they can be great for McLaren to get onto the

podium. This is a very special week for them, celebrating their 50th

anniversary and all week they have been doing. In 1953, Bruce McLaren

started this and there have been big Rogers and a team of vintage drivers

to mark their very illustrious history.

It is never easy, winning the World Championship is never easy. You need

to have a very good team that can push you with clever tactics. Great

Mika Hakkinen, just a few minutes ago, Jenson Button was all fixed and

was because I am a fan of the sport and I grew up watching those cars,

car was not a winning car but the the fastest I have ever driven. My

smoothness of that one. We went out on intermediate tyres, we were just

hopping on some slick is -- hopping on intermediate tyres, we were just

on some slick tyres. -- popping. We have those conditions here in Monza.

And as it continues to drizzle, it is an easier decision and for those

who don't normally compete for victory, you will take the gamble

and if you have a chap in chip battle on your hands, it is

different so it will be interesting. -- Championship. Fernando Alonso,

going back and Lewis Hamilton. 1988, you and Mika Hakkinen took McLaren

to the Constructors' Championship title. Doesn't mean much? The

Constructors' chap in chip? -- Championship. It means more now, you

played your part as a team member just like every engineer and

designer, they can all lay claim to be part of that World Championship

winning team. And as a driver, you want that World Championship

alongside your own. And they came up short but it is an amazing team

effort, Formula One, and we always focus on the drivers but there are

60 people who come and in many cases several hundred people involved in

making a winning car for that driver. We can just see shots of

Lewis Hamilton in the garage and yesterday he was publicly beating

himself up with separately about his mistake on that Parabolica which he

felt ruined his qualifying session. When you are in that mindset, what

do you have to do to get ready for the race the next day? He will have

do you have to do to get ready for had the support of his team, Ross is

a very experienced man in Formula One and he knows how to bring

drivers back in line. Lewis Hamilton had the best record in qualifying,

never out of the top ten. He is peerless when it comes to qualifying

and that is why he has been so hard on himself, having felt he did not

get onto the pace. It was a bit rubbish, really, in many respects

but if you look at the quality he has got hammered this is an

opportunity. He is at his best with instinctive racing. You will see

Lewis Hamilton going forward this afternoon. He can move forward here,

we saw this last year with Perez and we can certainly see this with Lewis

Hamilton. They should be rubbing their hands,

thinking, we have got an opportunity. This is a historic race

venue and he is coming through the field. Where is he going to do it?

Is he going to wait for the pit stops? I suspect he will go off the

line and sniff out the opportunities right from the lights going out.

Do you think it was frustration because he knows how important this

race is in terms of the championship? I don't think it is

about the championship. They were hoping they could win a race of two.

They have supposed that Microsoft passed their expectations. -- they

have surpassed expectations. He has taken his experience to Mercedes.

Nico and Lewis are strong together. As points stand, he is ahead of Nico

in the championship. It is about doing the best you can behind the

wheel. He doesn't need to lay himself bare as much as he does

about the media. It is looking dry enough, though.

It is. A bit patchy in places. They will need to be careful on the

curbs. But it is a slick looking start.

You always have to have your wits about you. But you are on the portal

for, what, three quarters of the track?

-- the throttle. There is low downforce here. You

have got speed and the car twitching.

Talking of twitching, let's see what Eddie has got worse.

I thought I had Sebastian Vettel but he is in conversation. This is a

tricky situation. These are tense moments. This is the last thing you

want as a driver, to be fighting with the conditions. We have just

been telling the viewers about the conditions. What was the difference

between the slick tyres and the intermediate? Some part of the track

is dry and other parts are wet. Were talking about the best choice. It

looks like there is not so much rain coming in the nest couple of

minutes. So, yeah. The wet stays a while. Is it a thing

for you? It is dry there.I don't believe it! First time ever! We wish

you the world. What you qualified with was sensational. Let's see if

you can turn this into a race win. We go to go and have a word with his

team-mate. This is the last race in Europe as a grumpy driver. -- Grand

Prix of. He has got all the Australian TV crews and all the

supporters. Mark is a real favourite with everybody. He is very

amenable. In fact, he is right up side Christian Horner. I will see if

I keep well behaved and can get near to him. The paint on the circuit is

often the most difficult. It is slippery. We will try to catch Mark

for one second. Conditions, what is your feeling?

I looked at the slick on the second and third lap. The track looks dry.

I think people will go for slicks. You had a strong qualifying. How

nice would it be to exit your Grand Prix career in Europe with a win at

Monza? It would be a highlight. We have work to do but there is no

reason why because put together a tidy Grand Prix. This one would be

incredibly special. I'm aiming for the bubbly.

I know there are so many people in Australia wishing you luck. You have

got a lot in England as well. We have cornered Christian Horner. Is

it a tense time for you? What did you tell the drivers? As we know, it

is tight down there. I said they should give each other space. No

doubt they will. The weather is a factor. It is a long way down to the

first turn. We have to be conscious of our guys and the guys behind. As

always, the best of luck. We have got a couple of people... We are

going to see the sensation of yesterday's qualifying, Nico

Hulkenberg. He was amazing. We will try to get close to him. Naturally,

we are going to see where he is. A big queue, I understand. I'm going

were thinking about six or seventh. To come away with third was a real

did. It is such a professional sport. I have been a lifelong fan.

Red Bull did so well yesterday, which was brilliant. The feeling of

being in sports arenas is awesome. There is no better place than Monza.

We are going to go slightly back. Felipe Massa qualified yesterday,

which was a turn up for the books. I am going to do stop you. -- doorstop

view. We saw you in Monaco. You are becoming a fan. I am a fan. These

guys have embraced me. The wheels becoming a fan. I am a fan. These

are the same as my Kit car 30 years ago! It is a fast track. And you are

a rock and roll person. How is your band going? We will be in London on

today. Will people be doing one-stop? Two stops are slower. It

puts you in traffic. The top ten cars start with a medium tyre and

then go to the hard. From 11 backwards, they can start with what

they want. If it rains, they can go directly to wet tyres.

In terms of grip, well, we haven't got time to talk about it. Let's

look at what it takes to get a perfect lap. We are on board with

Sebastian Vettel. Qualifying for the Italian Grand

Prix, it is one of the longest serving race tracks on the calendar.

speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour. We join Sebastian Vettel on

his way to pole position. He brakes down to the first chicane. Nice and

tidy as he aligns the car. Interestingly, choosing not to use

his KERS at this part of the lap. This used to be the scene of

difficult times for the drivers. Huge braking into the second

chicane. A small locked up as he goes through the first apex. A small

correction for oversteer as he runs out to 50. You heard the late shift

is second gear. He is now on the run down under the old Bridge. That is

where the history of this track was made. Beautifully tidy, all the way

through. Hardly using any of the circuit on the exit as he now picks

the line of least resistance on the run down to Parabolica. Deploying

his KERS as he runs down here. He is in a non-DRS You saw the chequered

flag there. He was the last man across the line. His 40th pole

position. There you have it. Fantastic

qualifying by Red Bull. Hello, Eddie. Nice to be back!

They have a low downforce setup. If Eddie. Nice to be back!

it rains come it will be slippery. As long as the tyres are up to

temperature, it will not be too bad. If it rains before the start, it

will be dodgy. It is getting warmer. It is a Red

Bull lock out on the front row. Can anybody take them on? Only moments

until we find out. Welcome to Italy.

The quest for perfection is never stopped. Anything can happen.

Almost Hayden from view by the trees in one quarter of this park lies the

fastest circuit in Formula One. Race 12 out of 19 this year takes place

in a venue that has hosted every single Italian Grand Prix except for

one since 1950. Today, it concludes the European season, and is a launch

pad for the globetrotting third part of the Championship and offers a

challenge. For flat-out sections interrupted by two tight chicanes,

one swipe -- sweeping bend and some knife edge right-handers. Drag might

be further reduced in the DRS own knife edge right-handers. Drag might

but for the madly passionate Ferrari fans, the race to the first corner

will be key. Fernando Alonso is a knowledge is one of the test on the

opening lap but he starts in fifth and to have any chance of

challenging Red Bull, he will need every element of his fast starting

skills. That is a very good point and you get high speed before

approaching the first chicane, 600 metres from pole position and both

Randall Alonso and Sebastian Vettel have not lost any positions this

season. Sebastian will hope that stays this afternoon. Felipe Massa

as I qualified Fernando Alonso despite doing his best to help them.

But Lewis Hamilton, his worst qualifying for a very long time. Six

races he got through to Q3 but he will still be fighting. Let's look

at that grid. Sebastian Vettel, his fourth pole position, alongside Mark

Webber. Nico Hulkenberg, an excellent performance, and Felipe

Massa, then Fernando Alonso in fifth position, Nico Rosberg, who should

be able to make his presence felt. Daniel Ricciardo hummer Sergio

Perez, outqualifying his team-mate. And Johnny -- Jean-Eric Vergne

followed by Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton, done in 12th position. The

other leaders, Grosjean, then Pastor Maldonado and behind him, Paul di

Resta, he has good year is next door. Adrian Sutil. -- Gutierrez.

Van der Garde is just ahead of Charles Pic and the grid is

completed by Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton. This is how those cars will

great careers, I wonder if Mark Webber will put that to rights?

Sebastian Vettel is just driving so brilliantly. Five wins so far, three

of the last five. Mark Webber has won more races from second place

than pole position. Historically, he has not made good starts. TEAM

RADIO: We understand if the compromise on the opening lap, we

can go back later on. Kimi Raikkonen compromise on the opening lap, we

has also made that choice, harder compound. The rest set their lap

time on the softer tyres. Gary, you talked about the weather in

changeable meaning that perhaps those outside the top ten would go

for those harder tyres but Kimi Raikkonen and Hamilton have gone for

it. Grosjean and Maldonado, starting on intermediate tyres. It does not

look like it will be very heavy rain today, perhaps a little shower.

Normally a one-stop race and the medium tyres are better than last

year. You must remember that Perez came from 12th place all the way to

second last. The weather is looking reasonably bright? And getting quite

hot. We had that cloud hanging over this morning but it could stay dry

for quite a while. We are expecting this morning but it could stay dry

one stop this afternoon. Do you really see anybody being able to

take this battle to read old? Not on a straightforward fight. There is no

love lost between these two men. At first corner can suck you in. It can

cause problems. Lewis Hamilton in third place after that last grand

prix in Belgium, where Kimi Raikkonen suffered his first

non-finish since returning to Formula One. Never forget, there are

other battles, between Force India and McLaren in the Constructors'

Championship, McLaren grabbed fifth place but they are only four points

ahead of Force India. And this is new, the thermal camera on board

with Paul di Resta and those collars on this front tyres indicate how hot

we are getting so you get very little on the straight but into that

corner... You can see which ever tyre is more noted, going Orange. If

we see that later, remember Paul di Resta, that image was going down

towards Variante Ascari. It was black, no heat at all. In the

running speed in the race, they will contain that tyre temperature. TEAM

RADIO: Remember your procedures. To burn outs. -- two. That was his data

engineer. He is just going through procedures. They should know that

well. You stick to those procedures. Lewis Hamilton has been told to keep

the steering wheel as straight as possible and defend if you have to

but keep things straight. Every little piece of resistance creates

friction and you lose speed so when trying to get that car plus the

weight of fuel on board, that is a lot of weight to try to get off the

line. Hulkenberg from third place, Felipe Massa, then Fernando Alonso

and Rosberg. Adrian Sutil is further back than he

would have liked. Kidron and Marussia, moving into position. --

There is front wing damage, which car? It looked like Ferrari.One of

those McLaren cars, across the kerb. Perez in trouble. Fernando Alonso,

still on the attack, I've Inc is weighing looked OK. Sebastian Vettel

leaves, then Felipe Massa. -- his front wing looked OK. There was a

very visible lock up as he ran into that first corner. Lewis Hamilton in

12th place, Grosjean further back. We will keep an eye on that. As they

come around on this first lap, everybody jostling for position.

Jules Bianchi has made a good start. everybody jostling for position.

Paul di Resta is out already. His front wing has gone and damaged

releases pension. -- damage to his suspension. Hulkenberg has dropped

down to fifth race. And the attack from Kimi Raikkonen but Hamilton can

defend. Is he heading to the pits? New front wing. Kimi Raikkonen

usually manages to stay out of trouble. You can see the damage.

What is going on behind? Felipe Massa holding onto that second

place. Grosjean and Adrian Sutil... Some contact with Williams and that

is Gutierrez getting involved. That was brave stuff around the outside

of that first chicane. He is also under attack and sell. Pastor

Maldonado, trying to get anything out of this race. Baldry Bartos,

having to watch right, Charles Pic... -- watch out. Maldonado not

giving it up. They stop -- structural online to Variante

Ascari. -- store to run down. -- start. Webber and Alonso, good

rivals and friends. And for the second race in succession, Paul di

Resta watches from the sidelines. That is a horrible way to end the

race so early. Sebastian Vettel with the fastest lap in the early stages.

Mark Webber has got that covered. On board with Fernando Alonso. He can

see his team-mate a head of Mark Webber and he can see Sebastian

see his team-mate a head of Mark Vettel in front. He comes through.

Can he go around? Almost on the grass. He has done it! Fernando

Alonso goes around the outside of Mark Webber! That was incredible. I

think Mark Webber has sustained damage to his front wing. Let's have

a look at that. They did have contact on that corner, did he clip

his wing? Fernando Alonso just touching the front wing of Mark

Webber. It will be interesting to see what effect that has on his

front downforce. Mark Webber might be struggling. We could see Perez

going through. TEAM RADIO: Concentrate on the race, this is

good. Felipe Massa being talked through. Hamilton is in 10th place.

Grosjean in 12th place and then Adrian Sutil. Gutierrez in 14th as

they go across the line once more and Sebastian Vettel opening up that

advantage. Hamilton in 10th place as a battle continues between red bowl

and Ferrari. It is interesting with Hamilton being on those trying

tyres. What sort of progress can he make? It is slightly better than the

option. Less than a 10th of a lap. We can see Hulkenberg being swamped.

And there is visible distance to that first corner and we can see

that lock up from Sebastian Vettel and Perez taking that escape road.

He just goes across the grass and trying to imagine where he would

have been had he gone through that corner normally to avoid that

penalty. On board with Kimi Raikkonen. He launched past McLaren

and Jenson Button. To the outside. Is it at this point? Locks up. And

that is why Perez was like a scuttle. He was rear ended by Kimi

Raikkonen. Let us look at what happened. Trying to find his slot.

He locks up. You can see the bodywork coming. Hamilton decides

not to mix it through the chicane. He did not gain any is Asian. And we

have that contact with Grosjean and Paul di Resta. Paul di Resta locked

up. Look at that. TEAM RADIO: He just locked the front. Who did he

hit? He said he just locked the front so he is admitting a mistake

on this occasion. That is very rare from Paul di Resta. But he has put

He is the fastest car on the track. I doubt he can go all the way to the

end of the race. He will have done some laps on the hard tyres. He will

go as far as he can, but presumably they will turn it into a two stop

race. Vettel leads the race. Felipe Massa dropped back a bit. Hulkenberg

is still up there in fifth. For Sauber, it is about scoring a few

points today. Rosberg is still in sixth. Ricky Andrew, Perez, and

Hamilton intent. -- Ricciardo. You can see him applying pressure to

Jean-Eric Vergne. Hamilton was fastest of all in the

first sector. TEAM RADIO: Lewis, we cannot hear you.

A bit of a problem if they can't communicate with him. I assume they

have two switch -- they have to switch. Every time a driver makes an

adjustment of the steering wheel, whether it is a differential or an

engine mode, it pops up on the tell a tree. -- telemetry.

Hamilton has Button behind him. The Brits are on the outskirts of the

top ten. They are trying to deal with Jean-Eric Vergne. TEAM RADIO:

That is right. Let some fresh air and energy pass through the side. --

The engineers have told him it is turbulent from other cars. In

practice, you don't run around in turbulence. You can see the battle

between Boston and Hamilton. Raikkonen has been told to avoid any

branded tyre. You would think the tension would ease off. But often

reason. He has gone wide at Parabolica. That would have allowed

Hamilton to get into the slipstream. The Toro Rossos have been quick.

Alonso moves on to second place. Ferrari are running second and

third. I wish we had a bit more response. Alonso is on the chase of

Vettel. Can he do anything about the gap? Look at Hamilton! He has got

Vettel. Can he do anything about the past Jean-Eric Vergne. But where is

Vettel. Can he do anything about the Jenson Button? Oh, no, Perez. We

were getting excited over the wrong battle. Sorry, it was Rosberg we

It is getting confusing. Ricciardo is running with Rosberg. Hamilton

goes defensive, to the outside. So he moves up into 10th place. In a

way to go in this race. -- a long way. You have got Jean-Eric Vergne,

Jenson Button tucked in behind him. And there is a Romain Grosjean, in

therefore the fun and games as well. Bianchi and Max Chilton are still

running. Raikkonen is last of the track. We have lost one car. That

was Paul di Resta. The other Force India missed the chicane, that was

Adrian Sutil. Lotus are looking past Grosjean.

Hamilton has got a bit of time as he gets on with his battle with Jenson

Button. They know it is not good. Once you have got a flat spot, if

you had any issues under rotation in the braking zones, it tends to find

the flat spot and keep working away at the difficulties you have.

Several years ago, Raikkonen's suspension exploded thanks to a flat

spot. The level of vibration, you lose visibility when you have a flat

spot. Your eyeballs are shaking in your head. That might explain why it

Vettel is being kept honest here by Alonso. He is pulling away, but not

expecting when we looked at the practice times.

pods. Riding with Lewis Hamilton as he tries to close the gap to Jenson

Button. Button won the race last year. It looked like it could be a

McLaren double victory last time. Thankfully, they had a fuel system

problem into this race but they were able to fix it. But in's car looks

in good shape. -- Jenson Button's car. Look at the lead Vettel has

over Alonso. There is Felipe Massa. He still got a decent gap between

him and Hulkenberg. Behind Jenson Button is Lewis Hamilton. Grosjean

is behind them. You can see the wing on that Mercedes vibrating from side

to side. That radio message, typically we get

them delayed. For whatever reason, maybe it is the communication issue

we had then described earlier, Hamilton didn't pit. He has a slow

puncture. I was wondering why they would bring

him in so early. That is why. It is not going very well in the race. He

started on a hard tyre. It is sliding around a bit in the

background. You saw him getting a bit out of shape. He has dropped

back from Jenson Button. Is he able to bring the car back to the pits

safely? There he is, in the background, still trying to keep

Romain Grosjean behind him. I was just mentioning how the rear

wing, on the way down to Parabolica, was vibrating side to side on the

end plates. Distances presumably being given to

Alonso there. We expect to see Lewis Hamilton coming into the pits. The

race leader is not heading in. But there is a similar lack lap time

from him. -- a similar lap time. I wonder what is going on. Unless they

have put a special fluid in that tyre, I don't know how you can

correct a slow puncture. TEAM RADIO: Box, box, Pitt confirmed.

He cannot hear them. That is the problem. They are waiting for him,

he is in the pit lane, and he is doing another lap. Tom, have you

heard anything? I haven't heard any more. It is extraordinary to see the

Mercedes team around their box. Normally they get the message eight

seconds beforehand. They have been out for two minutes. It is

extraordinary. They are twiddling their thumbs. The tyres are there in

their warmers, waiting. They are going to have to react if they seem

coming down the pit lane. Back to the old-fashioned way, with the pit

board. People often ask, why do they have a man out there with plastic

numbers when they have all this technology? It because exactly when

you have this technology failures. In he comes. He has got the

message. He will switch from his hard compound tyres to the medium

compound. He didn't seems to lose too much.

Another message being given there. Not sure what was written on the

front of it. On the back it says, no fuel. I suspect that is a message

for the mechanics when they are working on the cards. Maybe he has

written something on there. I don't know if Tom Court sight of that.

Jenson Button is still chasing down Jean-Eric Vergne. The Toro Rosso is

fast in a straight line. No denying that Vettel is beginning to make a

bit more of a gap. Felipe Massa is still in third. Webber is in fourth

position. Grosjean is in 11th. What the other Lotus? Raikkonen had to

make an early stop and he is now out there 19th.

Radio reset. They will be going for the default. That front wing

endplate damage, he is certainly not going as quickly as Sebastian

Vettel. He is nine seconds behind going as quickly as Sebastian

the leader, losing time, of course, in the air that has been dispelled

from the back of the Ferrari. Mark Webber not struggling as much as he

might have been doing. Felipe Massa still sending him off. Mark Webber

has never been on the podium here at Monza. What a way to finish his last

Formula One grand prix at this circuit, if you can get back into

the top three. And problems for Jean-Eric Vergne, coasting to the

side of the track. And that will have released Jenson Button into

10th place. We cannot see the problem, Jenson Button was passing

him. Some tell-tale smoke. That looks like engine failure. He turns

into the corner and you can see that smoke being blown from the left-hand

side. It could be hydraulic, of course. We will find out in time.

That was a good weekend so far for Toro Rosso. That brings Grosjean

into 10th place. Real disappointment for Jean-Eric Vergne. Whether that

is hydraulics or engine, running at 70% full throttle around this

circuit so it is tough on the engines. We will have another look

at Lewis Hamilton and his pit stop. Let's look at that replay. He brings

the car in. Stocks on his marks. That could be the reset signal. What

I love is that is his old school, written with a felt tip. I wonder if

he picked that up. He was quickly adjusting something on his steering

wheel so I think he got the message. Lewis Hamilton has rejoined in 18

position. These straights are very long and he could have filled his

time between corners. Kimi Raikkonen had to make that early stop so the

question is, can Lewis Hamilton get through? It is very early to have to

make a stop but they will be monitoring that. Why is his red

make a stop but they will be light flashing? It has been doing

that since the beginning. That only happens when the driver sets his

intermediate setting, it flashes like that. Fernando Alonso, his pace

is slower than Sebastian Vettel. 6.5 seconds, the gap. On board with

Sebastian Vettel. Let us listen and watch the maestro at work. His front

right looks OK, and that is Jean-Eric Vergne with his very

expensive race car steaming behind him. That is the fifth time this

season he has not finished, he had rear suspension failure last year at

the first chicane, he went flying through spectacularly. Meanwhile,

Rosberg has been told that through spectacularly. Meanwhile,

Hulkenberg is reporting that his rear tyres are beginning to go. That

will give him a boost. So that is a chance, perhaps, for the first

Mercedes to move up on that young German, Hulkenberg. Sebastian Vettel

goes across the line. Another quick lap. Matched by Fernando Alonso but

he is a long way further back. That will be registered with the team and

if Sebastian is trying to manage a particular issue, that light

flashing could indicate he has had to make some adjustment in the cock

that. That would only be triggered normally when you change tyres.

Because you have a different circumference with wet tyres that

raises the car. They will need to reset the tyres and reset all of

those distances for all of those electronic sensors. Read will have

to make some changes to their gearbox. That was due to some

damage. Let us try and track that. Grosjean, getting wide coming out of

that second chicane. He continues to keep the pressure on. On board with

Felipe Massa. Getting some information, he can try to counter

the threat from Mark Webber behind. Mark Webber had a spin on that

section last year. We can see Hulkenberg, Rosberg and further

back, once again, Ricciardo and Perez. Kimi Raikkonen recently set

the fastest lap. He is on a very different strategy to everybody

else. Both Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton have had to make much

earlier pit stops? Much earlier, two stops is ten seconds slower but

there is ten seconds slower but the resulting they can do about that. I

cannot see these tyres going for the 38 laps they might need. They have

to drive accordingly and commit to that. With Kimi Raikkonen making his

stop on the first lap, he has come at in front of Hamilton, who stopped

much later. He did not have any of that traffic from the start of the

grand prix and losing time to the benefit of being at the front is you

run at a run pace whereas Hamilton was running below his pace to work

through the traffic so Kimi Raikkonen will have to stop again to

make it back. In reality, Kimi Raikkonen has gone on to medium so

he can do 52 lap on the faster tyres. He has got the faster

opportunity. It is more durable but slower. Kimi Raikkonen is in 15th

place with Hamilton behind. Six seconds behind them. We can see

Sebastian Vettel, his rear light is flashing, is there any reason why he

Sebastian Vettel, his rear light is might have triggered that? Normally

what happens is you have a button on the steering wheel to put the car

into wet tyres mode. I am confused because he should be on dry tyres.

It is strange. That last radio message was Fernando Alonso asking

the team, what is going on? Why is his rear light operating like that.

--? TEAM RADIO: Push like hill! Hulkenberg being told to push. Just

an update as to that message, it said RS modes, just one of those

settings. We are talking about strategy. It is worth mentioning

that the last thing the teams want is to start trying to do one stop

and then aborting because it is that strategy mix-up that cost Red Bull

Barcelona. They were trying to do three stops and ended up doing

forced up and they dropped behind Ferrari and finished in fourth and

fifth place. This is the crucial point. That window is opening for

two stops. We would expect the point. That window is opening for

one-stop people to be going deeper. We are going to see some pit stops

producing. Webber, Felipe Massa, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, then Daniel

Ricciardo, chased by Sergio Perez. Grosjean has come into the pits. Let

us watch his stop. Battling away with Jenson Button in the early part

of this race. Brand-new set of hard tyres and he eventually gets going.

That was not the kind of pit stop we normally expect to see. Out the pit

lane. That is another valuable chunk of time lost. His qualifying not go

well and he had a problem Kimi Raikkonen making contact with Perez

at the start of this grand prix. And they have had a relatively slow pit

stop. It is looking like this might be a weekend to forget. TEAM RADIO:

Grosjean has had a very poor pit stop. Jenson Button will be

responding to that. He is 2.2 seconds behind his team-mate, Perez.

McLaren. Felipe Massa is still in third place, backing onto

themselves. Neither of them are coming in. And that gap has reduced

slightly upfront. TEAM RADIO: Box is this lap. That is a very quick

change of plan from McLaren. No doubt, he should be easily out in

front of Grosjean. Given his problem. That looks much sweeter.

Three seconds. This is right in that one-stop window and Lewis Hamilton

is just behind Hamilton. His team-mate is a couple of seconds

seconds and that is down to 5.7 so first and second place was about 6.5

Sebastian Vettel at this point in the race. Sebastian Vettel reaching

the end of the usable life on this tyres and Fernando Alonso is coming

alive. That is his best lap of the race, so far. Where will Perez come

out in relation to his team-mate? Button heading towards Parabolica.

He is on his way. Let us see if Toro Rosso have turned things around?

Button heading down the straight. Perez is just going to come out in

front? No, Jenson Button has gained the advantage. That looked like a

very slow stop for Perez. Tom, what did you see? There was a problem

with both front tyres. You must remember that is it is very fickle

to get the new tyres on these front wheels because the front wing is in

the way and both were slow. -- difficult. Sebastian Vettel is

coming in and that will put him in with Perez once he has completed

this. That will actually put him out in front of Adrian Sutil. Lap 24

from 53. And you can see Mark Webber behind Sebastian Vettel. The camera

is mounted onto the gantry. Very behind Sebastian Vettel. The camera

quick stop for both of them. 2.6 seconds. Add 2.7. That is right down

at the bottom end of what is achievable. Mark Webber, out in

front of Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi achievable. Mark Webber, out in

Raikkonen made that very pit stop in this race. Presumably, he will have

to make another and he has squeezed out in front. They will be pleased

about that, leading track position over Lotus. That is the visible

damage with that overtake by Fernando Alonso. There is no top

part to that end plate. Slick work from Red Bull. TEAM RADIO: It is

hard to speak German... Speak German. They will have to learn to

speak Italian! He stays out. Fernando Alonso is a race leader.

Ferrari leads. But will this work-out as we go further into this

race? Sebastian Vettel is on fresh tyres and Felipe Massa is into the

pits. Another one who has not stopped is Rosberg, who moves into

second place. What a different story it is with Mercedes. They can go

longer. Hulkenberg also into the pits. He was in fifth position. Let

us see where they can come out relative to Red Bull. Mark Webber is

going to go past Felipe Massa. Of course, he was battling with him.

Kimi Raikkonen behind as well and Hulkenberg locking up. As Valtteri

Bottas heads into that first corner. Just in front of Williams. That

keeps him just in front. The Ferrari had to react to the pit stop.

Crucially, Felipe Massa's stop was slower than Webber.

Lewis Hamilton is at the back of this group, trying to get past

Bottas. He has not yet made his pit stop. We are waiting to see when he

comes in. Alonso and Rosberg, we are still waiting for those two. Here

comes Hamilton, trying to come up the inside. He has to back out in

the end. You can only go past there if you have a massive speed

advantage over the car in front. Now he has got the tone. Will he make

the move? Or will he save it? Alonso has stayed out. Vettel has just done

a 27.5, so, one second faster. That means that five seconds or so gap

that we saw before the start is going to be more than that by the

time we see Alonso coming in to change tyres.

Hamilton has been given some clear air again. He continues in ninth

place. Vettel is the first of those who has stopped. Gutierrez has moved

into fourth, having not stopped. Webber is in a good position. Alonso

will be ahead of him. We are at half distance in this Grand Prix. Alonso

is charging but doesn't seems to have an answer for Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel has done a quick lap. He is running in third place on the row,

Vettel. The two Marussias are running through. There is Sebastian

Vettel. The gap is 17.9 seconds. You lose around 25 seconds from a pit

stop here at Monza. We can hear a translation of what

was said to Alonso. It is, let's stay calm. Let's do some greens.

That means the green sector. The Ferrari team are just trying to calm

Fernando Alonso. Rosberg is in the pits at the

moment. We will keep an eye on where he comes out in the order. He was

battling the likes of Ricciardo earlier. Jenson Button is currently

behind Ricciardo. Then Perez is behind both of them. That will be

fascinating to see if Rosberg comes out of the middle of the group.

Vettel has done a 1: 27.8, a second per lap faster at this stage.

Looks like some blistering on the front right tyre. Let's try to get a

close up of that. That could be due to the high rolling resistance that

they see when approaching 340 calamitous per hour. No surprise to

see him coming injuring the flat. -- 340 kilometres per hour.

Joining us from the pit wall as Alonso comes in, and no doubt

watching as closely as we are, if the team principal of Red Bull,

Christian Horner. Your guys put in a tremendous pair of stops. But

Ferrari have much you. Both teams performing Briley in the pit lane.

-- Ferrari have matched you. Both teams performing brilliantly in the

pit lane. A fantastic team performance today.

How much do you see this threat from Alonso? He has come out in front of

Mark Webber. Do you think Webber has got the pace to get in front of the

Ferrari? It is going to be tough to get ahead of the Ferrari. We are

going to take the fight to them. Still a long way to go. Any sign of

rain coming before the end of this Grand Prix? I hope not! At the

moment they are saying no. But it changes quickly. Hopefully it will

be all right. And the loss of performance with the

damage to the front wing, it is not enough that he will change it? No.

We had some damage like this in Montreal. It is not a massive

effect. It upsets the balance, but he is still able to do a good pace.

Interesting, the contrast. They started with two different compounds

of tyres. The difference is less windy tyres are scrubbed. This

afternoon, the message the engineer was giving was fairly clear. They

are aiming not to stop again. A podium potential at the end of this

race. Nico Hulkenberg is tucked in behind Raikkonen. We expect him to

have to make another stop at some point. We think he will have to stop

again at some point in order to get to the end of this Grand Prix. He

has done four lapse on that tyre. Kimi Raikkonen has not on 27 on his

medium compound tyre. They are well past their best. -- Kimi Raikkonen

has now done 27. past their best. -- Kimi Raikkonen

The information the teams had with suggest the medium had a life

expectancy of 25 laps. That information usually gets better

during a Grand Prix. It is cooler now that it was during practice.

More rubber is on the track. As you go into the Grand Prix, you are

burning 2.5 kilos of fuel per lap. The predictions are always on, based

on information you had at the time. As the weekend goes on, it improves.

On board with Nico Hulkenberg here as he chases Kimi Raikkonen. TEAM

RADIO: Lewis is quicker than the cars in front. You can use him if

RADIO: Lewis is quicker than the you want.

They are all trying to use tactics a bit here. Rosberg tried to use the

tone from the drivers ahead. -- the tone.

They will go for the softer tyre again. He is pushing.He knew he was

coming in. Here comes Kimi Raikkonen. Where will this bring him

coming in. Here comes Kimi back out? That is going to be

coming in. Here comes Kimi interesting to see. Hamilton has

just set the fastest lap again. They momentary delay to move the car

away. That has cost him a second game. A stationary stop as we can

see Hamilton is tucked in behind Hulkenberg. Sauber 's defensive into

the shower came -- Sauber goes defensive into the chicane. We do

think that Hamilton is going to have to do another stop in this race.

Let's just see what happens. Looking at the use of the KERS, Hamilton is

in the DRS zone. Gary, Kimi Raikkonen had to make the second

stop, which we knew he would have to do. How far do we think we can get

on those tyres? GARY ANDERSON: He is go to have to do the rest of the

race. Hamilton is committed to doing go to have to do the rest of the

the best job he can. He has come out in front of

Maldonado. Lewis Hamilton is now trying to pick up. He has got the

DRS in operation. Is he going to be close enough into the first turn? He

is thinking about it. Hulkenberg... He has gone wide and Hamilton has a

chance to cut back on the exit. They are having a big battle. It reminds

us of Brazil last year when Hulkenberg was leading the Grand

Prix. Hulkenberg was slow out of the chicane.

Nico is running a good race. Just going back to the leaders' pit

stops. Vettel pitted and then Ferrari brought Felipe Massa into

the pits. It is a strange thing for Ferrari to do.

We will have to look at that one later on. That was the past that

Hamilton made on Hulkenberg. It puts him into fifth place. He has done

some 18 laps on these medium compound tyres. We are on lap 33

note -- now come out of 53. Grosjean is in 11th. Gutierrez is

being urged to be quicker through the scurry chicane. An insider was

telling me that Gutierrez was, if anything, from practice, quicker

than Hulkenberg. He is being urged to be quicker in that section of the

track. An interesting battle here between

the McLaren drivers. We have seen that a couple of times this year.

Perez, when he was striving for Sauber, he will do his utmost to get

past Jenson Button. Let's hope they keep it clean. TEAM RADIO: Be aware,

Lewis took over Hulkenberg by using full KERS. That explains how rapid

Hamilton was out of the chicane. That is one of the things that makes

it to GDP interesting. Lewis decided to deploy all 80 horsepower. -- that

makes it so interesting. He have to make a decision. -- he had to. Lewis

went for gold. It just came in. Upfront, Sebastian Vettel leads the

race. The gap between him and Alonzo is 11.1 seconds. Vettel has a

comfortable margin at this stage. It is over ten seconds. Webber is still

in third place, a second behind Alonso. It is Red Bull first and

third, sandwiching the Ferrari of Alonso, then the other Ferrari

Felipe Massa. Hamilton is up to fifth. But we think he is due

another pit stop to get to the end of the race.

Almost identical times there. TEAM RADIO: Last lap, perfectly on

target. 20 laps to go, Nico. Button was out of shape there. They

are being hunted down a bit by Grosjean. Looking at Alonzo and

Webber, Webber is not quite in the DRS zone. Once weather is in the --

once Webber is in that window, if he can get within a second, he will

gain three off four tense per lap. Hulkenberg has been told not to

worry about Hamilton but he has two worry about Rosberg and he is

catching very quickly. Upfront, you can see that Alonso is lapping as

quickly if not more quickly than Sebastian Vettel but he is a long

way behind and I very much doubt that Sebastian Vettel will allow

that gap to reduce significantly. Marussia, getting out of shape. He

said his tyres were still at stage one, indicating they are under

control. No concerns on this particular set of tyres. Will

Rosberg size this up? Chasing after Hulkenberg. Sauber, with that

Ferrari engine, there were five Ferrari powered car is in the top

ten after qualifying and we would have expected Mercedes to be very

ten after qualifying and we would strong at Monza, great record in the

past. It does not look as though it will be happening for them this

weekend. Ahead of them, Lewis Hamilton bearing down on Max Chilton

and then Jules Bianchi, Charles Pic is still... Rosberg goes straight

down the escape road and rejoins! And he has lost a huge amount of

ground. Hamilton? No, Rosberg. Yellow gloves. He has gone past Max

Chilton and Hulkenberg, relief for him after that mistake from Rosberg.

he did not want to risk that. On-board, through the first Curva di

Lesmos. Just that quick shot of that youngster being touted as a driver

for Sauber next. 18 years old when he starts, if it happens, but he

will have to get his licence to make that happen. Gutierrez, being urged

to make some progress and Ricciardo is not far up the road. Gutierrez

has the sixth fastest lap so far and the other Sauber driver doing a good

job and that rookie has not scored any points this year. Is there any

chance of squeezing into the top ten? That is a tall order. Mercedes

get ready for Hamilton. Rosberg is on that conventional one-stop

strategy but Hamilton is heading into the pits. Hulkenberg gets

between. They are getting ready for him and he did not, and they have to

head back into the pits. It might have been to force a stop. It is

probably that radio problem, he was not looking at the pit board? You

are always looking at the pits would, that is the fail-safe if

anything else goes wrong. That is one of those long straights. They

can occasionally come out and tried to force the hand of their

competitors. They might have been trying to scare Ferrari into some

reaction. Perez still chasing after Jenson Button but Romain Grosjean

was also catching so Lotus has got closer to the back of that group.

Adrian Sutil in 13th place, then Kimi Raikkonen. Maldonado is if team

Chilton. TEAM RADIO: Box, box, confirm. They hope that system has

worked but it does not seem to be effective. He has gone past again so

Hamilton, once again... With the lack of radio communication, that is

race continues. Lap 39. The lead is still 11 seconds for Sebastian

Vettel. Hamilton comes in. Where will this bring him back at? And

what kind of battle will he have in the remainder of this race? That was

a good stop. 3.2 seconds, not the best we have seen. Ferrari and Red

Bull have been stronger. Behind Kimi Raikkonen. He will have to do that

all again. Kimi Raikkonen has that amazing record, finishing so many

races in the points but it will be difficult this afternoon, in 14th,

races in the points but it will be but still a reasonable distance to

go. They both have been forced into two stops. One-stop was quicker.

Mark Webber has pulled up to the back of Fernando Alonso, sitting in

that gap of about 1.2 seconds and he is closer. He is in the Di Resta

own. -- DRS zone. TEAM RADIO: People have been doing 27 laps on these

tyres, no problem. Sticking with one stop. Fernando Alonso gets a very

good drive off Parabolica and you can clearly see the rear wing, DRS

is open. Opening and closing like a letterbox. Gets in behind Fernando

Alonso. Will that we close enough? Too far back. Strategically, he can

use his KERS. He might have a little late dive but he would be brave to

do that with Alonso. They are both equally experienced in Formula One.

Fernando Alonso squeezed him off on that first chicane. They are both as

hard as nails, no doubt about that. Kimi Raikkonen has just said the

fastest lap, in 13th position. Trying to climb up the order. Kimi

Raikkonen is behind Adrian Sutil, then three seconds before

Gutierrez. Kimi Raikkonen will be charging for the remainder of this

race, as will Hamilton, who is 2.5 seconds behind Kimi Raikkonen as

they tried to get into the top ten. Rosberg is tucked behind Hulkenberg.

He made that mistake and that dropped him seven seconds behind

Sauber. Hulkenberg against Rosberg for fifth position is still very

much on. Hulkenberg would love to for fifth position is still very

finish there, that would be their first -- best position of the

season. Vettel, Alonso and Webber, all on hard tyres. TEAM RADIO: We

have an issue. We need to shift onto low gears. Why does this always

have an issue. We need to shift onto happen to Mark Webber? Something...

driver mode! What is unique about that exit? There is no real big use

of KERS, there. They have to keep the same ratio before going into the

for him. That cost him some time. They looked like it had been

triggered by him not figuring out where his pit was. Mark will be

If you are in second gear, the gearbox is selecting third so you

have to make that your selection so that you don't have any drop in

talk. -- torgue. TEAM RADIO: Keep it clean, keep it clean. And in the

background, Ferrari. Tom? This is two stops. The leaders would be

stopping night, but Pirelli tell me that one-stop will be OK, they have

told me that they have looked at those cars and it is not a problem

told me that they have looked at and that is due to this track

temperature being about 10 degrees cooler than on Friday, when they did

this in relation run. It looks like a clean run to the end for the men

middle of that group, battling with Adrian Sutil. Adrian Sutil manages

Gutierrez. TEAM RADIO: Short shift. Still problems or Mark Webber with

his gearbox. This is very much for position, Hamilton having made two

stops, as has Kimi Raikkonen, both charging through the field and

Hamilton on fresh tyres, even more so than Kimi Raikkonen. Lewis

Hamilton has the freshest. He has an opportunity for some overtaking

manoeuvres and there is no better man when he is in this mood. And

there is no more conscientious driver than Kimi Raikkonen, asking

if it was OK the way that he past Gutierrez. TEAM RADIO: Short shift

only on red lights, five and six. Mark Webber is getting that message

from second and third. Second chicane as well. They can get away

with running third through the second of the Curva di Lesmos. Kimi

Raikkonen has gone ahead of them. Side-by-side, Adrian Sutil keeps in

behind. And Hamilton has got last Kimi Raikkonen. His KERS use has

dropped away through that apex. They switch it off leaving that turn.

Here is the replay. He has to make the choice. He decides to go left

and carries that overspeed. Very straightforward. We can see Dani

Pedrosa. MotoGP rider. He obviously approves. Hamilton catching Kimi

Raikkonen. Hamilton on fresh tyres catching Kimi Raikkonen as we get

into the final eight lap of this catching Kimi Raikkonen as we get

Italian Grand Prix. And they might not be fighting for the win because

Sebastian Vettel has got a very big advantage. 11.5 seconds Rumford and

Alonso. -- 11.5 seconds from Fernando Alonso. And he takes Adrian

Sutil at Parabolica. Lewis Hamilton will try to do exactly the same with

DRS. Grosjean! Getting past Jenson Button! The other looked as is going

to place. Can Hamilton get past Adrian Sutil? Adrian Sutil defending

as he can. He impeded Hamilton in qualifying yesterday. They used to

be friends! That is quite a tussle. Will there be enough space? He gets

around the outside. And in the end, well, not that much resistance.

Great action, here. We always see great racing on this circuit. Adrian

Sutil has to give it up. He had a great result in 2009.

If they finish where they are now, Vettel would of course open his lead

in the championship. TEAM RADIO: We need to short shift to dear three to

finish the race. -- third gear. How easy is it for him? He wants the

second place from Alonso. But he has got to be patient. Let's listen. He

is listening to the message. He wants to finish. You can see it

costs you acceleration. Painful, painful for Mark Webber. He has a

chance of finishing second in his last ever it had in Grand Prix. To

be on the podium would be very special. -- last ever it has yet

Grand Prix. A few drivers are having KERS problems.

We know that Raikkonen has been nursing a fuel issue. He has been

told not to overlap his throttle and break early in the race. He has been

getting several messages saying they are over target, which means they

would have enough you will to finish at full power. -- enough fuel. They

have not been able to use the full performance from the car.

Both of them are a second or so quicker than the cars ahead of them.

They could get into the points here today. Webber crosses the line.

It is really starting to drag on the circuit. I'd been noticed that

earlier. The damage is getting worse as the load pushed down through the

front wing. Webber could end up in a Ferrari

sandwich. There is normally a bit of salami in a Ferrari sandwich!

They do have a KERS problem. Raikkonen just managed to defend

from Lewis Hamilton there. You can see the KERS indicator on the

graphic. Not much is happening on Raikkonen's car, but stuff is

happening on Hamilton's car. What is that, about 10% of KERS available.

Hamilton has just under 50% KERS. He uses eight used. -- a boost. It can

only be a matter of time. Raikkonen has got Perez just in front of him.

Both McLaren cars are in the top ten. We are getting into the latter

stages of the race. Raikkonen, it appears, has got a KERS problem.

Hamilton has used the last of his KERS. He will get DRS as he goes

across the line. He goes to the inside. Hamilton is on the outside

with additional speed! Very late on the brakes, and, oh, just get out of

it and Raikkonen stays in front of Hamilton. He knows that resistance

is futile. If he has a KERS issue, it is only a matter of time. Great

that he is taking it as far as he can with Hamilton. They just lost a

bit of time compared to what they had been doing. Grosjean just read a

bit wide. He is bearing down on Ricciardo four sevenths. There could

be another change to go. Vettel leads. Hulkenberg in fifth. We are

concentrating on the lower end of the top ten. That is where it is all

happening. TEAM RADIO: Come on, boy. Felipe Massa still being given that

happening. TEAM RADIO: Come on, boy. encouragement by his engineer. An

opportunity for Hamilton in the background. Perez is having a go at

his own team-mate. Raikkonen is with Hamilton. He still can't quite do

it. Has Hamilton got some KERS left? He sweeps around the outside!

He works and is beautifully. He saved his KERS, as he did earlier

past Kimi Raikkonen. Now he's chasing the McLarens.

He will cause some mischief among them. You can see they are right in

front of him. Raikkonen goes to the inside. Perez did not look like that

was a proper attempt. You saw a lock up. It affects the angle he can

leave. Hamilton gets through before the tight part. A round of applause

indeed. It has been such a clean battle, so

Hamilton draws alongside the McLaren. This is to get into the

points... It has not been ideal. He is down the inside. A bit of traffic

ahead. He just managed to squeeze past and no Hamilton will go chasing

after Jenson Button. -- now Hamilton. They just got out of the

way sufficiently. Bianchi and Max Chilton are still

running at the lower end of the order. It looks like neither of the

Williams are going to be in the points. Webber is only 0.8 seconds

behind Alonso. I wonder whether Alonso could actually help his

team-mate, Felipe Massa. He is getting pressure. If he can allow

Felipe Massa to get closer, they can get two from Rorys on the podium

this afternoon. -- two Ferraris. McLaren against Mercedes. He goes to

the inside. Jenson Button doesn't even try to defend on the inside. It

is straightforward for Lewis Hamilton. He has gained another

position. He is up into ninth position. Still were McLaren in the

points. Raikkonen isn't too far behind. Button didn't have the

benefit of anybody in front to open behind. Button didn't have the

his DRS, which is why he didn't defend on the first part of the

straight. The momentum the Mercedes had meant there was nothing Jenson

Button could do. It looks like it is going to be difficult for Felipe

Massa now. The couple of Ferraris on the podium is starting to look

pickled. It is looking like a walk in the park for Vettel. -- starting

to look difficult. That is close for second. Felipe

Massa is 2.1 seconds behind. There is Raikkonen going past Perez. He

needs to try to get past the other McLaren. Oh, this is going to be

hard for McLaren if they lose any chance of a point at the end. He has

got DRS but he might be too far away to get a double move and make

So much faster than Grosjean in front. Well over a second and a half

faster. Look at Perez coming back on front. Well over a second and a half

Raikkonen. He goes to what will be the outside as they come to the

What Hamilton is chasing here is seventh. He is taking chunks of time

out of those guys. We are on the last lap for Vettel

now. It is a quick Grand Prix on the fastest track in Formula One. TEAM

RADIO: Just bring it home, OK? We have got enough issues.

We don't need you to chase fastest lap, that is what they are saying.

It has been a very untroubled time. We are keeping an eye on Hamilton.

He has got a great chance. He is behind remaining grows gene. Daniel

Ricciardo is leading the group. -- behind remaining grows gene. Daniel

the behind remaining Grosjean. He tucked in behind the Lotus.

Grosjean will be aware of the Silver machine filling his mirrors. Into

the pits as come Adrian Sutil. A retirement. Hamilton goes to the

outside! He tries to go round the outside! He will have to give the

place up. He does so. Ten out of ten for effort. But he just locked up

and could not make it stick. Looks like it mate -- might release for

Ricciardo. Coming through to win the Italian Grand Prix, it is Sebastian

Vettel. His sixth win this year and his third at Monza, where he started

his amazing career with a victory in 2008. Alonso takes second, Webber is

third. Mark gets his first ever podium here at Monza. Hamilton

hasn't given up on getting past Grosjean. But he has got to do it in

the last corner. Can he work it? Use the KERS? I don't think you can do

it. Ricciardo finishes in seventh. Grosjean holds on for eighth.

Hamilton is ninth. Who gets the final point? It is Jenson Button. He

fends off Raikkonen to the flag. Kimi Raikkonen fails to score once

again after a non-finish last time. He comes to an early stop last time

-- as well. You can see the relief on their

faces. TEAM RADIO: Fantastic, Sebastian! You have won the Italian

Grand Prix again! Job, mate. Yes! Very good. Good race. Thank you.

Bull's 40th win after your 50th pole yesterday. Good come isn't it?

Amazing. It is a fantastic result. Both tribes did what they needed to

today. We had an issue. -- both strikers. -- drivers.

Does this mean we are going to see more of this through the rest of the

season? The ones we are supposed to be weak

at we keep winning. We will see. It has been a fantastic weekend for us

to win at one of these historic venues. It is a massive result for

us. Many congratulations, a superb result. The first and third form Red

Bull. Thank you. Alonso finishes in

second. Another solid podium. He always racks the results up. Vettel

wins from Alonso and Webber. Hulkenberg, a strong fifth. He

fended off a strong Rosberg right to the end. Jenson Button get the final

Gutierrez. The Williams pair, nowhere near the points. Charles Pic

won the younger drivers' battle. We lost Paul di Resta. He had an

accident. No such troubles for Sebastian Vettel. That is now his

32nd career victory, which means he has matched Alonso in terms of

career wins. That will be painful to has matched Alonso in terms of

the Spaniard, double champion, but the red old machine has been so

mighty over the last few seasons. Ever since 2009, after these

regulations, they were beaten that year by Jenson Button, going on to

win the title, but since then, it has been all about Sebastian Vettel,

winner at the circuit where he started his winning sequence back in

2008. Fernando Alonso comes over to congratulate him, nice gesture. Mark

Webber stopped elsewhere on the circuit. They stopped along with

Kimi Raikkonen just passed the exit of the pit lane. This double width

area. He will be walking back among the fans and you get all of these

people. He almost looked tearful and I was much if it was a relief

because that issue with Sebastian 's car. He mentioned gearbox.One man

does not do everything, of course, but he has been a leader of men to

help focus their minds. Incredible record in Formula One. He is a

visionary in terms of design and he can see the car come from concept.

And he has done that successfully with different teams but it is with

Red Bull. Sebastian Vettel, crossing the line. He allied Fernando Alonso

to get closer but he was always incomplete control of this race. He

won the grand prix in the wet in 2008 when he became the youngest

ever winner in Formula One and he won again in 2011, the year that he

dominated the Championship and he is beginning to look like dominating

2013. He did not dominate at the start of the year but he is on an

amazing sequence of victories. Four wins out of six races. What can you

say about Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull that has not been said already?

Fernando Alonso keeping the fight going. Lovely to see that support,

they have got their man on the podium. The noise is just

tremendous. Mark Webber finally makes it towards the enclosure.

You can certainly see which man Mark Webber is mates with. It was good to

see that hearty handshake with Sebastian. Let's not forget, there

was that damage on the front wing of Mark Webber and he still managed to

deliver. That relationship is coming down. They have made their beds and

they know where he is going in the future. They will not exchange

Christmas cars but it was encouraging to see them looking

happier. Brando Alonso did not seem happy in the briefing room before

taking to the podium but second place at home for Ferrari, that is a

taking to the podium but second good result. It is the result they

needed this weekend. And they will head onto that podium as Sebastian

Vettel collects more silverware but this will be special for Mark Webber

on his last appearance at Monza, and he has never been on this podium

before. It is incredible, elevated over the start-finish and there will

be that sea of fans. The pit lane on the right, that used to be the

start-finish. GERMAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS: "Das Lied Der Deutschen".

The Austrian anthem. His heart is British at Milton Keynes. And the

team will be delighted to have scored that double podium at Monza.

The only previous podium finish they had was that victory that Sebastian

Vettel got in 2011. They have not been on the podium except for that

and this time, as they collect the construct 's Championship trophy,

they can celebrate first and third place and Mark Webber finally gets

that podium at this classic track. -- Constructors' jumping ship.

Webber. Taking that third place. And that is a beautiful end to the

European part of his season in Formula One. Tremendous scenes. Lots

races without points for the former world champion. That is a great

shame. We will find out later about his connection to Ferrari but then

uses that it will be made clear what Ferrari will do with drivers in the

grand prix here at Monza with an Italian team. So it is raised that

Renault. This is one of the toughest tracks that we go to. But this year

the car has been fantastic and the race has been incredible for both of

us. We were struggling with the gearbox so we had to place ourselves

but for me, it was, yes, not that bad because we had that question but

very great to win here and see all of those bans coming. This is the

best podium of the season. Emotion is all about this, isn't it? And the

fact is that Fernando Alonso did a very good drive and he kept you on

the ball. Fantastic? Most people are dressed in red. But there are some

blue hats as well. And those people are very happy. Fernando! Please

explain the overtaking at the start of the race? It was difficult, they

start was OK. We had to overtake Mark Webber and Felipe Massa later

on and then with Sebastian, we were not able to close that gap so we

were fighting with Mark Webber but second place is good to have this

were fighting with Mark Webber but podium ceremony, the most

were fighting with Mark Webber but spectacular podium of the year, for

sure. Hopefully next year we can come back here and earn the top

case. When you made that jump onto the grand stand, it was amazing. It

was very close? It was close, obviously. We have to race, nothing

to lose. We are second in the obviously. We have to race, nothing

Championship and we have to take some risks and we did that. You

understand that Ferrari love you! We are all behind you. Of course! It is

the same thing. Big thanks to the team. For everything that they do

for me and huge support from all of the fans. In deadly, some people

tried to create some tension but will fight for the champion ship

always. You have to fight very hard to go on

the podium from the middle of the race. From outside, it looks like

you had a better speed compared to the beginning. Can you explain how

Prix? The hard tyre was not as comfortable for me. But I felt good

in his case, second place was a remarkable place. I would love to

Always great to have a Ferrari on the podium. Your thoughts after the

race? We tried to do the maximum. It was not enough to beat Vettel. We

knew in the second half of the race that it would be difficult. It was

impossible, almost. We need to go that it would be difficult. It was

back, stay focused, work hard. You are now second. Where are you

with your championship thoughts? Never give up. This is really the

approach we have to give. Why did you bring Felipe Massa in ahead of

Alonso in the pit stop? We thought that Fernando could go a bit longer.

Such a hard-fought race, not that Sebastian Vettel knew anything about

it from the front. He was out there, away, clean. There was plenty going

on throughout the field, which we are going to go through. But the

scenes here, just seeing him give a hug to his boss, he is a huge part

of Red Bull. Smiles from ear to ear. Adrian is a very emotional man. He
