The Spanish Grand Prix - Highlights Formula 1

Hello and welcome to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix. The sun is

shining and it is a perfect day for racing. This is round five of 19.

In a few weeks we will be in Monaco for the next grand-prix. Brazil

will close the show in November. Still a long way to go until

Constructors' Championship. All of race action for you in a moment.

First, the story of qualifying. McLaren came to Spain hoping

upgrades to get them back on track. Jenson Button had his worst

qualifying of the season. His less experienced team-mate, Sergio Perez,

managed his best qualifying. Filipe Massa received a three place grid

penalty. Fernando Alonso could only manage 5th in front of home fans.

Sebastian Vettel has never taken pole position. Not this year either.

Mercedes dominated qualifying again and got their hat-trick of pole

positions, thanks to a great lap from Nico Rosberg. Lewis Hamilton

in second. Can Mercedes luck changed today? Recent experience

has been from pole to 9th. That is not a nice thing - not very

enjoyable. I doubt we can fight for the weigh-in and podium could be

difficult. -- at the winner. Mercedes are not confident of

staying in that position for long. Romain Grosjean, Mark Webber and

this season. Pastor Maldonado is Now for the race. Lights Out! A way

we go up! Fernando Alonso on the outside. Keke Rosberg in the lead.

Sebastian Vettel is trying to make it three wind. He splits the

Mercedes. -- 3 Y eight. Round the outside goes Fernando Alonso. He is

trying to get Hamilton as well. That is amazing. Brilliant stuff

from Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. It looked like a car moved

early. I will look forward to seeing the replay. Did Fernando

Alonso get more than just a great start? The pressure is put on Nico

Rosberg. He will have wanted to have his team-mate behind him. He

cannot push. We saw on the free practice sessions. When they pushed,

but tyres went off the end of the clef will start Mercedes have been

front of the Ferrari of Filipe Massa. Adrian Sutil has come up to

on the move. He is in 6th position. A great opening lap. A long way to

go in this season but Fernando Alonso has made his ultimate dream

has a fatherly voice. A great relationship between driver and

engineer. Kimi Raikkonen not so happy with the start of his race.

He is damned to 5th place. He is chasing you as Hamilton. A shield

Bianchi got a bit of a damage on the front wing. -- jewels Bianchi.

Here is a running 21st. Keke Rosberg leads. They are bunching up

together. Nicky Rosberg is not able to extend the advantage. They're

keeping it bunched up. That means there will be multiple DRS cars

available. That will come at the end of the next lap. They will be

able to activate DRS. But it might be more difficult on this circuit

than others. Coming in to turn nine, that is a high-speed corner. Let's

quickly run you through the Border Force de Keke Rosberg is in the

lead. -- the order. Keke Rosberg it is in the lead. As a bunch up now,

getting closer and closer this lead group will start Romain Grosjean is

in 9th. Mark Webber is up to 11th. Daniel Ricciardo is in 13th. Pastor

Maldonado and Esteban Gutierrez in 16th. Contrasting styles. Sebastian

Vettel is running very wide before and cutting back. Really important

to look after the left rear. They are looking after the tyres already.

Nicky Rosberg is leading this race. He will be so aware of that. He was

not close enough to attack. In the background, you have Sergio Perez

chased by Adrian Sutil. You can see the Williams going through. Out

what happened to Valtteri Bottas? He has dropped some time. Maybe

what caught my eye was that Filipe Massa had such a flyer compared

with Mark Webber. Everyone reacted clearly to the light. Fernando

Alonso had to go to the outside. Lock up from Lewis Hamilton as he

ran into the first corner. Whether that affects the performance of the

car remains to be seen. He gets on the outside of the Lotus. Brave

stuff! It is fantastic to watch these world-class drivers go wheel

to wheel. He is amazing on the first lap. He has led the last two

Grand Prix on the first lap. Neither from pole position. Initial

reaction was good. It was the second phase at the start. Lewis

Hamilton picks up the slipstream. Look for the Markup on the brakes!

There was contact with Sebastian Vettel as he went into Turn One. A

kiss between professionals does not make any damage to the car.

Fernando Alonso is going to the right, then left her. He is running

in three. He is not getting the slipstream. He is losing out by not

having a car in front of him. He cuts back and then catches the

Lotus. He probably did not expect to go around the outside in three.

When the opportunity was there, he took it. On board with Kimi

Raikkonen. He is chasing Lewis Hamilton. Filipe Massa is close -

not close enough I think to challenge - as we come into Turn

One. Just listen to them through three. Hear that! It has to lift

out massively when you are running at this phase of the Grand Prix.

1:29.7 is the fastest of the race. Sid and again the slower than

qualifying. Still this gap developing between Fernando Alonso

and Lewis Hamilton. -- significantly slower than

qualifying. The gap to Sergio Perez has closed a bit. Then at Adrian

Sutil in the Force India. Romain Grosjean in the other Lotus. Mark

Webber is still outside the top 10, in elevens. An attack from Kimi

Raikkonen. That has moved him up into 4th place. Lewis Hamilton was

harder on his tyres in free practice. He was not able to drive

the car on the limit of getting out of rubber. They are surely going

for four stops with Mark Webber. They are trying to get him out of

traffic. And over steel bike Kimi Raikkonen. -- and oversteer by Kimi

Raikkonen. Fernando Alonso sitting in third. A brand new set of hard

tyres going on board the car of Mark Webber. You'd think he would

be it on a four stop strategy. Maybe some will stretch it to three.

For the Benassi is put in Lewis Hamilton under pressure. -- Filipe

Massa his putting Lewis Hamilton under pressure. We need to push

early in this stint. Confirmation of the four stop strategy. Making

that decision early it puts Mark Webber second last. He should be

able to pass those guys relatively easily. When you are in the mid-

grid area, he will start to lose some performance. Filipe Massa has

gone round the outside of Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton is trying

to defend but Filipe Massa has taken 5th place. I wonder how long

they will keep Lewis Hamilton out there. He has been told to think

about brake balance. That lock up in to Turn One of A Macro cannot

help. Ferrari are getting ready for a pit stop. -- 10 one cannot help.

The Force India has been very kind on its tyres. They have gone for a

relatively early stop. A hard tyre is going on the Ferrari. Maybe they

could make it three stops. A mistake from a Williams driver.

Pastor Maldonado nearly stopped in the wrong place. Wondering what a

difference 12 months makes! Damaged to Romain Grosjean. He has damage

on his car - the right rear. He is coming into the pits. Is that the

failure on track? Force India has a very long stop. Is it memories of

Malaysia when they had those horrible pit stop problems?

Whatever it is, it is not good. in Aberu Kebede teams battling for

points. It looks to be all over for Romain Grosjean. -- two teams.

There is Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Sutil has come back out onto the

track. I think they have managed to send him on his way once again.

Hamilton. Incomes Fernando Alonso into the pits. A straight forward

stop. Back out on a hard tyres. Lewis Hamilton is in as well, as is

Paul di Resta and Jean-Eric Vergne baling early. We saw Jenson Button

locking up into the first corner. He is not having a happy run. It is --

Romain Grosjean's first non-finish of the season. The back end let go

on him. These are the top two, Nico Rosberg against Sebastian Vettel,

neither has been in the pits yet. They will both be in this lap.

are into the pits, lap ten. This is the battle of the pit teams. Nico

Rosberg should be able to come out in position. It is a quick stop. It

will be close. They are going to be very tight. They just about manage

to get Nico Rosberg in front. 2.8 seconds Nico Rosberg. Fernando

Alonso is on the outside, the Ferrari will split them, he has

gained a place from Sebastian Vettel, but look at the support! He

is having a go at getting past the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg. He is

under pressure from Fernando Alonso. Brilliant stuff, he made good use of

the fresh tyres. He has been pretty fast, getting his nose in there so

far this grand prix. Somewhere around this lap, Nico Rosberg will

be wise to it. There is only so much that you can defend. Felipe Massa is

not far behind. Kimi Raikkonen is chasing down. This is a move from

for Pastor Maldonado. He was bleeding in the pit lane and taking

a strange line. -- speeding in the pitlane. Nico Rosberg is in the lead

of this group. He takes over the lead of this race, he crosses the

line ahead, chased by Fernando Alonso will stop then by Sebastian

Vettel. It is very close between this top group. Further back, Lewis

Hamilton is way down the pack. Coming out of the pits, Jenson

Button. He comes out in 15th place. Fernando Alonso is weaving around, a

much tighter line. Will he try the inside? Nico Rosberg is wise to it.

He is having to go defensive. are on board with Nico Rosberg. They

are coming up to the second DRS zone. Up through the ninth corner.

No change on the rear wing of Nico Rosberg's car, because he is the

lead car. You can see it working for Fernando Alonso. Not enough space on

the straight, and look at how close Felipe Massa is, and Kimi Raikkonen

joining in. Mark Webber is in seventh place, with Sergio Perez in

eighth place. Lewis Hamilton is down in 10th place. The Mercedes opens a

gap every time when you come out of the last turn. That is crucial.

Fernando Alonso is closer than the last lap, but he is losing time.

That might keep Nico Rosberg in clean air. The Spaniard is going for

the lead, and he is ahead! He gets past the Mercedes! Look at the

response from the fans! Their man is in front. The Ferrari is working

well on both compounds of Tyre. Nico Rosberg is struggling here. Great

stuff. Bernie Ecclestone said Fernando Alonso for the win. It is a

long way to go, but he is looking fast. Sebastian Vettel attacking,

Esteban Gutierrez is leading the race... Sebastian Vettel gets past

Nico Rosberg. In effect, this is second place, because Esteban

Gutierrez will make a pit stop soon. He is just ahead in the Sauber.

Felipe Massa looking for a bit of action. The Sebastian Vettel pass

would have had him using his KERS. He went strategic, that is an

example of how you can deploy the horsepower that is available from

KERS and use it anywhere on the lab. Riding on board with Kimi Raikkonen.

Esteban Gutierrez is in, so Fernando Alonso leads from Sebastian Vettel.

Felipe Massa moves up into third place. Nico Rosberg under attack

from Kimi Raikkonen. Paul di Resta is in eighth place. Lewis Hamilton

moves up to ninth place. This was the overtake. Nico Rosberg goes

defensive, and the speed for such a difference. He was the fastest man

of all in qualifying. They have set the car up for straight line speed.

His mechanics cheering. This is Felipe Massa getting past Nico

Rosberg as well. He dealt with it nicely. This race is not over. Kimi

Raikkonen is on the medium compound tyre, but all of the others around

him are on the hard compound tyres. He is close enough, side-by-side,

Kimi Raikkonen takes the place, he gets past Nico Rosberg, moving him

up into fourth place. A different strategy being used by Lotus. Can he

start to close the gap to Felipe Massa? Fernando Alonso has a 1.6

second advantage over Sebastian Vettel. RADIO: Look after your

tyres, the last five laps of the ones that matter. Indeed, it could

come down to that. That is the over speed that is available when you

have the DRS open. There is no point picking up dust on your tyres. You

can hear the limiter, just under 200 mph. RADIO: I have problems...

Understood. Box at the end of this lap. Felipe Massa will be coming in

at the end of this lap. He has got some sort of difficulty. Daniel

Ricciardo is flying at the moment, in eighth place, but he has caught

Sergio Perez ahead of him. Kimi Raikkonen has been catching Felipe

Massa, so it is interesting to watch that. You can see the left front

tire, it is really grained. It is not too big a drama, because it will

happen. The problem is the driver does not like to see that, because

it does not boost the confidence. Thank you, Gary. The Ferrari crew

are ready in the pitlane. Felipe Massa brings the Ferrari into the

pits. It is a short run, 11 or 12 laps on that set of tyres will stop

the is going to be going on to another set of the hard tyres. I

wonder if there was another problem there, but that is a short stint.

The tyres are so fragile... Mark Webber is coming in as well. His lap

times were too far away. Once you get in a situation with the tyres

but they have fallen beyond their operating window, you cannot bring

them back again. If you keep them below that point, which is what we

are seeing with Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen

close to them, you can see the effect of managing the tyres.

Esteban Gutierrez in the second Sauber is having a good run. He went

for the long first stint, and it has brought him out behind his

team-mate. Felipe Massa under some pressure from Daniel Ricciardo.

Daniel Ricciardo has got past Sergio Perez and Nico Rosberg, he is

flying. Fernando Alonso is coming in. Felipe Massa has been in the

pits for the other stop. Further back, Lewis Hamilton in eighth

place. Slightly slow for Fernando Alonso. Let's see where it puts him

out. Nico Rosberg has gone through. He will be hoping, by the time he

gets on the back of Nico Rosberg, Nico Rosberg will have decided he

has had enough. It looks like Ferrari might be going for four

stops. RADIO: The wheels or something! OK, try to make it back.

That will be a shameful Giedo van der Garde. He is the second of the

young teams group. That is not a good thing. Fernando Alonso, there

he goes, and Felipe Massa is in the background. He started in ninth

place, the gap is seven seconds between the Ferrari's. Then we are

waiting for Sebastian Vettel. At this point, they have all made two

stops. At this stage, they are even Stevens, but red Bull are trying to

make 1-stop less, we think. Fernando Alonso is one second a lap faster

than Sebastian Vettel. Effectively, Fernando Alonso can get an extra

stop for free. Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne are on slightly

Valtteri Bottas is still running. RADIO: I have been overtaken by a

Williams! He did not sound impressed by that. That is not what he was

expecting. We are on board with Lewis Hamilton. He is battling with

runners, you might as well have some fun battling. This is him going past

Pastor Maldonado. A fairly straightforward pass, but you do not

see overtaking there that often. DRS open on Kimi Raikkonen's car. It

becomes more demanding to try to overtake there. They are both

Renault powered cars. RADIO: I cannot drive any slower! That hurts.

It does, it is such a shame. Kimi Raikkonen closing up. I thought he

might even have a chance to get through. He is going to be very

close. There is no doubt that Sebastian Vettel cannot turn as

something you can look through, looked beyond, loop to the horizon.

If it means it is at the point where it can no longer operate,

they should use the cliff terminology. Kimi Raikkonen pulls

away -- Sebastian Vettel pulled away as they exit. If you want to

know what a Formula One car hitting eight sausage kerb looks like, that

was your moment. Kimi Raikkonen is losing a second a lap on what he

could do. He is desperate to get past as soon as possible. He will

pounds. Sebastian Vettel had an issue. Will Kimi Raikkonen have a

chance to get into five? Sebastian Vettel will need to be defensive.

Once again he drops back quite a wait before being able to open up

the throttle again. Sebastian battle was very wide. -- Sebastian

Vettel. Presumably that is what you're talking about - he is trying

to look after the tyres as much as possible. He is 17.6 seconds behind

the race leader, Fernando Alonso. Next time he will be a full pit

stop behind. It gives Ferrari a I could not work out what it was

all about. He is coming into the pits - Max Chilton. Now Sebastian

Vettel, of course, is likely to pick up the DRS himself. That is

likely to assist him in staying in front of Sebastian Vettel. Filipe

Massa is still in second position. Finance -- Fernando Alonso is still

in the lead. That is better pulled a try to keep it like that. That is

good. Hold it together. -- that is better. The you would expect the

Ferraris would come in in about three more laps. If Fernando Alonso

can hold on and just try and open up the gap to 19, 20 seconds, his

pit crew will get a bit of breathing space. The Act is brave

by Sebastian Vettel. He only gives just enough space. He almost lost a

position and now he will challenge again. He is taking a special line

- trying to look after his tyres. Can he not hit the kerb so much?

Not on the kerb but he gets a touch of wheelspin. The lock up allows

Sebastian Vettel to get another car length. He is still not quite close

enough. So frustrating for Kimi Raikkonen. He is side-by-side with

Sebastian Vettel. He really went for it. That was so late on the

brakes. Great stuff by Sebastian Vettel. In the end, you have to say

that Sebastian Vettel was not sure where he was but left enough of a

car's width and Kimi Raikkonen pounced on it. I did not quite

catch the radio message. I was too excited to shut up on that one, I

am afraid. Maybe someone from home can tweet as it. I did not think he

would go for it. Sebastian Vettel gave him space. I believe the

message was, you have to raise your race - do not over defend and drive

to the tyres you have got. A lot of celebrating Finnish fans outside of

Turn One. This is his third pit stop. There he will need one more.

He goes on to the medium compound tyre. Ferrari are calling the

strategy here. A 3.2 seconds stop - not their best. A set of mediums as

well. The same strategy. They had run these in the first stint of the

race. They have decided to go for the other tyre as the race tyre.

Maybe they have seen what Kimi Raikkonen has done. Out comes

Filipe Massa. Mark Webber in there. There was a great shot. A beautiful

stop. Mark Webber gets on his way once more. The teams practise their

pit stops about 50 times over race weekend. Fernando Alonso is in

second place now he has had his pit stop. The Mercedes pit crew is

there as well. They are going to service their car. They have really

gone backwards in this race. They practise pit stops every single day.

In the case of Mercedes, they have a Formula One car with an electric

engine in and they do their bit for the Environment, drive it around

the workshop, cumin for the pit stop and try it out again. -- come

in. It is brilliant NEC that done so cleanly. Kimi Raikkonen leads

from Fernando Alonso. Remember they both have won more pit stop to go

in this race. -- one. He is still on for a three stop race. Fernando

Alonso is making it a four stop ways. Kimi Raikkonen is cutting

through the traffic and trying to lose as little time as possible.

Fernando Alonso wants to try and use the fresher tyres to find his

way past Kimi Raikkonen. The fastest lap of his race, last time

around. Of course, with both of them having a pit stop, but choice

of tyre will be interesting. We have seen Kimi Raikkonen stick on

the medium compound tyres was that he has not used a hard tyre. --

compound tyres. That was very wide. It looks like a mechanical problem.

We would try to check that out in a moment. Frederick was Jean-Eric

Vergne or Daniel Ricciardo. -- that was. Jean-Eric Vergne not going

where he should be. At the moment he is dropping down the field and

has lost several places. Here comes Fernando Alonso, trying to retake

the lead. It will be a straight forward pass. Fernando Alonso goes

ahead, gets past Kimi Raikkonen and retake the lead in the Spanish

Grand Prix. They both have one pit stop to go. It will come down to

how much Kimi Raikkonen can stay with Fernando Alonso in this stint.

He cannot afford to lose too much time. He is on fresh tyres at this

stage. Use up your tyres, use up your tyres! That is why we are

beginning to see some quicker lap times perhaps. We do not know when

that message was broadcast to the car. Let's see how many laps he

does before coming in. He is also on the medium compound tyre. He has

gone back on to the medium tyre - a new set of those was up there is

Sergio Perez. He is in 9th position. -- set of those. He has had his

best result of the season so far. What will he be able to do on this

one? They are trying to workout, can they get two Ferraris on to the

podium? That would be a great achievement. Filipe Massa started

in 9th place. He had a penalty. this lap, box this lap! This is

pretty early. They are looking at the maximum duration of 19 laps, 20

laps on the hard tyre. Incomes Kimi Raikkonen. Let's just listen. -- in

comes. Just a slight hiccup but not too much time lost a bulldog that

will be a long run to the flag the start -- time lost. Sebastian

Vettel is a few seconds behind. He is being chased. Sebastian Vettel

will be coming back into the pits. Sebastian Vettel will lose more

time when he comes back out of the pits. His car is moving around a

bit. It does not look as if the World Championship leader will be

able to win this race. Kimi Raikkonen is his nearest challenger

in the points. He is 10 points behind. It has not been Sebastian

Vettel's day so far. Can I get him out safely? Lovely! No problem at

all. Fantastic! A fantastic pit stop. Fernando Alonso will come out

knowing that he has the knack -- Filipe Massa said to protect him.

This is working well for Fernando Alonso. It is the final stint of

the Grand Prix. He needs to look after that car and bring it home. I

do not want to tempt fate that he is up for braking the record to

date - of the most number of finishers without a mechanical

failure. All the Ferrari fans are going to kill me for saying that.

Through turned through with a big lift. He is losing a lot of time. -

- turn three. This is not a nice experience. The height of Saturday.

And then... He is 85 seconds behind the leader, Fernando Alonso. That

is a bit of a shopper. Nico Rosberg is in 9th. In Monaco, are we going

to see a huge betrayal of cars trying to get past them? You need

to watch out in Monaco. Somebody might pit early and get the

undercut and then jump them. It backs people up a lot more than you

see in these more open circuits. They have been quick enough to show

the aero crossover. Back at the Spanish Grand Prix, it is all about

Ferrari. At the moment it is. Let's not forget Kimi Raikkonen. Filipe

Massa still has to make his final pit stop. Mark Webber is on his way

again. We knew he was on for it because he was the first into the

pit. Lewis Hamilton is being passed by Jenson Button. That is for 11th

place. Hamilton and Jenson Button, the two former team-mates. They are

fighting down at the bottom end of the top 10. Filipe Massa will go on

the chase of Kimi Raikkonen. Income Sebastian Vettel for his 4th pit-

stop. That is how many pit-stops we have seen a from him. He won in

2011 but he will not win on a four stock raced today. He has not had

that pace. -- stop race today. He does not seem to be under any

pressure from behind. Mark Webber has lost a place to Paul di Resta.

He is yet to make his final pit stops the Mark Webber will come

back up. He has got back past him. Jean-Eric Vergne had the tyre strip.

That is why he is further down than expected. The Toro Rosso is a quick

car. Daniel Ricciardo has just come into the pits. Showing bid pays

from the Toro Rosso. It is Jean- Eric Vergne he is leading the group

of young drivers. We have lost Guido van de Garde a while ago.

Nothing too difficult about that one. The DRS opens and it creates a

massive amount of drag. Almost like he created horsepower. Paul di

Resta still trying to get past Nico Rosberg. He has sat there for a few

laps. He has done 15 laps on those tyres. Always a danger those tyres

will fall of the cliff. Quite a lot of marking on the left front. This

Let's see where he is when they come off the last corner. It is normally

flat out. He is in position, he should be able to hone in on the

back of the Mercedes. He will have to go to the outside. He has erred

on the side of caution. He has got a few laps left. The grandstand

finish! Biding his time until the last moment. Nico Rosberg having to

turn -- having to defend. He is struggling for corner speed. The

tyres have done 16 laps, he should be able to get it to the end, but it

will be slightly nerve wracking. Because Sergio Perez has not got

past Jenson Button, and so hasn't closed the gap, it looks as though

Nico Rosberg might drop one place to seventh, but not any further.

DRS is open. I was getting excited their! A bit too short, that

section. If he gets within the one second window of the Caterham, he

will get DRS, so Paul di Resta might have to wait another lap. We are on

lap 64 out of 66, so Paul di Resta needs to make the move, but it would

be a job and as result. Nico Rosberg will get the DRS now. The rest are

closing -- all the rest is closing up. He might have to find somewhere

else to get past the Mercedes. 63 laps completed. Fernando Alonso is

behind them, he has just crossed the line, so to laps to go. Paul di

Resta is looking for any opportunity. Jenson Button is still

in front of Sergio Perez, Daniel Ricciardo is in front of Esteban

place on folding. How good is Fernando Alonso? How many times do

we say that? He is breathtaking. But he has got a car that is working for

him. Fernando Alonso on home turf, this would be his second victory of

the second -- the Spanish Grand Prix, but he had an emotional

victory at Valencia last year. It was the attacking style on the

opening lap that I loved. He is still attacking. He is getting into

the last lap. Felipe Massa's wife and son. Giving a thumbs up to

daddy. What a day for Ferrari, both cars. The team principal's birthday

this week. 48 years old, a young man leading the team. It looks like two

cars on the podium. A feeling when you know you are near to the

chequered flag, the emotions will be bubbling over. He has got more than

11 seconds, he does not have to do anything dramatic, it is a question

of stroking it home. There is no relaxing until the chequered flag,

they have been around for too long. But solidly, Ferrari are the most

successful team in the Spanish Grand Prix over the years, they have had

11 victories at the various different circuits. Look at the

response from the fans for Fernando Alonso. A bit of smoke from somebody

ahead. No change in the other battles, Paul di Resta is still

behind Nico Rosberg. Sergio Perez is still behind Jenson Button. It looks

like Esteban Gutierrez will miss out on his first point by a fraction of

a second. Adrian Sutil is in 13th, Pastor Maldonado in 14th. Fernando

Alonso making his way around, through the final corner. He is
