Special delivery for Lewis Hamilton, we hope to bring you some

:02:49.:02:54.

first-class racing this weekend. Welcome to qualifying from Barcelona

:02:54.:02:58.

for the Spanish Grand Prix. The sun is shining, the weather is looking

:02:58.:03:03.

good, and we are hoping for some breathtaking action, just like we

:03:03.:03:13.

saw in Bahrain. It is not a great start by Nico

:03:13.:03:20.

Rosberg, Fernando Alonso very quick. Fernando Alonso round the outside,

:03:20.:03:24.

he is going to get at least second here, from Sebastian Vettel.

:03:24.:03:30.

Sebastian Vettel comes back, into the high-speed chicane, he is past

:03:30.:03:40.
:03:40.:03:42.

him. He has done it.They will need to pay to put the DRS rear wing in

:03:42.:03:48.

place. Can they get round safely? He drives him off the circuit! Come

:03:48.:03:58.
:03:58.:03:59.

on! It is broken, he will have to pit again. Sergio Perez goes for it.

:03:59.:04:04.

Don't hit each other, boys! Do they need to fight this hard? It is

:04:04.:04:14.
:04:14.:04:15.

putting them in danger. He has hit him! That was pretty hefty contact.

:04:15.:04:20.

Kimi Raikkonen goes across the marbles. He is second. That was

:04:20.:04:27.

beautiful. Romain Grosjean get past Paul di Resta. He gets into third

:04:27.:04:34.

place. He is down the inside of the Ferrari, side-by-side on the exit of

:04:34.:04:42.

the corner. They touch! It is very hot stuff between Mark Webber and

:04:42.:04:46.

Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton has gone down the inside for fifth

:04:46.:04:51.

place, he is on to the last lap. Sebastian Vettel wins in Bahrain.

:04:51.:04:57.

Yes! Quite a touchy-feely race from

:04:57.:05:02.

Bahrain, just the way we like it, that this is round five, and we are

:05:02.:05:10.

back in Europe. In a couple of weeks, the glitz of Monaco. Then,

:05:10.:05:15.

Montreal, followed by a homecoming for four drivers at Silverstone. You

:05:15.:05:21.

can revel in the atmosphere in Northamptonshire or watch it live on

:05:21.:05:27.

BBC, as well as all of the free practice. This weekend, it is about

:05:27.:05:31.

tap us and Rioja as the Catalan crowd swarmed into the circuit to

:05:31.:05:34.

see if there he wrote Fernando Alonso can fight the Bulls and

:05:35.:05:44.
:05:45.:06:12.

To lead us gracefully through the weekend, David Coulthard. He has

:06:12.:06:16.

appeared on the podium here for times. And Eddie Jordan. Eddie

:06:16.:06:20.

Jordan has never appeared on the podium here, but he is wearing a

:06:20.:06:26.

fabulous shirt! I will have to check that! I am sure you are right!

:06:26.:06:32.

do you feel about the championship so far? We have been served titanic

:06:32.:06:37.

battles in every area, and I see that continuing, more of the same,

:06:37.:06:41.

please. We want the excitement and the glamour and as many different

:06:41.:06:46.

winners as we can get. Pastor Maldonado threw up a surprise last

:06:46.:06:54.

year, winning for Williams, their first win since 2004. He was no

:06:54.:07:03.

friend of mine! It was a great result for Williams, but they looked

:07:03.:07:06.

some way short of achieving that this weekend. Qualifying is so

:07:06.:07:13.

important here. Everybody thinks Monaco is the most important, but 20

:07:13.:07:16.

out of the 22 races have been one here from the front row. Why is

:07:16.:07:25.

that? You can overtake, but Formula 1 was historically the fastest car

:07:25.:07:30.

qualifying at the front, and it was a series of sprints, but with DRS

:07:30.:07:35.

and carrying the fuel levels, and managing the tyres, that is why it

:07:35.:07:41.

is possible to overtake. It is the unpredictability of the tyres.

:07:41.:07:50.

has been going on already. Here is the news.

:07:50.:07:53.

Fernando Alonso has only once when the Spanish grand prix, but he hopes

:07:53.:08:00.

he can add to that. Qualifying is not Ferrari's strong point, and this

:08:00.:08:05.

race has been won from the front row for 16 years. It is time to break

:08:05.:08:12.

this statistic. This year, with the degradation, many things can

:08:12.:08:17.

happen. It is more important to have a good tyre management and to have

:08:17.:08:22.

an extra point to in qualifying. Sebastian Vettel has an impressive

:08:22.:08:26.

strike rate when it comes to pole position, and he has claimed top

:08:26.:08:31.

spot in over a third of his career. He has not had it all of his own way

:08:31.:08:35.

this year, but he hopes Red Bull will answer his prayers. Number one

:08:35.:08:40.

on the wish list was to understand the tyres and the races we had and

:08:40.:08:46.

why we have suffered. Jenson Button and Sergio Perez have talked things

:08:46.:08:51.

through after they clashed on track in Bahrain. They are battling not

:08:51.:08:55.

just with each other but also with an underperforming MacLaren, and

:08:55.:09:02.

that does not look to have got better. We are in a similar position

:09:02.:09:09.

than we were two weekends ago. If anything, slightly worse. With this

:09:09.:09:13.

sport, everybody is moving forward, so even if we have gained, everybody

:09:13.:09:20.

is gaining. It is tricky. But they are working flat out to improve it.

:09:20.:09:24.

Paul di Resta was not happy after this happened in free practice

:09:24.:09:29.

yesterday, but he has had a smile on his face since his performance in

:09:29.:09:33.

Bahrain. He finished in fourth place, just missing out on his first

:09:33.:09:39.

podium. We need to build a faster car. If they want me to get onto the

:09:39.:09:44.

podium, they need to give me something. It is nice to get fourth

:09:44.:09:48.

place out of the way early in the year. If you had said that at the

:09:48.:09:53.

beginning, I would have grabbed it with both hands. Lewis Hamilton has

:09:53.:09:56.

never won the Spanish Grand Prix, but he knows how important the start

:09:56.:10:01.

of the European leg of the championship is. We need strong

:10:01.:10:04.

results going into the European season, so it is important for

:10:04.:10:11.

everybody. This is one of the toughest parts of the year. As we

:10:11.:10:16.

come off such a long break. I hope we get off on the right foot.

:10:16.:10:22.

Finally, James Anderson has left his position as technical director of

:10:22.:10:29.

Lotus, with Nick Chester replacing him. The resignation comes as a blow

:10:29.:10:33.

to the team, currently second in the constructors championship. It is

:10:33.:10:36.

thought he will go to Williams, McLaren or Ferrari.

:10:36.:10:44.

It is a blow for the team, round five, how much of a blow? We are

:10:44.:10:50.

underplaying it, it is a massive blow. For any team that is

:10:50.:10:55.

successful to lose their technical director, it is just short of

:10:55.:10:59.

catastrophic in my view, it is a big estate. The smart money is he is

:10:59.:11:05.

going to move to Ferrari. How good is he? Peak is one of the star

:11:05.:11:10.

designers in Formula 1. It is not just a case of losing one man, it is

:11:10.:11:16.

what he does to the confidence of the rest of the team. As a driver,

:11:16.:11:21.

cannot affect you psychologically? Of course. When I moved to Red

:11:22.:11:27.

Bull, I wanted the best person available. He has joined the team

:11:27.:11:32.

and taken them forward. The drivers are attached to their engineers and

:11:32.:11:37.

designers. Everybody has been talking about updates in Barcelona,

:11:37.:11:41.

we have discussed it, Gary has got the headlines.

:11:41.:11:47.

I have had a look at some of the performances in the first four races

:11:47.:11:49.

of the season, it is not just the fastest card that leads the

:11:49.:11:58.

championship. Averaging the fastest lap by each driver, I have got ten

:11:58.:12:01.

cars together to do a lap of Barcelona. Nico Rosberg is the

:12:01.:12:11.
:12:11.:12:12.

fastest. I have given the gaps in car lengths. The bottom number,

:12:12.:12:21.

Lewis Hamilton is 3.2 car lengths behind Nico Rosberg. Felipe Massa is

:12:21.:12:25.

close to his team-mate, but still 7.3 car lengths away from the

:12:25.:12:31.

fastest. Mark Webber has got a lot of ground to make up to Sebastian

:12:31.:12:35.

Vettel, and the same for Romain Grosjean behind Kimi Raikkonen. But

:12:35.:12:44.

this is what the team wants to see, the drivers close together. If the

:12:44.:12:49.

team build a better car, they will move up and give them two chances.

:12:49.:12:55.

In the top ten, McLaren are absent. They have got a lot of updates,

:12:55.:12:59.

including the side pods, getting more air flow to pick up the

:12:59.:13:04.

high-speed air coming out of the exhaust system Tom moving get inside

:13:04.:13:08.

the rear tyre, to create more downforce. They have also tested a

:13:08.:13:18.
:13:18.:13:18.

new front wing. They have changed the inboard end. It allows better

:13:18.:13:22.

airflow to the back of the car, but they have not got anything out of

:13:22.:13:27.

it. If I was trying to develop the McLaren, I would be looking at this

:13:27.:13:30.

problem, the front of the car bouncing up and down. It onset of

:13:30.:13:37.

the driver on the corner entry. What Red Bull, you need more slot gaps,

:13:37.:13:43.

so you get more consistent downforce. The top teams have got

:13:43.:13:48.

more compensated front wings. If you look at Red Bull, the car hardly

:13:48.:13:54.

moves, so the driver can commit to the corner much quicker. McLaren

:13:54.:13:58.

still have a lot of work to do, and they had better get on with it,

:13:58.:14:01.

because the championship is getting away from them.

:14:01.:14:07.

Yes, there is a lot of disappointed McLaren fans out there. The thing

:14:07.:14:12.

about upgrades, this is not a place where you can win, but you can lose

:14:12.:14:16.

out if you are not as fast and things are not working as well as

:14:16.:14:26.
:14:26.:14:26.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:14:26.:15:08.

everybody else. Let's have a look at time last year and - --. Those

:15:08.:15:12.

championship-winning days seem to be becoming ever more distant. What

:15:12.:15:22.
:15:22.:15:25.

When I came into motorsport, there were two teams I revered - Williams

:15:25.:15:32.

and McLaren. Two great British teams that dominated the 80s and

:15:32.:15:40.

90s. There is the world champions. Both had legendary names behind the

:15:40.:15:46.

wheels of their machines. 36 championships between them now seen

:15:46.:15:54.

such a distant memory. This here, Williams are yet to score a point.

:15:54.:15:59.

McLaren, who threw away the Championship last year, are

:15:59.:16:08.

celebrating 10th place on the grid in Bahrain. It is a bit sad that

:16:08.:16:11.

the world champion is quite so excited to have made it into the

:16:11.:16:18.

top 10. What has gone wrong? Only five races ago we were winning

:16:18.:16:23.

cranberries. When you are operating at that level, you are going to go

:16:23.:16:30.

through peaks and troughs. You take risks. In our case, over the winter,

:16:30.:16:36.

we changed a lot of things to the car - a grand prix winning kart -

:16:36.:16:44.

and we did that with a view that it would pay back in the long term. --

:16:44.:16:50.

car. Arguably, you have the fast as car last season. Where has it all

:16:50.:16:57.

gone? You are in 6th place. What are you going to do about this?

:16:57.:17:02.

have done a lot of aerodynamic and mechanical testing. We do not focus

:17:02.:17:08.

on one area. If I look at the history of teams who have had poor

:17:08.:17:13.

seasons, you can have a poor season and still come 4th or 5th in the

:17:13.:17:19.

Championship. It is not like that anymore. And you are at the back

:17:19.:17:25.

and out of the points. The Grid has certainly become more competitive

:17:25.:17:30.

but that is the name of the game. It is a competition - survival of

:17:30.:17:37.

the fittest. At this grand prix last year, Williams won. They

:17:37.:17:44.

thought they had turned a corner. Our aim now going backwards? -- are

:17:45.:17:52.

they now going backwards? They are really struggling. Marussia are

:17:52.:17:58.

much more competitive. You are now saying they are your competitors.

:17:58.:18:01.

think they have done a good job this year and we have not fulfilled

:18:02.:18:06.

our potential. We believe in a few races we will be back up to where

:18:06.:18:11.

we were before. McLaren always attracted the biggest names in

:18:11.:18:16.

Formula One. Lewis Hamilton was no exception and his loss looks like

:18:16.:18:21.

it is hurting the team even more as Sergio Perez struggles to make the

:18:21.:18:27.

step up. This time last year you had twice as many points as you do

:18:27.:18:31.

now. Really? Definitely not the start to the season I would like to

:18:31.:18:41.
:18:41.:18:42.

have had. Is Sergio Perez here because of his ability and what he

:18:42.:18:47.

can bring to the team? He brings no cash to the team Foster he was

:18:47.:18:56.

selected because of his excellent performances on long runs. -- the

:18:56.:19:01.

team. At Williams, a combination of a lack of expense drivers and a

:19:01.:19:07.

poor car has made them one of the slowest in qualifying. Williams do

:19:07.:19:12.

not seem to be quite as competitive. I take it you are not ultra

:19:12.:19:22.
:19:22.:19:24.

concerned? Not alter concerned but I am concerned. -- Ultra concerned.

:19:24.:19:30.

The board appoints Sam Michael's to run the show. What would you do to

:19:30.:19:34.

turn this team around? It is not appropriate for me to discuss my

:19:34.:19:41.

position within the company. I understand what the board is doing

:19:41.:19:47.

to get this car back to the front. I would be backing them. What would

:19:47.:19:52.

you do? I just answer that. I would be supporting what the guys are

:19:52.:19:57.

doing now. You would not change anything? That is the fastest way

:19:57.:20:03.

of getting ourselves back to the front. It is all very well he's

:20:03.:20:09.

smiling. It is not great news for Jenson Button and Sergio Perez.

:20:09.:20:13.

is more frustrating for Jenson Button. He knows that when you have

:20:13.:20:20.

a difficult car, the chances of turning it round up pretty slim.

:20:20.:20:26.

Can they do it? Of course they can. It does beg the question, why do

:20:26.:20:31.

McLaren find themselves in these situations more often than not? If

:20:31.:20:36.

you look at Lotus, they might not always have had championship-

:20:36.:20:42.

winning cars but they have always been in the top three. Eddy did ask

:20:42.:20:47.

the question but it was skirted around. How can they go from having

:20:47.:20:56.

the fastest car tha steered. -- last year with Jenson Button doing

:20:56.:21:02.

so well. They have turned up in the way they did. They do not seem to

:21:02.:21:10.

be moving forward. Be fundamentally changed the design of the car.

:21:10.:21:15.

Clearly they have gone for a different aerodynamic concept. They

:21:15.:21:21.

talk about correlation. Sergio Perez kept mentioning coronation.

:21:21.:21:26.

That is taking up wind-tunnel data, putting it on the race track and

:21:26.:21:33.

not seeing the result. As far as I know, they still use the wind

:21:33.:21:40.

tunnel, as do Ferrari and other teams. That he is based in Cologne.

:21:40.:21:45.

The difficulty they have is the odd car would probably be quicker than

:21:45.:21:54.

the new one. -- the old car. What you're saying about the wind tunnel

:21:54.:21:59.

testing and bringing it here. In the free practice sessions, they

:21:59.:22:06.

would have been testing it. It does not seem to have worked. It clearly

:22:06.:22:11.

has not. It is embarrassing for the top teams - teams that aspire to

:22:11.:22:17.

win championships - to explain why it is not working. They had

:22:17.:22:21.

investors, sponsors and fans who follow the team. They had to

:22:21.:22:27.

explain themselves. It is the same for a football manager or a public

:22:27.:22:33.

sport where you have to deliver. felt it was so exciting - the

:22:33.:22:39.

racing. Watching two drivers do this is something else. Sergio

:22:39.:22:43.

Perez was under pressure going into this grand prix. He did not have a

:22:43.:22:48.

wonderful start to the season. Jenson Button had established

:22:48.:22:54.

himself as number one. Then Sergio Perez came back with a bank. As he

:22:54.:23:00.

tries to undercut, he touched the back of the cup of Jenson Button.

:23:00.:23:09.

He said, come on, have a word! -- the car. They ran side-by-side. It

:23:09.:23:12.

Jenson Button ran him wide. This is where the relationship started to

:23:12.:23:21.

develop will start once you get a nice, Welcome to the team, Jenson

:23:21.:23:28.

Button has laid a marker saying, I want to be Team Leader. He went and

:23:28.:23:33.

showed he could do the business. That is great for McLaren and

:23:33.:23:40.

racing fans everywhere. We could not get hold of Martin Whitmarsh

:23:40.:23:45.

afterwards. It does not look likely be will see the McLarens at the

:23:45.:23:51.

front foot stuck he was talking about Williams having problems. --

:23:51.:23:59.

at the front. Clare, obviously the question on everyone's lips is, as

:23:59.:24:05.

I have asked, are you Ultra concerned? What is your view?

:24:05.:24:10.

are Williams. We like to score points. To have Nant is frustrating

:24:10.:24:16.

for everyone. -- to not have any is frustrating for everyone. We need

:24:16.:24:22.

to keep working and we will get there. I am sure you are aware that

:24:22.:24:28.

James Allison is available at the moment. Is he available?Do not

:24:28.:24:37.

play with me like that! I need to go and find him if he is available.

:24:37.:24:47.

His error the real problem with your car? -- is aero. In the mid-

:24:47.:24:51.

corner section, but guys are struggling with grip. We had a good

:24:51.:24:57.

test last week. The drivers are saying the car is better than it

:24:57.:25:07.
:25:07.:25:07.

felt. We need to keep working on that. Can you celebrate again? We

:25:07.:25:11.

always come here wanting to win because we are Williams and that is

:25:11.:25:20.

what they want to do. It would be a good to get points. Fingers crossed.

:25:20.:25:25.

Claire making out that it is definitely the car and not the

:25:25.:25:33.

drivers. We have not really seen what Valtteri Bottas has yet?

:25:33.:25:39.

comes with some great credentials. Pastor Maldonado has matured during

:25:39.:25:45.

his career. No question they can deliver if the car is working well.

:25:45.:25:50.

Williams have a great depth of history, winning, success. They do

:25:50.:25:58.

not seem to be able to use that for future performance? When you were

:25:58.:26:02.

driving, to your fabulous of world- class standard, did you have a

:26:02.:26:09.

coach? I had a basketball coach. I did not. I tried every area to

:26:09.:26:15.

improve my performance. I am sure you did. It seems a solitary

:26:15.:26:21.

existence for Formula One drivers. With other sports, they seem to get

:26:21.:26:26.

lots of help. We are interested when a young team of drivers were

:26:26.:26:32.

going to take into the Chelsea Football Club Academy to swap

:26:32.:26:39.

stories. Let's see how they got on. This is an exchange programme with

:26:39.:26:49.
:26:49.:26:50.

Chelsea Academy and the motor sport agency. We think it is really good

:26:50.:26:55.

that we get an insight to the other sports and vice-versa, to encourage

:26:55.:27:01.

people to come in to see what we're doing with the development of young

:27:01.:27:07.

players. In our last five, 10 years, there had been a lot of changes in

:27:07.:27:13.

training methods. All the methods used on senior players are in a

:27:13.:27:17.

academies. Intervention of science is incredible. The boys will get an

:27:17.:27:23.

insight into what the normal session is like. At Chelsea Academy,

:27:24.:27:30.

we say, if we can learn from somebody else, we will look at it.

:27:30.:27:34.

It is a fantastic place. I suppose it is all about an individual and

:27:34.:27:42.

how much he really wants it. It was very entertaining - a good

:27:42.:27:45.

experience learning different drills. The way they treat their

:27:45.:27:51.

game is similar to ourselves. They focus on every element. The whole

:27:51.:27:57.

facility is unbelievable. They have 37 football pitches. They have

:27:57.:28:02.

nutrition that massaging, medical centres. Even a swimming pool. They

:28:02.:28:07.

want to get the best out of their players. The more we go into the

:28:07.:28:11.

future, the more technical everything becomes. It is key to

:28:11.:28:18.

give drivers, footballers, whatever, the best to succeed and bring the

:28:18.:28:24.

best out of them. It is important to be in and around the right

:28:24.:28:30.

environment so you can develop your talent. The facilities here are

:28:30.:28:33.

fantastic. It is a brilliant environment to learn in and grow up

:28:34.:28:41.

and get better as a player. The technology that goes into it is

:28:41.:28:45.

fantastic. It is another dynamic added for young players, so they

:28:45.:28:50.

can look back and improve the games. Today was really about the

:28:50.:28:54.

opportunity for our drivers to understand how hard athletes in

:28:54.:28:59.

other sports work. The detail they go into, the briefing and

:28:59.:29:04.

debriefing, the analysis and reflection. Take some of that back

:29:04.:29:09.

and use it in motorsport. They put us out of our comfort zones this

:29:09.:29:13.

morning. You can see we're definitely not footballers. It is

:29:13.:29:20.

now payback time. The motor sports academy has been going for five,

:29:20.:29:24.

six years. The idea is to support the drivers, trying to help them

:29:24.:29:29.

develop the skills they need to take advantage of opportunities. We

:29:29.:29:33.

also need to learn from other sports. We need to bring in best

:29:33.:29:38.

practice that is perhaps not in our sport. There is an element of

:29:38.:29:43.

trying to be cutting edge was supporting the drivers in their

:29:43.:29:48.

aspirations. We are lucky to have four British drivers in Formula One.

:29:48.:29:51.

To have Max working with our young drivers and working with the

:29:51.:29:56.

Chelsea youth players has been really great. You always look up to

:29:56.:29:59.

the guys at the top of the sport and take inspiration from that. Max

:29:59.:30:09.
:30:09.:30:16.

fantastic, it was interesting, playing against teenagers who were

:30:16.:30:20.

better than us! It was really enjoyable, interesting to see how

:30:20.:30:25.

they work. You got your own back when it comes to reactions. They are

:30:25.:30:31.

not used to it. Their training is different from ours, it is

:30:31.:30:39.

interesting to see a difference. you think you learned anything?

:30:39.:30:45.

learned how to take a good penalty! Simple things, different structures,

:30:45.:30:52.

different warm-ups. Basically, nothing that will help you as a

:30:52.:30:56.

racing driver? I am not saying that! What has stretching got to do

:30:56.:31:00.

with driving? Warming up, the routine of exercises can help, I

:31:00.:31:09.

suppose, in some way. You stay with it! You were in the home of the

:31:09.:31:15.

champions of Europe, Chelsea. Will you be in Amsterdam to see another

:31:15.:31:21.

glory day? I will not, unfortunately! I have got other

:31:21.:31:26.

things planned, but I will record it. He will be stretching! We do not

:31:26.:31:31.

all get free tickets like some people. We wish you luck. You want

:31:31.:31:40.

to stay here and the driving in Formula 1 next year? Yes, I am

:31:40.:31:45.

concentrating on this year, we have got some good things to be announced

:31:45.:31:50.

soon, and I am looking forward to hopefully being in the paddock.

:31:50.:31:57.

have got to move on quickly. Let's go to the commentary box. Eddie

:31:57.:32:05.

Jordan, come with me. Let's have a quick word with Bernie Ecclestone.

:32:05.:32:10.

We can have a chat with him now. Good afternoon. How are you? Very

:32:10.:32:18.

well. How do you feel as though the season is shaping up? Very good.We

:32:18.:32:22.

are going to see a piece about Russia, how is the calendar being

:32:22.:32:30.

prepared for next year? We have got 20 odd races, but I have not put a

:32:30.:32:39.

calendar together yet. If Russia What about New Jersey? At the

:32:39.:32:45.

moment, I do not know. If they both come in, we would have 21 races, so

:32:45.:32:52.

might we lose any of the European races? Probably only the British. We

:32:52.:32:59.

could lose Silverstone? Yes. We have got to lose somewhere, and as we are

:32:59.:33:07.

all British, we do not grab everything for ourselves. You are

:33:07.:33:11.

the ultimate joke maker, level with us! What are you trying to tell the

:33:12.:33:17.

public? Straighten it up! I was asked a question. You did not and to

:33:17.:33:21.

truthfully! We have been talking about losing Belgium, which one is

:33:21.:33:30.

it? Have you? Probably lose one of them. It will not be Silverstone. I

:33:30.:33:36.

am serious. You are not serious about losing Silverstone? We have

:33:36.:33:45.

straighten that one up. Thank you, Mr Jordan! While you are here, I

:33:45.:33:55.

have seen the Bernie Ecclestone of the bikes world hanging around here.

:33:55.:34:02.

Do you get together, or do they followed you? I let them know what

:34:02.:34:06.

we are doing and they work around it. When will we know about New

:34:06.:34:14.

Jersey? I should think in another couple of months. One question, he

:34:14.:34:19.

brought us to Asia, when people were not considering going to Asia, and

:34:19.:34:25.

that is one of the biggest success stories that you have had? For sure.

:34:25.:34:33.

It has been successful. Let's have a look at the case that David did with

:34:33.:34:43.
:34:43.:34:43.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:34:43.:35:41.

Welcome to Russia, how do you feel? Thank you! I have not had a chance

:35:41.:35:46.

to see the circuit. We can drive on a part of the circuit. First

:35:46.:35:51.

impressions of the venue? It is pretty special. Once everything is

:35:51.:35:56.

finished, it will look incredible. It looks pretty quick. Let's have a

:35:56.:36:02.

drive around. I am not sure about your normal ride! That is specific

:36:02.:36:08.

to Red Bull. It is not as flexible as that in real life, is it? It is

:36:08.:36:18.
:36:18.:36:30.

control that is the issue, being in the passenger seat. You do not know

:36:30.:36:38.

what the other guy is doing. It is amazing how it feels quicker.

:36:38.:36:45.

is going to be a nice corner. is a long corner. If that part of

:36:45.:36:50.

the circuit? That is a car park!We do not have much racetrack.

:36:50.:37:00.
:37:00.:37:02.

much, but we have tracks. Now we are talking. This one is the second

:37:02.:37:12.
:37:12.:37:13.

corner, opening up. It should allow us to pick up some speed. We should

:37:13.:37:21.

have stopped at that junction! Russian style! It seems that Olympic

:37:21.:37:26.

Parks are operated to the same standard as the way Bernie

:37:26.:37:32.

Ecclestone runs Formula 1. Formula 1 is immaculate. Definitely, all of

:37:32.:37:36.

the stadium and the modern architecture. I am looking forward

:37:36.:37:41.

to coming back and seeing how it looks once it is finished. Does it

:37:41.:37:46.

touch with you at all the fact that you will race in the inaugural

:37:46.:37:52.

Russian grand prix? I see it as a privilege. It is something unique.

:37:52.:37:59.

To be part of it, it is great. have got your own model of car, you

:37:59.:38:04.

have made a fine mess of this, but we are here, on the tarmac, in the

:38:04.:38:10.

middle of the Olympic Park, it is impressive. It will be great. It is

:38:10.:38:13.

hard to imagine, but this will be the long straight after the

:38:13.:38:19.

start/finish. The second corner by the ice skating venue, and beyond,

:38:19.:38:26.

what do we have? I think that one is the speed skating rink, and that is

:38:26.:38:30.

the ice hockey Stadium. That will be the football stadium for the World

:38:30.:38:36.

Cup. Mountains in the background. You cannot see the scene now.

:38:36.:38:41.

the Black Sea. The water is blue, though. Why do they call it the

:38:41.:38:47.

Black Sea? I do not know!Let us be the first to wish you good luck for

:38:47.:38:54.

the first Russian Grand Prix. Cheers.

:38:54.:39:03.

A nice piece! I want is -- I want to show you Bernie Ecclestone's bus.

:39:03.:39:08.

There seems to be an extension this year. Yes, it is a conservatory or

:39:08.:39:15.

something! It looks as if it has musky to prove nothing. It would be

:39:15.:39:19.

better for it to be bullet-proof. would not dare mention such a

:39:19.:39:25.

thing! I did not know if I could be rude, so I am glad you were next to

:39:25.:39:34.

me. He was keen to be interviewed by you! I wonder why! I am not sure!

:39:34.:39:39.

And interesting GT about Russia, it will be incredible. It does not

:39:39.:39:45.

become more clear than that. Forget New Jersey for the moment, but

:39:45.:39:51.

Russia, the whole thing, Russia is a big market, the vastness of the

:39:51.:39:55.

country, it is part of the footprint that I alluded to, Bernie Ecclestone

:39:55.:40:01.

took us to Asia, Africa, South America, he is a genius at seeing

:40:01.:40:08.

the future. He moves when the money is. That is part of being magical.

:40:08.:40:14.

If you want the business to continue. He is hugely astute, you

:40:14.:40:18.

have to admire everything he does. lot of people will be worried if we

:40:19.:40:24.

will lose Spain, Belgium, Germany. It has got a double edge to it.

:40:24.:40:28.

did say we would not lose Silverstone, and that is the most

:40:28.:40:34.

important for us! Let's have a better look at this track, David

:40:34.:40:44.
:40:44.:40:47.

The first race back in Europe, and as a Spanish speaking country,

:40:47.:40:51.

walking past the fans, you have a big Spanish report. Does that give

:40:51.:40:57.

you an extra boost? We do not have a Mexican Grand Prix, the closest we

:40:57.:41:05.

go is Austin. It is special to be back and have good support from the

:41:05.:41:12.

people. We have stopped in the middle of the second corner. This is

:41:12.:41:20.

very interesting. It is a very big corner, the first three. You have to

:41:20.:41:24.

get the first one right, the on the right line, and the second one is

:41:24.:41:29.

the same. Once you have done the first one, you are thinking about

:41:29.:41:34.

the third one. This is one of the defining corners of the Barcelona

:41:34.:41:41.

track. You always try to be flat. It is important, the line. It is very

:41:41.:41:47.

tight on the entry and the apex, but it opens so much on the exit. It is

:41:47.:41:57.
:41:57.:41:58.

a right-hander. It is always hard to keep it to the right. Corner nine.

:41:58.:42:02.

You do not see the except, you just see where you end up. You see

:42:02.:42:12.
:42:12.:42:12.

nothing. You do not know where you are. Often, do see people running

:42:12.:42:20.

out. You move into a great overtaking opportunity. After

:42:20.:42:23.

Bahrain, it was a great race for you, good points, wheel to wheel

:42:23.:42:28.

with your team-mate, you have shown you have got the hunger and the

:42:28.:42:32.

drive to not just the another member of the team, you want to be the team

:42:32.:42:37.

leader. Exactly, that is my aim. I came here to win and to fight for

:42:37.:42:46.

the win. We had a mad fight. It was a bit too risky. If you see the

:42:46.:42:53.

race, you can see that we risk a lot, to take both cars out of the

:42:53.:42:59.

track. Was there any contact?Once or twice, we had some contact.

:42:59.:43:09.
:43:09.:43:10.

much? Just this much.Do not hate me! It was just that much. But in

:43:10.:43:17.

the end, we had a nice chat with the bosses and got it clear. Now we are

:43:17.:43:21.

looking forward to fighting game, but hopefully further up the grid.

:43:21.:43:27.

We do not be want -- we do not want to fight for sixth or eighth place.

:43:27.:43:37.
:43:37.:43:37.

It is a Mickey Mouse Park. They call these sausages. You do not go over

:43:37.:43:44.

that much, you try to go here. It is not that bad, the Kurds are not our

:43:44.:43:50.

weakest point. We should be all right. Our problem is traction. We

:43:50.:43:55.

struggle coming out of the corner. Keep smiling, enjoy, have a good

:43:55.:44:03.

weekend. There is Felipe Massa, just a couple

:44:03.:44:08.

of seconds ago, he came out, getting ready for qualifying behind us. He

:44:08.:44:12.

was fastest in the last session, what do you think his chances are of

:44:12.:44:22.
:44:22.:44:22.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:44:22.:49:50.

under way, nobody is rushing to get out there. The clock is ticking

:49:50.:49:56.

away. The target is to get into the top 16, and then make through to the

:49:56.:50:02.

second part of qualifying. We saw them in practice, Gary Anderson is

:50:02.:50:08.

always looking at the target times. RADIO: The wind is similar to

:50:08.:50:18.
:50:18.:50:18.

gestate afternoon -- yesterday afternoon. Similar intensity to

:50:18.:50:28.
:50:28.:50:35.

yesterday. When you get to the first corner, you have a bit more

:50:35.:50:40.

downforce because of the headwind. The tailwind through the night

:50:40.:50:45.

corner, the quick right-hander, that is a bit more concerning, if you get

:50:45.:50:49.

a gust of wind up the back of the car. That is where you have to be

:50:49.:50:54.

careful. As far as lap times are concerned, we have not seen

:50:54.:51:01.

everybody do the real performance yet. I would be looking at 1:23 as

:51:01.:51:11.
:51:11.:51:11.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:51:11.:51:56.

being the cut-off point for 16th as ever. A former winner of this

:51:56.:52:01.

grand prix, but he would love to add another victory. The reaction last

:52:01.:52:08.

year was superb in Valencia. It is six years since he won here. He has

:52:08.:52:12.

massive support, the only Spanish driver to have won a grand prix, and

:52:12.:52:17.

he has transformed the following. In the early days in Spain, you would

:52:17.:52:21.

have a couple of people in the grandstands, because they normally

:52:21.:52:28.

follow motorbikes, but Formula 1 has been embraced. Gary, Sauber are

:52:28.:52:33.

struggling. We have spoken about McLaren and Williams, but they were

:52:33.:52:37.

fifth on the grid last year, there is no chance of that today.

:52:37.:52:44.

really. They have gone for the more narrow side pod package. That is a

:52:44.:52:53.

drag reduction device. It is used nowadays to generate downforce. They

:52:53.:52:59.

have taken away some of the potentially... It is difficult to

:52:59.:53:04.

make work if they have not got it. And few teams have got a bit of work

:53:05.:53:12.

to do over the course of this event and the rest of the year. Tom?

:53:12.:53:18.

walking past the Williams garage, and the team were showing Pastor

:53:18.:53:23.

Maldonado a photograph of him with last year's race winning trophy, and

:53:23.:53:29.

he was shouting at this photograph to get himself wrapped up. Have you

:53:29.:53:39.

ever used methods like that, David? Know, but it answers questions. I

:53:39.:53:44.

live in the same apartment block in Monaco, and it explains the strange

:53:44.:53:47.

noises! I never needed motivation. Sebastian Vettel was listening to

:53:47.:53:55.

music. A Toro Rosso takes to the track, Daniel Ricciardo, getting out

:53:55.:54:00.

there nice and early, benefiting from the clean air. It is lovely to

:54:00.:54:04.

see the youngsters here this weekend, enjoying the sights and

:54:04.:54:10.

sounds of Formula 1. Daniel Ricciardo on the track. The boss of

:54:10.:54:16.

Ferrari here this weekend to monitor things. There is no doubt that

:54:16.:54:21.

Ferrari are in a better position this year, but a bit restricted in

:54:21.:54:26.

points, because Fernando Alonso is on 47, 30 points behind Sebastian

:54:26.:54:31.

Vettel. But that is because they have a DRS problem and the accident

:54:31.:54:40.

in Malaysia. Hindsight is wonderful. But I am sure they wish

:54:40.:54:43.

they had called him in when the front wing came off. The double

:54:43.:54:51.

failure. The message was given him -- to him that he should not use

:54:51.:54:56.

it, but he decided to give it another go, so he had to make two

:54:56.:55:00.

pitstops in the first few laps. But they hung in there with a car that

:55:00.:55:06.

was nowhere near as good as this year's. So I expect him to be

:55:06.:55:08.

battling for the championship, closing the gap down to Sebastian

:55:08.:55:13.

Vettel. We are through the first couple of corners, because working

:55:13.:55:20.

very hard, and it continues to do so. It is a great opening section,

:55:20.:55:30.
:55:30.:55:30.

it is what makes this circuit is interesting for the drivers. We join

:55:30.:55:37.

him on number five. Then, number seven, you drop into the apex and

:55:37.:55:43.

immediately accelerate up the hill. The camera does not do this

:55:43.:55:51.

elevation change justice. RADIO: Remember to learn it all on this

:55:51.:55:59.

map. That is to do with the second I session -- to do with the

:55:59.:56:05.

synchronisation. Daniel Ricciardo continues his lap, we are into

:56:05.:56:10.

technical stuff here. Yes, the little chicane that has been added

:56:10.:56:15.

to slow the cars down. It neutered a great last section of the Barcelona

:56:15.:56:22.

circuit, but demands to improve safety, reduce the speed... How does

:56:22.:56:27.

this compare to this morning? not get a proper lap in this

:56:27.:56:32.

morning, he got held up by Lewis Hamilton, but he still went quicker,

:56:32.:56:37.

so that is not particularly fast. He is on the hard tyre, he went out on

:56:37.:56:43.

the medium tired this morning. has got a few laps of fuel in their

:56:43.:56:49.

so he will do another one two, depending on the life of the tyres.

:56:49.:56:53.

They would have built up information about what they can start to expect

:56:53.:57:03.
:57:03.:57:04.

from the tyres this weekend. The medium tyres of white. Valtteri

:57:04.:57:14.
:57:14.:57:15.

Bottas on the hard tyres. That is orange, I think! It is good they

:57:15.:57:20.

have gone for the slight change of colour this year. Valtteri Bottas

:57:20.:57:23.

hoping Williams have made improvements. Quite a lot of work on

:57:23.:57:29.

the steering wheel. He has got his big opportunity with a team that has

:57:29.:57:33.

won championships in the past, won a grand prix last year, but they have

:57:33.:57:41.

not started well at all. Everybody in Formula 1 follows Williams, but

:57:41.:57:45.

more often than not, they are playing catch up to the middle of

:57:45.:57:49.

the grid, rather than to the front. He has gone faster than Nico

:57:49.:57:56.

Hulkenberg, and Daniel Ricciardo. Jean-Eric Vergne is quickest. That

:57:56.:58:01.

is slightly encouraging for Williams, let's wait and see. Lots

:58:01.:58:11.
:58:11.:58:13.

of new parts on the Williams this weekend. We will also wait to see if

:58:13.:58:18.

the top teams decide to try and get through on the hard tyres or save

:58:18.:58:24.

the hard tyres for tomorrow. On the hard tyre is Romain Grosjean, he was

:58:24.:58:34.
:58:34.:58:57.

the fourth fastest this morning. You course of last season, he was

:58:57.:59:04.

consistent. It will be interesting to see if Romain Grosjean can

:59:04.:59:09.

deliver. Kimi Raikkonen will be first over the line. Then we will

:59:09.:59:15.

see Romain Grosjean. Kimi Raikkonen is fastest at the moment. That was

:59:15.:59:22.

a mistake. On the by no sector he made a mistake this morning. -- on

:59:22.:59:30.

the final sector. He ran it over the kerb. Kimi Raikkonen was still

:59:30.:59:37.

quickest. A bit of a tail wind coming into turned 10. It will

:59:38.:59:42.

affect drive and traction into the last turn of foot stuck I will be

:59:42.:59:50.

surprised if this is quicker. - us the last turn. That lock up will

:59:50.:59:57.

have cost him at least a 10th pull stub Fernando Alonso is coming out

:59:57.:00:07.
:00:07.:00:12.

on the hard tyre. -- at least eight Raikkonen was doing. As he came

:00:12.:00:21.

back on to the circuit, you saw the sparking. He got very wide before

:00:21.:00:27.

entering turn three. He was already drifting wide. That was affecting

:00:27.:00:35.

his overall lap time. We will have to wait and see what everybody does.

:00:35.:00:42.

That was on a hard tyre. You would expect to see lower teams using a

:00:42.:00:50.

medium compound. Paul di Resta, last time he was tantalisingly

:00:50.:00:57.

close. He looks fired-up and confident. The car has more

:00:57.:01:03.

improvements. Not quite as quick as the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne.

:01:03.:01:08.

A few teams have said that car is looking quick this weekend. He has

:01:08.:01:14.

proved that already on his first run. Did Paul di Resta have a lock

:01:14.:01:22.

up? As you drop down into the apex, there was an adjustment on the

:01:22.:01:27.

steering wheel which was differential. He got away with the

:01:27.:01:33.

apex. We know these tyres are fragile. Across the line goes

:01:33.:01:39.

Fernando Alonso. Kimi Raikkonen has done a good first sector and so

:01:39.:01:44.

decent middle sector. He might be getting another lapped out of these

:01:44.:01:51.

hard tyres. There was the classic line. He had more space in to turn

:01:51.:01:56.

three. Fantastic to see a change of direction. He pulled the car over

:01:56.:02:03.

to the left side of the circuit. He has gone fastest of all. That is a

:02:03.:02:10.

big chunk of time. A bit of oversteer in to turn five. Plenty

:02:10.:02:17.

of width on exit. Using all the road. The crowd is loving it. The

:02:17.:02:24.

lap time does not matter. They are giving him home support. The DRS is

:02:24.:02:34.
:02:34.:02:42.

Hulkenberg. Filipe Massa is also half a second up. Fernando Alonso

:02:42.:02:50.

is half a second up as well. He is matching Fernando Alonso as well.

:02:50.:02:59.

Let's see what the final sector gives us. Across the line, 1:22.2

:02:59.:03:03.

on the harder compound tyre. That is similar to the lap time from

:03:03.:03:10.

this morning. That is tremendous pace from Ferrari. Lotus will be a

:03:10.:03:14.

bit surprised to have seen such a gain of speed by Ferrari. Get see

:03:35.:03:39.

:03:39.:03:49.

:04:00.:04:05.

standard. He runs it out to the edge. Great commitment from Nico

:04:05.:04:14.

Rosberg. This is a long, medium speed corner. The Red Bull will have

:04:14.:04:20.

taken his attention slightly. He would not have been comfortable.

:04:20.:04:28.

is on the medium compound. He is already .3 down on that sector, that

:04:28.:04:33.

was not due to the time lost because of the Red Bull. Mercedes have not

:04:33.:04:39.

looked as fast relative to the other one fine performances this year. But

:04:39.:04:44.

they are the fastest in this sector, though. He is only 0.2 down on the

:04:44.:04:53.

outright fastest time. Let's see if the third sector is impressive.

:04:53.:04:56.

Mercedes have lost performance in the races until now, Colin fired

:04:56.:05:04.

well, but not done so well in the races. Let's see whether this is

:05:04.:05:11.

good enough. Yes, he is on the softer tyre, and he does fastest. It

:05:11.:05:16.

is not quite the fastest time yet, Felipe Massa was a fraction faster

:05:16.:05:20.

this morning, but that is the fastest time of qualifying. Now,

:05:20.:05:30.
:05:30.:05:31.

Sergio Perez. We will wait for him to get his way to the line. We just

:05:31.:05:41.
:05:41.:05:41.

saw Nicky louder, with the chairman of the board, nodding his head. It

:05:41.:05:48.

is good for the boss to see due fastest of all at this stage.

:05:48.:05:54.

Button on board as he comes through the final corner. Sergio Perez 1.4

:05:54.:06:01.

seconds away from Nicole spoke. -- from Nico Rosberg. A shake of the

:06:01.:06:10.

head. Jenson Button on the same tyre as Sergio Perez. Sebastian Vettel

:06:10.:06:16.

going second fastest. He is on the softer tyre. Lewis Hamilton goes

:06:16.:06:23.

fastest. He is also on the softer compound. He goes 0.2 quicker than

:06:23.:06:29.

his team-mate. Mercedes are showing more pace. We wondered if they had

:06:29.:06:34.

been hiding it away. We have not seen Ferrari or voters on the softer

:06:34.:06:40.

tyre. I wonder if they will run it. We have yet to see Mark Webber

:06:40.:06:46.

establish a lap time. He is in fifth place. On board with Pastor

:06:46.:06:56.
:06:56.:06:57.

Maldonado. RADIO: He is coming up behind. Massively held up by the

:06:57.:07:01.

Williams through the last sector, he has got to get a penalty for that.

:07:01.:07:07.

That will be looked at, that will be interesting. The steward this

:07:07.:07:14.

weekend is Alan Jones, the 1980 world champion. Tom, it is pretty

:07:14.:07:20.

active on the track. I just wanted to comment on the track temperature,

:07:20.:07:27.

it has gone up two degrees. We have got clear blue skies above. One of

:07:27.:07:31.

the guys at Pirelli said, as the track temperature warms up, the

:07:31.:07:36.

difference between the compounds will reduce. RADIO: We will use them

:07:36.:07:42.

again. At one point yesterday, it looked like the difference was 0.5

:07:42.:07:48.

seconds, but it might be as little as 0.3 seconds. Esteban Gutierrez

:07:48.:07:55.

crosses the line. Who will be in the top 16? We are missing Valtteri

:07:55.:08:03.

Bottas, Mikko Holcombe Berg, Charles Peek, Jules Bianchi, Giedo van der

:08:03.:08:10.

Garde and Max Chilton. Nico Hulkenberg desperately trying to

:08:10.:08:17.

move himself out of the drop zone. All that matters is getting into the

:08:17.:08:24.

top 16 at this stage. Paul di Resta has some work to do, Adrian Sutil is

:08:24.:08:28.

currently in 11th place. They go Holcombe Berg has been struggling

:08:28.:08:33.

with a car that has not responded the way he wanted -- Nico

:08:33.:08:43.
:08:43.:08:44.

Hulkenberg. It is not looking like a great lap so far. Another 0.3 down

:08:44.:08:50.

in the second sector, so he will be around one second off the fastest.

:08:50.:08:56.

He will be in the top ten with that. We will wait and see. Is this going

:08:56.:09:03.

to be enough for Nico Hulkenberg to make it through to Q2? He is up to

:09:03.:09:09.

ninth place. Paul di Resta is safely through. Kimi Raikkonen is on a

:09:10.:09:16.

quick lap. The fastest in the first two sectors, and he is on the harder

:09:16.:09:23.

tyre. That is interesting. He has not gone for the softer tyre.

:09:23.:09:26.

Traffic on the last sector, that is ridiculous. Is that Esteban

:09:26.:09:36.

Gutierrez? He was having a siesta. Still a better lap than he had done

:09:36.:09:40.

until that stage, he is safely through, and he has done it on the

:09:41.:09:46.

hard tyre. Red Bull seem to be saving their hard tyres for

:09:46.:09:49.

tomorrow, because Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber will run the medium

:09:50.:09:53.

tyres again in the second part of qualifying. Different tactics from

:09:53.:10:00.

some. Valtteri Bottas is definitely out, the chequered flag is out, and

:10:01.:10:05.

one of the Williams is not through to the second part of qualifying.

:10:05.:10:09.

The Sauber was trying to keep a gap to the car in front, but you cannot

:10:09.:10:16.

obstruct another car. That is fairly straightforward, he will get a

:10:16.:10:19.

penalty afterwards. Esteban Gutierrez is currently in 16th

:10:19.:10:24.

place, but he will get a penalty. Let's see if anybody else manages to

:10:24.:10:30.

pick him, as he is the one to be pushed down. Both Williams are not

:10:30.:10:35.

through at this stage. They have both seen the chequered flag.

:10:35.:10:40.

Esteban Gutierrez will hold on to 16th place, so who will win the

:10:40.:10:46.

battle of caterer and Russia? Jules Bianchi is ahead of Charles Peek.

:10:46.:10:54.

Max Chilton about to cross the line. Giedo van der Garde goes faster than

:10:54.:11:04.
:11:04.:11:06.

all of them, well done to him. He has beaten his team-mate. RADIO: You

:11:06.:11:12.

are in 17th at the moment. Giedo van der Garde will be well pleased with

:11:12.:11:18.

his performance there. Getting ahead of all of the others. He knows this

:11:18.:11:24.

track, but the headline story is that Williams have failed with both

:11:24.:11:29.

cars to get into Q2, they have not managed to get both cars into Q2 at

:11:29.:11:34.

any session this year, but this time, they have failed with both.

:11:34.:11:40.

They have usually had one of them in there, but neither of them. It is so

:11:40.:11:43.

disappointing, when they have had the updates on the car, and the

:11:44.:11:50.

drivers have been it -- reporting improvements. Esteban Gutierrez will

:11:50.:11:56.

end up with a penalty after this. will be interesting to see if Kimi

:11:56.:12:05.

Raikkonen complains. Jenson Button was complaining. The two Williams

:12:05.:12:15.
:12:15.:12:26.

quite if you drive is getting in people's way. That is poor driving.

:12:26.:12:31.

Kimi Raikkonen was on a fast lap, there is no excuse. David has spoken

:12:32.:12:38.

about it, but he will get a penalty, so it is a good day for Valtteri

:12:38.:12:45.

Bottas, because one of the Williams will get in there. This is coming up

:12:45.:12:52.

behind Pastor Maldonado, the Jenson Button. Just coming towards the end.

:12:53.:12:57.

He has been warned previously for this. Coming to the end of the lap,

:12:57.:13:02.

he gets on his way, he complains. When they are complaining on the

:13:02.:13:12.
:13:12.:13:14.

radio, they know it will go to race control. Kimi Raikkonen had a harder

:13:14.:13:18.

time with Esteban Gutierrez, but Jenson Button, perhaps it is a sign

:13:18.:13:22.

of the old head, he wants it to be recognised that he should have been

:13:22.:13:32.
:13:32.:13:48.

Both your cars are out. Describe your feelings? It is not why we

:13:48.:13:54.

come racing. The boys are going to work really hard. We need to

:13:54.:13:59.

improve. These updates have not worked. Are there more fundamental

:13:59.:14:06.

problems that need sorting out? Is it a personal issue? That is not a

:14:06.:14:11.

question for racing. It is a question for the factory. You never

:14:11.:14:17.

panic in these kinds of situations. Formula One is so close - it is so

:14:17.:14:24.

tight. That is what it is like in Formula One. No case for panicking.

:14:24.:14:28.

Pastor Maldonado was holding up Jenson Button. What real thoughts?

:14:28.:14:34.

I did not see it. Jenson Button was quite vocal about it. We will wait

:14:34.:14:40.

and see what happens afterwards. Claire Williams was quite calm.

:14:40.:14:46.

Their right not to panic. However, they are in a tangle, aren't they?

:14:46.:14:53.

-- they are right. She is doing a brilliant job. She has taken over

:15:09.:15:19.
:15:19.:15:20.

ability and she will get there. Let's have a look at the Kimi --

:15:20.:15:28.

Kimi Raikkonen incident. This was absolutely blatant. Kimi Raikkonen

:15:28.:15:36.

keeps his cool. He does not yelp on the intercom to his team. He gets

:15:36.:15:41.

on and qualifies. He is ultra confident. He has a very good car

under him. I just asked who they thought it was going to be.

:19:56.:20:06.
:20:06.:20:06.

qualifying. Up the hill, past the fans on the hillside. Wonderful

:20:06.:20:12.

support. Down the hill. This is the other DRS zone. Both zones are

:20:12.:20:19.

being used this weekend. It might allow for a bit more overtaking on

:20:19.:20:26.

the circuit. Romain Grosjean is waiting to come out. He is using

:20:26.:20:34.

the softer tyre on this occasion. The Toro Rossos is out there again.

:20:34.:20:42.

All beginning to build up nicely. We will have to wait to see how

this turns out. Sebastian Vettel is He has already been on that tyre.

Hulkenberg is giving his all with the Sauber. The best qualifying he

:21:58.:22:04.

has had so far. He was on the grid with China. It is the first time he

:22:04.:22:09.

has got into the top 10 all season. We know Nico Hulkenberg has plenty

:22:10.:22:15.

of pace as a driver. Let's watch the last couple of corners.

:22:15.:22:21.

Reasonably tidy. The exit is crucial. That looked all right. A

final run towards the flag. Where will this put Nico Hulkenberg? He

:23:15.:23:24.

:23:24.:23:30.

tyres. He has done six laps on those tyres. Hamilton is locking up

:23:30.:23:36.

into Turn seven. He gets on to the brake pedal early. He is preparing

Lewis Hamilton has gone force. There is Sebastian Vettel. -- 4th.

:24:18.:24:24.

Romain Grosjean is fastest in the first sector. Fernando Alonso will

:24:24.:24:34.
:24:34.:24:35.

continue on his lap. He has lost a bit in the middle sector. A bit of

:24:35.:24:41.

a slide for Fernando Alonso. Now through the final turn. Let's see

:24:41.:24:49.

where it puts him. He does go fast. It is a tiny fraction of a second.

:24:49.:24:56.

His middle sector is not going to be good enough. He is 4th fastest.

:24:56.:25:01.

We heard the radio message for Mark Webber saying he had massive

:25:01.:25:07.

traffic from Filipe Massa. He will have to do another flying lap. He

:25:07.:25:17.
:25:17.:25:22.

is intense. Filipe Massa is in force. -- 4th. This is where the

:25:22.:25:28.

:25:37.:25:47.

They are more than a second off in this sector alone. -- do it. He

:25:47.:25:53.

will have more potential out of the car. They need a lot from a new set

:25:53.:25:59.

of tyres to have any hope of getting into the top 10. Not very

:25:59.:26:09.
:26:09.:26:11.

promising for McLaren at the moment. Fernando Alonso is fastest. Filipe

:26:11.:26:21.

:26:35.:26:36.

enough to tell him, do not touch anything! No concern down mad. They

:26:37.:26:42.

will be fitting a new set of tyres. It will be the last few moments of

:26:42.:26:46.

this session that determines who will make it into the top 10. He

:26:46.:26:56.

will be fighting for pole position. Will for -- will Fernando Alonso be

:26:56.:27:04.

able to deliver? Mark Webber has had two pole positions in three

:27:04.:27:09.

years. Let's not discount Kimi Raikkonen or Romain Grosjean. He

:27:09.:27:16.

has never had a pole position. Keke Rosberg and Louis Houghton did not

:27:16.:27:22.

show their true colours this morning. -- Lewis Hamilton. They

:27:22.:27:28.

are beginning to up the pace. The initial times are not looking

:27:28.:27:38.

promising. Away it goes the McLaren. A bit of a pause. -- a weight goes.

:27:39.:27:49.
:27:49.:27:57.

Mark Webber is heading down the pit the Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen back

out there will start they think the time is plenty fast enough. There

:28:07.:28:14.

was a new strategy. They are given the option on here. It looks like

:28:14.:28:20.

it will work for them in terms of not having to do any more laps.

:28:20.:28:27.

Look how slow the car is going round! The difficulty you have is

:28:27.:28:33.

the temperature. On the last lap he did not get DRS because you pulled

:28:33.:28:43.
:28:43.:28:43.

the paddle to learned. Do not pull the paddle too early. -- too early.

:28:43.:28:50.

That is a problem. You have to get past that checkpoint. They are

:28:50.:29:00.
:29:00.:29:02.

talking about the second DRS zone. Here we go! Adrian Sutil is on his

:29:02.:29:08.

way. He has a nice new set of mediums compound tyres to go out on.

:29:08.:29:18.
:29:18.:29:21.

Jean-Eric Vergne is in the top 10. There are two McLarens and two

:29:21.:29:28.

Force Indias just outside. There is a big gap in towns between Romain

:29:28.:29:32.

Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg. The top five maybe saved but beyond

:29:32.:29:41.

that, it is anybody's guess. -- may be safe. Sebastian Vettel is not

:29:41.:29:48.

fast enough. Less than a 10th minute. That has been the weak

time. Maybe he can pull that back a little bit. Sebastian Vettel to get

:30:15.:30:22.

into the top 10. He goes fastest. A fraction faster than a Fernando

:30:22.:30:32.
:30:32.:30:40.

Alonso. Mark Webber is trying to do this sector. Last year, he missed

:30:40.:30:47.

out on Q3. This time, he has gone fourth quickest. You would think

:30:47.:30:51.

that should be safe enough for him to get into the top ten, but it will

:30:51.:30:58.

be competitive. The clock is ticking away. Esteban Gutierrez down to

:30:58.:31:02.

10th, as he tries to get into the top ten for the first time. Nico

:31:02.:31:08.

Hulkenberg is still in there, just. We are waiting to see improvements

:31:08.:31:18.
:31:18.:31:18.

from Force India. Lewis Hamilton is on the cusp. He is out on the track.

:31:18.:31:21.

The first sector for Jean-Eric Vergne and Paul di Resta, exactly

:31:21.:31:29.

the same. That is how competitive it is. Let's see what the time is like

:31:29.:31:34.

for Esteban Gutierrez. He just holds on in 10th place, I think that could

:31:34.:31:42.

be under threat from Force India. Yes, Paul di Resta goes eighth,

:31:42.:31:50.

pushing Esteban Gutierrez down. Now, Toro Rosso. Daniel Ricciardo, not

:31:50.:31:54.

exactly safe, but much quicker than Nico Hulkenberg. Lewis Hamilton has

:31:54.:32:01.

been pushed down, so he needs a decent lap. Can Jean-Eric Vergne

:32:01.:32:07.

outqualified his team-mate? Not quite, but look how close they are.

:32:07.:32:11.

Adrian Sutil fails to get into the top ten, it is a blow for force in

:32:11.:32:17.

the. Nico Hulkenberg cannot quite do it. Adrian Sutil will be

:32:17.:32:24.

disappointed. You would expect Lewis Hamilton to make it through, yes, he

:32:24.:32:31.

has gone fastest, right over 0.6 seconds. Mercedes were hiding their

:32:31.:32:36.

pace this morning, and he has gone quick. What about McLaren? Jenson

:32:36.:32:43.

Button is 14th, Sergio Perez is currently seventh, so Sergio Perez

:32:43.:32:49.

has pushed Daniel Ricciardo out of the top ten. Jenson Button is down

:32:49.:32:56.

in 14th place. This is coming into the last chicane. He locks up into

:32:56.:33:02.

the turn. It is unlikely all of the time lost was in that last sector

:33:02.:33:09.

alone. That is a story, there seems to have been an improvement from

:33:09.:33:17.

McLaren to a certain extent. RADIO: We are 14th. It is the first time

:33:17.:33:20.

this year that Jenson Button has failed to get into the top ten. For

:33:20.:33:27.

Sergio Perez, only the second time he has achieved it, and the first

:33:27.:33:33.

time he has beaten Jenson Button in qualifying. Perhaps after the

:33:33.:33:41.

psychological boost of Bahrain. great performance. He has taken away

:33:41.:33:50.

Lewis Hamilton's impressive lap, but where did that come from? It was an

:33:50.:33:54.

amazing lap, and perhaps Mercedes are on for a hat-trick of pole

:33:54.:33:59.

positions. Daniel Ricciardo knocked out in the last moment. Both Toro

:33:59.:34:06.

Rosso cars knocked out. Disappointing for Adrian Sutil. Paul

:34:06.:34:13.

di Resta did well. Both of the Sauber cars are out.

:34:13.:34:16.

Not too much of a surprise about Sauber, but a big surprise with

:34:16.:34:22.

McLaren. Sergio Perez in, Jenson Button out. We are none the wiser,

:34:22.:34:27.

we are told that are good improvements, but Jenson Button has

:34:27.:34:34.

not made the cut. It is ridiculous. I do not quite understand the gap.

:34:35.:34:40.

He thought he would struggle to make Q1, he has said that all weekend,

:34:40.:34:45.

but you would not have expected Sergio Perez to go faster. Your

:34:45.:34:47.

first competitor is your team-mate, then you think about the other

:34:47.:34:53.

people. At the moment, Sergio Perez has demonstrated he has the fight

:34:53.:34:57.

and commitment to drag the car further up the field. Jenson Button

:34:57.:35:03.

needs to catch up. In Q1, Pastor Maldonado was out of that session.

:35:03.:35:09.

We can hear from him now. What a difference a year makes, you

:35:09.:35:14.

started at the front of the grid, but now you are out in Q1. This is

:35:14.:35:19.

Formula 1. A difficult time to Williams at the moment. We have been

:35:19.:35:26.

working very hard, but we are a bit too lost at the moment in terms of

:35:26.:35:36.

performance. The car is nowhere, it is very difficult to get 100% of the

:35:36.:35:43.

potential that we saw last year. It will be a very tough race, so we

:35:43.:35:46.

will see tomorrow what we can do. But it will be tough.

:35:46.:35:54.

Yes. We have spoken about Williams, let's move on to Force India. Paul

:35:54.:35:58.

di Resta seems like he is really on form at the moment. His fourth place

:35:58.:36:04.

in the last race has such an impact. He is full of confidence, he is

:36:04.:36:09.

buzzing about, he has had a commercial deal, that helps the

:36:10.:36:15.

drivers feel confident, and he is on top of his game. News about a Felipe

:36:15.:36:21.

Massa/Mark Webber incident. What is going on? We are on board with Mark

:36:21.:36:30.

Webber. You would have to say it would need to be looked at by the

:36:30.:36:34.

stewards, because there seems to be a bit of slowing down. What's Felipe

:36:34.:36:39.

Massa keeping up his pace? But he is on the inside of the track. It is

:36:39.:36:45.

one for the stewards. We will let you know what happens. Let's go back

:36:46.:36:49.

to another driver that is out of Q1, Max Chilton.

:36:49.:36:55.

Tell us about qualifying. I am quite encouraged, only a little bit of

:36:55.:37:03.

Jules Bianchi. I came out just behind the Caterham cars. But I felt

:37:03.:37:07.

the consequences of that later in the final sector. I just lost a bit

:37:07.:37:13.

of time, and that is the difference. I am encouraged, and I am looking

:37:13.:37:19.

forward to the race tomorrow. Commentary box, I wonder what you

:37:19.:37:22.

thought of that incident with Mark Webber? What's Felipe Massa slowing

:37:22.:37:27.

down? Unquestionably. That is the most

:37:27.:37:33.

clear-cut of all of the incidents. Felipe Massa clearly did not get the

:37:34.:37:38.

information that Mark Webber was coming. It is nothing malicious, it

:37:38.:37:43.

is just a mistake, but if you hold up a car that is on a timed lap, the

:37:43.:37:49.

stewards will give a penalty. Thank you. We had a chat about pole

:37:49.:37:54.

position, who we felt was going to take it, and I threw Lewis Hamilton

:37:54.:38:03.

in the mix. That was a cracker. touched everybody by surprise. In

:38:03.:38:08.

Mercedes, the boss is here, and the arch protector of all of the people,

:38:09.:38:14.

he knows how to win and bring the car to pole position. Do not be

:38:14.:38:18.

surprised to see Lewis Hamilton there. We have seen it for the last

:38:18.:38:22.

two races, they are great in qualifying but they struggle in the

:38:22.:38:29.

race. But give cannot write them off, North Red Bull. Most people's

:38:29.:38:35.

favourite is Fernando Alonso. Over a long distance, the Ferrari has a

:38:35.:38:38.

very strong performance, and I expect them to be in it at the end

:38:38.:38:44.

of the race. Here we go, here is Q1, the shootout.

:38:44.:38:50.

The tension is building here. Fernando Alonso has the support of

:38:50.:38:55.

the massed ranks of Ferrari fans, but pace out of nowhere from Lewis

:38:55.:38:59.

Hamilton, tremendous pace, and it was the final sector that he really

:38:59.:39:06.

seemed to gain. Nico Rosberg was also quick, but Lewis Hamilton was

:39:06.:39:09.

blinding. An incredible performance, it is difficult to imagine what they

:39:10.:39:16.

could have been holding back. The cars are working well at those

:39:16.:39:20.

speeds, we were talking about how that bodes well for Monte Carlo, I

:39:20.:39:27.

have always felt you get a good indication in the final sector. The

:39:27.:39:33.

big question, can they convert that into a front row or a good

:39:33.:39:36.

qualifying position? Can they hold on in the race, that is another

:39:36.:39:44.

story will stop a lot of tyre degradation. Gary, we were impressed

:39:44.:39:49.

by that lap time of Lewis Hamilton's, a big chunk faster than

:39:49.:39:55.

anybody else, what your thoughts? mega lap. If you get through corner

:39:55.:40:01.

free, then you have the confidence and the bike in the car, just that

:40:01.:40:08.

long corner, once you get to number four, it is another right-hander, so

:40:08.:40:11.

if they had the balance to get through there, that is what they

:40:11.:40:16.

had. Last year, he was flying in McLaren, but he had the time taken

:40:16.:40:25.

away from him. He was fastest by half a second, one though he has not

:40:25.:40:29.

had a pole position here. Today might be the day. Mark Webber has

:40:29.:40:34.

had a couple, Sebastian Vettel has never really shone around this track

:40:34.:40:41.

in qualifying. The Ferrari fans, loyal to the brand. In terms of the

:40:41.:40:48.

lap times, watching Kimi Raikkonen on his first run, it looks like he

:40:48.:40:52.

is on a brand-new set of the medium tyres. What did you predict we could

:40:52.:40:58.

see for pole position? Before the session, I thought 21.2, and it

:40:58.:41:03.

still might be, but if Lewis Hamilton can hang another one, he

:41:03.:41:10.

will be into the 20s. Do not count out Nico Rosberg, he was on the used

:41:10.:41:17.

medium tyres and he went faster on them. That was 0.2 quicker than on

:41:17.:41:22.

the brand-new tyres. A Mercedes front row is not out of the

:41:22.:41:28.

question. That would be something. R: The temperatures have sorted

:41:28.:41:34.

themselves out now, ten left front, 11 right front, and eight on the

:41:34.:41:41.

rears. The last team to get an all front row here was the origins of

:41:41.:41:49.

that team, in 2009, they have the front row. Let's see if Mercedes can

:41:49.:41:55.

achieve that. We can see performance from Ferrari and Lotus. A lock-up

:41:55.:42:03.

from Kimi Raikkonen. Let's watch the Lotus through here, it looks

:42:03.:42:11.

balanced and tidy. A big commitment from the Iceman. A late shift down

:42:11.:42:17.

in the middle of the corner. I would not have thought that would be his

:42:17.:42:24.

normal tactic. That cost him anything? He is just a bit airway of

:42:25.:42:32.

the fastest of all of the sect has from these qualifying sections.

:42:32.:42:37.

have seen him on the front row once this year, can he do that on this

:42:37.:42:40.

occasion? He has not made pole position since his return to Formula

:42:40.:42:47.

1. He has done so here in the past for McLaren and Ferrari. He is syrup

:42:47.:42:55.

or five seconds down on what Lewis Hamilton did in Q2. His final sector

:42:55.:43:00.

not quite as impressive as Lewis Hamilton's earlier. Mercedes have

:43:00.:43:05.

found something in the last qualifying section. Let's see if

:43:05.:43:12.

they can unleash it again. RADIO: Police box this lap, look after the

:43:12.:43:22.
:43:22.:43:24.

tyres on the in lap. He is up on the time. He is up on Nico Rosberg, or

:43:24.:43:32.

Kimi Raikkonen's time. There you are, Gary was spot on, Nico Rosberg

:43:32.:43:38.

had performance in hand, he is the first into 1:20. Here is the

:43:39.:43:46.

response from Fernando Alonso. He is slower than Mercedes. Suddenly,

:43:46.:43:49.

Mercedes are looking very good for a hat-trick of pole positions will

:43:49.:43:57.

stop will it be Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton? Romain Grosjean has

:43:57.:44:02.

been very fast in the first sector, but he does not sustain the pace. He

:44:02.:44:08.

is losing a lot in the final sector. What can they be doing to gain so

:44:08.:44:13.

much performance in the last sector? There has been talk about

:44:13.:44:17.

the hydraulic link between the front and rear suspension. Something is

:44:18.:44:27.
:44:28.:44:45.

final sector last year. Filipe than Kimi Raikkonen bond the

:44:45.:44:54.

initial round. -- on the initial round. The team is very happy with

:44:54.:45:04.
:45:04.:45:05.

that. They're just separated by a few hundredths of a second. This is

:45:05.:45:09.

for the 5th round of the World Championship. Mercedes is on top at

:45:09.:45:15.

the moment. We're still waiting for Lewis Hamilton to do a lap. Mark

:45:15.:45:22.

Webber is a double winner in the past. Can he get Red Bull back up

:45:22.:45:28.

there? They are the leaders in the Constructors' Championship at the

:45:28.:45:32.

moment. Mercedes have been fast in qualifying in the last couple of

:45:32.:45:37.

events and have not shown the race pace. They have put in a huge

:45:37.:45:43.

amount of effort to improve on that. Only the drivers will know if they

:45:43.:45:50.

think they have enough in hand. If they do not, there is nothing more

:45:50.:45:55.

depressing than trying to attack a time which seems beyond your

:45:55.:46:03.

balance or the cart is capable of giving you on the a day. -- the car.

:46:03.:46:07.

Sebastian Vettel has been on the front row at a couple of times in

:46:07.:46:13.

the past. He was 7th on the grid here last year. They did not have a

:46:13.:46:20.

particularly good weekend. They had to change the front wing structures.

:46:20.:46:28.

The Engineer of Kimi Raikkonen is rehearsing to be a lollipop man!

:46:28.:46:35.

The track is completely empty. Not for much longer. Sebastian Vettel

:46:35.:46:41.

is on a brand new set of the median compound tyre. It looks like Kimi

:46:41.:46:47.

Raikkonen will go out as well. He does indeed. We are getting ready

:46:47.:46:55.

for the shoot-out. Both have Renault engines. Who will end up

:46:55.:47:01.

with the pole position? In terms of engine power on this circuit,

:47:02.:47:07.

Renault are top dog. They have had nine pole positions, compared with

:47:07.:47:17.
:47:17.:47:19.

seven for Ferrari and four for Mercedes. That could change today.

:47:19.:47:27.

Just a few litres of fuel on board. Enough to complete a casual out

:47:27.:47:37.
:47:37.:47:39.

apples dub look at that! -- alt lap. They will have to play around a bit.

:47:39.:47:47.

With these tyres, you do not need to drive hard out laps. The main

:47:47.:47:54.

concern is radiating heat into the brakes. There will be residual heat.

:47:54.:48:01.

That will pull off. There will be a light touch in the cockpit. It

:48:01.:48:05.

shows when they are at the correct temperature will start you do not

:48:05.:48:15.
:48:15.:48:20.

want to beat on cold brakes. -- temperature. All 10 cars are out on

:48:20.:48:25.

track now. We will start with Sebastian Vettel. We are riding on

:48:25.:48:31.

board with him. Down towards turn one, we will listen into his

:48:31.:48:40.

throttle action. Up that is a shame. I wanted to see if he was truly

:48:40.:48:47.

flat on that transition. It looked lovely none the less. It it looked

:48:47.:48:55.

tidy and accurate. -- it looked tidy and accurate. Kimi Raikkonen

:48:55.:49:01.

is even quicker. It is the final sector where Mercedes is so strong.

:49:01.:49:07.

We have not seen that response from Lotus or Red Bull. Let's ride with

:49:07.:49:15.

Kimi Raikkonen now. Let us listen in nine. Very late shift in the

:49:15.:49:21.

middle of the corner. That is his style. He is coming down to the

:49:21.:49:26.

second checkpoint. It is all about the final sector of the lap.

:49:26.:49:32.

Sebastian Vettel is not quite as quick. If he can string all three

:49:32.:49:37.

sectors together, maybe he can still challenge up front. Red Bull

:49:37.:49:46.

will challenge to get pole position. He has had two pole positions here

:49:46.:49:54.

already -- already this year. He goes third. We wait for Keke

:49:54.:50:00.

Rosberg to come through. Lewis Hamilton also on track. He is not

:50:00.:50:05.

up on his intermediate time. A not great in the first and second

:50:05.:50:15.

sector. He is damp a 10th in each one. -- he is down. Let's see what

:50:15.:50:23.

the lap time is like. That is the fastest. Could Nico Rosberg be on

:50:23.:50:29.

for back to back pole positions? Lewis Hamilton goes second fastest.

:50:29.:50:34.

Fernando Alonso is on a lap. I do not think it will be enough to

:50:34.:50:39.

challenge for the front row of the grid. Filipe Massa has just gone

:50:39.:50:46.

quick in the middle sector. That has to be disappointing for

:50:46.:50:53.

Fernando Alonso. Filipe Massa there is one thousandth slower than

:50:53.:51:00.

Fernando Alonso. Paul di Resta air goes to 10th. Mercedes has claimed

:51:00.:51:06.

a hat-trick of pole positions. They have taken the entire front row in

:51:06.:51:11.

front of the boss was it looks like they had been working their

:51:11.:51:14.

strategy of concentrating on where they have been struggling this year

:51:14.:51:20.

on brace pace. They have trained the fuel and gone out and taken

:51:20.:51:29.

pole position. -- race pace. order, the South, Sebastian Vettel,

:51:29.:51:39.
:51:39.:51:45.

Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Paul di Resta. Well done! The last

:51:45.:51:51.

two with Bahrain and now here in Barcelona, he has delivered the

:51:51.:51:56.

stuck Lewis Hamilton will line up on the front row of the grade. --

:51:56.:52:04.

he has delivered. It has been done quite a few times here in history.

:52:04.:52:09.

Statistics say, if you start up front on the Spanish Grand Prix

:52:09.:52:14.

circuit, you have a huge chance of winning the race. Michael

:52:14.:52:18.

Schumacher won it from third. It is one of the only times it has been

:52:18.:52:22.

won from anywhere other than the front row. Mercedes is in

:52:23.:52:26.

tremendous shape going into tomorrow's Grand Prix. It is Nico

:52:26.:52:32.

Rosberg who has delivered his third career pole. He has never qualified

:52:32.:52:37.

in the top five before but he has delivered the 12th pole position

:52:37.:52:45.

for Mercedes as a construct her and to have delivered the hat-trick as

:52:45.:52:51.

well. This team has made a huge leap forward. That was a great

:52:51.:52:58.

performance. Assured in the middle and last part of qualifying. He is

:52:58.:53:04.

taking his time to get out and release himself. Sebastian Vettel,

:53:04.:53:11.

and there is a steady. He is looking at the times. He is third

:53:11.:53:21.
:53:21.:53:24.

was a Kimi Raikkonen was in 4th place. -- he is third. Suddenly

:53:24.:53:32.

Fernando Alonso is in 5th. Romain Grosjean is in 7th. Still a good

:53:32.:53:37.

effort from Sergio Perez. Maybe the McLaren updates have worked a bit

:53:37.:53:42.

because Sergio Perez has managed to acquire by the force India. Stories

:53:42.:53:50.

all the way down the top 10. These two guys with team-mates when they

:53:50.:53:54.

were cutting in their teenage years. They have delivered the front row

:53:54.:54:02.

for the first time for Mercedes in the modern era. Fernando Alonso is

:54:02.:54:08.

not too sad. Still a waif for the crowd. The record books strongly

:54:08.:54:15.

favour a win from the front row at the Catalunya circuit. The racing

:54:15.:54:25.
:54:25.:54:25.

in 2013 has been far from A sensational qualifying session.

:54:25.:54:32.

We can grab a quick word with Nicky ladder. A great days so far.

:54:32.:54:39.

cannot complain. Lewis Hamilton did it already pulls up to have both

:54:39.:54:48.

cars there, thank you to the teams and the drivers. Have a nice day!

:54:48.:54:55.

The last time this was achieved was no less man then your own designer.

:54:55.:55:02.

Can you actually pull of the win here tomorrow? We will do our best.

:55:02.:55:12.
:55:12.:55:13.

Let's wait and see it. Thank you. He is in trouble. You are in

:55:13.:55:19.

trouble. Let's hear from Ross Brawn. Huge congratulations and in front

:55:19.:55:27.

of the boss as well. We have not always given the boss a lot to

:55:27.:55:35.

smile about. It is just qualifying. The big event is tomorrow. Tomorrow

:55:35.:55:41.

is what counts. Some people have been surprised by the pace of the

:55:41.:55:45.

car, particularly through sector three. You never know what others

:55:45.:55:50.

are running. This weekend, we have been having to focus on Ray's work

:55:50.:55:57.

because that is where we have been poor. We did a lot of work on fuel.

:55:57.:56:04.

Our drivers are using the tyres very intelligently. Not pushing too

:56:04.:56:11.

hard in sector one. Are you confident you had better tyre wear

:56:11.:56:20.

than in Bahrain? Not entirely. The when not on top of it as much as we

:56:20.:56:26.

work in the qualifying. -- we were not. Tomorrow it is what counts.

:56:26.:56:32.

you think you can win? I do not know. Some teams are in better

:56:32.:56:39.

shape on fuel. Maybe we have made enough progress overnight. Ross

:56:39.:56:43.

said it, they are great in qualifying but they are still

:56:43.:56:48.

struggling a little with race pace. They thought of us a bit today and

:56:48.:56:54.

maybe they are fooling us tomorrow. We must not underestimate what

:56:54.:56:58.

Lewis Hamilton has brought to this team. We can see how McLaren is

:56:58.:57:06.

struggling as a result of losing him. They up on the front rows. We

:57:06.:57:14.

know that 20 of the 22 races have been won from the front row. Let's

:57:14.:57:19.

hear now from a very disappointed Jenson Button. The first time this

:57:19.:57:27.

season you have not managed to fight it out. Tell us how you are

:57:27.:57:34.

feeling. From where we are, the card did not feel too bad in the

:57:34.:57:43.

first qualification. -- de car. It felt right. In the second, I did

:57:43.:57:49.

not have the grip on my last run. We are having a look at it now as

:57:50.:57:56.

to whether the pressures were set correctly. Maybe they were. Are you

:57:56.:58:01.

surprised that Sergio Perez is still out there fighting? I am.

:58:01.:58:05.

Compared with what I had been balance and pace. They did

:58:05.:58:14.

everything right. Let's have a quick look at the lap of Jenson

:58:14.:58:19.

Button and go to the commentary box. Can you take us through and tell us

:58:19.:58:29.
:58:29.:58:35.

what is going on with Jenson He had to open the steering in the

:58:35.:58:45.

middle of the corner. No big event which would confirm what Jenson

:58:45.:58:52.

Button was saying about the car feeling not too bad. Again, no

:58:52.:58:58.

mistake so far up on this lap. Throwing it down into Turn seven at

:58:58.:59:04.

100 miles an hour through the apex. Let's listen as he goes into nine.

:59:04.:59:08.

The contrast between turn three, it looked like he had a bit of

:59:08.:59:16.

understeer. That late shift down into first gear we get so used to

:59:16.:59:20.

hearing now as they try to energise the floor as much as possible. A

:59:20.:59:26.

lot of steering into turn 12. This is where Mercedes has been so

:59:26.:59:32.

mighty this afternoon. Not pretty at low speed. It confirms what

:59:32.:59:38.

Sergio Perez was saying. They are struggling for traction. He did not

:59:38.:59:43.

seem at all confident as he bounced his wake over the kerbs. No big

:59:43.:59:53.
:59:53.:59:59.

mistake on that lap. Sergio Perez is the new man coming at McLaren.

:59:59.:00:04.

Jenson Button needs to up his game. Behind the scenes, there is no doubt

:00:04.:00:11.

there is a people in the management and board level. It filters down to

:00:11.:00:17.

the people, they do not feel comfortable. Until they get cohesion

:00:17.:00:21.

and get everybody pulling together, which they are not doing now, and it

:00:21.:00:27.

might take somebody strong, but it needs to have one direction, and it

:00:27.:00:33.

needs to happen quickly. You are talking about the structure. We talk

:00:33.:00:37.

about the car and drivers, but it is a bigger goblin? You have got

:00:37.:00:44.

diversification, you have got an automotive, it is a problem. McLaren

:00:44.:00:49.

never had this when they were going forward under Ron Dennis. Hugely

:00:49.:00:56.

successful, what has happened? I do not like a couple of key points.

:00:56.:01:01.

It has been a huge workload from the team this weekend, one car in Q3,

:01:01.:01:11.

what did you think? Firstly, in Q2, they did a fantastic job, a really

:01:11.:01:18.

good run. We could have been tactical in Q3 and kept some new

:01:18.:01:23.

tyres for the race, but he was driving so well, we thought we would

:01:23.:01:33.
:01:33.:01:33.

go for it. In Q3, he was 0.2 up at halfway, but he lost time at the end

:01:34.:01:41.

of the lap. Given that our car is not quick enough, you would applaud

:01:41.:01:47.

him what a great job he did. Disappointing for Jenson Button. We

:01:47.:01:50.

have not looked at the data, but his tyre pressure might have on too

:01:50.:01:58.

high. Hopefully, he would have gone through as well. We are fighting to

:01:59.:02:03.

get through to Q3, it is not where we want to be. We have got to work

:02:03.:02:09.

hard, we have been working hard, but we have got to carry on to get up to

:02:09.:02:15.

the competitive levels we expect. Lots of hard work for lots of teams.

:02:15.:02:19.

A quick prediction for tomorrow? Everybody would like to see what is

:02:19.:02:27.

happening at Mercedes. They are both great. We are not going to have time

:02:27.:02:32.

to go to the press conference in this show, but you can catch up with

:02:32.:02:38.

the reactions and interviews online. Don't forget, following us,

:02:38.:02:48.
