The Canadian Grand Prix - Practice 3 Formula 1

day in Montreal and what a difference 24 hours makes. Yesterday

's, it was cold, rain in the air but it suited Fernando Alonso and

Ferrari. In the afternoon the sun came out and it was Lewis Hamilton

who was fastest in his Mercedes. The top of the championship is Nico

Rosberg who is four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton. With half of the

points in third place is Fernando Alonso. Daniel Riccardo in fourth

and Nico Hulkenberg in fifth. In the constructors, Mercedes have 240

points after just six races. Ferrari have not won a race since the

Spanish Grand Prix last year. McLaren have been struggling. In the

pit lane we have Jenny and Tom. What is happening out there today, Tom?

It is beautiful conditions. I have been speaking to the teams and they

say we will see some quick lap times. Temperature is in the early

30s which is where it was at the end of yesterday. But because there is

no cloud cover, the tax -- track temperature will get warmer so the

tyre temperature will not be an issue and it will be a quick

session. The teams will be dialling their cars into these better

conditions than yesterday. That is the Ferrari garage, Fernando Alonso

not looking to disappointed. You can get involved in the session through

social media. We will try to read out as many as possible in

commentary. Or you can go to our Facebook page. It would take a brave

person to be betting against Mercedes? Absolutely right.

Everybody is expecting Mercedes to dominate because it suits their car

so well in terms of the entire package? It is perfect, they have

mechanical grip and the car is good over the kerbs and the bumps. We

have always known since the beginning of the year they have

straight line speed. The battle is, who is going to be third as opposed

to who will be on the front row. It showed Red Bull and Ferrari will be

in the hunt and some of the other teams, customer teams the Mercedes

might be in the battle, the likes of Williams and McLaren. There were

some good formance is it yesterday and we will look at those. But what

glorious picked should we bring you with the sun shining in Montreal.

The blue sky is reflect ring with the Bluewater. It is a perfect place

and Jackie the Bluewater. It is a perfect

Stewart described it as a jewel in this seaway. It is a bit more

difficult than some circuits, but we are close to downtown Montreal and

it is an opportunity for fans to get into the grandstand and there are

some good viewing places. The car is getting ready for this final one

hour session. They had two 90 minute sessions on Friday. Lewis Hamilton

fastest overall on Friday. Quicker time is coming from the second

session when they used the super soft tyre. Hamilton ahead of Nico

Rosberg. Third place was Sebastian Vettel. But Raikkonen and Alonso

both going well. Then the two Williams and McLaren. It was team

order in terms of those top performers yesterday? Yes, no

question about it. Williams were a team that were looking good. They

looked good in terms of pace will stop but also in the long runs,

Felipe Massa was very good, able to keep his tyres with the car. Tyres

around here, you have a lot of acceleration, long corners and hard

acceleration from low gears. But Williams looked to be in good shape

for that. The question with Williams has been their race pace against

their practice pace. Hulkenberg was only 13. But they put together a

very impressive race run. Massa did a good long-distance run for once.

It is one of the problems for the mid-grid area. They need to be able

to qualify well and use the good starting position to use the race

pace to their best advantage. If you don't qualify so well you are using

your race pace to get back where you think you should be. Williams have

struggled and had one or the other but not both. Also, Force India. But

both of those teams you can see into the top ten, but fighting for a

podium position if things go their way. Sergio Perez had a podium

finish in Bahrain. It is a circuit like this Montreal circuit of stop

and go. Force India like this track, but they were saying

yesterday it is about getting the tyres to work effectively on this

tarmac. It is a load grip surface? It is, but the circuit is not used a

lot so every time Formula One comes here, Friday is effectively cleaning

up the dust and dirt that has been lying on the track for nearly a

year. When it comes down to Saturday morning. But there is more rubber on

it then. The kerbs are very big here so you need to use that

it then. The kerbs are very big here advantage. The temperature yesterday

was lower than expected and they were struggling with a front tyre

temperatures. We saw some fantastic thermal imaging. You can see the

tyres getting colder on the straight then heating up re-free on the

corners. A few cars out already, getting their initial installation

lap. What we can look forward to at the end of the session is bolting a

new set of super-soft tyres to get a simulation. We can see you is likely

to be challenging and the advantage Mercedes will have today. We are

expecting Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to be fighting it out. When it comes

to it, Mercedes will have the edge, the question is by how much? Ferrari

have made a step forward in terms of aerodynamics. They have a new floor

on the cart which seems to be working better. They were swapping

between the two drivers. It was Kimi Raikkonen who had it in the

afternoon. It seemed to work for them both. Also the engine upgrades

are important because you have this them both. Also the engine upgrades

big, long straight coming down towards the pit. But I don't think

they have made enough of a gap so I think Mercedes are a little bit

ahead. Sebastian Vettel was impressive yesterday, closer than

expect it. They won here last year, off pole position but this is a

different world to 2013. This is a man-made island, done for Expo 67.

Now it is used for the Canadian Grand Prix for many years and we

hope it will be used for the Canadian Grand Prix for many years

to come, if the rumours are correct. Several places here we have talked

about already, it is critical to get your line to perfection. It is a

street track, but you have a bit more space. But in some places you

have not much space and you are up against the wall. That is the nice

part about it, it is an old style circuit. It is lined with walls and

areas and if you get it slightly wrong, then it does right. The other

thing is, it does generally create some good overtaking and some good

races with long straights and the hairpins. Fernando Alonso waving to

fans and the marshals. Always a huge amount of Ferrari support in Canada.

We have seen some great races over the years but it is a long way since

Ferrari had a victory here. Michael Schumacher had a string of success.

Jenny is with Ferrari now. Looking at the rear of the car. What they

have done, Fernando is coming in now, but they have changed the

setup. Yesterday they had a new floor on this car. They have changed

dramatically and gone back to the old setup. In front of the rear

wheel the bodywork ends up rapidly and there is a gap to the rear

suspension. They had a longer tailpipe yesterday to see if they

could use the gases differently. But they have reverted back to the old

type, which is interesting. It we can look at the pit wall, you can

see on the end there is a nice man sat there called David Lloyd. He was

part of the test team for Harare. He has come back this weekend to try to

see if they can help Kimi Raikkonen with some of the communication

issues he has been having between himself and his chief race engineer.

He works well with English people so be see if it helps him this weekend

and then maybe moving forward David will become a permanent part of the

race weekend. Thank you, Jenny. Good to see him back. Kimi Raikkonen

needing that bit of assistance. Kevin Magnussen coming through the

final chicane, where we have seen so many people brush the wall. I think

it was pretty clean yesterday, but the other wall was hit by Jules

Bianchi? As we see Kevin coming towards the real chicane of the lap

and the exit of this one, Jules Bianchi, who was the hero in

Monaco, hit the wall. But the wall of champions, the last corner, the

paint on the side of that is very clean. At you of your comments

coming in. Someone saying, what has gone wrong with McLaren after such a

strong first race? Let's go back to Melbourne and the start of the

season. Magnusson scored a brilliant podium. In the end it was a second

place with Ricciardo's exclusion and Jenson Button was third. Ever since

then it has been hard work for the team? Melbourne was the surprise

because they had a strong run. The car has always been good in

Melbourne. What surprised me, their performance relative to Mercedes has

actually got worse per lap, per kilometre. It has got worse as the

season has progressed. Even though they got a point in terms of lap

time performance, pure speed in the car, it was nowhere near where it

should be. Melbourne was about other teams not maximising it as much as

McLaren doing a stunning job. Lotus coming away with points in the last

couple of races but they have had a difficult start. Maldonado has only

got out of the first sector of qualification one time and that was

Monaco. Then the car did not start because of a fuel pump problem.

Grosjean did score some points there and the previous race, but this

event they know they are coming in on the back foot. It is a car slower

in a straight line and slower in corners. But they

in a straight line and slower in of the changes they made since

Monaco have been beneficial. They are learning a lot every weekend.

Preseason was a nightmare, they could not get the car out of the

garage. Even at the first Grand Prix, Friday was always written. But

latterly they have got a bit of reliability and they have been doing

big managers over the weekend trying to catch up. They have had

definitely a stunning results from Grosjean in Barcelona when he

dragged the car into the points. I think this weekend will be tough.

They don't have straight-line speed and he has not got much low speed

grip. Marcus Ericsson on track. Kobayashi had raking issues trying

to get the tyres to warm up. Ericsson getting used to this

circuit for the first time. Good result in Monaco last time for

Ericsson, finishing 11. But it was a clip by the fact Jules Bianchi went

to score some points that were forgotten about. But this rookie

driver from Sweden, Marcus Ericsson, has kept his nose clean.

The mistake he made in Monaco which affect did Felipe Massa was when he

crashed into Felipe Massa during qualifying. But is probably the only

serious mistake we have seen so far from Marcus Ericsson as he has

stepped up into this first year. It has not been an easy car to step up

into. Alan, talking about when drivers make that move from a junior

formula, if you are getting into a car at the lower end of the field,

it is a bit of a mind Scrabble. You have come from winning in the lower

categories, then you are at the back struggling to get the thing to go in

a straight line? There are very restricted characters

in development in the junior category. Formula One is a much

bigger organisation. The lower grade teams don't have all of the assets

available to simulate to -- simulation systems, and the driver

has got to take a bigger, active part in directing the team forward.

If he doesn't have the experience to be able to do that, or some of the

skill sets prepared for it, it is a hard world.

We saw Sebastian Vettel a few moments ago, there he is once

again. Bastion Vettel and Donal Riccardo

saying they needed more edge. You can see he is just sat there

watching the large screens in this new, revised garage. He has much

better access to those greens and we have much better access to us

watching them. There is no room for imperfection. You can see some of

the guys scrabbling around. They have changed some of the bodywork on

the car. If you have a look at the back, maybe you will be able to see

it, especially when it goes out on track. It is incredibly tight

fitting this weekend. They have had to change the floor on the car as

well. It hugs that exhaust like none of the other cars, spectacular to

pretty relaxed. Let's have a look at what Kevin Magnussen has been up to.

He sorted that out pretty effectively.

Just clipping those kerbs, the red and white of the kerb, that big

white section behind it. If you get onto it it is OK, if you get onto a

little bit more it kicks the front of the car out.

Daniil Kvyat had a tough day yesterday, only managed nine in the

second session, they had a fuel leak, had to sort that out. Missing

by clubs because he is new to this circuit, not a track they can come

and test out, it is only used for the Grand Prix event itself. I know

you are watching by the side of the track at one stage earlier

yesterday, Allan, and he is looking recovered out there.

Very committed. We were standing just add the entry to the final

chicane that he is going to come down to in the second or two. At the

end of this back straight where you are doing 200 mph, hit the brakes

and flickered through over the kerbs. It was a fantastic place to

watch. You can see the difference between the rebel cars and the

Mercedes, and then there was a bit of a step -- Red Bull cars. When you

go down to the likes of Sauber that is when they were struggling, they

couldn't hit the kerbs with the same sort of aggression, all a bit too

lively. Some good shots of the Sauber which

doesn't ride the kerbs as well, doesn't soak them up.

It reacts to every little input whether it be the driver input on

the throttle or the steering, or the radio.

Vibration. How bad is it? You can stop now or we can get them

rebalanced? It will be OK. A little bit of feedback from Jenson

Button, it will be a new set of tyres, and usual they could get them

rebalanced. The thing about here, with all of

the long straights, you do feel the vibrations significantly more lap in

Monaco where the average speed is much lower. Therefore if you do have

something it amplifies it and especially into the likes of here,

you are breaking, trying to make the car in.

They are coming back to the Sauber, the car looked difficult to drive,

reacting to every single thing. The circuit didn't have the inherent

grip. If you're struggling to get to Britcher...

Talking about the Sauber, it is the other one.

He has lost it on entry on the right-hand kerb, spun into the wall

on the outside. Let's see what has happened, we are

riding on board, let's pick it up. Just lost it on entry, hasn't

soon as he started to turn on, the soon as he started to turn on, the

rear of the car started to overtake different and instead of aborting

the corner and going straight across the grass, he hung onto it may be a

little bit too late, you can see the left rear with all the dust getting

blown up, dirt on the circuit. Soon as you get your wheel onto that

stopped. Gutierrez out of lock their full top even though the car spun

therefore the team. That impact was taken by the rear, first of all,

that will have gone into the gear box. That is always a worry for top

if you have to change that you end up with a penalty on the grid. Not a

good start for Sauber. A mistake by Gutierrez in Monaco costs Sauber

what could have been absolutely crucial points, he admitted that

error, clipped the crucial points, he admitted that

has been a tough couple of weeks. Very, very tough. But the car is

tough to drive. It is something we have seen through the course of this

year, it has not had the strength in performance or the consistency it

had last year. They have been working hard, Adrian Sutil has had

few incidents through the course of the season for top city areas has

quite often outperformed him but in the last two weeks it has not been

his time. We are riding with the on-board

camera, they were very quick to recover the car. This does remind me

of a sad incident last year with Gutierrez and the marshal died in an

accident when they were recovering his car for soccer was that part of

the circuit. A very unfortunate incident.

Memories with him, a lot of the marshals are wearing black armbands

this weekend in memory of Mark Robinson, a tragic mistake made as

they recovered his car. Just looking at the damage, a bit of damage on

the rear wing, you can see the crumpled left rear tyre. Let's have

a look at it in real-time. Immediately, just fighting very

likely with the wheel as he starts to turn in. As soon as he has turned

the corner it started to go. He wasn't able to get it back. It had

gone too quickly, in reality, for him to abort the corner and go

across the grass. Difficult start for Sauber, the red

flag on this session at the moment. Hopefully we will see a restart.

Just over 30 seconds. Quick to get the car out of the way. The session

a few moments. Thank you for your comments and questions. Callum says

both Williams and Force India looking good but who will come out

on top this weekend? I think there will be quite an interesting one.

Williams would seem to have the faster car in qualifying, Force

India, they have the edge in racing but it could be very even handed.

You could probably bring McLaren into that group as well. Red Bull

might still be ahead of those Mercedes customer teams that we will

have two say, it will be tough for Red Bull. They need perfect laps. We

are waiting to see Sebastian Vettel do any flying laps. Hamilton has

done an installation lap but no time set. Kevin Magnussen currently

fastest. Hulkenberg second stop those times are a bit meaningless at

this stage, much to early to draw any judgement. A couple more of your

questions coming in. A nice one from Mike, how do the 2014 F1 cars

compared to the Lemond 's sports car prototypes for performance?

They have closed up considerably, it is a different regulation base will

stop you have got pretty much open regulations in sports car racing,

with certain total limits. You also are allowed to have different tyre

manufacturers. There is an element of tyre development programme.

Formula One car has got significantly less downforce, tyre

grip, is just under 200 kilograms lighter. Those 200 kilograms make an

effect. These cars have got to do a two-hour race whereas in Lamont it

is 24 hours. -- Lemond 's. It will be a little strange going

back next week, not driving, but you have other duties.

It will be fantastic. I am going to have a really nice night sleep for

the first time since I was ever there. Going back as the reigning

champion, but without having to do the race, now that I have hung up

the helmet, it will be different, but there are plenty of duties to

keep me occupied. We all hope you have a good weekend.

Focusing on what is going on here in Canada at the moment, the Renault

engineers looking busy as they try and get their teams to get some

extra pace on his long straights and get their teams to get some

speed. When you are doing those sorts of

speeds, four times around the map, you will have to throw out the

the sky. It will ramp up, get hotter and hotter. I think the teams will

be pleased they are not having to do 70 laps today because that really

would be a real test, particularly if there is no safety car for the

breaks tomorrow. We have seen, years ago, in the

early days of carbon discs, we saw cars go out of this race with

exploding desks or massive amounts of dust and where coming from them,

and cars having to retire because of its stock they are pretty top of

that. Jean-Eric Vergne skating with the wall, did he tragic? A bit

further around the lap -- did he touch it. He is a little bit I rate.

Pretty strong yesterday, his long-running wasn't as quick as a

Williams, for example, or even the Red Bull, but it was running, a very

good account of himself up the pressure of Daniel Kvyat has been a

good thing for him. Traffic, I think, that is what he

was reporting. There are quite a lot of cars, 14 on track. Caveat going

well, set a new middle sector time faster than anybody else. Lewis

Hamilton on the track, going to complete his first flying lap. It

will not be particularly significant. Daniil Kvyat is likely

to put in a quick lap. He goes third with that. Maybe learning a little

bit by following Lewis Hamilton who is always rapid around the circuit.

We go on and on about Hamilton's record. Nico Rosberg has only ever

been out-qualified once himself and that was by Lewis Hamilton last

year. He always out-qualified Schumacher when they were team-mates

Jenson Button jumping over the right-hand curve. Both of them, this

year, have been separated by about one tenth of a second, every

session, all the way through. If you look at the pure numbers record they

don't necessarily tell a total storage, it has been Hamilton's

circuit in the last few years. Half a second quicker than the current

best of errors. -- Perez. We have got the thermal camera

on-board Hamilton's car. You can see the breaks glowing nice and hot on

the left, that is a break straight ahead looking into the side pod, the

radiator area, where all that heat from the engine is being dissipated.

You can just see the top of the tyre as well for top on fastest, lap.

Tom, you have got something to add to that? Speaking to Rosberg after

the session yesterday. He was really pleased. He said early on his

breaking wasn't where he wanted it to be. He said he wasn't happy with

the front brakes in particular but by the afternoon he was much happier

with his brakes. He says he thinks he can challenge for pole position

this afternoon. That is good to hear. Kimi Raikkonen has just gone

fastest. What is Fernando Alonso up hear. Kimi Raikkonen has just gone

to? He is on his first flying lap at the moment. He is in the

to? He is on his first flying lap at think he is building up for a quick

run now. Out of the final corner, that is where they go for it. Alonso

does go fastest straightaway. The pace resort being developed by

Ferrari yesterday seems to be repeated. I don't think it will be

enough to challenge Mercedes but it is giving the other is a bit of a

scare. Hamilton has taken a big chunk of the time, gone half a

second faster than Alonso. We will see what Alonso does on his next

lap. Max Chilton has stopped at the end of the pit lane, so there is a

problem. They are putting him on the trolley jacks. Marussia at the other

end of the pit lane, so it will take a long time to get him back. Bit of

a lock-up for the Toro Rosso. No major drama. 26 minutes of this

session, we have a red flag for the incident Esteban Gutierrez. But he

seems OK. Jenson Button is seventh fastest at the moment. Kevin

Magnussen is eighth fastest. Hulkenberg is ninth. Looking out

Felipe Massa in the Williams. Someone is asking why Williams has

been struggling despite a promising start and despite having a Mercedes

engine? I think the problem with Williams... TEAM RADIO: we saw the

lock at the turn. Bit of a description to Perez. I think

Williams have had a car faster in qualifying but it is looking after

the rear tyres. The car has lacked a bit of downforce, but it might not

be a factor this weekend? They have definitely had good performance at

times but sometimes they have not maximised the way in which they have

run the races. Kimi Raikkonen gets close to the outside wall as he

comes close to the start and finish line. It is frustrating. Most of the

teams have got themselves into a position where you know what the

general running order is. If you do have a reasonable reliability, it is

in the first four races of the year. We are only 30% through the season

but we know who is quite and who isn't now. , Rosberg comes across

the line puts him fourth fastest. Raikkonen, lovely shot of the car

getting out of shape. Fun to view. Definitely out of shape. This is

where Gutierrez crashed. He locked the front. Sutil is struggling with

his Sauber later on in the lab. We get some good shots in Canada.

Someone is asking do the team still do the rat race? All of the teams it

used to build rats and raise them across the rowing lake. This was the

Olympic base in the 1976 Olympics. A lock-up for Sebastian Vettel. But

no, they don't do it any more. It is all the more serious and there does

not seem to be time to do things like that. 2009 was the last time

they did it and there were just two entries. After that it fizzled away.

Lewis Hamilton has done fastest first and second sector. He is going

to come through to, first and second sector. He is going

I am sure to put himself further ahead. Williams are the quickest in

the speed traps. Every speed trap yesterday, they were quickest.

Hamilton using the kerb that he has set a good time. 1.61 from Hamilton,

not quite yet, just a miniscule fraction slower. TEAM RADIO: what is

the problem? We will get something sorted. What was the problem? Did

not quite catch it, I think it is something to do with tyres. This is

one area where the Mercedes car looks good, it absorbs the kerbs

better than any other and allows the driver to short cut the circus and

allows the driver to go across. It tended to be Rosberg yesterday on

the first curve. Rosberg has gone fastest. Not quite quick of an

yesterday but they are on the harder tyre. We are down to the same level

of performance but on the harder tyre. We are thinking about a three

quarters of the second gap between the two types of tyres this weekend?

It was strange to get the number out of it yesterday. That was the

prediction from Pirelli. But in the longer runs, they looked to be able

to generally get there and equal it with the soft in comparison to the

super-soft. But now at 34 degrees on the track, the air is staying cool.

Has a bit of a wind, but the track temperature, the son is beating down

on it. Great view of the Red Bull. It does not observe the kerbs very

well. It is a shame we did not get the slow motion earlier. That was

the correction in the corner as well. When you think of the speeds

they are doing and the precision required when they come out to the

edge of the circuit, almost all four wheels onto and over the kerb. That

is the best, I don't think that particular view, but Mercedes, it is

the best car over the kerbs. We were talking about Adrian Sutil. Look how

much gap he leaves coming out of the corner, he is hardly touching the

kerb, let alone going onto the green. That is because he does not

have the confidence to go near that commitment in the chicane. Daniel

Ricciardo was only 12 fastest, but it is not representative of what he

is capable of doing. Let's see what the lap is like. He is seventh

quickest with that at the moment. Vettel is 11th fastest. Christian

Horner telling us they may end up finding fifth and sixth places.

Probably capable of more than that, because in qualifying trim, the Red

Bull has been impressive all season. We just have to wait and see what

happens when we get on the super-soft tired towards the end of

this session. Nobody lighting up the screens just yet. A fraction slower

than Hamilton's first sector. Rosberg gained his advantage in the

final sector and that is where he gets his 1.16 1.20 from. Just coming

out of the first little sequence. On board with Lewis Hamilton. TEAM

RADIO: Nico is now practice one, one 10th in the last corner.

the opposite lock. It is a fraction, six hundredths of a second behind.

It just shows again there is absolute fractions between the pair

of them. Joining us now is Christian Horner. Beautiful sunny day. We have

just seen Kevin Magnusson spinning off as we come to you. Looks as

though the car has stayed out of the barrier. Give us a summary of things

from your point of view, how did the first day go and what shape are you

in? We had a sensible day yesterday. Trying to find the balance between

straight line speed and the corner. It is a premium on straight-line

speed here. Both drivers got a good feel and we made some setup changes

overnight and we are trying them now. We saw some good performances

from Ferrari yesterday, have they made a step forward? I think they

have. Williams are very competitive here on the long runs. We had them

down as the quickest car with Massa yesterday. I think they will be a

threat. Mercedes are looking very competitive. We have just seen

Hamilton go even faster. Looking at a replay of Kevin Magnusson getting

it wrong at the first corner. We have been talking about how some of

the cars absorb the kerbs here. McLaren and Mercedes in particular,

read or looks more stiff, would that be correct? I think you are probably

right. Mercedes have always ridden the kerbs here very well. As have

McLaren. The drivers are feeling the car on settled over the kerb, but it

is finding that compromise. Christian, it is Alan, you said

yesterday you thought fifth or sixth was where you are aiming, but with

Sebastian Vettel running in third, are you reassessing that now? If we

can get in that area with the cars, that will be a good result. If we

can get on the third row, it is a realistic opposition for this

afternoon. Finally, the forecast, we are looking at higher temperatures

and again for tomorrow? It does not help us that much because we like

lots of rain and wet conditions. But it is a beautiful weekend and it

looks like it will be hotter again tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for

Interesting to hear Christian Horner's comments on Williams

yesterday. The teams have access to more data than we have and can do a

more studied analysis and work out the fuel loads. It was interesting

from Christian comment he sees Williams being a threat? It is not

just Massa, it was Bottas. fast and had good straight line

speed. They have a racing ability. If they are behind someone they can

overtake on the straight. They are five kilometres quicker than anybody

else on the straight. That has a detriment in the first sector where

there is quite a lot of corners. But overall it is a good package.

Williams are third and fourth at a moment. Alonso is fifth, Ricciardo

is sixth. Button is 11th, Maldonado in 12th and then Vergne, Perez,

Sutil and Kvyat. Grosjean, Chilton and he is ahead of Kobayashi. Y had

a difficult day, crushing in the morning and then problems with the

car in the afternoon. There has been an improvement from Ericsson in the

caterer. The slowest today is Esteban Gutierrez who crashed out of

session early on. Just over 20 minutes to go. Beginning to get into

the window of opportunity to run the soft tyre. Kimi Raikkonen is

mounting some of those super-soft tyres and is out onto the track in

his warming up lap. This will give us an indicator of the difference in

time between the tyres and the relevance going into qualifying? It

is a better indicator than yesterday when it was tricky to read.

Raikkonen has got a fast car. He was fourth quickest in the second

practice yesterday. Just ahead of Alonso. Feeling comfortable,

currently on the back straight dropping back from Kobayashi. There

is the man himself, Kimi Raikkonen. dropping back from Kobayashi. There

He is on the super-soft tired. This will be used in qualifying. Let's

watch the lap with Kimi Raikkonen and see how the Ferrari development

will help him. He has won this Grand Prix in the past but has never

qualified on the front row. It seems strange when you think of the

success he has had over the years when he was driving for McLaren and

Ferrari in particular, during his first stint. How is that looking? He

is a quarter of a second down at the moment at the first split, but I

would expect the second lap on this tyre to be better. It still needs a

bit of running to get them totally up to speed. He is starting to get

on with it, now he has done three quarters of a lap, he is kicking up

a bit of dust. This is the place he has to be careful with a cooler

tyre. You can very easily lock up the tyre if it hasn't got the

residual dripped all the way through to the core. It is not as great

putting the softer tyre on as you would get at other tracks.

He has gained nine tenths of a second, but it has only put him

third overall. That is the extent of margin Mercedes have. Even putting

the super soft tyre on, he is no quicker than the Mercedes were, he

is nearly a second slower than Hamilton. Ericsson locked up and got

on the grass, he managed to get back on to the track and came to a rapid

stop. That was the yellow we saw, Romain

Grosjean at the same corner, not getting onto the grass but having a

look around. You can see the white patches on the tyre, the flat spots,

he has locked up the tyre. Kimi Raikonnen still the only driver

to have gone out on the red super soft tyre as yet. Valtteri Bottas on

circuit. Let's hear more from Tom. I have

circuit. Let's hear more from Tom. and they are saying that these

higher haemorrhages will help the soft tyre this afternoon in

qualifying because it is designed to work in a higher working range. He

said in terms of difference between lap times, you are looking at an

average of 0.7, some cards yesterday were only seeing an improvement of

about half a second, other teams were seeing an improvement of 0.9.

It will be fascinating, he said, over the race distance, they are

getting no where problems with either tyre. This afternoon, just

who can do what of which tyre. Expect all the top teams to get

through Q1 on the soft. This is the same section we saw

Ericsson and Romain Grosjean. Exactly the same corner. He got a

little bit on the dirt that Ericsson kicked onto the side of the circuit

and dipped the wheel onto the grass, it looked like he had got caught a

little bit. You are right on the limit, you come underneath the

bridge, you hit the brakes about the bridge area, you are trying to let

the car float into the corners, releasing the brake pressure and if

you get it slightly wrong, there is less grip than you expect for

whatever reason, we have seen three drivers into laps suggest there may

be something there. Raikkonen backed off and did a slow

lap. Took 12 seconds of his QuickTime. Also doing another slow

lap, whether that was because he he was in the first sector Mustang. I

wonder if he will put in another quick lap? She'll Bianchi is up --

Jules Bianchi. We are seeing how they are working,

to slow laps, that is also recharging a hybrid energy system,

making sure it is at maximum capacity to utilise the fast lap.

Now coming round to the first sector. Getting a very good

indication, he is to tenths slower than his first timed lap at this

particular point. Suggesting the tyres maybe have gone away a little

bit with his fast lap and his two cooldown laps.

Still might be in the ballpark. Went into deep.

Just locked up the right front, went in, got a little bit out of shape.

The compromise their, the acceleration down into the hairpin,

not so much the engine to the corner, but didn't get as clean and

exit, because he was a little bit out of shape in the middle. Looking

at the rear tyres, they have got a little bit of graining down the

centre part. After 1.75 laps, they are already looking a little bit

marked as he was accelerating coming down the chicane.

Here he comes, down through the last quarter, very smooth, he doesn't get

any oversteer on the exit of the corner, is it any better than his

1:16 .5? No, clearly the tyre doesn't come together for a second

flying lap, particularly if you have already done to slow laps. -- two

slow laps. Very different yesterday in that

respect, the track temperature is 35 degrees, it started about 30, 31.

That has an effect. Still waiting to see anybody out on

the super soft, work going on on the front of Lewis Hamilton's car. A bit

of setup work, interesting set of changes, suspension changes going

on, and the Mercedes, leading into qualifying. They are allowed to

change whatever they like before we get into qualifying, but once the

green light comes on, in qualifying, it is effectively in park for me and

they cannot change the car from that point on unless it rains and they

can make some minor changes. He has got super-soft tyres on. They are in

their tyre blankets will stop he will becoming offer a quick lap in a

moment. Just watching Bianchi come across the line. Just gone quicker

than children. -- Chilton. Kobayashi is in the 20s. Nico Hulkenberg, he

has scored at every Grand Prix so far this year, along with Fernando

Alonso and Nico Rosberg, the only driver to have achieved that. In the

points each time. I wonder if he can maintain it here in Canada. Their

race runs were looking good but their technical director yesterday

were saying they did have a lot of thinking to do. Clearly they had a

good race car but they were worried about their single lap pace and were

going to have to think about whether they changed their philosophy.

Overtaking is quite possible here, isn't it?

They have been very good at running 1-stop less than everybody else in

the race. That is partly because they had to because they quite

qualify as well as they would have hoped for. Hulkenberg, especially,

has grabbed the points out of the car. He has been able to get the car

into positions where you wouldn't have expected given the qualifying

performance. They don't have the one lap pace, as we have just seen he is

half a second off after the first sector and you would expect him to

draw back even further now as he comes into the second. This will put

him up into two or three tenths behind Kimi Raikonnen.

Such a competitive area. They will all be in that area. Hulkenberg's

best qualifying has been seventh place. His team-mate had a fourth on

the grid in Bahrain where they ended up having a dice between the two of

them and Perez emerged with a fine, podium finish. Not as quick as

Raikkonen in the end. That puts him in fifth place, quite some way off.

It may be Force India will have to look to the race rather than

qualifying. RADIO: I think some changes. Understood.

He likes it, he has traded out, harder tyre. -- tried it out on the

harder tyre. Fernando Alonso is the next driver out on the super-soft

tyre. Three tenths of in the first sector in comparison to Lewis

Hamilton. As he goes through the second sector he is another 10th and

a bit down, but this looks like now we are on with Fernando Alonso, he

is exhilarating at the hairpin, comes down the long straight towards

the final chicane, this will put him into third place on a minimum.

Can he challenge the times Mercedes have done on the harder tyres? You

would hope you would get up amongst them. He is third, behind the

Mercedes, three tenths slower than Rosberg. He is on a tyre that should

have given him a decent bit of extra speed. Hamilton is out now, so is

Rosberg, on the super-soft tyres. We will really get an idea of how fast

the Mercedes can do. Rosberg, the first of the two on the lap.

Hamilton has only just come out onto the circuit. We will get a bit of an

idea for stop the first sector, Rosberg not quite that quick.

We have seen this on a few occasions where they build up the tyres in a

different way to other people, they sometimes do quite a slow first lap

and then it is a second lap where they get really into it. The other

thing round here is to make sure... RADIO: looking into it, we will have

it sorted. Something went on at the garage.

Jenny, do you have an idea? I withstood by his car as he was going

to leave the garage. The guys signalled for him to drive away,

usually they drive away at a relatively high speed but he coasted

out, it sounded like he couldn't engage gear. He coasted as far as

the end of the pit lane, the team came out, they were ready to go and

retrieve him, and he went out onto the lap. I'm not sure what problem

was. Incredibly slow, snail pace out to the edge of the pit lane.

That is interesting. He is busily to the edge of the pit lane.

concerned about that. They are working on, make sure it doesn't

happen again. At the end of the day when you have got a rivalry as

intense as this any little mishap between either car could end up

making a massive difference in the championship. What is happening

further down the pit lane at Red Bull?

At least Lewis Hamilton was going at a snail space out of the pits

because Sebastian Vettel is currently going nowhere, he is

looking as data in his cockpit. Still a lot of work going on with

his car. The mechanics are very busy indeed. What is going on with the

soup is -- Super-G soft tyres? Rosberg has done another reasonably

slow lap. Lewis Hamilton, 15.6, they are building up, trying to get a

gap. Now there are quite a lot of cars on the circuit. Rosberg coming

down the back straight. Marcus Ericsson is going into turn one. It

looks like this people have a clear run. Adrian Sutil is putting in his

qualifying simulation comic that is watching and breaking up --, let's

watch him breaking. He crashed out of the tunnel in the Monaco Grand

Prix, that led to the safety car during the race. It led to the fact

Hamilton was never able to challenge his team-mate. Hamilton is up on the

split times on his super-soft tyre, just set a new fastest middle

sector. He has got a clear run, shouldn't get too much stop Adrian

Sutil will jump a little bit. Let's see what he does, he goes from

mating .2 is to 17.9, he only gained three tenths of a second -- 18.2.

Let's see what the gain is on the super-soft tyre? No gain, he is

slower. Isn't that interesting. The final sector, he didn't put in a

particularly quick final sector, let's look at what Alonso did. He

went straight on. These temperatures are as Thomas telling us sitting the

harder of the two tyres really well. The quick tyres seem to be coming

from those tyres rather than the super-soft. Even on one lap,

struggling. They seem to be at the moment. If

you don't get it on the peak of the lap, if for whatever reason you get

traffic or something, the other thing is if the tyre is starting to

move underneath you, a funny feeling, it is like you're sitting

on top of a sponge or something, you don't have the feeling that the

tyres with you when you turn into the corner. It takes a little bit of

time to settle and get the grid. Sometimes the harder compound, it

links in and takes you through the corner.

I think Felipe Massa will go quick on the super-soft tyres. 16.8 so

far, he gains for tenths of a second so he does gain a bit of speed.

Valtteri Bottas found the same. Kobayashi's car being moved out of

the way, problems there. He had done a good first sector then suddenly

slowed in that sector. Implies some thing has gone wrong with the car.

For tenths gained by Williams, Mercedes not being anything but

Rosberg did do a quick lap but he was a tenths slower than he had been

on the soft- Williams seemed to be getting more out of the softer tyre

than Mercedes. Some teams, depending on how the car works it looks like

it could be a cross over between them. They put on the super-soft and

expect it to be faster. The car does not react in the same way. Hamilton

had a nice long run on the super-soft and we thought it was

fantastic. Then he put the soft on, which is the harder of the two and

went quicker. Admittedly with less fuel in the carb but it is not as

clear-cut as expected. Tom, I believe you are with Ferrari? I

wanted to update what they are doing. Well everybody is hanging in

lap times, Ferrari are just going through the pits doing prep this

starts. Interesting tack Tick. It starts here, and it is a short run

to the first corner. Ricciardo has just gained six tenths on his

super-soft run. Maybe Mercedes are not showing us what they can do.

Keeping it a bit in their pocket? Forgot to say. Whereas is 12th

fastest. Hulkenberg is ninth. It looks like Force India will struggle

to qualify well. It is Mercedes, Williams, Ferrari and Red Bull. That

kind of order. A mix-up between the different team-mates but Mercedes

are 12, and Red Bull are currently fifth and 13th but we have not seen

Vettel do his soft tyre run. Jenny? I have just been speaking to some of

the tyre guys at Mercedes and I asked the question could it be the

fuel load. That has been ruled out. Yesterday Mercedes had problems with

degradation with the super-soft, more than any other team so it might

be the way they are using them. So they reckon they are better on the

soft tyres. Interesting, whether that leads to different tyre use

this afternoon, we will wait and see. Massa, that is his fastest lap

of the session. Watching him yesterday in the last chicane, he

was changing up a gear right on the second apex? His team-mate wasn't

initially but later it in the session he started to do it. He was

using the engine, as we see Kobayashi sitting at the side of the

circuit. He was using the engine braking to bring the car up to gap

the procession towards the apex and then having to short shift a little

bit to get clean out of the second part. Mercedes are on top but there

is an interesting situation with how they use the tyres and if other

teams are getting more out of the softer tyre. Maldonado comes out of

the last corner. He has done a one .17 .6 and moves up a little bit.

Puts him just ahead of his team-mate, Romain Grosjean. But we

are yet to see Grosjean's run on the softer tyre. He is in 16th place at

the moment. He has done a slow lap on the soup soft tyre. Certainly

McLaren not showing the same competitiveness as they did

yesterday. One teams showing a competitive level is sorrow Rosso

with Kvyat in eighth and Vergne in ninth. It looks like they are in the

mix of it just ahead of Force India with Hulkenberg in 11. It is close

between Kvyat and Vergne. We have a yellow flag out there but you're

watching Jules Bianchi. It is all clear now, so he will not get a

problem. Bianchi is 18th but has just done 1:18.5, six tenths

slower... TEAM RADIO: is it worth trying another time lap? Will we

improve? That was interesting, Magnusson does not think he will

improve. Impressive stuff from Kvyat again because he had limited laps

and he is a first-time visitor to this track. Vergne loves this

Montreal circuit. The chequered flag is out, Grosjean is up to 13th but I

think Lotus will be struggling to get into the top ten.

worry to hear that comment from Kevin Magnussen when yesterday it

was so promising? Yesterday they were quick out of the, but they

reached the level quickly. Things have evolved, track temperature has

gone up and they seem to be able to get to their performance level by

practice to. Williams will be happy and as Christian Horner told us,

they are keeping an eye on the Williams team and Massa confirmed

that with a 1:16.02 split the two said he is. Will he be having a bit

of luck for a change? In Monaco he was taken out in qualifying right

Marcus Ericsson. He is due a bit of luck. Mercedes first and third.

Ferrari showing promise from yesterday may deliver. They have had

one start from the second row of the grid this year, but Alonso is

fourth. Ricciardo in fifth and I think it will be interesting to see

what red all can do. Raikkonen his sixth. Outside the top ten we have

Hulkenberg and Magnusson. Both Mercedes powered cars. I had

Grosjean, Perez and Maldonado. Button is in 16th place. Sutil is in

17th ahead of Bianchi he was just slightly faster than Max Chilton.

Ericsson was quicker than Kobayashi, but we saw him soft on what would

have been his fastest lap on the super soft tyres. Gutierrez went out

earlier on in this session with a crash. The only car to crash out in

this session. Allen, quick thoughts from you? I think Mercedes are

ahead. Whatever they are doing with the tyre side of things, they have

speed. But the battle for the second row is good with Williams, Ferrari

and then I think you can probably expect one of the rebels. Not sure

both of them but one of them could be fighting in that mix as well. It

will be a tight battle for the last part of Q3. McLaren need a good

nullifying performance. Felipe Massa is satisfied with his work. Can he

take the challenge to Mercedes? Do Mercedes have a problem getting the

best out of the super-soft tyre. The only two cars who did not do their

best time on the super-soft was the Mercedes. Maybe the extra downforce

they get from the car over works the tyre. We will find out later on in

qualifying. Nice to see Massa up there, but nice to have a battle on

our hands. We did have a read like from Esteban Gutierrez. He lost

control and could not keep it out of these unforgiving walls. Lots of

Mexican fans here supporting Gutierrez and Perez. Lots of work

ahead for the Sauber team to do. They have not had a podium this

year. They had a podium two years ago thanks to Perez. Not much time
