Good morning and welcome to Monza. As you can see it is a glorious day

:00:00.:01:09.

in Italy. We are just outside Milan and it is always great to be here at

:01:10.:01:14.

such an iconic circuit. The tifosi are here in their thousands to cheer

:01:15.:01:19.

on their beloved Ferrari. As well as all the on track action we will be

:01:20.:01:22.

live for 30 minutes after the chequered flag falls with drivers

:01:23.:01:28.

passed, and present, and all the news coming out of Mercedes and

:01:29.:01:31.

rumours of changes right at the top of Ferrari. Since Spa headlines have

:01:32.:01:36.

been dominated by Mercedes after Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton came

:01:37.:01:40.

together. Whether you think Nico Rosberg was the good guy or the bad

:01:41.:01:45.

guy, he was the one standing on the podium and increasing his lead in

:01:46.:01:50.

the Drivers' Championship. Now 29 points separate him and Lewis

:01:51.:01:54.

Hamilton. Daniel Ricciardo has three wins to his name which means he is

:01:55.:01:58.

just 35 points behind Hamilton. Fernando Alonso is fourth, Bottas

:01:59.:02:03.

fifth, Sebastian Vettel is yet to lead a race this year let alone win

:02:04.:02:09.

one. In the constructors Mercedes have a huge lead, 411 points.

:02:10.:02:15.

Williams are fighting to take third place from Ferrari. McLaren have

:02:16.:02:19.

moved ahead of Force India since the last race but only by two points.

:02:20.:02:26.

Standing in a sunny pit lane today, Tom Clarkson and Jenny Gunn. It is

:02:27.:02:30.

not sunny where we are standing actually, we are in the shade. But

:02:31.:02:34.

you are right, it is a balmy 23 degrees down here. For the teams, it

:02:35.:02:38.

is the track temperatures they are concerned with, which is now 31

:02:39.:02:45.

degrees, nearly 10 degrees more than yesterday, so we could see the rear

:02:46.:02:48.

tyres being worked harder, so we could see more oversteer. Visually

:02:49.:02:54.

it could be quite good for us. But the emphasis this morning will be on

:02:55.:02:58.

qualifying. 11 times in the last 14 years this race has been won from

:02:59.:03:01.

pole position which makes it statistically more important to

:03:02.:03:04.

start than Monaco from pole position. Lewis Hamilton only

:03:05.:03:10.

managed to 16 laps yesterday afternoon, he had a problem, they

:03:11.:03:14.

could not fire up his engine. And that was the engine they used in

:03:15.:03:19.

Hungary which caught fire, so they managed to repair it. It is a Friday

:03:20.:03:23.

engine, he will not be using that today. He will have to use his

:03:24.:03:28.

team-mate Nico Rosberg 's macro information to get the best of his

:03:29.:03:36.

car. He says that is the -- that is fine, they have similar cars. He set

:03:37.:03:41.

the fastest time of the whole day on the hard tyres yesterday, which is

:03:42.:03:45.

pretty unusual. He will try his best to gain the time he missed out on

:03:46.:03:49.

yesterday, preparing himself for the all-important qualifying. It is in

:03:50.:03:53.

fact all-important because Lewis Hamilton has not had a clean

:03:54.:03:56.

qualifying session since Spain and that was all the way back at the

:03:57.:04:00.

beginning of May, it is incredible. He will need a clean practice three.

:04:01.:04:05.

The cars are on track shortly, so let's head to the commentary booth.

:04:06.:04:11.

COMMENTATOR: Thank you, we have a lot to look forward to today.

:04:12.:04:14.

Although we talk about the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg, there

:04:15.:04:19.

is an opportunity for somebody else. Williams looked strong and they may

:04:20.:04:22.

not qualify quite as sharply as they did in Austria, but we need to keep

:04:23.:04:27.

an eye on them. Their long run pace is very good and they were the

:04:28.:04:29.

quickest car yesterday intends of race pace. The key for them is being

:04:30.:04:35.

in the fight in qualifying. We have seen them much better in that area

:04:36.:04:44.

through the last few Grands Prix. Red Bull need to be good. They have

:04:45.:04:53.

resurfaced the banked surface with concrete to keep it alive. We will

:04:54.:05:00.

see some interesting images from that on the BBC Formula One coverage

:05:01.:05:03.

over the course of the weekend. Stay with us for all the qualifying life

:05:04.:05:07.

and the full race coverage on BBC One. First practice of the day,

:05:08.:05:14.

practice three of the weekend, and one apiece for Lewis Hamilton and

:05:15.:05:17.

Nico Rosberg in terms of topping the times so far this weekend. But Lewis

:05:18.:05:21.

did have that truncated session and ended up second fastest in second

:05:22.:05:26.

practice yesterday. Kimi Raikkonen having a slightly stronger weekend

:05:27.:05:29.

so far, and generally Ferrari have been looking better than they have

:05:30.:05:32.

at some previous events. Raikkonen was third and Alonzo was fourth in

:05:33.:05:37.

yesterday afternoon 's session. Rumours that they have improved

:05:38.:05:40.

their power plant a bit, got a bit more performance. There are four

:05:41.:05:46.

straights where you are over 200 mph here, so you need straight-line

:05:47.:05:50.

speed and power. They have been a little bit more competitive so far.

:05:51.:05:54.

Kimi Raikkonen, especially since Spa, when he seemed to find his feet

:05:55.:06:00.

with this, and looks stronger in comparison to Fernando Alonso this

:06:01.:06:04.

weekend. Always wonderful to see the cars out for the morning session

:06:05.:06:06.

with light dappling through the trees. That is such a part of racing

:06:07.:06:11.

at Monza, trees everywhere. It is part of a massive park, huge area,

:06:12.:06:15.

something like three times the land area of Monaco. And we are just in

:06:16.:06:20.

one tiny corner of this part. It is a beautiful area. When you come up

:06:21.:06:26.

into Ascari chicane, the shadows of the trees blocked out the braking

:06:27.:06:29.

area and the bumps coming up into it, so you have to be careful. The

:06:30.:06:34.

rear of the car can easily lock-up and destabilise. We saw that with

:06:35.:06:38.

Sergio Perez yesterday morning and Friday when he locked the rear

:06:39.:06:41.

wheels coming in. Shadows create that extra problem. Well, there is

:06:42.:06:47.

Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari. Jenny, any news coming from the

:06:48.:06:51.

Italian team? Absolutely. As the guys at the back of the carpet ready

:06:52.:06:56.

to put that right flow is paint all over the car, the news is they have

:06:57.:07:01.

played their joke and Ferrari, so both cars have changed their gear

:07:02.:07:06.

ratios especially for Monza. There was some question as to whether they

:07:07.:07:10.

had done it for Spa, but they have done it for this weekend. We thought

:07:11.:07:14.

this might be one of them because it is such a fast paced circuit, so

:07:15.:07:17.

that's exactly what they have done. Good information. This year they are

:07:18.:07:22.

allowed to change ratios just a couple of times. It is a fixed ratio

:07:23.:07:28.

gearbox nowadays. In the old days and in other forms of racing you can

:07:29.:07:31.

change your ratio for each particular track. Daniil Kvyat, as

:07:32.:07:37.

you can see from the graphic, is now on to his six engine, which means he

:07:38.:07:41.

will have a ten place penalty on the grid for the race tomorrow. He will

:07:42.:07:45.

go through qualifying as tomorrow but whatever he qualifies in, ten

:07:46.:07:50.

prizes will be added. Back to gear ratios, you have been studying it?

:07:51.:07:55.

Yesterday when I was watching the on-board, Mercedes were only using a

:07:56.:07:59.

skier once per lap down the main street, whereas pretty much

:08:00.:08:04.

everybody else was using a skier three to four times per lap. -- they

:08:05.:08:20.

were only using Aix gear -- eighth gear. There is no clear logic in

:08:21.:08:25.

exactly why Mercedes are doing it at the moment. It means they change

:08:26.:08:30.

here less, so from that point of view, they are going up and down the

:08:31.:08:34.

gearbox less, so it might be a real liability thing. In terms of

:08:35.:08:37.

performance it does not seem to be an advantage. Are they ending up

:08:38.:08:44.

with different ratios, so Williams and Mercedes and Force India are not

:08:45.:08:48.

all doing the same thing? Force India seem to have slightly longer

:08:49.:08:51.

ratios, more in line with Mercedes but all of the other teams in to

:08:52.:08:56.

have the shorter ratio. It is one of those things, variables. Different

:08:57.:08:59.

philosophies, different theories behind it. But it is a clear, clear

:09:00.:09:05.

difference. On the start finish great, Rosberg going down the pit

:09:06.:09:09.

lane, you will change to his final eighth gear right at the end of the

:09:10.:09:11.

pit lane, whereas the other teams are right at the beginning, quite a

:09:12.:09:16.

difference. Right now he is using first gear, doing the practice start

:09:17.:09:20.

in the designated area at the end of the pit lane, here. Clutch bite

:09:21.:09:26.

point check, making sure it is all activated. You did not make a

:09:27.:09:31.

particularly good start from pole position in some ways last time out

:09:32.:09:37.

at Spa -- he did not. And that poor start initiated the events that led

:09:38.:09:43.

to him clipping Hamilton. The poor start was the total reason. He was

:09:44.:09:49.

on pole. That's strange. He locked up the front right. He has done the

:09:50.:09:54.

practice start and instead of flash spot in the tyre, we saw Jenson

:09:55.:10:00.

Button doing a big one yesterday, instead of flat spotting the tyre

:10:01.:10:04.

and damaging them with 55 minutes ago, better to abort. Is this a bit

:10:05.:10:10.

of an experiment for him? If he is on the front row tomorrow, did not

:10:11.:10:14.

looked like he was hammering it down there, one of the hardest things for

:10:15.:10:21.

the guys to judge is where to break, first lap, tyre is not fully a full

:10:22.:10:26.

load of fuel, one of the toughest decisions of the whole weekend.

:10:27.:10:33.

RADIO: A slight delta on the temperature, more braking to get

:10:34.:10:37.

them up. That will be the reason he locked the front. The difference in

:10:38.:10:44.

temperature of side to side. One will be more efficient until the

:10:45.:10:47.

whole car is up to temperature. The right front would be the one that

:10:48.:10:52.

had more temperature into it causing that, on a slightly cold surface.

:10:53.:10:56.

Coming back to it, it is very difficult, it was a problem in Spa.

:10:57.:11:07.

RADIO: We will look into that. Should be fine, but we will check

:11:08.:11:11.

that out. It feels pretty bad, to be honest. Long and soft. That is not

:11:12.:11:19.

what you want, because you are breaking just under the bridge into

:11:20.:11:24.

Ascari. You need a solid feel and solid feedback, because these

:11:25.:11:27.

braking areas are very short but very intense, pulling over five G,

:11:28.:11:32.

putting 120 kilograms of force into it. The feedback through the foot is

:11:33.:11:37.

something that is very critical and something I was always very

:11:38.:11:40.

particular about. Clearly Kevin Magnussen has that sensation as

:11:41.:11:45.

well. So it looks like years staying out there, but it is something they

:11:46.:11:48.

will address presumably. -- looks like he is. It would normally be a

:11:49.:11:54.

question of bleeding the breaks, but these days it is a bit more, dated.

:11:55.:12:00.

I guess it is to do with the hydraulic system. Yes, as he locks

:12:01.:12:07.

up the front right, exactly as Nico Rosberg did. It is more on the

:12:08.:12:13.

hydraulics side of things. Generally you plug it into a system that will

:12:14.:12:16.

push all of the fluid completely through. You want to get the old

:12:17.:12:21.

fluid out in case there is something with the fluid as well. Seems a bit

:12:22.:12:25.

slippery at the first chicane, doesn't it? Talk us through this as

:12:26.:12:30.

he came down. He has gone down through the gears, down to third

:12:31.:12:33.

gear, and at that point he locked up the right front. I think we will see

:12:34.:12:38.

lots of it, into the chicane and second chicane more than anywhere

:12:39.:12:43.

else. Those two corners you have big, heavy braking. Both corners a

:12:44.:12:48.

little bit bumpy. The problem is that you do not realise you are

:12:49.:12:52.

going too fast, and you break later and your deceleration is not quite

:12:53.:12:55.

good enough until you are at the point of turning. RADIO: The gears

:12:56.:13:02.

are still not right. Box, box, box, just reduce the amount of shifting.

:13:03.:13:08.

Little bit of discussion about the gears on the Mercedes of Nico

:13:09.:13:11.

Rosberg. Just riding with Jenson Button. Kobayashi currently fastest,

:13:12.:13:16.

not often we see a caterer at the top, and now it is the other one --

:13:17.:13:35.

a Cape -- Caterham. Now Alan, you have done a special piece for our

:13:36.:13:38.

coverage later today about the changes at Parabolica, how did

:13:39.:13:48.

Button's line look? He was on the tarmac site. Luca arrived with his

:13:49.:14:00.

son in tow, maybe a future Ferrari driver. Jensen, still a fast time,

:14:01.:14:08.

eight tenths off the quickest we had yesterday in second free practice.

:14:09.:14:12.

Ultimately I still think this is build-up from Jenson Button. So,

:14:13.:14:17.

crossed the line goes Nico Hulkenberg now to go on to go onto a

:14:18.:14:22.

quick lap. Jenson Button is fastest from Kirby Ashy, Ericsson and

:14:23.:14:26.

Magnusson, and again, Hulkenberg does not lock-up quite as much.

:14:27.:14:32.

RADIO: Bit more break warming if you can, mate. Tyres look good. The

:14:33.:14:38.

issue you have around here, such long straights, everything cools

:14:39.:14:42.

down. And then you have an intense activity when you hit the brakes. If

:14:43.:14:48.

they are not at the optimum, 200 mph, where Hulkenberg was at that

:14:49.:14:52.

speed coming into the second chicane, he is doing 90 metres per

:14:53.:14:56.

second. So therefore it is all concertinas about one of braking and

:14:57.:14:59.

everything has be at the optimum level. Alternatively you get these

:15:00.:15:05.

little lock-ups and run wide. This is something we will see in the

:15:06.:15:08.

first part of the session as opposed to the second part. Hulkenberg on a

:15:09.:15:12.

reasonably good lap here at the moment, so we will keep an eye on

:15:13.:15:14.

that. You can share your thoughts with us

:15:15.:15:24.

by tweeting us or commenting on the BBC Facebook page. We have the

:15:25.:15:27.

Formula One website as well. So the best of your comments will be added

:15:28.:15:31.

to that. It is good to have your contribution as we build up towards

:15:32.:15:35.

qualifying here at Monza and it is live coverage on BBC One at 12. 10.

:15:36.:15:43.

Join Suzi and the gang and looking over the controversies of the last

:15:44.:15:47.

race at Spa. The contact between Hamilton and Rosberg which has been

:15:48.:15:51.

talked about ever since. Button still fastest here. Hulkenberg with

:15:52.:15:55.

that lap going second fastest and that man there is the guy who is the

:15:56.:15:59.

engineer for Sergio Perez, but next year will be Sebastian Vettel's race

:16:00.:16:04.

engineer. So a shift from team and he will be working with the four

:16:05.:16:11.

time world champion. Vettel's engineer will be having a more

:16:12.:16:15.

overall engineering role at Red Bull. He will be stepping out of his

:16:16.:16:20.

current position where he has been active and sin on news with

:16:21.:16:23.

Sebastian Vettel and the success there into a bigger position. This

:16:24.:16:30.

is all part of the restructuring after Adrian Newey. This is the

:16:31.:16:33.

first race where he has not been directly active into the Red Bull

:16:34.:16:36.

and they have to build for the rue ture and Rocky is a -- future and

:16:37.:16:42.

Rocky is a big asset and they will want to move him up the ladder. He

:16:43.:16:47.

was the engineer of Paul di Resta last year and Paul was a big, big

:16:48.:16:52.

fan and says he is without doubt able to step into Rocky's shoes.

:16:53.:17:02.

Adrian Newey won't be attending anymore Grand Prix this year. It

:17:03.:17:07.

will be a new era for the team and Sebastian Vettel, of course,

:17:08.:17:11.

struggling a bit. He is in a chassis, it is not a brand-new

:17:12.:17:17.

chassis, it is one that's been recycled effectively and it is a

:17:18.:17:21.

different chassis to the one he ran at Spa. Button has gone faster on

:17:22.:17:30.

that initial time he did. Vettel on this lap will keep an eye on. It

:17:31.:17:34.

will be close in qualifying today and fractions of a second separating

:17:35.:17:41.

the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari and maybe McLaren. Over the race

:17:42.:17:46.

distance, Red Bull and Ferrari are looking stronger than McLaren, but

:17:47.:17:50.

very, very even. So we could see Vettel versus Alonso again and they

:17:51.:17:53.

have had their moments here in the past. Remember a couple of times

:17:54.:18:02.

when Alonso made a fantastic move on Vettel. Vettel made a fantastic move

:18:03.:18:10.

on Alonso and Vettel got done when he squeezed Alonso on to the grass.

:18:11.:18:15.

It is difficult to overtake around here even though the straights are

:18:16.:18:20.

very long and normally you would expect, it is reasonably simple in

:18:21.:18:24.

that respect, but it is hard. Therefore, qualifying will be

:18:25.:18:28.

important and that gaggle in behind, to be honest including Mercedes in

:18:29.:18:30.

the way that it looked yesterday, it is going to be tight and I think

:18:31.:18:36.

qualifying will be a big, big factor today. There is important people

:18:37.:18:43.

from Ferrari today. We look at Kobayashi. A classic lock-up and

:18:44.:18:50.

rotation. Did he save it from spinning? Bounced across the big

:18:51.:18:58.

sausage kerb. A lot of sparks. The car running low. It doesn't run over

:18:59.:19:08.

the kerb too much. That's the McLaren. Magnussen had a brake pedal

:19:09.:19:17.

that was too long and they have had to take the callipers off. You would

:19:18.:19:26.

want to do a belt and braces approach on that if you weren't 100%

:19:27.:19:34.

sure because once you go into qualifying, Ricciardo gets on to the

:19:35.:19:40.

dirty side and loses rear grip. Another new graphic giving us a

:19:41.:19:46.

corner time from entry to exit, 3.8 seconds corner time. Many years, you

:19:47.:19:50.

have done a lot of driver coaching as well, Allan, it makes a big

:19:51.:19:54.

difference, doesn't it to analyse what people are doing? Yes, it

:19:55.:19:59.

certainly does. It is a part of the process of trying to understand

:20:00.:20:02.

where you are actually gaining and losing, what's the important part is

:20:03.:20:07.

that the middle is the exit is at the entry and to maximise all of

:20:08.:20:10.

that and data and information is king in this game. A few more times

:20:11.:20:15.

on the board now. It is Button fastest. Ricciardo is second.

:20:16.:20:18.

Hulkenberg is pushed down to third and Vettel is fourth and Perez is

:20:19.:20:23.

fifth. It is McLaren on top and Red Bull looking strong, but we haven't

:20:24.:20:26.

seen the real potential pace set efforts. Ters. One is Valtteri

:20:27.:20:33.

Bottas and he is on a lap now. Let's watch the lap. Drops down to first

:20:34.:20:37.

gear. Some of the teams are quickly into second because he wants to try

:20:38.:20:52.

to maximise his acceleration. In through the second chicane. This one

:20:53.:21:00.

is tricky. You use all of that kerb on the exit. So through there. Runs

:21:01.:21:07.

out wide. I noticed that yesterday. He uses a fair bit of road. A chunk

:21:08.:21:13.

of oversteer. It is a funny corner because you get a corn in oversteer

:21:14.:21:20.

on entry and then you have got to spot the apex. There is certain

:21:21.:21:25.

areas where the FIA said it is OK to run with all four wheels off.

:21:26.:21:34.

However at Parabolica where he is coming to now, they have dictated if

:21:35.:21:38.

you put all four wheels over the white line then you are in line for

:21:39.:21:43.

a penalty. A touch of tyre lock on the right front. Let's see how much

:21:44.:21:46.

road he uses? That would have been gravel last year, but he keeps it

:21:47.:21:52.

within just about. He goes second fastest with that lap. Not as quick

:21:53.:21:56.

as the McLaren though of Jenson Button.

:21:57.:22:10.

TEAM RADIO: Gears are not learning. Cancel brain magic. It is a

:22:11.:22:13.

wonderful language we're hearing in Formula One. Talking of engineers

:22:14.:22:17.

talking to drivers. Tom, we have a feature that you made with Valtteri

:22:18.:22:22.

Bottas coming up later. Where Valtteri Bottas engaged in a

:22:23.:22:25.

different occupation, but still being talked at by his race

:22:26.:22:30.

engineer? That's right, they have got an interesting history these two

:22:31.:22:34.

guys. They graduated to the Formula One team together in effect.

:22:35.:22:38.

Jonathan became a race engineer for the first time last year as Valtteri

:22:39.:22:43.

was promoted to the race team. So yes, nice feature with that, but I

:22:44.:22:47.

caught up with Valtteri after practise yesterday and very quietly

:22:48.:22:51.

confident of the car's long run pace. I said to him, "How does it

:22:52.:22:57.

look?" He says we're aiming for the podium this weekend, it is just a

:22:58.:23:01.

question of which step! That's good to hear. There is that confidence to

:23:02.:23:05.

Valtteri Bottas now he had a string of podiums, can he go better and

:23:06.:23:11.

take his first win? It might be asking too much. Who knows. Red Bull

:23:12.:23:15.

have managed to win against Mercedes. But the thing they have to

:23:16.:23:18.

do is convert the opportunities and that's something that Red Bull have

:23:19.:23:23.

done very well with Daniel Ricciardo when they have a sniff of a victory

:23:24.:23:27.

then they have grabbed it with both hands. Williams had the faster car,

:23:28.:23:33.

but haven't been able to maximise their performance from it. Here, I

:23:34.:23:37.

think, is their best chance. I think they have got a good bit of speed in

:23:38.:23:41.

the car for qualifying and they have in the race pace as well. I think

:23:42.:23:44.

around here they really have to look towards not just a podium step, but

:23:45.:23:49.

something higher than that. We're watching Kimi Raikkonen. He was

:23:50.:23:53.

third fastest yesterday. More promising for Ferrari, but we are

:23:54.:23:57.

wary. They show well on Fridays and don't always deliver when it comes

:23:58.:24:01.

to Saturday qualifying and Raikkonen coming off that fourth place finish

:24:02.:24:07.

last time out at Spa, but the best grid position is fifth. He hasn't

:24:08.:24:12.

been on the first couple of rows this season and that was it Bahrain.

:24:13.:24:16.

It is a long time since Kimi Raikkonen had a pole position. That

:24:17.:24:21.

was in his first career in Formula One. You have to go back to 2008

:24:22.:24:26.

when he had a pole position and that was at the French Grand Prix and I

:24:27.:24:30.

don't Ferrari will be in the battle for pole position, but they will

:24:31.:24:32.

have the support of the crowd. Let's see what the lap is like. It is a

:24:33.:24:36.

slow lap. I think he has a lot of fuel on board and everybody is still

:24:37.:24:41.

using the hard tyre, Allan. What we did see yesterday when they switched

:24:42.:24:45.

to the softer tyre which we will see later in the session, not quite as

:24:46.:24:48.

big a difference. Sometimes we see between the two tyres and that's

:24:49.:24:52.

partly there is not as many corners here at Monza, but we saw as

:24:53.:24:57.

Valtteri Bottas goes fastest, you can do more than one quick lap and

:24:58.:25:01.

sometimes your second flying lap was quicker than your first. It is

:25:02.:25:05.

around here, I think, it is going to be about building the temperatures

:25:06.:25:09.

into the tyre and into the brakes. Valtteri Bottas there, he improved

:25:10.:25:13.

on the first sector. Equalled his second sector and on the third

:25:14.:25:19.

sector was slower. Therefore, his first timed lap today was not quite

:25:20.:25:23.

totally up to temperature and if he had been able to put those together

:25:24.:25:28.

on the one single lap, he would have been a tenth-and-a-half faster

:25:29.:25:31.

again. Valtteri Bottas quickest. Now Button is second fastest. Hulkenberg

:25:32.:25:35.

third. Massa fourth and Daniel Ricciardo is fifth and Tom, you are

:25:36.:25:41.

at Red Bull? I am, Ben. I wanted to highlight this beautiful front wing

:25:42.:25:46.

on the RB-10. It is naked. There are none of the add on flaps that we see

:25:47.:25:51.

elsewhere in the pit lane. We know that Red Bull are running even less

:25:52.:25:56.

rear wing here than in Spa two weeks ago and I suppose this is just to

:25:57.:26:00.

help balance the car by having less downforce on the front, but doesn't

:26:01.:26:04.

it look, the petals on a rose, just layered on top of each other. It is

:26:05.:26:09.

very beautiful and it is helping their straight line speed. They did

:26:10.:26:13.

run a similar wing last year and when I asked the team why they ran

:26:14.:26:17.

it last year because, of course, there was more engine parity and

:26:18.:26:23.

they said we were only 30 BHP down last year. Listening to that is

:26:24.:26:28.

Christian Horner. The car does look great with all the little add on

:26:29.:26:34.

winglets? I was listening to his description of petals of a rose! It

:26:35.:26:40.

is very descriptive from Tom there. We are trimming as much wing out of

:26:41.:26:44.

the car as we can to make it as efficient on the straights as we

:26:45.:26:48.

can. You guys do a lot of number crunching overnight. Not only in

:26:49.:26:53.

terms of how your car is set-up, but where everybody stands. What can we

:26:54.:26:56.

expect to see in qualifying and indeed, the race? What you can see

:26:57.:27:02.

is that the times are close and a tenth of a second can be moving you

:27:03.:27:08.

three or four places. So I'm looking at the theoretical times here and

:27:09.:27:13.

massively, massively close between the top six or eight cars. It will

:27:14.:27:18.

be very tight. It is about getting the perfect lap in qualifying. And

:27:19.:27:25.

that includes Mercedes, does it? They leave a bit up their sleeve.

:27:26.:27:33.

I'm looking at the Williams, McLarens, they are all Mercedes

:27:34.:27:42.

engines. At Allan here. Looking at yesterday's race pace times, you

:27:43.:27:46.

looked as if you were one of the quickest, but do you have the

:27:47.:27:49.

qualifying pace to utilise that for tomorrow? That's that, Allan. Our

:27:50.:27:54.

race pace looks pretty good, but the problem is it is likely to be a one

:27:55.:27:59.

stop race and that means you have got to do your overtaking on track

:28:00.:28:03.

and with our lack of straight line speed that will be tough. If we can

:28:04.:28:06.

get a car on the third row that would be a good starting position

:28:07.:28:12.

for us and I don't think Daniel won a race from higher than fifth or

:28:13.:28:18.

sixth yet. With the hybrid engines we are using now and it is the first

:28:19.:28:23.

time we have come to Monza with this set-up on the car. Will it change

:28:24.:28:28.

how the drivers go through the qualifying routine? They have got to

:28:29.:28:32.

be careful in terms of how much, you know, they utilise if they are doing

:28:33.:28:36.

consecutive laps. There is a little bit of management in that and you

:28:37.:28:40.

will hear the engineers talking to them about what modes and recharge

:28:41.:28:44.

modes that they need to be in. So power management is critical on a

:28:45.:28:50.

track like this. And presumably with the tyres that we are seeing, we saw

:28:51.:28:54.

people being able to set a second fast lap on the medium tyre

:28:55.:28:57.

yesterday afternoon. Maybe people are staying out there longer in

:28:58.:29:01.

qualifying and doing a couple of laps? The tyres are hard enough to

:29:02.:29:06.

drive home on. So I think, you know, the times will keep falling. You can

:29:07.:29:09.

see on this harder tyre at the moment, you know, cars are

:29:10.:29:14.

continuing to go quicker and quicker and the softer tyre is not much

:29:15.:29:20.

softer, you know, so again, long runs are no problem. One final

:29:21.:29:23.

question. We have seen Daniil Kvyat... That's good. He loves a bit

:29:24.:29:31.

of oversteer! It is good to watch. Jean-Eric Vergne showing how the

:29:32.:29:35.

tyres are not that easy to drive. A quick general question. There has

:29:36.:29:39.

been rumours, it is always that time of year, Monza, the drivers market

:29:40.:29:42.

is always being talked about. You look set with what you have got in

:29:43.:29:45.

terms of Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel. I know there are

:29:46.:29:49.

rumours surrounding Sebastian's future. Do you see any high-profile

:29:50.:29:53.

changes taking place as we go through the rest of the year? As you

:29:54.:29:57.

say, the music is always in full swing this time of year, but when it

:29:58.:30:02.

stops I think they will all end up sticking in the seats they are in

:30:03.:30:06.

and amongst the top teams I suspect. I would be surprised if there was

:30:07.:30:10.

any real movement. OK, great, thank you for joining us. We look forward

:30:11.:30:13.

to some input later on today? Thank you.

:30:14.:30:18.

Big snap from Jean-Eric Vergne with the back of the car, we saw Sergio

:30:19.:30:23.

Perez have a similar issue yesterday. It just gives us an idea

:30:24.:30:27.

of getting that brake balance, which is so crucial here. Running uphill

:30:28.:30:32.

into there, a lot of breaking load, so the rear of the car is quite

:30:33.:30:37.

light anyway. Bit of a bump and the road camber is in towards the

:30:38.:30:40.

right-hand side. So it's not as though when it does react it is

:30:41.:30:45.

reacting identically left and right, so you tend to get a bit of a snap.

:30:46.:30:53.

Kimi had won a bit like Bottas early in the session, dropped his front

:30:54.:30:56.

right wheel into the drain and it hooked him an idiot. Kevin Magnussen

:30:57.:31:07.

had some break issues. Any news? Not on Magnusson, but Nico Rosberg is

:31:08.:31:12.

out of the car with a gearbox issue. The flaw is coming off the car, the

:31:13.:31:17.

team on getting into the gearbox. They think if they can get into it

:31:18.:31:20.

now they might not have to replace the gearbox. So session over for

:31:21.:31:25.

him. Makes you wonder, Lewis Hamilton missed an hour of yesterday

:31:26.:31:28.

afternoon session, Rosberg has effectively missed an hour this

:31:29.:31:33.

morning. Who will suffer more, missing yesterday afternoon or this

:31:34.:31:37.

morning? They are missing different things, because Rosberg got all of

:31:38.:31:40.

the driving feel, and the setup time for the long run pace, and Lewis

:31:41.:31:45.

Hamilton missed out on that for really Sunday afternoon, whereas it

:31:46.:31:51.

looks like the other way round. Personally I would prefer to be in

:31:52.:31:55.

Lewis Hamilton's situation, because I think psychologically having the

:31:56.:31:58.

advantage going into and through qualifying is probably more

:31:59.:32:01.

important right now for him after the run of, I would say, races he

:32:02.:32:08.

has had, more than anything else. Interesting, Lewis Hamilton did not

:32:09.:32:11.

finish last time out so he is allowed a new gearbox. So he is less

:32:12.:32:16.

likely to have a problem. Jenny has some news from McLaren? Yes, be

:32:17.:32:21.

wheel guns are out and they have put the tyres on Kevin Magnussen's car,

:32:22.:32:25.

it was the front brakes he was not comfortable with. He has only put

:32:26.:32:30.

into laps, Sue he came in and they changed the material -- so he came

:32:31.:32:36.

in. Hopefully he will feel more comfortable now. But a long time to

:32:37.:32:40.

miss out on this session. Interesting to know if you changed

:32:41.:32:43.

to the same material that he had on before, because that sensitivity to

:32:44.:32:48.

the brake pedal, especially around here, sometimes they play with

:32:49.:32:53.

materials. We found out in Hockenheim Lewis Hamilton was doing

:32:54.:32:56.

that quite a lot when he had his brake disk failure in qualifying. I

:32:57.:33:01.

did ask the question, as you know I would, and I got resolute no

:33:02.:33:08.

comment. I did say what did they use, and he said normally carbon

:33:09.:33:11.

industry, but they change them round. So I gave up at that point.

:33:12.:33:20.

The sensitivity and feedback in each one has got the characteristic. You

:33:21.:33:25.

prefer them from certain circuits to circuit, and sometimes driver to

:33:26.:33:31.

drive, but it is whether they need instant response or more consistency

:33:32.:33:34.

through the whole braking range. Valtteri Bottas still fastest with

:33:35.:33:40.

over half an hour to go in final practice. Fernando Alonso second

:33:41.:33:44.

fastest, and Christian Horner was saying it was going to be close, but

:33:45.:33:47.

it is mighty close, no difference at all between the lap Duff has done in

:33:48.:33:52.

a Williams-Mercedes and the one Fernando Alonso has done in the

:33:53.:34:02.

Ferrari -- between the lap Bottas has done. Hopefully Lewis Hamilton

:34:03.:34:09.

will give us an idea. Grosjean has been struggling and this car has

:34:10.:34:12.

looked a handful this weekend, they are struggling, even more than they

:34:13.:34:18.

have been at other circuits. In high downforce trim I don't think the car

:34:19.:34:22.

is very easy to drive, seems to be very difficult. Especially with any

:34:23.:34:26.

bumps or curbs, when you take downforce off. That's coming through

:34:27.:34:31.

the second Lesmo, down towards Parabolica. You can run out there,

:34:32.:34:37.

but it is very bumpy. Then you take downforce off, it amplifies these

:34:38.:34:43.

bumps, and the car reacts much more. Lotus have said they have stopped

:34:44.:34:47.

development for 2014 and are looking towards 2015. I think the drivers

:34:48.:34:52.

felt that happened two or three months ago in reality, because they

:34:53.:34:55.

have not been able to extract any more out of it than they had in

:34:56.:35:02.

Malaysia. Hulkenberg on another lap. Thanks for your questions and

:35:03.:35:06.

comments coming in. Quirky badger asks, good Ross Brawn return to

:35:07.:35:10.

Ferrari next season? That is amongst the gossip at Monza, but we wonder

:35:11.:35:14.

whether that's actually going to be a fact. He has done an awful lot in

:35:15.:35:18.

the past at Ferrari, but we don't know for sure yet whether he will

:35:19.:35:23.

return. James Bartlett saying, do we believe Jenson Button deserves next

:35:24.:35:28.

year 's drive, and does Magnusson deserve a second chance? Questions

:35:29.:35:32.

all about the McLaren driver line-up and it is still uncertain. McLaren

:35:33.:35:40.

in a situation. Peres is stopping. Curve grandee, just come through the

:35:41.:35:48.

chicane. RADIO: Do not change gear for the moment or try to change

:35:49.:35:54.

gear. Well he has just tried to do that, he is stuck in second gear,

:35:55.:35:58.

trying to go down, looks like it is in between two gears. He came out of

:35:59.:36:05.

the first chicane, and clearly when he tried to activate into the next

:36:06.:36:09.

year he stopped. I presume that now if they cannot move this car quickly

:36:10.:36:12.

they will have two red flag the session. They may try to push the

:36:13.:36:19.

car if it is in neutral. Interesting that two Mercedes engined cars have

:36:20.:36:22.

apparently had some gearbox problem. We don't know what the problem is on

:36:23.:36:27.

Peres, but worrying times for Force India, they will not want to lose

:36:28.:36:31.

the car at this stage. Marshal is trying to push it out of the way,

:36:32.:36:36.

there is a gap a bit further away. Hopefully they will be able to move

:36:37.:36:38.

that without stopping the entire session. So Sergio Perez, who has so

:36:39.:36:45.

far not done huge amount, he has done some ten laps in this session

:36:46.:36:48.

so far, and he is a fastest. Let's get some news from Jenny. The Sauber

:36:49.:36:54.

of Adrian Sutil in the sick bay at the moment, when he went out for his

:36:55.:36:58.

install that they found a hydraulic leak, so they have had to take it

:36:59.:37:03.

off. They have done a fast turnaround, Adrian Sutil getting

:37:04.:37:06.

ready in the background. Another five or ten minutes before he gets

:37:07.:37:09.

out, but another frustrating weekend, potentially in the bag. The

:37:10.:37:16.

macro. Indeed. -- potentially in the bag for Sauber. Certainly does not

:37:17.:37:22.

look easy for them, and also to Sergio Perez, he missed 30 minutes

:37:23.:37:31.

of Friday morning practice with Juncadella taking his position.

:37:32.:37:35.

Ultimately he has only done ten laps in this one. Now he is out with

:37:36.:37:41.

critically the last 30 minutes to go, which is his qualifying

:37:42.:37:46.

simulation. Coming back to McLaren, Button, Magnusson, any changes next

:37:47.:37:50.

year? McLaren are looking towards the future with their engine

:37:51.:37:53.

changing to Honda, they have to build a plan for the future. Kevin

:37:54.:37:57.

Magnussen has speed. He has had issues. And remember in the first

:37:58.:38:02.

Grand Prix of the season he had second place, so therefore he can do

:38:03.:38:05.

the job. I think he has done enough to continue. Jenson Button has

:38:06.:38:09.

scored the majority of the points, so he is the elder statesman on the

:38:10.:38:13.

grid. Ultimately he has got the points for McLaren Missy and that is

:38:14.:38:19.

very important when they need the stability, going into one big part

:38:20.:38:24.

of their team changing, the engine side -- the points for McLaren this

:38:25.:38:28.

year. I think they will be the drivers on the grid for the first

:38:29.:38:33.

race of 2015. Nico Rosberg looked cool, despite the fact he is losing

:38:34.:38:36.

track time in this session. There is Jenson Button. Another question has

:38:37.:38:40.

come in from Rachel Bridge, she says how come Jenson Button always shows

:38:41.:38:45.

great pace in free practice sessions but falls apart in qualifying? I'm

:38:46.:38:53.

not sure I would necessarily say he falls apart in qualifying, but the

:38:54.:38:58.

pace is not always converted into a challenging top ten in qualifying

:38:59.:39:03.

itself. I think Jenson Button's area of clear strength is in the race. He

:39:04.:39:07.

has a quick brain and he works out when there are opportunities,

:39:08.:39:11.

especially if a safety car or changing weather conditions arise.

:39:12.:39:16.

The area he has struggled a bit on in the past few years is the pure,

:39:17.:39:21.

outright one lap pace. But also McLaren does not build temperature

:39:22.:39:24.

very well into the front tyres, which is hampered, which hampers you

:39:25.:39:29.

in qualifying. I would not necessarily put it all down to

:39:30.:39:35.

Jenson's door, but his area of real strength in my opinion, is when he

:39:36.:39:42.

gets the 53 lap race. Finished second three times in the last five

:39:43.:39:46.

years, never had a race victory here, but some solid performances.

:39:47.:39:51.

Good battle with Fernando Alonso in 2010, nip and tuck. Alonso went on

:39:52.:39:59.

to snatch victory for Ferrari. He himself has a brilliant record of

:40:00.:40:02.

being on the podium every time since he has joined the Italian greats.

:40:03.:40:06.

Whether he will be able to do it this weekend we will see. Alonso

:40:07.:40:10.

showing good pace at the moment. With Jenson Button through the final

:40:11.:40:14.

corner. Lewis Hamilton is on a lap at the moment which should put him

:40:15.:40:18.

to the top of the times. Jenson Button currently fourth fastest and

:40:19.:40:22.

he goes fastest, but Lewis Hamilton is going to eclipse his time. RADIO:

:40:23.:40:30.

Misbehaving, you need to double-check it. I think he was

:40:31.:40:37.

talking about part of the energy recovery system that operates

:40:38.:40:41.

underbraking. Let's see what Hamilton's time is, a big jump

:40:42.:40:44.

faster, the fastest lap of the weekend. He is still on the harder

:40:45.:40:49.

compound tyre. Nobody has switched to the softer tyre yet, and that

:40:50.:40:52.

gives you an understanding that Mercedes still have the edge in

:40:53.:40:56.

terms of sheer pace. Definitely, and that's the first time they have

:40:57.:41:02.

dropped into the 25's, eclipsing his fastest time of yesterday which was

:41:03.:41:06.

in the first free practice on the same tyres. They are starting to

:41:07.:41:11.

wind it up now. RADIO: We see there was a problem without shift but

:41:12.:41:16.

after that it was OK. Sorting it out. Daniel Ricciardo goes fifth,

:41:17.:41:19.

slight improvement in time, but position stays much the same.

:41:20.:41:25.

Hamilton on top from Button, Bottas, Alonso and Ricciardo. Patrick Head,

:41:26.:41:31.

still very involved with the overall company of Williams, but less

:41:32.:41:34.

hands-on with the Formula One team. Keeping a close eye on what is going

:41:35.:41:39.

on. A long time since Williams had a victory here at this Monza circuit.

:41:40.:41:42.

They have had a good record over the years but you have to go back to

:41:43.:41:47.

2001 when Juan Pablo Montoya won here. And he has been at Monza this

:41:48.:41:53.

weekend. In fact he was the last Williams driver to have pole

:41:54.:41:59.

position here, in 2002. Sebastian Vettel popped himself up into

:42:00.:42:02.

seventh place with that time, a little bit quicker than he had

:42:03.:42:07.

previously done, but still 1.1 seconds off the lap time of

:42:08.:42:11.

Hamilton. Ericsson making a mistake at Ascari. Very easy, just a little

:42:12.:42:18.

lock-up, and suddenly you are off. Toby Ashy, his team-mate, has he had

:42:19.:42:23.

similar problems? -- Kobayashi. This is into the first chicane. He didn't

:42:24.:42:29.

even try to make the corner. It is about looking after the tyres as

:42:30.:42:33.

much as anything. If you lock-up, you have to get off the brake pedal

:42:34.:42:37.

and allow the tyre to rotate. Otherwise you get a flat spot.

:42:38.:42:41.

Jenson Button held on to the pressure yesterday and he put it

:42:42.:42:45.

right through to the canvas of the tire very quickly. And that tyre

:42:46.:42:51.

then becomes unusable. So from that point of view you are better to

:42:52.:42:54.

abort the corner, because the corner has gone anyway by then. Pastor

:42:55.:43:00.

Maldonado is currently 15th, but there is a bit of a danger for

:43:01.:43:05.

Lotus, looking at the pace, Mauritius are not far be hanged. It

:43:06.:43:12.

might be a concern. -- Marussia. They were saying Bianchi's pace,

:43:13.:43:18.

there was a bit of contact with Grosjean macro but it was a racing

:43:19.:43:24.

incident. Bianchi ended up with a punch as a result. But his pace was

:43:25.:43:30.

very much on a target with what Lotus were doing in that race. They

:43:31.:43:33.

wonder whether they might be able to do something to challenge. A faster

:43:34.:43:38.

from Maldonado. We are still waiting to see what anyone else can do.

:43:39.:43:44.

RADIO: Breaks don't feel like they are working very well, DRS not

:43:45.:43:49.

working. DRS not working, and the brakes. Lap time suggested it is not

:43:50.:43:55.

too bad, but he missed the first chicane off camera about a lap ago

:43:56.:44:00.

for Lewis Hamilton. So maybe he has some sensitivity. His brain now is

:44:01.:44:05.

tuned straight into what he needs for qualifying. This is the first

:44:06.:44:12.

chicane, comes down the gears, locks up both front wheels. On the white

:44:13.:44:16.

line a little bit, and then went through the chicane area. Fernando

:44:17.:44:21.

Alonso has just gone out on the medium compound tyres, so the first

:44:22.:44:24.

flying lap we will see is from Fernando Alonso on the softer of the

:44:25.:44:28.

two tyres. This may not be his best lap as we saw yesterday, sometimes

:44:29.:44:33.

they were doing their best lap of the one quick lap, slowing down to a

:44:34.:44:38.

recovery lap, to regenerate all the hybrid power, and then go again.

:44:39.:44:43.

Yes, Lewis Hamilton has now done his fastest first sector on a lap off

:44:44.:44:49.

camera now, and the fastest person crossing the start finish line, just

:44:50.:44:53.

over 200 mph. It has now been eclipsed by Alonso on these medium

:44:54.:44:57.

tyres. Yes, they are working well for him in that first sector, as

:44:58.:45:00.

Daniel Ricciardo gets right out of the way of Fernando Alonso. Seen

:45:01.:45:04.

plenty of wheel-to-wheel dicing between those two this season.

:45:05.:45:10.

Looking good so far. Nice through Lesmo, a 4-wheel power slide, it

:45:11.:45:13.

looked very neat and tidy through Lesmo two. Now he has the Ascari

:45:14.:45:18.

chicane, you need to carry a lot of speed into it, but not too much to

:45:19.:45:21.

bounce over the curve, and a little bit quicker. And then he needs a

:45:22.:45:25.

clean exit out for the one kilometre run down towards Parabolica.

:45:26.:45:30.

The power delivery of the Ferraris is looking good. It seems to be

:45:31.:45:36.

putting the power down more smoothly. Lets see what his corner

:45:37.:45:43.

time is like. Runs wide. Just on the limit. That's 13 kilometres an hour

:45:44.:45:57.

faster than Maldonado and the same as another driver. It is not enough

:45:58.:46:01.

to put him ahead of Lewis Hamilton. He lost two tenths between Ascari

:46:02.:46:07.

and through the last corner and Parabolica in comparison to Lewis

:46:08.:46:11.

Hamilton. Let's just, we're riding on board with Alonso now. This lap

:46:12.:46:16.

maybe a kind of regeneration lap and then he may well go again. We will

:46:17.:46:21.

have to wait and see. As we heard from Christian Horner with these

:46:22.:46:26.

hybrid systems, you can't go and do two flat out-laps one after the

:46:27.:46:31.

other? Well, you can do it, but you don't have the maximum boostment you

:46:32.:46:36.

don't have the amount of extra energy that you ideally need. You're

:46:37.:46:41.

better to store the energy up on your out-lap go for it on one lap

:46:42.:46:45.

and build the energy store up to maximum and go again while your tyre

:46:46.:46:49.

has got life in it. Kimi Raikkonen has gone out on the medium compound

:46:50.:46:53.

tyre. Max Chilton is still on the harder compound tyre, but he put in

:46:54.:46:57.

a couple of personal best sector times. That's why we're keeping an

:46:58.:47:03.

eye on him. His team-mate, Jules Bianchi is a fraction faster at this

:47:04.:47:07.

point. Kimi Raikkonen is on a lap at the moment. On the medium compound

:47:08.:47:10.

tyre, but nobody else has gone out on that tyre yet. Max Chilton does

:47:11.:47:15.

improve. He goes ahead of his team-mate by 100ths of a second.

:47:16.:47:18.

That's all the difference there is between Max Chilton and Bianchi. Max

:47:19.:47:28.

Chilton raced here in three Formula 3. He felt comfortable at this Monza

:47:29.:47:35.

circuit. Looking into the pit garage of Jenson Button as he waits for the

:47:36.:47:40.

opportunity to come out and do his qualifying simulation run. Alonso

:47:41.:47:45.

did a 1 minute 40 and now he is back on it again.

:47:46.:47:53.

TEAM RADIO: Left switch. Left switch. He has got to turn through

:47:54.:47:58.

the first corner, I think he was on, whichever that left switch is. But

:47:59.:48:02.

he just dragged that into the second chicane there and lost the rear a

:48:03.:48:08.

little bit as we watch Gutierrez coming up on Sutil. His eyes were

:48:09.:48:11.

dragged to where his team-mate was going to go and an odd situation

:48:12.:48:17.

there, but Alonso was really pushing the edge of the limit with this

:48:18.:48:23.

second run on the tyre. He has got that Ascari chicane. Comes to the

:48:24.:48:29.

middle of circuit. Underbraking and he is three tenths slower than he

:48:30.:48:33.

was on his flying lap. He is not getting the sector times on this

:48:34.:48:38.

flying lap. He is not as quick as he was than on his first flying lap.

:48:39.:48:42.

Maybe that's to do with track temperatures, but it doesn't seem to

:48:43.:48:44.

be delivering second time around. This is useful information for all

:48:45.:48:50.

the teams, of course. Yes. And he is going into the pits, so he has

:48:51.:48:54.

aborted the lap and popping into the pits. Kimi Raikkonen is the one to

:48:55.:48:57.

watch now. He is on his lap with his first flying lap on the softer tyre

:48:58.:49:02.

with the white side walls, the medium compound. Into Parabolica. A

:49:03.:49:06.

bit of understeer there. The front of the car didn't hook in. It

:49:07.:49:11.

transferred to oversteer as he has gone on the power. The paint looks

:49:12.:49:16.

to be slippery still, but there is more rubber going don't to it as

:49:17.:49:20.

Kimi Raikkonen's third. Just over half a second behind Hamilton. Yes,

:49:21.:49:25.

and Four tenths slower than his team-mate at the same time on the

:49:26.:49:29.

softer tyre. He won't be happy about that, I don't think, he lost a bit

:49:30.:49:32.

to Fernando Alonso in similar conditions. So not ideal for Kimi

:49:33.:49:36.

Raikkonen. But we will see what he can do if he does another second run

:49:37.:49:42.

on those tyres. Lewis Hamilton in the car all happy, but Nico Rosberg

:49:43.:49:47.

is unable to do anymore laps as his car is being worked on. It is

:49:48.:49:52.

affecting Nico Rosberg's preparation for qualifying and although Hamilton

:49:53.:49:56.

had the problems yesterday, it is Nico Rosberg who is having to stand

:49:57.:49:59.

on the sidelines as he waits for the car to be fixed and Sergio Perez is

:50:00.:50:04.

back after having abandoned his car out on track and looking concerned

:50:05.:50:09.

and hoping that they won't have to execute a gearbox change on his car

:50:10.:50:12.

which would give him a penalty on the grid. Valtteri Bottas is

:50:13.:50:17.

currently fifth fastest. Are Williams going to sacrifice any of

:50:18.:50:22.

their race pace that they showed strongly on Friday afternoon for

:50:23.:50:24.

qualifying pace? That's got to be the question. It doesn't look as if

:50:25.:50:28.

they have got the frontline qualifying pace, but let's wait and

:50:29.:50:32.

see when they put the softer tyre on. Here is Adrian Sutil in the

:50:33.:50:36.

Sauber and a team that's been fighting at lower end of the order

:50:37.:50:39.

and once again, there is Sutil fighting with the handling of the

:50:40.:50:42.

car! Yes, this is another team that has not been able to transform the

:50:43.:50:49.

form that they had at the end of 2013 into 2014 and not been able to

:50:50.:50:54.

pick it up. They gained a little bit from the German Grand Prix onwards,

:50:55.:50:58.

but it has only been marginal. At the beginning of the season they

:50:59.:51:04.

were struggling. Now, they're firmly into the bottom end of, I should say

:51:05.:51:09.

between tenth and 15th, but there is no way of them getting into the top

:51:10.:51:15.

ten. They are reasonably matched the two Sauber team-mates. Sutil has the

:51:16.:51:25.

upper hand. 7-5 in favour of the more experienced of the two drivers.

:51:26.:51:29.

Gutierrez the lighter weight, but Sauber have been able to save weight

:51:30.:51:33.

on the car. It started the season heavy, but they managed to get it

:51:34.:51:36.

down to the weight limit. You can see on that lap, he has not done

:51:37.:51:41.

anything special. He is on the harder compound tyre. We are seeing

:51:42.:51:47.

Hulkenberg come out on the softer tyre. Bianchi's time is only a

:51:48.:51:52.

fraction slower than Maldonado as well. So it will be close at that

:51:53.:51:59.

back group as we are seeing up at the front as well. The Caterhams

:52:00.:52:06.

seem to be struggling. Grosjean in between the two Caterham drivers.

:52:07.:52:16.

There is a few former Ferrari drivers around. That was Fishkella

:52:17.:52:27.

there on microphone. Unlike Friday afternoon, you are only going to get

:52:28.:52:31.

one flying lap out of these tyres. That seems to be the case. It puts a

:52:32.:52:39.

lot of pressure on the driver to maximise that first flying lap

:52:40.:52:42.

especially the brake nothing the first and the second chicanes. They

:52:43.:52:47.

can't afford a lock-up because you know if you have to abort and go

:52:48.:52:52.

again you have lost a couple of tenths. Ferrari are second and third

:52:53.:52:57.

and they are waiting for Hamilton to use the softer tyre. There is Ron

:52:58.:53:06.

Dennis. They have a little bit of time. Button and Magnussen will be

:53:07.:53:10.

coming out on circuit. Hulkenberg has gun to the tyres already -- gone

:53:11.:53:15.

to the tyres already. When he was driving for Sauber he qualified

:53:16.:53:19.

third at this track. It shows you the difference between a year.

:53:20.:53:22.

Sauber is struggling to get anywhere near the top ten, but he was third

:53:23.:53:28.

here last year on the grid and finished in fifth place. He is back

:53:29.:53:33.

with Force India. He is having a good year. There is only one race he

:53:34.:53:37.

failed to score points. Let's see what this lap is like Allan. He is

:53:38.:53:44.

exiting Ascari. Uses the road. It's kind of an average lap. It is not a

:53:45.:53:49.

fantastic lap I have to say. He is three tenths off in the middle

:53:50.:53:53.

sector and he is another three tenths after in comparison to Lewis

:53:54.:53:58.

Hamilton on the used hard tyre. Hamilton did 16 laps on that tyre.

:53:59.:54:03.

Nice and clean out of Parabolica to cross the line. And he goes a little

:54:04.:54:11.

bit quicker, but not much. Not the gain that you would have expected in

:54:12.:54:14.

his last sector. He was a fraction slower than he had been on the hard

:54:15.:54:20.

compound tyre. No real gain found by Hulkenberg despite going to the

:54:21.:54:23.

softer of the two compounds. Maybe he will back off and try to go once

:54:24.:54:29.

more. Felipe Massa, who, of course, has always been a fans favourite

:54:30.:54:33.

here when he was driving for Ferrari, now he drives for Williams,

:54:34.:54:36.

but there is a lot of affection for the Brazilian and now McLaren begin

:54:37.:54:39.

to send their cars. Jenson Button is on his way. Alonso has gone back on

:54:40.:54:44.

to the track. Daniel Ricciardo is out on circuit now with the softer

:54:45.:54:50.

tyre on. Yeah, he is going to do a practise start. We will try and

:54:51.:55:01.

close in and see how this sounds. Magnussen following him through.

:55:02.:55:07.

Yeah, he was quick to get on with the programme and get out on to the

:55:08.:55:10.

circuit. Remember, when he did that at the beginning of the session, he

:55:11.:55:14.

struggled for a couple of laps to get the brakes and everything up to

:55:15.:55:18.

temperature. He would want to make sure he kept residual temperature

:55:19.:55:22.

into the tyres and not sit too long at the end of the pit lane. Daniel

:55:23.:55:26.

Ricciardo, the man who has been such a star of recent ehaven'ts. Top

:55:27.:55:30.

points scorer in the last six Grand Prix, three victories to his credit

:55:31.:55:34.

and looking for a hat-trick this weekend. He won the last two Grand

:55:35.:55:43.

Prix, one in Hungary and one in Spa. This is a power circuit and although

:55:44.:55:47.

he has been able to pick up great results on power circuits due to

:55:48.:55:52.

problems for other teams, it is unlikely that we will see the Red

:55:53.:55:58.

Bull near the front in qualifying. He is trying to maximise the

:55:59.:56:02.

temperatures into everything. He takes a different line than he will

:56:03.:56:06.

on the flying lap out of Parabolica so he starts it with the maximum

:56:07.:56:11.

speed crossing the start/finish line. This qualifying for Red Bull

:56:12.:56:16.

is critical. If they get this right, they have got half a chance

:56:17.:56:21.

tomorrow. If they don't, if they can't maximise their qualifying

:56:22.:56:24.

speed and get in the mix, it will be hard for them with the strategy

:56:25.:56:30.

looking to be a one stopper and their straight line speed. Hamilton

:56:31.:56:41.

is fastest at 352 kilometres per hour. We have hit the 220mph mark at

:56:42.:56:46.

this speed trap going down towards the first chicane, but Red Bull

:56:47.:56:53.

giving up 14 kilometres an hour despite the little skinny wings that

:56:54.:56:57.

they are running. This is where that hurts them. They can't take the

:56:58.:57:02.

corners as fast because there is less downforce. The rear flap opens

:57:03.:57:07.

up as he approaches Ascari and sector times, he is improving on

:57:08.:57:11.

what he did on the hard tyre. He is getting a gain in performance

:57:12.:57:14.

through both of the first two sectors, but he wouldn't be doing

:57:15.:57:18.

enough to reach those top times, I think. Hamilton's time set on the

:57:19.:57:25.

hard tyre, but Hamilton has come out on the medium compound tyre. He runs

:57:26.:57:33.

very, very wide. Just allows the car to keep two wheels over that white

:57:34.:57:37.

line on to the green and all the way over the kerb. It goes seven tenths

:57:38.:57:42.

down. Hamilton's hard tyre time. Jenson Button will look at these. He

:57:43.:57:47.

is going quick in the middle sector. So we have had Daniel Ricciardo

:57:48.:57:51.

popping up fourth, but Jenson Button is on one here. What is worrying for

:57:52.:57:57.

Red Bull, he is five tenths slower than Alonso, but that's a big

:57:58.:58:01.

difference between Ricciardo and the Red Bull and Alonso and the Ferrari.

:58:02.:58:06.

Big hitters from Ferrari. I want to see them replicate those times in

:58:07.:58:10.

qualifying. The boss of Ferrari keeping an eye on what's going on

:58:11.:58:14.

here this weekend. He is the President of Ferrari and there is a

:58:15.:58:18.

lot of gossip about whether he will be holding that position for a great

:58:19.:58:21.

deal longer. Jenson Button has gone third fastest on his medium compound

:58:22.:58:26.

tyre. Faster than the Red Bull. It does look as if McLaren could

:58:27.:58:28.

challenge Red Bull in terms of positions in the top ten here. Lewis

:58:29.:58:32.

Hamilton though, let's see what he can do. He has gone fastest in the

:58:33.:58:37.

middle sector. First sector though, not the quickest of all

:58:38.:58:40.

interestingly. Let's just see where this brings him. It should be an

:58:41.:58:45.

improvement in time. On the softer tyre. And it's not. It is a

:58:46.:58:53.

1.25.745. We have got radio. TEAM RADIO: How is the balance? I

:58:54.:59:01.

struggled with the rear in the low speed. I couldn't quite make much in

:59:02.:59:06.

the first sector. Some feedback from Ricciardo. We saw this in Austria

:59:07.:59:11.

where the Mercedes didn't pick up as much speed on the softer tyre as we

:59:12.:59:15.

had been expecting and that brought Williams into the picture there.

:59:16.:59:18.

Maybe that's going to allow Ferrari into the picture more in qualifying

:59:19.:59:24.

at least for this Monza Grand Prix. That's one to watch. It shows

:59:25.:59:30.

Alonso's time there. It is competitive. Valtteri Bottas popped

:59:31.:59:36.

up into third place on his run. It still leaves Hamilton fastest on the

:59:37.:59:41.

hard tyre and on the soft. From a race point of view he has both

:59:42.:59:45.

options covered. Significantly quicker than anyone on the hard.

:59:46.:59:50.

Massa has gone quickest on the first sector and quick in terms of the

:59:51.:59:53.

straight line speeds. Massa coming up. Here we are on board with him

:59:54.:59:57.

and he is still quickest as he enters into Ascari. This is fastest

:59:58.:00:06.

than Hamilton's time. Hamilton has done a time. Massa is always rapid

:00:07.:00:10.

over the one lap. There is no doubt about his single lap pace. He

:00:11.:00:15.

outqualified Alonso here the last couple of years and he is teetering

:00:16.:00:19.

a little bit there through Parabolica. He dropped a little bit

:00:20.:00:27.

off on Ascari. He has got his personal best in sector one. It is

:00:28.:00:31.

only enough for fourth place. Just half a tenth behind Valtteri Bottas.

:00:32.:00:37.

A very impressive lap from Alonso holds him in second place at the

:00:38.:00:43.

moment. Ferrari, we were not expecting to see quite this level of

:00:44.:00:48.

performance, but it is impressive. Button on another lap, holding on to

:00:49.:00:53.

fifth place at the moment. His second lap on these tyres. The first

:00:54.:00:58.

one popped up into third place. Remember we have seen everybody else

:00:59.:01:01.

dropping back three tenths, give or take, on the second run. Let's see

:01:02.:01:06.

if Button can do a bit more with it than the rest. He has a better first

:01:07.:01:10.

sector than he had before, but the middle sector is not an improvement,

:01:11.:01:16.

so let's see. It is a slight improvement, but it does not change

:01:17.:01:19.

his position, still fifth, a 10th slower than Philippe Massa. One to

:01:20.:01:24.

watch in a moment will be Sebastian Vettel, who has just gone on to his

:01:25.:01:31.

flying lap. Ricciardo's flying lap was not so impressive, but can

:01:32.:01:34.

Sebastian Vettel get closer to the Ferraris? Making the comment that

:01:35.:01:41.

the brakes are not very good, same as his team-mate. We don't know

:01:42.:01:46.

whether it is another manufacturer or not, changing the brake material

:01:47.:01:49.

at the start of the session because he did not feel a good consistency

:01:50.:01:54.

or feedback from the pedal. Interesting, Hamilton not bad happy.

:01:55.:01:58.

Rosberg has been saying all year he is not 100% happy with the braking.

:01:59.:02:03.

Of course he is missing out on this chance to get some experience on the

:02:04.:02:06.

softer tyres, a real feel for what it is like at the limit

:02:07.:02:10.

underbraking. Riding with Bottas, he has gone for another quick lap.

:02:11.:02:14.

Improving slightly, is it enough to go ahead of Alonso? Still third for

:02:15.:02:19.

him. Missed out on the final sector, there. He was 1000th of a second

:02:20.:02:24.

slower than he had been on his previous lap. He gained in the first

:02:25.:02:29.

two sectors but lost over a 10th in the final sector, is that the tyres

:02:30.:02:33.

giving up at the end? I think it is not being able to get the first

:02:34.:02:37.

sector absolutely spot on, on the first lap, as opposed to anything

:02:38.:02:41.

else. He seemed to be gaining on the first sector on the second lap.

:02:42.:02:46.

Vettel has gone six, so not a lot quicker than Ricciardo, but a little

:02:47.:02:51.

bit. There is an interesting... Nice to see the relationship between

:02:52.:02:59.

Alonso and him. How real is that, we wonder. I think it is a genuine

:03:00.:03:06.

emotion. Both are very Latin, we are in Monza, home ground of Ferrari.

:03:07.:03:11.

There will be an element of relief as well that they are somewhat

:03:12.:03:15.

competitive. Ferrari came into this with all of the statements... As

:03:16.:03:19.

Hamilton fires it through Ascari. All of the statements that this

:03:20.:03:23.

would be a hard weekend for them. Hamilton has the fastest middle

:03:24.:03:26.

sector of anybody, so he could improve on his second flying lap on

:03:27.:03:30.

these tyres. Button going quicker again, a third flying lap, I

:03:31.:03:35.

believe, for Button. Hamilton currently fastest. Could he go a bit

:03:36.:03:40.

quicker? Yes. So he does gametime on the softer compound tyre, but only

:03:41.:03:47.

his second flying lap. Button on his third flying lap, let's see whether

:03:48.:03:51.

the McLaren can gain some more. Nico Rosberg trying to learn as much as

:03:52.:03:54.

he can from all of the sector times appearing on the screens. Ron Dennis

:03:55.:03:59.

will have seen the improvement. Kevin Magnussen currently 11th, on a

:04:00.:04:04.

lap at the moment. Definitely a bit off Jenson Button at this stage.

:04:05.:04:11.

29.6 in the middle sector, it is reasonable. Let's see whether Kevin

:04:12.:04:15.

Magnussen will make an improvement from his current 11. Oh, he really

:04:16.:04:20.

runs it wide that time. He did, he got a kick right at the point where

:04:21.:04:25.

he needed to pull the car back and lost a bit. Jenson Button is behind

:04:26.:04:29.

him, and Jenson Button will be coming across the line in a second

:04:30.:04:34.

or two. I don't think it will be a quick lap overall, but definitely a

:04:35.:04:39.

quicker first section. Kvyat on a lap, this puts intense at the

:04:40.:04:44.

moment, impressive. He goes eighth. But remember he will have a temper

:04:45.:04:47.

his penalty on the grid because of going to his six engine. -- he will

:04:48.:04:53.

have a ten place penalty. And that was Kevin Magnussen, presumably that

:04:54.:04:57.

was the lap we picked up, but we had not seen that. We did see this

:04:58.:05:02.

mistake through Parabolica. Very quick entry, lost the rear early,

:05:03.:05:06.

and got a bit wide and lost it again as he was trying to get back onto

:05:07.:05:11.

the fossil. Just a little bit too fast on entry -- onto the throttle.

:05:12.:05:16.

Is that a classic case of over driving the car? A classic case. One

:05:17.:05:21.

minute before you start to go into qualifying and you throw caution to

:05:22.:05:24.

the wind. You can do that because there is the run-off area, a get out

:05:25.:05:28.

of jail free card. Without doubt I would take that risk as well. Look

:05:29.:05:32.

at the speed trap, Hamilton with quite a big margin over the other

:05:33.:05:37.

Mercedes powered car, Valtteri Bottas. Just shows you how they have

:05:38.:05:46.

balance out the power against the downforce on the cars, so running

:05:47.:05:49.

very low drag setups. The chequered flag is now out on this session.

:05:50.:05:57.

RADIO: Kevin, relative to Jensen, losing a couple of tenths in each

:05:58.:06:00.

sector, we will try to give you more feedback. Bit of work to be done,

:06:01.:06:05.

but that's what it's all about in practice, see if they can convert

:06:06.:06:07.

that when it comes to qualifying itself. Hamilton has ended up

:06:08.:06:11.

fastest in this third practice session of the weekend. One minute

:06:12.:06:18.

25.5 is the time he achieved. We were never able to see what Nico

:06:19.:06:22.

Rosberg could have done. Interestingly, Sebastian Vettel was

:06:23.:06:26.

fastest here last year in practice doing, on a 1:20 4.3. Just over a

:06:27.:06:31.

second away from what was achieved here 12 months ago. Hamilton

:06:32.:06:36.

fastest, Alonso second, and that's an impressive lap time from Fernando

:06:37.:06:39.

Alonso. It really shows that Ferrari could challenge for a high starting

:06:40.:06:45.

position. And Nico Rosberg, he will see how close the times and it will

:06:46.:06:48.

be a concern because it means that if you make a little mistake here,

:06:49.:06:52.

even driving a Mercedes, you could easily be pushed down the order by

:06:53.:06:55.

the likes of Bottas, Massa, maybe even Button. Hamilton certainly

:06:56.:07:01.

getting the rub of the green so far today, as he has ended up fastest in

:07:02.:07:07.

this first session. Alonso second, Bottas third, Massa has been fourth

:07:08.:07:12.

fastest. Of course none of this counts towards the grid as yet, it

:07:13.:07:20.

is qualifying that matters. The times are very close between Button

:07:21.:07:31.

and Vettel. Kevin Magnussen seemed to be struggling a little bit for

:07:32.:07:36.

pace coming he was 11th fastest out of what would be qualifying free, of

:07:37.:07:41.

course. Gutierrez, that is actually quite impressive in the Sauber.

:07:42.:07:45.

Remember that Sergio Perez never had an opportunity to put the softer

:07:46.:07:56.

tyres on. Jules Bianchi did well, faster than both of the Lotus

:07:57.:08:05.

vehicles. Very impressive. A bit quicker than his team-mate Chilton.

:08:06.:08:12.

Nico Rosberg not getting any times in as a result of gearbox problems.

:08:13.:08:18.

He did three installation laps earlier in the session but nothing

:08:19.:08:23.

more. Hamilton ends up fastest in final practice and Rosberg has

:08:24.:08:27.

problems at the start of the qualifying day here at Monza.

:08:28.:08:33.

A difficult morning for Nico Rosberg, but I imagine quite a few

:08:34.:08:37.

smiles inside Williams at the moment. The chief technical officer

:08:38.:08:42.

joins me. Tell us about the mood in the camp after what you saw on track

:08:43.:08:46.

this morning? Pretty good. We expected to be pretty competitive

:08:47.:08:50.

here. It is very close, isn't it? From behind the Mercedes, Ferrari

:08:51.:08:56.

and ourselves battling, McLaren joining in this weekend. So it is

:08:57.:09:01.

going to be tight. How much of a surprise is it that we seem to be

:09:02.:09:05.

coming to the circuit and teens which we didn't necessarily imagine

:09:06.:09:07.

would be performing so well, even though they do have the engine for

:09:08.:09:11.

somewhere like Monza, have suddenly turned up and seem to be

:09:12.:09:15.

competitive? That is the thing, it is Monza, it is different to most of

:09:16.:09:19.

the circuit. It is power, drag, that are really important here. Downforce

:09:20.:09:25.

maybe not. Maybe that's an overstatement. But you will see a

:09:26.:09:29.

slight change in the pecking order on a circuit like this. Even when we

:09:30.:09:33.

have gone to circuits when we thought power was important like

:09:34.:09:41.

Canada or Spa, Red Bull seem to have done well, although circumstances

:09:42.:09:44.

last week in Spa may be played into their hands. I think it did. Spa is

:09:45.:09:49.

a bit of a con demise on both, you need a car with good downforce in

:09:50.:09:53.

high-speed corners. Red Bull still have a very good chassis. The three

:09:54.:09:59.

Bottas said yesterday that he would be aiming for the podium, as always,

:10:00.:10:03.

it would just depend what steps. Is that how high confidence is with

:10:04.:10:09.

Valtteri at the moment? Absolutely, and that is the confidence of

:10:10.:10:12.

Williams, and that is what we are racing for, podium positions. A

:10:13.:10:16.

couple of times this year I feel we have not been able to pick up when

:10:17.:10:20.

Mercedes have not had their best days. We have got to make sure we

:10:21.:10:24.

are not in that position, make sure we are always there, always behind

:10:25.:10:29.

and ready to just take those points. I hope for a win before the end of

:10:30.:10:34.

the season. We know how strong Felipe is around here,

:10:35.:10:39.

out-qualifying Fernando in the last couple of years, he loves this

:10:40.:10:44.

circuit. What is his feeling? Good. The car is well balanced and we have

:10:45.:10:49.

a nice, I is between speed and grid. He was right with Valtteri and there

:10:50.:10:55.

was nothing to change between them. Are we expecting any surprises this

:10:56.:10:59.

afternoon, do you think? I don't think so. I think we are sort of

:11:00.:11:05.

shooting for the second row. It is tight, as I said earlier, but I

:11:06.:11:07.

don't think there will be any big surprises. Just explain what happens

:11:08.:11:12.

with the team between now and qualifying starting, because there

:11:13.:11:16.

is not long. There isn't. We go through everything we have done this

:11:17.:11:19.

morning, we have done more setup work and we decide on the final bit

:11:20.:11:22.

of tuning, make sure we discuss every lap, think about the traffic

:11:23.:11:27.

in qualifying, make sure we have the tyres that right. It is absolute

:11:28.:11:32.

attention to detail now. Thank you very much for joining us this

:11:33.:11:36.

morning. We are going to walk around here, because Allan McNish is here

:11:37.:11:38.

at the back of the Williams garage, which is pretty tight, especially

:11:39.:11:42.

with everybody trying to work on the tyres. Pirelli getting down to

:11:43.:11:48.

business behind us. Interesting session, and some misfortune for

:11:49.:11:52.

some of the bigger names. Nico Rosberg lost out today, it was Lewis

:11:53.:11:55.

Hamilton who lost out yesterday, both of them lost different things.

:11:56.:11:58.

Nico Rosberg lost the critical qualifying simulation and Lewis

:11:59.:12:03.

Hamilton lost the feel for what the tyres are going to be like in the

:12:04.:12:08.

long run. Personally I think Lewis Hamilton has more of a psychological

:12:09.:12:12.

advantage, because he is tuned in for qualifying, and knows what the

:12:13.:12:15.

car will need to be like in a slightly hotter condition.

:12:16.:12:21.

Alternately for Mercedes it has been perfect, there have been some

:12:22.:12:26.

problems -- ultimately. As Pat said, Williams have got to be there when

:12:27.:12:29.

those problems do arise. Right here I think is the best option, best

:12:30.:12:36.

chance of a victory. Paddy Lowe is with Tom Clarkson at the moment.

:12:37.:12:40.

What else can you tell others about the gearbox problem of Nico Rosberg?

:12:41.:12:45.

An electronic problem which is affecting the gear shifts. It kind

:12:46.:12:49.

of works, but it doesn't set itself up properly. The all-important

:12:50.:12:53.

question, will you have to replace the gearbox and will he get a

:12:54.:12:57.

penalty? No, we don't think he will get a penalty, we are just changing

:12:58.:13:02.

part. Pretty confident it will be fine for qualifying. Who has the

:13:03.:13:07.

bigger task? Lewis Hamilton missed an hour yesterday afternoon, Nico

:13:08.:13:11.

Rosberg effectively missed an hour this morning, whose shoes would you

:13:12.:13:14.

rather be in? It is not great for either of them to miss time. Very

:13:15.:13:19.

disappointed to have lost that time for them. Difficult to call.

:13:20.:13:24.

Probably worse to lose today, to be honest. Why is it that you are

:13:25.:13:28.

having these technical issues at this race track? It has not been a

:13:29.:13:32.

clean weekend. Is it related to the high top speeds we are seeing, three

:13:33.:13:35.

quarters of the lap at full throttle? Totally unrelated to the

:13:36.:13:40.

circuit, they are just two issues that we haven't ever seen before.

:13:41.:13:44.

One of them and engine faults, could have happened on any of the other

:13:45.:13:48.

seven Mercedes engines, unfortunately happened on Lewis's.

:13:49.:13:54.

Gearbox issue not something we have seen before, but we will sort it

:13:55.:13:58.

out. Quick look at a qualifying, the times look close this morning, I

:13:59.:14:02.

assume you are keeping your powder dry? We ran a pretty normal strategy

:14:03.:14:06.

to be honest. As we have done through the weekend. So yeah, I

:14:07.:14:10.

think we will see where we end up this afternoon. Lewis had a very

:14:11.:14:17.

good run on the prime tyres and the option, so we are reasonable

:14:18.:14:20.

confident we can get a result this afternoon. They don't seem to get it

:14:21.:14:26.

right in twos, it seems to be either Lewis Hamilton's day or Nico Rosberg

:14:27.:14:31.

pars. But at least it doesn't sound like Nico Rosberg will get a

:14:32.:14:36.

penalty. They will obviously do everything they can to avoid that

:14:37.:14:42.

penalty. Lewis Hamilton had 18 run. He didn't gain the lap time

:14:43.:14:48.

advantage I expected on the option, it looked to be a little less. But

:14:49.:14:54.

it was a clean lap that he did get, nice in the breaking into the second

:14:55.:14:58.

chicane, here. Go down the gears, hit the kerb on the left, tried to

:14:59.:15:02.

hit the kerb on the right but be careful not to go to far over before

:15:03.:15:06.

the exit and you run up into Lesmo one, and then Lesmo two. You can see

:15:07.:15:11.

the shadows on the track from the trees around here. We know they made

:15:12.:15:15.

some changes to Parabolica, how do you think the drivers have been

:15:16.:15:16.

handling it? Well, they have been attacking into

:15:17.:15:23.

it more. But the Ascari chicane is the one now. As he comes through

:15:24.:15:27.

here nice and cleanly, the important part is to be smooth on this exit.

:15:28.:15:32.

You can run all four wheels off, but now with Parabolica you will see

:15:33.:15:36.

that you can attack much, much more into it. And this is where Lewis

:15:37.:15:40.

Hamilton, I was standing on the right-hand side yesterday, he was

:15:41.:15:44.

deep on the brakes and he got down into fourth gear and squeezed on the

:15:45.:15:51.

throttle. We have seen people using the run off area and that's allowed.

:15:52.:15:54.

Lewis Hamilton will need to do more if he is going to get pole position

:15:55.:15:57.

this afternoon. He will be looking for a clean qualifying and hopeful

:15:58.:16:02.

pole position because that's not happened since back to the beginning

:16:03.:16:06.

of May at the Spanish Grand Prix. When Lewis is in a bad place, he

:16:07.:16:11.

goes back to his family and friends. Anthony Hamilton is speaking to

:16:12.:16:17.

Jennie. Anthony Hamilton. It is good to see you and you are probably

:16:18.:16:20.

pleased to be here to watch your son? Yes, it is nice to be in sun

:16:21.:16:27.

for a change. I saw you smiling away when Lewis posted that fast time.

:16:28.:16:31.

How is he feeling? He is in a really good space actually. I think he is

:16:32.:16:36.

feeling really good. I think performances this weekend will be

:16:37.:16:40.

reliable I would like to think. 29 points is the difference. How big do

:16:41.:16:46.

you think that is? You know, it is not huge, is it? It looks like it is

:16:47.:16:50.

a mountain to climb, but there is seven races left and you have got to

:16:51.:16:54.

be positive every time you go out on the track and that's probably one of

:16:55.:16:58.

Lewis' strengths. This weekend, I think he has come back with a view

:16:59.:17:01.

that there is all to play for still. You have had a lot to deal with this

:17:02.:17:08.

season together. He confides in you a lot. Silverstone was a big hurdle.

:17:09.:17:13.

How has the last two weeks been for you and him? They have been normal

:17:14.:17:18.

weeks to be quite honest. Life is full of turbulent ups and downs and

:17:19.:17:22.

positives. He had a really good couple of weeks and so have we. I

:17:23.:17:26.

would like to think every time Lewis comes to the race, it is a new start

:17:27.:17:30.

and that's what it has got to be, you can't afford to carry all the

:17:31.:17:34.

stuff from the past. Do you think he can be a world champion this year?

:17:35.:17:38.

Are you still believing? I am Lewis' biggest believer. I think we're

:17:39.:17:42.

going to win it this year. Well, best of luck. If you don't think

:17:43.:17:46.

like that well you will never win anything. You have got to be

:17:47.:17:49.

positive. He has got to nail this qualifying session. I think he will

:17:50.:17:53.

be fine. I think he will be good today. Thank you very much. Nice to

:17:54.:17:59.

see you. Nice to see you too. Lots of optimism in the Hamilton camp. It

:18:00.:18:03.

was a tough qualifying session for Sergio Perez. Did his car get stuck

:18:04.:18:08.

in second gear? He couldn't go down or up. It is not as if you have got

:18:09.:18:12.

a stick shift. Once it is in that position there is little the driver

:18:13.:18:16.

can do and that put him out of it. He lost Friday morning as well. He

:18:17.:18:24.

gave his car to a test driver. In reality only did 13 laps yesterday

:18:25.:18:28.

morning and this is a setback for them. These guys are quick in the

:18:29.:18:34.

straights and they have got a good raceable car. They are in a huge

:18:35.:18:40.

battle with McLaren. McLaren sneaked past them and this is a battle that

:18:41.:18:45.

will rumble on until the end? Clearly, I have to say McLaren have

:18:46.:18:49.

been the one that have been moving forward. Around here they are more

:18:50.:18:53.

competitive. Jenson Button has been really good today. Yesterday, he had

:18:54.:18:56.

the legs on Kevin Magnussen, but he was putting in some nice, neat times

:18:57.:19:00.

and the thing for me that was impressive, he was able to do it in

:19:01.:19:05.

the second and third lap on the tyre whereas others were dropping off.

:19:06.:19:08.

That bodes well for him and he is revelling in something that he feels

:19:09.:19:12.

in the car now. We're standing in the glorious sunshine here in Monza,

:19:13.:19:17.

but it has been stormy, not only at Spa, but since Spa. Yesterday, Toto

:19:18.:19:28.

Wolf has been explaining since that battle. What are the rules of

:19:29.:19:34.

engagement this weekend? Don't hit your team-mate! Judging by your pace

:19:35.:19:40.

during practise, you look to have an aadvantage over one lap which means

:19:41.:19:45.

your car will be on the front row of the grid. If it happens again, what

:19:46.:19:51.

happens then? Well, you know, we are optimistic and we had a good

:19:52.:19:54.

discussion. I doubt it will happen again. So you know, there has been

:19:55.:19:59.

lots of speculation what would happen, if it would happen, let's

:20:00.:20:02.

not discuss that yet. It is too controversial. Speculation driven by

:20:03.:20:08.

you because you said to the BBC yesterday actually that if they

:20:09.:20:15.

cannot do the job properly for you in the spirit of Mercedes-Benz you

:20:16.:20:20.

will look to change the driver line-up? The question is what would

:20:21.:20:23.

you do if they continue to crash into each other and my response was

:20:24.:20:27.

if they continue to crash into each other then we have to think about

:20:28.:20:32.

the line-up. How important is a German driver for Mercedes? We are a

:20:33.:20:36.

global company and we have big markets and a brand which is shining

:20:37.:20:41.

all over the world and this is why it is not important which

:20:42.:20:45.

nationality is sitting in the car. A lot has been made of the way the

:20:46.:20:48.

drivers are dealing with it on track. Can we talk about the

:20:49.:20:52.

management and the way you guys dealt with it? First of all how

:20:53.:20:55.

would you describe your management style? Well, you know, it is always

:20:56.:21:00.

very difficult to describe your own management style. You know,

:21:01.:21:04.

everybody has ups and downs. Sometimes you are emotional and you

:21:05.:21:10.

are less emotional. The most important thing is to be authentic

:21:11.:21:14.

and to continue to manage things the way you have always do it. Sometimes

:21:15.:21:18.

you will do it in a good way. Sometimes you will find out

:21:19.:21:22.

afterwards it wasn't perfect. We are all very emotional about the sport

:21:23.:21:27.

and emotions have driven us to where we are today. Motivation is part of

:21:28.:21:32.

an emotion and it is a strong emotion and this is why I believe

:21:33.:21:35.

generally that's important for the team. And if you could go back in

:21:36.:21:39.

time two weeks, would you have done anything differently in the

:21:40.:21:43.

aftermath of the Spa race? I'm not sure I would have answered your

:21:44.:21:53.

question back in Spa! You know, that was a very intense moment. Could I

:21:54.:22:02.

have reacted? I could have made a face less like that's me! Good luck,

:22:03.:22:13.

thank you. Thank you. Toto Devil Face Wolff. Mercedes are a global

:22:14.:22:19.

brand and yet they seem to want to interact with the public, Twitter.

:22:20.:22:24.

This weekend they are using a hashtag no sparring and they asked

:22:25.:22:27.

last weekend what the public thought of what happened on track between

:22:28.:22:30.

Nico and Lewis. Do you think that's right? They said to the public if

:22:31.:22:33.

you were running the team, what would you do? Personally, I thought

:22:34.:22:37.

that was a risky strategy because they might have got back information

:22:38.:22:43.

they didn't want to hear! But Toto is an open person and Nicky lauder

:22:44.:22:49.

is an open person. Toto says what he feels. It is run by emotion and we

:22:50.:22:52.

are here because someone has got the passion and drive and I don't think

:22:53.:22:57.

he can change his natural way of doing things and there's his

:22:58.:23:00.

management style and it allowed great racing. No questions about it.

:23:01.:23:04.

But there does have to be a calming hand on the situation every now and

:23:05.:23:10.

again and for me, the lines to say if they keep crashing into each

:23:11.:23:13.

other then we might have to look at the driver line-up was a shot across

:23:14.:23:17.

the bows to remind both drivers who the actual boss was and what the

:23:18.:23:23.

most important thing was which was a Mercedes-Benz Carwyns the grand --

:23:24.:23:30.

car wins the Grand Prix. The man in charge of Ferrari and when he turns

:23:31.:23:35.

up at Monza, it is like the king has arrived. He has his security. He is

:23:36.:23:40.

mobbed. Everybody here loves him. It is difficult to put that into

:23:41.:23:43.

prospective how big a name that he is even though he is a team boss. He

:23:44.:23:47.

goes on to the pit wall. He walks across to the garage and gets into a

:23:48.:23:53.

big conversation. There is a lot of love between Fernando Alonso and the

:23:54.:23:58.

boss. Whenever we get to Monza there is always talks of rumours

:23:59.:24:07.

particularly with Ferrari and the rumour in Ferrari HQ is president

:24:08.:24:12.

boss may not be so for too much longer. Has it got gravitas? We can

:24:13.:24:19.

hear from an Italian journalist and he can tell us his thoughts about

:24:20.:24:26.

what is happening in Ferrari. We're hearing talk about changes at

:24:27.:24:31.

the top of Ferrari. The stories are coming from the Italian media. What

:24:32.:24:35.

can you tell us? I tell you that it seems that it is true this time

:24:36.:24:42.

after said the same story for many, many years, without the boss moving.

:24:43.:24:46.

It time it seems that it is the right time for him to move. I don't

:24:47.:24:56.

know if he will resign or if he will be resigned, but anyway it seems the

:24:57.:25:06.

end of the story. Nevertheless, he is coming here today tomorrow and he

:25:07.:25:13.

will deny everything, but it seems after more than 20 years it is

:25:14.:25:20.

logical. He wants to have, I don't say other challenges like everybody,

:25:21.:25:25.

like all the sportsmen say, but adult quality of life I suppose.

:25:26.:25:39.

Fiat wants to continue him as boss waiting for another man to put in

:25:40.:25:45.

that top position, but it will take a while between the two nominations.

:25:46.:25:51.

You know, it's a big mess because he has been a big part of Ferrari. He

:25:52.:25:59.

is the hero of the modern Ferrari. Can you put a time scale on this?

:26:00.:26:03.

Can we expect an announcement tomorrow? No, I don't think the time

:26:04.:26:13.

is fixed. He wants to be the man that announces the best results ever

:26:14.:26:21.

by the economical point of view of Ferrari on the level of investment,

:26:22.:26:32.

turnover, profits and he will do that before the Paris Motor Show

:26:33.:26:35.

that starts at the beginning of October. So he wants to take first

:26:36.:26:42.

this satisfaction and then, I think, the time will be mature to find

:26:43.:26:48.

another solution between October and Christmas time. How will his

:26:49.:26:51.

departure affect the Formula One team? I think that nothing will

:26:52.:27:06.

change. Even Ferrari died and the Formula One team continued. They

:27:07.:27:10.

will continue because you cannot change a manager every two weeks

:27:11.:27:30.

like they do in football teams, but we don't know. He needs to create

:27:31.:27:33.

his own experience and then we will be in a position to judge him in a

:27:34.:27:39.

year. It is difficult to judge a man in a hysterical way after two

:27:40.:27:43.

months. Formula One, it is a sport of long times. It would be unfair to

:27:44.:27:54.

say the next man is good or is not good.

:27:55.:28:00.

We should listen with care to what he says. Interesting as well, he

:28:01.:28:04.

likens it to football, you can't be changing managers all the time. But

:28:05.:28:09.

Luca has been there for a long time? He is a stalwart of not just

:28:10.:28:13.

Ferrari, but Formula One. He helped direct the position that Formula One

:28:14.:28:16.

has gone in the past with a very, very strong hand and a lot of

:28:17.:28:19.

passion and heart, but ultimately, it sounds like there is a little bit

:28:20.:28:25.

more to this story than there has been in previous years. He will be

:28:26.:28:29.

difficult to replace. Big shoes to fill? Yes, very, very big shoes.

:28:30.:28:35.

Ferrari haven't been winning for a long time. Somebody who won his

:28:36.:28:39.

World Championship with McLaren 40 years ago, can you believe, is this

:28:40.:28:46.

man. How alive are the memories standing at such an iconic circuit

:28:47.:28:51.

like Monza? It is always very special to be in Monza. I think

:28:52.:28:56.

everybody who comes to Monza has extra emotions because the place,

:28:57.:29:04.

the Italian fan, the Ferrari history, it is always great to be

:29:05.:29:08.

here. Can you believe it is 40 years since you won that championship?

:29:09.:29:12.

Well, it was 40 years, but it feels like a few years ago and again, it

:29:13.:29:20.

was a battle between Ferrari and McLaren. It was Nicky Lauder. You

:29:21.:29:25.

have still got a lot of passion. You are still young at heart, tell me

:29:26.:29:31.

the name is still going on. You have your nephew leading the American

:29:32.:29:38.

Sports Car Championship. But tell us about your grandson? It is great to

:29:39.:29:42.

have both racing and doing well. They have pressure because of the

:29:43.:29:50.

name and they have to perform. One is doing the Formula Renault in

:29:51.:29:54.

England and I hope he can clinch the championship. I'm proud to have my

:29:55.:30:00.

grandchild doing well. Now, I feel old! I did his first interview when

:30:01.:30:05.

he was six years old. What did you make last week at Spa of the

:30:06.:30:10.

incident between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton and who is the

:30:11.:30:12.

strongest to win this? They are pushing a little too hard.

:30:13.:30:23.

At the beginning of the race, if it was the last lap, the last corner,

:30:24.:30:27.

yes, but they are pushing the envelope. They want to win the

:30:28.:30:31.

championship. And I think that's part of the show. Mercedes left it

:30:32.:30:40.

open for the deciders to decide what to do -- for the drivers. Great for

:30:41.:30:44.

the racing fans, great for the championship. Lewis is more

:30:45.:30:51.

emotional. He is a fantastic driver. Nico is more cool, consistent. But

:30:52.:30:56.

each has his own style and it's great for motorsport to have these

:30:57.:31:01.

guys. I like the new Formula One, a lot of overtaking this year, more

:31:02.:31:06.

than ever. I enjoy it. It has been lovely to be to you, thank you very

:31:07.:31:10.

much for joining us today. In fact Lewis Hamilton has not have easy

:31:11.:31:14.

qualifying sessions. We have to go back to Spain in May since he had a

:31:15.:31:17.

concession. Let's look at some of these ones. Monaco, we all know what

:31:18.:31:23.

happened. Yes, this was Nico Rosberg coming down into the corner, he

:31:24.:31:27.

basically locked up, and it meant a yellow flag, you can see Nico

:31:28.:31:32.

Rosberg on the left, he could not go faster. He felt Nico Rosberg, his

:31:33.:31:37.

team-mate, did this on purpose, and it rattled him. Moving on to Canada.

:31:38.:31:42.

We think of this as Lewis Hamilton's playground. Yes, stop

:31:43.:31:48.

start with chicanes. He didn't quite execute it as he had. This was the

:31:49.:31:53.

big spin in Austria. In reality in the previous run he was already

:31:54.:31:57.

quickest, and attacked too much in turn eight, and got a penalty taken

:31:58.:32:02.

away. It was a big, big disaster. Ultimately I think Silverstone was

:32:03.:32:07.

the one. That was a low point. You can see Nico Rosberg going past

:32:08.:32:11.

Lewis Hamilton, he aborts, he thought he had done enough on a wet

:32:12.:32:18.

track. He had not. And also he gave his team-mate a draft down the

:32:19.:32:21.

straight to help him to pole position. He said this was the worst

:32:22.:32:24.

weekend of his life will stop ultimately the brake failure in

:32:25.:32:29.

Hockenheim, he could not do anything about that. You are in the lap of

:32:30.:32:34.

the gods. Off into the barrier. Great recovery in the race but it

:32:35.:32:39.

was a recovery. Ultimately we get to Budapest, Fire on the first lap of

:32:40.:32:44.

qualifying. You just see his frustration, and he cannot believe

:32:45.:32:48.

it has gone wrong once again. So he goes off, has a lovely holiday,

:32:49.:32:53.

comes back after the break, and he must be having thoughts heading into

:32:54.:32:56.

this qualifying session, can it be right? How mentally strong is he?

:32:57.:33:00.

Very strong mentally when things are going his way, when things have gone

:33:01.:33:05.

against him then it seems to boil up inside him. Sometimes it overflows

:33:06.:33:10.

in terms of his reactions, and in terms of the way he attacks. I think

:33:11.:33:14.

his father said pretty well, this could be a good weekend for him, as

:33:15.:33:18.

Nico Rosberg lost in the practice session this morning, and the last

:33:19.:33:21.

preparation before going into qualifying. How much will that be on

:33:22.:33:28.

the mind of Nico Rosberg? He has a solid mind but it is definitely

:33:29.:33:32.

there. The key is to start on pole position and the run into the first

:33:33.:33:35.

corner. It will certainly be exciting. I hope we don't have to

:33:36.:33:40.

see Toto Wolff's devil face any more. We have live qualifying and

:33:41.:33:46.

the build-up coming up in just 40 minutes on BBC1. It has been a long

:33:47.:33:51.

time since Lewis Hamilton has had a poor position, could it be very

:33:52.:33:59.

shortly? -- pole position. Thanks for watching, good I.
