Hello and welcome to a sweltering Malaysia. The first on track action

:00:00.:01:12.

will be coming up live in just a few minutes. But here is Allan, to tell

:01:13.:01:18.

us what we can expect over the weekend. The conditions always amaze

:01:19.:01:22.

me, Allan. It's not just the temperatures. The humidify as well

:01:23.:01:27.

makes it feel 0 degrees hotter. The cars feel it, the tyres, the drivers

:01:28.:01:34.

feel like it. It feels leak you're boiling from the inside out.

:01:35.:01:38.

Australia was all about the unknown heading into the new era of the

:01:39.:01:43.

sport. We've come to Malaysia, very different conditions, very different

:01:44.:01:46.

kir suggest. How many unknowns are there still? There's a lot. I don't

:01:47.:01:50.

believe they'll actually get on top of all of them until probably

:01:51.:01:55.

three-quarters fully through the season. The reality is some of the

:01:56.:01:58.

teams will pick up information and they'll understand a little bit

:01:59.:02:02.

more. But when they come here, it's a new environment, as you say and

:02:03.:02:06.

they'll be trying to understand how the car works on this circuit in the

:02:07.:02:09.

and in this heat. the car works on this circuit in the

:02:10.:02:11.

and in this Plenty of unknowns in Australia. But on Sunday night in

:02:12.:02:14.

Australia, the result was even unknown. Daniel Ricciardo put in a

:02:15.:02:19.

really impressive performance but he ultimately lost that second place.

:02:20.:02:25.

His Red Bull car was deemed to have breached fuel regulations banked Red

:02:26.:02:28.

Bull will going to appeal that. But for today, it is Nico Rosberg who

:02:29.:02:38.

leads the driver's championship. No mention there of Lewis Hamilton.

:02:39.:02:48.

Williams have more points after one race. Ben Edwards and Tony are in

:02:49.:02:58.

the commentary box for us this morning. The teams really need all

:02:59.:03:03.

the track they can get this season? Yes, that's right. Several of the

:03:04.:03:07.

teams, Lee, last time out in Melbourne, got hardly any running on

:03:08.:03:12.

the Friday, particularly on the weekend. Lotus had a nightmare of a

:03:13.:03:19.

weekend there. So they're desperate to get a run in. Caterham had a

:03:20.:03:26.

tough time as well. Let's not forget that Pirelli have added an extra set

:03:27.:03:34.

of tyres for this race. Pirelli have the medium and -- and the hard tyres

:03:35.:03:37.

here, so the teams will need to find out a bit about them. But last time

:03:38.:03:42.

in Australia, some teams didn't even get out of the garage. How much is

:03:43.:03:47.

about tyres? As Ben mentioned, they'll have the hard tyre. They'll

:03:48.:03:50.

run on that for this session generally. I think the reality is

:03:51.:03:54.

most of the teams will be trying to understand how the cars and the cool

:03:55.:03:59.

packages are working in this condition. The teams will be trying

:04:00.:04:04.

to just maximise the track time for that as opposed to tyre development,

:04:05.:04:08.

which is maybe more this afternoon. 10 days since we were in Australia.

:04:09.:04:11.

Realistic ale, how much work can be done within that time period to

:04:12.:04:15.

improve these cars? Well, a lot of teams have done a lot of work. Lotus

:04:16.:04:18.

has been mentioned. They've been working extremely hard because they

:04:19.:04:21.

had a lot of troubles. For them, I think just finishing the race will

:04:22.:04:25.

be be a start. They hope to see the fruits of all of their battles, if

:04:26.:04:29.

you like. The for the -- for the other teams at the front of the

:04:30.:04:32.

grid, it is more tweaking, except McLaren. They came with major

:04:33.:04:36.

updates an they say it saves half a second a lap. We'll have to see.

:04:37.:04:43.

Alland and I are going to head out oto -- to the lap. You can get in

:04:44.:04:48.

touch with the hashtag or leave a comment on the BBC sports page.

:04:49.:04:54.

Local time, just coming up for 10 o'clock in the morning. The air

:04:55.:04:57.

temperature, 29 degrees. Tram temperature, up to - -track

:04:58.:05:01.

temperature, up to 38 degrees already. That's partly what puts the

:05:02.:05:07.

strain on the tyres here. It is also an abrasive surface. We know they've

:05:08.:05:12.

gone with these harder compounds in this race, the hard and medium. The

:05:13.:05:17.

green light comes on in the pit lane to indicate that the first session

:05:18.:05:21.

of the Malaysian Grand Prix are under way. Ferrari are quick to send

:05:22.:05:27.

their car out. Fernando Alonso, three-time winner of the maugs Grand

:05:28.:05:30.

Prix is first out on to the track and gives us a view of this track.

:05:31.:05:38.

Allan, this is track that the drivers generally enjoin. It --

:05:39.:05:45.

enjoy. It's her man's best creation. It has tight corners. It's really,

:05:46.:05:49.

from a racing point of view, going to be dictated by the two long

:05:50.:05:52.

straights. The last straight down into the hairpin and then the start

:05:53.:05:57.

and finish, because that's the two DRS zones. There's a real balance in

:05:58.:06:03.

trying to get your car ready, well-balanced with ear dynamic grip,

:06:04.:06:07.

but then you need to be slippery one those straights when the overtaking

:06:08.:06:12.

is going to happen. You like me are looking forward to some of the

:06:13.:06:17.

shots, some of the images we'll be getting here. There are some fast

:06:18.:06:22.

corners, five and six. There's also that fast chicane towards the end of

:06:23.:06:26.

the lap, which was generally flat out, but we're wondering if it is

:06:27.:06:31.

going to be flat out right now. We were talking about that yesterday.

:06:32.:06:36.

Alonso is coming up to a right-hander. Check the drinks

:06:37.:06:42.

button. I think he's definitely going to need that today. But this

:06:43.:06:47.

is a flat out. Normally it was flat out left and right kink. But with

:06:48.:06:52.

the reduced downforce this year, there is question marks. I

:06:53.:06:54.

personally don't think it is going to be flat out. We will watch the

:06:55.:06:59.

onboards to find out over the course of the weekend to see if they are

:07:00.:07:05.

flat out. Here we are riding with Fernando Alonso as he comes to tend

:07:06.:07:09.

of the first lap. It is likely he will come back into the pit. Now,

:07:10.:07:14.

new nose cone on the new front wing on the front of the McMcClaren there

:07:15.:07:21.

of Jenson Button. We got used to the McClaren looking slightly different

:07:22.:07:24.

with almost Nos industrials on the front of the cars but now they have

:07:25.:07:28.

tore ro Rosso or perhaps Force India-looking front of a car. I have

:07:29.:07:32.

to say it's not quite as attractive as it was. But these fittings are

:07:33.:07:35.

part of if updates we are seeing from McLaren on the weekend. Jenson

:07:36.:07:40.

Button was talking about how they've brought nor downforce into the car.

:07:41.:07:45.

That's the aim now. They have a very drivable car at this stage. He's

:07:46.:07:48.

been happy with the way the car has been performing through testing.

:07:49.:07:54.

What they have been lacking is that ultimate downforce, the ultimate

:07:55.:07:56.

grip through the corners. That is part of the package they've brought

:07:57.:08:01.

to the car this weekend. So we're seeing the first nose change of the

:08:02.:08:06.

season. Tony Dobbins is with me. Seasoned writer on all things F1.

:08:07.:08:10.

Tony, what do you think? I like the way it was before, actually? Yes, I

:08:11.:08:16.

agree with you there. Anything they think might find a hundredth or two,

:08:17.:08:22.

they'll go with. So obviously their wind intel is telling them that's

:08:23.:08:27.

the way to go. Of course, knocked the end of the rose out last time in

:08:28.:08:32.

Melbourne during one one of the pit stops. Jenson Button straight back

:08:33.:08:36.

into the pits. We're seeing quite a few cars straight out and straight

:08:37.:08:40.

back in again. The good news is it looks like -- it looks like most

:08:41.:08:43.

people are getting an installation lap in early. That's something we

:08:44.:08:47.

didn't see in Australia and weren't expecting to see either. In the end,

:08:48.:08:50.

most cars did get out there. It shows you what a couple of weeks can

:08:51.:08:57.

do. Already we've seen lots of cars come out. That's quite impressive.

:08:58.:09:05.

It's just Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, the two Red Bulls and the Grosjean

:09:06.:09:10.

gross, the Lotus, who are yet to come out of the pit. Nico Rosberg

:09:11.:09:15.

won the first race of the season in Melbourne. Never had a victory here,

:09:16.:09:21.

but he has done well here. He scored Mercedes' first podium on their

:09:22.:09:25.

return to F1 in 2010. He has a lot of confidence about driving here.

:09:26.:09:27.

His grid position was also that season, 2010, when he started in

:09:28.:09:31.

second place on the grid. Actually led part of the race when he raced

:09:32.:09:35.

for Williams way back in 2009. So he has no fears with this circuit, no

:09:36.:09:38.

doubt about it. And what a brilliant start to the championship it was for

:09:39.:09:45.

him, Tony. OK, Lewis Hamilton wasn't -- wasn't able the fight him an we

:09:46.:09:49.

didn't get that real confrontation between these two, because they

:09:50.:09:52.

certainly seem to have the fastest car, but it was the perfect start

:09:53.:09:56.

for Nico Rosberg. It was and I think we might well see that battle here

:09:57.:09:59.

because I expect it will be very quick. You know, if Lewis has a

:10:00.:10:03.

decent, reliable run, you can bet they'll both be at the front an we

:10:04.:10:09.

might have to see some not team orders but some sensible team

:10:10.:10:14.

interplay. Yes, well having a look there as the car comes back into the

:10:15.:10:19.

pits. Of course it was hear last year - the main controversy last

:10:20.:10:24.

year was about the team orders or lack of them, or Vettel obeying

:10:25.:10:31.

them. Rosberg was catching Hamilton in the closing stages of the race,

:10:32.:10:37.

had a faster car, but he was told to hold station. Absolutely. I think

:10:38.:10:41.

Nico was a bit peeved about that. But he was very mature about it. In

:10:42.:10:46.

contrast with Red Bull, there was a lot of controversy there. They were

:10:47.:10:49.

very sensible about it. But you know, you know that Nico wasn't

:10:50.:10:52.

happy about that and he certainly wouldn't be happy if it happened

:10:53.:10:56.

this year. No, that's right. This is interesting. He was on the brakes

:10:57.:10:59.

coming into the pits here and very unstable. It's interesting, he had

:11:00.:11:05.

to give a big old -- as he came into into the pits. They are standing

:11:06.:11:09.

hard on the brakes there. But he has already done an intel laigs lam. It

:11:10.:11:16.

indicates the brake wire system not set up perfectly just yet. Problem

:11:17.:11:21.

with the car. Yes, locked up the rear, problem with the car. It is

:11:22.:11:25.

very unusual to see that. Spot on there, Ben. It seems a little bit

:11:26.:11:29.

unusual, especially when everything seemed to go according to plan last

:11:30.:11:33.

time out. So let's keep an eye on that and hope that Nico Rosberg

:11:34.:11:37.

doesn't have any problems. Meanwhile, Romain Grosjean and

:11:38.:11:40.

Daniel Ricciardo have both gone out and done their installation laps.

:11:41.:11:44.

We're just waiting for Sebastian Vettel now. McLaren has some of this

:11:45.:11:52.

tank over that front wick wing. This is an idea to give them an idea of

:11:53.:11:58.

the wind flow on that front wink. What they're trying to do is get

:11:59.:12:03.

more air flow underneath and then through the car and then using the

:12:04.:12:07.

bottom and the diffuser at the back of the car to generate as much

:12:08.:12:09.

downforce as possible. That's basically what the teams are all

:12:10.:12:13.

trying to achieve. But they've gone about it in different ways this

:12:14.:12:18.

year, Tony. We still have quite different nose design. Of course,

:12:19.:12:23.

Mercedes themselveses have a very low nose. I think that's probably

:12:24.:12:27.

the most attractive treatment. I'm not a fan of the Ferrari nose, itch

:12:28.:12:37.

I've got to admit. But that looks very neat. Sebastian Vettel does

:12:38.:12:42.

come out for his installation lap. The four times world champion

:12:43.:12:47.

three-time winner here himself, like Alonso. And when he did take that

:12:48.:12:53.

victory from Mark Webber in fairly controversial circumstances but went

:12:54.:12:57.

on to dominate the latter part of the season. At that early stage of

:12:58.:12:59.

the season we didn't really know that Red Bull had that level of

:13:00.:13:03.

dominance that we were going to see later on. They were struggling with

:13:04.:13:09.

the tyres at that point of the season if you remember. Vettel was

:13:10.:13:14.

pushing for every point he could get. Absolutely. When we got to

:13:15.:13:19.

mid-season it looked like Mercedes was in the ballpark. Then they steam

:13:20.:13:22.

rolled them. Of course, the news about Red Bull, the stories about

:13:23.:13:27.

Red Bull, really coming out of Melbourne, is all about Daniel

:13:28.:13:33.

Ricciardo's exclusion. Yes He drove beautifully, didn't he? Not just in

:13:34.:13:38.

the race, but in qualifying. The fastest in fall fiing. Brilliant all

:13:39.:13:41.

weekend. Absolutely. Finishes second to the delight of the home fans. Yes

:13:42.:13:47.

Then what happens? For me, it was a tragedy, because it was such a feel

:13:48.:13:53.

good story for F1. Mark Webber is retired from Formula One. You have

:13:54.:13:58.

in new Australian, smiley star they all took to and loved. He finishes

:13:59.:14:02.

second. They talk about the future of Australia beyond 2016. Then he's

:14:03.:14:10.

kicked out. Australia wakes up on Monday morning to the newspapers

:14:11.:14:16.

which said "Grand Fast, instead of Grand Prix. To me that was a missed

:14:17.:14:20.

opportunity. You have to regulate the sport. I just wondered whether,

:14:21.:14:24.

perhaps, it might not have been better on this occasion to have a

:14:25.:14:29.

chat behind closed doors about, you know, the operation of these fuel

:14:30.:14:34.

flow meters an not have that start to the season. But I know a lot of

:14:35.:14:37.

people would disagree with that. I know. Let's quickly explain what it

:14:38.:14:41.

was all about. Of course, part of the new regulations is that there is

:14:42.:14:45.

a fuel flow rate of 100kg per hour. Yes That is assessed by a new device

:14:46.:14:50.

that's fitted to all the cars. It's supplied by an independent

:14:51.:14:52.

manufacturer, but all the teams have to go out and buy it and fit it to

:14:53.:14:58.

their cars Yes. That tells the FIA whether you're within the fuel flow

:14:59.:15:04.

rate or not. That's right. You have a fuel flow limit and fuel fill

:15:05.:15:10.

limit. In this instance, Red Bull said, the experts said according to

:15:11.:15:15.

the device they had actually exceeded the fill. We haven't seen

:15:16.:15:20.

anything in the figures. You hear it in the background. I stress, that

:15:21.:15:27.

it's not known. It will come out in the appeal on the 14th of April. Red

:15:28.:15:36.

Bull said the census -- consensus from Friday was inaccurate. So they

:15:37.:15:40.

went from the data provided by their injectors. Now, the gist of their

:15:41.:15:45.

defence is going to be that in actual fact, the steward's decision,

:15:46.:15:49.

which says that they were asked to turn down the fuel flow, was based

:15:50.:15:54.

on a technical directive which has no regulatory value. It's actually,

:15:55.:15:58.

they complied with the rules as it's written. That's, I think, is going

:15:59.:16:03.

to be their defence. It's a very important issue for Formula One.

:16:04.:16:06.

It's important they get this resolved quickly. Under these new

:16:07.:16:09.

rules you're going to have situations where people are testing

:16:10.:16:11.

things, they push the limits. Formula One teams do all the time,

:16:12.:16:14.

whether it's pushing the limits of the car on the track or, indeed,

:16:15.:16:18.

with the regulations. And, clearly, Red Bull are looking to do that a

:16:19.:16:24.

bit. Yes. They feel disgruntled that the device, from their point of

:16:25.:16:28.

view, didn't deliver what they wanted. Ultimately, the FIA has to

:16:29.:16:33.

make a ruling and it will be interesting to see how it comes out.

:16:34.:16:38.

It is. It is almost a test case. It is a good point you make make. They

:16:39.:16:43.

say they need a result quickly but we'll be three races in by the time

:16:44.:16:48.

we get the result. What will they do here, what will they do in bar rain?

:16:49.:16:54.

It's a fascinating issue. Cars have done their installation laps now.

:16:55.:16:57.

Everybody ec whiching over the various bits of equipment. A few

:16:58.:17:03.

little bits and pieces on the Marussia team this weekend. Cooling,

:17:04.:17:07.

of course, is a crucial part of making a car fast here in Malaysia

:17:08.:17:12.

because of the tie temperatures. Esteban Gutierrez about to leave the

:17:13.:17:16.

pit lane for Sauber. A difficult start to the season for Sauber. Both

:17:17.:17:19.

drivers talking yesterday about how the car is actually overweight at

:17:20.:17:23.

this stage. It would be tough to get these new spec cars down to the

:17:24.:17:27.

weight limit, even though the weight limit have been increased for this

:17:28.:17:30.

new season. Very difficult for teams to build a car down to that level

:17:31.:17:34.

with all the new bits and pieces associated with the hybrid systems

:17:35.:17:38.

on the car. And the car is definitely overweight. Overkwagth

:17:39.:17:42.

even with Gutierrez dput in the car, and he's one of the lightest at 61

:17:43.:17:48.

kilos. There is no chance for Gutierrez's team-mate, is there? We

:17:49.:17:53.

were talking about that yesterday. He's about 14 kilos heavier. That's

:17:54.:17:57.

right. There's going to be a -- it's going to be a difficult one for him.

:17:58.:18:01.

I'm talking rubbish. More than half a second, but even so. Even

:18:02.:18:08.

three-tenths per kilo, he is over the half a second. Let's get down to

:18:09.:18:14.

the pits now. Allan is at McLaren. Yes, we're at McLaren. One of the

:18:15.:18:21.

teams that's made a big updates for this race. Ben as you mentioned

:18:22.:18:24.

before on the installation lap, it is more of a sweeping noise. I

:18:25.:18:28.

personally like the visual aspects of it. But this apparently gives

:18:29.:18:34.

more downforce and obviously a little bit more at the front. Just a

:18:35.:18:39.

little bit more in their mid corner just to flick it round. Also, they

:18:40.:18:44.

have some tweaks at the back of the car we haven't quite seen yet. And

:18:45.:18:47.

the two cars are running different cooling packages. The reason is they

:18:48.:18:50.

have two different ideas. They want to see what the best solution is. In

:18:51.:18:55.

two practice runs they're going to try both on both cars and make a

:18:56.:19:01.

decision afterwards. Beautiful images there. There's the test and

:19:02.:19:05.

development driver for Sauber. As we see, Gutierrez is out there. I'm

:19:06.:19:08.

glad to say that we've been joined by another man who is a testing and

:19:09.:19:14.

development driver for the Formula One team, for the Caterham driving

:19:15.:19:26.

Team Alexander Rossi. You're racing GP2, you're back into that, and

:19:27.:19:33.

looking forward to that. Yes, GP2 unfortunately isn't here this

:19:34.:19:36.

weekend. But we will be in bar rain next week. Just came from the test

:19:37.:19:40.

in bar rain. But happy to be here. Happy to be at the first Grand Prix

:19:41.:19:45.

myself this year. A big weekend in terms of Caterham. Of course, Tony

:19:46.:19:52.

fer nen dez, the Malaysian owner of Caterham. There's always a lot after

:19:53.:19:57.

attention for Caterham at this Grand Prix. Particular cus errix son,

:19:58.:20:01.

actually, but, yes, this is our home race. Tony is obviously quite a

:20:02.:20:06.

prominent figure in Malaysia and Australia didn't really go as we had

:20:07.:20:10.

hoped. So we're hoping to bounce back here and take advantage of

:20:11.:20:14.

anything that comes out way. Of course, looking at these front wing

:20:15.:20:19.

design, the Caterham front wing design has caused a bitter of mirth

:20:20.:20:22.

in the offseason. It is slightly different to what the other teams

:20:23.:20:27.

have gone for. Any changes to this? Or will they stick with this system

:20:28.:20:30.

farce you know at the moment? I think all the teams are going to

:20:31.:20:34.

bring up this come the European round. What Caterham has come up

:20:35.:20:37.

with at the moment is a bit of an unknown. But, yes, everyone is

:20:38.:20:42.

looking to change, improve it, as much as they can before Barcelona.

:20:43.:20:51.

Onboard with ridiculous -- Christian Eriksen this year. He had a bit of a

:20:52.:20:58.

baptism of fire with all the issues with these Upower plants and then of

:20:59.:21:02.

course a sad retirement in the race. He seemed to be going OK in the

:21:03.:21:07.

Grand Prix but, sadly, one of the non-fin anyone fers. Yes,

:21:08.:21:12.

absolutely. I think everyone needs to realise that we were able to get

:21:13.:21:18.

a car in on merit. The fact that both cars didn't finish, obviously

:21:19.:21:22.

kind of quashed that highlight of the weekend. Having said that, I

:21:23.:21:26.

think everyone is quite pleased with the way the car is going. If we can

:21:27.:21:31.

get the reliability out of it, I think we will see a step forward.

:21:32.:21:40.

One of the heroes sh -- One of the heroes on screen now -- one of the

:21:41.:21:47.

heroes of Melbourne on screen now. Where the exclucs of Daniel

:21:48.:21:55.

Ricciardo, he ended up with a fine fifth place finish. That was the

:21:56.:21:59.

mark of the man. He was beating himself up about not being on the

:22:00.:22:04.

podium. He was saying had he not done that, he would have been on the

:22:05.:22:08.

podium. He is the star of the season for sure. If you look at last year,

:22:09.:22:14.

the one in Canada, and the other one where they took the exhaust off and

:22:15.:22:19.

he found some time to drive in Texas, he had an excellent race

:22:20.:22:25.

there. We just saw Felipe Massa, who is the testing and development

:22:26.:22:29.

driver for Williams. So he is also keeping an eye on things. Another

:22:30.:22:33.

guy you're racing against, Alex. Let's get a quick update on the

:22:34.:22:36.

conditions at the moment. Lee. Thanks, Ben. At the moment, it is 39

:22:37.:22:42.

degrees track temperature. The humidity is around about 60%.

:22:43.:22:45.

There's no chance of rain for the moment. Before we came on air, Allan

:22:46.:22:52.

and I went into one of the garages and the temperatures is there is

:22:53.:22:55.

just colossal. When they're starting up the car, there's so much heat

:22:56.:23:00.

that radiates from the cars, it's just unbelieven. It's always

:23:01.:23:06.

interesting to see the drivers run the circuit. That never ceases to

:23:07.:23:11.

amaze me. I was talking to Kevin Magnussen and he said he went out on

:23:12.:23:15.

the track at 12 o'clock, the hot test part of the day, just to get

:23:16.:23:20.

used to the conditions. I don't know if you've run it at all? No, but

:23:21.:23:25.

I've walked it. That counts. Thank you, Lee. Over the weekend, on our

:23:26.:23:32.

coverage, Mark Webber will be talking about the demands of racing

:23:33.:23:36.

under these kind of conditions. Malaysia and Singapore are the two

:23:37.:23:39.

most difficult, yaelly, in terms of the heat and the huh many I hadty

:23:40.:23:42.

for the drivers. And Mark Webber will be taking us through how

:23:43.:23:46.

drivers prepare and some of the testing demands on the bodies from

:23:47.:23:49.

that point of view. So that will be very interesting. Don't forget you

:23:50.:23:55.

can get in touch with us by tweeting us using the hashtag or comment on

:23:56.:24:01.

the Facebook page. Good to have some of your questions an comments

:24:02.:24:06.

already. Abdul saying should they install speakers at the end of the

:24:07.:24:11.

car to intimidate last year enjoin signs. This has been one of the big

:24:12.:24:15.

stories. Thank you, Abdul. Yesterday, when Sebastian Vettel was

:24:16.:24:22.

asked about the engines, he made a derogatory comment, which sadly, we

:24:23.:24:28.

cannot repeat. He also said when he fell on the pit wall, he said it was

:24:29.:24:33.

quite yetter than being in a bar. So he seems very anti-it. But that's

:24:34.:24:38.

not across the board. Some of the other drivers are quite positive

:24:39.:24:46.

about it. It's interesting actually. Other drivers say you can hear more

:24:47.:24:51.

things going on. It hasn't got the ground-shaking violence that, you

:24:52.:24:53.

know, the old engines had but it's just different. I think it's

:24:54.:24:58.

something we'll get used to. Alex, kwhaegs your take on the new engine

:24:59.:25:02.

sound? To be honest, this is the first time I've heard this morning.

:25:03.:25:06.

I think the tone is fine. It's just the volume is a bit quiet. At the

:25:07.:25:09.

same time we have this discussion every time there's a massive

:25:10.:25:12.

regulation change. People don't like the way it looks. Now they don't

:25:13.:25:16.

like the way it sounds. It was the same issue when we went from the VN

:25:17.:25:20.

to the V8s. I think people will get used to it. It's one of the things

:25:21.:25:25.

it will take a good couple of races for people to wrap their heads

:25:26.:25:29.

around. I quite agree with that. It is all about the quality of the

:25:30.:25:35.

racing. Of course in GP2, you'll now be louder than Formula One cars.

:25:36.:25:40.

Yes, I'm very proud of that. Let's talk about that. There was talk over

:25:41.:25:45.

the winter whether these cars would end up not much quicker than GP2.

:25:46.:25:52.

But as it turns out, they are still a good chunk faster. The teams are

:25:53.:25:56.

talking about developing them four seconds faster during the season. So

:25:57.:26:00.

I don't think there's any problem there. Do you? No, we were just in

:26:01.:26:05.

bar rain this past week and we were find at a similar pace. But I think

:26:06.:26:09.

with all the issues everyone was having in Bahrain, I won't be like

:26:10.:26:14.

that in a week. They still have a solid, three or four seconds on us,

:26:15.:26:21.

which should be the way, I think. They should be a step up, yes.

:26:22.:26:25.

Ferrari is one of the most successful taements here in

:26:26.:26:28.

Malaysia. Michael Schumacher seemed to like this place right from the

:26:29.:26:41.

very beginning when he came here. Then there was Eddie ir-Irvine.

:26:42.:26:54.

There was the one in 2012 when they said it was a far worse start than

:26:55.:27:00.

they'd experienced this season. Yesterday when they were talking

:27:01.:27:05.

about it, they said they're not going to be despondent, there's

:27:06.:27:10.

potential in the car. You're right about Ferrari, that fantastic 2001,

:27:11.:27:15.

when Michael and Reubens both went off and came back on again. They

:27:16.:27:22.

were in the pan seats. Yeah, Michael certainly adored this place and if

:27:23.:27:29.

you watch him through five and six, it was fantastic. Alonso is

:27:30.:27:35.

currently -- currently quickest. It is very early days here. Jenson

:27:36.:27:43.

Button is third, Felipe Massa is in fourth. A few of you have been

:27:44.:27:49.

getting in touch and telling us where you're listening. You may be

:27:50.:27:56.

anywhere round the world, listening to us on Radio 25, who have their

:27:57.:28:05.

25th anniversary this year. Jason says, "Insomnia is useful when F1

:28:06.:28:11.

practice is on the other side of the kworld." I hope you can stay with

:28:12.:28:17.

us, Jason. Kevin says, "The best feeling about rough, unwell and not

:28:18.:28:26.

sleeping, is watching F1." Great to have your company wherever you are

:28:27.:28:30.

around the world. Whatever the time is with you, it is 23 minutes past

:28:31.:28:35.

10 in the morning here in Malaysia. Interestingly enough, caffeine is

:28:36.:28:39.

one of the things they put in McLaren's drinks for Malaysia.

:28:40.:28:44.

Really? Yes, I was amazed by that. I thought it was a no-no. But the

:28:45.:28:52.

caffeine as well as the salts, your proteins, they put the caffeine in

:28:53.:28:58.

there as well. Alonso goes fic -- quicker again there. Alex, the back

:28:59.:29:02.

end of that car was moving quite around a lot. Yes, I think here,

:29:03.:29:07.

even more so in Australia, you are going to see a lot of traction

:29:08.:29:17.

limitations. We all know how much more torquey these engines are and

:29:18.:29:21.

how difficult it is to control that. I think as the weekend progresses

:29:22.:29:27.

that will be reduced but in this practice session, there there'll be

:29:28.:29:39.

a lot of it, I think. What you call a traction event is what we call

:29:40.:29:43.

sliding, pretty much, I suppose? Yes, correct. Traction is obviously

:29:44.:29:47.

when the wheel is straight you're trying to go to power and the wheels

:29:48.:29:53.

are just spinning. When you have the steering lock again, you try to go

:29:54.:29:56.

to power in the back and it steps out, I guess. Both are negative. I

:29:57.:30:01.

would say... Oh, oh, we have a Lotus stopped. Oh, dare. This has become a

:30:02.:30:06.

bit of a familiar story. We were hoping things were better. It is

:30:07.:30:10.

Romain Grosjean's car and several marshals have gathered around it

:30:11.:30:15.

already. They have backed off for a moment because obviously cars are

:30:16.:30:17.

still going around the track. It has just stopped. There's no dank. It

:30:18.:30:21.

looks like it's come to a halt somewhere. That's a poor start again

:30:22.:30:25.

for Lotus. Stopped at turn 10 in fact. So a difficult beginning for

:30:26.:30:30.

Romain Grosjean. Pastor Maldonado has done one installation lap so

:30:31.:30:36.

far. But that's so far. Magnussen now is second by the way, just a

:30:37.:30:41.

moment ago. So McLaren is running second and third with Vergne fourth,

:30:42.:30:52.

bot Bottas in fifth. Let's go down to Allan. This field is going to be

:30:53.:30:57.

more representative of lap times than what they were in Melbourne. If

:30:58.:31:03.

you look down to centre fin of engine cover, there is a cover,

:31:04.:31:07.

that's something they tested in Bahrain. It is for -- it is for

:31:08.:31:12.

cooling, trying to get all that hot air out of there. That's more than a

:31:13.:31:16.

thousand degrees cell use that that thing is working out. Talking about

:31:17.:31:20.

traction, rare tyres. Definitely this is going to be a traction

:31:21.:31:25.

limited race. Yes, a couple of hairpins as we were talking about,

:31:26.:31:29.

the last corner, the penultimate corner as well. Tourn 4 is -- turn 4

:31:30.:31:34.

is pretty tight. And turn 9 they drop down to about 45 miles per

:31:35.:31:40.

hour. So several key corners where getting the speed down is crucial.

:31:41.:31:45.

They're getting a bit of a hammering. Lotus looks like they may

:31:46.:31:50.

be losing another session. When they're looking at mileage, it is

:31:51.:31:55.

just what they don't need at the moment, is it? Z no. But they

:31:56.:32:04.

managed 30 laps in the race in Australia, which is more than they

:32:05.:32:07.

were bargaining on. So they've got something. It's awful to see that,

:32:08.:32:12.

really, particularly with a driver like Grosjean, who finished last

:32:13.:32:16.

season in such an impressive way. We were all hoping he would kick on

:32:17.:32:19.

from there and become one of the front runners. So it's not happy

:32:20.:32:24.

days for Romain at the moment. It's tough. He seems to be coping with it

:32:25.:32:31.

reasonably. He got a bit Eddy, he -- edji, we heard it in Melbourne, a

:32:32.:32:39.

bit of frustration creeping. He talked bit that yesterday. He said

:32:40.:32:46.

we had changed things in the car but there was still frustration there.

:32:47.:32:50.

It was interesting, I was talking to Allan about that -- he was talking

:32:51.:32:53.

to Allan about that at the end of last season and he said initially he

:32:54.:32:58.

would get very ooir rate and frustrated on the radio and he'd

:32:59.:33:06.

come on the radio, all heated up, and saying, "I've got no graec! I've

:33:07.:33:14.

got no brake." But he's calmed down then. Maybe it's coming back a bit.

:33:15.:33:23.

Just watching Ross Ross, he has gone third fastest. Hamilton fifth

:33:24.:33:28.

fastest. We'll just ride with him for a moment. This is turn six. He's

:33:29.:33:35.

not flat out by my means at this stage. Quick right-hand turn at turn

:33:36.:33:42.

seven. Turn eight. Then a little short straight down towards turn

:33:43.:33:46.

nine. Hard on the brakes here and it is an uphill exit as well. Important

:33:47.:33:48.

to get the traction out of this corner. Just lifting up slightly.

:33:49.:33:52.

And then over the crest and over this tricky little right-hander,

:33:53.:33:56.

turn 11. Again it's important to get out of this corner quickly. And then

:33:57.:34:00.

down through the fast shi chain, turns 12 and 13. As you can see,

:34:01.:34:04.

he's taking things relatively steady at this point. We were talking about

:34:05.:34:08.

Romain Grosjean. We've seen him head back towards the pit. We think it's

:34:09.:34:13.

a battery problem, in fact. That's an interesting one. The energy

:34:14.:34:17.

recovery controller storage system, the battery system. We did catch up

:34:18.:34:23.

with Romain Grosjean yesterday. Tom Clarkson caught up with him and

:34:24.:34:25.

asked him if there were any positives that actually did come out

:34:26.:34:31.

of Australia. I think there's always positive issues. Once you look at

:34:32.:34:36.

it, on Sunday, of course, that's not the way we would like to think about

:34:37.:34:42.

the race, but that's the way we did. And, learn, yeah, we had some more

:34:43.:34:47.

work to do. We had some work to do on the brakes and the car is a bit

:34:48.:34:56.

different. So we want to work and I'm very hopeful that Renault have

:34:57.:34:59.

has done a bit of work and we have done a lot. Of course, nothing is

:35:00.:35:03.

going to be perfect. But if it can be better than it was last time, we

:35:04.:35:07.

can move from there, improve and get to a good level of performance.

:35:08.:35:13.

Well, we've just seen Adrian Sutil have a spin coming into the pit lane

:35:14.:35:17.

entrance. That's a bit of an unusual one, Alex. Yes, you'd have to hope

:35:18.:35:22.

that was possibly a brake by wire issue rather than driver error.

:35:23.:35:28.

That's rare to see --rare to see, especially in a practice session.

:35:29.:35:32.

Let's explain this. What do we mean by break by wire -- brake by wire?

:35:33.:35:37.

Because of the energy recovery systems and how active the car needs

:35:38.:35:41.

to be with harvesting energy on the brakes, there's a brake balance

:35:42.:35:44.

shift that is quite extreme. It always was the case with just

:35:45.:35:47.

standard curves we've had the past couple of years. But that was

:35:48.:35:52.

something you were able to kind of compensate with the driver and there

:35:53.:35:59.

was a quick shift lever that you could adjust the brake. But this

:36:00.:36:06.

year with the shifts being so big, it's kind of impossible for the

:36:07.:36:10.

drivers to change the brakes as much as they would need to for a corner.

:36:11.:36:14.

What they have had to do is make the rare brakes kind of work in a system

:36:15.:36:17.

that is talking to the harvesting unit. And so the font brakes --

:36:18.:36:23.

front brakes work as normal. When you press the paddle, you're

:36:24.:36:27.

controlling the front brakes as you would. But it's an electronic

:36:28.:36:31.

rare-braking system. If you don't get that working correctly, it can

:36:32.:36:34.

cause a lot of issue because the drivers don't get the feel of the

:36:35.:36:37.

deceleration or the feel of the pedal they've had in the past. It

:36:38.:36:41.

has caused some issues. But as each day goes by, teams are getting more

:36:42.:36:47.

and more accustomed to it. In fact, it cause adden issue for Kamui wi in

:36:48.:36:51.

Melbourne. Initial he thought it was his err or but it turned out to be

:36:52.:36:58.

the system? Exactly. Because it was the second install lap. When he took

:36:59.:37:03.

the start, basically the rare brakes were shut off. So when we went to

:37:04.:37:10.

hit the pedal, he didn't have the deceleration in the rear and he had

:37:11.:37:16.

to use the brakes. It was very much not his fault and a very unfortunate

:37:17.:37:27.

way to start the season. Just watching the development driver for

:37:28.:37:30.

Lotus. While we have a little bit of a pause, we've been through the

:37:31.:37:33.

first half hour. So teams have used that extra set of tyres that they

:37:34.:37:41.

get to use for the first 30 minutes of FP1. Now there will be a little

:37:42.:37:46.

bit of a pause. Let's catch only. Some of -- some of the comments the

:37:47.:37:52.

drivers made yesterday. We see there is a different front wing on the

:37:53.:37:58.

McLaren, a different nose section as well. Ron Dennis is talking about a

:37:59.:38:04.

half second improvement here at Sepang. If that translates, do you

:38:05.:38:08.

think that will allow you to compete with Mercedes? No. They're at least

:38:09.:38:12.

a second quicker than us. I hope we get a second out of the car this

:38:13.:38:18.

weekend, but I doubt it around here. It's a very difficult section in

:38:19.:38:21.

termings of high speed. We're not quite there on high speed yet. So I

:38:22.:38:24.

don't think it will be that much. But maybe at the circuits that have

:38:25.:38:29.

less high-speed corners, we could find a good chunk. But anything is

:38:30.:38:33.

good right now. It is only two weeks after the last race and if we can

:38:34.:38:36.

keep bringing improvements every Grand Prix, that's the only way

:38:37.:38:39.

we're going to get close to Mercedes. So Jenson Button hoping

:38:40.:38:44.

for good things, but whether they're going to be able to actually do some

:38:45.:38:47.

damage to what Mercedes have come up with in terms of that performance

:38:48.:38:51.

package, we'll have to wait and see, Tony. I think they'll be

:38:52.:38:55.

well-chuffed with half a second race. I think anybody would.

:38:56.:39:00.

Generally they operate on a prinsof a tenth a race. That's their target.

:39:01.:39:03.

So half a second, if it really is half a second, that's a good step.

:39:04.:39:09.

Thanks for your views coming in using the hashtag BBF1 or the BBC

:39:10.:39:25.

Facebook. Connor thinks Jenson Button will finish ahead of

:39:26.:39:31.

Magnussen. Alex, you've done Renault 3. 5 and GP3 over the years. How do

:39:32.:39:36.

you see him as a competitor at the moment? And also, which of those

:39:37.:39:40.

formulas, how different are they and which one is better for moving up to

:39:41.:39:46.

Formula One? Right. So I raced with Kevin in 2012 in world series and,

:39:47.:39:52.

you know, obviously, he's a big talent and that was proven last

:39:53.:39:56.

week. I think that attend of the day, GP2 is a slightly better

:39:57.:40:01.

platform just from the standpoint that you're on basically the same

:40:02.:40:11.

power as the F1 cars. Having said that, Kevin did GP2 and he was still

:40:12.:40:15.

quite successful. So I think that both are more than a feeder

:40:16.:40:22.

championship into F1. This guy we're watching on track at the moment,

:40:23.:40:28.

Daniil Kvyat, he didn't come out of either. I guess if you have the pace

:40:29.:40:33.

an you have the talent, then you'll figure it out. That's been proven by

:40:34.:40:42.

the rookies. It seems in the years past people team -- teams have been

:40:43.:40:45.

cautious with who they put in the cars. This year, it's changed a

:40:46.:40:49.

little bit. Hopefully it will change in the future where teams can put

:40:50.:40:52.

the confidence in the young guys. Let's hope so. Allan, I know you

:40:53.:40:56.

wanted to add some comment about what we were talking about with in

:40:57.:40:59.

McLaren? Yes, just the fact that coming from half a second. That was

:41:00.:41:03.

one big development. I don't think they're going to be in a position to

:41:04.:41:06.

do anything like that. The reality is that the comment that I thought

:41:07.:41:11.

was important was when Jenson said they were at least one second ahead

:41:12.:41:14.

when he was talking about Mercedes. Looking at the analysis of the last

:41:15.:41:17.

year, then I would definitely concur with that. Buzz after the safety car

:41:18.:41:21.

when Nico Rosberg had to really go flat out, he had that amount of time

:41:22.:41:26.

in his pocket. Yes, no, it's very interesting. And we'll see how they

:41:27.:41:31.

get on this weekend. Fernando Alonso -- Fernando Alonso just relaxing at

:41:32.:41:35.

the moment. He is fastest in this session but sitting at the back of

:41:36.:41:37.

the Ferrari garage, not planning to come out for a little while,

:41:38.:41:44.

presumably. A very small difference between himself and Magnussen. A 420

:41:45.:41:51.

also for Rosberg. That's the top three. Jenson Button is a little

:41:52.:42:00.

slower. Then Hamilton 42. 6. Daniil Kvyat as we mentioned, very

:42:01.:42:04.

impressive. Of course, Tony, he became the youngest ever

:42:05.:42:07.

point-scorer in Formula One as a result of his performance in

:42:08.:42:11.

Melbourne. Of course, nowadays, we do pay points down to tenth, so you

:42:12.:42:16.

can't necessarily compare that all through history of Formula One,

:42:17.:42:19.

because for many years you only got points down to six. But it was still

:42:20.:42:25.

impressive? It was still an impressive performance. The key

:42:26.:42:28.

thing with him, every time he got into the car, it almostic loos like

:42:29.:42:34.

he was born into it. There was no learning phase. He was on it

:42:35.:42:40.

straightaway. I just think it's been a great start for him. We've had two

:42:41.:42:45.

cars in the top 10 as well. He is born of this new generation of

:42:46.:42:51.

drivers. You have to look at him in the same light as Magnussen, Bottas.

:42:52.:43:01.

Kift Daniil Kvyat, very, very impressive. Melbourne he'd never

:43:02.:43:06.

been to before, but this is a track that Daniil Kvyat has raced at in

:43:07.:43:10.

the past. Yes, I think we can anticipate another good, strong

:43:11.:43:14.

performance from him. Tom Clarkson actually caught up with him

:43:15.:43:18.

yesterday. Let's see what he had to say about coming to Malaysia. Just

:43:19.:43:24.

talk us through this coming weekend and whether - have you raced here

:43:25.:43:28.

before? What are your expectations? The last time I've been here was

:43:29.:43:34.

four years ago an it was also very, very hot. So I won my first ever

:43:35.:43:39.

race in single-seaters here so it is quite a particular track for me,

:43:40.:43:43.

happy memories. While it is a bit different to Formula One, so we have

:43:44.:43:48.

to do a job from zero now obviously and try to learn as much as we can

:43:49.:43:52.

during the pre-practice. Do you think the car will be competitive

:43:53.:43:57.

here? I hope so, definitely. We've been doing good step forwards all

:43:58.:44:00.

the time, every time we're on the track. I think this time we also

:44:01.:44:05.

have a chance to do good step forward. There's Romain Grosjean

:44:06.:44:09.

just explaining, presumably, what stopped on the car, while everybody

:44:10.:44:12.

trying to work out what happened. Let's get back down to the pit lane.

:44:13.:44:16.

Allan, I think you're at Mercedes now? Yes, I am. They're changing the

:44:17.:44:21.

enjoin cover. This new enjoin cover is much wider at the rear. Basically

:44:22.:44:26.

that is for extra cooling, trying to evacuate that hot air to go out the

:44:27.:44:30.

back of the car. At the moment, they're just putting the camera

:44:31.:44:35.

position on in both. So they've done a back-to-back in this session with

:44:36.:44:40.

both the cars, side by side. If you look right underneath where all the

:44:41.:44:43.

engineers have sat on the pit wall, underneath they've put a little bit

:44:44.:44:47.

of dry ice on there, just to keep them a little bit cooler. What about

:44:48.:44:52.

the driver? Allan, you've raced in many, many hot places around the

:44:53.:44:56.

world, all sorts of areas of the world through Formula One and

:44:57.:44:58.

through sports car racing. How does this rate from your point of view?

:44:59.:45:02.

This is one of the worst, I have to say. It's not the temperature. I'm

:45:03.:45:07.

Scottish, so therefore, we're not extreme -- exactly acclimatised to

:45:08.:45:11.

heat from birth. But it's the humidity. You just can't get rid of

:45:12.:45:16.

it. When you have your helmet on, everything else, you only have a

:45:17.:45:20.

small area that can sweat that can actually get rid of that

:45:21.:45:22.

temperature. So you feel like you're boiling from the inside. I remember

:45:23.:45:25.

the last time when I was here to race, I just got out the car and I

:45:26.:45:29.

just wanted to pass out. It was the worst #2350e8ing -- feeling I've

:45:30.:45:33.

had. But, ultimately, the adrenaline keeps you going. It was interesting

:45:34.:45:37.

to note what you said earlier on, about the McLaren, putting a little

:45:38.:45:40.

bit of claf pseudoephedrine in there. It is allowed but you don't

:45:41.:45:44.

want to have too much. Fair enough. Readk some of your comments - thank

:45:45.:45:49.

you for getting there touch with us - a couple more questions an

:45:50.:45:54.

comments." Do you think a double points race is positive in a season

:45:55.:45:58.

where many teams are lernling a new car?" I think many people are

:45:59.:46:01.

feeling doesn't points last race isn't positive from any point of

:46:02.:46:04.

view. Although there are some people who do like the idea and perhaps

:46:05.:46:07.

think that it will add some spice to the enof the season. We'll have to

:46:08.:46:12.

wait and see. Mark Hill saying, "Who do you think will win this weekend?

:46:13.:46:19.

Skwots what do you reckon, Tony? I can't see past Mercedes on this one.

:46:20.:46:24.

I have a feeling it might be Lewis. Lewis looked very confident in his

:46:25.:46:28.

press hearing yesterday. Felipe Massa on screen at the moment, who

:46:29.:46:35.

was so unfortunate to be taken out by Kamui Kobayashi. Do you know if

:46:36.:46:41.

Kamui wi has spoken to Felipe after that race. Because Felipe was very

:46:42.:46:46.

upset. Yes, as you understand he would be. But he understands these

:46:47.:46:50.

are now consider r cars and it is something you have to deal with.

:46:51.:46:56.

They were quite good friends before and I think remain to be. Bottas --

:46:57.:47:11.

Bottas is currently 10th fastest. We only have one car on track at the

:47:12.:47:15.

moment. The question is really how good is that Williams car. That's

:47:16.:47:21.

something that Tom asked Bottas yesterday afternoon. Having seen the

:47:22.:47:27.

potential of your rifles now, do you think the FW36 is a race winner? Not

:47:28.:47:38.

yet. . I think Mercedes is too strong, too quick. It is a different

:47:39.:47:42.

kind of circuit, but I think they are still the main team to beat. We

:47:43.:47:46.

meet to keep pushing. But also from the back there are many other teams

:47:47.:47:50.

getting better and better. So we need to keep getting better as well.

:47:51.:47:54.

How do you race your chances this weekend, because Williams have

:47:55.:47:58.

always been very strong here at Sepang? Last year I had one of my

:47:59.:48:02.

better results. I was 11th with a car from last year. Of course, car

:48:03.:48:07.

is zimpbt, but at the moment the feeling is it should be a - I mean,

:48:08.:48:12.

at least, as good as Melbourne. So, yeah, it's going to be an exciting

:48:13.:48:18.

weekend. Hopefully can get another improvement of my so far best result

:48:19.:48:27.

of my career. Bottas there hoping for many, and hoping for a podium

:48:28.:48:40.

finish this weekend. By finishing in fifth, Bottas has already doubled

:48:41.:48:43.

the score that they managed to score throughout the whole offer the 2013

:48:44.:48:47.

season, which seems remarkable, but that's how poor their 2013 season

:48:48.:48:50.

was. Everyone hoping that Williams will have a stronger time this year.

:48:51.:48:55.

A few more of your comments and where you're watching or listening

:48:56.:49:07.

to us for this first practice." Watching in bed for the weekend,

:49:08.:49:12.

with a possible broken toe." And great to have all your comments from

:49:13.:49:18.

wherever you are. In fact, Andrew Hooper in Perth in Australia saying

:49:19.:49:25.

he remembers the turbos of Renault in the BMW era but no-one complained

:49:26.:49:29.

about the noise then. But the noise is different then. It is not the

:49:30.:49:36.

same No, it isn't. We were a lot gruntier, deeper, more violent

:49:37.:49:42.

altogether. I think that's something to to with the periods where you had

:49:43.:49:49.

1500 hrp at one stage. Different kinds of engines altogether. Allan

:49:50.:49:54.

is now at Sauber. What can you see there, Allan? We have a fantastic

:49:55.:49:58.

view of the steering wheel. You can see the complexity of it. Now, we've

:49:59.:50:02.

heard that the drivers are having -- drivers are having to work a

:50:03.:50:07.

tremendous amount more with all of the switches and knobs on there to

:50:08.:50:15.

maximise getting the time. You will hear the SOC or state of charge and

:50:16.:50:18.

that's how the hybrid system, which we have to remember has got 10 times

:50:19.:50:23.

the emergency capacity of last year, and double the horsepower boost, so

:50:24.:50:28.

it is a significantly more important part of the performance. But each

:50:29.:50:33.

steering wheel is designed perfectly for each individual driver. They get

:50:34.:50:36.

the buttons exactly where they want and they have to know just it

:50:37.:50:42.

absolutely blind, like you do with your computer keyboard. It is a

:50:43.:50:50.

complicated-looking piece of kit. Alexander Rossi with us. Did you

:50:51.:50:53.

have a hand in discussing with what does go on the steering wheel of the

:50:54.:50:58.

car? Yes, absolutely. I think all four drivers sit down and have an

:50:59.:51:02.

input a little bit into what they're doing. Marcus obviously has the main

:51:03.:51:08.

input because they're the ones hopefully driving every race this

:51:09.:51:13.

year. But as Allan said, every driver has different needs, some

:51:14.:51:18.

prefer rotorries and some prefer the thumb wheels. It is all personal

:51:19.:51:27.

preference. We see a replay there, the car moving around a lot again,

:51:28.:51:32.

we see with the Italians, nice to see an F1 car being a bit of a

:51:33.:51:38.

handful, just watch from the onboard here. Had just been on one of the

:51:39.:51:42.

buttons on the steering wheel just before that little slide. But is it

:51:43.:51:46.

a more complicated environment now as a driver? Yes, and no, I think

:51:47.:51:51.

there's parts of it that you don't do as much in terms of - you don't -

:51:52.:52:01.

it's all automatic thing. So you're not waiting to get to the corner and

:52:02.:52:05.

pushing the button every point. From that responsibilitipoint it's

:52:06.:52:07.

easier, but on the straights it's quite a bit easier, but a lot of the

:52:08.:52:11.

information or a lot of the things you're changing, you prediscuss, so

:52:12.:52:15.

it's not you're doing it as a reaction, you're doing baiz you know

:52:16.:52:18.

you have to do it at this point at every lap. So what are you changing

:52:19.:52:23.

on the straights? In the previous era, you would have been changing

:52:24.:52:28.

break balance with that manual brake balance change, but what kind of

:52:29.:52:33.

things are you changing now. It's still changing the brake balance,

:52:34.:52:38.

but it's more how the brake by wire technology is working. State of

:52:39.:52:42.

charge is another thing. And then the cooldown laps or slowdown laps

:52:43.:52:47.

are much busier, you have what's called sustainable energy which you

:52:48.:52:50.

can run all the time and then you have un sustainable energy which you

:52:51.:52:55.

use for your performance laps. That's about a three settle change

:52:56.:53:00.

-- setting change that you're going from a slowdown lap to a cooldown

:53:01.:53:03.

lap. In terms of the actual race laps and the qualifying laps it's

:53:04.:53:09.

very similar. We're watching Kevin Magnussen once again. Fernando

:53:10.:53:12.

Alonso is fastest from Magnussen second. Rosberg is third, Vergne

:53:13.:53:20.

fourth, Button fifth, then Hamilton, Gutierrez 8th, followed by Bottas,

:53:21.:53:24.

Raikkonen is down in 12 at the moment ahead of Massa. Bianchi 14th,

:53:25.:53:31.

Ericsson, Chilton, no times yet established for Perez in the forz

:53:32.:53:37.

India, nor for the Lotus of Maldonado and Grosjean. We know

:53:38.:53:43.

Grosjean is out of this. There's a good lap from Ross sow, but the

:53:44.:53:49.

others who have not set a lap time are yet the two Red Bulls, Daniel

:53:50.:53:53.

Ricciardo but Sebastian Vettel, but Daniel Ricciardo has just gone out

:53:54.:53:56.

on circuit, so we may see some flying laps from Daniel Ricciardo.

:53:57.:54:01.

The man who was excluded last time, the brilliant second place on the

:54:02.:54:05.

road. And Tom asked him yesterday how did he react to the news of his

:54:06.:54:10.

disqualification? Oom, my God. Bliemy, strewth.

:54:11.:54:19.

Crikey. It was - not one of those things too good to be true, but it

:54:20.:54:24.

was - yeah. A bit of a bummer. I was like, does this really have to

:54:25.:54:27.

happen now? Obviously such a high from the weekend, everything worked,

:54:28.:54:31.

you know, nearly perfectly qualifying in the race, you know, I

:54:32.:54:34.

don't think we're ever going to touch the Mercedes. I think we did

:54:35.:54:38.

the best we could and then that was - it was a bit of a Downer, but, at

:54:39.:54:42.

the same time, I was just happy that I put in a good weekend. I put in

:54:43.:54:47.

the quality and a race, the front row start was - was already, wasn't

:54:48.:54:52.

the best get-away off the line, but I recovered that in turn one, and I

:54:53.:54:57.

did all I could. In any case I was still pleased with the results. Just

:54:58.:55:02.

watching a replay of Jean-Eric Vergne, that little lockup down at

:55:03.:55:06.

nine, but Daniel Ricciardo was a great performance from him and he'll

:55:07.:55:09.

be hoping to try to repeat it here in Malaysia. Let's quickly get back

:55:10.:55:14.

to the pits because Lee is with test and development driver, we saw him

:55:15.:55:20.

on the screen a few moments ago for Williams, Felipe Massa. Yes, Filipe,

:55:21.:55:26.

this is much more Brazilian, what is going on in your car. The

:55:27.:55:32.

temperature is so hot. We see Felipe Massa putting his helmet on. It's

:55:33.:55:36.

really warm. I have to say, more than in my country, but, you know, I

:55:37.:55:42.

mean, few changes, I think they're going for a second run now, and just

:55:43.:55:48.

comparing the two cars. They have - they're trying different things in

:55:49.:55:53.

both cars. So we'll see. But, you know, naturally the heat is going to

:55:54.:56:00.

be the main thing in Malaysia, of tyre degradation. I'm sure there are

:56:01.:56:04.

things looking to minimise the loss on that. So we'll see. But so far

:56:05.:56:10.

been pretty good for us. How is your role going with the Williams F1

:56:11.:56:15.

team. It's going really well for me. With such a big opportunity to step

:56:16.:56:21.

up in my career and to experience this new world in in Formula One,

:56:22.:56:26.

everything is new for me, and I'm learning as much as I can, and I'm

:56:27.:56:30.

really looking forward to the - to the times that I'll be in the car.

:56:31.:56:36.

So which will be next week in Bahrain. OK, hope it goes great.

:56:37.:56:40.

He's going to have an opportunity in first practice in Bahrain, that's

:56:41.:56:45.

good to hear. And Felipe Massa will be racing against... He is doing GP2

:56:46.:56:50.

again this year? Yes, correct. He's going to have a busy weekend that

:56:51.:56:54.

one. What about yourself, any chances you're going to see you out

:56:55.:56:58.

in any of the practice sessions that we know about? To be honest, I don't

:56:59.:57:02.

know. It's a race by race situation, and to be honest, the main focus is

:57:03.:57:09.

definitely GP2 this year. Fair enough. OK. We'll just hearing this

:57:10.:57:16.

Max Chilton has got an electrical problem. He's not doing much

:57:17.:57:20.

running. He has done eight laps so far in this session, currently 17th

:57:21.:57:26.

fastest as we watch Sebastian Vettel and just seeing also we have that

:57:27.:57:33.

spinner earlier. Yeah, that was Marcus Ericsson who had the spin as

:57:34.:57:36.

well earlier. But otherwise no other problems. So Magnussen, he's now

:57:37.:57:41.

fastest in this session. He's gone ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. 41. 2,

:57:42.:57:46.

and there's Kimi Raikkonen just having a little bit of a slide as

:57:47.:57:51.

well. Getting out of shape. Kimi was talking yesterday - let's see what

:57:52.:57:55.

happened to Marcus Ericsson. This was down the last corner. Lost the

:57:56.:58:00.

left front and around came the back. Again, is that something perhaps the

:58:01.:58:03.

brake wire bar not giving him what he needs there? Potentially. That

:58:04.:58:08.

back corner has always been quite prone to the inside wheel lockups in

:58:09.:58:13.

the past. You'd imagine that it is something to to do with the bricking

:58:14.:58:16.

system. Do you think that's the new favourite excuse of all racing

:58:17.:58:19.

drivers in Formula One? Yes, definitely, provides a good one,

:58:20.:58:24.

doesn't it? And - but to be fair, I mean most of the issues have been

:58:25.:58:30.

caused by that. And still early days as you say. Kimi Raikkonen had a bit

:58:31.:58:34.

of a tough time in Melbourne. Certainly was a little bit off the

:58:35.:58:38.

pace of Fernando Alonso generally through practice hand in the race

:58:39.:58:43.

itself. And clearly wants to see a few differences on the car. He was

:58:44.:58:46.

talking yesterday about the fact that the car is not quite giving him

:58:47.:58:50.

what he wants or needs. And that's something that he's looking for some

:58:51.:58:56.

new parts to be delivered on that score. Right now, he's on track. So

:58:57.:58:59.

let's just watch the remainder of this lap. Listen in to the radio as

:59:00.:59:03.

well: Lots of cars looking like they're struggling with rear-end

:59:04.:59:08.

grip. That's actually to Lewis Hamilton. So, yes, plenty of cars

:59:09.:59:13.

perhaps struggling with traction off the rear of the cars. Kimi Raikkonen

:59:14.:59:18.

now turn 9, looking a - looking piecemeal through the corner, isn't

:59:19.:59:23.

it, Tony? It is. I was talking to somebody who was watching the cars

:59:24.:59:29.

in Melbourne, it said it didn't look like Kimi. Alonso was attacking,

:59:30.:59:33.

Kimi didn't have a front bend basically. There was some, you know,

:59:34.:59:37.

some comments I think attributed to him on Ferrari's website, he said

:59:38.:59:41.

yesterday, so it wasn't that, it was basic set up and just hasn't got the

:59:42.:59:45.

car the way he wants it. Tom talked to him yesterday to ask him what he

:59:46.:59:49.

is looking for on that Ferrari. Let's hear what he had to say. What

:59:50.:59:53.

bits of the car are holding you back? Just a feeling. The front bend

:59:54.:00:02.

is a bit tricky. So we'll see. It's the big way of driving around the

:00:03.:00:09.

corner. Hopefully once we get the new - after a few races, we are in a

:00:10.:00:15.

better position. We cannot promise anything, but that's the plan, and

:00:16.:00:20.

that's what I feel will help us. Well, in the meantime, Kevin

:00:21.:00:23.

Magnussen has just stopped at the side of the track, just on the way

:00:24.:00:27.

in to the pit. So hopefully might be able to get him back, but Magnussen

:00:28.:00:34.

just stopping out on track, and let's listen. I lost power. I

:00:35.:00:41.

switched the engine off. He's been given a bit of a shove and just

:00:42.:00:44.

rolling around the edge of the corner into the pit lane at the

:00:45.:00:48.

moment. Let's hope he can make it all the way back they can get to

:00:49.:00:52.

work on it. He's fastest in this session currently, but obviously

:00:53.:00:55.

still little glitches are going to occur. That's something we can

:00:56.:00:58.

expect to see as we go through these next few races before the teams get

:00:59.:01:03.

their heads around how to look after these powerful units and solve all

:01:04.:01:06.

the problems that might occur. Just crawling along at the moment. I

:01:07.:01:09.

think he's trying to wiggle the steering wheel almost to give him

:01:10.:01:14.

some rolling momentum, but it's not happening for him. Magnussen fastest

:01:15.:01:20.

from Vergne, Raikkonen third fastest now. So despite the car looking a

:01:21.:01:26.

little bit of a handful, Raikkonen going third. Alonso third, Rosberg

:01:27.:01:30.

fifth. Magnussen has stopped now. So looks as though few guys are running

:01:31.:01:35.

up to try to give him a push. Some of the Marshalls there will

:01:36.:01:38.

hopefully get him a bit further down the pit lane. Sebastian Vettel, by

:01:39.:01:43.

the way, has now down a timed lap. He's done a 143. 1, but Vettel is

:01:44.:01:49.

currently 13th fastest. Let's go back down to the pits at Force

:01:50.:01:53.

India. Thanks. I was about to say that it's not been a good morning

:01:54.:01:57.

for Force India. They have managed to get Nico Hulkenberg on track, but

:01:58.:02:01.

as you can see, Sergio Perez's car is very much a work-in-progress. The

:02:02.:02:07.

official line is the down time for some checks on the car. Although

:02:08.:02:13.

somebody told me they haven't pinpointed the problem is and won't

:02:14.:02:16.

get back out in the session with Perez per. It looks like a surgical

:02:17.:02:21.

operation going on. Yes, one of the me cans said the fuel tanks -

:02:22.:02:26.

suggests, sorry, one of the mechanics has got one of his hands

:02:27.:02:29.

inside the fuel tank, to suggests he has got a fuel surge issue. There's

:02:30.:02:34.

a lot of fast corners around here, and the fuel, one side of the tank

:02:35.:02:39.

to the other, he doesn't necessarily pick up all of the time if you do

:02:40.:02:44.

have something. There's two fuel pumps, so therefore they're on the

:02:45.:02:48.

inside to see if it is a visual thing. This does take a long time

:02:49.:02:52.

when you have got, like you say, a surgical mission going on. Yes,

:02:53.:02:58.

Sergio Perez has been - not looking particularly happy. Not wanted to

:02:59.:03:02.

speak to us, put it that way. That's why we haven't got any comments from

:03:03.:03:07.

him. A bit of a hard start for the reason for Sergio Perez, but he did

:03:08.:03:10.

get that final point in the end in Melbourne after the exclusion of

:03:11.:03:14.

Ricciardo, so at least he came away with something. He has got a good

:03:15.:03:18.

finishing record. Go back to the end of 2012 since Perez officially

:03:19.:03:24.

didn't finish a race. Even though silver ston last year he was a

:03:25.:03:30.

nonruner. We're watching Kimi Raikkonen. A bit smoother. Third

:03:31.:03:33.

fastest in this session currently. Yes, he goes fastest. 1 minute 40.

:03:34.:03:40.

8. Good luck for him. We're saying this is a good track for Ferrari

:03:41.:03:44.

historically. I wonder if we're going to see that type of

:03:45.:03:49.

performance. We got a spin on the ner Ferrari. Alonso spinning

:03:50.:03:52.

backwards, that's not a sight you see often. He hasn't stalled the

:03:53.:03:57.

engine, but Fernando Alonso, that's down at turn eight. He's back on

:03:58.:04:00.

track once again. I was about to say, they both have very good

:04:01.:04:04.

records here with Alonso with his three victories, he took his first

:04:05.:04:10.

ever poll position at F1 at this circuit, and interestingly,

:04:11.:04:13.

Raikkonen took his first ever victory at this track. But, Alex,

:04:14.:04:18.

let's see what Alonso did here. Talk me through it a bit. At the air

:04:19.:04:22.

base, he lost the car, possibly a bit too much entry speed, but, you

:04:23.:04:27.

know, I mean, very small error that didn't really seem to cost him that

:04:28.:04:31.

much. He wasn't locked up for too long, the tyres should be OK.

:04:32.:04:38.

Hopefully not the case. A lot less rear downforce on these cars because

:04:39.:04:42.

we have lost the exhaust blowing effect. We have always lost a wing

:04:43.:04:47.

at the rear which was providing a lot of the downforce and does seem

:04:48.:04:50.

to have made quite a big difference, hasn't it? Yes, coupled that with

:04:51.:04:56.

the extra torque, that's on demand basically, makes the rear of the car

:04:57.:05:01.

very tricky, but at the same time, I mean, F1 cars in the past have

:05:02.:05:06.

always developed it in - I think by the middle of the year, that will be

:05:07.:05:13.

settled down quite a lot. Meanwhile, Hamilton has gone fastest, he's on a

:05:14.:05:18.

quicker lap again as we can see from the split times. Rosberg is taking

:05:19.:05:23.

things fairly steady. Watching Lewis Hamilton here, he's on a quick lap.

:05:24.:05:26.

You can see the body of the language, he goes through that 12,

:05:27.:05:31.

13 sequence of the quar. Changes direction nicely. Little bit of tyre

:05:32.:05:35.

smoke, that was interesting. He's pushing quite hard. But it almost

:05:36.:05:39.

seems the level of grip on the track is quite low this morning. You see a

:05:40.:05:45.

lot of break lockup than normal, and I think some of -- some of that

:05:46.:05:49.

comes down to track conditions. Let's see what the lap is going to

:05:50.:05:54.

be. He's gone fastest than anybody in the middle. It's 1. 40. 6. Gains

:05:55.:06:02.

another tenth or two a second. A useful little improvement. Looking

:06:03.:06:06.

back on the session one time from last year, Mark Webber was fastest

:06:07.:06:11.

in session one last year on 1. 36. 9. So we're about four - a little

:06:12.:06:17.

bit under four seconds at this stage. Similar gap to what we saw in

:06:18.:06:20.

Melbourne and was a right front that he lost, yes, going down to turn 14

:06:21.:06:27.

on that lap. And a few more of your comments coming in using the

:06:28.:06:33.

hashtag. Philipa asking, do you think we have to wait for the

:06:34.:06:37.

Spanish Grand Prix before we see a reliable Lotus car? I have to tell

:06:38.:06:41.

you that Grosjean, as we know is out of this session already. And

:06:42.:06:46.

Maldonado has not gone back out. So Tony, she could be right, it might

:06:47.:06:50.

be Spain. They'll probably take that if you offered them Spain. Yes. We

:06:51.:06:54.

certainly like to see them get reliable before that. But who knows.

:06:55.:06:58.

Jason asked: Withless likelihood with a safety car is there likely to

:06:59.:07:01.

be an issue with fuel in Malaysia? Now, Melbourne was one of the

:07:02.:07:05.

toughest on fuel consumption, Malaysia, not quite as tough as some

:07:06.:07:10.

of the other circuits, Alex? Yes, that is true. Fuel consumption isn't

:07:11.:07:15.

going to be a massive worry, the bigger worry is the heat and the

:07:16.:07:20.

amount of time you're at full throttle on this lap when you

:07:21.:07:23.

compare it to Melbourne, it's about 15 to 20% more full tloten usage,

:07:24.:07:28.

with the reliability as it is, it is quite a challenge. Let's get down to

:07:29.:07:33.

the pit lane. Romain Grosjean. Can you tell us what happened? We drain

:07:34.:07:38.

out the battery with a problem on the MUH, I think. We can fully

:07:39.:07:43.

recharge and go for a few laps. Certainly would be. And what's your

:07:44.:07:46.

expectations for this weekend? I know the Lotus team has worked so

:07:47.:07:50.

hard since the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago. We did. So far it's

:07:51.:07:58.

not very successful. Of course, we would like to get points, but first

:07:59.:08:04.

we have to access where -- assess where our car is and how we run it.

:08:05.:08:09.

Do you think the chassis is a good chassis, but the technical problems

:08:10.:08:14.

are holding you back. We never get manage to have a good place to see

:08:15.:08:19.

how the tyres are behaving, but I'm hoping yes. I hope sow, Romain.

:08:20.:08:29.

Thanks, Alan, Nico Hulkenberg heading into the pit.. Hulkenberg

:08:30.:08:35.

also had a bit of lockup as you can see down in turn 9, again in the a

:08:36.:08:40.

major factor. We see the onboard view, the left front locking, with

:08:41.:08:44.

the orange side wall markings. We'll see the medium tyre come out later

:08:45.:08:47.

on today. That will be shown in the second practice session. We'll get a

:08:48.:08:52.

little bit more of a comparison between the two different tyre types

:08:53.:08:55.

and the idea of the lap time difference between them. Probably

:08:56.:08:59.

over a second, we'll have so see how they stand up to the treatment

:09:00.:09:05.

around here as well on this abrasive surface in these high temperatures.

:09:06.:09:08.

Thanks for your comments. We have been discussing the new look and the

:09:09.:09:12.

sound of F1 this season. Daniel saying: I think the 2014 season will

:09:13.:09:15.

get more and more interesting as teams become better adjusted to

:09:16.:09:19.

their cars. I think you're right there, Daniel. Teams like Lotus, of

:09:20.:09:23.

course they will be showing their form once they get some reliability.

:09:24.:09:27.

Going to be interesting to see how that having the order settles down

:09:28.:09:32.

the next couple of races. Neil comments also: Early stages for the

:09:33.:09:37.

new F1 guys, give them a chance. Let's go Mercedes. He likes the fact

:09:38.:09:41.

that it's been shuffled up, Tony. I think that's the key point. It gets

:09:42.:09:47.

not deedus but when you got same old story for four years, you bring in

:09:48.:09:52.

new rules, it's what F1 should be about you do change the order up,

:09:53.:09:56.

and it's interesting, isn't it, when you have got Vettel on the back foot

:09:57.:10:02.

a little bit. It's a good story. And Mercedes have also done a fantastic

:10:03.:10:05.

job over the winter, and they deserve to be having the success we

:10:06.:10:12.

saw in Australia. Just mentioning Vettel as you said, he is currently

:10:13.:10:16.

7th fastest, been a bit of an improvement in this session from

:10:17.:10:20.

him. So that will give him a bit of confidence. Ricciardo is currently

:10:21.:10:24.

11th. Yes, going back to the sound issue, I think we also got to

:10:25.:10:28.

remember comparing with the 80s turbos, we're actually recovering

:10:29.:10:32.

energy now, not throwing all the energy out of the exhaust. So not

:10:33.:10:38.

going to sound as loud. Felipe Massa, that's the same area that

:10:39.:10:42.

Alonso went. Yes. Just watch it on the onboard now. Got a quick turn-in

:10:43.:10:50.

here. A bit wide. So, it came, I think, a bit late on turning. Again

:10:51.:10:57.

he recovers it well. The engine doesn't stall, and he manages to

:10:58.:11:01.

continue around the lap. So both Bottas and Massa are currently on

:11:02.:11:05.

circuit. Jim, you have been tell it is us how you have been following

:11:06.:11:08.

practice this morning. Are you managing to stay awake if you're in

:11:09.:11:12.

the UK. Rachel says she's on the Sofia with a cup of tea. Gary says

:11:13.:11:19.

he's in the US catching up on the web listening to us during this

:11:20.:11:23.

session. Sorry, just trying to pick up the - what he was saying here. He

:11:24.:11:29.

says he's listening to America's -- American's driving around in

:11:30.:11:33.

circles, worst than turbo noise, he says. We have got Americans here.

:11:34.:11:37.

Gary, I'm glad you're listening to. Zach Des: F1 time after a week of

:11:38.:11:42.

exams, he says it's nice to relax. March rare says, making finish

:11:43.:11:47.

course work more bearable. James: Watching while finishing an essay

:11:48.:11:52.

off. Bottas just finishing his lap. He's still 10th fastest there. Craig

:11:53.:11:57.

watching from Scotland, near 3am, lecture for university at 9am, do

:11:58.:12:01.

you think they'll allow Formula One and an absence -- as an absence

:12:02.:12:06.

excuse. I'll have to go to Alan for the question. It's a university of

:12:07.:12:11.

Scotland, is he going to get away with it? I didn't hear you there. I

:12:12.:12:17.

was listening to a McLaren coming blasting in. And the V6 deafened out

:12:18.:12:23.

our voice. It's Craig from Scotland saying whether he'll get away with

:12:24.:12:28.

F1 for an excuse for missing his lecture at university. I got away

:12:29.:12:33.

from a lot of secondary college doing the same thing. Didn't do you

:12:34.:12:38.

any harm, did it? Our reigning world endurance cham there. Reporting from

:12:39.:12:48.

the pit lane says. Now, Kevin Magnussen's car did make it back to

:12:49.:12:56.

the pits. We saw that a little while ago. For some reason it was limping,

:12:57.:13:01.

but they did get it back. Magnussen's point of view, he will

:13:02.:13:04.

be coming back out in the remaining part of this session. Only 22

:13:05.:13:07.

minutes to go. Seems to be rushing buy this first 90 minutes here in

:13:08.:13:11.

Malaysia. We're watching Jules Bianchi on circuit, he's currently

:13:12.:13:17.

16th fastest. He's done a 17. 44. 3. What about the usual battle between

:13:18.:13:28.

March rue sha or Caterham. March rue sha -- March rush sha

:13:29.:13:32.

Kamui Kobayashi is in trouble. Yes, I know they had an issue with the

:13:33.:13:38.

car and had to take the floor off. He'll be out. That's a great shame

:13:39.:13:42.

to here. So again this - it's chesting isn't it, Lotus and

:13:43.:13:46.

Caterham seems to be going through a tough time. Yet Caterham testing,

:13:47.:13:52.

certainly I -- Caterham got more miles from Renault than anybody else

:13:53.:13:55.

on that particular test. Absolutely, I think it's just - a new problems

:13:56.:13:59.

cropping up. They're not having the same issues. So many different

:14:00.:14:03.

things going on, if you think there's 500 potential problems you

:14:04.:14:07.

can have, there's all 510 and they're just discovering those 10, I

:14:08.:14:16.

think. A hard start for the season for Caterham. Maldonado has gone

:14:17.:14:23.

out. Ferrari in the pit lane. Hamilton is now fastest for

:14:24.:14:27.

Mercedes. Ferrari though up there of Raikkonen in second. Rosberg for

:14:28.:14:31.

Mercedes in third, Button and Magnussen for McLaren fourth and

:14:32.:14:37.

fifth. So it's Mercedes versus Ferrari. The first of the Renault

:14:38.:14:41.

power units is actually Vergne, in sixth ahead of Vettel. So tore

:14:42.:14:50.

re-Ross sow ahead of Red Bull. Daniil out in 14th. Rosso with the

:14:51.:15:00.

Renault power unit. Ninth for Hulkenberg. And we have to keep

:15:01.:15:04.

reminding ourselves that Williams with Mercedes power this a year,

:15:05.:15:09.

they switched again from Renault, and Williams, speaking of that,

:15:10.:15:12.

since Melbourne, something they really looked at and studied in

:15:13.:15:17.

detail. Looked at both what engine manufacturers were likely to provide

:15:18.:15:20.

and made the decision to go to Mercedes. Certainly seems to be a

:15:21.:15:24.

good decision. Maldonado on circuit going quite slowly. This unique twin

:15:25.:15:30.

tusk approach to the new regulations regarding the nose cone of the front

:15:31.:15:36.

wing set up. Different look to the Lotus. But as Romain Grosjean was

:15:37.:15:41.

telling Alan, we haven't really had a chance to see how this car can

:15:42.:15:44.

perform. There's smoke out of the back of it. He's going slowly. A

:15:45.:15:49.

puff of smoke there and things don't look great, do they? No, not at all.

:15:50.:15:55.

No. It's quite ta bit of smoke now. Yeah. Trying to get that back to pit

:15:56.:16:01.

lane. I hope that's not an issue on the engine. Well, you have to say

:16:02.:16:06.

that is looking very worrying. That looks like an oil - or ring failure,

:16:07.:16:12.

like an old-fashioned engine failure. Very much a blue tinge to

:16:13.:16:17.

the smoke, isn't it? That's not a good sign. He's limping along, and

:16:18.:16:25.

he's puffing. And is not good. Not a good look at all with blue smoke

:16:26.:16:29.

coming out of the back of the Lotus. Let's listen. Stop the car, stop the

:16:30.:16:36.

car. Stop the car, please. Switch off. Oh dear, oh dear. I don't this

:16:37.:16:41.

the Lotus boys are going to get much sleep again. Grosjean stopping

:16:42.:16:45.

earlier, although he did say to Alan he might get back out, but that

:16:46.:16:49.

looks much more worrying. Might be a turbo problem, or certainly looks

:16:50.:16:54.

more of the mechanical problem than an ERS or NGUH problem. Yes,

:16:55.:16:59.

definitely. Well, Tony, it looks like more... Like you said more

:17:00.:17:03.

overnight work for those guys. They didn't have a happy time in

:17:04.:17:06.

Melbourne. One time they left the circuit 6am. Got back to the hotel

:17:07.:17:14.

and then the two seat er got back out. Not good. Trickling into the

:17:15.:17:17.

pit lane at the moment. Pastor Maldonado who moved from Williams to

:17:18.:17:22.

Lotus over the offseason of course, and I wonder what he's thinking

:17:23.:17:26.

about that right now. Like the different performances from the two.

:17:27.:17:30.

We saw Kevin Magnussen stop a little bit - a little while ago. And

:17:31.:17:34.

obviously had some sort of problem. Let's see if we can find tout more.

:17:35.:17:38.

Lee is with Jonathan Neil. I heard the technical term was that Kevin's

:17:39.:17:45.

car went into lump home move. It's not the best description. These cars

:17:46.:17:50.

are - have a number of safety features on and complex things to

:17:51.:17:54.

protect the engine if something goes on. We had a sense that the back of

:17:55.:17:59.

the car was getting hot and it triggered a mode that powered down

:18:00.:18:04.

the engine. It's not a major problem for us. Kevin thought he could coast

:18:05.:18:07.

into the pit lane and judged that wrong. We stopped about how many

:18:08.:18:11.

feet short of the entry. So we did the walk of shame to recover the

:18:12.:18:17.

car. It's fine. Carry on the rest of the morning. I think it's very early

:18:18.:18:21.

to tell. I mean, humidity has dropped. Temperature has dropped.

:18:22.:18:24.

This weekend is a big test for us all. Up and down the pit lane. In

:18:25.:18:30.

particular for cooling of these engines, it's going to get this

:18:31.:18:33.

afternoon. And with these turbo-charged engines, we have to be

:18:34.:18:37.

careful about inducing a knock in the engine. They get hot. So it's

:18:38.:18:43.

too early to say that we're comfortable. We'll see thimp. Long

:18:44.:18:46.

days here for the guys working so hard, and Lotus is having problems

:18:47.:18:49.

with both cars. Probably going to be a long night for them. How much - we

:18:50.:18:53.

always focus on the drivers, bru these guys in the team, the garage

:18:54.:18:57.

is so hot. It is, but I think for the last two or three years now,

:18:58.:19:02.

there has been a real effort in the pain lane. Being kind, shall we say,

:19:03.:19:06.

to the mechanics, maybe five years ago. If you look at the general

:19:07.:19:12.

level of attention to hydration, pos chur, manual handling, all that kind

:19:13.:19:16.

of stuff. Just the body mass index of the pit lane has changed

:19:17.:19:20.

enormously in five years. So it's - they have to be athletic, to do pit

:19:21.:19:25.

stops in the kind of times they're doing, everyone has to be fit, awake

:19:26.:19:29.

and alert. But it's demanding, but there are worst things to do in

:19:30.:19:32.

life. So there's no moaning from anybody behind me. Very hot at the

:19:33.:19:35.

moment. We normally have these conversations when it's pouring in

:19:36.:19:41.

rain. Normally you stop me when the wheels has gone off, so it makes a

:19:42.:19:46.

change talking to you when things are going reasonably well. Jonathan

:19:47.:19:50.

Neil, good to see him here. A lot of his work been based back at the

:19:51.:19:55.

factory as well. But he was in chatting away with Eric earlier. I

:19:56.:20:00.

saw, Tony, it's interesting - this new management structure at the top

:20:01.:20:04.

of McLaren, Jonathon Neil and Eric very much a part of that. There

:20:05.:20:08.

might be somebody else who comes this to take that role from

:20:09.:20:11.

Jonathan. That's something they announced and has been quite a lot

:20:12.:20:15.

of speculation who that might be. Obviously Ross, one of the names

:20:16.:20:19.

mentioned, for the moment he says he's quite happy on a boat with his

:20:20.:20:23.

fishing rod. But have to see what happens. There is a vacancy there at

:20:24.:20:29.

the high managerial level. I was actually quite surprised when Eric

:20:30.:20:34.

went there because I thought that is kind of McLaren boy deal with

:20:35.:20:39.

things. They deal with things within. That's indicative of them

:20:40.:20:46.

identifying... I really struggle... He struggled to stay on the track, I

:20:47.:20:55.

the think -- I think he said. Struggling then, Daniil Kvyat down

:20:56.:20:59.

to 14th place. He's done a few laps on those tyres of course. He's done

:21:00.:21:03.

some 15 laps. Final quarter of an hour of this first practice session

:21:04.:21:08.

now. Hulkenberg 8th. That's an improvement. Nico Hulkenberg slight

:21:09.:21:11.

improvement in time. 8th fastest. We know there are problems with Sergio

:21:12.:21:15.

Perez, we're in the expecting him to be back out. Lewis Hamilton has come

:21:16.:21:19.

back out on circuit. Currently fastest on 1. 40. 6, fastest than

:21:20.:21:25.

Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, and Nico Rosberg. Fernando Alonso also out on

:21:26.:21:28.

circuit. Let's get a bit of a bearing on the relative performance

:21:29.:21:32.

of these cars. Alonso has done 13 laps so far exactly the same number

:21:33.:21:36.

of laps as Hamilton, but actually Alonso straight back in. Alan, what

:21:37.:21:41.

have you got on Daniil Kvyat. Nothing really on him, but more the

:21:42.:21:46.

case of the comment. His comment when he said that it was undrivable.

:21:47.:21:49.

That usually means that the rear of the car is very unstable and that's

:21:50.:21:53.

a particular picture of this circuit. Because quite a lot of very

:21:54.:21:58.

fast entry car corners and ones that are quite long, and if you're

:21:59.:22:02.

braking and down shifts, for example, the second last corner on

:22:03.:22:05.

the big back straight, the rear and stability, really makes it quite

:22:06.:22:10.

stricte -- tricky and the driver loses confidence. He had a fantastic

:22:11.:22:13.

run in Melbourne, but he's still very young and early in his F1

:22:14.:22:16.

career and confidence is going to be a key thing for him. He'll need to

:22:17.:22:20.

get that rear stablised before the race. Yes, that's right. Beear --

:22:21.:22:25.

we're just looking in the Red Bull garage at the moment. Sebastian

:22:26.:22:28.

Vettel, he's done nine laps in this session. But with only 12.5 minutes

:22:29.:22:33.

to go, I wonder if he's going to come back out again. 12th fastest

:22:34.:22:37.

for Ricciardo, not quite the sort of pace that we were seeing in

:22:38.:22:41.

Melbourne. Might be a bit more of a vugle here for them. Yefr, be

:22:42.:22:45.

interesting to see what happens, because he was sensational as we

:22:46.:22:49.

said earlier, in Melbourne all the way through. And this is probably,

:22:50.:22:55.

you know, a better barometer in terms of performance levels. So be

:22:56.:22:58.

interesting to see what happens. I would expect him to go forward from

:22:59.:23:02.

where they are now. Ricciardo on circuit. We'll keep an eye on him

:23:03.:23:06.

and see if he manages to improve on his current times. He's 12th fastest

:23:07.:23:12.

as I mentioned. Quick note that sue till down -- Sutil town in 13th

:23:13.:23:24.

place. Bianchi still ahead in the ma rush Kobayashi with problems on his

:23:25.:23:28.

car, and Perez also unable to come back out. Maldonado and Grosjean

:23:29.:23:32.

both also with troubles with their cars. Hope they can get them back

:23:33.:23:35.

out for later on for the second practice session. I do hope that

:23:36.:23:39.

many of you will be able to join us, but I'm sure many of you will also

:23:40.:23:43.

have to get some sleep. Ricciardo just done a 145. 231 on that lap. A

:23:44.:23:48.

little slower than his previous best. Few of your final comments

:23:49.:23:55.

that have come in using the hashtag BBC F1. How much sleep, says evan,

:23:56.:23:58.

do the drives get before the race on Saturday night? He says I'm watching

:23:59.:24:03.

on my laptop in bed at the moment. So sleep is very much in the mind.

:24:04.:24:08.

Alex, in terms of preparing for the race, do drivers - it's difficult

:24:09.:24:12.

when you're moving time zones all the time. How do you adapt and do

:24:13.:24:15.

you expect to get a really good full-night sleep before a race? Yes,

:24:16.:24:20.

I think you make sure that that happens, but almost, it's imperative

:24:21.:24:24.

that you don't oversleep, you don't want to wake up in the morning

:24:25.:24:27.

feeling tired. I think most guys around seven to nine hours and

:24:28.:24:31.

anything more than that is a bit too much. You want to get a full night

:24:32.:24:35.

sleep, but don't want to be sleeping for 1 hours, come the right time

:24:36.:24:40.

you'll be a bit groggy still. Alonso back in the pit. Amy says: Boyfriend

:24:41.:24:45.

and I are in bed watching in the UK. She says I miss the old engine

:24:46.:24:50.

sound. Boyfriend loves the new sound. Got a split with one

:24:51.:24:54.

relationship. I went into my local butchers the other day, and I said

:24:55.:24:57.

what do you think. Exactly the Dame - one of them likes it, one of them

:24:58.:25:02.

dislikes it. It's a matter of personal preference. Some people,

:25:03.:25:07.

the noises is the be-all and end-all, other people doesn't

:25:08.:25:10.

matter. I don't think it matters that much. It's the racing that

:25:11.:25:14.

counts, as I said earlier. I agree. If they're overtaking each other and

:25:15.:25:20.

getting some dramatic racing, that's what counts. Raikkonen about to

:25:21.:25:28.

whisle his way out. Watch him out of the pits. No, we don't get to watch

:25:29.:25:32.

the actual practice start. We look at a replay of him on the track a

:25:33.:25:39.

moment ago. And this is one of the superslow-mo cameras here in

:25:40.:25:41.

Malaysia. Get some interesting shots as we get through the second part of

:25:42.:25:45.

practice today. Thomas finally making the comment that he's

:25:46.:25:51.

watching "on my Sofia in Dorset 30 miles from Jenson's home town."

:25:52.:25:56.

Thank you for that Thomas. On the subject of Jenson, we ought to

:25:57.:26:00.

stress we're talking about Kevin Magnussen's debut, and it was, but I

:26:01.:26:05.

think Jenson, his race in Melbourne was affected by that - the key two

:26:06.:26:08.

lap that he didn't get because of the yellow plag and all the way

:26:09.:26:13.

through. That dictated what happened in the race for him. So the jury is

:26:14.:26:24.

out as to whether we should expect Kevin to be here or not. He was a

:26:25.:26:30.

little bit lucky where he was with the safety car was announced, but he

:26:31.:26:34.

had the awareness and so did the team to get him in. I think they

:26:35.:26:38.

made three places by that clever call. The fact that Kevin, Jenson

:26:39.:26:43.

came from so far back and finished effectively one spot behind Kevin

:26:44.:26:47.

was a really good effort. I think here it will be very close. Well, we

:26:48.:26:51.

know that Magnussen has that little problem earlier, but right now, he's

:26:52.:26:56.

still in the pits. But as we heard from Jonathan Neil, it's not a major

:26:57.:27:02.

trouble. Perez, they're still maybe hoping they can get his car back out

:27:03.:27:08.

on circuit despite the problems from earlier. Getting the body work,

:27:09.:27:11.

should be going on to the car fairly soon. We'll see if Perez does make

:27:12.:27:14.

it out just at the end of the session. Just under eight minutes to

:27:15.:27:17.

go in the first practice session from Malaysia and currently being

:27:18.:27:22.

topped by Lewis Hamilton, who put it on poll position in Melbourne, but

:27:23.:27:26.

then of course suffered an engine problem. Interestingly that engine

:27:27.:27:29.

is the one they're using here today. It was such a minor problem, but

:27:30.:27:34.

when they fixed it, they felt it was - it should be happy to run, so they

:27:35.:27:37.

decided to run it today. Didn't want to go to another engine with its

:27:38.:27:41.

limitation on the number of power units you get through the year, you

:27:42.:27:45.

don't want to waist any mileage if you can avoid it, and Hamilton

:27:46.:27:48.

certainly doesn't seem to be suffering any on-going problems with

:27:49.:27:52.

that power unit because he is fastest. Raikkonen is second for

:27:53.:27:55.

Ferrari, that's a bit of a boost for the team. And if you look tat the

:27:56.:27:59.

actual performance levels over the Melbourne race weekend, and look at

:28:00.:28:03.

the fasest laps during the weekend, interestingly, Ferrari emerged as

:28:04.:28:06.

the second best team, if you just look across the whole weekend in

:28:07.:28:09.

terms of fastest laps, well, they didn't seem to be able to do in the

:28:10.:28:14.

race, Ferrari, was consistently lap at a fast pace. But there was no

:28:15.:28:17.

denying that they had some pace there, Tony. So there is some

:28:18.:28:21.

promise at Ferrari. I think they didn't find overtaking easy, did

:28:22.:28:25.

they? I think the VRS problems on one of the cars. So it's - it's

:28:26.:28:31.

early days and I think it's - if they're lacking straight-line speed

:28:32.:28:35.

and overtaking, they're going to be find out here. Yes, true, but I

:28:36.:28:40.

think if - if anybody can get a good performance out of those cars, it's

:28:41.:28:43.

both their drivers here this weekend, Raikkonen and Alonso with,

:28:44.:28:47.

as I say, tremendous records here. Both have delivered superb results.

:28:48.:28:51.

That's a bit more encouraging. Lotus back out and back in again with no

:28:52.:28:55.

problems. Romain Grosjean, so the car that stopped out on track

:28:56.:28:59.

earlier on has been able to go out there. There we are at Force India.

:29:00.:29:04.

Have they put the body work on yet? Some bits are on yet. So clearly

:29:05.:29:10.

they're trying to get it ready and you can see Perez in the background

:29:11.:29:15.

beginning to put his overalls on, so there is maybe a chance that he's

:29:16.:29:18.

going to get a lap in before the end of this session. So fingers crossed

:29:19.:29:20.

for the Force India boys they can get him back out. There is the other

:29:21.:29:26.

car of Nico Hulkenberg, and once again an impressive performance from

:29:27.:29:31.

Hulkenberg last time out. Finished in sixth place. You mentioned Alonso

:29:32.:29:36.

struggled to overtake, so Hulkenberg proving he's never a pushover, is

:29:37.:29:41.

he? No, he's one of these new generation drivers, a future star,

:29:42.:29:45.

just waiting the opportunity to be able to prove it. Well, let's see

:29:46.:29:48.

what heck do here this weekend. Pretty good record of scoring points

:29:49.:29:54.

on this Malaysia circuit, in fact, qualified fifth here when he drove

:29:55.:29:57.

for Williams back in 2010. Best finish was actually last year when

:29:58.:30:01.

he was was wa Sauber and finished in #th position but was ninth for Force

:30:02.:30:05.

India in 2012 as well. Let's get some more news on -- news in the pit

:30:06.:30:11.

lane. Interesting, because Daniel Ricciardo and the Red Bull just came

:30:12.:30:15.

in, he stopped - simulated the time of what a pit stop should be

:30:16.:30:19.

normally be, and then went back out and so, therefore, they must be

:30:20.:30:22.

quite ahead of their programme because they're thinking about right

:30:23.:30:25.

now about the race scenario, what is the temperature going to do when you

:30:26.:30:29.

sit from for the five seconds before they start off. So, I have to say

:30:30.:30:33.

that Red Bull must be in a reasonable position with the

:30:34.:30:35.

reliability right now. That's encouraging. As we said, Vettel is

:30:36.:30:40.

currently 7th and Ricciardo 12th now in this session. So not showing a

:30:41.:30:45.

great turn of speed, but often on a Friday morning, we don't see the

:30:46.:30:48.

relative performance of the teams that clearly. Mind you, we are

:30:49.:30:52.

seeing that Hamilton is fastest and there's no great surprise there.

:30:53.:30:55.

We're expecting Mercedes once again to kind of be the pace setters. Yes,

:30:56.:31:02.

interestingly, if Nico was to win here, he'd equal the number of wins

:31:03.:31:08.

by his father. Five races. He says these things don't matter with him,

:31:09.:31:12.

but I'm sure he'll be happy to have another one. There's a few records

:31:13.:31:17.

to be matched or broken. Button heading around the final corner.

:31:18.:31:20.

Lewis Hamilton has the chance of matching the all British record for

:31:21.:31:26.

poll positions. That's been held by Jim Clark for a long time. 33. Yes,

:31:27.:31:30.

since 1968 and could be matched this weekend. I did ask Lewis yesterday

:31:31.:31:37.

whether matching man sell's -- Mansell's record mattered to him. He

:31:38.:31:41.

said, the numbers don't really mean that much, what matters is getting

:31:42.:31:45.

out there and having some success. I think that British record of Jim

:31:46.:31:48.

Clark's, which has stood for a long time, going to be a meaningful thing

:31:49.:31:54.

if he matches it and then goes on to break it. He had such few starts in

:31:55.:31:58.

those days. Jim Clark's record was extraordinary. Yes. Usually about 10

:31:59.:32:01.

races a season at that time. Yes. And now we have got virtually 20

:32:02.:32:05.

reasons -- races a season. Yes. The opportunity of scoring a poll

:32:06.:32:09.

position much higher. This year we have a poll position trophy to think

:32:10.:32:14.

about as well. That's right. But that's something we got to think

:32:15.:32:21.

about as we go through the year. I would unite think Mercedes Mercedes

:32:22.:32:25.

driver would claim that. Yes. Not many odds on others. Alex, only a

:32:26.:32:28.

couple of minutes left on this session. Give us your thoughts on

:32:29.:32:31.

what we have been seeing here? Pretty much what you expected? What

:32:32.:32:35.

about performance of Ferrari, is that something to be encouraged by?

:32:36.:32:39.

I think, as you said in Australia, that there were actually quite

:32:40.:32:43.

stronk and you would expect Ferrari to be, you know - they made it very

:32:44.:32:47.

clear, they have a point to prove this year. I think they have more

:32:48.:32:51.

than enough capabilities to do that. And as you say, Kimi and Fernando

:32:52.:32:57.

are doing the best in that car. It's interesting to see Red Bull seem so

:32:58.:33:02.

relaxed. So I think that they probably have something. Vettel did

:33:03.:33:09.

only nine laps and he's only 9/10th off. So I think that they are still

:33:10.:33:14.

kind of someone to pay both attention to. And 17 laps for

:33:15.:33:19.

Ricciardo, so that's quite encouraging. Massa, a good speed

:33:20.:33:24.

trap figure, one of the fastest speed trap figures. And a squeal, if

:33:25.:33:32.

you were listening to that on radio, that was Kimi Raikkonen locking up

:33:33.:33:36.

the left front. That's the kind of noise we do get to hear right now.

:33:37.:33:41.

They hear it for the first time, the drivers. Yeah, it's good. Yeah.

:33:42.:33:46.

Raikkonen just completing another lap here. As the clock continues to

:33:47.:33:52.

Towards end of this first session. Raikkonen currently second fastest

:33:53.:33:58.

on that 1 minute 14. 843 just a 10th or so off the pace set by Lewis

:33:59.:34:03.

Hamilton earlier on. Going back to the speed... Lewis Hamilton through

:34:04.:34:07.

the travel trap. I think he's going to be OK. Yeah. But that's

:34:08.:34:10.

interesting. We haven't seen the build-up to that, but we certainly

:34:11.:34:13.

picked up Hamilton as he flew through the gravel trap. Fairly

:34:14.:34:17.

unusual place, the exit of turn 11 there where he went off. Yeah. Will

:34:18.:34:25.

be interesting to see. Power-related issue. We're going to get a view

:34:26.:34:31.

now. A bit of a lockup into turn 9, runs wide. Lost on entry here. OK.

:34:32.:34:37.

Through 10. Let's see what happens here. He's on the curve. Oh, dear.

:34:38.:34:44.

Wow! So I guess he shouldn't use that entry. Stay off the curve.

:34:45.:34:49.

Whether he was distracted and working out something else or

:34:50.:34:52.

talking to the team, I don't know, that was an unusual little slipup

:34:53.:34:56.

from Lewis Hamilton. What I was saying about speeds, when we looked

:34:57.:35:01.

out of the commentary box window in Melbourne, it was visibly quicker.

:35:02.:35:05.

Even if they're not as noisy, that's got to be significant. We're talking

:35:06.:35:10.

about 200 miles an hour. 320 or something like that. That's right.

:35:11.:35:16.

We're seeing speed trap figures of 315kph. So about 195, 196 miles an

:35:17.:35:20.

hour. So, yeah, the top speeds are a little bit higher, haul though

:35:21.:35:24.

they're cornering speeds are lower with the loss of downforce this

:35:25.:35:28.

year. So the chequered flag is out on this session. And a few cars just

:35:29.:35:32.

to finish off their laps. 11 cars currently on track, in fact. Quite a

:35:33.:35:37.

few cars out just at the end. I don't think that Perez did manage to

:35:38.:35:42.

get back out sadly in the Force India. We did see Romain Grosjean,

:35:43.:35:45.

of course, do a lap. So good for the Lotus boys to see him back on

:35:46.:35:48.

circuit. Nico Rosberg, he's currently just finishing off a lap

:35:49.:35:53.

as well. But we here not expecting to see any improvement. Looks like

:35:54.:35:57.

Lewis Hamilton will finish this first session with the fastest time

:35:58.:36:02.

ahead of the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. Going marbles out there,

:36:03.:36:07.

very slippery. A bit wide. Interesting, Hamilton saying it's

:36:08.:36:11.

like driving on marbles out there, very slippery. We saw it run wide.

:36:12.:36:15.

So clearly track conditions are not that easy. Track temperature of some

:36:16.:36:19.

48 degrees at the moment by the way. So Hamilton, Raikkonen, Rosberg,

:36:20.:36:26.

then Button, and then Magnussen, Vettel 7th. Hulkenberg 8th, Massa

:36:27.:36:30.

and Bottas in the top 10. Both Williams in the top 10 ahead of

:36:31.:36:37.

Alonso. Ricciardo was 12th, and Kvyat, Gutierrez, Bianchi, and no

:36:38.:36:42.

time set for Perez, Maldonado, or for Grosjean. So that's how this

:36:43.:36:46.

first session has gone. Been a difficult start again for both

:36:47.:36:49.

Caterham and Lotus, but for Mercedes, it looks as though they're

:36:50.:36:53.

going to be fighting fit as we saw in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago.

:36:54.:37:00.

Thanks to Alex Rossi and Tony. Let's get back down stairs now to Lee. An

:37:01.:37:07.

interesting session. Good if you're Hamilton. They were hoping that all

:37:08.:37:10.

the work they did in the last couple of weeks in the mechanic s looks

:37:11.:37:15.

like they needed a boost, but they did very few laps the. Romain

:37:16.:37:21.

Grosjean did get back out there. And Raikkonen, he was a surprise popping

:37:22.:37:26.

up in second. Not too sure. If Ferrari thought was going to be a

:37:27.:37:32.

little bit quicker around here, but maybe Alonso, more than Kimi, but

:37:33.:37:36.

this circuit is little bit difficult in terms of its characteristics,

:37:37.:37:41.

whether it's a contender in terms of the overall is one thing, but it

:37:42.:37:45.

will be more competitive. We can see there how they finished up. A good

:37:46.:37:50.

day if you have am Mercedes Benz in the back of your car, but that's

:37:51.:37:54.

certainly not a surprise. No. They have the upper hand, but you have to

:37:55.:38:05.

say tore row Rosso, is not far away. Therefore, I think they'll be a

:38:06.:38:08.

little bit faster again. We can see the Lotus guys right at the bottom.

:38:09.:38:12.

They're going to have a long night and not a good day either if you're

:38:13.:38:16.

Sergio Perez. Kamui Kobayashi didn't get that many laps either. That's

:38:17.:38:19.

the problem with these guys this is a real opportunity nor them at the

:38:20.:38:22.

beginning of the season when other teams have reliability problem ps,

:38:23.:38:25.

try to maybe get that one point that could be critical at the end of the

:38:26.:38:37.

season between Marushia. But it's just all switched when we got to

:38:38.:38:43.

Melbourne. OK, this is the time where the teams really, really have

:38:44.:38:47.

to get the work right to give them the edge for the rest of the

:38:48.:38:50.

weekend. Thank you very much fur your company so far. You have done

:38:51.:38:53.

the hard work. You might as well stay up for free practice so. We'd

:38:54.:39:02.

love to see you in 2 hours 20 minutes. Bye, bye.

:39:03.:39:05.
