The Singapore Grand Prix Highlights Formula 1

Previously: What was that? England! Wheel Hamilton wins. This is Formula

One. Race 14: Singapore. I have got fired, guys. How do you

react when the pressure is on? The chance of victory is almost gone?

And fortune stars refuse to shine, when you pull away slowly from the

starting line? Hamilton has been swamped. He has some work to do. How

do you act when the going gets tough? Do your spirits sag when the

brakes are rough? Hamilton crashes. Or is there a new flame that burns

brighter, as the battle grows and the championship is tighter? Another

brilliant piece of race craft. This is a psychological battle. Hamilton

wins the Italian Grand Prix. How long, how hard will you fight? That

is what the whole grid wants to know. If you let him past on this

lap please. I am not letting him through. He has had the message. He

has hit me. Dot-macro darkness and humidity bring excessive heat,

building pressure, side-by-side with the man you must beat. Anybody can

fight when they are ahead, but an uphill grind is better. Into Turn 1.

Rosberg goes fastest. Hamilton has done it. It is pole position. If you

wish for success, then tell me a son, how will you react when the

pressure is on? What would you do indeed? Welcome to Singapore and the

title race is really hotting up. The pressure is immense. Yesterday

during qualifying you could almost feel the weight of expectation. What

a treat we have this season. A roller-coaster from the very often,

in Australia. Mainly dished out by the protagonists at the front. This

is the closest qualifying we have seen in the top ten, around a track

with the most corners, it shows the rate of development of all of the

teams. Incredible battle between Lewis and Nico. This is how well

they have been driving this year, look at the different story from

Lewis Hamilton. You can see the natural born winner, Hamilton. But

that is crucial. Where we are seeing the battle hotting up is Rosberg

with only one retirement. And as against what David has said, Nico is

Mr sensible, if he cannot win he is happy to finish second. That adds to

the excitement of the battle. That back to front Lewis has had to do

three times, coming from retirements, that is to mess with

you mentally? He is really mature, when he left McLaren we were worried

about how he would get on in a new environment but actually he has

grown, he is a lot more rounded and a lot more stable. You can see that

coming through in the way he has come back from bad performances. He

can still win it. He can, and he has been fighting an uphill battle. He

was in front in Barcelona, the pain of not finishing the first race and

giving such a big lead the Rosberg, that was catch up time. But he never

capitalised. After Barcelona it went downhill about so now he is fighting

a rearguard action. Four wins in a row at the start of the season, who

says he cannot do it again? Qualifying yesterday was a

masterclass from Mercedes but it was so tired. Jenson Button costly

mistake. He by Ricky Kling Magnusson for the eighth time this season.

Ferrari had been looking quick but telemetry problem. Alonso only

managed his customary fifth. Sebastian Vettel was disappointed

after failing to put a map together. He starts in fourth Daniel

Ricciardo narrowly pipped him. So Mercedes battled it out, Rosberg a

remarkable finish meant he took his third pole position. It physically,

mentally, for the car and because of the temperatures. The tyres are not

lasting how many pit stops people do, there are so many things, so

much room for mistakes. It will be crucial. -- rekeyed Kevin Magnussen.

Finland will be cheering on the fourth row of the grid. Rookies

outshone them or expose that lack of their more experienced team-mates.

Tough day for Force India. Marcus Ericsson lines up at the back

of the grid. How close do you like it? Mercedes were dominant but less

dominant than usual and Red Bull looking sharp, particularly

Ricciardo. P was an amazing, nobody ever respected him to do that slap,

he could have been on pole position. -- to do that lack -- lap. Ricciardo

was the star man in qualifying. So many factors in Singapore. As we

were speaking I felt some drips on my head but it might just be from

the pits. You never know what can happen with the weather, 100% chance

of safety car historically, the Red Bulls have everything to gain. Maybe

we can expect fireworks at the beginning. An opportunity for Red

Bull to come through on the charge. All of the talk was about the team

radio but no driver coaching about, how will that manifest itself? It is

a nonsense, some of the driver said it was a good thing, some said it

will not change anything. They will always get the best out of the

machinery. Having a conversation with the engineer to get some

pointers is a nice little extra bit of support but they can work it out

on their own anyway. Who will win? I have a soft spot the Sebastian

Vettel, he is a star around here, but it would be a mighty task for

him to do that. Hamilton looks favourite, vet all the outsider.

there is the 22 points that divide them. If Lewis wins the next three

races he could still be a point behind, intense pressure. But six

races remaining, still 175 points available including the double

points in Abu Dhabi. And don't discount Daniel Ricciardo, he still

has a shot. Mathematically, Mercedes could take the constructors' title

in Japan. Great battle between Williams and Ferrari the third

place. And McLaren and Force India, just a single point between them for

the all-important fifth spot on the table, strategy obviously

all-important in Singapore. Tom is at the Harare, what have you got?

This race will be dominated by the tyres, most likely it will be won by

either to stop or three-stop strategy. On paper three stops is

ten seconds faster but track position is crucial, it is like

Monaco, it is very difficult to overtake. If you are a

conservationist like Daniel Ricciardo, and you can make to stops

work you could then be sitting pretty at the end. But one proviso,

that is assuming we do not have the safety car that will scupper all of

the plans. The likelihood is we will, it's going to the grid with

David and Eddie in great company. Great qualifying yesterday, what is

your strategy? Hopefully we go for it. The plan is to do that and

hopefully we are in a position to do that. Hopefully give a few of these

guys are a bit of cheer today. Give us a great afternoon. Starting

further back than you have normally, what can you do from here? This race

is so long. Normally two hours, and a lot of things happened, anything

is possible. We need to go with that mindset, take every opportunity. Our

main target today is Ferrari. We have a good battle with them in the

points. Let's try to beat them. You must be feeling pretty good the way

your first season is going? It was good yesterday but today is the

race, we will do our best, we have to be patient. It will be tricky but

it is the same for everyone. Added pressure, at the front of the grid?

The cars are much closer to you than before, are you worried about them

catching up? Yes, they are catching up, but Nico has a problem with the

electronics they have changed the steering wheel twice. Does that add

to the excitement? Yes, this is another excitement, I hope they can

fix it but they are working hard. Let's wait and see. As Nikki louder

said, problems and Nico Rosberg, only five minutes to spare. Toto, it

looked like a steering wheel problem but among it was an electronic

problem, the steering wheel did not function has expected so we changed

the steering wheel, the electronic started to go against we need to

work on that. Any worries quit among yes. Thank you, I will let you go.

Just 0.007s separating them yesterday, about 30 centimetres of

tarmac. But the Bulls behind them are on the charge. This should be

some start. David and Ben in the commentary box.

RADIO: Intermittent fault, if you have problems, pull away manually,

otherwise you will have to start from the pit lane. Real concerns the

Nico Rosberg, he is actually turning the steering a lot on the grid, what

is that about, David? He could be resetting the power steering, it

could be the case of zeroing the steering. He is not moving, could be

a pit lane start, it surely will be. He cannot get the car running. He is

trying to reset, going through the procedure. If you get away before

the last car he can take up his position. He is getting false

neutrals. I wonder if it is a loose connection, here's hoping there is

some connection between the steering wheel and the ECU. He has had the

lion share of reliability this year. We saw earlier in the programme how

much that has affected Lewis Hamilton. Drama even before the

start of this Grand Prix. That turns things on their head. Will he get

going at all? Huge opportunity to Lewis Hamilton. Interestingly, in a

week that saw a referendum making headlines across the world, I did my

own opinion poll of the international journalist yesterday

to see who they thought would win the championship, 28 out of 60 went

far Hamilton, 32 for Rosberg. Even split. 47% from the British driver,

they might change their opinion right now. That is familiar from the

referendum. I am surprised at that. I thought it would have been more if

the slash 50. No question an underlying feeling that Lewis has

that last bit of speed. -- 50-50. Coe by Ashley is going very slowly.

And people 's after the side of the circuit. -- Kamui Kobayashi. We said

it was going to be a big issue. With the power units being used, and that

looks like race over for And of course we do not even know if

he will get to drive a car in Japan. Caterham are keeping everyone in the

dark. Rosberg is in the pits, can they get it running properly? They

may change the steering wheel to see if it can fix the issue. He is

pulling away, trying to find his gear. Real drama for Nico Rosberg.

In the pits trying to keep an eye on things, but this could turn things

around, because if Lewis Hamilton wins the race he would score 25

points and he could take the lead in the championship today. You are

absolutely right, the moment that Nico Rosberg pulled out of the

pits, he was complaining that the gearbox and clutch were behaving

abnormally which is why they changed the steering wheel of course. I am

trying to keep an eye and it but I am halfway up the pit lane so I

cannot see exactly what is going on. The problem that Kamui Kobayashi had

was that the brakes were not working, the extinguisher has gone

all over the car as well, so that is race over four Kamui Kobayashi. He

will not start the Grand Prix. We wonder whether Nico Rosberg will

now. That leaves a gap on the grid for Sebastian Vettel on the inside,

qualifying in fourth, so he will have a clear sight of

qualifying in fourth, so he will corner. Daniel Ricciardo is actually

slightly ahead of him. We are on board with Ricciardo, nobody to his

left because that is when Nico Rosberg would have been. Doing the

last minute procedure is that the drivers go through. Hamilton on his

own in the front row. Watch for Alonso, he starts in fifth, and

Marseille and six. Kimi Raikkonen seventh, Bottas, Magnusson and Kvyat

complete the top ten. Jenson Button starts from 11th place. The last

couple of cars go into place but we're missing two cars, 20 cars are

ready to start in Singapore. Lights out. Away we go, Hamilton gets off

the line and Vettel moves of the inside to battle with Ricciardo.

Alonso gets both Red Bulls but he has took at the chicane. Hamilton is

leading the race and Alonso re-emerges in second but I wonder

whether he will have to give some of that back. He has made good starts

in the past but we will wait to see what happens. He is ahead of

Ricciardo. Magnusson is battling with the Williams of Bottas. Clean

so far, I have not seen any contact. Alonso gives back the place that he

gave. He is defending. Button will take advantage of Magnusson in the

McLaren. Rosberg has got away. Magnusson has made a mistake. Massa

retakes the place. Rosberg is in the race. He has started but what action

we have got. Daniil Kvyat locking up. The Toro Rosso is trying to

squeeze through. It will be interesting to see how many places

Alonso will have two give back at the skipping that corner. Just

easing away from the Ferrari. Raikkonen in fifth place, a good

start for Kimi Raikkonen and let's not forget Jenson Button is on the

new option tyres. One of the few that have the ability to use a

brand-new set of tyres. Getting back into the action have to a

disappointing qualification. Hamilton leads. Alonso is in third

for the moment. RADIO: Check the front wheel. Copy that. Grosjean is

in 15th and Rosberg is at the back as he tries to pick up a few places.

Hamilton is opening a gap, over three time when a Sebastian Vettel.

We have a race on our hands. RADIO: The only thing that is working is

the gift shift paddle. Rosberg is severely hampered, he has no

information on the --, all he can do is change gear which is the basic

thing that he needs to do, but there is no information coming to him. --

the dashboard. Was there not a race in China when he had a similar

situation when he was not getting in formation, you can see that the

dashboard is displaying everything. What they mean is the actual

adjustments to the differential. They may be aware of the fact that

that is not going to change. Daniel Ricciardo is currently in fourth

place and we go on board with the Australian, he is behind his

team-mate and also behind Alonso. As you said, they are investigating the

incident about Alonso, investigating "track limits". He came up one place

and he is currently running in third. There is no question that he

was fully over the track limit. RADIO: We have to clear Gutierrez.

There is front wing damage. Front wing damage on both Force Indias.

Seeing their rival McLaren 's in fourth and ninth. Not the ideal

start to the Singapore Grand Prix when there is only one point

separating those two teams. We are looking down at Fernando Alonso.

What will the stewards decide? No further action warranted. Race

control have decided that there is no further action. Alonso has gained

one of those places and he is in third. They may feel he was ahead of

Daniel before reaching the breaking point. I am sure he will voice the

opinion that if there was a barrier he would never have made it back

into the race but there you go. He is putting in a fast lap time as

Rosberg makes his way through. He has to get past Chilton. Why can he

not get past the Marussia? He may be concerned about his fuel usage. DRS

is now enabled. He is shifting so early. Look at that. He is in a

straight line. The car is not right. It is running but not at full

capacity. You can see the initial getaway from Ricciardo, little bit

tardy. Ferrari going around the outside with its nose ahead. That is

clearly why the stewards have decided no further action. Who else

was fast starting down there? Magnusson got a good getaway, I

think. I am looking out for Jenson Button. Can we see any of the

contact that we heard about from the Force Indias? Certainly not in the

first few corners. Pretty good. Let's watch from Alonso's point of

view. He short shifted and even then he still got wheel spin, a bit of

torque, that they have these days. He may have flat spotted the tire.

This is Ricciardo. It did not sound particular bad. He was getting

mugged from both sides. Alonso allowed Vettel to get past him.

RADIO: Attack Magnusson, attack Magnusson. We have two laps to

attack Magnusson. Jean-Eric Vergne is being told what his team-mate is

up to. He is effectively being told to go into overtaking mode with the

power unit. Renault power units in the back of the Toro Rosso but

against the Mercedes power units in the McLaren. It will be tough to

overtake in the early stages. Six laps had been completed at the

Singapore Grand Prix and we are on Lap 7. Lewis Hamilton leads by 2.3

seconds. Fernando Alonso got a very quick start. He has dropped away

from the top two. Magnusson is in a fight for ninth

with Kvyat. Nico Rosberg had to start from the pit lane and he is

making little progress, down in 20th place, stuck behind the Caterham of

Marcus Ericsson. He has been unable to make progress. Looking at the

amount of fuel being used, as we have seen before, Hamilton is

usually very good on fuel consumption and that seems to be the

way again, he has a bit in hand versus Vettel's Red Bull powered

car. In many cases he does not need to start the race with as much fuel

on board and of course weight is performance, and it gives

performance ability. The reason that drivers can make the difference and

the driving style and how they come off the throttle, how early they

come off the throttle, and the brake application. RADIO: What are we

waiting for? He is losing ground. Jean-Eric Vergne goes past Daniil

Kvyat. Whether that was a response to his message to the team, but he

has now got Pascal Kvyat. He will now chase magazine. -- got past him.

We knew that he could have a go at the car in front but he did not

manage it, he drops back. This is much better around turn 23. DRS in

activation. A straightforward pass. A bitter team orders going on? That

is within the rules. -- Abe bit Rosberg has still not got past

Eriksson. He has no place in the car whatsoever. Whether the electronic

problem is having that huge effect, it seems to be. We're watching the

telemetry as well. We're not getting any clues. He is short shifting and

there does not seem to be any acceleration. Going straight from

third into fifth gear. Let's see if he does it again. Maybe not on this

section. It is a bit of a chicane. In third gear presumably. Coming in

to turn 13 and presumably he has the same issue, trying to avoid using

fourth gear. Another set of super-soft tyres. This could be an

aggressive strategy. He is trying to get into the points, outside the

points, and he had a problem with his car last time. He comes out with

Max Chilton sunny drops right to the back. He is in front of Sutil of

course making a pit stop a few moments ago, you would have expected

that. He goes straight to the inside and passed Max Chilton, making much

easier work than Rosberg did earlier. That is crucial, you do not

want to be running in a dirty area being trapped by another car. You

can see what is happening. RADIO: Pit lane limits will not work, in

first gear, hold it at 6500 rpm. He will have to do his own speed limit

checks in the pit lane. He has a major electronics issue. A light

normally comes on when you select the different circumference of tyre.

They have to make sure that the Thai collisions are correct and they make

an adjustment on the steering wheel. Currently I would suggest that the

car thinks it is running in the rain. That is probably why there is

a gear shift issue. Meanwhile Felipe Massa has made his way to the pits,

he was in sixth position. Let's see when he comes back out. He was ahead

of Jenson Button, Button stays out for the moment and we will see how

that results in a fume laps. -- in a few laps. This would indicate a

three-stop race for Felipe Massa. Maybe it is a split strategy, let's

wait and find out. Bottas is out on the circuit. One Toro Rosso and one

motors comes into the pits. Jules Bianchi goes over the start finish

line. Hamilton is still leading the race. Hulkenberg gets past Eriksson

but Rosberg still has not done anything. Rosberg is still limping

along. There he is. Daniil Kvyat has made his pit stop and he comes out

behind the Mercedes. Kvyat made short work of it. The championship

leader is being passed by a 20-year-old Russian in one corner.

He knows that he has a major issue. Just trying to work out, with 50

laps left to go, why they would leave the car out there, hoping for

it to reset itself? Let's take a look the Williams pit stop for

Felipe Massa. That is quite normal when your garage and mechanics is on

the left, when you turn in, you tend to turn earlier to make sure you do

not hit anyone. I do not know what that reaction from the mechanic was

about. It was not a great stop and the car bounces down a bit wrongly.

Look how close it is between him, and Valtteri Bottas makes his pit

stop. This could be interesting to see how it works out of course.

Bottas was a bit further down the order. Massa has just gone through

having made his pit stop earlier. That is important. Massa is still in

front of the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

Not much to choose between them. I am in the pit lane near Harare and

you are right it was a bit slow, but the front right caught my attention.

RADIO: We will be changing steering wheel and take you on to the jacks

because the clutch will not work. The front right of Kimi Raikkonen, a

lot of grain, the rain last night might be causing a few issues. That

is interesting, the track completely cleaned up. Hulkenberg now in the

14th position. Picking up on the engineer. RADIO: We stick to the

plan, target plus one. We will find out soon enough as Vettel is in.

Hamilton's closes the challenger in this race. Alonso following him in

and Ricciardo, Red Bull stopping on the same lap. You are absolutely

right, interesting they do that on the same lap as Alonso. Shows the

confidence they have enough time, going back out in the same order.

Are they all on the same compound? I believe they are now on the super

soft. No difference in strategy. Daniel Ricciardo we are watching as

he rejoins. Ahead of Massa, coming through, not far behind is

Raikkonen. Sandwiching Gutierrez, currently in ninth place but not for

much longer because Kimi Raikkonen sweeps past in the Ferrari. We have

not seen Gutierrez into the pits. Seems to be going for a longer first

stint. It'll be interesting when Rosberg comes in, they will have to

change the tyres, the clutch not working. Box box, box box. He will

change the tyres, the clutch not have to spin up the rear axle before

they drop the car down. He will have to be on the radio asking how does

he know what 6500 rpm is, using the red lights. They do not have a red

counter, not something you normally ever need, they have the audio

signal, and lights as a visual reference. You will not under cut

Hamilton, stand down, save tyres and fuel. Hamilton in, clean stop for

the race leader in Singapore. He will be out in clear air by the

looks of things when he rejoins the track. This has worked out extremely

well for him. This has brought Jenson Button into second place, by

the way. He will be the closest to him. They have been timing this

beautifully, there is button in the background but Hamilton has come out

in front of his former team-mate. I wonder if he will go the two stops

this afternoon. His race engineer said it would be strategy plus one.

His team-mate with a great stop. That could suggest, they have had to

get rid of the super soft, taking so much energy out of it earlier with

the heavy fuel. Jean-Eric Vergne with a surprise fastest lap. Little

bits of traffic here, we believe Rosberg will be coming in pretty

soon. Watching out for that. In fact he is in now. Vergne under

investigation. That might explain the fastest lap. Massa has gained a

position. Nico Rosberg coming in. Look how slowly he is going. Trying

to find neutral. Hats off to the team the trying everything. Rear

axle app in the air. Steering wheel change. Watching from the pit wall,

this is something they will not have practised. They are resetting

everything they have switched the car off, it is going through its

reboot, Ctrl-Alt-Del. They must feel the clutch will be there now. Now

they are looking for the gear, no response at all. Still in neutral.

That is the bad news he does not want. No points this afternoon if he

cannot get going. It means that if Lewis Hamilton stays where he is he

will take over the championship lead. We are only at one quarter

distance, long way to go. Frustration. Reliability has not

been good for Mercedes this year. Let's park it up. Stop, stop. It is

all over the Nico Rosberg, the World Championship leader is not going to

score any points at all and that is a huge opportunity now the Lewis

Hamilton to take the championship lead for the second time this year.

Valtteri Bottas making a move on Sergio Perez meanwhile, in the

seventh position. But Lewis Hamilton is leading the Grand Prix, Sebastian

Vettel in the second because Jenson Button has just made a pit stop.

That has brought button back out in ninth position. Is going for the

past into five. Kevin Magnussen on the inside of Esteban Gutierrez.

Into 11th place, behind Nico Hulkenberg, -- Nico Hulkenberg

bearing down on them. Up to one third distance in this Singapore

Grand Prix, in the night-time, under the floodlights around the streets

track, providing us with this stunning location, stunning view. Of

course it was the first night-time race, but we have another with

Bahrain. One of the most exciting races of the year but this time we

have lost that opportunity of a wheel-to-wheel dice between Hamilton

and Rosberg but some good racing going on. Button and Vergne, the

eighth position. Kevin Magnussen behind them but out of the entry,

Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber's woeful season continues. Another to add to

the list of retirements. Kobayashi did not even make the start, Rosberg

has gone and now Gutierrez as well. Frustration there, at the back of

the garage. I sympathise with the season he is having but that will

not help at all. It has to be vented somehow or other I suppose. Three

retirements in the first 20 laps of this Grand Prix, that is more than

we have seen at some of the circuits and nobody has even hit a wall yet.

You imagine somebody might do that before the end. As fatigue fits in,

as we get more wheel-to-wheel action, that is a chance to make

mistakes. It is bumpy in all of the braking zones. As the body

dehydrates and the blues two or three kilograms of body weight, the

severe dehydration can affect the decision-making capabilities. Alonso

has an amazing record here. RADIO: Come in, Max, front right puncture.

That is interesting, bit of debris? We have not seen any carbon fibre

Ron track. Is that the front right? Presumably he would have felt that

but the team get that information from the telemetry. Relatively new

set of tyres. He was the last to it, whether it was something to do with

the pit stop? Is it just purely a change. They cannot get it under, of

course, the jack. Finally they get it in the year and put a soft tyre

on, does not look to be any damage to the front suspension, he is on

his way. He is now the final runner at this stage. On Lap 22 out of 61.

Over the one third distance mark now. We have lost three cars from

this Grand Prix already. Most notably of course Nico Rosberg. The

championship leader. He will not score any points at all this

weekend. Lee is talking to him. I think we all feel we have been

denied a great battle out there, if it carries on like this you could

also lose the lead in a chapel chip. Can you describe your emotions? Yes,

bit of a roller-coaster ride. Not even a roller-coaster, it just went

down. Very frustrating. To be driving behind the catering all the

time and sit on the grid. At that is the way it is. I was stuck without

hybrid power, so I do not have any electronic power, I could not use

the RS, nothing was working. The gear shift was shifting me to days

instead of one. You were trying everything, -- two gears. When did

you know there was a problem? When we change steering wheel and had the

same problem that is when I knew it was very serious. RADIO: It is

looking better than the first stint, but we might have picked up since

debris in the front wing, you might have lost some balance. It is OK,

still. Copy that, we will not panic. That was a problem last year, they

picked up some robber in the slotted gaps at the front wing and it cost

him some time. They can clean out out at the pit stop, using a warm

spatula. They can run it through that gap to knock out any debris.

They will not panic! I am sure he is delighted to hear that. Felipe Massa

heading in for a second stop, relatively early stop, certainly the

aggressive three stops strategy from Williams. Onto a soft set of tyres

and he will need one more stop to compete this Grand Prix. --

complete. We are onto lab 23 now, we would expect to see another pit stop

around Lap 40, something like that. RADIO: Push now, pushed now. We stay

out and push as much as we can. Raikkonen in fifth position right,

currently 12.9 seconds behind Ricciardo. But ask coming into the

pits, Williams solidly on this three stop tragedy for both cars. --

Valtteri Bottas. Kimi Raikkonen having a much better weekend, just

.1 seconds slower than Hamilton on the last lap. Quicker than his

team-mate Alonso. Great pit stop by Williams, 2.5 seconds you can tell

how long the pit lane is, you announced the car is in the pits

with still plenty of time to see it come to a stop. 27 seconds in total

lost from coming into the pits, getting the tyres changed and back

on your way. One of the slower pigs lanes, he has rejoined in 11th

place. Effectively he will be behind his team-mate, Felipe Massa, a bit

further up the road. He is currently behind Max Chilton running in last

and is now true but ask them to go pass straightaway? It will not take

him very long. Some indecision,. He now lets in three. Not taking any

chances, realising the importance of bringing both cars home. Don't know

if Chilton, we did not see that puncture of course, that is why he

dropped back. Maldonado, what happened here? The real gun was

still attached. Is the wheel nut secure? How could the car be

super-soft tyres, on his way once again. Definitely making another pit

stop this afternoon. He is going to come out behind his team-mate, Kimi

Raikkonen flashes through. Trying to do undercut. Getting a fresh set of

tyres on, giving it all beans now. Everything on this out loud, trying

easy it can take advantage. We will see them respond? Normally the

trigger point, Massa getting past Hulkenberg. Normally the activation

for the lights to tell the driver it is safe to release only comes into

play when the wheel gun is removed. Whether it is super-sensitive, that

is what allowed Maldonado to go or whether he is super frustrated,

going past there. That has brought Massa into a position now,

Hulkenberg was running in ninth. Valtteri Bottas currently in 10th

place. Sebastian Vettel into the pits, that is what we would expect

to see as he tries to respond to Fernando Alonso. Unless they try

something very different in terms of strategy. He either has not a lot of

grit or he is taking it very carefully. RADIO: It will kick off

soon. We go with strategy three. Hamilton worried about reliability.

Incomes Vettel, Sebastian Vettel, from second place but Alonso has

made the earlier stop and is hoping that the so-called undercut, the

advantage of making the earlier stop will be to his benefit.

A different strategy to Alonso. He is heading up to the last couple of

advantage, taking the place from Sebastian Vettel. He goes on to the

soft tyre. At this point, Lap 25/26, that was when he got to the end of

the race on that set of tyres but the teams are saying that the tyres

are softer this year. Alonso has gone for it on the second and third

sector, he had to go on it on that will to make sure he had the

advantage over Vettel. -- he had to go for it. We are seeing a severe

drop-off in the tyres. It is as though he hit the cliff, dropping

off the edge of the cliff. He has two really be gentle to bring the

car home into the pit stop. Lewis Hamilton is comfortably out in front

in this Grand Prix. Beginning to pick off some of the cars towards

the back and he is going to go up the order comprehensively, I would

think. Lewis Hamilton, the race leader with a comfortable advantage

at this stage, he goes into the pits. Which tyre will he go for?

Hamilton makes his second pit stop of the day. We think he will make

three stops. The management looks on. He is watching to see how the

pit stop goes. Back on the super-soft tyres. I was a slow

start, 4.7 seconds. That did not quite go according to plan. Plenty

of margin, 11 seconds of the road from Daniel Ricciardo. -- up the

road. Daniel Ricciardo is now the race leader but he has only made one

stop so far in the Grand Prix. We know that he is very impressive on

tyre use. Three times a race winner already this year but does he really

have an opportunity here today? Hamilton is the next car to come

around behind. He is still running in second. Magnusson has pitted from

eighth place. Let's see what happens to Hamilton. He was a bit long when

he stops. They are trying to clean something out of the front flap,

just getting Rob out of the gaps. Not taking any chances. You can see

the mechanics with their hands, trying to clean it out. He has got

the time in hand, so they might as well do that. Fernando Alonso is in

third place. Ricciardo comes in. I do not think there is any chance in

the end. He did 14 laps on the super-soft tyres. Let's see what he

goes for. The soft tyre goes on, it is asking an awful lot to do half of

the race distance on those tyres. We saw it last year but last year it

was the medium tyres. A bit more resistance perhaps. Nobody is

showing great stint length on the softer tyres. Alonso has just done

the fastest lap of the race. The gap was 3.9 seconds to Hamilton last

time. Alonso is flying, keep your eyes on the Ferrari. He has been

impressive so far this weekend in the Ferrari. RADIO: INAUDIBLE

I understand, we can see the issue. Is there a power issue? Bad news for

Daniel Ricciardo. Daniel Ricciardo seems to be having difficulties out

there in the Red Bull. What a disappointing opening it would be

for Ricciardo, he has been the star of the season for so many people, if

he can't continue his challenge. We will keep an eye on that in a

moment, but for the moment we are keeping an eye on what Grosjean and

Peres are doing with Kvyat in behind. RADIO: We saw it on TV, come

on them. Not very fair from Peres. -- then. He comes from a long way

back, he does not run over the circuit. Actually I think that is

just racing. Peres did not try to close the door on him. Far back,

look how far back he came from. It was on the exit of the corner. He

crucially did not run over the kerb which is there to give a bit of

space before the concrete wall. That is just racing. It is not an

incident, just a bit of racing. What he thinks is not fair is that he has

not just moved over and given him the place. The front wing of Peres

has come off. It has just shared from Peres' car. He has notified the

team earlier that he thought he had damage. It is amazing he can still

drive it like that. A safety car has been called. What is this going to

do for everyone? Will people can infer the final stop? There is still

a long way to go in the Grand Prix. And of course they have to drive at

a measured pace, the safety car is on the circuit. There is not the old

opportunity of dashing into the pits and making up a lot of time but

there are sometimes opportunities under the safety car. Let's see what

happens to Peres. This is down and turned seven. He tries to cut back

and get a straight exit as they run down towards the gate. Well, Sutil

was not aware that he was there and he goes to take his racing line and

squeezes him against the wall to catch his front wing. -- turn eight.

The front wing dismantles itself under the car. There is loads of

debris. Charlie Whiting says that when you have the carbon fibre on

the circuit you have to be on the safe side particularly before turn

ten. Nana the front runners yet coming into the pits. Lewis is

coming in. We gather that Hamilton is just coming around. I am not sure

that he is, actually. RADIO: Look for debris. That was a bit late, I

went over a lot of stuff. I got the message as I was going over the

stuff. Hamilton is concerned but he is staying out. Alonso is coming

from second place. They have gone for another pit stop and he comes

out on the soft tyre, hoping to get to the end of the Grand Prix. That

is his third start of the day. Ricciardo stays out there. He is

trying to get to the end, a safety car could really help him because if

they can look after the tyres, cool down a bit, that will give him more

opportunity. Alonso did this last year on his way to a strong podium

finish, making a stop at bit earlier than this in fact to go all the way

to the end of the Grand Prix. I wonder how this will work out.

Hamilton has not made a pit stop yet but he still could do it next time.

Jenson Button comes in on the soft tyre. That is his second stop. It

was looking like he was targeting a two-stop strategy this afternoon.

This may well change his strategy, it depends how long the safety car

stays out. The Toro Rosso, there, that is a bit naughty. Lewis

Hamilton gets ready for the restart here, the safety car is heading

towards the pits and Hamilton has to go for it now, as he is being chased

by the Red Bulls. We still have some distance to go in the Singapore

Grand Prix. The race restarts. Hamilton opens up the gap over

Sebastian Vettel in second and Ricciardo in third. Watch out for

Alonso because he is on the freshest tyres, and he knows that he needs to

clear the Red Bulls as quickly as possible if he will have a chance of

beating Hamilton to the Grand Prix win. All of them are looking at

maybe an opportunity to do something here. Just look at the tire debris

running off-line. It makes it increasingly difficult to effect a

pass because there are marbles on the surface of your tired before the

braking zone. Often we see accidents occurring because the cars

are so close to one another but so far, so good. -- your tyres. Right

behind Jean-Eric Vergne is Kevin Magnussen, and he has a look down

the inside but he cannot do that. It is too tight into the chicane but

Ricciardo has been told, go crazy, it might be a long stint. But it

only might be, because they are not clear they can make it to the end on

this set of tyres. That is the? Lewis Hamilton is due another pit

stop. In the the moment in seventh place. Magnusson is due another pit

stop. You can see how close they are at this stage. Raikkonen flashes

through in eighth position. He had a reliability problem in qualifying

and it cost him dear at that he was matching Alonso for pace through Q1

and through Q2. How much are they dropping to Hamilton? They are

losing massively to Lewis Hamilton upfront. He is on schedule, then, to

be able to pull out the gap. And do exactly what Vettel did last year,

making up a sufficient lead so as not to have to worry about it.

Daniil Kvyat. He has Hulkenberg behind it. RADIO: The only way to

make it work now is to get the tyre to the end. We want to try to take

this tyre set to the end. On board with Sebastian Vettel. We have three

tyres and we are trying to make it to the end. I do not think that is

possible. We think if you pits here it will take too many cars. Bunching

up behind the safety car means that you have a lot of cars, it is not

like normally at this stage of the race, there would be gaps that you

could get into. It could be a double long finish for cyber. Sutil has

been in the wars and in the end they did not take any one action for that

penalty, the incident with Sergio Perez. Both sour buts are out of the

Grand Prix. -- Saubers. We are targeting seven laps on this tyre.

That sounds risky weather safety car. We will be straight in in that

case. If there was a safety car, they would be straight in. -- with

at safety car. Not a bad stop. Just a fraction slower. 4.3 seconds,

definitely not the best. Matter is in fifth and Bottas in -- Massa is

in fifth place. Bottas is in sixth. They could not take advantage.

Jenson Button is currently running in seventh but he could move up to

fifth if the Williams have to make a pit stop to change onto another set

of tyres. In comes the other Toro Rosso Jean-Eric Vergne. That is all

OK. We will see where this brings him out but it has dropped them out

of the points. Sergio Perez comes in in the Force India. They will be on

fresh tyres. Perhaps more so than those around them when they we join

the race. Let's see what they can do. Sergio Perez afternoon Williams.

They felt they needed to get another set of tyres. You do wonder how on

earth Williams are going to get to the end. Let's wait and find out.

Plenty of time to go. There is still half an hour remaining. We still

have 16 laps to go. It looks as though we will just make the time.

The gaps upfront are interesting, now Alonso is beginning to close up

to Daniel Ricciardo. We wondered if Alonso was biding his time,

definitely over the past few laps you can see that he has been gaining

on Ricardo, nine tenths, and only a 10th on the last lap, Ricciardo

responding to that. Not quite within BRS range but beginning to apply

pressure now. -- DRS. Through one of the chicanes. Hamilton needs another

few laps do have enough time to clear Alonso so that is why he is

still being left out there, Hamilton needs to get in the quick laps but

he is doing it. Two seconds faster than Vettel. Hamilton has a 17

second lead. Over the second placed man since the safety car came out,

that is astonishing pace from Hamilton. Delivering what he needed

to. The team gave him the information and he completely

understood. Magnusson makes a pit stop, he has had the fastest pit

stop out of the last Grands Prix. Kevin Magnussen will be behind Vira,

I think. Marcus Ericsson has been lapped, of course. Though

effectively there is still a race going on, he is in front of Kvyat.

They were together at the start on the fifth row and now pretty close

together in the closing stages. On board with Lewis Hamilton, expecting

the pit stop? RADIO: You need to stop me soon, my tyres are going

off. I told you. In the mode five, you are still pulling the gap. They

have to be careful. Probably better to play safe, get him in. He would

have such an advantage if he has 2 overtake. One thing to be behind two

Red Bull 's, but that is the issue. Currently Alonso on the cusp at 28

seconds. If they can get that stop done, out in front, they will be on

the back of them. I do not think Alonso can respond. Still very

close, this group. Hulkenberg in ninth, bit of a gap back behind.

Grosjean currently in 11th place. Ricciardo 27 seconds behind,

presuming they do a perfect pit stop they might get there. He must be

nervous, remember the famous Chinese Grand Prix when they left him out a

long time and he ended up going off. I know the conditions were very

different but that might be running through his mind. You do not want to

be running too much risk, running through the tread pattern. That was

an intermediate, he went into the gravel. Much to the frustration of

everybody he sat their beached. He does not want to repeat that kind of

performance. Meanwhile, Ricciardo just 2.7 seconds behind. This group

dicing the sixth place. Believe the lights in Singapore. Hamilton has

that gap to 25 seconds, 28 seconds, Ricciardo. The pressure on the team

to make perfect stops. RADIO: Great lap, if you do 53.5 next lap, we

will take it. My right rear is getting seriously worn. I am not

sure if these things are going to explode. He is worried. I am not

laughing because I think it is not accurate but his voice is so calm

when he says that. I would have more nervousness in my voice if I thought

that was going to happen. Anything to stop him just coming in any way?

Of course he could but you trust in your team as an interaction. That is

why I think the radio calls is an intrinsic part of modern racing.

Should be enough, he has made it this far. But assuming the pit stop

goes to plan he will come out in front of Alonso. Will he beat the

Red Bulls out, that will be more marginal? Now then, is it enough to

get out in front of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo? There he is in

the background. Is it going to be" Mike still has to come through the

exit, into the lead of the race goes Sebastian Vettel? But has he done

enough to stay in front of Ricciardo? On a fresh set of tyres,

such an advantage now. Lewis Hamilton into second place, but on a

fresh set of tyres. Chasing after the three-time winner here in

Difficult to imagine he has, he does not have the speed advantage in a

straight line or the grip. We know the Red Bull has been performing

well in the tighter sections but his tyres are well worn. Still a great

race going on the second and third place. Red Bull trying to make it a

double podium this year. They have not done that this season. They are

being caught by Alonso. Alonso will fight to the very last lap. Three

manufacturers running this close, this late. They have all had the

opportunity to make their decisions, this is where they have ended up at

the end of this Grand Prix. Grand Strand finished, you can see the

reaction from the grandstands as they know they have a real race on

their hands. Hamilton closing so quickly, an brand-new tyres. Sizing

him up. In the mirrors. The racing driver equivalent of going "Boo! "

The response from the crowd as they see this developing. Hamilton with

the advantage. Into the pits, presumably, this is Ricciardo? Yes.

Maybe doing the dummy. They did not bring in in, thinking about it.

Still Hamilton on the charge. Surely he will be passing that pretty

quickly. Into seven, I do not know how he will be able to defend. He

just does not have the straight line speed. RADIO: Shut down, shut down.

We are looking at it, Jensen. Hamilton has got past Sebastian

Vettel, he tried to make life difficult but there was no way to

prevent the Mercedes coming through. Jenson Button is out. Writes down

the order, Button. He was on for some useful points. He is at the

side of the track. Will they be able to recover that without the safety

car? Holder as long as he is in neutral they will be able to pull it

back. Let's watch this, coming through 13. Excuse me, 11 and 12,

just a complete electrical failure, over the bridge. Down towards 13.

Reset said, the dashboard comes back to life. Let's see what happened

on-board Jean-Eric Vergne. That is in the turn seven. Being

investigated the track limits. He has gone beyond, being given a 5

second stop-go penalty, so Maldonado is brought back onto the cusp. Will

he be able to scrape a point? He still needs to get one more person.

Peres has moved past Maldonado now in the 11th position. Alonso

catching up. Red Bull have to think about this. Just under six minutes

to go, four laps to go, which will come first? We will wait and see.

Alonso running out of time. Is Rick Yardy, I would love to know what the

messages are to the drivers. Is Ricciardo being told to defend?

Don't go after your team-mate? He would have every reason to be upset

about that when he is the man leading their challenge in the

championship for the drivers. Interesting times. Maybe Red Bull

staying quiet and letting them get on with it. As much as Daniel has

the chance for the Drivers' Championship, Sebastian has had his

fair share of problems and I would be very surprised if there was any

team orders on this. They have to go and earn this position. Alonso not

showing the chance to get through just yet. They are all in the RS --

DRS zone. Massa has done an amazing 35 laps on this soft tyre. Still a

couple more to go, can he hold it together? Pace holding up reasonably

well. He has 2 stay ahead of this group. Massa, sorry, not this group.

Massa 12 seconds ahead of his team-mate. Fighting over the podium

finishes. Little lock-up from Sebastian Vettel. Gathered its

together nicely. Of course it only puts a bit more way through a tyre

that has already done a lot of mileage. -- wearing. Blue lights and

blue flags being held out the Chilton, I think. They are about to

catch him in the Marussia. Bianchi is 0.7 behind Marcus Ericsson.

Caterham beating Marussia by 0.7 seconds. They will not be catching

the leaders. That is the 15th position, Marcus Ericsson with a

good race so far. The nice sound of the turbo as they break the Turn 1.

The graphics say three lamps but I can tell you it will be less than

that. -- brake. Three minutes before the two-hour mark, we will see the

chequered flag just before the designated turn. Did Vergne get past

Hulkenberg? I think he did, good, aggressive racing, but he has a 5

second penalty so he will not actually finish ahead of Vergne when

the sorting out is done. Five seconds stop- go, he has to come

into the pits. It is not time added on or am I getting it wrong question

mark it will be added afterwards, I think. Chilton getting out of the

way. You stop and go if you have a pit stop otherwise you get it added

on afterwards. Kevin Magnussen on the points. Only half a second

behind Hulkenberg, we might see, that is different. We will take

another look at that in a minute. Now, Vergne, down the inside, of

Kimi Raikkonen. Great pass. On a charge on these tyres fresher than

those around him. Five second penalty but if he can go up the road

and get five seconds over Valtteri Bottas, then Raikkonen looking for

the chance to come through Azore. Great result for their macro if he

can get five seconds ahead of that we got us. He could be in sixth

placed to match his best result. Force Indias coming together

virtually. Where is Kevin Magnussen? He has dropped back a little bit.

Has he got a problem? He has been passed by Peres. Both McLarens in

trouble, not likely to score today but Force India will, unless they

take each other off? We have seen them make contact once already this

week in Hungary. They do not need that again now, really. Down the

inside, an different tyres, Hulkenberg has to give way. Peres on

the super-soft tyres, he Hulkenberg has to give way. Peres on

laps, but the points are crucial for the team. Peres into ninth place.

Looking at the clock. Counting down. Come to a time to raise, it will be

chequered flag next time round. Hamilton leading this Grand Prix. --

timed race. Not able to do anything about the Red Bull. On the last lap,

move for surgery -- Sergio Perez question my Raikkonen had to defend,

there will be an opportunity. Almost squeezed out of the way by Kimi

Raikkonen. That was absolutely crucial, he just went too early,

that gave Raikkonen the chance to close the door. Sergio Perez still

hunting after that great run in Italy last time, beating Button. Can

he find a way past Kimi Raikkonen. Raikkonen struggling for grip. Lewis

Hamilton meanwhile in the last part of the Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton

comes through the final corners in Singapore, back-to-back victories,

Hamilton wins the Singapore Grand Prix, the fireworks go off and he

has taken his second ever when in Singapore. What a result for him on

a day that he now takes the World Championship lead as well. Second

place goes to Sebastian Vettel, three times a winner in the last

three years and now takes second. Ricciardo in third. Sergio Perez

gaining another place. He got past Raikkonen and voucher got past

Raikkonen and vowed to has lost massively, holding on for so long

but now dropping down the order. -- Bottas. The tyres have gone. They

asked the too much, Williams. Isa has finished in fifth place, so he

has driven brilliantly, 38 laps, while the soft in a mass, one of the

drives of the day, sixth placed the Jean-Eric Vergne.

Peres recovers. Jean-Eric Vergne is more than five seconds ahead.

Magnusson takes the final point in 10th. Lewis Hamilton takes his 29th

career win. What a way to do it. RADIO: Nice work, Lewis. Great

stuff. Keep the revs up. Fantastic job this weekend, guys, thank you so

much for your hard work, it is starting to pay off. It is his

seventh win this year versus Quattro now for Rosberg. It puts him into a

3-point World Championship lead. -- four now. Well done, nice job, you

made that stint well. Good job, obviously. We got the maximum there

was any way. I did not have any tyres left but I did everything I

could. It is nice to see Vettel coming across to congratulate

Hamilton. These are the results of the Singapore Grand Prix. A double

podium for Red Bull Racing. They did it in Canada. A great drive from

Sergio Perez towards the end. Maldonado again fails to score

points and so does his team-mate, Grosjean, in the Lotus. Ericsson

beats the Marussias here. The Swedish driver will be delighted

with that. It is time to enjoy the moment for

Lewis Hamilton. Celebrating victory and celebrating a championship lead.

And looking forward to one of his favourite tracks on the calendar,

Japan. He has never won there, he has won at Fuji. He goes there as

the World Championship leader. Victory in Japan would be very sweet

indeed. What a hugely successful Singapore weekend.

Well, Lewis Hamilton championship leader, what a wonderful drive

today. You sounded quite nervous towards the end, were you worried

that it was a big gamble? I was just not quite aware of what was going

on, I could see the guys behind me. And there was a safety car and I was

on the option tyres. I knew that there was 12 laps to go, I was

thinking this is the time to pit. If the safety car comes out it could

have caught me out. The guys had it under control and we got the tyres,

and I had to do out with a bit of fighting. The pit stop was crucial,

you knew that it would be close, what was on your mind? I was pretty

relaxed, to be honest. I think the guys... I had great confidence in

the guys. We had great pit stops and today I was focusing on stopping in

the perfect spot, not too long, not too short. I saw Vettel coming past

when I came out which was surprising because I had so much pace today. I

should have always come out ahead but there was a safety car. I did

not even see Daniel and all of a sudden he was in my mirrors. If you

watch really closely, I just went for it. This felt really tight. That

was close to the wall! I was concerned when you missed the window

of stopping in the safety car, did it ever come into your mind to do

the tyre stop because you had to change towards the end of the race?

I was thinking that, but you really have to have one with a buzzing

confidence in your team and we have a great strategy. I really believe

in them. When they tell me one thing, they have a much better

perspective of what is going on in the race, so that was my thought

process, I was like, these guys will lead me to the win. Ultimate trust

in the team that you showed on the team radio, and you are now leading

the team championship by three points. How does it feel? I am not

really thinking about it, to be honest. I feel like I am still

hunting, still catching up. We have had quite a few DNFs. And today has

shown that we still have some areas to improve. We have an incredible

group of guys at the factory who I know we'll be working hard to make

sure this does not happen again. What happened to Niko's car. All I

can do is repeat what I did this last weekend, we are just putting in

the best time is possible and doing our best. Dad was looking very proud

on the podium, have you spoken to him? I just saw him for a second. It

was great to have him and my stepmum here, and the support from my family

is amazing. Generally just having positive energy around me has been

incredible, and thanks to a lot of the British fans in the grandstand,

with the British flag, that is awesome. You are going to Japan

next? I have not won there. You have one at Fuji. I have a serious target

there. Jenson Button won there one year, so I had the car to win and I

did not. I have another tune itty next week. -- I have an opportunity.

Daniel Ricciardo, congratulations, back on the podium. What a race. It

seems like you had problems all the way through. Yes, I do not want to

tell you a sad story but we had a few issues. We had a bit going on

and unfortunately we could not clear it. For example in Budapest we had

issues in the middle of the race with losing power. Two or three laps

we were able to clear it and fix it. Today it stayed with us for most of

the race. It made life a bit tricky, losing time on the straights and

then having to work for it on the corners, which was fine until the

tyres obviously go and then you are taking more energy from it. Let's go

live to the start because that is where it started to go wrong! You

will not be able to hear the sound but it sounds as though you are

bogged down slightly. It felt like that. It stopped pulling and we lost

a bit of power. It was, obviously, I would have loved to get a good start

but it was not to be today. What about Alonso, he did not break the

first corner? Should he have given you the place? Let's have a look. It

is questionable, isn't it? He was pretty racy. Very gentleman like. I

cannot remember anyone being so polite as you. Would you go to the

stewards and ask them to give you their understanding of what is going

on. If that was Monaco he would have gone into the wall, so I guess it is

in issue with all of these safety run-offs. The pros are that they

work well for safety and we are all for that, but it allows errors and

certain questionable things to step into play. It is a tough one. I

personally am not a massive fan of all of the big run-offs, but for

safety reasons it is worthwhile. What you have done today is close

the gap to the front man Lewis Hamilton. That wash or aim. It was a

good day at the office. -- that was your aim. Let's hear now Sebastien.

We got it wrong when Fernando undercut us. We tried to mirror him

from their with the risk of the safety car which came. It is not

great. Nice to be back on the podium and tasting champagne again?

driving your heart out against the odds. Thanks. It was a really good

race and I am happy for everyone in the team and myself, yesterday in

qualifying I made a mistake and that is not where I should have started

today so I apologise to the team and I said I would make it up today in

the race and they gave me a great car the whole weekend. So here we

are. We have had two penalties, the first one was a bit of a mistake.

The second one, we did not get any room. Anyway, that gave me more

hunger to go and get the points at the end. Talk us three where you

were at in your mind. The first one here was down into Turn 1. -- talk

us through it. I went to pass him and I had cold tyres and I could

not... This is the incident with Maldonado. He did not leave me any

room, basically. I do not understand the penalty. Would you talk to the

stewards about that? I will talk to them because they gave us the right

to fight and by always giving penalties this way, there is no way

we can fight so it is a shame. A great comeback in the end. You would

have loved the racing element. This was epic for us watching, we saw all

of these lunges that you are making, trying to figure out how you could
