Hello and, after four fly away races, the Formula One paddock is | :01:06. | :01:12.
firmly parked in Barcelona. Welcome to qualifying from the Circuit de | :01:13. | :01:14.
Catalunya for the Spanish Grand Prix, and today we will start the | :01:15. | :01:19.
show with a tribute to Ayrton Senna. May the 1st mark the 20th | :01:20. | :01:24.
anniversary of his death, the desperately sad weekend in a mother. | :01:25. | :01:29.
Eddie Jordan returned to the track to reflect on the loss of a friend | :01:30. | :01:33.
and colleague and the weekend that changed Formula One. | :01:34. | :01:40.
The heart of Formula One, a place we love, but also a place with painful | :01:41. | :01:49.
memories. There are days that leaves scars. It began here. Friday | :01:50. | :01:55.
practice, Rubens Barrichello, my driver, had a most appalling | :01:56. | :02:02.
accident at 160 mph. He was unconscious but escaped with nothing | :02:03. | :02:07.
more than a broken nose. That was modern Formula One. Big accident, no | :02:08. | :02:12.
harm done! But the next day, in qualifying, that is when it all | :02:13. | :02:20.
changed. Imola lost control at 190 mph and went straight into a | :02:21. | :02:24.
concrete barrier which took his life. -- Ratzenburger. Saturday | :02:25. | :02:31.
turned agonisingly into Sunday, made her first 1994. One of the worlds | :02:32. | :02:39.
greatest motor racing drivers has died after a crash at the San Reno | :02:40. | :02:48.
Grand Prix... He was 34. He was a hero, the ultimate racing driver, | :02:49. | :02:52.
right up to the moment that he lost his life. It was shocking that it | :02:53. | :02:58.
was him, because it is like the sun falling from the sky. He was like | :02:59. | :03:03.
above everything. The body arrived at the airport in the morning... He | :03:04. | :03:09.
was the pride of his country and is being mourned as such. It was like a | :03:10. | :03:19.
state funeral. You could see what it meant for the whole country. If he | :03:20. | :03:22.
had known how has life would unfold, he wouldn't have changed | :03:23. | :03:28.
anything. I start with four years old in go-kart, and I needed to get | :03:29. | :03:38.
to Formula One. I first came across Ayrton Senna at the beginning of | :03:39. | :03:42.
1982. I offered him a drive in our Formula 3 car. I still have the | :03:43. | :03:47.
sheet from the test day, 54.07, unbelievably fast times. I tried so | :03:48. | :03:52.
hard to sign him for the following year. Sadly that wasn't to happen. | :03:53. | :04:01.
He had won every championship that he entered, and then he moved up to | :04:02. | :04:07.
F3 and he just strolled around the place. Taking the chequered flag, | :04:08. | :04:13.
Ayrton Senna wins for the ten season, and he is naturally | :04:14. | :04:17.
overjoyed... I offered to pay for his career in return for an option. | :04:18. | :04:21.
I was somewhat surprised when he said no. We are talking about | :04:22. | :04:28.
driving in Formula One, I was pretty excited, I knew he was a good | :04:29. | :04:32.
prospect. I won't pretend I knew how good. When it is wet, it equalises | :04:33. | :04:43.
the field, and that was a notoriously terrible car to drive. | :04:44. | :04:47.
The wet is where the talent shows, and the Senate is very talented | :04:48. | :04:51.
indeed. It goes without saying that he can drive well, but it is about | :04:52. | :04:57.
what they can add to that. He had this in aid ability to know what is | :04:58. | :05:05.
going on. He dragged that car up the grid into second. He will | :05:06. | :05:13.
undoubtedly be a world champion of the future. Then he was gone to | :05:14. | :05:19.
Lotus. Now he could compete with the best. This usually totally | :05:20. | :05:26.
unflappable Brazilian is, for once, absolutely beside himself! Soon he | :05:27. | :05:29.
was changing team colours again into the red and white of McLaren. He was | :05:30. | :05:37.
passionate about driving, he derived more pleasure from it than any | :05:38. | :05:44.
driver I knew. He explained that he did it with a slower motion than the | :05:45. | :05:49.
rest of us, he had more time to do every corner with perfection. He was | :05:50. | :05:54.
very, very special behind the wheel, and he wasn't aggressive with the | :05:55. | :05:59.
wheel at all. He just knew how to carry the momentum through the | :06:00. | :06:05.
corner. On board with him through Monaco, things like that, truly | :06:06. | :06:07.
special things to watch. Out of the corner, the engine did | :06:08. | :06:27.
not feel good, so we changed the mixture, a little bit richer, and | :06:28. | :06:31.
you could see that he felt an improvement. I tried even a step | :06:32. | :06:37.
more and it was better. I couldn't change one of these in the lap, and | :06:38. | :06:42.
he was putting it on pole position. This is why he was better than all | :06:43. | :06:48.
of us. The second chicane is kind of bumpy. He was the first guy I met | :06:49. | :06:56.
who wasn't using 100% of his mental capacity to drive the car. There was | :06:57. | :07:01.
this capacity that allowed him to analyse and tell you what he thought | :07:02. | :07:05.
was going on that allowed you to try and make the car better. It really | :07:06. | :07:14.
was something special. He had all these sheets of every lap, he was | :07:15. | :07:20.
going after the race, going through every lap of every tribe. With | :07:21. | :07:27.
McLaren for six years, he was in a dominant period, bearing in mind we | :07:28. | :07:34.
have highly dominant -- talented drivers. | :07:35. | :07:52.
Ayrton Senna was such an icon in our sport, and I certainly felt that. So | :07:53. | :08:00.
much so that I offered him 50% of Jordan Grand Prix free of charge to | :08:01. | :08:04.
come and join me, because I believed, truthfully, that with him | :08:05. | :08:08.
by my side, it would be a much stronger team, more professional, | :08:09. | :08:12.
more successful and much better off financially. He was the partner I | :08:13. | :08:18.
desperately needed. In his early years in Formula 3, I've seen the | :08:19. | :08:22.
ruthlessness in Ayrton. No question he felt he had a God-given right to | :08:23. | :08:27.
win. Win at all costs, a reckless self belief. Alain Prost takes the | :08:28. | :08:35.
lead, he has taken the advantage, Senna is trying to go through on the | :08:36. | :08:39.
inside, and it has happened immediately, this is amazing! | :08:40. | :08:45.
Ayrton has a small problem. He thinks that he can't kill himself, | :08:46. | :08:51.
because he believes in God, and I think it is very dangerous. He was | :08:52. | :08:56.
an animal in the car, fighting, people say he was reckless, | :08:57. | :09:02.
dangerous or whatever. You either commit yourself as a professional | :09:03. | :09:06.
racing driver with a desire to win races, all you come second, third or | :09:07. | :09:12.
fifth. And I have no desire to come third or fifth. I race to win. He | :09:13. | :09:18.
was very intelligent, and inside he was tough. Very emotional Latin, the | :09:19. | :09:27.
emotion in the car is so strong, and then on the other side he was very | :09:28. | :09:31.
philosophical, very quiet, very nice, very gentle. 1992, Spa. Ayrton | :09:32. | :09:43.
risks his life, stops and runs across the track, turning of the | :09:44. | :09:46.
engine to prevent a fire, Eric says it saved his life. The cruel Senna, | :09:47. | :09:55.
the compassionate Ayrton. I saw the compassionate man, the man with a | :09:56. | :09:59.
huge amount of presence when he walked in the door. You know, when | :10:00. | :10:03.
Ayrton walked in, you knew he was there. He was an engaging guy to | :10:04. | :10:10.
talk to. Before qualifying, he used to read a couple of lines from the | :10:11. | :10:20.
Bible. I was reading playboy, I would say, do you want to come over | :10:21. | :10:27.
and read a little bit of Playboy? I must have been reading the wrong | :10:28. | :10:35.
stuff! By 1991, he was the youngest ever three-time world champion, but | :10:36. | :10:39.
then two years without success, he was on the move again, to the now | :10:40. | :10:44.
successful Williams team. Unfortunately, the Williams of that | :10:45. | :10:54.
era wasn't a very good car, and Ayrton's determination and ability | :10:55. | :11:00.
meant he was driving that car harder than it was capable of. Senna has | :11:01. | :11:08.
lasted. He has pushed himself to a mistake. -- lost it. | :11:09. | :11:14.
And so we come back here, Imola. May the 1st 1994. | :11:15. | :11:30.
He was a worried man, certainly, going into that Imola weekend. There | :11:31. | :11:37.
was a lot going on. Roland's accident was something deeply | :11:38. | :11:45.
upsetting. He wasn't so happy, he was talking to the GPDA all the | :11:46. | :11:50.
time, saying that safety has to grow and this and that. He was far more | :11:51. | :11:59.
quiet than normal. You could see he was thinking all the time. I | :12:00. | :12:06.
remember, on Sunday, walking to the drivers' briefing, and he said, next | :12:07. | :12:12.
week we need to talk about improving safety. It is warm, track conditions | :12:13. | :12:18.
are ideal, and no disguising the fact that after two none finishes | :12:19. | :12:22.
today is the day that Ayrton Senna must make his first move in this | :12:23. | :12:27.
1994 world championship. -- non-finishers. Go! And Senna pulls | :12:28. | :12:34.
away... On the flag drops, he is completely focused. I don't think | :12:35. | :12:39.
any of that background stuff contributed to how he drove the car. | :12:40. | :12:48.
Senna, my goodness! What on earth happened there?! I was coming out of | :12:49. | :12:56.
the corner, he was crashing into the wall, and I looked, and I thought, | :12:57. | :13:04.
it is OK. I saw the accident, I knew it was a bad accident, but he will | :13:05. | :13:10.
be OK. We couldn't see very much, it's getting so many conflicting | :13:11. | :13:16.
messages. All I can remember is the noise. I had this feeling that his | :13:17. | :13:32.
soul was going out. To this day, such a loss. Such a waste. | :13:33. | :13:39.
A measure of the man - after the impact here, they found in his car | :13:40. | :13:50.
and Austrian flag. He was going to wave it for Roland Ratzenburger at | :13:51. | :13:52.
the end of the race. He certainly was a genius. But | :13:53. | :14:04.
that's genius died here at Imola on the first weekend of May 1994. Yes, | :14:05. | :14:09.
there are places and dates that leave a scar. | :14:10. | :14:22.
?LINEBREAK It is nice, also, it makes me proud, a little bit, I must | :14:23. | :14:42.
say. He was a Superman, superdedicated to | :14:43. | :14:47.
his family, a super driver and a super friend. | :14:48. | :14:53.
He was definitely up will in the very top bracket of the very top | :14:54. | :14:59.
drivers in the history of modern Formula One. | :15:00. | :15:04.
If not the greatest, then then very arguably one of the greatest. | :15:05. | :15:12.
I will never know, wouldn't it be great to get all these guys | :15:13. | :15:16.
together, and have a big race in heaven, maybe. | :15:17. | :15:24.
All the guys, including Michael Schumacher, Vettel, there was | :15:25. | :15:32.
another layer, and there was just one guy and that was Ayrton Senna. | :15:33. | :15:44.
Such powerful images and thought provoking comments. A wonderful | :15:45. | :15:50.
piece there on Ayrton Senna, and one of them said he was better than the | :15:51. | :15:55.
rest. Eddie, difficult for you to watch that, do you agree? He was | :15:56. | :16:00.
perfect. That was a really nice piece. Very well made. Very | :16:01. | :16:05.
sensitive and I think everyone said how they felt. Gerhard was amazing, | :16:06. | :16:12.
he was one step above. It was a desperately tragic weekend all | :16:13. | :16:15.
round, which you covered there, but losing Rowland as well, who you knew | :16:16. | :16:19.
very well. Rowland came in a different way, he was not the Meg | :16:20. | :16:25.
star that air on the was and every step air on the took it was | :16:26. | :16:29.
calculated. Rowland had been in Japan, he had been a hard-working | :16:30. | :16:33.
professional young driver, Austrian, hugely well liked in the paddock and | :16:34. | :16:39.
amazing, the girls adored him, he was so good looking. Everyone's | :16:40. | :16:45.
dream is to come Formula One if they want to become a racing driving | :16:46. | :16:49.
driver and Roland Ratzenberger was taken the day before. When I | :16:50. | :16:53.
mentioned about the flag in air on the's car, that was the measure of | :16:54. | :16:57.
him but the respect he had for Roland Ratzenberger who was a great | :16:58. | :17:00.
talent and would have gone on to good things I believe. David, Eddie | :17:01. | :17:06.
saying all drivers want to be in Formula One. The impact of Ayrton | :17:07. | :17:11.
Senna's death had an impact on you It is 20 years ago I made my debut | :17:12. | :17:15.
here in Barcelona, the team race with only one car in Monaco which | :17:16. | :17:26.
was the following after it. Mola. Damon went on to win the Spanish | :17:27. | :17:35.
Grand Prix, there was a huge out pouring of emotion that weekend. It | :17:36. | :17:38.
must have been really difficult, and especially for you, I would have | :17:39. | :17:42.
thought. It changed the weekend. It changed Formula One forever in terms | :17:43. | :17:47.
of safety as well. We were all for the right reasons everyone kept | :17:48. | :17:52.
quiet but I remember going within a couple of race, Max Mosley was | :17:53. | :17:56.
dogmatic about it, this is what you will do, to change, higher cockpit, | :17:57. | :18:01.
making sure deflection, what happened with the wheel and tethers | :18:02. | :18:05.
and thing, I think was all positive because it has given him, us the | :18:06. | :18:09.
longevity, you can never be sure in this business but we have had a long | :18:10. | :18:14.
run of non-fatalities in the sport, and a lot of that is the FIA, a lot | :18:15. | :18:21.
is to Max Mosley. As a result of the sad passing of Roland Ratzenberger | :18:22. | :18:24.
and Ayrton Senna, they paid the price. The ultimate price. 20 years | :18:25. | :18:29.
ago of course on May 1st. May I say welcome back, it very nice to have | :18:30. | :18:33.
him back on screen, isn't it. The Eddie. Loads has been going on of | :18:34. | :18:36.
course in Formula One, let us catch up with the news now, with Lee. | :18:37. | :18:43.
Lewis Hamilton has won three out of the four Grand Prix. He is not worry | :18:44. | :18:51.
about the other teams, he says Mercedes is doing everything to win | :18:52. | :18:55.
both Championships We will throw the bathtub. We will keep pushing and | :18:56. | :19:01.
try to improve, and do better, but, yeah, whatever they give we will | :19:02. | :19:05.
give back just as much if not more. We want that competition, we want | :19:06. | :19:09.
people to be pushing and we want to be able to fight peep. Despite his | :19:10. | :19:13.
race wins it is his team-mate Rosberg who sits at the top of the | :19:14. | :19:17.
Championship. He is not ready to hand over that top spot I need to | :19:18. | :19:21.
change the momentum round, he has had the right momentum to him, and | :19:22. | :19:27.
just like last year, it went to and from us, I need to change it round | :19:28. | :19:30.
and bring it bag on my side and get the win. At the end of last season | :19:31. | :19:36.
Fernando Alonso said Sebastian Vettel would be measured when he has | :19:37. | :19:39.
the same car as everyone else and not driving a dominating car. Now, | :19:40. | :19:44.
after four tricky races for German Alonso has been giving his opinion | :19:45. | :19:50.
again. It has not empressed people like he did in the past, you know, I | :19:51. | :19:57.
think this year -- impressed. In the four race, three or four, Ricciardo | :19:58. | :20:04.
was quicker than Sebastian, that was a surprise for everybody and also | :20:05. | :20:08.
for him I guess. Alonso hasn't won a race since this one last season. | :20:09. | :20:13.
Vettel's win was this year but his week hasn't got off to a good start. | :20:14. | :20:18.
Yesterday he only managed four laps before an electrical failure meant | :20:19. | :20:22.
he couldn't run any more. The chassis, we had to change it. | :20:23. | :20:26.
Couldn't go out again, a lost a day but should be fine. Jenson Button's | :20:27. | :20:31.
McLaren better be quicker than in China, there is no way he wants to | :20:32. | :20:36.
finish outside of the top ten. We have up grades, most cars do, but we | :20:37. | :20:40.
never know how much. Last rate was a tough one for us, even without up | :20:41. | :20:44.
grades, it would be quicker because of the lay out of the circuit. We | :20:45. | :20:48.
have hope we make a slight improvement. I don't want to finish | :20:49. | :20:55.
11th again. The trial of Bernie Ecclestone got under way. In the | :20:56. | :20:59.
meantime, it seems that Ecclestone has done a race in Azerbaijan, it is | :21:00. | :21:04.
expected to be on the calendar next season or in 20166789 Azerbaijan, | :21:05. | :21:09.
what do you any? Will it happen? I think it is a race too many, | :21:10. | :21:14.
perhaps, and you know, quick succession of new race, I think we | :21:15. | :21:18.
need to think carefully about Abba January when it comes, financially | :21:19. | :21:22.
fine but I would prefer to be concentrating efforts to get into | :21:23. | :21:27.
New York or somewhere like that which had greater commercial | :21:28. | :21:31.
opportunity, that is my view. Let us wait to see. Christian Horner has | :21:32. | :21:34.
managed to join us. Thank you. We heard in the news there, that Seb is | :21:35. | :21:39.
having a hard time, we know he has had a hard time this season. What | :21:40. | :21:44.
seems to be the trouble? Daniil is handling the car well. Is it | :21:45. | :21:49.
anything the way with Sebastian join drives the car It is character | :21:50. | :21:54.
building. He hasn't had the feel for the car for the way he drives it. It | :21:55. | :21:58.
is not talking the way he wants it. A lot is to do with the engine, the | :21:59. | :22:02.
way it is performing under braking, we have made changes I think are | :22:03. | :22:07.
going to help. Hopefully, despite missing yesterday, hopefully he can | :22:08. | :22:11.
have a strong day. How much of that you mention about braking, how much | :22:12. | :22:15.
is that because of the recoverable part of the energies, you are | :22:16. | :22:21.
harvesting 160 Haass power, is that what is giving the difficulty? That | :22:22. | :22:25.
is what is giving him the seven say, it is not consistent through the | :22:26. | :22:30.
braking zone. He delivers his lap time on the corner, when the car is | :22:31. | :22:33.
not giving him the signals he is used to or wanting, that is | :22:34. | :22:42.
unsettling him. You end up using the tyre more. You said about the | :22:43. | :22:47.
engine, I want to pick that up. How much of a problem to you at Red Bull | :22:48. | :22:51.
is the fact that other teams are not paying their bills at Renault, how | :22:52. | :22:55.
is that affected the development that could be going to you, except | :22:56. | :23:00.
it is costing the team money? Hopefully nothing. We had a meeting | :23:01. | :23:04.
at the beginning of the year. They said rest assure, representative foe | :23:05. | :23:08.
are in this to compete. To challenge Mercedes and to win, and you know, | :23:09. | :23:14.
so we have been assured that you know, other customers not paying | :23:15. | :23:18.
their way won't affect development or performance in in way. Do you | :23:19. | :23:21.
feel as though the changes you were talking about will make a step | :23:22. | :23:25.
towards a step closer to Mercedes this weekend, or are we still going | :23:26. | :23:30.
to have to wait longer? We are still a long way away. Lewis looked | :23:31. | :23:35.
competitive yesterday. He looked as though he has Nico covered. Were | :23:36. | :23:39.
probably three-quarters of a second off their pace. Things can change | :23:40. | :23:43.
round quickly and if we can unleash performance, unleash a bit of | :23:44. | :23:46.
potential from the car as well, and Sebastian gets back in form, then, | :23:47. | :23:50.
yes, we can hopefully take the fight to them. Thank you very much. Let us | :23:51. | :23:55.
look at the Championship there, and see where Sebastian is sitting on | :23:56. | :23:59.
that table. So after four races, coming into the Spanish Grand Prix. | :24:00. | :24:02.
Sebastian Vettel is in fifth. Mercedes Rosberg heads the table | :24:03. | :24:16.
with Lewis Hamilton fast closing the gap. Four points now the difference. | :24:17. | :24:20.
Fernando Alonso is the best of the rest in third, and Nico Hulkenberg | :24:21. | :24:26.
is a very credible fourth. Red Bull are up to second in the Constructors | :24:27. | :24:30.
Championship with Force India three points behind in third. With four | :24:31. | :24:34.
straight victories Mercedes are definitely the team to beat. | :24:35. | :24:42.
Talks of Mercedes then, do you think they can maintain the momentum, are | :24:43. | :24:46.
they going to dominate all season? Is anyone going to catch them? I | :24:47. | :24:52.
don't want to put out signals but there are very few teams who can | :24:53. | :24:55.
match them. They have a wonderful engine, they have a great team, this | :24:56. | :24:59.
is not just the start of the year, they set their stall out a | :25:00. | :25:02.
year-and-a-half ago, that was started by trying to lure and | :25:03. | :25:07.
convince Lewis Hamilton to come to their team. They were successful, | :25:08. | :25:10.
they are getting the reward for it now We have had a break since China, | :25:11. | :25:15.
two effectively three week, who do you think that will benefitted most? | :25:16. | :25:22.
In real terms the small teams more, because the logistics of getting | :25:23. | :25:25.
from their factories to hear, the big teams are geared up in the same | :25:26. | :25:32.
way as Barcelona, it becomes more cost effective drivering the up | :25:33. | :25:35.
grades you have to these European race, so just the way Formula One | :25:36. | :25:39.
operates, the large teams, it doesn't matter where in the world | :25:40. | :25:42.
they are having the race, you know, you have to physically manufacture | :25:43. | :25:45.
the part and then it a question of how long does it take to fly to it | :25:46. | :25:50.
the race track. We have lots of #u7 dates here. Alan can tell us more. | :25:51. | :25:55.
Barcelona, nay started the European season in a place where teams have | :25:56. | :25:58.
brought all of their up grades, this season is no exception, we start off | :25:59. | :26:02.
with Ferrari, a team that has not been at the top of their game. And | :26:03. | :26:06.
they have been working on front and rear wing assemblies. Now as we come | :26:07. | :26:10.
in here this is a pit-stop for Fernando Alonso in free practise one | :26:11. | :26:13.
where they were changing the wheel. I will stop it and zoom in on the | :26:14. | :26:17.
rear of the car. We can see it is a twin element vertical support, in | :26:18. | :26:22.
Kimi Raikkonen's car they were trying a single element. On the | :26:23. | :26:25.
front wing they were changing between the two to work out what was | :26:26. | :26:27.
best. Because they were looking at this | :26:28. | :26:31.
little slot gap here, on the front inner edge, and they were going | :26:32. | :26:36.
between one and two. Now, those have aerodynamic gains, | :26:37. | :26:42.
it has a penalty of more drag. They are not the fastest on the straits | :26:43. | :26:47.
so we have to wait to see which one they collect. Next time is William, | :26:48. | :26:50.
they have been doing very well this season. They have got some tickles | :26:51. | :26:54.
on the front and rear wing end plate. For them it's a packaging | :26:55. | :26:59.
change, they have managed to redesign the raid away dos which are | :27:00. | :27:04.
Larger, and then package the side pods round them to be neater. That | :27:05. | :27:10.
gives better aerodynamics and this circuit is about aerodynamic | :27:11. | :27:17.
efficiency. Red Bull. There is no question aerodynamically they are | :27:18. | :27:20.
going to be improving every race, for these guys it is at the back of | :27:21. | :27:24.
the car. The engine and engine recovery system, that is where they | :27:25. | :27:27.
have done most of their work. They feel with Renault's support they | :27:28. | :27:31.
have a big improvement for this weekend. | :27:32. | :27:35.
Now, on to Mercedes, the team that is leading the battle. As Lewis | :27:36. | :27:39.
Hamilton said yesterday if they throw their kitchen sink we will | :27:40. | :27:43.
throw the bathtub at them. They will do it slow and gentle. On the front | :27:44. | :27:48.
wing they have a bit of a revision on inner edge, they have got changes | :27:49. | :27:57.
to the bargeboards and gone back more neatly packaged. The biggest | :27:58. | :28:01.
single gain comes from Sauber, a team that struggled at the being of | :28:02. | :28:05.
the year. The car was overweight. The drivers were complaining. One of | :28:06. | :28:09.
their drivers drove in Bahrain without a drinks bottle. This car | :28:10. | :28:15.
they have taken 1 kilograms out of the car overall. They are now at the | :28:16. | :28:20.
position where they are on the weight limit. -- 15 kilograms. | :28:21. | :28:27.
Adrian Sutil, due to his size is 12 kilos overweight. Everybody is | :28:28. | :28:30.
pushing, everybody is developing every race, but it's a moving | :28:31. | :28:34.
target. If you are at the front, you can be more relax. If you are at the | :28:35. | :28:37.
back you have double the ground to make up. | :28:38. | :28:42.
Eddie, everybody is trying to close that gap. Who in your mind hasn't | :28:43. | :28:48.
really maximised their chances of getting this year really going, in | :28:49. | :28:52.
terms of closing the gap? Well we talk about Vettel, we talk about | :28:53. | :28:56.
Alonso, all the established drivers but the ones who have caught my eye | :28:57. | :29:01.
are the younger ones. I love what Perez has done. I long what | :29:02. | :29:04.
Magnussen has done and more especially Ricciardo, he has been | :29:05. | :29:07.
the real Dahling of the Formula One paddock this season so far, and | :29:08. | :29:11.
those who have maximised their opportunities probably Hulkenberg, | :29:12. | :29:14.
he is the one who is sitting up there, he is always there, there | :29:15. | :29:19.
abouts and he justified that label as a potential World Champion. What | :29:20. | :29:24.
about the teams now that are in this effective space race to the end of | :29:25. | :29:27.
the season. Do you feel as though we haven't seen what we felt we would | :29:28. | :29:30.
see from Williams, is that still to come? They may have just missed that | :29:31. | :29:34.
little opportunity, they were so quick in testing, they looked so | :29:35. | :29:40.
good. Very strong, has he lost that little window of opportunity? I hope | :29:41. | :29:47.
not, but maybe they will rue the day they didn't maximise. A few mistakes | :29:48. | :29:57.
in the pit lane which we hope have been ironed out, but they are very | :29:58. | :30:00.
positive in that garage, a different vibe. News bonsai, I love the retro | :30:01. | :30:08.
style, fantastic, love it. -- new sponsor. Force India? I think they | :30:09. | :30:15.
have come of age, much stronger. They have got two outstanding | :30:16. | :30:18.
drivers, the car looks very good, they are taking advantage. Let's be | :30:19. | :30:22.
very clear, they have a hidden advantage with that engine package, | :30:23. | :30:26.
because Mercedes is by far the strongest of the runners at the | :30:27. | :30:30.
moment. I am not sure the level of engine power that they have got, | :30:31. | :30:34.
compared to the main team, but let's assume it is a couple of percent, it | :30:35. | :30:39.
is still very strong. They need to keep the push going, but the likes | :30:40. | :30:43.
of Red Bull and Ferrari will be catching them up. You talked about | :30:44. | :30:48.
Magnussen earlier, absolutely brilliant in Australia, taking | :30:49. | :30:51.
second place, and we all thought, here we go, a rookie, superb, and | :30:52. | :30:58.
then it seems as though he has crashed, what is going on at | :30:59. | :31:02.
McLaren? McLaren have not scored points in the last couple of races, | :31:03. | :31:06.
and after the first race, I thought, wow, they are back with a bang. They | :31:07. | :31:11.
didn't score a podium last year, then a double podium, what was | :31:12. | :31:16.
happening here? I was thinking of the McLaren of old. We have not seen | :31:17. | :31:20.
that in the last couple of races, and I didn't quite like the fact | :31:21. | :31:24.
that Jenson, who wants to go and push on with the potential of being | :31:25. | :31:28.
world champion again, he was critical. He said a brand-new driver | :31:29. | :31:32.
cost the team a tense or something like that, I cannot quite under the | :31:33. | :31:37.
words he used, but he was saying, maybe we would be better off with a | :31:38. | :31:41.
more experienced driver, instead of having to nursemaid, I suppose, and | :31:42. | :31:45.
in real terms I suppose he was saying that he is trying to learn | :31:46. | :31:50.
too quickly. A few drivers with a few problems this weekend, including | :31:51. | :31:54.
Jenson, who has been struggling with downforce, and we talked about | :31:55. | :31:58.
Sebastian Vettel. Tom is in the pit lane, what is the latest add Red | :31:59. | :32:03.
Bull? Yes, Suzi, drivers having problems all week end, but not more | :32:04. | :32:08.
than Sebastian Vettel, who goes into qualifying having completed only 24 | :32:09. | :32:12.
laps all weekend, 20 of those in final practice this morning. | :32:13. | :32:16.
Yesterday his running was curtailed by a wiring loom problem after a | :32:17. | :32:21.
problem in the morning, and he never got out again. When he did get out | :32:22. | :32:26.
today, he was trying to condense yesterday's three hours of running | :32:27. | :32:29.
into just one hour, and he was not a happy bunny, complaining of a | :32:30. | :32:33.
balance problem with this car. He has a new front wing, which will | :32:34. | :32:36.
have altered the balance, but a lot of the problem is coming from what | :32:37. | :32:40.
we have got up here, a beautiful sunny day in bars alone. We have | :32:41. | :32:44.
very dark asphalt, so during the middle of the day, the temperatures | :32:45. | :32:49.
ramped up very quickly, and already the track temperature is nearly 20 | :32:50. | :32:53.
degrees hotter than it was at the end of practice this morning. A lot | :32:54. | :32:58.
of the teams, all of the teams are going to be chasing the track | :32:59. | :33:01.
conditions this afternoon, and according to Vettel it will be | :33:02. | :33:05.
difficult for everyone to keep their tyres alive for a whole qualifying | :33:06. | :33:11.
lap. When we get to the twisty section at the end of the lap, | :33:12. | :33:14.
expect to see the cars dancing about. Lotus are looking more | :33:15. | :33:19.
competitive, both of their cars in the top ten in practice, although | :33:20. | :33:22.
there have been a few gearbox niggles. Let's hope they get a clear | :33:23. | :33:28.
run to show what their car can do. Certainly loads to look out for this | :33:29. | :33:33.
weekend, particularly in qualifying, Eddie. Lotus, perhaps on the up, | :33:34. | :33:37.
which is good to see, they were fantastic last year. They work, and | :33:38. | :33:43.
I have a sneaking feeling that the way Brenna were talking, and I don't | :33:44. | :33:49.
want to say which deem it is, but there are a lot of question marks | :33:50. | :33:52.
about 18 not paying the bills. -- Renault. You can always stay in | :33:53. | :34:00.
touch with Formula One and all the news if you want to download the | :34:01. | :34:02.
free BBC Sport app. When I think about it, there has | :34:03. | :34:18.
been so much that has happened this year and in the first few races, we | :34:19. | :34:22.
have lost Martin Whitmarsh, Stefano Domenicali, so you know, it is all | :34:23. | :34:27.
change on the management front, isn't it? A lot of teams are under a | :34:28. | :34:33.
lot of pressure, and that is not going to change. Time for Q1, David | :34:34. | :34:38.
and Ben are your commentary team. The circuit of Barcelona, awaiting | :34:39. | :35:02.
the start of qualifying where thousands of pairs of eyes will be | :35:03. | :35:06.
glued to the progress of the number 14 Ferrari of Fernando Alonso, but | :35:07. | :35:09.
it would take a minor miracle for him to beat the Sale East today. | :35:10. | :35:13.
Around five has brought the team is much closer to their factories. -- | :35:14. | :35:23.
to beat the Mercedes. This weekend will see the 24th running of the | :35:24. | :35:26.
Spanish Grand Prix on this track, just under three miles long with 16 | :35:27. | :35:32.
turns, and abrasive track surface and a sweeping turn three which | :35:33. | :35:36.
transfers so much energy into the tyres. For pole position, the car | :35:37. | :35:40.
needs to be efficient in all areas, power, aerodynamics, handling, | :35:41. | :35:44.
traction and straight-line speed. Over the last three years, three | :35:45. | :35:48.
different constructors have taken the top spot, Red Bull, Williams and | :35:49. | :35:52.
Mercedes. But Lewis Hamilton has never started from pole. Today he | :35:53. | :35:56.
must have another chance to rewrite the record books. It is incredible | :35:57. | :36:03.
to think he had never started from pole here, his team-mates did last | :36:04. | :36:07.
year, Nico Rosberg took pole position but did not manage to | :36:08. | :36:11.
convert it to victory. But a lot of building pressure within that team, | :36:12. | :36:15.
and it is for me fascinating to watch the two men go at it. In the | :36:16. | :36:21.
case of Lewis, of course, as we see Fernando Alonso, Lewis has gone up | :36:22. | :36:24.
against a world champion, going through that pressure of | :36:25. | :36:29.
understanding that his success is your failing, and it is the first | :36:30. | :36:33.
time Nico Rosberg has had a consistently quick car which is | :36:34. | :36:36.
undoubtedly going to take one of them to the world championship. Nico | :36:37. | :36:41.
Rosberg took pole from Lewis Hamilton by a quarter of a second, | :36:42. | :36:44.
but they did not have the race performance we are seeing this year. | :36:45. | :36:48.
Daniel Ricciardo has been the star of qualifying several times this | :36:49. | :36:53.
year, on the front row twice. We have had several wet qualifying | :36:54. | :36:56.
sessions, and today will be only the second time we go into a bone dry | :36:57. | :37:00.
qualifying session. The only other one was in Bahrain, and that was, in | :37:01. | :37:06.
fact, Nico Rosberg's turn to date is only pole position of the year. No | :37:07. | :37:12.
question that Lewis has the reputation for being one of the | :37:13. | :37:15.
quickest guys over a single lap, very much like his hero, Ayrton | :37:16. | :37:20.
Senna. Nico has shown great pace through his career, but not with the | :37:21. | :37:23.
same sort of intensity and spotlight, and that is why this will | :37:24. | :37:27.
be one of the fascinating battles, to see who can take the upper hand. | :37:28. | :37:30.
Sebastian Vettel visualising the lap, it will take a superhuman | :37:31. | :37:36.
effort for him too busy life the sort of pace that Mercedes are | :37:37. | :37:41.
showing this afternoon. Yes, Rosberg and Hamilton were fastest in final | :37:42. | :37:45.
practice this morning, Alonso was third fastest ahead of Massa in the | :37:46. | :37:48.
Williams, Williams looking quite strong. And what out for Lotus, they | :37:49. | :37:52.
have had a difficult start to the season for Romain Grosjean and his | :37:53. | :37:57.
new team-mate, Pastor Maldonado, but much more encouraging this weekend. | :37:58. | :38:00.
Grosjean was fifth fastest, Al DiNardo was in the top ten as well. | :38:01. | :38:08.
Maldonado was the race winner two years ago, so he is fast on the | :38:09. | :38:13.
circuit. Sergio Perez for Force India, their worry is qualifying, | :38:14. | :38:18.
will they be able to get a single lap out of it. At the lower end of | :38:19. | :38:25.
the grid, Marussia versus Caterham, Marussia looking quite strong in | :38:26. | :38:29.
that battle this weekend. Jules Bianchi we were just looking at, we | :38:30. | :38:32.
will have to wait and see whether he will be able to deliver when we get | :38:33. | :38:35.
to the raise funds, or qualifying here today. -- get to the race. | :38:36. | :38:43.
Lewis Hamilton has never been on pole here, but he was fastest in | :38:44. | :38:47.
qualifying only for McLaren not to have a sufficient amount of fuel in | :38:48. | :38:50.
the car for him to be able to keep that pole position spot. He would | :38:51. | :38:54.
have been fastest but has never started from pole position. A very | :38:55. | :39:00.
serious looking young Ferrari fan! So many Ferrari fans here today in | :39:01. | :39:04.
support of Fernando Alonso, and off the back of the third-place finish | :39:05. | :39:07.
in China for Fernando Alonso, do we give them a bit more hope? Fernando | :39:08. | :39:13.
can always bring a special result for his home Grand Prix, and the gap | :39:14. | :39:17.
in terms of outright performance will be a step too far. The level of | :39:18. | :39:21.
dominance through the free practice sessions from Mercedes is much | :39:22. | :39:24.
bigger than we ever saw from Red Bull in their dominant streak. But | :39:25. | :39:29.
that said, Fernando is the ultimate professional, he never gives up, and | :39:30. | :39:32.
with a bit of home support, it is like having a tail wind. Nigel | :39:33. | :39:37.
Mansell used to claim it was worth a second, I doubt it was worth that | :39:38. | :39:42.
much! But if they believe it gives them a boost, psychologically, the | :39:43. | :39:45.
brain controls the body, not the other way around, and it is very | :39:46. | :39:50.
much a mind game. Stunning performances from Alonso here in the | :39:51. | :39:53.
past, that last win for him and Ferrari was at this very track. | :39:54. | :39:57.
Marcus Ericsson is just keeping an eye on what is going to happen as | :39:58. | :40:01.
the beginning of qualifying does get under way. The first car contract is | :40:02. | :40:05.
Esteban Gutierrez under way. The first car contract is | :40:06. | :40:08.
as we have heard, this car is lighter this weekend. They have | :40:09. | :40:11.
managed to save some weight from various areas around the car, and | :40:12. | :40:15.
they are hoping this will allow them to escape Q1. Now, they really have | :40:16. | :40:20.
been in the fight right at the lower end of the grid this year. They have | :40:21. | :40:24.
been fighting with the Marussias and Caterhams, a little faster than | :40:25. | :40:28.
those two teams, but it has been a struggle for them to get out of Q1, | :40:29. | :40:34.
so that has to be their first target. Kobayashi getting ready, | :40:35. | :40:37.
Caterham will struggle very much to get through the first part of | :40:38. | :40:41.
qualifying. They have not been showing a great turn of pace, and | :40:42. | :40:45.
announcements are changes on their technical team, with Mark Smith | :40:46. | :40:49.
leaving the team, and they are setting up a technical committee to | :40:50. | :40:52.
run things at Caterham in the future. Adrian Sutil contract, | :40:53. | :41:01.
Esteban Gutierrez out, so both the Saubers are on track. Both Force | :41:02. | :41:07.
Indias are out as well, but Fernando Alonso, a double race winner of this | :41:08. | :41:15.
track, let's see if he can improve on fourth place on the grid, his | :41:16. | :41:19.
best position so far this year. Maldonado on his way out, that | :41:20. | :41:24.
unique twin-task design on the front end of the Lotus. Now they finally | :41:25. | :41:29.
seem to be getting a bit of performance from it, and there is a | :41:30. | :41:32.
terms of seeing Lotus in the top ten. Plenty to watch out for, Force | :41:33. | :41:37.
India, of course, well up in the championship, ahead of Ferrari in | :41:38. | :41:41.
the constructors table. They sit third in the points. I think this | :41:42. | :41:44.
weekend could prove to be a little more difficult for them. Let's what | :41:45. | :41:50.
Gutierrez, he goes on to the first flying lap, and we can get an | :41:51. | :41:53.
opportunity to look at this track, which is so well-known to drivers | :41:54. | :41:57.
and teams and Formula One fans alike from Grands Prix and the extensive | :41:58. | :42:01.
testing that has been done here in the past. And it is a great track, | :42:02. | :42:05.
it has been on the calendar since the early 1990s, it is a real neck | :42:06. | :42:12.
rancher, especially turn three, as we dropped down into the hairpin. It | :42:13. | :42:18.
is a circuit that you need, mentally, if you get one sequence | :42:19. | :42:22.
wrong, it can put you out of position on other corners. As we go | :42:23. | :42:28.
up the hill into turn nine, qualifying utopia would be to get | :42:29. | :42:33.
that flat, but with lower downforce and the Pirelli tyres that we have, | :42:34. | :42:37.
they are some way short of that. You can see the modification from the | :42:38. | :42:40.
original race track, a much shorter loop, with more run-off in the area. | :42:41. | :42:46.
I don't recall anyone having a big accident there, but then we move | :42:47. | :42:50.
into another sequence of corners which robbed us of two incredibly | :42:51. | :42:54.
fast right-handers, putting us into this little Mickey Mouse section. | :42:55. | :42:58.
This is a good education for what we can expect pace wise from the cars | :42:59. | :43:02.
at Monaco. Anyone who is quick through the last section is a pretty | :43:03. | :43:08.
good indication of drive ability and mechanical grip. Gutierrez is the | :43:09. | :43:14.
first to establish a lap time, 1:29.26, he is on the hard compound. | :43:15. | :43:18.
Let's have a little look at a replay of Adrian Sutil. A finger in the air | :43:19. | :43:29.
as well! A very sophisticated way to hold your steering wheel! What we | :43:30. | :43:32.
will be thinking about is a target lap time, he clipped the kerb as | :43:33. | :43:38.
well. And a crashed from Maldonado! Maldonado has crashed, take on the | :43:39. | :43:42.
front end off, the right front corner. Pastor Maldonado, would you | :43:43. | :43:46.
believe it, when Lotus are finally starting to look like a competitive | :43:47. | :43:51.
team, and he has crashed. Let's try and identify, out of turn three, I | :43:52. | :43:57.
think. He has gone off and hit the wall somewhere, and obviously we | :43:58. | :44:01.
wait for a replay. Is it turn nine of the head? Maybe it is out of | :44:02. | :44:07.
seven and eight. It could be the exit of turn three, it is somewhere | :44:08. | :44:12.
you do not normally see the car. Let's go for the exit of turn three. | :44:13. | :44:17.
Red flag, session stopped - qualifying one comes to an early | :44:18. | :44:22.
halt, a pause rather than a halt, because the session will restart | :44:23. | :44:25.
with 13 and a half minutes still to go. The club has stopped, but out of | :44:26. | :44:30.
qualifying is Pastor Maldonado. Clearly, we are down to one Lotus in | :44:31. | :44:34.
the session, and that is so bitterly disappointing when they have been | :44:35. | :44:38.
showing so much better pace. He completed more laps yesterday than | :44:39. | :44:41.
anybody else just to show how they are in better shape. He got wide as | :44:42. | :44:49.
he came through two. He managed to get through the apex, does he lose | :44:50. | :44:53.
out on the kerb? He has gone beyond the normal position of the track. So | :44:54. | :44:59.
this is the mid of turn two. Overtier there -- oversteer there. | :45:00. | :45:04.
As the car starts to oversteer he runs wide on to the green painted | :45:05. | :45:09.
part of the circuit. He corrects it but he would have been better off | :45:10. | :45:17.
doing a spin. I lost the car. In that situation he corrected into it. | :45:18. | :45:20.
If he had turned the steering away from the direction of travel, he | :45:21. | :45:24.
would have gone round and spun down the circuit. That is a decision you | :45:25. | :45:28.
have to make very quickly, when you in a recovery mode already. That is | :45:29. | :45:34.
an instantaneous decision a drive can take. There is Charles pick, the | :45:35. | :45:39.
development driver for Lotus, but Maldonado who has not covered | :45:40. | :45:44.
himself in glory this year, former race winner round here, pole | :45:45. | :45:48.
position winner as well, back in 2012, that brilliant victory he had | :45:49. | :45:53.
oefr Fernando Alonso, how long ago that seem, this season has not got | :45:54. | :45:57.
any better. -- over. Finally he has a car that seems to be half | :45:58. | :46:01.
competitive and he has chucked it in the wall He is going no further, | :46:02. | :46:05.
disappointment and for the Lotus team, with all the financial rumours | :46:06. | :46:09.
surrounding whether they are paying their Renault bills, and what the | :46:10. | :46:12.
financial state of that team is, the last thing of course you need is | :46:13. | :46:16.
more crash damage. I was getting into the subject of what kind of lap | :46:17. | :46:20.
times we should be looking at. We have a bit of piece and quiet so it | :46:21. | :46:24.
a good time to bring you in, Tom. What have you heard up and down the | :46:25. | :46:29.
pit lane in terms of what the target time should be to get through Q1? I | :46:30. | :46:35.
have been talking to several engineers since the final practise | :46:36. | :46:43.
sex, they reckon you will have to do a 1.28, 1: 28.1. A second quicker | :46:44. | :46:52.
than what we have seen so far: -- session. That looks possible for | :46:53. | :46:57.
certainly the Force Indias and the Saubers looking at the lap time of | :46:58. | :47:01.
the car in P1, because the difference in lap time between the | :47:02. | :47:05.
hard and the medium that we saw, certainly yesterday, was about 1.2 | :47:06. | :47:08.
seconds that, was the average lap time difference, it was less than | :47:09. | :47:11.
that this morning but track temperatures are more akin to how | :47:12. | :47:15.
they were during second practise, so we should see that gap between the | :47:16. | :47:20.
two tyres opening up a bit, and which of the front runners will be | :47:21. | :47:24.
able to get through on the hard tyre, well, you got your money on | :47:25. | :47:27.
Mercedes but everyone will have to probably go on the medium tyre. | :47:28. | :47:32.
Thank you. Another quick look at a replay of Maldonado getting it | :47:33. | :47:35.
wrong. It is interesting he corrected it initially and then it | :47:36. | :47:40.
went He ran beyond that Green Line painted on to the circuit, but just | :47:41. | :47:43.
beyond that the point he loses the car, we see him going into turn one. | :47:44. | :47:52.
He has a bit of oversteer here, it's a question of he should have backed | :47:53. | :47:57.
out. It is ease I in hindsight. The dark green is artificial grass. It | :47:58. | :48:02.
is like a plastic grass, and once he has got the rear of the car on to | :48:03. | :48:06.
that, he should have released the throttle. Opened the steering, | :48:07. | :48:10.
instead of trying to fight it. He got his hand into the back of the | :48:11. | :48:13.
left hand side of the steering wheel. Reaching for the clutch. You | :48:14. | :48:19.
have clutch paddle on Riether side and depending on his personal | :48:20. | :48:23.
preference trying to make sure that in the first instance he was keeping | :48:24. | :48:26.
the engine running there is an anti-stall on these engines if it | :48:27. | :48:33.
senses it is going to go a target RPM it will lift the clutch for you | :48:34. | :48:37.
but it doesn't always work at Hague speed. There is a lot to look at | :48:38. | :48:43.
here. He starts to lose it and watch his hand as well. That is him trying | :48:44. | :48:47.
to grab the clutch paddle. What you could hear there, on that audio is | :48:48. | :48:51.
once he went beyond the Green Line, he was on the artificial grass you | :48:52. | :48:55.
here the RPM increase, that is the point it is spinning the rear wheels | :48:56. | :49:02.
and 140mph on the corner, wheel spin is going to lead to major incident. | :49:03. | :49:08.
The previous specification of cars with more downforce and less | :49:09. | :49:12.
horsepower, this is worrying for it is not totally under control at the | :49:13. | :49:15.
moment. Normally they have an additional strap which they pull | :49:16. | :49:19.
back and attach to the recovery vehicle. You can end up getting more | :49:20. | :49:23.
damage if they are overenthusiastic, they are under no pressure to remove | :49:24. | :49:27.
it. They can take their time and move that cars it has been damaged | :49:28. | :49:31.
at the front but the rear of the gash, gearbox hasn't got any damage, | :49:32. | :49:35.
they will check it and you know, they don't want to see it banging up | :49:36. | :49:39.
against the tractor. Coming back to that turn three, it is a corner you | :49:40. | :49:45.
said earlier it was flat out, with the old spec cars but you have more | :49:46. | :49:50.
horsepower, less downforce so they are having to rethink that corner. | :49:51. | :49:55.
They are, but I don't see it as any different from when they race in the | :49:56. | :50:00.
rain. If you go back to the heyday of downforce when it rained they had | :50:01. | :50:05.
less, less grip, the water after reflected the slot gaps, so they | :50:06. | :50:10.
adapted to that, and of course, in dry-running, they may have the nice | :50:11. | :50:14.
memories and in Maldonado's case he won for Williams, so he has nice | :50:15. | :50:18.
memories of driving this circuit, but you have to drive for the | :50:19. | :50:22.
condition, and you know, modern Formula One has a different way of | :50:23. | :50:26.
delivering power now, with the amount of electrical energy that is | :50:27. | :50:29.
recover rabble. They have smaller wings but when you go to Monza you | :50:30. | :50:34.
ran much less downforce and you got on with it. It is a relative thing, | :50:35. | :50:38.
you want to be quicker than your competitor, and what happens those | :50:39. | :50:42.
who are winning don't complain, those who are not winning have a | :50:43. | :50:45.
list of racing driver complaints and excuses. Well, I don't think he had | :50:46. | :50:51.
any excuse, it looked straightforward driver Ron on. | :50:52. | :50:56.
Pastor Maldonado's fault. He was still on the hard tyre there, it | :50:57. | :51:00.
wasn't as if it was going to be his best lap of the day. Maldonado is | :51:01. | :51:03.
south of qualifying. We have lost one, we get into the rest of Q1. 13 | :51:04. | :51:08.
minutes to go, and we will lose another five cars during the course | :51:09. | :51:14.
of this next 13 minutes. Now, we no the Caterhams and Marussias will be | :51:15. | :51:17.
struggling to get through. Sauber could be in a bit of danger. Force | :51:18. | :51:24.
Indias were not as quick as they would have liked this morning. It | :51:25. | :51:28.
might why we have seen Hulkenberg and Perez out fairly on, to | :51:29. | :51:31.
determine what the balance of the car is, Fernando Alonso now makes | :51:32. | :51:35.
his first exit in this session for Ferrari. | :51:36. | :51:39.
He sets off down the pit lane, there will be a huge response round the | :51:40. | :51:43.
circuit to Alonso coming out, I am sure. Twice winner on this track, | :51:44. | :51:46.
also a winner of the European Grand Prix at Valencia a couple of years | :51:47. | :51:50.
ago, and another stunning drive when he came from way back down the grid | :51:51. | :51:54.
to take victory, so he just loves to race on home soil, and of course | :51:55. | :51:59.
very much the national hero. So, the Ferrari hoping to have developed a | :52:00. | :52:03.
bit more speed, that promising performance with third place in | :52:04. | :52:07.
China, but yet to qualify in the top three, so far this season. Really, | :52:08. | :52:11.
you would expect it still to be tough, Red Bull have been looking | :52:12. | :52:17.
quicker over one lap than Ferrari. It could be Vettel versus Alonso and | :52:18. | :52:20.
Ricciardo for that matter for a position on the second row of the | :52:21. | :52:28.
grid. Let us ride onboard with Nico Rosberg. | :52:29. | :52:32.
We expect him to be in the battle with Lewis Hamilton for pole | :52:33. | :52:36.
position this year. We will see no oversteer like we saw with | :52:37. | :52:38.
Maldonado. Let us listen through three. | :52:39. | :52:44.
Lifted out early and got on the power and opened that throttle. Not | :52:45. | :52:48.
taking any risk. Getting on the green. A bit of oversteer at the | :52:49. | :52:52.
apex into four. Very wind affected this circuit. We set up on a slight | :52:53. | :52:56.
elevate -- elevation here, not far from the sea, you get gusty winds | :52:57. | :53:01.
which affects the cars, dropping down towards seven, braking with | :53:02. | :53:05.
lateral load on, and as you go through the apex, the circuit rises | :53:06. | :53:12.
up. Nice and tidy so far. Well, a major lift as he turned in, you can | :53:13. | :53:16.
hear the difference in the actual performance, we should remember with | :53:17. | :53:19.
less drag on the cars this year, they are arriving at the corners at | :53:20. | :53:23.
a higher speed, so that has an effect on whether they can carry as | :53:24. | :53:27.
much speed through the apex or not. He is a little quicker than | :53:28. | :53:32.
Hamilton, who is on a lap currently. Rosberg further along and of course | :53:33. | :53:36.
fastest of everybody so far, Hamilton a fraction slower than in | :53:37. | :53:40.
the first sector. Nice and steady, not using too much | :53:41. | :53:47.
of the kerb as he comes out. Will struggle to control the torque as he | :53:48. | :53:52.
runs for the line. 126.7. So he goes fastest for the moment. We are about | :53:53. | :53:56.
a second away from fastest time we saw this morning. We are waiting for | :53:57. | :54:00.
Hamilton to cross line. Hamilton is not going to challenge. That was | :54:01. | :54:03.
Grosjean rejoining the circuitment so she has overshot the braking | :54:04. | :54:09.
point down at ten and bailed out of this particular lap. -- circuit. Ten | :54:10. | :54:14.
minutes to go they may need, probably will need to run the medium | :54:15. | :54:18.
come pond tyre as Tom suggested, it may be that Mercedes can get through | :54:19. | :54:27.
this segment. Surely he will. -- compound tyre. Let us see what | :54:28. | :54:30.
happened to Grosjean. He locks up, has no choice but to | :54:31. | :54:34.
use the escape road. That will have done a bit of damage to that front | :54:35. | :54:38.
left. If he is lucky it won't have a flat spot. With the long straight... | :54:39. | :54:49.
RADIO: momentum brought it back again. That | :54:50. | :55:23.
us was a replay. That is why he backed off in the middle sector of | :55:24. | :55:26.
the last lap. So Lewis Hamilton, that is the mistake that caused him | :55:27. | :55:31.
to back off. He is on a quick lap. Fastest of anybody in the first | :55:32. | :55:34.
sector, a fraction slower than Rosberg in the second. Let us see | :55:35. | :55:39.
what Vettel does, 27.9 for Vettel. Goes second to Rosberg. What about | :55:40. | :55:44.
Hamilton? This could beat Rosberg's time. Out of the last corn her comes | :55:45. | :55:49.
and not quite. Four tenths of a second slower Rosberg was quicker in | :55:50. | :55:54.
the last part of free practise this morning. Has he found a comfort | :55:55. | :55:59.
zone? Let us see how that develops and just a word on someone who is | :56:00. | :56:10.
able to translate gond digeek. Jenson Button on a reasonable lap. | :56:11. | :56:14.
The come par son at the bottom left is to 16th place, because of course, | :56:15. | :56:20.
to get into Q2 you need to be in the top 16. We will lose six gash, | :56:21. | :56:27.
currently in the drop zone we have Sutil and Kobayashi. Grosjean at the | :56:28. | :56:30.
moment, because he has not done a lap. Button who is about to complete | :56:31. | :56:33.
his lap and Maldonado who will be out because he hasn't managed to | :56:34. | :56:37.
complete a lap at all, because he crashed into the wall on exit of | :56:38. | :56:42.
turn three. Button crosses the line, goes tenth. | :56:43. | :56:48.
RADIO: P2 and it is about half a second to P1. That is mainly exit | :56:49. | :56:54.
turn seven and turn 10. And that is the areas that Hamilton being told | :56:55. | :57:00.
where he can maybe pick up some time. Maybe won't worry about it | :57:01. | :57:03.
now, he will be concentrating on getting the ultimate out of car. | :57:04. | :57:07.
Hulkenberg prepares to come out. He is only 13th and Perez is 15th. As | :57:08. | :57:12.
we thought Force India are struggling a bit in | :57:13. | :57:15.
we thought Force India are conditions. Lock up for Kimi | :57:16. | :57:19.
Raikkonen. You can hear the wail of the tyre. Haven't heard that for a | :57:20. | :57:24.
while. Not since Melbourne that I recall hearing the screeching of the | :57:25. | :57:27.
tyre. Raikkonen having a better weekend than the previous races. He | :57:28. | :57:32.
needs it. You know, we need to build to see him have a clean run, to | :57:33. | :57:39.
young where he is relative to Fernando Alonso. That has been a | :57:40. | :57:45.
tale for many of the team, the hard tyre Pirelli have brought. Even | :57:46. | :57:48.
though the track temperature is up to 44 degree, if the cars aren't | :57:49. | :57:54.
generating a lot of downforce, and McLaren are light on that, it might | :57:55. | :57:59.
affect Force India, they struggle to get the tiers to work. They are so | :58:00. | :58:03.
temperature sensitive, the track temperature as we speak is 44 | :58:04. | :58:08.
degrees, so certainly, you know, plenty of residual heat in the | :58:09. | :58:13.
Tarmac. It is about how the driver prepares the lap. You can influence | :58:14. | :58:17.
the temperature by brake, you radiate the temperature from within | :58:18. | :58:21.
the brake disk, that goes into the wheel and affects the pressures and | :58:22. | :58:25.
by generating load, surface temperature you can get easily by | :58:26. | :58:30.
spinning up the rear etyres but it is more general difficult to | :58:31. | :58:35.
generate that. The medium tyre, Hamilton is on another lap. He has | :58:36. | :58:39.
gone quickest of anybody else in the first sector, he has gone a little | :58:40. | :58:44.
slower in the middle sectors it may be experimenting a bit. He doesn't | :58:45. | :58:49.
really need to put in a faster lap I would have thought. Just over five | :58:50. | :58:54.
minutes to go and we are getting into the serious bit now of Q1. In | :58:55. | :58:59.
the drop down are the two Marussias, the Caterhams and the Lotus of | :59:00. | :59:03.
Grosjean and Maldonado that doesn't appear on the bra gra -- graphic. | :59:04. | :59:09.
Watching Hulkenberg here, let us see how he gets on, has put in | :59:10. | :59:12.
tremendous performances this year, but will the car give him what he | :59:13. | :59:18.
needs in qualifying here? He is a star performer consistently. One of | :59:19. | :59:22.
the bigger drives, we know some of the other team, Sauber especially | :59:23. | :59:25.
have come here with up grades to reduce the weight of the car, that | :59:26. | :59:29.
should help Sutil. He is another one of the, he is like a whippet but he | :59:30. | :59:34.
is tall, so he has to carry weight more than his team-mate. And Force | :59:35. | :59:40.
India delivering what must be a modest budget in comparison the the | :59:41. | :59:51.
four big teams. Currently fourth in the championship, Nico Hulkenberg. | :59:52. | :59:54.
Nico Hulkenberg was pretty apprehensive coming into this race, | :59:55. | :59:58.
saying that the team has only brought a new floor, everything else | :59:59. | :00:03.
is as he raced in China. When you consider how much some of the other | :00:04. | :00:06.
teams have brought here, he was saying, are we going to be as | :00:07. | :00:10.
competitive? He was certainly nervous, let's see what his lap time | :00:11. | :00:16.
is like. We are into the last part on the softer tyre, this is a | :00:17. | :00:20.
crucial lap for him. Through the last corner, oh, a lot of steering | :00:21. | :00:25.
effort. In the past few years, it has been a simple drive around | :00:26. | :00:31.
there, he goes sixth fastest, 1:28.1. That is around the target | :00:32. | :00:37.
time, but is it going to be enough? That is not going to be comfortable, | :00:38. | :00:40.
I don't think, he would like to see a better time than that. Perez, his | :00:41. | :00:47.
team-mate, is on the cusp, 16th, of what is available from that car. | :00:48. | :00:51.
Just in front of him is Adrian Sutil, who is a lot slower than his | :00:52. | :00:56.
team-mate, complaining of the car being all over the place. He was | :00:57. | :01:00.
this morning as well. Whatever they have brought to light in that | :01:01. | :01:04.
chassis and overall package is not to his liking. Team radio so | :01:05. | :01:15.
unstable, unreal! Perez has a good record at this circuit, he has not | :01:16. | :01:22.
been outqualified by a team mate here, including at McLaren. He is a | :01:23. | :01:27.
little bit slower this time than his team-mate, but he goes 12th quickest | :01:28. | :01:32.
on that. That is a little bit more dangerous territory, 1:28.5. On | :01:33. | :01:37.
board with Daniel Ricciardo, one of the outstanding drivers of the year | :01:38. | :01:40.
so far as he has moved up to Red Bull, what can he deliver today? The | :01:41. | :01:45.
option is just to move up the order slightly, be a little safer. He | :01:46. | :01:50.
struggled for balance this morning, he had a big chunk of oversteer, he | :01:51. | :01:54.
goes Forth, fine for now. Yeah, a good performance, that puts the Red | :01:55. | :02:01.
Bulls through to the next part of qualifying. Looking at who is on the | :02:02. | :02:07.
cusp, Button and Magnussen in 14th and 15th, so expect a bit more from | :02:08. | :02:14.
McLaren. An interesting comment from Hamilton saying, we have made the | :02:15. | :02:17.
car worse, it is a nightmare to drive. Actually, he is not happy | :02:18. | :02:22.
with the balance of his car. Grosjean goes safe with 12th | :02:23. | :02:28.
fastest, 1:28.4. On board with Magnussen, currently 16th, in the | :02:29. | :02:32.
danger zone, but behind in is the Sauber of Sutil on the medium | :02:33. | :02:37.
compound tyre. Red Bull, by the way, have done their time is on the hard | :02:38. | :02:41.
tyre, both Vettel and Ricciardo looked to be safely through to the | :02:42. | :02:45.
next part of qualifying on the hard tyre, putting them in better shape. | :02:46. | :02:50.
If we believe these are worth more than a second, that should move | :02:51. | :02:54.
Magnussen up to the area where Red Bull currently sits. One of the Red | :02:55. | :03:01.
Bulls, Vettel, getting out of the way to allow McLaren a clear run to | :03:02. | :03:07.
turn seven. Interestingly, he shifts down a gear through nine, looking | :03:08. | :03:13.
for a bit more drive and torque from the engine. Of course, all the | :03:14. | :03:16.
drivers and teams are still learning. They did not test in | :03:17. | :03:20.
Barcelona, which is quite rare. Normally it is used for a huge | :03:21. | :03:23.
amount of pre-season testing, but this year they tested at Jerez and | :03:24. | :03:29.
in Bahrain. I think Button pulled over to let Magnussen have a clear | :03:30. | :03:33.
run. If he is having difficulty getting the front is working, having | :03:34. | :03:38.
to slow down for his team-mate, that is not going to help. Is he coming | :03:39. | :03:45.
in? No, Button is in 15th. I presume he will continue past. Magnussen | :03:46. | :03:50.
goes 11th, but Button has now been pushed down to 16th, very much in | :03:51. | :03:55.
the danger zone. He has just started his time to lap. Raikkonen gets away | :03:56. | :04:03.
with that, too deep through one, compromising your line into two. Was | :04:04. | :04:07.
he put off by the Toro Rosso which eventually led him past? He might | :04:08. | :04:10.
have been unsettled by the uncertainty of knowing whether it | :04:11. | :04:13.
would get out of the way. Chequered flag, sorry, I was just going to | :04:14. | :04:20.
say, Magnussen only gained around a seven tenths from the option tyres, | :04:21. | :04:24.
so McLaren not getting much out of them. Button, 24.1 in the first | :04:25. | :04:31.
sector, quicker than his team-mate. Sutil is 16th for the moment, but | :04:32. | :04:36.
Jenson Button has been pushed down. Sutil reporting something wrong with | :04:37. | :04:40.
the car, all over the place. Kobayashi comes across the line for | :04:41. | :04:45.
Caterham, 19th, faster than Max Chilton but slower than Bianchi, who | :04:46. | :04:50.
is back in the pits. Bianchi has outqualified Kobayashi. We await | :04:51. | :04:54.
Chilton and Ericsson to finish off. He has been off a couple of times | :04:55. | :04:59.
this weekend, Max Chilton, but he just held it together. That was Max | :05:00. | :05:04.
Chilton, not Bianchi, as the caption came up with. He is still on a lap, | :05:05. | :05:10.
Magnussen, but we are interested to see Button, who was currently in the | :05:11. | :05:14.
drop zone. He was second quickest on Friday morning, but McLaren really | :05:15. | :05:19.
appear to be struggling. He has done enough, ninth quickest. That button | :05:20. | :05:23.
safe. Kimi Raikkonen is in the danger zone, but I do not think | :05:24. | :05:29.
anyone can threaten him. No, he has gone tends anyway. Grosjean is the | :05:30. | :05:34.
next closest to that area. I do not think anybody else can threaten him. | :05:35. | :05:37.
We have those cars that are eliminated, and although Gutierrez | :05:38. | :05:43.
did get through in 13th position, Adrian Sutil failed. The gap between | :05:44. | :05:49.
them, less than two tenths, and more than two tenths in weight difference | :05:50. | :05:53.
between the two. But the net result is that Sutil is out, Max Chilton | :05:54. | :05:57.
has failed, but he has outqualified his team-mate, and he will be happy | :05:58. | :06:03.
about that. Chilton is the fastest of the Caterham-Marussia Quartet, a | :06:04. | :06:09.
good effort from him. The Caterhams really struggling, I don't know what | :06:10. | :06:14.
happened to Kobayashi, unusual to see him at the bottom of the list. | :06:15. | :06:20.
Ericsson was on pole position here in GP2 last year, and he has ended | :06:21. | :06:23.
up head of his team-mate for the first time this year. Good effort | :06:24. | :06:29.
from him. Somewhat surprised with Kobayashi, I expect he had an issue. | :06:30. | :06:40.
We will find out why. Daniil Kvyat having an issue into the last | :06:41. | :06:44.
sequence of corners. One thing led to another, didn't it? A bit of | :06:45. | :06:48.
inexperience, you make one mistake and do not allow it to frustrate you | :06:49. | :06:56.
into compounding the issue. Now, Vergne delivered a pretty good lap, | :06:57. | :07:02.
and both Toro Rossos have done well, sixth for Kvyat, eight for Vergne, | :07:03. | :07:08.
but Vergne has a ten place penalty because of... They had a wheel come | :07:09. | :07:12.
off yesterday, they have a ten place penalty. The Caterhams and | :07:13. | :07:16.
Morrisseys bowed out, interestingly just a little bit slower than the | :07:17. | :07:25.
GP2 pole time. -- Marussias both out. It is an interesting aspect | :07:26. | :07:31.
this year. Adrian Sutil for Sauber, Max Chilton, fastest of the other | :07:32. | :07:38.
four, he is out, so is Bianchi. TEAM RADIO: I guess we would have | :07:39. | :07:45.
been out, we would have been out, Sutil date 28.5. | :07:46. | :07:52.
All sorts of problems, Jenson Button not sounding very happy, this is the | :07:53. | :07:57.
story of his season post-Australia. Just carrying on from last year, | :07:58. | :08:01.
with the exception of Australia, absolutely right, Suzi, he is not | :08:02. | :08:06.
enjoy his racing, and you can see why. As a world champion, you expect | :08:07. | :08:11.
to be given a car that has a decent chance to have a fight around the | :08:12. | :08:14.
top end of the grid. And at the moment he doesn't have that. Romain | :08:15. | :08:19.
Grosjean left it quite late to go out and do is lap, and is team-mate | :08:20. | :08:24.
Maldonado did not. Lotus are trying to move forward, Eddie, and mistakes | :08:25. | :08:28.
like this will not make them happy. It doesn't help. You need everyone | :08:29. | :08:33.
pulling together, a team effort, and the drivers are just at the sharp | :08:34. | :08:40.
end. Everyone else is behind them, and they all need the drivers to do | :08:41. | :08:44.
their best job. We don't know what was wrong with a car, if someone | :08:45. | :08:49.
broke or it was driver error, but you do need the card to be in there | :08:50. | :08:53.
with a fighting chance. He is now out, he will be at the back of the | :08:54. | :09:00.
grid for the race. He is having a shocker of a season, what do you | :09:01. | :09:06.
make of Maldonado? He did win here with Williams, now with Lotus, not | :09:07. | :09:11.
going well. He has taken a decision, he brought his sponsorship | :09:12. | :09:15.
out of Williams, he had a little bit of a rat last year, and he brought | :09:16. | :09:20.
its two Lotus. Lotus needed the financial support, he brought it | :09:21. | :09:25.
there. It is not obvious to everyone that that is paying off, and on the | :09:26. | :09:28.
other side you have Williams, which really does look much stronger. | :09:29. | :09:33.
Let's have a little look at Lewis Hamilton, he had a moment, unlike | :09:34. | :09:38.
him this year, as Nigel Mansell described as almost perfect, but he | :09:39. | :09:42.
did make a mistake. The kiss of death! Thanks, Nigel! Nigel saying | :09:43. | :09:48.
somebody is on top of his game! Nevertheless, Lewis is on top of his | :09:49. | :09:53.
game, he has won these last races, fighting hard for a championship | :09:54. | :09:57.
lead, he wants to go into Monaco with the championship lead. I am | :09:58. | :10:01.
sure, you know, he will be very hard to beat this weekend. Quite worrying | :10:02. | :10:06.
what he said on team radio, we have made the car worse, that is not what | :10:07. | :10:12.
you want to hear. If you analyse each and every communication between | :10:13. | :10:15.
a driver and a team that we have seen in that session, it is all | :10:16. | :10:18.
about the same thing, the lack of grip, no rear grip. All of the | :10:19. | :10:23.
situations you would expect, but either there is something wrong with | :10:24. | :10:27.
the track for the tyres, and I would not be worried. If I was Lewis, just | :10:28. | :10:32.
calm down a bit, take a deep breath, let's make another run at this. Nico | :10:33. | :10:37.
Rosberg seems very calm, in the battle between the two, but we have | :10:38. | :10:43.
got Q2 first, so back to our commentators, David and Ben. | :10:44. | :10:47.
Sebastian Vettel safely into Q2, he has not made it into Q3 every time | :10:48. | :10:51.
this year, he has missed it on a couple of occasions so far this | :10:52. | :10:55.
season. Let's see whether he can do it. He is incredibly close to | :10:56. | :10:58.
getting into the top ten, the sort of lap times between the likes of a | :10:59. | :11:02.
league game as in fifth place all the way down to the guys in 15th | :11:03. | :11:08.
place is just about half a second or so. -- the likes of Felipe Massa. | :11:09. | :11:15.
Peter Sauber on the left with his development driver Giedo van der | :11:16. | :11:20.
Garde. Monisha Kaltenborn celebrating her birthday today, I am | :11:21. | :11:24.
not sure there will be a huge amount to celebrate. Gutierrez was 13th | :11:25. | :11:28.
fastest, a little bit of a boost for the team, ahead of Magnussen, a | :11:29. | :11:33.
little bit of a surprise. Button ended up ten fastest in that first | :11:34. | :11:38.
session, so it doesn't look as though there is a particularly | :11:39. | :11:42.
strong resurgence from McLaren on this occasion. The session gets | :11:43. | :11:46.
under way, Tom, we saw the lap times that were needed to get through, any | :11:47. | :11:49.
idea what we are looking at to get into the top ten? I have just been | :11:50. | :11:54.
ferreting around, looking at a high 27, I think that is what we will | :11:55. | :11:59.
see. We saw, of course, a lot of the middle group go out on the medium | :12:00. | :12:03.
tyre, so they have had that advantage already. It is a question | :12:04. | :12:07.
of trying to eke out a couple more tenths, let's see how close they get | :12:08. | :12:13.
to a high 27. Esteban Gutierrez, the one remaining Sauber in the field | :12:14. | :12:17.
now, we have lost Adrian Sutil from the line-up. But otherwise, it is | :12:18. | :12:22.
going to be the Toro Rossos the ones to keep an eye on. Kvyat was sixth | :12:23. | :12:27.
fastest in the session, Vergne eight fastest. We know he has a penalty, | :12:28. | :12:31.
but you are allowed to go right through qualifying to get as high as | :12:32. | :12:36.
you can do for the actual grid tomorrow. So Vergne could be one to | :12:37. | :12:43.
keep an eye on as well. Out onto the track, Nico Hulkenberg. He did a | :12:44. | :12:47.
good lap in that last session, seventh fastest, he would have been | :12:48. | :12:50.
pretty happy with that, knowing that qualification might be a weakness. | :12:51. | :12:55.
Kevin Magnussen studying some data. We are not quite in a paperless | :12:56. | :13:00.
office in Formula One, he has an overlay between himself and his | :13:01. | :13:04.
team-mate. Jenson only marginally quicker, but he will be surprised to | :13:05. | :13:07.
see just how much variation there can be in driving style and actually | :13:08. | :13:13.
building the lap time together. So he will be banking the bits where he | :13:14. | :13:16.
knows he is quicker, which inevitably he will be in some areas, | :13:17. | :13:22.
and trying to work out, how do I do that in the other areas? Hulkenberg | :13:23. | :13:27.
plunges down the hill into turn five, and then this next little | :13:28. | :13:31.
section through the little kink at six, then seven and eight climbing | :13:32. | :13:35.
back up the hill once again. A fantastic viewing platform on the | :13:36. | :13:38.
grass bank on the outside, a beautiful day, air temperature 27 | :13:39. | :13:42.
degrees, track temperature fairly constant at around the 43 degrees | :13:43. | :13:47.
mark. An absolutely gorgeous day here just outside Barcelona. Tom, | :13:48. | :13:54.
you have got some more for us? The air temperature, something for the | :13:55. | :13:57.
teams to bear in mind in this Q2 session is that the wind has been | :13:58. | :14:00.
picking up steadily over the last three hours, but it is quite a | :14:01. | :14:06.
strong headwind now. Just finding the braking point into turn one is | :14:07. | :14:10.
going to be interesting. Yeah, the wind does affect handling a lot. A | :14:11. | :14:16.
headwind into turn one is desirable, because it increases the | :14:17. | :14:20.
airspeed over the wings for the same level of track speed, so you get the | :14:21. | :14:24.
sensation of having more grip and more downforce. A tailwind is | :14:25. | :14:28.
something altogether more difficult to deal with, so you can really | :14:29. | :14:35.
barrel some speed in to turn one, give you good position for two, and | :14:36. | :14:39.
it becomes a side wind in turn three, which can affect the car | :14:40. | :14:43.
quite difficult. Into four, the tailwind makes it difficult to | :14:44. | :14:48.
control the rear of the car. This is a good looking lap from Nico | :14:49. | :14:52.
Hulkenberg. He looks to be on a new set of the softer tyre, so this will | :14:53. | :14:56.
be a crucial lap for him. Even will be watching closely to see what lap | :14:57. | :15:01.
time he can achieve. Aid head of both the Red Bull drives in the | :15:02. | :15:08.
points. It seems amazing, Hulkenberg ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo as we | :15:09. | :15:12.
come into round five, using a lot of road, but just about OK. | :15:13. | :15:16.
Would have lost a bit of acceleration on to the back | :15:17. | :15:23.
straight. DRS will help neutralise some of that. He gets it tidy, a lot | :15:24. | :15:27.
of patience required. A long right-hander before coming into this | :15:28. | :15:32.
last little chicane. Perez is also on track, behind him. | :15:33. | :15:39.
Let us see how tidy Hulkenberg can be. He is patient, getting on the | :15:40. | :15:44.
power. Through the final turn, of course sets the pace in this Q2 | :15:45. | :15:49.
session. Let us see what the initial lap time is. 1: 28.8. That will be | :15:50. | :15:55.
round the target time. It is going to be tight for Force India to get | :15:56. | :15:58.
into the top ten. That is their first attempt. Perez behind, not as | :15:59. | :16:02.
quick on his current lap, so we will see whether he can improve when he | :16:03. | :16:07.
crosses the line, we will see what the lap time is like. Mercedes | :16:08. | :16:12.
beginning to make their presence felt. That is. | :16:13. | :16:14.
beginning to make their presence felt. Going on the a flying lap. As | :16:15. | :16:17.
we still wait for Perez to come round to complete. He is coming | :16:18. | :16:21.
through the last corner now, Sergio Perez as goes into turn one. | :16:22. | :16:27.
Hulkenberg will psychologically be boosted by that. He has gone a bit | :16:28. | :16:32.
quicker, he has been complaining about the rear of the car. They can | :16:33. | :16:40.
do tyre pressure, differential and recovery mode which may help | :16:41. | :16:43.
establish lies, what you have in terms of bar, springs you are locked | :16:44. | :16:48.
in in the parc ferme conditions. Three times in the top ten this | :16:49. | :16:53.
year, , he has been in the points on every occasion, might not have | :16:54. | :16:57.
dedelivered the headline he would have liked but he had a fifth place | :16:58. | :17:01.
this season. Just a bit off Felipe Massa, so he may be, may have been | :17:02. | :17:07.
studying the telemetry of it. He got wide through nine. He tried to get | :17:08. | :17:11.
on the power, had to lift out of it and ran o ran on to the artificial | :17:12. | :17:16.
grass. Lap time looking good. He set a good sector time there. Kimi | :17:17. | :17:20.
Raikkonen has gone fastest of anybody in the first sector of the | :17:21. | :17:24.
lap. Let us continue to watch in this | :17:25. | :17:30.
last part. Mow are the rear tyres holding up? The Williams tends to | :17:31. | :17:34.
eat its rare Thais more than some of the other teams. None of that | :17:35. | :17:38.
squirrelling of the rear as he goes out through 16, so it is holding 17. | :17:39. | :17:47.
The DRS is open. He has gone faster than Perez. What about mast -- | :17:48. | :17:53.
Massa, is he going faster than his team-mate? Not much in it. Raikkonen | :17:54. | :17:57.
is the one who is likely to go fastest in a second or so. Let us | :17:58. | :18:01.
see how this compares. Massa goes quicker, a tenth or so quicker than | :18:02. | :18:06.
Valtteri Bottas, the Williams very evenly matched. This is something we | :18:07. | :18:10.
are likely to see, two by two, the car performance is crucial here. | :18:11. | :18:17.
Raikkonen goes fastest, 1: 27.4. Well, that is not going to be | :18:18. | :18:21.
enough, I don't think. You would expect the Ferrari to have a bit | :18:22. | :18:26.
more pace than that. Hamilton son a lap And Rosberg, that | :18:27. | :18:30.
I are trading purple sectors which means they are fastest of all and | :18:31. | :18:34.
using his rally experience to good effect as he drifts the car through. | :18:35. | :18:38.
Fantastic car control. A lovely shot. Might not been the fastest way | :18:39. | :18:43.
but it looks spectacular. Rosberg on a good lap here but Hamilton is | :18:44. | :18:46.
behind him. Hamilton is just a couple of hundredth quicker in the | :18:47. | :18:50.
first sector than Rosberg, they do seem to be trading blows here, let | :18:51. | :18:56.
us see what lap time we can see for Nico Rosberg. He goes fastest 1: | :18:57. | :19:03.
26.0. Hamilton not as quick, he lost 11 than a tenth so it will be almost | :19:04. | :19:08.
the same. He has a bit of traffic ahead. Hopefully that won't affect | :19:09. | :19:13.
his line through this section. 14, 15, into 16. A hint of oversteering. | :19:14. | :19:21.
Nico was tidier there. Cost one hundredth of a second there. He is | :19:22. | :19:26.
two down on his team-mate. Rosberg takes the advantage, there is plenty | :19:27. | :19:33.
of time to go You can see Nico is more come -- comfortable to let the | :19:34. | :19:38.
Carol through that last section. Lewis, he is frustrated in the way | :19:39. | :19:43.
he has to work the wheel. He knows that will cost him some time. So | :19:44. | :19:47.
Alonso will be come round to complete a lap. That was the first | :19:48. | :19:54.
computer lap we have -- complete lap we have seen Lewis do. He aborted | :19:55. | :19:58.
his medium tyre run, so interesting that the first time he does it, he | :19:59. | :20:02.
is slower than Rosberg, who did do a complete lap this morning. Vettel, | :20:03. | :20:07.
important lap for Vettel. Raikkonen is a fraction quicker than Alonso, | :20:08. | :20:13.
Alonso gone fourth and Vettel goes faster than breath Ferrari, that is | :20:14. | :20:16.
the sort of gap evident from yesterday. A half a second gap | :20:17. | :20:20.
between Red Bull and Ferrari. Grosjean. He has split the Ferrari, | :20:21. | :20:25.
now that does show that Lotus are in better shape here. That is a great | :20:26. | :20:30.
lap from Grosjean. The gap between Vettel and the Mercedes as Ricciardo | :20:31. | :20:37.
slots in, a further four tenth, that reduces the gap between Mercedes and | :20:38. | :20:41.
Red Bull down to six tenth, which given they believe the deficit could | :20:42. | :20:46.
have cost them as much as eight tenth of a second they will feel | :20:47. | :20:50.
good with that. Button crosses the line but he is only 12th. He is the | :20:51. | :20:54.
in the drop zone. We are looking to get into the top ten. Perez, | :20:55. | :20:59.
Gutierrez and Kvyat are outside of it and Magnussen yet to set a lap, | :21:00. | :21:04.
so is Vergne. So those are the two we haven't seen a lap time from. | :21:05. | :21:10.
Kevin Magnussen and Jean-Eric Vergne for Toro Rosso. Eric Boullier | :21:11. | :21:16.
keeping a close eye on performance, that is not enough, and Jenson | :21:17. | :21:21.
Button a former pole and race win here in Spain but not when he was | :21:22. | :21:27.
driving for McLaren, that was in his his winning season with brawn, a | :21:28. | :21:32.
team that became Mercedes. The team name has changed but it is one some | :21:33. | :21:36.
of the key personnel have remained the same. | :21:37. | :21:46.
RADIO: Very strange thing We will have a look. Something strike over | :21:47. | :21:52.
braking. It sound as though they haven't got everything working | :21:53. | :21:55.
creditingly. Bear in mind it is more imprevious sieve he has done that | :21:56. | :22:00.
time. Number of changes, in the braking zones for Formula One, | :22:01. | :22:04.
electrical systems to control the brake balance, a much bigger | :22:05. | :22:09.
recoverable energy part of the engine. This doesn't look good. That | :22:10. | :22:14.
is Kevin looking like he is getting out. A technical issue for McLaren. | :22:15. | :22:20.
He without would have been out by now. He has not set a time. It looks | :22:21. | :22:24.
as though he won't have the opportunity. The body language says | :22:25. | :22:29.
it all. He is not going back out. Kevin Magnussen, I wonder if Vergne | :22:30. | :22:32.
is going to go out. We would expect him to do a lap. Where ever Vergne | :22:33. | :22:38.
he is gettings a tenth place penalty. Magnussen will be starting | :22:39. | :22:44.
15th on the grid. Allowing for any other penalties that come along, | :22:45. | :22:47.
that is not what he would have wished for. At Red Bull, let us | :22:48. | :22:52.
listen top Ricciardo. RADIO: We are not going to run | :22:53. | :22:56.
again, we are not running again. That is because they don't need to, | :22:57. | :22:59.
because Ricciardo is third, Vettel is fourth. They are comfortably in | :23:00. | :23:04.
the top ten, with quite a gap over themselves and Raikkonen in fifth | :23:05. | :23:07.
place, the Lotus of Grosjean, the other Ferrari of Alonso, who may not | :23:08. | :23:12.
be quite as safe and secure there. . Looking at the best sectors | :23:13. | :23:17.
between Ricciardo and Vettel, there is half a second between them and | :23:18. | :23:20.
they are nip and tuck in the first and second sectors, so we can safely | :23:21. | :23:26.
assume there is more performance to come from Vettel, but Ricciardo | :23:27. | :23:28.
looking very solid there in third place at moment. Remember how few | :23:29. | :23:33.
laps Vettel has done, he lost all of the Friday running, they had an | :23:34. | :23:38.
electrical problem which required the replacement of the wiring loom | :23:39. | :23:42.
and he only did four laps and that I were four installation laps on | :23:43. | :23:45.
Friday, had to sit out the rest of the day and watched the cars on | :23:46. | :23:50.
circuit for much of the rest of the day to see who he could learn. | :23:51. | :23:56.
Felipe Massa is out on track so he is eighth, is ninth. Both in the top | :23:57. | :24:01.
ten but will they stay there? We picked up radio comment from Jenson | :24:02. | :24:06.
Button. I like the use of termination, he said take a look at | :24:07. | :24:16.
differential. It sound like a bit of Ron speak. The elusive apex. | :24:17. | :24:20.
Let us see whether they can try and correct that and make it easier for | :24:21. | :24:24.
Button to get to where he needs to be. | :24:25. | :24:30.
Jumping out of the car is Vergne. That is interesting, so he is not | :24:31. | :24:34.
going to set a time that, surprised me there. What news have you got | :24:35. | :24:38.
Tom? An update on Kevin Magnussen for you. It is a power unit issue | :24:39. | :24:43.
for him, which has given him an early bath. The team are looking | :24:44. | :24:47.
into the exact cause of the problem, but that is what what that he have | :24:48. | :24:52.
told me. It covers a multitude of season, it could be electrical, | :24:53. | :24:56.
battery, it could be something to do with the turbo, there are so many | :24:57. | :25:01.
parts of testify power unit now, but Felipe Massa. It could just be the | :25:02. | :25:06.
starter battery. It could. Raikkonen keeping out of the way as former | :25:07. | :25:10.
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa continues on in the Willemia, | :25:11. | :25:14.
Hulkenberg has just improved by the way, he is eighth now on a 1: 27.6, | :25:15. | :25:21.
but what a tight group that is from Raikkonen, 1: 27.4. All the way | :25:22. | :25:30.
down, 1: 28.8. A slightly bigger gap to Gutierrez. I think Gutierrez is | :25:31. | :25:34.
the one that is likely to lose out. Might expect Kvyat to go a fraction | :25:35. | :25:37.
faster I think. Might expect Kvyat to go a fraction | :25:38. | :25:43.
Kevin Magnussen taking the walk down the pit lane. A requirement for all | :25:44. | :25:48.
the drivers to be weighed or during qualifying if they go out. That is, | :25:49. | :25:54.
it is embarrassing to walk down past the garages, helmet under your arm, | :25:55. | :25:57.
knowing you want to be out there playing racing driver, but you are | :25:58. | :26:05.
not going to get any of that. Massa improves to -- improves to fourth. | :26:06. | :26:12.
It means Williams have a car able to outqualify Ferrari. That will give | :26:13. | :26:21.
them that boost. Susie wolf who will be here late later. She has been out | :26:22. | :26:27.
on track watching in detail what the drivers are doing here to make sure | :26:28. | :26:31.
he is fully clued up to get out in the car this week. Now, Valtteri | :26:32. | :26:35.
Bottas is also on a lap. He has gone, he has done a personal best in | :26:36. | :26:41.
the first sector, trying to match that time that Felipe Massa has just | :26:42. | :26:45.
done, up into fourth place, needs to be up there, this keep Williams with | :26:46. | :26:49.
a chance of scoring points and maintain his record of scoring | :26:50. | :26:55.
points this year. Massa, a former pole winner and race winner here, I | :26:56. | :27:00.
am sure is getting a few little tips by studying his data this year. Yes | :27:01. | :27:08.
Massa has good speed. Always has had good single lap speed in the race, 2 | :27:09. | :27:13.
consistency wasn't as strong as Michael, when he was at Ferrari but | :27:14. | :27:18.
he is is a great benchmark, lovely guy and that does tell us that in | :27:19. | :27:23.
this interteam battle if can match him or beat him it confirms his | :27:24. | :27:28.
speed. That half second could prove to be crucial. It is going to be | :27:29. | :27:32.
very tight in that area. I think Massa will be safe but might have a | :27:33. | :27:36.
few nerve-wracking moments. Grosjean, cross the line goes sixth. | :27:37. | :27:43.
That pushes down to eighth. Perez is in the drop zone with Button. Two | :27:44. | :27:49.
are already out, Magnussen and Vergne. Button goes ninth. He is sup | :27:50. | :27:53.
there are to the moment. Alonso is in a dangerous place in tenth. He | :27:54. | :27:57.
has not improved on that lap. He can't improve, so really is it | :27:58. | :28:01.
Perez, I think the only one and Perez is not on a quick lap. So it | :28:02. | :28:06.
is not going to change, Alonso by the skin of his teeth, just scraping | :28:07. | :28:10.
through there, in tenth place, and Raikkonen a bit quicker in that | :28:11. | :28:13.
session this time, but Alonso has made it through in the top ten, and | :28:14. | :28:18.
we now know that Nico Hulkenberg is out, Perez is out and he has pulled | :28:19. | :28:25.
off, sorry he has, sorry outside his pit box, both Force Indias not quite | :28:26. | :28:30.
as strong as we have seen, they do have good race pace but not in the | :28:31. | :28:34.
top ten. Kvyat, faster than Gutierrez in the end but he is out | :28:35. | :28:38.
and the other two names on that list, the two that didn't set a time | :28:39. | :28:44.
at all, they are Kevin Magnussen and Jean-Eric Vergne. In theory they | :28:45. | :28:47.
would line up new the order of the time they set this morning, which | :28:48. | :28:51.
would give the advantage to Magnussen, and of course he will | :28:52. | :28:55.
have the advantage any way, because Vergne has that ten place penalty, | :28:56. | :28:59.
so Vergne will go from 16th to the very back. Not exactly 26 cars on | :29:00. | :29:03.
the grid but Vergne will go right to the back of the field, and he will | :29:04. | :29:10.
behind Maldonado, although will he? Maldonado didn't even set a time. In | :29:11. | :29:17.
actual fact, although you want to qualify as far up as you can, if you | :29:18. | :29:23.
want to be mid grid, at the back you can avoid any incident that happens | :29:24. | :29:29.
at turn one. We have seen concertina effect, not so much in one but as | :29:30. | :29:34.
they go into two. Well, Saubers both out as we have confirmed. Gutierrez | :29:35. | :29:39.
in 14th position. Not able to really challenge for the top ten, we have | :29:40. | :29:51.
our top ten line up now. Williams did separate the two Red Bulls, | :29:52. | :29:55.
Lotus in the top ten, Romain Grosjean, what a boost that will be. | :29:56. | :30:01.
We have also got Raikkonen, Bottas, Button to look forward to. | :30:02. | :30:06.
Well, interesting second qualifying session, Eddie - Alonso just making | :30:07. | :30:12.
the cut, that is unlike him. Great news for Grosjean, disappointing for | :30:13. | :30:16.
Nico Hulkenberg. I am not so sure, Suzi. I think Force India have a | :30:17. | :30:22.
great race pace. If ever you did not make the top ten, it is sensible to | :30:23. | :30:26.
realise that 11 is the best place, you can make all the changes you | :30:27. | :30:30.
want and have an extra set of tyres. I think they have been | :30:31. | :30:34.
extremely cunning. If they planned it, they plundered brilliantly! 11th | :30:35. | :30:40.
and 12th here with the tyre choice, this is the perfect place for them. | :30:41. | :30:43.
They would not have been much further up the grid. So want to look | :30:44. | :30:49.
out for tomorrow. I think so, very clever. Disappointing for Kevin | :30:50. | :30:54.
Magnussen, a power unit problem, absolutely infuriating. Yeah, it is | :30:55. | :31:00.
always better to come from behind and sort of move your performance | :31:01. | :31:05.
up, and when you start in a place like Australia, so strong, you | :31:06. | :31:09.
finish second, on the podium, and you think, this is all in front of | :31:10. | :31:14.
me, easy PC, go ahead and make sure you maximise on the results, then | :31:15. | :31:20.
heartbreak for him. He will have to do a lot of soul-searching, how am I | :31:21. | :31:25.
going to help the team? But the team has let him down, because the power | :31:26. | :31:29.
unit we were talking about, I am not sure what that means these days, but | :31:30. | :31:34.
for sure he was unable to show what he's capable of, and we know he is a | :31:35. | :31:39.
strong driver. Let's hope we will see more of the good stuff, we can | :31:40. | :31:45.
hear from now. A frustrating way to end your Saturday, what was the | :31:46. | :31:49.
problem? I don't know yet, I will have to go back and find out. It is | :31:50. | :31:55.
something to do with the power unit, I did not have full power. A | :31:56. | :31:59.
shame, because I think the team has made an improvement on the car for | :32:00. | :32:04.
this weekend, and it would have been nice to show the improvement. It did | :32:05. | :32:08.
not happen, so I will have to try and do something tomorrow. Could you | :32:09. | :32:16.
feel the problem in Q1? It was there in Q1 as well. Yeah, a shame. That | :32:17. | :32:21.
is how it is. Well, let's have a little bit of Max | :32:22. | :32:26.
Chilton, he did really well today, qualified in 18th, he will go from | :32:27. | :32:31.
17th with the Vergne moving back on the grid. The art qualified his | :32:32. | :32:38.
team-mate, a big deal for him. -- he out qualified. I must declare my | :32:39. | :32:44.
position, I am a big fan of Max, a lot of people have questioned | :32:45. | :32:48.
whether he should be in Formula One, but he has demonstrated that he | :32:49. | :32:54.
should be. A strong performance today, you must be pleased. Very | :32:55. | :32:59.
happy, it is not easy with the downforce we have got to get a clean | :33:00. | :33:05.
lap together, and I got two really clean laps, and I think it is | :33:06. | :33:08.
showing that our updates, I know it was a small update, but it is | :33:09. | :33:12.
working, and we have pulled away from Caterham. So a strong | :33:13. | :33:16.
qualifying from all of us, but I'm really happy with my lap. An | :33:17. | :33:20.
interesting story, he keeps his chin up, very positive, they are at the | :33:21. | :33:28.
back but they have their own battle going on, doing well this weekend. | :33:29. | :33:31.
He has come through the national system of British Racing Drivers' | :33:32. | :33:34.
Club and I think he is a great example to young drivers. A good | :33:35. | :33:42.
ambassador, time now for Q3. The final shoot out in the top ten, | :33:43. | :33:47.
pole position coming up. The Williams team hope to see both of | :33:48. | :33:49.
their cars moving up onto the grid, Williams team hope to see both of | :33:50. | :33:54.
Felipe Massa went well in that session, Bottas is in there as well. | :33:55. | :33:58.
We gather Jean-Eric Vergne decided not to run at all in that session to | :33:59. | :34:04.
save tyres and put himself in better shape, starting from the back of the | :34:05. | :34:10.
field. He could not have gained a lot by moving up a couple of places, | :34:11. | :34:15.
and he saves themselves a new set of tyres. Good tactics from Toro Rosso, | :34:16. | :34:20.
but the question up front, which of the two Mercedes, that has to be the | :34:21. | :34:24.
question, rather than Will they get beaten, because their margin is too | :34:25. | :34:29.
great - which of them is going to be on pole? It does look like the | :34:30. | :34:34.
momentum, in terms of balance today, is with Nico Rosberg, and a lot of | :34:35. | :34:39.
it is coming in the last sector, that is the difference will stop so | :34:40. | :34:45.
Nico will be sitting quite comfortable, he just needs to | :34:46. | :34:49.
replicate that. Lewis will be studying, can we change on this card | :34:50. | :34:53.
to give me the confidence to let it flow? It is going to be interesting, | :34:54. | :35:00.
Nico has the momentum at the moment. In terms of tyres, Rosberg and | :35:01. | :35:04.
Hamilton still have a couple of sets of the new medium tyres, so they | :35:05. | :35:09.
will get two runs in this final part of qualifying. Grosjean has already | :35:10. | :35:13.
used one extra set, he will be able to use a scrub sets to do his first | :35:14. | :35:18.
run, and then he will have an opportunity on a brand-new set. | :35:19. | :35:23.
Fernando Alonso has two sets available, so he has the edge in | :35:24. | :35:28.
terms of tyre available at the over team-mate Jennie Raikkonen, that | :35:29. | :35:32.
could be important. The middle sector of his last lap was not | :35:33. | :35:40.
strong, it was certainly not his fastest sector of qualifying so far, | :35:41. | :35:45.
but it looks like Raikkonen was more comfortable in that Ferrari. | :35:46. | :35:47.
Sebastian Vettel, is he going to be able to come good here this weekend? | :35:48. | :35:54.
Let's sea, the first of the action starting with Nico Rosberg coming | :35:55. | :35:59.
straight out onto the track, not waiting for the track to develop. | :36:00. | :36:04.
Hamilton has just been out of his pit garage, heading down the pit | :36:05. | :36:08.
lane now, so we will get the first comparison between these two. We | :36:09. | :36:12.
have only had one dry qualifying session this year, in Bahrain, and | :36:13. | :36:17.
that was Nico's pole position, the only time he has beaten Lewis | :36:18. | :36:21.
Hamilton. When you have an inter-team battle, it is one thing | :36:22. | :36:25.
going up against a team where you do not know their strategy, but for | :36:26. | :36:28.
Nico and Lewis, they will be sitting there going, what is he thinking of | :36:29. | :36:36.
doing? Is he going straightaway? Oh, he has gone, I want to go. Suddenly | :36:37. | :36:40.
you have information available on one of your competitors. Tomasz. | :36:41. | :36:47.
Fascinating, guys, I have just been peering into the Mercedes garage, | :36:48. | :36:54.
and Lewis was sat with his gloves wresting on his steering wheel, | :36:55. | :36:59.
looking at telemetry. There was no closing of the eyes, visualising the | :37:00. | :37:04.
lap, and I'm guessing it was Nico's telemetry. David, you have been in | :37:05. | :37:10.
this situation several times, you and Mika Hakkinen had three | :37:11. | :37:13.
successive 1-2 start on the grid, you have been in exactly the same | :37:14. | :37:18.
position. That is what I am saying, you know, knowing that your direct | :37:19. | :37:23.
competitor for pole position, the man who stands between you and | :37:24. | :37:26.
victory is your team-mate, you have so much more information on the guy | :37:27. | :37:30.
you are competing against than another driver in another team. That | :37:31. | :37:34.
is a benefit to you but also to him, and the psychological roller-coaster | :37:35. | :37:39.
that you go through when you deliver the lap and you think, that was good | :37:40. | :37:43.
enough, and then your team-mate goes quicker, which happened very often | :37:44. | :37:48.
in my case, you go, oh, right, where did he find that time? You have the | :37:49. | :37:54.
opportunity, looking at an overlay, to see the differences between your | :37:55. | :37:58.
performances, so it gives you a great insight during that qualifying | :37:59. | :38:01.
session. They will be asking things like, what is the other driver | :38:02. | :38:07.
doing? They will not be saying, what is Nico doing, what is Lewis doing? | :38:08. | :38:10.
They emotionally detached the fact that they have known each other | :38:11. | :38:13.
since they were kids and just referred to the other person has a | :38:14. | :38:17.
number. Here we are watching Rosberg, and we have got a problem | :38:18. | :38:22.
for Vettel. Sebastian Vettel, now... Is that a technical issue? | :38:23. | :38:29.
TEAM RADIO: I have no drive, sorry, no drive. Is weekend and his season | :38:30. | :38:36.
goes from bad to worse, the car has come to a complete stop. Red flag, | :38:37. | :38:41.
bad news for both of them, particularly for Rosberg, although | :38:42. | :38:45.
they both have a set of tyres to use. It will not have compromised | :38:46. | :38:48.
them as much as it might have done, but they have put a lot of energy | :38:49. | :38:52.
through those tyres, they have to back off. They are past their best. | :38:53. | :38:56.
Full Sebastian Vettel, it looks like he will end of last of the top ten, | :38:57. | :39:02.
unable to set a time, and it did not take long. The car went down the pit | :39:03. | :39:06.
lane, the first of the two Red Bulls, he started to pull over as he | :39:07. | :39:11.
was going down the pit lane. Very unusual. Whether it was | :39:12. | :39:17.
straightforward, wanting to let his team-mates go, you would not take to | :39:18. | :39:22.
the track. Once you are out on track, it can't be recovered. We | :39:23. | :39:27.
will find out in time, he will not be taking part in any more of this | :39:28. | :39:32.
session. Tom, did you hear any strange noises from the car? Was he | :39:33. | :39:35.
just moving out of the way of Ricciardo? He was moving out of the | :39:36. | :39:41.
way, but I heard the Reds dive. I thought the anti-stall had kicked | :39:42. | :39:51.
in. -- the revs die. I looked up when I heard the engine almost crank | :39:52. | :39:56.
out, and it was Vettel. Interesting, because he managed to get down to | :39:57. | :40:00.
the first couple of corners. Christian Horner joins us from the | :40:01. | :40:05.
pit wall, any information as to what has happened? He lost second gear as | :40:06. | :40:10.
he came out of the pits, we thought it was something electrical, but | :40:11. | :40:13.
unfortunately have to he exit it at the pit lane, he has lost all drive | :40:14. | :40:19.
into turn three. It looks like potentially something mechanical. So | :40:20. | :40:23.
strange, this, you have had such a tough weekend, so many dramas in | :40:24. | :40:28.
testing - you seemed to have sorted all those remarkably well going into | :40:29. | :40:32.
the first few races, but race five, all going wrong. Sometimes it goes | :40:33. | :40:37.
that way, doesn't it? Nothing has gone his way so far this weekend, he | :40:38. | :40:42.
was dialling himself back in nicely. But you know, it will give him | :40:43. | :40:46.
plenty to do tomorrow. Still in there with Daniel, he has done a | :40:47. | :40:53.
super job in Q2. Just quickly, before we get back into the action, | :40:54. | :40:56.
do you think Daniel can apply pressure to the Mercedes? Not unless | :40:57. | :41:04.
they make a mistake. We are about six tenths off. Let's see what | :41:05. | :41:11.
happens in Q3. Sebastian Vettel's car is carried away, up to Ricciardo | :41:12. | :41:15.
now. A good point, if they make a mistake, because the pressure is on | :41:16. | :41:19.
now, they have lost their first run, and now everybody will just | :41:20. | :41:23.
have one run. They have lost a bit of their advantage. As the lap was | :41:24. | :41:28.
unfolding, Rosberg was slightly quicker than Hamilton, and even | :41:29. | :41:32.
though they have not completed the lap because of the red flag, they | :41:33. | :41:37.
will be aware of that. Again, it will take a superhuman effort from | :41:38. | :41:40.
Hamilton to overcome Rosberg, I think, this afternoon. Interesting | :41:41. | :41:45.
looking at the speed trap figures as we are in the Ferrari garage at the | :41:46. | :41:48.
moment, looking at our screens, the speed trap that is - I would not | :41:49. | :41:52.
have expected the two Renault engined cars at the top of the speed | :41:53. | :41:56.
trap, the Toro Rossos of Kvyat and Vergne. A replay of Hamilton, that | :41:57. | :42:02.
was Vettel, he was right in front of Hamilton. I got held up by the Red | :42:03. | :42:12.
Bull there. Sorry, Lewis, I had all kind of lights flashing. I think the | :42:13. | :42:17.
stewards will look at that, but they will look at the evidence | :42:18. | :42:22.
presumably. In fact, Vettel has parked the car in the safest place, | :42:23. | :42:25.
on the right-hand side of the circuit. If somebody has an issue in | :42:26. | :42:31.
turn one, it could have been in a more dangerous place. Lewis's call | :42:32. | :42:35.
was absolutely correct, Sebastian has obviously reacted, not because | :42:36. | :42:39.
they are connected on the radio channel, because they are | :42:40. | :42:41.
super-sensitive to not getting in a way of a car. What that does mean, | :42:42. | :42:45.
what I said earlier, Nico looking quicker again in the opening part of | :42:46. | :42:51.
the lap, at least Lewis has that knowledge that his first sector was | :42:52. | :42:56.
not a clean one. Interesting, looking at our tyre data, it looks, | :42:57. | :43:01.
yes, they have both gone out on the tyres they have already done that | :43:02. | :43:04.
lap on that they were doing, they are still going to get two runs | :43:05. | :43:09.
here, one quick lap on those tyres that were already under load, and | :43:10. | :43:13.
then the new set at the end of the session. Jenson Button, of course, | :43:14. | :43:18.
in the top ten here, unlike team-mate Kevin Magnussen, to move | :43:19. | :43:23.
that car up the field. We know he will not be tense, because Sebastian | :43:24. | :43:27.
Vettel is going to be starting tenth, so now we are battling for | :43:28. | :43:32.
the top nine positions. Fernando Alonso on circuit as well, we | :43:33. | :43:37.
believe he has two said of tyres to use, so we could see something | :43:38. | :43:42.
impressive from Alonso. -- two sets. Kimi Raikkonen has a great | :43:43. | :43:46.
record at this track, a little quicker than him in the last | :43:47. | :43:50.
session, we want to see this kind of seesaw between Alonso and | :43:51. | :43:53.
Raikkonen, something we have not seen much of it so far this year. | :43:54. | :43:58.
Raikkonen kit out qualifying on one occasion, but generally Alonso has | :43:59. | :44:07.
had the edge. -- Raikkonen did outqualify him. We have seen | :44:08. | :44:10.
Raikkonen, when he is comfortable, he is one of the exceptional | :44:11. | :44:16.
drivers, and if he falls out of that zone, he does seem to lose a bit of | :44:17. | :44:21.
performance. That is what really sets people like Alonso apart - they | :44:22. | :44:25.
never seem to have bad performances, irrespective of how good or bad the | :44:26. | :44:29.
car is. They are consistent in what they deliver. Hamilton goes on to | :44:30. | :44:36.
the lap. Rosberg is ahead of him. I wanted to check, Rosberg is slightly | :44:37. | :44:41.
ahead of him. Only about a corner and a half further up the road. So | :44:42. | :44:46.
we will get the first slit times coming up. Rosberg has gone through, | :44:47. | :44:50.
not particularly quick. He had taken more out of the tyre, it is almost | :44:51. | :45:00.
exactly matched by Hamilton to 6 thousandths of a second. Let us see | :45:01. | :45:08.
how the middle sector unfolds. It is very much a lap of three sector, | :45:09. | :45:13.
different demands for the driver, and mentally, I would say that the | :45:14. | :45:17.
first sector gives you the biggest pressure, but a you know you have to | :45:18. | :45:21.
get turn three right, one of the fastest corners in the track. Into | :45:22. | :45:25.
turn ten where we join the car at this point, a lot of pressure on the | :45:26. | :45:31.
braking zones and Hamilton a big quicker, and -- a bit quick e | :45:32. | :45:35.
Rosberg, this is where he has been gaining the advantage, nice and | :45:36. | :45:39.
tidy, about the drive off this corner. A bit of oversteer. | :45:40. | :45:45.
So let us see what the lap time is. He sets initial benchmark 1: 26.5. | :45:46. | :45:51.
Not as quick as the previous Q2. Let us see Hamilton. He goes a bit | :45:52. | :45:55.
quicker. He has the edge, but remember, that was on the used tyre, | :45:56. | :45:59.
but different again and it was in the final sector. That was a tidier | :46:00. | :46:05.
final sector for Lewis Hamilton. Alonso is working the wheel hard. He | :46:06. | :46:08.
comes through and drives for the line. He goes third. Look at the | :46:09. | :46:13.
gap, it is a second between himself and Rosberg. 1.3 to Hamilton. That | :46:14. | :46:18.
is the measure of the gap Mercedes have over Ferrari. What about Red | :46:19. | :46:22.
Bull? We think it will insert itself between Mercedes and Ferrari. Can | :46:23. | :46:28.
Ricciardo deliver on that promise? Yes he can. A fair bit quicker than | :46:29. | :46:35.
the Ferrari annal only a bit off the Mercedes but remember Mercedes | :46:36. | :46:40.
weren't on a brand-new set of tyres. We will see Mercedes take that | :46:41. | :46:43.
target out of reach when they put the new tyres on. Valtteri Bottas | :46:44. | :46:49.
waiting patiently before he emerges from Williams. A nice little | :46:50. | :46:56.
interteam rivalry between Bottas and his team-mate. Kimi Raikkonen, who | :46:57. | :47:04.
won for Ferrari here, in 2008, won for McLaren in 2005. Let us see | :47:05. | :47:08.
whether he can challenge the time Alonso has set. | :47:09. | :47:13.
Former Ferrari driver Massa loving the Williams environment and the way | :47:14. | :47:17.
everything is coming together. He is working with Rob Smedley who he | :47:18. | :47:23.
worked with at Ferrari. Those two drivers Massa and Bottas are getting | :47:24. | :47:26.
on well and the team is beginning to gel. Grosjean is the question mark, | :47:27. | :47:31.
where is he going to put that Lotus. A new set of tyres, will they send | :47:32. | :47:36.
him straight out? Yes, looking for clean track position. They are doing | :47:37. | :47:45.
the same with Hamilton's car. To difference between the two cars. | :47:46. | :47:50.
They started that session with enough fuel to be able to do the pit | :47:51. | :47:57.
lane stop, so they burn another 1.6 or so kilos of fuel on the | :47:58. | :48:02.
completing that single time lap. Alonso with a second set of tyre, | :48:03. | :48:06.
that is his advantage over Raikkonen. He has to do it on one | :48:07. | :48:10.
set. He hasn't got that opportunity to go and do a quick lap and bolt | :48:11. | :48:15.
another set on and do a quicker lap. And that is Alonso's forte, | :48:16. | :48:20.
especially at this track. He grabs the car by the scruff of the neck. | :48:21. | :48:24.
Raikkonen, we will see how he responds to that, but wonderful last | :48:25. | :48:28.
couple of minutes of qualifying coming up. We have the battle for | :48:29. | :48:33.
pole, then the situation behind, it is Red Bull or Ferrari, which | :48:34. | :48:36.
Ferrari is going to merge on top. What about the William, don't | :48:37. | :48:41.
discount them. They could charge Ferrari, so maybe fifth, sixth place | :48:42. | :48:47.
for Williams, you can see there is anxiety, trepidation as they get | :48:48. | :48:51.
ready for the final flying lap of the Barcelona circuit. There we are | :48:52. | :48:56.
watching Kimi Raikkonen. A big amount of oversteer as he comes out. | :48:57. | :49:01.
This is what they enjoy, that single lap, maximum performance, everything | :49:02. | :49:06.
the engine has got. Low fuel, new tyres and you have one lap to either | :49:07. | :49:11.
be the hero you think you are or a zero if you drop the ball somewhere | :49:12. | :49:15.
round the lap. We are watching Kimi Raikkonen, he is on his last flying | :49:16. | :49:18.
lap. The one that counts here, he made a mistake out of the last | :49:19. | :49:22.
corner which might have cost him a fraction, going on to the straight, | :49:23. | :49:26.
although with these engines probably able to recover most of that, down | :49:27. | :49:29.
the length of that straight. Now it is about the corners, and this | :49:30. | :49:34.
twisty infield section, trying to carry as much speed as possible. Not | :49:35. | :49:39.
run too wide. That looked very elegant. Tidy. It is relative to | :49:40. | :49:47.
Mercedes but that puts him in Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull sector. You just | :49:48. | :49:50.
see the confidence growing from Raikkonen. Head and the through | :49:51. | :49:55.
nine. He looks happier with the car here than on several occasion. Again | :49:56. | :50:01.
that lock up, you couldn't see it but hear it. And he tends to lock | :50:02. | :50:06.
it. The camera was too tight on the cockpit for us to be able the see | :50:07. | :50:10.
it. Let us see, Hamilton has gone purple in the first sector. Two | :50:11. | :50:13.
tenths quicker than Rosberg. Hamilton is on a flyer. It looks as | :50:14. | :50:17.
though Rosberg might be in trouble, because that is a very impressive | :50:18. | :50:21.
first sector from Hamilton. So we watch Raikkonen come out of the last | :50:22. | :50:25.
turn. Where will this put Kimi Raikkonen? Alonso has another lap to | :50:26. | :50:31.
do. Raikkonen goes quicker than Alonso, but Alonso is about to | :50:32. | :50:34.
start, well, he is on a quick lap. But Rosberg, here we go, he sup on | :50:35. | :50:39.
the overall times of course, he will go fastest on this but Hamilton is | :50:40. | :50:43.
quicker again in the middle sector, it is heading the way of Hamilton | :50:44. | :50:46.
again, and I don't think that Rosberg is going to be able to | :50:47. | :50:50.
deliver enough in this final sector, to challenge Hamilton. Let us just | :50:51. | :50:56.
watch. Just hits the kerb a bit He realises the pressure is on, this | :50:57. | :51:01.
lap that Hamilton is on, unless he makes a mistake he has done an | :51:02. | :51:05.
amazing performance. Rosberg goes faster but where is Hamilton? Here | :51:06. | :51:09.
he comes out of the last corner. It is Hamilton who takes pole position | :51:10. | :51:17.
from his team-mate, by 0.168 of a second. His first ever pole position | :51:18. | :51:24.
on this Barcelona circuit. His fourth pole position and it is 100% | :51:25. | :51:29.
for Mercedes so far. Ricciardo, we are riding onboard with him. Bottas | :51:30. | :51:33.
has got quicker than both Ferraris, and Lotus is quicker than both | :51:34. | :51:37.
Ferrari, that is amazing. We wait to see, Alonso has crossed the line. | :51:38. | :51:47.
Let us see where the lap is like. Valtteri Bottas, a star performer. | :51:48. | :51:50.
Massa is about to cross the line and he can't respond to the pace that | :51:51. | :51:56.
Valtteri Bottas has demonstrated on this occasion, and like Bahrain that | :51:57. | :52:01.
was the other drive track qualifying we had, Valtteri Bottas has put it | :52:02. | :52:03.
on the second row. RADIO: Nice work Lewis, that is P1. | :52:04. | :52:11.
Star quality, to overcome the difficulties he has had all the way | :52:12. | :52:14.
through qualifying and take the pole in the end, in fairness you did say | :52:15. | :52:17.
that between sessions you thought this was going to be, you know, | :52:18. | :52:22.
don't write off Hamilton, but that is a real blow for Rosberg. He was | :52:23. | :52:28.
quicker at every point free practise every session until it counted. | :52:29. | :52:33.
Hamilton has that ability to just pull something out of the bag when | :52:34. | :52:36.
it counts. Hamilton ahead of Rosberg, it is a Mercedes one-two | :52:37. | :52:41.
like last year, but roles reversed. Hamilton has taken pole from his | :52:42. | :52:45.
team-mate. Ricciardo, a strong third for Red Bull, ahead of Valtteri | :52:46. | :52:50.
Bottas for Williams, and they will be delighted. Williams beating Lotus | :52:51. | :52:55.
and both Ferraris and Raikkonen outqualifying Alonso on this | :52:56. | :53:00.
occasion, so that evens things up a bit between Alonso and Raikkonen so | :53:01. | :53:06.
far this year, they had been 3-1. It is 3-2 to Alonso but Raikkonen | :53:07. | :53:14.
faster. Button ended up eighth fastest for McLaren. Massa ninth. He | :53:15. | :53:18.
will be disappointed. He was eight tenths slower tan his team-mate. | :53:19. | :53:22.
Massa had been quicker throughout all the session, but Lewis Hamilton | :53:23. | :53:27.
is the man who has done it again, pole position for Lewis Hamilton, | :53:28. | :53:31.
and what a tremendous run he is on. Fourth pole position of the season, | :53:32. | :53:35.
only beaten once, that was in Bahrain by his team-mate, and is now | :53:36. | :53:42.
his 35th career pole position, he is only ten behind Sebastian Vettel | :53:43. | :53:45.
which sounds like a big numbers if it carries on like this he couldn't | :53:46. | :53:50.
match Vettel this year. That was a stunning performance, he kept his | :53:51. | :53:54.
head, worked with the balance of the car, studied the data and delivers. | :53:55. | :54:00.
Very carefully putting everything back together. Now he can Saturday | :54:01. | :54:04.
to enjoy the moment. He is in such good form. So relaxed. Spending time | :54:05. | :54:08.
between the previous Grand Prix and this one in Los Angeles, had some | :54:09. | :54:14.
good time off and has come back refreshed, renewed and ready to take | :54:15. | :54:18.
the Championship lead from his tame may -- team-mate. At the moment | :54:19. | :54:23.
Rosberg is still the points leader. Getting weighed there and Lewis | :54:24. | :54:27.
checking the sector times. Thatty with that. Interesting, Nico not | :54:28. | :54:34.
looking back. He is reflecting on an opportunity missed. Fernando Alonso | :54:35. | :54:38.
disappointing to see him start down in seventh place on his home turf. | :54:39. | :54:47.
It would be a boost for Raikkonen to have a solid qualifying session, but | :54:48. | :54:55.
well, you can't write Alonso out. Even from Sennath he could be | :54:56. | :55:00.
leading the first corner. That is fourth position for Valtteri Bottas, | :55:01. | :55:03.
and as I mentioned he has been in the points every time he was third | :55:04. | :55:07.
on the grid in Bahrain, it is only his, another opportunity to be on | :55:08. | :55:12.
that second row in the dry, he had a great qualifying in the wet but only | :55:13. | :55:15.
the second time in the cry he has gone for a start on the second row, | :55:16. | :55:22.
and I do wonder whether Massa might not have made a mistake, they were | :55:23. | :55:28.
so clothe close and ended up quite a way off. Seven tenths alone. We will | :55:29. | :55:35.
find out in due course. There may be some footage of a mistake but for | :55:36. | :55:40.
Lewis Hamilton no mistakes after it looks like we might be in another | :55:41. | :55:44.
Bahrain scenario. Lewis Hamilton snatched it back in the Voightle | :55:45. | :55:52.
final run of Q3, and Ricciardo, another starring performance, | :55:53. | :55:54.
Vettel, we weren't able to see what he could do because of his technical | :55:55. | :56:00.
problem but Daniel keeps delivering He is in a happy place, the momentum | :56:01. | :56:04.
is within him in the team. We haven't seen a clean run for | :56:05. | :56:08.
Sebastian, but he is doing everything he would expect of a | :56:09. | :56:12.
young driver, he has a great benchmark as a team-mate. No | :56:13. | :56:17.
mistakes from Ricciardo. He is getting used to appearing in the | :56:18. | :56:21.
post qualifying press conference and the post qualifying picture, the | :56:22. | :56:26.
one-two-three the guys will be doing any moment now. No-one can get close | :56:27. | :56:32.
to Mercedes in terms of outright pace, absolutely stunning stuff from | :56:33. | :56:35.
Lewis Hamilton. He takes pole position here in bars back, it is | :56:36. | :56:39.
another Mercedes one-two, the second of the season and the silver arrows | :56:40. | :56:43.
remain unbeaten to the top spot in 2014. | :56:44. | :56:47.
Is Incredible record, incredible season for Mercedes and it was said | :56:48. | :56:52.
that it required a superhuman effort to take pole position from a | :56:53. | :56:55.
situation that they were in, after it had been red flagged and that is | :56:56. | :56:59.
what happened. Lewis Hamilton, Nigel Mansell is right, he is firing on | :57:00. | :57:04.
all cylinder, isn't he. We talked about Nigel Mansell being the kiss | :57:05. | :57:08.
of death, in this case, Nigel, well done you have spotted it. Spot on. | :57:09. | :57:13.
Look, Lewis is in a different world. He feels so happy, we talked about | :57:14. | :57:18.
the body language and everything about imhim, that swagger, style, | :57:19. | :57:22.
and that is inner confidence, to be able do that time and time again, | :57:23. | :57:26.
you can't do it unless the car is brilliant. The team is brilliant, | :57:27. | :57:30.
the engine is brilliant and you are brilliant. That was an amazing show. | :57:31. | :57:34.
What was interesting I thought when you talk about body language, Nico | :57:35. | :57:38.
Rosberg said I need to take the momentum back and he looked as if he | :57:39. | :57:42.
might be able to do that. He is always calm but he looked slightly | :57:43. | :57:46.
out of kilter in China, perhaps because of what happened in Bahrain, | :57:47. | :57:50.
he seemed settled but Lewis has managed to grab it again The | :57:51. | :57:54.
advantage may sway in the race, I think that in terms of controlling | :57:55. | :57:57.
the tyres, in terms of a management of the car, in terms of the | :57:58. | :58:03.
structure in terms of how mentally he approaches the thing, it might go | :58:04. | :58:08.
back a touch in Rosberg's favour, so don't rule out the result because | :58:09. | :58:12.
we... I wondered what you were saying. I think you might have a | :58:13. | :58:17.
very job on our hands where theration, because for sure Rosberg | :58:18. | :58:21.
is probably a more thinking driver, in terms of the outright speed, | :58:22. | :58:24.
there is no doubt, I don't think there is anyone in this paddock at | :58:25. | :58:29.
this moment that can come close to what Lewis is able to deliver on a | :58:30. | :58:32.
single lap. However, we know that the race and the points are all in | :58:33. | :58:36.
the race and Rosberg will be there. Of course, the qualifying session | :58:37. | :58:40.
was changed because of what happened to Sebastian Vettel. Let us look | :58:41. | :58:43.
that the. You probably saw him walk past us over our shoulder. Here he | :58:44. | :58:50.
is. Moved over to let Ricciardo out. He couldn't find second queer gear | :58:51. | :58:55.
and let us hear what he had to say about the situation. I imagine you | :58:56. | :58:59.
are more disappointed than anyone who is still driving out from. What | :59:00. | :59:02.
was the problem and when did you first know about it? Well, Q3 to be | :59:03. | :59:09.
honest. Left the garage, and lost drive in second gear, yeah. | :59:10. | :59:13.
Obviously was clear there was a problem, but I still had third gear | :59:14. | :59:19.
and above so I thought I could imagine the lap without second gear, | :59:20. | :59:25.
but by turn one I lost all the other gears, so I couldn't do much. I | :59:26. | :59:30.
manage the polite word for what you have gone through this weekend is | :59:31. | :59:33.
character building, what might have been out there, did you get a feel | :59:34. | :59:38.
of what was achievable? It was a tricky day, the track is sliply, | :59:39. | :59:42.
especially if the tyres don't last the whole lap. It is close, as you | :59:43. | :59:49.
can see, after Mercedes, so, I think I needed more laps, I was getting | :59:50. | :59:54.
more and more in the rit -- rhythm. I messed yesterday so I thought I | :59:55. | :59:59.
could be worth shooting for P3. That is what we had in the car, so,never | :00:00. | :00:09.
got that far. Yeah, so frustrating when it is not your fault. They have | :00:10. | :00:13.
got a lot of work to do tonight. Yes, but we shouldn't be beating him | :00:14. | :00:19.
up too badly. The hazard four very good years, four World Championships | :00:20. | :00:25.
to reflect on. -- he has had. But he also knows he has the ability, he | :00:26. | :00:29.
knows he can win championships, and that is up in the mind, which is so | :00:30. | :00:34.
important. He will be back. Still a man to be feared. Every moment. He | :00:35. | :00:39.
will unleash something when we are least expecting it, and we will be | :00:40. | :00:46.
saying, why did we ever doubt him? Somebody else who lots of McLaren | :00:47. | :00:50.
fans really want to get the car is sorted out and bring it up to how | :00:51. | :00:55.
good we know the power unit is, Jenson Button, eighth today. Not | :00:56. | :01:00.
good enough, is it, really? For the team, the engine, what they have | :01:01. | :01:03.
got, when they consider that everyone is trying to see what is | :01:04. | :01:09.
equal here, and the engines are equal. Jenson knows he can carry the | :01:10. | :01:13.
fight to Lewis, and he is saying to himself, what must I be doing? Lewis | :01:14. | :01:19.
is the guy, you know, we fought each other in a championship winning | :01:20. | :01:22.
team, but I am still here, he has gone, he is riding high and I am | :01:23. | :01:28.
struggling. Mentally, he must be beating himself up. It seems like he | :01:29. | :01:32.
can only operate the car in quite a small window, let's get his | :01:33. | :01:37.
thoughts. You didn't sound 100% happy on team radio, was eighth as | :01:38. | :01:42.
good as you could get? If you are 100% happy, you should be the | :01:43. | :01:46.
quickest out there, so you will always complain about balance, that | :01:47. | :01:52.
is how you make it go quicker. Yeah, P8, it is OK. All the way through | :01:53. | :01:56.
qualifying, such low grip for everyone, it was difficult to really | :01:57. | :02:02.
balance the car. But in the end, it wasn't too bad. So yeah, it is all | :02:03. | :02:07.
right, and we have saved a set of options. Tomorrow will come down to | :02:08. | :02:11.
a lot of strategy, is that a place you can gain places in the race? | :02:12. | :02:16.
Yeah, but we are still not sure what to do yet! It is tricky, especially | :02:17. | :02:20.
with the way the circuit is, and at the moment there is pretty good grip | :02:21. | :02:23.
out there, the monthly low degradation, but we might have to | :02:24. | :02:28.
change our strategy with the weather. -- presumably. It is | :02:29. | :02:39.
unlikely to reign in Spain, the son is shining on some drivers more than | :02:40. | :02:45.
others, but we can hear from the other drivers now. -- sun. | :02:46. | :02:48.
You saved the best until last, Lewis. It has been a tough day, and | :02:49. | :02:55.
Nico has been driving really well through P3 and all through | :02:56. | :02:58.
qualifying, and so I didn't know whether I would be able to get it, | :02:59. | :03:02.
but right at the end I had to just eat out absolutely everything and | :03:03. | :03:08.
more from the car. Coming here this weekend, we obviously did not | :03:09. | :03:12.
nowhere everybody was going to be. But to see the development that is | :03:13. | :03:15.
going on, the hard work that has gone into getting the car ready for | :03:16. | :03:21.
this week is just inspiring to me. A really big thank you to the team, to | :03:22. | :03:24.
have the kind of performance we have, I have never really known that | :03:25. | :03:30.
before. Still, very difficult out there, the track conditions are | :03:31. | :03:34.
pretty poor. But I am overwhelmed, so happy. Well done. Nico, coming to | :03:35. | :03:39.
you, Lewis was looking strong yesterday, but he were fastest in Q1 | :03:40. | :03:44.
and Q2, you found something overnight full stop given how it has | :03:45. | :03:49.
ended up, are you disappointed? Definitely very disappointed. I | :03:50. | :03:52.
don't particularly enjoy coming second! To Lewis! Both, there we go, | :03:53. | :03:58.
just answering the question, you know! Yeah, so I am disappointed, | :03:59. | :04:06.
yes, but in the end, it was a good lap from me, Lewis did a better | :04:07. | :04:11.
job, so from that point of view that is the way it is. Anyway, it is | :04:12. | :04:14.
still all to play for tomorrow. Second place is only a little bit | :04:15. | :04:20.
away from optimum, because all it takes is a good start tomorrow and | :04:21. | :04:23.
then I am in the lead again, you know, so that is the good thing | :04:24. | :04:27.
about it, and that is why it is all to play for. Thank you. Coming to | :04:28. | :04:32.
you, Daniel, another top three, a good day for you personally, | :04:33. | :04:37.
problems for Sebastian in Q3, a fairly big margin between Lewis and | :04:38. | :04:43.
yourself. Yeah, I think we, again, the best of the rest, but that is | :04:44. | :04:48.
not quite good enough. You know, we are still a second off, and I | :04:49. | :04:53.
thought my lap was not too bad. I was expecting a smaller gap than | :04:54. | :04:57.
that. But you know, obviously I think we have made some | :04:58. | :05:01.
improvements, but obviously, they being Mercedes have done as well, so | :05:02. | :05:04.
we would have liked to have closed that, but we have still got some | :05:05. | :05:08.
work edibles. On a positive note, yeah, we are a clear third today, we | :05:09. | :05:17.
had quite a good buffer to P4. For sure, we want to get closer to the | :05:18. | :05:23.
front two. Good attitude from Daniel Ricciardo, | :05:24. | :05:26.
David has raced down from the commentary box, not a bead of | :05:27. | :05:30.
sweat! It is the story of Mercedes, but Daniel Ricciardo, we have talked | :05:31. | :05:34.
about it being a superstar that has pitched up at Red Bull, and once | :05:35. | :05:39.
again he said he was frustrated that they are off the pace, but he should | :05:40. | :05:43.
be happier that he is the best of the rest. Unquestionably. The start | :05:44. | :05:48.
of his season, his career with Red Bull Racing, he is not new to Red | :05:49. | :05:54.
Bull, having been with Toro Rosso, and their junior programme before | :05:55. | :05:58.
that, but he's fulfilling the potential and the opportunity. | :05:59. | :06:00.
Sebastian Vettel was at Toro Rosso, he joined Red Bull for a period of | :06:01. | :06:05.
dominance. We are seeing this young guy just catching the wave, and it | :06:06. | :06:09.
will be interesting to see just how the season develops, and how he | :06:10. | :06:13.
continues to develop as a racing driver and where it takes him. And | :06:14. | :06:18.
shuffling out of the way, Fernando Alonso is trying to get past, | :06:19. | :06:21.
everyone goes into total panic in Spain! Valtteri Bottas, will have a | :06:22. | :06:26.
little look at the end of his lap, he has also been a superstar today, | :06:27. | :06:32.
a terrific lap. We know he has got good speed, Frank Williams himself | :06:33. | :06:37.
said he saw similarities between his speed and approach to a young Senna, | :06:38. | :06:44.
which is fairly high praise! It has been difficult for him, in the | :06:45. | :06:48.
Williams, in the last couple of years to step forward, but with | :06:49. | :06:52.
Felipe Massa he has a good team-mate, someone who will work | :06:53. | :06:57.
with him, a good benchmark, and the Mercedes power, a car that is | :06:58. | :07:00.
working reasonably well, and he has pulled a lap together, and that is | :07:01. | :07:06.
what he needs to continue to do. As Williams look at their development, | :07:07. | :07:08.
ultimately, whether they are the team he will stay with in the | :07:09. | :07:15.
future. Congratulations, a really strong performance, a big smile on | :07:16. | :07:18.
your face and quite rightly so. Yeah, it feels really nice, quite a | :07:19. | :07:24.
tough weekend for me until qualifying. We made some big set of | :07:25. | :07:29.
changes for the qualifying, and it really made a big difference, and I | :07:30. | :07:34.
got much more confidence in the car, and got there in the end. So | :07:35. | :07:41.
happy for people. How do you think it will transfer into the race? | :07:42. | :07:46.
Normally it is difficult to overtake, so I am looking | :07:47. | :07:50.
forward... It is going to be close, of course Mercedes is unbeatable, | :07:51. | :07:54.
Red Bull is very quick, but after that it should be a good race. | :07:55. | :07:59.
Interesting stuff, he qualified well, as did Romain Grosjean. We | :08:00. | :08:04.
can't go away without talking about him, fantastic, Lotus really | :08:05. | :08:09.
struggling but he is leading them. The need to, because the team needs | :08:10. | :08:13.
an injection of life and good fortune. -- he needs to. There were | :08:14. | :08:17.
times that we called into question his ability to drive and race well, | :08:18. | :08:22.
Grosjean, in the past, but in recent years and months he has developed | :08:23. | :08:25.
into a very strong driver and this was a strong performance from a car | :08:26. | :08:29.
that, in my opinion, should not be in this position. They were ahead of | :08:30. | :08:34.
the Ferraris. Before we talk about them, we can you from Fernando | :08:35. | :08:38.
Alonso. I know you like the circuit and love home advantage, but the | :08:39. | :08:45.
fans will need to give you an awful lot of energy to get that Ferrari | :08:46. | :08:47.
across the line tomorrow. Definitely, it will be a tough | :08:48. | :08:50.
race, no surprises about that. We have been fighting with low grip | :08:51. | :08:57.
overall, and it is the same for everybody, because we see the times | :08:58. | :09:00.
are slow for everyone. But we didn't manage to get some comfort in the | :09:01. | :09:07.
car, and tomorrow, starting seventh is not going to be easy, but that is | :09:08. | :09:12.
the position we have to deal with. We were not quicker than that, and | :09:13. | :09:19.
hopefully tomorrow week -- we can recover some pace. The rear end is | :09:20. | :09:25.
his the one where we have been making six set of changes and still | :09:26. | :09:32.
not in a position to have a solid rear. At the moment, that is the | :09:33. | :09:37.
main problem. Of course, it is all about the race tomorrow, and about | :09:38. | :09:42.
the Ayrton Senna interview, the piece that Eddie did, there is more | :09:43. | :09:47.
of that online if you want to look. Join us tomorrow at 1:15 on BBC One, | :09:48. | :09:53.
and we will have all of the action for you. Catch the Catalan raise | :09:54. | :09:58.
with us tomorrow. The sun was certainly shining on Lewis Hamilton | :09:59. | :10:01.
today, his fourth pole position of the year. It is about the Mercedes, | :10:02. | :10:05.
but the gloves are off and it is game on. Thank you for watching, | :10:06. | :10:07.
thanks, guys, see you tomorrow! Rosberg goes found this disc, but | :10:08. | :10:38.
Hamilton takes pole position from his team-mate! -- goes fastest. | :10:39. | :10:40. |
